- 0:00Hello and welcome back to Spy Trader , your goto podcast for navigating the everchanging tides of the stock market !
- 0:07I'm your host , Captain Cashflow Chuck , and it's 5:05 pm on Tuesday , July 22nd , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:16We've just wrapped up another fascinating trading day , and let me tell you , there's a lot to unpack .
- 0:22The market is showing us a really complex picture right now , a mix of soaring highs and some underlying caution .
- 0:30The S&P 500 has been on a tear , hitting record closing highs , including its third consecutive one today .
- 0:38It was just shy of its alltime record on July 18th , having set seven new records in the past 15 trading sessions .
- 0:45The Nasdaq Composite also hit recent highs , though it took a slight breather today , snapping a sixday winning streak .
- 0:53Even the Dow Jones Industrial Average is gaining ground , sitting about one percent away from its first new high since last December .
- 1:02This market optimism , folks , is largely fueled by a stellar earnings season and some encouraging economic data .
- 1:09We're seeing roughly 88 percent of S&P 500 companies surpassing Wall Street estimates in their Q2 reports , which is fantastic news .
- 1:19But here's the kicker : valuations are pretty elevated .
- 1:23US stocks are looking expensive compared to bonds , and that negative equity risk premium tells us that a lot of good news is already baked into prices .
- 1:33This means if earnings reports disappoint , we could see some sharper corrections .
- 1:38On the economic front , our inflation rate for June came in at 2.7 percent yearoveryear , a slight uptick .
- 1:46Core inflation is also around 2.7 percent .
- 1:49The Federal Reserve has held the federal funds rate steady at 4.25 to 4.50 percent , with the market pricing in a very high probability of them holding steady in July .
- 2:02However , there's a 57.9 percent chance of a quarterpoint rate cut by September , which is a significant possibility .
- 2:10Mortgage rates are a bit elevated , hovering around 6.75 to 7 percent .
- 2:16While we saw a contraction in Q1 GDP , the GDPNow model is forecasting a more optimistic 2.4 percent growth for Q2 .
- 2:27The job market remains resilient , adding 147,000 jobs in June , and the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1 percent .
- 2:36Retail sales were also better than expected , up 0.6 percent , showing robust consumer activity .
- 2:43But don't forget the wildcard : tariff uncertainty from the Trump administration continues to impact some businesses and consumer prices .
- 2:52Now , let's dive into some sector specifics , because the market isn't a monolith , folks Technology and AI continue to be the shining stars , with Nvidia reportedly becoming the world's first four trillion dollar company , surpassing Microsoft .
- 3:08ETFs like the Invesco QQQ Trust and the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , or XLK , have certainly enjoyed the ride .
- 3:18But the big test for tech is coming this week , with Tesla , Alphabet , Intel , and IBM reporting earnings .
- 3:26Their numbers will be crucial for the market's continued momentum , especially given those high valuations .
- 3:32Homebuilders like D.R.
- 3:34Horton and PulteGroup saw their shares surge by 17 and 12 percent respectively on strong earnings , despite those elevated mortgage rates and tariffs .
- 3:44Lennar also rose over 8 percent .
- 3:47This tells us there's some serious underlying demand or smart strategies at play in housing .
- 3:54The Aerospace and Defense sector has also performed well this year , driven by global tensions .
- 4:00Northrop Grumman jumped over nine percent after strong sales and profits , but Lockheed Martin tumbled nearly 11 percent due to program losses .
- 4:09In financials , major banks like JPMorgan , Goldman Sachs , Bank of America , and Citigroup delivered strong secondquarter earnings , largely due to high trading revenues .
- 4:22However , their stock prices saw only modest gains , as the market had largely anticipated these strong results .
- 4:29The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLF , would encompass these giants .
- 4:35Communications is the secondbest performing sector this year , but it's broadly undervalued , with Meta Platforms and Netflix accounting for a big chunk of its returns .
- 4:47And energy stocks , despite recent oil price dips , are still seen as undervalued by some analysts , potentially offering a good hedge against inflation or geopolitical risks .
- 4:58So , where does that leave us , you ask ?
- 5:01Time for Captain Cashflow Chuck's concrete recommendations !
- 5:04First off , acknowledge those high valuations and diversify .
- 5:09While growth stocks have been leading the charge , the negative equity risk premium tells us bonds are looking relatively attractive .
- 5:17For broad market exposure , I'm talking about core portfolio ETFs like the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF , VOO , or the iShares CORE S&P 500 ETF , IVV .
- 5:31To balance that equity risk , consider a core fixedincome ETF such as the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND , or the iShares Core U.S.
- 5:40Aggregate Bond ETF , AGG .
- 5:43These bond ETFs can provide stability and income , especially with bond yields offering competitive returns .
- 5:51Second , be selective with your growth exposure , and proceed with caution .
- 5:56The AI narrative and strong tech earnings are powerful , but given their runups , selective entry and risk management are key .
- 6:04The Invesco QQQ Trust is a solid pick for concentrated exposure to the largest nonfinancial Nasdaq companies , which are heavily techfocused .
- 6:13For a broader tech play within the S&P 500 , the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK , is suitable .
- 6:23Just be mindful of potential volatility around those upcoming Big Tech earnings , and consider dollarcost averaging into these positions to smooth out your entry timing .
- 6:33Third , let's explore some value and cyclical opportunities .
- 6:37Sectors that haven't seen the stratospheric gains of tech might offer better value , especially if economic data continues to impress .
- 6:46The strong earnings from D.R.
- 6:48Horton and PulteGroup in homebuilding are a great sign of resilience .
- 6:53You could look at individual homebuilder stocks after your own thorough research , or consider a broader real estate ETF like the Vanguard Real Estate ETF , VNQ , for diversified exposure to REITs , which often have cyclical sensitivity .
- 7:09Energy stocks are considered undervalued , and the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLE , could give you exposure to this sector , potentially hedging against inflation and geopolitical risks .
- 7:23The Communications sector , despite being a strong performer driven by Meta Platforms and Netflix , is generally seen as undervalued .
- 7:32While not specifically listed as an ETF in this context , the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLC , is generally available and could be considered to capture broader value in this space beyond just the megacaps .
- 7:47Fourth , keep a close eye on those macroeconomic shifts .
- 7:52The Fed's stance on interest rates , inflation trends , and the tariff impacts are still critical .
- 7:59Watch for the Fed's July 30th FOMC meeting .
- 8:03The expectation of potential rate cuts in September could be a tailwind for both equities and bonds .
- 8:10If you're looking to capitalize on interest rate movements , actively managed bond funds or laddered bond portfolios , perhaps using instruments like the iShares 20 Year Treasury Bond ETF , TLT , for longerduration exposure if rates are expected to fall , could be considered .
- 8:29Just remember TLT is highly sensitive to interest rate changes .
- 8:34And finally , consider international diversification .
- 8:38Given how high US stocks are valued , looking beyond our domestic borders can offer great diversification and potentially better value .
- 8:47For developed countries outside the US , the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF , VEA , is a good option .
- 8:56For higher growth potential in emerging economies , look at the Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets ETF , VWO .
- 9:05Or , for comprehensive international exposure , the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF , VXUS , covers both developed and emerging markets outside the United States .
- 9:17To sum it all up , while the US stock market is riding a wave of optimism , especially in tech , a balanced and watchful approach is key .
- 9:26Diversification , selective sector exposure , and a keen eye on those macroeconomic indicators will be your best friends for navigating what's next .
- 9:36That's all for today's Spy Trader .
- 9:38Thanks for tuning in , and happy investing !
