- 0:55Speaker 2: coming up right around eight twenty or so, we're gonna
- 0:57Speaker 2: be opening the phone lines and having you go I
- 1:00Speaker 2: sound off and call in about the worst neighbor that
- 1:03Speaker 2: you ever had. All based off a Netflix show that's
- 1:07Speaker 2: going on right now, So be thinking about it. If
- 1:09Speaker 2: you've ever had a horrible neighbor in your life. We're
- 1:12Speaker 2: definitely gonna want your calls and comments coming up a
- 1:15Speaker 2: little later here, right around eight twenty or so with
- 1:17Speaker 2: jkj All right, So what's this Franklin effect KA raving about?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Well, because here's the thing, Like, have you ever been
- 1:23Speaker 1: in the situation where somebody like compliments something you're wearing
- 1:27Speaker 1: or something that.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You have on right every day?
- 1:30Speaker 1: And well, and immediately it's just like you like that
- 1:33Speaker 1: person a little more, just like kind of catches you
- 1:35Speaker 1: like a little bit like huh. Well, Benjamin Franklin, he
- 1:39Speaker 1: kind of thought differently. He thought the exact opposite would work,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and it kind of did. Ben Franklin would ask enemies
- 1:47Speaker 1: for small favors to make them like him. They actually
- 1:51Speaker 1: call it the Franklin effect. And he said stop pleasing
- 1:54Speaker 1: people instead inconvenience them, and that will make them like you.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So here's the story behind it. It was in n
- 2:01Speaker 1: seventeen thirty seven.
- 2:03Speaker 2: He had a very.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Powerful enemy in Pennsylvania's parliament, right, so instead of flattering him,
- 2:09Speaker 1: he asked to borrow a rare book from his personal library.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Now the man was surprised, but he said yes, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: a week later they were lifelong friends. This story goes
- 2:20Speaker 1: on to say that they were very close, that this
- 2:22Speaker 1: moment is what brought them together, and he actually cracked
- 2:26Speaker 1: a bug in human psychology, the person who did you
- 2:28Speaker 1: a favor will do another one.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Okay, they say they try to.
- 2:33Speaker 1: We try and buy our loyalty with gifts and kindness,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but the real currency is requests, not rewards. And it's
- 2:39Speaker 1: pure cognitive dissonance at work.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So the b I could see this.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Here's why. Because the brain refuses to hold two contradictions
- 2:48Speaker 1: at once, it cannot say I hate him and I
- 2:51Speaker 1: helped him. It results with it rewrites the story for you.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It says I helped him, so he must be worth it,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and it.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Makes you feel that, wow, this person came to me
- 3:03Speaker 2: for something. I have something they need to so it
- 3:06Speaker 2: also feel superior in a way.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Well, and you're more inclined to help someone again if
- 3:13Speaker 3: you've already helped them one time, as opposed to if
- 3:16Speaker 3: someone keeps asking you for help and you're offering and offering,
- 3:18Speaker 3: you start to kind of despise that person. Where now
- 3:21Speaker 3: if they come to you and ask you for help
- 3:22Speaker 3: and you have helped them that one time, you're more
- 3:24Speaker 3: inclined to do it again. Yeah, keep helping that person win.
- 3:27Speaker 3: And Ben Franklin came up with this by doing that
- 3:29Speaker 3: to the enemy. And it's brilliant and love is it is.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And if we think about it, like we love people
- 3:34Speaker 1: for the good we did them, and then we resent
- 3:37Speaker 1: people for the harm we cause them. So if you
- 3:39Speaker 1: act like a doormat, you become convenient, useful, but never respected.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So in relationships they say that this plays out without exception,
- 3:48Speaker 1: like people don't value what costs them nothing.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The Ikea effect proves it.
- 3:52Speaker 1: A crooked chair you built yourself feels like a masterpiece,
- 3:55Speaker 1: make people invest action and their perception of you shifts.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So this was just fascinating to me, absolutely fascinating, and
- 4:03Speaker 1: I've tried to It.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Goes against kind of all logic, it really does.
- 4:06Speaker 1: It goes against all logic, but it makes total sense also, right.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It's almost along the lines of the whole keep your
- 4:13Speaker 2: enemies closer, right that whole thing. Sure, you're actually keeping
- 4:17Speaker 2: that enemy closer by asking them to assist you. They
- 4:22Speaker 2: feel some sort of power in that that they were
- 4:24Speaker 2: able to help you.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And also like you asking them signals a type of confidence.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Well it's that and you're almost like inerior submissive, yes,
- 4:33Speaker 2: an inferior to them, like, oh well you need something
- 4:36Speaker 2: from me exactly, And it makes you feel you that
- 4:39Speaker 2: a little adrenaline.
- 4:40Speaker 3: It puts them on a pedestal. It makes you kind
- 4:41Speaker 3: of think, hey, you know what, maybe I am better
- 4:43Speaker 3: than this person because they're coming to like they see
- 4:45Speaker 3: me as better and.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Then they kind of get to know you, and then
- 4:48Speaker 2: things play out and then you actually are like, you
- 4:50Speaker 2: know what, I kind of like this guy exactly. I
- 4:52Speaker 2: hate him, so we should put his face on money.
- 4:54Speaker 1: You're changing their perception of you, and it's all very
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, calculating, manipulative almost in a way.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But I gotta try this. Who do I hate around here?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Isn't that instantly get you thinking about Okay, oh my god,
- 5:09Speaker 2: who do I hate? And who do I get along with?
- 5:12Speaker 2: And what can I ask them for?
- 5:13Speaker 1: So they're saying like every small request builds a quiet dependency.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Like you said, you know, it's just like they're they
- 5:20Speaker 1: now they're rooting for you.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Like say you hate I don't say you hate your
- 5:24Speaker 2: office manager at work? Maybe go to them and say, hey,
- 5:27Speaker 2: can I get some disinfecting.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Wipes exactly, can I get?
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's like baby steps or maybe And then before you
- 5:33Speaker 2: know it, you're like, hey, can you watch my dog?
- 5:34Speaker 1: And here's the thing is maybe not ask them for
- 5:36Speaker 1: something they're already use doing for you, Like our office
- 5:39Speaker 1: manager is already used to doing that for us. Maybe
- 5:42Speaker 1: go to them and say something like, hey, do you
- 5:44Speaker 1: have mail me? Like break down this email? Like I
- 5:46Speaker 1: don't quite under can you help me with this? You
- 5:48Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like you make them feel like they,
- 5:51Speaker 1: like you said, are a little smarter, but also like
- 5:56Speaker 1: they're helping you, and that makes them feel good too, like, well,
- 5:59Speaker 1: we help people, it gives us a feeling of accomplishment,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and so they associate that with you as well, Like
- 6:05Speaker 1: I felt really good when I helped them last time.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I do it again.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, I just I love it.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Just twisted and I kind of like it.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Like it.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Okay, You're gonna have to really, I think, work hard
- 6:17Speaker 2: at trying to reverse your thinking when it comes to
- 6:20Speaker 2: people that you don't like and you don't want to
- 6:22Speaker 2: be around and you don't want to ask for help
- 6:24Speaker 2: from it. You're gonna have to really rewire your brain
- 6:27Speaker 2: to make this work.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Positively, but that's each party, right, it's a thing.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I think that it works. It's gonna work in a
- 6:34Speaker 2: big way. It works. It doesn't negate the fact though,
- 6:37Speaker 2: that he still wanted to make the nation's bird a turkey.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:42Speaker 1: We can't forget that, Ben.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Sorry, we're not gonna let boy. But this is pretty
- 6:48Speaker 2: solid advice. Pretty good. There you go, making me a
- 6:51Speaker 2: little smarter and a little wiser. This morning yesterday on
- 6:54Speaker 2: the show, I was talking about a Netflix show that
- 6:57Speaker 2: I just started watching and it really intrigued me, really
- 7:00Speaker 2: caught my eye. It's called Worst Neighbor Ever, and it's
- 7:03Speaker 2: a four part docu series on Netflix. Right now, here's
- 7:07Speaker 2: the titles of the four different episodes. Number one is
- 7:12Speaker 2: she Finally Snapped, and then you go into Midwest meltdown
- 7:17Speaker 2: and to fear Thy Neighbor and then the Executor and
- 7:22Speaker 2: it's all really intense, heavy stuff when it comes to
- 7:27Speaker 2: the world of horrible neighbors. I actually just finished episode
- 7:30Speaker 2: one last night. There was a murder involved.
- 7:32Speaker 1: No goodness.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's really nice, deep, but it's a good show.
- 7:38Speaker 2: It's just one of those you're like, how in the
- 7:40Speaker 2: world does this stuff go on?
- 7:41Speaker 1: Out there well, and you can't pick your neighbors. It's
- 7:44Speaker 1: not like they go throughout the community and get a
- 7:47Speaker 1: consensus on people whether they want somebody joining the neighborhood.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It just happens, and then you have.
- 7:51Speaker 2: To deal with this. Yeah, like if you're house shopping,
- 7:54Speaker 2: you move into a new hood, you don't know what
- 7:55Speaker 2: you're gonna get get.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Out around you.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You really don't. It's horrible.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Do people what their neighbors are like before they buy homes.
- 8:02Speaker 2: There is there a way to do that. I will
- 8:03Speaker 2: tell you that when we were looking and somebody would
- 8:06Speaker 2: be outside, like maybe watering their lawn or their bushes
- 8:08Speaker 2: or something, I had no problem wandering up and saying, hey,
- 8:11Speaker 2: how are you, how's the neighborhood and complaints? Yeah, a
- 8:14Speaker 2: lot of kids on the street. Yeah, and you kind
- 8:17Speaker 2: of get some some dirt. We actually bailed out of
- 8:20Speaker 2: a house that we were gonna buy because we were
- 8:24Speaker 2: there for the inspection and I just happened to be
- 8:27Speaker 2: out front and the next door neighbor was there and
- 8:30Speaker 2: he was out like washing his car or something. I
- 8:32Speaker 2: was like, hey, how are you were? You know, we
- 8:33Speaker 2: made an offer and all that he goes, Oh, it's
- 8:35Speaker 2: a great it's a great house. It's a perfect house.
- 8:37Speaker 2: He's like, the only problem is is, well, when it
- 8:39Speaker 2: rains that whole front yard, you should see the bubble
- 8:42Speaker 2: that comes up under the grass. He's like, there's something
- 8:44Speaker 2: about the drainage with that house that the entire front
- 8:47Speaker 2: lawn bubbles up. He's like, you can see it. He's like,
- 8:50Speaker 2: I'm like, oh yeah, hey, thanks for that information. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 2: we actually backed out of that house.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Oh, I wouldn't want to deal with a grass bubble,
- 8:58Speaker 1: like a giant waters a bubble.
- 9:00Speaker 2: In my front yard. I'm like, she is just asking
- 9:02Speaker 2: for foundation issues exactly. Anyway, that's not what we're talking about.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Foundation issues. We're talking about horrible neighbors. So if you've
- 9:09Speaker 2: ever had one, phone lines are going to be wide
- 9:11Speaker 2: open right now three O three six' nine to one
- 9:14Speaker 2: one mix three oh three six nine to, one sixteen forty.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Nine and, yesterday AFTER i talked about This netflix, Show
- 9:21Speaker 2: tiffany wrote us and she, says, Hey, JERY i heard
- 9:23Speaker 2: you talking about That netflix show about the worst. Neighbors get.
- 9:26Speaker 2: This we have one couple on our street that we've
- 9:28Speaker 2: barely spoken to in six. Years we realized a few
- 9:32Speaker 2: years ago that we don't see eye to eye. Politically she's,
- 9:35Speaker 2: like there was never screaming or anything like. That we
- 9:37Speaker 2: just had different signs in our yards during election. Season,
- 9:40Speaker 2: well ever since, then they have installed what has to
- 9:43Speaker 2: be seven or eight security cameras around their, property with
- 9:47Speaker 2: a lot of them aimed straight at our. House they
- 9:50Speaker 2: even mounted two of them way up in the trees
- 9:52Speaker 2: so they can see over our fence and into our.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Backyard we're being watched, constantly she. Says she, says also last,
- 9:59Speaker 2: FALL i happen to look out my kitchen window and
- 10:01Speaker 2: the husband was blowing leaves out of his. Yard but
- 10:04Speaker 2: instead of bagging him, up he was angling the leaf,
- 10:06Speaker 2: blowers so they all ended up in our. Yard AND
- 10:08Speaker 2: i watched him do it for about fifteen. Minutes, oh
- 10:11Speaker 2: when he was, finished he looked, around went back in his,
- 10:14Speaker 2: garage and acted like nothing ever. Happened she. Says here's
- 10:17Speaker 2: another strange. Part the husband over there keeps writing in
- 10:21Speaker 2: this little hand written. Notebook he has it with him
- 10:24Speaker 2: all the. Time anytime someone on our street has company,
- 10:27Speaker 2: over or gets a, package has work done on their,
- 10:30Speaker 2: house or parks in front of somebody else's, house he
- 10:32Speaker 2: stands there and writes things down and then he sends
- 10:35Speaker 2: them all to the h, away these long complaint. Emails
- 10:39Speaker 2: he's documenting. Everything what a weirdo this. Guy she ends by,
- 10:45Speaker 2: Saying i've lived in a lot of neighborhoods over the.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Years i've never lived next to someone who makes the
- 10:49Speaker 2: entire street feel. Uncomfortable loved the show and As tiffany From,
- 10:54Speaker 2: aurora that would get super. Annoying, absolutely that's a horrible
- 10:57Speaker 2: neighbor right. There, yeah that's what the trees and the
- 11:00Speaker 2: cameras up in the.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Trees he must be a heck of a time of.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Parties, uh it's so. Fun what a. Door, yeah, anyway
- 11:07Speaker 2: we're gonna open up the phone. Lines you guys can text,
- 11:09Speaker 2: us you can call. In we want to hear about your.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Neighbors why are they? Annoying why are they? Horrible three
- 11:14Speaker 2: oh three six nine one one mix three oh three
- 11:17Speaker 2: six nine one sixteen forty Nine do you have any
- 11:20Speaker 2: oh one?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Like as soon as we started talking about, THIS i
- 11:24Speaker 1: went right back to When zoe was a little. Baby
- 11:26Speaker 1: we had a condo In. Arvada so this was one
- 11:30Speaker 1: of those areas where it was four two houses rather
- 11:34Speaker 1: they looked identical and they were split into four, condos, Right,
- 11:37Speaker 1: yeah in the middle of this area was kind of
- 11:40Speaker 1: like the courtyard for these town. Homes like we were
- 11:42Speaker 1: all like one, community, right and three of us got
- 11:45Speaker 1: along really. Well we had parties, together our kids played, together.
- 11:49Speaker 2: And it was so much.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Fun but the one couple and they were in the
- 11:53Speaker 1: house attached to, ours of, Course, oh they constantly had
- 11:57Speaker 1: the cops coming. Over they fought all the. Time they
- 12:00Speaker 1: didn't pay their water bill, ever and because we shared a,
- 12:04Speaker 1: house my water would get shut.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Off consistently and they could do.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Well they only lived there for like four months because
- 12:11Speaker 1: the property management company that we all rented. From eventually
- 12:14Speaker 1: they were, like, okay we got to get rid of these.
- 12:16Speaker 1: People many. Problems but those four months that they lived,
- 12:20Speaker 1: there and they were not. Nice they were constantly just
- 12:25Speaker 1: causing problems between. EVERYBODY i, mean, uh it was just
- 12:28Speaker 1: such a. Headache and there's not a lot that you can.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Do that's WHAT i realized in that, moment is just
- 12:34Speaker 1: LIKE i can't make that person pay their water, BILL
- 12:36Speaker 1: i can't make them get.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Along so the cops are coming to our. House and
- 12:40Speaker 2: that's the thing when you watch the Show Worst Neighbor
- 12:43Speaker 2: ever On. Netflix that first, episode you're as you're watching,
- 12:47Speaker 2: it you're, like why didn't the cops do anything about
- 12:50Speaker 2: this crazy? Lady, yeah and their hands were tied exactly
- 12:53Speaker 2: until she finally shot the. Neighbor, yeah, like don't let
- 12:57Speaker 2: it get to.
- 12:58Speaker 1: That but, no it can get pretty intense and there's
- 13:01Speaker 1: not a lot you can.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Do, Right, well let's talk about your guys as crazy.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Neighbors do you have any what's going? On i've got
- 13:07Speaker 2: no beef with none of my. Neighbors and it feels.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Good oh, good how much she's, like less stress that
- 13:11Speaker 2: is to worry, about you, know what's going on in the. Neighborhood,
- 13:14Speaker 2: NOW i.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Bet i'm in the same. BEAT i have not spoken
- 13:16Speaker 1: to one of my neighbors and it's.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Fabulous that's. Good it's so. GREATLY i don't know any of. Them, Hi,
- 13:24Speaker 2: sophia welcome to the.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Show good, Morning, well good morning to.
- 13:28Speaker 2: You so you got a horrible. Neighbor you don't mention any? Names,
- 13:31Speaker 2: yeah tell us about.
- 13:32Speaker 5: It, yes it. Was WHEN i lived down In, houston
- 13:35Speaker 5: we had a neighbor two doors over who was allegedly
- 13:39Speaker 5: selling meth out of the. House her husband left her
- 13:43Speaker 5: to go move To japan as a, doctor so she
- 13:47Speaker 5: moved in with her high school boyfriend who was the
- 13:49Speaker 5: cook at waffle house across the.
- 13:51Speaker 6: Street i'm not at.
- 13:52Speaker 5: That then she ended up like moving in with the
- 13:57Speaker 5: waffle house. Guy and during twenty, twenty everyone was doing
- 14:00Speaker 5: uh wind walks around the neighborhood as, wanted and we
- 14:04Speaker 5: discovered a family of kittens that was living in their,
- 14:07Speaker 5: house so we contacted animal. Control they came ended up
- 14:11Speaker 5: having to contact the. Police uh and they had to
- 14:13Speaker 5: go into the house with hazmat suits on because the
- 14:17Speaker 5: entire thing was just covered in the cat species and
- 14:21Speaker 5: human feces the entire. Floor you could not see anything
- 14:25Speaker 5: in the house. Whatsoever and the icing on the cake
- 14:28Speaker 5: was in her living. Room she had a life size
- 14:30Speaker 5: replica of The Last supper literally just hanging from the,
- 14:34Speaker 5: ceiling like not on the, wall just on the.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Ceiling what what the wildest Neighbor.
- 14:44Speaker 5: AND i was friends with animal, control SO i was
- 14:46Speaker 5: getting all of the, Detail.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Like you hate hearing those situations because of the animals and. Everything,
- 14:52Speaker 2: absolutely is it one.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Of those the kittens got? Rescued one of those.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Things sophia were like nobody knew that that was going
- 14:59Speaker 2: on inside that.
- 15:00Speaker 6: House.
- 15:02Speaker 5: Yep it was all just, like, oh she's kind of,
- 15:04Speaker 5: weird but, whatever like she just keeps to. Herself and
- 15:07Speaker 5: then and then they and all of, that and we
- 15:11Speaker 5: just made that.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Discovery and then the house was toiling in her. Backyard oh,
- 15:15Speaker 2: well you, know as one, does in the.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Middle of the grass that was like four feet tall
- 15:19Speaker 5: because she didn't live, there because she moved in with
- 15:21Speaker 5: Waffle house.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Guys, guys my. FAVORITE i guarantee you that was like
- 15:25Speaker 2: your guys's code name for.
- 15:26Speaker 1: That, guy the guy waffle guy over, there smothered in Covered,
- 15:31Speaker 1: sophia this is what we're talking.
- 15:33Speaker 2: About really really appreciate you calling. In what a great
- 15:37Speaker 2: story that. Was High, eliza how are?
- 15:39Speaker 6: You and there are?
