- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat podcasting in you shirtless, severely bug
- 0:13Speaker 1: bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You can't
- 0:18Speaker 1: predict anything, Yanni, Um, you new haircut. I'm sorry about haircut?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Your new haircut? Yes, just like kind of I love it. Yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yanni's got a butch. Yanni's daughters helped to give him
- 0:39Speaker 1: a butch. You call us, but it's borderline butch. You
- 0:44Speaker 1: feel like this is an endearing term, but that that's
- 0:47Speaker 1: just one little like a like a three on your
- 0:51Speaker 1: we're all haircater sister. Do you use the wall clippers? Yeah?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Those are the those are the jam dude. I'm so
- 0:58Speaker 1: jealous that haircut. Do you think I'm too thin on
- 1:01Speaker 1: top to run that haircut? I don't think we'll know
- 1:03Speaker 1: until you try. Nice thing about it is it grows
- 1:06Speaker 1: out pretty in quick. But you know how you don't
- 1:08Speaker 1: like when everyone has the same haircut. If I got
- 1:11Speaker 1: that haircut, I think it's like military style because that's
- 1:15Speaker 1: what I call it, more of just like a buzz cut.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I don't I don't even know what butch means. Butch
- 1:20Speaker 1: to me has a different negative connotation for for you
- 1:25Speaker 1: know what I'm talking. Let's tackle that for a minute. Okay,
- 1:28Speaker 1: but um, I do want to get into that. I
- 1:30Speaker 1: know folks referred to that style of haircut as a
- 1:33Speaker 1: butcher cut. Dude, not growing up, butchut, that's a butcher cut.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It's like they're there and there. You could have a
- 1:43Speaker 1: word mean two different things. Oh, you definitely could. Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I just never heard it called a butcher cut, but
- 1:50Speaker 1: not or a butch Yeah, that's a When I went
- 1:54Speaker 1: on my first date. When I went on my first
- 1:56Speaker 1: date with my wife, it was a four day date
- 1:58Speaker 1: and I had just gotten one of because I used
- 2:00Speaker 1: to get those, and she made me she doesn't like
- 2:03Speaker 1: him as much, but I got one. And I remember
- 2:04Speaker 1: on our first date, which spanned a number of days. Um,
- 2:09Speaker 1: three people asked if I was in the military. Yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you do get that, especially if you walk around like
- 2:17Speaker 1: war Tex hoodie with a yeah, because you got a
- 2:19Speaker 1: USA you got a US A match and a short
- 2:22Speaker 1: haircut you got like you got a map of Faluja
- 2:26Speaker 1: tattoo tattooed on your chest America. Are you at the point,
- 2:32Speaker 1: Steve Stephen Ronnella where you are getting sunburned on the
- 2:36Speaker 1: top of your head? No? No, And and I felt
- 2:40Speaker 1: like I was standing out, but I feel like it's
- 2:42Speaker 1: thickened back up again. That's not possible. Tell us about
- 2:49Speaker 1: what product you've been using. Nothing. I use a medicated
- 2:53Speaker 1: champ I use. I have a skin condition on my
- 2:57Speaker 1: scalp and the next on the sides of my nose,
- 3:00Speaker 1: So I use a medicaid shampoo if it's bothering me.
- 3:03Speaker 1: If not, I use whatever's in the shower. You know
- 3:06Speaker 1: what I mean. Are you a daily shampoo er? No,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I don't take a shower every day, dude. I take
- 3:11Speaker 1: a shower like I take a shower every three days.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And then do you shampoo? Oh? Yeah, if I get
- 3:16Speaker 1: in there, I'm shampoo. Let's let's let's take a pull
- 3:19Speaker 1: on showers two to three days right now. But typical
- 3:23Speaker 1: when I'm like up and running, when you're not crashing
- 3:26Speaker 1: at a buddy's house. Yeah, I'm a shower every day
- 3:29Speaker 1: a guy, Yeah, every day, But I I do if
- 3:33Speaker 1: more to wake up, that's time. Even if I'm clean,
- 3:36Speaker 1: you don't feel grimy like you don't feel like I
- 3:38Speaker 1: could wake up when I wake up in the morning.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I typically I don't change my clothes. I don't unless
- 3:47Speaker 1: i'm like coming down to the office, and I feel
- 3:49Speaker 1: like I should I'll wear I'll wear my saying I
- 3:52Speaker 1: wake up and put my same clothes back on, change
- 3:56Speaker 1: my ownies, put my same clothes back on. I'll do
- 3:58Speaker 1: that for a few days, even shirt. Sometimes I don't
- 4:03Speaker 1: like to generate a lot of laundry, and I don't
- 4:06Speaker 1: like to be getting in and out of the shower
- 4:07Speaker 1: and having to dry off all the time. Would it
- 4:09Speaker 1: be safe to say that you're just the general principle
- 4:11Speaker 1: is low maintenance. That's why you like the haircut. That's
- 4:14Speaker 1: why I don't look a lot of laundry. I like
- 4:16Speaker 1: that haircut. I don't like my kids leave the mono laundry.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They generate a staggering Oh yeah, buddy, tell me about it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And it's frowned upon to throw your kids in the
- 4:27Speaker 1: same clothes and send them back out to school. I
- 4:29Speaker 1: do it whenever I can. Yeah. I had words my
- 4:32Speaker 1: mother in law not long ago about that. She was
- 4:35Speaker 1: really upset that I did it, and I said, I've
- 4:36Speaker 1: been doing that my entire life, and look at me,
- 4:38Speaker 1: I'm fine. Um. The only time you have to say,
- 4:43Speaker 1: look at me, I'm fine. It's been a game changer
- 4:46Speaker 1: is I've taught my girls to when they take their
- 4:48Speaker 1: clothes off, to turn them right side out and put
- 4:50Speaker 1: them into the dirty laundry bin. So because I think
- 4:53Speaker 1: when you're folding, you spend more time turning the closes
- 4:57Speaker 1: right side out and you do actually fold them. That's true.
- 5:00Speaker 1: That helps. That's a good thing to teach your kids. Yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 1: because I think parents of young kids, you can start
- 5:04Speaker 1: to feel like all you do is laundry. Yeah, if
- 5:09Speaker 1: I don't have meaningful the reason I don't engage. I
- 5:12Speaker 1: handle the cooking in the house, and I handle a
- 5:14Speaker 1: lot of the dishwashing and whatnot for the most part.
- 5:17Speaker 1: But I don't engage in laundry outside of my own
- 5:19Speaker 1: laundry because I don't have meaningful input. Meaningful input to
- 5:24Speaker 1: me looks like, uh, what constitutes a dirty towel, what
- 5:29Speaker 1: constitutes dirty clothes? My definition is different than my wife's.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So I would have them get up and put the
- 5:36Speaker 1: same clothes back on again for several days if need be.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And I don't believe in separating your colors heavens now no.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So since since I'm like, I will do family laundry
- 5:51Speaker 1: if if I can move the move the rules here
- 5:58Speaker 1: a little bit in my direction. But since people are
- 6:00Speaker 1: unwilling to move in my direction on a couple of
- 6:03Speaker 1: key things, I don't engage. That sounds fair. It strikes
- 6:09Speaker 1: my involvement. It comes with full involvement. If you want this,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you're getting the whole thing. Now, it strikes me that
- 6:18Speaker 1: we all have You have zero kids, I have one
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yoanni has two. You have three. So we have all levels.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It's pretty much covered. We got it all covered. So
- 6:26Speaker 1: we have every level of child rearing. So cal has
- 6:30Speaker 1: no laundry to do. I have a small amount of amount,
- 6:33Speaker 1: a larger amount for and then even a larger amount
- 6:36Speaker 1: of infinite infinite laundry. Uh speaking all that, look at
- 6:40Speaker 1: this segue. Um, we're talking about cleanliness, right, what do
- 6:46Speaker 1: you put in when you're doing laundry? What do you
- 6:48Speaker 1: what do you put in there in a little receptacle
- 6:50Speaker 1: up top laundry detergent? Well, yeah, but you could also
- 6:53Speaker 1: sit call it guys sent in um better fat. Yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I gotta sending a bunch of soap that he makes
- 6:59Speaker 1: some game fat. I like this guy, which is cool,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the dude, uh farmcare soaps. Now, obviously you run into
- 7:07Speaker 1: a problem with like uh selling wild game parts, which
- 7:09Speaker 1: I don't know the rules when you're making soap, like
- 7:13Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know the rules on that. You
- 7:15Speaker 1: can't sell the meat, right, you can sell you can
- 7:16Speaker 1: sell a bear hide, you can't sell bear meat. I
- 7:19Speaker 1: don't know where you're at if you're selling bear fat soap.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But he plays it safe and doesn't sell the bear
- 7:24Speaker 1: fat soap, but people will. He has friends I gather
- 7:28Speaker 1: who will bring him deer fat and bear fat and
- 7:30Speaker 1: he'll make him up some soap he send his soap
- 7:33Speaker 1: made out of this is bear grease or bear oil.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And then what's interesting is there's a way that soap dudes, Um,
- 7:41Speaker 1: there's the way that soap dudes like score soap. Well,
- 7:44Speaker 1: the thing called I haven't read this is carefully as
- 7:47Speaker 1: I wish I had read it. Uh, And he's got
- 7:50Speaker 1: this little breakdown here. He breaks down all the wild
- 7:53Speaker 1: all the wild fat, like how salmon oil performs, how
- 7:56Speaker 1: bear tallow. He's even got how rabbit tallow so like,
- 8:00Speaker 1: rabbit fats attributes, goose fat attributes, regular pigs, mink oil attributes.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And then the number which is called an I S
- 8:12Speaker 1: I N S number, which I'm gonna have to look
- 8:14Speaker 1: up the highest rancor the highest number is um dear
- 8:20Speaker 1: tallow has the highest I N S value. Whatever the
- 8:23Speaker 1: hell that is? Iodine and sap. I like this guy's uh,
- 8:31Speaker 1: he's covering all his bases with this one. Speaking of
- 8:34Speaker 1: deer tallo, he's from Elkton, Maryland. He's got a picture
- 8:40Speaker 1: of a secret deer and the ingredient is deer tallow. Yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 1: got got her all covered. I think he's making a
- 8:48Speaker 1: nod towards Maryland. There soap. He also makes a sap
- 8:51Speaker 1: which I don't get and it doesn't excite me at all.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Is Cabernet saviognan. Because you don't mean you're not a soap.
- 8:58Speaker 1: You're a soap every three day. Have you a soap
- 9:00Speaker 1: every day? Guy? You would understand that's a look how
- 9:03Speaker 1: it's smell it? Give it a give it a smell.
- 9:05Speaker 1: This this honey and lemon is delicious. This one has
- 9:08Speaker 1: the vague outline of the word soap on it, as
- 9:12Speaker 1: if to say he's got a lot of other things
- 9:14Speaker 1: laying around that looked like that. You scratched soap. Some
- 9:21Speaker 1: companies will scratch the word dial do it. You just
- 9:25Speaker 1: scratched the word soap into it because it could be
- 9:27Speaker 1: in a chalk, could be in a race, or you
- 9:28Speaker 1: don't know what that because this is like a This
- 9:30Speaker 1: is a level of wild game that I haven't touched
- 9:33Speaker 1: on yet. But I think it's pretty damn interesting. I
- 9:35Speaker 1: think it's very interesting, and I think everybody here probably
- 9:39Speaker 1: feels the same way to a degree. When you turn
- 9:42Speaker 1: a certain corner, you or at a level of commitment
- 9:48Speaker 1: where your life allows for nothing else. Though, Like I
- 9:52Speaker 1: feel like if all of a sudden I was in
- 9:54Speaker 1: the soap making game in addition to canning, preserve, bang, yeah,
- 10:01Speaker 1: the general putting up of meat, then it's like you
- 10:04Speaker 1: gotta have somebody else with another four of income in
- 10:06Speaker 1: the household. Do you become the soap guy? Right? You
- 10:09Speaker 1: do it so much like yeah, tim old Timy makes soap.
- 10:13Speaker 1: That's like your person, that's your identity. At some point
- 10:15Speaker 1: it's like, yeah, so you got to figure out all
- 10:17Speaker 1: the way. I'm jealous of it, but I don't. I'm
- 10:19Speaker 1: not gonna just to be in total Honestly, I'm not
- 10:21Speaker 1: gonna start making my own soap for my wild game.
- 10:24Speaker 1: But Yanni's wife wants to make some soap up the
- 10:26Speaker 1: many reason. She wants me to kill a fall bear
- 10:30Speaker 1: so it has a whole bunch of fat. Yeah, but
- 10:31Speaker 1: why not do it with the deer? Why not? I
- 10:34Speaker 1: guess Yeah, we get trying. She just already have I
- 10:39Speaker 1: took some of those out of the box. Have you
- 10:40Speaker 1: been using it at home now that your hair still
- 10:42Speaker 1: short and you scrub your head with bar soap? I
- 10:45Speaker 1: haven't done that yet. We've just been using it as
- 10:47Speaker 1: a hand soap in our downstairs bathroom because you know
- 10:50Speaker 1: it's so nice and fancy you kind of want, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: guests and everybody. No, I would say this is is
- 10:54Speaker 1: this artisan? As an overused word? Ship man? I think
- 10:59Speaker 1: the me and lemon is what we've been Uh that
- 11:02Speaker 1: artist and bread? You got, not artist and bread? Hey,
- 11:05Speaker 1: taste moving on a dude. Uh, we're gonna talk about
- 11:10Speaker 1: turkeys on turkeys. Uh, this is something we've have. We
- 11:15Speaker 1: talked about this before. A guy wrote in his saying, like, man,
- 11:18Speaker 1: you Fellers got it all wrong, saying um killed. I
- 11:24Speaker 1: shouldn't say you killed a turkey, he said, you should
- 11:28Speaker 1: say harvested it, because you're just playing into the anti
- 11:31Speaker 1: hunter's hands by saying he killed it. I I understand
- 11:37Speaker 1: I do, But I feel like a big part of
- 11:42Speaker 1: I feel like the game has been lost if we
- 11:47Speaker 1: become so detached from the fact that meat in order
- 11:52Speaker 1: to eat meat, death is associated with it. It doesn't
- 11:56Speaker 1: have to be meat, mind you, whatever you eat your
- 12:00Speaker 1: in it. Very true. But if a farmer told me
- 12:06Speaker 1: I went out and harvest did that field of corn?
- 12:11Speaker 1: I picture what he's talking about. If a farmer told me,
- 12:13Speaker 1: you know what, I went out killed all that corn
- 12:15Speaker 1: in that field? What if he said I would think
- 12:19Speaker 1: that he, uh put round up on it. I spent
- 12:22Speaker 1: a lot of time. I spent a lot of time
- 12:24Speaker 1: thinking about this. Why. I don't know, because it annoys me.
- 12:28Speaker 1: The harvest thing annoys me. It's like, why are you watering?
- 12:30Speaker 1: Why are you watering down the thing you're doing? Like,
- 12:32Speaker 1: we'll just admit to what what you're doing. The need
- 12:35Speaker 1: to have a word two cloak that we're killing a
- 12:39Speaker 1: thing is an issue to me. Well, no, because it
- 12:41Speaker 1: implies using Now you kill the animal, you harvest the meat. Yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you're harvesting, like you're not. The thing that harvest doesn't
- 12:50Speaker 1: get to is that you didn't put the animal there.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You put the corn there. But you didn't put that.
- 12:54Speaker 1: You didn't plant the animal and grow it there like
- 12:57Speaker 1: that animal is there, happened to be where you were
- 13:00Speaker 1: from from our standpoint, just by happenstance, good point. Harvest
- 13:04Speaker 1: does imply, but accept it like farm animal, You're not
- 13:07Speaker 1: going to change the wording. You don't harvest of you
- 13:10Speaker 1: don't harvest some beef. Yeah, listen to this though. Slaughter sure,
- 13:15Speaker 1: or kill no, But that's what I'm saying. No farmers,
- 13:18Speaker 1: no rancher would say, um, I killed the we killed
- 13:23Speaker 1: the pig, slaughter to the pig, which to me has
- 13:28Speaker 1: a connotation of just like it means killing farm animals.
- 13:34Speaker 1: We're getting into some murky water because I do think
- 13:36Speaker 1: like the lower the numbers, the more you would here
- 13:40Speaker 1: kill like hey I had I went out and killed
- 13:43Speaker 1: lamb this morning. Yeah, but now listen to this. I
- 13:48Speaker 1: just just thought of this because we talked about this
- 13:51Speaker 1: um in a different way. But reap what you sow?
- 13:56Speaker 1: The term reap right, that gets used all the time
- 14:02Speaker 1: and like kind of maccab ways of killing people like
- 14:06Speaker 1: the grim reaper. Yeah, a ridge reapers called the ridge
- 14:11Speaker 1: reapers reper camels. And when you when you technically or
- 14:16Speaker 1: not technically when you some people call going behind the
- 14:19Speaker 1: fan of a turkey and and and approaching a turkey,
- 14:22Speaker 1: they call that reaping really because you're taking like a
- 14:27Speaker 1: scythe and cutting it low, cutting it well, But that
- 14:31Speaker 1: is like I went out and reaped the field today, right,
- 14:38Speaker 1: Do you know where I'm going with this? No, not
- 14:40Speaker 1: at all. That's the literal definition of the y. And
- 14:44Speaker 1: then the figurative would be if you return to like
- 14:47Speaker 1: the return to the world harvest, like in the definition
- 14:50Speaker 1: of the word harvest is crop. Right, the definition of
- 14:53Speaker 1: crop is something that you produced yourself. You grew it,
- 14:56Speaker 1: You harvested your crop. You did not grow that, dear,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you did not. Even if you set up a you know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: like our boy Mark Kenyon set up an environment where
- 15:05Speaker 1: the deer likes to live and then sneak in there
- 15:06Speaker 1: and kill it, you didn't grow it there. People gave
- 15:10Speaker 1: it a place to live. You kind of grew you
- 15:12Speaker 1: kind of grew it, but you didn't grow. Then, if
- 15:14Speaker 1: you're high fense situation where you're putting ear tags and things,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and you're if you're breeding, if you're breeding a deer,
- 15:23Speaker 1: maybe we can start to get having. Yeah, if you
- 15:25Speaker 1: make them breed, the deer comes out and then you
- 15:28Speaker 1: put it out in a little fence and kill it. Yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: you probably did harvest Probably is a crop at that point.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Our new babysitter just came off of working on a
- 15:38Speaker 1: do your operation in New Zealand where they harvest the
- 15:41Speaker 1: velvet and harvesting the velvet, you know, get a couple
- 15:47Speaker 1: of velvet, harvests off it, then they slaughter it. For me,
- 15:52Speaker 1: I would I would agree with that. If you went
- 15:55Speaker 1: out and picked the morrell Would you ever say I
- 15:57Speaker 1: harvested some Morrell's, I'd say I reaped it. I've been
- 16:02Speaker 1: just we can reap some morrels. You pick morrel's, You
- 16:07Speaker 1: slaughter beef, you killed turkeys? Yeah, man, that's we should
- 16:12Speaker 1: have a shirt just like that that says that exact thing. Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You know, everybody got all high on different words for like,
- 16:18Speaker 1: a group of zebras is a what ynny that one?
- 16:21Speaker 1: I don't know? Oh damnit, crash. It's a crash of
- 16:25Speaker 1: zebras or something like that. It's a crash of rhinos
- 16:28Speaker 1: or something like that. It's a flamboyance of flamingos. Remember
- 16:32Speaker 1: that you can't crash of rhinos dazzlezzle that everybody got
- 16:37Speaker 1: all hip on that because someone came up with the thing,
- 16:39Speaker 1: showed it all, and then everybody got all into like
- 16:42Speaker 1: what words mean? What? A murder of crow of crows
- 16:44Speaker 1: is a big one that Yeah, you can it might
- 16:46Speaker 1: be a sweet shirt. It says pick next to it.
- 16:52Speaker 1: What do you call it? Corn harvest and the turkey kill?
- 16:54Speaker 1: What do you call a group of giraffes? I don't
- 16:57Speaker 1: know the tower. No there right, I just got back
- 17:02Speaker 1: from the Texas Hill Country. Yeah, Ben, you're gonna have
- 17:09Speaker 1: to suffice as it. I mean years spent in Texas,
- 17:11Speaker 1: like three or four, so you're a Texas expert. Yeah. Thanks.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm like the Wikipedia version of saying Texas
- 17:20Speaker 1: dudes are so sensitive they're gonna be particularly Yeah, they're
- 17:24Speaker 1: gonna be like listening to this pouring over it. Uh.
- 17:29Speaker 1: You were saying that we hunted on the Lano River,
- 17:33Speaker 1: which can be Lano for Yano. I prefer Yanna. I
- 17:39Speaker 1: prefer Yana. But I was corrected many times. Yeah, it
- 17:41Speaker 1: cannot be Yano. The Yano is in the Panhandle, I
- 17:45Speaker 1: was told, and I said, yeah, anyway, we're hunting near Burnett, Texas.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And he said it's Burnett. You can't even say that, right, Yeah, uh,
- 17:55Speaker 1: real quick. Yano Esticado, which is in Texas, yes, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: New Mexico. I believe Oklahoma is that because it's up
- 18:04Speaker 1: in the Panhandle. The Yanno esticado is an entirely in Texas.
- 18:08Speaker 1: It's a big landscape feature. It's a it's a it's
- 18:11Speaker 1: a vast plateau that falls away on very steep edges
- 18:14Speaker 1: around it. And once upon a time, the command she
- 18:18Speaker 1: used to go up and vanish on top of that
- 18:20Speaker 1: thing where it's very hard and hard to exist and
- 18:23Speaker 1: lack of water, and sometimes they would hide out in
- 18:25Speaker 1: the canyons where the Yanno Esticado breaks away. The Yanno
- 18:29Speaker 1: esticado means steaked planes. So the Yanno River. How in
- 18:37Speaker 1: the hell is the Lanto same same spelling, same spelling,
- 18:44Speaker 1: the same. And there's also the Lano Uplift, which is
- 18:50Speaker 1: a is a big granite dome that's in the hill
- 18:53Speaker 1: country that people always talk about is that the Yano Uplift.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Is that the thing we were looking at, that rock
- 18:58Speaker 1: is amazing And I don't know if that's a I
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't think that was right. Uh, But but we're in
- 19:04Speaker 1: full on Texas Hill country. Yeah, which is a term.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I've been here in my whole life, but I don't
- 19:08Speaker 1: know what it meant. Well, there's a lot of things
- 19:10Speaker 1: to me, A lot of things. It means to me,
- 19:12Speaker 1: Like you think of the granite and limestone, like those
- 19:14Speaker 1: big you know in the Lna River, those big cliff
- 19:17Speaker 1: faces in the hill country and the sandstone. It's out there, um,
- 19:21Speaker 1: but really it stretches. They say it's the border between
- 19:25Speaker 1: the southeast and the southwest, so it stretches almost all
- 19:28Speaker 1: the way over to the border of Mexico and up
- 19:31Speaker 1: into East Texas, which is a big deal. So it's
- 19:34Speaker 1: a there's a lot of varying terrain. But we were
- 19:36Speaker 1: in where I used to live and just south where
- 19:40Speaker 1: we were as the gateway to the hill country. Dripping Springs.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Dripping is one of the more pleasant town names. Yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 1: where and there was like I'll move there. There was
- 19:49Speaker 1: many dripping springs. It's only dripping. There's a lot of
- 19:54Speaker 1: natural springs. There's a natural spring on one of the
- 19:56Speaker 1: properties we were hunting on that Yanni and I got
- 19:59Speaker 1: to look at. Um. So we were in kind of
- 20:02Speaker 1: the beginning of the hill country with stretches across Texas,
- 20:05Speaker 1: which is very landscape. But I think of I think
- 20:08Speaker 1: of those limestone and sandstone cliffs and stuff that you
- 20:12Speaker 1: see when you're driving west. Why is the hill is
- 20:15Speaker 1: the hill country more known for high fences and axotics
- 20:21Speaker 1: running around than other parts of Texas? It just in
- 20:24Speaker 1: you're and you're like superficial understanding of Texas, my superficial understanding.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I've seen it more there than I've seen in other places.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Where we're hunting. We're hunting on a We hunted on
- 20:33Speaker 1: a farm, not a farm, a former ranch, recreation, a
- 20:36Speaker 1: recreational ranch turned recreational properties acres um not fenced, No,
- 20:46Speaker 1: not high fence. There's fences pretty much all other properties
- 20:49Speaker 1: that fenced all. And driving out of there, we ran
- 20:52Speaker 1: into two Zebras Dazzle there was that a Dazzle Mini
- 20:56Speaker 1: Dazzle Mini Dazzle too Zeebras to stand there, which is
- 20:59Speaker 1: like very disconcerting to see. And there's a lot of
- 21:04Speaker 1: that the bad way. We're just like, wow, there's a
- 21:06Speaker 1: lot of the first time I was, the first I
- 21:08Speaker 1: think week that I was in Texas, we were driving
- 21:10Speaker 1: through the hill country to go hike at some state park.
- 21:14Speaker 1: And which is what you gotta hike on. I don't
- 21:17Speaker 1: there because there's not a public ground to do it.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So we're driving out. We're driving down this high with
- 21:21Speaker 1: a buddy and I look over and there's a bongo
- 21:24Speaker 1: like standing on the side of the road, just not
- 21:26Speaker 1: behind a fence, just standing on the the side the road
- 21:28Speaker 1: eating grass. And he goes, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, they're around.
- 21:32Speaker 1: What do you mean they're around. That's an East African
- 21:34Speaker 1: jungle antelope. It's not what are you talking about saying, oh, yeah, yeah,
- 21:38Speaker 1: you see those around. They must have got out of
- 21:40Speaker 1: the high fence. And that is always what you here
- 21:43Speaker 1: down there. Oh yeah, there's a z brotherre's an elk.
- 21:45Speaker 1: There's a We had a red deer run across the road.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I mean I typically hunted by driving them out of
- 21:54Speaker 1: the jungle into less dance jungle with buses guided by pygmies.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And you're running dogs through the jungle and uh, you
- 22:04Speaker 1: flush them into like zones of like twenty yard openings. Yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 1: it's a big critter. That's like the second largest n
- 22:11Speaker 1: African antelope I think behind the eland. It's a big critter.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It's not a small I mean, it's like kind of
- 22:17Speaker 1: a bronzy orange color. So it's not something you see
- 22:20Speaker 1: in this continent or this at least in the in
- 22:24Speaker 1: the in the state. Yeah, it's it's we have coming up.
- 22:28Speaker 1: We're doing an episode with the head of Texas Parks.
- 22:30Speaker 1: It's Parks and Wildlife. Yes, Texas Parks and Wildlife. And
- 22:35Speaker 1: I have a million questions for him. If you have
- 22:37Speaker 1: a question, if there's other Northerners, other Yankees out there. Oh,
- 22:41Speaker 1: I want to return to the word butch for a minute. Um,
- 22:45Speaker 1: there's other Yankees out there who have questions, Like we're
- 22:49Speaker 1: just like, how could that possibly be? If you have
- 22:52Speaker 1: a question for a Texan, you can email in and
- 22:54Speaker 1: we'll we'll we'll collate the questions and then we can
- 22:57Speaker 1: go ask the Texas Parks and Wildlife guy. My question
- 22:59Speaker 1: is going to be, is it legal? Are you really
- 23:03Speaker 1: allowed to just take any animal from anywhere and cut
- 23:08Speaker 1: it loose on your property. I feel like the answer
- 23:12Speaker 1: is yes from all my experience answers. Yes. I would
- 23:15Speaker 1: be interested to hear his take on it, Like if
- 23:17Speaker 1: someone gave you a jaguar, mm hmm, could you be
- 23:21Speaker 1: like I'm turning to the jaguar out on my property.
- 23:26Speaker 1: They can't has to be regular. There's there's a regulations,
- 23:29Speaker 1: but there's not for a zebra. So how right I'm
- 23:33Speaker 1: dying to know? I mean, I can I can tell you.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Like when we were talking about where we were in
- 23:37Speaker 1: the Hill country in Atlanto or Yana or Lano, whatever
- 23:40Speaker 1: you please, We'll go Lana. Like the guys that the
- 23:44Speaker 1: ranch we were hunting on, we're saying that that's used
- 23:46Speaker 1: to be like South Texas, big tracks of land, big
- 23:49Speaker 1: tracks are ranches like you know, Uh, it's pretty common
- 23:54Speaker 1: in that area, the hill country where's kind of outside
- 23:57Speaker 1: of Austin. There's they basically taking these large ranches and
- 24:02Speaker 1: parceled them up and sold them through history. I don't
- 24:05Speaker 1: know the history of all that. But now you have
- 24:07Speaker 1: a thousand, two thousand, five hundred six hundred acre properties
- 24:11Speaker 1: and with a wholly different land use ideas on each one.
- 24:14Speaker 1: And so when we were down there, you see offense, offense, offense, offense,
- 24:19Speaker 1: another fence, another fence, because there's there is no twenty
- 24:22Speaker 1: thousand acre untouched habitat down there like I've seen in
- 24:25Speaker 1: South Texas. So it's challenging. You'll see, I mean, we
- 24:28Speaker 1: saw black buck we saw red deer. We saw high
- 24:33Speaker 1: fence and then five strand very unwildlife friendly fencing. Yeah tough,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but yeah yeah. Do you mean that the regular fence,
- 24:43Speaker 1: not the high fence, but just the raider cattle fence. Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 1: We found a picture, not found a picture. Ran into
- 24:49Speaker 1: a deer that had gone to jump, had had gone
- 24:54Speaker 1: to jump offence. This is like you see this often
- 24:57Speaker 1: and like pictures like just picture of bar ware has
- 25:00Speaker 1: has got a bunch of strands on it and it
- 25:02Speaker 1: got its leg between So it shot a leg in
- 25:05Speaker 1: between the two top strands and enrolled the wire. My
- 25:12Speaker 1: saying it in the way, it's clear rolled the wire.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So then the wire began to braid, not braid, to
- 25:17Speaker 1: twist and caught the deer's hoof there just on its ankle,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and it looked like it'd been there quite a while
- 25:25Speaker 1: for it expired. It was dead hanging there and I, uh,
- 25:31Speaker 1: you can go look at the picture. I put it
- 25:32Speaker 1: on Instagram. Um just like at Stephen Ronelle. If you
- 25:36Speaker 1: scroll back you'll find his deer I'm talking about. And
- 25:39Speaker 1: the common threads kind of interesting to see, like people's
- 25:42Speaker 1: perceptions of what they're looking at because the I didn't
- 25:45Speaker 1: want to just put it up in some kind of
- 25:46Speaker 1: sensationalist way. The image. Uh So, I explained in the air,
- 25:52Speaker 1: like man, you know, white tails thrive around people. We
- 25:56Speaker 1: plant crops, agricultural crops that they like to eat. We
- 26:00Speaker 1: plant edible landscape and they like to eat. We create
- 26:03Speaker 1: endless amounts of edge habitats where they thrive. We displaced
- 26:07Speaker 1: their predators. But it's like a double edged sword because
- 26:11Speaker 1: the number one white the number one white tailed death,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I think is getting hit by a car for human caused, right,
- 26:19Speaker 1: not even hunting. I think people hit more with cars
- 26:21Speaker 1: than hunters kill. That might be right, that might be
- 26:23Speaker 1: wrong certain states, it's I've heard. I'm pretty sure this
- 26:29Speaker 1: is true. I've heard that that's how kind of high
- 26:32Speaker 1: fences came to be in Texas. That the idea was
- 26:36Speaker 1: these large ranges with lots and lots of white tailed deer,
- 26:38Speaker 1: put a fence up. You don't have to worry about
- 26:39Speaker 1: hit him with your truck. We're you know, really yeah.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And then I think later they discovered the fringe benefits
- 26:45Speaker 1: of it, being breeding and controlling genetics and things of
- 26:48Speaker 1: that nature. I think it originally started obviously to keep
- 26:50Speaker 1: people out of your property. But as far as wildlife
- 26:53Speaker 1: is concerned, highway uh. And I've heard two of people
- 26:58Speaker 1: only fencing one side. I've been on two properties that
- 27:01Speaker 1: have done this, fence one border of their property. If
- 27:04Speaker 1: they if they're doing like deer management, and you have
- 27:08Speaker 1: neighbors that are just just like you know, I'm not
- 27:12Speaker 1: saying it's in a negative way. You have neighbors just
- 27:13Speaker 1: like shoot box. Yep. Maybe they eat a lot of
- 27:16Speaker 1: deer and they shoot, you know, they go out and
- 27:18Speaker 1: don't care and they just shoot whatever buck they run into,
- 27:20Speaker 1: which is totally fine. But I've been on two Texas
- 27:22Speaker 1: properties where they ranch a border, a single border, so
- 27:27Speaker 1: they're not captive, They're not holding their dear captive. They
- 27:30Speaker 1: just don't want to be having their big box so
- 27:33Speaker 1: easily move on to a property of mugs that just
- 27:36Speaker 1: shoot box. Yeah, it's still possible, but it's a deterrent. Yeah,
- 27:41Speaker 1: it deters them from getting over. And in both of
- 27:44Speaker 1: these places that I was on that did this, they
- 27:46Speaker 1: mentioned how these guys would set their blinds. They knew
- 27:49Speaker 1: that this place was producing nice bucks, and they would
- 27:52Speaker 1: set blinds and basically hunt the edge, which irritated the guys.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Another guy, that happens everywhere that copensive border. Know where
- 28:04Speaker 1: you set your blind on the neighbor's property is it's
- 28:07Speaker 1: just like a human tendency. It doesn't matter if your
- 28:10Speaker 1: places ten acres or ten thousand, you're gonna hunt the
- 28:13Speaker 1: freaking border because it's obviously better hunting on the other
- 28:18Speaker 1: We had a guy right in recently proposed it it
- 28:20Speaker 1: should be illegal. He thinks that he's noticed in his
- 28:24Speaker 1: area that people will put corn feeders. Like, I can't
- 28:29Speaker 1: remeber what state is that. He's in the state where
- 28:30Speaker 1: it's illegal debate on public, but you can bate on private.
- 28:35Speaker 1: And you noticed how the private guys always set corn
- 28:37Speaker 1: feeders right on the edge of the public. And he
- 28:41Speaker 1: was saying it should be illegal to do this, which
- 28:45Speaker 1: I understand his frustration perhaps, but that's like some crazy lawmaking. Yeah,
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's not gonna go over real. Well, you proposed that
- 28:54Speaker 1: in order to make it easier on this dude. He
- 28:58Speaker 1: doesn't like that they're drawing off the blue. Yeah. And
- 29:01Speaker 1: if that, I mean they find corn, they find high
- 29:05Speaker 1: calorie food. So if it's a hundred yards inside the
- 29:08Speaker 1: private or two yards inside the private, odds are that
- 29:13Speaker 1: deer is gonna find it just as easily as if
- 29:16Speaker 1: it was ten yards inside the private Yeah. Yeah. Um.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I never finished my thing about the fence is uh
- 29:27Speaker 1: the comments, So I put the picture up in the
- 29:30Speaker 1: comments the deer hung up fence. Yeah. So there's a
- 29:33Speaker 1: deer that diet on a fence. And I said this
- 29:35Speaker 1: double edged sword, right, because we like create, We kind
- 29:37Speaker 1: of like created the white tailed deer. The white tailed
- 29:39Speaker 1: deers in some ways, not in every area like you
- 29:41Speaker 1: get up in like main big woods, and but in
- 29:43Speaker 1: some ways, like the white tail deer has become like
- 29:45Speaker 1: a kind of synthetic animal, yeah, because it does so
- 29:48Speaker 1: well around people, uh, much to its credit. Right crows,
- 29:51Speaker 1: Canada geese. We talked about this a bunch of times, um,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and I suppose double edged sword because then you know,
- 29:55Speaker 1: like this deers hung up in this fence. That's all
- 29:57Speaker 1: the point I was trying to make. But you look
- 29:58Speaker 1: at the comments. A lot of the comments they're cool,
- 30:00Speaker 1: A lot of the comments like that's nature's way of
- 30:02Speaker 1: sorting out the week, which struck me as really funny. Um,
- 30:07Speaker 1: But a lot of comments in there about animal friendly fencing. Yeah,
- 30:11Speaker 1: and feeling at that fence. We was a not animal
- 30:15Speaker 1: friendly fence that I would totally agree and no agenda here,
- 30:22Speaker 1: but yeah, there's a animal friendly fencing and all you
- 30:26Speaker 1: gotta do is look it up. UM. And now a
- 30:29Speaker 1: lot of state agencies they have UM basically UM you know,
- 30:34Speaker 1: state employees that are their sole job is to work
- 30:39Speaker 1: with private landowners and and help them, if they have
- 30:45Speaker 1: interest to do so, UM manage for wildlife. UM. And
- 30:50Speaker 1: one of the ways to do that is to UM
- 30:53Speaker 1: use animal friendly fencing, which I think is if you
- 30:57Speaker 1: have a four strand fence, the top strand onund as
- 31:00Speaker 1: smooth wire, UM, and it dictates like the the top
- 31:05Speaker 1: strand and bottom strand or smooth wire and I'm screwing
- 31:08Speaker 1: this up, but um and then they're spacing between the
- 31:12Speaker 1: wire two and then every so often you would have
- 31:15Speaker 1: like one that's missing a top strand or something like that. Yeah. Uh,
- 31:21Speaker 1: you know, analope can jump. Like the minute you say
- 31:25Speaker 1: they don't like to jump fences, like we're we're antelope
- 31:27Speaker 1: or from the habitat to live in, It's like jumping
- 31:29Speaker 1: wasn't necessary. They didn't need to jump stuff because they
- 31:33Speaker 1: live out in flat, open country in a hundred years.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I bet evolution will make we'll haven't jump anilop to
- 31:39Speaker 1: jump fences all the time. I think that there's probably
- 31:42Speaker 1: in the select there's definitely a selective advantage. There are
- 31:44Speaker 1: antalope that will jump a fence, and those antelope are
- 31:47Speaker 1: probably much more likely to live long and have lots
- 31:49Speaker 1: of babies. I've reaped and harvested a few antelope bucks
- 31:54Speaker 1: as they danced back and forth on a fence trying
- 31:58Speaker 1: to make up their mind on what to do with it.
- 32:00Speaker 1: We've gotten them. We've gotten them before by hunting them
- 32:03Speaker 1: and good crossing areas. Yea. Yeah, so they don't like
- 32:07Speaker 1: to jump, they will jump, and you'll people send him
- 32:09Speaker 1: when you say that antelope don't jump, you'll get three
- 32:11Speaker 1: videos of antelope jumping fences. So they will, but typically
- 32:13Speaker 1: they don't like to jump. Now, they don't like to
- 32:15Speaker 1: they don't know how they like to go under fences.
- 32:17Speaker 1: So I know that people that are trying to do
- 32:20Speaker 1: while they're friendly fencing in some areas, it's raising the
- 32:23Speaker 1: bottom wire to make room for antelope to go under.
- 32:26Speaker 1: I know in some areas with sage grouse which collide
- 32:30Speaker 1: with fences, there's like a lowering of the wire to
- 32:35Speaker 1: to a certain high because they tend to cruise out
- 32:37Speaker 1: a height where they often collide with the high wire
- 32:39Speaker 1: on a barbed wire fence. And then some guys were
- 32:42Speaker 1: mentioning other uses of paneling and things. Yeah, and you
- 32:47Speaker 1: can put some visual aids on barbed wire as well,
- 32:52Speaker 1: like little pin wheels and stuff. That's what they do
- 32:54Speaker 1: for sage grouse. I think that's what it was. Every couple,
- 32:57Speaker 1: between every couple of posts, you put these reflectors so
- 33:00Speaker 1: they read just through the presence of the wire. I
- 33:03Speaker 1: wonder if there still I don't know this, but did
- 33:05Speaker 1: you wonder there's something with all the pigs we saw
- 33:07Speaker 1: in this place with with that kind of fencing wildlife
- 33:12Speaker 1: safe fencing and pigs. Yeah, well, I I don't know,
- 33:14Speaker 1: because I've been in years past. I've been to places
- 33:18Speaker 1: that have um an old high fence situation and they're like,
- 33:26Speaker 1: you can't even count pigs as high fence pigs or
- 33:29Speaker 1: free range pigs because that high fence means nothing to them,
- 33:32Speaker 1: like they'll go under it somehow, some way, which I
- 33:37Speaker 1: don't I don't know. That was what was interesting about
- 33:38Speaker 1: a lot of the fence that we saw in Texas.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Was it wasn't just a four or five strand barbed
- 33:42Speaker 1: wire that was it was like the normal four or
- 33:44Speaker 1: five strand, and then underneath that there was a you know,
- 33:48Speaker 1: just gaped by three or four inches, there was another
- 33:51Speaker 1: three or four strands where a pig I mean a
- 33:54Speaker 1: pig let could get through, but you know, anything over
- 33:57Speaker 1: forty pounds probably couldn't get through that ar have to
- 34:00Speaker 1: hop through the next gap up. Do you remember hunting
- 34:03Speaker 1: that crazy place in Florida? What they did? Did they
- 34:08Speaker 1: bury fence or what they do? They had it's a
- 34:11Speaker 1: cattle ranch, working cattle ranch, right, yea, And they had
- 34:17Speaker 1: they boarded up to a nature wild bird sanctuary. And
- 34:23Speaker 1: the wild bird sanctuary does some hog control work, but
- 34:26Speaker 1: not nearly enough, I gather according to some surrounding landowners.
- 34:30Speaker 1: So this guy had hogproof fencing between his cattle ranch
- 34:37Speaker 1: and the bird the wild bird sanctuary, the wild bird sanctuary.
- 34:41Speaker 1: It is funny because you're like out in the cattle
- 34:42Speaker 1: ranches like open so it like like what do they
- 34:44Speaker 1: call it hammocks? Hammocks like savannah. Well, the hammocks are
- 34:47Speaker 1: just what they call a chunk of palm trees. Yeah,
- 34:50Speaker 1: but the rest is like savannah like grasslands. And then
- 34:53Speaker 1: you will come up and look like you'd walked into
- 34:55Speaker 1: Guatemala when you hit that fence. Freaking jungle in the
- 35:00Speaker 1: birst sanctuary because they weren't running cattle on it the
- 35:03Speaker 1: constant over the years grazing. So he had hard proof fencing.
- 35:07Speaker 1: But what he would do is he went and built
- 35:09Speaker 1: in all these little dogie doors in the hogproof fencing.
- 35:17Speaker 1: What yes, propped open with a stick. And he's got
- 35:23Speaker 1: hogg doug, he's got hog chasing dogs. So one night
- 35:26Speaker 1: he cut we're a turkey hunting and we get to
- 35:28Speaker 1: shooting the ship and he's like, if you boys want
- 35:32Speaker 1: to go out hunting hogs a night, come along, and
- 35:38Speaker 1: we agree to do this. The first step on his
- 35:41Speaker 1: hog hunt, before you start hunting hogs, he goes down
- 35:44Speaker 1: that fence and closes all the doggy doors. Step one,
- 35:51Speaker 1: close all the doggy doors. Step two, start hunting. Yes,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and guess where you catch pigs at the dog door?
- 36:00Speaker 1: Is the dog you doors? And these guys do you're here?
- 36:06Speaker 1: Everything called Bard like v Bard? No, not Shakespeare. Uh
- 36:12Speaker 1: is somebody using the right word borrowed? I think it
- 36:15Speaker 1: was just bar bar hog. Yeah, we caught two hogs
- 36:21Speaker 1: that night. One is, we recaught a hog that they
- 36:26Speaker 1: had caught previously. And when they catch a board, they
- 36:29Speaker 1: castrated because it does two things. One stops him from
- 36:35Speaker 1: reproducing and make it more pigs. Two, as he put
- 36:38Speaker 1: it to us, it takes his mind off ass and
- 36:41Speaker 1: puts it on grass and they get fat. But it
- 36:45Speaker 1: also limits the testosterone flow. Right, it makes it makes
- 36:50Speaker 1: the taste better from fast times at Ridgemont didn't say that,
- 36:54Speaker 1: he made it up. He didn't say that. Anyways, we
- 36:59Speaker 1: caught two picks. One was castrated. Oh you know what,
- 37:03Speaker 1: Remember how this morning I was telling you about making
- 37:05Speaker 1: my own sausage casings. That was from that pig. Oh
- 37:09Speaker 1: so you was from the one we caught that had
- 37:11Speaker 1: been either by them or other hog hunters had been
- 37:15Speaker 1: caught before and cast right, we called another pig that
- 37:20Speaker 1: was intact a boar. That pig they castrated and turned
- 37:28Speaker 1: back out again. Yeah, this is I've done this a
- 37:32Speaker 1: couple of times. Ridley's rode along like you guys did,
- 37:35Speaker 1: and it is it is gnarly. So you're you're catching
- 37:39Speaker 1: them with dogs. I'm going there and grabbing them by
- 37:41Speaker 1: the hind legs in the not cast rated hog. Um,
- 37:48Speaker 1: the not cast rated hog gouged a dog pretty good,
- 37:53Speaker 1: And I can't do you remember the Do you remember
- 37:58Speaker 1: the my observation about does the vet think about you
- 38:01Speaker 1: bringing in dogs all the time that are hard up?
- 38:04Speaker 1: Was that? Was that a lion hunter that said that
- 38:07Speaker 1: line to us that I like so much? Or was
- 38:09Speaker 1: that a hog hunter that said that line to us
- 38:11Speaker 1: that like so much? You were talking with it with
- 38:13Speaker 1: that dude is we were riding on top of his
- 38:15Speaker 1: giant swam buggy, all right. I said to him, what's
- 38:18Speaker 1: your vet think about you bringing in dogs all the
- 38:20Speaker 1: time that are gouaged up from wild pigs, which one
- 38:25Speaker 1: could argue is avoidable. And he's then said, that's why
- 38:28Speaker 1: you got to find a vet who likes the hogs.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Give you a discount. Here's a good question for you.
- 38:36Speaker 1: You go in there and you grab a critter by
- 38:37Speaker 1: the hind legs? Is that a harvest or a kill?
- 38:42Speaker 1: Are you killing the big? Are you harvesting the pig?
- 38:44Speaker 1: You're harvesting? It's nuts. Haven't haven't seen that occur? I
- 38:49Speaker 1: would not put I would not take a word, and
- 38:51Speaker 1: I've seen it occur in a lot of places. I
- 38:54Speaker 1: would not apply such a delicate word as harvest to
- 38:58Speaker 1: what happens when you catch a pig with dosh. Yeah,
- 39:01Speaker 1: it is the most it's like, it's probably the most
- 39:04Speaker 1: chaotic scene you can imagine. It's kill with a capital k.
- 39:08Speaker 1: It is. I almost got chased up, chased up a
- 39:12Speaker 1: tree by a big old hog that just had his
- 39:15Speaker 1: nuts removed postcastration. My mom got chased up a tree
- 39:19Speaker 1: by wild pig with my dad. Yeah, I got chased.
- 39:22Speaker 1: He wasn't really didn't chase me up the tree, but
- 39:24Speaker 1: I felt the need to get up the tree. The
- 39:25Speaker 1: way he was looking at me, and he was coming
- 39:27Speaker 1: towards me, like, yeah, you better get up that tree.
- 39:29Speaker 1: We're gonna we're gonna tussle. Son took his mind off
- 39:32Speaker 1: ass and put it up Betty's Steve. Where would because
- 39:37Speaker 1: your folks were in Michigan, right, Yeah, they were northern tier,
- 39:40Speaker 1: But so did they? Did your dad travel and hunt?
- 39:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah? Really? Yeah, he would go down south to hunt.
- 39:47Speaker 1: They'd go down there with their recurves and hunt pigs. Oh,
- 39:49Speaker 1: no way, he would travel. He'd go up in Canada
- 39:52Speaker 1: and they'd catch suckers. They'd hand grab sockers and phil
- 39:55Speaker 1: sacks full of sockers and hang the suckers on the
- 39:58Speaker 1: edge of creeks. Fresh bags of fresh suckers and gunny
- 40:02Speaker 1: sacks hang along creeks, and they'd hunt bears like bears. Yeah,
- 40:05Speaker 1: he taught about the first bear he ever got. He
- 40:07Speaker 1: thought he was sitting so close to his soccer sack.
- 40:10Speaker 1: He said, when that bear reached his arm up to
- 40:12Speaker 1: rip our part the soccer sackles in the spring, he
- 40:14Speaker 1: said he could see his ribs spread apart, and he
- 40:16Speaker 1: was five yards away, and he said he could he
- 40:17Speaker 1: could put his arrow right between the spread out ribs.
- 40:21Speaker 1: He'd like to tell that story, might be he got lucky.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Does your mom like tell the pig story? No, she
- 40:28Speaker 1: doesn't shy away from it. Not a fond memory. Though.
- 40:30Speaker 1: She had gone off to get his arrow, his arrows,
- 40:35Speaker 1: because they were they had a pig that they wound
- 40:37Speaker 1: and were chasing around. He ran out of arrows, and
- 40:39Speaker 1: she went to get an arrow. He sent her to
- 40:41Speaker 1: get it, fetch his arrows that he shot, and she
- 40:44Speaker 1: got an arrow, and then a pig got onto her,
- 40:46Speaker 1: and she climbed up in a tree and had to
- 40:49Speaker 1: throw my dad an arrow to shoot the pig. Man. Yeah,
- 40:53Speaker 1: but she wasn't a big hunter or anything, you know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: but she had somehow gotten your wife do that for you.
- 40:57Speaker 1: My wife would not do that for me. Well, I
- 41:00Speaker 1: think if you're up in the tree with the arrow
- 41:01Speaker 1: and it was a pig, she would never be near
- 41:03Speaker 1: the tree. Quick fence anecdote. It happened this weekend and
- 41:08Speaker 1: it was a good learning lesson. Andrew Whitney and I
- 41:11Speaker 1: had just parked and getting ready to hop a fence
- 41:13Speaker 1: going to some private we had access to and go
- 41:15Speaker 1: hunting and landings right across the street and we're just like,
- 41:19Speaker 1: you know, saying, hey, what's up. You know what's going on?
- 41:23Speaker 1: He says, you know, there's a gate, you know, down
- 41:25Speaker 1: at both corners. He doesn't drive down to the gate
- 41:28Speaker 1: and uh, and he's like, hey, it's cool. We can
- 41:31Speaker 1: just you know, your fence is so tightly strong, we
- 41:33Speaker 1: can just hop the fence and use it like a ladder.
- 41:35Speaker 1: No big deal, like kind of saying thank you for
- 41:37Speaker 1: offering the gate, but you know, we're young and able
- 41:40Speaker 1: and what it is hot the fence and guys like
- 41:43Speaker 1: and then it just clicked right at that moment, I'm like,
- 41:46Speaker 1: I'm like, sir, would you prefer that we used the gate?
- 41:49Speaker 1: And he's like, yeah, that's like a brand new fence.
- 41:52Speaker 1: It's nice and tight, and I don't want you guys
- 41:54Speaker 1: to stretch it out. So I wonder about that. Yeah,
- 41:58Speaker 1: it was. It was very you know, I didn't had
- 42:00Speaker 1: never put those two things together that like, you're hopping
- 42:03Speaker 1: fences all the time and you're just eventually stretching them out.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I'm sure a couple hundreds aren't really going to do
- 42:08Speaker 1: that to a fence, but in the eyes of a landowner,
- 42:11Speaker 1: you know, it's a nice way to show us some respect.
- 42:13Speaker 1: So then the bottom strand was just like two ft
- 42:15Speaker 1: off the ground. So we're like, oh, well, what does
- 42:17Speaker 1: duck under? And of course he goes in his house
- 42:20Speaker 1: as we duck under the fence and he comes back
- 42:22Speaker 1: out and he was getting groceries or something that we're
- 42:24Speaker 1: both on the other side of the fence, and he
- 42:27Speaker 1: kind of looks sad us and he didn't say anything.
- 42:29Speaker 1: He just went back to doing his stuff. And I'm
- 42:31Speaker 1: sure he's like if you just got a new house,
- 42:35Speaker 1: You're like, guys, just a new house thing. And there's
- 42:38Speaker 1: footprints and there that's a story where you're like, yeah,
- 42:41Speaker 1: well you said have permission, we have mission on this
- 42:44Speaker 1: guy under his fence and he thought we climbed it
- 42:47Speaker 1: all right back. So what we're doing turkey hunting Lano
- 42:50Speaker 1: the Lano River during a super bloom in the Texas
- 42:54Speaker 1: hill country where holy ship the flowers, the primary our
- 43:00Speaker 1: being the blue bonnet looping, which people in Texas are
- 43:04Speaker 1: real proud of. It is a looping, right yeah, kind
- 43:08Speaker 1: of looks has a pedal, not not the flower pedal,
- 43:10Speaker 1: but has a leaf. The body of the plant reminds
- 43:14Speaker 1: me of Columbine. Yeah, very similar. It wasn't in bloom.
- 43:19Speaker 1: A fella could be excused for thinking he was looking
- 43:22Speaker 1: at Columbine. Um, you don't agree with that, your wife's
- 43:25Speaker 1: a botanist, or you do agree with that? Uh, hunting
- 43:30Speaker 1: Texas still country kind of the tail end what people
- 43:33Speaker 1: were describing as the tail end of the Turkey rutt.
- 43:37Speaker 1: People don't say turkey rutty, don't they tail end of
- 43:41Speaker 1: the turkey rut? And uh got out there and we
- 43:44Speaker 1: were guests before you get away from that. Do you agree?
- 43:47Speaker 1: Do you guys agree that that was the case or
- 43:50Speaker 1: is that just the assumption of a few of the
- 43:52Speaker 1: locals that you're hanging well. I from living there and
- 43:55Speaker 1: hunt it. I think in then in the zone of texts,
- 43:58Speaker 1: I want to say we're in the North zones, or
- 44:00Speaker 1: we were, the season had already been going for It's
- 44:02Speaker 1: just a week, not long at all. Maybe that's just
- 44:04Speaker 1: what they were saying. I was telling Yanni before he
- 44:06Speaker 1: went down there. I feel like in the South Zone
- 44:08Speaker 1: it's usually mid March. It starts at the perfect time,
- 44:12Speaker 1: like you get birds fired up. They're coming off the
- 44:15Speaker 1: roots fired up and they're not end up yet. Usually
- 44:17Speaker 1: when you get there, when you get up into the
- 44:20Speaker 1: Northern zone where we were, it's just a week or so,
- 44:23Speaker 1: ten days too late, so you start the opening day
- 44:26Speaker 1: is kind of when that. I feel opening days like
- 44:28Speaker 1: the back half of the Turkey rut. And so when
- 44:31Speaker 1: we get there a week after that we are, my
- 44:34Speaker 1: feeling is on the tail end of it. And that's
- 44:36Speaker 1: what I felt going down there. And the challenge would
- 44:38Speaker 1: be that we would have to pull. We would have
- 44:40Speaker 1: to either find Tom's that we're running solo, or get
- 44:44Speaker 1: real slick on the ones that weren't. I know, I know,
- 44:49Speaker 1: I said it, but it's like I feel like it's
- 44:52Speaker 1: just hard to understand. With turkeys, there is a beginning, right,
- 44:58Speaker 1: Turkey spend their winter in large winter flocks. Okay, if
- 45:02Speaker 1: you go out hunting. Just talking to Matt the other day,
- 45:04Speaker 1: some of his buddies are just out in a certain
- 45:06Speaker 1: area and my brother was telling me how his bodies went.
- 45:09Speaker 1: They got some birds, but it was super tough because
- 45:11Speaker 1: the birds were still grouped up in groups of one
- 45:15Speaker 1: or more. So when I hear that, that's like, not,
- 45:20Speaker 1: that's not the rut, that's winter flock. You're on one
- 45:24Speaker 1: side of it. Yeah, So there's there's something that precedes
- 45:29Speaker 1: the beginning, and then you get into where later where
- 45:34Speaker 1: you have groups of males very casually hanging out, not fighting,
- 45:40Speaker 1: not pursuing females. The females have poulse the run around
- 45:45Speaker 1: with their pulse, and there's like the end within that.
- 45:50Speaker 1: I don't think it's like this real. I don't know
- 45:53Speaker 1: that everyone's on the same schedule and it's this real timeline.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I think it's kind of this. It's it's white tails
- 45:59Speaker 1: are similar. I mean, you could be in a place
- 46:01Speaker 1: where you're not seeing a whole lot of action and
- 46:03Speaker 1: then you turn around there's a buck chasing a dough.
- 46:05Speaker 1: You know that it's similar with turkeys in my mind
- 46:08Speaker 1: that you can run into you be hunting on all
- 46:10Speaker 1: week and run into one bird. That makes it seem easy.
- 46:14Speaker 1: However you run into them, or on Monday it's unbelievable.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Then Tuesday it's like nothing's happening. Wednesday it's unbelievable again. Uh,
- 46:23Speaker 1: we show up this spot. We were the guy. We
- 46:24Speaker 1: were down there because the guy's Uh. We worked closely
- 46:27Speaker 1: with Eddie and the guy and Ben used to work
- 46:30Speaker 1: real close with Eddie. Ye Um. We were guests to
- 46:33Speaker 1: go hunting down on the hunting down there with those guys.
- 46:35Speaker 1: And the thing that happens to me turkey hunting all
- 46:37Speaker 1: the time in new spots, and I cannot stand it
- 46:39Speaker 1: is when you get to a spot you never hunted before,
- 46:43Speaker 1: and it's dark, so you arrive in the dark, and
- 46:47Speaker 1: you go out in the dark in the morning and
- 46:50Speaker 1: you're hearing a bird gobble, but you've never seen the
- 46:53Speaker 1: place and you have no idea what anything looks like.
- 46:59Speaker 1: I can't tell if I'd like that or hate it.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I kind of hate that, you know, I kind of
- 47:05Speaker 1: the turkeys is not bad just because they're on the
- 47:07Speaker 1: roof and the first morning me and Cower stand there
- 47:09Speaker 1: like they were hammering on the roost down by where
- 47:12Speaker 1: you guys arey the river at least or between the
- 47:14Speaker 1: two where our zones were. It's cool to just be
- 47:17Speaker 1: in a place where like I don't know where that is,
- 47:20Speaker 1: but I know there's a turkey over there, because you
- 47:22Speaker 1: don't get that. You get that with elk in other place,
- 47:24Speaker 1: but you don't get that white tails or anything else
- 47:26Speaker 1: in Texas. That's for sure. You can't stand there and
- 47:28Speaker 1: be like, turkey's over there, I don't know where that is,
- 47:32Speaker 1: just walking in the dog because it's novel because the
- 47:34Speaker 1: next morning, it's not gonna be like that. The next morning,
- 47:38Speaker 1: like you know that one spot, which is why ranch
- 47:42Speaker 1: every other year, you know, because I like going to
- 47:45Speaker 1: see some new country. Yeah, but sitting there in the
- 47:47Speaker 1: dark and there's a bird hammering, and you're like, like,
- 47:50Speaker 1: if you go to the spot, you know, well, like
- 47:52Speaker 1: Doug Dug can sit on his front porch, your bird
- 47:55Speaker 1: gob will probably tell you what tree it's in, you know,
- 47:59Speaker 1: just familiarity, or if you're in the woods and you
- 48:02Speaker 1: hear a turkey gobbling on the ground when you know
- 48:04Speaker 1: in the area real well, he's like, I know what
- 48:06Speaker 1: he's doing. I bet he's And they know that little lane.
- 48:09Speaker 1: How does like the wide spot and they like the
- 48:11Speaker 1: strutting air. He's probably there, so we should sneak around.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Right when you're in a new spot, you hear it
- 48:17Speaker 1: and you don't know what you don't You don't know
- 48:20Speaker 1: like how you should move over, what you should do,
- 48:22Speaker 1: and how you should get over there. And the sun
- 48:24Speaker 1: comes up and there's like a big down dead tree
- 48:27Speaker 1: right there where you're like, no bird in the history
- 48:29Speaker 1: of turkeys would ever jump over the top of that call.
- 48:32Speaker 1: I end up doing that with a set of railroad tracks.
- 48:34Speaker 1: We didn't know the railroad tracks there. But you end
- 48:36Speaker 1: up and hunts like this where you don't know what
- 48:38Speaker 1: you're doing. Really, you just kind of have the landscape
- 48:40Speaker 1: in front of you're just kind of poking and prodding
- 48:42Speaker 1: at it. You know, when you know the landscape, you
- 48:44Speaker 1: just charge over it gets to a spot where you
- 48:46Speaker 1: need to be done. I spent two mornings listening to
- 48:49Speaker 1: turkeys gobble that I only later realized weren't even on
- 48:53Speaker 1: the property. We are on yeah, cal and I yeah,
- 48:56Speaker 1: And I crawled up five birds and hit him and
- 48:59Speaker 1: they were just strutting on another side. Offense. We had
- 49:02Speaker 1: to then check oh onyx maps, that is not where
- 49:06Speaker 1: are we cannot the It takes a lot of mental
- 49:09Speaker 1: capacity too, because like we're like, okay, there's the birds,
- 49:14Speaker 1: get set up. Here we go and I was like,
- 49:16Speaker 1: wait a minute, if only they would come over this
- 49:19Speaker 1: eighteen strand fence strong with dead deer. Uh So yeah,
- 49:24Speaker 1: that first one we set up. We went out and
- 49:26Speaker 1: set up. It was funny because this is the first
- 49:28Speaker 1: guy's ever had to me. We were with a photographer,
- 49:31Speaker 1: nice kid, nice guy, and we old texts. I hesitate
- 49:36Speaker 1: to even say this. We set up in a spot.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Texas have a great affinity for the blue bonnet flower.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Apparently it's like a rite of passage that when you
- 49:48Speaker 1: have a kid, you take the kid out in the
- 49:50Speaker 1: spring and have him dance around. This is the Texas thing.
- 49:54Speaker 1: You take your kid out in spring and make him
- 49:56Speaker 1: like dance around in the blue bonnets, are laying them
- 49:58Speaker 1: all cute and take pictures of him. They love the
- 50:00Speaker 1: damn flowers. So did they do that for you? We
- 50:03Speaker 1: photographer hesitate to say this, I has sit say this
- 50:06Speaker 1: is deeply embarrassing. It doesn't this. I'm just gonna tell
- 50:11Speaker 1: it though, picking up because this is a safe space.
- 50:14Speaker 1: We set up in a spot because of the presence
- 50:21Speaker 1: of blue blonet blue bonnet flowers. That's embarrassing. That was
- 50:27Speaker 1: the site selection for our setup to try to call birds. Also,
- 50:34Speaker 1: a ship load of gobblers nearby wasn't a bad spot,
- 50:39Speaker 1: but I would I feel like it's necessary for me
- 50:41Speaker 1: to say that. The photographer was like, since there's a
- 50:47Speaker 1: number of spots that one could set up, I think
- 50:50Speaker 1: it would be really cool if we could set up
- 50:52Speaker 1: with all these blue bonnets, because imagine to get a
- 50:56Speaker 1: big gobbler, to get photos of a big gobbler like
- 51:00Speaker 1: a small cute child strolling through the blue bonnets. As
- 51:04Speaker 1: long as you didn't have to be the small cute
- 51:07Speaker 1: child in the scenario, that's that's fine, And that is
- 51:09Speaker 1: how we set up. And I think that it was cosmic.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It was cosmic retribution that we did not call a
- 51:17Speaker 1: rooster in off the tree the goblin. I think that
- 51:20Speaker 1: the lord, not a rooster goblin roosted the Lord of
- 51:28Speaker 1: the hunt, the Goddess of the hunt, Diana's her name,
- 51:33Speaker 1: The goddess of the hunt said, I will punt. I
- 51:36Speaker 1: will not punish these men for having the presence of
- 51:39Speaker 1: blue bonnet flowers. Uh inform or dictate to them where
- 51:44Speaker 1: they should set up to best kill this turkey, and
- 51:46Speaker 1: I will not let that turkey go in their direction.
- 51:50Speaker 1: And they didn't, and we then hunted around. It was
- 51:54Speaker 1: like like every I feel like every time you like,
- 51:57Speaker 1: I need to start writing down what happens when people
- 51:59Speaker 1: turkey hunt, because you somehow carry with in your head,
- 52:03Speaker 1: you carry the best days of turkey hunting in your
- 52:06Speaker 1: head as normal. And I need to make like a
- 52:09Speaker 1: sticker or something that I keep, or a little note
- 52:13Speaker 1: card that I keep my turkey best that says, like,
- 52:16Speaker 1: in the morning, before it gets light out, you will
- 52:19Speaker 1: hear many gobbles and then the next line will be
- 52:24Speaker 1: uh after when they get sunny out or the daylight comes,
- 52:29Speaker 1: the birds will will not gobble as much as normal.
- 52:36Speaker 1: And then this is normal. And then as the morning progresses, you,
- 52:41Speaker 1: if you're lucky, well here scattered gobbles, because that's like
- 52:45Speaker 1: how every but every time you're like, you're in the
- 52:48Speaker 1: it's dark, gotta go. And then they stopped gobby, like
- 52:53Speaker 1: what happened? They shut down? They hit the ground and
- 52:59Speaker 1: never made it the other peep, And I, like, I
- 53:01Speaker 1: I re suffer that realization every single time I go
- 53:05Speaker 1: turkey hunting, as though I'm experiencing something not like what happened.
- 53:10Speaker 1: They hit the ground and shut right up. How many
- 53:11Speaker 1: times have I said that in my life? That never happens.
- 53:14Speaker 1: It's like that is normal. So they hit the ground
- 53:18Speaker 1: and didn't gobble a lot, and I started entering, Oh,
- 53:20Speaker 1: it's post rut. It's like something weird happened. And then
- 53:26Speaker 1: you just start hunting and then it plays out like
- 53:31Speaker 1: how it plays out. And the other thing is that
- 53:34Speaker 1: the other turkey mistake. As we start hunting around me
- 53:36Speaker 1: encountered the Lano River. We're hunting on the Lano River,
- 53:40Speaker 1: and I guess a few years ago this was like
- 53:42Speaker 1: a very lush river bottom a lot of vegetation. But
- 53:46Speaker 1: they had this historic flood, like a hundred of your
- 53:48Speaker 1: flood or you know, people are just throwing around hunding
- 53:50Speaker 1: your flood, a ripping national news flood. And it not
- 53:55Speaker 1: only did it scour the river channel of vegetation, but
- 53:59Speaker 1: it depot posited like full on beach sand where this
- 54:04Speaker 1: thing looks like the Mojave Desert from bank to bank,
- 54:08Speaker 1: it looks like the most inhospitable turkey thing in the world.
- 54:13Speaker 1: And we start talking about turkeys like that live on
- 54:15Speaker 1: the like we're like, there's turkeys on the other side
- 54:18Speaker 1: of the river, as though they're in another realm, that
- 54:22Speaker 1: they exist in another dimension is our The river seems
- 54:27Speaker 1: so severe and wide and un turkey friendly, you know
- 54:30Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And so you start dividing the world
- 54:33Speaker 1: up and there's like the turkeys that live over here,
- 54:36Speaker 1: and there's the turkeys that live over there, and the
- 54:37Speaker 1: turkeys that live over there are we can hear those
- 54:40Speaker 1: turkeys and see them, but they're not are but they
- 54:43Speaker 1: weren't in our They weren't in our world. Yeah, Kalin,
- 54:46Speaker 1: I did not have that experience. You didn't feel that
- 54:48Speaker 1: well that I'm not being the Yeah, well, I'm not
- 54:50Speaker 1: being the reality. But that was my like perception of it,
- 54:52Speaker 1: to see turkeys over there and like, ha, you know,
- 54:56Speaker 1: grand it's too bad that they're over there and we're
- 54:59Speaker 1: over here, because what turkey his right mind would ever
- 55:01Speaker 1: walk across that. And we hunt around all morning and
- 55:04Speaker 1: have some here scattered gobbles and all of sudden. Look,
- 55:08Speaker 1: and here's two times that had in the middle of
- 55:11Speaker 1: the day flown across the river. And everybody knows turkeys
- 55:15Speaker 1: don't fly, they don't like to fly, and they don't
- 55:18Speaker 1: cross water. They don't fly across the rivers. They flew
- 55:20Speaker 1: across the river just for whatever, because we're over there,
- 55:23Speaker 1: I'd like to think of because we were calling near
- 55:25Speaker 1: the bank of the river, flew across the river and
- 55:29Speaker 1: then we're walking across the Mojave in such a way
- 55:33Speaker 1: that we had all the time in the world to
- 55:35Speaker 1: go set up, uh, to go set up where they
- 55:40Speaker 1: were gonna hit our bank, because this is the rivers,
- 55:44Speaker 1: the property line. The other thing messing with my head
- 55:47Speaker 1: is there's the dead deer hanging there. We're like right
- 55:50Speaker 1: by the dead deer and the impenetrable fence. And then
- 55:53Speaker 1: I got like, oh, sure they'd crossed the river, but
- 55:56Speaker 1: they'll definitely hang up. But did that fence half of
- 55:59Speaker 1: lower tight strands they had low? Yeah, you couldn't crawl
- 56:03Speaker 1: under this fence. Was that look that you were on
- 56:07Speaker 1: later the next day with Danielle Daniell, same fence? Yeah, Yeah,
- 56:12Speaker 1: that was that was had a low wire. You couldn't
- 56:14Speaker 1: get under it. You had to scour around for a
- 56:16Speaker 1: way to get to get to get under the fence.
- 56:18Speaker 1: And we always had to go over that fence. It
- 56:20Speaker 1: had a low wire. And then I mean it's in
- 56:22Speaker 1: my head that like, somehow the turkeys will not like
- 56:27Speaker 1: that fence. But we get set up as being the photographer,
- 56:31Speaker 1: We get set up to call, and I've already got
- 56:34Speaker 1: my gutt knife out because like two times no hands
- 56:39Speaker 1: coming across that thing. And like I said, I I
- 56:42Speaker 1: feel as though I'd like to think it was related
- 56:45Speaker 1: to the fact that we were working this little road
- 56:47Speaker 1: down there calling. I like to feel it's all They're like, oh,
- 56:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of action over there. We're gonna go
- 56:50Speaker 1: check it out. So we get set up and um,
- 56:54Speaker 1: I'm and and and I put out a decoy in
- 56:57Speaker 1: the road, not knowing the would ended right next to me,
- 57:02Speaker 1: because I'm thinking, as the turkey's coming, if they can
- 57:04Speaker 1: get over the fence, they'll look down the road and
- 57:06Speaker 1: see the dcoin and come down the road and guess,
- 57:09Speaker 1: like it all set up, I'm aim in that direction.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And then instead of the fence somehow stopping the turkeys.
- 57:14Speaker 1: The next time they gobbled there like already on the
- 57:16Speaker 1: other side of the fence, like they didn't even register
- 57:18Speaker 1: the presence of the fence, jumped it. I don't know
- 57:21Speaker 1: what they did. I didn't care about the river, didn't
- 57:24Speaker 1: care about the fence, didn't see the decoy, and they
- 57:27Speaker 1: wind up right next to us. Out of you. Uh, drumming, God,
- 57:34Speaker 1: I love that sound. Do you feel though, that those
- 57:38Speaker 1: birds were responding to you? They were just kind of
- 57:41Speaker 1: doing anything you could turn them. It was like throwing
- 57:43Speaker 1: a light switch. You just make them gobble. At this point,
- 57:45Speaker 1: they're hot and hot, but they were just like it's
- 57:49Speaker 1: like yep, yep, yep every time out of reach, the
- 57:54Speaker 1: out of sight when when you hear it's not really
- 57:58Speaker 1: true when you can hear them drumming, they're close. But
- 58:03Speaker 1: I just but like last weekend we heard some drumming.
- 58:05Speaker 1: It was not close. Really heard him drums from just
- 58:09Speaker 1: well out of shotgun range. Oh yeah, if you know
- 58:14Speaker 1: what to the sound is and what you're listening for,
- 58:18Speaker 1: you can hear him at sub a hundred. You always
- 58:20Speaker 1: need to say, I feel like I hear one drumming.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Are they just like expanding their diaphragms, like they're vibrating
- 58:27Speaker 1: the fathers and holding them tight. You ever, when you
- 58:30Speaker 1: kill a bird, uh, when you kill turkey, harvest him,
- 58:34Speaker 1: you ever knows how his feathers are all warned, his
- 58:36Speaker 1: primaries are worn down because they also like walk around
- 58:40Speaker 1: and like leave those little scratch marks. That's a great
- 58:43Speaker 1: way to tell if you're in a good area. Marks. Yeah,
- 58:48Speaker 1: But when he's drumming, he's just going. It's similar to
- 58:50Speaker 1: a rough growls and roads man liked so many times.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Probably just put that on your list of turkey reassurances.
- 59:02Speaker 1: It's like, you know, you may not want to leave
- 59:05Speaker 1: the road. Turkeys they can't help themselves. No, they'd like
- 59:09Speaker 1: to see what's going on around him. They'd like to
- 59:11Speaker 1: get out in the road. They're like the walk roads,
- 59:13Speaker 1: like the strutting roads. I mean, he's not gonna strutting
- 59:16Speaker 1: a briar patch. He likes to get out and display.
- 59:21Speaker 1: But he's drumming, Yanni, do your drum noise. See I
- 59:28Speaker 1: go like this just spitting a little back. He spit,
- 59:33Speaker 1: you know, and it's like the most that that is.
- 59:38Speaker 1: If I could have just one part of turkey hunting.
- 59:41Speaker 1: A lot of people would be like the gobble spring thunder.
- 59:45Speaker 1: It's a powerful noise. It's a powerful noise. If I
- 59:48Speaker 1: could have one part of turkey hunting in pill form,
- 59:51Speaker 1: that I could just take the pill and get the feeling.
- 59:54Speaker 1: It would be the feeling of when he's goblin and
- 59:57Speaker 1: goblin and he stops gobbling and you wonder what happened,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: and you like he spooked something and then all of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: a sudden. If you could get that in a pill,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I would be addicted to that pill. Did you should
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: sneak up behind me in the office, guys? That's the
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: spring thunder. I told you about that ranch. Uh, it's
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: actually here in Montana. The first time, Uh, I went
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: out there, there were so many turkeys. I just got
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: up early, got up on this little ridge, you know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: and it's like a series of small hills and ridges
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: eastern Montana, and he hit diaphragm call and then it
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: was like whoa, and then that would que the next
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: ridge and the next ridge and the next ridge, and
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: it was that was the way it was in my mind.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: That's rolling. That's that's my other favorite thing. When you
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: hit like you hit a crow call or something and
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: you get a shock able and then other girls too.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: I'm the man, I'm a man. Uh. So they're drumming
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: right next to us, and I got this photographer with me.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: So nice guy, real excited, like he likes to hunt.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: That's how I knew I was gonna like him right away,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: because he was like out there to hunt turkeys. He
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: was like you could tell if you said to him
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: you could have hunting or taking pictures, he'd probably go hunt.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: He'd go with hunting. It's my feeling. Um. The turkeys
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: circle around, drum and drum and drumming, and all of
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: a sudden they're in the photographer's lap and I have
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: to change my position and I'm not able, like I'm
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: real nervous about what kind of shot I'm gonna have
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: until these turkeys because they're circling the calling trying to
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: figure out where's the hand, wears the hand, and they're
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: in his lap, and all of a sudden, you hear
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the noise that no turkey hunter likes to hear. Ah,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: And that's his way of saying something is not right.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: That's like huh huh, what what what huh? He starts
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: doing that business, and then he gets faster when he
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: gets faster, and if his head was blue or white,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: like he's excited, all of a sudden, it's red. He's
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: got his head up. He wrecked his snood changes. The
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: color change is an amazing to witness. One of the
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: craziest things in the outdoors in my opinion. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: it's the greatest thing in the world. Changes. Color goes red.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: It's trouble, he goes And then I got interrupted, just
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: follow ups that he's been doing a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I've been thinking about that word
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: drumming and spitting. Everything I'm reading is saying that the
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the spit which comes first is actually from his mouth um,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: and then the drum is actually him forcing air up
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: through from his diaphragm. No, it's not him doing his
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: wings really, and a lot of people say that that,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: you know, obviously it's his tracting hands. What are you
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: looking at the truth about turkeys? Or is this a
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: legit website. I've been before from dot com to a
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: state agency website. His his his is is air. He's
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: forcing No, yeah, he's not doing that with his wings.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: You mean you mean he's not doing like a rough
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: grouse when he's dragging him. No, he's not the ground,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: he's not the rough grouse. So I gotta point out
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: is the same way, ma'am. They're built. They have the
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: little wattle up there, a little pocket rough crouse drums,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: he's drumming, he's beating his wings, and it sounds like
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: someone trying to get a lawnmower started. Yeah, but there's
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: gotta be somemar involved in that too, right, Yeah, he
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: puffs up. Yeah, and he's a Spellings married. I'd be
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: willing to wager because when you find him, they have
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: that throat, sack is puffed up to it. When you
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: hear way off in the distance someone trying to get
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: a lawnmore started con degenerator because what it always was
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: to me like doing he's on his log. He's on
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: his drumming log. Do you know that they feel that
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: that's a limiting factor in rough grouse populations. Suitable drumming log.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: He's got to have a drumming log, see whatever, he's
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: gotta have a like to have a rough grouse set
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: up a spot, to have a mail set up shop.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: He needs to have a drumming log at a specific height,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: and he needs to have a specific diameter, a perimeter
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: of visible ground around it, and absent that like you
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: can you can manipulate rough grouse numbers in an area
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: by creating suitable drumming logs. That's awesome. He needs to
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: find where he can get the right height and see
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: around him and make sure it's safe around him to
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: then get up there and start going. Yes, I feel
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: like I should do an album of all the animal
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: noises that I know how to do. You know, you
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: can sell it as like a sleep aid, like a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: white noise generator, and me going to remember that you
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: would just be a very and now rough and now
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: um not a monkey, and now a dazzle of zebras.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: So oh, I thought, tell my hunting story and don't
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: want to get around to the word that we need
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: to revisit. And then I want to hear your hunting stories.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: So he's like, and I think a lot of turkey
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: hunters if you were a super moral turkey hunter, I
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: feel that you would not shoot the turkey. Like do
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: you think Parker Hall would shoot a turkey that had
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: started to put? Oh my gosh, yes, if he was
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: in range, Ah you do? Oh yeah, he thinks it's
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: im moral to shoot a turkey using a decoy. Yeah,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: but you think he thinks it's moral to shoot a
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: turkey that's putting just because he's busted you, Parker Hall
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: thinks it's im moral to shoot a turkey. He thinks
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: there's a special place to Hell for people who use
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: turkey decoys. Well, we're all here from Georgie about turkey decoys.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: And his answer was, I don't want to go to Hell. Now,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: he's from a state with a rich, deep turkey hunting history. Yeah,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I'm not hunting a lot of them states. I've never
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: heard that. It's like he puts it. Man, does he
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: call to him, like, shouldn't it be the same, He wouldn't. No,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: I mean it's not anywhere near the same, because, like
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: he points it too, It's like, when there were no decoys,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you had to be a damn fine turkey hunter and
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: a damn fine caller to kill turkeys. Decoys came out
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: in every Joe Schmo out there was starting to killing birds. Yeah,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: and I'm sorry, I like, I totally I agree with them.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: I use decoys. I'm trying a bunch of different kinds
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: of decoys this season so I can speak to it
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: from experience? Do they give me an incredible advantage? Yes,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: I just don't know what I got too so far. No,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: they've seen what the ones I'm talking about never saw
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: the decoy your Texas hunt. You're the one the all
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: sweet talking, all sweet talking is using a fan like
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the next level, like a real like the one that
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: you made. That's if you're If Hell has solitary confinement,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: that's where you're at. What happens in Hell's that they're
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: able to calculate the temperature of Hell because the description
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of Hell talks about a brimstone in a certain state,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: and so I think you can tell, like very precisely
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: how hot Hell is. That's good. That'd be good to
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: know because that's apparently where we're going for Yeah, I
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: think that using a Turkey fan, even though I do it,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: I feel that if this is true, if Parker Hall
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: is correct, I feel that that's that's you go to
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Hell and then into solitary confinement, not allowed to be
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: with the other people in Hell, like Parker Hall is
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: kind of. I was like, listen, man, I drive a car,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: like it's way easier to get to town nowadays in
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: a car, are you driving a horse and buggy Like
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: as time goes on, we're as humans. We take the
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: advantages that we're given technology. What if I told you here,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: take this here corn, stirred up with this here sedative
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: and sprinkle that out and in the morning go out
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: and pick up your turkeys. Would you be like, oh, yeah,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: it's like driving a car to work. Starting to sound
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: like you kill a turkey with a drone. Well you're yeah,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: you're talking about stuff that I know you don't believe.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Maybe maybe you got me I think about it more.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: I'm coming at you later. Maybe the future get defense
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: right and you hot wire super high voltage so that
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: every animal that hits the fence dies and go out
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: in the morning pick them all up. Because if we
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: just wanted to version baits, bait the ditch, bait the ditch,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: wait till all average, we could we had four tags each,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: wait till four times are in the ditch eating that bait,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: and then sit. I'm talking about you know, I'm talking
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: about a subtle change taking into the extreme. I'm talking
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: about a subtle change in the approach to turkey hunting
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: and or a subtle change the process. It's an efficacy
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: question or excusely what you're talking about. You're talking about
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: some old timey business that people aren't going to know about.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you can read about it in uh in
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: UH tenth Legion tenth Legion uh Tom Kelly's book. He
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: talks about colonel Colonel Tom Kelly. One of the ways
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: that they shot out turkeys is when pop hunters meet hunters,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I think he calls them, would bait. They dig a ditch.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: There was maybe a photo or eighteen inches deep. They
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: bait it with corn for a while, and then on
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the day that they wanted to reap harvest turkeys not reaping.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: That's where you take a fan and walk up on
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: him with a pistol. They would sit at the end
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: of the ditch, maybe five ten yards off it, looking
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: down the ditch, so that once all the turkeys were
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: in their feeding and you can make one call, all
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: of them would lift up their heads and with one
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: shot you could rake across all of their heads and
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: then fill a gunstack phone walk home. Very efficient, it's
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: very efficient. No, no, let's go, let's go. So well,
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: I'm talking about a subtle that's like using a decoy,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: is a subtle change in turkey hunting tactics. It's a
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: subtle like it's it's a it's a move forward, so
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: subtle you could do without. Though, yeah, it's a it's
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: it's a slight move forward in turkey hunting tactics because
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: you're not it's not filling a ditch with corn much
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: in the same way. I'm getting this analogy much in
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: the same way that using a horse and buggy to
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: get to get to town is a whole lot different
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: than using a car to get to town. To subtle
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: change in the way that inveyance. So there's my analogy
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: now here. Well, here's what I was saying the other day,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: because I I there day not on you were with me.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Now totally with you, because I'm gonna come in and
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: say that I'm gonna come in out. I'm gonna come
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: toward you on this. They're not the turkey I'm trying
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: to talk about. I remember that story is left where
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: he's going and there's a photographer standing next to him. Um,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: last weekend, I got a turkey using a fan. I
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: couldn't move a turkey. He was with a whole horde
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: of hands and he was not gonna but he was
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: at the time of his life. He was in the Turkey.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: He was in a situation that Turkey's dream about being
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: in this Turkey was not gonna move and they were
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: moving away. And I took a Turkey fan from the
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: Turkey that I'm trying to tell the story about which
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: I took the fan off, and the photographer showed me
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: a phenomenal trick of how to the fan off so
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: that it becomes like an actual fan that you can
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: fold up and spread out and fold up and spread out. Dude,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: it was the would normally do it. Yeah, it is.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: There's an other joint. Normally, when you cut it off,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: you cut it off at the Roman nose. Cut it
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: off at not the Roman nos. You cut it off
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: at the pope's nose. He's like, no, you If you
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: go above the pope's nose, there's like he's got eighteen
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: tail feathers, there's like eighteen. It looks like when you're
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: separating the ribs on a deer, not sawing through him,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: but popping the joints. There's like eighteen little teeny joints
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: above the pope's nose and you cut there and then
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: when you mount your fan. I used some I mounted
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: my fan. Okay, you know Ronnie Bam, Yeah, I had
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: a tremendous impact on my life. Ronnie Bam fixes old company,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Yeah he has it. If Ronnie Bam affected me, and
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: he affects the bottom line of Miller. So Ronnie Baam
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: gets frustrated by shitty coolers like Coleman coolers, because what
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: always fails on a Coleman cooler hinges. And yeah, Ronnie
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: Bam is a mill right by trade, so he deals
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: a lot of conveyor material. Convey material turns out is
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: wonderful for repairing things. So Ronnie Bam always calls around
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: hunks a conveyor and when his cooler fails, he makes
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: a hinge out of conveyor belt material. You just put
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: the lid on how you want it. Take the conveyor
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: belt material and screw or bolt it to the lid
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: into the body of the cooler. And I don't care
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: if World War three happens on top of that cooler,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: that hinge will still be there. The cooler might be melted,
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: the hinge will be there, intact and fine. It's indestructible.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: I had a hunk of conveyor belt material laying around.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: But I switched away from shitty coolers, so now I
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: just have a conveyor belt material and YETI coolers. So
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: I took my fan and cut it the way the
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: photographer Austin showed me. How What the hell is his name,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Austin Stapleton? Like that guy, I cut it the way
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Austin Stapleton showed me, and then drilled a hole and
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: mounted it on a conveyor belt handle, which has a
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: very natural flop to it, and it's very limber and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: looks super realistic when you twist it, and it's ultra light.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: It's an ultra light Turkey fan, and I collapses. So
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: I can take my fan and go fold it up.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: And then when I get ready, and I tightened it.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: I tightened it up just right with a screw. Where
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: when I get ready, I opened it like a lady
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: in a Western opening her fan up a floozy in
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: a Western, and opened the fan up and it stays open. Man,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I can't borrow that, sure, thank you? Where was I?
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: So here's here's the here's the thing. Here's the thing,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and I'm gonna be done well. I gotta tell my
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: story real quick and I gotta talk about thing. I'll
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: keep on talk about the day I'm sneaking up with
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: this fan on a turkey that won't budge, and I'm
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: just using the fan to block my view and he's
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: actually posturing toward my fan. And I eventually snaked my
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: shotgun barrel literally through the feathers of the fan and
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: wait for the hens to get clear. I couldn't shoo
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: because he had all his hands. Eventually the hands got clear,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: and I shot turkey. And I'm feeling guilty about it.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: But then I'm like, you're using an actual like what
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: could be pure? You're using the feathers from a turkey
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: two go after a turkey. It's not plastic, it's not rubber.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: You made it yourself, you devised your own. You're using
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: bio like, you're using like bio mimicry. How is that
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: not pure? But it's pure. It's like purer to have
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: some rubber factory produced turkey ac simile on a steel
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: stake driven into the ground. But it's it's less pure
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: to like take the bird's own feathers and use it
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: in fashion a device by which you can go get
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: another bringing into this whole purity scale. I haven't said
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: anything about that. I'm more taught just talking about this
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: fight up efficacy. Yeah, I'm just rastling with the whole thing,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: is all Yanni. Okay, Well, I think you know, because
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: there's some people that think any sort of blind hunting
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: is unethical. There's people, but not people have been doing
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: that for thousands of years. It's not I keep using ethics. Ethics.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I was gonna say, it's not quite personal. How I like,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: I would not want to. I have never and would
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: not want to unless I was with my kids shoot
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: a turkey out of a pop up blind. I've never
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: done it. Yeah, I would only do it with my kids.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: But if we're being honest, like hunting right now is
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: just a lot of different forms of how we prefer
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: to hunt, it's preference versus ethics, Like it's an ethics
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: when I think about turkey, any ethics go too? Am
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: I using a bow or a shotgun? I'm using a
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: shotgun every single time I possibly can, because I feel
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: like it's ethically a better way to get the job done.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Wound lost with severe be on turkey sovera. I've seen
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: some of the best archers that we know in modern
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: hunting times wound turkeys three or four of them in
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: one hunt. So I know some really good bowl hunters
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that did a lot of turkey bow hunting. Eventuallys were like,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: it's just I switched back to Actually I've two or
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: three years straight just hunt with a bow. And I'm like, no, no,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: there's no unless it's archery only season and the birds
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: are fired up, I'm staying home. I just it's got
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: to be a shotgun for me. That's ethical. But the preference,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: so I'm like, you hunting a blind, like being out
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: in the springtime turkey hunting, you want to like have
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: your full senses, your full set of senses. It's like
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: the woods are alive for the first time in a
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: long time. I want my full set of senses. I
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: don't want to be sitting in a tent, sitting over
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: a plastic Yeah, that's what it feels like to me,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: like just sitting against a tree. I don't see. Yeah,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: and that's what And there's no again, It's like, there's
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: where the preference in the ethics thing. Ohs, I prefer
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: not to hunt with a bow because with a bow
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: he should probably be in a blind or it's better
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: to be in a blind. Ethically, I don't want with
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: a bow because it's it's a less effective killing tool.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: So both of those things are happening simultaneously. For me,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: comes to turkeys, it's yeah, it's like it's so much
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: like I use a shotgun, which is easy. It's easy
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: to kill a turkey's shotgun. Uh. I like to sit
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: in trees or like like lean against the tree because
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: I don't like that feeling of being in a blind,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: and then I'd move around a lot turkey on. So
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: I don't want to drag the blind around. But if
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: I saw a guy in a pop up blind with
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: a bow, two things I don't do, do I feel like, oh,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: he's not all be like, no, he just has different
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: personal preference. There's nothing to do with like like I
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: keep saying moral because of my own I'm always saying
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: moral because like the own feeling I get if I
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: call a turkey in like a turkey like purity. The
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: thing that they're gonna be most proud of is that
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: there's no decoy and you hear a gobble way off
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: two in the afternoon or no, it would be this,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: it's two in the afternoon, there's no decoy, and you
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: shock gobble up a turkey yet two in the afternoon,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: and then you gradually coax him into shotgun range and
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: he comes in and he's strutting. That is the pinnacle
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: of turkey hunting, sprinkled with a few gobbles. A few gobbles,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: you get him hot, you get him like that to
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: me is like wow, well there's some every version that's
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: less than that. It's not as it's it's not as
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: exciting to me. There's a perfect combination of the amount
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: of time he's allowed to strutt within your sight and
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: then shooting him like if he if he comes rolling
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: in behind a tree like a turkey, boom, shoot him.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: It's not the same level of purity is if he
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: comes in, spits, drums, struts back and forth, is looking
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: around you stay still and give the bird that um
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: I definitely had. Can you hold off because you're not
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: it's not your turn to tell your hunt story. I
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: want to hear the whole thing, Okay, but it's gotta
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: finish two quick things up. Yeah, I'll start with a
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: description of Stephen Rinella as prowess in the woods. However
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: you want to do it, Uh, so the bird putts
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: and I have to actually wait for the bird to
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: move away from the photographers. So the purity score is
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: going down because who the hell hons with the photographer? Well,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: I do all the time. But that's like I can
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: imagine Diana, the goddess of honey, being like wanting to
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: hit me with lightning. So the birds moving away, he
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: gets clear the photographer. Then I'm like, man, kind of
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: dicey shot, but I get a nice shooting gap, like
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: shoot turkey and he did piled up. Yes, yeah, I
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: mean yeah, I don't know, man, those I've had a
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: lot of flopping birds as in My first instinct after
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: pulling the trigger is like get to your feet as
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: fast as humanly possible and sprint to that bird. They
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: will get up and leave. Yes, that's like the turkey hunting,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: but that's like the thing you see. The trope is
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: like you kill it and you run over immediately drop
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: your gun to run over there. But I'll tell you, man,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: those turkey loads are dude for freekish. We'll get it
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: to my story too. But I mean dropping turkeys and
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: not even a twitch was your bird like that? I
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: mean didn't even know he well, I got injured by him.
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: Oh when I say piled up me, he wasn't going anywhere,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: but I got. I ran over there and I got.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: He was still scratched my eye on his wing when
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: he's beating his wing. Um, But yeah, it is good.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: I don't know, man. The one you guys are speaking of,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I'm assuming is the federal T S S, t s S,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: tungs and supershots. You guys are shooting the seventh seventh
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: and it used to be like because the way it
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: used to work is and I think some states still do.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: You're still not allowed to use sevens in some states,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: or you're not allowed to use nines. No, I think
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: it was when we I think who were we talking to?
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Was it going to Do or the Sportsman's Alliance guys,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: they both might have been working on that issue. Like
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the law was the rules the rules antiquated like they
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: because they were. They had rules around shot like pellet
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: size and for efficacy. But with the new like super
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: fast like high velocity, high density tungsten shot, you can
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: just put a bunch more pellets. So TSS the tungstens
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: in the word right, tungsten supershotungs supershot, so you can
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: use sevens nines hands, which we haven't tried yet, but
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: I've definitely shot turkeys with the sevens and the nines.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: And another thing that you get from you going smaller
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: shot size is you just get so many more pellets downrange.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: So we opened up some twenty gauge that was a
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: mix of five six sevens and pour it out on
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: some that was called third degree, yeah, and then right
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: next to it opened up a nine with nines, and
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: I mean you can just see it. It's just I mean,
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: you're doubling, maybe tripling the amount of pellets going down
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: range to one pellet to kill a bird. You know,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: I used to use third degree and liked it, but
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: not I like that other stuff because you get really
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: really dense patterns with that many pellets, and those things
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: are zipping, yeah, and there's they're spending. You know a
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: lot of people are gonna say, oh, man, that sucks
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: too expensive for me. And look, man, if you're the
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: guy that just rolls around his ranch and you know
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: you're not gonna actually be turkey hunting, but if you
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: see a turkey, can jump out and shoot him and
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: then you can keep going about your work. You know,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: that's like the ranch Montana rancher type of a hunt
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: right where you're just efficient as possible and spending money.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: But if you're gonna travel let's say more than an
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: hour to go turkey hunting, and you're like worrying about
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: whether you want to spend a dollar or fifty cents
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: on a turkey shell versus the five or six bucks
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: um or even higher for the tss IT ranges I'm
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: looking at, and I think it's a new point. You
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: could spend up to forty five bucks for a box,
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: for a box of five nine bucks and you touch
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: that trigger. Yeah, but how much is your turkey take
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: and how much does your traveling on? How many actually use?
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: I've shot two shots and killed two turkeys this year.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: They come in boxes of five. If you're using more
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: than five in a year, you're having a good year.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: If once you pattern patterns, that's that That is where
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: I would say it is expanded. You have a five
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: shot pattern, that's uh. But I don't know, man. But
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: with the tungsten, the confidence that I have right now
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: shooting my set up jamming them, Yeah, yeah, I'm competent,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: far farther than I should be. I'm limiting myself because
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: of like the new set up where it's like I
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: don't need to shoot as far as I think I
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: could with those loads. And you think like denser, right,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: denser than traditional lead or traditional heavy shot. And so
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: if you're getting less, you pull the trigger. They got
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: these setback forces. You're getting less, you know, deformed pellets,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: and that's what causes flyers. So you have less flyers,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: a denser pattern, and we all pull axe turkeys like
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: drop him on it, like on the spot. You know
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: what's interesting is when I went over there after we
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: got the bird tagged up, we're walking back and I
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: realized there was a tree I didn't even register in
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: my mind that had about a two and a half
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: inch diameter and that tree looks like an absorbed half
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: that load, but the other half went through. And yeah,
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: now was my turkey hunt. Now, what did you want
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: to say about my haircut? Oh? The word butch. Just
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: the interesting thing from childhood that I didn't pay much
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: attention to there was I grew up down the beach
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: from a gay woman who would fish with my father
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: and his friends. And she was elderly, and it's just
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: the weirdest thing, and like troubles me and puzzles me
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: now because I didn't even know what it meant at
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: the time. They would call her, and she would call
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: herself butcher. And my father and his friends were you know,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: World War two guys. I I do not think they
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: would have Unfortunately, I do not think they would have
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: been as accepting of a gay man that they hunted with,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: that they fished with. Probably not, but they were. They
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: would walk with in the morning, walk dogs with, and
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: fish with butch, but call her butch, which is a
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: derogatory term for a gay woman. So it's a it's
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: like a derogatory lesbian term. And I just like I
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: would love to go back if I could go back
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: on my brain now to understand like what that dynamic was,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: how she perceived the word, how it came to be
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: that she would go by that nickname and ask those
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: guys like what, because it was just so matter of fact,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: it was like, oh, yeah, the gay woman. I would
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: imagine now that's still within the community, and again imagining
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: that with amongst you still might call each other butch,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: yourself butch, but it's not something that someone outside of
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: the community would call. Yeah, she was like like a buddy,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: like buddies with these guys, and so I don't know
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: like what they're under just like you know, how words
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: are used changed so much, like I don't know what
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: they're understanding of. It was that they were they like,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: oh I shouldn't or they just like that's just a
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: matter of fact. I have no idea. She was like
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: accepted in that group and that's there. That's their acceptance
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: of her was to call her that right, like, hey, butch,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: you're probably one of us now. But I imagine with
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: all these types of terms in twenty nineteen as a
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: less accepted Oh, if I could be if I was
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: probably yeah, Like now, if I could go back in time,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: I would go down and knock on the door and
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: and be like, you know, uh, I'd like to discuss
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: something with you because there's a thing that we all
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: do that I want to understand better. She might say, well,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like that's one of the
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: ways I can get accepted, and like if that's what
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I gotta go through to get accepted, that's fine. Maybe
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: we had a what we talked about. I never retouched
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: on this. But when we were down in Mexico, you
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: guys are all there. No, I think you had you
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: take you had to take off. Maybe we talked. A
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: woman wrote in and she were talking about finding hunting partners.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: And a woman wrote in and she said, I'm a
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: woman and I'm gay, and it makes it very hard
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: for me to find people to hunt with. And I
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: talked about that letter and we got I don't know
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: how a dozen plus people writing in being like, I'll
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: hunt with her anytime she wants to give her my
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: email address, and not one person wrote in to be
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: like screw that lady. It was like, dude, send her
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: by way, We'll hunt with her. That's awesome. Yeah, now
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: you're saying about how good Steve is in the woods.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: Oh I didn't say good, phenomenal phenomenal one Uh yeah,
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: that would we want to talk to start this one
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: with a conversation about zones, what zones mean, and how
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: your turkey became a conversation of zones. Well, it just
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: became a place that we all got to meet up at. Really. Yeah.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: It was kind of like I'm seeing you a while, Yeah,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: what are you doing over there? Um? Like yeah, we can,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: we can get that. But Ben and I had been
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: hunting all morning. Steve been hunting all morning. You guys
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: stayed in your own zone. Yeah, And eventually we heard
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: a shot as we were walking back in, and we
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: kind of discussed not hunting for the midday and I'm
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: going to get some awesome barbecue. Um. And eventually it
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: kept hearing the bird gobble from kind of the little
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: ranch compound there. It's like, all right, this is yds away,
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: throw them a gearback on started walking down the road
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: into my zone, in this Steve zone, and then here
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: can you enter my zone? Then here comes Steve and
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: gung ho to go hunt. And it's helpful to have
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: a caller and a shooter. Uh, I would I would
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: say most times turkey hunting and um. So uh Steve
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: and I um headed headed back into the woods. Um.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: And then there was some discussion as to oh, wait,
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: I just told Yanni and dan Yelle that I was
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: leaving and now we're coming back into this zone. So
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Yanni and Danielle and made me working into what had
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: previously just been Steve zone. UM. And that took some
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: some time to kind of figure that out and communicate
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: by a cell phone with some like spotty coverage phone
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: and dropping and still lead to hurt feelings. I'm not
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: sure how hurt the feelings really work. Yanni. Listen, I've
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: been a tremendous amount of time with him that was
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: as upset as he gets. That's ten yes, with my kids,
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: that is as upset as he gets. Um, were you
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: feeling like you were with your kids at that point
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: when Yanni sulks, just disappointed. When he sulks, that's his upset. Now,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I've seen him actually flip out on people, so that
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: he that wasn't because I've seen him flip out a
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: couple of times. Um, But he was sulking. He was
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: in the eight. He was in the eight sulk go ahead.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: So while that's getting figured out, we're waiting for this
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: bird to call, and we're doing some kind of aggressive calling,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: and then finally we hear gobble and we set up
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: move a very short distance, set up call a little bit.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: At Steve's doing the calling, I'm just hanging out the
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: bird gobbles again, and we get a very clear impression
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: that the bird is not going to move closer because
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: of um, just just the topography of the landscape. So
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: we get back on the road again. Don't leave the road,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: and then it will move like seventy five yards and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: then the road cuts back and basically makes more or
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: less within a few degrees a straight line to the turkey.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: And at that point we set up again. Um. I
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: set up in a beautiful turkey killing spot which I
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: didn't like, which Steve did not like. So then he
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: repositions the turkey, almost blocking the entire shooting land. If
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: you're not gonna sit where I want, I couldn't lose.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: Put the decoy where I want, yes, um, And it
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: was a nice little blind corner situation and turned into
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: about a thirty yard shot probably doably. Could I tell
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: what my concern was? Please do? There was a Texas fence,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: not a high one but but stiffy yep, And I
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: couldn't tell what side of the fence he was on
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: me neither, And so I was worried that that I
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: wanted you to be in a position where should he
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: come up the fence line. You had good a good
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: view through the fence, yeah, and you might have felt
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: that you did. But that's what that's what. But it's
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: just tired to communicate. That's what I was getting at,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: was like, what if he I don't know, but what
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: if he Definitely the road was definitely plan A plan B.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: I had, uh you know about it, two and a
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: half foot gap, had he come up the other side
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: of the fence and had things worked perfectly. Um, but yeah,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: so one call and you know, it was one of
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: the called gobbles back where you're like, oh, oh boy,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: this this bird is very committed. You're feeling your tonsils
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: and will more than likely not make it past this scenario.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean seconds seconds later, his head comes
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: around the blind corner and I really could have shot
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: him right then. And then part of my brains like,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: because there was a Jake decoy his register, he registered
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: that decoy in a visceral way, yes, And part of
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: me was like, oh, we'll hold off and let and
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: let's see what this bird does with the Jake decoy.
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: I really want to see that interaction just for future.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: And then the other part of my brain was like,
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: you're an idiot. Kill that bird rain So I did,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: but it comes when he sees that thing he's got
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: like a hold on a minute. Yeah, it was great,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: It was great, but yeah, that that thing was just
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: deader than a way ug man. Just yeah, I like,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: I have rarely seen turkeys flop over that thing that
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: did not move after that. Meanwhile, you honest is doing everything,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: and that's power to try to get a gobble out
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: of that bird. I was also we see there the
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: fact that I was maybe even three yards away from
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: you guys also in the zone, also hearing me that gobble,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: trying to determine if I should go over there or not,
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: and knowing probably not. So I just sat there because
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: I was going. I was trying to get out of
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: the zone on foot because I was very I was
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: challenged by your like I'm going hunting. I'm like, well,
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: if he's going hunting, I'm going on. So I was
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: took off to go back to our earlier zone and
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: on my way to the zone, which was bird rich,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: which is bird rich. On my way over to that zone,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: I heard a gobble. So I sat down and I
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: called a few times, and I was like, it's probably
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: not polite. So I just sat there and heard us.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: Then you heard us harvested, and I heard you harvest
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: it the bird rich zone. Uh. That Ben was going
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: off too, and then got distracted from. Is important to
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: note because that is the exact same zone that NA
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: returned to later on. Yes, it is important to note.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: But yeah, I was last the last I felt. I felt.
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: You didn't intentionally chide me, but I felt chided into like,
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: am I gonna go sit here and wait for lunch
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: or I'm gonna go like cal and valently trudge back
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: into the forest to hunt the wild turkey. So I
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: was like, I'm off, and I went off to skip
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: your afternoon shower hunting. Yeah, yeah, skip. My Ben has
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: a very stringent showering routine in the state of Texas. Yeah,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: it's morning, midday, and evening shower, I believe pretty much
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: every Yeah, if if I could do it every hour
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: on the hour, showing more than once a day, yeah,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: you know I was doing twice a day while we
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: were there, because I had lived there and I know
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: all the ship that's crawling on me. I went off, oh,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: you were doing like tick and jigger work. And so
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I get in there rather than just like walking around
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: in my underwear picking. I figured getting in the shower
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: is a nice way that I was periodically checking my scroll. Yeah,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: because I started having like you know, when you start
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: thinking about it, there's a chigger. That's a chigger. That's
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: gotta be a chicker. I did come up with one
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: chigger bite right on my waistline, but one which is
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: just I felt. Yeah, it was just like the weird
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: curveball the state of Texas through me because it is
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: that experience down there that week was so completely different
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: than every other Texas Texas experiment experience that I've had,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: between chiggers and cactus and everything else. My wife. My
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: wife said, how's the trip. I said, well, the turkey
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: hunting was so so, but I didn't get I didn't
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: see a rattlesnake, I didn't get a chicker bite. I
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: didn't get a tick on me, so I win. So
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: I'm still working a storm in my knee, Yeah, that's it. Yeah,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: I think I had a cat storm too and in
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: my in my behind. But other than that, I'm good
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: and in going to Texas. If you get out safely
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: without any kind of alpha gal syndrome or any long
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: lasting effects, you're good. Yeah, lime disease, any other court
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: of ailments viruses. I just I just got a note
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: that at the end of that trip, and we did
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: the fundraiser for a wild cheap at the end at
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: the Yetti flagship store in Austin. They pulled, uh six thousand,
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: five hundred bucks at night. That's great because Cal was
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: auctioning awkward auction. Yeah, he wasn't doing that. He wasn't going, hey,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: hey guys, listen, listen man, I'm not here to bullshit
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: you people. You got money, I got I got something,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: I got stuff to sell it. Let's hear another quick
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: turkey story. I'll give you a quick one. Um, this
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: is what the next day, correct, we had We had
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: a couple of buddies who had a property at lease
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: property close to yea relatively close similar area to also
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: in the Lanta River down River aways, and Yanni and
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: I decided to hunt that virgin property at least to
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: us with with two buddies of ours that own archery
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: country there in Austin, Tyler and Brennan and I had
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: hunted last year before. I had hunted that property, but
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: Yanni had never never hunted it. But I felt like,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: you can tell me if I'm wrong. At it's a
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: pretty good turkey spot. Yeah, as things go, Yeah, nice
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: rang YEA heads up, heads up, to the river. So
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: we headed over there in the morning, got up early,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: made the drives like forty five minutes, headed over there,
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: and struck off in the morning. I went with h
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: I went with Tyler, and Brendan and Yanni went off together.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: They had a bunch of fired up gobblers in one
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: spot on this property today before. So we struck off
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: and headed over there after those birds and see if
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: we can strike them up. We struck up a couple
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: of birds across the river, which I was dumb enough
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: to think we'll find some other turkeys. It was the Yan. Yeah,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: this is from us. And we were in a spot
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: where you know, you want to talk a hundred of
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: your floods. I mean, there was full boats, there was docks,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: there was I mean it looked like the water was
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: fifty ft above normal. I mean it was unbelievable, like
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: stuff deposited on the banks. Yeah, I mean just to
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: breathe everywhere. I mean it was. It was kind of
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: a waste land there at that stretch of the river.
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: So we walked the river called a little bit, struck
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: up a couple of birds across the river. But I
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: was dumb enough to think, oh, we're gonna hunt these
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: birds that are on our side. I don't want to
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: mess with these things. We should probably have we struck
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: up some some birds out were fired up. Probably should
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: have stayed there and got him to fly across as
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: as you guys did at the other spot. Anyhow, we
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: went up the hill set up where we knew these
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: turkeys were at, started calling and we basically complete silence
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: once birds hit the ground, And it was how could
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: this happen? How could this never happen? This never never,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: never experienced this in my life. So yes, we we're
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: basically screwed. Oh, Yanni did the Yanni Turkey Marathon. He
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: walked from the other side of the entire property all
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: the way to where we were, and I heard this
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: fing and he said he had his track function on
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: yea on on X. Brendan did because hunt with him
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: from Was he using one of those stupid watches that
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: always tells you the wrong everyone those watches, Dude, I
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: walked eight miles today. My watch told me so often
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: they cannot be We gotta give Brandon. Brendan Hansen is
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: a multiple time gold medal Olympic swimmer. For whatever that's worth,
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: For whatever that's worth. So he's been there anyways. He says,
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: you guys watched seventeen miles looking for turkeys. Yeah, and
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: that was after I did. That was a person as
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: long as it doesn't I don't accept any data from
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: one of those I watches. I don't know how far
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: it was. I am nine thirty when I hooked up
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: with you guys. I was already like, God, I heard this.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: That was a freaking walk about. I just did what
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about. There's a lot of fit bit fit
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: bit like whenever someone was you know, fit bit people.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: We got one from my kid. He wanted one real bad.
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: He wakes up, he's wake for five minutes or his shows.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: He's gone like three thousand, three thousand yards. Did come
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: downstairs eighteen flights of stairs today? Now? We I was.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: I remember hearing the faint crow call in the distance,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: and I thought, well, that's the direction that Yanni's in.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: But there's no way in this short amount of time
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: that he's covered all this distance to get to where
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: we are, because we left him on the other side
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: of the property. Almost I hear this faint crow call,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: give it to me Ali in the distance. What did
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: it sounds like do away off, do a way of
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: you the part I don't like the end part, just
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: a little something extra for the lady. We're just having fun.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: So there is was he in your zone? Did he
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: violate your own kind of kind of? But it's not
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: that we didn't really establish his ownes at that point.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: We just thought, well, Yanny so far away, there's no
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: way he'll trudge because he had to go through what
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: eight gates to get what do you mean? Kind of?
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: I was in touch with the freaking lease and I
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: was like, can I come down there? Because where you
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: guys sent me is obviously the first girl I've ever
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: been put in You thought you thought you were girls.
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: It's called the lat being creep yep, coming into your own.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: I was like, that man has big strides, made it
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: all the way over here. But I heard a faint
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: stretching fences from one end of the rag plushing gates
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: over I heard his faint crow call, and I thought
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: that sounds like a Yanni crow call, not that it
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: didn't sound good because there's not a lot of crows there. Yeah,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: there's not. You don't hear there's some, but there's there's
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: not something you don't hear that three note crow call? Uh.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: And then I heard I heard a yelp, and I'm like,
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: that's a Yanni. That's a Yanni yelp and it has
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: like two stages. It's got, it's got, it's two staged
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: six notes and it's two stages. Um when those notes,
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: so I knew that was Yanni. Well, Yanni came over
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: and met up with us, and there was it was quiet.
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: You hadn't heard a gobel to that point, at super
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: quiet um to the point where it was getting a
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: little bit depressing. So we endeavored to to go and
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: grab some sandwiches or We're gonna go. Reset, got in
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: the truck, rolled down to this little creek bottom where
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: I had heard birds goblin before. I'm like, let's just
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: get out and hammer him. Um. We got out and
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: almost as soon as we got out of the truck, right, Yanni, Yeah,
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: we blew the crow call and he answered and he
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: was boom answered. Now this is and what we didn't
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: say about either your two birds. You know, to Steve Reno,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: I was doing my best in version of it, but
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: I'm sure it wasn't Steve. Steve believes his crow calling
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: is his Olympic in nature, like it's gold medal. There's
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: something like particularly shocking to a turkey when I crow
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: call piercing it. Now, I gotta say, when I pull
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: that crow call out, I watched them they take two
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: or three steps backward to get behind to get behind
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: me before I do it. So you you I didn't
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: see that though in our short time together there was
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: no shocks. Uh, but I believe you. But Yanni shocked
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: him up and they were just kind of like what
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: yards away? This bird was put down in this little
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: little creek bottoms, beautiful little um dry bottom. It was hot, man.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: So yeah, we knew we we we need to find
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: some shade. It's not that day. My friends and um,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: so there's four of us. We're like, we'll all four
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: go down there and see if we call us burden,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: which is generally not prescribed it we've been heavy, Yeah,
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: we went in't heavy, and it was it was decided
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: that I would shoot this turkey. Yanni had his fan
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: and we went down into the bottom. What do you
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: call your fan, Yannie? Slim shady, Yeah, slim jimsickings, slim pickens.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: I think it is what you tea we got slim
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: Pickings out. We went down there and hit it. Not
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: not sooner did we did? We say slim because it's
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: only a fan with like a turkey head. You might
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: as to talk about it. Yeah, give people his turkey
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: decoy's head off. Yeah, it's a premost chicken on a steak,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: which is sweet decoy. I like what I like about
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: it has the steak, has like a handle, even has
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: a little you where you can drop your shotgun into it,
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: so you can be holding the fan and you're that's
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: that's way. That's like a coat hanger. No, no, no,
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: you can you can fan with it, or you can
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: just stick it into the ground and use it as
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: a decoy. But I wanted it to be a little
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: bit more poor, a little bit more running gun friendly,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: and so I basically whacked off three quarters of the
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: decoy body so it was just the head left, and
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: you know, did a little tweaking and basically attached that
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: to the stake handle and the fan. And so because
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: he's so slim and two dimensional, slim shady, slim, shady,
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: slim pickings, Well, slim, that's your favorite actor, Slim shady, slim,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: slim Pickings, I did like eight miles, tell you what.
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: I never saw that, but he's in that movie Happy People. Yeah,
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: he's pretty good, and that's pretty good. He's no slim pickings. Yeah, no,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: I doesn't have depths and body of work of doctor
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: Strange Love. This is the greatest movies ever made. This
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: is why podcast exist. Go on. You just need one
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: role or you get a ride an a bomb, and
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: that's kind of that's you. That's your one shining moment.
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: Uh So we all flour judge down to this bottom.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: This turkey's he's pretty fired up for a midday bird,
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: and it's hot. It was pretty hot. Um. I didn't
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: have a lot of confidence because he seemed a little
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: he seemed like he was in his strut zone. He
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: didn't really want to break. Is that is that how
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: you see it? Yanni? Yes, I would say so. So
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: we all, I, Yanni and I kind of got up
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: against some trees and we knew he had a There
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: was a fence in between us. Was one of those
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: six Strand fences that we were talking about, and we're thinking,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: this dude's gonna have to come across that unless we
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: you know, unless we jump it. But if we jump
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: it were too close. He comes, he starts gobbling, We
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: sit down. He's not really he wasn't cutting any distance.
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: For for five to ten minutes, Yanni was hitting him hard.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: I got got the old box box call out, but
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: we decided to skip closer and split up. And then
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: and then both of us calls sounded like a whole fuck,
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: whole raft. He was fired up, and he was answering
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: every time, and he was he was thundering, but he
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: just wasn't. He was in his zone and he didn't
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: didn't feel the need to come over because they I
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: think that they enjoy that. Yeah, I think that, like
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: you think that there's unfel like when he's not you're
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: calling and he's goblin and you feel that there's this
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: thing that needs to happen now. I think that they
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: sometimes revel in that. I think so too, And I
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: think this is a perfect example of what how it goes.
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: So we're calling. It was ten minutes of calling. I
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: bet and I get out the call. Him and I
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: are both gone. We're hitting it together. At some point
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: you could just tell that he was committed, like at
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: some point he was he was We were cutting him
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: off both cutting him off. He was getting a little
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: more jacked up, a little more excited. He's like, I'm
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: gonna make love double, and he had a he had
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: a triple, guy will be making love soon. And I'm
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: I'm maybe ten yards away from Johnny. And I turned
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: to him at one point and he goes, let's just
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: stay quiet. Let's let's just shut up for a while.
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: See what happens. We shut up and not it was
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: coincidence that up, And then I think he was coming already.
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: I thought I knew he was coming for sure when
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: we shut up and quit Goblin. Like thirty seconds later,
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: he just hits one and he's way closer than he was.
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: And I turned to our other two companions. I'm like,
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: he's coming, like get ready. So we've got me on
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: the left, Yahni on the right, Yahni got old slim
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: pickings just just giving into the sweet turn, that sweet
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: music where there's just tails. Had to come. He had
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: to come investigate, because silence, that little tail fan just
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: just going across. Yeah, we could see way up this
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: shady creek bottom that we couldn't see what the turkey was.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: But he came across the thick stuff and popped out ards.
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: I called him coming through the thick stuff and I'm like,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: oh dude, that's all. And he comes out into the
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: open creek bottom and we're all, there's four dudes just
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: I mean, we're not covered up at all. I'm like,
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: he might this might not go well. There's the thing
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: of beauty though, because he kind of came out of
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: the shade and right into a sunny spot and then
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: he just full came out, full strut and just glowed
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: and just and it was it was like one of
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: those like the avenues in the creek bottom. It's like
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: that avenue in the creek bottom where he got trees
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: on both sides. You got a bunch of brush and
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: there's just just like lane and he didn't get he
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: wasn't like walking the edge of lane. He came right
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: out in the open and walked in the middle of it.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: And it's like painting. You see that famous painting by
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: that famous painter of Daniel Boone coming through the Cumberland Gape.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: Just it's like he just parted the seat and he
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: was just coming through and he was just like, oh man,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: he was and he was strutting. He was hit the
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: strut and he would go back down and look around
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: like yeah, yeah yeah, coming in and it hit it
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: up and he kits I did not like I wanted to.
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: I wanted him to come in and put on the
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: show because once I saw him turning the corner, I'm like,
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: unless he unless one of us does something stupid, this
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: is over. But he took. He took this sweet old
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: time coming up the lane and then got to the
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: fence which was roughly twenty five yards away and just
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: hit it and just was he was going back and forth,
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: he was trying to find a way through the fence,
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: and he was spitting drumming like every noise a turkey
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: can make. He was making um. And so the other
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: two guys were with Tyler and Brennan hadn't really turkey
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: on very much or like almost never maybe one time
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: in the woods. So they got the show of shows.
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: I mean, he spit drumming. Just you hear a lot
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: of guys say that I want to see the show.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: I want to get the show when I kill a turkey,
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: and that means that means get to watch him come
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: shutting gobbling. He would, yeah, he would, he started and
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: gobble his whole way in and once he got to
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: shooting range, he was just going back and forth on
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: the fence, just hitting it because I mean just spitting
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: the drum as low as I've heard. Didn't gobbler very
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: much once he got in close. But they don't do that,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: So the show sounds kind of perverse. You'd want to
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: see that and then shoot the turkey. But everybody who
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: sits around sits down to Thanksgiving turkey, what was the
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: show they got? It? Shows up in the back of it.
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: Nothing shows up. Cram to do a truck hundred dollar
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: organic turkey with thirty thousand other turkeys cram to a
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: truck and they dragged it out by its feet and
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: run through a slaughter line. I had much rather eat
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: a turkey that showed up like that. Dude, I've been
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: on I just showed up. I just got back from vacations,
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: so I haven't eaten any part of turkey. But when
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: I do, I will be thinking of him coming down
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: that lane. You'll be picturing one of those sad trailers
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: for the white turkeys going down the high off the
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: back of a giant bim big cryo back bam, like yeah,
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: and I will admit to having made a bit of
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: a mistake here when I killed the turkey. He was
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: looking try to get through the fence and he was
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: putting his head up trying to and he looked to
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: get through the fence and figured out he couldn't get
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: through it, and I feel I'm gonna kill him now. Yeah,
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: he kind of he kind of came out of strut
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: and put his head close to the fence. So he
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: really wanted through that fence. He wanted through a bad
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: he was. He was seeing another Golers strut in twenty
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: five yards away. Man, he wanted to like get up
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: in the kicking nuts on it. He was, so he
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: kind of he came out of a couple of times
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: where he'd be like showy, showy, showy, and then he
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: kind of going to three quarters strut. He could see
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: his head looking at the fence. He'd walk a little
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: bit and then let's go back. I was thinking if
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: we let him and let him keep put on the show,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: he might have backed up and flown over the fence,
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: which would have been out a shot as soon as
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: he landed. Just just had a principle, but it he
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: he came at broke strut and was like looking through
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: the fence, looking and I thought I could shoot him
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: right now. I'm gonna blow his head off easy. And
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: they went back into strut and started walking towards Joanni
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: a bit away from me, and I thought, well, it's
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: time to go. So I shot him when he was
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: in full strut and just wrecked him. I mean, just
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: I've never I mean, I took he didn't twitch, did he,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: I mean, he just down folded. And it turns out
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: that I hit him pretty hard like both And you
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: were saying you thought maybe it was a butchering mistake.
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: I'm oh, I'm sure. I'm sure it wasn't because I've
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: done a lot of them. But it could have been.
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: But when I pulled his his both his legs back
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: to cut his thighs off and his both of his
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: I guess it would be his his femer bone and
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: snapped in half. Like when when that payload hit him,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: he just felt so fast that the force of it
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: broke both his legs. I still don't understand. I mean,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: I understand, like the I'm not saying I understand either,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: but that's what that's what I encounter when I broke
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: him open and he drops the damn fast. I remember
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: carrying him out like later, throw him back the truckolate
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: could have been tail. That would have been a good
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: way to play. I think we would have seen bruising
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: had we had he gone through some sort of trauma
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: like that, right, Yeah, No, there was no bruising the legs.
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: It was just literally both his legs were I don't know.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: I mean, that's the best ex plane so hard, like
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: he broke his own size like he dropped. I mean,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: I've never seen a turkey. Yeah, I've never seen turkey
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: drop faster than that and not move like did not.
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: I've definitely seen him fold like that with a zero flopping,
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: but not even I mean, what else would cause that?
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: He didn't walk in there with those two legs broken
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: like that. I can tell you that cleaning there, that's
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: what you were sat. I didn't like make the same air.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: I don't know how you'd clean it so hard as
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: a breaking I'm telling well, I got you're using the
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: truck skins that turkey. I put a golf ball up
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: its ass, uh No, I j t V and Will
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: standing there and I flopped him open to pull his
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: breasts off in his thighs and legs, and he said,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: holy ship, because when you just flop them open, you
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: can see it. Um. So that's that's my big takeaway,
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: the payload from the old tss put a hurting on
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: that turkey. Yeah. And if you, if you, um, you
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: could tell one turkey story, Do you want to tell
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: the story of Daniells first turkey? It's certainly more interesting.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: You're right, because I got to get in on a
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: couple of turkey kills, um call, and I gotta help
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: me double up on the last day. It was fourth quarter.
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: That's it. That's one of my favorite hunting things that
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: happens when it dudes like, man, I'm just gonna run
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: out real quick before we leave, because Yanni never says die, no,
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna run out quick before we leave. It was
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: too close for me though, I don't I didn't like
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: the pressure of that hunt. It was like you gotta
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: you gotta push the repeatedly because you're like, well, I
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: do not get fun because you're just in the back
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: of your head. You're constantly like, well, I wonder if
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: we can leave a little bit later. I wonder if
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: they're gonna be piste off if we get there at
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: three instead of two, because it was about one when
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: we killed. Any who, Yeah, I got to hunt with
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: Danielle for for her first what she considered her first
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: real in air quotes Turkey Hunch and wild Game chef
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: Daniel Pru. Yeah, Danielle Prue wild in the home. Um
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: and uh, we had a similar morning to what you
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: guys described, but I went back out. The only one
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: thing I'll add to the little story, but we can't
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: really go off on a tangent here, but bringing back
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: up Cal's bird story, we were working that same bird.
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: You guys are obviously much closer to that burden we were,
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: but you know, it was late in the day. It
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: was nude, one pm something like that. We've been out,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: daniell have been on a turkey tour. My Onyx had said,
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: like six or six and a half miles. At that point,
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: I could see it she starting to drag a little bit.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: But now we're like set up, got a pretty hot bird.
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: You know, he's working and and we could hear your
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: calls a little bit. I think she even mentioned it.
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: But AnyWho, man, that shot goes off and you could
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: just see her shoulders slumped down. She said to me,
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: I didn't I feel like someone burst my balloon out delay.
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: I know these boys got lost. AnyWho, we got back
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: out it maybe we were lost, we were in our zone.
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: We got back at three or so, and uh man,
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: it was amazing. What was interesting about that country is
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: that if you got on a high point at all,
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: you could hear a gobble a long ways away. I'm
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: talking like stuff you can measure in uh quarters and halves,
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: maybe even three quarters of a mile. Um. Because the
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: one thing we'd eventually getting on, I'm thinking, he's for
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: sure on our side of the river. And as we
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: get closer, I'm like, yep, on our side, but definitely
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: down at the river. Where we show up at the river,
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: that bugger's three hundred yards on the other side of
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: the river. And um, yeah, they just they that it
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: just whatever. It was topography and the and the floor
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: that really let those gobbles travel far. Anyho on the
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: other side of the river. And although I had no
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: I knew that Steve had some birds that came across
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: the river. Um. I was thinking, man, this is a
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: long shot. Daniel Tha was such a long shot that
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: she was kind of in her head thinks she didn't
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: tell me, But in her head she's thinking, how long
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: are we gonna sit here and just listen to this
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: turkey gobble on the other side of the river that
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: we can't even see, Like this is a stupid idea.
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: We're wasting our time. We should be doing something else.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: But he was hot, and he was, you know, pretty
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: much goblin almost every call. So I kept at and
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: kept at, and eventually I could tell he moved down
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: the bank a little bit and he popped out. I
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: was like, oh, well, he at least moved out of it.
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: If it was a struct zone. It was weird because
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: he was like it sounds like he was coming from
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: between two sort of like what I would call like
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: machine shed, not the bar and more like metal side
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: and machine shed looking buildings, like he was strutting like
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: in the park a lot like like tractor and mower storage. Yeah,
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: more of a garage and the barn. Anyway, he pops
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: out and it looks like he's sort of angling our way,
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: you know, still doing the strutton and and you know,
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: zig zagging, and eventually the zig zags get smaller and
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: smaller and smaller than zig zag turns into a straight
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: line going towards the river bank, and like vally'd be
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: better get ready and take the situation seriously, you know,
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: And uh he gets He actually goes up on one
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: of those bluffs that you described and does a few
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: circles up there, and I'm thinking, man, you know, if
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: he pitches, it's on, you know, but there's also a
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: really good chance that he's gonna do a few circles
- 2:00:45Speaker 1: and just sitting there and gobble at us for the
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: next hour and then go back up to that machine shop,
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: and you know that would be at the end of
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: the story. Well, lucky for us, he pitches and lands
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: on the Mojave Desert Sandy Beach don't like to fly
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: two or three hundred yards away, and uh goes into
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: full strut for a second, drops full strut, and then
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: just starts be lining it towards us. And uh yeah,
- 2:01:09Speaker 1: definitely one of the more incredible and more interesting wild
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: calling I've been in, uh part of to see one
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: fly across the river and they walk across the Sandy
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: Beach to me, Um, you got you got all this
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: on your phone video? That's right, that's right. I made
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: a little Instagram story as they call it, and I
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: saved it in my Highlights, which I learned about recently,
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: and it's like, it's a pretty happy you can go
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: check it out. Fine, just at Janie Poodles. That's right,
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: it's actually yeah Janice Underscore, who tell us so proud
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: of your Instagram? J Underscore? No j A N I
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: s underscore p U T E L I s Yeah,
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: And under Highlights, wasn't it? It was twitched it okay,
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: snake it easier. He's like, I am a Latvian, I
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: am a hunter, but his name is that all I am.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: It's if you go on Instagram you want to see
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: the deer hung up in the fence, go at Steven
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: Ronella and then we're not. When you're there, go to follow.
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: I guess I got into a weird place of like
- 2:02:18Speaker 1: being like the whole cute Instagram handle thing and you
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: know what I mean. So anyways, I went playing simple
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: be an old Calori. So this bird come nothing right
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: to the grassy bank, and I thought he was gonna come.
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: He's sort of. At some point he went perpendicular to
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: us a little bit to get on the bank, which
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: at first I was nervous about because I thought he
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: was gonna we're gonna lose sight of him, and then
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: he was going to get into the thick stuff and
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: then actually maybe even circle us and come through the
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: thick stuff and pop out it, you know, five or
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: ten yards. But instead he gets just he just wanted
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: to get up on our level. And uh he started
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: coming right at us. And the whole time we're you know,
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: just basically sitting there with his fan in front of us,
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: and uh turn it back and forth, moving it up
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: and down a little bit. And uh, yeah, he gobbled
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: and strutted and all the way to thirty yards and
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: then I made a couple of calls and got him
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: to stretch his neck out. Yeah, Danielle was all over him.
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: And then she turned to you and said, holy sh it,
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: but yeah, yeah, did I think about hunt with Danny,
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: Like a lot of times you hunt with people and
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: they get something, and I have this thing. I started
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: worrying about the meat. YEP. I'm like, you know, are
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: they gonna You're worried about what's gonna happen to it?
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: Are they gonna put in the freezer and freezer burn it?
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: And never forget and forget about it and throw it out,
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: but nicely the hunt with like a wild game, like
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: a real serious wild game coad, you never have to
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: have that concern. Yeah, she tried to render the turkey
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: fat out of its sponge. So did it work. She
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: made a broth out of it out of the damn sponge. Yeah,
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: which he's saying. The broth is good, not much fat,
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: but the rendering liquid was good. That's interesting. Now that's
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: next level wild game. You know how most of us
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: has the big box or the turkeys coming in. We
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: have these visions of Grandeur that I like to call him,
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: which means in my head, I'm like already I'm not
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: purposely thinking this, but my brain, my little subconscious ego,
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: does this where somehow I drift off to like the
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: time when I'm gonna be back at the tailgate with
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: Cal and Ben Steve and we'll be looking at the
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: spurs and high five and having a beer or maybe
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: like thinking about what the European Mount is gonna look
- 2:04:35Speaker 1: like on the wall. You know, it's it's so weird
- 2:04:38Speaker 1: that the brain does that, but it does because it's
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: not like I don't I'm not sitting there going oh yeah,
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: you know, I can I just drift away, But Danielle
- 2:04:47Speaker 1: was instead of her visions of Grande were more like
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: tacos out of the thighs, and then this is gonna
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: need the breast, and then I got this idea about
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: the Pope snows that I'm gonna do, and she was yeah,
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: the point being that, yeah, she had a big plan
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: for every single do I gotta worry about it. That's
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: I don't like that feeling of worrying about what someone's
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: gonna do with what they just got. And in the
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: minute they're like, like, do you want mine? Just take it?
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: Because I'm like, if that's what you're I'm gonna take
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: it because I'll make sure it's something. I'll get it
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: in the right hands. And I don't trust you anymore.
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: She uh, yeah, she made some incredible Uh would she
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: call him tequila line? I believe mine tequila tacos out
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: of the thigh mostly. I think Turkey on especially. I
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: don't know if it's more than other, but most people
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: you run into are talking about the breasts and the
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: breast only like not this crew, but most people in
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: my experience that run into were talking about that way.
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: There's a there's this like a slight expansion to legs
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: and thighs, but taking it a little further like Yannie does.
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: Gizzard's hearts, livers and things like that. Sponge I think
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: is his critical man. It's oh, you know what I'm
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: doing this year, and I'll be reporting back here in
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: a while. But I've saved every single uh turkey foot
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: or I guess what's what's below the drumstick stock. I'm
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: gonna try making stock, yeah, because a lot of chefs
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: make they consider the best stock out of chicken feet exactly. Yeah. Now,
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: I take the spurs and cut each side of the
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: spur you taught you taught me that trick. So it's
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: just a spur and a little bit of the leg bone.
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: Drill a hole in it. And I got a thing
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: that I used to pull the lights onto my garage,
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: and I string him on that string. It's real nice.
- 2:06:38Speaker 1: Someday someone's gonna come and steal that string from you.
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna hunt them down and kill him. I've adopted,
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: starting with this dark scenario halls uh way of um or. Yeah,
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: his system of keeping tally or keeping uh you know,
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: mementos from turkey hunts, which is one spur from each
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: turkey and it goes onto a string, just one. You
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: know what my other pool cord is, do you write
- 2:07:02Speaker 1: something on the Spanish mackerel's jaw And the other pool
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: cord is turkey spurs. Turn the turkey spur light down?
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: But cut your hand? Am I? Uh downgraded because I don't.
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: I kill a lot of turkeys, but I don't save
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: I mean, I have some fans and stuff in my freezer,
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: but I don't anything. And I've mentioned the thousand million times,
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: but I had the spur earrings made for my wife. Yeah,
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: I don't. Yeah, I just don't. Have never struck me
- 2:07:31Speaker 1: that I had to save him. That's good for any like. Yeah,
- 2:07:34Speaker 1: I look down on um. Good checking in on that.
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: So fourth quarter hunt cat, we we have to go.
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: Some folks have to go to the airport. Some folks
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: have to go to UM the Stars in the sky,
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: UH doc viewing, UH slash fundraiser at the Yeady store
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: all the way back in Austin. So we have a
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: couple hours to hunt. Uh Janis and I decided to
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: hop in the little rand trig the side by side
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: and UH try to hit this general zone that really
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: hadn't been uh touched since opening since our opening morning,
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: and that's where the birds. Ben and I found the
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: birds and they were strutting on the other side of
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: the fence, and um, that was we had stopped several
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: times to try to locate and get a response. We
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: finally get to this point and we get a far
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: off gobble on the other side of the property of
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: our property. But it's like where you gotta put all
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: your eggs in one basket at some point in the
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: ticking clock scenario. It was worth a try, right, Yeah,
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: So we went up there and set up on him
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: twice just to kind of know, just to cut the distance.
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: You know, you never know exactly how far he is
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: until he's pretty much within shotgun range. And uh, the
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: fence was a problem, but he started parallel in the
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: fence and then luckily for us, we get to a
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: point where the fence it takes a hard right. So, yeah,
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: there's a ninety degree turn on the fence, and so
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: you can imagine if two folks are paralleling a straight
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: line and then there's a ninety degree turn, all of
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: a sudden, you're basically face to face faced beak Man
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: fences played a big role in You just gonna say
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: the same thing. I'm like, it's the story of fences, man,
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: the whole story of fences. I like that. Yeah, rap
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: ro running along. We uh we saw three gobblers. What
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: we thought we were chasing was one ended up being three,
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: and uh, cal put that. We had to creep around
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: that little corner and cow put the fan up. At
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: some point I called I don't know what I called for.
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: I do remember they all three of them simultaneously. Gob
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: They saw the fan and you could see the wheels
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: turned for a few seconds, and then they pretty much
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: charged in. This was my first experience watching the fan
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: in action, and you could just see like everybody was
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: strapped and then they were like first one gets her,
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: like everybody relaxes and just starts straight line. And so
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: I shot one and then uh, the other ones jumped
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: on his dead buddy and it's pecking and spurn him
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: and whatnot. And then I realized that we had four tags.
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: And I'm like, couch, she didn't know that one. He's like,
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: if you want the meat, yeah, we'll have to touch
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: on that next time. We're talking about turkeys, which probably
- 2:10:51Speaker 1: won't be long. Is uh a, Turkey's proclivity to one
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: his buddy is harvested too when his buddy gets killed
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: to then spur to attack Peck and spur his buddy.
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: This is next level kicking a man when he's down. Yeah,
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: they turn on each other real quick, assholes. And he's like,
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: I've been watching you and now with my chance and
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: not gonna spur you. And or if they walk away
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: feeling like they killed him, Yeah, maybe if he's later
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: like you know that one I was with, I killed him?
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: He sure, he tripped and fell and I killed and
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: I killed him. That took advantage of that, That's what
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: he tells people later A lot. There was a loud noise.
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: There was a loud noise. I don't know what it was.
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: It caused him to trip and fall. He tripped and fell,
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: and then I killed him with my beacon spurs, Steve,
- 2:11:44Speaker 1: should we preview the thing that we filmed down there
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: speaking of all this? Are we're going to keep that
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: top top secret? Should be? Well? Yeah, we filmed the
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: thing that explains a lot about Turkey. Is probably the
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: best instructional Turkey piece ever made, the pre eminent uh
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: in the in the descape of Turkey instructional videos. I've
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: never read the book, but you could say we basically
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: just like transcribed the book Seventh Legion Legion, Colonel this
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: is more like Seventh Legion into a visual format that
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: everybody can understand. Yeah, one of us is the Poet Laureate,
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: the new Poet Laureate of Turkey Hunting. It's a it's
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: a big deal. What are you nodding that before, Johnnie,
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: because you look like you're about to wrap it up.
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: I'm wrapping her up. You like do it. I'm wrapping
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: her up. Thanks for joining
