- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:16It is this most exciting day. It's the 24th of December, It is
- 0:22Christmas Eve. Our friends, it is my absolute
- 0:25joy and delight to say hello. Thanks for joining me as we are
- 0:31going to finish reading the beginning of Luke.
- 0:33We're going to finish reading Luke chapter one.
- 0:35Set the scene ready for tomorrow where we will celebrate this
- 0:40most incredible day where the God of the universe comes down
- 0:46and is born amongst us lowly humans so that he can live a
- 0:51life like ours. He can share His compassion with
- 0:55us, and He can help us learn what God is actually like.
- 1:00And then, and then He can defeat death and win victory for us.
- 1:05Oh, what an incredible deal. What an incredible time of year.
- 1:09I hope you are as excited as I am, or at least maybe even more
- 1:14excited than I am. That would be a little
- 1:15unhealthy, perhaps, but either way, so good.
- 1:18So good to have your company this exciting time of year.
- 1:21Are you ready to dive in? Oh, me too.
- 1:24Let us keep reading this story as we read together Luke chapter
- 1:28146 to 80. Mary responded.
- 1:44Oh, how my soul praises the Lord, how my spirit rejoices in
- 1:50God my Saviour. For He took notice of His lowly
- 1:54servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me
- 1:59blessed. For the mighty One is holy, and
- 2:04He has done great things for me. He shows mercy from generation
- 2:09to generation to all who fear Him.
- 2:12His mighty arm has done tremendous things.
- 2:16He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
- 2:19He has brought down Princess from their Thrones and exalted
- 2:22the humble. He has filled the hungry with
- 2:25good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.
- 2:30He has helped His servant Israel and remembered to be merciful,
- 2:35for He has made His promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and
- 2:39his children forever. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about
- 2:453 months and then went back to her own home.
- 2:50When it was time for Elizabeth's baby to be born, she gave birth
- 2:53to a son, and when her neighbours and relatives heard
- 2:57that the Lord had been very merciful to her, everyone
- 3:00rejoiced with her. When the baby was 8 days old,
- 3:04they all came for the circumcision ceremony.
- 3:07They wanted to name him Zechariah after his father, but
- 3:11Elizabeth said no, his name is John.
- 3:15What? They exclaimed.
- 3:17There is no one in all your family by that name.
- 3:21So they used gestures to ask the baby's father what he wanted to
- 3:24name him. He motioned for a writing tablet
- 3:27and to everyone's surprise he wrote His name is John.
- 3:33Instantly Zechariah could speak again and he began praising God
- 3:39or fell upon the whole neighbourhood and the news of
- 3:43what had happened spread throughout the Judean hills.
- 3:46Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and
- 3:49asked what will this child turn out to be?
- 3:53For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special
- 3:57way. Then his father Zechariah was
- 4:00filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy.
- 4:05Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has visited
- 4:10and redeemed His people. He has sent us a mighty Saviour
- 4:16from the royal line of His servant David, just as He
- 4:20promised through His holy prophets long ago.
- 4:23Now we will be saved from our enemies and from all who hate
- 4:28us. He has been merciful to our
- 4:30ancestors by remembering His sacred covenant, the covenant He
- 4:35swore with an oath to our ancestor Abraham.
- 4:39We have been rescued from our enemies so we can serve God
- 4:43without fear in holiness and righteousness for as long as we
- 4:48live. And you, my little son, will be
- 4:52called the prophet of the Most High, because you will prepare
- 4:56the way for the Lord. You will tell his people how to
- 5:00find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.
- 5:04Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is
- 5:08about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in
- 5:13darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the
- 5:17path of peace. John grew up and became strong
- 5:23in spirit, and he lived in the wilderness until he began his
- 5:27public ministry to Israel. Oh Jesus, you are that morning
- 5:42light from heaven about to break upon us as we prepare to
- 5:48celebrate your birth tomorrow. Oh Jesus, we love you and we are
- 5:55so grateful that you chose as you saw us floundering down here
- 6:01on this little world of ours, You chose to come to us, to
- 6:06climb up off that throne of yours and to come and be with
- 6:10us. So Lord still, our hearts
- 6:14prepare, our souls focus our minds that we truly can
- 6:20celebrate You. And in the midst of busy family
- 6:24time and last minute preparations and cleaning up to
- 6:28welcome hordes of people into our homes, if that's to be the
- 6:31way of the day. Ah Lord Jesus, I pray that you
- 6:34would steal us and draw us to your feet, to the foot of your
- 6:38throne, so that we can worship you, our King.
- 6:44And we pray this in your name, Amen.
