- 0:20SPEAKER_01: It's too many men on the mic presented by vintage credit, and that's what L L C production.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Now here's how to do it.
- 1:02SPEAKER_07: And I'm just gonna throw the first start out there as a continuation of last week's segment.
- 1:08SPEAKER_07: I saw two deals signed in the last couple days.
- 1:11SPEAKER_07: I think they were both eight and eighty-four, eight years, eighty-four million bucks.
- 1:16SPEAKER_07: Uh, one of them was to a 21-year-old on the last year of his rookie contract.
- 1:22SPEAKER_07: So let's think about that for a second.
- 1:24SPEAKER_07: Life's pretty good.
- 1:25SPEAKER_07: You're playing in the NHL, you're 20-ish years old, you're telling your friends, hey, watch me.
- 1:30SPEAKER_07: I'm playing on TV, and mom and dad are checking in, and you're living on your own, and you're making a nice salary,$950,000.
- 1:38SPEAKER_07: But guess what?
- 1:40SPEAKER_07: Next year, holy smokes, you hit you at the lottery.
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: You get an eight-year contract, and you get an eight year contract, and you get an eight year contract.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Well, I think these teams are they're doing the analytics first and foremost.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Um, this is the last like gas for these eight-year deals.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: They are no longer gonna be legal in the league after this season for depending on when the draft class was.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Um, with Ryan Leonard for the Capitals, I mean, you're looking at this.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Um, here's a kid that if you can lock him up at eight million dollars or ten million dollars over eight years with the salary cap, which is probably gonna, you know, go up another between now and let's call it four years from now, gonna go up another seven million.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Now you've got yourself a bargain, especially.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, all he has to do is score 20 to 25 goals.
- 2:39SPEAKER_07: Well, and the thing that's insane is uh um I'm showing my colors.
- 2:43SPEAKER_07: Uh yes, I'm a St.
- 2:44SPEAKER_07: Louis Blues fan and St.
- 2:46SPEAKER_07: Louis resident.
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: Buchnavich, our forward, has been criticized by our fan base for the last two years.
- 2:54SPEAKER_07: How can you spend 8 million bucks a year on this guy?
- 2:59SPEAKER_07: I don't think we're gonna hear any of that this year.
- 3:01SPEAKER_07: Not when we're giving out these kinds of contracts to these guys that you know have played for a minute.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Perspective is everything.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: You know, Ryan Leonard is not the the best player on his team.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Um, he is gonna get paid, like I think the he's not the he's not the fourth best player on his team right now.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: But I would say that if you are looking at long-term value, if you're looking at the analytics, so to speak, of managing the cap, and and look, thank Philadelphia for setting the table for everyone with Logan with Logan Cole.
- 3:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they're gonna get a lot of a lot of cards this year.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I mean 100%.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: And then you've got Drake Batterson, a 28-ish player up in Ottawa, 10 million at 8 million a year.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Um I'm sorry, 10 million at 10, 10, 8 years, 10 million for him as well.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: And he's maybe your third best forward on the team.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Now, I I I just look at it as with Leonard, I can see, I mean, that for him, he's he's not even gonna be 30 when his contract expires.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: So he is gonna be able to go get his his ticket.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: He'll get his ticket.
- 4:16SPEAKER_07: This guy's gonna be living on interest for the rest of his life.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Batherson, like he just hit a home run for himself because uh two years ago, he was probably a five and a half million dollar player.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's a 30 goal scorer, but he's also 28 years old.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and this is a this is an eight-year extension.
- 4:36SPEAKER_07: So he's set.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: He's he's set, he's set, and he put out his career.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: He put to bed like Americans don't want to play in Canada.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Um, because he's like, uh they said, we'll give you a 10.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Yep, okay, I'm good.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Sign.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, I'll I'll take it in Looney's.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Um, but but I I just if to me it's fascinating how quickly some of these teams are like spending to the cap.
- 5:02SPEAKER_07: It is, it is.
- 5:03SPEAKER_07: They're uh they're right up at the top.
- 5:05SPEAKER_07: Um so interesting times in the NHL.
- 5:08SPEAKER_07: Wanted to throw that first start out there.
- 5:10SPEAKER_07: Uh, also want to point to the calendar.
- 5:12SPEAKER_07: We're right smack in the middle of September.
- 5:15SPEAKER_07: I don't know what your house has been like, but mine has been and the back to school drive and new gear and practice and routine.
- 5:25SPEAKER_07: And so uh we have the pleasure of having uh two great moms join us on the show today and to talk about that, uh, to talk about everything starting over again and um the season, the school year, routines, the carpools, the pickups.
- 5:43SPEAKER_07: And so uh I have the honor of introducing Nicole Zellwigger and also Angel Milney to the too many men on the mic podcast.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: Angel Nicole, thanks so much for joining us.
- 5:56SPEAKER_07: We're giving some mom love out there today.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: Give a little shout out to USA Hockey, they they feel it as well.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: There we go.
- 6:05SPEAKER_07: So I I I'll I'll I have to believe your house is the same, uh, because we know your kids, they are on hockey teams, but they're also students, and so it's that time of year where everything starts back over again.
- 6:21SPEAKER_07: And you're probably saying, I remember when summer was not too far back.
- 6:26SPEAKER_07: So, how are things in your house right now, both from a school perspective and uh from a hockey perspective?
- 6:32SPEAKER_07: Nicole, what are things like in uh in your household?
- 6:36SPEAKER_05: Well, I can't believe we're only on week three or four because it feels like we're like nine months into the school year already with everything that's going on.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, I have a freshman now, and uh learning the new high school routine uh with him and um helping him get through that and that transition has uh taken up a lot of our time.
- 6:55SPEAKER_09: Waking up an hour earlier, too.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, probably more than an hour earlier.
- 7:01SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Um getting up early, getting into the routine, and and that's real important in our house is finding a routine just because I don't know how else we juggle everything that we're doing.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, it's been a crazy whirlwind already.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Angel, talk a little bit about.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, you you have a son who is playing hockey, he's a goaltender, if I'm not mistaken.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: And he is uh he's at Shamanas.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: So you don't even, I mean, you don't even have the luxury of a bus.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Somebody's gonna drive him to school.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Talk a little bit about how the transition's been from the summer to school and still having these the load of classes and maybe other activities and obviously hockey.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: Well, I feel like it maybe it's his age, he's starting to go through puberty.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: He is he's always been pretty good about a routine except for homework, but this year he has like he gets it done right away.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: As soon as he gets home, he does it.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: And before it was, I need some alone time, I need some me time.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: And this year he's driving, well, as is permit, so that's a little different, also.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Um, and he thought, Oh mom, I'll get a ride to school.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: And then his buddy said, Okay, I'll pick you up at 7:10.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: And then he's like, No, that's okay, mom.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: You can still drive me.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: I just I don't want to have to get up earlier.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: I'm like, okay, thanks for that, buddy.
- 8:25SPEAKER_07: Priorities, right?
- 8:27SPEAKER_07: So have you been have you been hearing through your kids uh things like homecoming coming up, especially with high school freshmen, and then maybe looking at the calendar, the hockey calendar, and then looking to see if the stars are gonna align.
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: I have practice the night of homecoming or maybe a game or something like that.
- 8:49SPEAKER_07: Nicole, has that been going on in your house?
- 8:51SPEAKER_05: Oh, we uh that's funny.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: This week is homecoming at LaDou, so we're very excited, and um, we have uh tonight or tomorrow night, we have um we have the powder puff and the parade and all of that.
- 9:08SPEAKER_05: So Cooper plays in the band, and so the band is a participant in that.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: And then um, yes, we also have practice, and then Friday we have practice, and then Saturday we have actually Friday we have two practices, and then Friday uh is the game, is the football game, and then Saturday is homecoming and also a hockey game.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: So we have football games and hockey games that we have to juggle because the band plays at at the football game, so it's a lot, and somewhere along the way you'll sleep.
- 9:36SPEAKER_05: Uh maybe.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: Angel, as we as we get into you know, this time of year at Shamanade, there's a lot of things.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, he has commitments to his house, other other diff other uh, and for those of you at home, Shamanad is broken into different houses, kind of like their their groupings, um, and they have all sorts of activities and competitions.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: How is how is your son prioritizing or coming to you and saying, hey, I need help organizing this, or get me here, get me there?
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: What's that been like?
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I think he's been pretty good with it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: He's very every morning, mom, what do we have after school, you know, or the night before?
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: He's really adamant about knowing he doesn't like things thrown in at the last minute.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: And like he will have to miss homecoming because his is next weekend and we will be out of town for hockey.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: But I think he's okay with it.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: He he doesn't really, he just wants to play hockey, and if he can go to one dance a year, he's okay with that.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: So that's good.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: That's his priority.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: But he that like they're on a school trip this week, so he has to miss like two hockey practices because they have mandatory trips.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: And he said, Well, nobody's really looking forward to it, mom.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: And I said, Well, and he's and he's like, I said, What why do you think he's like, I don't know, because we don't have to go to school, and next year we don't get a trip.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: I'm like, Well, maybe people aren't thinking it like that, buddy.
- 11:07SPEAKER_07: Nicole, what kind of uh band commitments does uh Cooper have?
- 11:12SPEAKER_07: Because that's a whole nother activity outside of hockey that uh and outside of schoolwork uh that's going on.
- 11:18SPEAKER_07: What's the band like and uh what kind of routine does uh Cooper have around that?
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: Well, uh we were a little surprised when we moved to the high school.
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: As I said, he's a freshman, and we didn't understand, and we might just be my husband and I didn't understand that the band in high school is is the pep band.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: If you are signed up to play an instrument in the band class, you're also signing up for a commitment to play pep band for the football and special events and the basketball games and the graduation.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: And so the commitment uh was not something we understood until I went to the meet the parent, I mean meet the teacher night uh before school, and um and the teacher was going over the the dates and he puts this um you know schedule on the board for all the parents to see, and it's like 30 dates.
- 12:11SPEAKER_05: And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 12:12SPEAKER_05: I thought he was signing up to play band during school and then a couple concerts in like middle school, and that was just simply not the case.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: So um luckily uh Cooper loves uh band, he now loves playing pet band at the football game.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: So we um we lucked out that it turned out to be a great thing, other than the additional conflicts that we're now um running into.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: And I I think like Angel said, I mean, it's a it's a it's a juggle, and sometimes Cooper prioritizes like he's very excited about the homecoming dance.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: I don't know why.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Um I'm gonna probably did he get a suit as he bought a suit?
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: He has a suit.
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: Well, so this summer we went to an event where he needed an orange suit, and I said to him, Are you gonna wear the orange suit?
- 13:00SPEAKER_09: Is it Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber?
- 13:04SPEAKER_09: Sorry, I couldn't help it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: Sorry, an orange suit, right?
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: Um, but he told me no, he's not wearing the orange suit.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: So he uh yes, we had to get him a normal colored suit that fits him, and so he's very excited.
- 13:17SPEAKER_05: We'll see uh how that goes.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: But uh yeah, so it's a lot of juggling though.
- 13:22SPEAKER_07: So Angel, uh, I know Grayson is an athlete in uh many different uh facets.
- 13:28SPEAKER_07: So outside of hockey, where does he spend his time?
- 13:31SPEAKER_07: And outside of schoolwork, he's got uh another activity in there somewhere, right?
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he he plays roller hockey, not a lot, but he'll he doesn't St.
- 13:40SPEAKER_03: Louis yeah, he does a couple um tournaments, he doesn't do any practices, he doesn't want to get into any bad habits, but then he plays baseball, which baseball used to be a huge commitment.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: So we uh we actually stopped the club team because he couldn't do three nights of baseball, three nights of hockey.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: It's just too much.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: So he just plays Jaminade now.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a great point to maybe pick up pick up the the topic.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: There is there does become crit you get to critical mass, yeah.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: And you know, I I know Cooper's a freshman.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Is Grayson a sophomore or is he a freshman?
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: So even as a sophomore, you get to critical mass, and we probably haven't even um introduced the social life and the social aspect, which trust me, as they become juniors and seniors, um, it's going to be, you know, there's gonna have to be just you know, there's choices to be made.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: I I know both of our sons, um, you know, my son was lucky one year that he was able to go to his homecoming because we weren't traveling.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but it is, it it's finding that balance and really that normalcy of what should happen what we think should happen with high school life, but also ultimately, what is what does your son or daughter want to do?
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: And I think it's interesting.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, as you have those I know that it was never an easy conversation with me and my sons because I come from I'm a hockey coach, so I'm like, of course you're gonna go play hockey.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: How do you have those conversations with with your with your children about hey, we're gonna support whatever decision you make?
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: Because sometimes it's gonna sometimes you're gonna miss something, and and FOMO is a real thing for parents and kids.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: You know, Nicole, you know, talk a little bit about that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: Well, uh the great example is the dance on Saturday, and he's got a game on Saturday.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: And I actually, from a coach's perspective, I'd love to hear what you have to say because I said to Cooper, um, from a timing perspective, we could get you to the first half of the game, then you'll have to leave somewhere in the middle, and then we'll get you home, you can shower and get to the dance.
- 15:46SPEAKER_05: And I said to him, I want to reach out to your coach, or you should reach out to your coach, because we're working on him um advocating for himself and communicating with the coach himself now that we're getting to be a little bit older.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: But I said, I want to talk to the kid.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: Um, but I want to I want one of us to talk to your coach about the concept of is that more disruptive to the team to have you there for half of it and to have you in for certain plays and on certain lines, and then you know, halfway through the third second period, we pull you out.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: Like, is that worse?
- 16:21SPEAKER_05: So he should just not go at all, or is it better for him to be there at some point, or to be there and just cheer on his team and not play?
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: And then because that's just as important in my mind and his mind too, to support his teammates, even if he's not playing.
- 16:34SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's a fantastic question.
- 16:36SPEAKER_07: And uh, if we had a hundred hockey coaches, I think we'd probably get several different answers.
- 16:42SPEAKER_07: Um, I think it's a life moment, and I think he should take advantage of it.
- 16:47SPEAKER_07: As much as uh uh we'd love to have him the entire game, uh, even half of the game.
- 16:53SPEAKER_07: Uh, I think you'd you should enjoy that life moment, and we'll see you at the next practice.
- 16:57SPEAKER_07: Uh, we know what kind of competitor Cooper is, and uh we know he'll bring it the next time we get to see him.
- 17:03SPEAKER_07: That's my uh my answer.
- 17:04SPEAKER_07: What do you got, Coach?
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: Um, you've got four homecomings.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Unless you're dating somebody and you're able to go to his or her homecoming.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: But you got four homecomings, and it's October, and you're gonna have a lot more hockey games, and a game that you miss in October um is not going to impact, in my opinion, at least on a team that I coach, is not gonna impact the way I view you or don't view you, or your playoff standing.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Um, I would say if you wanted to come and skate a period, um, great.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna tell you no.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: Um, but what I would really um I would always challenge uh uh, you know, there's a lot of stress involved with that.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: It's just I mean, and not bad stress or good stress, there's just a it's a stressful juggling.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: You don't want to be in a situation where you know you leave when you think you have time, and maybe there's a you know, there's traffic, or maybe there's something that happens, the car doesn't start, or anything can happen.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: And so I I would always leave that decision up to the player, but I would never make a player feel like you should be here with your team at a game in the middle of at the beginning of at the end of September, beginning of October, versus going to an event that you're only gonna have four of in your entire school career.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: And um, the advocacy piece that you mentioned, Nicole, is critical.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and I would just say, like, you know, if you have a good coach or if you have good coaches who are allowing their players to have those type of uh lines of communication, um, and sets realistic expectations, not you know, we need to be in every game or ice time's gonna be it's homecoming, it's September 19th.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Go to homecoming.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: That's what I would do.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, now your child may say, I don't want to do that, and that's okay too.
- 19:02SPEAKER_07: Um, I love the advocating that I can't stress that enough.
- 19:06SPEAKER_07: That's fantastic.
- 19:08SPEAKER_07: Um, so these kids are getting old enough now.
- 19:11SPEAKER_07: Uh, we want them communicating with us as coaches, uh, telling us uh if they've got questions, concerns, those kinds of things.
- 19:20SPEAKER_07: So kudos to you, Angel.
- 19:22SPEAKER_07: I'm sure you do it with Grayson too.
- 19:24SPEAKER_07: And uh, we all have these methods now uh within hockey uh teams specifically to be able to communicate and facilitate that.
- 19:33SPEAKER_07: So uh so that's that's now now the winter solstice dance on the cusp of the playoffs.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: I might say, well, might want to be at the game.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: So like, but for us with Grayson, his mentality, he wants to play every game, and being goalie, he plays every other game.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: So he is he is not going to miss a game for a dance, and that is a in his mind, because you know, he'd rather that will change when he's a senior, I promise you that.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Probably and that's okay too.
- 20:11SPEAKER_07: I one of the I I you know the most difficult position to play for everything that you just said.
- 20:17SPEAKER_07: So you're there's only one goalie on any given game.
- 20:22SPEAKER_07: Uh, hopefully, you're fortunate as a team to have two of them.
- 20:27SPEAKER_07: Uh, and then exactly to your point, Angel, if you get an opportunity, boy, you want to play because on the average you're probably playing every other game.
- 20:36SPEAKER_07: So uh that is definitely a um uniqueness about playing the goaltending position.
- 20:42SPEAKER_07: Uh, but I also love that he's playing roller hockey.
- 20:45SPEAKER_07: I was talking to him recently about that, and I think that's so cool.
- 20:48SPEAKER_07: He's out there playing a different position, putting himself in different situations, doing it for fun while still attending to his love, his first love, which is goaltending.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Well, we haven't even touched on what the most important thing is, and that is school.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: I'd love if you, if Nicole and Angel, if you guys can stick around for another segment, we've got to pay a couple bills, and I'd love to come back and talk a little bit about the expectations as parents um about schoolwork and about you know the rigor that goes along with that.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Um, so if you guys can stick around, we'll be back in a minute after we pay a couple of bills here on Too Many Men on the Mike.

- 23:14SPEAKER_02: And we're back with Too Many Men on the Mike.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: We are joined by Nicole Zellwigger and Angel Milney, uh, two hockey moms as we begin our school year and talking so far about you know managing schedules, advocacy, um, decision making, the right things to do, and probably some things that you know are unique to are not unique, I would say.
- 23:37SPEAKER_07: And I would add to that that we're talking with two moms.
- 23:41SPEAKER_07: Uh one has uh uh a freshman and one has a sophomore.
- 23:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 23:46SPEAKER_07: Uh I have a freshman myself, and I remember before the school year started hearing my wife say, Remember, it counts now.
- 23:56SPEAKER_07: It counts.
- 23:58SPEAKER_07: So it does count.
- 23:59SPEAKER_07: Uh you know, the days of we'll get to it later, or maybe we won't get to it, have kind of gone by the wayside.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if your boys are any like anything like my son, who I have a soft, I have a sophomore, I have one that is flown the coop.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Um, he is at the University of Tennessee.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but I have one that's a sophomore, and there's a it's it's a great line in a song, procrastination and fuels my anticipation.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: How are you all handling the procrastination when it comes to schoolwork?
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: And do you ever put a little, you know, hang something over their head basically saying, Hey, you gotta get it done, or no hockey, or no this.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: How does that work in your house?
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Angel, what do you how does that work?
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: So, Shamanad is really good about like letting them know if what they've missed, what they haven't, letting, and I can go on an app and figure it out.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: So, I'm not sure he likes that because I'll screenshot it and say, says you're missing.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, mom, I'm not missing, they haven't created it, or etc.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: And I worried last year with his first year at high school, is he telling me the truth, or is he just telling me what I want to hear?
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: And then once you know, once I met the teachers, he I mean he would get it done, and he was normally right, but he has learned to utilize his study hall, right, his act lab at shaman very well because he likes he go to middle school there too, or no?
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: Yes, okay.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: So he knows about zap then you know the zeros are not permitted, yes.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: But he was a great tool, yeah.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: He um he likes nine to ten hours of sleep a night, like he is regimed about sleeping, he thinks it's gonna help him grow, so he has to have everything done.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: He wants to be in bed 9:30 every night if he can, and sometimes hockey's late, and I don't have time to shower.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: I'm like, you have to shower.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: You can't be in bed.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: Oh so do you guys get water delivered to your house?
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: And if so, can you give me the name of the folks that deliver the water to your house?
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Because that is not happening in my house.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: No, definitely not happening to my house.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: He he well, he's always been on the shorter side, and he feels like being a goalie, he has been overlooked because he wasn't tall enough, and so that has stuck with them.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: So he has researched on his own what he you know, vitamins he can take, what he doesn't do caffeine, he eats pretty well, but the sleep really and now it's just a habit.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: So, and this year his hockey coach does itineraries on the weekend where it lists what time you get up, or you know, what time you meet downstairs, what time's bet, and so he loves that because it's right there in black and white, and he doesn't have to stress about it.
- 26:59SPEAKER_07: Like what times currently he doesn't have to ask mom.
- 27:02SPEAKER_07: Mom, right, when is it happening?
- 27:04SPEAKER_07: It's right there.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: I printed I printed it out the last time, put one on the table in the hotel, it was perfect.
- 27:14SPEAKER_07: Nicole, how about you?
- 27:15SPEAKER_07: What uh what's going on with Cooper and grades and how's that uh how's that work?
- 27:20SPEAKER_05: Well, I feel very lucky that Cooper's a self-starter for the most part, and so he also gets assignments usually early and then can complete some over the weekend, even and be ahead.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: And that's actually his goal on Sundays is to get as much done for the Monday to Wednesday because normally he has those assignments by then, and that frees up some of his evenings.
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: Um, but like Angel, I'm a little bit of a stalker.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: There's an app that we can also access and see grades, and it's so I feel better as a as a parent that I you just said that you screenshot it and text it because I do the exact same thing.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: And Cooper tells me that nobody else does, nobody else's mom does.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Not true, not true.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: I I will tell you infinite campus and or or or campus square in my house.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: I had to turn the notifications off because it was dry, it was like my wife was like, dude, you gotta chill.
- 28:12unknown: Like, what do you mean?
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Um I think it's helpful.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, how does Cooper?
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, let's talk a little bit about because Cooper, I'm sure, being in the band and being in the pep band, like we have to practice songs, and we're nowhere near as proficient as Cooper or playing as complex of arrangements as Cooper is.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: How is he finding time to not only practice but also get his homework done?
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: And then he may have this coach who may or may not be sending film and saying, hey, take a look at this.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: You know, how does he manage that and then still be able to be a high school freshman and enjoy freshman year?
- 28:47SPEAKER_05: Well, I think unlike Angel's son, he tells me, I'm gonna go to the homecoming dance.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: I want to go to a piece of the game, but I also want to so luckily um he is trying to do it, do a little bit of doing it all.
- 29:00SPEAKER_05: But I think he's really good.
- 29:02SPEAKER_05: Um, and I think all the kids need this.
- 29:04SPEAKER_05: They have he's good at trying to compartmentalize.
- 29:08SPEAKER_05: And so he knows when he needs to take a break, he puts himself sort of in a timeout.
- 29:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's my phrase for it, but he'll he'll say he needs a break from this or that, and he'll he'll do something to decompress and and sort of take care of his mental health.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: Because that's another thing that you know we we talk about a lot at our house is you've got a lot going on, you've got a lot of assignments, you've got to learn your new teachers and your new schedule.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: And I think for him, that's part partially what you know he can recognize now when he needs a break.
- 29:38SPEAKER_07: And what's what's he do on his break?
- 29:41SPEAKER_07: Is it a Netflix show?
- 29:43SPEAKER_07: Is it um listening to music?
- 29:47SPEAKER_07: Uh what's uh what's what's a go-to for him?
- 29:50SPEAKER_05: I I think it can be all of the above, but it it has to be by himself.
- 29:54SPEAKER_05: He likes to go up to a room and have essentially it's some alone time.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: And sometimes that might just be putting on a show and and vegging out, and sometimes it's he picks up a book, he's in the middle of one of his books, and he just reads a chapter or two, but it's always some sort of quiet activity by himself.
- 30:12SPEAKER_07: Angel, what about Grayson?
- 30:13SPEAKER_07: Does he uh uh uh have those moments where he's like, you know what, I just need to take a break, and what's his outlet?
- 30:21SPEAKER_03: Yes, he yeah, he is learning um how to I guess understand his body and when he needs a break.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: So last year it was harder, so we came up with some plans.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: So we made this, we have this room in our house, and I turned it into his room.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: So it's a small it, I think it used to be an office, and it's he it he goes in there, he does whatever he wants.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: We got a massage chair, he relaxes, and it's just no, and nobody really wants to go in there because sometimes he doesn't clean up so well if he takes a snack.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I was just about to ask, there's gotta be some shortcomings, and the other thing that he does, he might not like that.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: I share this, is he likes he takes baths.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: He likes okay, mom, it's only gonna last forever on the internet, right?
- 31:20SPEAKER_03: But he you know, he he likes to take a snack and relax and just and just take a minute where it's just him.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: So I like that he's learning to do that and what relaxes him because every you know a bath doesn't relax me, but it seems to work on him.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: I I like baths, yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like that.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: I I like baths, or they're I'm down with that.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: But yeah, he he's definitely learning a lot, he's learned a lot in the past year, and I think with him, it's being a goalie.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: He he everyone says goalies are odd or they they're a little quirky, and and they are, however, he doesn't want to be labeled that, he wants to be part of his team, he doesn't want to be off by himself, he just does you know.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: So I think mentally he kind of struggled with that before, but he's learning that you don't have to believe what everyone else thinks, yeah.
- 32:17SPEAKER_05: Angel, I'll just jump in and say, I don't think I've ever thought that.
- 32:20SPEAKER_05: And we've cooper's played hockey four or five years now, and his best friends are the goalies.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: So if that's true, I think that says a lot about Cooper, but um I've never heard that, so I think I think goalies are the best, they're the strongest.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: But most of the time, if you he wasn't always a goalie, so I didn't know how to be a goalie mom, I guess.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: And a lot of goalie parents sit by themselves, they don't sit with the team, and because basically his hockey was my social life, I just sat with the parents because I didn't know any better.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: But now that the more he's been goalie, you know, a lot of them don't go to eat with the team, and it's just it is a little different, but yeah, my my well, I uh we know your coach, we've actually had your coach on the show before.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: Um, and he's he's excellent when it comes to team building and creating a great culture.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: I will say this.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: Um, sometimes goalies come from goalie parents, and those goalie parents will are you tend to see are the ones who are moving from end to end depending on the the period, and that's okay too.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: Um, right, a lot of that comes back to the mentality of the goaltender, um, and it also comes back to the relationship with the teams.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: What you'll see as right or wrong, but as goaltenders progress and they age and they get into higher levels, they tend to be a little bit transient.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: They're trying to find the team that's the best fit for them.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: And I know for for Brendan, for instance, I think in five years he had seven different goalies over the five years, which is not usually common because the rest of his team mostly stayed the same.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: And so there is uh there is something to be said about continue to advocate for yourself and also the coach setting the good a good tempo and a good culture.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: So I know your coach, I know he does that.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: So I think I think Grayson, if he doesn't want to hang out, that sounds like Grayson being in Grayson.
- 34:29SPEAKER_07: Well, and both of you are experiencing kids that play not only club hockey, but kids that play high school hockey.
- 34:37SPEAKER_07: So talk a little bit about the the dynamic that comes with being a player.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: I'll answer Phil Nicole.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Ladie high school hockey comes first.
- 34:47SPEAKER_07: Being a high school player uh versus being a club player.
- 34:52SPEAKER_07: So uh uh Angel, what's what what what are some of the differences you see in that dynamic between the high school hockey team and the club team?
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Uh well, surprising last year, Grayson.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: He you know, he he's accepted the every other game, but he also feels like if he's on, he's on, he wants to continue playing, and that's not always the case.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: And I understand if you pay a lot of money, but he I think high school was refreshing for him last year because he played really well, and they they stayed with him through all the playoff games, and the other the other goalie did you know was okay with it, so I think that helped him, but that meant a lot to him, and I think it changed his thought on a lot of things.
- 35:51SPEAKER_07: So that's great, yeah.
- 35:54SPEAKER_07: Nicole, it's only been a couple weeks uh that Cooper's been part of uh uh a high school hockey club.
- 36:00SPEAKER_07: But what have you seen uh uh and heard or heard through him?
- 36:04SPEAKER_07: And uh is it boys in a text chat and text groups getting set up?
- 36:09SPEAKER_07: What's that like?
- 36:11SPEAKER_05: I I think I'm not gonna let Cooper watch this, but uh Cooper um has been very intimidated, frankly, um, by the concept.
- 36:23SPEAKER_05: And he went through this when he transitioned and started playing um the middle school team.
- 36:32SPEAKER_05: And that was new, and um not all of the people he knew were on the team, and so that was an adjustment for him.
- 36:41SPEAKER_05: And then he went through another adjustment, although he loved it playing B team, and he that's been his favorite.
- 36:47SPEAKER_05: B team, he loved his coach, was his favorite coach ever, middle school coach, and um that he felt like he found his his place.
- 36:57SPEAKER_05: Um, but now we went through this over the summer, him trying to psych himself up and get ready, and so he's been intimidated.
- 37:06SPEAKER_05: And I said to him, these are the same people that played on B team because some as I understand it, the freshman can play on B team.
- 37:13SPEAKER_05: So I said, You're gonna know a lot of these kiddos, and he's still, um, I can tell, is is get adjusting.
- 37:20SPEAKER_05: He will get there, but he's still adjusting.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: He's uh he's uh in and again for those at home, Drew and I, you know, everybody knows that Drew and I are Ledoux high school coaches.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Um he's playing at Ledoux, it's a little bit different than Shamanade, whereas our freshmen are on the ice sometimes with seniors and juniors, and that's a game, that's an age gap, that's a that's a development gap.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: And uh what we found, and what I know I see it in Cooper every week as he's out there um you know working his tail off, he's gonna close that gap a lot faster than it's gonna widen.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: It's that's just the way it goes.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: And when he gets his first goal in a in a high school game, the light's gonna come on, and and that whole sense of uh agency and advocacy for himself is gonna is gonna take on a whole new meaning.
- 38:13SPEAKER_02: So agency and advocacy.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: Look at you.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I'm telling you, right?
- 38:18SPEAKER_09: I might have been doing this a few years.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: It's not the first, not the first player who's who's and that's it's important for parents to have clear communication with their with their players, I think, and their their kids, our players, their kids, and say talk to the coaches because almost every coach I know was a player and a parent, or still as a parent, still as a parent, still as a parent, and was also a player at some point in time.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: So there's a good chance we all felt that way.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: And I agree with Nicole on I think being a freshman, like last year for Grayson, it was intimidating for him to play on a team that was all mostly upperclassmen, because I think as a freshman boy, you're like, oh, they're not gonna like me, they're not gonna think I'm good enough.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: And it all worked out, and he, you know, came away with some really good friends that were upperclassmen.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: So I feel like this year he was a little better.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: So hopefully Cooper will be a little better next year being a sophomore.
- 39:19SPEAKER_03: I think it I just think they get intimidated easily.
- 39:23unknown: Yeah.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Well, Cooper's gonna play a big role, whether he knows it or not.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: So that's just how it goes.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Um, anything you all would like to you know chat about or ask?
- 39:32SPEAKER_07: Or I mean, you know, it's it's the beginning of the hockey season.
- 39:37SPEAKER_07: You got two coaches, so we're all heirs.
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: Well, I I have one.
- 39:41SPEAKER_05: Um, I've got some parents telling me that their kiddos are doing a lot of conditioning and a lot of other things to strengthen and support their hockey playing.
- 39:51SPEAKER_05: So, what do you recommend?
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: I mean, do you recommend us trying to support them going to the gym or Cooper has some weights that he uses at home?
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, what is your thought on extracurricular?
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: So there's a couple things, and and and um regardless of I almost said irregardless, but that would be improper, regardless of if you're playing hockey or any sport, um, development is happening, you know, from the head all the way to your toes.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: And I would always encourage for hockey players specifically, is to work on your endurance.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Um, I have had kids go to Art Hill and you run up Artill Art Hill and that might be happening again because it's something that I do with the with the with the JV team.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: Um we are opening up uh varsity um dry lands to JV players as well.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: Um, and so Will Small, who is our captain at Ladieux, um you know we'll make sure that as we look at the entire uh organization and all of our players that they're getting that opportunity, but at home, push-ups, sit-ups, um, I might even be able to find and share a picture of a homegrown uh thing that that will will help strengthen you know your arm strength and your shot and your wrists, but taking shots at home.
- 41:19SPEAKER_07: I would just add two things.
- 41:22SPEAKER_07: Uh, if you're doing some kind of activity, some kind of exercise activity, even 20 or 30 minutes a day uh is great.
- 41:31SPEAKER_07: Um, but the second piece, and it's been a theme, I feel like, through this whole conversation is advocacy.
- 41:40SPEAKER_07: So have your kids reach out to their coach and say, Hey coach, uh I'm interested in doing some off-ice conditioning.
- 41:47SPEAKER_07: What do you recommend?
- 41:49SPEAKER_07: And uh I think most coaches are will be able to share uh a couple of different sequences, you know, maybe you have an arm day and a leg day, and then uh you're always doing some kind of um uh calisthenics, uh getting your heart rate up, uh, activity.
- 42:07SPEAKER_07: But uh encourage them to reach out to their coaches, and coaches uh I think just like us are happy to provide that kind of guidance, but uh but it is important.
- 42:18SPEAKER_07: Uh, but I'll also add this because we've talked about this on the show uh since the very beginning, you are not done developing as a hockey player until you're 23 years old.
- 42:29SPEAKER_07: I'll say it again.
- 42:30SPEAKER_07: You're not done developing as a hockey player until you're 23 years old.
- 42:34SPEAKER_07: So, what that means is whatever place you are today, uh don't let that stress you out.
- 42:42SPEAKER_07: Because if you're a 15-year-old kid, you got eight years left to continue to grow and develop.
- 42:48SPEAKER_07: Uh, a lot of that is on the ice, but it's off the ice too.
- 42:52SPEAKER_07: You know, we want them to get stronger, put more weight on.
- 42:55SPEAKER_07: Uh, the weight will help protect them.
- 42:57SPEAKER_07: So uh, but I would encourage them to reach out to their coaches.
- 43:01SPEAKER_07: And uh, I know whenever we've encountered one, um we're happy to provide it.
- 43:06SPEAKER_07: Oh, and then there's Jared's home device that he has right there.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: So this is really easy.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: You get an old hockey stick, you cut, you cut it down, you drill a hole in the hockey stick, you take an old hockey skate lace, you put it through the hole, and then you drill some holes through pucks, and you put the pucks at the bottom, and you just keep adding pucks.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: And all you do is you you you roll it up and then you roll it down, and then you roll it up the other way, and that what what do you call this thing?
- 43:34SPEAKER_07: I but that's what I want to know.
- 43:35SPEAKER_07: What this thing's called.
- 43:36SPEAKER_07: Is it like wrist of torture?
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: Call it the Brett Hall.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: The Brett Hall.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: You're gonna score 86, and then you finish with this every single time.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Do this 86 times a year.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh is but I mean, simple things like that.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, certainly as they're in school and they have PE or weight training classes, those are great to take as well.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: But being at Active, um, getting with your teammates, which that will happen, hopefully, you know, for you know, hope I know it happens at Shamanad.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: I a kid at Shamanad, I've got kids at Ledou, I've coaching at Ledou.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Um, the the teammates will work on that as well.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: And again, um, I think you know, just it also kind of softens the beaches, so to speak, when it comes to that intimidation factor, because now you're seeing some of these older kids outside of the rink in a normal setting.
- 44:33SPEAKER_07: Softens the beaches.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: I got them.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna I'm I'm just gonna find I'm done.
- 44:42SPEAKER_07: Well, Angel Nicole, you've been so gracious with your time.
- 44:45SPEAKER_07: Angel, did you have a question before we break away?
- 44:48SPEAKER_07: Otherwise, we're gonna give you some time back into your evening.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Um, I have one question.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Um, so we have struck struggled a little bit.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Grayson is super competitive, almost to a fault.
- 45:00SPEAKER_07: I've noticed that.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Yes, and like I feel and sometimes on the ice, he I feel like he's getting better the older he gets.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: But as a coach, like he has some coaches that has loved his fire and doesn't get upset if he you know is on the ice and he gets mad, but then he has other coaches that have been like nope.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: And so we're at a divide in the family because half of the family thinks that he has hurt his chances to move forward, the other half feels like if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen.
- 45:38SPEAKER_07: I'll I'll I'll I'll go first.
- 45:40SPEAKER_07: Okay, I love kids that want to compete because at the end of the day, we're playing hockey and we are competing.
- 45:50SPEAKER_07: Um, we're competing with ourselves, uh, getting better as players.
- 45:55SPEAKER_07: Uh, but ultimately we're competing as a team uh in practice so that when we play the games, the games are easy.
- 46:03SPEAKER_07: We really don't have to think we're just playing free.
- 46:07SPEAKER_07: Uh so I like the competitiveness.
- 46:09SPEAKER_07: The only caveat I would put to that is we don't want to let the other team see that maybe we're upset if things don't go our way.
- 46:22SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 46:22SPEAKER_07: Uh, because the other team will look at that and go, okay, that's fuel, that's fire right there.
- 46:29SPEAKER_07: Uh I'm interested to hear your thoughts, coach.
- 46:34SPEAKER_02: Compete is the first thing out of my mouth every season when I'm talking to our team.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I want to compete for every puck, I want to compete for every battle, I want to see kids who want to just, you know, want to win, uh, whether it's at if they're playing Chell on PlayStation or if they're playing trivia or if they're playing pickleball.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: That being said, one thing that I would pick up on is there was a comment that you made, Angel, about uh does this impede me or does it help me?
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: You know, this this you know, you know, showing the you know whether it's emotion or high compete.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: And I would say this um be yourself.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: If it's genuine, if it really, really upsets you, be yourself.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: However, I would also say if you are thinking about a loss today impacting next year, you're you're missing the forest or the trees.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Live in the moment, enjoy the moment, enjoy this journey that we're all on, because at the end of the day, you know the work ethic and the compete are gonna take Grace into the place that he's gonna be happiest at and he will be the most successful.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: And trying to do something or be something or project something to be to be something in the future sometimes takes your eye off the ball, or I should say for a goal, it takes your eye off the puck.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and you're not at your highest and best in the moment.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: And that's what matters most because uh you can enjoy something that hasn't happened yet, but you should you can enjoy the moment, even with you know, even if you're losing hockey, a hockey game, you know, next week you're still on the team, you're still with your friends, you're still playing hockey, enjoy that moment, be upset, be critical of yourself, or I should say, give yourself self-critique because you want to get better, but don't put yourself in a position where your your anger or disappointment or emotion is clouding what what we're really doing here, and that is trying to enjoy ourselves, have a heck of a lot of fun, build lasting memories, have fun, and and the rest will the rest will take care of itself.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: Thanks.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: But uh again, I'm gonna echo Drew.
- 48:55SPEAKER_02: Thank you both for sharing uh your evenings with us tonight, and uh be sure to uh tell all your friends about too many men on the mic.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: Good luck with the rest of the season.
- 49:06SPEAKER_02: I say that as parents to parents, enjoy enjoy it as well.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: Um, we have had two boys that have gone through this journey and are now at a different phase where we are less and less involved.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's fun too.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: But enjoy the enjoy the journey as it happens right now.
- 49:22SPEAKER_07: And I want to see uh I want to hear uh Cooper at the band.
- 49:25SPEAKER_07: I think I I want to check this out.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: So, thought process here.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: We could do some Chicago songs because Cooper's in the band.
- 49:32SPEAKER_07: If Cooper's in the band, I I can see a too many men on the mic acoustic duo show with Cooper playing.
- 49:37SPEAKER_09: Absolutely.
- 49:38SPEAKER_09: Let's make it happen.
- 49:39SPEAKER_09: Let's make it happen.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 49:41SPEAKER_07: Nicole and Angel, thanks so much for taking time tonight.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: Enjoy the rest of the evening.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: Good luck the rest of the season.
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: Thank you, you too.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: Bye now.
- 49:47unknown: Bye.
- 49:49SPEAKER_07: We spend a lot of time and cold rinks talking about hockey, but when the season winds down or your kid needs a day off the ice, padell and pickle is where our family's been heading.

- 52:17SPEAKER_08: Too kind, too kind.
- 52:19SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 52:20SPEAKER_08: So I believe we are two and two in trivia.
- 52:24SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew, I believe, has won the last two.
- 52:26SPEAKER_08: So Coach Jared's got a little bit, he's gotta stop the streak.
- 52:31SPEAKER_08: We have our rubber match uh coming here.
- 52:34SPEAKER_08: So I asked you for your birth years, right?
- 52:37SPEAKER_08: And I apologize for doxing the age old of uh both of you.
- 52:42SPEAKER_07: Hey, that's wisdom, buddy.
- 52:44SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew was born in 1972, and Coach Jared was born 76.
- 52:54SPEAKER_08: Have has 50 hit yet, or are you still 49?
- 52:57SPEAKER_08: Yes, yes, 50 hit.
- 52:59SPEAKER_08: Is that a tough day?
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: No.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: Oh because I the person at the at the coffee shop was like, you know, I got a free coffee.
- 53:07SPEAKER_02: It's my birthday.
- 53:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah, because you because you're a senior now.
- 53:10SPEAKER_08: She thought it was 35.
- 53:11SPEAKER_08: What are you talking about?
- 53:12SPEAKER_08: Senior discount.
- 53:14SPEAKER_08: Okay, so the trivia today will be set in your birth years.
- 53:21SPEAKER_08: I have created them for the 1971 to 1972 season and the 1975 to 1976 NHL season.
- 53:31SPEAKER_08: So, Coach Drew, you are our defending champion.
- 53:35SPEAKER_08: So, my question to you: who won the 1972 Stanley Cup?
- 53:44SPEAKER_07: 72.
- 53:47SPEAKER_07: Uh, one I don't know, but I'm gonna make an educated guess.
- 53:51SPEAKER_07: And it was before the Broad Street Bullies, so it was before the Flyers.
- 53:58SPEAKER_07: Um which makes me think it very well could have been the Montreal Canadians.
- 54:11SPEAKER_08: Won the 1972 Stanley Cup.
- 54:14SPEAKER_08: All right, Coach Jared.
- 54:16SPEAKER_08: Same question for you.
- 54:18SPEAKER_08: Who won the 1976 Stanley Cup?
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: So 75-76 season.
- 54:26SPEAKER_08: That would be correct.
- 54:28SPEAKER_08: Philadelphia Flyers.
- 54:32SPEAKER_08: Montreal Canadians.
- 54:33SPEAKER_08: This is the Montreal Canadians.
- 54:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 54:35SPEAKER_08: So Coach Drew gave you the answer.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: At least it's not like last week where we had the same answer for three questions in a row.
- 54:44SPEAKER_08: That was good.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: If you do say so yourself, right?
- 54:47SPEAKER_08: That was good.
- 54:50SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 54:52SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew, your question is who led the NHL in points during the 1971-1972 regular season?
- 55:05SPEAKER_08: Ooh, 71-72 season points.
- 55:09SPEAKER_08: Here, you know what?
- 55:10SPEAKER_08: To make this a little easier for both of you, I'm gonna ask both of you this question for your years.
- 55:16SPEAKER_08: I will give you the team that the man was playing for at this time, which was let me uh look him up.
- 55:29SPEAKER_08: He, this man was playing for the Boston Bruins at the time.
- 55:35SPEAKER_08: The Stanley Cup champions of this season.
- 55:38SPEAKER_08: He is Canadian and he won the 1976 gold medal in the Canada Cup.
- 55:46SPEAKER_08: What you got for me?
- 55:48SPEAKER_08: 76 gold medal in the Bruins of 1971-72.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Bobby Orr.
- 56:04SPEAKER_08: Would be one Phil Esposito.
- 56:10SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 56:11SPEAKER_08: I knew this was gonna be a hard one.
- 56:13SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared, 1975, 1976, leading point scorer, and he played for he played for the Montreal Canadians.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Well, that was a great year for music.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: That was uh Frampton comes alive.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Much of which was uh was was recorded at Kobo Hall.
- 56:42SPEAKER_06: Do you feel like we do?
- 56:47SPEAKER_02: Um I would say 7576 Gila Fleur.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Ghee.
- 56:56SPEAKER_09: Is it Gila Fleur?
- 56:58SPEAKER_09: La Fleur means the flower.
- 57:00SPEAKER_09: La Fleur means the I know he came in the hesitation.
- 57:04SPEAKER_07: The hesitation, the great hesitation, the hesitation.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: All right, the flower.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: A tough flower, like a snap or prank or a Venus Fly trap.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: He's tough.
- 57:16SPEAKER_08: All right, coach Drew.
- 57:19SPEAKER_08: Yo, which defenseman won the 1971 to 1972 Heart Trophy as NHL MVP?
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Bobby Ort eight Norrises basically in a row.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: And if you're Brad Park, you finished runner-up six of those years.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: Just brutal.
- 57:43SPEAKER_08: Just brutal.
- 57:44SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared.
- 57:46SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 57:46SPEAKER_08: Same question for you.
- 57:47SPEAKER_08: Who won the 1975-76 Heart Trophy?
- 57:52SPEAKER_08: The Heart?
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: I mean.
- 58:06SPEAKER_08: It was.
- 58:07SPEAKER_08: Oh, now I lost it.
- 58:09SPEAKER_08: Was it Ken Dryden?
- 58:10SPEAKER_08: No, it was Bobby Clark.
- 58:12SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 58:14SPEAKER_08: That makes sense.
- 58:15unknown: That makes sense.
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: So we're tied 1-1 right now.
- 58:17SPEAKER_08: Tide 1-1.
- 58:19SPEAKER_08: A few more questions from these years.
- 58:22SPEAKER_08: Um.
- 58:26SPEAKER_08: Hmm.
- 58:27SPEAKER_08: Where do I want to go?
- 58:30SPEAKER_08: All right, Coach Drew.
- 58:33SPEAKER_08: Who led the NHL and goals in the 1971-72 season?
- 58:45SPEAKER_07: Esposito.
- 58:48SPEAKER_07: It's gotta be right.
- 58:51SPEAKER_08: Sorry, my thing's not loading.
- 58:53SPEAKER_08: Oh my god.
- 58:54SPEAKER_08: ChatGBT doesn't know what he's doing.
- 58:56SPEAKER_08: One second! I don't have the answer.
- 58:58SPEAKER_08: It messed up.
- 58:59SPEAKER_08: What?
- 59:00SPEAKER_08: One second, one second, one second, one second, one second.
- 59:02SPEAKER_08: I'm pretty sure Phil Esposito had like 70 goals in 1970, 71, 72.
- 59:13SPEAKER_08: 76 goals.
- 59:14SPEAKER_08: ChatGBT told me what he had.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: 76.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: He used to say it doesn't matter what they look like.
- 59:21SPEAKER_02: They don't count how they look, they just count them.
- 59:23SPEAKER_07: And that was before they curved the stick, right?
- 59:25SPEAKER_07: Or did I have Bobby Hull curved his stick?
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: I think Bobby Hull curved his stick already, but it was like they weren't.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: In fact, back then they were a little bit over the quarter.
- 59:34SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 59:35SPEAKER_02: Those things are bananas.
- 59:37SPEAKER_08: All right, we got 2-1.
- 59:39SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared.
- 59:41SPEAKER_08: Same question for you.
- 59:42SPEAKER_08: Who led the NHL in regular season goals?
- 59:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was G.
- 59:51SPEAKER_02: Lafleur.
- 59:54unknown: Not.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: It was Bobby Clark?
- 59:57SPEAKER_02: Couldn't have been Bobby Clark.
- 59:59SPEAKER_08: Oh, Reggie.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_08: Reggie Leach.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_02: From the Rangers, right?
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: I think he was on the Rangers.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the Rangers.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_08: Dude, that's just our 2-2.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_08: We are going to move on from your birth years, and we are going to go to my birth year, the 2002-2003 NHL season.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_08: Holy cow.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_08: I'm trying to figure out.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_08: I want to make it even.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_08: Do not tell me the runner-up.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_08: Who won the 2002 to 2003 Stanley Cup final?
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_08: 0203?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: 0203.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_08: Coach.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_08: I'm sorry.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_08: Coach Drew.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Coach Drew's answering this.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_07: 0203, Stanley Cup champion.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_08: If he doesn't know, Coach Jared can steal.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_07: 0203 or 0102?
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_08: 0203.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_08: I was born in 03.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_07: The Carolina Hurricanes.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_07: 0203?
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: They won an 06.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_07: Oh, it was 06.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_07: Because Detroit was 2002.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: Coach Jared has a chance to steal.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: I I know.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: So 0203 was the Anaheim Ducks.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: It was the New Jersey Devils.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: The Devils.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_02: Devils.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: That's when uh Claude Lemieux went back and Scotty Gomez was there.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: He was the main, he was like the main dude there.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: Little ball of hate.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_02: Little ball of hate.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_08: Him and Pat Verbeek.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_08: Him and Pat Verbique, yeah.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_08: Okay, Coach Drew.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_08: Hmm.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_11: We're bad at trivia tonight, by the way.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_08: Yeah, not great.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_11: Usually we're much better than this.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_08: All right, Coach Drew.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_08: Which team finished the NHL season in 2002, 2003 with the most points?
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_07: Which team finished with the most points?
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna say the Detroit Red Wings.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_08: It was the Ottawa Senators.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_08: Alfred's in.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that was a good squad.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_08: That was a good squad.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_08: Coach Jared, this is our final question.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_08: If you get it, you win.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_08: I'm trying to figure out where I want to go here.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_08: Are you gonna go my way?
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_08: You mentioned this team.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_08: Which team did the Anaheim Mighty Ducks defeat in the Western Conference Final to make their first Stanley Cup final?
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_08: For the win.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_08: For the win O two O three.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_08: The Minnesota Wild.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: What Anaheim might the Minnesota Wild were in the Western Conference Finals in O two O three?
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, I did not I I did not know that.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_08: All right, here is our tiebreaker question.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_08: How many teams were in the NHL in two thousand two, two thousand three?
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_08: I want them both to be taxed today.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_02: Shoot, hang on, hang on, hang on.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to hang on.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_08: We have a winner.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_08: Exactly on the dot.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_08: There had not been expansion from this point on until the Vegas Golden Knights were added as the 31st team, and the Seattle Kraken were added as the 32nd team.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_08: The still defending too many men on the mic.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_08: Trivia champion is Coach Drew.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_08: 30 teams.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_08: But there were 30, and they played 82 games.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_08: I believe it was the Anaheim Mighty Ducks who were the ones that were added close to that date.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_08: And you would have known that if you thought about your other questions that you had.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_07: I I I like the flavor of the trivia this this week, the 72 and 76.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_07: It was it was tough.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_07: I thought it sucks.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_07: I just have to.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_02: I thought it was terrible.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_02: Three in a row.
