- 0:01Art thou ready? Mm-hmm. Yeah. [rock music] Family Plot has arrived!
- 0:18Oh, lordy, lordy. Full spectrum cycling, folks. This is show number 319 if I guess- 319? Might be the area code of, uh, Iowa City or something. I recognize the numbers. The police?
- 0:36Oh, no, I'm looking at- Or is it... No, I'm like- [laughs] It's in Iowa. Yeah. Yes. I remember it. A lot of the bike shops when I used to go down there- Cedar Rapids, Iowa City. Yep. Yep. They were all 319s.
- 0:46Mad- Fort Madison, Burlington, Waterloo. If you went south of I-80- I-80?... you weren't on my route. Yeah, I-80. Well, it's been a cool week here in Milwaukee. Brisk, brisk, brisk. This is nice.
- 1:03Kind of not really even brisk. It's perfect. Relatively to what- Relatively [laughs] perfect... to what we were dealing with, but... Um, excuse me. Why are you... Oh, good. It did, I thought it was gonna...
- 1:16[imitates static] Uh, no, no. I, I only jostled it a little bit. Not happening. That's good. So what's going on this week here, folks? We should probably talk about the... Let's just start out with your shirts. Oh, yes.
- 1:30Yes, yes, yes. The, uh... Was that- New Rock... New Rock 102.1. Was that, was that your, um, your intro into the radio business? Yes, indeed. Yep, yep, yep. Uh. As a promotions intern, and then
- 1:44production intern, then morning show producer, or well, board op with Good Julio, then morning show producer, and then I was kind of- On-air radio personality... something like that.
- 1:59[laughs] And then just, yeah, hourly lackey whenever they would end up firing people, and then I was inevitably one of those that got fired, and now
- 2:08the universe has righted itself and now has decided to fire that radio station by having a Christian radio network system absorb them. Yeah. And I'm sure they're not gonna stick with- No. [laughs] Whatever.
- 2:22I, I've seen, I've already seen that Christian rock is on the, uh, agenda for them. So yeah, that- Not that that's a bad thing. [laughs] Well, I'm sure it's more profitable. I mean,
- 2:35Arbitron ratings never were the strong suit. They just were able to sell advertising well, and go out and do remotes and have a good time in the community. Yeah.
- 2:44At least from my time there and, mm, I'd never really noticed after the fact, they didn't seem to be... I didn't see them out as much as in the earlier days of the- Right... the 90s and whatever. Yeah.
- 2:55And they had, and on this, on the undershirt, well, these were two of the new brandings. Right. Okay, yep. 'Cause it was Hot 102.1, which was, uh, like R&B- Right... for a while, and then they went to New Rock Milwaukee.
- 3:09You know, ooh, alternative and whatever. And another one of the branding was Rock 102.1, 'cause they wanted to get into some album rock and whatever. Because, because only point eight on the- Tweak, tweak, tweak...
- 3:20because point eight on the dial away- Tweaking, tweaking, tweaking... was 102.9. Oh, yeah. Yeah, one sneeze with your hand on the dial, man. But Randy Hawk did have one clever thing, and it was this shirt.
- 3:32And if you look on the back... Nice. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that is pretty good. I remember that. A black concert T-shirt. It's been a while. I- Yeah...
- 3:39I don't know that I ever had one, but any black concert T-shirt from that long ago has long turned to gray and got- Right... moth-eaten holes and stuff in it... I was like, I'm like, "Damn, well, Randy Hawk."
- 3:49[laughs] Through the mean streets of New York. Albany. You're from Albany, man. Come on, give me a break. [laughs] So, like, punching holes in the boat. Well, so goodbye r- Rock 102.1 or New Rock 1- Yes.
- 4:01Well, ev- So yes, everybody else [laughs] welcome to... There's room in my boat. I said goodbye to them [laughs] about 20-ish years ago. [laughs] Come on and j- join JK in the boat.
- 4:11[laughs] It's, I've been waiting for two decades for y'all to join me over here. Um- Well done... [laughs] but no, I... Yep, one less grudge on my, on my plate, so. Now. There, there it is.
- 4:24Well, if we blast through a little Milwaukee stuff, we're gonna give Dave Zabrowski a call in a little bit. Uh- What?
- 4:29I only learned of this today, even though apparently the posters have been up in Uptowner for the last two months- [laughs]... according to Steven, is that Tour de Towner, as is always the case- Mm-hmm...
- 4:40Sunday before Labor Day. Mm-hmm. Sunday before Memorial Day too, but we already- Exactly... did that one. Well, it's just a trumpeting of, like, how quick this freaking summer, or how every summer goes.
- 4:50Yeah, and then- 'Cause it's like, oh, shit, yeah, the Sunday before Memorial Day. Okay. Well, okay, now we're in, we're getting into summer now. And then- And then it's the e- Labor Day, and then the summer...
- 5:00and, and that's just the, that's just the thing, is I, I wasn't i- I wasn't ready for Labor Day yet. I know. I want more, two more months.
- 5:07And, uh, though you can't see and/or hear right now, we're actually doing this Tuesday because Wednesday, our normal day, I'm moving my son Garrett back into the dorms at the UWM. Which tower?
- 5:20I th- he's, I don't think he's in the sa- I think he's in South now. I dunno. Whatever. I was South. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And he- Tower in the South... last year was on the 14th floor, which had a wicked nice view.
- 5:31I think this year he's on the eighth floor. I don't know that that really matters that much. I think I was eighth floor.
- 5:35I think I was eighth floor, but I had one of those, like, n- narrow, tiny windows that just faced north. Like, almost like a, uh, prison window? Yeah. Yeah. Totally.
- 5:44Yeah, like a slit, like, like from a, like, like I was in a castle shooting arrows at the- [laughs]... you know, at the intruders and what have you. Yeah.
- 5:52But yeah, and all you could see is a little bit of sky, but essentially you saw West Tower and So- or, and North Tower. Oh, gotcha. Yeah. So there was no- Depending on what side of the building you're on...
- 6:03it wasn't for a view by any means. I think that, doesn't that tower have a on-the-top decky thing? Or some sort of area where you can congregate? I don't think so. Mm. I think that would be- Where you-...
- 6:15terribly foolhardy, but [laughs] Where you would throw yourself off after your exams Jesus, yeah. I'm telling you. Oh, maybe. That's probably why you had the slit in the room, so you could- I would-...
- 6:22jump out the window... no, it didn't, yeah. I mean, it was like p- you know, it's like, you know, poured concrete buildings and- Right. Yeah. Yeah It reminds me a little Tel Aviv kind of. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:32There's very Eastern block kind of- Yeah... feel to it. Yeah. Well, he's got a roommate that he was with last year, too. Um, they weren't in the same room, but now they will be co-roommating it. They were suite mates.
- 6:46They were suite mates before. Yeah And now they're gonna actually be roomies- Right on... apparently. I had, I had, I had two interesting roomies.
- 6:52First one was Sun Ji, Sun Ji Lee from Korea, my introduction to proper ramen. Ah. And so instead of, you know- Right on... it was like, "Oh, hey, Mara Chan." No, no, no. No. No, you get that.
- 7:03Now it's, you can kind of get it everywhere, the Nongshim, uh, Shin ramen that's, uh, good and spicy. Yep. And yeah, so it was introduction to that. Sweet. That boy could drink. Oh, oh man. That guy put, could put...
- 7:15He put a, a case of beer down by himself in the room, and then left to go to one of the, his parties, his- Okay... of his, uh, countrymen. [laughs] Oh. They were hanging out and getting it, the...
- 7:32And he came stumbling back at, like, about 4:00 in the morning. [laughs] "Hey, Mike, it's, uh, da, da, da, da, da." [laughs] It was freaking great. Right on. And then the second semester was a,
- 7:43a ex-Latin Kings [laughs] member. Oh. Which- All right... provided for some interesting, uh- Yeah. You know, once you're a friend with those guys, you're friends for life. Yeah, yeah. I, I don't, yeah, I wasn't...
- 7:53I, I kept a good, "Hey. Hi, hi." [laughs] Well, right on. It was an interesting thing. Nostalgia all over this pro- um- Uh, Triple T is, is... Guess where Triple T is? Getting his, uh, car repaired? He's in the Dells.
- 8:10Oh, shit. [laughs] Are you kidding me? No. [laughs] Good Lord, oh. [laughs] J- JK's going to the Dells- [laughs] Like, everyone's-... later in the week...
- 8:17everyone's going to the Dells, or just came from the Dells, or da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
- 8:21So I was, uh, I was texting with him today, because Steven was in today, so we did some work in the shop, and got the Bass Boat electric bike all finished up. Oh, yeah? Boy, is that thing fun. Really?
- 8:34It goes 28.7 miles an hour. Okay. Uh, but you don't have to go that fast if you don't want to. But it looks good. I got a picture, you see in the show notes.
- 8:43It might even be the main picture, 'cause I didn't do a lot of cycle pictures this week, I don't think. But, uh, yeah. Check that out. Uh, you know what I think I should do?
- 8:54I think I'm going to you, maybe, uh, talk about, uh, your radio days or something. I'm gonna call- [laughs]... I'm gonna call our guest, because I'm doing it a little differently than we normally do. There you go.
- 9:04Well, I'm gonna recap a little bit of the weekend when it... I did end up at the Ren Fair. Ah, yes, and the Bristol 45 Diner I saw, because- Yes... you had the unicorned f- I got-... that, that, that-...
- 9:14the unicorn pancake again. And I, it was great, 'cause I kind of full mix the waitress. It was a table of eight, or yeah, I think it was eight of us, and, you know, s- somebody orders that.
- 9:26You know, it's like, okay, they're kind of pre-programmed to come out, "That comes to the child." [laughs] Oh. And then they came out to the table like, "Okay, who is the child that ordered this?" Yes. Right on.
- 9:38I didn't get, I didn't get the garlic bread this time. I got a bloody Mary instead. [laughs] I did see the bloody Mary. Okay. So we have that picture too, folks. You can check that out, uh, let's see.
- 9:47Let's see if this actually works the way I think it will. [phone ringing] It's Will's too. Oh, yeah. It's ringing. It's ringing. See how Johnny-on-the-spot Dave is. [phone ringing] Phone, um. [laughs] Be good. Be good.
- 10:02Hello. Hello. How are you now? I'm okay. [laughs] Good. Good, good. I, I was a little con- I, since we haven't used this method of connecting before, I'm like, "How the hell does this work again?"
- 10:14But, uh, I gotta say, I think it's, I think it's better than going the 3,000 miles out to LA or however far it is and back to us again kinda thing. Oh, for the, the call to go like that? Yeah. Hello.
- 10:27Well, you sound much more throaty than normal. It's, you've got that- [laughs] You've got that radio voice coming over now. Yeah, everybody. Barry White. And I think, yeah.
- 10:36Anyway, I, w- we were working, folks, we were working on some tech- well, I was working on some technology, how to, how to make this thing work. So now we've got, uh, Mr. Dave Schlabowski, Sealy Dave, on the horn.
- 10:47Sealy Dave, what's up with you?
- 10:51Well, I just thought I would check in, um, post Leadville 100 mountain bike race, um, which I did not race, but I attended as a crew support person for a couple other guys on my old, old team, the old, uh, Trocadero team.
- 11:10Oh. And I started way back when- Haven't heard of that in a while... way back when Trocadero was actually open. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. I was like, "Wow, we're, this is a all nostalgia show." [laughs] Yeah, yeah.
- 11:18All, all, we were just talking about, uh, JK's, the 102.1 radio station down here in Milwaukee being sold to a Christian broadcasting group. Oh. [laughs] So, so- [laughs] Uh, so how was Leadville?
- 11:33I haven't been out that way for man, I bet 15 years. That's the, that's some high altitude stuff out there. Yeah.
- 11:40So, um, so I didn't race, but I, I rode out there quite a bit, and we, my one friend, uh, I had two friends that did it, and the one friend, um, he got in via the lottery.
- 11:52And so then once he got in, it's very hard to get into that race, once he got in, he took it very seriously. He's 45 now. Used to be, like, a cat one, you know, racer- Okay...
- 12:06um, and, you know, expert sort of mountain bike racer and stuff. But- You know, family and work, and he owns his own business. He is a home builder now and stuff like that.
- 12:16So all that stuff, you know, sort of sidelined his racing. He, he's always been a fit person. Um, you know, he still plays basketball and lifts weights and stuff like that. But, um, but he hasn't really raced much.
- 12:29They do Shawnee. They come up here and visit to race the Shawnee Mountain Bike Festival and, uh, and the Birkie, and those are kinda like their... had been, like, his only kinda races each year. Right on.
- 12:41But so he hired a coach, Matthew Boucher, who is, um, from Wauwatosa, two-time US national champion, was on the RadioShack team, blah, blah, blah. Um, he's now a Carmichael coach. Um, so he hired Matthew.
- 12:59Um, his brother is on our team, his older brother, um, Aaron Boucher, and, uh, I think his dad was on our team for a while, too. Um, anyway, um, so he hired that guy as a coach.
- 13:14He went out and bought a brand-new bike from Ben Cycle, a fancy specialized Epic with all the flight attendant electronic nonsense and stuff on it. [laughs] Yeah, yeah.
- 13:25Um, yeah, so he was taking it super seriously, um, anyway, and trained s- very hard for, like, eight months and, um- Wow... and, uh...
- 13:35So he, because he was taking it so seriously, he wanted to acclimatize to that altitude. I mean, there's sort of two ways to do it.
- 13:43You can, like, go out there early and, you know, acclimatize, and there's various schedules for doing so. Right, right. Um, but, uh, um, or you can sort of, like, pop in, like, you know,
- 13:56day or two before the race and cross your fingers and hope that, like, it doesn't, the altitude doesn't hit you and hurt you too bad. So he- So he chose the f- [laughs] He chose the first option. Right on.
- 14:08Um, a lot of people do just, you know, kinda run in the day before, and it... A lot of people, it doesn't hurt them too much. Um, the altitude seems to
- 14:20have a negative effect like, m- its most negative effect, like, you know, a few days in, like three, four days in. [laughs] So, um- I, I, I did the- But he- I was gonna say, I remember- Yeah, go ahead...
- 14:31I remember going out there to, uh, to Leadville or s- some other little town. It wasn't Breckenridge.
- 14:37I don't remember where it was, but my buddy had already lived out there, and he worked at Vail Mountain and, you know, he was living at 8,000 or 9,000 feet already anyway. And I just- Right...
- 14:47remember having a couple Grolsh beers and being like, "Oh my God, am I trashed on just, like, two beers." [laughs] Anyway, so he, so he- Yeah, so we- So he chose-... we worked our way, we worked our way up.
- 14:59And, um, and I did do a, a bunch of riding out there, um, and, uh, and so
- 15:07we started at, like, 8,000 feet, I think, by, like, uh, Estes Park, and then we went to Fraser, y- which is just outside of Winter Park, and we went up, you know, a couple thousand feet, and then we went to Leadville.
- 15:22So, um, and, uh- And Leadville's, like, it's about 10,000 there. 10. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's a little over 10. Yeah. It's 10, one something. Um, and, um, and then we also did, you know, some...
- 15:36So he rode the, pre-rode the course, got to pre-ride the course for a week and, you know, tried to, um, check his time climbing up, you know, the big climbs and going down as fast as he could.
- 15:49And it, for those that don't know, Leadville is capped at 2,000 riders still. Lifetime owns it. It's part of the Lifetime Grand Prix series now. Hmm.
- 16:02And you can advance your, your start gate by doing well at a f- handful of other, I think, three other Lifetime race qualifiers, one of which is the Lutsen 99er, which my buddy Casey also did.
- 16:20And I went up there with them. I worked the event, um, and, um, but he, he and I went up together with another pal up here, Matt Hewitt. I don't know if you remember Matt from- Mm-hmm...
- 16:31Ben Cycle and from the, um, Courier days and- And, and-... Bike Polo. He lives up here now, he and Elizabeth Frantick. Um, but anyway, they're both race- Oh, right, right, right. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:40Yeah, I saw, I did see them- They're pretty avid racers... when I was up there for the Fat Bike Birkie. I saw Liz walking down the road, and, uh- Oh, yeah. Yeah... I think we ran into him somewhere.
- 16:49I, maybe, I don't know. Yeah. Uh, whatever. But yeah, so, and Lutsen- So he and Matt, he and Matt raced Lutsen, um, which, a- and, and they both did pretty well. So that got Casey up to the third start gate.
- 17:04So it's pros, elites, and then there's the next start. It's, like, pros and then silver and gold or something or red and s- I don't know, but he was in, like, the third start gate.
- 17:19So, um, so he got a very early start. He didn't have to fight his way through all those, you know, 2,000 racers- Sure, sure... which was advantageous. Absolutely.
- 17:29And then, um, his goal was to, you know, a- and he had worked with his coach to do a sub-9 event.
- 17:36Um, you get a large belt buckle for finishing in under nine hours, and you get a smaller belt buckle for finishing under 12 hours, and that's the, their cutoff. You don't get a buckle after that.
- 17:47[laughs] No buckle for you. Um... They're not getting branded though. Yeah. Like, what, they're not getting actually branded, are they? [laughs] No. I forget which- No... which event is that- No, I-...
- 17:56where the win or where the winners get branded... that was the Fat, that was the, um- [laughs]... Fat Bike World Championships. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They, they do that. Okay. Yeah. Right, right. Okay. Yeah.
- 18:04All right. Um- I should know that... and, yeah, they've only, I think they only did that twice- [laughs]... in all their times they did it. Um, but, um, but yeah, so he-
- 18:17So I was running s- I was with one other pal doing support at one aid station, and then we had our, Matthew's brother Aaron doing support at the other aid station. Because it's an out and back
- 18:31race, um, you, uh, you go through each aid station twice. Right. There were two other, there are two other optional aid stations. We didn't staff any of those. We thought it was enough to just do these.
- 18:43And so you ride out, and there's a couple of pretty big, brutal climbs. Powerline is one and Columbine is the other one.
- 18:50Um, and then you race back down while other people are riding up these narrow, gravel, really rocky roads that are, you know, 25% grade and- Whoosh, whoosh...
- 19:02and Columbine is over 12,000 feet, um, and, uh, uh, the Powerline isn't, but it's still pretty high and very steep. So a lot of people end up walking their bikes on the tops of each of 'em- Sure...
- 19:18um, just because of altitude and steepness and how rocky they are. When I was out there, um, I rode up Mosquito Pass, which is 12,300 I think it was, and I hit 42% grade, um- Holy mackerel... going up it. Wow.
- 19:37So, and it's- How, how does that-... really rocky... is that measured on your, uh- It was-... GPS device? Yeah, my... Yeah, yes, my, yeah, it, it is. And it, it was, it was consistently over 20% grade- Wow...
- 19:50and with steeper, steeper spots of, like I said, 42%. Well, I know, I've been, I've been watching the- S-... I've been watching the Vuelta- Mm...
- 19:58and those guys are, they're like, "Oh my God, this thing is getting up into the nine and 10% area." [laughs] Yeah, I know. [laughs] Yeah. Dude. Yeah. Yes. Let me tell you.
- 20:09Yeah, I, a- I thought when I first hit 26% grade at, like 11,000 feet, I was like, "Oh my God," like, "this can't get any harder, can it?"
- 20:19[laughs] Were, were you, were you still able to ride it or were you, were you pushing? No. No, I was pushing- [laughs]... at that point. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um- Can't imagine that...
- 20:28lack of, lack of alti- lack of oxygen, um, over 11,000 feet, plus the steep grade, plus it was really rocky, and these are sharp, pointy rocks, not like the rocks here. [laughs] Yeah. And since I've had a couple of...
- 20:45You know, I broke three vertebrae a couple years ago and I separated shoulder. Like, I walk rock gardens on the CAMBA trails- Sure... [laughs] 'cause- Yeah, no... I'm just, I'm just too o- I mean- I'm just too old.
- 20:58I- [laughs] Fuck. It takes so long to recover and heal, you know? Right. Well, I, I'm still fighting a shoulder thing from a year ago. It's like, come on, man. Right, exactly. Are you still, are you r- Exactly. Right...
- 21:06are you ever gonna get feeling better? Yeah. I know. I know. I know. I'm not getting surgery on this one, but man, just it's, it's... Yeah. I know. I don't wanna fall down anymore. [laughs] But yeah.
- 21:15So anyway, so Casey, he... Like I said, he pre-rode the course, so he knew it really well. He pre-rode it a number of times.
- 21:24He was always checking his, his, um, times against other people, um, both climbing and descending on the Powerline and on Columbine, and it, he was- Yeah...
- 21:37often in the top 10, um, for a lot of that, so he felt good about it. Good. Wow. Um, and, uh, and then he ended up finishing in... Oh, he crashed hard going down Columbine.
- 21:53Um, broke a saddle. Oh, geez. Broke two, both rails on his saddle- Wow... but it was still kinda hanging on there. So he had to ride like 30 miles with a broken saddle after a really hard crash. Um, and he's still...
- 22:10Like, I was just getting text messages from him of all his road rash and some- Hmm... weird bump that he refuses to go get an X-ray on. [laughs] On his leg and I'm like- I don't wanna know what that is. No...
- 22:20yeah, [laughs] I'm like, dude- They'll tell, they'll tell me something's wrong and I'm not going to see that guy. Yeah. Right. He's like, "I gotta keep an eye on it."
- 22:26I'm like, "You've been keeping an eye on it for quite a while now. I think it's time for an X-ray, dude." Um, but, um, anyway, um, so he finished in eight hours and 19 minutes- Wow... even with that crash. And we did...
- 22:41A- and, and having to ride on a broken saddle for 30 miles- Yeah... until we- That's crazy... we, we sourced him a new saddle at, at the aid station.
- 22:48But, um, but he had to ride a long time on a broken saddle where he couldn't, it was crooked, and he, he couldn't put all his weight on it, you know, because he was afraid the last of it was gonna [laughs] break, you know?
- 23:00Yeah. [laughs] And, and then you got a seat post up your butt. Right. [laughs] Yes. Right. Wow. Right. So he finished in 8:19.
- 23:08And so he didn't know this until after the race, but his coach, Matthew Boucher, sent him his TrainingPeaks prediction for Casey's finish, and it was 8:20. Wow.
- 23:23[laughs] And so he would've- He finished with- He would've gone faster- He finished with a minute. Yeah, he would've... He might have broke eight, which was really fast.
- 23:32He was 105th out of 2,000 people, but only 1,300 finished the race. Right on. Out of the 2,000- Geez... only about 2,000 finished, so he was like 105th.
- 23:45So he would've been, you know, top 100, and maybe broke eight- Yeah... hours- Wow... which is pretty darn fast. Uh- The winners, um, Keegan Swenson finished in 5:45, and the women- Wow...
- 24:00this year broke a, I think, 11-year record of sub seven hour record that the two women, Kate Courtney at UCI,
- 24:11uh, World Cup, uh, Pro, who broke her hand and couldn't race the World Cup circuit and is recovering, and there's a gap- In their s- their race, so she did Leadville as like a one-off. Uh-huh. And she ended up [laughs]
- 24:27Yeah. Currently she's very good at it. Yeah. I got, I got, I got time into this. [laughs] Uh, speaking of all these hills, Powerline and Columbine and Schmagity Flying and uh- Mosquito Coast... yeah, Mosquito Coastery.
- 24:38[laughs] Oh, yeah. Right We're at, we're at the top of one of these hills now. Uh, JK brought today's beer here at the old studio. Uh, I haven't had this one. Wait, this is new. It says right on the box, "New."
- 24:49Yep, yep, yep. It's, it's the Bell's Oberon Eclipse. It's a raspberry wheat. Oh, I've had that. It's a raspberry wheat. It- it's better than I was expecting. Yeah. I was like- It's, it's-...
- 24:59"Oh, I don't like flavored beer. Nah, nah." I know. I know. That's why I didn't really- [laughs]... celebrate it too much except in the- No, it's good. It's actually good. [laughs] I was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah."
- 25:08It says, it, it says, "If you can't see the sunshine, make your own. We've used raspberry."
- 25:15It's, yeah, I mean, if you like a Oberon, Oberon taste of summer- Yeah, that was all- So- The whole Michigan trip was all Oberon fueled, for sure. [laughs] Okay. Yeah.
- 25:24So it's in the same vein, it just has, like, a bit of a raspberry- Yeah. It's not-... current taste... it's not super offensive fruit-nessy wise. Exactly. And it, yeah, it's pretty drinkable.
- 25:355.8, gets you a little up there a little bit, there he, a little bit quicker than a dad beer, but- Was, uh- It all works out nicely... hmm. Yeah. Dave, was, uh, New- Nice... was New Belgium out there all over the place?
- 25:47Or do they not partake of the- You know, Leadville-... cycling events?... is an interesting to- Lea- Leadville is an interesting town. Um, it, it is very old. Most, you know, it's mining- Sure... stuff everywhere.
- 26:00Literally, there's all kinds of great riding there. I'd highly encourage folks to go out there and ride.
- 26:06Um, there's tons of great riding out there, and they even have a really great paved trail called the, uh, what's it called? The Mineral Belt Trail, I think.
- 26:15Um, and it's got all these little kiosks with historic information about all kinds of mining stuff that you can see along the route.
- 26:24Um, and I stopped, I rode it a couple of times and stopped at every one of those little kiosks and read them all- [laughs]... 'cause they're all pretty interesting. Right on. Um, and it was very cool.
- 26:34And so you're going by all these, I mean, these old 1800s era mines that they just, when they played out, they just, they just left them, and they're all still there, you know?
- 26:46Um, they're usually filled in, but all these remnants are there and everything. Yeah. So it's ver- it's kinda cool, plus you're up in the mountains very high, you know.
- 26:54The town is got a nice Main Street that looks traditional Colorado western mountain town-ish- Yep, yep... you know. And then, um, all these houses are all these weird little wooden mining houses.
- 27:11You know, 600 to 900 square feet mining houses with all kinds of decorative wood trim on them that's painted interesting colors, but they all look kinda shitty. [laughs] Yeah?
- 27:25But they're worth a zill- they're all worth a, a million- Yeah... bucks or something. Yeah. No, no kidding.
- 27:29And they've got nice paint on them, but somebody really, I don't know why people don't just, "Hey, you know what? You should just quit putting paint over that and actually fix it."
- 27:38Isn't there a- [laughs] Um, but it's a cool town. Floyd's is out there, Floyd's of Leadville. Oh, yeah. The, um- Yeah. One of, one, one of, one of the dopers from- You know, Floyd Landis. I saw him...
- 27:46one of the dopers from the old days, Floyd Landis. Yep. Yeah, Floyd, yeah, I saw him. Uh- Isn't there, is there a restaurant in Leadville that has a train that goes around the top of the, the...
- 27:56It's, like, almost up by the ceiling. It's like a, you know, a gart- gart- I didn't, I didn't-... garden gauge train... go in, but there is, there is an old...
- 28:04Okay, Leadville does have an old, like, uh, narrow gauge train. It, maybe it's not narrow gauge. Um, it has an old train, historic train that you can ride out of Leadville.
- 28:16Um, and there is a really old saloon, and I didn't end up going to that saloon. Um, so maybe that, maybe that one has that. Yeah. But- My, my th- it was, it was like a restaurant.
- 28:29It, my Colorado map might be off a little bit. I remember- Hmm...
- 28:33I think there's a road between Leadville and Telluride or something, and there's a place called State Bridge out there in the middle of nowhere that's just a big party bar/thing right on a river. Hmm.
- 28:43Uh, I mean, I love Colorado, I just haven't been out there often enough- Yeah... recently. It's just, it's, it's, it's one of the states that I would say everybody has to go check out at least a few times.
- 28:56Yeah, for sure. No, it's great. We had a great time. Lot of good riding, lot of good altitude.
- 29:02Um, I came back and, like, for the first, like, couple of days, every ride I went on, I was like, "Oh my God, this must be what EPO feels like." [laughs] Like, I could... 'Cause I was, I was just process...
- 29:15I was like, I can just go s- like, I was two or three cogs, like, smaller- Right... every climb. Ev- I, yeah, I never got tired. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, it was amazing. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:29'Cause I was still processing oxygen, you know, after two and a half weeks out there- Sure... above, you know- Sure... 9,000 feet, I was still- Yeah. Well, it's- Yeah, it was pretty awesome...
- 29:38that's why all those fancy racers do that high altitude training. [laughs] Unless they have a hyperbaric chamber in their, uh, in their house.
- 29:44My old, my old roommate had the, uh, training mask 'cause he wanted to, uh- [laughs]... climb, uh, Mount Rainier or some shit like that. And he- Uh-huh...
- 29:54y- it was a training mask, and you would just wear it, and it w- it, like, you w- it looked like a gas mask, and you just changed the, uh, valves to- For how, for how much oxygen you're getting? To get- Exactly...
- 30:04to get less oxygen. And, and- Yeah... and all they would say is- [laughs]... "Do not-" To kill yourself... do not fall asleep with this on.
- 30:09Guess what the dumba- [laughs] did, was, yeah, fall asleep on a couple occasions. [laughs] So you, like, gain, like, self-induced vertigo. Oh, boy. And yeah, you get, like, altitude, what, altitude sickness- Yeah...
- 30:21and whatever. [laughs] And it was just, like, the crazy... And I'm just like, "Oh, my God." You're, you're- I still have-... not quite at sea level, but you're not far away from it...
- 30:28he, and I'll, I, I have, I actually have the mask 'Cause he wanted to get rid of it. [laughs] And he was throwing it away, and I was just like, "You know what? I... Just, that's just creepy enough just to hold onto."
- 30:39[laughs] 'Cause it does, I mean, it l- it looks like a, you know, a combination gas mask- Oh... and, like, sex, [laughs] you know, BDSM, like- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah... you know, whip me, whip me kind of, uh,
- 30:51uh, [laughs] k- kinda wardrobe and- A little creeper zone action Yeah, just, like, crazy shit that- Yeah... you know, you never know what you'll find in, in the closets. Hey, Dave, bef- before we- [laughs]...
- 31:02before we, uh, uh, sign off, and by the way, I gotta say, this, this way of doing the, the show, you'll... If you listen to the show, you'll hear so much better than... I, and I love call-in studio.
- 31:11There's a lot of good things about it, but the audio quality is so much better. Um- Oh, good...
- 31:16before you go, though, I know that we, uh, the, the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival and 40-mile race is coming up here in a couple of weeks. Well, what do you, is there,
- 31:27is there still a chance to get in, or is it pretty full? Or- Oh, yeah, I think you can. No, I think you can get in it. It's pretty full, but I think there's... You can still register for that. What does- Um, so yeah.
- 31:39What does- And the pirates are back this year. Arr. So. Oh. I was dressed like a pirate for- Yeah... Renaissance Fair. Pirates are back. Yeah. Dave had the Yaris out in Rosy's Field- [laughs]...
- 31:48one year when he was doing, uh, when he was just heckling people and announcing on the way through Rosy's Field [laughs]... with a pirate flag and a Yaris. Um, uh, what are you doing for that weekend?
- 31:58Are you covering the event or just hanging out? I work, I work, I work it. Yeah. Okay. I, I, I work the event.
- 32:04I, I will do a bunch of photography and drone stuff, and then I, um, I don't do, like, the official race stuff. There's, there's, you know, Marathon Photo does, like, the racer photos. Sure.
- 32:17And then there's a couple guys that live up here, Kelly Randolph and another guy, that have been doing, um,
- 32:26the official race, you know, r- ride on the back of the moto and stuff like that since Gary was running it, you know? So they still do that stuff.
- 32:34Um, and then Lifetime, if you haven't watched the Lifetime channel on YouTube- [laughs]... they, they had helicopters, they had e-bikes, they had motorcycles. They had really good coverage of that.
- 32:49It's about 20 minutes to watch the race. Really good coverage of that Leadville 100. Oh, okay. And they also do, do similar, no helicopters- [laughs]... for a 40-mile race.
- 33:01Um, but they do similar good coverage, uh, for the Chequamegon Mountain Bike Festival. So check out the YouTube Lifetime Grand Prix LooT- YouTube channel. Yeah. And, uh, the, the race coverage is really good.
- 33:14So that's, uh- So if you need a team for it... that's already, I mean, that's up already, right? They, I, I assume they did it- Yep, it's up. Yep... they did it live, right? Probably. Uh, it's live.
- 33:20Yeah, it's live, and then they, you know, keep it up- Oh. [laughs]... so you can re-watch it. Yeah, so. Send, send me that photo. Um, all right.
- 33:27Well, if you have any shots you wanna send along, we'll throw a couple in the show notes. Maybe people- Okay. Great... can get a feel for how...
- 33:33You know, you're above the tree line at, at some of those real high spots there- Yeah... and it's just- I'll, I'll te- I didn't, because I was working the event, I didn't...
- 33:41I brought all my camera gear, but I didn't really get to use a-, you know, st- I was crewing at a- Yeah, yeah... you know, aid station. So- Copy that.
- 33:49But, um, but I have s- but I have some pictures from my rides and stuff like that. Yeah. Sure. I'll, I'll text you a couple of those, uh, that you can put up.
- 33:55What I got, I actually s- [laughs] when I saw my, um, when I saw my GPS head unit say 42%- Mm-hmm... I, like, I, like, c- [laughs] Like, no one will believe this. Right? So I stopped and I, I took a photo of it. Yeah.
- 34:07You're walking. I'll send you that. That's not quite the face of a cliff, but it's, that's... I, I can't imagine. Yeah. I don't think I've ever seen anything that steep on a bike, so. Yeah. It was insane. Yeah. So.
- 34:17All right. All right. I'll, I'll text you a couple of those. Okay. All right, Dave, talk to you soon. All right. Bye. Thanks very much. Yep. Bye. Bye, guys. Bye. Later. Dave Schlabowski, everybody.
- 34:27[phone beeping] Boop, boop, boop. Bye, Dave. [laughs] Uh, he was at Leadville 100. That is a, uh... I w- I was curi- I w- I wish I knew what, uh, 'cause Lance Armstrong did a couple of the very early Leadvilles.
- 34:40Lance, Lance. And I remember one year, it might have been the first year he did it, he, he had a flat.
- 34:46It was right when tubeless tires came out, and he had a, a, he burped the tire or something happened, and he couldn't get it reseated, and he rode something like the last 15 miles of the race with a flat tire- [laughs]
- 34:59... and still won the race. Sh- right. And this is after the... Whatever. I'm just saying, Lance is the shit, man. Lance. I don't give a fuck what any of you people think. Lance is- Lonestone... Lance is cool.
- 35:09[laughs] Lonestone. Lonestone. Yeah, he's just got- [clears throat] He's just got the one nerve thingy- Yeah. There... and he can do that deal... you gotta do, you gotta do the flip-off. Well, it's a thing.
- 35:17That's how you give the flip-off. The Lonestone flip-off. Uh, uh, j- really, there's not that much more on here. A couple quick things. Island Cat. This sounded interesting.
- 35:27Steven was telling me about this today while we were working in the shop. This is a, it's a alley cat, but it's on Madeline Island up there by Bayfield, way up there in Lake Superior. Okay. And I'm a little unclear.
- 35:41I tried to get a little lay of the land there. There's a farm up there someone owns, and I think she's one of the organizers of this thing, and I don't know if they're- [laughs]...
- 35:49staying on Madeline Island or they're staying near it in Bayfield, but there's a couple... It's, like, a three-day thing, a Friday, Saturday, Sunday kind of an idea, and it just sounds cool.
- 35:58There's a link in the show notes. Uh, it is the same weekend as our full moon bike ride redo. Reduce. Which we, we just got another- Oh, that's way the hell up there, I assume. Oh, yeah.
- 36:14It's way, it's, it's right up there at the Lake Sup- Superior. Apostle Islands. On the old Bayfield Peninsula. Yeah, true. Yeah, there, there... Yeah, there's Mayfield. Mayfield. Bayfield.
- 36:22My, my geography sucks- It, but it-... without the super, the super hints here. Yeah, yeah. No, it's good. Here, check this out.
- 36:29I don't know, I don't know if our, uh, viewer can see this, but I'm gonna put it right by that thing I don't know. Ah. Does Full Spectrum Cycling get recognized as one of the best cycling podcasts? We're in the top 100.
- 36:46Hey. Yeah. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. There's... It says right here million, there's millions. There's like four million podcasts or something. There's a shit ton of them.
- 36:53Um, yeah, we got a little award, Best Cycling Podcast. I beg to differ. I think this is a pretty horrible show, but we keep doing it anyway. [laughs] Self-effacing it is, you know. Uh, the o- [clears throat]...
- 37:05the other thing I wanted to mention before we go, what is it? What is it? What is it? I don't think it's anything else. I just wanted to- Full moon. Oh, yeah.
- 37:12Because of the Full Moon Beach Ride Redux, uh, we got another, we got another rider today. We were over at Amorphic, and Dan was sitting over there and said, uh, "By cracky, I'd like to join you guys." Ah, nice.
- 37:23To which I replied, "Fucking A, bro." Right. Uh, we don't even have... That's not this, that's next weekend. Right. Correct. Yeah, we don't have a weather report this week. I'm just, yeah, I was, like, looking.
- 37:35I was seeing how far my, like, forecast goes out. Yeah, next week we'll have a, we'll have a thing. But you know what? Here's the deal. Well, the, yeah, the vibe- And if, if, if-...
- 37:43the vibe, if the vibe continues, which it should- Right... it'll be in the, you know, 70- Ah... 60s. And if last- Perfect...
- 37:50and if last full moon beach ride is any indication, if you don't show up, you can't reap the reward. The worst thing that can happen is we sit in a bar and have a few beers.
- 38:00Best thing that could happen is probably the best ride of the season so far [laughs] for me anyway. Right. So, uh, if, yeah. And if you try to, yeah, and then, and then you run away- Yeah... guess what?
- 38:09Then you s- get stuck in traffic for five hours. Yeah. I would still, I might still sleep in the old, uh, camper van. [clears throat] Camper Van Beethoven is my guy's n- Right?... my guy's name.
- 38:19[laughs] [sings] Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. Oh, if only we could play that Julio playlist right now. Ah, it's gotta be on there. Uh- Yes. Uh, yeah, it is a public playlist. Julio in the '90s.
- 38:33On Spotify? On the old Spotify. Julio in the '90s would be hearkening back to the early days of, was it Rock 102.1 then? Or- It was New Rock. New Rock. Okay. New Rock 102.1. New Rock 102.1.
- 38:42He was the one who kind of taught me how to run the board and engage in the audience- And you haven't, and you haven't-... and just be a, just a shitter. Yeah. [laughs] You know, like... Well, I, okay.
- 38:54You haven't forgotten any of it to this point? [laughs] I mean, it was like, you know, you, we would just, like, do crap. I mean, without... Okay, no video. Right. So it was just the audio. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:03You paint, you, you're painting a word picture for everybody. And- And, I mean, we're just doing just weird things, like, in the studio.
- 39:10Like, "Okay, we got a blender and we've got a couple of Scooby-Doo action figures, and we're gonna put them in the blender and just see who survives." [laughs] Damn.
- 39:21And so I do, [laughs] and Scooby, drop him in there, ree, boom. And Scooby kicks out part of the blender. [laughs] Like, like, j- and it hits Julio on air, right in the face. And he's like, totally, I mean, didn't swear.
- 39:39[laughs] Well, and that's a- Well, I mean, fr-... that's a skill that is, is- Yeah... obvi- honestly, I think that's a skill that's learned by hanging out with your grandparents too much. Mm-hmm.
- 39:48[laughs] Just pretend you're talking to your grandparents and you really can't swear on the air. Right. Or if you do, you just bulldoze through. Da, da, da, da, da, da, nobody paid attention to that.
- 39:59Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. "Hey, look at that blue car over there. And yeah, I'm jingling these keys. I tell you, I tell you, I tell you." [laughs] But yeah, um, [laughs] what is it called again?
- 40:07I just wanna make sure. All, all one word or no spaces. Julio_the90s with an apostrophe. I don't know. [clears throat] Okay. We'll figure it out. You can, you can send, you can share it with me and we'll- Sure.
- 40:22Yeah, sure... put it in the show notes. All right, everybody. Uh, thanks to Dave Slobowski for calling in. Next week, I believe, if all things work out well for us... This is a, this is like a cable here doing something.
- 40:33I'm telling you. Um, uh- Playing a little, uh- You know what? And yeah, yeah... double Dutch. Don't watch the video, you can't see how much jump roping that microphone just did. Yeah. And you can't see- Um-...
- 40:42my, my, my cool, the back of my cool T-shirt. I'm thinking, uh, Sam- Randy Rhoads... Sam D is gonna join us next week. Uh- You can sugarcoat a turd, but it's still a turd. Right on.
- 40:50[laughs] You know, that was the wisdom I had to deal with. [laughs] But he gave us this T-shirt and that shitty wisdom. There you go. [laughs] All right, everybody.
- 40:58Thank you for listening this week and, uh, we'll, we'll be here again- [clears throat]... apparently. Bye.
- 41:06[rock music]
