- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Today we are talking about
- 0:31people and their behavior and us coming to quick judgement on it.
- 0:35So often times I get asked about, you know, how do how do
- 0:40you assess someone so quickly and how can you figure out
- 0:44what's happening? Well, for me, my whole world
- 0:47revolves around emotions and reactions.
- 0:50So mindset is built up of many different parts of this and
- 0:54understanding emotion and which emotion is present is really
- 0:57important. And you can in the moment read
- 1:00people and what's going on. But oftentimes, especially in
- 1:03the work environment, we are given things like personality
- 1:07tests. You know, I had a client who
- 1:09just recently had to take three different tests to get a job.
- 1:13And I mean, this is insane when you start thinking about the,
- 1:16the company is looking for certainty.
- 1:18Like, let's face it, the company is looking for certainty.
- 1:21So they're going to give three different types of tests to see
- 1:23if they can catch the person. Because here's what we know
- 1:25about these tests. While they are effective in
- 1:29certain areas, they are not conclusive.
- 1:32Nothing is conclusive when it comes to human beings and their
- 1:36emotional reactions. Yes, we can figure out threads.
- 1:40Let me be very clear. There may be a thread of things,
- 1:43but change the conditions and the responses there.
- 1:46So what got me really focused on this was, one, my poor client
- 1:51who had to take 3 tests. And two, there's this little
- 1:54phrase that we always use around here talking about, you know,
- 1:57the challenges when your reality runs into your ideology, that's
- 2:01when you're going to have something show up.
- 2:04And boy, isn't that true. Because I am the person who
- 2:08loves all the animals. I don't like to kill anything in
- 2:12the house. I will catch a spider in a jar,
- 2:14put them outside, you know, just always attempting to take that
- 2:19very humane, very spiritual approach to it.
- 2:23And then we have this situation with the chickens where these we
- 2:28have a currently we have a hawk that is gigantic bigger than my
- 2:32smallest dog. And this hawk is coming through
- 2:36like it's a Chick-fil-A Dr. thru attempting to get my girls.
- 2:39Now here's what's really great. My Roosters are on it.
- 2:42They're paying attention. I also bribe all all the crows
- 2:47in the neighborhood to come here and hang out by giving them
- 2:49peanuts, and crows don't like Hawks at all so they will go
- 2:54crazy when they're in the neighborhood.
- 2:56You can tell immediately when there's a hawk around because
- 2:58the crows start screaming as soon as they see it.
- 3:02So yesterday afternoon, this gigantic crow, for the third day
- 3:07in a row, makes an attempt to get one of the chickens.
- 3:10We can hear the crows go off almost instantaneously.
- 3:14The Roosters are freaking out trying to protect the hens.
- 3:18And then you hear the screaming because a hen gets hit.
- 3:22Now, she didn't die, which was wonderful.
- 3:25However, in that moment I change my complete focus and I am no
- 3:31longer the person that doesn't want to kill anything.
- 3:34I want the hawk gone because it's attempting to take my
- 3:38chickens. I open the door to my studio.
- 3:40I scream to Beaufort go, Beaufort go and he takes off
- 3:44running and figures out where the hawk is sitting in the tree
- 3:47and puts his like jumps up onto the tree.
- 3:49Obviously can't climb it, but he's got his feet on the tree
- 3:51barking and the hawk takes off. So the story, moral of the story
- 3:58is chicken is fine. However, we're still sitting
- 4:01here with this belief system that's like in conflict with the
- 4:04reality. And often times this is the
- 4:08case. So when somebody says, you know,
- 4:10how do you do this? How do you test somebody?
- 4:13How do you go through all of this process and know you've got
- 4:16a good person, or I'm being judged for something, or you're
- 4:19judging people in the world very quickly on something?
- 4:23It's very situational, my friends.
- 4:25You have to realize there are multiple, multiple things
- 4:29happening at the same time, which is what makes emotions so
- 4:33tricky. So when you're passing a quick
- 4:36judgment, you've got to be really careful about it because
- 4:39nine times out of 10, that is not the best thing to do.
- 4:42It's observational and I am always certain to tell my
- 4:47clients that while I can give you information about this
- 4:50emotion showing up in this situation, you change the
- 4:53parameters of the situation and everything changes again.
- 4:56So very, very important for everybody to hear when you are
- 5:00working with someone, when you are dealing with someone, no,
- 5:03you are dealing with certain conditions.
- 5:06Now we can look at people and say, oh, this is her or his or
- 5:10their mood overall, this is what they're doing overall, and we
- 5:15would probably be correct 80% of the time, but there's always
- 5:20that factor. So the unknown factor has to be
- 5:24thought of as much as possible because that's how you make sure
- 5:28you're not being judgy for no reason.
- 5:31So hopefully that's helpful. And remember, same thing with
- 5:33you. Don't judge yourself so much
- 5:35because conditions change and we've got to be aware of it.
- 5:38So if we're aware, we can always ride it.
- 5:41But that's the thing, be aware and then you get to choose.
- 5:44All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I'll
- 5:47see you tomorrow. Bye.
