- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We've been learning adjectives like big, small, hot, cold. Lucas: Today we have two more: cantik and hodoh. Cantik means beautiful. Hodoh means ugly. Luna: Oh, I like cantik. That sounds nice. Can you say it again? Lucas: Cantik. Cantik. Luna: Cantik. Cantik. Lucas: Good. Now hodoh. Hodoh. Luna: Hodoh. That one sounds a bit harsh. Hodoh. Lucas: It does, but it's useful. Let's build a sentence: Bunga itu cantik. The flower is beautiful. Luna: Bunga itu cantik. So bunga is flower, cantik is beautiful. Lucas: Exactly. Now you try. Bunga itu cantik. Luna: Bunga itu cantik. Lucas: Perfect. Now a negative one: Baju ini hodoh. This shirt is ugly. Luna: Baju ini hodoh. Baju is shirt, ini is this. So this shirt is ugly. Lucas: Right. Say it with me: Baju ini hodoh. Luna: Baju ini hodoh. Lucas: Great. Now let's use cantik for a person: Dia cantik. She is beautiful. Luna: Dia cantik. Dia means he or she, right? Lucas: Yes. So Dia cantik. Try it. Luna: Dia cantik. Lucas: Awesome. Now let's practice all three. I'll say the English, you say the Malay. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: The flower is beautiful. Luna: Bunga itu cantik. Lucas: This shirt is ugly. Luna: Baju ini hodoh. Lucas: She is beautiful. Luna: Dia cantik. Lucas: You nailed it. Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you see a beautiful flower at the market. Luna: Oh, Bunga itu cantik! I'd say that. Lucas: And if you see an ugly shirt? Luna: Baju ini hodoh. But I'd probably whisper it. Lucas: Wise.
