• 0:52
  Speaker 2: on Let's talk.
• 0:54
Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen today, I have to say that,
• 0:59
Speaker 3: and I hate to give credit, but said there is
• 1:02
Speaker 3: credit due. I have at least the O D and
• 1:06
Speaker 3: Halli Lewis, my normal co host building and I have
• 1:10
  Speaker 3: I think, I think a friend of mine that I
• 1:15
Speaker 3: used to play against a couple of times a year,
• 1:18
Speaker 3: by the name Sterling.
• 1:26
Speaker 4: I'm not done. I'm not done. I'm not done yet
• 1:31
Speaker 4: that it is not see, we can't even get the
• 1:33
  Speaker 4: show start.
• 1:36
Speaker 3: Okay, So he just recently, just the other day, he
• 1:42
Speaker 3: was he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and
• 1:46
Speaker 3: I had the privilege to to be there, me and
• 1:50
Speaker 3: my son, we were able to be there by his invite.
• 1:53
Speaker 3: And uh, he actually has his gold jackets so that
• 1:58
Speaker 3: we could actually see it, touch it and only imagine
• 2:01
Speaker 3: what it's like. And and he is putting it on now.
• 2:11
Speaker 4: Everybody knows that he's got it on. So I said
• 2:17
  Speaker 4: that earlier.
• 2:17
Speaker 5: Try so for him to be a gentleman and let
• 2:21
Speaker 5: me wear the jock.
• 2:22
  Speaker 1: I'm chilled.
• 2:23
Speaker 3: I'm going to because I don't want to start with
• 2:26
Speaker 3: the first question because I already know.
• 2:28
Speaker 4: So I'm gonna let Lisa or Hollis Lisa.
• 2:31
Speaker 3: I'm going to start with Lisa that she's a Packer
• 2:33
Speaker 3: fan unfortunately, and she has the cheese head.
• 2:38
Speaker 4: She brought a cheese head.
• 2:39
Speaker 5: In cheese head because I was so excited to have
• 2:41
Speaker 5: Sterling on this show. Yes, well, okay, so I get
• 2:44
  Speaker 5: the first question.
• 2:45
  Speaker 6: Their question.
• 2:46
Speaker 5: Well, first of all, Sterling, thank you so much for
• 2:48
Speaker 5: being on our podcast. Carl tried to pull this you know,
• 2:52
Speaker 5: surprise birthday party stuff on Hollis and I said, well,
• 2:55
Speaker 5: I suggested, we'd already talked about Sterling having like a
• 2:59
Speaker 5: tribute type of podcast tonight in honor of you being inducted,
• 3:02
Speaker 5: you know, into the profit by Hall of Fame. And
• 3:07
Speaker 5: so I said, well, maybe he could call in again,
• 3:09
Speaker 5: you know, and he left us hanging.
• 3:11
  Speaker 4: And then this.
• 3:11
Speaker 5: Morning I asked Hollis and said, did you know he
• 3:14
Speaker 5: sent us this text like, well, actually he's going to
• 3:16
Speaker 5: be in the studio And I was like what, So
• 3:19
Speaker 5: I was like it was so exciting. But but anyway,
• 3:22
Speaker 5: so I'm going to go back, Sterling to the speech
• 3:25
Speaker 5: that you gave at the Pro Football Hof ceremony, and
• 3:30
Speaker 5: part of it when you were speaking about you and
• 3:33
Speaker 5: Shannon and your early life experiences in rural South Georgia.
• 3:38
Speaker 5: And one of the things that intrigued me that you
• 3:40
Speaker 5: stated was at a young age that you and Shannon
• 3:43
Speaker 5: really didn't have a whole lot of male figures or
• 3:46
Speaker 5: role models in your life. You were you were basically
• 3:48
Speaker 5: raised by these strong women, you know, part of your
• 3:52
Speaker 5: that that are in your family. How did how did
• 3:54
Speaker 5: that guide your career in football and in your outlook
• 3:57
Speaker 5: on life in general.
• 3:59
Speaker 7: Well, the biggest thing is we had tremendous role models
• 4:04
Speaker 7: that were farmers. We had tremendous role models that were
• 4:07
Speaker 7: deacon at our church. But if you were an athlete,
• 4:12
Speaker 7: you're trying to look and find someone that you know
• 4:17
Speaker 7: you might want to want to try to be like.
• 4:18
Speaker 7: But you know, growing up on the farm, we never
• 4:21
Speaker 7: had that. And so for me wanting to be a
• 4:24
Speaker 7: football player of my entire life, I wanted to be
• 4:29
Speaker 7: sure because I wanted him to look at me as
• 4:34
Speaker 7: that I didn't know what he was going to be
• 4:36
Speaker 7: or what he was going to do, but I do
• 4:38
Speaker 7: know I wanted to be his everything. And so that
• 4:43
Speaker 7: was what part of my motivation was for my speech,
• 4:47
Speaker 7: which I came up with about fifteen minutes before.
• 4:51
Speaker 4: I assume that too, I did.
• 4:55
Speaker 7: And also, my brother has been adamant about saying that
• 4:59
Speaker 7: my journey to the Pro Football Hall of Fame was
• 5:02
Speaker 7: harder than his because.
• 5:04
  Speaker 6: I was first.
• 5:06
Speaker 7: You know, when you're first, people may not understand your
• 5:13
Speaker 7: outlook on where you want to be and what you
• 5:16
Speaker 7: want to do with this. So there's hard and I'm
• 5:19
Speaker 7: going to say not a lot of support. You know,
• 5:22
Speaker 7: my family was like, oh, you got a game, okay,
• 5:25
Speaker 7: Whereas when my brother had a game, they were there.
• 5:28
Speaker 7: So you know, you have to understand. And my thing was,
• 5:34
  Speaker 7: and I think I've said this a million times, I
• 5:38
Speaker 7: was my own standard, so I never failed. And so
• 5:41
Speaker 7: Shannon was like, Bro, you didn't have anybody in front
• 5:44
Speaker 7: of you. I knew because you did it, I could
• 5:47
Speaker 7: do it because that's how we grew up. So it
• 5:51
Speaker 7: was just one of those things that I wanted to
• 5:54
Speaker 7: say to reiterate that everything I did athletically I did
• 5:58
  Speaker 7: to impress him.
• 6:00
Speaker 8: Yeah, like I said, again, congratulations. We first met again
• 6:05
Speaker 8: while I was a senior in high school and I
• 6:06
Speaker 8: was at a West Virginia State spring practice where I
• 6:09
Speaker 8: went to school. At at practice, you told me some things.
• 6:12
Speaker 8: We'll talk about that all that I should have listened to,
• 6:16
Speaker 8: but I didn't. So just coming from those you know,
• 6:21
Speaker 8: humble beginnings and making that transition to obviously being a
• 6:26
Speaker 8: Division one football player and playing in the NFL where
• 6:28
Speaker 8: you're at today, do you think that really? How how
• 6:33
Speaker 8: would you say that contributed to the journey and your
• 6:36
Speaker 8: mentality of getting to it.
• 6:38
Speaker 7: Didn't It was just a way of life. You know,
• 6:40
Speaker 7: I'm not gonna, you know, I'm in the Hall of Fame.
• 6:44
Speaker 7: I'm not going to build myself up even more by saying,
• 6:48
Speaker 7: oh my god, it was so.
• 6:50
Speaker 6: It was a way of life, you know.
• 6:51
Speaker 7: It wasn't like, oh, I can't wait to come into
• 6:54
Speaker 7: some money so I can get us out of this situation.
• 6:57
Speaker 6: I wouldn't like that. I was always taught.
• 7:00
Speaker 7: We were always taught to whatever we were doing, whether
• 7:03
Speaker 7: it was cutting grass or picking tobaccos or you know,
• 7:06
Speaker 7: rounding up chickens, you do that job better than anyone
• 7:09
Speaker 7: else does anything else.
• 7:10
Speaker 6: And that's all I try to do.
• 7:12
Speaker 7: Where I came from and how I was raised did
• 7:16
Speaker 7: not contribute to me being a football player and luckily
• 7:20
Speaker 7: being selected to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
• 7:23
Speaker 7: It didn't Being poor didn't motivate me to play football
• 7:29
Speaker 7: any harder or any better, or any.
• 7:30
Speaker 6: Other sports I played. It was just a way of life.
• 7:34
Speaker 7: And when you have that way of life, every day
• 7:38
Speaker 7: is the same day. So you just get up and
• 7:40
Speaker 7: you go and do your job better than anyone else
• 7:43
  Speaker 7: does anything else.
• 7:44
Speaker 3: All right, I'm gonna I'm going to ask the question
• 7:47
Speaker 3: in regards to what I'm going to say, your talent
• 7:53
Speaker 3: and how you used it, Like when did.
• 7:57
  Speaker 4: You realize like.
• 8:00
  Speaker 3: I'm I'm that kind of guy, like I'm I can
• 8:03
Speaker 3: be or I am that guy to be a great player.
• 8:09
Speaker 3: Even once you get to the NFL, there's that there's
• 8:11
Speaker 3: that walk in with confidence and believing that you can be,
• 8:16
Speaker 3: or there is that walking in and saying, I'm already
• 8:19
  Speaker 3: that guy.
• 8:20
Speaker 4: So as soon as I get here, I'm going to
• 8:22
  Speaker 4: be that guy.
• 8:22
Speaker 3: When did when did you figure out college NFL is
• 8:29
Speaker 3: just I can do this, and I can do it,
• 8:32
Speaker 3: not just do it, I can do it at the
• 8:34
  Speaker 3: highest level.
• 8:35
  Speaker 6: I never did. I know.
• 8:36
Speaker 7: All I wanted to do was play carl I just wanted,
• 8:39
Speaker 7: you know, playing high school.
• 8:40
Speaker 6: Football was the best, the fun, the best man.
• 8:43
Speaker 7: And then all these coaches are coming down saying how
• 8:47
Speaker 7: wonderful their school is and our program and you know.
• 8:50
Speaker 6: This and that and and no, that wasn't it.
• 8:53
Speaker 7: And I go to the University of South Carolina and
• 8:56
Speaker 7: you know, you get to meet people from all walks
• 8:58
Speaker 7: of life, all backgrounds, color shapes, you know, religious beliefs,
• 9:03
Speaker 7: and that was fun. And when I got in the NFL,
• 9:06
Speaker 7: that's all I ever wanted to do. So where a
• 9:08
Speaker 7: lot of people would say, you know, once I got
• 9:11
Speaker 7: in the NFL, you know, I never could exhale man
• 9:13
Speaker 7: because I was always trying to. I had already proven
• 9:17
Speaker 7: what I wanted to do, what my goal and what
• 9:19
Speaker 7: my dream was, and that was to play. Being an
• 9:22
Speaker 7: All Pro or a pro bowler, or doing some of
• 9:25
Speaker 7: the wonderful things my teammates helped me do. That wasn't important.
• 9:28
Speaker 7: I was playing. So I enjoyed playing like I played.
• 9:34
Speaker 7: I was a kid playing football. I enjoyed going to practice.
• 9:37
Speaker 7: I enjoyed lifting weights, trying.
• 9:39
  Speaker 6: To eat right.
• 9:41
Speaker 7: I enjoyed praying for help to be able to play
• 9:46
Speaker 7: up to my abilities.
• 9:47
  Speaker 6: I enjoyed that.
• 9:48
Speaker 7: So I never really got to the point where I
• 9:51
  Speaker 7: am I'm a guy, I'm that guy, I'm a superstar,
• 9:55
Speaker 7: or I'm trying to be the head of the pack.
• 9:58
Speaker 6: I never got there. M and and.
• 10:01
Speaker 3: For you all, and I've told you all this, but
• 10:03
Speaker 3: I want everybody to to hear this. Of every receiver
• 10:10
Speaker 3: in my entire career that I've played against, never did
• 10:14
Speaker 3: I ever find one to be playing at the highest
• 10:18
Speaker 3: level who was a fool the whole.
• 10:22
Speaker 4: Time during the game.
• 10:24
Speaker 3: Like like, I did not come here to be I'm
• 10:30
Speaker 3: telling you like I am, I am, I'm I'm locked in.
• 10:33
Speaker 4: I'm trying to press him.
• 10:34
Speaker 3: I'm playing in Man and Man and I know who
• 10:36
Speaker 3: I got, right, Like, I know this dude can play.
• 10:40
Speaker 3: And he's like talking to me and he's telling me, right,
• 10:43
  Speaker 3: it's a it's a run.
• 10:44
Speaker 4: You can relax, you can relax.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: And I'm like thinking, I know he's lying and and
• 10:49
Speaker 3: I'm and I'm trying to focus, and he like he
• 10:53
  Speaker 3: never stopped.
• 10:54
Speaker 6: I was never serious.
• 10:56
Speaker 3: And again the fact that he was never really like
• 11:00
Speaker 3: you would think, I never had a game face.
• 11:03
Speaker 4: Yes, he never had the game face.
• 11:05
Speaker 3: He's the he's the guy that he's the player that
• 11:09
Speaker 3: the coach is like, Okay, I don't even know what
• 11:13
Speaker 3: to say to him because he's laughing and joking and
• 11:15
Speaker 3: he's gonna go out and he's gonna play at the
• 11:17
  Speaker 3: highest left.
• 11:18
Speaker 8: And that was kind of my question because it seems
• 11:20
Speaker 8: like from the comments that you just made, all the
• 11:22
Speaker 8: interviews that I saw, is that I think a lot
• 11:24
Speaker 8: of guys, talented guys, they can get in their own
• 11:27
Speaker 8: head and there and they get in their own way, right,
• 11:30
Speaker 8: it seems like you just never had a mentality where
• 11:32
Speaker 8: you just you never overthought it.
• 11:34
Speaker 4: You were just like you said before, you just played.
• 11:36
Speaker 7: There's a lot of people that moved the goal posts
• 11:39
Speaker 7: and they end up being miserable at a certain stage
• 11:42
Speaker 7: in their life. Because the statement that I loved the
• 11:45
Speaker 7: most is I didn't see myself here at thirty. My
• 11:49
Speaker 7: career was over at twenty nine. I didn't see myself
• 11:52
Speaker 7: here at thirty five. And I always ask when someone
• 11:55
Speaker 7: says that, you know, because usually they're disappointed in where
• 11:58
Speaker 7: they are. So when they say I didn't see myself
• 12:01
Speaker 7: here at forty, I always go, well, what were you wearing?
• 12:07
Speaker 7: And they're like, wait what, I'm like, what were you
• 12:11
Speaker 7: wearing when you saw yourself at forty? And you know,
• 12:15
  Speaker 7: because that's a lot, and that's what you know. I
• 12:17
Speaker 7: think what we have done to sports is we've made
• 12:21
Speaker 7: it impossible for anyone to succeed. We made it impossible
• 12:27
Speaker 7: that the kid can be Tom Brady. We've made it
• 12:30
Speaker 7: impossible that a kid can be Carl Lee. You know,
• 12:33
Speaker 7: we made it impossible for a kid to be Randy
• 12:36
Speaker 7: Moss because, oh, their standard. We want to put them
• 12:40
Speaker 7: so high, because once we knock them off, they'll fall
• 12:44
  Speaker 7: a lot farther.
• 12:46
Speaker 6: And so you know, the thing is is this was
• 12:48
  Speaker 6: my goal.
• 12:49
Speaker 7: And I start off every morning and I end every
• 12:52
Speaker 7: night with this is my life. There are many like it,
• 12:57
Speaker 7: but this one is mine. So I'm not going to
• 12:59
Speaker 7: live of my life the way Lisa thinks I should.
• 13:02
Speaker 4: You know, you're great. Now you're you're great.
• 13:05
Speaker 7: You're in the Hall of Fame. But you know, where
• 13:07
Speaker 7: do you do? You know Jerry Rice? And I'm like,
• 13:09
Speaker 7: whatever Jerry Rice is, that's all Jerry. I was me
• 13:12
Speaker 7: my entire sixty years on this earth. I have tried
• 13:16
Speaker 7: my best to be me. Whatever that is. However, that
• 13:20
Speaker 7: is based on how I was raised, the principles that
• 13:23
Speaker 7: my mom, my grandmother, grandfather gave us. And so if
• 13:27
Speaker 7: I could do that and even and I would say this,
• 13:30
Speaker 7: you know, even before I was a Hall of Famer,
• 13:33
Speaker 7: I could have a conversation about my career with anyone. Yeah,
• 13:37
Speaker 7: because I was. I was happy with what I put
• 13:39
Speaker 7: on film. A lot of guys can't do that because
• 13:43
Speaker 7: they're thinking or trying now think you that you know,
• 13:47
Speaker 7: Carl Lee played in the NFL. I wasn't Carl Lee,
• 13:51
Speaker 7: but you know, so they try and either build themselves
• 13:54
Speaker 7: up or they recognize the company and they try and
• 13:57
Speaker 7: lower themselves. I never had to do that because I
• 14:00
Speaker 7: was my own standard, so I never failed.
• 14:03
Speaker 8: And I think that's the thing I'm most impressed with,
• 14:05
Speaker 8: right because I think that even guys at the highest level,
• 14:07
Speaker 8: they have those bitter bitterness when they don't get those
• 14:09
Speaker 8: accolades and when things don't go right and we're not
• 14:11
Speaker 8: not praise to a certain level and degree. So for
• 14:14
Speaker 8: you to almost i won't even say, be humble, but
• 14:16
Speaker 8: just to be content with what you did, what you accomplished,
• 14:19
Speaker 8: and did what you set out to do, and let
• 14:22
Speaker 8: it fall there and then you can judge it however
• 14:25
Speaker 8: you was to judge it.
• 14:26
Speaker 7: Well, you know in our Bibles we read that you know,
• 14:28
Speaker 7: if you seek the Lord with all you have, all
• 14:32
Speaker 7: the rest of this stuff will be added to you.
• 14:34
Speaker 6: So I only wanted to play. You know.
• 14:38
Speaker 7: My first high school coach, William Hall, taught me that
• 14:41
Speaker 7: it's okay to pray for the other team, so the
• 14:44
Speaker 7: care to pray for their health and well being, for
• 14:46
Speaker 7: their safety, and it's okay to ask God not to
• 14:49
Speaker 7: let us win or to help us win, but allow
• 14:52
Speaker 7: us to play like we practice. Now, whatever that outcome
• 14:56
Speaker 7: is that's a mirror shot you're looking at yourself. And
• 14:59
  Speaker 7: so I I've always felt that what I'm doing, I'm
• 15:03
Speaker 7: doing this for me. I never did anything for public consumption.
• 15:08
Speaker 7: Ninety percent of the people that haven't met me don't
• 15:11
Speaker 7: like me. Ninety eight percent of the people that have
• 15:14
Speaker 7: met me aren't sure if they like it because because
• 15:22
Speaker 7: I never did anything to be well liked or to
• 15:24
  Speaker 7: make friends.
• 15:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, so I have a question for you.
• 15:27
Speaker 5: Starting I'm going to go back to your career with
• 15:30
Speaker 5: the Packers from nineteen eighty eight to nineteen ninety four.
• 15:34
Speaker 5: Of course, you know, I've seen videos of you and
• 15:37
Speaker 5: and reels and clips of you saying that you're a
• 15:39
Speaker 5: Green Bay Packer for life, that you're you know, that
• 15:41
Speaker 5: is your team. You're dedicated to that team. But then
• 15:43
Speaker 5: I ran across today something that kind of, you know,
• 15:46
Speaker 5: sparked my interest, and it was a video of you
• 15:48
Speaker 5: talking about after you had your your injury, your season
• 15:52
Speaker 5: ending injury surgery, that the organization never really reached out
• 15:56
Speaker 5: to you after you know that was and that that
• 16:00
  Speaker 5: bothered you.
• 16:00
Speaker 6: Can can you tell something that bothered me? I was disappointed, Okay.
• 16:05
Speaker 7: I had you know, I knew I had this issue
• 16:07
Speaker 7: with my neck from C one to C three. I
• 16:10
Speaker 7: think it was I was born without a ligament attached
• 16:13
Speaker 7: to your dens and your spinal cord. Whichever doctor's out there,
• 16:16
Speaker 7: they know what I'm talking about, and so every time
• 16:19
Speaker 7: I would suddenly move, I would bump my spine. So
• 16:22
Speaker 7: when I had the surgery, you know, no one from
• 16:27
Speaker 7: the organization agreement packer organization. Now when I say no one,
• 16:31
Speaker 7: no trainer, no coach, no player, no front office person,
• 16:36
Speaker 7: no secretary, no one.
• 16:38
Speaker 5: So do you still feel dedicated to the packers though?
• 16:40
Speaker 7: Do you still they got nothing to do with them?
• 16:43
Speaker 7: You know, that's the whole point is it has nothing
• 16:45
Speaker 7: to do with them. Okay, they didn't.
• 16:48
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 16:49
Speaker 7: I was disappointed in the common decency of a man
• 16:54
Speaker 7: to be able to work with alongside, get to know,
• 16:59
Speaker 7: and not concerned with the health and well being of
• 17:02
Speaker 7: another man that they know.
• 17:04
Speaker 6: So I was disappointed in that, yes, But you know what, I.
• 17:09
Speaker 7: Slept really good after I got out of my brace.
• 17:13
Speaker 7: I slept really good, going to ESPN and then on
• 17:15
Speaker 7: the NFL networking, continuing to live. I found it very
• 17:21
Speaker 7: interesting though. Now granted these are totally two totally different people.
• 17:25
Speaker 7: I found it interesting that when I was at my
• 17:27
Speaker 7: perceived lowest point twenty nine my career is over, I
• 17:31
Speaker 7: could go in and have surgery and not walk again.
• 17:35
Speaker 7: I can go in and have surgery and die on
• 17:37
Speaker 7: the table because of where my injury was and the
• 17:41
Speaker 7: fact that nobody reached out. But then once I got
• 17:45
Speaker 7: selected to be a member of the Pro Football Hall
• 17:47
Speaker 7: of Fame, I heard from a bunch of people that
• 17:49
Speaker 7: I didn't even know. So I found that interestingly odd.
• 17:53
Speaker 7: But like I said, it never hurt, never stung, never mad.
• 17:56
Speaker 7: I was just disappointed and some of those people that
• 18:00
Speaker 7: were there during that time I heard from, and you know,
• 18:04
Speaker 7: for for I'm I'm really trying to be better at
• 18:08
Speaker 7: not meeting people where they are because I was real
• 18:11
Speaker 7: good at it. So if you gave me attitude, I
• 18:16
Speaker 7: was real good at me.
• 18:19
  Speaker 6: And so I just I.
• 18:21
Speaker 7: Accepted their congratulations. But uh, you know, I know that
• 18:27
  Speaker 7: that I'm here for a reason and I don't know
• 18:30
Speaker 7: what that reason is, which is good. But you know,
• 18:32
Speaker 7: the Green Bay Packers are my organization. I don't have
• 18:35
Speaker 7: to be there. I got an opportunity to play for
• 18:38
Speaker 7: that franchise for seven years, and without them, I'm I'm
• 18:42
Speaker 7: probably not wearing this jacket.
• 18:45
Speaker 3: Can can you give me, if if this is even possible,
• 18:49
Speaker 3: if you could give me the moment that you were
• 18:53
Speaker 3: walking out and your brother is standing there and you're
• 18:57
  Speaker 3: heading toward him.
• 18:59
  Speaker 6: Can you even.
• 19:01
Speaker 4: Reflect on what that moment was like?
• 19:05
Speaker 6: Or you're talking about yesterday before during the Hall of Fame?
• 19:10
  Speaker 6: Yeses to build.
• 19:15
Speaker 7: Up is he was more excited about me being a
• 19:18
Speaker 7: Hall of Famer than I was, and so his prayers
• 19:24
Speaker 7: were probably a lot louder than other people who wanted
• 19:27
Speaker 7: me to be a Hall of Famer because I think
• 19:30
Speaker 7: he understood what kind of player I was and that
• 19:35
Speaker 7: the only thing people would always say is that I
• 19:37
Speaker 7: didn't play long enough. I mean, even this weekend in Canton,
• 19:42
Speaker 7: I had people saying, congratulations, I'm being a Hall of Famer,
• 19:45
Speaker 7: But boy, if you would have played longer, you'd have
• 19:47
Speaker 7: all the records. And I'm like, wow, still ain't enough.
• 19:54
Speaker 7: But you know, my brother's my best friend, and everything
• 19:58
Speaker 7: that he has gone through, I've gone through with him.
• 20:01
Speaker 7: Everything that I've gone through, he's gone through with me.
• 20:03
Speaker 7: So you're talking about my brother looking at me and
• 20:09
Speaker 7: being like a proud father or a proud little brother
• 20:15
Speaker 7: or a proud parent. So yeah, that was really good,
• 20:19
Speaker 7: really cool to see his face, to look at his
• 20:23
Speaker 7: face and like I was saying about my speech, I
• 20:27
Speaker 7: always knew that I was going to start with Coach
• 20:29
Speaker 7: Hall because that's how I started playing, and I was
• 20:32
Speaker 7: going to end with Shannon, but I didn't know how
• 20:36
Speaker 7: to orchestrate or put that in order. And it was
• 20:41
Speaker 7: funny how, you know, as Jared Allen was talking, it
• 20:45
Speaker 7: kind of fell into place and I was like, I
• 20:47
Speaker 7: don't want to think about it, just let it out.
• 20:48
  Speaker 6: But when you.
• 20:51
Speaker 7: Standing there looking at his face and him crying and
• 20:54
Speaker 7: in tears of joy, that was a pretty cool moment.
• 20:58
  Speaker 6: It really was.
• 21:00
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I just can't imagine it, and
• 21:03
Speaker 3: I was. I'm sitting there, me and Dominic are sitting
• 21:06
Speaker 3: there and we're like watching.
• 21:08
  Speaker 4: This man, and it's like, I don't know if I
• 21:14
  Speaker 4: could even.
• 21:16
Speaker 3: Even feel like what you guys were thinking and feeling
• 21:21
Speaker 3: amongst each other. But it was like I was so proud,
• 21:25
Speaker 3: like like it was almost like my brother just went
• 21:28
Speaker 3: in you know what I'm saying, because.
• 21:30
Speaker 4: I had gotten to I had gotten to know you.
• 21:34
Speaker 3: Well enough, good enough, and could understand because all those
• 21:40
Speaker 3: guys that I covered, you know, all those people that
• 21:42
Speaker 3: I covered, and people ask me who is this, Who's
• 21:45
  Speaker 3: the best guy?
• 21:46
  Speaker 4: Who's that?
• 21:47
Speaker 3: And I'm like, well, I know you said this guy,
• 21:50
Speaker 3: but let me tell you about that guy over there,
• 21:52
Speaker 3: and let me tell you what he did, because again,
• 21:55
Speaker 3: the most amazing thing to me, and I can't repeat
• 21:59
Speaker 3: myself enough tonight to understand when you're playing. Let's say
• 22:04
  Speaker 3: it's a Monday night game, it's a Prime game. Everybody's watching.
• 22:08
Speaker 3: It's Vikings and it's the Packers, and it's Sterling Sharp
• 22:13
Speaker 3: and Carlley. This dude is laughing and joking. He's telling
• 22:19
Speaker 3: us in the huddle, why y'all even in the huddle,
• 22:21
  Speaker 3: y'all y'all.
• 22:22
Speaker 4: Just playing man the man in blitzing, and I would play.
• 22:29
Speaker 3: I mean I literally, I literally would have to tell
• 22:31
Speaker 3: the DB's like, don't talk to him, don't talk, because
• 22:36
Speaker 3: he's gonna talk you into a touchdown.
• 22:38
Speaker 7: Her Thomas Thomas would talk, don't Chris Dovean.
• 22:45
  Speaker 4: Okay, they're up.
• 22:47
Speaker 6: The highlight. I even got to talk to me a
• 22:51
  Speaker 6: little bit.
• 22:52
Speaker 4: They're not gonna be on the highlight.
• 22:53
Speaker 7: That's gonna be us and so you know, and that's
• 22:56
Speaker 7: the thing about enjoying what you do.
• 22:59
Speaker 3: Do you think I hate to interrupt, but do you
• 23:01
Speaker 3: think the fact that you you could enjoy it so
• 23:05
Speaker 3: much had a lot to do with how great?
• 23:08
Speaker 4: Because I'm not gonna call it call it good, but
• 23:10
Speaker 4: how great you were?
• 23:11
  Speaker 6: Know.
• 23:11
Speaker 7: I think what it is, Carl, is like I said
• 23:14
Speaker 7: about the destruction of sports.
• 23:16
Speaker 6: You got to be a certain way.
• 23:18
Speaker 7: You got to do it a certain way, you got
• 23:21
Speaker 7: to understand it a certain way. And I don't know
• 23:25
Speaker 7: if I will live long enough or talk enough to
• 23:27
Speaker 7: be able to explain to people that the phrase your
• 23:31
Speaker 7: best is good enough actually is. And so when I
• 23:36
Speaker 7: was enjoying playing football at the professional level, you know,
• 23:41
Speaker 7: my brother talked trash and his.
• 23:42
Speaker 6: Trash talking with he did. I talk trash.
• 23:46
Speaker 7: But I only talk to you because, man, we got
• 23:49
Speaker 7: two and a half three hours to get through this thing.
• 23:52
Speaker 7: I want you to come out healthy. I want to
• 23:53
Speaker 7: come out healthy. You practice this week. I practiced this week.
• 23:57
Speaker 7: In certain situations, we're gonna have to go up against
• 24:01
Speaker 7: each other for a pass or a block. And I
• 24:05
Speaker 7: want your best just like you want mine. Well guess
• 24:07
Speaker 7: what that don't make you a bad guy if you win,
• 24:10
Speaker 7: you know, you know. So I always wanted it to
• 24:15
Speaker 7: be I'm doing what I want to do. If you're
• 24:17
Speaker 7: not doing what you want to do at the level
• 24:20
Speaker 7: you want to do it at, it's not my fault.
• 24:22
Speaker 6: And so I always tried to enjoy.
• 24:25
Speaker 7: Whether it was in Chicago or Minnesota or Tampa, I
• 24:30
Speaker 7: wanted to play, enjoy playing, and.
• 24:35
Speaker 6: My best was good enough.
• 24:36
Speaker 7: I did my job better than anyone else did anything else.
• 24:39
  Speaker 4: That's awesome.
• 24:40
Speaker 8: And not only did your brother follow you on the
• 24:42
Speaker 8: football field, but also follow you on TV. Because what
• 24:45
Speaker 8: people may not know is that shortly after your playing
• 24:48
Speaker 8: career you went to ESPN. Now you as a teenager
• 24:52
Speaker 8: watching you, you were like kind of the first person
• 24:55
Speaker 8: I seen in that position, not only talking from a
• 24:58
Speaker 8: player's perspective, not just giving the coach talk, but you
• 25:01
Speaker 8: actually had some swag. You were funny, You had that charisma.
• 25:06
  Speaker 6: So I was.
• 25:12
Speaker 8: Because because I think people What people don't realize is
• 25:16
Speaker 8: like you were sort of the first generation of that
• 25:18
Speaker 8: to have a former player come on television not just
• 25:21
  Speaker 8: be a robot.
• 25:22
Speaker 7: But I think it's not to cut you off. That's
• 25:25
Speaker 7: the problem. The problem is is we all are. It's
• 25:28
Speaker 7: so funny how our careers differ. But here we are,
• 25:32
Speaker 7: on this day, at this time, sitting in the same place.
• 25:35
Speaker 6: I mean, here we are.
• 25:36
Speaker 7: How our careers different, Lisa, And here we are sitting
• 25:39
Speaker 7: in the same place. So obviously what you did worked. Obviously,
• 25:44
Speaker 7: hollis what you did worked. Here we are, you know,
• 25:47
Speaker 7: as great as somebody may say or think we are.
• 25:50
Speaker 7: We're sitting in the same place. And I think what
• 25:53
Speaker 7: we're doing, what we've done to sports is we have
• 25:57
Speaker 7: made those we want superhuman, and we have minimized those
• 26:01
Speaker 7: we want. We have made the minimal. And my whole
• 26:05
Speaker 7: existence has always been and not an act, but to
• 26:08
Speaker 7: be me. And if you like it, that's wonderful. But
• 26:11
Speaker 7: if you don't like it, you live in West Virginia.
• 26:14
Speaker 7: I live in South Carolina. So if you don't like it,
• 26:16
  Speaker 7: I don't care. And I think that's the biggest thing
• 26:21
Speaker 7: is just people will talk about being themselves and do
• 26:26
Speaker 7: everything they can to be what you want them to be,
• 26:29
Speaker 7: and that is so confusing that they never get And
• 26:33
Speaker 7: I have adopted this about ten years ago. The difference
• 26:36
Speaker 7: between joy and happiness. Happiness can be taken away. Joy
• 26:40
Speaker 7: comes from within it cannot and so a lot of
• 26:43
Speaker 7: people give up their joy because they're trying to make
• 26:46
  Speaker 7: you happy.
• 26:47
  Speaker 6: I love it.
• 26:48
Speaker 8: And have you ever thought about kind of getting back,
• 26:51
Speaker 8: whether it's podcast and whether getting.
• 26:53
Speaker 7: Or a there's too many people talking, okay, there's way
• 26:55
Speaker 7: too many people talking to podcasts. There's way too many
• 27:09
Speaker 7: people with an opinion, and there's way too many people
• 27:12
Speaker 7: with an opinion that's not educated. I mean, and I
• 27:15
Speaker 7: think what what a lot of people don't realize is
• 27:18
  Speaker 7: how powerful that.
• 27:20
Speaker 6: Mike and this tongue can be.
• 27:22
Speaker 7: And so for instance, if you go, well, give me
• 27:25
Speaker 7: your Mount Rushmore of wide receivers, I go, you know,
• 27:30
Speaker 7: I like Fred Barnett.
• 27:32
  Speaker 6: Wayne Forbet, Uh.
• 27:35
Speaker 7: Jake read Yeah, and uh James Laughton, and people are
• 27:41
Speaker 7: gonna go what I'm going? I thought you asked me
• 27:43
Speaker 7: for mine? Did you ask me for mine? To give
• 27:46
Speaker 7: you your Mount Rushmore? And I think we have fallen
• 27:50
Speaker 7: because of everybody has an opinion, everybody has a mic,
• 27:53
Speaker 7: everybody has a camera phone. I think what we have done,
• 27:57
Speaker 7: or what we're doing, is we're ruining sport. So when
• 28:01
Speaker 7: guys are get asking questions, they're trying to think while
• 28:05
Speaker 7: you're asking a question, you're not getting the honest answer.
• 28:07
Speaker 7: So if I can't tell you an honest answer, guess
• 28:10
Speaker 7: what how about we just not talk at all?
• 28:13
  Speaker 6: Well?
• 28:14
Speaker 5: I like that a lot, all right, all right, So
• 28:16
Speaker 5: I want to go back to the Hall of Fame game.
• 28:18
Speaker 5: I saw you on TV. I saw your interview during
• 28:21
Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame game, right, And so it was
• 28:24
Speaker 5: the Chargers versus the Lions, and it was the traditional
• 28:28
Speaker 5: kickoff game for the NFL preseason. So, Starline, what are
• 28:32
Speaker 5: your thoughts about preseason games? Do you think there's enough
• 28:35
Speaker 5: of them? Too many of them? Do you think you
• 28:37
Speaker 5: know it's a predictor of future's success For this season?
• 28:40
  Speaker 7: I don't have to play, so I don't care. I mean, honestly,
• 28:45
Speaker 7: the thing is is if you don't think everything that
• 28:50
Speaker 7: we do is about money, you're killing yourself.
• 28:54
  Speaker 6: So as a.
• 28:56
Speaker 7: Player, guess what if we'd have played two preseason games
• 28:59
Speaker 7: and that's what it was, we'd had to play six,
• 29:01
Speaker 7: then that's what it was.
• 29:03
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 29:03
Speaker 7: I always used to say to myself, I never want
• 29:07
Speaker 7: to say when I played, you know, we used to
• 29:11
Speaker 7: do two a days for a month, yeah, and were
• 29:15
Speaker 7: hitting and we were hitting. Yeah, And those two days
• 29:19
Speaker 7: I don't like comparing myself or my era to what
• 29:22
Speaker 7: they're doing today. Sure, I just sit back and don't
• 29:25
Speaker 7: watch it because I play golf, so I don't really
• 29:28
Speaker 7: concern myself. I don't really concern myself with what they're doing.
• 29:32
  Speaker 6: But I don't.
• 29:33
  Speaker 7: I don't have a thought on it if there's too
• 29:35
Speaker 7: many or too little. It's like in IL, I don't
• 29:37
Speaker 7: have a thought on guys making a million dollars or
• 29:40
Speaker 7: two million dollars on their name, image and likeness, and
• 29:43
Speaker 7: oh what would you have made? Well, I don't know,
• 29:45
Speaker 7: because we didn't have it. So there's no sense in
• 29:48
Speaker 7: racking my brain going back, making myself angry because I
• 29:52
  Speaker 7: didn't get denial.
• 29:53
  Speaker 4: I find it.
• 29:54
  Speaker 3: I found it interesting because like I don't I don't
• 29:57
Speaker 3: really particularly care to watch football today either, Like I
• 30:01
  Speaker 3: don't have that as a as a thing, Like I
• 30:05
Speaker 3: don't carry that. I don't even want to carry that
• 30:08
Speaker 3: as a as a person, you know. And and I think,
• 30:12
Speaker 3: I think what you have kind of done is you
• 30:16
Speaker 3: I'll say you had forcefully put people at people uncomfortable
• 30:21
Speaker 3: to come at you with football, you know.
• 30:25
Speaker 4: And and I think on.
• 30:26
Speaker 3: My side of it, I'll accept somebody having the conversation.
• 30:30
Speaker 3: I'll listen to it, but it's not really something that
• 30:35
Speaker 3: but but you you really want to reflect on And
• 30:37
Speaker 3: I get that people people really want to hear it
• 30:41
Speaker 3: from you when they when they're talking to you, they
• 30:43
Speaker 3: want to know like and and can tell me who's
• 30:46
Speaker 3: the best receiver, tell me this or tell me that,
• 30:49
Speaker 3: and and I know that's important to them, But it
• 30:53
Speaker 3: isn't something really that you're really gonna even understand when
• 30:57
Speaker 3: I you know, I gave I gave him an now
• 31:00
Speaker 3: of him and Rice of who I would think is
• 31:04
Speaker 3: the best player, which would be him and not because
• 31:05
Speaker 3: he's in the room. Yeah, I've said that forever, But
• 31:12
  Speaker 3: somebody who's a who's a Rice fan, it's gonna be like, well,
• 31:16
Speaker 3: how do you get that?
• 31:17
Speaker 4: Like, how do you try to give you the opinion?
• 31:20
Speaker 3: I saw them both, you know what I'm saying, Like
• 31:22
Speaker 3: I sit in front of them and try to put
• 31:24
Speaker 3: my hands on them, and I can make that judgement.
• 31:27
Speaker 8: But just to go with that, though, I think for
• 31:29
Speaker 8: the average listener it may be hard for them to
• 31:32
Speaker 8: comprehend how gentlemen who have reached the highest highs in
• 31:36
Speaker 8: the NFL don't have that sort of you know, passion
• 31:40
Speaker 8: for the game whatever.
• 31:41
  Speaker 6: Love for football.
• 31:43
Speaker 7: Yeah, the love for football because as a fan, they
• 31:48
Speaker 7: talk to us like we're fans.
• 31:51
Speaker 6: As a fan, I want you to enjoy what I enjoy.
• 31:55
Speaker 7: I'm like, so you're telling me it's fun to go
• 31:58
Speaker 7: sit in traffic for forty five.
• 32:00
Speaker 6: Minutes to an Now you telling me it's fun to
• 32:03
  Speaker 6: sit and.
• 32:06
  Speaker 5: Do that.
• 32:06
  Speaker 6: But I don't know.
• 32:07
Speaker 5: Maybe I'm just think got one.
• 32:11
Speaker 7: Of burger and a beer, so I'm gonna go and
• 32:13
Speaker 7: miss the entire first quarter to get the burger in
• 32:16
Speaker 7: the beer. Now I got to go to the restaurom
• 32:19
Speaker 7: and I got to stand in the line for forty
• 32:21
Speaker 7: five minutes to go.
• 32:22
Speaker 6: That's fun. Okay, you keep having it because.
• 32:28
Speaker 7: I'm gonna make it one less player that your personally
• 32:31
Speaker 7: that you have to deal with. But it goes back
• 32:33
Speaker 7: to be in your own standard. Everybody wants to compare
• 32:41
Speaker 7: h this person to that person Deebo Samuels who went
• 32:45
Speaker 7: to South Carolina. People go, oh, he reminds me of you.
• 32:51
Speaker 7: What am I supposed to do with that? When you
• 32:54
Speaker 7: look in the NFL? What receiver in the NFL reminded
• 32:57
Speaker 7: you of you? And really look at receivers kind.
• 33:01
  Speaker 6: Of like that.
• 33:02
Speaker 7: You know, So everybody's not asking a question because they
• 33:06
Speaker 7: they want an answer. They're asking a question because they
• 33:09
Speaker 7: want an answer that they can debate or kick.
• 33:13
  Speaker 6: Around the work.
• 33:14
Speaker 7: So it has nothing really to do with the answer
• 33:17
Speaker 7: you give. It has to do with what am I
• 33:20
Speaker 7: going to do with the answer you give me.
• 33:22
Speaker 8: I think that's because what we try to do on
• 33:24
Speaker 8: the show, we obviously we talk sports, but we also
• 33:26
Speaker 8: talked social issues, mentality, different things of that nature. And
• 33:29
Speaker 8: I think far as what I'm getting out of that
• 33:31
Speaker 8: is sort of that standard. And I think to your point,
• 33:34
Speaker 8: not just in sports, but in business in different fields,
• 33:38
Speaker 8: we we lose that right because we we don't try
• 33:41
Speaker 8: to just live up or achieve our standards, and we
• 33:44
Speaker 8: try to make somebody else's standards or objectives.
• 33:48
Speaker 3: Grown always trying to connect somebody to Holicis Hollis is
• 33:54
Speaker 3: kind of like such and such.
• 33:56
Speaker 4: At least, it's kind of like do is.
• 33:59
  Speaker 7: I don't go tools or I don't go to teams
• 34:02
Speaker 7: and talk to the team because I want you to
• 34:05
Speaker 7: go on your journey your way. I want you to
• 34:08
Speaker 7: be able to say, you know what, man, I played football,
• 34:11
Speaker 7: but but uh, you know, I enjoyed every second of
• 34:16
Speaker 7: the Man, that was great for me playing a lot
• 34:18
Speaker 7: of golf and a lot of programs. I get a
• 34:21
Speaker 7: chance to play with college golfers, and it's so interesting
• 34:25
Speaker 7: to be like, you know.
• 34:26
Speaker 6: Hey, so hey house, where'd you go to school?
• 34:29
  Speaker 9: Oh?
• 34:29
Speaker 7: Man, I just went to a little school up in
• 34:32
Speaker 7: West Virginia. Man, it wasn't nothing big. I'm like, wait
• 34:34
Speaker 7: a minute, So you went there, got an education, got
• 34:37
Speaker 7: a chance to play golf.
• 34:38
Speaker 6: But you're gonna put your school down now because of
• 34:41
  Speaker 6: it wasn't.
• 34:44
  Speaker 4: I that that is a that is a legitimate That's.
• 34:47
Speaker 6: What I'm doing. Hey, where'd you play football? Oh?
• 34:50
Speaker 7: I played at Metro State. Man, you know, just a
• 34:53
Speaker 7: D nine school, you know, out in the middle of nowhere.
• 34:56
Speaker 7: But I'm like, oh, but you went there, you got
• 34:59
Speaker 7: an education, But now you're gonna minimize the school that
• 35:02
Speaker 7: gave you a chance to continue to do what you
• 35:05
  Speaker 7: want to do.
• 35:06
Speaker 6: And that's just basically.
• 35:09
Speaker 7: I'm gonna trust, well, he went to South Carolina and
• 35:11
Speaker 7: he was an All American, So I'm going to try
• 35:13
Speaker 7: and lower my standard.
• 35:15
Speaker 6: Because it doesn't come close to his standard.
• 35:18
Speaker 7: And I think that's That's another one of the things
• 35:20
Speaker 7: that we do in sport. We don't enjoy it for ourselves.
• 35:24
Speaker 7: We enjoy it for whatever I can say, do or
• 35:27
  Speaker 7: for other people.
• 35:28
Speaker 6: I'm either going to make you look good or I'm
• 35:30
Speaker 6: gonna make you look bad with my sport. That's how
• 35:33
  Speaker 6: we listen.
• 35:33
Speaker 5: So, Sterling, I'm gonna I'm going to bring up a
• 35:35
Speaker 5: subject that's near and dear to Carl, Carl's heart, and
• 35:38
Speaker 5: that would be Aaron Rodgers. So we know that, you know,
• 35:42
Speaker 5: he's starting his journey with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season,
• 35:44
Speaker 5: and he's he's already come out and pretty much said,
• 35:48
Speaker 5: I think on the Pat McAfee show and several other
• 35:50
Speaker 5: venues that this will probably be his last year. What
• 35:55
Speaker 5: are your thoughts about his career and him coming to
• 35:58
Speaker 5: the Steelers this year? For one, as to.
• 36:00
Speaker 7: Raw, that's that's a hard question to answer based on
• 36:04
Speaker 7: the way you asked.
• 36:06
Speaker 6: Is there another way you could ask that question?
• 36:08
Speaker 5: Okay, let's see then let me put it in different words.
• 36:12
Speaker 5: So he's he's definitely or he's not definitely. He said
• 36:16
Speaker 5: on different social platforms that he's retiring this year, and
• 36:20
Speaker 5: so he you know, he was on the fence, you know,
• 36:23
Speaker 5: after he left the Jets about it.
• 36:25
  Speaker 7: He's already retired, that's what you're saying. You're saying, aready
• 36:30
Speaker 7: because you're saying he's already retired.
• 36:33
Speaker 4: Do you think so?
• 36:34
Speaker 5: Because I said he was on the fence about coming back.
• 36:36
Speaker 6: Then you're already retired.
• 36:37
Speaker 4: Yes, And I would one agree with that.
• 36:41
Speaker 5: Because I don't know if he's ever said that publicly.
• 36:44
Speaker 5: But I mean, he took long and all I don't
• 36:46
Speaker 5: know if to make that decision, which makes me think that, you.
• 36:50
Speaker 6: Know, my thing is is that I should never have
• 36:56
Speaker 6: to tell you how good.
• 36:57
Speaker 7: I am, because if I I got to tell you
• 37:00
Speaker 7: how good I am, then I'm probably If I could
• 37:03
Speaker 7: tell you what I did, I probably didn't do anything.
• 37:06
Speaker 7: And so when you know, studying psychology, when someone says
• 37:13
Speaker 7: to you, can I be honest, they're ready A lot.
• 37:18
Speaker 7: I don't mean this, Lisa address you have on I
• 37:23
Speaker 7: don't mean this in a negative way.
• 37:25
Speaker 5: But and I'm a little nervous dressed for tonight, but
• 37:32
  Speaker 5: that's okay.
• 37:33
Speaker 7: There's a lot of things that ar does that are him.
• 37:37
Speaker 7: I don't know him well enough to be able to
• 37:39
  Speaker 7: interpret his mannerisms.
• 37:41
Speaker 6: But you know, in our game, either you're in or
• 37:43
  Speaker 6: you're out.
• 37:45
Speaker 7: And if you're not in, then they will kick you out,
• 37:48
Speaker 7: whether it's through an injury, whether it's through your teammates
• 37:52
Speaker 7: not believing in you. You can't fake That's what I
• 37:56
Speaker 7: love about sports. Can't fake it. Sure you either in
• 37:59
Speaker 7: or you're out, and there is no in between. And
• 38:01
Speaker 7: a lot of people fail in sports because hall this
• 38:04
Speaker 7: ain't in it. He's doing it for me, and I
• 38:08
Speaker 7: think that when I look at Aaron Rodgers, He's always
• 38:11
Speaker 7: been a good friend to me. He's always been a
• 38:13
Speaker 7: good you know, I think, a really good player, and
• 38:17
Speaker 7: I think if everything falls their way, they could be
• 38:20
Speaker 7: a really good team. He throws it too well. I
• 38:24
Speaker 7: think he sees the field too well. I think he
• 38:27
Speaker 7: orchestrates way too well. And I think if if they
• 38:31
Speaker 7: can protect him running the ball enough, play action pass game,
• 38:37
Speaker 7: he's one of the best. I think they could be
• 38:39
Speaker 7: successful and whatever that is, you know, as I think
• 38:42
  Speaker 7: they'll have a winning record.
• 38:43
Speaker 3: Now. See my fear. My fear is if they don't
• 38:47
Speaker 3: protect him. I don't know if he's able at this
• 38:53
Speaker 3: point to take enough hits.
• 38:56
Speaker 7: He's mentally, he's mentally uh, he's very mentally. He knows
• 39:00
Speaker 7: how to protect himself. I mean the ones you don't see.
• 39:04
Speaker 7: You know, that's hard. But when he's in, he knows
• 39:06
Speaker 7: who's going to get there first. He knows, he knows
• 39:10
Speaker 7: that that you know, it's going to be this guy
• 39:12
  Speaker 7: or that guy.
• 39:13
Speaker 6: So you know how to position yourself.
• 39:15
Speaker 7: You know that you know how to position yourself to
• 39:18
Speaker 7: absorb the contact where it's not as now how it
• 39:22
Speaker 7: looks on TV. I think mentally he is. He's a
• 39:25
Speaker 7: lot strong, a lot stronger, and a lot sharper than
• 39:28
Speaker 7: people want to give him credit. Because you know, right now,
• 39:31
Speaker 7: we don't like ar you know, we don't like the
• 39:33
Speaker 7: fact that he's aloof sometimes, and we don't like the
• 39:36
Speaker 7: fact that he wants to go to Egypt right before
• 39:39
Speaker 7: training camp for we don't like those things because we
• 39:43
Speaker 7: don't or we can't do it. So I think Aaron
• 39:45
Speaker 7: has been in the league long enough that he knows
• 39:48
Speaker 7: a lot of the tricks of the trade to be
• 39:49
Speaker 7: able to survive it.
• 39:51

• 41:17
Speaker 2: Carl Lee. Now back to the conversation.
• 41:21
Speaker 8: Now, now, I want to go back because you know
• 41:23
Speaker 8: a lot of us, not I'm not gonna say a
• 41:25
Speaker 8: lot of us, but some of us.
• 41:26
Speaker 6: See what he just did.
• 41:29
Speaker 4: That wasn't a lot of us.
• 41:31
Speaker 8: Well, I don't want to see a lot of them
• 41:32
Speaker 8: because I ain't trying to put all brothers in that box.
• 41:35
Speaker 8: But you know some of us, you know who cling
• 41:38
Speaker 8: on the sports, You know we're from projects.
• 41:40
Speaker 4: I was from the projects right here in West Virginia.
• 41:42
Speaker 8: And I've heard your brother allude to your upbringing, but
• 41:47
Speaker 8: I did not know until that interview the other day.
• 41:51
Speaker 8: I mean what you guys did for money, your hustles,
• 41:53
Speaker 8: you know, the hey rounding up the chicken, the rabbits,
• 41:57
Speaker 8: I mean a thousand chickens for what was.
• 42:01
  Speaker 6: It a dollar?
• 42:02
Speaker 8: Thousand a dollar one thousand, So because when I first
• 42:04
Speaker 8: heard it, I thought it was a dollar per chicken.
• 42:08
  Speaker 4: A thousands, that's pretty dollar a thousand, dollar a thousand.
• 42:11
Speaker 8: You said you would make around sixteen ten dollars sixteen thousand.
• 42:17
Speaker 7: If the four of us went in a chicken house
• 42:18
Speaker 7: that had ten thousand chickens, we got a dollar a thousand,
• 42:22
Speaker 7: So we made ten dollars.
• 42:23
Speaker 8: So what so just walk us through that? So does
• 42:26
Speaker 8: that intel like you have to like physically grab them
• 42:29
Speaker 8: and pitt them on the truck.
• 42:30
Speaker 7: Okay, So back in the day, back in the day
• 42:34
Speaker 7: when we were doing it, let's say it's the four
• 42:38
Speaker 7: of us. So let's say Carl would be a catcher.
• 42:42
Speaker 7: So his job is to catch. So you do it
• 42:47
Speaker 7: at night because they call them chickens for a reason.
• 42:49
Speaker 6: That's why you can't run up on them because they're
• 42:52
Speaker 6: going to run away from you.
• 42:53
Speaker 7: So at night they can't see and so they'll all
• 42:55
Speaker 7: huddle together. So Carl is the catcher and the three
• 42:58
Speaker 7: of us are carriers. So we're either three and three
• 43:03
Speaker 7: or we're three and four, and all we do is
• 43:06
Speaker 7: is we walk and take them to the truck. He's catching,
• 43:09
Speaker 7: so it could take you anywhere from an hour and
• 43:12
Speaker 7: a half to two and a half hours. And you're
• 43:15
Speaker 7: talking starting at eleven o'clock and you're talking about finishing
• 43:18
Speaker 7: at one. Okay, now you've got to go home. You
• 43:22
Speaker 7: got all this chicken stuff on you. Well you're not
• 43:24
Speaker 7: just jumping into bed, are you?
• 43:26
  Speaker 4: No way?
• 43:26
  Speaker 6: Okay?
• 43:27
Speaker 7: Well okay, so now you don't You don't have running water.
• 43:31
Speaker 7: So the water that you have, you go have to
• 43:34
Speaker 7: heat up. So you got to wait for that to happen.
• 43:38
Speaker 7: And so now you not in a bathtub. You're in
• 43:41
Speaker 7: a what we would call a washtub, and so you
• 43:44
Speaker 7: are legging and you know, you wash your body like
• 43:48
Speaker 7: you wash your car from the top down, so you
• 43:51
Speaker 7: wash your face and you work your way down. Well,
• 43:53
Speaker 7: now it's three o'clock. So now you get into bed,
• 43:57
Speaker 7: and guess what. You got to be ready for the
• 44:00
Speaker 7: bus at seven point thirty or you know when I
• 44:03
Speaker 7: started driving, You know you got to be at school
• 44:05
  Speaker 7: by eight.
• 44:06
Speaker 6: Then you got practice. You go do that, and.
• 44:09
Speaker 7: Then guess what, you do a little homework and then
• 44:13
Speaker 7: we're right back catching him again tomorrow.
• 44:16
Speaker 8: And I guess that's what I'm saying because to me,
• 44:18
Speaker 8: I'm just amazed because.
• 44:19
Speaker 7: The way of life all us don't don't be amazed.
• 44:21
  Speaker 7: But what I'm saying, and I'm what you're saying, don't
• 44:25
  Speaker 7: get up.
• 44:25
Speaker 8: And I love it because a lot of people come
• 44:28
Speaker 8: from where I come from a similar background. We walk
• 44:31
Speaker 8: through life with a chip because of that background. But
• 44:34
Speaker 8: you and your brother, y'all don't like you said.
• 44:36
Speaker 7: My brother, my brother that motive And I said this,
• 44:40
Speaker 7: it's amazing how two people can look out the same
• 44:42
Speaker 7: window and see two totally different things. That motivated him
• 44:47
Speaker 7: had no effect on me. And that's amazing, had no.
• 44:50
  Speaker 6: Effect on me.
• 44:53
Speaker 4: Did you say you don't have a chip?
• 44:55
Speaker 3: No, No, Okay, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna challenge that.
• 45:02
Speaker 4: Okay, Okay, I can so.
• 45:06
Speaker 3: So during your time playing and even after your time playing,
• 45:11
Speaker 3: you have the ability to be distant with people. And
• 45:16
Speaker 3: and I'm and and my thing is, where would where
• 45:19
Speaker 3: would that? Where does that come from? Is that just
• 45:23
Speaker 3: the uncomfortable when you say distant? Well, I mean what
• 45:25
  Speaker 3: are we talking?
• 45:25
Speaker 4: Okay? Like like you don't happen.
• 45:27
  Speaker 6: I don't like. I don't like people.
• 45:31
Speaker 7: Okay, I avoid people as much as humanly possible. And
• 45:34
  Speaker 7: it's hard and.
• 45:35
Speaker 4: Where and where? Okay, and again, now think about this.
• 45:40
  Speaker 3: You're a great football player, and now you're a notable
• 45:44
Speaker 3: in history football player in the Hall of Fame, and
• 45:50
  Speaker 3: everybody's going to be attracted to you. I'm I'm, I'm,
• 45:53
Speaker 3: I'm your friend. You decide you volunteered to come on
• 45:57
Speaker 3: this show for me, invited myself. Yes you did, and
• 46:01
Speaker 3: you don't have to do that. But there are but
• 46:04
Speaker 3: there are people, and there are things that I know
• 46:07
Speaker 3: and I've seen where you have been.
• 46:10
Speaker 4: Like no, well, coach, you ain't people.
• 46:12
Speaker 7: This this is my life. There are many like it,
• 46:19
Speaker 7: but this one is mine. And my daughter's thirty one
• 46:23
Speaker 7: years old. So when she was younger, she heard no
• 46:26
Speaker 7: see many times, and we've tried to teach her words
• 46:31
Speaker 7: like no, don't want or can't eliminate options. So on
• 46:37
Speaker 7: a day where I don't want to sign autographs, the
• 46:39
Speaker 7: answer is no, there is no option.
• 46:43
Speaker 6: You ain't getting one.
• 46:44
Speaker 7: Okay, however you feel or however your parents feel, or
• 46:48
Speaker 7: take a picture, the answer is no.
• 46:51
Speaker 6: And a lot of people don't accept no.
• 46:53
Speaker 7: So what I do is is I try and help
• 46:56
Speaker 7: those people by staying in a way stay away from them.
• 47:00
Speaker 6: So I don't put them to have to accept the answer.
• 47:03
Speaker 5: Note Sterling, I want to say something really quick. If
• 47:06
Speaker 5: you don't have anything nice to say, come sit beside me. Okay,
• 47:09
Speaker 5: I know we'll we'll keep each other great company. So
• 47:12
Speaker 5: I want to go back to something that I've heard
• 47:14
Speaker 5: you say several times. You've said it, you said it
• 47:16
Speaker 5: before when we had you call into the podcast. You
• 47:19
Speaker 5: mentioned it also during your hof induction ceremony, and it
• 47:24
Speaker 5: was the saying that learned to follow.
• 47:26
Speaker 7: You have to learn to follow before you can where
• 47:28
Speaker 7: you can lead. The problem is is it? And I
• 47:33
Speaker 7: got or I get this a lot from people. We
• 47:38
Speaker 7: as a society have gotten so strong that we don't
• 47:42
Speaker 7: ask for help. We don't know what we're doing, but
• 47:44
  Speaker 7: we want to.
• 47:45
Speaker 6: Ask for help. When you learn how to follow, you
• 47:50
  Speaker 6: learn that.
• 47:50
Speaker 7: Guess what if I was coached by by two high
• 47:55
Speaker 7: school coaches that really never played outside of high school.
• 48:00
Speaker 7: One was at an all black school and coach Hall
• 48:03
Speaker 7: and coach McCall is a military man who you know,
• 48:05
Speaker 7: never played outside of high school. Why am I listening
• 48:08
Speaker 7: to them? I get to college, I got a position
• 48:11
Speaker 7: coach that played at Carson Newman little receiver knew what
• 48:15
Speaker 7: he was doing, and so it kind of made sense.
• 48:20
Speaker 7: But if you don't learn to follow, and following is
• 48:23
Speaker 7: not doing what you do or saying what you say.
• 48:26
Speaker 7: Following is watching what you do, watching how you say it.
• 48:31
Speaker 7: And I remember my grandfather used to be very direct,
• 48:38
Speaker 7: and a lot of people didn't like that. I did
• 48:40
Speaker 7: because I knew where I stood. I always liked letting
• 48:43
Speaker 7: you know where you stand because a lot of people
• 48:47
Speaker 7: aren't sure. If Hollis likes them, you know, you know somehow,
• 48:51
Speaker 7: and I just let you know where we stand, and
• 48:53
Speaker 7: then all we can develop our friendship around that. When
• 48:57
Speaker 7: I'm thinking for you, get you in trouble. Learning how
• 49:01
Speaker 7: to follow is very It's a difficult task because that
• 49:06
Speaker 7: means you know more than me. You know, I used
• 49:09
Speaker 7: to always tell my daughter, I've already been your age,
• 49:12
Speaker 7: you ain't never been mine. So wherever you think or
• 49:15
Speaker 7: you feel like you may be smarter than me, your
• 49:18
Speaker 7: neurons are firing faster than mine.
• 49:22
Speaker 6: Slow down, they're not.
• 49:23
Speaker 3: I'm stealing that you're doing that to night?
• 49:28
Speaker 4: I got four tonight.
• 49:29
Speaker 8: So and that on that same vein at least's question
• 49:33
Speaker 8: you towards the end of your career. You had this
• 49:36
Speaker 8: new coach, John Grutin, and to that point, I believe
• 49:41
Speaker 8: you probably applied those same principles because I mean, you're
• 49:43
Speaker 8: in you having all success, and you have this new
• 49:45
Speaker 8: coach essentially teaching you a new way of sort of
• 49:48
  Speaker 8: looking at things.
• 49:50
  Speaker 6: Yes or no.
• 49:51
Speaker 7: Okay, buddy, guys taught me position body position. Now you're
• 49:57
Speaker 7: talking to a consensus all America. Leaving the University of
• 50:01
Speaker 7: South Carolina. You're talking to a guy that the Green
• 50:04
Speaker 7: Bay Packers drafted seventh in the first round.
• 50:07
Speaker 6: So I'm gonna come there and you're gonna do what
• 50:09
  Speaker 6: with me?
• 50:10
Speaker 7: So you got to learn to follow because he's got
• 50:12
  Speaker 7: a job, So why don't I incorporate.
• 50:15
Speaker 6: What he's doing into my game?
• 50:18
Speaker 7: And then I got sarm Lewis came from San Francisco
• 50:21
Speaker 7: with Mike Hongren coached the greatest receiver that we've ever seen.
• 50:24
Speaker 6: Searm did two things for me.
• 50:26
Speaker 7: One, he taught me to understand why plays are being
• 50:29
Speaker 7: called run and passed. And the most important thing Sharam
• 50:34
Speaker 7: did for me was he never mentioned me and Jerry
• 50:38
Speaker 7: in the same sentence, so he never took away my
• 50:41
Speaker 7: confidence or made me feel inferior. When I got John Gruden,
• 50:46
Speaker 7: he took my game to the absolute highest, which is
• 50:49
Speaker 7: probably why I was okay with my career ending. John
• 50:52
Speaker 7: Gruden told me, you know, you know enough about defenses,
• 50:55
Speaker 7: and you know enough about defensive backs study other receivers
• 51:00
Speaker 7: so you can incorporate what they do into your game.
• 51:03
Speaker 7: I mean, just imagine, I'm coming off a year where
• 51:07
Speaker 7: I led the league and catch his yards and touchdown
• 51:10
Speaker 7: and I got John Gruden telling me, we're going to
• 51:12
Speaker 7: do this well in leading the league and catches yards
• 51:16
Speaker 7: and touchdowns. I said in an NFL record which I
• 51:18
Speaker 7: broke under John Gruden. So learning how to follow. And
• 51:23
Speaker 7: John Gruden is a small white quarterback from Dayton, you know,
• 51:26
Speaker 7: quarterback of Dayton, So what does he know about playing receiver?
• 51:29
  Speaker 6: You know?
• 51:30
Speaker 7: But when you learn to follow, you understand that they
• 51:33
Speaker 7: got jobs to do and that they're in your life
• 51:35
Speaker 7: for a reason. So the biggest thing is is I'm
• 51:38
Speaker 7: here for a reason. I'm not here only because I
• 51:41
Speaker 7: wanted to and calls one of my best friends, I'm
• 51:44
Speaker 7: here for a reason. So I think what I'm saying
• 51:47
Speaker 7: on these airways is supposed to be heard by someone.
• 51:51
Speaker 7: And so what I got to remember is don't mess
• 51:54
Speaker 7: this up. You know, you got a truth to tell.
• 51:57
Speaker 7: Tell the truth. I don't need to exalt my self anymore.
• 52:01
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 52:02
  Speaker 7: I got a gold jacket that I didn't want, but
• 52:04
Speaker 7: I got it. I got a chance to play in
• 52:06
Speaker 7: the NFL, which is the only thing I ever wanted
• 52:08
Speaker 7: to do. So in giving back some of the knowledge,
• 52:12
Speaker 7: this is some of the things that I have to do.
• 52:15
  Speaker 6: Love it.
• 52:16
Speaker 4: And you know, to your point in kind of closing
• 52:19
  Speaker 4: this out, but.
• 52:21
Speaker 3: Pete Carroll was that guy for me, and hearing you talk,
• 52:27
Speaker 3: I can I can relate to what Pete was for me.
• 52:31
Speaker 3: And it's it's amazing when you get that guy that
• 52:36
Speaker 3: you're hearing and you're like everything that he says you
• 52:40
Speaker 3: can you can equate to it, and like it's like,
• 52:43
Speaker 3: oh I can do this, let me change this and
• 52:47
Speaker 3: do it this way.
• 52:48
Speaker 4: And it changed my whole career.
• 52:53
Speaker 3: And when you find that, and I'm gonna say, if
• 52:56
Speaker 3: you find it anywhere, if you can find a person
• 52:58
Speaker 3: that you can see, you will, you will.
• 53:01
Speaker 6: They're in your life. The problem is is you're.
• 53:04
Speaker 7: Coaching me and Hollis is telling me, Man, Carl, don't
• 53:07
Speaker 7: know what he's talking about.
• 53:09
Speaker 4: You need to be you need to be outside shape,
• 53:12
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 53:12
Speaker 7: So now I'm getting information from four different people.
• 53:16
Speaker 6: Now what am I? What am I going to do?
• 53:18
Speaker 7: So when you learn to follow, I'm going to give
• 53:21
Speaker 7: Lisa her do you know what, Whatever I need to
• 53:24
Speaker 7: do in TV or radio to be better, she's doing it.
• 53:28
Speaker 7: So why don't I watch her when she don't think
• 53:30
Speaker 7: I'm watching? Why don't I listen to how she speaks
• 53:33
Speaker 7: when she makes a point?
• 53:34
  Speaker 6: You know?
• 53:35
Speaker 7: And and the thing is is learning to public speak
• 53:39
Speaker 7: like and and what I attempted to do in my
• 53:42
Speaker 7: speech on Saturday was I wanted to I wanted to
• 53:49
Speaker 7: come out serious and explain this ain't about me. This
• 53:54
Speaker 7: gold jacket is not about me. Okay, I got what
• 53:57
Speaker 7: I wanted. I got to play, That's all I want it.
• 54:00
Speaker 7: This is for my family and my friends that made
• 54:03
Speaker 7: the journey. I want you to understand how important it
• 54:06
  Speaker 7: was for them.
• 54:08
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 54:09
Speaker 7: So in doing that learning to follow, I was just
• 54:12
Speaker 7: showing people or trying to tell people, and how I
• 54:15
Speaker 7: spoke because your voice inflection tells you this is serious.
• 54:20
Speaker 6: Might need to take might need to And then.
• 54:24
Speaker 7: Before we go too far over the edge of the seriousness,
• 54:28
Speaker 7: you know, my brother said that last time we were
• 54:31
Speaker 7: here that he was the only player in the Hall
• 54:33
Speaker 7: of Fame that could say this, that he's the second
• 54:35
Speaker 7: best player in his own family.
• 54:37
Speaker 6: While I agree with that statement.
• 54:41
Speaker 7: So now instead of you falling over the edge, let
• 54:44
Speaker 7: me bring it back and then you know and and
• 54:48
Speaker 7: so you have something to say, and you want to
• 54:52
Speaker 7: you want to be heard, and that's a problem. That's
• 54:56
Speaker 7: your job is to say it, whether you hear it
• 54:58
Speaker 7: now or tomorrow. I'm not here to change your mind,
• 55:02
Speaker 7: but I'm here to get but naked in your mind.
• 55:04
Speaker 6: So when you driving home tonight you'd be like, You'll
• 55:08
  Speaker 6: be like.
• 55:09
Speaker 4: Wow, he striking this all out here.
• 55:13
Speaker 7: But I'm like, is when you get in people's minds,
• 55:19
Speaker 7: it's not going to affect them right now. It's not
• 55:22
Speaker 7: my job. My job is to tell you. I'm a messenger.
• 55:25
Speaker 7: Let me tell you this. I'm not telling you to
• 55:27
Speaker 7: do it my way. I'm telling you so you can
• 55:31
Speaker 7: figure out how to do it your way. Because what
• 55:34
Speaker 7: I had was is I had some really strong men
• 55:37
Speaker 7: that I followed, and the guys that I talked about,
• 55:40
Speaker 7: and Buddy and Sherman and Coach Hall and Coach McCall
• 55:43
Speaker 7: I had some really strong women that I got a
• 55:46
Speaker 7: chance to follow. I mean, when I first got to
• 55:49
Speaker 7: my first Pro Bowl, carl adopted me. Hey man, you know,
• 55:53
Speaker 7: you hang out with us. We're gonna do this, this
• 55:55
Speaker 7: and this. You know where he could have easily ignored
• 55:58
  Speaker 7: me because I'm a new v I'm a first time
• 56:01
Speaker 7: and he didn't. And that just showed me that I
• 56:04
Speaker 7: could be that, you know, I could just be me
• 56:07
Speaker 7: and enjoy meeting new people.
• 56:09
Speaker 6: And I mean and meeting him.
• 56:11
Speaker 7: I got to know Donna, I got to know Carlton,
• 56:14
Speaker 7: I got to know Nay, his sisters, and his mom
• 56:16
Speaker 7: and his dad. I got indoctrinated into the family. And
• 56:21
Speaker 7: so just because of him being who he is. And
• 56:25
Speaker 7: so I think what we have done a horrible job
• 56:28
Speaker 7: of is my daughter didn't have an opinion until probably eighteen,
• 56:37
Speaker 7: because you only get an opinion if you're paying bills
• 56:41
Speaker 7: or you've got responsibilities. Now I learned to follow that way,
• 56:47
Speaker 7: so I can lead that way now. But all the
• 56:50
Speaker 7: lessons I learned and learning to follow, I was hoping
• 56:53
Speaker 7: to use on my brother. And it's so funny that
• 56:59
Speaker 7: everybody used to say, you know, be your own man. Shannon,
• 57:01
Speaker 7: stop trying to be like him. Shannon, Look, Shannon, you
• 57:04
Speaker 7: your own guy man, live your own life.
• 57:06
Speaker 6: And I it dawned on me. He didn't follow me.
• 57:12
Speaker 7: I followed him because everything I did had his face
• 57:17
  Speaker 7: on it.
• 57:18
Speaker 6: So I ain't leading him, following him.
• 57:21
Speaker 7: And so you know, our relationship as brothers, we never fought,
• 57:27
Speaker 7: never been in a fight. We talk every day, We
• 57:31
Speaker 7: talk about most things. I got an older sister that
• 57:34
Speaker 7: he'll talk about stuff with also that he doesn't talk
• 57:37
Speaker 7: with me. But the thing is that the dynamic havn't changed.
• 57:40
Speaker 7: Once you're in, you're in. You know you're my brother.
• 57:43
Speaker 7: So if my brother didn't play in the NFL and
• 57:46
Speaker 7: was a trash collector, guess what he'd be. A trash
• 57:48
Speaker 7: collector driving a Mercedes living in an eight thousand square
• 57:51
Speaker 7: foot house. If my life would have been the same
• 57:54
Speaker 7: because I can't help MS or the American Cancer Society
• 57:59
Speaker 7: or American Heart Association, I can't help them. If my
• 58:04
Speaker 7: family is struggling, and I can do something about it.
• 58:06
Speaker 7: So you know, family is most important. You know friends
• 58:09
Speaker 7: are most important, most importantly though they're all done out
• 58:14
Speaker 7: of love. So you got to make sure you know
• 58:16
Speaker 7: I love Carlee, and Donna knows I love Carly, and
• 58:19
Speaker 7: because I love carl Lee, I love Donna. So that
• 58:23
Speaker 7: is the premise on who I am and how I
• 58:27
Speaker 7: was raised, and that's why I could have fun playing football,
• 58:31
Speaker 7: I could have fun doing TV. I tried to have
• 58:35
Speaker 7: fun this weekend at the Hall of Fame. It's difficult.
• 58:38
Speaker 7: It's hard, you know, because I never wanted this, so
• 58:42
  Speaker 7: I don't understand it yet. I don't understand what happened
• 58:45
  Speaker 7: to me.
• 58:45
  Speaker 6: But I'm learning.
• 58:47
Speaker 7: Like I said, I took a day yesterday to kind
• 58:49
Speaker 7: of go back over everything. But I'm learning how to
• 58:53
Speaker 7: be a Hall of Famer. In my mind, there's not
• 58:55
Speaker 7: a certain way you got to be. But I'm just
• 58:57
Speaker 7: learning to accept, you know, the congratulations and the admiration
• 59:01
  Speaker 7: because it's not why I did it. But I don't
• 59:04
Speaker 7: understand that. Carl and I had a conversation. I hope
• 59:08
Speaker 7: I'm going over. Carl and I had had a conversation
• 59:18
Speaker 7: about I never understood. We play a team sport. We're
• 59:23
Speaker 7: four and twelve. Hollis is our team MVP. Did he
• 59:28
Speaker 7: do something I did? As you know, if we play
• 59:32
Speaker 7: a team sport, we went as a team. We lose
• 59:34
Speaker 7: as a team, but you're the MVP. But I equated
• 59:39
Speaker 7: that to like a participation trophy. You know, we're going
• 59:42
Speaker 7: to try and build morale and spirit. So Carl, you
• 59:46
Speaker 7: gave up four touchdowns, but you were the defensive MVP.
• 59:50
Speaker 6: And you know, I never liked or understood that.
• 59:54
Speaker 7: I'm like, guess what I'm doing, what I want to do,
• 59:56
Speaker 7: and you're going to recognize me for doing what? Because
• 1:00:00
Speaker 7: if you're recognizing me being four and twelve and being
• 1:00:03
Speaker 7: in the same room with these other guys, what are
• 1:00:06
Speaker 7: they thinking? What have you done to them? And so
• 1:00:10
Speaker 7: I've never enjoyed recognition, and so I've actually tried to
• 1:00:14
Speaker 7: shy away or stay away from it as much as possible.
• 1:00:17
Speaker 7: But you know, this is one of those things that
• 1:00:20
Speaker 7: I had no control over, didn't have a vote, and
• 1:00:24
Speaker 7: I was dealing with eye issues that I really wanted
• 1:00:27
Speaker 7: to get sight back in my right eye. I can't
• 1:00:29
Speaker 7: see out of my right eye right now as I'm
• 1:00:31
Speaker 7: sitting here, and so I never really got to.
• 1:00:34
Speaker 6: The level of, wow, you know how big this is.
• 1:00:38
Speaker 7: So hopefully one day, you know, I've asked God to
• 1:00:41
Speaker 7: let me experience what it's supposed to feel like not
• 1:00:46
Speaker 7: for everyone of us. But what is this supposed to
• 1:00:48
Speaker 7: feel like? I want to I want to get that.
• 1:00:50
Speaker 8: I think I think you know to your point, we
• 1:00:53
Speaker 8: all here for a reason, as you articulated, and seeing
• 1:00:56
Speaker 8: you and your brother on that stage that means the
• 1:00:59
Speaker 8: world to a lot of us. I have a little brother, uh,
• 1:01:02
Speaker 8: you know, talking about your story of how you came
• 1:01:05
Speaker 8: up and just today expressing the mentality that you had
• 1:01:10
Speaker 8: in order to just you know, move to where you
• 1:01:13
Speaker 8: eventually moved to. I think you know this conversation, it
• 1:01:17
Speaker 8: means a lot to a lot of people. And I
• 1:01:19
Speaker 8: think there is a lot of lessons that even I'm
• 1:01:22
Speaker 8: getting out of this, you know that I'm going to
• 1:01:24
Speaker 8: apply to my career. So it's you may not see
• 1:01:28
Speaker 8: it now, but I think again, just having that image
• 1:01:30
Speaker 8: of you and your brother super impactful.
• 1:01:33
Speaker 6: Means a lot to this cheeseheadstor all right, well.
• 1:01:38
Speaker 3: Well we've accomplished, and so let me let me say
• 1:01:44
Speaker 3: something to you, my brother okay, chasing you around and
• 1:01:55
Speaker 3: you went back to the Pro Bowl, and I remember
• 1:01:58
  Speaker 3: those conversations.
• 1:01:59
Speaker 4: I remember remember the fun.
• 1:02:01
  Speaker 6: We had, and.
• 1:02:05
Speaker 3: I never really saw it in the manner in which
• 1:02:08
Speaker 3: you took it right like I just was, you know,
• 1:02:11
Speaker 3: we just connected. But of every player that I've ever
• 1:02:18
Speaker 3: met in my career from anywhere, the one guy that
• 1:02:26
Speaker 3: mattered the most to me, the one guy that I
• 1:02:30
Speaker 3: tried and in spite of your your standoffish way trying
• 1:02:36
Speaker 3: to avoid me, I wanted this. And when I say
• 1:02:44
Speaker 3: this this for you, I wanted that jacket for you.
• 1:02:48
Speaker 3: I wanted that jacket probably I won't say more than
• 1:02:52
Speaker 3: anybody in your family, but anybody outside of your family brought.
• 1:02:55
Speaker 3: I wanted that and I wanted it because I knew.
• 1:03:00
  Speaker 4: I knew.
• 1:03:03
Speaker 3: The guy that I chased around that number eighty four
• 1:03:08
Speaker 3: in green, who who kept laughing, laying on the ground laughing,
