Latest / Scripture Central / Christ’s Emancipation Of New Testament Women: New Testament with Lynne Wilson (Come, Follow Me)
Transcript
- 0:00Hello, my name is Lynn Hilton Wilson and I'm part of the
- 0:02Scripture Central team. Today I'm talking about a
- 0:06subject that is not part of the come follow me specifically.
- 0:10But generally I want to take a step back and look at the women
- 0:15in the New Testament. I want to take a step back and
- 0:18look how Christ empowered them. And if we know another about
- 0:22their culture, we see this emancipation.
- 0:26And I've talked about this every week with come follow me.
- 0:29But I've decided to divide it into two lessons, The first one
- 0:33on the Gospels, the women there, and the second one on Paul and
- 0:37Peter and how they were treated in the Apostolic Church, how
- 0:42they treated women. And was there the same evidence
- 0:46there of following Christ, or were they just following their
- 0:49culture? So this small section I feel
- 0:53will help us to be able to see the Scriptures with the lens of
- 0:57history that will bring them more meaningfully to life.
- 1:01Just as a reminder, the New Testament covers the entire
- 1:03Roman Empire. The Gospels mainly deal with the
- 1:07area of that we now refer to as Israel.
- 1:10But there were Jews and missionary work scattered all
- 1:13over the Roman Empire. So by the time those people are
- 1:16writing out the Gospels, they know the Gospel has been
- 1:20spreading around the Empire. This Second Temple period had a
- 1:24lot of historical challenges, not only in the Judaic world but
- 1:28in the Greco Roman world. And they all affected what
- 1:31Christ taught, what the apostles taught, and what is written in
- 1:34the text. Some of those things are written
- 1:37by a great historian named Josephus.
- 1:41He's not just a historian, he was also a priest.
- 1:45He worked in the temple. He had seen the veil.
- 1:47He knew those things. He wasn't the high priest.
- 1:49He's just a priest. But he also became a general for
- 1:52the armies. He often quotes scripture and
- 1:56says for the scripture says, but it's not in our scriptures.
- 1:59These are things that were part of the traditions of the Jews.
- 2:02A woman is inferior to her husband in all things.
- 2:07Making matters worse than that, they blame Eve for all the
- 2:10source of sin. This is written by Ben Serra,
- 2:12who is a very popular writer at about 150 years before the Lord
- 2:16and it was used as some people even accepted him as scripture
- 2:20at the time of the Lord. And he said of the woman came
- 2:23the beginning of sin, and to her we all die.
- 2:26And much of his writing denounces women as not just the
- 2:31sources of sin, but the If you had contact with a woman, you're
- 2:35going to have sin. But all of this cultural
- 2:38background, Jesus changed, you know, as forcefully as he
- 2:42cleansed the temple. Christ changed this culture.
- 2:45I think we all talk about him healing the blind and and and
- 2:49bringing the restoring the higher priesthood.
- 2:51But as dramatically as he cleansed the temple, Christ
- 2:55changed the relationship between men and women, change the family
- 2:58dynamics. He speaks to women.
- 3:00He heals women. He defends women.
- 3:04He named. We have their names.
- 3:06We have 45 named women in the New Testament.
- 3:08We have 94 unnamed women. And so I'd like to just give you
- 3:11a few examples of the culture, the culture of segregation, the
- 3:15culture of communication, the culture of witness, so we can
- 3:18see more clearly how Christ made all these changes.
- 3:22Because Christ, with every example of his sermons and his
- 3:27miracles, he is attacking something in that community.
- 3:31And unless we know the community, we think, oh, he's
- 3:33such a nice guy, but our Savior did a lot of offensive things to
- 3:38that culture. For example, at the end of the
- 3:41Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament, we have 3
- 3:44or 400 years here that is referred to as the
- 3:46intertestamental period. And during this time the Judaic
- 3:51culture became more and more segregated.
- 3:54Now in the Old Testament, men and women are talking together,
- 3:57they have active lives together. But these things changed during
- 4:01this time. In fact, we read in the Mishnah
- 4:04that they wanted to the the Jewish leaders wanted to build a
- 4:08fence around the law. They were worried that they had
- 4:11been taken out of their promised land to Babylon, Syria, all
- 4:15these things because they didn't obey the law.
- 4:17So they want to protect the law. So they start establishing these
- 4:20extra laws. They call them the 10,000 oral
- 4:23laws. They're called oral laws because
- 4:26they think Moses actually gave them, but Moses did not give
- 4:31them. They just said they were not
- 4:32written down until this time. But when you hear what they are,
- 4:34when you go read them and study them, you say, Moses never said
- 4:37this, but they became what Christ referred to as the
- 4:40traditions of the Jews. And I'll give you some examples
- 4:44of how these Oral Laws affected people like Philo, anybody in
- 4:49the time, in the Jews of the time, how they affected their
- 4:52culture. I'll read first of all from a
- 4:54group of Jews that lived outside of the Judaic world.
- 4:58These are in the country of northern Egypt, in a town, a
- 5:04city of Alexandria. Marketplaces and council halls,
- 5:08law courts and gatherings, meetings of large numbers of
- 5:11people who were assembled in the open air, life full of scope, of
- 5:15discussion and action. All these are suitable to men
- 5:19both in war and in peace. The women are best suited to the
- 5:24indoor life, which never strays from the house.
- 5:30A woman, then, should not be a busy body meddling with matters
- 5:32outside of her household concerns, but should seek a life
- 5:36of seclusion. So not only did the Jews in the
- 5:41area around Jerusalem and Galilee have these laws, but we
- 5:44see them scattered everywhere. Remember, about 10% of the Roman
- 5:48Empire are filled with Israelites, and Alexandria is
- 5:51one of these cities where there was a lot of of people that
- 5:54called themselves Jews, but they're actually from all the
- 5:56tribes of Israel that are just living there.
- 5:58And this was what Philo recorded at the time of the Lord.
- 6:02Philo is writing at this very time of Paul and Peter and the
- 6:05Savior's life. Another statement, another good
- 6:08quote here. Women were always kept in
- 6:11seclusion and did not even appear at the house door, and
- 6:15their unmarried daughters were limited to the women's quarters.
- 6:20Women, for modesty sake, shunned the eyes of men, even their
- 6:26closest relatives. So most people at this time, if
- 6:30you are living in the Palestine area, are are peasants.
- 6:34They're living in small homes. You know, a room that's 14 by 16
- 6:38feet or something like that. You know you don't have room for
- 6:41segregation, but if you have money, if you have wealth, you
- 6:45have a woman's quarters of the house and a men's quarters of
- 6:48the house and archaeology has shown that.
- 6:51But this idea that most of the people in the area of the modern
- 6:55day Israel where peasants is confirmed by archaeologists and
- 6:59anthropologists and we do find statements even in the Mishnah
- 7:02that's written after the time of the Lord.
- 7:04But referring back to this time, that said a woman that returned
- 7:07from the harvest or from olive picking or from the vintage, so
- 7:11either women were servants or slaves or during the harvest
- 7:14season, a poor farmer has to call all of his family out to
- 7:17help do that harvest. You know, he's not going to let
- 7:19half of the harvest die because he didn't have enough workers.
- 7:21He's going to say, come on out, You got it, You got to help me.
- 7:25But in the wealthy, we do see a segregation not only of the
- 7:28homes, but in the public life, in the worship, in the
- 7:32synagogues. The women were allowed in at the
- 7:35time of the New Testament, that they were to stay over in one
- 7:37little corner and they were to be silenced, unseen and unheard.
- 7:41They were completely veiled. If they ever left their house
- 7:43veiled head to toe, not even their fingertips and their
- 7:46toenails could be seen. Now, after the time of the New
- 7:49Testament, is when they start building the lattice barriers
- 7:52with a second entrance for women to come in a second door and to
- 7:55be behind this barrier in the temple.
- 7:58I was fascinated that in the New Testament Mary says it is said
- 8:02of Mary in chapter two of Luke that they went to the temple
- 8:06every year. Well, the Mishnah says women
- 8:08don't have to go to the temple, only men have to go to the
- 8:10temple. And children who can walk up
- 8:12this hill, boys who can walk up the hill.
- 8:15But Mary went every year. So I would just like to
- 8:18encourage us to realize there's a whole spectrum of people.
- 8:22The records that I'm reading from are what we have left from
- 8:25the wealthy educated people who were writing things down and
- 8:30saved. So probably the fair sake
- 8:32tradition had more writings down than the poor farmers.
- 8:36So let's just keep that in mind as we read this because I know
- 8:40there are many good Jews who are not misogynist.
- 8:44But at the temple you've got your court of the gentile where
- 8:46everyone is and then the inner courtyard.
- 8:49Once you go into the first inner courtyard, it's called the Court
- 8:51of the Women. So I assume this was filled with
- 8:53women. But by the time of the New
- 8:55Testament, according to our writings, all the women were
- 8:58secluded over to 1 little corner.
- 9:00It's the corner right by where the widow's might was placed,
- 9:05where the widow went. It's it's where the treasury is.
- 9:07And the women were to be there unseen and unheard.
- 9:11Now the men and were talked in the court of the women and the
- 9:14and the young boys were there with lots of lively discussions.
- 9:17And our savior has many of his discussions there in the court
- 9:20of the women. But the women were always over
- 9:21in this one little corner. Josephus continues on in this
- 9:24idea of segregation. The anomaly of woman is worked
- 9:28out by assigning her to a man's domain.
- 9:30Women are sanctified through the deeds of men.
- 9:35Isn't this an interesting thing? But Christ comes and changes
- 9:40that. You know all these ideas he not
- 9:42remember. Matthew says not only did he
- 9:44feed 500 men, but there were women and children that came.
- 9:48This was a novelty that was not to be done in that culture.
- 9:54That's why Matthew mentions it. And with the feeding of the
- 9:564000, Matthew also mentions it. Christ also refuted those who
- 10:00removed children. He had them come.
- 10:02He encouraged women to stay and to learn.
- 10:04He not only encouraged them to come, but he even healed them
- 10:08when they were out in public where they shouldn't have been.
- 10:10You know, let's talk about this one.
- 10:12Healing, the healing of the woman who had the issue of
- 10:15blood. Now we look at the law of Moses
- 10:17and we're told in Exodus and Deuteronomy and Ezekiel that if
- 10:21if if you are unclean, you need to stay away from people.
- 10:24They don't understand the germ theory, but they do know
- 10:26contagiousness and they don't know what everything is.
- 10:30But if you're in a state of being unclean and there's a
- 10:33whole list of things that are unclean, please stay away from
- 10:36people. And we're told that she has been
- 10:40bleeding for 12 years. She is unclean in the category
- 10:46of what they felt was unhealthy, and so she was not to be out in
- 10:51public. She is breaking the law to be
- 10:53there. And remember, Jesus has just
- 10:54left the synagogue in Capernaum to go down and heal Jarius, the
- 10:59leader of the synagogue's daughter.
- 11:02And in route on these narrow little streets of this busy,
- 11:05bustling city, this woman sneaks out in a crowd of men to touch a
- 11:11very specific part of the Lord's cloak, where the knots are in
- 11:16the corner, where the covenant representing the covenant.
- 11:20And she is healed immediately. And it says in the text, the
- 11:23woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and
- 11:27fell to his at his feet. And in the presence of all the
- 11:30people she told why she had touched him and how she had been
- 11:35instantly healed. This tells us so much about this
- 11:39woman. She could have just run away.
- 11:41There was a crowd of people during all the commotion of
- 11:43Christ asking she could have just slipped out, but she wanted
- 11:47to testify of Christ. And she does.
- 11:50She raises her voice. She honors him and then Christ
- 11:54honors her. He says in the King James, thy
- 11:57faith hath made thee whole. He doesn't say you're right, I'm
- 12:01the healer. You got it, woman.
- 12:03He doesn't say that I love the ABT.
- 12:05Translation. He says your faith has brought
- 12:09you salvation. Now this is very important
- 12:12because in that day and age, every time there was a physical
- 12:15element, it was blamed on a sin. And if you were blind, it was
- 12:20the mother's fault, or if you were, or if you were, or if you
- 12:23were or if you were, every physical ailment is tied to a
- 12:26sin. And so Christ says your faith,
- 12:29he's not just healing her inside.
- 12:31By saying this at the end, he is healing her physically and
- 12:35spiritually and emotionally. It's a fabulous story.
- 12:39Let's talk about the Greco Roman background of communication and
- 12:43the Judaic. Here's Ben Serra.
- 12:46This is that rabbi the in Jerusalem that was almost
- 12:51equivalent with scripture. It's it's recorded now in our
- 12:54you can read Ben Serra if you'd like.
- 12:55In the apocryphal literature, better is the iniquity of a man
- 12:59than a woman doing a good turn and a woman bringing shame and
- 13:03reproach. This is they just have
- 13:07horrendous ideas about woman. They continue on talk not much
- 13:12with womankind. They said this of a man's own
- 13:15wife. How much more?
- 13:17His fellow's wife. So you're not even supposed to
- 13:19be talking to your own wife. Here's Ecclesiastes, another
- 13:22book that's from this time period, very well known.
- 13:26A silent wife is a gift from the Lord.
- 13:28Her restraint is more than money can buy.
- 13:31This is not the book from the Old Testament.
- 13:34But this idea that a woman should never speak was what they
- 13:38defined as a good woman. I'll give you some more examples
- 13:41from the Mishnah and the Talmud. Now these are written after the
- 13:44fact, looking back on this time recording down what the rabbis
- 13:48taught at the time of the Second Temple.
- 13:52He that talks much with womankind, brings evil upon
- 13:55himself and neglects the study of the law, and at last will
- 14:01inherit Gehenna or which is hell.
- 14:03So if you're going to talk to a woman, you're wasting your time.
- 14:07And if you're going to talk to a woman, you're going to go to
- 14:09hell. Here's another one.
- 14:11Now, this is written much later than the time of Christ, but
- 14:15it's supposedly Looking back, we have not found that the Almighty
- 14:19spoke to a woman except Sarah, so why should we now?
- 14:23One reason that they had to have arranged marriages is because
- 14:28there was no communication between these genders.
- 14:31Arranged marriages happened. You know, the girls have to be
- 14:33before they're 12 1/2 the the average age for a man was about
- 14:3818. But if you're not married and a
- 14:39woman by 20 or a man by 25, you've got to pay extra taxes.
- 14:43And as soon as you're married, the young girl has to call her
- 14:46husband. Master, only a male can call the
- 14:50divorce, and you can divorce someone just by saying it.
- 14:53I divorce you. I divorce you.
- 14:54I divorce you and writing it out.
- 14:56And that's good enough. We have records that say the
- 14:58only way a woman can receive her freedom is through widowhood.
- 15:04But that was even changed by Alexander, not Alexander.
- 15:07That was changed by Cesar Augustus, who says if a woman
- 15:11has not borne three children and she is still of child bearing
- 15:14age and she is a widow, she has two years to get divorced or
- 15:18she's got to pay higher taxes. There were fewer divorces in the
- 15:21Judaic world, but we read a Judaic marriage as being stifled
- 15:27with fear and anxiety and mistrust and imitation.
- 15:31Their their relationship was completely stunted as the woman
- 15:34had to comply with every wish of her husband because if he wanted
- 15:38to divorce her, she did not get to keep her children and she was
- 15:41left in abject poverty. But Christ came and changed all
- 15:47of this. When he spoke about divorce, He
- 15:50is denying what their version of it was.
- 15:54He is aware of women's needs all the time, and he talks to them
- 15:57even on his way to his cross. Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not
- 16:01for me, this is Luke 23, but weep for yourselves and for your
- 16:05children. It's verse 28.
- 16:08Remember the Samaritan woman, the well, this is the longest
- 16:11conversation that we have from the Lord in the entire New
- 16:14Testament, and let's just start looking at this one.
- 16:17So this woman is is going way out of her way and she is coming
- 16:21way. You know there's archaeologists
- 16:23have found a, a, a well very close to the town.
- 16:27It says that she's coming in the hot middle of the day at noon.
- 16:30She's coming a a mile out of town to come to Jacob's.
- 16:33Well, she's probably trying to be away from people.
- 16:36I don't, I don't know. But she she's making some
- 16:39unusual behaviors. We have to sort of connect the
- 16:42dots here so that when she sees the Lord talking to her, the
- 16:45first thing she says is in John Chapter 4, verse 9.
- 16:49How? Who is it that thou, being a
- 16:51Jew, ask us a drink of me, which am a woman?
- 16:57Now, we often emphasize the fact that this is a Samaritan, but
- 17:01twice in this text of John, he emphasizes that Jewish men did
- 17:06not talk to women. Continuing on in verse 10, the
- 17:09Lord tries to lead her, tries to get her out of her area, just
- 17:14like He did with Nicodemus in the chapter before.
- 17:17But Nicodemus came at night, and Nicodemus couldn't follow him.
- 17:20You know, he was Nicodemus was a leader of the Jew.
- 17:21He was the antithesis of this woman.
- 17:24You know, he was a righteous, educated male who came at night
- 17:28and in darkness, and he left in darkness.
- 17:31So he's trying to teach this woman who comes in the in the
- 17:34greatest light of the day. He said, if thou knewest the
- 17:37gift of God, this is verse 10 in whom it was that saith unto
- 17:41thee, give me drink, thou wouldst have asked of him that
- 17:45he would have given thee living water.
- 17:49You know, if this conversation goes and she doesn't follow him,
- 17:52and she realizes that he's a prophet when he prophecies, and
- 17:55when he tells her of her past and he says, I, she says, OK, if
- 17:58you're a prophet, where are we supposed to worship?
- 18:00Worship in Jerusalem are up here in Samaria on our mountain which
- 18:04the Jews had destroyed their temple 170 years before.
- 18:07And Jesus teaches her. He teaches a woman of how to
- 18:12worship. He says this is continuing on in
- 18:15verse 19. True worshippers shall worship
- 18:19the Father in spirit and in truth.
- 18:23And she says she follows him a little bit, followed her.
- 18:26And she she just doesn't understand.
- 18:28She's never able to completely understand him.
- 18:30And so she says, you know, I'm just going to wait for the
- 18:32Messiah to come. And in chapter 4, verse 26, he
- 18:36says, I that speak unto thee, am he?
- 18:39He testifies of his nature before this wicked woman.
- 18:42And then she does the most wonderful thing.
- 18:44She leaves her water pot behind to share the news.
- 18:48She leaves her cares of the world.
- 18:50You know, the water pot can be symbolic of of of her old
- 18:53traditions, her old ways or anything that was not of Christ.
- 19:00But now that she knows who he is, she leaves her old ways
- 19:04behind and runs into the town. And she shares with the people
- 19:08there in the city the news, the men come out, they talk to
- 19:12Jesus, they invite him back in the city.
- 19:13By this time the apostles had come back.
- 19:15And the apostles even said, what is Jesus doing talking to a
- 19:18woman? You know, it doesn't say it John
- 19:20Mayer or Samaria. It just says a woman, yeah,
- 19:23they're so puzzled. But Jesus includes the
- 19:25Samaritans. He talks and he establishes the
- 19:28first branch of Christianity here, as I mentioned earlier.
- 19:30And I come follow me all because of this great woman.
- 19:33So even though I've mentioned these stories before, I want to
- 19:36put them together in a packet so you can see Christ's
- 19:39emancipation of these women. One of the greatest examples of
- 19:42Christ communicating comes with the stories of Mary and Martha.
- 19:46Christ is in Bethany. This is Luke, chapter 10.
- 19:49You know the story, a busy dinner party.
- 19:52Martha's very active at work because we've got all these
- 19:55people coming along with the Lord that she's got to cook for.
- 19:58And so she goes to the head of the household.
- 20:00She's an upright Jewish woman. And she says, master, could you
- 20:03please get my sister to help me? I'm.
- 20:05I'm desperate. You know, we've we've still got
- 20:07to pluck the the feathers off the Turkey.
- 20:09You know, there's a lot of work to get a meal here.
- 20:12And the Lord corrects her and says Martha.
- 20:15Bartha, thou art careful and troubled about many things.
- 20:18But one thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen that good part.
- 20:24And then one thing that is needful is to come unto Christ
- 20:28to learn from him. He is not denouncing service.
- 20:31He is not denouncing anything of that nature.
- 20:33He is encouraging us to set our priorities.
- 20:37Put our Scripture study first, not our exercise.
- 20:41Put our time on our knees with the Lord first, not our jobs,
- 20:47our our studies or whatever it takes us from him.
- 20:50And then the last line is my favorite, chapter 10, verse 42.
- 20:54That which shall not be taken away from her.
- 20:57Do you remember in the culture at this time, a woman could own
- 21:00nothing if she was a girl? Every dime she earned, every
- 21:03well, every. They're not Dimes.
- 21:05But you know what I mean. Everything she earned was given
- 21:08to her guardian or her father, and then as a married woman,
- 21:12everything she earned or found or did was the property of her
- 21:16husband, or, if her husband had passed away, her oldest son.
- 21:20But women owned nothing, and so by Christ saying that which
- 21:26shall not be taken away from her, he's saying, your testimony
- 21:30of of me, your knowledge, your eternal understanding of who the
- 21:37Son of Man is, will never be taken from you.
- 21:40If you can hold on to this belief, it is a powerful
- 21:44conclusion to that story #3. Witnesses.
- 21:48Now, in the Greco Roman culture as well as the Judaic culture,
- 21:51women were not allowed to give a public witness.
- 21:54And in the Judaic world it was even more strict.
- 21:58They were not allowed to be a voice in the court of law and
- 22:01other people were not allowed as well.
- 22:02We talked about this earlier. The shepherds were not allowed.
- 22:04You know, there's people who are dishonest by trade that they
- 22:08weren't allowed to have a witness, and it describes in the
- 22:11mission as they were not allowed because of the levity and
- 22:14boldness of their sex. But we see changes.
- 22:17Christ comes and he commissions women over and over to be
- 22:22witnesses. We have Mary the Virgin, this
- 22:25young girl who is probably still in her early teens, who is
- 22:32commissioned to be a witness. We have Elizabeth.
- 22:35The priesthood holder is mute. He can't speak.
- 22:39Elizabeth, not only with her physical body but with the words
- 22:42of her mouth, testifies of Christ.
- 22:44She's actually called a priestess in the New Testament
- 22:47and because of this tradition of attacking every sin to a a
- 22:57physical handicap, Luke is very careful as a physician to say
- 23:02that Elizabeth was walking in all the commandments and
- 23:05ordinances of the Lord. Blameless.
- 23:07That's Luke chapter one, verse six.
- 23:09She was a righteous woman. And then, of course, we have the
- 23:12example of Anna, who's called a prophetess in the New Testament.
- 23:16She's been a widow for a long time.
- 23:18You know, she could be 100 years old if we don't know what year
- 23:21she got married. But you know, she is a very old
- 23:23woman and she is still working in the temple.
- 23:25So my hat's off to everybody who works in the temple for a long
- 23:28time. She's called a prophetess.
- 23:29She's allowed to see the Lord, and she prophecies there.
- 23:32We often quote Peter as his witness by saying, when the Lord
- 23:38said, will you also go away? And Peter answers in Matthew
- 23:411617, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
- 23:46But let us quote Martha's voice just as often, because the early
- 23:51Church of authors, you know, the the, the writers of John
- 23:55recorded it. The early Apostolic Church
- 23:58recorded these things. We need to write them into our
- 24:00hearts and also allow their witnesses to be heard.
- 24:04At the death of Lazarus, Martha is now out on the street waiting
- 24:08for the Lord. And when she sees the Lord, she
- 24:09says, if you would have been there, you could have healed my
- 24:11brother. And the Lord says, do you
- 24:14believe? And in John Chapter 11, verse
- 24:1627, she says, yeah, Lord, I believe that thou art the
- 24:22Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
- 24:26You know, he not only asks for their witness, but they record
- 24:32it, and it's there for us. Christ called women to testify,
- 24:36and they did, and it was recorded.
- 24:38And then we go to the tomb who is at the cross.
- 24:42Only women. And early the morning of Easter,
- 24:46the early morning on Sunday, the women are there.
- 24:49They're the ones who see angels. When Peter and John run to the
- 24:52tomb, do they see angels? No, the angels commissioned
- 24:55them, it says in Matthew 28, verse five and verse 7.
- 24:59The Angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye, for I
- 25:03know that you seek Jesus. Go quickly and tell His
- 25:07disciples that He has written. And of course our first witness
- 25:12is Mary of Magdala, and the Savior commands her to share
- 25:16that witness. Over and over.
- 25:18The Lord asks women to speak up. We have examples in the Gospels.
- 25:23We have examples in the early Apostolic Church, the writings
- 25:28that we know of as the Epistles. Women are constantly called.
- 25:32But if Christ emancipated women and children, why didn't he
- 25:38emancipate slaves? Why do we have all these
- 25:42examples from John the Baptist, even our Savior's parables all
- 25:46the way through Paul. He even returns a runaway slave
- 25:51Philemans to sign Philemon in omnibus in in that good book.
- 25:56Why? Why if if Christ liberates the
- 25:59family so that men and women can have unity?
- 26:03You know, I feel like Christ liberation was not just for
- 26:06women. It healed the marriages.
- 26:08You can't have a decent marriage if you call somebody master and
- 26:12you act like a slave. So this idea is very interesting
- 26:17to me. Why didn't he say anything
- 26:19against slavery? Well, it's very much a part of
- 26:23the Roman Empire. 1/3 of the Roman Empire were living in
- 26:27servitude. 1/2 of the major cities, not just Rome but
- 26:30Jerusalem, Alexandria, Antioch. 1/2 are in slavery.
- 26:35And the normal average middle class family across the Roman
- 26:40Empire had eight servants. There were so many slaves and
- 26:43servants that even servants had slaves.
- 26:47Even slaves owned a slave. If you didn't own a slave, you
- 26:50were in abject poverty. However, it was very different
- 26:54in the Judaic world. Remember, the law of Moses
- 26:57designates that you if you were a male and slave, you only had
- 27:01to serve seven years. And in the Greco Roman world,
- 27:04most provinces released every and once they turned 30.
- 27:08Now some of the provinces was not until they're 35, but once
- 27:11they were mature they then were given some money and some
- 27:14encouragement. You know, a donkey whatever and
- 27:17and sent out on their own. Now the book of Exodus explains
- 27:21though in chapter 21 that a if a man sell his daughter and I'll
- 27:26add or his wife because wives could be sold as well at this
- 27:29time to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the
- 27:35menservants do. So a female was not allowed to
- 27:38be released after seven years according to this verse in
- 27:41Exodus, because they became the property of their master and as
- 27:46the property of their master they became a concubine.
- 27:50They were to raise his seed, they were to bear his children
- 27:55and raise them. So she was not released because
- 27:58by being sold into slavery she was sold into being a concubine
- 28:05of the person that she was slaved to.
- 28:07The Jerusalem Talmud which is written after the fact, said Is
- 28:11there any difference between the acquisition of a wife and the
- 28:15acquisition of a slave? And at that time this author
- 28:19said no. I don't think everyone felt that
- 28:22way, but it is recorded here in the Talmud.
- 28:26Let's go to Luke chapter one, verse 38 when Mary is receiving
- 28:31the angelic visitation from Angel Gabriel the Great
- 28:34Enunciation and she says after the Angel explains her
- 28:38Commission she answers in verse 38.
- 28:41Behold the handmaiden of the Lord, be it unto me according to
- 28:46thy word. So let's just step back into her
- 28:49culture. She's not using the beautiful
- 28:52King James Worden handmaiden, she says.
- 28:55Now remember, she's a young girl.
- 28:56She hasn't been married, but she's already betrothed.
- 28:59So she's over 12 1/2 probably, but possibly under 12 1/2.
- 29:04So she's 12/13/14 years old. And she says to Angel Gabriel, I
- 29:10will be God's slave child, I will be His servant.
- 29:14I will bear his son. I will raise him.
- 29:18This is a powerful verse to understand the depth of Mary's
- 29:23understanding and her faith. Here's another example.
- 29:27Our Savior gives a parable in Matthew chapter 18, where a
- 29:32slave went out and found one of his own fellow slaves.
- 29:34You know, these just are all over the place.
- 29:36Do you remember John the Baptist has tells us everyone comes to
- 29:40him to hear and he gives advice to masters and he gives advice
- 29:44to slaves. He says masters be nice, slaves
- 29:46be obedient. You know why?
- 29:49This was just really puzzling to me.
- 29:52And in fact John the Baptist has asked are you the Messiah and do
- 29:55you remember what he says? He says, one mightier than I
- 29:59cometh, the latcheth of whose shoe I am not worthy to
- 30:03unloosen. We say I am not even worthy to
- 30:08be his slave. A slave did the foot care?
- 30:11Not a disciple. A disciple was able to help your
- 30:14master teacher, but he says I'm not even worthy to do the slaves
- 30:18work. Slave would have to untie the
- 30:21knot on that leather tongue in order to keep clean his shoe.
- 30:25This is a powerful image. And in fact if you were a master
- 30:29teacher and you had lots of disciples, you could volunteer
- 30:32as a disciple to do some of the slaves work.
- 30:34So you could spend more time with your master teacher if you
- 30:36wanted, 15 more minutes with your master teacher and say, can
- 30:39I come in and help you wash your faith and wash your hands that
- 30:43day. But you couldn't say, may I help
- 30:45you wash your feet because that was left for the slave child.
- 30:48You know, bring in the little girl, bring in the little boy,
- 30:50bring in your wife. You know that was left for the
- 30:53lowest of the low. A disciple could not do that.
- 30:55And that is why Peter goes crazy when the Lord tries to wash his
- 31:02feet. Never.
- 31:04You know, I talked about this before.
- 31:06Peter just cannot handle this. But Christ says, if I wash you
- 31:11not, thou hast no part of me. Why did Christ not get rid of
- 31:15slavery? Well, because he taught all
- 31:20during His ministry repeatedly, over and over again.
- 31:23Even the Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to
- 31:28minister. Continuing on Matthew chapter
- 31:3220, the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.
- 31:38Mark Chapter 10, verse 44. Whosoever you will be the
- 31:42chiefest shall be the servant of all.
- 31:47Christ is completely in favor of servitude.
- 31:53Luke, chapter 19. Thou good and faithful servant,
- 31:56because thou hast been faithful in very little, thou has
- 32:01authority over 10 cities. Do you remember this one?
- 32:04Matthew 23 Whosoever shall exalt himself, shall be abased, and
- 32:11whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
- 32:15So not only is Christ in favor of servitude, he is also not in
- 32:22favor of those who exalt themselves.
- 32:26He wants to bring them down. And in this era where the
- 32:30socioeconomic pyramid was so clear and the Greco Roman world,
- 32:33you've got your Caesar and then your senators, etcetera,
- 32:36etcetera, all the way down. And then in the Judaic world,
- 32:40you have your high priest on the top and then you have your chief
- 32:43priests and your Levites. And then you and you also have
- 32:46your Sanhedrin and and you had your teachers.
- 32:49And down in the lowest of the low are the women and the
- 32:52children. And Christ completely turns that
- 32:57culture upside down. As I repeated over and over
- 33:00again, Christ wants to teach masters how to serve.
- 33:03So Christ's emancipation of women and servitude is very
- 33:09different. He wants women to come up and be
- 33:13acknowledged and witnessed and speak and teach and learn.
- 33:16And he wants all masters to learn how to serve like the
- 33:20women and the children and the servants, and that we may all
- 33:24become exalted if we follow the path of our Savior that He set
- 33:29out. This is a very different look at
- 33:33the New Testament. And I hope as you continue your
- 33:36study right now in the New Testament, that you will be able
- 33:39to take this and allow it to percolate into your heart so
- 33:44that every cell in your body will realize that if we want to
- 33:48walk where Christ walked, if we want to do and become like our
- 33:52Savior, we need to serve. We need to share the ability to
- 33:59nurture. It's not who's who's sitting in
- 34:02this city is the Bishop. It's who's willing to be in the
- 34:05nursery. That's where Christ would be.
- 34:08I'm convinced that whoever is called, wherever you're called,
- 34:11if we do it as a meekservant, we will receive the Spirit of God
- 34:16to bless us. And one of the things that the
- 34:19Savior restored during His mission is the blessings of
- 34:23understanding, the need for all of us to serve each other.
- 34:28And I leave this with you. In the name of the suffering
- 34:31Servant, even Jesus Christ, Amen.
