- 0:00Speaker 1: So what about this Christian ethics stuff? Glad you asked.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Back here in the Sermon on the Mount, I want
- 0:08Speaker 1: us to get this. And again, we must understand justification.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We must understand sanctification. If we don't, we will never
- 0:17Speaker 1: grasp Christian ethics.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Okay? We won't.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're talking about what makes something just.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What makes an action just? Three things.
- 0:32Speaker 1: First of all, let me explain this. I'll explain that later.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Let me give you three things. Number one, it has
- 0:39Speaker 1: to be a right action. It has to be a
- 0:41Speaker 1: right action. And by right action, I mean it has
- 0:44Speaker 1: to be an action that is right as defined by God.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It has to be a right action. If God defines
- 0:54Speaker 1: it as wrong, it can never be right. So it
- 0:57Speaker 1: has to be a right action. Secondly, It has to
- 1:01Speaker 1: be done for a right motive. It has to be
- 1:05Speaker 1: done for a right motive. And thirdly, it has to
- 1:13Speaker 1: be done for the right goal. For the right goal.
- 1:19Speaker 1: In order for an action to be ethical, from the
- 1:21Speaker 1: standpoint of Christian ethics, you have to have right action,
- 1:25Speaker 1: right motive, and right goal. An unbeliever will never have
- 1:29Speaker 1: the right motive and will never have the right goal. Therefore,
- 1:34Speaker 1: he will never perform an ethical action from a biblical perspective.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That's why Paul can say, there's no one who does good.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Let me paint this picture for you. There's a war
- 1:49Speaker 1: going on, and here's the war, and there's a unit,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and this unit in the midst of this war is
- 1:56Speaker 1: fighting a battle.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And as this unit is fighting a battle, all of
- 2:00Speaker 2: a sudden, grenade comes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: And there is one in the unit who throws his
- 2:08Speaker 1: body over the grenade now for the most part we
- 2:12Speaker 1: look at that and we would say that was an
- 2:16Speaker 1: ethical action what if he threw his body on the
- 2:21Speaker 1: grenade because he wanted a Purple Heart he wanted glory
- 2:27Speaker 1: for himself Now his motives and his goal were completely sinful. Therefore,
- 2:33Speaker 1: his action was unethical. What if he's just sick of
- 2:36Speaker 1: fighting and he wants to die? And this is a
- 2:39Speaker 1: quick way to do it. Now his motives and his
- 2:43Speaker 1: goals were sinful and unethical. Therefore, his action can never
- 2:48Speaker 1: be deemed ethical. Do you see what I'm saying? We
- 2:52Speaker 1: must have right action and right motive and right goal
- 2:57Speaker 1: in order for an act to to be ethical. So
- 3:03Speaker 1: as we go through the Sermon on the Mount, here's
- 3:06Speaker 1: the picture that Jesus is painting. Jesus is saying basically
- 3:10Speaker 1: in the Sermon on the Mount time and time again,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you know what you guys have heard that all you
- 3:16Speaker 1: had to do was this action. But I've come to
- 3:19Speaker 1: tell you that you do those actions and your goals
- 3:23Speaker 1: and your motives are completely off base. Therefore, it's still
- 3:29Speaker 1: not ethical and it's still not pleasing to God.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Sermon on the Mount is about this.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Only Through the justified and sanctified life, can we ever
- 3:52Speaker 1: do anything that is ethical? That's the simple message in
- 3:56Speaker 1: the Sermon on the Mount. Only through a justified and
- 4:01Speaker 1: sanctified life can we ever do anything.
- 4:07Speaker 2: That is ethical.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Let's look at a couple of these. We understand this
- 4:11Speaker 1: idea of right actions. It has to be doing what
- 4:13Speaker 1: God said. Let's look at right motives. Right motives. Romans
- 4:17Speaker 1: chapter two, verses six through nine. He will render to
- 4:20Speaker 1: each one according to his works. To those who by
- 4:23Speaker 1: patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality,
- 4:26Speaker 1: he will give eternal life. But for those who are
- 4:29Speaker 1: self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
- 4:34Speaker 1: they will be wrath and fury. In other words, if
- 4:38Speaker 1: you're self-seeking, two people do the same thing, but one
- 4:41Speaker 1: of them is self-seeking. Got to have right action, right motive,
- 4:47Speaker 1: right goal. Look at Romans 14, 23. But whoever has
- 4:52Speaker 1: doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is
- 4:56Speaker 1: not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith
- 5:00Speaker 1: is sin. If you needed any more evidence that an
- 5:03Speaker 1: unbeliever cannot perform ethical actions, there it is right there.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Whatever is not from faith is sin. Can an unbeliever
- 5:11Speaker 1: who has not placed faith in Jesus Christ ever do
- 5:15Speaker 1: anything from faith?
- 5:16Speaker 2: No.
- 5:17Speaker 1: So whatever he does is sin because he's not doing
- 5:21Speaker 1: it from the proper biblical motive of faith.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Okay. Which again is why.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Paul can say, no one does good from our earthly
- 5:31Speaker 1: human perspective. We see things all the time that are good. Again,
- 5:34Speaker 1: that's common grace folks. Total depravity, radical depravity doesn't mean
- 5:40Speaker 1: that man is as bad as he can be.
- 5:43Speaker 2: And we can praise God for that. All right.
- 5:46Speaker 1: That's the grace of God. But that does not make
- 5:49Speaker 1: his actions ethical. There are a lot of motivations for it,
- 5:52Speaker 1: but it's not faith. Philippians chapter two, verse three and four.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility, count
- 6:00Speaker 1: others more significant than yourself. Let each of you look
- 6:03Speaker 1: not only to his own interest, but also to the
- 6:05Speaker 1: interest of others. If I'm doing it for self-interest and
- 6:09Speaker 1: not for the interest of others, it's unethical. Look at
- 6:14Speaker 1: another motive. Look at Ephesians 5 and 21. Submitting to
- 6:22Speaker 1: one another out of reverence for Christ. Submitting to one
- 6:28Speaker 1: another out of reverence for Christ. As a wife who
- 6:32Speaker 1: submits to her husband... Because she's awed by her husband
- 6:36Speaker 1: committing an ethical act when she submits to her husband. No,
- 6:40Speaker 1: she's supposed to submit out of reverence for Christ. Her
- 6:42Speaker 1: motives are impure if they are anything other than reverence
- 6:46Speaker 1: for Christ. Is a woman who's submitting to her husband
- 6:49Speaker 1: just so she can manipulate him and get something from
- 6:51Speaker 1: him performing an ethical action?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Is she being obedient?
- 6:55Speaker 1: No. Submit yourself to one another out of reverence for Christ.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Is a child who submits to their parents for something
- 7:05Speaker 1: other than reverence for Christ, committing an ethical act from
- 7:09Speaker 1: a biblical perspective. No, it must be out of reverence
- 7:12Speaker 1: for Christ. By the way, all of this stuff that
- 7:14Speaker 1: we're learning on the Sermon on the Mount has huge
- 7:16Speaker 1: implications for the way that we teach our children. Because
- 7:19Speaker 1: for most of us, we're just teaching our children to
- 7:22Speaker 1: be self-righteous law keepers who believe in works righteousness. Do
- 7:29Speaker 1: it because it looks good. Do it because it'll embarrass
- 7:34Speaker 1: me if you don't do it. We're building self-righteous law
- 7:44Speaker 1: keepers and teaching them to rely on works righteousness as
- 7:49Speaker 1: opposed to the finished work of Jesus Christ.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Not only write motives, but write goals. Listen to some
- 8:01Speaker 2: of these goals.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,
- 8:05Speaker 1: do all to the glory of God. Amen. That's a
- 8:09Speaker 1: right goal. The glory of God. Why'd you do that?
- 8:14Speaker 1: That God might be glorified. That's why. Okay.
- 8:18Speaker 2: That's why. Then it was an ethical action.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I gave money to the poor and then I told
- 8:24Speaker 1: everybody that I did it.
- 8:27Speaker 2: What was your goal?
- 8:29Speaker 1: To bring glory to myself because I gave to the poor.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Jesus says, then you got your reward. Nothing waiting for
- 8:37Speaker 1: you in heaven. You got exactly what you were after.
- 8:41Speaker 1: People patting you on the back. He talks about this
- 8:43Speaker 1: in the Sermon on the Mount. When you fast, put
- 8:48Speaker 1: lotion on your face. Don't be all, you know, maggot
- 8:52Speaker 1: and everything. People look at you, what's going on?
- 8:55Speaker 2: I'm fasting.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I'm fasting. Colossians 3.17, and whatever you do in word
- 9:05Speaker 1: or do, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
- 9:07Speaker 1: giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3.23,
- 9:14Speaker 1: whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord and
- 9:17Speaker 1: not for men.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It's the right goal.
- 9:20Speaker 1: 1 Peter 4.10-11, As each has received a gift, use
- 9:26Speaker 1: it to serve one another as good stewards of God's
- 9:29Speaker 1: varied grace.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Listen to that.
- 9:31Speaker 1: There's a couple of goals. Number one, I want to
- 9:34Speaker 1: be a good steward of the grace of God in
- 9:36Speaker 1: my life. And number two, I want to serve my brothers.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Whoever speaks as one who speaks oracles of God. Whoever
- 9:43Speaker 1: serves as one who serves by the strength that God supplies.
- 9:46Speaker 1: In order that in everything God may be glorified through
- 9:49Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Amen. Those are right goals. Okay?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Right action right motive right goal folks the Sermon on
- 10:08Speaker 1: the Mount is not a list of things for us
- 10:13Speaker 1: to work hard to do the Sermon on the Mount
- 10:18Speaker 1: is is a mirror that reflects to us one of
- 10:22Speaker 1: two things. For those of us outside of Christ, it
- 10:26Speaker 1: reflects to us that we are ranked sinners in need
- 10:30Speaker 1: of a savior and that even our righteousness is but
- 10:33Speaker 1: filthy rags in the sight of God. Yes, but I
- 10:38Speaker 1: did ABC and XYZ.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Don't care. Didn't have the right motive. Didn't have the
- 10:44Speaker 2: right goal. It was sin.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Sin. It was either pride or fear. So the Sermon
- 10:58Speaker 1: on the Mount is going to expose that in all
- 11:00Speaker 1: of us. And the other thing is, the Sermon on
- 11:02Speaker 1: the Mount is going to show us how desperately we
- 11:05Speaker 1: all need Christ.
