- 0:00You have arrived. Welcome to the Aspy world.
- 0:04Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:07an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 0:11spectrum, your autism ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 0:19In this video I'm talking about 5 strange things that only
- 0:22autistic people experience. This is really interesting.
- 0:25All that's coming up. Hey guys, welcome back to the
- 0:27Aspy world. My name is Dan, so if you're new
- 0:29around here and you want to learn more about autism and
- 0:31ADHD, hit the subscribe button down below because I'm autistic
- 0:35and I make weekly videos all about this stuff.
- 0:38OK, so there are certain things that happen or that impact
- 0:43autistic individuals lives and only they seem to know about it.
- 0:47And I'll give you examples of all of these right now.
- 0:49So I'm going to cover five of them.
- 0:50And how I came around this was that after a certain amount of
- 0:53time, I realized that typical people didn't experience the
- 0:56things in the same way I did. And then I realized that all my
- 0:59autistic friends also experienced those things.
- 1:01So I was like, oh. OK, so.
- 1:04The first one I'm going to talk about is light flickering.
- 1:07Now I did a video on this and it went viral on TikTok and
- 1:10Instagram and I'll try and link it down below on an account here
- 1:13somewhere. And on that video, I take my
- 1:17iPhone and I'm in a store like a kids toy store and I'm showing
- 1:22you how the fluorescent lighting that is above us is flickering
- 1:26like a crazy, right? Like you'll see autistic people
- 1:28do this right when they're like looking up at lights and they're
- 1:31doing this because they're counter phasing the flicker.
- 1:34So if you, if a light's flickering and you do this, it
- 1:36stops the flicker impacting you. Why?
- 1:38Because it's very irritating. Imagine being in like a constant
- 1:41disco light always. It's horrible.
- 1:43Hence why like offices, doctors, surgeries, clinics, things like
- 1:46that, toy stores, department stores, grocery stores, they all
- 1:49have this like fluorescent light and it flickers at a certain
- 1:52frame rate. Now autistic individuals can see
- 1:54that frame rate a lot more clearly than non autistic
- 1:57people, so it doesn't bother typical people because they
- 2:00can't see it. But when you hold your phone
- 2:02camera up to those lights, you're able to see the flicker
- 2:06on the screen. And I'll try and insert a clip
- 2:08of that video here so you can see that.
- 2:13So the camera actually picks up the flicker.
- 2:15But that's why I can see in my eyes.
- 2:16I don't know why autistic people can see that.
- 2:18How cool and weird is that? Now, that was absolutely
- 2:21fascinating. And one of the most interesting
- 2:23things to to come of that when I put that video out, it was kind
- 2:25of like a test. Can you see this?
- 2:27If not, then your brain is wired neurosypically.
- 2:29But if you can see this in your brain is probably wired
- 2:32neurodivisionally. And hey, yeah, probably on the
- 2:34autism spectrum, which is really interesting.
- 2:36OK, so #2 is ultra sound hearing now not ultrasound like when
- 2:42you're doing like baby stuff or ultrasound doesn't like when you
- 2:46are an autistic individual, your hearing is attuned a lot more
- 2:52clearly to detail around you than the average person.
- 2:54And the example of this is when I was attending a talk by the
- 2:59Ass Bridges Association in my local area in a place called
- 3:03Slundered know because I live in North Wales.
- 3:05Be well, kind of, I live in North Wales and Canada.
- 3:07So yeah. And when I was in this meeting,
- 3:12it was packed, was sold out. So then they had to open the
- 3:14door of the cafe because like, you know, it was hot.
- 3:16It was summer. And so I was sitting there
- 3:18listening to this woman talk and people were walking past.
- 3:21Now, every time somebody walked past, I'm like, wow, so loud.
- 3:24Like I always look behind me because they just sounded so
- 3:26loud, you know, so annoying. And I noticed that the only
- 3:30people that were turning around are looking and noticing the
- 3:33noise were the autistic people, the other people who were there
- 3:35who were not autistic, who were just like really engaged in the
- 3:37speaker. And it's kind of interesting
- 3:39because that is a distraction that happens.
- 3:42And you'll see this a lot. Autistic individuals could be
- 3:44really distracted or you can't adore.
- 3:47They have an unshakable focus on something.
- 3:50It's it's so interesting how polar that thing is, but we all
- 3:53have really hypersensitivity to certain things and sound hearing
- 3:57super, super fast, super really like detailed is very, very
- 4:01interesting. Now before we go any further,
- 4:02guys, if you haven't already followed me on Instagram, TikTok
- 4:05and Facebook, make sure to hit the follow button because I'm
- 4:08posting videos on here absolutely every single day
- 4:10constantly. It's amazing.
- 4:11I love posting content and you guys are awesome.
- 4:13So have you experienced this so far?
- 4:16Have you experienced the light flicker?
- 4:18Have you experienced the sound? I want to know.
- 4:20Drop a comment down below because you could be autistic
- 4:22and not even know it. Let's open this discussion.
- 4:25OK, so #3 is clothing tags don't just hurt because a lot of
- 4:31people be like, Oh yeah, well, it seems on clothing and
- 4:33clothing tags in, you know, in trousers or underpants or on
- 4:37T-shirts that interests everybody's neck.
- 4:39And you're absolutely right, it does irritate us.
- 4:41But actually what, what it does, it hurts us on an emotional pain
- 4:45level. So we don't just feel it like a
- 4:47pain, like, oh, it's annoying. We feel it, oh, intensely
- 4:51internally. It's almost like an orca
- 4:53feeling. It's kind of like being
- 4:54submerged in ice cold water. Imagine how uncomfortable that
- 4:57would feel, right? And that's what that feeling is.
- 4:59It's not just a feeling of like, oh, a sharp thing scratching
- 5:01your neck. It's an irritation that impacts
- 5:04your entire higher beingness. So you go from being just like,
- 5:07Hey, I'm going to put on a T-shirt, poop and then be like,
- 5:10ah, this T-shirt is making me emotionally unstable.
- 5:14You know, it's making me completely freak out.
- 5:16It's it's, it's upsetting. It's, it's just disturbing my
- 5:20whole reality right now. And that's really, really
- 5:23interesting. That's why a lot of like
- 5:24clothing makes up for autistic individuals don't have tags on
- 5:27them, which is really, really amazing.
- 5:29Now this top, I think I got this from, I don't know, Tesco, which
- 5:32is like my local Walmart type of store.
- 5:35They sell clothes. I think I got it from there and
- 5:36this doesn't have tags on it. So all the clothes I buy either
- 5:39pull the tags off or I buy them without tags on the back, which
- 5:42is so good. One of those annoying places for
- 5:44tags is inside here and this scene here and I cut them all
- 5:46off. I'm like, it's horrible.
- 5:48It's so annoying. But that is something that
- 5:50autistic individuals feel deeply and they're the only people I've
- 5:53ever known to experience this. Now guys, if you are enjoying me
- 5:57and what I teach and all those things, did you know that I
- 6:00actually have a course for $27.00 called Autism Coping
- 6:04Secrets? It helps authentic individuals
- 6:06cope daily life skills. Now all you have to do if you're
- 6:08watching on Instagram is comment down below coping and I'll DM
- 6:12you a link to the course. But if you're interested in
- 6:14taking that course, like I said, it's only $27.00 and you can pay
- 6:17for it for instalments if you really want to.
- 6:18If you can click the link down in the description down below or
- 6:21you can just go to theaspworld.com/coping and
- 6:25you'll be able to find this course.
- 6:27I'm going to leave it here tagged.
- 6:28There's actually tag here on YouTube, watching on YouTube and
- 6:30actually click through and just tag the product that'll be down
- 6:32in the carousel and I'll tag it here somewhere in this video.
- 6:36OK, so #4 is the buzzing sound of electricity.
- 6:41Oh my goodness, the amount of people who cannot hear the
- 6:46buzzing sound of electricity definitely impacts my ability to
- 6:50understand that, hey, it's only autistic people who hear this.
- 6:55Now, like I was saying about the light flicker, those lights also
- 6:57buzz. It's like an electrical buzz.
- 6:59And we can hear that deeply, like super deep.
- 7:03And because of that, we as autistic individuals can notice
- 7:06that sounds kind of similar to the ultra hearing, the ultra
- 7:10kind of sound hearing, but it's on a different level.
- 7:12It's kind of like it's through electricity, like these lights
- 7:16are making a small sound and I can hear that sound and autistic
- 7:19people can hear the sound. It's so interesting if you're
- 7:21one of these people, if you, if you know exactly what I'm
- 7:23talking about, you have to get a zero thumbs up.
- 7:24I want to know where my ultra supersonic hearing peeps are
- 7:27because this is so interesting. And it's only autistic people I
- 7:30know that have ever commented the same thing as me, that they
- 7:33can hear the buzzing sound of lights.
- 7:35And sometimes with certain types of cabling, especially if I'm
- 7:37not on a train or if I'm somewhere I have like industrial
- 7:40cables. I, I can hear that sound like
- 7:42it's, it's like as if someone's got a vacuum cleaner next to me.
- 7:45Like it's like whoa, it's like super loud.
- 7:47Very, very interesting echo. So #5 This is super interesting.
- 7:51Now autistic individuals will feel physical pain from eye
- 7:57contact that's prolonged and certain words.
- 8:01This is so interesting, right? It's like a hypersensitivity,
- 8:04but to certain things. So if you hear a certain word,
- 8:07like if I hear certain words, it hurts.
- 8:09Like it's like pain. It's the only way I can describe
- 8:11it. It's not like somebody's punched
- 8:12me, but it's like a pain that I'd get if somebody had punched
- 8:15me, you know what I mean? Or like the prolonged eye
- 8:18contact becomes physically painful.
- 8:21It's like it starts hurting your body and being this, I can see
- 8:24you smiling right now and understanding exactly what I'm
- 8:25talking about. I, I, honestly, it's so
- 8:28interesting because there are so many things we can do to, to
- 8:31help overcome this. And I actually, I noticed this
- 8:33because because I'm talking in a, you know, so I coach 111 to
- 8:391A, coach autistic individuals 1 to one.
- 8:40They book with me. If you're interested, actually
- 8:42you can just go to the aspyworld.com/dan book and you
- 8:47can book a session with me. I could coach you one to one on
- 8:49a call. But when I'm coaching these
- 8:50people one to one, what seems to happen is I I realize certain
- 8:55trends that only autistic individuals experience in life.
- 8:57And this is where this video came from, which is fascinating,
- 8:59which is why the eye contact and certain nomenclature, when you
- 9:03hear those words, it gives you physical pain.
- 9:05Absolutely fantastic. I'll see you in the next video,
- 9:07guys. Peace.
- 9:08Hey guys, thank you so much for checking out this podcast.
