- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, what's up?
- 0:00Speaker 2: You're watching for all nerds, and on this episode we
- 0:02Speaker 2: welcome Jeff Trammel, the head writer of Your Friendly Neighborhood
- 0:05Speaker 2: Spider Man.
- 0:06Speaker 1: He talks to us why your criticians need nothing? What's up? Fan? Fan?
- 0:21Speaker 2: We know you all watch the first season of Your
- 0:24Speaker 2: Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man, so we had to bring a
- 0:26Speaker 2: very special guest, a former professional wrestler, a man who
- 0:31Speaker 2: has written dozens of television shows, one of them being
- 0:34Speaker 2: The legendary Craig of the Creek, and then, of course
- 0:37Speaker 2: the head writer on the one and only Friendly Neighborhood
- 0:40Speaker 2: Spider Man. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Jeff trammelow beautiful intro.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Of course.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Of course, do you miss wrestling?
- 0:51Speaker 1: By the way, I gotta ask.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Weirdly, I do. Uh, there's a part of me that
- 0:57Speaker 3: does miss it. It hurts. So now when I'm like, oh,
- 1:03Speaker 3: you punction the base, that's a good job too, right,
- 1:07Speaker 3: But yeah, I think there's part of it. There's parts
- 1:09Speaker 3: of it that I do miss.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Okay, I get it. I'm probably going to come.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Back to that because I usually like a huge wrestling fan,
- 1:15Speaker 2: so we might talk about that a little bit, but
- 1:17Speaker 2: of course we wanted to talk to you about what
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm gonna just presume to be the most legendary animation
- 1:23Speaker 2: on Disney Plus right now, because I mean, despite all
- 1:27Speaker 2: odds and despite the day sayers, this is actually a
- 1:29Speaker 2: very successful show. People are actually very happy with what
- 1:32Speaker 2: you've come up with, and I think you should be
- 1:34Speaker 2: proud of that for real. And you know, we've we've
- 1:38Speaker 2: actually talked to you on the show before when you
- 1:39Speaker 2: were doing Craig of the Creek and that's been a
- 1:41Speaker 2: big I want to say art piece almost, but that's
- 1:46Speaker 2: like been a big part of a lot of people's lives, right,
- 1:48Speaker 2: and how that's impacted people. And you know, when you're
- 1:51Speaker 2: going into all your different projects, are you really thinking
- 1:54Speaker 2: about how you're impacting people?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Like do people?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Some people think they want to do these types of
- 1:59Speaker 2: things that they want to create a legacy. Some people
- 2:01Speaker 2: are like, I just want to do this because it's fun,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, because I like these characters, Like what drives
- 2:05Speaker 2: you to make these decisions and decide, you know what,
- 2:08Speaker 2: I want to create this particular.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Story, this mixture both honestly, you know, like anyone who's
- 2:16Speaker 3: a comic fan is going to be just so excited
- 2:21Speaker 3: to dig into this world, to get to play in
- 2:23Speaker 3: this kind of like Spider Man sandbox and even beyond that,
- 2:25Speaker 3: like the Marvel Sandbox. But also, like, you know, I
- 2:29Speaker 3: am very aware of like what a show can mean
- 2:33Speaker 3: to somebody, especially coming from the Creek, especially knowing that
- 2:37Speaker 3: like so many people felt like they saw themselves in
- 2:39Speaker 3: that show, and how impactful it was just for like
- 2:44Speaker 3: not just kids, but teens and adults and everyone. So
- 2:47Speaker 3: that's something that I was definitely carrying with me when
- 2:50Speaker 3: I came over here to make this show, and that
- 2:53Speaker 3: definitely led to a lot of the choices that we
- 2:57Speaker 3: made early on, you know, me wanting to like just
- 3:00Speaker 3: make sure that New York felt more diverse and more
- 3:04Speaker 3: realistic to what it is today, and just making sure
- 3:06Speaker 3: that you see like black and brown faces amongst all
- 3:09Speaker 3: the other faces, and gender swapping and racewipping characters to
- 3:13Speaker 3: make sure that like it wasn't just kind of homogeneous
- 3:17Speaker 3: like the sixties comics, you know. So that's definitely something
- 3:20Speaker 3: that I brought with me and something that I think
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'll continue to carry with me for the rest of
- 3:24Speaker 3: my career.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And that's really so interesting because one creator we talked
- 3:28Speaker 1: to you're speaking about comics is Karen Gillan, and when
- 3:32Speaker 1: he was talking about creating The Wicked and Evine, he
- 3:34Speaker 1: was like, I just wanted it to like the London.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You know that I pretty much grew up in. I
- 3:39Speaker 1: didn't think about making the characters of diverse. I just
- 3:42Speaker 1: wanted it to like the London on I knew. And
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's really interesting because on Friendly Night Spider Man, you
- 3:48Speaker 1: use like the art style similar to like the Dick
- 3:51Speaker 1: Coe and the classic Spider Man, but you updated it
- 3:55Speaker 1: with you know, diversity inclusion, and it just feels naturalistic.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Like you said, it just feels like I mean, we
- 4:03Speaker 1: both live in New York, me and Tadtowna right now,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and this is the New York of today. There's no
- 4:08Speaker 1: denying that anyone who lives in New York would see that.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So thank you, Yeah, thank thank you. I appreciate that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear that it's reflective of you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: New York for you guys as well.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, And since Ben had mentioned the animation style, I'm
- 4:22Speaker 2: a big animation fan in general, Like I will prefer
- 4:26Speaker 2: watching something animated in all animation styles before, like live
- 4:29Speaker 2: action half the time, just because I just feel like
- 4:31Speaker 2: it's just another level of expression that is just so
- 4:34Speaker 2: beautiful to me. And this animation style caught me right
- 4:37Speaker 2: away because he mentioned the Dickco style like the Silver
- 4:41Speaker 2: Age comics, but then like there's like almost like a three.
- 4:44Speaker 1: DCG to it and all of that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Like one, I wanted to ask you directly exactly what
- 4:51Speaker 2: technique did you guys do? Like I could tell the
- 4:53Speaker 2: layer of multiple things, but one and then secondly, did
- 4:57Speaker 2: you get to select those animation style you just kind
- 5:00Speaker 2: of in after the fact?
- 5:02Speaker 3: Great, okay, great questions throughout the bet In terms of
- 5:06Speaker 3: the style, I was there from the beginning as we
- 5:08Speaker 3: were figuring out these styles, you know, Like I came
- 5:10Speaker 3: over to Marvel, they had an idea of like what
- 5:13Speaker 3: the show could be. As we started to build it,
- 5:15Speaker 3: a lot of meetings were like the visitav team kind
- 5:18Speaker 3: of presenting ideas like oh, well, here's you know, here's
- 5:21Speaker 3: this artist take, here's some others and so on, and
- 5:23Speaker 3: as we started to evolve it, it was really like,
- 5:26Speaker 3: what what can we do that will allow us to
- 5:29Speaker 3: stand out from all the other animated Spider Man projects
- 5:32Speaker 3: as well as like you know, Spider Versus doing so
- 5:35Speaker 3: many incredible things, but what you know, when you see
- 5:39Speaker 3: our Peter in a lineup, how are you going to
- 5:41Speaker 3: know him? So in trying to find something unique, we
- 5:45Speaker 3: went back to the beginning and we have just so
- 5:49Speaker 3: many amazing artists, but our lead character designer, Leo Romero,
- 5:52Speaker 3: does fantastic work of like perfectly capturing like that Ditco style,
- 5:59Speaker 3: that Kirby style, and then modernizing it. So once we
- 6:04Speaker 3: figured out like that was where we wanted to go,
- 6:06Speaker 3: it was very much like, Okay, look to the sixties
- 6:08Speaker 3: for inspiration, but again, how can we update it to
- 6:11Speaker 3: not feel like super dated or very off putting for
- 6:14Speaker 3: like a younger audience, but also there's something there that
- 6:17Speaker 3: if you grew up reading comics or if you're an
- 6:19Speaker 3: older fan, there's something to latch onto. So that was yeah,
- 6:23Speaker 3: very early on we were like, okay, this is kind
- 6:25Speaker 3: of our look, and then started modernizing it and kind
- 6:28Speaker 3: of pushing ourselves with that being the north star in
- 6:32Speaker 3: terms of like what we are able to do. We
- 6:35Speaker 3: work with two studios overseas, Polygon Pictures in Tokyo and
- 6:40Speaker 3: CGCG and Type A, and they are geniuses basically like
- 6:48Speaker 3: our entire show is CG. It's a three D show
- 6:52Speaker 3: with a two D look, and that's you know, they
- 6:55Speaker 3: have these twos that allow us to kind of like
- 6:57Speaker 3: use that three D space. We can change certain things up.
- 7:00Speaker 3: We can you know, if we need to like recompose something,
- 7:03Speaker 3: we pop in and move the camera, which is just
- 7:06Speaker 3: such a time saver in terms of like if we
- 7:08Speaker 3: were doing a traditional two D show, but they're able
- 7:11Speaker 3: to give us a two D look. But also this,
- 7:15Speaker 3: like you said, kind of like a hybrid, which I
- 7:16Speaker 3: think is perfect for us as a show. That's like,
- 7:19Speaker 3: you want to feel like a comic book, but we
- 7:21Speaker 3: want to be able to have the kind of mobility
- 7:23Speaker 3: and luxuries of a three D show. So being able
- 7:26Speaker 3: to do that and being able to tell the story
- 7:28Speaker 3: and then you know, create our opening titles and then
- 7:32Speaker 3: in a CG show, oh we want to change the
- 7:35Speaker 3: suit that Peters wearing at this part of the titles,
- 7:38Speaker 3: we can pop in this asset of this spider man
- 7:41Speaker 3: and then it seamlessly works. It allows us so much
- 7:43Speaker 3: more freedom than if we had like hand drawn each
- 7:47Speaker 3: opening title. You know, we'd be like, well, we don't change.
- 7:49Speaker 1: That was and might spend the timeline considerably. Yeah, exactly. Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 1: And that just really led to me be because as
- 8:00Speaker 1: I was watching the finale, I was thinking, and as
- 8:03Speaker 1: I was watching the whole series, but then when I
- 8:05Speaker 1: was watching the finale, it hit me again. I wanted
- 8:07Speaker 1: to ask you how big of an influence was the
- 8:10Speaker 1: Spider Man PS five game on this series? Because I
- 8:14Speaker 1: felt it in a lot of ways, and that Spider
- 8:18Speaker 1: the you know what three games now from them are
- 8:20Speaker 1: to me, some of the greatest Spider Man storytelling, you know,
- 8:24Speaker 1: in history. And I was as, like I said, I
- 8:27Speaker 1: was watching the finale, I was like, oh my god,
- 8:28Speaker 1: please let them put this suit and this Peter into
- 8:31Speaker 1: the game. You know, I need this update soon. So
- 8:35Speaker 1: I just want to know how influential was it on
- 8:36Speaker 1: you in the writer's room.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Oh, like, I can't say enough, you know, Like, and
- 8:42Speaker 3: that's the thing, like everything, like there's sixty years of
- 8:46Speaker 3: Spider Man stuff. Yeah, so it's like, yes, the game
- 8:49Speaker 3: is a huge influence. Yes, the movies are a huge influence,
- 8:51Speaker 3: the comics, all the shows like Ultimate Spider Man, the
- 8:56Speaker 3: PS two game, like everything, it's kind of like and
- 9:00Speaker 3: there's a stamp from everything. You know, even Spider Man
- 9:02Speaker 3: the first Ramy film, like Beazza Time Sign in the
- 9:05Speaker 3: first episode, like there's so many little Easter eggs and
- 9:09Speaker 3: stuff because we just love Spider Man and there's so
- 9:12Speaker 3: much Spider Man to love. But yeah, definitely those games
- 9:14Speaker 3: are huge influence. I would play those games all the
- 9:17Speaker 3: time as I was like coming up with the story
- 9:20Speaker 3: of the show, just trying to like, okay, I want
- 9:21Speaker 3: to swing around New York and just kind of like
- 9:23Speaker 3: think about you know. So it's a huge influence those games.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I would flip if they put our suits in that game.
- 9:32Speaker 3: We have a few conversations about it.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Oh kay, thank you, thank you, thank you for letting
- 9:39Speaker 1: me know. Please tell me at least you talk to
- 9:41Speaker 1: someone please.
- 9:42Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I'm totally down. It sounded like they
- 9:44Speaker 3: were like, yeah, this would be dope. So I don't
- 9:46Speaker 3: know what that means for the future. If we're in that,
- 9:49Speaker 3: if we're in Marvel Rivals, if we're in anything. I'm
- 9:52Speaker 3: more than happy.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I feel like they got to put you
- 9:57Speaker 1: in the game because the way they add the different
- 10:00Speaker 1: suits for their different animation styles to that game has
- 10:03Speaker 1: been perfection. And I just would I'd be I was
- 10:05Speaker 1: sitting there thinking about like, oh, I'd be playing it
- 10:07Speaker 1: writ again. I'd have to play the whole game again,
- 10:09Speaker 1: did it.
- 10:10Speaker 2: You know, one of the other brilliant things you've done,
- 10:12Speaker 2: besides just the look and fiel of the show, is
- 10:14Speaker 2: the flip on some of the characters. Like you know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: that's the big obvious with Norman, which is he's hilarious
- 10:20Speaker 2: to me, Like every time he's on screen on his BS,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I'm like dying like every time because I'm like, I
- 10:26Speaker 2: can't believe this guy. But it's also kind of like
- 10:29Speaker 2: the more things change, the more things say the same,
- 10:30Speaker 2: because when I see these catchers and when they start talking,
- 10:34Speaker 2: and even though the story is different than what a
- 10:37Speaker 2: lot of people used to at the end of the day,
- 10:39Speaker 2: the core personality and the core motivations are really still there.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I saw right through Norman from the beginning. I was like, oh, no,
- 10:48Speaker 2: this guy's a problem, right, And even though he's he
- 10:51Speaker 2: has that air of like he's like, oh he's so
- 10:54Speaker 2: nice and whatever you want, Peter, it's up to you.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You feel the undercurrents of this is bad news, right.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So you know, you managed to bring like a deep
- 11:04Speaker 2: familiarity to a technically new character, and I think that's hard,
- 11:08Speaker 2: especially when people just on the surface level they see
- 11:10Speaker 2: somebody that looks a little different than what they're used to,
- 11:13Speaker 2: all of a sudden they have preconceived notions. So, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: I guess the mortal story here is kind of like
- 11:19Speaker 2: wait and see, But like, how do you respond to
- 11:23Speaker 2: that where people who see this and immediately they're like
- 11:26Speaker 2: kind of negative or anti against it, Like what do
- 11:29Speaker 2: you feel about the criticism against it? Are you just like, hey, guys,
- 11:32Speaker 2: wait and see, do you care about the criticism or
- 11:34Speaker 2: how do you how do you manage that?
- 11:37Speaker 3: I think it'd be easy to say no, I don't care.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I'm excited for this thing that
- 11:43Speaker 3: we've been working on for years to be out in
- 11:45Speaker 3: the world. And you know, when the response is very
- 11:48Speaker 3: much like hmm, I don't know about this or I'm
- 11:51Speaker 3: not interested, you know, like there's again, there's so much
- 11:54Speaker 3: Spider Man media. There's a lot to live up to.
- 11:57Speaker 3: But I have always been of the mind of, like,
- 12:00Speaker 3: this show is special. The team is putting in so
- 12:02Speaker 3: much work into it, and I know that, like, if
- 12:06Speaker 3: you sit down and watch it, there's a very good
- 12:09Speaker 3: chance that you're going to enjoy it. So I've always
- 12:11Speaker 3: been of the mind of like, Okay, you know, people
- 12:14Speaker 3: are going to see it. People like what's familiar, and
- 12:17Speaker 3: people are off put by new things or different things,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and that comes with everything, you know. The second time
- 12:24Speaker 3: Holand popped up in Civil War, people were like, oh
- 12:26Speaker 3: my god, yes, Spider Man. But also they were like, well,
- 12:28Speaker 3: it's not Toby, you know. So I think there's always
- 12:32Speaker 3: going to be an aspect of like, you know, this
- 12:35Speaker 3: is the thing I grew up with and I love it.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I'm guilty of it with the ninety series. I'm guilty
- 12:39Speaker 3: of it with Spectacular, you know. But I also try
- 12:42Speaker 3: to approach things with an open mind. And you know,
- 12:45Speaker 3: if someone comes to the show and they watch it
- 12:47Speaker 3: and they're like not for me, totally get that. But
- 12:49Speaker 3: at least give us the opportunity to win you over.
- 12:52Speaker 3: And I feel like so many people have done that
- 12:54Speaker 3: and have loved the show, or people are messaging me
- 12:57Speaker 3: like's in my top three Spider Man shows. Favorite Spider Man,
- 13:00Speaker 3: this is this, this is that, and like that means
- 13:03Speaker 3: a lot because so much time and work have gone
- 13:06Speaker 3: into making this special and you know, at the end
- 13:09Speaker 3: of the day, Like I'm working on the show. I'm
- 13:12Speaker 3: a creator, I'm a storyteller, but I'm still a fan
- 13:14Speaker 3: of the character. So this is the character as I
- 13:18Speaker 3: would want to see him if they're doing something new.
- 13:20Speaker 3: So I think there's you know, there's a lot of
- 13:24Speaker 3: passion behind it that I think comes across in the show,
- 13:28Speaker 3: and I'm just I'm glad people are really enjoying it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, And like one thing, well, I mean, you told
- 13:36Speaker 1: a complete story in season one, and it's obvious that
- 13:40Speaker 1: you have so much love for the character and for
- 13:43Speaker 1: the history, and like you said, all the different media
- 13:47Speaker 1: that has gone into Spider Man over the years, and
- 13:49Speaker 1: theirs shout outs in Easter. It's to all these different things,
- 13:53Speaker 1: Like there's so many moments where I'm doing the Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 13:56Speaker 1: You know, I'm just like yo yo. At the same time,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I was also like, oh shit, Okay, that might lead
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Clone saga. Okay, that might lead it in them. Okay, Nico,
- 14:07Speaker 1: do some magicit, please.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Do some magic.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So it was like, what were some of the things
- 14:13Speaker 1: that you wanted to put in this season. Well, I
- 14:15Speaker 1: know you can't tell us what's coming up in season two.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But like, how did you make the choices to include
- 14:20Speaker 1: this and not include that, you know in season one
- 14:23Speaker 1: or season two.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It's hard. It's a lot of restraint, you know, Like
- 14:29Speaker 3: it's because I think that, you know, there's just stuff
- 14:32Speaker 3: I'm excited to do, but also being like, Okay, maybe
- 14:37Speaker 3: this is better as a slow burn. I think that's
- 14:39Speaker 3: the that's a lesson that I took away from like
- 14:41Speaker 3: Spectacular Spider. They are fantastic, and like, here's a character,
- 14:47Speaker 3: and they're gonna grow into this character. That's something that
- 14:49Speaker 3: I've always loved. I don't want to like episode two,
- 14:52Speaker 3: here's a Scorpion because you don't care. He's just like
- 14:55Speaker 3: a name at that point. By the time Scorpion shows
- 14:58Speaker 3: up in this show, you had enough time with him
- 15:01Speaker 3: to know this dude is bad news. So he's bad
- 15:05Speaker 3: news before he gets a tail. So that's kind of
- 15:10Speaker 3: like I always want to feel like the threats are
- 15:13Speaker 3: leveling up, so you know, maybe another show wouldn't be like, okay,
- 15:17Speaker 3: first villain, Spider Man face is but tane, But I
- 15:20Speaker 3: feel like that's the perfect like we're level This dude's
- 15:23Speaker 3: kind of an idiot. It's showing like he's going to
- 15:26Speaker 3: grow and kind of like evolve and the villains get
- 15:30Speaker 3: more dangerous as his world you know, kind of levels up,
- 15:33Speaker 3: he levels up with it. Yeah, so yeah, I mean, honestly,
- 15:38Speaker 3: it's just tempering those expectations and being able to build
- 15:41Speaker 3: this stuff. Like everybody sees Norman and are like, oh,
- 15:44Speaker 3: he's gonna go there, and by the end this by
- 15:48Speaker 3: the middle of the season, you're like, will you go there?
- 15:50Speaker 3: So just knowing that, like people are feeling that, I
- 15:53Speaker 3: think is a really fun way to approach these stories,
- 15:57Speaker 3: to kind of keep you on your toes. Wasn't again
- 15:59Speaker 3: a character. It's been around for sixty years, So there's
- 16:02Speaker 3: expectations that I want to subvert and then there's things
- 16:05Speaker 3: that we want to lean into. But the fact that
- 16:08Speaker 3: you never really know where we're going, I think it's nice,
- 16:11Speaker 3: just even like people seeing doctor Carla Connors and being like, oh,
- 16:15Speaker 3: oh right, I know where this is going, but also
- 16:21Speaker 3: how yeaheah, so that you know.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And she didn't know about Norman stuff, you know at
- 16:26Speaker 1: the end, so I'm like, oh, well, hey, maybe she'll
- 16:29Speaker 1: be a good lizard, you know, a good legit. That's
- 16:35Speaker 1: the most funniest thing I've heard Oh my goodness. Well,
- 16:40Speaker 1: you know, you spoke.
- 16:42Speaker 2: About surprises and also I was actually surprised that you
- 16:45Speaker 2: were even sometimes it's not that way, but you were
- 16:47Speaker 2: involved in like the art style and the decision making
- 16:50Speaker 2: in that way. Were you also involved in the vas
- 16:52Speaker 2: like Cole I mean okay, because I mean obviously you
- 16:56Speaker 2: talked a lot a lot in other interviews, but like
- 16:58Speaker 2: the inclusion of Coleman Mingo as Norman, like just beyond
- 17:04Speaker 2: beyond the pale when it comes to like phenomenal, stupendous,
- 17:08Speaker 2: like he's so flexible and he is so he has
- 17:12Speaker 2: the range right, So and honestly, everyone you know, you
- 17:15Speaker 2: have Hudson Pains and everybody else, but everyone really brings
- 17:18Speaker 2: it there all to this. So now that I know
- 17:21Speaker 2: that you had a hand in that, like now I
- 17:22Speaker 2: know it wasn't a surprise, Like did you already have
- 17:25Speaker 2: these people in mind for each catch as you were
- 17:27Speaker 2: writing them, as you were doing the inception or how
- 17:30Speaker 2: did that matching process come about?
- 17:33Speaker 3: You know some of them from the beginning. Yeah, like
- 17:36Speaker 3: I came to it. We worked with our casting director
- 17:39Speaker 3: Sarah Sherman, who's incredible, and you know, as we were
- 17:42Speaker 3: kind of like building out the world. I definitely had
- 17:45Speaker 3: ideas for like, oh, you know, right from the inception,
- 17:48Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I know who I want Harry
- 17:53Speaker 3: Osborne to be. So as I'm working on this, do
- 17:57Speaker 3: I have a voice in mind? And I had worked
- 17:58Speaker 3: with Zeno so much on Crack of the Creek. I
- 18:01Speaker 3: was like, well, Zeno would kind of be perfect. But
- 18:03Speaker 3: at the same time, there's a certain way Marvel operates,
- 18:06Speaker 3: so it wasn't like I was going to be like, Okay, cool, Xeno,
- 18:09Speaker 3: you're hairy. Now, Like, we still send out auditions, we
- 18:12Speaker 3: still go through make sure we can find you know,
- 18:14Speaker 3: because I might be wrong, maybe there's someone else that
- 18:17Speaker 3: embodies this role a little better. But so we went
- 18:20Speaker 3: through everything and then, like you know, of course, we
- 18:22Speaker 3: still got to the final point and Zino as our airy.
- 18:26Speaker 3: So there's definitely people that I came to this with
- 18:28Speaker 3: like an idea of like Okay, I think this person
- 18:31Speaker 3: would be great, but then they of course audition and
- 18:34Speaker 3: can back it up and prove themselves worthy of the role.
- 18:37Speaker 3: But yeah, like Coleman Domingo is unbelievable. I want to
- 18:45Speaker 3: take all the credit, but I can't. Our supervising producer
- 18:50Speaker 3: males Wire actually pitched Coleman because we were trying to like,
- 18:53Speaker 3: Norman is such a tough character because, like you said,
- 18:57Speaker 3: you're coming with preconceived notions. We all know Norman Osborne is.
- 19:01Speaker 3: This is a different Norman Osborn, and I know that
- 19:03Speaker 3: the second you see him, you're on guard because you're like,
- 19:07Speaker 3: this is bad news. So I need someone that can
- 19:10Speaker 3: like embody, that friendly nature, embody, that power embody, Like
- 19:15Speaker 3: if we go dark with him, can you lean into
- 19:17Speaker 3: this darkness? But also is there like a fatherly element
- 19:22Speaker 3: something that we can latch onto because you know you're
- 19:25Speaker 3: you're gonna come in with your guard up, but can
- 19:28Speaker 3: he convince you to lower it even slightly? So it's
- 19:33Speaker 3: a hard road to play, and Coleman is so effortlessly
- 19:39Speaker 3: good to where everything Norman says has like a double
- 19:44Speaker 3: meaning and you're like, oh my god, oh is this
- 19:47Speaker 3: that sounded scary? But it might have been friendly. So
- 19:51Speaker 3: it is very much that, and like he's he makes
- 19:55Speaker 3: it look easy, but also like he cares so much,
- 19:57Speaker 3: you know, Like when we went out to him, it
- 19:59Speaker 3: was like around the time he got nominated for Rusting,
- 20:03Speaker 3: and they were like, well, there's a very good chance.
- 20:05Speaker 3: He's very busy. There's no way he's gonna say yes
- 20:08Speaker 3: to this. And he immediately was like, yeah, I will
- 20:11Speaker 3: do this. I'm excited to do this. And he has
- 20:13Speaker 3: always like made time for us. He's always like just
- 20:18Speaker 3: absolutely crushed it each time. He is just phenomenal to
- 20:21Speaker 3: work with and he's like one of the nicest people
- 20:23Speaker 3: in the world too, So I couldn't be happy about
- 20:26Speaker 3: having him on the show.
- 20:28Speaker 1: That's great because one of my posts on that old
- 20:31Speaker 1: site that we don't really use anymore that really blew
- 20:34Speaker 1: up was I can't remember I watched the film with him.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I can't remember the name of it, but it's the
- 20:40Speaker 1: one where it's the women and they're wilding on and
- 20:44Speaker 1: this is a whole wild out story. But as soon
- 20:47Speaker 1: as it ended, I went to the site made a
- 20:49Speaker 1: post like bringing Colman Domingo to the NCU by any
- 20:53Speaker 1: means necessary, right, And you know, thank you very much
- 20:57Speaker 1: for doing that, because I've long thought he was real
- 21:00Speaker 1: and this is such a perfect role for him. And
- 21:02Speaker 1: I really appreciate the way y'all did Norman because to me,
- 21:07Speaker 1: he's like the classic villain, like what a villain should be.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Because he truly believes he's right, and he truly believes
- 21:14Speaker 1: that he's doing things for the right reason. And that's
- 21:18Speaker 1: just so great to see on screen. And I think
- 21:20Speaker 1: Colman embodies that so well, So thank you for that.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I also just wanted to talk about Harry really quick,
- 21:28Speaker 1: especially when he had the scene where because that I
- 21:32Speaker 1: was I was seeing it as the show was going on.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, they're doing a you know, different
- 21:36Speaker 1: take on Harry. But when he came to Peter and
- 21:39Speaker 1: said go get him Tiger, that's when I was like, Wow, Okay,
- 21:41Speaker 1: Jeff is out here. You know, he's gonna take the
- 21:45Speaker 1: old thing and flip it on you. So like, what
- 21:47Speaker 1: was like the ideas behind going that with that and
- 21:51Speaker 1: you know, letting Harry use that classic line with Peter.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Are one of our writers, Charlie Nooner or one of
- 21:58Speaker 3: our story editors, he actually wrote that episode. So the
- 22:03Speaker 3: first time I read that line where he gave go
- 22:06Speaker 3: yet I'm tired to Harry, I was like, well, this
- 22:10Speaker 3: is MJ's line, but it's it's perfect here. It fits
- 22:16Speaker 3: so well, And there was like an internal struggle in
- 22:20Speaker 3: me as a fan. It's like, well, I don't know
- 22:22Speaker 3: if we should give this to but also it's so good,
- 22:26Speaker 3: so like you know, we went back and forth and
- 22:28Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, it's this show is
- 22:32Speaker 3: like everything you know, but different, you know. So I
- 22:36Speaker 3: love being able to lean into that and the fact
- 22:38Speaker 3: that Ari saysn't here. I think it's just such a
- 22:42Speaker 3: it's a it's a poignant moment, and it's such a
- 22:44Speaker 3: nice capper to that moment of like now he's Spider Man.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Now it's complete. Even without like MJ there, you still
- 22:53Speaker 3: feel like this is such a big moment. So I
- 22:57Speaker 3: agreed with him, and I was like, let's lean into
- 22:58Speaker 3: it in terms of like just who Harry is. Harry's
- 23:02Speaker 3: a really difficult character because you think of Peter and
- 23:07Speaker 3: you think his best friend Harry Osborne, even though like
- 23:10Speaker 3: in so many comics they hate each other, like they
- 23:15Speaker 3: just kind of like don't get along. And I think
- 23:19Speaker 3: there's always kind of like a natural proclivity of like, okay, well,
- 23:23Speaker 3: like Peter's the surrogate son, and Norman loves Peter, but
- 23:26Speaker 3: he hates his own son, Harry. So Harry is jealous,
- 23:29Speaker 3: and like that's not a thing I wanted to do,
- 23:33Speaker 3: especially like not from the offset. I don't want to
- 23:35Speaker 3: like introduce these two characters and like Harry's jealous of
- 23:38Speaker 3: this guy who just popped up. But what I do
- 23:41Speaker 3: like is giving them each something that they like about
- 23:45Speaker 3: the other one. And for me, it's like Harry is
- 23:49Speaker 3: mister popular, He's like suave, He's like everything that Peter
- 23:54Speaker 3: kind of wishes he could be. And that's aspirational for Peter.
- 23:58Speaker 3: And Harry is looking at Peter's like he's this guy
- 24:02Speaker 3: people like him, He's got all these friends, he's got
- 24:04Speaker 3: these powers as well, but also just like he's just
- 24:07Speaker 3: a really smart, likable guy. So I want to I
- 24:11Speaker 3: want to be like Peter, and I like that they
- 24:13Speaker 3: both have something to take away from one another. And
- 24:15Speaker 3: it's not them at odds, but it's just them with
- 24:18Speaker 3: like a natural appreciation for one another that I think
- 24:21Speaker 3: makes a really natural friendship. And as their world's kind
- 24:24Speaker 3: of cross, it is more Harry trying to ingratiate himself
- 24:29Speaker 3: into Peter's world more so than like Peter trying to
- 24:32Speaker 3: be like, hey, you know, like my posts so people.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Follow right right, right, right right, And I think.
- 24:37Speaker 3: That's there's something nice about that about treating Harry as
- 24:40Speaker 3: like this guy who is very much put on a
- 24:43Speaker 3: pedestal because of who he is, but very lonely at
- 24:47Speaker 3: the top of that pedestal and you know, willing to
- 24:50Speaker 3: kind of step down from it to be a normal
- 24:54Speaker 3: team around these kids who are his own age.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and I love that, you know, this is century
- 25:00Speaker 2: on you know, the typical child version of Peter and
- 25:04Speaker 2: and and how that is growing up as a child. Like,
- 25:07Speaker 2: I think that's one of the I mean, even though
- 25:08Speaker 2: we've seen in live action and otherwise we've seen Spider
- 25:11Speaker 2: Man in various age ranges and things like that, I
- 25:14Speaker 2: think like really critical to the learning story and the
- 25:19Speaker 2: attention and attraction to the characters. Really like seeing them
- 25:24Speaker 2: go through this as a kid. And I think you know,
- 25:27Speaker 2: the idea of you know, him being in school and
- 25:29Speaker 2: then having the typical school issues you know, oh, girls
- 25:33Speaker 2: and dating and or guys and dating and this and that.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Like I think that's really critical, especially when you have
- 25:40Speaker 2: so many shows that don't like allow that type of story,
- 25:44Speaker 2: Like they want to age kids up so fast, so
- 25:46Speaker 2: they don't allow them to discover like the you know,
- 25:50Speaker 2: the daily hardships of being a kid, right, and you know,
- 25:54Speaker 2: and perhaps that was just the idea going into it,
- 25:56Speaker 2: like like oh, this is going to be the young,
- 25:57Speaker 2: young version of of Peter and Friends. But like, was
- 26:01Speaker 2: there ever a point where you're like, oh, we might
- 26:03Speaker 2: he might be old or anything like that.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Old?
- 26:04Speaker 2: Was it always just you know what, we want to
- 26:06Speaker 2: do this because this is a critical story.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it was always this because I think there's just
- 26:13Speaker 3: to your point, there's so much to mine there that
- 26:16Speaker 3: it's kind of gone on mind. And you know, I
- 26:19Speaker 3: think everyone's like, oh, well, he's in high school, so
- 26:21Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to like watch him study for his
- 26:24Speaker 3: big exam, and like I don't want anyone to like, yeah,
- 26:27Speaker 3: you know, like that's the thing. Uh, you guys are
- 26:30Speaker 3: like Craig of the Creek. We made a point of
- 26:33Speaker 3: like never showing Crag in school because like that's a
- 26:37Speaker 3: part of his world. That's not the part where you
- 26:38Speaker 3: want to see. And like for this, like Peter's hub
- 26:43Speaker 3: is the school because all his friends are there, but
- 26:45Speaker 3: like that slowly evolves and the school is always going
- 26:48Speaker 3: to be like an aspect of the show for season
- 26:51Speaker 3: one and you know, so on. But you know, it's
- 26:55Speaker 3: finding a way to like not make it feel like, oh, well,
- 26:58Speaker 3: we got to check in over here. But more so,
- 27:01Speaker 3: this is an aspect of his life and you know
- 27:04Speaker 3: that comes along with like saving the city and being
- 27:07Speaker 3: there for May and being there for friends. So yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 3: we always wanted to like lean into him as a
- 27:13Speaker 3: teen because I think there's just so much there and
- 27:16Speaker 3: also just like it's a fun area. You know, we
- 27:20Speaker 3: can we can grow with this character. I don't I
- 27:23Speaker 3: don't want to like start with him as like, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 3: a twenty year old because it kind of I don't
- 27:29Speaker 3: want to say Lumps is in with a lot of
- 27:30Speaker 3: other stuff. But like you know, we're coming out concurrently
- 27:34Speaker 3: to the movies Tom Holland Spider Man is in college now,
- 27:39Speaker 3: so then we kind of be trading the same ground
- 27:41Speaker 3: for just like now we can kind of like see
- 27:43Speaker 3: where they went in certain things, and now we have
- 27:46Speaker 3: the room to kind of like do our own version
- 27:48Speaker 3: of that.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I see, I see, yeah, And it's like, such like
- 27:52Speaker 1: you said, it's such a great growth period, and I
- 27:55Speaker 1: think that's really great how you woven in all the
- 27:58Speaker 1: different social issues of like modern day high school. But
- 28:02Speaker 1: it's just in a very straightforward way, kind of the
- 28:05Speaker 1: same way that stan Lee and etc. Down the line
- 28:08Speaker 1: would have done it where they just tell you your story
- 28:10Speaker 1: and then it just happens. Like I love how Nico's
- 28:13Speaker 1: sexuality is just you know, right there, but it's not
- 28:17Speaker 1: a big deal. You know, it's just who she is, and.
- 28:22Speaker 4: You know, it's not a very special episode of right right, you.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Know, and Nico being one of my favorite characters of
- 28:29Speaker 1: all time, man, like just I mean of all time.
- 28:33Speaker 1: I would just love to see how great she was done,
- 28:36Speaker 1: how well she's represented on this show, how all the
- 28:38Speaker 1: characters are and then you've already said about it. But
- 28:42Speaker 1: it's like we got one note that we definitely heard
- 28:44Speaker 1: was people were like, oh, Pearl has just been reduced
- 28:47Speaker 1: to you know, Peter, and I wanted to say tombstone.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You know, sorry man, No, I mean look like you
- 28:57Speaker 1: said you wanted to get away from the school. The
- 28:59Speaker 1: man through the jacket in the trash man is dating away.
- 29:04Speaker 3: From the school.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I got something to say about that too.
- 29:12Speaker 1: And that's like, but with both, with all of those
- 29:14Speaker 1: POC characters, how do you deal with like, you know,
- 29:18Speaker 1: people want to see more from them immediately.
- 29:21Speaker 2: I mean this this is the first and to just
- 29:23Speaker 2: be to provide additional defense. This is for most or
- 29:27Speaker 2: maybe quite literally, the first time these characters have been
- 29:31Speaker 2: put somewhere else in a different medium, or the first
- 29:33Speaker 2: time you've ever seen them. I had no idea who
- 29:35Speaker 2: the hell proa Agan or Pagan was before this, right,
- 29:38Speaker 2: I didn't. I knew very little about the runaways and
- 29:41Speaker 2: then me go and things like that, So like, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 2: people will be upset or.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Not or anco fanatic and the running and I'm like,
- 29:50Speaker 1: where's running exact? Where where Nico over here? Where the homies?
- 29:58Speaker 3: You know, like that's the You guys are like a
- 30:00Speaker 3: perfect example of that, because there is like a there's
- 30:02Speaker 3: people that are going to recognize them immediately and they're
- 30:05Speaker 3: just like, Okay, when's happening. But then there's also people
- 30:08Speaker 3: that are like, I don't know these characters, and I
- 30:11Speaker 3: want to give them again the same way I'm like
- 30:13Speaker 3: snowburning villains. I want to make sure that, like you
- 30:15Speaker 3: have time to care for these characters, and hopefully by
- 30:19Speaker 3: the time these changes come, if they come, you're excited
- 30:22Speaker 3: about them. So it's definitely it's it's difficult because there's
- 30:26Speaker 3: so much the juggle. It's also Peter's story, but in
- 30:30Speaker 3: a lot of ways. It's Lonnie story, it's Nico's story,
- 30:32Speaker 3: it's Harry story, it's pro story. And we're also like
- 30:36Speaker 3: building a world with all these characters. That is like
- 30:40Speaker 3: difficult because it's like, Okay, I know the backdrop of
- 30:44Speaker 3: this world now I've seen I know civil war is happening,
- 30:47Speaker 3: I know there's certain things going on, but also, you know,
- 30:51Speaker 3: I don't know anything about Nico in this world per se,
- 30:56Speaker 3: you know, until we kind of like peel back, you know,
- 30:59Speaker 3: pill back the layers. So you know, it's a waiting
- 31:02Speaker 3: game in a lot of ways. It's a lot of
- 31:04Speaker 3: like building, it's storytelling that I hope people will be
- 31:08Speaker 3: very happy to and get to those conclusions. But I
- 31:12Speaker 3: would say, if you're a fan of these characters, know that,
- 31:16Speaker 3: like we want to do justice by them. I don't
- 31:20Speaker 3: take it lightly that like Pearl is, you know, the
- 31:25Speaker 3: first Filipino superhero, and I know she's in this show,
- 31:28Speaker 3: is like Lonnie's love interest in Peter's crush. But I
- 31:31Speaker 3: also know that like what that character means to people,
- 31:35Speaker 3: So I want to make sure that like we are
- 31:37Speaker 3: doing right for that character as well. But also you know,
- 31:41Speaker 3: like at the end of the day. We have a
- 31:44Speaker 3: very we have ten episodes to tell a complete story,
- 31:47Speaker 3: and sometimes certain things just kind of have to fall
- 31:50Speaker 3: to the wayside or get put on hold to a
- 31:52Speaker 3: later season. So I help people kind of give us
- 31:56Speaker 3: the grace to tell that story within the space that
- 32:00Speaker 3: we can. Because even in season one, there were things
- 32:02Speaker 3: that like we had to use that I would have
- 32:05Speaker 3: liked to keep and just wasn't able to. So you know,
- 32:08Speaker 3: it's like, Okay, can I find room for that in
- 32:10Speaker 3: season two? If can I find room for that in
- 32:12Speaker 3: season three? Is it too long too far gone by
- 32:15Speaker 3: then to even remember the thing that I'm paying off
- 32:18Speaker 3: from season three? You know. So it's it's a juggling act.
- 32:22Speaker 3: But right, you know, there's a lot of characters to
- 32:25Speaker 3: kind of surface in the show, and I want to
- 32:28Speaker 3: make sure that they all properly. Feel like, if you're
- 32:30Speaker 3: a fan, you have that moment where you're doing the
- 32:33Speaker 3: Leo meme of like pointing at the.
- 32:36Speaker 1: God yeah too many times? Yeah, And in the DNA.
- 32:43Speaker 2: This is this is less of a question, just more
- 32:45Speaker 2: of a comment, And I'm really glad you said that that.
- 32:48Speaker 2: I mean, obviously you are have self awareness and the
- 32:50Speaker 2: team at large and you guys are probably checking each
- 32:53Speaker 2: other too, and that's why the show was so balanced.
- 32:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 32:56Speaker 2: It made me think about like how I felt about
- 32:58Speaker 2: Lannie going into this like against someone who I didn't
- 33:01Speaker 2: have much of history or backstory about. And then as
- 33:04Speaker 2: he kept going on, I'm like, oh, he's so promising,
- 33:07Speaker 2: great gay kid.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And then I was telling it a whole I mean,
- 33:11Speaker 1: I wasn't telling about it, just.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Like he was like, well, like he kept telling like
- 33:14Speaker 2: he was keeping Ben was just like, well, I don't know,
- 33:16Speaker 2: you you know, he's kind of he goes through some things.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I'm like, what are you talking about? So then actually
- 33:21Speaker 2: go and read up on his backstory and I'm like,
- 33:23Speaker 2: this die is tragic a sound like? And then I
- 33:26Speaker 2: see it repeating in the show, and so I.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Started feeling a way.
- 33:30Speaker 2: I was just like, man, he's the star guy. You know,
- 33:33Speaker 2: he's doing something and I'm trying not to give everything away.
- 33:36Speaker 2: But then he starts going to the wrong side of
- 33:37Speaker 2: the tracks, and I'm just like why, you know, and
- 33:40Speaker 2: it felt so like heavy and obvious, just like you know, he's.
- 33:45Speaker 1: He's going on to the wrong side of the neighborhood.
- 33:47Speaker 2: And then you got the gunshots and the glass breaking,
- 33:49Speaker 2: and I was just like, damn, like, why why does
- 33:53Speaker 2: he have to go down this path? Why can't we
- 33:55Speaker 2: just be a star quarterback? However, to your point, maybe
- 33:59Speaker 2: wait and see, because this is a slow burn. I
- 34:01Speaker 2: will give you, guys, that satisfaction because you've already presented
- 34:06Speaker 2: and created such works that like I actually love and
- 34:09Speaker 2: I and I do love what I'm seeing for your
- 34:11Speaker 2: friendly neighborhood. And you know, I do trust you, guys.
- 34:14Speaker 2: So I appreciate that you're saying hold on, you know,
- 34:19Speaker 2: I appreciate that. But but this is this is the
- 34:21Speaker 2: this is the last question that I do have. It's
- 34:23Speaker 2: it's just that, you know, I remember a couple of
- 34:25Speaker 2: years back on that same site we don't use any more,
- 34:28Speaker 2: Rindes with a flitter, where you announced that you were
- 34:31Speaker 2: writing a Spider Man story, right, and obviously we were all.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Like, well, what's he doing? Was this is great? Right?
- 34:35Speaker 2: And then so I'm sure you had your own thoughts
- 34:39Speaker 2: and preceing notions and things like that, and fast forward
- 34:43Speaker 2: to now. Is there something that you didn't anticipate them
- 34:46Speaker 2: that you are like deeply aware of now or something
- 34:48Speaker 2: you didn't you learned that you didn't realize before.
- 34:52Speaker 3: That's a that's a tough question.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Did you see everything because you could be a sage
- 34:57Speaker 2: and just have seen the entire timeline where all in
- 34:59Speaker 2: life that.
- 35:00Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, Honestly, I think there's a lot of like
- 35:08Speaker 3: assumptions that you made about the show that has always
- 35:13Speaker 3: kind of like been a thing I never thought about
- 35:17Speaker 3: in the moment because I'm just like telling a story
- 35:19Speaker 3: I would want to tell. So I think when it's like, oh,
- 35:23Speaker 3: they're like trying to steal Miles's whole flow, and I'm like,
- 35:27Speaker 3: that wasn't my intention. I love Miles, I'm trying to
- 35:33Speaker 3: like Peter Miles, that's not at all or like, you know,
- 35:37Speaker 3: just kind of like I think there was always a
- 35:40Speaker 3: you know, once we knew we wanted to do something
- 35:42Speaker 3: with Lonnie too, there was always going to be like
- 35:44Speaker 3: a oh, you know, they're trying to make this character
- 35:48Speaker 3: into that character. They're trying to like there's a weird
- 35:51Speaker 3: subsection of people who always are like this character can
- 35:55Speaker 3: only be this period, and like so much of the
- 35:58Speaker 3: show is kind of like pushing against those norms, you know,
- 36:03Speaker 3: like the fact that you're like, oh, I don't I
- 36:06Speaker 3: know a lot about Lonnie beforehand, and like, honestly, there's
- 36:10Speaker 3: not a ton to know about Lonnie beforehand. He's kind
- 36:13Speaker 3: of like he serves one role in the comics and
- 36:16Speaker 3: he's kind of you know, in recent years there's been,
- 36:20Speaker 3: you know, chances to expand on that, or in the
- 36:22Speaker 3: Spider Man games they've expanded on that, but like really
- 36:26Speaker 3: diving into his backstory and like giving him this backstory
- 36:29Speaker 3: and like giving him so much heart, which is like
- 36:32Speaker 3: not a thing that was a big part of his character.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Has always been something that I wanted to do and
- 36:38Speaker 3: I always knew that, like with that with Norman, with like,
- 36:42Speaker 3: you know, changing these characters, there's always going to be
- 36:44Speaker 3: people that are like, oh, oh, Draws is now, don't
- 36:48Speaker 3: you know at the end of the day, this guy
- 36:49Speaker 3: is this, and I don't you know. As much as
- 36:53Speaker 3: there is kind of like a comic version of fate
- 36:57Speaker 3: where it's like, well, you're destined to get down this path,
- 37:00Speaker 3: I want to make sure that, like the same way
- 37:03Speaker 3: who you're looking at Norman like I don't know, you're
- 37:05Speaker 3: looking at Lannie like I don't know, come on, you're
- 37:07Speaker 3: better than this. You can make better choices than this,
- 37:10Speaker 3: and uh, you know, in time, we'll see if he
- 37:15Speaker 3: is kind of destined to go on that road or
- 37:17Speaker 3: if certain things that have happened and put in one another. So, yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 3: I don't know if I answered your questions. No, No,
- 37:24Speaker 3: that's okay.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Just I'm reading between the lines here and you can
- 37:27Speaker 2: correct me if I'm wrong. But I feel like, what's
- 37:29Speaker 2: one of the things people say is or people don't realize,
- 37:32Speaker 2: is you have a level of confidence that it's an
- 37:34Speaker 2: understated confidence, and I think because you believe in your abilities,
- 37:39Speaker 2: and that's something a lot of people don't she because
- 37:41Speaker 2: sometimes it gets misconstrued as just you know, you're not
- 37:43Speaker 2: being humble, but it's like, no, it's I am who
- 37:47Speaker 2: I am right, I was chosen for this, I have
- 37:49Speaker 2: his purpose here and I'm doing what I had always
- 37:52Speaker 2: been intended to do. And you are not saying that.
- 37:55Speaker 2: But from how you you didn't say those words exactly,
- 37:58Speaker 2: but from how you work, how you are even expressing
- 38:02Speaker 2: how this whole project has come about, how you've been
- 38:04Speaker 2: working through it, it's clear to me, and I think
- 38:06Speaker 2: that's a really important lesson for people to clean like
- 38:10Speaker 2: graphs and lean into just the fact that you.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Know, sometimes you are the guy right like, it's.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Okay, right, and you should you should celebrate that. A
- 38:19Speaker 2: lot of times, you know, we talk about stuff like impost,
- 38:21Speaker 2: but I think that's also the opposite side of things
- 38:23Speaker 2: that we need to shine a light on more and
- 38:26Speaker 2: and again. It's it comes up to these beautiful works
- 38:30Speaker 2: like this. So you know you didn't say it, but
- 38:32Speaker 2: this is what you're saying.
- 38:33Speaker 3: So thank you, Thank you for reading that.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Ye also to bring you back down to earth real quick,
- 38:43Speaker 1: not because now I'm sure you do go through the
- 38:47Speaker 1: moments of imposter syndrome and all that, but the fact
- 38:49Speaker 1: that you've conquered them and continue to move on is
- 38:52Speaker 1: the real lesson that people should get from them. And
- 38:55Speaker 1: the other side of it is you're also one of
- 38:58Speaker 1: those people who gate keeps your your own show because
- 39:01Speaker 1: you didn't even want Harry to change and you.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Like you.
- 39:12Speaker 3: But then I opened the gate. I said, let me
- 39:15Speaker 3: crash this game, you can say, But first you were like,
- 39:19Speaker 3: hold on, I don't know, I don't love about this
- 39:22Speaker 3: one cheap.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Ye're gone too far? All right, Well, you have survived
- 39:30Speaker 1: our interview segment. But before you get out of here,
- 39:33Speaker 1: we do have our rap segment our rapid fire questions. So, Jeff,
- 39:37Speaker 1: are you ready? I think we'll all right there we go,
- 39:42Speaker 1: all right. Oh, this is a good one. If you
- 39:44Speaker 1: had no choice but to run for office with a
- 39:47Speaker 1: comic book villain, who would you choose? And why?
- 39:50Speaker 4: Uh lie Man flies Hill.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Take away?
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's a problem snake on salesman.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I mean, we see it went.
- 40:10Speaker 3: But I'm there to like balance him out, you see.
- 40:13Speaker 3: So like Wes, he's a smooth talker, I'm like the
- 40:16Speaker 3: honest I'm the honest guy.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Like Norma says something like, oh, everyone gets these you know, benefits.
- 40:22Speaker 2: He goes, No, actually, you're gonna die. I can see that.
- 40:26Speaker 1: That's y'all too. That's y'all too. Maybe canna get next question?
- 40:31Speaker 2: And you should be well aware of this because you
- 40:33Speaker 2: used to wrestle. If you could have a theme song
- 40:36Speaker 2: play when you walk into a room, what would it be?
- 40:40Speaker 3: Oh? Oh my god, that's such a there's an answer
- 40:44Speaker 3: that I want to say, and I feel like it's
- 40:46Speaker 3: the most obvious answer in the world. But I want
- 40:48Speaker 3: to say. I want to say not like us. I
- 40:50Speaker 3: feel like.
- 40:52Speaker 1: That's a good one, good one.
- 40:54Speaker 3: That's gonna pump up any crowd, you know, I mean.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Declarative. Okay, who is your favorite lesser known Spider Man villain?
- 41:09Speaker 3: You know, it's tough because there's like if you would
- 41:11Speaker 3: have asked me this maybe three years ago, I was
- 41:13Speaker 3: in Spot.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Fam you've read my mind?
- 41:16Speaker 3: Why? Literally?
- 41:18Speaker 1: I had that on the page.
- 41:19Speaker 3: You know. What's funny is very very very early on,
- 41:22Speaker 3: when you're figuring out the show, and like one of
- 41:24Speaker 3: the first incarnations, I was like, oh, we should use
- 41:27Speaker 3: Spot as the villain. And then like two years later,
- 41:32Speaker 3: frigging Spider Verse Hilt. I was like, oh, I'm glad
- 41:34Speaker 3: we didn't Spot.
- 41:37Speaker 1: He was like, that's one of the first Spider Man
- 41:39Speaker 1: comics I got. Or I didn't even have it. My
- 41:42Speaker 1: best friend had it and I would read it at
- 41:43Speaker 1: his house and I was like, Yo, this dude is
- 41:45Speaker 1: so ill but so whack at the same time. Yeah.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Absolutely, Okay, this may be harder easy, depending what you prefer.
- 41:56Speaker 2: But would you rather see your life turned to an album,
- 42:01Speaker 2: a graphic novel, a video game, or a movie? So
- 42:05Speaker 2: did they did the story of the story of Jeff
- 42:07Speaker 2: m How would you like that?
- 42:10Speaker 3: Damn? That's hard. Why are you why I came on
- 42:13Speaker 3: to your show and horb. I'm want to say, a
- 42:20Speaker 3: graphic novel. I think that'd be a fun. Yeah, and
- 42:24Speaker 3: then we can adapt it to all those other mediums.
- 42:26Speaker 3: I'm cheating smart, You're smart.
- 42:29Speaker 1: That's what the money is. That's just good, good job.
- 42:33Speaker 1: All right, Let's give him an easier one than a
- 42:34Speaker 1: Superman or Batman.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Batman. I've read in Batman, so I'm gonna say Batman,
- 42:40Speaker 3: there you go biased. And I love the Red Hood,
- 42:42Speaker 3: so that's also nice.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Star Wars or Star Trek.
- 42:49Speaker 3: You about to get me so hated?
- 42:51Speaker 1: Uh?
- 42:53Speaker 3: I don't watch either?
- 42:55Speaker 1: Answer we got your first.
- 43:00Speaker 2: That was the first where some I don't care about it.
- 43:02Speaker 3: I like either, but man said you don't.
- 43:06Speaker 2: You said you don't watch either. Is it because you
- 43:08Speaker 2: don't like it or you just not into it?
- 43:10Speaker 3: Was not interested? Star lower No?
- 43:19Speaker 1: All right, Oh wow, hopefully you got one for this.
- 43:23Speaker 1: What's your favorite superhero movie of all time?
- 43:27Speaker 3: Uh?
- 43:28Speaker 1: Like, I'll watch them either.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Uh the Nineties Fantastic No, Roger Corman. Pleas you know.
- 43:42Speaker 3: There's two answers, and I keep going back and forth
- 43:44Speaker 3: between them. I'm gonna say, boh, Black Panther and uh
- 43:49Speaker 3: into the Spider Verse. I saw both a lot lately. Yeah, theater.
- 43:53Speaker 3: I saw Black Panther nine times in the theater and
- 43:56Speaker 3: I saw Spider Verse seven. So those are two of
- 44:00Speaker 3: my favorite show.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Absolutely worthy to see, you know, multiples of five, Like,
- 44:06Speaker 2: come on, absolutely all right, this may be the last
- 44:09Speaker 2: one here. If you could have any one superpower, what
- 44:13Speaker 2: would it be?
- 44:15Speaker 3: Teleportation? Why? Because I don't like driving? I'm lazy do
- 44:25Speaker 3: I live in l A And I've had meetings that
- 44:27Speaker 3: are far and I'm like, I might just pop over there,
- 44:30Speaker 3: and you know, I want to drive to Santa Monica. Uh.
- 44:38Speaker 3: I hate this answer.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Changes if you like, you.
- 44:43Speaker 3: Know, because I mean there's a part of me that's like, well,
- 44:50Speaker 3: you know, how do you not go like super Strike
- 44:53Speaker 3: just because you know?
- 44:54Speaker 1: But I think what you do with it, I think
- 44:57Speaker 1: better than Superstring.
- 44:59Speaker 3: That's a good point. But I could, like, you know,
- 45:01Speaker 3: so people I like, professionally, I can just professionally.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I can do the slap competition.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Yeah, just ragged all across into the next.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I just want super speed so I can win three
- 45:17Speaker 1: NBA titles.
- 45:18Speaker 4: And then I like, you can't do that.
- 45:22Speaker 1: I can't, you can't. I'm going I'm going just fast
- 45:26Speaker 1: enough every morning.
- 45:28Speaker 2: He said that for and I'm like, so you're dash
- 45:30Speaker 2: from the Incredibles.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Like, no, not that fast, I'm not. He holds back
- 45:36Speaker 1: just yeah, I'm holding back three chips. I'm out, you
- 45:40Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 45:41Speaker 3: See, this is why we don't have powers. I can't
- 45:45Speaker 3: get Yeah.
- 45:46Speaker 1: Yeah, man, okay, okay, we said us laughing.
- 45:50Speaker 3: I got.
- 45:50Speaker 1: I gotta hear your answer to these last two real quick?
- 45:54Speaker 1: Who is your first geek crush?
- 45:57Speaker 3: How dare you? I'm gonna preface this by saying I
- 46:07Speaker 3: was born in nineteen ninety, so I would have been like,
- 46:10Speaker 3: you know, a child uh nineties animated shee holk.
- 46:20Speaker 1: I mean there's nothing wrong with that?
- 46:22Speaker 2: Is that's an easy answer?
- 46:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 46:27Speaker 1: I mean you should have just done straight out with it.
- 46:29Speaker 1: You know, people would understand.
- 46:31Speaker 3: I mean, I work with I don't want to see
- 46:35Speaker 3: you around the office, and I'm like, oh.
- 46:36Speaker 1: God, that's funny, that's funny. I'm crying and you know, no,
- 46:46Speaker 1: I don't even want to end on a sad note
- 46:48Speaker 1: like that one.
- 46:49Speaker 3: So no, I'm so intrigued. Now all right, all right?
- 46:53Speaker 1: Well then death? Yeah, what care? In any medium? What
- 46:57Speaker 1: character's death hurts you the most?
- 46:59Speaker 3: Oh? God, that's a tough question. I'm trying to think
- 47:05Speaker 3: of any answer that's not like the first thing that
- 47:07Speaker 3: just popped into my head, but like an actual true answer. So, oh,
- 47:15Speaker 3: how dare you bring him up?
- 47:18Speaker 2: I know, you know, the bane of millennials everywhere he died?
- 47:24Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 47:26Speaker 3: I remember seeing that movie in the theaters when I
- 47:27Speaker 3: was five. I don't know how I didn't cry. Nothing's
- 47:31Speaker 3: coming to mind right now, and I know the second
- 47:33Speaker 3: I stopped thinking about it, it'll be like, oh, why
- 47:36Speaker 3: didn't I say this thing? I should have let you
- 47:38Speaker 3: in with the other question. Now it seems soulss And
- 47:42Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't know, I don't care.
- 47:45Speaker 1: None of em bothers me a problem. Start. I don't
- 47:50Speaker 1: feel so good.
- 47:51Speaker 3: I mean, honestly, that one was messed up. Yeah, let's
- 47:57Speaker 3: go with that for now until, like, I'll update with
- 48:00Speaker 3: a better answer.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I got you back after season two.
- 48:04Speaker 3: A little bit, and then I'll be like, oh, it's
- 48:06Speaker 3: this character.
- 48:07Speaker 2: A little popping on another episode. Just we just stopped
- 48:09Speaker 2: the other episode. Here come Jeff.
- 48:13Speaker 3: Ye, and I'll just like this and then I pulled through.
- 48:22Speaker 2: But thank you so much, Jeff, you survived the rap
- 48:24Speaker 2: segrament you survived the Four Owners Interview. We appreciate, love
- 48:28Speaker 2: the work you're doing, love what you're putting into this world.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Are it's needed, and we want to make sure you are.
- 48:34Speaker 2: You are knowing of that before you go. Can you
- 48:36Speaker 2: please let people know where they can find you, where
- 48:39Speaker 2: they can't find you. You don't want nobody to find you.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 48:42Speaker 2: And any projects you're working on, you know you can
- 48:45Speaker 2: talk more about Spider not Spider Verse, but your Friend
- 48:48Speaker 2: the Neighborhood Spider Man and anything you want to.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Plug I would like to plug. Uh, show called Your
- 48:54Speaker 3: Friend the Neighbord Spider Man on Disney Plus. Also show
- 48:58Speaker 3: called Craig Creak on Max or somewhere.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Sure, I don't know what they're Yeah, I mean find
- 49:07Speaker 3: it and get it where they take it off, like
- 49:09Speaker 3: every other thing on that app Also, uh, yeah, I
- 49:14Speaker 3: would say those two things. Looking forward to you guys
- 49:18Speaker 3: seeing season two a cferently Neighborhood Spider Man when that's ready.
- 49:23Speaker 3: We're working on it now, so you know it won't

- 49:49Speaker 3: Mary Jane's not in the show, Guys, I don't. My
- 49:54Speaker 3: hands are tied. I can only do so.
