- 0:00Welcome back to Everyday Ancestral.
- 0:02Now before we dive in, I want you to imagine something for a moment.
- 0:05Picture yourself at the end of this episode feeling clear, grounded, and a little more awake.
- 0:10You've started noticing the words you use, the thoughts you allow in,
- 0:13and how they shape the way you show up in the world.
- 0:16Maybe you've realized that some of the stories you've been telling yourself aren't even yours.
- 0:20They were programmed in.
- 0:21By the end of this conversation, my hope is that you feel empowered to reclaim your mind,
- 0:26to think, speak, and live in a way that's aligned with who you truly are.
- 0:29Today, I am talking with Michael Bernoff, a master of human transformation, about how our modern world has rewired our minds and how to reprogram your brain to think, speak, and live more in tune with your ancestral design.
- 0:43This isn't about motivation.
- 0:45It's about remembering what it truly means to be human.
- 0:48Michael, what a pleasure.
- 0:51James, it's beyond a pleasure.
- 0:53And I will tell you that is the greatest, most real, honest introduction that I've ever received in the history of doing any interview or any podcast ever.
- 1:03So thank you for setting the frame right.
- 1:05That was beyond special and beyond accurate.
- 1:08But you also know what I was doing, which was I was practicing what you taught.
- 1:12Yes, I saw that.
- 1:13It was like Yoda and Obi-Wan.
- 1:17It was like we were doing this thing.
- 1:19You pick whichever one you want.
- 1:20And you were using how to access the unconscious mind and language patterns that induce the ability to transform and make people better.
- 1:30So let's just go right in.
- 1:31You know, you often talk about change starts with awareness.
- 1:35But how do we see that our modern environment has actually rewired our instincts?
- 1:42Well, it's really interesting.
- 1:44I would, I, one test that would tell everybody to do right off the bat is if you ever get a minute,
- 1:49grab your phone and take a pic, look at your pictures of you from 10 years ago and take a
- 1:54look at the pictures now and just ask yourself, did things seem a little bit different?
- 1:58And did
- 1:59you feel a little bit different back then?
- 2:00And most people go, I never did that before,
- 2:02especially even pre 2020, you'll look at your pictures and go, wow, that seems like a different
- 2:06person.
- 2:07And even though that it's your face, I will tell you our levels of anxiousness, our levels
- 2:15of frustration.
- 2:17And I'm just telling you, you will see 100% like, why is that guy look easy,
- 2:23go lucky nine years ago in a picture on my phone, right?
- 2:27He works for Samsung too, right?
- 2:28Even my
- 2:28phone or Samsung.
- 2:29And you're going to realize that like we live in a world right now where
- 2:32Everything's flying at us a thousand miles an hour.
- 2:35We have access to things that we never thought we'd access before.
- 2:38And the world is grabbing our attention in so many ways.
- 2:42But deeper than that, it's the language of what's going on, the way we're being trained
- 2:47to communicate with ourselves and others that is changing the way we emote and the way that
- 2:52we do things.
- 2:52So I can go, we could take this a lot of different ways.
- 2:55I'm just challenging everyone to do that test.
- 2:57Have you ever done that, James?
- 2:58Have you looked at like a 2018 picture of you and go, God, man, it was different back
- 3:01then?
- 3:03I haven't done it with that lens, but I've definitely looked back at photos and said,
- 3:07why did I, why was I so hard on myself then?
- 3:10I look really healthy and clean, you know,
- 3:12better than I felt.
- 3:13So I have done that.
- 3:14But honestly, you know, I, I was working with you
- 3:16during that time and we were all very aware of not taking on the narrative of the world and not
- 3:22letting it affect our personal narrative.
- 3:25So you actually helped me not, you know, not shift as
- 3:29much as I think the world was, to your point.
- 3:32It's fascinating.
- 3:33So I would say the biggest
- 3:34thing that we're dealing with right now is, right now, as we're doing this podcast,
- 3:38there is trillions of dollars being spent right now on doing three things that I do personally,
- 3:43teach people how to do for themselves, that you don't realize are happening to you and with you,
- 3:46is how do we get people's attention?
- 3:48This is happening in Silicon Valley right now.
- 3:50They are spending billions of dollars how to get our attention, just for little things,
- 3:53to get you to buy toothpaste, to get you to buy gum, to get you...
- 3:56This isn't some big
- 3:57conspiracy.
- 3:57We're going to get you fall off the earth.
- 3:58I'm just saying it could be the littlest
- 4:00thing in the world.
- 4:00They want your attention and they know how to do it.
- 4:02Lowering your resistance
- 4:04to their messaging and then making you receptive to what you have.
- 4:08And then you walk around saying
- 4:10things, recoding words that used to be like, I love my wife.
- 4:15I love my husband.
- 4:16I love my dog.
- 4:17I love my church.
- 4:18I love my temple too.
- 4:20I love Nestle quick.
- 4:22Does that make sense to, and, and
- 4:24They're working to hijack the chemicals in our brain to do this.
- 4:29So unless you learn how to control a lot of that yourself, you're going to, that wasn't
- 4:33in the caves back in the day.
- 4:34You weren't worried about a marketing message.
- 4:36So I'm just telling you, we have to learn how to market to ourselves as much as we're
- 4:40getting marketed to.
- 4:42It's such a great point.
- 4:43You know, if you think about it ancestrally, our brains, they were designed for community
- 4:47purpose survival, right?
- 4:48So what is the cost then?
- 4:50You know, where you're highlighting that there is a cost, but what is it?
- 4:53in living in a world that's constantly overstimulating and isolating us.
- 4:57You don't have to run from it.
- 4:58You don't have to hide from it.
- 4:59You don't have to like pretend it's
- 5:00not there and not use a phone.
- 5:01I'm not that guy.
- 5:02You know what I'm saying?
- 5:03I'm not the guy that
- 5:03says you can't go to a room that has a wifi going off.
- 5:06I mean, if you choose to do that,
- 5:07God bless you that that's, you have strengths that I I'm choosing not to have.
- 5:11Right.
- 5:12Yet, yet the cost is we've got to recognize what it is that we're doing.
- 5:17And we have to have more,
- 5:18more desire to understand what are our thoughts and what are their thoughts?
- 5:23meaning like, is that something I'm actually thinking?
- 5:25Is that something I'm actually feeling?
- 5:26Is that mine?
- 5:27Is that what I want?
- 5:28And a lot of it comes down to this very, very simple phrase,
- 5:31James, is for years I've said these words, and you may not have heard me say this.
- 5:35It's been
- 5:35the last couple of years I say this at a few events.
- 5:37And I said, very, very simply, the way
- 5:39that we talk to ourselves about ourselves is how we respond to ourselves.
- 5:44And I'll repeat that
- 5:44again.
- 5:44The way that I talk to me about me is how I respond to me and the way that I see me and the
- 5:51is the way I'm going to respond to me.
- 5:52And the way I respond to me is how you're going to respond to
- 5:54me.
- 5:54So we are training people in our lives to validate whatever feelings we have that are real
- 6:00or manufactured.
- 6:01So if I'm going to talk to myself in a way that I'm anxious based on something that
- 6:04happened here, I'm going to tell myself that I'll respond to me as an anxious person that I will
- 6:08train you to remind me that I'm an anxious person.
- 6:11Now my community is being used to validate
- 6:14something created by whether it's tech or some random thought that I got from a neighbor.
- 6:18So
- 6:19the the connection of this is a lot to do with how we communicate with ourselves and
- 6:25everything comes down to language and to words
- 6:30amen um a very smart person was talking to me and made a connection to
- 6:39the 1984 george orwell book in in that book you know orwell warns that when words lose meaning
- 6:47people lose the ability to think clearly.
- 6:51Are we seeing that play out today?
- 6:53A little bit.
- 6:55I actually, a lot of bit, I would say that words are being interchanged and we're
- 6:59making up words.
- 7:00We're doing things.
- 7:01There is, it's just interesting where your belief systems
- 7:05are.
- 7:05Like, I will tell you that I was listening to this thing recently and put this, whatever,
- 7:10wherever you want to put it in your brain.
- 7:11They said like, I curse from time to time.
- 7:13I'm from
- 7:13New Jersey.
- 7:14I curse.
- 7:15I'm not against it.
- 7:15A lot of my kids curse.
- 7:16You can't say the C word in my
- 7:17house.
- 7:18You can't say complacent.
- 7:19And I make that joke with that because I don't want anyone to be
- 7:22complacent.
- 7:23But I would say some of the biggest words people have, they say don't mean anything.
- 7:26And I'm going to start with the doesn't mean anything is things like it doesn't matter.
- 7:30Things like what's the big deal?
- 7:32That has become socially acceptable.
- 7:34Someone says,
- 7:34what does it matter?
- 7:35What's the big deal?
- 7:36Well, it really does matter, actually.
- 7:37And it is a big
- 7:38deal.
- 7:38Now, certain things, and especially if you say to someone like, well, you know, I'm having a
- 7:43hard time at school.
- 7:43Oh, don't worry about that.
- 7:44Well, we do.
- 7:45I got to worry.
- 7:46We don't have to
- 7:46worry about it, but what's the big deal.
- 7:48It doesn't matter.
- 7:49What's the point.
- 7:50These slangs
- 7:51that have gone into society have weakened us as people.
- 7:54So we don't progress and grow.
- 7:55So that's
- 7:56one side, the words that are being perpetually pushed into society.
- 8:00The other thing is where,
- 8:01where meaning goes, the meaning of love and health and different things are getting extracted.
- 8:07So
- 8:08you could go to the health food aisle at most grocery stores.
- 8:11It's the shit aisle.
- 8:12Do you know
- 8:12what I'm saying?
- 8:13Especially in most places, like you would go to the natural health, like where
- 8:17I'm from, natural meant natural soil, no GMO.
- 8:21There wasn't even a GMO back in the day.
- 8:23I'm from
- 8:24New Jersey.
- 8:24There was a farm in Pennsylvania.
- 8:25And most people don't realize Jersey's the garden
- 8:27state.
- 8:27We have farms, right?
- 8:29And we would go get beautiful fruit, beautiful vegetables that did not
- 8:33look genetically modified, right?
- 8:35And we'd get them and that was natural.
- 8:37Now the word natural
- 8:38has been hijacked and people like, well, what's the big deal?
- 8:41It's natural.
- 8:42Well, so is poison
- 8:42ivy.
- 8:43You know, it doesn't mean you're going to smoke it.
- 8:44Right.
- 8:45So, so the reason is words are
- 8:47being hijacked and used.
- 8:49Like, do you know, often people say, James, I love Netflix.
- 8:53Last time I
- 8:53checked that's for your wife.
- 8:55I love, or your children.
- 8:56It's not for some, a $9 episode in a
- 8:58show, but they want you to say that.
- 9:01So they get your 12 bucks a month.
- 9:03I, you know, I, you, I
- 9:05I remember when we had this conversation in one of the sessions a few years ago.
- 9:10And since then, I've really been bringing that to the table of like, you know, we talk about I love to eat this, you know, and in a sense, how I would explain it was I would say, well, when we use that language that we would normally use for, like you said, our wife or someone we love, literally, that we're putting so much emphasis on that thing.
- 9:30And then in a sense, that thing may have control over us.
- 9:33Is that like when you say we should be conscious and aware of using the word love, what is it you mean by that?
- 9:43Well, what I mean by that is make certain you really mean what you say and say what you mean and mean what you say.
- 9:48So like I do a lot of language correction and I'm not annoying.
- 9:51I'm very, I'm a stickler on language.
- 9:53I mean, language is everything.
- 9:54I mean, people like, oh, AI, AI, like, listen, I got something more powerful than AI.
- 9:58It's called words, right?
- 9:59There's not, AI is words, right?
- 10:01So when you say to yourself something like this, James, like let's play a little game here real quick.
- 10:06So let's just say for an example, has anyone ever told you something was hard to do?
- 10:13Like give me an example.
- 10:14Like in your world, you train, you coach, you help, you run a company, you do great things, you lead people, you parent people.
- 10:23Who has told you something was hard?
- 10:25Oh, well, you hear it all the time around diet.
- 10:28you know like it's so hard not to drink that wine every night or it's so hard not to you know
- 10:35great i love it i love it i love it like hard it's hard and you hear people say that right
- 10:39and i'm taking that as an example it's hard to drink hard to not drink wine
- 10:44what we do as people we will typically say to people you know what you're right
- 10:47and then we reinforce that it's hard the word hard is designed to avoid i'm just going to tell
- 10:52you it's not designed to make you want to do it we're not all david goggins right even david
- 10:56Goggins doesn't want to do hard things.
- 10:58What we have to learn as people, I learned this a long
- 11:00time ago, the way language works, the difference between nouns and verbs is not a grammatical
- 11:04thing.
- 11:04It's where our mind goes.
- 11:05So when somebody tells me it's hard to drink wine, I would hard to
- 11:09not drink wine.
- 11:09I would say, actually, it's not.
- 11:10That'll piss them off for a minute.
- 11:12I will take
- 11:12them from a strong belief to angry because a strong belief to angry is a change in emotion.
- 11:17And right in the middle, I'd say, actually, it's not.
- 11:20It's harder than you'd like it to be.
- 11:23so when you add the er in harder than you'd like it to be so you know i never thought of it that
- 11:28way harder than i'd like it to be as solvable hard as impossible so i always am working to
- 11:34change language and how i label things because i look at the mind as a a filing cabinet this stuff
- 11:39is hard this stuff is harder than i'd like it to be which do you think you'd pick up in the morning
- 11:44if like you were like super motivated to get thing done today would you look for something that's
- 11:48harder than you'd like it to be or something that's super hard?
- 11:52Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:54Something that's harder than you like it to be.
- 11:56Yeah.
- 11:56So we've got to label things.
- 11:58And the only reason it's harder than I'd like it to be is I've
- 12:00never made it a priority up till now.
- 12:01Now I'm relabeling it.
- 12:03I've never actually made it a
- 12:04priority to quit drinking.
- 12:05I never made it a priority to cut back on wine.
- 12:07You know what?
- 12:07You're right.
- 12:08And what's amazing is it's not about being right.
- 12:10It's about the reprioritization of
- 12:13the words that we use.
- 12:14And it's not complicated.
- 12:15It's really taking a second and really caring
- 12:18about our language and respecting our language because that changes our reality and i think of
- 12:23it this way uh you ever seen that movie or even you know liam neeson and taken you know the movie
- 12:28yeah he's got that one line he's like i've got a unique set of skills you know what i'm saying
- 12:32when i find you i will kill you well let's just rearrange that script if you would have said hey
- 12:36i know things that you don't know and if i find you it'll be bad i don't think it's the same guy
- 12:40is it when you say it with that tone that way it is now scary and the other way is well whatever
- 12:47putz right so most of us have to decide how do we want to be seen by ourselves so i went on a
- 12:52tangent but back to you james i love it though but actually i love that you're bringing up a movie
- 12:57because uh you've said before that the brain doesn't know the difference between what's real
- 13:02and what's imagined that what we see hear and even think becomes our programming so in a world
- 13:08saturated with violence, movies, social media outrage, fear-based news.
- 13:15How do we protect our
- 13:16minds from absorbing that energy without completely disconnecting from reality?
- 13:22Yeah.
- 13:22First thing is you don't have to watch that stuff.
- 13:24That'll be up to you.
- 13:25If you've got the
- 13:25courage to do that.
- 13:26I went for years, like when I got into direct sales at a young age, the first
- 13:29thing they told us to do was like, turn off the TV, turn off the media.
- 13:32Like there was nothing.
- 13:33And maybe I watched the history channel back in the day.
- 13:36And still somebody woke me up and told
- 13:37me about September 11th.
- 13:38So, so people are going to tell you, so if you've got the ability to like
- 13:40avoid completely, um, you can, it's probably going to be a challenge.
- 13:47And number one is we need to
- 13:49walk into what we're going to do as we're going to do it.
- 13:51So let's just say you're going to be
- 13:52watching something you could flip on.
- 13:54You know what I'm going to do right now?
- 13:55I am going to
- 13:56spend a few minutes, um, taking a watch at this and you can decide like how you're going to position
- 14:02that to yourself.
- 14:03But my, my take is I think it's the best way I would put this is if we were to put
- 14:07this in a very, very simple category, and we were to put this in a, in a concept of like, I want to
- 14:12be able to live in a world, still be able to watch this thing and not get bothered by it.
- 14:15You have to
- 14:15realize it's, it's all a game.
- 14:17And the game is what are you going to allow into your mind?
- 14:21And
- 14:22what are you going to allow to be them and you?
- 14:23And the interesting thing is that's one of the
- 14:26things we need to recognize is the difference between you and them.
- 14:28They are not the same
- 14:29thing.
- 14:29So as you hear the words, they are designed to get into your mind and have no separation.
- 14:35Give me an example of a modality that you're talking about.
- 14:38Are we talking about social media?
- 14:40Are we talking about the media, the news?
- 14:41Let's pick one so I can explain a little better.
- 14:43Well, let's pick the movies because I remember that stood out a lot to me when you talked about that.
- 14:49Just how literally you could be watching a horror movie or a suspense thriller and your brain doesn't know the difference that it's a movie.
- 15:00and so you leave with having been impacted in the same way that the characters in the movie
- 15:05potentially have been impacted right well let's get really real real um they really stopped making
- 15:10movies let's just get clear they don't make movies anymore have you noticed james like there's no
- 15:13like when's the last time you've been to the movie theater oh yeah i mean no i i go i go probably
- 15:19like probably two months ago or something like that but i but i think i know where you're going
- 15:23like that it's it's not really story based anymore it's just it's it's just action this action that
- 15:28Well, no, what I'm saying is they really just stopped making movies.
- 15:32There are a lot of shows now.
- 15:33Oh, yeah.
- 15:33And the reason they use shows and not movies is shows have a bigger impact and you can get monthly bills on it.
- 15:40So they've learned how the psychological connection between a movie, which is three hours, then you go about your life and then it disappears, and a show are very different.
- 15:48So years ago, before I go to bed, and one thing I'm just going to recommend to all of you is before you go to bed, I'm going to recommend everybody put this thing in airplane mode before you go to sleep.
- 15:58if you've got children or grandparents or people you need to take care of, put it far away from
- 16:03you and leave it on.
- 16:03But I put everything in airplane mode before I go to bed.
- 16:05That's one
- 16:06thing I was going to say.
- 16:07And I put it away from me.
- 16:08I'm just going to tell you at a minimum,
- 16:09do that or turn it off.
- 16:10That would just say that's one thing.
- 16:11The other thing I was going to say is
- 16:13I woke up in the middle of the night.
- 16:15I was watching, this was probably 2008 or nine when
- 16:18Sons of Anarchy was so big.
- 16:19And I loved that show.
- 16:20It was after Sopranos ended and I really
- 16:21loved Sons of Anarchy.
- 16:22And when I used to watch Sopranos, which I love, it reminds me of growing
- 16:25up in New Jersey.
- 16:26It was a great show.
- 16:27It's a great business show because you learn about life
- 16:29and there was connection and character development and all that stuff.
- 16:32It used to be on once a week.
- 16:33So once a week I would watch the show.
- 16:35I would take on the feeling.
- 16:36It would come and go.
- 16:37These shows wound up being something that you could watch and you could binge on.
- 16:41So then I
- 16:42would, when Sons of Anarchy came on, which was a show about a violent biker gang, it was before I
- 16:46knew what I knew now.
- 16:47And I would turn it on and I watched two, three episodes before bed and I
- 16:50would get not an hour.
- 16:52I would get 90 minutes, two, three hours of this in my mind, way past the time
- 16:57where my mind is needing to slow down and about to go into my sleep stage.
- 17:01So I'm stealing some
- 17:01of the powerful energy I have because anything you watch or listen before you go to bed lives
- 17:05in your mind while you're sleeping.
- 17:07This is very important to understand.
- 17:08So I'm gonna say a lot
- 17:09of things very, very quickly.
- 17:10I want you to pay attention.
- 17:11It's all based on neuroscience.
- 17:12So
- 17:13what happens is I would go to bed and I'd wake up in the middle of the night and I'm like, I would
- 17:18grabbed my phone again.
- 17:19And I want to know because there's characters in that show that are,
- 17:22that are strategically and psychologically designed to align with my current thinking patterns.
- 17:27There's somebody in every show from back in Winnie the Pooh.
- 17:29There's the depressed person.
- 17:30There's the happy person.
- 17:31There's the violent person.
- 17:32There's a sexy person.
- 17:33There's the cool
- 17:33kid.
- 17:33There's the geek.
- 17:35All of these were designed to connect with your identity.
- 17:37So you go, man,
- 17:38I like that character.
- 17:39I like that character.
- 17:40So I found myself waking up in the night
- 17:43concerned, like what's happening with Bill?
- 17:45What's happening with Jax on the show?
- 17:46What's
- 17:47happening with this person and I got to turn it back on because I need to know they pulled it in
- 17:51and I started to have this like film like what was the difference between their reality and mine
- 17:56that's how they suck us in to pay attention so a really big psychological desire is do you want to
- 18:03have a life that they're designing for you at your expense of twelve dollars a month and all of your
- 18:08sanity or would you like to live out your own movie of what you want to do and I know we're
- 18:12smart enough to go yeah it's what I want to do so we've got another cost and it doesn't mean you've
- 18:16got to give up your life but you have to realize that there is a psyop going on at all given times
- 18:21these shows are designed to have character development certain music certain things i mean
- 18:27listen james you and i are from the same generation i think i'm a little bit older
- 18:31but uh but in the 80s all of those horror movies there was a sex scene always before the murder
- 18:38because if i can get you to go like that like like high school like we're young watching the
- 18:44Friday the 13th and then there's like they're about to make love right and then the killer comes
- 18:49look at the shock how much more shocked are you when you were just in romance mode so it's like
- 18:54do to do it's a formula to scare the hell out of you so they know what they're doing and what it
- 18:59does it takes us out of our own game I feel like we're seeing this play out with the easily easy
- 19:07access to porn with the younger you know boys right the oxytocin that comes from and the girls
- 19:12now.
- 19:13Right.
- 19:15It's a bit scary to me.
- 19:16I mean, you have two girls.
- 19:19How are you preparing them for
- 19:21this world?
- 19:23This very different world from what you and I grew up with, or at least it seems like
- 19:27it's different.
- 19:28It's similar and different.
- 19:29Instead of finding grandpa's VHS tape or dad's
- 19:33VHS tape and being able to watch it when you want, the difference is once in a while and all the time.
- 19:38And that's a big issue.
- 19:40Like when we were kids, I remember going to Chili's and I would go like, that would be
- 19:44a big night out.
- 19:44I mean, that was a, that was a night out.
- 19:46Curly fries, baby.
- 19:47Curly fries.
- 19:47And then we'd get a little ice cream.
- 19:49That was every once in a while.
- 19:49Now it's like DoorDash something.
- 19:51I would never eat that shit, but you know what I'm saying?
- 19:53It was like DoorDash all the time.
- 19:55You can get it.
- 19:56So preparing for the world, Tara's 24 and Maya's 13.
- 20:01Maya doesn't have a phone.
- 20:03Um, what's funny is she actually doesn't, doesn't want one.
- 20:05I don't know if we've scared her, but, but she, she doesn't want one.
- 20:09We were even considering getting one.
- 20:11Do you know what I'm saying?
- 20:12Cause she's going to be in high school next year and she doesn't have one.
- 20:16And she sees the way the kids are like mindless walking around and it doesn't make it easy
- 20:20to like the friendly thing.
- 20:22It's not as easy to connect because they do connect and talk about it.
- 20:25She knows enough.
- 20:26She's got an iPad and a watch and all that stuff, but she doesn't really want one.
- 20:29So we do our best to explain, like, that's not how our decisions are made.
- 20:35like watching that stuff just because kim kardashian has that or just because that
- 20:39uh they said it's a good idea really having your own thoughts we've done our best with them i mean
- 20:46tears past that phase she grew up in the height of it and she would tell you point blank it's
- 20:50dangerous you know what i'm saying she grew up in the height of it especially being a girl
- 20:54so there's the adult explicit stuff and then there is somewhat as dangerous is people thinking for
- 21:02you when you thinking their life is better.
- 21:04And very few people really understand like what goes
- 21:07on afterwards.
- 21:07Like you can't smell what's, what's in there.
- 21:10You can't see anything other than the
- 21:12frame that they're showing you.
- 21:14So really educating our kids, the difference between reality and thus,
- 21:18and, but we've got one rule in our house.
- 21:19Like you, you do a sport and I am telling you, if you're,
- 21:22you doing a sport, you are secreting dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and oxytocin every
- 21:27single day even in a solo sport like maya does of figure skating she's using all four of those at
- 21:32any given day so instead of giving those four chemicals to your screen we do that so you do
- 21:37a sport in our house and the best we can do i don't think we should hide our children from it
- 21:43i just definitely need it needs to be a conversation because the greatest trick the
- 21:48devil ever pulled is convincing the world that he doesn't exist and i'm not saying the phone is the
- 21:52devil, but it is an access point for that type of thinking.
- 21:57Yeah, that's a really good point.
- 21:59Do you think mental pollution has the same effect as physical toxins like, you know,
- 22:04microplastic or processed foods just on a psychological level?
- 22:09I would say worse.
- 22:10And
- 22:10the reason worse is you don't see it coming.
- 22:12You don't know.
- 22:12It's like two alcoholics living in a
- 22:13house.
- 22:14If mom's an alcoholic and dad is, child doesn't realize the difference and neither of
- 22:17think anyone's drunk because they're all drinking together.
- 22:20So I think the slow erosion of our
- 22:24psychology through the social pollution and the thinking, and then it doesn't matter.
- 22:29I mean,
- 22:30I'll prove it to you.
- 22:31Just go to a soup kitchen, go to a soup kitchen for three hours, go or some
- 22:36really well-organized help other people with no phone and leave it in your car.
- 22:41And you just tell
- 22:41me how you feel.
- 22:42Go for a bike ride for an hour.
- 22:44I don't mean, no, no, I don't mean a workout.
- 22:46I
- 22:46mean not a 10 speed i'm talking a beach cruiser cruiser yeah go get on that thing and go through
- 22:52on a nice day without a bunch of honking horns go out and do it go in your backyard like my and i
- 22:58the other day we went in the backyard and we just signed the hot tub for a little bit it's nice out
- 23:02in arizona here and then we colored in the backyard and and it sounds weird like a kid
- 23:07like the freeness of it is absolutely amazing so i challenge anyone to know why do you enjoy that
- 23:14stuff so much and then call it for what it is.
- 23:17I mean, I would say if I'm teaching somebody,
- 23:20if they're going to go to happy hour tonight, I would say the best thing you should say to
- 23:23yourself is it's not a negative.
- 23:24You know what I'm going to do?
- 23:25I'm going to put some stuff in
- 23:25my body that it really isn't good for me.
- 23:27I'm going to feel worse tomorrow, but I'm choosing
- 23:30to do this.
- 23:30And you're better off saying that you'll probably eat less and drink less.
- 23:32If you
- 23:33say it versus, Oh my God, I love this.
- 23:35Same as picking up one of these.
- 23:36You know what I'm going
- 23:36to do?
- 23:36I'm going to waste about three hours of my life right now.
- 23:38And I'm going to watch the show.
- 23:40Just say it.
- 23:41Just freaking say it to yourself.
- 23:42You'd be amazed how you don't enjoy the show as
- 23:44much.
- 23:45It's interesting because you're almost saying like by reclaiming language that helps
- 23:49us reclaim our humanity.
- 23:51Our language is shaped by our humanity.
- 23:53I mean, if you go back again,
- 23:54I've studied a lot of religious texts.
- 23:56And again, I don't want to get into that part.
- 23:57Actually,
- 23:58I don't care about getting into it.
- 23:58I'll get into it.
- 23:59I don't care if you study Buddha, Allah,
- 24:01Jesus, Hashem, whatever it is, I will tell you point blank, the word is the way.
- 24:05And the word
- 24:06is everything is the word.
- 24:07Because the first thing we had as human beings that brought connection
- 24:11that really brought humans is the word.
- 24:12And there's never been any act in this world
- 24:15that has never been produced without a word.
- 24:17If you want to go shoot somebody,
- 24:18you have to say certain things to yourself
- 24:20or even tell yourself you'll pick up that gun.
- 24:21If you want to make a baby,
- 24:22it's either going to be,
- 24:23hey, you want to, or tequila.
- 24:25I mean, it's going to be,
- 24:26words are going to happen.
- 24:28So words are the predecessor to everything.
- 24:30And very few people would actually look at words.
- 24:32When we clean up our words,
- 24:34that's when we become superhumans.
- 24:35That's when we become powerful
- 24:37because what most people don't realize about Navy SEALs,
- 24:39they're a master of their language.
- 24:41If you watch them negotiate, what was that movie years ago?
- 24:44I think it was Tom Hanks where there's the oil freighter they stole.
- 24:49Do you remember this?
- 24:50And
- 24:50he was a captain.
- 24:51Did you see this one?
- 24:52And the Navy SEALs had to come out and they were so precise.
- 24:55They were like, hey, terrorist, this is the Navy SEALs of the US Department of this.
- 25:00You will stand
- 25:01exactly where you are.
- 25:02You will not move one inch.
- 25:04And they use their language so precisely.
- 25:06It was
- 25:07scary language.
- 25:08Okay.
- 25:09So when you learn a really good police officer is really great at language.
- 25:12That's how they get you out of the car.
- 25:14They get a DUI out of you and they just talk.
- 25:16I wonder why
- 25:17I was taking the breathalyzer, man.
- 25:18They're good at language, right?
- 25:20So, so as a marketing company
- 25:22and so is a powerful person.
- 25:24And so is unfortunately a really bad, bad man or bad woman is really good
- 25:28with language to lower your resistance.
- 25:30So we need to increase our resistance and lower it to other
- 25:34things.
- 25:34So our ancestors, they learn by watching and doing not by scrolling and consuming to your
- 25:40point of what we've been talking about today.
- 25:42So how, how do we recreate that kind of learning
- 25:45and community today?
- 25:46You, you mentioned, you know, putting the phone down, leaving in your car,
- 25:49going to a soup kitchen, but are there, are there ways that maybe the listener or someone watching
- 25:53this video can just immediately apply right after this?
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:58So I, one of the things that, again,
- 25:59I've studied a lot of texts and I've learned a few things like any group of people that has
- 26:04very, um, this is very simple, very, very powerful.
- 26:07Like just go to your homework on this.
- 26:09Any group that has any restriction at all, meaning the dietary restriction or, um, or some sort of
- 26:17like emotional restriction from basic human desires are typically the most successful financial and
- 26:25socially in the world.
- 26:27Just go look at the groups of people that restrict certain diet things.
- 26:30and you look at that class of people, how well they do financially, and you will be amazed the
- 26:34direct connection.
- 26:36You'll also realize how much they, how connected they are to family.
- 26:39I'm not
- 26:39saying they're perfect.
- 26:40I just want to tell you.
- 26:41So one of the things we say in our household is
- 26:43other people don't do that, but this is something that we do.
- 26:46And the reason is you should have one
- 26:48thing.
- 26:48Like in our house, we eat greens and vegetables.
- 26:50And then some people don't do that.
- 26:51We eat greens and vegetables.
- 26:52It is important to us at each meal.
- 26:53You can eat what you want.
- 26:54We do
- 26:54that.
- 26:55This is one of the things we do in our house, in our house, we exercise.
- 26:58So we have to
- 26:59make declarations of things that we do in our house.
- 27:03Social media is not a dominant force and
- 27:05we've got to make a declaration.
- 27:06It's something we might do, but it's not a force in our house.
- 27:09We do not watch the media.
- 27:11We create an us versus them type scenario.
- 27:14It's not a battle in our house.
- 27:17We do not allow, um, we do not allow the news.
- 27:19It's just something we don't do.
- 27:20Do you know what
- 27:21I'm saying?
- 27:22And when people make those declarations, I mean, this has been going on since the beginning
- 27:25of time, whether it's restricting certain meats or restricting alcohol.
- 27:28I mean, look at, look at
- 27:29even just a group like i mean the amish they're very good business people i don't know if you
- 27:32know that they have a lot of restrictions they do they're very like people can tease them i bought
- 27:36my dog before christmas for maya and from a nice man from from lancaster pennsylvania i thought i
- 27:42felt bad for him and then he called me a couple weeks later because don't tell the elders that
- 27:46i'm calling but i bought a nine hundred thousand dollar piece of machinery you seem like a smart
- 27:50businessman michael will you help me and i'm like dude these guys are good do you know what i'm
- 27:53saying but they have restrictions and things so i believe we don't have to restrict everything but
- 27:59we do need to decide what our limitations are, what we're going to allow.
- 28:02Because in the old days, you couldn't like, how often, James, when we were kids, could
- 28:07you watch The Wizard of Oz when we were little, when we were eight?
- 28:11Really never.
- 28:12I mean, when was it on?
- 28:15Like TNT or whatever would have that run sometimes, right?
- 28:18During the holiday.
- 28:19It was on once a year.
- 28:20Yeah, once a year.
- 28:21There was no TNT.
- 28:21When you were eight years old, there was no TNT, was there?
- 28:23That's true.
- 28:24It was, yeah, it was the other one, right?
- 28:27yes, when we were younger, but then at one point it was that, I'm forgetting the name of it,
- 28:31the Turner Network.
- 28:32Yeah, it was Turner Network, but I'm saying that wasn't until like we were
- 28:34like teenagers, right?
- 28:35Yeah, you're right.
- 28:36You're right.
- 28:36So you couldn't, you couldn't really watch
- 28:38that once a year.
- 28:39Yeah.
- 28:39So there was already built in limitations based on limitation because
- 28:43everything comes out now, we need to choose what we're going to allow.
- 28:47So the thing is you can
- 28:48watch it, but you've got to accept your choices that you're making.
- 28:51So I don't know if I'm giving
- 28:52exact answers, but I am telling you from a language standpoint, we need to decide what level
- 28:58of limitation we're going to put on the things we do, because who are you going to let have your
- 29:01power?
- 29:02And our drug chemistry set is for sale every day of the week to again, Silicon Valley and
- 29:08Madison Avenue every single day of the week, they're looking for it.
- 29:11So in a cave, you had
- 29:13to create your own, you had to create your own excitement.
- 29:17You had to create your own joy.
- 29:18And
- 29:18part of it is tapping to remind.
- 29:20And one of the addictions that I've learned is before I go to
- 29:22bed, I use a book and a yellow light.
- 29:27And the reason I use a yellow, I was with Cameron Harold
- 29:29the other day.
- 29:30Do you know Cameron?
- 29:31No.
- 29:31Cameron, he was a super sharp guy.
- 29:33We're at his dinner
- 29:34for his birthday.
- 29:34He just turned 60.
- 29:36And I go, dude, he goes, I can't get off my Kindle at night.
- 29:38I said, you need to.
- 29:39I said, get a physical book, which is like tactile.
- 29:41This is like one of my
- 29:42favorite books as a man think of.
- 29:44And I will read a book like this with a yellow book light at night
- 29:49physically touching, I'll fall asleep in 15 minutes.
- 29:51I break this thing out, I'll be up for
- 29:53three hours.
- 29:54So whatever you read or listen to before you go to bed will live in your mind while
- 29:58you're sleeping and it'll become part of your reality.
- 30:01I love that you brought up boundaries
- 30:02though, because I, I, I identify that that's a lot of why kids sometimes are ruling the household.
- 30:10You know, that, that we are, we are technically coming from a generation where, and maybe it's
- 30:16people that are a little younger than us, I don't know, but, but we're coming from generations where
- 30:20there was such trauma that a lot of these young parents just, they, they, it's almost like they
- 30:26can't even make the decision to just make a decision.
- 30:30Right.
- 30:31And, and so you're seeing these,
- 30:32these kids that are running the household, they're always on their phones and all that stuff.
- 30:37So
- 30:38is there, I know you, you know, trauma is something you actually inadvertently help
- 30:43people with at your conferences.
- 30:44So is there, can we kind of touch on that of like, how can the
- 30:48person at home who maybe doesn't even know what their trauma is, but just notices that they're
- 30:52struggling to make these boundaries and they're for themselves and within their home, like how can
- 30:58you support them in overcoming that?
- 31:00Well, the first thing I would say is if you're a parent
- 31:02out there and you're listening to this, I mean, one of the things we said as kids, we don't realize
- 31:05how detrimental this language is.
- 31:06We'd say, well, I'm a parent.
- 31:07I'm going to be different.
- 31:09There's a reason our parents did the things they did.
- 31:11I'm not, and listen,
- 31:12and I am posting so much content on my Instagram right now.
- 31:15We got like 7.5 million views on one video recently
- 31:18that's up there twice on parent and a child relationship.
- 31:22And I'm getting comments like therapy from parents.
- 31:25Like they're asking me questions and it's fascinating.
- 31:27So check this stuff out when you get admitted.
- 31:30I would definitely tell you, find me.
- 31:32The reason I'm bringing this up is
- 31:36as parents, we make declarations when we're younger and we say, I'm going to be different
- 31:41when I get older.
- 31:42So when I say something like, maybe your parents didn't mean it.
- 31:47I'm not talking
- 31:48about if you had an abusive, emotional, psychological, sexually assaulted childhood.
- 31:53If that occurred, that is for you.
- 31:54I feel awful.
- 31:55I'm sorry.
- 31:56We'll work on that.
- 31:58We can figure that
- 31:58out.
- 31:58I'm just talking about the rules, the regulations, the things that we did, and also
- 32:02of the freedoms that our parents gave us.
- 32:04So two things are happening right now as parents.
- 32:06Number
- 32:06one is we're giving no freedom and we're giving too much freedom and it's in the wrong place.
- 32:11What I mean by that is I'm a Gen Xer.
- 32:13I came home and my parents trusted me.
- 32:15Very strict rules.
- 32:18I
- 32:19could do whatever I wanted.
- 32:20I could manipulate and lie and do everything in between my hours
- 32:23that they didn't know that I was doing as long as I was home by a certain time.
- 32:25They trusted me and
- 32:26I created my own rules and boundaries and I was able to learn for myself.
- 32:29Most parents have stripped
- 32:31their children from the ability to make decisions because we don't want them to screw up because we
- 32:35know what we did.
- 32:36We know we were out drinking.
- 32:37We know we were out partying.
- 32:38We know we were
- 32:39kissing someone underage.
- 32:40We were doing like, I got 12 or 13.
- 32:41Like we were doing shit we shouldn't
- 32:43have done.
- 32:43So we're worried our kids are going to do that.
- 32:45So that's one.
- 32:45So we build wrong
- 32:47boundaries and we don't give them any freedom.
- 32:49Okay.
- 32:49Any freedom.
- 32:49I'm telling you, I've done it.
- 32:51It's not good.
- 32:52The other thing is we don't want to be our parents.
- 32:55So we're like, oh, you know,
- 32:56we could do ice cream every day.
- 32:57What's the big deal?
- 32:58Blah, blah, blah.
- 32:59Well, that made sense
- 32:59back then because everything wasn't available at every given moment.
- 33:02And our parents would say no
- 33:03to the ice cream truck every once in a while, but it only came around once a month, right?
- 33:06Nowadays, what happens is the ice cream truck is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- 33:11So we're able to say yes to everything all the time.
- 33:13So we've got to realize their childhood
- 33:15and ours are very different.
- 33:17That's very important.
- 33:18So when you talk about the trauma aspect,
- 33:20which area of trauma are you talking about?
- 33:22So I really want to be clear what I just said a second
- 33:24ago.
- 33:25We have to add more freedoms and we have to take some freedoms away.
- 33:28And I'm telling you,
- 33:29We got to be strategic how we do that.
- 33:30We have to let them think and to be able to solve things for themselves.
- 33:33But we also have to explain to them, no, and this is how the world works.
- 33:36Like letting children have any, oh, you know, whatever food you want.
- 33:39When I was a kid, you got whatever the hell was in the table.
- 33:40So I'm like, oh, what would you want for dinner?
- 33:42Dude, that's not good.
- 33:44You can't.
- 33:45I've done that.
- 33:45I've screwed up everything.
- 33:46I'm telling you.
- 33:47Learn from me.
- 33:48If you're a young parent, your kid's under five years old, don't freaking ask them that.
- 33:51They get what they get and that's it.
- 33:52And if they don't like it, they still get what they get.
- 33:54And every once in a while, let them pick so they can learn that they can create that life.
- 33:58And James, you've screwed that one up too, right?
- 33:59Of course.
- 34:01Well, and also I noticed when my kids were younger, I would ask a question at the end.
- 34:06I'd say, is that, oh, you know, what's an example?
- 34:10Like, I'd be like, I need you to clean your room.
- 34:12Okay.
- 34:14Right.
- 34:15It was like almost like looking for their approval or something instead of saying, no,
- 34:19we're not going to do this until this is done.
- 34:21That's your own trauma, buddy.
- 34:23That's your own.
- 34:24God, I hate being told what to do.
- 34:26So because you get in hate, especially entrepreneurial parents, which by a lot of your list is, a lot of people watching this, you don't want to be told what to do.
- 34:33So you don't want your kid to feel like they're being told what to do.
- 34:34You got to tell your kid what to do.
- 34:36Do you know what I'm saying?
- 34:36So listen, you're going to clean your room, and afterwards, we're going to be able to do blank.
- 34:40Thank you, and that's it.
- 34:42So this goes to, I'll get to the trauma in a second.
- 34:45I want to put a thought out there.
- 34:46I do want to teach everyone how to build empowered children, and I have a couple things that I want to share with that that are very, very important.
- 34:52And this may be a good cut in to promote this episode.
- 34:55I'm going to tell you having empowered people in our lives is so simple to do.
- 35:00And I'm going to encourage everybody to understand what I'm going to show.
- 35:03Let's do the trauma thing first.
- 35:04And then I want to tell you how to build very, very empowered people.
- 35:07So talk to me about what you mean by trauma.
- 35:10I know the word trauma, but what you mean by our traumas, because immediately when someone
- 35:13hears it, they're like, oh, rape, abuse, uh, being left on the side of a subway and trauma
- 35:18could be as simple as neglect or manufactured trauma by us thinking our parents didn't love
- 35:23us and they were just busy.
- 35:24I think it's the latter that I'm thinking of.
- 35:26I mean, of course, it's all happening to different people,
- 35:29but I see the latter more play out where it's like my parents didn't see me.
- 35:34I didn't feel heard.
- 35:37So now I'm almost hyper aware,
- 35:39making sure that I'm acknowledging every emotion that my child has,
- 35:43and thus now they think that they matter more than the world,
- 35:47than what's going on in the world.
- 35:49It's the first thing we can do as hard as it is to do.
- 35:51We need to free our parents and free ourselves
- 35:52and basically be able to say they were doing the best they had with what they had.
- 35:55And yes, they could have possibly done better, but it already happened.
- 35:58That's the first thing we all need to do as people.
- 35:59And that is maybe not easy, but it's going to be necessary.
- 36:02And the faster you can say what I just said, the better it's going to be.
- 36:05And you can look at them and go, they didn't get a manual.
- 36:07They were working hard.
- 36:08They had their own crap to deal with that you will never know.
- 36:10And they're probably never going to tell you that they shielded you from.
- 36:13And again, I'm not talking about the worst cases.
- 36:15I'm talking about the ones that are Gen X trauma where like, you know,
- 36:18mommy and daddy were a little bit mean or something,
- 36:20or didn't let us have a car or a puppy or whatever it is.
- 36:23The second thing about it is
- 36:28we as parents have to realize our role.
- 36:30Our role is not to be friends with these humans.
- 36:33Our goal is to build incredibly empowered human beings
- 36:35to have a great quality of life.
- 36:36So if our goal is to be liked,
- 36:40you're going to be miserable for your entire life
- 36:41with every human being.
- 36:42And it comes to relationships.
- 36:44I just want to tell everyone,
- 36:45if you need to be liked,
- 36:46you just fell into Mark Zuckerberg's plan.
- 36:49You are weak.
- 36:50and you will have a pathetic life.
- 36:51And I'm just going to be very, very direct when I say this.
- 36:54And the reason they got rid of the dislike button on most of these channels is because you couldn't
- 36:58handle it.
- 36:59And I've learned that I don't need to be liked.
- 37:03I like to be likable.
- 37:04If I'm likable,
- 37:06you may or may not like me.
- 37:07That'll be your choice whether you like me or not.
- 37:09So our goal is to really not care what people think.
- 37:12If you see an 85-year-old grandma that'll
- 37:14pass gas and not care, well, I just did that, whatever.
- 37:17It's just what she was.
- 37:18Does that make
- 37:18sense.
- 37:19She'll say whatever she needs to get said.
- 37:20She'll say it in a way that may be appropriate or
- 37:22not.
- 37:22I've had a grandma say this to me, Oh, you know, forgive me.
- 37:24It just came out.
- 37:25And she's
- 37:25like, doesn't mean to make an inappropriate joke, but the point is they'll do this because they
- 37:30finally got to a point where they don't care at all.
- 37:33And if you care so much that you don't care,
- 37:35you have freedom.
- 37:35I'm not saying being rude to people.
- 37:37I'm not saying be, be obnoxious.
- 37:39You need
- 37:39to be kind and as loving as possible to people, but how we are controlled as a society is through
- 37:45what I'm going to share in a bit about the empowerment is this desire to be liked and the
- 37:49desire to fit in.
- 37:51And that is what the culture is created.
- 37:53So if you need to be liked or you need to
- 37:54be fit in, you are easily to be controlled.
- 37:57And the people that cannot be controlled by media,
- 38:00people, friend groups, and everything is you just don't need to be liked.
- 38:04Maya is a very high
- 38:05performance figure skater, one of the, one of the best in the country.
- 38:08And, and you don't make
- 38:10friends by being good.
- 38:11I'm just going to tell you, you don't make friends.
- 38:13You decide you're not
- 38:14going to be on social media.
- 38:16You decide you're going to get a 12 pack abs.
- 38:17You decide, I know
- 38:18this to you and your wife, you decide you're going to eat well.
- 38:21You decide you're going to get into
- 38:22NAD and you're going to take IV and do ozone and all that stuff.
- 38:26You don't get liked by the general
- 38:28public.
- 38:28You get blasted.
- 38:30Okay.
- 38:30So I'm just going to tell you being great.
- 38:33If you choose to do it,
- 38:34the punishment you will get is being liked doesn't go.
- 38:37They don't, they don't live in the same box.
- 38:38So I'm just going to tell you, we've got to prepare our children for that.
- 38:41So
- 38:42we need to not build a world of people that need to be liked because that is how we are being
- 38:46manipulated.
- 38:46And that is how blackmail is done because the men and women who don't care, you
- 38:51just think of the five or six most powerful people in the world.
- 38:53I'm not going to get into politics
- 38:54right now.
- 38:55They don't care what anybody thinks on both sides, on both sides, on any country,
- 39:01they don't care at all.
- 39:03And it's not that they're just a narcissist.
- 39:05They don't care.
- 39:06And what's funny is then you have power.
- 39:07And I'm going to tell you, we need to raise our
- 39:10children to care so much they don't care at all but love people and be kind i could teach the
- 39:17empowerment thing in a bit but that that was yeah no that that's you know you you have a unique
- 39:22perspective uh that i i love for you to impart to people that might be in this situation so you
- 39:29came into a marriage where where your wife already had a child yep how many people come into that
- 39:37And I think a lot of times they don't know how to connect, how to be, who, who, how to show up.
- 39:43So how did you show up?
- 39:45Well, first thing is don't do this.
- 39:46Don't take the little one to the store and give her a ginseng water with a bunch of stuff and give them a bunch of energy.
- 39:53Cause I messed up real bad.
- 39:54I give a little seven-year-old, I'm just joking around, but we joked about that the other day.
- 39:58Um, I was learning cause I was having fun.
- 40:00I forgot she was seven years old.
- 40:01You gave her a jolt or something?
- 40:02No, not a jolt.
- 40:03Like there was like this health food store, like add ginseng, add that.
- 40:06And I brought her back and never said, okay, you know, done to that again.
- 40:09I make that joke.
- 40:10Um, it's wonderful when it's wonderful, but it's gotta be set up correctly.
- 40:14So, uh, Tara is absolutely amazing.
- 40:16I, we're like buddies.
- 40:17It is super, super incredible.
- 40:20She's 24 works with a Nat was now as incredible, incredible boyfriend.
- 40:24They're like peas in a pod.
- 40:26They're, they're great together.
- 40:28They're going to be amazing.
- 40:29and so it isn't an easy thing but it's also not complicated it's how it's brought in so like
- 40:35deborah did everything really correctly at first i was hey michael's gonna come over to the lemonade
- 40:40stand he's gonna bring over his dog and it was like i was a guy that was a friend and they came
- 40:44over and we introduced we did everything correctly i didn't i didn't spend the night i didn't do any
- 40:47of that stuff you know i'm saying i literally i just didn't you know i'm saying and i we built
- 40:51it in and we built her into our lives like we never i never treated her any different than i
- 40:55what is my own child?
- 40:56I didn't know how to do that or not.
- 40:58Like, I just never, I just assumed that
- 41:00she's like, she's my child now, you know, I'm going to, I'm going to take care of her.
- 41:04And
- 41:05it's a very important thing is to get on the same page.
- 41:07So expectations minus reality will equal
- 41:10disappointment every single time.
- 41:11So Debra and I had expectations.
- 41:13Uh, she had an expectation of,
- 41:15um, if I'm going to bring you into my life, um, this is now we're going to help raise this child.
- 41:22Do you know what I'm saying?
- 41:23And that's what we, we did.
- 41:25So it turned out, it's turning out
- 41:27incredibly well.
- 41:28Like we are super close.
- 41:29And one of Debra's beliefs is she wanted to have a
- 41:31different relationship that she had with her mom.
- 41:32She wanted to be close.
- 41:33Our kids like hanging out
- 41:34with us.
- 41:35Like we're with each other all the time.
- 41:36Like we, we really enjoy each other and we decided
- 41:39to make that work.
- 41:40So I don't know if that answers your question and I'd like to go deeper on that
- 41:43if you need, but I wanted to teach her some of the things we knew.
- 41:47So I based this on, I wanted to
- 41:50help build a very strong kid.
- 41:52So I, I'll just dump into the thing that I was going to say earlier
- 41:56about empowerment and I'll just help with this right now is I wanted my kids to feel great about
- 42:01themselves.
- 42:02So a lot of parents walk around the world telling their kids, like they can be better.
- 42:07You can do better.
- 42:08And I believe in you and you're great.
- 42:09And we don't realize that we're messing
- 42:10our children up because anytime you tell somebody, not only they can do better, I know something you
- 42:16don't know.
- 42:16It's our form of dominating and feeling important.
- 42:19And so what I learned is a very simple
- 42:21phrase that I would say is, Hey, listen, if you ever want to get better at cheerleading, let me
- 42:26know.
- 42:26I might have a couple answers.
- 42:27And then I let them come to me.
- 42:29And the reason I do that is
- 42:30when you let them come to you and you can have the courage, mom and dad to like, to let them not come
- 42:35to you.
- 42:35Like if they don't come to you, they don't want it.
- 42:37Maybe throw it out there again.
- 42:38They're
- 42:38not you.
- 42:39They're them.
- 42:41But when you throw them, they come to you and they're like, yeah, you know,
- 42:42I really want to get better.
- 42:43Now they're coming from serotonin.
- 42:44They're excited.
- 42:46And I never tell
- 42:47my kids I'm proud of them.
- 42:49I tell them when they do something great, they should be proud of
- 42:51themselves.
- 42:52And the reason is I let them have all the power.
- 42:54So my, my, my kids walk around going,
- 42:57I'm really proud of my work.
- 42:58I'm proud.
- 42:58I let them keep the pride.
- 42:59I don't want to be proud of them
- 43:00because if I'm proud of them, they need me.
- 43:03I need to train them to leave and move on their own.
- 43:06If
- 43:06not, I'll be broke my whole life.
- 43:07Right?
- 43:07So I need them to go do their own thing.
- 43:09So my kids walk
- 43:10around saying they're proud of themselves.
- 43:11So when they say like, James, they'll be like, Hey,
- 43:14I just threw a double axel today.
- 43:16I don't say good job.
- 43:17I say, of course you did.
- 43:18That's what you do
- 43:20because I want the shit eating grin.
- 43:22You know, the quarterback grin that Tom Brady has.
- 43:24I know
- 43:24nothing about football, but all the women like the quarterback is a quarterback.
- 43:27You know,
- 43:27what's hot about the quarterback.
- 43:29Not just, you look good.
- 43:29And he threw the ball at the
- 43:31shit eating grin.
- 43:32I want my kid to have that grin.
- 43:34Like, yeah, of course I can do that.
- 43:35that grin comes from you saying when your kid does something,
- 43:39gets an A and a Tesco, of course you did.
- 43:41You deserve that.
- 43:42Not only do you study hard, be proud of yourself.
- 43:44You want to give all the praise,
- 43:46all the power that your kid did it and take no credit.
- 43:49And most of us want to take credit of our own insecurity.
- 43:53Just pure gold, Michael, pure gold.
- 43:56Like I hope every parent listening replays what you just said,
- 44:01because it really does make a difference.
- 44:03I learned so much of what you're saying through your courses and it, and it works and it's real
- 44:10and you see it play out in the kids and it's fricking amazing.
- 44:15It takes time.
- 44:15It's not going
- 44:16to happen overnight, but after the same way that social media gets in your little bump,
- 44:21you got a message, you got a message, just drop things off to you.
- 44:23Just say to your kids,
- 44:24if you ever want to get better basketball, let me know.
- 44:26I might have a couple ideas.
- 44:27Then shut up, mom and dad.
- 44:29If they come to you, go, you know what?
- 44:30I want to get better.
- 44:31Say,
- 44:31Hey, if you ever want to get better at throwing the ball, if you ever want to get better at
- 44:33tennis, you just let me know.
- 44:34I might have a couple ideas.
- 44:36And you put your hands up like you're in jujitsu because you don't want to fight.
- 44:39You don't, you don't like this.
- 44:39You're just like, I might have something.
- 44:41You back out of it and let them come to you.
- 44:43When they come to you on their own accord, they're coming to you from power.
- 44:47And you want your kids to feel freaking powerful.
- 44:50Now you're okay.
- 44:51So you have a bunch of programs, but there's one in particular called core.
- 44:56Yep.
- 44:56And you let, so it's, it's for adults all the way down to 13, right?
- 45:0213, 14.
- 45:04If they're 13 and three quarters and they're mature and they're not being babysat, it's
- 45:09really 14.
- 45:10But yes, yes, we are.
- 45:12So our daughter, our daughter, our youngest daughters are each similar or my oldest daughter,
- 45:16but your youngest daughter are similar ages.
- 45:18And, uh, we are so excited to bring her to court when she turns 14 in 2026.
- 45:25The ritual is missing in kids' lives and in adults as well.
- 45:30And I know that CORE is so much more than a ritual.
- 45:35There's so much that happens.
- 45:36I won't share any of it because it needs to be revealed in the moment.
- 45:39But can you talk about that so that parents of 14-year-olds and or themselves can come to this program?
- 45:46It's a life-changing program.
- 45:49Yeah.
- 45:50Everybody needs to do it.
- 45:51It is not a success program.
- 45:53It's really about understanding the limits that we create in our lives and the things we do through our language, how we talk about the things we do.
- 45:58And it's really about resetting our minds.
- 46:02And it's not weird at all.
- 46:04It's like it's the most human conversation ever.
- 46:06So I've been running the program since 2008.
- 46:09It's two and a half days.
- 46:10That's the logistics.
- 46:11It's in Scottsdale.
- 46:13You come see me.
- 46:13It's beautiful here.
- 46:14It's a great little benefit to come here.
- 46:17the interesting thing about the event is in 2022 i stood up and i said to everyone in the room
- 46:22there were 400 people there and i said um i want to make this for families because i truly believe
- 46:27we will change the world by the dinner table we'll change the world because when tara came the first
- 46:31time to core she was going through the typical 14 year old things bullying kids pressures all
- 46:37that stuff and i was already running the event i'm like you know what let's bring young adults
- 46:41in so they can hear about it number one is they can see the things we screwed up on so they don't
- 46:45but we can get a set set of language.
- 46:46So what happened was when it was over,
- 46:49Debra kicked me under the table because we were at dinner with her and her friends afterwards.
- 46:52She goes, we can actually have a conversation at dinner now because we're on the same page.
- 46:55So
- 46:56it builds a set of language amongst parents and children to understand our psychology of what
- 47:02makes us do the things that we do.
- 47:04It gets us at peace with the things that happened or happening
- 47:08and the things we want in our lives and how to talk about them in a way to make them real and
- 47:12make impossible.
- 47:13It also explains human nature, what makes us do the things that we do.
- 47:16Because
- 47:17whether it's something really bad that happened or something really good that happened, learning
- 47:20how to frame that correctly to ourselves and others and talk about it changes everything.
- 47:25And the biggest result that I've seen is because the young adults and the teens in the room,
- 47:30and it's great for, it's not a kid's course.
- 47:32It's a human course.
- 47:34Yeah.
- 47:34They're doing this with the adults in the room, but they are in their own little enclave,
- 47:38right?
- 47:38They're in there together.
- 47:39And what's so cool about it is they're learning as much as we
- 47:43are and we take their phones, don't tell them.
- 47:46And, um, and they don't need them back and they
- 47:48connect, they get together, they open up, they share, they care, and they'll talk about things
- 47:53that are absolutely amazing.
- 47:54So when you change the communication in the house, you create
- 47:57possibilities.
- 47:58When we change the communication around the dinner table, it stops being about
- 48:01either nothing or something.
- 48:02And one of the biggest wins people walk out of is like, I actually know
- 48:05what my kids want.
- 48:06I know what my mom wants and we've now talked about it.
- 48:10And now that we've
- 48:11talked about it, we're free to go get it versus keeping a lot of stuff inside.
- 48:15So it is such a
- 48:16simple program, but it comes in on a Thursday.
- 48:19By the time you leave on Sunday, you are more
- 48:21effective what's going on.
- 48:22So I don't think I've ever talked about that live on a podcast exactly
- 48:26before.
- 48:26It's more like, yeah, I got an event.
- 48:27You should go see it.
- 48:28Why it's in part important is
- 48:31it's what they did in the old times.
- 48:33It's, it's Aristotle.
- 48:35It's, it's the caveman it's ancestral,
- 48:37but it's also like, it's biblical.
- 48:39Like you, without, without the Bible, you know what I'm
- 48:41saying?
- 48:41You could bring your, I don't care what you study.
- 48:43You're going to be like, Oh my God,
- 48:44that reminds me of the Bible.
- 48:45Oh my God, that reminds me of the Torah.
- 48:46Oh my God, that reminds
- 48:47me of the Quran.
- 48:47You will say that when we're there, because it's human beings getting away
- 48:50from tech for two and a half days to figure out who they are and where they want to go in their
- 48:55life and getting really clear and removing all the clutter so they can go get it.
- 48:57And they come
- 48:58back to their life, the stronger, more powerful and better.
- 49:00And the byproduct is people will say
- 49:02to me, Michael, you didn't even talk about not drinking and thousands of people every year quit
- 49:06drinking and their family does.
- 49:07People will say to me, Michael, you didn't tell me about losing
- 49:09weight at once.
- 49:10And I literally came back and ate differently.
- 49:12Michael, I met a lady while I was
- 49:13there.
- 49:14She literally showed me two things, nothing to do with you.
- 49:16And now I'm on this product and I
- 49:18feel healthier and better.
- 49:19I had no idea about a mitochondria.
- 49:20Do you know what I'm saying?
- 49:21It is freaking awesome.
- 49:23And I'm glad you're on board, James.
- 49:25I'd love to get as many people in
- 49:27their families as possible to share it.
- 49:29And my guarantee is simple.
- 49:30You will never be the same
- 49:32again after you leave and what it is you feel in your heart will start living in reality.
- 49:38And everything Michael just said about it is true.
- 49:41I have done it.
- 49:42I undersold it right there, didn't I?
- 49:43Yeah, I've done it.
- 49:45It really is phenomenal.
- 49:47And why I'm pushing it to every 14 year old
- 49:51and beyond, but every 14 year old is because I believe this will change the world.
- 49:56If every
- 49:5714 year old went to core, not only would they change, but as you said, the family would change.
- 50:03And it, I wish it for everyone.
- 50:07I really do.
- 50:08I will continue to speak from the mountaintop about
- 50:11it and encourage people to do it because I really do believe it is that important.
- 50:15It's interesting you say this because I believe what the event does is if you don't let your
- 50:19child decide who they are from their heart of who they really are versus from the internet,
- 50:25someone else is going to decide for them yes and at that event a 65 year old man and a 14 year old
- 50:31girl will decide who they are from a deep place and i don't mean weird like i mean literally
- 50:39just decide like i've had people my child's introverted stop telling him that they will go
- 50:43to the event and they will stand in a freaking chair and they will have a ton of energy and
- 50:47they'll scream my parent will go how did you get him to do that why did you stop him from doing
- 50:51that don't ask yourself that but whatever you did up till now would you not communicate you
- 50:54will stop calling your kid an introvert you will stop saying your kid is add you will stop saying
- 50:58that and let your kid have half a chance so i believe it's a place where we can decide and
- 51:02declare who the hell we are and and learn how to do it publicly and when you publicly this is
- 51:07ancestral when we amongst people share what we want and who we are it becomes possible when we
- 51:13keep it in ourselves like this shit never happens ah yes all right final question
- 51:22if you could wave a magic wand bring back one ancestral practice what would it be
- 51:29that's really really good um i like what i was saying a minute ago if we were go back to really
- 51:33really long ancestors a long time ago i would i would bring back the retreat i would bring back
- 51:39the going and being in nature and being away from away from stuff and really talking and being
- 51:50together so why the sabbath is there why the no technology why the the amish culture is that that
- 51:57does this it works so i would say one of the things i'd bring back is dedicating a certain
- 52:02amount of time and i know it's there because some of you are going to listen and go we already do
- 52:05that every Saturday or we do that every Sunday or family night.
- 52:08I would say culturally as a society,
- 52:11having a time like we had when we were kids almost where at the end of the night, the TV turns off
- 52:15and there's nothing else on.
- 52:16I would love it if people would take the time to just go and retreat
- 52:22from the society, turn it all off and spend time together, getting to know each other and really
- 52:29being themselves and spending time with themselves, but with themselves together.
- 52:33And that's what I, my biggest desire is to bring to the world.
- 52:38Well, and as I said at the beginning of this, you work in magician ways, wizard ways, and you already are co-creating this.
- 52:47And I've witnessed, I've experienced it.
- 52:50And you do.
- 52:52Beyond core.
- 52:53Like core is just a taste, everyone.
- 52:55Michael is much more than just core.
- 52:57He's got book.
- 52:58He's got a book, Average Sucks.
- 53:00He's got a podcast.
- 53:01he's got so much going on so where can people go to find your universe michael burn off yeah
- 53:07so here's what i would do um number one is at a minimum i'm just going to make this real simple
- 53:12is a minimum go on instagram or facebook and just watch some of the videos we have if you're going
- 53:16to be online anyways you might as well watch stuff that empowers you and the more you click
- 53:21on the right things i would ask you all to reset your algorithm which means you'll know what you're
- 53:25watching based on what youtube and instagram tell you to watch so go watch five seven of our videos
- 53:29connect with them and then it'll start giving you more videos like that and other things so number
- 53:33one reset your algorithm over the next two weeks which means you should two weeks from now only see
- 53:38in your search bar positive incredible stuff and it should be feeding you more of that so that's
- 53:42number one uh number two you can always get my book but like miyagi says you can't learn karate
- 53:47from a book i'd love you to come to core live whether you have a child or not um we have at
- 53:53this point there's some discount tickets you can a couple ways to do that you can go to michael
- 53:57burnoff.com forward slash core live that's great michael burnoff.com you can put in the show notes
- 54:02core live this is something i've thrown out there james for a while now i have i'd love to chat with
- 54:09you and our team would so we're a little different than other people we at we're human we like to
- 54:13talk to people and so if you're serious and you're like i want to take one of these classes and use a
- 54:18little bit of Intel, send, send the words, let's figure this out, ancestral or the word influence.
- 54:27You could pick either one.
- 54:28I'd say ancestral or the word influence to 480-800-8051.
- 54:31Just send the
- 54:35word.
- 54:36You could start talking.
- 54:36It's a real phone number.
- 54:38It's a real text box.
- 54:40480-800-8051.
- 54:40And
- 54:42a human being from our company will say, Hey, what's going on?
- 54:45How'd you find us?
- 54:46Like, I love
- 54:46James, he's the best.
- 54:47And you should listen to all James's podcasts.
- 54:49He's, he's incredible.
- 54:50He's, he's an incredible human being in so many different ways.
- 54:52So 480-800-8051, send that word
- 54:56and, or just let us know how you met and we'll send you some texts back.
- 54:59If you're very serious,
- 55:00I'm not looking to talk to someone about their cat.
- 55:02Do you know what I'm saying?
- 55:03So if you're
- 55:04serious, talk to us and we can lead you in the right direction, help you out.
- 55:08So that's what
- 55:09I would do.
- 55:09And James, this was very special today.
- 55:13Um, really just seeing you and knowing
- 55:16what you've created and what you're doing for the world and, and how much your business is
- 55:20making a difference and how you run your life and your marriage and your family.
- 55:23It's very special
- 55:25to be here.
- 55:25You're, you're one of my favorite human beings on this planet.
- 55:28It's very mutual.
- 55:29And I, and I, I really do mean this.
- 55:32Your, you, your family, your programs, the community you
- 55:37create changed our lives.
- 55:41And it's doing exactly what you shared that you want in the world.
- 55:47You
- 55:47are doing it.
- 55:47You are co-creating it.
- 55:49When disaster happened in the world, you helped us through that
- 55:54by reminding us that we did not have to take on the narrative that everyone else was telling that
- 55:59we could still be in control and be present to our narrative.
- 56:04And I carry that with me to this day.
- 56:07Even during the LA fires, for example, I was very aware that I'm on the East Coast and it was cold outside and I was feeling emotionally pulled towards all those historical buildings burning down and all those friends of mine that were losing their homes.
- 56:23And I was trying to constantly remind myself of like, I don't, even though I love them and that is part of my past, I can still be present to what's outside my window and not, not be pulled into a drama that was maybe negatively affecting my let my sleep or things like that, that I could support those people in different ways, but not have it tax my own health.
- 56:44wow because you can love and care about somebody but you don't have to take it on yourself
- 56:49and that is a gift that all of us need to learn how to do i teach that at hit i know and core a
- 56:53little bit it's like just because it's happening doesn't mean you have to make it happen to you
- 56:58yep and you don't have to take on someone's depression just because they're depressed
- 57:02that's not how we connect with somebody um and they don't need you to be that way so yeah that's
- 57:07that's a big thing i remember because i believe i met i met uh margaret first yep yep and right
- 57:12around 2019, 2020, and we met right in the middle of, I don't call it the C word.
- 57:17I call it the year
- 57:18that showed up the way that we didn't want it to.
- 57:20And the group of us that went through the programs,
- 57:24the thousands of people over that course of two years, I would put data and I would put money on
- 57:31our stronger mentally and emotionally than 95% of the planet, because we learned how to make this
- 57:39mind give us the things we wanted in reality absolutely yes absolutely you're very cool so
- 57:47this is great i love being here i can't wait to watch the episode send me a send me a copy i want
- 57:51first dibs to watch hey put it on your site this is this is michael uh yeah hey thank you michael
