Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcast.
- 0:21Speaker 1: In honor of Rodney Dangerfield, Dave Haxtell, back to school.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We'll talk about where that coach is going. Plus, in
- 0:26Speaker 1: a found 60 on Miller Night Football. Yeah, remember when
- 0:28Speaker 1: Dennis Miller was in the booth for Miller Night Football?
- 0:30Speaker 1: That was good times. Plus, Betsy's back and out of what? Yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 1: some injury news there for the Ottawa Senators. Not great
- 0:37Speaker 1: when it comes to Willie Eklund. NHL Unscripted, it's episode 102.
- 0:41Speaker 1: We will get to the news of the day, including
- 0:43Speaker 1: Igor Gaum, what that means to the New York Rangers.
- 0:45Speaker 1: But first, as I mentioned last week, Jillian Muller taking
- 0:48Speaker 1: over IG. Best one yet so far, JD. Her showing
- 0:51Speaker 1: up as Mia Wallace, but then you upstaged her with
- 0:53Speaker 1: your dance moves as John Travolta.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Fantastic.
- 0:57Speaker 1: As she said, it was almost like you'd prepared for
- 0:58Speaker 1: the moment. But you did not know she was going
- 1:00Speaker 1: to be Mia Wallace. You just slipped into character, Vincent Vega, bang.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I mean, iconic movie, iconic hips. You can say about me.
- 1:09Speaker 2: John Travolta is a friend of mine. I said it.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Wait a second.
- 1:12Speaker 1: You know John Travolta? No, there's no way.
- 1:14Speaker 3: No, I don't know.
- 1:15Speaker 1: That would have been a great story. What a reveal.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I would have been like, tell me something about him.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, we've got two weeks left in our contract.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That would have been incredible. John Travolta reveal.
- 1:24Speaker 3: He'll be our last guest.
- 1:26Speaker 2: He's actually coming on right now.
- 1:27Speaker 4: He's live.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It's all scripted.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's good stuff. You got it. It's all the... Just
- 1:35Speaker 2: a little bit of that. You're going to be lighting
- 1:36Speaker 2: your loafers on the toes. Going to be on the toes.
- 1:39Speaker 3: It was good moves.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Big time.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Speaking of putting on your dancing shoes, I was in D.C.
- 1:44Speaker 1: last night. Canadians and Capitals. And a lot of pressure
- 1:47Speaker 1: makes me. I knew that Tal was going to be watching.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And sure enough, he texted after the first few minutes.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I said, Lars and the Real Girl reference. I appreciate
- 1:53Speaker 1: you were paying attention. I give Tal the baton first.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Since he's the Habs fan, Habs lose last night. Power
- 1:58Speaker 1: play terrible. Dobrish couple of weak goals. Tal, go ahead.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Your Habs round up as they lose the Capitals.
- 2:04Speaker 5: I was just saying before we got on, I think
- 2:06Speaker 5: when Nikita Kucherov was saying the league is more skilled
- 2:09Speaker 5: but more dumb, he may have been specifically talking about
- 2:12Speaker 5: the Montreal Canadiens.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Oh, no. A ton of skill. Trouble in paradise.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Well, they have a goaltending controversy three weeks into the season,
- 2:21Speaker 5: so that's not encouraging. Dobish has been struggling. I mean,
- 2:23Speaker 5: I think the media in Montreal has been surprisingly patient.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I think they see the process. They've played well. They've
- 2:29Speaker 5: led in most of the games they've played. They just
- 2:32Speaker 5: can't finish it out. They're missing Demidov a lot. I
- 2:35Speaker 5: never thought I'd say that about a guy who hasn't
- 2:37Speaker 5: even played two full seasons. But you can see they're
- 2:40Speaker 5: missing his presence out there, and hopefully he'll be back
- 2:43Speaker 5: in a week or two.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And how good has Zach Bolduc been for this team?
- 2:47Speaker 6: Ooh.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Talk about a sneaky one. But, yeah, I mean, Tal, like,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think we– I think they put too much on
- 2:55Speaker 2: Dobesh after that playoff run. It was historic. And he's
- 2:59Speaker 2: still young, and he's still streaky, and I think he
- 3:02Speaker 2: was great in the playoffs, but it's hard. I think
- 3:05Speaker 2: he probably thought it'd be easy, and now there's a
- 3:07Speaker 2: little bit of struggle. So you can see he's an
- 3:09Speaker 2: emotional guy, too, and he seems to run on confidence.
- 3:12Speaker 2: But listen, they're exciting. Like an exciting team, man.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The games have been a lot of fun.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'll say that. Yeah, they're fun. They're fun and heart
- 3:23Speaker 2: attack Canadians.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And Nate, how about the Hudson? So the oldest Hudson,
- 3:26Speaker 1: not in the NHL, playing hockey. Then you've got Lane,
- 3:29Speaker 1: who's 22. Cole's 20. Cole's 28 months younger. And then
- 3:33Speaker 1: they have Lars, the youngest Hudson. So you can have
- 3:35Speaker 1: four Hudsons overall. And last night, lived up to the hype.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Lane scores. Cole had an assist. Both those guys, few
- 3:41Speaker 1: shots on goal. Exciting times. We've seen lots of brothers
- 3:44Speaker 1: in the NHL. Obviously, the Hughes brothers, the Sutters for years.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But what the Hudsons can do on a night like
- 3:48Speaker 1: last night, Nate, pretty cool to see.
- 3:50Speaker 3: It was awesome to watch. I mean, you saw the
- 3:52Speaker 3: parents in the stands. They were glued to it.
- 3:54Speaker 6: And then just on the broadcast, you guys, by the way,
- 3:56Speaker 6: great job, A.V., Appreciate that. You know, just on the broadcast,
- 4:00Speaker 6: how they were talking about it.
- 4:01Speaker 1: JD's guy, Nasher.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Come on, Nasher's awesome.
- 4:04Speaker 6: How competitive these two guys are. You know, like they
- 4:07Speaker 6: wanted genuinely to beat each other. And just, I got
- 4:11Speaker 6: to say about Lane, you know, the rumor was this
- 4:14Speaker 6: summer he's been working on his shot a lot, really
- 4:16Speaker 6: working on his shot. And it looks it because a
- 4:20Speaker 6: couple of the goals he scored this season, especially last night,
- 4:22Speaker 6: like I don't remember a lot of his goals last season,
- 4:25Speaker 6: him scoring. from that area and shooting from that spot.
- 4:29Speaker 6: So both these guys and then Cole, you know, like it's,
- 4:32Speaker 6: it's funny. They're, they're similar, but they're not in a
- 4:35Speaker 6: way like the way they play. The Cole just, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 6: lanes a little bit more, um, I guess agility jerky,
- 4:41Speaker 6: the way he skates back and forth and, and Cole's
- 4:43Speaker 6: a little more smooth skating. So both these guys are
- 4:46Speaker 6: huge parts of their team and you're, you're starting to
- 4:48Speaker 6: see Cole Hudson for the caps kind of take a,
- 4:51Speaker 6: take another level with, with all the other star power
- 4:54Speaker 6: they have there already.
- 4:56Speaker 2: They, Caps need a D-man bad, though. They're light on D.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I think that'd be the only question mark there.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I was super high on them, and then I've watched
- 5:08Speaker 2: them now, and I don't love it so far. Other
- 5:13Speaker 2: than that first line, which is just lights out, Tuck's
- 5:16Speaker 2: been great, and I think they did a good job
- 5:18Speaker 2: getting Kairou away from the Protis brothers because I think
- 5:22Speaker 2: he did not look like he liked playing with them whatsoever.
- 5:25Speaker 2: But on D, they're just missing something. They just need,
- 5:28Speaker 2: you know, be nice for them to go make a splash,
- 5:31Speaker 2: go get somebody. But I don't know who's out there
- 5:32Speaker 2: than Edvinson. And I guess Horkoff came out and said
- 5:35Speaker 2: he's not trading him. But in other note, too, I
- 5:39Speaker 2: watched yesterday. I watched one period, one intermission. It was
- 5:42Speaker 2: probably all I could stomach and get through. But you
- 5:48Speaker 2: were good. You did have a movie reference when you
- 5:52Speaker 2: buried Tyson Nash.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I like the suit, too.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you buried him on Ovi's goal, which was pretty funny.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I knew you could laugh at that.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You mentioned, I can't remember the movie goal, but I laughed.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I was like, there's Adnan. So you're dissecting it like
- 6:10Speaker 2: a something movie, a director of a movie.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Maybe like the Zapruder film or whatever it was.
- 6:15Speaker 2: The Zapruder film, yes. Yes, that's it. That was good.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Go ahead. I appreciate it, buddy.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Speaking of Ovechkin, I wanted to kick this to you, JD.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Last night, he did get one assist, 13 minutes, 14
- 6:24Speaker 1: seconds of ice time, before 39 of power play. And
- 6:27Speaker 1: at one point, I said, this could be the last
- 6:29Speaker 1: time I ever get to see Alexander Ovechkin play in
- 6:31Speaker 1: an NHL arena. So I went, you know, as you
- 6:32Speaker 1: guys saw where I was in the booth, I'm going
- 6:33Speaker 1: to go. I know it was only one shift, small
- 6:35Speaker 1: sample size, but I took like a 35-second video, and
- 6:38Speaker 1: he did nothing.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And I laughed at myself afterwards.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm like, this is going to be a challenge for Carberry.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You guys know this. Like, Alex is going to go,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I want to be in the power play. And Carberry
- 6:46Speaker 1: told us before the game, like, there was a five-on-three
- 6:48Speaker 1: the other night. Alex is like, I can go through
- 6:49Speaker 1: the whole time. I'm like, no, Alex, it's okay. Like,
- 6:51Speaker 1: if this team is legit, this is going to be
- 6:53Speaker 1: an issue at some point in the season. Mark my words.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Well, it's, you know, you want them on as long
- 6:58Speaker 2: as the power play is operating and clipping at a
- 7:01Speaker 2: top 10. You know, if it's not, then you have
- 7:03Speaker 2: to figure out something because you've got to get ready
- 7:05Speaker 2: for the future. I mean, Ryan Leonard hasn't looked great
- 7:08Speaker 2: this season whatsoever.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Big contract, $ 10.
- 7:10Speaker 3: 5 million.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Oh, I've been watching him, and I'm just like, well,
- 7:13Speaker 2: I think analytically he was the worst forward on both
- 7:17Speaker 2: teams last night, and I think in both games. There's
- 7:20Speaker 2: only two games, but he's young. He's going to get there,
- 7:23Speaker 2: but I think, you know, Ovi's probably looking at this
- 7:25Speaker 2: being like, give him a chance, but I'm here. But
- 7:29Speaker 2: that's Ovi. Ovi's the quintessential, like, he does nothing, and
- 7:33Speaker 2: he's going to have one and one. Like, you play
- 7:35Speaker 2: games against him, and you're like, you know, when, when he, what,
- 7:37Speaker 2: when he kind of slowed down and stopped hitting as
- 7:39Speaker 2: much and, you know, focused more on longevity, but like,
- 7:43Speaker 2: he's just so explosive when he gets that opportunity and
- 7:46Speaker 2: he just needs one shot. That's the difference between him
- 7:49Speaker 2: versus a volume shooter. And, and I think, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 2: we'll see how he deploys him Carberry, but yeah, I'm
- 7:56Speaker 2: interested how he moves. It looks like it's a feeling
- 7:59Speaker 2: out process for them right now. They're trying to find
- 8:00Speaker 2: what works and he's moving the lines around. And, and
- 8:04Speaker 2: I think it's, it's going to be a, 20-game process
- 8:07Speaker 2: for them.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But you're bang on. He used to be that guy. Oh,
- 8:10Speaker 1: we hit the ice and go and start hitting guys.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Now he doesn't do that. He does not hit guys.
- 8:13Speaker 1: There's none of that physical game. He's 6'3, 255. He's
- 8:16Speaker 1: just lumbering out there.
- 8:18Speaker 3: He's 259.
- 8:19Speaker 1: He's lumbering out there now. This is not the old
- 8:22Speaker 1: Alex Arametchkin. Big news for the Rangers in 14-8. Igor gone.
- 8:26Speaker 1: One of the feel-good stories of the early NHL season.
- 8:28Speaker 1: He's out for the rest of the year. 2022, best
- 8:31Speaker 1: and winner. A huge part of any hopes the Rangers had.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Now it falls in Dylan Garan, who entered this season
- 8:35Speaker 1: three NHL games under his belt. But in his two
- 8:38Speaker 1: starts so far, he's been good. 44 of 47 shots stopped.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And Lafreniere's been great. I mean, tied for second in
- 8:44Speaker 1: the NHL with seven goals. He's been waiting, it seems like,
- 8:45Speaker 1: for years for Lafreniere to prove he's a true number one.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm skeptical, Nate, but can the 6-2 Rangers defy the odds?
- 8:53Speaker 1: Can they still be a playoff team without Igor Shostakovich?
- 8:57Speaker 3: Let's get to 20 games.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Let's get to 20 games because the way that they're
- 9:01Speaker 6: playing right now.
- 9:02Speaker 1: He's soft.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I know. Let's get to 20 games. I'm going to
- 9:06Speaker 3: give him 20 games.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Puppy shit.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I'm going to give him 20 games.
- 9:08Speaker 1: He wants a yes or no answer.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Come on.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I'm going to say no. I'm going to say no.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I'm going to say no.
- 9:15Speaker 6: I'll put my pills right here.
- 9:17Speaker 3: But no.
- 9:18Speaker 6: I'd say no, but I would say it's impressive and
- 9:20Speaker 6: they're going to be in the mix all season because
- 9:22Speaker 6: of the way they're playing.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I mean, they.
- 9:24Speaker 6: They play a brand of hockey now that Mike Sullivan
- 9:27Speaker 6: being there in his second year.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I heard J.T.
- 9:30Speaker 6: Miller's comments the other night after the game, and he said,
- 9:33Speaker 6: we're kind of playing a boring game, but we're patient.
- 9:36Speaker 6: We're not going to break. The other team's going to
- 9:38Speaker 6: break before we do. I mean, they had a great
- 9:40Speaker 6: win against Tampa the other night as well. I look
- 9:43Speaker 6: at this team, and we've talked about it, J.D., with
- 9:47Speaker 6: their D. That second D pairing of Pettersson and Dursey,
- 9:51Speaker 6: has changed a lot. And then you'd like, we've, we've
- 9:53Speaker 6: talked about Albert Smith's and I think just everyone's slotted
- 9:57Speaker 6: in the right position there in their whole lineup. And
- 9:59Speaker 6: then having, having Mike Sullivan and they're playing his system
- 10:03Speaker 6: to a tee like it's they look a little bit
- 10:06Speaker 6: for me like the Pittsburgh Penguins did back in the
- 10:09Speaker 6: day when Mike Sullivan had he was on Pittsburgh and
- 10:12Speaker 6: how fast they play and direct same style of play
- 10:15Speaker 6: so No, I don't think they're going to be able
- 10:18Speaker 6: to get through it without him, without Igor, but I
- 10:21Speaker 6: think they're going.
- 10:21Speaker 3: To be right there. Right there, JD. It's for fucking
- 10:25Speaker 3: playing good hockey.
- 10:26Speaker 2: But, man, look at the Metropolitan, though. It is an
- 10:29Speaker 2: absolute mess in the Metro.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Mess.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Mess.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Like, it's a mess. Other than Carolina, and you can argue,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you know, we're going to say Washington's going to, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 2: they're going to kind of go on a run. Jersey
- 10:43Speaker 2: has not looked good.
- 10:44Speaker 5: No.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Jersey can't score. They can't. I'm shocked at... I mean,
- 10:49Speaker 2: they can't defend there. The goaltending, which was going to
- 10:52Speaker 2: be a major issue for them, is an issue because
- 10:55Speaker 2: they can't... Jake Allen can't be that starter for them
- 10:59Speaker 2: that they wanted. And now it's like, you know, they
- 11:03Speaker 2: did gut out one on the back of Jack Hughes,
- 11:07Speaker 2: but they haven't looked good consistently. The Islanders, what are
- 11:11Speaker 2: they going to... It's kind of like it's a race...
- 11:14Speaker 2: That three or four spot, we kind of talked about
- 11:17Speaker 2: it at the start of the season. We said that's
- 11:18Speaker 2: up for grabs. Like Columbus is, we're going to get
- 11:20Speaker 2: to Columbus, but what a tire fire that is right
- 11:23Speaker 2: now again. But Dylan Garan comes in absolutely, you know, opportunity,
- 11:31Speaker 2: preparation meets opportunity. And look the way he's played. He's
- 11:34Speaker 2: played fantastic. You know, Lafreniere is turning into a superstar.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I think we needed to give him a little bit
- 11:40Speaker 2: more time. He's come into his own. They moved him
- 11:43Speaker 2: down with, Miller and Cartier, and I thought that line
- 11:46Speaker 2: looked really good together. They really had some chemistry early.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Cartier making some nice little alley-oops. And then, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: there's just, it's a lineup that you're kind of like, eh,
- 11:59Speaker 2: when you look at it. But there's some pieces there
- 12:02Speaker 2: that are really integral to, like, having a good structured
- 12:06Speaker 2: four lines. Like, I keep going back to Will Cooley
- 12:08Speaker 2: on your third line. He's been great this season. Scored
- 12:12Speaker 2: another one the other night. on a tip in front,
- 12:15Speaker 2: but he's been great with Noah Labba. Him and Noah
- 12:17Speaker 2: Labba have been really good in, in, in Tolvan. And so,
- 12:20Speaker 2: you know, and I haven't even mentioned the decor, their
- 12:22Speaker 2: decor is solid. It's a solid six, but yeah, there it's,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I think the Shusterkin injury is going to be tough
- 12:27Speaker 2: for them to manage throughout the year, but I don't know. I, I,
- 12:31Speaker 2: this is kind of a turning into a feel good story.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Like the boring Rangers were like, everybody's kind of like
- 12:36Speaker 2: everybody was shitting on them and hating on them. And
- 12:39Speaker 2: I think now with the Shusterkin injury, everybody's going to
- 12:41Speaker 2: get behind him and be like, I hope these guys
- 12:42Speaker 2: could make it. Like, There's some good vibes coming out
- 12:45Speaker 2: of New York. It looks like they're having fun, and
- 12:48Speaker 2: the fan base is coming back quickly. I don't know, man.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They might capture something here, and I'm going to say
- 12:54Speaker 2: they do it.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I just didn't have men originally. That's why.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I'm going to fuck it. I ride the fence. I
- 13:03Speaker 2: hop the line every day. Don't worry about it. I'll
- 13:04Speaker 2: be right back with what they think if they.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Have a bad week.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Subject to change when it comes to JD's opinion.
- 13:09Speaker 2: We don't have a video. We're no video, so it
- 13:11Speaker 2: doesn't matter.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Well, we've got two weeks left in the podcast. Once
- 13:14Speaker 1: they dig.
- 13:15Speaker 2: This up in the archives, then I'm getting canceled. Once
- 13:22Speaker 2: we dig up this stuff.
- 13:23Speaker 1: By the way, our special guest is Kent Johnson, Columbus
- 13:25Speaker 1: Blue Jackets. He's off to a great start. We'll talk
- 13:27Speaker 1: about Columbus with him. and get his thoughts in the
- 13:29Speaker 1: NHL season so far. But Tal, you had a thought
- 13:31Speaker 1: on Lafreniere?
- 13:32Speaker 2: Just real quick.
- 13:33Speaker 5: I've been rooting for this guy to go off for
- 13:35Speaker 5: a while. Back in the day when I was a
- 13:38Speaker 5: sports writer, one of my favorite assignments, I went to
- 13:40Speaker 5: Rimouski for the New York Times to meet with Laffey,
- 13:45Speaker 5: as we called him, when he was eschewing to be
- 13:47Speaker 5: the top pick in the draft. You called him that.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I'm the only one.
- 13:49Speaker 5: But he had just such a great attitude, like great energy.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I watched him play.
- 13:55Speaker 5: He could do it all, and obviously it's been a
- 13:57Speaker 5: tough first few years in the league, but I'm rooting
- 14:00Speaker 5: for the guy to have the kind of season that
- 14:02Speaker 5: he's having so far, so I'm excited for him.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I kind of always laugh, like, we're rooting for a
- 14:07Speaker 2: first overall pick, like.
- 14:10Speaker 3: He's taking seven seasons.
- 14:11Speaker 2: I'm rooting for a seventh rounder. Yeah, seven seasons is crazy.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I'm rooting for a seventh rounder. Fuck this guy.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That's awful.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Come on.
- 14:19Speaker 1: About time is what I'm saying. I can't wait next week.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It's going to be about time. Brady Kachok and the
- 14:23Speaker 1: Florida Panthers are going to be in the nation's capital.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Amazon Prime for the Ottawa Senators. I cannot wait to
- 14:27Speaker 1: see this Ottawa crowd. They're going to be giving it
- 14:29Speaker 1: to Brady. But speaking of Ottawa, Jake Sanderson is already
- 14:32Speaker 1: out of injury. Sens got bad news. Willie Eklund out
- 14:34Speaker 1: for an extended period of time. He's out 10 to
- 14:36Speaker 1: 12 weeks. But the Senators, who J.D. said were going
- 14:39Speaker 1: to be a playoff team, they stood 5-1 for an
- 14:42Speaker 1: ugly 7-2 loss to the Blues on Tuesday night. But
- 14:45Speaker 1: Linus Olmark has been unbelievable. Perfect 5-0, just six goals allowed. J.D.,
- 14:50Speaker 1: the Sens are for real.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I mean, backed by a good defensive structure. I just
- 14:55Speaker 2: think they're very well coached, and I think they're solid,
- 14:58Speaker 2: and some of their young guys are very, very underrated.
- 15:03Speaker 2: You know, I think without Sanderson, you know, you had
- 15:06Speaker 2: Shabbat and I do think Tyler Clevin, Yakim Chuck comes in.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I think they're playing some really good hockey. So, and
- 15:12Speaker 2: when all Mark's on, I mean, he's a top five
- 15:14Speaker 2: goalie in the NHL. He's really, you know, it's a,
- 15:17Speaker 2: it's a, it's a Vezina caliber goalie. It really is. So,
- 15:21Speaker 2: you know, they, they get dropped, but it is what
- 15:24Speaker 2: it is. I think they're doing what they need to
- 15:26Speaker 2: do with, with what happened early on with the injuries. And,
- 15:30Speaker 2: I mean, you got a lot of good names there,
- 15:33Speaker 2: and I just think it's all wrapped up within a
- 15:37Speaker 2: structure that is very digestible for young players, and they
- 15:42Speaker 2: play a good brand of hockey.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Nate, you excited with this Ottawa team like JD is?
- 15:48Speaker 6: I didn't have them in the playoffs, but I'm excited
- 15:51Speaker 6: about them because of the way that they're playing, like
- 15:53Speaker 6: you said. Another guy that, after all the all the
- 15:57Speaker 6: situational things with Travis green, how they play defensively, their structure.
- 16:02Speaker 6: But I mean, Tim Stutzla since the beginning of the
- 16:05Speaker 6: season and how he's played, like he's turned into, he
- 16:08Speaker 6: already is a superstar, but he's finding that next level
- 16:10Speaker 6: where he's, he's doing other things where he's doing other
- 16:14Speaker 6: things uncomfortably that maybe, you know, he hasn't done in
- 16:18Speaker 6: the past, whether it's, you know, finish checks, big hits,
- 16:22Speaker 6: blocking shots, all those things that leaders do, he's starting
- 16:25Speaker 6: to do in his young age, where I think it's
- 16:28Speaker 6: maybe a little bit of Brady leaving, having that departure
- 16:32Speaker 6: has had him come to the forefront a little bit more,
- 16:35Speaker 6: I think, with Ottawa. So this team, they've always been
- 16:40Speaker 6: hard to play against, and like JD said, having that
- 16:42Speaker 6: goaltending with Linus Allmark, and if he's vezzing a level,
- 16:45Speaker 6: they're going to be tough to beat.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I worry about their depth at goaltending. You know,
- 16:52Speaker 2: Arison hasn't exactly, you know, didn't really shoot the lights out.
- 16:57Speaker 2: But to your point, Tim Stutzla has entered superstar mode. Nice.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And I think he's there, and we've been waiting for it,
- 17:04Speaker 2: kind of like a Lafreniere a little bit.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Like, we're waiting.
- 17:06Speaker 2: You know, he's very good, but, like, is it there?
- 17:09Speaker 2: Can he get to the next level? Oh, he's gotten
- 17:11Speaker 2: to the next level. I mean, leading the team in
- 17:13Speaker 2: goals and points. And when you really look at this lineup, though, like,
- 17:18Speaker 2: we forget that I think Brady dominated the news cycle
- 17:22Speaker 2: so much and who he is, the Chuck family and
- 17:26Speaker 2: their podcasts that like everybody forgot that there was a
- 17:29Speaker 2: good team behind him. And, you know, he didn't really
- 17:32Speaker 2: perform great in the playoffs ever. And there was other
- 17:35Speaker 2: guys that were poor performing better than him. And you
- 17:37Speaker 2: have the guys like Shane Pinto, Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzel, obviously,
- 17:43Speaker 2: you know, you got Dylan Cousins. There's a lot of
- 17:46Speaker 2: good offense on this team and you, even their backend
- 17:49Speaker 2: minus Sanderson and Shabbat, you know, you got Yakim Chuck,
- 17:52Speaker 2: who's going to really be a, a guy that can
- 17:55Speaker 2: run a power play for years to come. I'm, I'm
- 17:57Speaker 2: very bullish on Tyler Clevin. So there's so many names
- 18:01Speaker 2: that I think we forget about in Ottawa because they've
- 18:04Speaker 2: just been so, they've been so maligned with so many,
- 18:07Speaker 2: so much bad press and, and everything, you know, Canada,
- 18:11Speaker 2: you versus us and that we forget that this is
- 18:13Speaker 2: a good hockey team coached by Travis green, who, has
- 18:16Speaker 2: one of the better defensive structures in place. And last year,
- 18:20Speaker 2: all of their defensive metrics, even though Allmark, when he
- 18:24Speaker 2: wasn't there and wasn't good, all of their goals against
- 18:28Speaker 2: expected was best in the league. They had one of
- 18:31Speaker 2: the best defensive structures in the league. So you add
- 18:33Speaker 2: Allmark to that and good goaltending, they would have been
- 18:36Speaker 2: firmly in the playoffs. And I just think this is
- 18:40Speaker 2: a team that's going to surprise some people. That's why
- 18:42Speaker 2: I had him in the playoffs, correct, in our preview?
- 18:45Speaker 3: You did.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Nosha Demir is looking good right now.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I mean, I was batting 80%, something like that, so
- 18:51Speaker 2: far early in the season. The wild one kind of
- 18:54Speaker 2: eluded me a bit early.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But one that you did call was the Philadelphia Flyers,
- 18:57Speaker 1: who were a great last season.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Here we go, AV.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 19:03Speaker 2: If there's a fucking guy that called this Fugazi team,
- 19:06Speaker 2: it's this guy. Everybody just on a pedestal with the–
- 19:11Speaker 2: Philadelphia Flyers. Oh, my God. Rick Cockett.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't think we had him in the playoffs, A.V.
- 19:17Speaker 3: and I, this year. Correct.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Nate didn't have him in the playoffs, either, for the record.
- 19:20Speaker 2: No, you said they were winning the Metropolitan Division.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Nate would never say that. Nate would never say that.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Hey, Tal, can you mute him, too, please? Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Adam, you said he's winning it. Ladar's winning it.
- 19:36Speaker 1: No, they never said that. No, that's not true. They
- 19:39Speaker 1: said they'd be a bubble team.
- 19:41Speaker 3: A bubble team.
- 19:41Speaker 2: But listen. Yeah, they've been bad. I mean, another bad week.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Here's the thing. I don't know when this is going
- 19:48Speaker 2: to air, but their next game is the Detroit Red Wings.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Detroit, must-win game.
- 19:52Speaker 2: This is their chance.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I said the cracking game was a must-win. They lost
- 19:55Speaker 1: in a shootout. Now the Detroit game's a must-win. After this,
- 19:58Speaker 1: they're in trouble.
- 19:59Speaker 3: This is it.
- 20:01Speaker 2: They lose to the Red Wings. They have the Senators next,
- 20:05Speaker 2: who they already lost to. Then they have the Avalanche.
- 20:08Speaker 2: That's a pencil. That is a loss.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Then they got the Sabres. The Ducks, the Blue Jackets,
- 20:16Speaker 2: the Capitals. It could get ugly here.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It could get ugly. 0-6-2, the worst start in franchise history.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Dead last date and goals per game. Six worst in
- 20:27Speaker 1: goals allowed per game. Fans chanting, fire, talk it. But
- 20:30Speaker 1: I'll say this. Driving back from Washington, it was less
- 20:33Speaker 1: than 94-1 WIP. The great Jim Jackson voiced the Flyers.
- 20:35Speaker 1: He pointed out 20 teams have started with eight-game winless
- 20:38Speaker 1: streaks and 25% of them rallied to make the playoffs.
- 20:41Speaker 1: So I would not say they're sunk just yet. No,
- 20:43Speaker 1: they've got to turn it up quickly because J.D.
- 20:45Speaker 3: 's right.
- 20:45Speaker 1: That's going to get tougher. But of the 75% that
- 20:48Speaker 1: did not, because all those teams were tanking anyways. Philadelphia's
- 20:50Speaker 1: not intent on tanking. Now, that will change. Again, if
- 20:53Speaker 1: this continues, then Danny Bray will start the sell-off, and
- 20:55Speaker 1: we'll see what happens to the rest of this team.
- 20:57Speaker 1: But this is primarily the same team they had as
- 20:59Speaker 1: last year. The guys that are missing are Konecti, who's
- 21:01Speaker 1: obviously a vital player, Cam York and Ristolano, who are
- 21:04Speaker 1: top four, I should say, as far as defensemen are concerned.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Nobody expected this. Coots had a funny line. He goes,
- 21:09Speaker 1: every team has a stretch at some point. We're getting
- 21:12Speaker 1: ours out of the way early, but they better start
- 21:14Speaker 1: winning soon in a hurry.
- 21:16Speaker 6: Yeah, they better start winning because it's, I mean, Coots
- 21:19Speaker 6: could be gone too very soon as well.
- 21:21Speaker 2: What's the TK stuff going on? That just came out
- 21:24Speaker 2: today like that. There's going to be noise around this
- 21:26Speaker 2: team no matter what. There's going to be noise around
- 21:30Speaker 2: this team no matter what if they keep going like this.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I look at their games and I watch it and
- 21:34Speaker 2: you're right, they have the same, pretty much the same roster,
- 21:37Speaker 2: same goalies, I guess Walls and the new guy, but
- 21:41Speaker 2: it's just, they were hard to play against, like they
- 21:44Speaker 2: battled and I wonder, like, you know, I've been on
- 21:47Speaker 2: teams where you've done well the year before, you come
- 21:50Speaker 2: back and you're kind of like, okay, this is going
- 21:52Speaker 2: to happen, complacency, entitlement, and there's been that, but I just,
- 21:56Speaker 2: I wonder, I mean, you look at their lineup and
- 21:59Speaker 2: I look more and more and Danny B was trying
- 22:03Speaker 2: to get Leo Carlson for a reason this summer, and
- 22:05Speaker 2: you look at it now, and I don't know. If
- 22:08Speaker 2: it keeps going the way they're going, things are going
- 22:10Speaker 2: to be sold off.
- 22:11Speaker 3: It has to be, and I don't know. It's tough
- 22:15Speaker 3: in Philly right now. J.D., how about this?
- 22:17Speaker 1: Four points and a playoff spot. That's how bad the
- 22:19Speaker 1: Metro is. Four points and a playoff spot.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Oh, the Metro, that's the one thing you can hang
- 22:24Speaker 2: your hat on, but again, this team stumbled into the playoffs.
- 22:30Speaker 1: No, they were great after the Olympic break. You can't
- 22:34Speaker 1: deny the fact that the Flyers played. The Flyers last year, no,
- 22:37Speaker 1: they played great down the stretch. You cannot deny that.
- 22:39Speaker 3: They played good.
- 22:39Speaker 2: They played good hockey.
- 22:40Speaker 1: They were 18-7-1 down the stretch.
- 22:42Speaker 3: They were great.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and how many of those were in shootout?
- 22:46Speaker 1: The point is they just sat back and took on water.
- 22:50Speaker 1: It wasn't like the Kings were winning.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Vladar should have won the Vezina.
- 22:52Speaker 1: They were seventh in points per game last season.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I voted Vladar for the Vezina because he got that
- 22:58Speaker 2: team in because.
- 23:00Speaker 1: And again, they fooled everybody, but not J.D. They had
- 23:04Speaker 1: a great start to the year. They were terrible in January.
- 23:06Speaker 1: They were great down the stretch, and now they're a disaster.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They were winning in shootout, and okay, they got to
- 23:11Speaker 2: the playoffs, but Pittsburgh fell flat on their face. And
- 23:16Speaker 2: if there's another minute in that game seven, they were fucking,
- 23:22Speaker 2: or game six, sorry, Pittsburgh-Philly, they were dead in the
- 23:25Speaker 2: water because they were getting reverse swept. And then they
- 23:29Speaker 2: got dog walked. And it's happening again. They thought they
- 23:31Speaker 2: were too big for their britches. And they thought they
- 23:33Speaker 2: were good.
- 23:34Speaker 1: But I'll tell you this, Jimmy. Rick Tockett's not going anywhere.
- 23:37Speaker 1: This is year two of a five-year deal. He's got
- 23:39Speaker 1: $ 5 million a year. Rick Tockett's not going anywhere. Rightly
- 23:43Speaker 1: or wrongly.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I don't know. Move him to the assistant coach position.
- 23:49Speaker 1: We've got $ 5 million.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Move him to management.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Move him to the assistant coach position.
- 23:52Speaker 3: It's your choice, Tock. This season's not going well.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Best assistant in the NHL.
- 23:56Speaker 1: In fairness, you have always said that. You said, one, two, three,
- 23:59Speaker 1: he's a good guy and.
- 24:00Speaker 3: A good assistant coach. Those two things you've always stood by.
- 24:02Speaker 3: I had him as an assistant, too. You're right.
- 24:05Speaker 1: How was he as an assistant?
- 24:06Speaker 6: He was a great assistant coach. I had him on campus.
- 24:08Speaker 6: This was before his head coach era. Before his head
- 24:12Speaker 6: coach era. So I had him as both. I had
- 24:14Speaker 6: him as an assistant and as a head.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Yeah. You don't see a mention in the head.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Which one did you like better?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Just tell us that. It's... I don't know.
- 24:23Speaker 6: I mean, he was brand-new head coach, literally, interim brand-new
- 24:27Speaker 6: head coach. So it didn't change a whole lot.
- 24:29Speaker 3: And we weren't very good. So, yeah, I don't know.
- 24:32Speaker 2: He's great year one.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Listen, Vancouver year one, exactly. It was great, and then
- 24:37Speaker 1: wheels fell off a little bit. Meantime, Benzie's back. Big
- 24:40Speaker 1: night in Chicago.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Conor Bedard finally suiting up for the Blackhawks. Had an
- 24:44Speaker 1: assist and three shots. Chicago's 5-3 win over Pittsburgh. Blackhawks
- 24:47Speaker 1: for the first time showed a glimpse of what this
- 24:49Speaker 1: team could be. Roman Kancaroff scored twice, leads the Blackhawks
- 24:52Speaker 1: three goals. Anton Frondell, two assists, leads all NHL rookies
- 24:55Speaker 1: six points. Bo Byron played almost 25 minutes. Chicago's not
- 24:59Speaker 1: going to be a good team right now, J.D., but
- 25:01Speaker 1: could they turn the corner quicker than people realize?
- 25:04Speaker 2: Who's that? I blacked out for a second.
- 25:06Speaker 1: That's okay. Blackhawks, Bo Byron, Frondell.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 25:11Speaker 1: They're not going to make the playoffs, but they have
- 25:12Speaker 1: some problems.
- 25:14Speaker 2: The one thing we saw early in this season is
- 25:16Speaker 2: there a little bit of the Celebrini effect of when...
- 25:19Speaker 2: Bedard is not there. They struggle mightily. So he came back,
- 25:24Speaker 2: gave him a boost. I thought he was fantastic. I
- 25:26Speaker 2: think Frondell is going to be a stud. We said
- 25:27Speaker 2: it earlier in this season. He's going to be a stud.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I think he's really good. It's a good pickup. Yeah, they're,
- 25:35Speaker 2: you know, they're supposed to take a step forward and
- 25:38Speaker 2: I think they need to do what, I think they're
- 25:41Speaker 2: on the same path as like the Sharks just a
- 25:44Speaker 2: year behind, which shouldn't be the case. They should be
- 25:47Speaker 2: ahead of the Sharks in terms of the rebuild, but
- 25:50Speaker 2: they're there. We're like, they need to take a step forward.
- 25:52Speaker 2: They don't need to make the playoffs to, to improve,
- 25:54Speaker 2: but they need to take a step forward and, and
- 25:57Speaker 2: be competitive. They weren't to start the season. Benzie comes back.
- 26:00Speaker 2: They look really good, but I don't know. They're, they're
- 26:02Speaker 2: a little loose defensively. So, and I thought, I thought
- 26:04Speaker 2: Byron would do way better early on. I think it's still,
- 26:08Speaker 2: he's still getting comfortable and, and figuring it out, but
- 26:12Speaker 2: they have all the pieces, man. They got to have
- 26:14Speaker 2: number one and Spencer Knight. They got good offensive talent.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's just going to be putting it together. So, We'll see,
- 26:20Speaker 2: but yeah, they have to start going on a little
- 26:23Speaker 2: bit of a run here.
- 26:26Speaker 6: Yeah, they're going to be in the mix. I think
- 26:28Speaker 6: they're going to be a lot more competitive than people
- 26:30Speaker 6: think this year. I mean, that cancer off last night
- 26:31Speaker 6: looked great, too. He's going to benefit a lot with
- 26:35Speaker 6: Bedard back, and especially that power play. Having Bedard on
- 26:38Speaker 6: the one side and the offside and then Kane on
- 26:40Speaker 6: the other on a power play is going to be
- 26:42Speaker 6: pretty deadly. It's fun to watch with both those guys
- 26:45Speaker 6: out there. Another guy, too, on D for them, too, JD,
- 26:48Speaker 6: I like is that, and he's kind of, he's gotten
- 26:51Speaker 6: better over the last couple of years is that, uh,
- 26:53Speaker 6: that left you off. Like he's, he's really like this season,
- 26:56Speaker 6: I've noticed him a lot more. Uh, he's been, he's
- 26:59Speaker 6: been good for them and he made a real good
- 27:00Speaker 6: play to, uh, to cancer off the other night too.
- 27:02Speaker 3: So, uh, he's, he's, he looks pretty good.
- 27:06Speaker 6: So, and then like you said, having Spencer night, this
- 27:08Speaker 6: it's going to take time, like you said, but this
- 27:11Speaker 6: team is start. It seems like the Blackhawks are starting
- 27:14Speaker 6: to turn a little bit of a corner though. Like they,
- 27:15Speaker 6: in the past, It's always been like, all right, same
- 27:18Speaker 6: song and dance. Like they're going to be the same,
- 27:19Speaker 6: but it seems like now there's like a little bit
- 27:22Speaker 6: of light that we're going to see.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Like it's coming.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah. And let's check the JD schedule here for them
- 27:29Speaker 2: to make sure it's coming because it might've came already
- 27:32Speaker 2: prematurely because.
- 27:34Speaker 1: You have premature celebration.
- 27:36Speaker 2: You have the jets, the stars, the Canadians, the Panthers
- 27:41Speaker 2: next four games. So that's, there's your test because the
- 27:44Speaker 2: jets have been playing great hockey and The Stars look
- 27:47Speaker 2: like they're back to their juggernaut team, and Canadians are
- 27:52Speaker 2: the Canadians, so they're going to be exciting, and Brady's
- 27:54Speaker 2: figured it out in Florida, so we'll see. I mean,
- 27:57Speaker 2: they win these two games, two big divisional matchups against
- 28:01Speaker 2: Winnipeg and Dallas, and they're in the mix, so they're
- 28:04Speaker 2: right back. So it's really, I agree with you. I
- 28:08Speaker 2: think they're going to be exciting and dangerous. It's going
- 28:11Speaker 2: to be can they sustain that over the 84-game season.
- 28:14Speaker 1: That's the story when it comes to the Blackhawks. When
- 28:16Speaker 1: we come back, we go from the Blackhawks to the
- 28:17Speaker 1: Blue Jackets. Kent Johnson so far having a good start
- 28:20Speaker 1: with the Columbus Blue Jackets and a former teammate of J.D.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Stories from the Beijing Olympics and much more right after this.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Our next guest drafted fifth overall by the Columbus Blue
- 28:42Speaker 1: Jackets in the 2021 NHL draft. He has 56 goals,
- 28:46Speaker 1: 142 points in 279 tour games with Columbus, has world
- 28:50Speaker 1: junior gold, world championship silver, and a college conference championship
- 28:54Speaker 1: on his resume. And now even more important, he gets
- 28:56Speaker 1: to be a guest in NHL Inscripted with Jason Demers.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Ken Johnson, how are you, Ken? Good to see you, buddy.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm great. Thanks for having me on, guys. Nice
- 29:02Speaker 4: to see you, J.D.
- 29:04Speaker 1: So the Jackets had quite a summer with the Wierenski
- 29:06Speaker 1: and Marchenko news. How was it for you hearing all
- 29:09Speaker 1: this stuff? Were you trying to enjoy your summer? And
- 29:12Speaker 1: what's the vibe like in the room now that everything
- 29:13Speaker 1: has been settled, thankfully?
- 29:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, the vibe in the room is great. Obviously,
- 29:18Speaker 4: when you hear that stuff in the summer, it's a
- 29:19Speaker 4: little weird, a little different. But I don't know. I mean, obviously,
- 29:23Speaker 4: the one, you know, March is not even here anymore. But,
- 29:25Speaker 4: I mean, he was a great teammate when I was here.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Nothing bad about him. And then with Z, I mean,
- 29:30Speaker 4: you know, kind of just got to talk to him
- 29:32Speaker 4: in the summer and you know, hear his perspective and
- 29:35Speaker 4: kind of just, you know, a lot different than what
- 29:37Speaker 4: I heard in the media and stuff. So that was
- 29:39Speaker 4: just honestly kind of a nothing thing for the dressing room. Like,
- 29:42Speaker 4: you know, Z's a great teammate, really wants to be.
- 29:44Speaker 4: here uh we love him so yeah it's awesome.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Uh ken i you know you you talk about marching
- 29:51Speaker 2: and marchenko leaves and you bring in matthew nize and
- 29:54Speaker 2: he comes over you know, for you, you know, he's
- 29:57Speaker 2: done and he had an historic start with, with those,
- 30:00Speaker 2: that two goal game was incredible for you. Like what's
- 30:03Speaker 2: impressed you so far and what's your impression of him
- 30:06Speaker 2: in this kind of early going in the season?
- 30:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:10Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, the first thing you notice is like,
- 30:12Speaker 4: he's such a beast on pox, like one-on-one battles. Like,
- 30:14Speaker 4: I mean, one of the best I've ever seen, honestly,
- 30:16Speaker 4: like with the stick so strong on it and, you know,
- 30:19Speaker 4: really skilled with a stick too. And then so strong.
- 30:21Speaker 4: So I think that helps them and protecting pox really good. And,
- 30:25Speaker 4: obviously he's got the skill to finish plays you know
- 30:28Speaker 4: like make those passes or bury them so yeah he's
- 30:31Speaker 4: just an incredible player so we're lucky to have him.
- 30:34Speaker 6: I gotta ask because you know I played for Rick
- 30:36Speaker 6: Bonas and you know he's a guy that has been
- 30:40Speaker 6: around a long time in this league and you know
- 30:42Speaker 6: obviously a lot of experience but he's also a fiery
- 30:44Speaker 6: guy and he's shown that in his post game pressers
- 30:47Speaker 6: and how has it been since Rick Bonas has been
- 30:50Speaker 6: there you know last season and dating into this season
- 30:53Speaker 6: I guess with his expectation and how hard he is
- 30:56Speaker 6: on you guys, but I'm sure in a fair way
- 30:59Speaker 6: as well.
- 31:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been awesome. I mean, ever since he took over,
- 31:03Speaker 4: obviously we went on that run and, um, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 4: I think, yeah, like you said, his passion and, um,
- 31:08Speaker 4: just how hard he is on us, but like you said,
- 31:10Speaker 4: very fair and, uh, all the guys have a ton
- 31:12Speaker 4: of respect for him, love playing for him. So, uh, obviously,
- 31:15Speaker 4: you know, it's never, it's never good when you're losing, especially,
- 31:18Speaker 4: you know, bad loss. So, um, you know, no one's
- 31:20Speaker 4: going to be happy with that. And, Um, so yeah,
- 31:22Speaker 4: obviously we share that same, same passion and yeah, it's awesome.
- 31:26Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting when you look at what you've
- 31:28Speaker 1: been in your career, obviously you're still a young man camp,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but getting represent Canada 2022 Olympics in Beijing, being teammates
- 31:33Speaker 1: with our legendary Jason Demers. What do you recall about
- 31:36Speaker 1: JD as a teammate at that event?
- 31:39Speaker 4: Uh, yeah, I mean, he was just a beauty. I mean,
- 31:40Speaker 4: it was, uh, it was really fun like tournament for me.
- 31:43Speaker 4: I mean, obviously I was a younger guy and kind
- 31:45Speaker 4: of like first time playing with pros and, uh, I
- 31:48Speaker 4: don't know. I think I really enjoy just like hearing
- 31:49Speaker 4: the stories, like being a fly on the wall. I
- 31:51Speaker 4: think JD knows that first. I was pretty shy too. Wasn't,
- 31:54Speaker 4: wasn't talking much, but just loved being in the room,
- 31:56Speaker 4: hearing what these guys.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Had to say.
- 31:57Speaker 4: And I thought they were all so funny. So, uh, yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 4: it was, it was a great tournament.
- 32:01Speaker 2: You, uh, you roomed with, who'd you room with? It
- 32:04Speaker 2: was in your, your, oh, you were with, uh, you
- 32:07Speaker 2: were with McTavish and, uh, you were also with, you
- 32:11Speaker 2: were with Odell, right?
- 32:13Speaker 4: Yeah, Odell Power and Landon Ferraro. So, yeah, we had
- 32:17Speaker 4: a fun time in that room. So it was good.
- 32:18Speaker 2: And what were some of the things, like explain kind
- 32:22Speaker 2: of that experience because it was kind of interesting and
- 32:24Speaker 2: different from other Olympics. Like we were like four, you're
- 32:27Speaker 2: like four guys in this apartment building and like you're
- 32:30Speaker 2: all in this, like you're in this flat. So it's like,
- 32:32Speaker 2: it's literally like a fraternity house. And you mean you
- 32:35Speaker 2: guys had the messiest room, I guess, out of anybody,
- 32:37Speaker 2: but talk about just the absolute, The absolute headache you
- 32:41Speaker 2: put Odell through because he would come into the room
- 32:44Speaker 2: and be like, these guys are just running me ragged.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Well, that's funny you say that because, yeah, when we
- 32:49Speaker 4: first got the roommates, like, me and McTavish and Owen, like,
- 32:52Speaker 4: we were all really close before that. Like, and we
- 32:55Speaker 4: were like, oh, man, like, I bet these guys are
- 32:57Speaker 4: pissed they're with the young guys, like, kind of thing. So,
- 33:00Speaker 4: but for some reason, all the rooms were four beds,
- 33:02Speaker 4: but we had five people. So, I was sleeping on
- 33:04Speaker 4: a mattress on the floor and in the middle of
- 33:07Speaker 4: the living room. So, that was tough.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Journey Olympics, dude.
- 33:10Speaker 4: But yeah, so, and I don't know, I mean, like
- 33:13Speaker 4: they love just making my room so messy, like McTavish
- 33:16Speaker 4: just leaving stuff like on my bed just to mess
- 33:18Speaker 4: with me. Like, so yeah, our room was terribly messy. And, uh,
- 33:21Speaker 4: but I don't know. I mean, yeah, we were like,
- 33:24Speaker 4: we thought that they were going to hate it, but
- 33:25Speaker 4: I think all the five of us, we got pretty close.
- 33:27Speaker 4: So I'm sure they were complaining about us and being
- 33:29Speaker 4: messy or whatnot. But, uh, yeah, we had a lot
- 33:32Speaker 4: of fun. It's like we were playing cards every night,
- 33:33Speaker 4: the five of us. And it was tough for me
- 33:35Speaker 4: because if I lost early and wanted to go to sleep,
- 33:37Speaker 4: like I just couldn't, uh, Cause like I said, the
- 33:40Speaker 4: card table was right in my living room and my room. So,
- 33:43Speaker 4: but yeah, it was so much fun. Those guys are,
- 33:45Speaker 4: I mean, still, still keep in touch with them. We
- 33:47Speaker 4: got a group chat, the five of us that every
- 33:48Speaker 4: now and then we'll, we'll send some texts in. So yeah,
- 33:51Speaker 4: that was fun.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Who was your roommate, JD? Who were you?
- 33:56Speaker 2: I had Devin Levi, Jack McBain, and I had Morgan Ellis.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And we had, we had seven Levi's. He would just
- 34:06Speaker 2: be sitting in the living room. We had, We had
- 34:09Speaker 2: like the nicest room. We brought in all, we brought
- 34:11Speaker 2: in like arcade games and stuff. Like it was, it
- 34:13Speaker 2: was pretty dialed in, but we, uh, Devin Levi would
- 34:17Speaker 2: just be walking around doing that sensorina thing. That, that goalie.
- 34:22Speaker 2: And then by halfway through the tournament, Morgan Ellis stole
- 34:25Speaker 2: it and started doing like zombie games on it. So
- 34:27Speaker 2: he's playing like zombie shooter games on. So he's in
- 34:30Speaker 2: the middle of the living room, like bouncing around. But
- 34:33Speaker 2: to your point, it was, it was such a cool,
- 34:35Speaker 2: interesting experience, but, Going back to Columbus for you, Kent,
- 34:41Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you, talk about veterans and heavyweights.
- 34:45Speaker 2: We're talking about Matthew Olivier. There's so much more to
- 34:48Speaker 2: his game, I feel like, than meets the eye. He's
- 34:51Speaker 2: got a lot of skill, great hands. But for you,
- 34:54Speaker 2: how intimidating was it early on with him? And what's
- 34:57Speaker 2: the scariest thing you've seen him do on the ice?
- 34:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean. Well, it's, it's like as a teammate,
- 35:04Speaker 4: I feel like you're not like as intimidated cause he's
- 35:06Speaker 4: just like such a beauty, like such a great guy
- 35:08Speaker 4: right away. But, uh, but I mean, yeah, if you're
- 35:10Speaker 4: like going against him in like a camp drill, like one-on-one,
- 35:13Speaker 4: like in the corner, like I remember one time I
- 35:15Speaker 4: kept going against him every wrap and I was like,
- 35:17Speaker 4: this just sucks. You know, like he's just so strong,
- 35:20Speaker 4: so big. And like, like you said, can protect the
- 35:22Speaker 4: puck super well. So, um, yeah, that stuff's tough. Like
- 35:25Speaker 4: you might not want to be lined up against him
- 35:27Speaker 4: in those drills, but, um, But, no, I mean, he's awesome.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Like you said, so much more to his game than
- 35:32Speaker 4: just the toughness. But, obviously, I mean, I think he's
- 35:34Speaker 4: the toughest guy in the league. So, it's great.
- 35:37Speaker 1: It's amazing. We're just kind of going around, you know,
- 35:39Speaker 1: your entire career. You had some really impressive teammates at
- 35:42Speaker 1: the University of Michigan. Matty Beneers, Luke Hughes, Cam York,
- 35:45Speaker 1: Owen Power. You even had seven first-rounders on that team
- 35:48Speaker 1: your last year in Ann Arbor. What personality stuck out
- 35:51Speaker 1: to you most.
- 35:51Speaker 2: In that group, Ken?
- 35:55Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I think Brandon Burson. He's a really
- 35:57Speaker 4: funny guy, so. Yeah, he was always keeping it light.
- 36:00Speaker 4: He liked to pull a lot of pranks on the guys.
- 36:02Speaker 4: I think a lot of them were on me, too.
- 36:04Speaker 4: He knew I was pretty, back then, particular. Before practice
- 36:08Speaker 4: and stuff, he'd be hiding my sticks. I couldn't find
- 36:11Speaker 4: them and stuff like that. That was one that was
- 36:13Speaker 4: a repeat offender that was pretty funny to all the guys,
- 36:16Speaker 4: but not so funny to me. I'd get so rattled.
- 36:19Speaker 4: You superstitious? No, no, not really. But just like.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Routine, routine.
- 36:24Speaker 4: No, not at all actually. But yeah, like routine, like
- 36:27Speaker 4: I'd want to like get on the ice a little early,
- 36:29Speaker 4: like stick handle. Like I'd be chasing around my sticks
- 36:31Speaker 4: for five or 10 minutes. Like he'd be putting them
- 36:33Speaker 4: in the sauna or anywhere. So that was pretty funny.
- 36:36Speaker 4: But no, I mean, he, yeah, he's a great guy.
- 36:40Speaker 4: I got to see him a bit this summer. So
- 36:41Speaker 4: that was nice. And yeah, he's hilarious.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Do you get him back at all?
- 36:45Speaker 4: Yeah, me and Owen, actually, this would be a good
- 36:47Speaker 4: time to share that. We got him back like, the
- 36:49Speaker 4: because the thing about him is like you do a
- 36:51Speaker 4: prank on him like you're starting a war like you
- 36:53Speaker 4: almost don't want.
- 36:54Speaker 2: To those are those guys are tough you gotta be
- 36:57Speaker 2: ready yeah he'll.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Just go like three or four times harder so um
- 37:01Speaker 4: you know when like the day we signed and we're
- 37:02Speaker 4: like leaving for um you know buffalo and columbus like
- 37:06Speaker 4: we uh we got him back pretty good egged his
- 37:08Speaker 4: car and so i mean yeah so he i think
- 37:13Speaker 4: he thought it was like uh some frat guys too
- 37:15Speaker 4: uh So I think this is probably the first time.
- 37:19Speaker 2: He doesn't know.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Still doesn't know.
- 37:21Speaker 4: I think, yeah, it might be aired out now. But, yeah,
- 37:25Speaker 4: so sorry, Brandon, if you see that. But I still
- 37:27Speaker 4: think it wasn't fair. I still think he got me
- 37:30Speaker 4: an O and more in the two years. But, yeah,
- 37:32Speaker 4: we had to get him back good there.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I mean, that is the headline of this week's episode.
- 37:36Speaker 2: You just threw it, or did you just dump a
- 37:39Speaker 2: bunch of eggs on there?
- 37:40Speaker 4: No, I just threw them.
- 37:43Speaker 2: That must have felt good.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Just, just absolutely. It was hilarious the next day. Cause yeah,
- 37:48Speaker 4: I mean, I think he, he really thought it was
- 37:50Speaker 4: these frat guys, which is fair. And, uh, but yeah,
- 37:54Speaker 4: it was a moment.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Wait, what did he, like when he came in the
- 37:57Speaker 2: next day, like, what did he say to the room?
- 37:58Speaker 2: Was he like, guys, like somebody, I don't remember.
- 38:02Speaker 4: Like we were, we were gone. Like we literally left.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Oh, you were gone.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Like you, Oh, in the middle of.
- 38:06Speaker 4: The night, he left town. Yeah, we were headed out.
- 38:10Speaker 4: We said our goodbyes, like, we love you, Brit, and
- 38:12Speaker 4: all that stuff. I mean, obviously, we met, did all
- 38:14Speaker 4: that stuff, but then in the back of our mind,
- 38:15Speaker 4: we're like, yeah, we got him good. We're good now,
- 38:18Speaker 4: all square.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Oh, that's so greasy. That's so good. I love that.
- 38:22Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 38:24Speaker 6: Kent, we always like to hear Johnny Goudreau's stories, and
- 38:29Speaker 6: you played with him in your first full season. Are
- 38:32Speaker 6: there any good Johnny hockey stories you have that come
- 38:36Speaker 6: to your head right away in your time playing with him?
- 38:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, a lot of good ones. Like, the
- 38:42Speaker 4: boys will still talk about him. And, yeah, obviously Legend,
- 38:45Speaker 4: so much fun to play with. But, I don't know,
- 38:47Speaker 4: for me, I thought it was... I don't know, just
- 38:50Speaker 4: playing Seward was, like, a fun thing. He was so good. Like,
- 38:53Speaker 4: I don't know, just really good touch, great athlete. And
- 38:56Speaker 4: I was terrible, especially... I mean, I still am not good.
- 38:58Speaker 4: But he would just, like, pick on me so much
- 39:00Speaker 4: because he knew I thought it was hilarious. Like, he's
- 39:02Speaker 4: just throwing me these balls, like, that, like, I'm not
- 39:05Speaker 4: sure how he can, like, put them in the worst
- 39:06Speaker 4: spot for me every time. And, like, I just... can't
- 39:09Speaker 4: do anything about them so he'd just be dying laughing
- 39:11Speaker 4: like every time he he gives me these balls and
- 39:13Speaker 4: like I just could not return them so yeah he
- 39:16Speaker 4: is I mean he was just a fun guy like
- 39:18Speaker 4: really competitive like even scoring comps during practice stuff like
- 39:21Speaker 4: that and cards like card table too he just loved
- 39:24Speaker 4: it loved competing loved winning he was really smart like
- 39:26Speaker 4: oh seemed to be winning a lot in cards too
- 39:29Speaker 4: He was a super fun teammate.
- 39:32Speaker 1: You've been friends, Kent, with Conor Bedard since you were kids.
- 39:35Speaker 1: What's something about Conor we might not know about?
- 39:40Speaker 4: I'm not sure. I feel like I feel like you
- 39:44Speaker 4: probably know everything. I mean, the guys are the media
- 39:45Speaker 4: so much, like it's all over my phone. He's done
- 39:49Speaker 4: probably more interviews than anyone. So, I mean, you probably
- 39:52Speaker 4: know most of it, but yeah, I mean, he's a,
- 39:53Speaker 4: he's just a great dude. I mean, I think, uh,
- 39:55Speaker 4: you're seeing his personality come out more to like, uh,
- 39:58Speaker 4: getting more comfortable with that stuff. But, um, I mean, yeah,
- 40:01Speaker 4: all the guys love him. He's a really funny guy. Like, um,
- 40:04Speaker 4: I don't know. He, he loves the fantasy football. So that's,
- 40:07Speaker 4: that's something that, uh, I don't know if it's, it's
- 40:08Speaker 4: out there yet, but he's always, uh, always talking about
- 40:11Speaker 4: that just super competitive again kind of anything so loves
- 40:14Speaker 4: loves all sports I think he follows the NBA and
- 40:16Speaker 4: stuff like that too so um.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah Ken I wanted to ask you about you know
- 40:21Speaker 2: back when I you know started in Nate's time you
- 40:25Speaker 2: know you were really kind of it was kind of
- 40:27Speaker 2: frowned upon to be in the media and and you
- 40:29Speaker 2: know be on commercials and stuff like that now you're
- 40:31Speaker 2: seeing more of your generation coming in which I think
- 40:34Speaker 2: is a great thing of growing the game and and
- 40:36Speaker 2: you want to be in commercials and you want to
- 40:38Speaker 2: build your own personal brand like is there any kind of,
- 40:41Speaker 2: you know, when you see Conor Bedard on these commercials,
- 40:44Speaker 2: is there any text messages or anything like that that
- 40:47Speaker 2: go between you guys of like cringe or, or, or
- 40:49Speaker 2: how are, where do you sit with that in terms
- 40:52Speaker 2: of growing the game and growing your own personal brand? Yeah.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I mean, I think it's great, obviously, like you said, for,
- 40:59Speaker 4: you know, those guys are helping us like growing the
- 41:01Speaker 4: game and yeah, but there's definitely some chirps and jokes like, Um,
- 41:04Speaker 4: I don't know, even it's just like you walk into
- 41:06Speaker 4: Lululemon in Vancouver and you see Betsy's poster on the
- 41:09Speaker 4: wall and you're like, it's just like weird. It's just
- 41:11Speaker 4: like funny to me. And, uh, yeah, we definitely make
- 41:13Speaker 4: a lot of jokes and chirp on both stuff like
- 41:14Speaker 4: that in the summer. But, uh, I mean, obviously, I mean,
- 41:18Speaker 4: I think he knows like it's all, it's all great. And, uh,
- 41:20Speaker 4: you know, we, we all, you know, probably, probably a
- 41:23Speaker 4: little jealous if we're not getting those deals.
- 41:25Speaker 5: Right.
- 41:25Speaker 4: So he's, uh, but no, he makes some jokes about it. And, uh, yeah, he, he's,
- 41:29Speaker 4: he's a funny guy about that stuff.
- 41:30Speaker 2: How's his acting?
- 41:33Speaker 4: Uh, I don't think it's great, but I mean, I
- 41:35Speaker 4: don't think I'd be any better. So that's, uh, I've.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Got to loosen the shoulders up a little bit. He's
- 41:40Speaker 2: got to loosen them up a bit.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 2: It's hard. I know it's, it's crazy. It is really
- 41:45Speaker 2: crazy how Nate, like back in our day, like, you know,
- 41:48Speaker 2: you'd come in the room, you'd get just, you post
- 41:51Speaker 2: something on Instagram that was a little bit offsides and
- 41:54Speaker 2: you'd get just buried.
- 41:56Speaker 6: Oh, I would get absolutely demolished now for what I'm
- 42:00Speaker 6: posting every day.
- 42:00Speaker 3: So are you a.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Big– Oh, your jiu-jitsu stuff? No, it's kind of– If
- 42:04Speaker 2: you didn't know, Nate loves jiu-jitsu, and he posts it
- 42:07Speaker 2: all the time of guys rolling around with sweaty guys.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I love it.
- 42:10Speaker 1: It's kind of– I love it.
- 42:11Speaker 6: Are you– so, like, yeah, to follow up what JD said, like,
- 42:15Speaker 6: are you into the social media? Like, do you want to– like,
- 42:18Speaker 6: you know, because there are some players that are very
- 42:20Speaker 6: active in it. Like, are you a guy that, you know,
- 42:22Speaker 6: posts or, you know, trying to, you know, grow the
- 42:24Speaker 6: game like JD said?
- 42:27Speaker 4: Um honestly i haven't really been recently uh yeah i
- 42:31Speaker 4: feel like i'm not like against it like i would
- 42:32Speaker 4: maybe but just i don't know i feel like i
- 42:34Speaker 4: personally like that stuff doesn't come naturally to me like
- 42:37Speaker 4: uh even like i don't know like if i go
- 42:39Speaker 4: to post i'm like well i kind of like feel
- 42:40Speaker 4: weird like awkward like what am i doing like but
- 42:43Speaker 4: but i do think it's a good thing like i
- 42:45Speaker 4: could probably you know at some point maybe do more
- 42:47Speaker 4: of it or should i think i did a bit
- 42:49Speaker 4: more when i was younger like draft year and all
- 42:51Speaker 4: that stuff uh So, yeah, I could probably get back
- 42:54Speaker 4: to that more. But, I mean, also, like, with the
- 42:55Speaker 4: agencies now, like, they can kind of help with that
- 42:58Speaker 4: stuff a bit. So, yeah, right now it hasn't really
- 43:00Speaker 4: been a focus. But, you know, I'm, like, I'm open
- 43:02Speaker 4: to it down the road.
- 43:05Speaker 1: I want to ask you as well. My last one
- 43:06Speaker 1: for me, Kent, is the fact you're the first University
- 43:09Speaker 1: of Michigan player to score on in Michigan in an
- 43:11Speaker 1: NHL game. When did you know you were going to
- 43:13Speaker 1: try that? And what was the response when you did it?
- 43:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like. like back then I was, uh,
- 43:20Speaker 4: it was pretty like in my, in my game in
- 43:22Speaker 4: terms of like, if I had a lot of space
- 43:23Speaker 4: behind the net, like I knew I could, could try it.
- 43:25Speaker 4: I think I'd tried it like earlier that season. It
- 43:27Speaker 4: was like just missed the net or something. And, um,
- 43:31Speaker 4: you know, it didn't get like a negative response in
- 43:33Speaker 4: terms of like guys were like, Oh yeah, it was
- 43:34Speaker 4: a good play. Like you almost scored. So I, I
- 43:36Speaker 4: knew like, okay, if it's open, I'll try it again.
- 43:38Speaker 4: And yeah, it was kind of a perfect situation. Like, uh,
- 43:42Speaker 4: so yeah, that was, that was a fun goal.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I'm glad that worked out.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Uh, you know, Nate, sorry, Kent, last one for me. Um,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you a little bit, you've been
- 43:51Speaker 2: vocal about your faith and stuff like that. And you
- 43:53Speaker 2: see a lot more guys in the NHL talk about that.
- 43:55Speaker 2: You know, when did that become something for you that,
- 43:59Speaker 2: you know, you wanted to go towards and, and, you know,
- 44:02Speaker 2: just talk a little bit about your faith.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Yeah. I'm, uh, appreciate the question.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:06Speaker 4: I think I guess I was like two and a
- 44:08Speaker 4: half years ago for me. Like I never grew up
- 44:09Speaker 4: around it, like didn't know anything about it. Um, but yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 4: when I kind of, you know, felt that and like
- 44:15Speaker 4: kind of looked into it more and, you know, started
- 44:17Speaker 4: to believe and think that was the truth.
- 44:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 4: It's something that, um, you know, I don't want to
- 44:20Speaker 4: be afraid of. And obviously sometimes I feel like it
- 44:22Speaker 4: can be hard to like, but, um, yeah, definitely something
- 44:25Speaker 4: I don't want to be ashamed of at all. And, uh, yeah,
- 44:27Speaker 4: I think you see it in other sports a lot,
- 44:29Speaker 4: like football, basketball, these guys are, you know, talking about
- 44:32Speaker 4: it a lot more. And, um, so yeah, definitely, uh, yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 4: I appreciate the question and something that for me now,
- 44:38Speaker 4: it's just, I mean, it's changed my life. It's been amazing. And, um, yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 4: definitely just, just uh just think it's unreal.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Was it was there a moment that made you seek
- 44:47Speaker 2: that out or was it just curiosity uh yeah.
- 44:50Speaker 4: No there was a moment like I feel like for
- 44:52Speaker 4: me just uh kind of starting to like uh I
- 44:55Speaker 4: guess my second year in the NHL like just some
- 44:57Speaker 4: harder times uh you know nothing like too crazy but
- 45:00Speaker 4: just kind of thinking like oh there's got to be
- 45:01Speaker 4: something more to you know just hockey like that's kind
- 45:03Speaker 4: of all my focus my whole life and just like
- 45:06Speaker 4: more life and kind of believe that yeah there's there's
- 45:08Speaker 4: uh you know a creator and whatnot and I kind
- 45:10Speaker 4: of just, you know, got invited to a Bible study
- 45:12Speaker 4: at Ohio State here, and kind of made an excuse to, like,
- 45:15Speaker 4: not go, and then got hurt, like, the next week,
- 45:18Speaker 4: and when I was hurt, I was kind of like, okay, like,
- 45:20Speaker 4: I feel like I need to, like, figure this out, like, what, like,
- 45:22Speaker 4: what's true, what's, you know, what does it mean, kind
- 45:25Speaker 4: of thing, and so I kind of went to that,
- 45:27Speaker 4: and I could just feel that, and, like, I just
- 45:29Speaker 4: couldn't believe, like, the true stuff, like, in my life
- 45:31Speaker 4: that I, you know, was, like, reading and seeing, and
- 45:34Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, like, this makes so much sense, and, like,
- 45:36Speaker 4: I feel like, yeah, it's, it's really like a freeing thing.
- 45:38Speaker 4: It wasn't something like, Oh, like what I thought where
- 45:40Speaker 4: it's like, Oh, you got to follow these rules or
- 45:42Speaker 4: be this good person or whatever. But it's like, no,
- 45:43Speaker 4: it's just, uh, you know, God loves us all and, um,
- 45:47Speaker 4: you know, created us for a purpose and wants a
- 45:49Speaker 4: relationship with us. So that was something I never really understood.
- 45:52Speaker 4: And so it was super freeing and just, uh, yeah. So,
- 45:55Speaker 4: I mean, I love, and again, it's not, it doesn't
- 45:57Speaker 4: make your life perfect or easy or anything, but, um, no,
- 46:00Speaker 4: it's definitely, I think it's true and it's awesome.
- 46:05Speaker 2: I have a quick one here.
- 46:08Speaker 5: I was just going to ask a quick, Ken, I mean,
- 46:10Speaker 5: the thing that sticks out for you as a player
- 46:13Speaker 5: and a bunch of guys you came up with like Bedard,
- 46:15Speaker 5: I mean, the puck skill you guys show is just
- 46:18Speaker 5: next level compared to what we've seen maybe from JD
- 46:21Speaker 5: and Nate's generation. I'm curious how you, you specifically, like
- 46:25Speaker 5: you've been great on the shootout in the league. Like
- 46:27Speaker 5: where did you first start kind of studying that? Is
- 46:30Speaker 5: that something you found on YouTube and how have you,
- 46:34Speaker 5: being been able to kind of i guess develop that
- 46:36Speaker 5: skill where did where does that come.
- 46:38Speaker 4: From yeah i think uh for me i was younger
- 46:41Speaker 4: like i don't know i just loved uh love stick
- 46:43Speaker 4: handling in the basement like mess around uh and so
- 46:46Speaker 4: i feel like i just watch like guys in the
- 46:48Speaker 4: league and kind of just try to replicate them replicate
- 46:50Speaker 4: their moves so like patrick came this big one for
- 46:52Speaker 4: me when i was younger um so yeah if i
- 46:55Speaker 4: just i don't know kind of just just work on
- 46:57Speaker 4: my skill and i i just i don't know i
- 46:58Speaker 4: really enjoyed it like it wasn't like something that i
- 47:00Speaker 4: was a felt like I was working so hard at it.
- 47:03Speaker 4: It was just like, you know, when I got home
- 47:04Speaker 4: from school, I loved to go down to the basement,
- 47:06Speaker 4: shoot pucks and mess around. And so I feel like that,
- 47:08Speaker 4: you know, really helped me. And so, yeah, I definitely
- 47:12Speaker 4: think in terms with the shootouts too, I helped a lot.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And obviously now it's, it's pretty rewarding that it can actually,
- 47:18Speaker 4: you know, help our team win some games and whatnot. So, yeah,
- 47:20Speaker 4: I mean, I really enjoy the shootouts. So they're good.
- 47:23Speaker 5: Everyone mentions Kaner. When I asked that question, every single
- 47:26Speaker 5: person mentions Patrick Kane. Is he like, he's the guy
- 47:29Speaker 5: for guys your age, right?
- 47:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like it, I mean, like, I feel
- 47:33Speaker 4: like every guy who, you know, like, wanted to have
- 47:35Speaker 4: good hands, like, he was the one, kind of, the
- 47:37Speaker 4: most highlight reel, and also, like, doing it effectively, like,
- 47:40Speaker 4: you know, doing it in games, doing it in playoffs,
- 47:42Speaker 4: to win games, and stuff like that, so, yeah, I mean, he's,
- 47:45Speaker 4: he's unreal, it's, it's pretty cool now, like, I get
- 47:47Speaker 4: to watch a bit of the Chicago game, like, him
- 47:49Speaker 4: and Bedard together, and, I don't know, it's just fun
- 47:51Speaker 4: for me to watch, I think it's good for the
- 47:52Speaker 4: league to have those two together, excited about what they
- 47:54Speaker 4: can do.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Was it wild playing against him the first time?
- 47:58Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, it was, it was pretty cool, it was, uh,
- 48:01Speaker 4: yeah I couldn't really believe it so I was like
- 48:03Speaker 4: looking down in warm-ups like almost like make sure he's
- 48:05Speaker 4: there and I'm like yeah it's a weird feeling but
- 48:08Speaker 4: it's so cool I mean obviously um yeah just uh
- 48:11Speaker 4: I mean great player so it's.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Did you did you line up next to him at
- 48:14Speaker 2: all or like hello sir.
- 48:15Speaker 4: I I definitely did line up yes I don't think
- 48:19Speaker 4: I I don't think I talked to him though I
- 48:21Speaker 4: think it was just yeah I mean I was probably
- 48:23Speaker 4: nervous but I'm like I'll just play the game don't
- 48:25Speaker 4: need to you know be this fan boy but i
- 48:27Speaker 4: i will say i did get a stick from him
- 48:29Speaker 4: actually he signed a stick for me so that was
- 48:30Speaker 4: super nice because uh boquist on my team that year
- 48:33Speaker 4: uh he played for chicago and he knew i loved
- 48:35Speaker 4: caner so he asked him for me and so yeah
- 48:37Speaker 4: that was super.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Nice that that's always so funny like guys will come
- 48:40Speaker 2: in and they're nervous with the old guy and and
- 48:43Speaker 2: when you'll talk to the old guys it's like you
- 48:44Speaker 2: just go up to be like hey like love your
- 48:46Speaker 2: work like i used to go up to guys like
- 48:48Speaker 2: i skated by nick lindstrom i'm like dude i love
- 48:50Speaker 2: you man like you're the best like We're about to
- 48:53Speaker 2: eliminate you from playoffs, but I love you. Like, you're awesome. It, like,
- 48:57Speaker 2: disarms him a little bit. They just kind of, like,
- 48:59Speaker 2: start laughing a little bit. But, yeah, that's funny that
- 49:01Speaker 2: he is larger than life. And, I mean, he's such
- 49:04Speaker 2: an amazing steward of the game. I mean, you had
- 49:06Speaker 2: some amazing guys to look up to for a player
- 49:09Speaker 2: of your style. You know, Johnny Hockey and Patrick Kane
- 49:13Speaker 2: and so many guys that, to mirror your game after,
- 49:15Speaker 2: are just amazing. No, definitely, yeah.
- 49:18Speaker 4: And I feel like, yeah, not even mentioning Johnny, but
- 49:20Speaker 4: I feel like there's like certain moves for him too.
- 49:23Speaker 4: And like, there's even like a couple of things he
- 49:24Speaker 4: does where I'm like, Oh, I'd love to score a
- 49:26Speaker 4: goal like that. Like exactly like him. And I feel
- 49:28Speaker 4: like I'd done them like in practice or whatever, but
- 49:30Speaker 4: it hasn't like came to, came to life yet. So no,
- 49:33Speaker 4: I mean, obviously, yeah, he had sick hands too.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Nate, anything from you?
- 49:38Speaker 3: We good.
- 49:39Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I was just going to, you know, going
- 49:42Speaker 6: back to what you're talking about, you know, with your faith, I,
- 49:44Speaker 6: I was just so impressed because at your age to
- 49:47Speaker 6: be able to recognize that and, um, know that you
- 49:50Speaker 6: need to lean in. Like I would imagine that your
- 49:53Speaker 6: game has benefited as well because, you know, like you said,
- 49:57Speaker 6: it's not all about hockey and the fact that you've,
- 49:59Speaker 6: like you said, leaned into your faith.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Has your game benefited from that? You think?
- 50:03Speaker 4: Uh, yeah, I think maybe like, I feel like it's like,
- 50:07Speaker 4: it's hard for me to say like what, like exactly,
- 50:09Speaker 4: but I definitely think so. I think it should help.
- 50:12Speaker 4: And it has at times, I think there's times too,
- 50:14Speaker 4: where like, even though I'm like, you know, Christian or whatever, believe,
- 50:17Speaker 4: but like, I'm not really like living that way where
- 50:19Speaker 4: I'm like, Oh, like I'm, I'm worrying, I'm doing all
- 50:22Speaker 4: this stuff. That's like the opposite of, you know, like
- 50:24Speaker 4: what it would say. And so like, there's times where
- 50:26Speaker 4: I haven't, you know, probably played the best where I'm like, Oh,
- 50:29Speaker 4: I was too worried or too, I don't know, like
- 50:31Speaker 4: caring about what, you know, people think of me or whatnot. So,
- 50:34Speaker 4: but I do think, like you said, like it should
- 50:36Speaker 4: be that thing where it should help and should help
- 50:38Speaker 4: me be free to just, you know, like serve, serve
- 50:40Speaker 4: my teammates, serve the organization instead of being all selfish
- 50:43Speaker 4: and worried about me, you know, all the time. So, yeah,
- 50:47Speaker 4: I think that's, you're right. It should be very helpful.
- 50:49Speaker 4: And I feel like it is, you know, what I'm
- 50:51Speaker 4: actually following.
- 50:52Speaker 2: That's a great perspective.
- 50:54Speaker 3: Yep, exactly.
- 50:55Speaker 1: And it's all about hockey. And certainly you're doing a
- 50:56Speaker 1: great job both on the ice and off the ice.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Kent Johnson, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Good to have you
- 51:01Speaker 1: reunited with JD and best of success in Columbus. Thanks
- 51:04Speaker 1: so much, man.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you guys.
- 51:07Speaker 2: I can't, before we leave, I can't believe you didn't
- 51:09Speaker 2: mention the absolute sweet dish I made you against China.
- 51:12Speaker 4: Dude, that's so funny because I was actually thinking about it.
- 51:15Speaker 4: I was like, they got to pull the video up
- 51:17Speaker 4: on this because, yeah, I remember that, right? A little
- 51:20Speaker 4: sauce coming off the bench for me, perfect weight. And yeah,
- 51:24Speaker 4: so you got to pull up the clip and tweet
- 51:25Speaker 4: that out or something.
- 51:27Speaker 3: He couldn't believe it. AV.
- 51:30Speaker 2: He gets, he gets, he's like, that was you? And
- 51:33Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, I could still play. And he's like, no,
- 51:36Speaker 2: he's like, who are you? And I was like, dude,
- 51:39Speaker 2: 699 games in NHL, I could still dish the rock.
- 51:42Speaker 1: He was sick. He was good in the Olympics.
- 51:44Speaker 2: I wish Claude played him more.
- 51:47Speaker 4: Oh, thank you.
- 51:48Speaker 3: That's funny.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Great stuff, Kat. Thanks so much, buddy.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, guys.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Cinefile in 60 is Miller Night Football. It's a documentary
- 52:04Speaker 1: right now on HBO Max. 40 minutes of it when
- 52:06Speaker 1: Dennis Miller was on Monday Night Football, which to me
- 52:09Speaker 1: is still one of the craziest things ever. This guy's
- 52:10Speaker 1: a comedian.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Super funny.
- 52:11Speaker 1: He was great in the 80s. And all of a sudden,
- 52:13Speaker 1: they're looking for someone to mix up the booth. And
- 52:15Speaker 1: for years, they had Howard Cosell in the booth. He
- 52:16Speaker 1: was not a comedian. He was a journalist. He was
- 52:17Speaker 1: not a true football guy. Had it with Dandy Dawn, Meredith,
- 52:20Speaker 1: and all the rest of it. So they bring in
- 52:22Speaker 1: Dennis Miller. Everyone's like, wait, what? The comedian is going
- 52:24Speaker 1: to be there? And he was great. The first year,
- 52:26Speaker 1: he was funny, looking for shots. He's with, obviously, Al Michaels,
- 52:29Speaker 1: who's a legend, and with Dan Fouts, who's a great quarterback.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And then year two, Fred Gadelli comes in, who's a
- 52:34Speaker 1: legendary producer, still does Sunday Night Football on NBC, and
- 52:36Speaker 1: things went sideways quickly. They said part of the problem
- 52:38Speaker 1: was that Dennis Miller actually wanted to be like.
- 52:40Speaker 3: A football guy.
- 52:41Speaker 1: So imagine in the hockey context, if I was doing play-by-play,
- 52:44Speaker 1: and J.D. and Nate were doing color, and all of
- 52:46Speaker 1: a sudden we just brought in– You know, pick a
- 52:48Speaker 1: comedian right now. Pick somebody out there. This guy's going
- 52:50Speaker 1: to be that guy. You know, all of a sudden,
- 52:53Speaker 1: this person wants to be a football person, and Dennis
- 52:55Speaker 1: made it a little bit awkward a little bit. That's
- 52:56Speaker 1: what Godelli felt. Also, he was kind of buddies with
- 52:59Speaker 1: these guys. Dave Camp, we met the Cowboys coach. He
- 53:01Speaker 1: had two of Dennis Miller's books. He wanted to sign them. So, obviously,
- 53:03Speaker 1: he's not going to criticize these guys. Imagine if... And
- 53:06Speaker 1: Carberry's telling Nate what a great guy he is. Well,
- 53:07Speaker 1: I can't criticize Spencer Carberry. He's a big fan of
- 53:09Speaker 1: my works. All of a sudden, Dennis Miller became.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Too much schmoozing.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Ended up getting the new deal. Like, you know what?
- 53:13Speaker 3: Sorry, guys.
- 53:14Speaker 1: We're going to get John Madden. Dennis Miller's out. John
- 53:16Speaker 1: Madden's replacing him on Monday Night Football. But, Tal, I
- 53:18Speaker 1: know you saw the doc. One of my favorite parts
- 53:20Speaker 1: was this. Because, again, you're looking as a comedian just
- 53:22Speaker 1: to be funny, just for moments. And there was something
- 53:25Speaker 1: about on the field. He goes, and he had an
- 53:27Speaker 1: obscure art reference. And Al Michaels hits the cough button
- 53:30Speaker 1: and goes, what the fuck are you talking about? And
- 53:33Speaker 1: Don Oldmeyer, the producer, gets an issue and goes, because
- 53:35Speaker 1: he fashioned himself as a big archive. He's like, nope,
- 53:37Speaker 1: that's exactly right. Good reference.
- 53:39Speaker 3: Keep it going, Dennis.
- 53:40Speaker 2: He had these arcane, ridiculous.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Thoughts a lot of football people didn't get. But at
- 53:44Speaker 1: the same time, Tal, he got people talking about Monday
- 53:46Speaker 1: Night Football again.
- 53:48Speaker 5: It was a huge story when it happened. He was
- 53:50Speaker 5: on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which for a broadcaster
- 53:54Speaker 5: or a comedian is extremely rare.
- 53:56Speaker 1: And I found it interesting.
- 53:57Speaker 5: You could see in the interviews that he did that,
- 53:59Speaker 5: he knew while this was going on that this could
- 54:01Speaker 5: definitely be the end of his career.
- 54:03Speaker 3: He knew this.
- 54:04Speaker 5: He wasn't just going in and saying, well, let's see
- 54:06Speaker 5: what happens. He knew the stakes were extremely high. And
- 54:09Speaker 5: you were trying to think of a hockey equivalent.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I feel like Shane Gillis calling a Flyers game with
- 54:13Speaker 1: Nate and Jim Jackson. I was going to be like,
- 54:16Speaker 1: Shane Gillis just doing a Flyers game.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I love that you brought that up because I wanted
- 54:21Speaker 2: to roll this into gambles on live television. How about
- 54:27Speaker 2: his monologue on SNL the other night?
- 54:29Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 54:29Speaker 1: Heavily criticized again.
- 54:31Speaker 2: He called the girls at the... What did you make
- 54:33Speaker 2: of that?
- 54:34Speaker 1: I actually haven't seen it yet. I just saw the
- 54:36Speaker 1: headlines saying that Shane Gillis bombed his monologue again.
- 54:39Speaker 2: He said... They said specifically he took.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Shots at gays and women. They said that's not the
- 54:43Speaker 1: spot you're going to get a good reception.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Well, number one, he said, I hate going to the
- 54:48Speaker 2: gym now because all the gays are super jacked and
- 54:50Speaker 2: hot and make me feel bad. So he said that,
- 54:54Speaker 2: which is like, I don't know. It was more what
- 54:56Speaker 2: he said about women. But he said women are whores
- 54:59Speaker 2: now wearing skimpy outfits at the gym. And he goes,
- 55:03Speaker 2: I look like a creep in all their TikToks. But
- 55:07Speaker 2: if you watch Tires, he does a whole episode on that,
- 55:11Speaker 2: how he gets caught ogling a girl and then has
- 55:14Speaker 2: a panic attack and has a slight arrhythmia because the
- 55:17Speaker 2: girl says she's going to put him on blast. So
- 55:20Speaker 2: he literally, it's kind of, it's pretty crazy. I mean,
- 55:23Speaker 2: he is, he is, he goes for it. He swings.
- 55:28Speaker 2: He goes there.
- 55:29Speaker 5: I was just going to say quick, sorry, JD, that
- 55:31Speaker 5: you were looking for a hockey equivalent. There was one
- 55:34Speaker 5: when George Strombolopoulos became the host of Hockey Night in Canada.
- 55:37Speaker 3: There you go.
- 55:38Speaker 1: That's a good one.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Where is George now?
- 55:39Speaker 5: Like Dennis Miller, that did not last very long.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah, where is George now?
- 55:44Speaker 3: That was quick.
- 55:45Speaker 5: He's still doing his thing.
- 55:46Speaker 1: That was a huge deal in Canada.
- 55:50Speaker 5: You want to talk about adding an outsider to a
- 55:53Speaker 5: broadcasting institution. That's what happened with, I forget what year
- 55:56Speaker 5: it was, but that was huge news for Hockey Night
- 55:58Speaker 5: in Canada when it happened.
- 55:59Speaker 1: That's a good comment. How about the reaction when they're
- 56:01Speaker 1: doing the audition? And when Al Michaels mentioned a player,
- 56:04Speaker 1: it was Cladius Hunt. And Dennis Miller goes, what? And
- 56:06Speaker 1: he's Cladius Hunt. That's a player, that's a sorority chick.
- 56:10Speaker 1: And they go, we got our guy. That's what they do.
- 56:12Speaker 1: We're going to put this guy in Monday Night Football.
- 56:14Speaker 3: Really, really funny.
- 56:15Speaker 2: It just goes to show.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Somebody's got to take chances.
- 56:17Speaker 2: The hockey equivalent would be Amazon throwing me on there
- 56:22Speaker 2: on Wednesday night.
- 56:23Speaker 3: There you go, JD, just going off. That would be
- 56:26Speaker 3: the option.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Let's see if that happens.
- 56:28Speaker 2: During a Flyers game.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Interviewing talk. Just going off on big talk.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 56:34Speaker 1: It'd have to be talk and JD together.
- 56:38Speaker 2: There'd be explicit throwing back and forth.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. No, there wouldn't be.
- 56:43Speaker 1: Definitely check out Miller Night Football. I've got to go
- 56:46Speaker 1: watch this monologue here with Shane Gillicks. I do like
- 56:48Speaker 1: a lot of headlines, as always. Meantime, Colorado assistant coach
- 56:52Speaker 1: Dave Haxtell behind the Avalanche Bench Wednesday night against Dallas.
- 56:55Speaker 1: By Thursday, he was gone. Arizona State announcing Thursday morning
- 56:58Speaker 1: he is their new head coach, taking over a program
- 57:00Speaker 1: that has been in disarray since the horrible events of
- 57:03Speaker 1: the summer workout, leaving Blues prospect Matthew Mayich in the
- 57:06Speaker 1: hospital to collapsing from heat stroke. Since then, seven players...
- 57:09Speaker 1: have anonymously sent a letter to school president Michael Crow
- 57:12Speaker 1: disputing the findings of the school's investigation, and former coach
- 57:15Speaker 1: Greg Powers has placed unadministrative leave and has since left
- 57:18Speaker 1: the program. Haxel, incredible success, J.D., in college, head coach
- 57:21Speaker 1: at North Dakota, took the program to the Frozen Four
- 57:23Speaker 1: seven times in 11 seasons and was a finalist for
- 57:26Speaker 1: National Coach of the Year eight times. How do you
- 57:29Speaker 1: think he can try to resurrect the program?
- 57:32Speaker 2: You know, building back trust, I think, in the program
- 57:34Speaker 2: and the players, and now when you really look at
- 57:38Speaker 2: asu being a a desirable place in terms of you
- 57:43Speaker 2: know not only the facilities i mean i'm out here
- 57:45Speaker 2: the facilities the the city the lifestyle now you have
- 57:49Speaker 2: matt green as well he just came in as the
- 57:51Speaker 2: the d coach you have taylor pyatt that's there he
- 57:54Speaker 2: was i think they're going to keep him as well
- 57:56Speaker 2: about up front so taylor pyatt matt green and dave
- 58:00Speaker 2: haxtall so to me i'm like that's that's about as
- 58:04Speaker 2: easy as recruiting as you can get is you have
- 58:06Speaker 2: guys with pure NHL experience. So if you're a kid
- 58:09Speaker 2: that wants to make the NHL, I mean, look what
- 58:12Speaker 2: you have. And then not only that, but you have
- 58:14Speaker 2: just a plethora of ex NHL guys that are around here,
- 58:19Speaker 2: ex coyotes guys, you know, ton of us. So there's
- 58:23Speaker 2: so much to like in terms of development. Um, and
- 58:26Speaker 2: I had hack and, uh, world championships. He's the D
- 58:29Speaker 2: coach for me at world championships. And I really liked him.
- 58:31Speaker 2: He's a great guy. You know, he's a, he's a
- 58:33Speaker 2: great human being. Um, cares about the players. So very soft,
- 58:38Speaker 2: you know, very, a little bit of a quieter coach,
- 58:41Speaker 2: not as fiery, but I think, uh, it's really going
- 58:44Speaker 2: to benefit the program. And I think it's going to be, listen, it's,
- 58:48Speaker 2: it's a horrific, sad situation for the Mayich family and, um,
- 58:54Speaker 2: you know, this program, but, you know, at the end
- 58:56Speaker 2: of this, the, not to lose sight of that, you know,
- 58:59Speaker 2: there's a kid in severe critical condition, but, you know,
- 59:02Speaker 2: in terms of the program, I think, They had to
- 59:05Speaker 2: move this direction. They had to move out of the
- 59:07Speaker 2: way and they did the right thing by bringing in
- 59:11Speaker 2: some guys that also wanted to be there because Haxtell's
- 59:14Speaker 2: on an NHL bench in the NHL.
- 59:17Speaker 1: He doesn't really.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Have any crazy ties to Arizona and decides to drop
- 59:24Speaker 2: everything midseason on a cup-contending, potentially cup-winning team to come here.
- 59:29Speaker 2: It says a lot about what he wants to do
- 59:31Speaker 2: and what this program means to him.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I would say this.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Sorry, I was just going to say, I'd say the
- 59:37Speaker 3: same for even like.
- 59:38Speaker 2: You know Greeny, right?
- 59:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I know Greener and just how important he is
- 59:43Speaker 6: to that Kings organization.
- 59:44Speaker 3: I know from being there. I mean, he works in
- 59:47Speaker 3: player development.
- 59:48Speaker 6: A lot of these guys like Quinton Byfield, Brant Clark,
- 59:51Speaker 6: you know, a lot of these guys have been developed
- 59:54Speaker 6: and Matt Green has been a huge part of that,
- 59:56Speaker 6: like huge part of that and some of those prospects there. So,
- 59:59Speaker 6: you know, the same thing, the fact that he's leaving
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: the Kings organization where he was, you know, one, two
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: cups has been there forever. And like, like you said,
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: he wants to go and, um, help this, help this,
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: this program is, it says a lot. So if it's
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: me and I'm a college kid and I'm being recruited,
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: like that's a no brainer being able to go play
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: at a place like ASU and to have those coaches
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: behind the bench teaching you. I mean, that's, that's, that's,
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: that's special that those guys are going there. So, um, it's, it's,
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: it's good news.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: And last, we hand out flowers to Cam Talbot, making
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: NHL history on Saturday night, getting the W in a
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: shootout for the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Penguins. 39
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: years of age is a win for nine different NHL teams,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: breaking a record he shared with three others, including Ron
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Coughpley's Tugnut. Since becoming Henrik Lundqvist's backup in New York
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: in 2013, Talbot with wins Rangers, Oilers, Flyers, Flames, Wild, Senators, Kings,
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Red Wings, and the Blue Jackets. 21 wins shy of
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: 300 for his career. Way to go, Cam Talbot. That's
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: a hell of a record, J.D.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: I mean, just an absolute... I mean, what a stud.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: The only story I have of Cam Talbot is during
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: the bubble, it was after the first round, and if... Nate,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: were you in Toronto, or were you in Edmonton?
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: Toronto.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: I was in Toronto. So we were in Edmonton, and
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: it was an absolute cattle car at the Joey Tomato,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: or whatever the chop house. We'd go chop it up
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: at the chop house, the steakhouse, and there'd be like,
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: you know... 150 NHL players just testosterone oozing out of
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: the place and me and Alex Golgoski had you know
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: we had a couple pops after round one and we
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: were feeling ourselves and a little kerfuffle broke out because
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: between James Neal and Rasmus Anderson because there was like
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: a little bit of a I can't get into the
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: personals of it but there was a little bit of
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: a history there in terms of dislike and Neal was
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: no longer with he had played with Rasmus in Calgary
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: and then he was in Edmonton so it's It's James
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Neal sitting next to Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse. And
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: then it's Rasmus Anderson and James Neal going at it
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: from across the bar. And Cam Talbot was playing with
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Rasmus Anderson at the time. So me and Alex Golgas,
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: you're standing next to Cam Talbot and we're sitting there
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: and we're just whispering in his ear, like the devil
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: on his shoulder. We're like, that's bullshit, man. Like you
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: gotta go, go help your teammate out. Like, like go,
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: like go get him. Like go get, I'm like, We're like,
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: you can take Conor. You can jump Conor.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: Stir it up, baby.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: We're like, jump him. We're like, don't be. And he'd
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: look back at us. He's like, guys, stop. And Golgoski's like, man,
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't let that happen if that was my teammate.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: And then Milan Lucic kept running in and wanted to fight,
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: you know, said, I'll fight Darnell if you want me to, Rasmus,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: because he was in Cali. It was amazing. But we were,
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Cam Talbot was like, these guys are, pissing me off,
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: and it was me and Goose in the back just going,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: come on, do it, man. You'll do it.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Can't tell, but smelling it from a mile away. That's
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: why he's a cool customer all these years.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Easy.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Thanks for checking out NHL Unscripted. Two more episodes left.
