- 1:44[SPEAKER_03]: Today, my guest legendary animator, Gendi Tartakovsky.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_03]: Born in Moscow, raised in Chicago, he's the mind behind Dexter's laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars, Clone Wars, and Primal.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_03]: The dialogue-free caveman epic that proves you don't need words when you have Saber II Tigers and Arturial Spray.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's the guy that studios call to save animated projects.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, Hotel Transylvania owes him its entire personality.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_03]: And he's been quietly pushing the limits of TV animation while making it look effortless.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_03]: He's back and something that's even new for him though.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_03]: That's a new Netflix film called Fixed.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_03]: It's a ranchy, seventeen year in the making adult animated comedy about a good dog's wild, final twenty-four hours before being neutered.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_03]: Gennie's gonna get into the pitch's Seinfeld feature origins.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_03]: White dogs made the best cast, pushing boundaries without crossing his own comedic lines, and how Idris Elba went full James Bond balls with his voice performance.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_03]: He'll also reflect on the long fight to get adult animation in feature form, and why this might be the perfect time for its return.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_03]: All that's in much more as we talk fixed out now on Netflix.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Gindi Tartakovsky.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, have you answered all the questions today?
- 3:05[SPEAKER_03]: Are there any left?
- 3:06[SPEAKER_03]: There's some around that haven't been asked yet.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_03]: All the pressures on you now.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_03]: All the pressures on me.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_03]: Okay with that.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_03]: Especially when it's listen, this has been so much fun to watch with fixed.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_03]: So let me be one of the ones today to congratulate you.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_03]: So I guess we started to be getting, right?
- 3:23[SPEAKER_03]: As I, as I understand the pitch of this sort of happened in a light bulb moment with another pitch.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_03]: Is that right?
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: It really did.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's the inception of the idea is was actually the characters.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: And they're all based on my childhood friends.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I was because they make me laugh so much just like any, you know, friend group usually, especially if you, if your friends with the same people as your kid or high school.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: And so I was like, can I translate and exaggerate it into animated adults?
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so I developed these characters.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: They were even different characters at the time.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like, one was a pig and a bear and whatever they were.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: And so then I took that idea and I was like, maybe it's just a road trip movie, like who cares?
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's about the characters.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: That was really my, the high concept pitch was, it's like a sign-filled feature, right?
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's really a movie about characters who cares about the plot.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I took it to Sony Animation and they loved it.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: They totally got it.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: But then they go, look, you still need a concept around this.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, perhaps even an adult concept.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like lightning struck me instantly.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't even remember thinking about it.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: And this doesn't, you know, it doesn't happen a lot.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: I put all.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then I said, oh, well, what if they're dogs and one of them finds out is going to get neutered in the morning?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: right and everybody laughed right so it's the best elevator pitch ever and it's the last night out for the dogs and that's it and then they pretty much just bothered right there and we started developing it.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_03]: Let me say too though I'm a big fan of the
- 5:01[SPEAKER_03]: if you want to call it plotless movie like there's a lot of great movies that survive great you know on the road style right right right you know so um i i would have also been interested in that movie just the same but getting to the new to the thing which which i thought i thought you know i i i know there's no connection to your time at two stupid dogs but there's a really fun little connection there if you want to look at the history but
- 5:25[SPEAKER_03]: but the the world of dogs it's so rich and you play into every one of those things I have a dog we have a dog here and everything that you said is like we've said that about the dog I mean like why do we stay like why does it work so well
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: even more than if you would take it as you said, like multiple animals.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think the dogs are more accessible.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: Just like, you know, there's obviously a lot of pet owners, right?
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of dog people, pet people, cat people.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's a giant market.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think it made the movie, I think easily get a book, right?
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: And, and then yeah, I'm the same.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I give my dogs voices.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: right and we always talk about what they're thinking at this at the different moments when they're barking at each other what are they really saying right if they're you know they're marking a tree in the next dog marks the tree it's like all this really funny behavioral stuff that was like oh this could be a whole segment of jokes in this movie is just you know the dog behavior and what our point of view on it is comedically and so that felt really good
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a lot of weights.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's that accessibility.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like I always talk about that a lot.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, from my earliest work of Dexter, the show was really about a brother and sister relationship.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we got right.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know, everything else is is bonus.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: But that's what people like, oh, yeah, I know these feelings.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: And then everything else is gravy.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Gendi Tartakovsky.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_03]: but you get to add in the adult humor, the very adult humor, which is fun to read the comment section on your stuff, because there's some broke lectures out there who was not expecting this from you.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_03]: But it's also like, I don't know, man.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_03]: It sort of feels like we've been in a conservative time for comedy.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_03]: And because this reminds me of some of the stuff that we would have traded back in the eighties and nineties or something like that.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know if that even crosses your mind because I'm seeing signs of life, I guess, with Ted and even the naked gun to a point of doing that stuff.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_03]: But were you at all timid to go into this world this far kind of at this time?
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: Well, no, I mean, I tried to go into it in two thousand eight, which is even a different time and for animation especially and it's like, you know, we always believe that wise animation any different, you know, but it's the stigma that animation carries with it that it's still thought as as as kid-father.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: right even to the state and the success of adult animation on Netflix on adult swim on hulu everywhere it's so popular right that why can't it translate into a movie length
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: right either theatrically or streaming.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_01]: And so I've never had an issue with it.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: It was just about, you know, having other people believe in it and pay for it.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, you know, and so we always existed.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said, like, you know, like I remember when, like I don't know, I think we're probably the similar age.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: But when Akira came out, Akira was like this VHS that went from place to place, and you saw it, and other people told you about it.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: And it's this adult action drama, crazy, great.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: But outside of America, everybody's already there.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: We're just stuck in this place.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I always believe it takes one show.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: to break through, right?
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not going to put that pressure on the face, but I mean, the hope is like, maybe it'll, you know, creek the door open for me to get another one in, you know, and then all of a sudden it can become something or somebody else can break it in.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_03]: For me, by the way, I think it was heavy metal was the one that got passed to me, you know, something like that, which is it's own?
- 9:33[SPEAKER_03]: especially for being a younger person.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_03]: But all of this would leave me to say that you know you you get to go far.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_03]: Sure we see a lot of testicles in fix but but if every dog has a stay every dog has a but hole on this one and how many different ways can you draw a doggy but hole?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: We drew them so simple.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: They're all a circle with an asterisk in it and that's it.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's really it's really it's funny how people are so shocked by it and I guess I'm just a sensitized but I think kind of what happened was we have this kind of classic nostalgic animation style that it starts out like oh yeah this feels nice right to get into this world
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: and then all of a sudden it goes to this contemporary, you know, audacious, ranchy comedy, and that's very graphic.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: Even though there's no dog penises, there's nothing really dirty.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_03]: That's the interesting thing, by the way, is that we get balls, we get about holes, but you never get the lipstick.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's it.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think because that takes the rating somewhere else or what?
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that crossed the line for me, like I don't want to see that.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to feel like I'm doing something.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_01]: I keep sure, you know, like my sensibility is not that.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was kind of the our line that we never crossed.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so, yeah, so it's all in your imagination.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and then we would argue like, I remember we had our first screening and, you know, the first act and I, you know, I storyboarded most of it and it was all, you know, but some balls all over the place and the executives and some artists, we all watched it and the first reaction was like, wow, there's so much.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and we had this thirty minute discussion of, is it too much?
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: Is it not enough?
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are we doing?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: Because you can't measure it to anything else, right?
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I said, look, number one, it's out there in real life, right?
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: And you, you notice it.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't want them a dark part to go.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: There it is.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: You don't stare at it, right?
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: But you see, we see them.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: You see, I'm sorry.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's just so normal.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm like, why can't the audience accept it as well?
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: And that was my pitch on it.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: And it just stays funny, luckily.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's, you know, we all turned into twelve-year-olds again at some point in some of that, just the stays funny.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Merneth with Gindi Tartakovsky.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's pop a dog, anyone real?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you're the first person who caught that and said it.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: It is when I met my wife, it's her, I guess my father-in-law, her dad.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: And when I first met him, he had a giant mastiff.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: This dog named Dreyfus and I've never seen a big dog.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: I've never had a dog in my whole life.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: I grew up in a park and this dog comes at me and it's like, you know, two hundred pounds, you know, up to my, up to my waist and it's so intimidating and then I bonded with him like crazy like we became besties.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and because of him, we started to get dogs.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: We got big dogs initially.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: And so, dog is his name.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so, we named the vet clinic after him, because he's kind of the one who kind of introduced me to these amazing dogs.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_03]: That's one of those moments when you see it like that's gotta be something because you could call it anything.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: Gotta be something.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, I love that.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_03]: I love that.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, and and some of those actors, I mean, Adam divine, like I can't imagine now that voice being in anyone else, but but Idris, especially getting him to deliver those lines that must have been fun.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, and he loved it.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: And like listen, back when we were making it, he was in line in the conversation for becoming the next James Bond, right?
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, there's no way he's going to do this voice, right?
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: and and sure enough I sent him the drawings and the script and he loved it and he hasn't really done a lot of comedy right so he embraced it and he was so excited and I think initially like envisioned Rocco like more of like a creep Clint Eastwood type of voice you know real low key so he's cool right like almost like adjacent state them
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then Idris goes like, oh, and he really big.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, it's so funny.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so just him.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm not going to, I'm not going to direct him to go anywhere else.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to let him be that guy.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: And he owned it.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it made it that character a little more unique.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: And he had the most amount of lines talking about balls.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: right with with all the different humanism that we had for that and and he loved it just loved it.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think we had one speech where we had five different ways we called it and he really just we was laughing and he really enjoyed it.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_03]: It's definitely one of my favorite characters I think in the whole thing and they're all great they're all great.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_03]: And what you've done with it, I mean, again, it's so much fun.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_03]: I will watch this again, and I'm sure I will watch this again.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_03]: And just knowing that you had to fight for something and that you stuck with it and that you saw it to the end, I think there was a fan online that called this here, a megalopolis, which I thought was pretty funny.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: But do you have a lot like like you're always I'm sure everybody's always working on ideas like do you have a lot of these on the back burner are there are there other things that you're like constantly fighting for is that how it works it kind of I think after unicorn that was I think one of my last ones that I got through there's still two or three that I'm kind of given up the fight for to agree because I think I've moved on just subject matter wise
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think all the stuff coming up are more fresher, newer ideas to keep, you know, to move on to the next phase.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there's some that are five years in already, like, and is it going to see the light of day?
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know, and I'm still trying to champion them.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's like this, you know, even though on all the Hollywood backstories, to all these different movies and, and sometimes it can happen like this and other times it's, you know, a decade of struggle to have
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: you know, somebody believe in you, you know, to do something different.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's the thing.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like I can sell a movie easily for the most part if I just go with the flow of what everybody else is doing, right?
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: But because I want to do something different, it's more challenging.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I've done enough that I can get in the door and start the conversation.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: and fixed to seventeen years to finally get it out there.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're heading towards the right direction, but it's still not an automatic.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, again, do what you got for us.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Let's do it.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_03]: You know, but those are the moments that make legends right there.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_03]: When you do get them, when you do something different, and that's what it takes, I'm so happy that you are doing what you do.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_03]: And we get all of these different projects.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_03]: Fixed is so much fun.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_03]: I so appreciate what you do.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_03]: And thank you so much for taking the time to talk about it.
