- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 19th of February. And good on you friend.
- 0:19You've tapped on play. You've said, come on Sean, let
- 0:21us read some of God's word together.
- 0:24And that is what we are going to do and we are going to continue
- 0:27reading in the new Living translation.
- 0:29I wonder how you're going with this friends?
- 0:32I well, I'm loving it. I'm just aware that a lot of
- 0:36people do tend to have their clear favourites when it comes
- 0:39to their own translations. We encountered a patient in our
- 0:43hospital recently who would not read anything other than the
- 0:48King James because to them that was the quintessential word of
- 0:51God. And reflecting on that, I think
- 0:54I might be the same. I'm becoming increasingly
- 0:57biassed toward this translation where you have these translators
- 1:01who've worked so hard to capture the intention of the original
- 1:05author and communicate that in a way that lands to our modern
- 1:10ears. And yes, this is probably not
- 1:12the best translation if you were going to be doing a biblical
- 1:15study, a scholarly pulling apart one verse word at a time.
- 1:20But as we are just reading through, wow, it is certainly
- 1:24doing the trick for me and I hope for you 2 friends.
- 1:27So as we go back, let us continue to hear the story of
- 1:32the kings of Israel and Judah as recorded in Second Kings Chapter
- 1:3811. When Atalia, the mother of King
- 1:51Ahaziah of Judah, learnt that her son was dead, she began to
- 1:56destroy the rest of the royal family.
- 1:58But Aaziah's sister Jehoshaba, the daughter of King Jehoram,
- 2:03took Aaziah's infant son Joash and stole him away from among
- 2:08the rest of the King's children who were about to be killed.
- 2:11So she put Joash and his nurse in a bedroom, and they hid him
- 2:16from Atalia so the child was not murdered.
- 2:20Joash remained hidden in the Temple of the Lord for six years
- 2:23while Atalia ruled over the land.
- 2:26In the seventh year of Atalia's reign, Jehoiada the priest
- 2:30summoned the commanders, the Carite mercenaries, and the
- 2:34palace guards to come to the Temple of the Lord.
- 2:37He made a solemn pact with them and made them swear an oath of
- 2:41loyalty there in the Lord's temple.
- 2:44Then he showed them the King's son.
- 2:46Jehoiada told them. This is what you must do.
- 2:51A third of you who are on duty on the Sabbath are to guard the
- 2:54royal palace itself. Another third of you are to
- 2:57stand guard at the Sur Gate, and the final third must stand guard
- 3:02behind the palace guard. These three groups will all
- 3:06guard the palace. The other two units who were off
- 3:09duty on the Sabbath must stand guard for the king at the Lord's
- 3:13temple. Form a bodyguard around the king
- 3:16and keep your weapons at hand. Kill anyone who tries to
- 3:20breakthrough. Stay with the king wherever he
- 3:23goes. So the commanders did everything
- 3:27as Jehoiada the priest ordered. The commanders took charge of
- 3:31the men reporting for duty that Sabbath, as well as those who
- 3:34were going off duty. They brought them all to
- 3:37Jehoiada the priest, and he supplied them with the Spears
- 3:41and small Shields that had once belonged to King David and were
- 3:45stored in the Temple of the Lord.
- 3:47The palace guards stationed themselves around the king with
- 3:50their weapons ready. They formed a line from the
- 3:53South side of the temple around to the north side, and all
- 3:56around the altar. Then Jehoiada brought out Joash,
- 4:01the King's son, placed a crown on his head, and presented him
- 4:05with the copy of God's Laws. They anointed him and proclaimed
- 4:09him king, and everyone clapped their hands and shouted.
- 4:13Long live the king. When Atalia heard the noise made
- 4:18by the palace guards and the people, she hurried to the
- 4:20Lord's temple to see what was happening.
- 4:23When she arrived, she saw the newly crowned king standing in
- 4:27his place of authority by the pillar, as was the custom at
- 4:30times of coronation. The commanders and trumpeters
- 4:34were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were
- 4:37rejoicing and blowing trumpets. When Natalia saw all this, she
- 4:42tore her clothes in despair and shouted treason.
- 4:46Treason. Then Jehoiada the priest,
- 4:51ordered the commanders who were in charge of the troops take her
- 4:54to the soldiers in front of the temple and killed anyone who
- 4:58tries to rescue her. For the priest had said she must
- 5:02not be killed in the temple of the Lord.
- 5:05So they seized her and LED her out to the gate where horses
- 5:09enter the palace grounds, and she was killed there.
- 5:14Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king
- 5:18and the people. That would be the Lord's people.
- 5:21He also made a covenant between the king and the people, and all
- 5:25the people of the land went over to the Temple of Bal and tore it
- 5:29down. They demolished the altars and
- 5:32smashed the idols to pieces, and they killed Matan, the priest of
- 5:36Bal, in front of the altars. Jehoiada, the priest, stationed
- 5:41guards at the Temple of the Lord.
- 5:43Then the commanders, the Karite mercenaries, the palace guards,
- 5:48and all the people of the land escorted the king from the
- 5:51Temple of the Lord. They went through the gates of
- 5:54the gods and into the palace. And the king took his seat on
- 5:59the royal throne. So all the people of the land
- 6:03rejoiced, and the city was peaceful because Italia had been
- 6:07killed at the King's palace. Joash was seven years old when
- 6:12he became king. Ah, Jesus, we see in this
- 6:24chapter that you are a God of surprises, that just when this
- 6:29nation thought that everything was falling to pieces under the
- 6:33cruel reign of this queen, that you had a solution hidden away
- 6:38in the temple in the form of this little boy growing up to
- 6:41replace her as king. My Lord, I wonder what part of
- 6:45our lives feel like an evil queen is ruling over it and
- 6:49there is no hope. Lord, help us lean in and trust
- 6:55in you. Trust in Your provision for us,
- 6:58even or particularly when we find ourselves in a dark valley,
- 7:02a confusing place where we just can't understand why we are
- 7:07there. Lord, give us hope that there is
- 7:11indeed a young king hidden in our temple, and that You will
- 7:17bring about this glorious, glorious restoration of the way
- 7:21things should be. And we know that Your
- 7:24restoration will come and we know that You have already
- 7:27earned that. So Lord, I just pray right now
- 7:31that you continue to nurture our faith, our faith in you and our
- 7:36faith in your victory over whatever challenging
- 7:39circumstance we face. You are indeed greater than he
- 7:44who is in this world. And any sinful plot or any time
- 7:49of despair will be short lived. And you, you alone, Lord, will
- 7:54be the victor. And amazingly, you take us by
- 7:58the hand, and you draw us along with you into your victory,
- 8:03which is for your glory and for our good.
- 8:06So we praise you, our wonderful, mighty King, and it's in your
- 8:12name that we pray Jesus, Amen.
