- 0:00Called him
- 0:00on the
- 0:00radio.
- 0:01No
- 0:01response.
- 0:02Really?
- 0:02The
- 0:02hell is this?
- 0:03So we go
- 0:04up.
- 0:04We
- 0:04try to fly
- 0:05by it,
- 0:06and we see
- 0:06the track
- 0:06file come
- 0:07by the window
- 0:07and
- 0:08we're like,
- 0:08did you see
- 0:09anything?
- 0:09He was
- 0:10like, oh,
- 0:10I don't
- 0:10see
- 0:10anything.
- 0:11So like,
- 0:12what
- 0:12the hell?
- 0:12So
- 0:12turn
- 0:12around,
- 0:13check out
- 0:14a few
- 0:14miles, turn
- 0:14back around
- 0:15and pick it
- 0:15up on
- 0:15radar
- 0:16again.
- 0:16We're like,
- 0:17what the hell
- 0:17is this
- 0:18thing?
- 0:18So
- 0:18we fly up
- 0:19and we
- 0:20go
- 0:20by again.
- 0:20We
- 0:20don't see
- 0:21anything.
- 0:22We're like,
- 0:22son of
- 0:22a bitch.
- 0:23Yeah.
- 0:23It's weird,
- 0:24right?
- 0:24Because,
- 0:24like,
- 0:24he trusts
- 0:25these tools.
- 0:25And
- 0:25I've told
- 0:26people this
- 0:26before.
- 0:27This
- 0:27is such a
- 0:27good point.
- 0:28I've been
- 0:28in that
- 0:29same
- 0:29scenario
- 0:30where
- 0:30I'm like,
- 0:30I need
- 0:30to go
- 0:31fly up and
- 0:31see
- 0:31this thing,
- 0:32and then
- 0:32I can't.
- 0:32But you're
- 0:33you're
- 0:34getting
- 0:34right up
- 0:35to it,
- 0:35using
- 0:35the tools
- 0:36that you
- 0:36trust
- 0:37your life
- 0:37with
- 0:37every day.
- 0:38And it's
- 0:38very
- 0:38unsettling
- 0:39feeling
- 0:39when
- 0:39all of a
- 0:40sudden
- 0:40you're
- 0:40like,
- 0:40is it
- 0:41my eyes
- 0:41feeling?
- 0:42So we
- 0:42pitched
- 0:42back around
- 0:43a third
- 0:43time,
- 0:43slow down
- 0:44really
- 0:44slow,
- 0:45and
- 0:45we go by
- 0:46and we
- 0:46finally
- 0:47pick
- 0:47something
- 0:47up.
- 0:48It goes,
- 0:48it goes.
- 0:49Zooming by.
- 0:50We're like,
- 0:50oh,
- 0:52How is
- 0:53it
- 0:53behaving?
- 1:05In the
- 1:05safe?
- 1:05Aerospace
- 1:06podcasts.
- 1:07I'm Ryan
- 1:07Graves,
- 1:08joined
- 1:09today
- 1:09by Austin
- 1:10Homer. Yo.
- 1:12Austin
- 1:12is a former
- 1:12F-18 pilot.
- 1:13Our career
- 1:14did
- 1:14actually
- 1:15intersect
- 1:15for a
- 1:15little
- 1:16while.
- 1:16Not sure
- 1:16exactly
- 1:17what year.
- 1:17I guess
- 1:172012.
- 1:18Maybe late
- 1:192011? Yeah.
- 1:21So when
- 1:21I was
- 1:22a student
- 1:22in VFA 106,
- 1:24which is
- 1:24the Fleet
- 1:25Replacement
- 1:25Squadron,
- 1:26or the Rag
- 1:27as we
- 1:27call it,
- 1:28learning
- 1:28the F-18
- 1:29for the
- 1:29first time
- 1:30amongst
- 1:31all of the,
- 1:32you know,
- 1:32instructors
- 1:33I had
- 1:33there,
- 1:33you were
- 1:33one of them
- 1:34specifically
- 1:35when I
- 1:35was going
- 1:36to the boat
- 1:36for the
- 1:36first time
- 1:37when you
- 1:37were acting
- 1:37as a
- 1:38landing
- 1:38signal
- 1:38officer.
- 1:39So when
- 1:40I moved
- 1:40back or
- 1:41not back,
- 1:41but
- 1:42when I moved
- 1:42to Austin,
- 1:43Texas,
- 1:44you were
- 1:44one of
- 1:44the few
- 1:45F-18 pilots
- 1:45that were
- 1:46here
- 1:46in town.
- 1:47And so
- 1:47here we are.
- 1:48Thanks for
- 1:48joining me
- 1:48today.
- 1:49Yeah,
- 1:49thanks for
- 1:49having me,
- 1:50FOBs.
- 1:50Yeah,
- 1:51let's
- 1:51just start
- 1:52a little
- 1:52bit.
- 1:52Learn
- 1:53a little bit
- 1:53about yourself.
- 1:54What brought you
- 1:55to fly in?
- 1:56How did you
- 1:56get through?
- 1:57How do you
- 1:58commission
- 1:58and
- 1:58what was
- 1:59your career
- 1:59progression
- 1:59like? Yeah.
- 2:00So
- 2:00I grew up
- 2:01in a Navy
- 2:01family.
- 2:02My
- 2:02dad was a
- 2:03fighter
- 2:03pilot.
- 2:04My
- 2:04mom was in the Navy.
- 2:05She was an
- 2:06enlisted
- 2:07place.
- 2:07She was a plane
- 2:08captain
- 2:08and then
- 2:09was a crew
- 2:09chief on
- 2:10a seni
- 2:11sky trains.
- 2:11And so
- 2:13aviation
- 2:13has kind
- 2:14of always
- 2:14been
- 2:15in the family.
- 2:16So we
- 2:16grew up in
- 2:16San Diego
- 2:17on,
- 2:18you know,
- 2:18Miramar.
- 2:18So always
- 2:20seeing jets
- 2:20going.
- 2:21Weather in.
- 2:21The world.
- 2:22That's why
- 2:22they're in
- 2:22the world.
- 2:23Yeah.
- 2:23My baby,
- 2:24my
- 2:24babysitter
- 2:24was pretty
- 2:25much
- 2:25already
- 2:25room.
- 2:25So my
- 2:26dad would
- 2:26bring us in
- 2:27to work.
- 2:28And you
- 2:28know,
- 2:29we didn't
- 2:29have
- 2:29a babysitter
- 2:29at home.
- 2:30We just hang
- 2:30out in
- 2:31the ready
- 2:31room.
- 2:32John Marker
- 2:33is on this,
- 2:33you know,
- 2:34on the
- 2:34whiteboard.
- 2:35And,
- 2:35you know,
- 2:35all the
- 2:35fighter
- 2:36pilots
- 2:36who come in
- 2:36and
- 2:37hang out
- 2:37and keep
- 2:38his company
- 2:38while
- 2:38he'd fly.
- 2:39So from
- 2:39an
- 2:39early age,
- 2:40I wanted
- 2:40to be
- 2:40a fighter
- 2:41pilot.
- 2:42And,
- 2:43you know,
- 2:43fortunately,
- 2:44with
- 2:44the dad
- 2:45is a
- 2:45fighter
- 2:45pilot,
- 2:46it was easy
- 2:46to
- 2:46figure out
- 2:47what
- 2:47the route
- 2:47was to,
- 2:48to make
- 2:48that happen.
- 2:48So we moved
- 2:50out of
- 2:50California
- 2:51after
- 2:52his command
- 2:52tour ended.
- 2:53Moved to
- 2:53Memphis.
- 2:54He was a Fedex
- 2:54guy, so
- 2:56grew up in
- 2:57rural
- 2:57Memphis
- 2:58from like
- 2:58nine years
- 2:59on, and
- 2:59then after
- 3:00high school
- 3:00went to the
- 3:01Naval
- 3:01Academy
- 3:02and
- 3:02did that
- 3:03for
- 3:03four years.
- 3:04While I was
- 3:04there,
- 3:04I did
- 3:05an aviation
- 3:06career.
- 3:06He's got
- 3:06a ride
- 3:06in the back
- 3:07seat of
- 3:07a Tomcat,
- 3:08did two
- 3:08flights
- 3:08and
- 3:09Hornets.
- 3:09So I my
- 3:11Tomcat one
- 3:12our patch
- 3:12on.
- 3:12So on
- 3:13the inside.
- 3:13Of my
- 3:13too many,
- 3:14many people
- 3:15in our age
- 3:16group
- 3:16have that
- 3:16type of
- 3:17record in
- 3:18their
- 3:18logbook.
- 3:18Yeah.
- 3:19That's
- 3:19cool.
- 3:19It was
- 3:19pretty
- 3:19awesome.
- 3:20It was F-14
- 3:20A to
- 3:21the
- 3:21Checkmates,
- 3:21who I ended
- 3:22up flying
- 3:22with in
- 3:22the fleet.
- 3:23So did
- 3:23flight
- 3:24school.
- 3:24Started
- 3:24with the
- 3:25Air Force
- 3:25doing the
- 3:25exchange
- 3:26flight
- 3:27training up
- 3:27in
- 3:28Oklahoma,
- 3:28then
- 3:29Kingsville
- 3:29for T 45
- 3:30A's on
- 3:31the boat
- 3:31and 106
- 3:33out of 106
- 3:34got the Checkmates,
- 3:35which is
- 3:36two
- 3:36seat FS.
- 3:37We were flying
- 3:37with ASA
- 3:38radars,
- 3:39so we were
- 3:40one of like
- 3:40two
- 3:41squadrons
- 3:41on the fly
- 3:42line of aces.
- 3:43And
- 3:44then did
- 3:44that work
- 3:45up cycle.
- 3:45We're
- 3:46on the enterprise.
- 3:46So you know
- 3:47constant
- 3:48sliding of
- 3:49deployment,
- 3:49which was
- 3:50frustrating
- 3:50because
- 3:51we wanted
- 3:51to go
- 3:51on
- 3:51deployment
- 3:52really bad.
- 3:53But it was
- 3:53great
- 3:53because
- 3:53we were
- 3:53always
- 3:54funded
- 3:54as if we
- 3:54were going
- 3:55on
- 3:55deployment.
- 3:55So
- 3:55we ended up
- 3:55flying
- 3:56a ton.
- 3:57We didn't
- 3:57have that
- 3:57normal
- 3:58cycle
- 3:58where you
- 3:59come back
- 3:59home,
- 3:59funding
- 4:00dries up.
- 4:00There's not
- 4:00a lot of
- 4:01flight
- 4:01hours.
- 4:01We were
- 4:01just always
- 4:02funded
- 4:03with the
- 4:03exception
- 4:03of like
- 4:03a couple
- 4:04sequester
- 4:04times.
- 4:05So we had,
- 4:06you know,
- 4:06phenomenal
- 4:07leadership,
- 4:07super
- 4:08tactical,
- 4:08all Top Gun
- 4:09guys.
- 4:10So,
- 4:11you know,
- 4:11they're
- 4:11really big
- 4:12about doing
- 4:13a lot
- 4:13of air
- 4:14to air
- 4:14stuff and,
- 4:15you know,
- 4:15really
- 4:15getting
- 4:16good.
- 4:16So
- 4:16they made
- 4:16us great
- 4:17and
- 4:18ended up
- 4:18deploying
- 4:19went out to
- 4:19Afghanistan
- 4:202011
- 4:21and then
- 4:22came back
- 4:22and did
- 4:23the work
- 4:23ups for the
- 4:23next appointment
- 4:24and then
- 4:25went to
- 4:25the rag
- 4:26in 2011,
- 4:272012,
- 4:29which
- 4:29I think
- 4:29was about
- 4:30the time
- 4:31you were
- 4:31done with
- 4:32all your
- 4:33fighter
- 4:33and BFM,
- 4:34because
- 4:34I think
- 4:34you joined
- 4:35the Rippers
- 4:35on
- 4:35deployment.
- 4:36I did,
- 4:36yeah, yeah.
- 4:38Because
- 4:38you're one
- 4:38of our guys.
- 4:39So
- 4:39one of my
- 4:40earlier
- 4:40boats.
- 4:41So I came
- 4:41out of
- 4:42the
- 4:42Checkmates
- 4:42with my Winkle
- 4:43and then
- 4:44went into
- 4:44106,
- 4:45started
- 4:46doing
- 4:46the
- 4:46training
- 4:46qual stuff
- 4:47there.
- 4:47And that's
- 4:47when I was
- 4:49your
- 4:49I think
- 4:50I wasn't
- 4:50your head
- 4:50lso, but
- 4:51I was
- 4:51one of your
- 4:52LSO because
- 4:53I remember
- 4:53writing
- 4:54seeing
- 4:54your name
- 4:54in the book
- 4:55all the time
- 4:55for, for
- 4:56your passes
- 4:57and
- 4:57obviously
- 4:58as.
- 4:58A year
- 4:58line.
- 4:59Not okay.
- 4:59Underline
- 5:00the.
- 5:00Well you're
- 5:01pretty good
- 5:01because
- 5:02the guys
- 5:03you have
- 5:03to pay
- 5:03special
- 5:04attention
- 5:04to to
- 5:05make
- 5:05sure that
- 5:05they're
- 5:05ready to
- 5:06go out
- 5:06to the fleet.
- 5:06So once
- 5:07you got
- 5:08called a
- 5:08it's like,
- 5:09hey,
- 5:09this guy's
- 5:09ready to go
- 5:10and then
- 5:10you're out
- 5:10the door.
- 5:11So and
- 5:11then I did,
- 5:12you know,
- 5:12a couple
- 5:12more years
- 5:13at 106
- 5:14at
- 5:14the end of
- 5:15that time
- 5:15went out to
- 5:17the cock.
- 5:18It was a
- 5:18dynamic
- 5:18targeting
- 5:19officer
- 5:19during the
- 5:19ISIS stuff,
- 5:20which is fun.
- 5:21What is the
- 5:21kick.
- 5:21For people
- 5:22that
- 5:22might not.
- 5:22Know
- 5:23the
- 5:23combined
- 5:24Air and
- 5:24Space
- 5:25Operations
- 5:25Center
- 5:25on a value
- 5:26deed?
- 5:26So it's
- 5:26basically
- 5:27where
- 5:27the US runs
- 5:28all the
- 5:28air war
- 5:29for Iraq,
- 5:30Afghanistan,
- 5:31anything
- 5:31in the sun
- 5:32or all
- 5:34the air
- 5:34stuff
- 5:35is
- 5:35controlled
- 5:35out
- 5:35of the chaos.
- 5:36So
- 5:36all the stuff
- 5:36they're
- 5:36doing
- 5:36right now
- 5:37against
- 5:37Iran,
- 5:37the dynamic
- 5:38targeting,
- 5:39that's all
- 5:39being done
- 5:39out of
- 5:40the chaos,
- 5:40out of
- 5:40that same
- 5:41desk.
- 5:41You know,
- 5:41that job
- 5:42was
- 5:42phenomenal.
- 5:43It was you're
- 5:44fighting
- 5:44your own
- 5:44little war.
- 5:45No one,
- 5:46kind of
- 5:46no one
- 5:47was
- 5:47telling you
- 5:47what
- 5:47the targets
- 5:48were.
- 5:48You were
- 5:48just
- 5:48building
- 5:49your own
- 5:49targets,
- 5:50finding
- 5:50your own
- 5:50people,
- 5:51doing
- 5:51your own
- 5:51strikes.
- 5:52And you
- 5:52had to go
- 5:53straight to
- 5:53the general
- 5:54to get
- 5:54permission
- 5:55to strike.
- 5:55And
- 5:55that was it.
- 5:56I always
- 5:56thought
- 5:56that would
- 5:56have been
- 5:57an
- 5:57interesting
- 5:57opportunity,
- 5:58though.
- 5:58I know
- 5:59some people
- 5:59complain
- 6:00about
- 6:01that role
- 6:01sometimes,
- 6:02at least
- 6:02in theory,
- 6:02but I think
- 6:03they enjoy it
- 6:03when
- 6:03they get there.
- 6:04But I mean,
- 6:05those are
- 6:05the people
- 6:05that we're
- 6:06talking
- 6:06to flying
- 6:07around up
- 6:07there.
- 6:07You can kind
- 6:08of,
- 6:08you know,
- 6:08you
- 6:08get the sense
- 6:09there's
- 6:09a lot of
- 6:09important
- 6:10things
- 6:10happening
- 6:10there,
- 6:10right?
- 6:11And you
- 6:12kind of
- 6:12get a
- 6:12big picture
- 6:13view of
- 6:13what's
- 6:13happening.
- 6:14And you see
- 6:14all the
- 6:15secret ops
- 6:15going on.
- 6:16It's a
- 6:17really eye
- 6:17opening,
- 6:18rewarding
- 6:18experience.
- 6:19And then
- 6:20I got off
- 6:20active
- 6:20duty,
- 6:21went to
- 6:21Harvard,
- 6:21got an MBA.
- 6:23I worked
- 6:23at McKinsey
- 6:24for a
- 6:24couple
- 6:24of years,
- 6:25transferred
- 6:25to the Air
- 6:26Force
- 6:26Reserve,
- 6:28did a
- 6:28combat air
- 6:28advising
- 6:29job in
- 6:29the Air
- 6:30Force
- 6:30Reserve at
- 6:30Asac,
- 6:32and now
- 6:32here I am
- 6:32now.
- 6:33Very cool.
- 6:34Kind of
- 6:34like Joe
- 6:35into
- 6:35a little bit.
- 6:35And they're
- 6:36the OC,
- 6:37if that's
- 6:37okay. Yeah.
- 6:38First off,
- 6:38was it
- 6:39a stand
- 6:39for.
- 6:39And
- 6:40then now
- 6:40what does
- 6:41that mean
- 6:41you actually
- 6:41do now.
- 6:42So Air
- 6:43Force
- 6:43Special
- 6:43Operations
- 6:44Command is
- 6:45basically
- 6:45the,
- 6:47you know,
- 6:47Air Forces
- 6:49Command
- 6:50that
- 6:51provides
- 6:51units
- 6:51to support.
- 6:52So calm.
- 6:53So
- 6:53that can be
- 6:53anything
- 6:54from,
- 6:55you know,
- 6:56Keats PJs.
- 6:57So your
- 6:58combat
- 6:58controllers
- 6:59parachute
- 7:00your rescue
- 7:01min
- 7:02tac piece,
- 7:03which
- 7:03are your
- 7:04basic jacks
- 7:05that are
- 7:05embedded
- 7:06with Army
- 7:06units
- 7:06all the way
- 7:07through
- 7:07specter
- 7:07gunships.
- 7:08They have Ospreys
- 7:09that
- 7:09support
- 7:10JSOC
- 7:10and also
- 7:11all kinds
- 7:12of other
- 7:12special
- 7:12operations
- 7:13activities,
- 7:1412,
- 7:14which are
- 7:14the 28
- 7:15which do
- 7:16a lot of
- 7:17soft
- 7:17Overwatch
- 7:18kind of
- 7:18armed
- 7:18Overwatch
- 7:19role.
- 7:20And then
- 7:20there's
- 7:20two other
- 7:21communities
- 7:21in South
- 7:22which is
- 7:22non
- 7:22centered
- 7:22aviation.
- 7:23So soft
- 7:24logistics
- 7:24moving guys
- 7:24around
- 7:25the world.
- 7:25And then
- 7:25there was
- 7:25a community
- 7:26called
- 7:26CAA Combat
- 7:27Air
- 7:27Advising,
- 7:27which is
- 7:28basically
- 7:29the Air
- 7:29Force
- 7:29took the
- 7:30kind of
- 7:31Green Beret
- 7:31mission
- 7:32set.
- 7:32And
- 7:33they were
- 7:33like hey,
- 7:33we want to
- 7:34we want to
- 7:34do that.
- 7:34Both
- 7:35airplanes.
- 7:35And so
- 7:36they built
- 7:36this
- 7:37community
- 7:37that embeds
- 7:38with host
- 7:39nations
- 7:39and partner
- 7:40nations
- 7:40and then
- 7:40teaches
- 7:41them how
- 7:42to do,
- 7:43you know,
- 7:43X, whatever
- 7:44that X may
- 7:45be in
- 7:46their own
- 7:46aircraft.
- 7:46So
- 7:47the kind of
- 7:47a good
- 7:48example
- 7:48would be
- 7:49we are
- 7:49building up
- 7:50the
- 7:50Lebanese
- 7:52Close
- 7:52Air Support
- 7:53and TAC
- 7:53P program.
- 7:54So guys
- 7:54are getting
- 7:55called up
- 7:55in caravans
- 7:56and A29
- 7:57and then
- 7:58going over
- 7:58to Lebanon
- 7:59and flying
- 7:59those
- 7:59aircraft
- 8:00to teach
- 8:01Lebanese
- 8:01pilots
- 8:02how to
- 8:02integrate
- 8:02with with
- 8:03ground forces.
- 8:04So in
- 8:05a lot of
- 8:06kind of
- 8:06we'll
- 8:06call it
- 8:07non first
- 8:07world
- 8:07nations.
- 8:08The military
- 8:09is very
- 8:09stovepipe.
- 8:10So there's
- 8:10not a
- 8:10lot of
- 8:11joint
- 8:11integration.
- 8:12And
- 8:12a lot of
- 8:12that goes
- 8:13back to,
- 8:14you know,
- 8:14the days
- 8:14where
- 8:15the military's
- 8:15would have
- 8:16coups
- 8:16all the time.
- 8:16So
- 8:16they didn't
- 8:17want the
- 8:17military
- 8:18having all
- 8:18this power
- 8:18to
- 8:19overthrow
- 8:19the elected
- 8:19government.
- 8:20So
- 8:20they kind
- 8:20of
- 8:20stovepipe
- 8:21them.
- 8:21So a lot of
- 8:21countries
- 8:22benefit
- 8:23from
- 8:23having,
- 8:24you know,
- 8:24the Air
- 8:24Force
- 8:25working on
- 8:25that side,
- 8:25the Green
- 8:26Berets
- 8:26working on
- 8:27the ground
- 8:27side,
- 8:27then
- 8:27getting
- 8:28those
- 8:28groups to
- 8:28talk to
- 8:29each other
- 8:29and
- 8:29teaching
- 8:29them how
- 8:30to do
- 8:30air to
- 8:30ground
- 8:30integration.
- 8:31Very cool.
- 8:32And has
- 8:33any work?
- 8:34Well,
- 8:34I mean,
- 8:34I'll work
- 8:35right way
- 8:35to say it,
- 8:36but any
- 8:36your
- 8:36current
- 8:37flying
- 8:38responsibilities
- 8:39then
- 8:39tangential
- 8:39or
- 8:40brushed up
- 8:40into any
- 8:41of the
- 8:41recent
- 8:41operations?
- 8:42Our unit
- 8:43has been
- 8:44doing some
- 8:44stuff
- 8:45overseas
- 8:46and then
- 8:46the broader
- 8:46community
- 8:47as well.
- 8:48And that's
- 8:48the NSA's.
- 8:49So they
- 8:49shut down
- 8:50the CAA
- 8:50community.
- 8:51They're
- 8:51bringing it
- 8:52back
- 8:52right now,
- 8:52but
- 8:54in a new form.
- 8:54So during
- 8:55that
- 8:55interim
- 8:55period,
- 8:56went over
- 8:56to do
- 8:57to join
- 8:57the community
- 8:58that
- 8:58ends up
- 8:58community
- 8:59is doing
- 8:59a lot of
- 9:00stuff
- 9:00for the
- 9:01current
- 9:01fight.
- 9:02I mean,
- 9:02you're
- 9:02just
- 9:03moving,
- 9:03you know,
- 9:04soft guys
- 9:04around from
- 9:05point A
- 9:05to point B
- 9:06and doing
- 9:06logistics.
- 9:07So,
- 9:08you know,
- 9:08it's
- 9:08all left
- 9:08of bang
- 9:09usually.
- 9:09So it was
- 9:10it was
- 9:11absolutely
- 9:12I'll say
- 9:12fascinating.
- 9:13I mean
- 9:14regardless
- 9:14of whether
- 9:14you agree
- 9:15with
- 9:16Venezuela
- 9:16or Iranian
- 9:17operations
- 9:18right now,
- 9:18there's
- 9:19been at
- 9:19least two,
- 9:20I think,
- 9:20operations
- 9:21that will
- 9:21probably
- 9:21be studied
- 9:22for a very
- 9:22long time.
- 9:23The capture
- 9:25of of
- 9:25the
- 9:26Venezuelan
- 9:26president,
- 9:27which
- 9:27happened
- 9:27within
- 9:28a matter
- 9:28of minutes,
- 9:28as well as
- 9:29the
- 9:29recovery
- 9:30of a US
- 9:31Air Force
- 9:32pilot, 15
- 9:33I believe
- 9:33it was
- 9:34pilot
- 9:34or weapon
- 9:35system
- 9:35officer
- 9:36that was
- 9:36shot down
- 9:37in Iran.
- 9:38Both of
- 9:39those are
- 9:40incredibly
- 9:40complex,
- 9:41multi-agency
- 9:43international
- 9:44operations
- 9:44that are
- 9:45in
- 9:46some ways,
- 9:46you know,
- 9:46almost
- 9:47the
- 9:47scenarios
- 9:48you imagine
- 9:48when you're
- 9:49training
- 9:50as a pilot
- 9:51about
- 9:51being able
- 9:52to execute
- 9:53a mission
- 9:53like that
- 9:54versus,
- 9:54you know,
- 9:555 to 10
- 9:55years
- 9:55of
- 9:56hanging out
- 9:56over
- 9:57Afghanistan
- 9:58or
- 9:58somewhere
- 9:58else.
- 9:58And
- 9:59incredibly,
- 10:00at least
- 10:00from my
- 10:00perspective,
- 10:01or at least
- 10:01maybe the
- 10:02public's
- 10:02perspective,
- 10:03they went
- 10:04almost
- 10:04flawlessly.
- 10:05Love with
- 10:06your
- 10:06experience,
- 10:06maybe
- 10:07the comment
- 10:07or one
- 10:08or both
- 10:08of those.
- 10:09Well,
- 10:09it's
- 10:09interesting
- 10:09because the
- 10:11whole
- 10:11root of
- 10:12the Joint
- 10:13Special
- 10:13Operations
- 10:14Command
- 10:14was this
- 10:15operation
- 10:16called
- 10:16Desert One,
- 10:16which
- 10:17is the
- 10:17failed
- 10:17hostage
- 10:18rescue
- 10:18of the
- 10:20Iranian,
- 10:21the
- 10:21American
- 10:22hostages
- 10:23from Iran
- 10:23back
- 10:23in the 70s,
- 10:24I think,
- 10:25during the
- 10:26tailing
- 10:26trailing
- 10:27year of
- 10:27Carter's
- 10:27administration.
- 10:28Basically,
- 10:28they tried
- 10:29to rescue
- 10:29these
- 10:29hostages.
- 10:31They got
- 10:32a couple
- 10:32C-130s
- 10:33stuck,
- 10:34they had
- 10:34a collision
- 10:34on the
- 10:35ground,
- 10:35and Iran
- 10:36turned
- 10:36into this
- 10:37big problem,
- 10:38and it was
- 10:39a mission
- 10:39failure.
- 10:40And the US
- 10:41went and
- 10:41looked back
- 10:41and said,
- 10:42like, hey,
- 10:42why did we fail?
- 10:43How can we do
- 10:44this
- 10:44better?
- 10:44And
- 10:45they stood up
- 10:45JSOC
- 10:46and that
- 10:46obviously
- 10:47born to
- 10:47Special
- 10:47Operations
- 10:48Command.
- 10:48And so
- 10:49there's
- 10:50some,
- 10:50you know,
- 10:51echoes of
- 10:52that in
- 10:52the
- 10:52current,
- 10:53you know,
- 10:54fight where
- 10:54we did
- 10:55go pick up
- 10:56that guy.
- 10:56We did do
- 10:56hostage
- 10:57rescue.
- 10:57It was
- 10:57successful
- 10:58this time.
- 10:59There were
- 10:59some C-130s
- 11:00that were
- 11:01blown
- 11:01up like
- 11:01so
- 11:01there are
- 11:02some echoes
- 11:02of that
- 11:03initial
- 11:03and
- 11:03obviously
- 11:04I don't
- 11:04I don't
- 11:04have
- 11:05special
- 11:05knowledge
- 11:05about
- 11:06how this
- 11:06operation
- 11:07took place
- 11:07beyond
- 11:08what
- 11:08you read
- 11:08in the news,
- 11:08but it is
- 11:09nice to
- 11:10see that
- 11:10kind of
- 11:10come full
- 11:11circle
- 11:11where
- 11:11you see
- 11:12what
- 11:13the genesis
- 11:13of JSOC
- 11:14was,
- 11:14and now
- 11:15you see it,
- 11:15you know,
- 11:15at its
- 11:16fruition,
- 11:16its
- 11:16maturity,
- 11:17you know,
- 11:18decades
- 11:18later,
- 11:19and you
- 11:19see
- 11:19the ability
- 11:20to go
- 11:20and execute
- 11:21like highly
- 11:21complex
- 11:22inter-service
- 11:23operations
- 11:24flawlessly.
- 11:25And you
- 11:25look at the
- 11:25Maduro
- 11:26rate,
- 11:26I mean,
- 11:27that was
- 11:27a textbook
- 11:28near
- 11:29flawless
- 11:29execution
- 11:30of
- 11:30something
- 11:30that was
- 11:31I mean,
- 11:31essentially
- 11:32the opening
- 11:32scene from
- 11:33do you
- 11:33remember
- 11:33Air Force
- 11:34One
- 11:34when they
- 11:35went and
- 11:35snapped
- 11:35that?
- 11:36Yeah, that
- 11:36president
- 11:37out of
- 11:37his palace,
- 11:38like it was
- 11:38pretty much
- 11:39the opening
- 11:39scene
- 11:39of Air
- 11:39Force One,
- 11:40except it
- 11:41just went,
- 11:42you know,
- 11:42beautifully.
- 11:42And I think
- 11:43that
- 11:43that says
- 11:44something
- 11:44to the
- 11:45whole
- 11:45nature
- 11:45of anyone
- 11:46who's been
- 11:47in the
- 11:47military,
- 11:47of the
- 11:48whole
- 11:48debrief,
- 11:49take the
- 11:49lessons
- 11:50learned.
- 11:50How do we
- 11:50get better,
- 11:51you know,
- 11:51full open
- 11:52kimono.
- 11:53What did we do
- 11:53wrong?
- 11:54How do
- 11:54we become
- 11:55better
- 11:55out of that?
- 11:55Whether
- 11:56you believe
- 11:56in the war,
- 11:57support
- 11:57the war
- 11:57or not,
- 11:58you have
- 11:59to admire
- 11:59the fact
- 12:00that, like,
- 12:00this is
- 12:01executed
- 12:01so well
- 12:02and in
- 12:02multiple
- 12:03times too.
- 12:03Especially
- 12:04for complex
- 12:04rescue
- 12:05operation
- 12:05when you
- 12:05have a
- 12:06pilot
- 12:06and a Wizo
- 12:07geographically
- 12:08separated,
- 12:09one of
- 12:09them's
- 12:09injured,
- 12:09one
- 12:10of them's
- 12:10not. Yeah.
- 12:11You know,
- 12:12rescue
- 12:12going on
- 12:13for one
- 12:13where
- 12:13you lose
- 12:14an aircraft.
- 12:14So now
- 12:15that puts
- 12:15another
- 12:16like
- 12:16PR like
- 12:16possible PR
- 12:18activation
- 12:18going on.
- 12:19So it is
- 12:20really
- 12:20fascinating
- 12:21to see
- 12:22everything
- 12:22kind of
- 12:22coming
- 12:23together.
- 12:23It would have
- 12:24likely been
- 12:24the quarterback
- 12:26and I
- 12:26imagine
- 12:26imagine
- 12:27been a busy
- 12:27time.
- 12:28The chaos
- 12:29wouldn't
- 12:29quarterback
- 12:30it
- 12:30necessarily
- 12:31because
- 12:31they'd
- 12:31spin up
- 12:32a unique
- 12:33like
- 12:34special
- 12:34person
- 12:34who's
- 12:35running
- 12:35that.
- 12:35But
- 12:35the chaos
- 12:36would do a
- 12:36lot of the.
- 12:37So
- 12:37we saw this
- 12:37in in
- 12:38the ISIS
- 12:39fight where
- 12:39if you
- 12:40had like
- 12:40a high
- 12:41value asset
- 12:43that
- 12:43people were
- 12:43going
- 12:43after,
- 12:44they'd
- 12:44put up a raws
- 12:45and
- 12:45that would be
- 12:45a JSO
- 12:46control
- 12:47with JCC
- 12:47assets.
- 12:48And you've
- 12:48got guys
- 12:49who are,
- 12:49you know,
- 12:50option,
- 12:50you know,
- 12:50operationally
- 12:51controlled,
- 12:52passed
- 12:52over to JSOC,
- 12:53but
- 12:53they'd be
- 12:54running
- 12:54their own
- 12:54ops in
- 12:55specific
- 12:56regions.
- 12:56And that's
- 12:57what
- 12:57you need
- 12:57in that
- 12:58circumstance.
- 12:58Like you
- 12:59don't need
- 12:59some,
- 13:00you know,
- 13:01someone at
- 13:01the chaos
- 13:02running
- 13:03everything.
- 13:04Yeah.
- 13:04They have
- 13:04other
- 13:04responsibilities
- 13:05that still
- 13:06go on.
- 13:06It's a
- 13:06big picture
- 13:07type fight.
- 13:08And so,
- 13:08you know,
- 13:09when
- 13:09you have
- 13:09these
- 13:09highly
- 13:10specialized
- 13:10operations
- 13:11and
- 13:11that are
- 13:11compartmentalized,
- 13:12it also,
- 13:13you know,
- 13:14there's
- 13:14room for
- 13:14leakage.
- 13:15So if
- 13:15someone
- 13:15says
- 13:16something
- 13:16at the
- 13:16water
- 13:16cooler
- 13:17that
- 13:17someone
- 13:18who's
- 13:18not read
- 13:19in hears
- 13:19that, and,
- 13:20you know,
- 13:20maybe from
- 13:21another
- 13:21country,
- 13:21that that
- 13:22could be
- 13:22a problem
- 13:23because
- 13:23the chaos
- 13:23is
- 13:23combined.
- 13:24So
- 13:24there are
- 13:25other nations
- 13:26who are there.
- 13:26So if you
- 13:27have a
- 13:28PR
- 13:28scenario,
- 13:29the PR cell
- 13:29and the
- 13:30chaos.
- 13:30Personnel
- 13:31recovery.
- 13:31Personnel
- 13:31recovery,
- 13:32the PR
- 13:32cell is
- 13:32activated.
- 13:33And
- 13:33basically
- 13:33when
- 13:34there's
- 13:34a PR
- 13:34scenario
- 13:35like the
- 13:35PR cell
- 13:36becomes
- 13:36the number
- 13:37one, like
- 13:38everyone
- 13:39supports
- 13:39them,
- 13:39no one
- 13:40priority,
- 13:40everything
- 13:41goes
- 13:41through
- 13:41them.
- 13:41They have
- 13:42central
- 13:42control.
- 13:43Did
- 13:43you train
- 13:44either
- 13:45with Asac
- 13:45or
- 13:46your time
- 13:47in the Navy
- 13:47for these
- 13:48types
- 13:49of
- 13:49missions?
- 13:49And off
- 13:50socket
- 13:50was
- 13:50different
- 13:51because
- 13:51we were a
- 13:52supported
- 13:53asset.
- 13:53And for
- 13:54cars
- 13:54they deploy
- 13:55outside of
- 13:57the base
- 13:57structure.
- 13:58So they're
- 13:58actual SOF
- 13:59assets.
- 14:00So CAA
- 14:01unit has
- 14:01to be
- 14:02self-sustaining
- 14:03for
- 14:04I think
- 14:0472 hours
- 14:04or
- 14:05something.
- 14:05You have
- 14:05to self
- 14:05extract
- 14:06basically.
- 14:06So
- 14:07the training
- 14:07was all
- 14:08involved in
- 14:08like how
- 14:08do you
- 14:09fight
- 14:09your way
- 14:09out.
- 14:10How do you,
- 14:10you know,
- 14:11get out
- 14:11of the problem.
- 14:12How
- 14:12do you link up
- 14:12with other
- 14:12Americans
- 14:13and survive
- 14:13until
- 14:14actual
- 14:14forces
- 14:15can come
- 14:15and
- 14:15rescue you?
- 14:16And so
- 14:17that was
- 14:18just
- 14:18another
- 14:18perspective
- 14:19from being
- 14:19on the
- 14:19ground
- 14:20like, hey,
- 14:20here's PR
- 14:22TPS that
- 14:23we didn't
- 14:23have as
- 14:24fighter
- 14:24pilots
- 14:24because as
- 14:25a fighter
- 14:25pilot,
- 14:26you go
- 14:26down,
- 14:27there's
- 14:28you don't
- 14:28have like
- 14:29an up
- 14:29armored
- 14:30vehicle,
- 14:30you don't
- 14:30have an
- 14:31M240, like
- 14:32you don't
- 14:32have
- 14:32all these
- 14:32weapons.
- 14:33Maybe
- 14:33your pistol
- 14:34is working.
- 14:34Yeah,
- 14:35maybe
- 14:35your pistols
- 14:35were
- 14:36wrapper.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:37Your free
- 14:37magazines,
- 14:3845 rounds.
- 14:39Like you
- 14:39don't have
- 14:40the
- 14:40training
- 14:40to use
- 14:41that thing.
- 14:41You don't
- 14:41have
- 14:42a long gun.
- 14:42So it's
- 14:44completely
- 14:44different
- 14:45type of
- 14:45PR
- 14:45scenario.
- 14:45Like as
- 14:46a pilot.
- 14:47As a
- 14:47fighter
- 14:47pilot,
- 14:48you're just
- 14:48sitting
- 14:48there,
- 14:49you know,
- 14:50as a
- 14:50passenger
- 14:50princess
- 14:51waiting to
- 14:51be picked
- 14:51up.
- 14:52So
- 14:52I specifically
- 14:53trained as
- 14:53a combat
- 14:55search
- 14:55and rescue
- 14:55mission
- 14:56commander.
- 14:56Yeah.
- 14:57Did you fly
- 14:57any of
- 14:58those
- 14:58missions?
- 14:59Yeah.
- 14:59So,
- 15:00you know,
- 15:01I have to
- 15:02give the
- 15:03Navy credit
- 15:04for for
- 15:05the
- 15:05training
- 15:05that
- 15:05they put
- 15:06us through,
- 15:06both from
- 15:08what happens.
- 15:09What do we do
- 15:09if this happens
- 15:10to us here?
- 15:11School
- 15:11and whatnot
- 15:12prepares
- 15:12for
- 15:12scenarios
- 15:13like that
- 15:13as well
- 15:14as they
- 15:14prepare us
- 15:15as pilots
- 15:15to be
- 15:16able to,
- 15:16at least in
- 15:17the Navy,
- 15:17go out
- 15:17and recover
- 15:18our own
- 15:19just with
- 15:20the units
- 15:20that we
- 15:20have
- 15:21available
- 15:21within
- 15:21the strike
- 15:22group.
- 15:22And I
- 15:22was trained
- 15:23as one of
- 15:23those
- 15:24mission
- 15:24commanders
- 15:24out in
- 15:25Fallon,
- 15:26even do one
- 15:26of the
- 15:27exercise
- 15:27at the boat
- 15:28to
- 15:28which was,
- 15:28you know,
- 15:29a whole
- 15:29nother
- 15:29dynamic
- 15:30doing on
- 15:30the boat.
- 15:31Right?
- 15:31And so,
- 15:31yeah,
- 15:32we'll
- 15:32actually
- 15:33send
- 15:33someone out
- 15:33into
- 15:34the field,
- 15:34into the desert
- 15:35for like
- 15:35the whole day.
- 15:36And
- 15:37they will
- 15:37basically
- 15:38be hunted
- 15:38by dogs
- 15:39and a whole
- 15:40team of
- 15:40experts
- 15:41driving
- 15:41them in the
- 15:41different areas.
- 15:42And this
- 15:43whole time,
- 15:44the rescue
- 15:44mission
- 15:45commander
- 15:45is working
- 15:46with their
- 15:46back seater
- 15:47to gather
- 15:48this
- 15:48intelligence
- 15:49about where
- 15:49they are
- 15:49and how
- 15:50we ensure
- 15:51that
- 15:51we have the
- 15:52right person
- 15:52and then
- 15:53build the
- 15:53actual
- 15:54mission
- 15:54plan with
- 15:55the whole
- 15:55air wing,
- 15:56essentially,
- 15:57to go out
- 15:57every cover
- 15:58these
- 15:58folks,
- 15:59and they're
- 15:59pretty,
- 16:00pretty
- 16:00killer
- 16:01flights.
- 16:01If you
- 16:01flown
- 16:02on one,
- 16:02you know,
- 16:02they're
- 16:03very
- 16:03complex.
- 16:03You know,
- 16:04the fuel
- 16:04considerations
- 16:05are
- 16:05extreme.
- 16:06The the
- 16:07the window
- 16:08that
- 16:08you have
- 16:08the
- 16:09successfully
- 16:09operate is
- 16:10extremely narrow.
- 16:11But
- 16:11they're
- 16:11hell of
- 16:12a fight
- 16:12flight
- 16:13even
- 16:13at the end
- 16:13when
- 16:14they're
- 16:14when
- 16:14they're
- 16:14shooting
- 16:14flares up
- 16:15at us
- 16:15and all
- 16:15that during
- 16:16the recovery.
- 16:17But
- 16:17have you
- 16:18have flown
- 16:18one of
- 16:19those
- 16:19before?
- 16:19Yeah.
- 16:20So
- 16:20one of the guys
- 16:20in
- 16:20our units,
- 16:21when
- 16:21we were
- 16:22working out
- 16:22for the
- 16:22first
- 16:22deployment,
- 16:23I think
- 16:23they had
- 16:23just
- 16:24started
- 16:24the whole
- 16:25MK process
- 16:26or whatever
- 16:27capability.
- 16:28When you
- 16:28were
- 16:28leaving.
- 16:28The
- 16:29Nicholas.
- 16:29Yeah,
- 16:29when
- 16:29I was at
- 16:30the
- 16:30Nichols.
- 16:30Okay.
- 16:30So that was
- 16:31before
- 16:31I left.
- 16:32So that was
- 16:32before
- 16:32I deployed.
- 16:33So this is
- 16:33like 2009
- 16:34maybe 2010
- 16:35timeframe.
- 16:35I think
- 16:36it's 2010
- 16:36timeframe.
- 16:37Well,
- 16:37real quick,
- 16:37you know,
- 16:38you
- 16:38remember
- 16:39Nick,
- 16:40we
- 16:40don't have
- 16:40to say
- 16:40last names,
- 16:41but he
- 16:42actually.
- 16:43No,
- 16:43he got there
- 16:43right
- 16:44after you
- 16:44got left.
- 16:45The Nichols
- 16:46because
- 16:46he was
- 16:46in my class
- 16:47in the rag
- 16:48and we
- 16:49both
- 16:49went out.
- 16:49He went to
- 16:50the Nichols
- 16:50I went to,
- 16:52and we were
- 16:53the only
- 16:53two rescue
- 16:54mission
- 16:54commanders
- 16:55on, on
- 16:55the
- 16:55deployments.
- 16:56We both
- 16:56went to
- 16:57that
- 16:57training.
- 16:57Yeah.
- 16:58Sorry.
- 16:58Please
- 16:58continue.
- 16:59Yeah,
- 16:59they just
- 16:59started
- 16:59it up.
- 17:00So
- 17:00one of the guys,
- 17:01suds,
- 17:01he was a
- 17:03really
- 17:03awesome
- 17:04Wiseau.
- 17:05He was
- 17:06the guy
- 17:06that the
- 17:06squadron
- 17:07was like,
- 17:07hey,
- 17:07you're going
- 17:07to be
- 17:07the first guy
- 17:08to go
- 17:08because
- 17:08he was
- 17:08one of the
- 17:09senior
- 17:09Joe's.
- 17:09So they
- 17:10sent him
- 17:10through
- 17:11the RNC
- 17:11course
- 17:12before
- 17:12he went off
- 17:13to Top Gun.
- 17:14And I
- 17:14remember
- 17:15being on,
- 17:15you know,
- 17:162 or 3
- 17:17or whatever
- 17:17on
- 17:17those flights.
- 17:18And it was
- 17:18pretty
- 17:19impressive
- 17:19watching
- 17:19them, like,
- 17:20do all
- 17:20the
- 17:20coordination,
- 17:21do
- 17:22all the rescue.
- 17:23And you
- 17:23see how
- 17:23like your
- 17:25your
- 17:25perspective
- 17:25as a pilot,
- 17:27your bubble
- 17:27gets bigger
- 17:28and bigger
- 17:28and bigger
- 17:28and you
- 17:29start to
- 17:29see like,
- 17:29all right,
- 17:30it's not
- 17:30just me,
- 17:31I'm
- 17:32just a cog.
- 17:32You start
- 17:33to realize,
- 17:33like,
- 17:34unless
- 17:35you're
- 17:35a guy
- 17:35on the
- 17:36ground
- 17:36in direct
- 17:37contact,
- 17:37you're just
- 17:38a customer
- 17:38support
- 17:38organization,
- 17:39like that's
- 17:40what
- 17:40you are.
- 17:40You're
- 17:41no one is
- 17:41the star
- 17:42of the show
- 17:42unless
- 17:43you're
- 17:43the one
- 17:44doing
- 17:44direct
- 17:44engagement.
- 17:45So unless
- 17:46we're like
- 17:46chucking
- 17:47at an enemy
- 17:48like we are
- 17:48a customer
- 17:49support
- 17:49organization,
- 17:50and you
- 17:50really
- 17:51see in
- 17:51the MK
- 17:51stuff
- 17:52because
- 17:52you're
- 17:53there
- 17:53to get that
- 17:53person out.
- 17:54And that
- 17:54person
- 17:54could be
- 17:54someone in
- 17:55your
- 17:55squadron,
- 17:56definitely
- 17:56in
- 17:57your wing.
- 17:57Right.
- 17:57You know,
- 17:57when
- 17:58you look
- 17:58at the
- 17:58Iran
- 17:58scenario,
- 17:59it was
- 18:00one jet
- 18:01that got
- 18:01shot down.
- 18:02But
- 18:02in a future
- 18:03pure fight,
- 18:03there might
- 18:04be multiple
- 18:04jet shot
- 18:05down.
- 18:05You're not
- 18:06gonna have
- 18:06all
- 18:06the resources
- 18:07you would have
- 18:08that we had
- 18:09for this,
- 18:09this recent
- 18:10PR
- 18:10if you're
- 18:10doing it
- 18:11with like
- 18:115 or 6 jets
- 18:12that are
- 18:13shot down
- 18:13and now you
- 18:13have to
- 18:13get like
- 18:14multiple
- 18:14guys on
- 18:14the ground,
- 18:15now you're
- 18:15starting to
- 18:16look
- 18:16at like,
- 18:16hey,
- 18:16we need
- 18:17multiple
- 18:17MKs.
- 18:17We're going
- 18:18to be doing
- 18:18multiple
- 18:18rescue
- 18:19packages
- 18:19at the same time.
- 18:20And then
- 18:20that can
- 18:21lead to,
- 18:22you know,
- 18:22failure.
- 18:22And
- 18:22snowball
- 18:23recoveries.
- 18:24Yeah.
- 18:24If one of those
- 18:25helicopters
- 18:25goes down
- 18:26okay, now
- 18:26you have another PR.
- 18:27So
- 18:27that's what
- 18:28it matters.
- 18:28Yeah.
- 18:28Well,
- 18:29I guess
- 18:29I'll take
- 18:29this
- 18:29opportunity.
- 18:31If you
- 18:31like to say
- 18:31Pharos
- 18:32Space
- 18:32podcast,
- 18:32please make
- 18:33sure that
- 18:33you like
- 18:34and
- 18:34subscribe
- 18:35down below
- 18:35or comment.
- 18:36You know,
- 18:36I'd like
- 18:36to ask
- 18:37Austin,
- 18:37maybe now
- 18:38if you'll
- 18:38join us for
- 18:39and ask me
- 18:39anything
- 18:40with
- 18:40some of
- 18:40our members
- 18:41in a week
- 18:42or two
- 18:43after this
- 18:43airs.
- 18:44Absolutely.
- 18:44I'm sure
- 18:45people
- 18:45will have
- 18:45a lot
- 18:46of
- 18:46questions
- 18:47after this
- 18:47conversation.
- 18:48And
- 18:49remember,
- 18:49whenever
- 18:49you do
- 18:49those
- 18:50things,
- 18:50whether
- 18:50it's become
- 18:51a member
- 18:52at Safe
- 18:52Aerospace
- 18:53or even
- 18:53just liking
- 18:54or
- 18:54subscribing,
- 18:55you're
- 18:55helping
- 18:55the work
- 18:55that we're
- 18:56doing here
- 18:56and
- 18:57speaking
- 18:57about
- 18:57the work
- 18:58that we're
- 18:58doing here,
- 18:59maybe
- 18:59we'll
- 18:59kind of
- 19:00transition
- 19:00now to
- 19:02when
- 19:02you're not
- 19:03doing all
- 19:03that cool
- 19:04flying
- 19:04stuff.
- 19:04What
- 19:05are you
- 19:05doing?
- 19:06Otherwise.
- 19:06So I have
- 19:07a balloon
- 19:07company
- 19:07now.
- 19:08We saw
- 19:08stratospheric
- 19:09balloons
- 19:09to the military.
- 19:10So think
- 19:11like the
- 19:12Ukrainians
- 19:12are
- 19:12using them
- 19:13right now
- 19:13to
- 19:14pretty much
- 19:14pick up
- 19:15loitering
- 19:15munitions,
- 19:17fly them
- 19:18hundreds
- 19:18of miles
- 19:18into Russia
- 19:19and strike.
- 19:20So that's
- 19:20kind of
- 19:21when
- 19:21you read
- 19:21about
- 19:21a lot of
- 19:22these
- 19:22strikes
- 19:22that
- 19:23some oil
- 19:24depot deep
- 19:24inside
- 19:25Russia,
- 19:26a lot of
- 19:26those are
- 19:27balloon
- 19:27borne
- 19:27munitions
- 19:28that are
- 19:28being
- 19:29hoisted up,
- 19:30carried
- 19:30a long way
- 19:30at the winds
- 19:31and then
- 19:32released.
- 19:32And there's
- 19:33a lot
- 19:33of great
- 19:34tactical
- 19:34advantages.
- 19:35Why
- 19:35balloons
- 19:36are good.
- 19:37Most of it
- 19:38revolves
- 19:38around
- 19:39you
- 19:39get above
- 19:39your eye
- 19:40ads,
- 19:40envelopes
- 19:41your
- 19:41integrated
- 19:41air defense
- 19:42systems.
- 19:42So
- 19:43I imagine
- 19:44perhaps
- 19:45this is
- 19:45something
- 19:45that will
- 19:46be updated
- 19:46in
- 19:46your future.
- 19:47And I
- 19:47certainly
- 19:48hope so
- 19:48within
- 19:48the United
- 19:49States,
- 19:49because a
- 19:50lot of
- 19:50what
- 19:50I've been
- 19:51talking
- 19:52about
- 19:52would
- 19:52necessitate
- 19:53this,
- 19:53which is
- 19:54the very
- 19:54slow speed
- 19:55gates that
- 19:56balloons
- 19:56represent,
- 19:57which
- 19:57might make
- 19:58it hard
- 19:58for radars
- 20:00that are
- 20:00designed
- 20:01to, say,
- 20:01track
- 20:02ICBMs.
- 20:03I mean,
- 20:03that's
- 20:03not
- 20:04necessarily
- 20:04a new fact.
- 20:05I feel
- 20:05pretty
- 20:06comfortable
- 20:06talking
- 20:06about it,
- 20:07but I'm
- 20:08wondering
- 20:08if that's
- 20:09part
- 20:09of what
- 20:09you guys
- 20:10are working
- 20:10towards
- 20:10as well.
- 20:11Yeah,
- 20:11I mean,
- 20:12balloons,
- 20:13I mean,
- 20:13radar
- 20:13reflects,
- 20:14right?
- 20:14That's how
- 20:15it's
- 20:15useful.
- 20:16And
- 20:16balloons
- 20:17just don't
- 20:17have a lot
- 20:18to reflect.
- 20:19They're
- 20:19made out of
- 20:20the same
- 20:20stuff
- 20:21that your
- 20:21shopping
- 20:21bags made
- 20:22out of
- 20:22very high
- 20:23density
- 20:23polyethylene
- 20:24that's
- 20:25super thin.
- 20:26So at any
- 20:27given
- 20:28point, it's
- 20:28easy
- 20:28to pierce,
- 20:29but
- 20:29as a whole
- 20:30it's kind
- 20:30of strong.
- 20:31So it can
- 20:31hold a lift
- 20:32gas in.
- 20:32And so
- 20:32that
- 20:33doesn't
- 20:33reflect
- 20:34radar
- 20:34energy
- 20:35at all,
- 20:35at least
- 20:36not to a
- 20:36detectable
- 20:37degree.
- 20:37So
- 20:38when you're
- 20:38looking
- 20:38at a radar
- 20:39system
- 20:39that's on
- 20:39the ground,
- 20:40you know,
- 20:41it's got
- 20:41to get the
- 20:41power
- 20:42output to
- 20:42get through
- 20:43the dense
- 20:43atmosphere,
- 20:44to get
- 20:45that beam
- 20:45out, to hit
- 20:46a balloon
- 20:47that's not
- 20:47reflective
- 20:48at all.
- 20:48And
- 20:49then it's
- 20:49got to
- 20:49reflect
- 20:50enough
- 20:50energy
- 20:50to get
- 20:50back
- 20:51through
- 20:51that thick
- 20:52terrestrial
- 20:52atmosphere
- 20:53all the way
- 20:53back down
- 20:53to the receiver
- 20:54so
- 20:55they can
- 20:55say like,
- 20:55okay,
- 20:56I've got a return
- 20:57off of
- 20:57something.
- 20:58What is it?
- 20:59So not only
- 20:59is it
- 21:00hard
- 21:00to see,
- 21:01but you're
- 21:02very high
- 21:02up.
- 21:02So if
- 21:03you're
- 21:03carrying
- 21:04a,
- 21:04let's say,
- 21:04a drone,
- 21:05right.
- 21:05The drone
- 21:06is going
- 21:06to reflect
- 21:07radar energy.
- 21:07So you're
- 21:07going
- 21:08to see
- 21:08the drone.
- 21:08You're not
- 21:09going
- 21:09to see
- 21:09the balloon.
- 21:10So
- 21:10you have a
- 21:10small
- 21:10enough
- 21:11payload on
- 21:11the
- 21:11balloon.
- 21:12That could be
- 21:12very
- 21:12difficult
- 21:13to see.
- 21:13The drone
- 21:13you could see.
- 21:14But now
- 21:14the drones
- 21:15up at 60,
- 21:1570,000ft.
- 21:17And most
- 21:19Sam systems
- 21:19are
- 21:20designed
- 21:20to
- 21:20intercept
- 21:20aircraft
- 21:21that are in
- 21:21the,
- 21:22you know,
- 21:2230, 40,
- 21:2350,000ft
- 21:24range.
- 21:25You saw
- 21:25this in
- 21:26the Cuban
- 21:27Missile
- 21:27Crisis
- 21:29that we
- 21:29when they
- 21:30finally
- 21:30shot down
- 21:31Francis
- 21:31Gary Power
- 21:32in Cuban
- 21:32Missile
- 21:32Crisis.
- 21:33But during
- 21:33the early
- 21:33days of the
- 21:33Cold War,
- 21:34you know,
- 21:35the U-2
- 21:35was hit
- 21:36the ability
- 21:37U-2 to
- 21:37get above
- 21:38Sam
- 21:38systems.
- 21:39So then
- 21:39the Russians
- 21:40built a
- 21:40Sam system
- 21:40that could
- 21:41hit the U-2,
- 21:41and
- 21:42they shot
- 21:42down the U-2.
- 21:42So
- 21:43they built
- 21:43that 71.
- 21:44So, like,
- 21:44well,
- 21:44if we can't
- 21:45go higher,
- 21:46we can go
- 21:46faster than
- 21:47the Sam
- 21:47systems.
- 21:48So
- 21:49when you're
- 21:49looking
- 21:49at shooting
- 21:50something
- 21:50down to
- 21:5070,000ft,
- 21:51that's
- 21:51a pretty
- 21:52robust
- 21:53missile.
- 21:54And that
- 21:54missile
- 21:55costs a lot
- 21:55of money,
- 21:56and a
- 21:56balloon
- 21:57doesn't
- 21:57cost
- 21:57a lot of
- 21:58money,
- 21:58and a
- 21:58little
- 21:58drone
- 21:59doesn't
- 21:59cost
- 21:59a lot of money.
- 22:00So now
- 22:00you're
- 22:01creating
- 22:01a cost
- 22:02asymmetry
- 22:03that,
- 22:03you know,
- 22:04bit us.
- 22:04And
- 22:05in the back
- 22:06side.
- 22:06It can make
- 22:06the outcome
- 22:07inevitable
- 22:07regardless
- 22:08how
- 22:08effective
- 22:08anyone
- 22:09system is.
- 22:10Flight
- 22:11100
- 22:11balloons.
- 22:12There's no
- 22:12one has got
- 22:13100
- 22:13interceptors
- 22:14ready
- 22:14to go.
- 22:14Take out
- 22:15all of those.
- 22:15And
- 22:16if the interceptor
- 22:16is a half
- 22:17million
- 22:17dollars
- 22:18and your
- 22:18balloons
- 22:18$50,000,
- 22:20that's
- 22:20a cost
- 22:21asymmetry.
- 22:21Just like
- 22:22we
- 22:22experience
- 22:23in
- 22:23Afghanistan,
- 22:23where
- 22:24you're
- 22:24using
- 22:24a $50,000
- 22:26Hellfire to
- 22:27blow up
- 22:27a dirt hut,
- 22:28you can't,
- 22:29you know,
- 22:30over time,
- 22:30that fight
- 22:31doesn't
- 22:31compute.
- 22:32Yeah.
- 22:32And
- 22:32there's,
- 22:33you know,
- 22:33supply
- 22:34chain
- 22:34limitations.
- 22:34You can't
- 22:35make an
- 22:35instant
- 22:35amount
- 22:36of them.
- 22:36You create
- 22:37a logistics
- 22:37problem.
- 22:38Right?
- 22:38Like it
- 22:39goes
- 22:39back to
- 22:39that quote.
- 22:40I forget
- 22:41you
- 22:41said it,
- 22:41but
- 22:42amateurs
- 22:43talk about
- 22:43tactics.
- 22:44Professionals
- 22:45talk about
- 22:45logistics.
- 22:46And
- 22:46if you can
- 22:47defeat the
- 22:47supply
- 22:48chain,
- 22:48then you're
- 22:49creating
- 22:49a really
- 22:50big
- 22:50sustainability
- 22:51problem
- 22:51for which
- 22:52affects
- 22:52someone's
- 22:53ability
- 22:53and
- 22:53willingness
- 22:54to fight.
- 22:54From your
- 22:55perspective,
- 22:55what's
- 22:56kind of
- 22:56the latest
- 22:57on balloon
- 22:59technology?
- 23:00You know
- 23:00that you're
- 23:01sharing
- 23:02these
- 23:02things
- 23:03free
- 23:03floating,
- 23:04and
- 23:04you need to
- 23:04release
- 23:04them into a
- 23:05properly
- 23:06selected
- 23:06Airstream.
- 23:08Do
- 23:08they have
- 23:08some
- 23:08limited
- 23:09mobility?
- 23:10Are they
- 23:11self-powered
- 23:12via solar
- 23:13or other
- 23:13method?
- 23:14Do
- 23:14they have
- 23:14flexibility
- 23:15in
- 23:15operations,
- 23:16or are they
- 23:16kind of
- 23:17what one
- 23:17would
- 23:17imagine
- 23:18from a
- 23:18balloon?
- 23:18They are.
- 23:19There's a
- 23:19lot of
- 23:20reinvestment
- 23:21in the space
- 23:22right now.
- 23:22There's
- 23:22a lot of
- 23:23great
- 23:23companies
- 23:23out there
- 23:24that are
- 23:24doing
- 23:25really good
- 23:26work.
- 23:27You know,
- 23:27Raven
- 23:27Aerostar
- 23:28is an
- 23:28American
- 23:28company
- 23:29that makes
- 23:29phenomenal
- 23:29balloons.
- 23:30They've been
- 23:30there.
- 23:31The big
- 23:31name in
- 23:31the
- 23:31industry
- 23:32in America
- 23:32at least,
- 23:33and
- 23:33they make
- 23:34giant
- 23:34balloons.
- 23:35I'm talking
- 23:35stadium
- 23:36sized
- 23:36balloons
- 23:36that carry,
- 23:37you know,
- 23:38thousands
- 23:38of pounds
- 23:39of payloads
- 23:40for NASA.
- 23:40So,
- 23:41you know,
- 23:41for a
- 23:43space
- 23:43mission
- 23:43that
- 23:43doesn't
- 23:44qualify
- 23:44to go out
- 23:45into space
- 23:45or get
- 23:45time on
- 23:46Hubble or,
- 23:47you know,
- 23:47or the
- 23:48James Webb
- 23:49Space
- 23:49Telescope,
- 23:50they'll
- 23:50put it
- 23:50on a space
- 23:51telescope,
- 23:52hoist it up
- 23:52by a
- 23:52balloon
- 23:53in
- 23:53Antarctica,
- 23:53and then
- 23:54fly it
- 23:55around to
- 23:55do it.
- 23:55Space
- 23:56mission.
- 23:56So these
- 23:56are million
- 23:57dollar
- 23:57balloons
- 23:57and
- 23:57they make
- 23:58phenomenal
- 23:58balloons.
- 23:58They've
- 23:59moved down
- 23:59market
- 23:59as well.
- 24:00They make
- 24:00a lot
- 24:00of balloons
- 24:01that
- 24:01kind of
- 24:02are
- 24:02competitors
- 24:02to ours
- 24:03that are
- 24:03very high
- 24:04performing,
- 24:04maneuverable.
- 24:05Another
- 24:05company
- 24:06called
- 24:06urban Sky
- 24:07has been
- 24:07doing
- 24:08great work
- 24:08building
- 24:09maneuverable
- 24:09balloons
- 24:10to do
- 24:10image
- 24:10collection
- 24:11and
- 24:11gathering.
- 24:12Again.
- 24:12They make
- 24:13great
- 24:13systems
- 24:13overseas.
- 24:14There's
- 24:14companies,
- 24:15I think
- 24:15there's a
- 24:15company
- 24:15called
- 24:15Kelly
- 24:16out of,
- 24:17I want to
- 24:17say, one
- 24:18of the
- 24:18Scandinavian
- 24:18countries
- 24:19that's
- 24:19building a
- 24:21kind of
- 24:21a rigid
- 24:21airship
- 24:22that is
- 24:22supposed to
- 24:23be high
- 24:23altitude
- 24:23and
- 24:24maneuverable.
- 24:24So
- 24:24the whole
- 24:25lighter
- 24:25than air
- 24:26space
- 24:26is getting
- 24:26a lot
- 24:27of
- 24:27reinvestment,
- 24:27and there's
- 24:28a lot of
- 24:28good
- 24:28technology
- 24:29going in.
- 24:29You're
- 24:30still
- 24:30bounded by
- 24:31and we're
- 24:31pushing up
- 24:32against
- 24:32the edges
- 24:32of, of
- 24:33just,
- 24:33you know,
- 24:34basic
- 24:34material
- 24:35science.
- 24:35And,
- 24:35and
- 24:36you still
- 24:36have it's
- 24:37still
- 24:37buoyancy.
- 24:37Right.
- 24:38It's
- 24:38you have to
- 24:39to lift
- 24:39x
- 24:40amount of weight.
- 24:40You have
- 24:40to displace
- 24:41that same
- 24:41amount
- 24:42of air.
- 24:42And
- 24:43the atmosphere
- 24:43is still
- 24:44the
- 24:44same density
- 24:44it was 100
- 24:45years ago.
- 24:45So,
- 24:46you know,
- 24:47if you want
- 24:47maneuverability,
- 24:48you need
- 24:49power.
- 24:49If you need
- 24:49power,
- 24:50you need
- 24:50energy
- 24:50density.
- 24:51So that
- 24:51requires
- 24:52weight,
- 24:52which means
- 24:53you need to
- 24:53displace
- 24:54more.
- 24:54So you need
- 24:54bigger
- 24:55vehicles.
- 24:55So
- 24:55these are
- 24:56all trade
- 24:56offs that
- 24:57happen
- 24:57in the space.
- 24:58Whether,
- 24:58you know,
- 24:58if you're
- 24:59building a
- 24:59rigid
- 24:59airship,
- 25:00you know
- 25:00there's
- 25:00a lot
- 25:01more
- 25:01investment
- 25:01in rigid
- 25:02airships
- 25:02right now.
- 25:02But rigid
- 25:03airships
- 25:04are great
- 25:04until they
- 25:04get on the ground
- 25:05because
- 25:06they're
- 25:06heavy.
- 25:06They need a
- 25:07big place
- 25:07to
- 25:07be stored
- 25:08because
- 25:08they don't
- 25:09do well
- 25:09in
- 25:09thunderstorms.
- 25:10So
- 25:10everything
- 25:11is a
- 25:11trade off.
- 25:12And
- 25:12something
- 25:13that
- 25:13functions
- 25:13really well
- 25:14at a high
- 25:14altitude
- 25:15generally
- 25:16doesn't
- 25:17do so
- 25:17well in the
- 25:18thick,
- 25:18dense,
- 25:19violent
- 25:20lower
- 25:21atmosphere
- 25:21air.
- 25:22So,
- 25:23you know,
- 25:23high aspect
- 25:24ratio
- 25:24gliders
- 25:25tend to get
- 25:25beaten up
- 25:26pretty hard
- 25:26when they
- 25:27come back
- 25:27down to the
- 25:28terrestrial
- 25:28environment.
- 25:29So there's
- 25:30a whole
- 25:30range
- 25:30of
- 25:31different
- 25:31balloon
- 25:31technologies.
- 25:32The ones we
- 25:33produce are
- 25:34first
- 25:35and
- 25:35foremost,
- 25:35we solve
- 25:36for cost
- 25:37and we want
- 25:37simplicity.
- 25:38So
- 25:38our balloons
- 25:39are riding
- 25:39with
- 25:39the wind.
- 25:40So we
- 25:41if we want
- 25:41to be over
- 25:42a certain
- 25:42point,
- 25:42we pick a good
- 25:43launch
- 25:43point to
- 25:44ride
- 25:44the winds
- 25:45to get over
- 25:45that point.
- 25:46Other
- 25:46balloon
- 25:46systems
- 25:47like Urban
- 25:48Skies
- 25:48or
- 25:48Aerostar,
- 25:49they can maneuver
- 25:50to a
- 25:50certain
- 25:51degree,
- 25:51right?
- 25:51So they can
- 25:52steer
- 25:52around
- 25:53and get
- 25:53above
- 25:54a certain
- 25:54point
- 25:55and maybe
- 25:55even
- 25:55kind of
- 25:56do somewhat
- 25:56of a
- 25:56position
- 25:57hold.
- 25:57But again,
- 25:58that's
- 25:58all
- 25:58dependent
- 25:59upon the winds.
- 25:59And because
- 26:00they're
- 26:00using
- 26:01ballasting
- 26:01and other
- 26:01technologies,
- 26:03they have
- 26:04to
- 26:04still ride
- 26:05a wind current.
- 26:05So
- 26:06if you want
- 26:06to go from
- 26:07east
- 26:07to west,
- 26:08there has
- 26:08to be
- 26:09somewhere
- 26:10a win,
- 26:11you know, a
- 26:11windstream
- 26:11that's
- 26:12moving in
- 26:12that
- 26:12direction.
- 26:13Otherwise
- 26:13they're not
- 26:14going
- 26:14to fight
- 26:14against
- 26:14the wind.
- 26:15Do you have
- 26:15any
- 26:15thoughts
- 26:15about the
- 26:17Chinese
- 26:18balloon
- 26:18escapades?
- 26:20Oh, man.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20I mean,
- 26:21there's
- 26:21totally
- 26:21spying
- 26:22on us.
- 26:23But let
- 26:24me just
- 26:25ask this.
- 26:25I guess
- 26:26what you
- 26:26understand
- 26:27about that
- 26:27scenario,
- 26:28does that
- 26:28update your
- 26:29thinking?
- 26:29Oh, it's
- 26:29capable
- 26:30with
- 26:30balloons
- 26:30right now
- 26:31or is that
- 26:31fit your
- 26:32understanding
- 26:32of.
- 26:33I mean,
- 26:33it was
- 26:33validating
- 26:34for us.
- 26:35We had
- 26:35several
- 26:35people
- 26:36we were talking
- 26:36to that
- 26:36called us
- 26:37back
- 26:37afterwards.
- 26:37And we're
- 26:38like, wait,
- 26:40we need to have
- 26:40another
- 26:40conversation
- 26:41because
- 26:42this is an
- 26:42actual
- 26:43threat.
- 26:43We're like,
- 26:43yes,
- 26:44this is a
- 26:44threat.
- 26:44Like for
- 26:45all
- 26:46the reasons
- 26:46I told you,
- 26:47you know,
- 26:47several
- 26:48weeks ago,
- 26:48several
- 26:48months ago,
- 26:49I told you
- 26:50why
- 26:50this is a
- 26:51great technology
- 26:51and now
- 26:52you're
- 26:52finally
- 26:53seeing it.
- 26:53You know,
- 26:53it's always
- 26:54good.
- 26:54And you're,
- 26:55you know,
- 26:55another
- 26:56nation,
- 26:56a
- 26:56competitor
- 26:57nation.
- 26:57Validate
- 26:58your
- 26:58technology
- 26:59for you.
- 26:59Yeah.
- 26:59And I mean,
- 27:00the reason,
- 27:01you know,
- 27:01I obviously
- 27:02I don't
- 27:02have any
- 27:02privy
- 27:03information
- 27:03to this,
- 27:03but
- 27:04you don't
- 27:04want to
- 27:05go shoot
- 27:05that thing
- 27:06down with
- 27:06your top
- 27:07of the line
- 27:07missile
- 27:08and top of
- 27:08the line
- 27:09aircraft.
- 27:09There's
- 27:10a reason
- 27:10they
- 27:10shut it
- 27:10down with
- 27:11the heat
- 27:11seeker.
- 27:11Because,
- 27:12you know,
- 27:13who knows
- 27:13what's
- 27:14what.
- 27:14It's
- 27:14collecting.
- 27:15Probably
- 27:15doing some
- 27:16RF
- 27:16collecting,
- 27:16and
- 27:17you don't
- 27:17want to
- 27:17put your
- 27:18F-22 radar
- 27:19into a
- 27:19target
- 27:20targeting
- 27:20mode.
- 27:21So
- 27:21it can just
- 27:21sit there
- 27:22and sniff
- 27:22the proof
- 27:23of that.
- 27:23Yeah,
- 27:23exactly.
- 27:24It's a
- 27:24honeypot,
- 27:25right?
- 27:25I mean.
- 27:25Yeah,
- 27:26it's a
- 27:26honeypot.
- 27:27Exactly.
- 27:27And so
- 27:28balloons
- 27:29aren't
- 27:29going away.
- 27:30And I
- 27:30would be
- 27:31shocked
- 27:31if you don't
- 27:32see more
- 27:33of them
- 27:33and war
- 27:34going ahead
- 27:34because
- 27:35warfare
- 27:35is moving
- 27:35back
- 27:36towards
- 27:37quantity.
- 27:39You know,
- 27:40it always
- 27:40vacillates.
- 27:41Technology
- 27:42causes
- 27:42a
- 27:42disruption
- 27:43throughout
- 27:43the history
- 27:43of warfare.
- 27:44That
- 27:44gives you
- 27:45an
- 27:45advantage,
- 27:46usually
- 27:46some type
- 27:47of
- 27:47targeting
- 27:47or
- 27:47precision
- 27:48advantage,
- 27:48whether
- 27:49it's,
- 27:49you know,
- 27:49the ability
- 27:50to strike
- 27:50effectively
- 27:51and not
- 27:51waste a lot
- 27:52of
- 27:52munitions.
- 27:53And then
- 27:53there's a
- 27:53countermeasure
- 27:54developed,
- 27:54and
- 27:55then you
- 27:55just
- 27:55go back
- 27:55and forth
- 27:56and back
- 27:56and forth
- 27:56and back
- 27:57and forth.
- 27:57Right?
- 27:58So,
- 27:58you know,
- 27:59back in
- 27:59Vietnam,
- 27:59they said,
- 27:59oh,
- 28:00the gun,
- 28:00we
- 28:00don't need
- 28:00guns
- 28:01anymore
- 28:01on
- 28:01airplanes
- 28:01because
- 28:02we've got
- 28:02missiles.
- 28:02Well,
- 28:02now that
- 28:02we can
- 28:03defeat
- 28:03missiles
- 28:03with a host
- 28:05of
- 28:05different
- 28:05technologies,
- 28:06we'll
- 28:06put the gun
- 28:07back on
- 28:07the F-35.
- 28:08You know,
- 28:08balloons
- 28:09were
- 28:09thought
- 28:09to be done,
- 28:10but
- 28:10balloons
- 28:10are
- 28:10coming back
- 28:11because now
- 28:12nothing can
- 28:12reach up
- 28:13and
- 28:13touch them.
- 28:13So you're
- 28:14constantly
- 28:14going back
- 28:15and forth.
- 28:15And when
- 28:15you see,
- 28:16you know,
- 28:17the use
- 28:17of drones,
- 28:19you
- 28:19see that
- 28:20quantity.
- 28:20And again,
- 28:21this is
- 28:21another
- 28:22borrowed
- 28:22quote
- 28:23quantity
- 28:23as
- 28:23a quality
- 28:24into its own.
- 28:24And so when
- 28:25you can
- 28:25overwhelm
- 28:26an
- 28:27adversary
- 28:27with cheap
- 28:28munitions,
- 28:30you
- 28:30don't have
- 28:30to.
- 28:31Those
- 28:31things
- 28:31don't have
- 28:31to be
- 28:32the perfect
- 28:32munition.
- 28:33They don't
- 28:33have to
- 28:33maneuver.
- 28:34My balloons
- 28:34don't need
- 28:35to
- 28:35maneuver.
- 28:35Because
- 28:37if I can
- 28:37put up
- 28:37ten
- 28:38balloons
- 28:38for every
- 28:38one
- 28:39maneuverable
- 28:39balloon
- 28:40at the
- 28:40same cost,
- 28:40like,
- 28:41why bother?
- 28:42Because now
- 28:42I can cause
- 28:43ten
- 28:43targeting
- 28:44problems
- 28:44for an
- 28:44adversary
- 28:45rather than
- 28:45one problem
- 28:47that can
- 28:47that could
- 28:48be solved.
- 28:49And so
- 28:49I think
- 28:49that's
- 28:50when you're
- 28:50looking at,
- 28:51you know,
- 28:52safety
- 28:53in the
- 28:53aerospace
- 28:54environment,
- 28:55we're
- 28:56going to
- 28:56be
- 28:56flooding,
- 28:57you know,
- 28:58both the
- 28:58air
- 28:58laterals
- 28:59but also
- 28:59higher
- 29:00altitudes
- 29:00with more
- 29:00and more
- 29:01aircraft.
- 29:01And we saw
- 29:02you know,
- 29:02this is
- 29:02the reason
- 29:03why
- 29:03RVM, RVM
- 29:04was
- 29:04brought in
- 29:05about
- 29:05the
- 29:06produced
- 29:06vertical
- 29:06separation
- 29:07minima
- 29:08for
- 29:08our craft
- 29:08between
- 29:09those
- 29:0929,000ft
- 29:10and
- 29:1041,000ft,
- 29:11because
- 29:11there's so
- 29:12many more
- 29:12people
- 29:13who want
- 29:13to travel,
- 29:13there's
- 29:14more
- 29:14aircraft,
- 29:14which means
- 29:15we built
- 29:16in less
- 29:17clearance
- 29:17between
- 29:17each
- 29:17aircraft.
- 29:18And we're
- 29:18going to
- 29:18see that.
- 29:19As you
- 29:20know, urban
- 29:21mobility
- 29:22starts
- 29:22to grow
- 29:23as drone
- 29:24delivery
- 29:24starts
- 29:25to grow.
- 29:25The air
- 29:25laterals.
- 29:26So that
- 29:27area will
- 29:27just
- 29:28call it
- 29:28below
- 29:282000ft,
- 29:29or let's
- 29:29say 5000ft.
- 29:30That's
- 29:31going to be
- 29:31incredibly
- 29:32congested.
- 29:32And the
- 29:33technology
- 29:34to detect
- 29:36to
- 29:36deconfliction
- 29:37and to
- 29:37prevent
- 29:38problems in
- 29:38that
- 29:38airspace
- 29:39from
- 29:39manifesting
- 29:40is,
- 29:41I think,
- 29:41the next
- 29:42big
- 29:42challenge
- 29:43in
- 29:43aerospace.
- 29:43Both of us,
- 29:44you know,
- 29:45collaborative
- 29:45players
- 29:46as well
- 29:46as on
- 29:46collaborative
- 29:47players.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:48So,
- 29:48you know,
- 29:49this brings
- 29:49us back
- 29:49to the balloon.
- 29:50Like
- 29:50how do you
- 29:50detect
- 29:51balloons?
- 29:51Well,
- 29:52we can't
- 29:52build
- 29:52a
- 29:52nationwide
- 29:53balloon
- 29:53detection
- 29:54system
- 29:55because
- 29:55that costs
- 29:55a lot of money.
- 29:56So
- 29:56how do we use
- 29:57what
- 29:57we have now
- 29:58to deduct
- 29:58balloons.
- 29:59How
- 29:59do we use
- 29:59what
- 29:59resources
- 30:00we have
- 30:00now to
- 30:00find
- 30:01these things.
- 30:02And that's
- 30:02I think,
- 30:03one of the
- 30:03big
- 30:03challenges
- 30:03that
- 30:04the DoD
- 30:04is looking
- 30:05at from
- 30:05a home
- 30:06defense
- 30:06point
- 30:06of view,
- 30:07and really
- 30:08any nation
- 30:08should be
- 30:08looking
- 30:09at from
- 30:09a home
- 30:10protection.
- 30:10But
- 30:11that kind
- 30:11of
- 30:11technology
- 30:12is going to
- 30:13naturally
- 30:14evolve into
- 30:16solving
- 30:16some of
- 30:16these
- 30:17consumer
- 30:18demand
- 30:19issues,
- 30:20like, hey,
- 30:20I want to be
- 30:21I live in
- 30:21rural
- 30:22Kansas,
- 30:22and I want
- 30:23to get to
- 30:23Kansas City
- 30:23International
- 30:24for
- 30:24my flight.
- 30:25I should be
- 30:25able to get
- 30:25picked up
- 30:26at my
- 30:26farmstead,
- 30:28you know,
- 30:28in an urban
- 30:29air
- 30:29mobility
- 30:30helicopter,
- 30:30and just be
- 30:31going right
- 30:32to the
- 30:32airport
- 30:32in two
- 30:33hours.
- 30:33Well.
- 30:33I think
- 30:34that future
- 30:34as well
- 30:34on its way.
- 30:36Well,
- 30:36I think
- 30:36we've
- 30:37established
- 30:37your your
- 30:38bona fides
- 30:40with
- 30:41aviation
- 30:42and
- 30:42operations
- 30:43and
- 30:44balloons.
- 30:45Aviation
- 30:45careers
- 30:46can end
- 30:46up in
- 30:46strange
- 30:47places,
- 30:47right from
- 30:48just the
- 30:48balloons.
- 30:50Some guy
- 30:50who's
- 30:51building
- 30:51balloons
- 30:52in Austin,
- 30:52Texas.
- 30:53I
- 30:53would have
- 30:54called you
- 30:54crazy.
- 30:55But,
- 30:56you know,
- 30:56now,
- 30:56perhaps
- 30:57the reason,
- 30:57you know,
- 30:58we're here
- 30:58today.
- 30:59Let's
- 30:59perhaps
- 31:00discuss
- 31:01your
- 31:01interaction
- 31:01with
- 31:01the UAP
- 31:03conversation.
- 31:04And
- 31:04there's a
- 31:04few
- 31:04different
- 31:05angles
- 31:05here, but
- 31:05I'd love to
- 31:06kind of
- 31:06hear
- 31:06how this
- 31:07this came
- 31:08on
- 31:08your radar
- 31:09and what
- 31:09that looked
- 31:09like over
- 31:10time.
- 31:11Yeah.
- 31:11So back
- 31:12I think
- 31:13it was 2011
- 31:15time frame
- 31:16this
- 31:17post-deployment.
- 31:18We're out
- 31:18in the
- 31:19whiskey
- 31:19area of
- 31:19whiskey 72.
- 31:20As you're
- 31:21familiar
- 31:21with.
- 31:21The area's.
- 31:21Off the
- 31:22coast
- 31:22of Virginia
- 31:22Beach.
- 31:23Yeah.
- 31:23And my
- 31:25Wizo and I
- 31:25were flying
- 31:26around
- 31:26whiskey
- 31:26one Alpha.
- 31:27So they'll
- 31:28whisk.
- 31:28The warning
- 31:29areas
- 31:29are all
- 31:29carved up
- 31:30into
- 31:31basically
- 31:31little
- 31:31boxes.
- 31:32Right.
- 31:33And you
- 31:34schedule
- 31:35those boxes
- 31:35and
- 31:36reserve
- 31:36them for
- 31:36whatever
- 31:37training
- 31:37event.
- 31:37Right.
- 31:37So
- 31:37if you and
- 31:38I were
- 31:38going out
- 31:38to do
- 31:38a flight,
- 31:39we would reserve
- 31:41whiskey
- 31:41two Alpha
- 31:42and that
- 31:42would be
- 31:42our little
- 31:43playground
- 31:43where
- 31:44as long as
- 31:44we're
- 31:44inside
- 31:44this area,
- 31:45no one's
- 31:45going to be
- 31:46in there.
- 31:46We can be
- 31:46femme
- 31:47each other
- 31:47without
- 31:47having
- 31:47to worry
- 31:48about
- 31:48not hitting
- 31:48anyone
- 31:49else.
- 31:50But there's
- 31:50one area
- 31:51whiskey,
- 31:51one alpha
- 31:52that's
- 31:52kind of
- 31:52a
- 31:53playground.
- 31:53Anyone can
- 31:54go in there
- 31:54at any
- 31:54time for
- 31:55any reason.
- 31:55And so if
- 31:56you have
- 31:57to do
- 31:57a
- 31:57functional
- 31:57check
- 31:58flight on
- 31:58your plane,
- 31:58you just go
- 31:59to a
- 31:59whiskey
- 31:59one alpha.
- 31:59If you need
- 32:00to go
- 32:00burn flight
- 32:01time,
- 32:01you go
- 32:01to one
- 32:01alpha.
- 32:02So we're
- 32:02in one
- 32:03alpha
- 32:03one day
- 32:04and we pick
- 32:05someone up
- 32:05on our radar
- 32:06and we
- 32:06had the APG
- 32:0670 nines.
- 32:09So we
- 32:10picked
- 32:10someone up
- 32:10on the
- 32:10radar
- 32:11and we're
- 32:11like, oh,
- 32:12who's
- 32:12the asshole
- 32:13that's in
- 32:13our area?
- 32:14That didn't
- 32:14notify us
- 32:15that
- 32:15they were
- 32:16in the area?
- 32:16Because
- 32:16usually
- 32:17when you go
- 32:17in, you
- 32:17say, hey,
- 32:1899,
- 32:18which is
- 32:19code
- 32:19word for
- 32:20hey
- 32:20everyone,
- 32:20listen up.
- 32:21I have
- 32:21an announcement
- 32:21that's
- 32:22important
- 32:22for
- 32:22everybody.
- 32:23Nicole two.
- 32:23One's work
- 32:24in southern
- 32:25corner one
- 32:25Alpha.
- 32:25Is
- 32:26anyone else
- 32:26out here?
- 32:27And then
- 32:27everyone
- 32:27would
- 32:28respond
- 32:28back with
- 32:28where they are
- 32:29so that you
- 32:29could
- 32:30ensure
- 32:30deconfliction.
- 32:31It's like,
- 32:32oh, someone
- 32:32checked in
- 32:32and didn't
- 32:33respond
- 32:34back,
- 32:34so
- 32:34we called them
- 32:34on
- 32:34the radio.
- 32:35No
- 32:36response.
- 32:36We're like,
- 32:37the
- 32:37hell is this?
- 32:38So we go
- 32:39up,
- 32:39we
- 32:39try to fly
- 32:40by it,
- 32:40and we see
- 32:41the track
- 32:41file come
- 32:42by the window
- 32:42and
- 32:42we're like,
- 32:43did you see
- 32:43anything?
- 32:44He was
- 32:44like, no,
- 32:45I don't
- 32:45see
- 32:45anything.
- 32:46So I
- 32:46put the
- 32:47hell.
- 32:47Turn
- 32:47around.
- 32:48Check out
- 32:49a few
- 32:49miles, turn
- 32:49back around
- 32:50and pick it
- 32:50up on
- 32:50radar
- 32:51again.
- 32:51We're like,
- 32:52wow,
- 32:52what the hell
- 32:52is this
- 32:53thing?
- 32:53So
- 32:53we fly up
- 32:54and we
- 32:55go
- 32:55by again.
- 32:55We
- 32:55don't see
- 32:56anything.
- 32:57We're like,
- 32:57son
- 32:57of a bitch.
- 32:58I'm going
- 32:59to see
- 33:00this thing.
- 33:00Yeah, it's
- 33:01weird,
- 33:01right?
- 33:01Because,
- 33:01like,
- 33:01you trust
- 33:02these tools
- 33:02and
- 33:03I've told
- 33:03people this
- 33:03before,
- 33:04this
- 33:04is such a
- 33:04good point.
- 33:05I've been
- 33:06in that
- 33:06same
- 33:06scenario
- 33:07where
- 33:07I'm like,
- 33:07I need
- 33:08to go
- 33:08fly up and
- 33:08see
- 33:08this thing,
- 33:09and then
- 33:09I can't.
- 33:10But you're
- 33:10you're
- 33:11getting
- 33:11right up
- 33:12to it,
- 33:12using
- 33:12the tools
- 33:13that you
- 33:14trust
- 33:14your life
- 33:14with
- 33:14every day.
- 33:15And it's a
- 33:15very
- 33:15unsettling
- 33:16feeling
- 33:16when
- 33:17all of a
- 33:17sudden
- 33:17you're
- 33:17like,
- 33:18is it
- 33:18my eyes
- 33:18feeling?
- 33:19You know,
- 33:20what
- 33:20could this
- 33:21be?
- 33:21But sorry.
- 33:21Please
- 33:21continue.
- 33:22Yeah.
- 33:22We didn't
- 33:23have a pod.
- 33:23I want to say
- 33:24we had
- 33:24the helmet
- 33:25on
- 33:25the joint
- 33:25helmet,
- 33:26but I
- 33:26can't
- 33:26remember
- 33:27if we
- 33:27did have
- 33:27the joint
- 33:27helmet.
- 33:28I want to say
- 33:28we did.
- 33:30So we
- 33:30pitched
- 33:31back around
- 33:31a third
- 33:31time.
- 33:32Slow down,
- 33:32really
- 33:32slow,
- 33:34and
- 33:34we go by
- 33:34and we
- 33:35finally
- 33:35pick
- 33:35something up
- 33:36that's like
- 33:37a
- 33:37refrigerator,
- 33:38like
- 33:38a mini,
- 33:38like a
- 33:39character
- 33:39type size
- 33:40and
- 33:40silvery.
- 33:41And it
- 33:42goes.
- 33:42It goes
- 33:43zooming by.
- 33:43We're like,
- 33:44oh,
- 33:45this is
- 33:45just mylar
- 33:45balloon.
- 33:46That was
- 33:47we
- 33:47just were
- 33:47like, oh,
- 33:48I guess
- 33:48it was just
- 33:48a mylar.
- 33:49It looked
- 33:49weird.
- 33:49How was it
- 33:50behaving?
- 33:51It just
- 33:52I mean,
- 33:53it was
- 33:53always in
- 33:54that
- 33:54corner.
- 33:54So,
- 33:56you know,
- 33:56a little
- 33:56bit offset
- 33:57from knots,
- 33:57which is
- 33:58the entry
- 33:58point.
- 33:59It was
- 33:59just,
- 34:00you know,
- 34:00a couple
- 34:00miles
- 34:02what,
- 34:02east of
- 34:03knots
- 34:03and a
- 34:03couple
- 34:04of miles
- 34:04north.
- 34:04So it's 45
- 34:06degrees off
- 34:06from knots
- 34:07and like
- 34:07a zero, 4
- 34:08or 5.
- 34:08Appear
- 34:08to be
- 34:09drifting
- 34:09or.
- 34:10That was the same
- 34:10spot.
- 34:11So
- 34:11a
- 34:11stationary
- 34:12do you
- 34:12recall
- 34:12the winds?
- 34:13I mean,
- 34:14I know
- 34:14it's weird.
- 34:15Ask a pilot
- 34:15if they
- 34:16recall
- 34:16the wind
- 34:16from
- 34:17a flight
- 34:17however
- 34:17many years
- 34:18ago.
- 34:18But you
- 34:18might
- 34:19because.
- 34:19Well, it's
- 34:20seasonally
- 34:20it was,
- 34:21you know,
- 34:22at that
- 34:22altitude in
- 34:23the 20s,
- 34:24you're
- 34:24going to
- 34:24be dealing
- 34:24with 50
- 34:25plus.
- 34:25Yeah,
- 34:26that's
- 34:26exactly
- 34:26as I say,
- 34:27at least 50
- 34:27knots.
- 34:27Yeah.
- 34:28And so
- 34:29we just
- 34:30we came by
- 34:31and we saw
- 34:32something
- 34:32that was
- 34:32about
- 34:33the size of
- 34:33a keg
- 34:33crater.
- 34:34It was silvery.
- 34:35And
- 34:36it was also
- 34:37like a
- 34:38spherical
- 34:38type thing.
- 34:39We didn't know
- 34:40what
- 34:40it was.
- 34:40And
- 34:41we just
- 34:41were just
- 34:42like, oh,
- 34:43it was just
- 34:43a balloon.
- 34:44And we
- 34:44stopped for
- 34:44just
- 34:44a flash
- 34:45as it just
- 34:45went by.
- 34:46And we
- 34:47immediately
- 34:47were just
- 34:48like, oh,
- 34:48you know,
- 34:49there's
- 34:49a giant.
- 34:50The largest
- 34:50city in
- 34:51Virginia
- 34:51is right
- 34:51here.
- 34:52There's
- 34:52people.
- 34:53It's
- 34:54probably a
- 34:54party
- 34:54balloon.
- 34:55Someone
- 34:55popped up
- 34:56in the air
- 34:56and had
- 34:56drifted out
- 34:57and out.
- 34:58Have you
- 34:58seen a
- 34:58balloon
- 34:59before?
- 34:59No, I mean
- 35:01side for my
- 35:01own
- 35:01balloons,
- 35:02but never
- 35:03on.
- 35:04You know,
- 35:04I've seen,
- 35:04like,
- 35:05a floating
- 35:05balloon.
- 35:07Like when
- 35:07you're down
- 35:07low.
- 35:08I think
- 35:08once, once,
- 35:09maybe
- 35:09twice.
- 35:10It's like
- 35:10a couple
- 35:11of those.
- 35:11A grouping.
- 35:12Of party
- 35:12balloons.
- 35:13Are you
- 35:13solid in
- 35:13balloon?
- 35:14Broke
- 35:14through it,
- 35:15broke
- 35:15his tether
- 35:16and flew
- 35:16through our
- 35:16Fallon
- 35:17event.
- 35:17Oh, really?
- 35:18One of
- 35:18those?
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:20I forget.
- 35:20What the
- 35:21big. Yeah.
- 35:22Yeah,
- 35:22the big
- 35:22blimp
- 35:22one's.
- 35:23The big
- 35:23blimp ones.
- 35:24Yeah,
- 35:24that wasn't
- 35:24a loon.
- 35:25That was a
- 35:26t t runs.
- 35:27Those
- 35:27the ones
- 35:28that
- 35:28are down
- 35:28in the Key
- 35:28West and
- 35:29they were
- 35:29in
- 35:29Afghanistan
- 35:30as well.
- 35:30Yeah.
- 35:31I just
- 35:31was like,
- 35:32oh, it's
- 35:32a balloon.
- 35:33And we just
- 35:33wrote it
- 35:34off.
- 35:34And then
- 35:34I just
- 35:35memory
- 35:36hold it
- 35:36and didn't
- 35:37think
- 35:37anything
- 35:38of it.
- 35:38Right.
- 35:38Because
- 35:39at the time
- 35:41you'd
- 35:41be crazy
- 35:42to say
- 35:42like it
- 35:42was a UFO
- 35:43or you had
- 35:43no reason
- 35:44to like.
- 35:44Yeah, it's
- 35:45limited
- 35:45information.
- 35:46Yeah.
- 35:46And you're
- 35:46like, okay,
- 35:47I just
- 35:47spent like,
- 35:48I just
- 35:49spent three
- 35:50attempts,
- 35:5115 minutes
- 35:51to try
- 35:52to find
- 35:52this thing,
- 35:52and it's
- 35:53a party
- 35:53balloon
- 35:53hippie
- 35:54shit.
- 35:54Like,
- 35:54I don't
- 35:55want to
- 35:55go see it.
- 35:55I
- 35:55don't need
- 35:56to see it
- 35:56again.
- 35:57So we just
- 35:57kind of,
- 35:58like, wrote
- 35:58it often,
- 35:58think about it.
- 35:59And then
- 36:01fast
- 36:01forward to
- 36:02two or so
- 36:03years ago,
- 36:04maybe three
- 36:04years ago,
- 36:05my brother
- 36:06in law,
- 36:07Jordan
- 36:07Flowers,
- 36:08who is now
- 36:09the
- 36:09executive
- 36:10director of
- 36:11the UAP
- 36:12Disclosure
- 36:12Foundation,
- 36:13I think
- 36:13they just
- 36:14rebranded
- 36:14to.
- 36:15He's always
- 36:15asking me
- 36:15questions
- 36:16or plots
- 36:16perspective.
- 36:17Show me
- 36:17a video
- 36:17and be
- 36:18like, hey,
- 36:18break this
- 36:19video down
- 36:19like
- 36:20be a critic
- 36:21and
- 36:21tell me why
- 36:21this is
- 36:22not a UFO.
- 36:23And so I'll
- 36:24always be
- 36:24this,
- 36:24you know,
- 36:25I'll be a
- 36:25good
- 36:25skeptic
- 36:26and say,
- 36:26this is why
- 36:27I think
- 36:27this is
- 36:27bullshit.
- 36:28And so
- 36:28he's like,
- 36:29hey,
- 36:29I want you
- 36:29to connect
- 36:30to this
- 36:30guy.
- 36:31I won't
- 36:32say
- 36:32his name,
- 36:33but
- 36:33he was a
- 36:33big UFO
- 36:33guy, a huge
- 36:34name in
- 36:34the space.
- 36:35I just don't know
- 36:35if he
- 36:35wants me
- 36:36to let
- 36:36people
- 36:36know.
- 36:36I was
- 36:37talking
- 36:37to him.
- 36:37He was like,
- 36:38hey, I'll
- 36:38talk to you.
- 36:39So
- 36:40give him a call.
- 36:40And he was
- 36:41asking me
- 36:41about this
- 36:42UFO
- 36:42encounter
- 36:43down in
- 36:44that were
- 36:45these two.
- 36:45F-22 saw
- 36:46this
- 36:46Tic-Tac
- 36:47shape thing
- 36:47between
- 36:48them.
- 36:48And so
- 36:49I was
- 36:49kind of
- 36:49offering
- 36:50my opinion
- 36:50of it. Why?
- 36:51You know,
- 36:52I thought
- 36:52it was,
- 36:52you know,
- 36:52valid,
- 36:53you know,
- 36:53encounter,
- 36:54blah, blah,
- 36:54blah, blah.
- 36:55We were talking
- 36:55about it.
- 36:56And then he
- 36:56goes, well,
- 36:56have you
- 36:56ever had
- 36:57an encounter
- 36:58with you?
- 36:58You finally
- 36:59asked
- 36:59for all
- 36:59that's
- 37:00on it.
- 37:01And now
- 37:02keep in
- 37:02mind, like,
- 37:03I've been
- 37:03in the
- 37:03balloon
- 37:03space
- 37:04and I
- 37:04have
- 37:05balloons,
- 37:05and I
- 37:06thought
- 37:07that that
- 37:08one
- 37:08encounter
- 37:08pop
- 37:09back into
- 37:09my mind,
- 37:10encounter
- 37:10real time
- 37:11on
- 37:11the call,
- 37:11I was
- 37:11like, well,
- 37:12this
- 37:12one time
- 37:13we saw
- 37:13something
- 37:13that we
- 37:14thought
- 37:14was a
- 37:14mylar
- 37:15balloon.
- 37:16But
- 37:16now that
- 37:16I know
- 37:17about
- 37:17balloons,
- 37:18that was not
- 37:18a balloon
- 37:19like
- 37:19no chance
- 37:20that was
- 37:20a balloon
- 37:21didn't
- 37:22behave like
- 37:22a balloon.
- 37:23It was a floating
- 37:24like
- 37:24a balloon.
- 37:24It was a
- 37:24moving
- 37:25like
- 37:25balloon.
- 37:25It was a shape,
- 37:26like
- 37:26a balloon.
- 37:28And so
- 37:29I was like,
- 37:29yeah,
- 37:29actually
- 37:30I did.
- 37:30And then I
- 37:30reached out
- 37:31to my back
- 37:31seater.
- 37:33I was like,
- 37:33hey, man,
- 37:33do you
- 37:33remember
- 37:34that thing
- 37:34we saw
- 37:35on the
- 37:35whiskey?
- 37:35He's like,
- 37:36yeah, like,
- 37:37dude,
- 37:38you think
- 37:38that
- 37:38may have
- 37:38been a UFO?
- 37:39And he's
- 37:39like,
- 37:40yeah, man.
- 37:41Like I'm
- 37:42pretty sure
- 37:42it was.
- 37:43And so we,
- 37:45we kind
- 37:45of like
- 37:45both like
- 37:46reminisced
- 37:46about it
- 37:47over
- 37:47a phone
- 37:48call and,
- 37:49and I
- 37:50was like,
- 37:50yeah,
- 37:50I think
- 37:51that
- 37:51may have
- 37:51actually
- 37:52been one
- 37:52because
- 37:53it didn't.
- 37:53It was
- 37:54it was
- 37:54definitely
- 37:54not a
- 37:55balloon.
- 37:56It's
- 37:56definitely
- 37:56something
- 37:56we were
- 37:57seeing
- 37:57on radar
- 37:57or
- 37:57something
- 37:57we saw
- 37:58with
- 37:58our own
- 37:58eyes.
- 37:58It was
- 37:59moving
- 37:59fast.
- 37:59And now
- 38:00like,
- 38:02like
- 38:02there's
- 38:03no doubt
- 38:03in.
- 38:03My mind
- 38:04moving
- 38:04fast.
- 38:04Or the
- 38:06third time
- 38:06we saw
- 38:07the third time
- 38:07when we
- 38:08picked it
- 38:08up, when we
- 38:08actually
- 38:09got eyes on
- 38:10and it
- 38:10just moved
- 38:11by the
- 38:11aircraft
- 38:11so fast,
- 38:12I was
- 38:12like, oh,
- 38:13we're
- 38:13moving fast
- 38:14as an
- 38:14airplane.
- 38:14So it's
- 38:15just.
- 38:15Well,
- 38:15that's
- 38:16interesting
- 38:16though.
- 38:16Yeah, it's
- 38:17hard to
- 38:17tell.
- 38:18And but
- 38:19it's
- 38:19interesting
- 38:20that
- 38:20it wasn't
- 38:20visible
- 38:21the times
- 38:21when it was
- 38:21stationary
- 38:22and then
- 38:22it was
- 38:23when it's
- 38:23physical.
- 38:23I don't know
- 38:24if that's
- 38:24important,
- 38:24but
- 38:25I'm just
- 38:25going to
- 38:25point out
- 38:25that
- 38:26seems to be
- 38:26the pattern.
- 38:27And maybe
- 38:27yeah, maybe
- 38:28it was
- 38:28more
- 38:28visible
- 38:29that way.
- 38:29You know,
- 38:30if
- 38:30there were
- 38:30highly
- 38:31reflective
- 38:31and
- 38:31stationary
- 38:32it'd be
- 38:32very hard
- 38:33to see
- 38:33up there.
- 38:33Right?
- 38:34Well,
- 38:35I mean,
- 38:35like,
- 38:35maybe
- 38:35we just
- 38:36maybe
- 38:36my intercept
- 38:37geometry
- 38:37was off
- 38:37and I was
- 38:38flying
- 38:38over it,
- 38:39and so
- 38:39I couldn't
- 38:39see below
- 38:40the airplane
- 38:40or maybe
- 38:41it was
- 38:42coming on
- 38:42and just
- 38:43like, no,
- 38:43I'm just
- 38:43dip down
- 38:44real quick
- 38:44and get
- 38:44out of
- 38:44the way
- 38:45of this.
- 38:45This is.
- 38:46Very
- 38:46common,
- 38:46though,
- 38:46that people
- 38:47are having
- 38:47a hard time
- 38:48seeing it,
- 38:48you know,
- 38:49from my
- 38:49conversations
- 38:50and
- 38:50whatnot.
- 38:51Yeah.
- 38:51Well, okay.
- 38:52Well,
- 38:52thanks for
- 38:52sharing
- 38:53that.
- 38:53It's,
- 38:54you know,
- 38:54when people
- 38:54are having
- 38:55this
- 38:55conversation.
- 38:56Right.
- 38:56And it's
- 38:57it would
- 38:58never enter
- 38:58your mind.
- 38:59It's easy
- 39:00to just
- 39:00pigeonhole
- 39:01it
- 39:01and throw
- 39:01it away,
- 39:02even
- 39:02under the,
- 39:03even under
- 39:03like the
- 39:04best
- 39:04circumstances,
- 39:04because
- 39:05you're
- 39:05actually
- 39:06out there
- 39:06to do
- 39:06something.
- 39:07So usually
- 39:08you don't
- 39:09have the
- 39:09agency
- 39:09to just
- 39:10go around
- 39:10and
- 39:10investigate
- 39:11random
- 39:11objects,
- 39:12especially
- 39:12if there's
- 39:13not nothing
- 39:13being done.
- 39:14But maybe
- 39:15just like
- 39:15a light
- 39:15Notam right
- 39:16to say
- 39:17use caution
- 39:17because now
- 39:18it's like,
- 39:18well,
- 39:19why
- 39:19did you decide
- 39:20that
- 39:20this was
- 39:20important
- 39:21enough
- 39:21to go
- 39:22look at,
- 39:22you know,
- 39:22if were
- 39:23there to be
- 39:23an
- 39:23accident,
- 39:24right.
- 39:24So actually
- 39:25kind of
- 39:26decentralizing
- 39:27you,
- 39:28I would
- 39:28think,
- 39:28you know,
- 39:29it now
- 39:29creates
- 39:29that
- 39:30kind of risk
- 39:30if there's
- 39:31a rule
- 39:31about it
- 39:31now. Right.
- 39:32But you
- 39:33know, what
- 39:33I've been
- 39:34trying to
- 39:34advocate
- 39:35for here
- 39:35with some
- 39:36success
- 39:36is that
- 39:38if pilots
- 39:39like
- 39:39yourself
- 39:40or others
- 39:40that are
- 39:41flying now
- 39:42understood
- 39:43the larger
- 39:43trend,
- 39:44that there
- 39:45were
- 39:45numerous
- 39:46objects
- 39:46in those
- 39:47areas
- 39:47at the time,
- 39:48then
- 39:48you would
- 39:48have been
- 39:49much less
- 39:50likely
- 39:50to just
- 39:51ignore
- 39:51that
- 39:51information
- 39:52right off
- 39:52as
- 39:52a balloon.
- 39:53If you understood
- 39:55that larger
- 39:55trend,
- 39:55if
- 39:56there was
- 39:56a
- 39:56collection
- 39:57system
- 39:57in place,
- 39:58there are
- 39:59indications
- 40:00from folks
- 40:00that are
- 40:01still
- 40:01flying that
- 40:01that's,
- 40:02you know,
- 40:03that we're
- 40:03moving in
- 40:04that
- 40:04direction.
- 40:04But I
- 40:05think,
- 40:05you know,
- 40:05there's
- 40:06still some
- 40:06obstacles
- 40:07to
- 40:08overcome.
- 40:08But,
- 40:09you know,
- 40:10that's
- 40:10those are
- 40:10the
- 40:11opportunities,
- 40:11I think,
- 40:11that
- 40:12we're
- 40:12missing
- 40:13to
- 40:13learn
- 40:13more about
- 40:13this,
- 40:14right,
- 40:14because
- 40:15of just
- 40:15those
- 40:15reasons.
- 40:16And people
- 40:16always
- 40:16ask me
- 40:16why pilots
- 40:17don't
- 40:17report
- 40:17more.
- 40:17And it's
- 40:18really just
- 40:18often
- 40:19probably
- 40:19for similar
- 40:19reasons
- 40:20like that,
- 40:20or at least
- 40:21it used to
- 40:21be,
- 40:21although
- 40:21I think
- 40:22that's
- 40:22that's
- 40:23changed.
- 40:24You know,
- 40:24you're
- 40:25outside of
- 40:26your
- 40:26experience.
- 40:26You said
- 40:27you
- 40:27pigeonholed it,
- 40:27but between
- 40:30when
- 40:30you had
- 40:30that event
- 40:31and,
- 40:32you know,
- 40:32when
- 40:32you had
- 40:33those
- 40:33conversations
- 40:34with your
- 40:34brother
- 40:34in law
- 40:35a few years
- 40:35ago.
- 40:36Do you
- 40:36track
- 40:37any of what
- 40:37was
- 40:37happening
- 40:39in the
- 40:39public
- 40:39with,
- 40:40say,
- 40:40the 2017
- 40:41year times
- 40:42article,
- 40:43the
- 40:43hearings
- 40:43in 2023,
- 40:44maybe
- 40:45before
- 40:45or after
- 40:46your
- 40:46conversations
- 40:47with
- 40:47Jordan?
- 40:47Were there
- 40:48any
- 40:48conversations
- 40:48that are
- 40:49ready
- 40:49about this
- 40:50or it's
- 40:50just off
- 40:51your radar
- 40:51until then?
- 40:52Well,
- 40:52I'd
- 40:52followed
- 40:53obviously
- 40:53the
- 40:53disclosures,
- 40:54right?
- 40:54The TikTok,
- 40:55the gimbal
- 40:56video,
- 40:56all the work
- 40:57you did
- 40:58and
- 40:58disclosing.
- 40:59And I mean,
- 40:59early on
- 41:00when Jordan
- 41:01was in
- 41:01that space,
- 41:02he's like,
- 41:02hey,
- 41:02do you know
- 41:02Ryan
- 41:03Graves?
- 41:03And
- 41:03he was
- 41:03one of
- 41:03my
- 41:04students.
- 41:05He went
- 41:05and went to
- 41:06my air
- 41:06wing
- 41:06after I
- 41:07left.
- 41:07But,
- 41:07you know,
- 41:08I don't know
- 41:08him
- 41:08personally,
- 41:10aside from
- 41:10the fact
- 41:11that like.
- 41:11During the
- 41:11same writer
- 41:12room at.
- 41:12Some point,
- 41:12in the same
- 41:13writing
- 41:13room at
- 41:13some point,
- 41:14but like,
- 41:14I don't
- 41:14know him
- 41:16to get
- 41:16people
- 41:16who know
- 41:16him,
- 41:17I can
- 41:17tell you
- 41:17what people
- 41:18say
- 41:18about him,
- 41:18but
- 41:18I don't know
- 41:19who he is.
- 41:20We can hold
- 41:21those
- 41:21comments
- 41:21for you.
- 41:23Well,
- 41:23there's
- 41:23always
- 41:23going to be
- 41:24haters,
- 41:24right?
- 41:24So like,
- 41:25there's
- 41:25going to
- 41:25be people
- 41:25who are
- 41:26going to
- 41:26shit on me
- 41:26for talking
- 41:27about this
- 41:28and be
- 41:28like, oh,
- 41:28you really?
- 41:28You had
- 41:29a UFO
- 41:29experience?
- 41:30Like,
- 41:30who gives
- 41:30a shit?
- 41:31Like,
- 41:31I don't know
- 41:32for certain
- 41:33UFO
- 41:33experience,
- 41:33but I'm
- 41:34pretty sure
- 41:34it was.
- 41:35And it
- 41:36speaks to
- 41:37kind of
- 41:37like
- 41:37the culture
- 41:38of the site
- 41:38guys.
- 41:39You know,
- 41:39at
- 41:39that time
- 41:40when you
- 41:40started
- 41:40giving
- 41:41that
- 41:41permission
- 41:41structure
- 41:41to say
- 41:42like, hey,
- 41:42there's
- 41:42a lot of
- 41:43things
- 41:43out here
- 41:44that people
- 41:44are seeing
- 41:45with their
- 41:45eyes,
- 41:45their
- 41:45sensors,
- 41:46like there
- 41:47there are
- 41:48things
- 41:48that are
- 41:48operating
- 41:48in Moas.
- 41:50We should
- 41:51look at it
- 41:51not only
- 41:52from like,
- 41:52what the hell
- 41:53is that?
- 41:53But also
- 41:53like,
- 41:54we
- 41:54don't want
- 41:54to hit
- 41:55these things
- 41:55either
- 41:55because
- 41:56that could
- 41:56cause
- 41:56a problem
- 41:57and that
- 41:58gives
- 41:59people
- 41:59the
- 41:59permission
- 41:59structure
- 42:00to start
- 42:00saying
- 42:00like, oh,
- 42:01I saw this.
- 42:01And then
- 42:02when
- 42:02someone
- 42:03says, I saw
- 42:04someone
- 42:04else goes,
- 42:04okay, well,
- 42:05if I see
- 42:05one of
- 42:05those now,
- 42:06I can
- 42:06say it.
- 42:08And,
- 42:08you know,
- 42:08back when
- 42:09we were
- 42:10when,
- 42:10when we had
- 42:10our little,
- 42:11like,
- 42:11flyby,
- 42:12you know,
- 42:13we knew
- 42:13there
- 42:13were a
- 42:14lot of things
- 42:14at the
- 42:14time.
- 42:14We knew
- 42:15that APG
- 42:1579 had
- 42:16problems
- 42:17with ghost
- 42:17track
- 42:18files.
- 42:18It's
- 42:18like if
- 42:19you see
- 42:19something
- 42:20that's,
- 42:21you know,
- 42:2128,000ft on
- 42:23the dot,
- 42:23you're
- 42:23like, well,
- 42:24I don't know
- 42:24if this
- 42:25UFO's got
- 42:25a barometer
- 42:27setting
- 42:27to be right
- 42:28at
- 42:2828,000ft.
- 42:29It's pretty
- 42:29interesting
- 42:30that
- 42:30they're
- 42:30following
- 42:30our rules,
- 42:31but like
- 42:31it's
- 42:31probably a
- 42:32ghost
- 42:32track file.
- 42:33So you
- 42:34learn
- 42:34especially
- 42:34with Abd
- 42:3579,
- 42:35you're like
- 42:36try to
- 42:36learn like
- 42:37what was
- 42:38something
- 42:38real or
- 42:39versus
- 42:39a ghost
- 42:39track file
- 42:40or just
- 42:40straight
- 42:41trans or
- 42:41whatever
- 42:41off board.
- 42:43And so
- 42:44you just
- 42:44kind of
- 42:45like
- 42:45because
- 42:47you're
- 42:47trained,
- 42:48you know,
- 42:48in air
- 42:49to air
- 42:49combat
- 42:49to like
- 42:50grab
- 42:50a piece
- 42:50of
- 42:50information.
- 42:51Is this
- 42:51relevant?
- 42:52Note
- 42:52boom out
- 42:53like pilots
- 42:54are
- 42:54designed
- 42:55to be,
- 42:56you know,
- 42:56ADHD
- 42:57machines
- 42:57that
- 42:58can look
- 42:58at a bunch
- 42:58of
- 42:58different
- 42:59stuff,
- 42:59process
- 42:59information
- 43:00and just
- 43:00filter
- 43:01information
- 43:01out, take
- 43:02information
- 43:02in.
- 43:03So writing
- 43:03something
- 43:04off, just
- 43:05culturally
- 43:06at the time
- 43:07was just
- 43:07normal.
- 43:08Right.
- 43:08And then
- 43:08but I think
- 43:09now that
- 43:09the space
- 43:10has been
- 43:10breached
- 43:11and
- 43:11people can
- 43:11talk
- 43:11about it,
- 43:13you're able
- 43:13to give
- 43:14people
- 43:14permission
- 43:14to say
- 43:15like, yeah,
- 43:15I saw that.
- 43:16And you
- 43:17know,
- 43:17people
- 43:17are
- 43:18looked at
- 43:18as being
- 43:18crazy,
- 43:19right?
- 43:19Some of
- 43:19the people
- 43:19in my
- 43:20generation
- 43:21of pilots
- 43:22might still
- 43:22kind of
- 43:23be like,
- 43:23oh,
- 43:23some of
- 43:23these guys
- 43:24are crazy.
- 43:24They're,
- 43:25you know,
- 43:25lunatics,
- 43:26but
- 43:26that doesn't
- 43:27matter
- 43:27because
- 43:27we're not
- 43:27flying
- 43:28hornets
- 43:28anymore,
- 43:28like
- 43:29most of
- 43:29us aren't.
- 43:29But the
- 43:30younger
- 43:30generation
- 43:31now,
- 43:32those guys
- 43:32at least
- 43:32are more
- 43:33comfortable
- 43:34to talk
- 43:34about
- 43:34this stuff.
- 43:35Which means
- 43:35that
- 43:36slowly,
- 43:36we'll
- 43:36probably
- 43:37get more
- 43:37information
- 43:38that can
- 43:39point to
- 43:39something
- 43:40that is
- 43:41actually
- 43:41valuable
- 43:42to
- 43:42figure out
- 43:43what is
- 43:43causing these,
- 43:44where are they
- 43:44coming
- 43:44from?
- 43:45Who's
- 43:46controlling
- 43:46them?
- 43:47You know
- 43:48what?
- 43:49Why
- 43:49are they
- 43:49here?
- 43:49Why are in this
- 43:50space?
- 43:51And I heard
- 43:51someone
- 43:51say
- 43:51something
- 43:52important
- 43:52the other
- 43:52day.
- 43:53You know,
- 43:54when
- 43:54you look
- 43:54at what
- 43:55we did
- 43:55to go
- 43:55pick up
- 43:56that pilot,
- 43:56those
- 43:56pilots
- 43:57in, in
- 43:59Iran,
- 44:00all the
- 44:00resources
- 44:01to go
- 44:01pick
- 44:01them up
- 44:02to
- 44:02keep them
- 44:02alive.
- 44:03Why would we be
- 44:04testing our
- 44:05own
- 44:05technology
- 44:06and arrange
- 44:06and not
- 44:06telling
- 44:07other
- 44:07people?
- 44:08You know,
- 44:08I've
- 44:08been out
- 44:09to the,
- 44:09you know,
- 44:10the knitter
- 44:11ranges
- 44:12like they
- 44:12don't
- 44:13fuck around
- 44:13with safety
- 44:13over there.
- 44:14No one.
- 44:15We were
- 44:15just doing
- 44:16flight
- 44:16testing
- 44:17in the
- 44:17National
- 44:17training
- 44:17complex.
- 44:18Lose a
- 44:19unique
- 44:19asset,
- 44:19right?
- 44:20Like.
- 44:20Yeah,
- 44:21you don't
- 44:21want
- 44:21to lose
- 44:22a unique
- 44:22asset
- 44:23because it
- 44:23hits an 18
- 44:24and
- 44:24you don't
- 44:24want to
- 44:25have some
- 44:26to tell
- 44:26some wife
- 44:27and kid
- 44:28that
- 44:28their dads gone
- 44:29because
- 44:30they were
- 44:30testing
- 44:31something
- 44:31in a range
- 44:32and didn't
- 44:32clear it
- 44:33with
- 44:33anybody.
- 44:33Like, it's
- 44:34just it's
- 44:35it's
- 44:35like that
- 44:36concept
- 44:37doesn't
- 44:37hold wait
- 44:37for me
- 44:38when people
- 44:38are like,
- 44:38oh, it's
- 44:38a military
- 44:39just
- 44:39testing its
- 44:39own
- 44:40technology
- 44:40without telling
- 44:41the pilots.
- 44:41Like,
- 44:42that's
- 44:42stupid.
- 44:42One of the
- 44:43easiest
- 44:43ones to
- 44:43dismiss.
- 44:44Yeah,
- 44:44it is
- 44:45really dumb.
- 44:45And there's
- 44:46procedures
- 44:46in place.
- 44:47If they did
- 44:48have to
- 44:49tell
- 44:49something
- 44:50and we had
- 44:50to be
- 44:51exposed
- 44:51to it,
- 44:51or
- 44:52purposely
- 44:52or
- 44:52accidentally,
- 44:53right.
- 44:54There's,
- 44:54as you're
- 44:54aware,
- 44:55process of
- 44:55procedures
- 44:56if there's
- 44:56accidental
- 44:57spillage
- 44:57and things
- 44:57of that
- 44:58nature,
- 44:58which is
- 44:59exactly
- 44:59what
- 44:59that would
- 45:00be, right?
- 45:00Anyone
- 45:01who's
- 45:01operated
- 45:01around
- 45:02black
- 45:02programs
- 45:02at all
- 45:03knows that,
- 45:03like,
- 45:04you don't
- 45:04just stop
- 45:05being safe
- 45:06when you go
- 45:06into a
- 45:06black
- 45:06program.
- 45:07People
- 45:08that
- 45:08go into
- 45:08those
- 45:08programs
- 45:09are
- 45:09experienced,
- 45:10talented
- 45:10aviators
- 45:11and all
- 45:12the other
- 45:13support
- 45:13personnel.
- 45:13They go
- 45:14along
- 45:14with that.
- 45:15They don't
- 45:15just stop
- 45:16becoming
- 45:17safe,
- 45:17talented
- 45:17aviators
- 45:18and safe,
- 45:19talented
- 45:19professionals
- 45:20when they
- 45:21cross into
- 45:21that black
- 45:22program.
- 45:23Like those
- 45:25procedures,
- 45:26those
- 45:26techniques
- 45:26as
- 45:26policies,
- 45:27the
- 45:27airspace
- 45:28deconfliction
- 45:28like that
- 45:29all carries
- 45:29with that.
- 45:30I would
- 45:30suggest
- 45:30it's even
- 45:31more
- 45:31important
- 45:31because if
- 45:32you do
- 45:32any of
- 45:33those
- 45:33things
- 45:33wrong, it's
- 45:33going to
- 45:34bring
- 45:34attention
- 45:34to your
- 45:34program.
- 45:35To
- 45:35your program,
- 45:36and you're
- 45:36going
- 45:36to lose
- 45:36an asset
- 45:37that is
- 45:38probably
- 45:39one
- 45:39of a kind.
- 45:39And then
- 45:40ultimately
- 45:40maybe
- 45:41even
- 45:41shut down
- 45:41the whole thing,
- 45:42right,
- 45:42just
- 45:42because
- 45:43it's been
- 45:43revealed.
- 45:43So
- 45:44the think
- 45:44that
- 45:44we've
- 45:44been just
- 45:45testing
- 45:45stuff
- 45:45against
- 45:46ourselves
- 45:46over
- 45:46international
- 45:47waters
- 45:47for almost
- 45:48a decade
- 45:48now,
- 45:49obviously,
- 45:50it's hard
- 45:50to reason
- 45:50that that
- 45:51would
- 45:51be true.
- 45:52Yeah.
- 45:52And why
- 45:53test it
- 45:53with
- 45:53someone
- 45:53who's not
- 45:54paying
- 45:54attention?
- 45:55Because if
- 45:55you're
- 45:55testing,
- 45:55you need
- 45:56to get data
- 45:56from
- 45:56the test.
- 45:57You want
- 45:58the other person
- 45:59to
- 45:59be in on it
- 46:00so they can
- 46:00give you
- 46:01the data
- 46:01that
- 46:01they want.
- 46:02Anyone
- 46:02who's done
- 46:02a test
- 46:03program,
- 46:03those
- 46:03like, it's
- 46:04a cooperative
- 46:05effort,
- 46:05like, hey,
- 46:06there's
- 46:07engineers
- 46:07who say,
- 46:07these are
- 46:08the
- 46:08parameters
- 46:08I need.
- 46:09The test
- 46:09pilot
- 46:09builds a
- 46:10flight
- 46:10profile
- 46:11that goes out
- 46:11and tries
- 46:12to get
- 46:12the
- 46:12engineers
- 46:13the data
- 46:13that they
- 46:14need.
- 46:14So
- 46:14everyone's
- 46:15on board
- 46:15with it.
- 46:15They design
- 46:16the flight
- 46:16around
- 46:16that.
- 46:17It doesn't
- 46:18make sense
- 46:18to to
- 46:19just go
- 46:20willy
- 46:20nilly testing.
- 46:21And if it's
- 46:21another
- 46:22if it's
- 46:22an
- 46:22adversary
- 46:23nation,
- 46:23like,
- 46:24why would you
- 46:24go to
- 46:26park it.
- 46:26For the
- 46:27same logic,
- 46:27right?
- 46:28Same logic,
- 46:29expose a
- 46:29critical
- 46:30technology
- 46:31where it's
- 46:32extremely
- 46:32easy to
- 46:33potentially
- 46:33be
- 46:34recovered
- 46:34by your
- 46:34adversary,
- 46:35who then
- 46:35exploit
- 46:36that
- 46:36technology
- 46:36or minimize
- 46:37the
- 46:37advantage
- 46:38of gave
- 46:38you.
- 46:38Russia
- 46:39and China
- 46:39have vast
- 46:41swaths of
- 46:41unpopulated
- 46:42land
- 46:42they can go
- 46:43test over.
- 46:43And they do
- 46:44like
- 46:44why
- 46:45would they
- 46:45do it off
- 46:45the
- 46:45coast of
- 46:46Virginia
- 46:46Beach?
- 46:47It just
- 46:47doesn't
- 46:48make any
- 46:48sense.
- 46:49Everything
- 46:49points
- 46:50to like
- 46:50this is
- 46:51not
- 46:52something
- 46:52that anyone
- 46:53who thinks
- 46:54like a
- 46:54human
- 46:55and reasons
- 46:56like a
- 46:56human,
- 46:57especially
- 46:57reasons
- 46:58like an
- 46:58adversary
- 46:59or
- 47:00a military
- 47:00person
- 47:01would would
- 47:02think to
- 47:02do.
- 47:03Have you
- 47:03heard of
- 47:04any other,
- 47:05you know,
- 47:05just even
- 47:05if they're
- 47:06anecdotal
- 47:07stories
- 47:07from
- 47:07squadron
- 47:08mates
- 47:08or others
- 47:09that have
- 47:10seen things
- 47:10and
- 47:11I don't know
- 47:11if you were
- 47:12had any
- 47:13crossover
- 47:13with the
- 47:14he was
- 47:14the one
- 47:14in my right
- 47:15class.
- 47:15I don't know
- 47:16if you'd
- 47:16call him.
- 47:16He's
- 47:16the one
- 47:17that
- 47:17ejected off
- 47:17the front
- 47:18end. Yeah.
- 47:18He jumped
- 47:19out with
- 47:20the guy
- 47:20who was
- 47:20a former
- 47:21blue Angel.
- 47:21Yes. He.
- 47:22And then
- 47:22he went
- 47:23back to
- 47:23the blues
- 47:23after that.
- 47:24I think
- 47:24it was.
- 47:24Right off
- 47:25the water,
- 47:25I think.
- 47:26Yeah.
- 47:26Punched
- 47:27out.
- 47:27I think
- 47:27it was a
- 47:27name, I
- 47:28must say.
- 47:29I think
- 47:29it was.
- 47:31There
- 47:31he is.
- 47:31Yeah.
- 47:32I forget
- 47:32his call
- 47:32sign
- 47:33though.
- 47:33What was it?
- 47:34But his
- 47:34seat.
- 47:34He's a
- 47:35public.
- 47:35It's fine
- 47:36because.
- 47:36He skipped
- 47:37off
- 47:37the water
- 47:37from what
- 47:38I hear.
- 47:38Because
- 47:38when.
- 47:38They were
- 47:39very well.
- 47:39Yeah,
- 47:39they got
- 47:40ferry
- 47:40lucky.
- 47:40That was a
- 47:41week after.
- 47:41I left.
- 47:42Yeah.
- 47:42Did
- 47:42they suck
- 47:43like the
- 47:43rubber from
- 47:44the cat?
- 47:44It was.
- 47:45Yeah,
- 47:45it was fun.
- 47:46Just in
- 47:46from some
- 47:47component
- 47:47of the cat.
- 47:48Like one of
- 47:48the covered
- 47:49or
- 47:49something.
- 47:49Off the
- 47:49left
- 47:50engine.
- 47:50And then
- 47:50they turned
- 47:51left and
- 47:52had
- 47:52adverse.
- 47:53Your
- 47:53departure.
- 47:53Yeah.
- 47:54Yeah,
- 47:54that was
- 47:54rough
- 47:55stuff.
- 47:56Had his
- 47:56own
- 47:56experience
- 47:57at test
- 47:58pilot
- 47:58school.
- 47:58Really?
- 47:59Within
- 48:00about 50ft
- 48:00of his
- 48:00cockpit
- 48:01coming
- 48:01up to
- 48:01his
- 48:02cockpit,
- 48:02hanging out
- 48:02about 50ft
- 48:03and
- 48:04basically
- 48:05locking in
- 48:05that
- 48:05position
- 48:06as he were.
- 48:07That's
- 48:07wild.
- 48:08Shooting
- 48:08off
- 48:08the open
- 48:09will
- 48:09get him on
- 48:09here soon.
- 48:10Yeah.
- 48:10When he
- 48:10comes
- 48:10down, let's
- 48:11go get
- 48:11beers.
- 48:12Yes, I
- 48:12look
- 48:13forward to
- 48:13that.
- 48:13It's
- 48:13not a lot.
- 48:14There's
- 48:14only two of
- 48:14us down
- 48:15here.
- 48:15I know it's
- 48:15a great place
- 48:16to be
- 48:16if
- 48:16you're at
- 48:17a team
- 48:17pilot
- 48:17or really
- 48:18anyone.
- 48:18So I.
- 48:19I'm loving
- 48:19Austin.
- 48:21Not this
- 48:21Austin by
- 48:22the town.
- 48:22You're
- 48:22pretty cool
- 48:23to do this.
- 48:23Thanks, I.
- 48:24Appreciate
- 48:24it.
- 48:24I can't
- 48:25imagine
- 48:25the pain.
- 48:25It must
- 48:26be to
- 48:26have
- 48:27the name
- 48:27Austin
- 48:27in this town.
- 48:28But
- 48:28we don't
- 48:28have to
- 48:29go into
- 48:29every
- 48:29datasource.
- 48:30What awful.
- 48:32Wait, what
- 48:33do you
- 48:33think?
- 48:34You know,
- 48:34kind of
- 48:34wrap it up
- 48:35here.
- 48:35You know,
- 48:36there's
- 48:37a lot
- 48:37going on.
- 48:38You know,
- 48:38we've just
- 48:38had these.
- 48:39This
- 48:39Department
- 48:40of War
- 48:40release of
- 48:40information.
- 48:41Some people
- 48:42are saying.
- 48:43Many people
- 48:43are saying
- 48:44it's the
- 48:44beginning
- 48:45of perhaps
- 48:45a
- 48:45disclosure
- 48:46process.
- 48:46And that's
- 48:47what I
- 48:47hear as
- 48:48well, that,
- 48:48you know,
- 48:48we're
- 48:49expecting
- 48:49different
- 48:49charges
- 48:50of
- 48:50information.
- 48:51Perhaps if
- 48:52what is
- 48:53said
- 48:53is true,
- 48:54that they
- 48:55might get
- 48:55increasingly
- 48:56compelling.
- 48:57And that's
- 48:57based off
- 48:58of
- 48:58commentary
- 48:59from
- 48:59Congress,
- 49:00people
- 49:00who
- 49:00apparently
- 49:01have seen
- 49:01the larger
- 49:02trove
- 49:02and are
- 49:03even making
- 49:04pretty
- 49:04aggressive
- 49:05statements
- 49:05about
- 49:06invoking
- 49:06certain
- 49:06privileges
- 49:07they have
- 49:07as
- 49:07congresspeople
- 49:08in order
- 49:08to release
- 49:09that
- 49:09information.
- 49:10If
- 49:10the president
- 49:10doesn't,
- 49:11it sounds
- 49:12like,
- 49:12you know,
- 49:12it
- 49:12feels like
- 49:13things
- 49:13are
- 49:14earnestly
- 49:14heating up
- 49:15right now.
- 49:15Asa,
- 49:16I think,
- 49:16is living
- 49:17already in
- 49:17that future
- 49:18in a lot
- 49:18of ways.
- 49:19Americans
- 49:19say Faro
- 49:20space
- 49:20because,
- 49:21you know,
- 49:22it's
- 49:22not about
- 49:23ultimately
- 49:24joining
- 49:24the
- 49:24conversation
- 49:25to debate
- 49:25any one
- 49:26photo.
- 49:26But,
- 49:27you know,
- 49:27how do we
- 49:27deal
- 49:27with the
- 49:28the operational
- 49:29implications
- 49:31of this
- 49:31reality
- 49:32that
- 49:32we've been
- 49:32talking
- 49:33about?
- 49:33How do we
- 49:34properly
- 49:34educate
- 49:35and inform
- 49:36pilots of
- 49:36these
- 49:36events
- 49:37in a
- 49:37timely manner,
- 49:38so that
- 49:38they can
- 49:38incorporate
- 49:39that
- 49:39into their
- 49:40situational
- 49:40awareness?
- 49:41How do we
- 49:41highlight
- 49:43hot areas
- 49:44or areas
- 49:45where
- 49:45there's
- 49:46more
- 49:46consistent
- 49:47sightings,
- 49:48so that
- 49:48we can
- 49:48ensure
- 49:49the proper
- 49:49communications
- 49:50are in
- 49:50place?
- 49:50What are the
- 49:51proper
- 49:51communications?
- 49:52What are the procedures
- 49:53and
- 49:53how are
- 49:54they
- 49:54educated
- 49:54across
- 49:55pilots?
- 49:55You know,
- 49:56that's
- 49:56that's
- 49:56a lot of
- 49:56the work
- 49:57we're doing.
- 49:57But I'm
- 49:57curious,
- 49:58you know,
- 49:58just
- 49:59broadly
- 49:59speaking,
- 50:00I mean,
- 50:00where
- 50:00do you think
- 50:01this all
- 50:01goes?
- 50:02You know,
- 50:02from from
- 50:03where
- 50:03we are
- 50:03today?
- 50:04I think
- 50:04the biggest
- 50:05challenge
- 50:05with
- 50:07the
- 50:07disclosure
- 50:08is that
- 50:10humans
- 50:10are not
- 50:11very good
- 50:11at
- 50:13being out
- 50:13of control
- 50:14and having
- 50:15uncertainty.
- 50:16Right.
- 50:16If and then
- 50:17the
- 50:17American
- 50:18public,
- 50:18you know,
- 50:19we're used
- 50:20to this.
- 50:21I want it
- 50:21now.
- 50:22Give it to me
- 50:22now.
- 50:23You know,
- 50:23I voted for
- 50:24this
- 50:24person.
- 50:25They promise
- 50:25this and
- 50:26I want it
- 50:26right now.
- 50:27If they're
- 50:27not
- 50:27doing it
- 50:27right now,
- 50:28like I'm
- 50:28angry.
- 50:28And
- 50:29if you find out
- 50:29that
- 50:29there's,
- 50:30you know,
- 50:30if we
- 50:31reveal
- 50:31that
- 50:31there's
- 50:31extraterrestrial
- 50:32life and
- 50:33non-human
- 50:33intelligence,
- 50:34what are we going
- 50:35to do about it?
- 50:35What do you want
- 50:36me to do
- 50:36about it?
- 50:37Right.
- 50:37Like,
- 50:37these
- 50:37things
- 50:38are so much
- 50:38more
- 50:39advanced
- 50:39than us.
- 50:39Like,
- 50:40people are
- 50:40going
- 50:41to have
- 50:41to get
- 50:41comfortable
- 50:41with
- 50:41the fact
- 50:42that
- 50:42there's
- 50:42nothing
- 50:42we can do
- 50:43about it.
- 50:44And that's
- 50:44a scary
- 50:45thing,
- 50:45I think,
- 50:45for most
- 50:46people.
- 50:46Right.
- 50:46Seeding
- 50:47somebody?
- 50:47Yeah.
- 50:48Seeing
- 50:48control,
- 50:49especially
- 50:49when you
- 50:50demand
- 50:51certainty,
- 50:51when people
- 50:52demand
- 50:52certainty
- 50:53and kind
- 50:53of like
- 50:54an immature
- 50:54way. Right.
- 50:55Like modern
- 50:57life is
- 50:59generally
- 51:00giving
- 51:00people
- 51:01what they
- 51:01want,
- 51:01the comforts
- 51:02they want,
- 51:02the
- 51:02entertainment
- 51:03that they
- 51:03want.
- 51:04People
- 51:04are just
- 51:04becoming
- 51:05used
- 51:05to that.
- 51:05And
- 51:06they're not
- 51:06used to
- 51:07the fact
- 51:07that, like,
- 51:07there's
- 51:08a lot
- 51:08of things
- 51:08that are
- 51:08out of
- 51:09your control.
- 51:09I think
- 51:10when
- 51:11this is
- 51:11revealed,
- 51:12I mean,
- 51:12it's
- 51:12already
- 51:12I mean,
- 51:13we already know
- 51:13that
- 51:14these things
- 51:14exist.
- 51:15But I think
- 51:15when people
- 51:15know that
- 51:16there's
- 51:16someone
- 51:16else,
- 51:17something else
- 51:18that's
- 51:18driving
- 51:18them,
- 51:20that's
- 51:20going to be
- 51:21a
- 51:21tough pill
- 51:21to swallow,
- 51:22and they're
- 51:22going to
- 51:22make
- 51:22demands
- 51:23that most
- 51:23politicians
- 51:24can't meet.
- 51:24And I think
- 51:25that's a
- 51:25hard
- 51:25message
- 51:25to tell
- 51:26people,
- 51:26right.
- 51:26Like,
- 51:28what do you do
- 51:28if you're the president
- 51:30and
- 51:30you say,
- 51:31all right,
- 51:31there are
- 51:32we have
- 51:33recovered
- 51:33beings of,
- 51:35you know,
- 51:36extraterrestrial
- 51:36origin.
- 51:37There
- 51:38is life
- 51:38among us.
- 51:39We have communicated
- 51:40with some
- 51:40of these.
- 51:41Here's,
- 51:42you know,
- 51:42before we
- 51:43even talk
- 51:43about what
- 51:43the things
- 51:44that
- 51:44they've
- 51:44communicated,
- 51:45or at least
- 51:45the rumors,
- 51:46how do you
- 51:46deliver
- 51:46that
- 51:46message
- 51:47and expect
- 51:48people
- 51:48not to
- 51:48demand
- 51:49something
- 51:49that is
- 51:50completely
- 51:50unreasonable?
- 51:52And that's
- 51:52a party
- 51:53political
- 51:54agnostic,
- 51:55no matter
- 51:55who the,
- 51:56you know,
- 51:56the best
- 51:56person in
- 51:57the office,
- 51:57whoever
- 51:58you think
- 51:58the best
- 51:58president
- 51:59is,
- 51:59probably
- 52:00is going to
- 52:00fumble that
- 52:01or mess
- 52:01that up.
- 52:01It's not
- 52:02going to
- 52:02be perfect.
- 52:02Yeah,
- 52:03it's it's
- 52:03fundamentally
- 52:04probably
- 52:04the most
- 52:05consequential
- 52:07piece
- 52:07of
- 52:07information
- 52:08to the
- 52:09human
- 52:10experience
- 52:12as a
- 52:12species
- 52:13that
- 52:13for our
- 52:13entire
- 52:13existence,
- 52:14we
- 52:14have been
- 52:15the only
- 52:17thing in
- 52:18the
- 52:18universe.
- 52:19And
- 52:19then now
- 52:20we are
- 52:20confirmed
- 52:21that
- 52:21we are not.
- 52:21And not
- 52:22only are
- 52:22we not
- 52:22the only
- 52:23thing in
- 52:23the universe,
- 52:24we are not
- 52:25the top
- 52:25of the food
- 52:25pyramid.
- 52:26It's easy
- 52:27to say
- 52:27like, hey,
- 52:27we found
- 52:28life on
- 52:28other
- 52:28planet.
- 52:29It's like
- 52:29a bacteria.
- 52:30It's a
- 52:30little like
- 52:31it
- 52:31looks
- 52:31like a
- 52:32Chihuahua
- 52:33or.
- 52:33200,000
- 52:34light years
- 52:34away.
- 52:34It's
- 52:35100,000
- 52:35light
- 52:35years away.
- 52:36And it's
- 52:36a
- 52:36Chihuahua.
- 52:37Yeah.
- 52:37Okay, cool.
- 52:38Yeah.
- 52:38That's
- 52:38neat.
- 52:39That's
- 52:39safe.
- 52:39But it's
- 52:40like, no,
- 52:41they're
- 52:41actually
- 52:41in our oceans,
- 52:42or they're
- 52:42flying
- 52:42around
- 52:43their way
- 52:43smarter than us.
- 52:45And if you
- 52:46touch them,
- 52:46you'll die.
- 52:47That's
- 52:47a different
- 52:48that's a
- 52:48different
- 52:49realization.
- 52:50Yeah.
- 52:50It's a
- 52:50different
- 52:51type of
- 52:52Copernican
- 52:54realization
- 52:54I suppose.
- 52:55Right.
- 52:55Yeah.
- 52:56Like is
- 52:56the human
- 52:57psyche
- 52:57ready
- 52:57for that?
- 52:58Like,
- 52:58are you going
- 52:58to have
- 52:59these,
- 52:59you know,
- 52:59the people
- 53:00that commit
- 53:00suicide
- 53:00when the comets
- 53:01come, like
- 53:01there's
- 53:02every
- 53:03decade
- 53:03there's
- 53:04some sect,
- 53:05you know,
- 53:05there's
- 53:05some cult
- 53:06that goes
- 53:07and offs
- 53:07itself
- 53:07because of
- 53:08some comet
- 53:09or
- 53:09something.
- 53:09And
- 53:10you know
- 53:10what's
- 53:11going to be
- 53:11the
- 53:11reaction
- 53:12to people
- 53:12on the
- 53:12spiritual
- 53:13level, on a
- 53:15political
- 53:16level,
- 53:16on a social
- 53:17unrest
- 53:17level,
- 53:18or people
- 53:18are going
- 53:18to be like,
- 53:18well,
- 53:19fuck it,
- 53:19nothing
- 53:19matters.
- 53:19Let me
- 53:20just go
- 53:20riot or,
- 53:21you know.
- 53:22Well,
- 53:23you know,
- 53:23I think,
- 53:24I think
- 53:24the
- 53:24majority
- 53:24of us are
- 53:25too lazy
- 53:25because
- 53:26it's,
- 53:26you know,
- 53:27it's easy
- 53:27to riot
- 53:27when
- 53:28there's
- 53:28something
- 53:28to riot
- 53:28against.
- 53:29But
- 53:29this might
- 53:29be a little
- 53:30more harder
- 53:30for people
- 53:31to kind of
- 53:31grasp
- 53:32what to be
- 53:32angry
- 53:33about.
- 53:33I think
- 53:34there will
- 53:34be so many
- 53:35general
- 53:35anxiety,
- 53:36but
- 53:36it'll be
- 53:36interesting
- 53:37to see.
- 53:38But at
- 53:38the end
- 53:38of the day,
- 53:38people
- 53:39always like
- 53:39to say,
- 53:40you know,
- 53:40people are,
- 53:41you know,
- 53:41just going
- 53:42to go back
- 53:42to doing
- 53:42the things.
- 53:43But
- 53:43the food on
- 53:44the plate,
- 53:44you know,
- 53:45that's
- 53:45within,
- 53:45you know,
- 53:46their
- 53:46ability
- 53:46to grasp
- 53:47and truly
- 53:47understand
- 53:48it in
- 53:48action.
- 53:49But I think
- 53:50we're in
- 53:50a position
- 53:51where,
- 53:52you know,
- 53:52instead of
- 53:52the
- 53:53speculation
- 53:53for decades
- 53:54about
- 53:54whether,
- 53:55you know,
- 53:55what what
- 53:56that
- 53:56might be like.
- 53:57I think,
- 53:57you know,
- 53:58we'll just
- 53:58have to
- 53:58kind of
- 53:58sit tight
- 53:59for
- 53:59the next
- 54:00few months
- 54:00or a
- 54:01couple of years
- 54:01and see how
- 54:02things
- 54:02unfold.
- 54:03Yeah,
- 54:03I think
- 54:04the real
- 54:04revelation
- 54:04is when
- 54:06people
- 54:06start
- 54:06talking
- 54:07about,
- 54:08you know,
- 54:08oh, it's
- 54:09one thing
- 54:09to say, oh,
- 54:09we
- 54:09recovered
- 54:10a craft
- 54:11or body
- 54:12dead, dead
- 54:12aliens.
- 54:13Like,
- 54:13okay, cool.
- 54:14Well,
- 54:14what about,
- 54:15you know,
- 54:15you've
- 54:15heard
- 54:16the rumors
- 54:16of people
- 54:17who've
- 54:18actually
- 54:18talked to
- 54:18the aliens,
- 54:19like, well,
- 54:19are
- 54:19you going
- 54:20to.
- 54:20Are you
- 54:20going to
- 54:21tell me
- 54:21what
- 54:22you guys
- 54:22talked
- 54:22about?
- 54:22Like,
- 54:23what
- 54:23did you
- 54:23talk about?
- 54:24What's
- 54:24so important
- 54:25that
- 54:25you've hid
- 54:25from us?
- 54:26You know,
- 54:26as people
- 54:26have
- 54:27become more
- 54:27acclimated
- 54:28to into
- 54:30the fact
- 54:30that there
- 54:30are objects
- 54:31that are
- 54:32operating
- 54:32her spaces,
- 54:33you know,
- 54:34I'll
- 54:34leave it
- 54:34to perhaps
- 54:35people
- 54:35better
- 54:36qualified
- 54:36to really
- 54:37delve into
- 54:38what that
- 54:39really
- 54:39means,
- 54:40you know,
- 54:40from
- 54:40all these
- 54:41different
- 54:41angles,
- 54:42you know,
- 54:43philosophically
- 54:44and for
- 54:44religion
- 54:45and
- 54:45everything
- 54:46else,
- 54:46it will
- 54:46likely
- 54:47affect
- 54:47many
- 54:47things.
- 54:48But,
- 54:48you know,
- 54:49as a pilot,
- 54:50you know,
- 54:51what does
- 54:51this
- 54:51look like?
- 54:52What can we
- 54:52learn from
- 54:53these things?
- 54:53Where does
- 54:54this
- 54:54conversation
- 54:55go in
- 54:55that
- 54:55regard?
- 54:56As as
- 54:56more people
- 54:57become
- 54:57interested
- 54:58in
- 54:58understanding
- 54:59this,
- 54:59instead
- 54:59of it
- 54:59being
- 55:00a somewhat
- 55:00constrained
- 55:01effort
- 55:02with
- 55:02the fact
- 55:02that this
- 55:03has been
- 55:03such a
- 55:04stigmatized
- 55:05topic
- 55:06for so
- 55:06long.
- 55:07When
- 55:07this disclosure
- 55:08does
- 55:08come out,
- 55:09I think
- 55:09one of
- 55:10the
- 55:10opportunities
- 55:11we have as
- 55:12Americans
- 55:12is how
- 55:13do we
- 55:13take the
- 55:14leadership
- 55:14on
- 55:16all right,
- 55:16we know
- 55:16that these
- 55:17things are
- 55:17flying
- 55:17around.
- 55:18How
- 55:19do we work
- 55:19with other
- 55:20nations,
- 55:21even
- 55:21adversarial
- 55:22nations,
- 55:22to make
- 55:23sure that
- 55:24skies
- 55:24are safer,
- 55:25that
- 55:25we can see
- 55:25these
- 55:26things?
- 55:26You know,
- 55:26what
- 55:26have we
- 55:27recovered?
- 55:27Have we done
- 55:28test to
- 55:29see if
- 55:29there
- 55:30you know,
- 55:30how does
- 55:31radar
- 55:31reflect
- 55:32against them?
- 55:32How do we detect
- 55:33these things?
- 55:34How
- 55:34do we track them?
- 55:35If
- 55:35we do have
- 55:36a sighting,
- 55:37how can we
- 55:37put that
- 55:37into the
- 55:38aerospace system
- 55:40so that
- 55:40controllers
- 55:41can see
- 55:41that
- 55:41there's
- 55:41something
- 55:42in the air
- 55:43over here
- 55:43that is
- 55:44unidentified,
- 55:45even
- 55:45if it's
- 55:45not radar
- 55:46or
- 55:46reflective,
- 55:47how do we
- 55:48cooperate
- 55:49across
- 55:49agencies to
- 55:51make sure
- 55:51that,
- 55:52you know,
- 55:53people
- 55:53are aware
- 55:54that these
- 55:55things
- 55:55are out
- 55:55there?
- 55:56Yeah,
- 55:56we can't
- 55:56control them,
- 55:57but
- 55:57at least
- 55:57we know to
- 55:58avoid them.
- 55:59Then when
- 55:59we do that,
- 56:00we also get
- 56:00more
- 56:00information
- 56:01about
- 56:01perhaps
- 56:02where
- 56:02they're
- 56:02operating
- 56:03that can
- 56:04lead us
- 56:04to intent
- 56:05potentially,
- 56:06or
- 56:06capability
- 56:07understanding.
- 56:08Or least
- 56:08we know
- 56:08where to
- 56:09put more
- 56:09sensors.
- 56:09Right.
- 56:10If we know
- 56:10that
- 56:10there's
- 56:11a lot
- 56:11of
- 56:11sightings,
- 56:12let's
- 56:12say off
- 56:12the coast
- 56:12of
- 56:12Virginia,
- 56:13well, maybe
- 56:14we put
- 56:14some,
- 56:15you know,
- 56:16some Sam
- 56:17radar
- 56:17down there,
- 56:18some
- 56:18surface to
- 56:18air radar
- 56:19that's
- 56:19going to
- 56:20be looking
- 56:20in
- 56:21particular
- 56:21points of
- 56:21the sky
- 56:22where
- 56:22people keep
- 56:22seeing
- 56:23these.
- 56:23And let's
- 56:24start
- 56:24building
- 56:24a data
- 56:25set on
- 56:26where
- 56:26we're
- 56:26seeing
- 56:27this stuff.
- 56:27Like what
- 56:28can
- 56:28we learn
- 56:28from how to
- 56:29detect them
- 56:29to make
- 56:30this, to
- 56:31scale
- 56:31this out,
- 56:31not only
- 56:32within
- 56:33Conus but
- 56:34beyond
- 56:34our borders?
- 56:35How can we
- 56:35share this
- 56:35with,
- 56:36you know,
- 56:36Russia
- 56:37or China
- 56:37or like
- 56:38even
- 56:38adversaries
- 56:39to say
- 56:39like, hey,
- 56:39guys, like,
- 56:40I know
- 56:41we don't
- 56:41always
- 56:41get along
- 56:42the
- 56:43lives of
- 56:44yeah, yeah,
- 56:44the lives
- 56:45of your
- 56:45citizens
- 56:45matters
- 56:46to you,
- 56:47just like
- 56:47ours
- 56:47matters
- 56:48to us.
- 56:48And
- 56:49we want to
- 56:50share
- 56:50with you
- 56:51this
- 56:51information
- 56:52or like,
- 56:52these
- 56:52things are
- 56:53operating
- 56:53from here.
- 56:53And I think
- 56:54that,
- 56:54you know,
- 56:54that
- 56:55could be
- 56:55a good
- 56:55leadership
- 56:56position
- 56:56from this
- 56:57country
- 56:57to take.
- 56:58It'd
- 56:58be nice
- 56:58if that happens
- 56:59to say,
- 57:00like,
- 57:00hey, let's
- 57:01figure out
- 57:01a way to
- 57:04make
- 57:04people
- 57:04feel
- 57:05safe
- 57:05in this
- 57:06incredibly
- 57:07like
- 57:08unnerving,
- 57:09unsettling
- 57:11realization
- 57:12that
- 57:12there's
- 57:12other
- 57:13things
- 57:14flying
- 57:14around
- 57:14in our
- 57:14airspace.
- 57:15There's
- 57:15other things
- 57:16that are
- 57:16flying over
- 57:17our cities,
- 57:17that are
- 57:17flying over
- 57:18our waters,
- 57:19flying near
- 57:20our
- 57:20aircraft.
- 57:20How do we
- 57:21prevent
- 57:21someone
- 57:22from
- 57:22shooting
- 57:22one of
- 57:22these
- 57:22things
- 57:23and causing
- 57:23some
- 57:24sort of
- 57:25conflict?
- 57:26Well,
- 57:27do you think
- 57:27that your
- 57:28balloon
- 57:28company
- 57:29could play
- 57:29a role?
- 57:29I mean,
- 57:30I think
- 57:30it's a
- 57:31pretty
- 57:31unexplored
- 57:31area to
- 57:32have
- 57:32sensors
- 57:33at the
- 57:33altitudes
- 57:33that those
- 57:34balloons
- 57:34operate.
- 57:35Perhaps
- 57:35looking
- 57:35down,
- 57:37perhaps
- 57:38tether
- 57:38them up
- 57:38over
- 57:39hotspots
- 57:39and be able
- 57:40to modern
- 57:41area for
- 57:41several
- 57:42months,
- 57:42perhaps.
- 57:43Yeah.
- 57:43I mean,
- 57:43tethering
- 57:44a balloon
- 57:44at 80,000ft
- 57:46is that's
- 57:47one of our
- 57:47long term
- 57:48goals.
- 57:50You know,
- 57:50when
- 57:50you run
- 57:50fiber
- 57:50optic up
- 57:51that
- 57:51tether,
- 57:52you can put
- 57:52some
- 57:52you can get
- 57:53some
- 57:53great data
- 57:54transfer
- 57:54down
- 57:54from there.
- 57:55And
- 57:55when you're
- 57:55looking
- 57:55at a system
- 57:56that's up
- 57:56at
- 57:5680,000ft,
- 57:57it's at
- 57:58less
- 57:58than 10%
- 57:59atmospheric density.
- 58:00So
- 58:00the range of
- 58:01those
- 58:01radars
- 58:02is going to
- 58:02be much
- 58:03longer
- 58:04because
- 58:04you're not
- 58:04getting
- 58:05the signal
- 58:05attenuation
- 58:06through the
- 58:06atmosphere,
- 58:06you're
- 58:06going to
- 58:07get much
- 58:07higher
- 58:07resolution.
- 58:09You're
- 58:09hopefully
- 58:09going
- 58:09to be
- 58:10detecting
- 58:10some of
- 58:10these
- 58:10things
- 58:11that are
- 58:11transiting
- 58:11the atmosphere
- 58:13early
- 58:13before they
- 58:13get down
- 58:14low.
- 58:14And maybe
- 58:14you can
- 58:15share
- 58:15that
- 58:15information
- 58:16with radar
- 58:17systems,
- 58:18other
- 58:19detection
- 58:19equipment
- 58:20that's down
- 58:20at the
- 58:20terrestrial
- 58:21level
- 58:22to kind of
- 58:23have a nice
- 58:23handoff
- 58:24between
- 58:24these scenes.
- 58:25But I think
- 58:26the most
- 58:26important
- 58:27thing is
- 58:27how do
- 58:27we get more
- 58:27data
- 58:28on them?
- 58:28How do we figure
- 58:29out how
- 58:29to detect
- 58:29these
- 58:30things?
- 58:30You know,
- 58:31you know,
- 58:31and there's
- 58:31probably
- 58:32multiple
- 58:32different
- 58:33types.
- 58:33Right.
- 58:33So
- 58:34you know,
- 58:35just
- 58:35because you
- 58:35can detect
- 58:36one doesn't
- 58:36mean you
- 58:37can't.
- 58:37You know,
- 58:37you can
- 58:38detect
- 58:38all of the
- 58:38different
- 58:39types
- 58:39that we've
- 58:40seen.
- 58:40You know,
- 58:40people talk
- 58:40about the
- 58:41Tic-Tac or,
- 58:42you know,
- 58:43flying
- 58:43saucers,
- 58:44whatever
- 58:44the shape is
- 58:45like,
- 58:45how do we find them?
- 58:46And they're
- 58:46gonna have
- 58:47different
- 58:47signal
- 58:48signal
- 58:48profiles
- 58:48for sure.
- 58:49What's
- 58:49what's the
- 58:50name of the
- 58:50company
- 58:50again?
- 58:51Is there
- 58:51a place
- 58:51people
- 58:51can check.
- 58:52It out?
- 58:53Is the name
- 58:53Carradine
- 58:54Dot
- 58:54systems?
- 58:54We
- 58:54don't have
- 58:55a very
- 58:55good
- 58:55website.
- 58:56No.
- 58:56Did
- 58:56very well
- 58:57because
- 58:57you're
- 58:58too busy
- 58:58doing
- 58:58the actual
- 58:58engineering
- 58:59building,
- 59:00I get.
- 59:00It, doing
- 59:00the
- 59:01building
- 59:01stuff.
- 59:01Awesome.
- 59:02Well,
- 59:02awesome.
- 59:02Thanks for
- 59:03joining us
- 59:03today.
- 59:04This was
- 59:04fascinating.
- 59:05You know,
- 59:06I'm not
- 59:06sure
- 59:06exactly
- 59:07when this
- 59:07is going to
- 59:08air, but,
- 59:08you know,
- 59:08we've
- 59:09uncovered
- 59:09some
- 59:09interesting
- 59:10information
- 59:11about
- 59:12the time
- 59:13frame
- 59:13around
- 59:13the Chinese
- 59:14by balloons
- 59:14and other
- 59:15objects
- 59:15that were
- 59:16operating
- 59:16in
- 59:17exhibiting
- 59:17some pretty
- 59:18interesting
- 59:18performance
- 59:19characteristics.
- 59:19So we'll
- 59:20have to get
- 59:20you tuned
- 59:21into that
- 59:21one so
- 59:22you can
- 59:22give your
- 59:22opinion
- 59:23on it.
- 59:23Thank you
- 59:24for
- 59:24watching
- 59:25the Safe
- 59:25Airspace
- 59:25podcast.
- 59:27We'll be
- 59:27having
- 59:27Orson
- 59:28on soon
- 59:28for an AMA.
- 59:29So if
- 59:29you're a
- 59:29member,
- 59:30please
- 59:30keep a
- 59:31lookout
- 59:31for our
- 59:32messaging
- 59:32on that
- 59:33and we can
- 59:33get them
