Speaker 3: came yesterday from West Virginia International Jaeger Airport. We actually
• 1:43
Speaker 3: two consecutive weeks of big announcements from the airport, so
• 1:46
Speaker 3: we're going to get right into that. Knawk County Commissioned

• 2:01
Speaker 3: Both for being here. Kat Skeldon has the full story
• 2:05
Speaker 3: about the yesterday's announcement at wv Metronews dot com. But
• 2:08
Speaker 3: page for those who may have missed it. What was
• 2:11
Speaker 3: the big announcement yesterday.
• 2:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, so we had some of our state officials join
• 2:16
Speaker 5: us yesterday to announce that Breeze Airways is going to
• 2:21
Speaker 5: add up to five new routes over the next two years,
• 2:24
Speaker 5: starting with Tampa on October third.
• 2:27
Speaker 3: And I want to talk about this partnership with Well,
• 2:31
Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm making noise here. I'm trying to do
• 2:35
Speaker 3: ten thousand different things at once here because we had
• 2:37
Speaker 3: a computer malfunction before we went on the air, and
• 2:40
Speaker 3: as I'm trying to post my video, my video just
• 2:42
Speaker 3: started playing. So I apologize for that. So talk about
• 2:45
Speaker 3: this partnership with Breeze.
• 2:48
Speaker 5: Yes, So, we are lucky to be able to partner
• 2:51
Speaker 5: with the State of West Virginia, the Canawan County Commission,
• 2:54
Speaker 5: the City of Charleston, and the Charleston Area Alliance to
• 2:57
Speaker 5: bring these new routes to our community.
• 3:00
Speaker 6: And Commissioner Selango your take on all this, you know,
• 3:03
Speaker 6: and I said this question in my remarks. To have
• 3:05
Speaker 6: a vibrant economy, you have to have a vibrant airport.
• 3:08
Speaker 6: And they have done so much over the last few
• 3:10
Speaker 6: years to really not just with the enhancements, like the
• 3:15
Speaker 6: infrastructure enhancement, but also the service. We've got a lot
• 3:19
Speaker 6: going on, the issues with getting bags to the baggage
• 3:22
Speaker 6: claim on time. They have corrected that, you know, in
• 3:26
Speaker 6: addition to meeting with the airlines, they've been doing a lot,
• 3:28
Speaker 6: and so yesterday's announcement is just you know, adding on
• 3:31
Speaker 6: to what is one of the biggest economic generators in
• 3:35
Speaker 6: Kanaw County, perhaps in the southern part of the state,
• 3:38
Speaker 6: which is the airport. It brings in two hundred and
• 3:41
Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars a year in economic impact, and
• 3:44
Speaker 6: so the more you add, the more economic impact there's
• 3:47
Speaker 6: going to be. So you can look at it from
• 3:49
Speaker 6: a financial point of view, but also just for you know,
• 3:52
Speaker 6: the people in Kanaw County and the surrounding counties who
• 3:56
Speaker 6: use that airport very frequently. It opens up the world.
• 3:59
Speaker 6: I mean, you can now go to Las Vegas. Uh,
• 4:02
Speaker 6: there's going to be either a flight to Dallas or Houston.
• 4:05
Speaker 6: Of course I am rooting for Dallas.
• 4:07
Speaker 3: As am I as my two.
• 4:09
Speaker 6: Cowboys fans in one studio. That's uh, that's rare. Uh.
• 4:13
Speaker 6: And then we're looking at some other cities as well.
• 4:15
Speaker 6: So potentially one out West, and then a couple more
• 4:18
Speaker 6: on the East coast. So I you know, the more
• 4:21
Speaker 6: flights we get, the more routes we get, the better
• 4:23
Speaker 6: off we're going to be.
• 4:24
Speaker 3: What's our time frame again here?
• 4:25
  Speaker 2: Page?
• 4:26
Speaker 3: Uh? And if you if you said that earlier, I
• 4:28
Speaker 3: apologize again. We're having some technical issues here, But what
• 4:31
Speaker 3: is our time frame when we can expect these things?
• 4:34
Speaker 5: So the Tampa flight, those tickets are already on found now,
• 4:38
Speaker 5: so that will be in October third, and then as
• 4:41
Speaker 5: we hear more about the additional routes, we'll well, of
• 4:44
Speaker 5: course let our community know so they can book tickets
• 4:47
Speaker 5: for those as well.
• 4:47
Speaker 3: What's the response, Ben, I mean, I know we had,
• 4:50
Speaker 3: as we said, we had the Canaw County Commission there yesterday,
• 4:52
Speaker 3: the Governor was there, the Charleston Mary Alliance, all these
• 4:55
Speaker 3: different groups and representatives. But from the general public, now,
• 4:58
Speaker 3: with this new news has gotten out there via our
• 5:01
Speaker 3: station and other media sources, what's what's the general feel? Page?
• 5:05
Speaker 5: We've had a really amazing response from our community. I
• 5:09
Speaker 5: had several people texting me yesterday that we're very excited
• 5:13
Speaker 5: about the Vegas flights, and I'm also ready to take
• 5:16
Speaker 5: a trip to Vegas.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: There you go. And so when I mean you had
• 5:22
Speaker 3: two straight weeks with big announcements from Yeager, so I'm
• 5:26
Speaker 3: assuming there's gonna be another one coming soon.
• 5:28
Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, We're not done yet, We're just getting started,
• 5:31
  Speaker 5: so stay tuned.
• 5:32
Speaker 3: All right, Hey, Page, we'll let you go. I appreciate
• 5:34
Speaker 3: you being here. Thanks a lot.
• 5:36
  Speaker 5: Thank you.
• 5:37
Speaker 3: Page with Row again, spokesperson for West Virginia International Yeager
• 5:40
Speaker 3: Airport Adeve Island Show in five Any Live brought to
• 5:42
Speaker 3: you in part by Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing
• 5:45
Speaker 3: comprehensive management plans to outline strategies for controlling and minimizing
• 5:48
Speaker 3: as best as exposure. Perfect for commercial property owners and managers.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: Visit Pinnacle Court dot net because what you don't know
• 5:54
Speaker 3: can hurt you. Commissioner. Let's go back to you this.
• 5:58
Speaker 3: You know, this announcement comes yesterday. We had another bignnouncement
• 6:00
Speaker 3: last week. But I think it's interesting what you said
• 6:04
Speaker 3: about opening up West Virginia to the world.
• 6:07
Speaker 6: It really does, because you know, the more and not
• 6:09
Speaker 6: just for our citizens to go there, but now you know,
• 6:12
Speaker 6: if you get a flight into Orlando or Tampa or
• 6:14
Speaker 6: at Newark, we're starting to target them, those people to
• 6:18
Speaker 6: come here. I want those for instance. You know this
• 6:21
Speaker 6: is selfish, but I want them to come to the
• 6:23
Speaker 6: Shawne Sports Complex. When we're having tournaments. We will target
• 6:26
Speaker 6: clubs in those areas. It's a direct flight. You come in,
• 6:30
Speaker 6: you play for a weekend, and then you fly home.
• 6:33
Speaker 6: And so the you know, the more that we have
• 6:34
Speaker 6: of that, the more the economy is going to grow.
• 6:37
Speaker 6: And thankfully, you know, Governor Morsey is doing a good job.
• 6:40
Speaker 6: He's making sure that his administration is focused on infrastructure
• 6:44
Speaker 6: we've got. You know, he's working on the bridges, he's
• 6:47
Speaker 6: working on the roads, and he's working on our airport.
• 6:49
Speaker 6: You know, there's a lot going on and he gets it,
• 6:52
Speaker 6: and so we're very thankful. You know, a lot of
• 6:55
Speaker 6: times when you show up at a ribbon cutting and
• 6:57
Speaker 6: you give your speech and you're talking about how all
• 6:59
Speaker 6: this whitna been made, you know, this was impossible but
• 7:01
Speaker 6: for and then you point the truth is this would
• 7:05
Speaker 6: not have been possible but for the state. They came
• 7:07
Speaker 6: in and they've done a great job, you know, made
• 7:11
Speaker 6: this contract happen. Working well with Breeze, Breeze's customer's service
• 7:16
Speaker 6: satisfaction is off the charts high. I think they said
• 7:20
Speaker 6: they've only canceled a couple of flights over the last
• 7:23
Speaker 6: few years and those were weather related. And so the
• 7:26
Speaker 6: you know, the more that that we get, the better
• 7:28
Speaker 6: off we're going to be. And so the more announcements
• 7:31
Speaker 6: we're getting out of Yeager Airport, it's really great for
• 7:34
Speaker 6: the entire state of West Virginia, and the governor is
• 7:37
Speaker 6: doing a great job. We've got two US senators, you know,
• 7:40
Speaker 6: Senator Justice and Senator Capitol who understand and get it.
• 7:43
Speaker 6: You know, they understand what that airport means to the economy,
• 7:47
Speaker 6: not just knaw County, but for the entire state, and
• 7:49
Speaker 6: they have really been focused on that as well.
• 7:51
Speaker 3: Again, we're talking with the Connaugh County Commission President Ben Selango,
• 7:54
Speaker 3: and that I wasn't there yesterday obviously, but Kat Skelton's
• 7:58
Speaker 3: got a great story about it at wv metro news
• 8:00
Speaker 3: dot com. And just seeing you know, members of the
• 8:02
Speaker 3: Kanawu County Commission there, the governor there, as I mentioned
• 8:04
Speaker 3: with Paige, the airport officials, Charleston Ery Alliance Tourism Secretary
• 8:08
Speaker 3: Chelsea Ruby, everybody there, you know, because I think they
• 8:11
Speaker 3: all realize how big this is for Charleston and as
• 8:13
Speaker 3: you said, the Kanau Valley in all of West Virginia.
• 8:15
Speaker 6: Hey, listen, I wouldn't roast out on a tarmac in
• 8:18
Speaker 6: the middle of the day coming off here roasting at
• 8:20
  Speaker 6: the regatta.
• 8:20
  Speaker 3: That's exactly right.
• 8:21
Speaker 6: My skin is bright red thanks to four days of
• 8:24
Speaker 6: the regatta. But we've got yesterday. It was really hot,
• 8:28
Speaker 6: and I don't think we would have been out there
• 8:30
Speaker 6: if it was such a big announcement and so important,
• 8:32
Speaker 6: but uh, it was.
• 8:34
Speaker 3: It was very well.
• 8:34
Speaker 6: Attended, and you know that they did a great job.
• 8:37
Speaker 6: Dominique is doing a great job at the airport. Uh.
• 8:41
Speaker 6: Secretary Chelsea Ruby is incredible. I mean, the things she's
• 8:45
Speaker 6: doing with tourism and has been doing over the last
• 8:48
Speaker 6: you know, a few years, has been remarkable. You've really
• 8:51
Speaker 6: seen a boost in our in not just state but
• 8:53
Speaker 6: also in Kanawh County tourism because of Chelsea Ruby and
• 8:56
Speaker 6: and all her hard work.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: Well, and I think West Virginia is very lucky to
• 9:01
Speaker 3: have Chelsea Roupe, absolutely because I mean, relatively speaking, West
• 9:06
Speaker 3: Virginia is a small state. And as she and I
• 9:07
Speaker 3: talked last time, she's on here, she ain't from here.
• 9:10
Speaker 3: But she's adopted, adapted, I should say, not adopted, she's
• 9:14
Speaker 3: adapted very very well. And I think West Virginia is
• 9:16
Speaker 3: likeking to have her.
• 9:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, we really are. And I love it when I'm
• 9:18
Speaker 6: in other states and I see commercials, you know, for
• 9:22
Speaker 6: West Virginia tourism. You know, I was down south a
• 9:26
Speaker 6: few weeks ago and there was a West Virginia Tourism
• 9:28
Speaker 6: commercial on TV. I thought, well, that's great, you know,
• 9:30
Speaker 6: getting those commercials out there, getting people to come. And
• 9:34
Speaker 6: I think you've seen it. You definitely have seen it
• 9:36
Speaker 6: in the New ver Gorge Bridge. You know, the number
• 9:39
Speaker 6: of visitors they're getting now because that became a federal
• 9:46
Speaker 6: a federal park, you know, us park. I mean they're
• 9:49
Speaker 6: getting hundreds of thousands of visitors now because of that.
• 9:53
Speaker 6: And you know, promoting that is important, and that's what
• 9:55
Speaker 6: she does so well.
• 9:57
Speaker 3: Talking again with the Cannaw count Commission, President of ben
• 9:58
Speaker 3: Silanga A. Dave Allen, showing Eddie Live is brought to
• 10:00
Speaker 3: you in part by a Bridge Valley offering custom tailored trainings.
• 10:04
Speaker 3: Just apply a skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
• 10:06
Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley, not e du It's about the big
• 10:08
Speaker 3: things going on. I know there is a and I'm
• 10:11
Speaker 3: gonna talk a little bit more tomorrow with the Commissioner
• 10:13
Speaker 3: Lance Wheeler. He's scheduled to be on the show tomorrow.
• 10:15
Speaker 3: But uh, there is a park dedication I think going
• 10:19
Speaker 3: on later this week. Yea, wheel to talk about that
• 10:21
Speaker 3: a little bit tomorrow.
• 10:22
Speaker 6: We're gonna do that Saturday. This was Commissioner Wheeler's project.
• 10:26
Speaker 6: You know, he has spearheaded this. Uh, he has done
• 10:28
Speaker 6: a lot out in the Meadowood area and really brought
• 10:32
Speaker 6: a lot of attention and we put a lot of
• 10:34
Speaker 6: funding out into that area and you can you can
• 10:37
Speaker 6: see it. I mean, you've got the you've got the track,
• 10:39
Speaker 6: the half film core track out there, which honestly, we
• 10:41
Speaker 6: had been trying for decades to get half of them
• 10:45
Speaker 6: McCoy into Conwall County, and we finally did it into
• 10:47
  Speaker 6: into that track.
• 10:49
Speaker 3: That was his project.
• 10:50
Speaker 6: Uh, this Meadowood project is is his idea and he's
• 10:53
Speaker 6: been working hard. So I don't want to spoil the announcement. Yeah,
• 10:56
Speaker 6: so we'll let him do it.
• 10:57
Speaker 3: We'll let him do it tomorrow.
• 10:58
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 10:58
Speaker 6: It's it's really benefiting the peace people in that area
• 11:00
  Speaker 6: of the county.
• 11:01
Speaker 3: All Right, what else what's going on out Shanee these days?
• 11:03
Speaker 6: You know what we've got the big We got the
• 11:05
Speaker 6: ribbon cutting coming up August seventh. And so when we
• 11:09
Speaker 6: built the Shawnee Sports Complex, we opened it in twenty eighteen,
• 11:12
Speaker 6: we started building it in twenty seventeen. We underestimated how
• 11:16
Speaker 6: successful would be. I thought it would be a hit.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: I didn't realize how big it was going to be.
• 11:20
Speaker 6: You know, generated over one hundred and fifty million dollars
• 11:22
Speaker 6: of economic impact since we opened it in twenty eighteen.
• 11:26
Speaker 6: We host tournaments there all the time. If you drive
• 11:29
Speaker 6: on a random Sunday, you'll see that it's mostly community
• 11:32
Speaker 6: play and league play. But the parking lot is always full.
• 11:35
Speaker 6: And so we underestimated the size of the welcome center.
• 11:40
Speaker 6: We needed to have a bigger welcome center. We need
• 11:42
Speaker 6: to have a commercial kitchen, we need to have more restrooms.
• 11:44
Speaker 6: And so we're going to cut the ribbon on that
• 11:46
Speaker 6: project August the seventh. I believe we're going to do
• 11:48
Speaker 6: it at five pm, which is an unusual time, but
• 11:51
Speaker 6: that's what we picked.
• 11:53
  Speaker 5: Well.
• 11:53
Speaker 3: With the weather that we've had in the heat this summer,
• 11:55
Speaker 3: maybe to be a little cooler than maybe.
• 11:57
Speaker 6: Well, yeah, let's do it either five am or yeah,
• 12:00
  Speaker 6: there you go.
• 12:01
  Speaker 3: Now you're talking.
• 12:01
  Speaker 6: So we've got that coming up. That's a that's a
• 12:03
Speaker 6: four million dollar project. Again, that would not have been
• 12:06
Speaker 6: possible that a county wouldn't be able to put that
• 12:08
Speaker 6: project together on its own. You know, Senator Manson Center
• 12:12
Speaker 6: Capito came in with a substantial federal earmark, and then
• 12:15
Speaker 6: we had then Governor Jim Justice came in with about
• 12:20
Speaker 6: a million dollars to help out with that project. So
• 12:23
Speaker 6: it is a four to five million dollar four to
• 12:25
Speaker 6: five million dollar project, and we're cutting it on August seventh.
• 12:30
Speaker 6: That's going to expand the footprint of the Welcome Center.
• 12:33
Speaker 6: It's about four times larger than it was. Every time
• 12:37
Speaker 6: we had a tournament there, you would have long lines
• 12:39
Speaker 6: at the concessions, you had long lines at the restrooms,
• 12:42
Speaker 6: and so this will alleviate some of that, you know, hopefully.
• 12:47
Speaker 3: I mean we're at I guess not even the halfway
• 12:50
Speaker 3: point of summer yet. Been how has how the crowd's
• 12:54
Speaker 3: been out there for these different events.
• 12:56
Speaker 6: Well, you know, we had to close for a week
• 12:57
Speaker 6: because of the heat, and we're getting we're getting really
• 13:00
Speaker 6: good crowd, especially from the baseball softball side. You know,
• 13:03
Speaker 6: that's a that's primarily a summer, spring, summer, and fall sport,
• 13:07
Speaker 6: and so we've got a lot of people over there.
• 13:10
Speaker 6: We did have the heat issue. It was over one
• 13:12
Speaker 6: hundred degrees and you know the little rubber pellace that
• 13:15
Speaker 6: they put down down on the turf that helps with
• 13:17
Speaker 6: lower limb injuries, It helps with concussions, it helps with
• 13:21
Speaker 6: you know, prevent concussions, it helps with soft landing, and
• 13:24
Speaker 6: it keeps the turf standing up. But the problem is
• 13:26
Speaker 6: it heats up. Yeah, and so if it's one hundred
• 13:29
Speaker 6: degrees outside, it's probably one hundred and twenty to one
• 13:31
Speaker 6: hundred and twenty five on the on the turf, and
• 13:35
Speaker 6: so we had to close both sides. You can't put
• 13:38
Speaker 6: a fifty year old umpire back there with gear and
• 13:41
Speaker 6: expecting to be able to ump a game when it's
• 13:43
Speaker 6: one hundred and twenty five degrees on a.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: Lot to be fifty. I mean, I was just talking
• 13:47
Speaker 3: about my age. Oh okay, okay, okay, all right.
• 13:49
Speaker 6: And you know you also football players, you can't put
• 13:53

• 14:06

Speaker 3: So judicial Annex, mister Selango, what's the latest there?
• 17:16
Speaker 6: It is coming along. So the fifth floor is scheduled
• 17:19
Speaker 6: to be completed in mid September. I received some photographs
• 17:22
Speaker 6: of it yesterday. It's really coming along. Looks great. The
• 17:26
Speaker 6: first floor part of the remodel will be done probably
• 17:30
Speaker 6: by the end of next year, is what we're hoping.
• 17:33
Speaker 6: So you know, that was a project that came in.
• 17:35
Speaker 6: The initial bids were way over budget, like shockingly over budget.
• 17:39
Speaker 6: And I think I said on this show a time
• 17:40
Speaker 6: or two that was the project that kept me up
• 17:42
Speaker 6: at night because there were so many difficult parts of
• 17:46
Speaker 6: the project, not just for the project itself and the
• 17:50
Speaker 6: fact that you have limited space you have to add
• 17:52
Speaker 6: on but you have limited space because of the streets,
• 17:56
Speaker 6: but also because there's really no staging. You can't just
• 17:59
Speaker 6: shut down Virginia Street or Court Street and stage all
• 18:02
Speaker 6: the equipment that you need. And so it was a
• 18:05
Speaker 6: very complex project and you know, architects really did a
• 18:08
Speaker 6: great job. We put it out to bid. It came
• 18:10
Speaker 6: in way over but I mean six seven over budget,
• 18:14
Speaker 6: and we we we were watching the kind of the
• 18:18
Speaker 6: kind of the rates nationally. It hadn't really hit West
• 18:20
Speaker 6: Virginia yet. We were watching the rates and actually things
• 18:22
Speaker 6: were coming down after the COVID money had flooded the
• 18:26
Speaker 6: market and the contractors were able to you know, pick
• 18:28
Speaker 6: and choose which jobs they they did. They were able
• 18:31
Speaker 6: to increase the the construction hour or the per foot
• 18:36
Speaker 6: construction rate. You really saw that go way up, almost double.
• 18:41
Speaker 6: And so we're watching that kind of go down. We
• 18:43
Speaker 6: made a gamble, you know, the County Commission made a
• 18:45
Speaker 6: gamble to break up the project and put it out
• 18:48
Speaker 6: for rebid, and it paid off. You know, we save
• 18:50
Speaker 6: five and a half million dollars by doing it that
• 18:53
Speaker 6: way and didn't really delay the project that much. It
• 18:59
Speaker 6: delayed it probably five or six months. And so the
• 19:02
Speaker 6: good news is the project's going to say We're going
• 19:04
Speaker 6: to say five and a half million dollars and it's
• 19:06
Speaker 6: going to be completed by the end of next year
• 19:08
Speaker 6: on the first floor, and the fifth floor will be
• 19:10
Speaker 6: done in a couple months.
• 19:12
Speaker 3: We had a question here about the town Center. Okay,
• 19:14
Speaker 3: everybody's favorite subject, Charleston Town Centera. What's going on with
• 19:17
Speaker 3: the town Center? Says the Texture now that the big
• 19:20
Speaker 3: beautiful bill has passed, I don't know what it has anything.
• 19:24
  Speaker 3: I don't think that.
• 19:24
Speaker 6: I don't think that has anything to do with the
• 19:26
Speaker 6: town Center. You know, the town Center to me is
• 19:30
Speaker 6: it's an opportunity. I think you've got that many acres
• 19:34
Speaker 6: in downtown Charleston. Uh, it is a unique opportunity. You know,
• 19:39
Speaker 6: the Capital Sports Complex, which is currently on palls until
• 19:42
Speaker 6: we get some additional funding or the rates continue to drop.
• 19:47
Speaker 6: I mean, if we can, if we can somehow finagle
• 19:49
Speaker 6: that to where it is within our budget. Right now,
• 19:52
  Speaker 6: it's a it's a bit over our budget, and so
• 19:54
Speaker 6: if the rates still continue to come down, then we'll
• 19:56
Speaker 6: be able to do it. The project's not dead, it's
• 19:58
Speaker 6: just on hold. But I think I think the mall
• 20:02
Speaker 6: is an opportunity. It is something I know that that
• 20:05
Speaker 6: Mayor Goodwin is looking at very hard. I probably consumes
• 20:09
Speaker 6: a lot of her waking hours, you know, what to
• 20:12
Speaker 6: do with it, and she's got some great ideas. I
• 20:15
Speaker 6: think you'll see some movement on that fairly soon.
• 20:17
Speaker 3: But you can't really do anything, and you know, because
• 20:19
Speaker 3: it's private property, you know, And that's one of the
• 20:22
Speaker 3: things I think that's really unfortunate because people, and look,
• 20:25
Speaker 3: we all remember what the town center was in the
• 20:27
Speaker 3: nineteen eighties, when it opened, into the nineties, into the
• 20:29
Speaker 3: two thousands for that matter, up until about like ten
• 20:32
Speaker 3: years ago, we remember what the town center was. And
• 20:35
Speaker 3: invariably I was actually talking to some people last night
• 20:37
Speaker 3: from another from another county, and the lady I was
• 20:41
Speaker 3: talking to she said, yeah, I was in Charleston and
• 20:44
Speaker 3: I ran in the town center and she said, gosh,
• 20:46
Speaker 3: there's nothing there. And then you know, they started to
• 20:48
Speaker 3: asking questions about the city and the county. And I know,
• 20:51
Speaker 3: as you said, mayor good ones concerned about it. You
• 20:53
Speaker 3: guys are the commissioner concerned about it. However, it is
• 20:56
Speaker 3: still a private property.
• 20:57
Speaker 6: It's a private property, and it's going to play itself out,
• 21:00
Speaker 6: and it may take another year, it may take another
• 21:02
Speaker 6: five or six years, but it's going to play itself out.
• 21:04
Speaker 6: I mean, you can you think that was the plan?
• 21:06
Speaker 6: Or do you want to say no? I mean, you know,
• 21:07
Speaker 6: I've read some of the I've read some of the
• 21:10
Speaker 6: op eds. I've looked at the numbers. You know, obviously
• 21:13
Speaker 6: we get tax information. I don't know if that was
• 21:16
Speaker 6: the plan or not. I hope that nobody is that
• 21:19
Speaker 6: devious that they would buy a piece of property in
• 21:22
Speaker 6: the middle of you know, downtown in a city and
• 21:26
Speaker 6: let it rot simply for a tax deduction. I hope
• 21:29
  Speaker 6: that wasn't the plan. But I also think there's a
• 21:32
Speaker 6: lot of opportunity there. Regardless of what the plan is.
• 21:34
Speaker 6: This thing's going to come to a head at some point.
• 21:36
Speaker 6: And what would you like to see there?
• 21:38
Speaker 3: I know we talked about the Capital Sports Complex, but
• 21:40
Speaker 3: if you if you had your your wishes to come true,
• 21:44
Speaker 3: what would you like to see?
• 21:45
Speaker 6: Well, I think I think mayor Goodwin, I think the
• 21:47
Speaker 6: city Council have a lot of great ideas. You know,
• 21:50
Speaker 6: if it was me, I would love to see that
• 21:52
Speaker 6: be residential living and also commercial. So you look at
• 21:58
Speaker 6: what's the place the the where everybody goes in Columbus. Yeah, Yeah,
• 22:05
Speaker 6: it's like this outdoor mall e And so wouldn't it
• 22:08
Speaker 6: be cool to have like a mini Easton there where
• 22:10
Speaker 6: you've got shops and restaurants on the bottom floor, residential
• 22:14
  Speaker 6: living upstairs.
• 22:16
Speaker 3: Uh, that would be cool.
• 22:17
Speaker 6: It would require a lot of money, a lot of
• 22:20
Speaker 6: money for the demo of them all. It would require
• 22:22
Speaker 6: a lot of money for the construction. That would probably
• 22:24
Speaker 6: be a private construction. It's not something that the government
• 22:27
Speaker 6: would do, but that that would be cool and it
• 22:30
Speaker 6: would work, you know, it would work for a number
• 22:33
Speaker 6: of reason. Number one, you need more downtown living space.
• 22:37
Speaker 6: You know, if you look at there have been a
• 22:39
Speaker 6: lot of residential studies done in Charleston, and we need
• 22:42
Speaker 6: a lot more apartment buildings in in Charleston, not just downtown,
• 22:47
Speaker 6: but in South Hills and Kanas City. We need more
• 22:50
Speaker 6: living space so people can live and go to work
• 22:54
Speaker 6: and go to school. So so it would certainly work,
• 22:58
Speaker 6: and the restaurants and the shops would because you've got
• 23:00
Speaker 6: so many people downtown and you've got basically a captive
• 23:03
Speaker 6: audience if you've got people living there.
• 23:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, and that seems to be and I
• 23:08
Speaker 3: do a lot of because I'm a geek that way,
• 23:09
Speaker 3: I do a lot of reading about other cities and
• 23:11
Speaker 3: what they're doing, and that seems to be years ago.
• 23:14
Speaker 3: It was the suburbs, you know, everybody wanted to the
• 23:16
Speaker 3: apartments downtown or the or the homes were just primarily
• 23:20
Speaker 3: for the young people. Then they get a family and
• 23:21
Speaker 3: the first thing they want to do is move out
• 23:22
Speaker 3: to the suburbs. And that's all well and good. However,
• 23:25
Speaker 3: there seems to be a trend now nationwide when people
• 23:27
Speaker 3: are choosing downtown living for one reason or another. You
• 23:30
Speaker 3: get outside. I mean, we were born with car keys
• 23:33
Speaker 3: in our hand in West Virginia. That's or you know,
• 23:35
Speaker 3: but you get outside of West Virginia and that's a
• 23:37
Speaker 3: lot of times not the case. And people are looking
• 23:39
Speaker 3: for that. And there's even people that are relocating to
• 23:43
Speaker 3: Charleston in the Charleston area that are that are doing it.
• 23:46
Speaker 3: They want to live downtown. They want to be able
• 23:48
Speaker 3: to walk to the shops, they want to be able
• 23:49
Speaker 3: to go to the different events going on downtown. So
• 23:53
Speaker 3: I mean not that that would be a wonderful idea.
• 23:55
Speaker 3: I mean, because here's what everybody says, Ben, and you
• 23:57
Speaker 3: know this, everybody says, well, we need in name here
• 24:00
Speaker 3: you know, we need a Dave in Busters. My former
• 24:03
Speaker 3: producer Caitlin that was really thing she wanted to Dave
• 24:05
Speaker 3: and Busters all. Well and good. No store is going
• 24:09
Speaker 3: to save the town center. I mean, and there's no
• 24:12
Speaker 3: one or two stores that are going to save the
• 24:15
  Speaker 3: town center. Well.
• 24:16
Speaker 6: And also I made it very clear that the Capital
• 24:18
Speaker 6: Sports Complex would not save the town Center because I
• 24:21
Speaker 6: don't think you would be able to drive enough traffic
• 24:23
Speaker 6: through that sports complex to then people go shop and eat. Now,
• 24:28
Speaker 6: I think it would help with the restaurants, but not
• 24:30
Speaker 6: necessarily the shopping. I mean maybe if it was a
• 24:32
Speaker 6: sports store or something in there. But I you know,
• 24:35
Speaker 6: a lot of a lot of malls in smaller cities
• 24:40
Speaker 6: all over the country are failing. So it's it's not
• 24:43
Speaker 6: a surprise. Now if you've got a big, you know,
• 24:46
Speaker 6: uh mall in Charlotte or you know a city with
• 24:50
Speaker 6: a very large population, those are still thriving. But I
• 24:54
Speaker 6: think you're going to see a lot of malls in
• 24:55
Speaker 6: smaller cities that are that are experienced the same thing
• 24:58
Speaker 6: as the town Center. And it's a combination of a
• 25:01
Speaker 6: lot of different things. I mean, here, if you look
• 25:03
Speaker 6: at it, if you really go back and look at it.
• 25:05
Speaker 6: You had cord or g come in. So you've got
• 25:07
Speaker 6: people going out there to go to Low's and to
• 25:09
Speaker 6: go to Target and Walmart. If that was downtown, I
• 25:12
Speaker 6: would imagine the mall would still be doing Farewell. You've
• 25:16
Speaker 6: got Amazon. It's so easy to pick up your phone,
• 25:19
Speaker 6: go to an app and order whatever you need and
• 25:21
Speaker 6: be there the next day or two days later instead
• 25:24
Speaker 6: of going to the mall. Right, so there's a lot
• 25:27
Speaker 6: of convenience now that we didn't have in the nineteen
• 25:30
Speaker 6: eighties and nineteen nineties, and so I think a combination
• 25:32
Speaker 6: of those things has led to where we are. But
• 25:36
Speaker 6: you're seeing that all over the country. This is not
• 25:38
Speaker 6: unique to Charleston, and people are solving it differently. Some
• 25:40
Speaker 6: people some cities are using the malls for recreation. Some
• 25:45
Speaker 6: of them are putting flea markets in there. They're trying
• 25:48
Speaker 6: to figure out what to do with that space. And
• 25:51
Speaker 6: so I know the mayor is definitely working on it.
• 25:54
Speaker 6: It is on her radar, and I think she has
• 25:58
Speaker 6: some great ideas on it.
• 25:59
Speaker 3: But I will say that and I agree with everything
• 26:01
Speaker 3: you said, but I will say not all the malls
• 26:03
Speaker 3: are dying though. I mean, if you go to the
• 26:05
Speaker 3: Huntington Mall right now, I mean it is, it's booming.
• 26:08
Speaker 3: It like it it never it never dipped it off.
• 26:10
Speaker 3: But they've done some other things in the Huntington Mall.
• 26:12
Speaker 6: Well think about now, think about that. What do you
• 26:14
Speaker 6: have near the Huntington Mall. You've got all the box
• 26:16
Speaker 6: stores and so it's not like they if they put
• 26:19
Speaker 6: those somewhere else, if they had the box store somewhere else,
• 26:22
Speaker 6: the Huntington Mall would be in trouble or.
• 26:23
Speaker 3: Barbara good point. But it's all there.
• 26:26
Speaker 6: You've got all You've got your you know, your restaurants,
• 26:29
Speaker 6: you've got your fast food, you've got your box stores.
• 26:32
Speaker 6: And so people will then go to Low's or they'll
• 26:35
Speaker 6: go to you know, pick your favorite box store, and
• 26:37
Speaker 6: then they'll go to the mall where they'll go to
• 26:39
Speaker 6: the mall and then go to dinner. Uh, we don't
• 26:41
Speaker 6: have that here. It's spread out.
• 26:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, but but there are and I said this last
• 26:45
Speaker 3: week on the show Commissioner, there are a lot of
• 26:48
Speaker 3: good things going on in downtown Charleston right now. I
• 26:50
Speaker 3: mean I mean really, I mean you come in and
• 26:52
Speaker 3: the map had the mayor on the show Monday, you know,
• 26:54
Speaker 3: you come in, the first thing you see if you
• 26:56
Speaker 3: get off Virginia Street is giant cranes. You know, that's
• 26:59
Speaker 3: the first thing you see. The progress TC and so
• 27:02
Speaker 3: on time. That's right.
• 27:03
Speaker 6: I say, if you go to a city and you
• 27:04
  Speaker 6: don't see a crane, there's there's something bad going on.
• 27:07
Speaker 6: You know, they're stagnant. And so seeing cranes in Charleston
• 27:11
Speaker 6: is wonderful and it's it's a testament to the great
• 27:13
Speaker 6: job that Mayor Goodwin's been doing. You know, if you
• 27:15
Speaker 6: look at what's happened over the last eight years, she
• 27:20
Speaker 6: brought the regatta back. Now I'm paying I'm paying the
• 27:22

Speaker 3: receiving and transferring of stolen property, and also destruction of

• 33:05
Speaker 3: About cell phones because we talked a little bit about
• 33:08
Speaker 3: on the show yesterday and also on Metro News Midday yesterday.
• 33:10
Speaker 3: The legislature has passed a bill that says that cell
• 33:14
Speaker 3: phones are effectively effectively, well, there's gonna be changes to
• 33:20
Speaker 3: cell phone policies and schools in West Virginia. All fifty
• 33:22
Speaker 3: five counties have to a certain date to come up
• 33:24
Speaker 3: with a plan. Fayette County, Mond County has already been
• 33:27
Speaker 3: on at Canawah County school Board met on Monday to
• 33:30
Speaker 3: talk about it. And there's still a lot of questions.
• 33:32
Speaker 3: And I will say that I did reach out yesterday
• 33:35
Speaker 3: to officials with Canawa County Schools about coming on to
• 33:39
Speaker 3: talk about it and what these changes are going to
• 33:44
Speaker 3: mean for not only kids, but also parents and grandparents
• 33:47
Speaker 3: as well, but they wanted to wait until the public
• 33:50
Speaker 3: comment period is over, which just looked completely understandable. And
• 33:56
Speaker 3: I don't want to appear like I'm beating the proverbial
• 33:59
Speaker 3: dead horse here, But whatever or however they decide to
• 34:05
Speaker 3: make these changes in the school system, breathe in, Mommy
• 34:10
Speaker 3: and daddy, you're not going to be able to contact
• 34:13
Speaker 3: your kids at any time or vice versa. Although as
• 34:16
  Speaker 3: I said, I have a feeling it's going to be
• 34:18
Speaker 3: a much bigger deal to the parents than what it
• 34:20
Speaker 3: is to the kids. And it's all going to be
• 34:25
Speaker 3: it's all going to come down to the details and
• 34:26
Speaker 3: how they work this out, because and I brought this
• 34:29
Speaker 3: point up yesterday. You remember when you were in public school,
• 34:33
Speaker 3: and you know, if you had seven class periods or
• 34:36
Speaker 3: whatever it may be, you had seven different ways of
• 34:40
Speaker 3: discipline from those teachers inside those classrooms. You knew what
• 34:44
Speaker 3: you could get by with in Miss Jones's class that
• 34:47
Speaker 3: you couldn't get by in mister Smith's class, and you
• 34:50
Speaker 3: know and we all know that. So they've got to
• 34:53
Speaker 3: take a look at how this is going to work.
• 34:55
Speaker 3: And other school systems have done things, and it's been
• 34:58
Speaker 3: talked about here in Kannak County system where you bring
• 35:02
Speaker 3: the students have this. They can have the phones, but
• 35:06
Speaker 3: they're they're locked away in a bag. And in some
• 35:12
Speaker 3: school systems has been done across the country at the
• 35:15
Speaker 3: beginning of class the teachers basically pull out a bucket
• 35:18
Speaker 3: and say, put your phones in the bucket, and that's
• 35:23
Speaker 3: how it's done. So the county school systems, kanaw and
• 35:27
Speaker 3: all the others have got to come up with some
• 35:29
Speaker 3: sort of a plan and then report back. And the
• 35:31
Speaker 3: Kanawh County schools have just started this process. As I said,
• 35:34
Speaker 3: I talked to one school board member yesterday and also
• 35:37
Speaker 3: had communication with the superintendent's office. We have a new
• 35:39
Speaker 3: superintendent of course, Canan County, Paula Potter, and so we
• 35:44
Speaker 3: welcome aboard, miss Superintendent Potter, because you got to kind
• 35:47
Speaker 3: of you and other's got to kind of deal with this.
• 35:49
Speaker 3: But there is a there is a public comment, parental
• 35:52
Speaker 3: comment period. I guess about this, so they kind of
• 35:54
Speaker 3: want to hold off to comment on it until they
• 35:57
Speaker 3: get the comments from the public, which, as I said,
• 36:00
Speaker 3: I understand that at this point. But if you feel
• 36:04
Speaker 3: strongly about it one way or the other, I would
• 36:06
Speaker 3: say you need to probably start attending to school board
• 36:08
Speaker 3: meeting or contacting your Knawk County board members, because one
• 36:12
Speaker 3: way or the other, the legislature has passed this. And look,
• 36:15
Speaker 3: some schools are already doing this. And I had talked
• 36:19
Speaker 3: yesterday after the show, I talked to a friend of mine,
• 36:22
Speaker 3: and I brought this up. On midday yesterday, I talked
• 36:24
Speaker 3: to a friend of mine who is a parent of
• 36:27
Speaker 3: two kids in Kanawh County schools. They go to two
• 36:29
Speaker 3: different schools, and one school has a cell phone policy
• 36:32
Speaker 3: already and the other one doesn't. And I just think
• 36:37
Speaker 3: that we somehow have got to be on board here,
• 36:41
Speaker 3: and you may think differently. And I always get accused of,
• 36:43
Speaker 3: you know, talking about these things about the problem with
• 36:46
Speaker 3: cell phones, and you know, and I'm a non parent
• 36:48
Speaker 3: and I shouldn't be talking about things like that, but
• 36:50
Speaker 3: I know what I've seen. You know, even though I
• 36:53
Speaker 3: am not a parent. My previous job, I spent a
• 36:56
Speaker 3: lot of time in schools around the state of West Virginia,
• 36:58
Speaker 3: and I saw firsthand what the you know, the problems was.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: Kids just you know, at lunch, you know, just walk
• 37:05
Speaker 3: right into you. But the teachers are just as big
• 37:09
Speaker 3: a problem. I can remember one instance when I was
• 37:12
Speaker 3: speaking to a class on civics and the kids being
• 37:16
Speaker 3: kids two o'clock in the afternoon. We'll get a little unruly,
• 37:18
Speaker 3: not exactly that interested on what mister Allen is talking
• 37:21
Speaker 3: about that day, about the you know of about the
• 37:24
Speaker 3: importance of registering to vote or whatever. And I look
• 37:28
Speaker 3: over to the teacher, and I'm not going to say where,
• 37:30
Speaker 3: I will say it wasn't in Kanaha County, though it
• 37:32
Speaker 3: was in another county. I look over and the teacher
• 37:34
Speaker 3: is scrolling Instagram or Facebook or something like little help here,
• 37:37
Speaker 3: please teacher, let me tag you in here. So either way,
• 37:41
Speaker 3: there's going to be a whole lot of people that
• 37:43
Speaker 3: aren't necessarily going to be happy about it. Texas Dave,
• 37:47
Speaker 3: the problem with kids is their parents. They want to
• 37:50
Speaker 3: be their friend and not a proper guide through childhood. Well, again,
• 37:53
  Speaker 3: I don't disagree with what you're saying, but I also
• 37:56
Speaker 3: don't like to get into ground that I shouldn't be
• 38:00
Speaker 3: when it comes to something because I don't know what
• 38:02
Speaker 3: it's like to raise a kid. I've never raised a kid.
• 38:04
Speaker 3: I'm once known as child free by choice. My wife
• 38:07
Speaker 3: and I made that decision years ago not to have kids.
• 38:09
Speaker 3: Haven't regretted it one bit. But you know, everybody's different.
• 38:13
Speaker 3: So but a lot of times from what my friends
• 38:16
Speaker 3: and our parents and now at my age grandparents are saying,
• 38:19
Speaker 3: that can be a problem as well. But Dave Island
• 38:21

• 38:35

• 38:38
Speaker 3: are you going to prepare for these changes, because again,
• 38:40
Speaker 3: one way or the other, no matter what plans are
• 38:42
Speaker 3: adopted by our county school systems, you're not going to
• 38:45
Speaker 3: be able to contact your kid during the day. They're
• 38:48
Speaker 3: not going to be able to contact you, at least
• 38:50
Speaker 3: for certain portions of the day. You're not going to

Speaker 3: win a twenty twenty five royal infield Himalayan four to
• 42:37
Speaker 3: fifty plus one thousand bucks in cash. You do have
• 42:40
Speaker 3: to be present to win, though, and we'll call you
• 42:43
  Speaker 3: and we'll let you know, Okay, you're a finalist. You've
• 42:45
Speaker 3: got to be on the lot here at Trojan landing,
• 42:47
Speaker 3: but go and register at one of those spots that
• 42:50
Speaker 3: we that I just told you about. Again, there's about
• 42:52
Speaker 3: twenty or so information is available on our websites and
• 42:54
Speaker 3: also on our social media, and somebody's gonna win that
• 42:57
Speaker 3: bike plus some cash too. Could be it could be you.
• 43:01
Speaker 3: I haven't had an update in a couple of days
• 43:04
Speaker 3: from the folks at the lottery. We told you the
• 43:07
Speaker 3: story a couple of days ago that there were two
• 43:10
Speaker 3: separate million dollar Powerball tickets that were sold here in
• 43:14
Speaker 3: the kanav Valley and they as of two days ago,
• 43:18
Speaker 3: remain unclaimed. One of those tickets was sold at the
• 43:21
Speaker 3: Parmar store on Main Street in Hurricane. The other was
• 43:24
Speaker 3: sold at Marty Graus Casino in Resort as of two
• 43:28
Speaker 3: days ago, and I think we probably would have had
• 43:31
Speaker 3: some information from them about that. As two days ago,
• 43:35
Speaker 3: nobody had claimed it. And so there's there's two potential
• 43:40
Speaker 3: millionaires that are out there right now that bought tickets
• 43:44
Speaker 3: at the Parmar location in Hurricane and also at Marty
• 43:47
Speaker 3: Gras and have not claimed him yet. And if you
• 43:50
Speaker 3: don't claim those and the time is running out to
• 43:53
Speaker 3: claim it. So if you bought a ticket in one
• 43:55
Speaker 3: of those locations earlier in the year, I'd say, you
• 43:57
Speaker 3: might want to go dig out that ticket and find
• 43:59
  Speaker 3: out if you're one a millillion dollars. I just can't.
• 44:01
Speaker 3: I just can't wrap my head around the fact. You know,
• 44:05
Speaker 3: if I bought a lottery ticket and then heard on
• 44:08
Speaker 3: the news that the place where I bought the ticket
• 44:13
Speaker 3: there was a million dollar winter, I'd be I'd be
• 44:15
Speaker 3: taking a look at my tickets, I think. But anyway, Uh,
• 44:19
Speaker 3: that's kind of how it is. DJ Meadows is here.
• 44:23
Speaker 3: How long do you have to claim it? It depends
• 44:26
Speaker 3: on when it was purchased. And we had Katie Smith
• 44:29
Speaker 3: and the new lottery director, David Bradley in midday last week.
• 44:32
  Speaker 3: So it's it's so many days and I don't know
• 44:36
Speaker 3: exactly how many it is, but the approach that the
• 44:39
Speaker 3: time is coming and then it just goes back. I mean,
• 44:42
Speaker 3: it just goes back. And if they don't want people
• 44:45
Speaker 3: to know it's them, maybe they're trying to fill in
• 44:47
Speaker 3: an LLC or do you have to do that? Do
• 44:48
Speaker 3: you still have to tell in Virginia you can remain anonymous, okay,
• 44:52
Speaker 3: you I mean you have to tell somebody, you know.
• 44:53
Speaker 3: But but you can go as the best I understand it.
• 44:56
Speaker 3: You can go with the lottery and you can sign
• 44:58
Speaker 3: the paperwork and remain a nomo so you don't have
• 44:59
Speaker 3: to do the press conference, so you don't have to
• 45:01
Speaker 3: get the giant check or anything like. It's one hundred
• 45:03
Speaker 3: and eighty days, says the text. One hundred eighty days. Yeah,
• 45:06
Speaker 3: and one of them. I know one of the tickets
• 45:09
Speaker 3: was purchased in March and the other one I'm not
• 45:11
Speaker 3: off the toime. I had not sure when it was purchased,
• 45:13
Speaker 3: but the time, regardless is approaching. So you've got that ticket.
• 45:19
Speaker 3: You know, if you bought it one of those two locations,
• 45:20
Speaker 3: you might want to go check. Maybe they bought it
• 45:22
Speaker 3: like as a birthday present for somebody, gave it to
• 45:24
Speaker 3: somebody in that person and still setting in a car. Yeah,
• 45:27
Speaker 3: it just got thrown away with the car. Oh jeez.
• 45:30
Speaker 3: It kind of makes you sick to your stomach. To
• 45:31
Speaker 3: give the state a million dollars back older adults or
• 45:34
Speaker 3: protect themselves against severe respiratory disease. Talk to your doctor
• 45:36
Speaker 3: about flu, COVID nineteen and RSV vaccines riskless, do more
• 45:40
Speaker 3: get started? Vaccines not GOV paid for by the US
• 45:42
Speaker 3: Department of Health and Human Services. Yes, this is TJ.
• 45:45
Speaker 3: Meadows text says before smartphones, teachers and kids had cigarettes
• 45:49
Speaker 3: to pass time during the school day. Phones are definitely
• 45:52
Speaker 3: a better alternative in your high school day. You're about
• 45:56
Speaker 3: ten years or so younger than I am, maybe more
• 45:59
Speaker 3: I look younger. I'm forty four kid, okay, eleven, I'm
• 46:03
Speaker 3: eleven years older than you are. Okay. So did you
• 46:06
Speaker 3: hear your school have a smoking area?
• 46:08
  Speaker 2: No?
• 46:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, we did, didn't you really? Yes, we had a
• 46:11
Speaker 3: payphone though. We had a payphone, which uh shout out
• 46:16
Speaker 3: to Billy Rife, guy went to high school with who
• 46:19
Speaker 3: liked to call in bomb threats at school, thinking he
• 46:22
Speaker 3: wouldn't get caught if he said, can I have a
• 46:26
Speaker 3: pass for the bathroom? And he would walk right out
• 46:28
Speaker 3: and drop a drop, a drop, a dime or whatever
• 46:30
Speaker 3: it was at the time of quarter into the payphone.
• 46:33
Speaker 3: He did it. He did it like several times. We
• 46:35
Speaker 3: called him bomb threat Billy? Did he eventually become a
• 46:38
Speaker 3: productive member? I think I did. I think he did.
• 46:41
Speaker 3: I think he I think congrats Billy, turn it around, buddy.
• 46:43
Speaker 3: I don't know where Billy is now, but where but
• 46:45
Speaker 3: now he I actually was friends with him on social media.
• 46:48
Speaker 3: I don't know whether I am now or not, but
• 46:49
Speaker 3: he turned his life around. So what you got on
