- 0:03Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, and morning. Welcome, welcome, welcome, and
- 0:07Speaker 1: it's time once again for our program and we have
- 0:11Speaker 1: Shelley cost in with us today and we're going to
- 0:14Speaker 1: have a Nathan Barmy with us today from a perspective
- 0:18Speaker 1: advisors going to talk about financial estates, healthcare and housing
- 0:22Speaker 1: decisions and wow, welcome to the show. We're here to
- 0:25Speaker 1: help seniors and their families and navigate the decisions and
- 0:30Speaker 1: the transitions that come with aging by providing information and
- 0:34Speaker 1: resources and of course connections to trusted pros like we
- 0:38Speaker 1: always do. Shelley, you're so good at this. You are
- 0:41Speaker 1: so good at this. And today again we're talking about
- 0:45Speaker 1: all we should do, but it's very easy to put
- 0:48Speaker 1: it off. Of course, we're talking about planning ahead financially
- 0:51Speaker 1: and making sure that our affairs are all in order.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And we have Nathan here with us here with prospective
- 0:58Speaker 1: advisors along with Shelley Costry senior real estate specialists. Welcome kids,
- 1:04Speaker 1: good morning. Wow, it's great to have you in here today, Shelley.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Before we get started here, and Nathan isn't just simply
- 1:13Speaker 1: someone you met through business. You guys have got a
- 1:17Speaker 1: long standing relationship. I know at least four years, because
- 1:19Speaker 1: I heard you talking about it at all.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yes, Nathan and I go way back, and again, we
- 1:26Speaker 2: started as a business relationship but instantly became much more
- 1:30Speaker 2: than that. And that's important to me is to build
- 1:33Speaker 2: a circle that is a great influence that I can
- 1:36Speaker 2: bring others to. So not only I wanted to bring
- 1:39Speaker 2: him in here today because not only has it been
- 1:41Speaker 2: a big part of our financial planning me personally and
- 1:44Speaker 2: my family, he took extremely great care of my parents
- 1:49Speaker 2: and so not only did I just send him to
- 1:52Speaker 2: him and he walked him through, he actually went with them,
- 1:56Speaker 2: made sure all their bank accounts were set up, set
- 1:58Speaker 2: up their trust wills, and really helped them through all
- 2:03Speaker 2: the way. So I think what makes it so special
- 2:05Speaker 2: and why we became so close is we have a
- 2:08Speaker 2: lot of the same mindset and values, and it's so
- 2:12Speaker 2: much more than just getting the business. It's about helping
- 2:15Speaker 2: these people through life and every aspect of that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Wow, you know, without getting into anyone's individual legal situation, Nathan,
- 2:23Speaker 1: what should people understand about coordinating their financial accounts, beneficiaries
- 2:28Speaker 1: and assets with the real estate plan that they've created.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Well, I think the big thing is you kind of
- 2:35Speaker 3: always hear the old adage like felling to plan is
- 2:37Speaker 3: planning to fill, and that is very.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Very very true.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you've got to take care of it. And
- 2:44Speaker 3: the longer you wait than time works against you. So
- 2:47Speaker 3: you're typically much better off by using time to your
- 2:49Speaker 3: advantage instead of just letting it, you know, kind of
- 2:52Speaker 3: run you over. And so start early if you can,
- 2:55Speaker 3: you know, as early as you can. We all feel
- 2:56Speaker 3: like we're ten foot tall and bulletproof and nothing's ever
- 2:59Speaker 3: going to happen to us, but you never know, and
- 3:01Speaker 3: so kind of plan for the worst and pray for
- 3:03Speaker 3: the best.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Just remember, folks, the other day, I was just finding
- 3:05Speaker 1: my business and then I found out nineteen seventy six
- 3:08Speaker 1: or fifty years ago, it happens to you. It really does,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and it's not a joke. And where does the financial
- 3:15Speaker 1: advisor's role and in the estate planning and the attorney's
- 3:18Speaker 1: role beginning? You know, how do we roll this all together?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Well, I think a lot of times we get people
- 3:22Speaker 3: that come into the office and say, I don't know
- 3:24Speaker 3: what to do, I don't know where to start, I
- 3:26Speaker 3: don't know what questions to ask. And you know, our
- 3:28Speaker 3: role is to kind of point them in the right direction.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You know, we kind of look at everything globally from investment,
- 3:34Speaker 3: tax planning, estate planning, retirement planning, all those different things,
- 3:37Speaker 3: and so I think you've just got to start by
- 3:40Speaker 3: setting up the meetings, asking the questions and saying help.
- 3:43Speaker 3: And a lot of people are shy about that. Nobody
- 3:45Speaker 3: really likes to come in and say here's all my stuff. Help,
- 3:49Speaker 3: And so our role is setting down with them, kind
- 3:51Speaker 3: of establishing their need or want and then kind of
- 3:55Speaker 3: taking it from there and kind of assigning the people
- 3:57Speaker 3: on the team. As Shelley said, you know, there's we
- 3:59Speaker 3: have a lot of great professionals in this community, and
- 4:01Speaker 3: so we've all kind of amassed a good wealth of
- 4:04Speaker 3: circle of trust for lack of a better term, that
- 4:06Speaker 3: we can refer to and know that they're going to
- 4:08Speaker 3: be taken care of.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Wow, Shelly, Yeah, your experience this process personally. I talked
- 4:14Speaker 1: about this about with your parents and has that changed
- 4:18Speaker 1: the conversation that you had with your senior clients and
- 4:22Speaker 1: with through adult children.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely it has. Because you don't have to be
- 4:27Speaker 2: an expert, you don't have to know everything about it,
- 4:30Speaker 2: but you want to know who to send them to
- 4:33Speaker 2: and it's just I think learning and Nathan walking me
- 4:37Speaker 2: through and he's got an amazing team and learning it.
- 4:40Speaker 2: It's never too early to start that. But I learned
- 4:43Speaker 2: really quickly that I wanted My parents had no will,
- 4:48Speaker 2: nothing designated, who what to do, where to go, and
- 4:53Speaker 2: it's just important that we get them set up and
- 4:55Speaker 2: we guide them through that process. Him doing that and
- 5:01Speaker 2: watching him do that, and whether he did it or
- 5:03Speaker 2: he resourced it out, he knew who to go to well,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and so it's just extremely important.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Oh, it certainly is now, Nathan. One of the biggest
- 5:12Speaker 1: financial unknowns as we age is healthcare. Yeah, I think
- 5:16Speaker 1: we all know that too, and the possibility of needing
- 5:19Speaker 1: additional care. Now, how should those possibilities factor into our
- 5:23Speaker 1: long term financial planning?
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think more than likely for most people out there,
- 5:28Speaker 3: health care or their overall care is going to be
- 5:32Speaker 3: one of the biggest expenses in their financial life right,
- 5:34Speaker 3: specifically once you get into retirement and start to age
- 5:37Speaker 3: and everything else.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And so.
- 5:40Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing with that is just get
- 5:43Speaker 3: a plan. Again. You have to be able to talk
- 5:44Speaker 3: about it. You have to look at what are the
- 5:46Speaker 3: resources that I have how am I going to fund
- 5:48Speaker 3: what I want? Am I planning on selling my house
- 5:51Speaker 3: and moving into assisted living? And my plan on selling
- 5:53Speaker 3: my house and moving into more high level care? And
- 5:58Speaker 3: then you have to think about what my plan doesn't work?
- 6:01Speaker 3: You got to have a plan A, B and C.
- 6:03Speaker 3: What if my tenured timeline all of a sudden becomes
- 6:06Speaker 3: a two year timeline. So plan for those contingencies and
- 6:10Speaker 3: I think you'll be a lot better.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Off now, Shelly, this is where your SRES role becomes
- 6:17Speaker 1: really important. A change in health. This can very quickly
- 6:21Speaker 1: become a housing decision.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, And it's knowing when to sell. It's knowing
- 6:29Speaker 2: and planning on that again early on planning for that,
- 6:33Speaker 2: and that's where we come in and help you. Is
- 6:35Speaker 2: this the right time? Where's it going to put you?
- 6:38Speaker 2: You know they also do accounting, so I'll send them
- 6:41Speaker 2: to that. Whereas this going to take them tax wise?
- 6:43Speaker 2: How do we plan for that? What are the different options?
- 6:46Speaker 2: And help walk them through as far as when is
- 6:49Speaker 2: going to be the best time?
- 6:51Speaker 1: Wow, and Nathan, if our listeners remember one thing from
- 6:55Speaker 1: today's conversation, what do you want that to be?
- 6:58Speaker 3: And now I guess that would be it. If you
- 7:00Speaker 3: haven't started the conversation, then start the conversation. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 3: Bartlesfield is a great community with a lot of incredible professionals,
- 7:06Speaker 3: So ask for referrals. Start that conversation with your friends
- 7:09Speaker 3: or among your friends or family and say, hey, have
- 7:11Speaker 3: you done this? Have you talked about this? If so,
- 7:13Speaker 3: who have you used. Our industry as a whole is
- 7:17Speaker 3: very referral based, and that's for a good reason. Trust
- 7:20Speaker 3: is earned, you know, it's not just given, and so
- 7:22Speaker 3: that takes time. So I would say, definitely start the conversation.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And you know, it's not the days of Brewsters millions
- 7:29Speaker 3: where everybody sits down and talks through all the things
- 7:32Speaker 3: and says, here you have to go spend all this now,
- 7:35Speaker 3: you know, be more open about that conversation. And a
- 7:37Speaker 3: lot of people have a problem with doing that, but
- 7:40Speaker 3: the more you visit with them, their problems can be
- 7:42Speaker 3: kind of unearthed and work through. It's more hesitation that
- 7:45Speaker 3: it is really a problem. So just start that combo.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Alrighty, very good. Now, Shelby kind of bring this full
- 7:50Speaker 1: circle for us here. How does Nathan and prospective advisors
- 7:54Speaker 1: fit into what you're building with your program?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well, again, it's just can never start too young. So
- 8:02Speaker 2: I would rather have that in whatever age, even in
- 8:04Speaker 2: thirties forties, is planned for that. Make sure that we
- 8:08Speaker 2: don't want you to be when you're purchasing a home.
- 8:11Speaker 2: We don't want to be married to that home. We
- 8:12Speaker 2: want you to think a big picture, right. We want
- 8:15Speaker 2: you to plan for the future. We want you to
- 8:16Speaker 2: plan for your children. You know what's going to happen
- 8:19Speaker 2: to me? Because we never want to think about that.
- 8:22Speaker 2: But are we prepared if something happens tomorrow? I mean
- 8:27Speaker 2: I had a friend that just lost their fifty six
- 8:31Speaker 2: year old husband unexpectedly, right, so you we again we
- 8:35Speaker 2: never think it's going to happen to us, but it does,
- 8:37Speaker 2: and we want you to be prepared, and you can
- 8:39Speaker 2: never be too young to start that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Oh my goodness sakes, you know, like we said, now
- 8:45Speaker 1: it's probably a very good talk, sure, because we don't
- 8:49Speaker 1: know what tomorrow is going to bring and it's never
- 8:51Speaker 1: really promised, so earlier the better. Now, this is a
- 8:55Speaker 1: great message, daed on true. Now we've been talking with
- 8:58Speaker 1: Nathan Barham Perspective Advisors and Shelley Costure with Senior real
- 9:03Speaker 1: Estate as specialist of course, Today's takeaway don't wait for
- 9:07Speaker 1: a crisis. Yes, right out loud, do it while you're calm.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Everything is all laid out there, and everything too time
- 9:18Speaker 1: is of the essence that it really is. And you
- 9:21Speaker 1: know something, if you follow our program here with Shelley,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you're not going to go wrong. And I've got wonderful
- 9:27Speaker 1: partners like Nathan here, and you're so connected with so

- 9:35Speaker 1: that you can help just about anyone with any need
- 9:38Speaker 1: when it comes to this type of planning.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yes, planning, and unfortunately, if you don't have it, we
- 9:44Speaker 2: can help you. If you are in that crisis, We're
- 9:46Speaker 2: going to get you through it. And the family members,
- 9:50Speaker 2: because it's a lot. It's a lot to deal with
- 9:52Speaker 2: and Nathan and I both just lost loved ones in
- 9:54Speaker 2: the last year and so we know what that's like.
- 9:58Speaker 2: We can relate. But most importantly to me, build your
- 10:01Speaker 2: circle of trust. No, go to somebody who has that
- 10:05Speaker 2: that can guide you through it.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And you are the experienced professionals to start with Shelley. Shelley,
- 10:10Speaker 1: how do we get a hold of you?
