- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. This podcast episode was recorded on Monday,
- 0:04September eleventh, two thousand twenty three. By the time you hear this,
- 0:08somethings may have changed, but we hope you enjoy the show. All right,
- 0:33folks, you are listening to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:36podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world.
- 0:39That's right over ten years strong. We got a great discussion coming your way,
- 0:42as we always do here on our Table Talk show and interview every single
- 0:47week. I gotta say two before we move into any sports, any NFL
- 0:52talk. As you know, and as I stated, just a moment ago,
- 0:56it is September eleventh here, twenty twenty three, twenty two years ago.
- 1:00Our world changed, Our nation in the United States here changed, and
- 1:04a lot of changes happened throughout the world as well. So, however you
- 1:10can do it or would want to do it today, take a moment to
- 1:14honor those fallen heroes, for sure, and take a moment to thank those
- 1:18who are serving in our armed services. My father, who served in the
- 1:21Vietnam era, was a member of the United States Air Force, and he
- 1:26in that generation you know, never have ceased to amaze me in terms of
- 1:29their service public service. So that being said, folks, we're gonna move
- 1:34along here. We're gonna get into some NFL talk this week here. Week
- 1:38one is just about over, just about over. We still got some Monday
- 1:42night football games. But man, a lot of interesting themes going on in
- 1:46the NFL early on in this season. We got a great guest. Let's
- 1:49get right to it. It is great to have it back on the podcast.
- 1:53We love having him. I love talking to him, and I you
- 1:56know what, I love talking to him also when we haven't hit the court
- 2:00button. But it's always fun to talk football with the one and only from
- 2:05sp Nation, mister Mark Scofield. How you doing Mark? I'm doing well,
- 2:08Jeff. It is fantastic to be here. It's fantastic to have NFL
- 2:14NFL football back. I mean, it's just I would just say this on
- 2:16another show. The fall is just awesome, man, I just love fall.
- 2:21I know it always stains to have the summer come to an end,
- 2:24you know, vacations and kids go back to school and all that stuff.
- 2:29But we got all the sports. We got NFL, we got college,
- 2:34we got baseball playoffs coming now, it's just a great time of the year
- 2:38if you're like me and you like apple cider, donuts and fall festivals there,
- 2:42it's a great time of year, so you know. But even better
- 2:45though, as we get NFL Week one. Basically in the books we're doing
- 2:47this on Monday, we get the Monday night game tonight between Bills and Jets,
- 2:51but we actually got NFL games and NFL talks, NFL action to talk
- 2:55about, which after a summer and an offseason of speculation, ship and wonder
- 3:00and hope and all that, we get an actual game resolves to break down.
- 3:04So it's a fun time of year, and it's always fun to be
- 3:06on with you, buddy. I appreciate it, my man, I really
- 3:07do. And man, week one here, holy cow, Mark, we
- 3:10saw so many surprises. It's one of the reasons why I contacted yesterday and
- 3:16thinking myself, you know, boy, we gotta get into some of this
- 3:20talk here about those not just the surprises, but like very eye opening type
- 3:25of storylines right here after week one. And I think, like from more
- 3:29from an offensive standpoint, because I'm like wondering what your thoughts are about how
- 3:34much of what we saw offensive offensively around the NFL, and Week one was
- 3:38perhaps because of rust and perhaps because of the fact that a lot of offensive
- 3:44starters aren't necessarily out there during the course of the preseason, and rightfully so,
- 3:47nobody wants to get injured, you know, we don't want to have
- 3:51star NFL players going down in a preseason. That completely can derail a team's
- 3:57chances at getting to the playoffs or developing certain players. There's a cyclical and
- 4:02domino effect aspect of certain players do go down in the preseason. But man,
- 4:08from an offensive standpoint, we saw some really bizarre stuff here in Week
- 4:13one and a lot of eye opening stuff. What were your thoughts, man,
- 4:16Yeah, I think there's a couple of ways you can look at this,
- 4:18Jeff, And one's a more general football thought as opposed to just an
- 4:24NFL Week one, twenty twenty three thought, is that defenses tend to be
- 4:27ahead of offenses. Like, you know, not let my high school experience,
- 4:30my college experience or anything like that is evidence, but defenses tend to
- 4:35be ahead of the game because they sort of re react, you know,
- 4:40as offenses you're installing things. And then that gets to sort of the second
- 4:43point, which you brought up there, which is, you know, would
- 4:46that players not get in time, A lot of quarterbacks sitting out in preseason
- 4:49because you don't want injuries and things like that. Maybe there's even more rush
- 4:54to knock off. Maybe weather was a factor you had that you know,
- 4:58Cincinnati and Cleveland, New England, Philadelphia, you know some other games.
- 5:01You know, certainly the Sunday night game, weather was a factor there as
- 5:04well. Maybe weather's a factor. Maybe conditioning as a factor in some games
- 5:09where it's just warmer, you know, guys are cramping and dealing with issues
- 5:12like that, so you're juggling lineups and so I think there's a lot of
- 5:15factors of play. But another one I think we should consider is is this
- 5:19a year defenses come back? You know, And as part of our multiple
- 5:26piece, lengthy, extensive, you know, NFL espidation season preview, myself
- 5:30a JPA cost to put together a piece on what we're calling the return of
- 5:33big boy football with more tight ends and running backs and linebackers and stuff like
- 5:39that on the field. But you know, we've seen this offensive explosion over
- 5:42the years. But in two games in particular, that Brown's Bengals game,
- 5:46that Cowboys Giants game, you saw two incredible defenses, Cleveland and Dallas just
- 5:50getting after it. And so maybe as part of the story here is that
- 5:55defenses are going to have an answer for what offenses have been doing. Defenses
- 5:59they're gonna take a step forward this season. Or maybe it's just those two
- 6:02defenses were so good because then you had a thirty six thirty four game between
- 6:05the Chargers and the Dolphins, and so maybe it's not going to be a
- 6:09league wide thing, but maybe we're going to see some good defenses this year
- 6:14sort of dictate terms to offenses. And so I think there's a lot at
- 6:16play, you know, whether it's rushed, whether it's players sitting out in
- 6:19the preseason, whether it's whether whether it's defenses are good. Now, I
- 6:24think there's a lot of things. It could be a factor here, absolutely.
- 6:27I mean, moving along, you're talking about defenses, and when we
- 6:29look right to that Eagles and Patriots game yesterday, it seemed that the Patriots
- 6:33defense really made a lot of in game adjustments in terms of how they were
- 6:41going to not only attack Jalen Hurts, but how they were really going to
- 6:46lock down some of the receiving core of the Philadelphia Eagles, and I thought
- 6:51it was pretty apparent, especially during the course of the second quarter itself,
- 6:57and I wanted to know, being that we are a Philly sports podcast show,
- 7:00I wanted to get your thoughts on what we saw from that Eagles Patriots
- 7:02game up in Foxborough. I mean, Jalen Hurts had what many in the
- 7:08Philly sports world would call a pretty bad game as somebody who is a quote
- 7:12top five quarterback. And we're gonna get to Joe Burrow by the way in
- 7:15a bit, but some of these top quarterbacks in the league not necessarily having
- 7:18the type of games that we thought they might have in Week one. What
- 7:23did you make of both the Eagles offense and the Patriots offense? Is even
- 7:29possible defense as well, Mark, in terms of that particular matchup, Yeah,
- 7:33Jeff, I mean, I think a couple of things stand out about
- 7:36this game. One, if you give Bill Belichick an entire offseason the game
- 7:40plan for your offense, he's gonna come up with some answers, and they
- 7:43did some things, you know, collapsing on the middle of the field,
- 7:45trying to take away some of the reeds and throws. It. Hurts wants
- 7:47to make you know, find some ways to dial up pressure on Hurts.
- 7:51You know, there was a Christian Gonzalez corner blitz late in the game that
- 7:55helped New England get another possession near the end of it. Yep, they
- 7:59did some things obviously, you know, sort of frustrated Jalen Hurts and company.
- 8:03And I think if you're an Eagles fan, you might be a little
- 8:05worried. Not so much that the offense look bad or that Hurts look bad
- 8:09or anything like that. It's just that by facing Bill Belichick week one now,
- 8:13he's should have given a quote unquote blueprint for what you might want to
- 8:16do against the Eagles going forward. So now the teams that they're going to
- 8:20face down down the Stretched over the course of the rest of the season now
- 8:22have a potential game plan. So I think there's some of that at work,
- 8:26you know, giving Belichick an entire offseason to get ready, I think
- 8:30New England's defense is going to be very good. I think that's another thing
- 8:33that Eagles fans should consider. And I think for all my Philly friends,
- 8:37when you get to say November and December, you might look back at this
- 8:39week one narrow victory in Foxborough on a rainy afternoon on Tom Brady Day and
- 8:46realized, hey, that was a pretty good win because I think that's Patriot's
- 8:48team is going to be. I'm not gonna say they're gonna win the division
- 8:52or make a deep playoff run or anything like that, but a Bowl prediction
- 8:54of mine this year is at all four teams in that division in that AFC
- 8:58East finish a five hundred, and I think New England gets there like nine
- 9:01and eight. And I think if you look at that down the road here
- 9:05look back at this week one one, you'll think, yeah, that was
- 9:07a pretty decent win for the Eagles. I think for the Patriots, we
- 9:11saw improvement from this offense. That's going to be the big story if that
- 9:16defense is as good as it looks against the Eagles, particularly after that sixteen
- 9:22nothing early deficit for New England. If that defense continues to play at that
- 9:26eleve, when New England's going to be in games and that offense win games.
- 9:30It wasn't enough yesterday, but will it be enough in games later in
- 9:33the season, or will it be enough when they don't spot the team at
- 9:35sixteen point lead that they're playing it? And so I think we saw some
- 9:39improvement from that offense. I still have some questions about Mac Jones, still
- 9:43some questions about this offensive in terms of create an explosive plays, but it's
- 9:48a market improvement from what we saw a season ago. Absolutely on Our Eagles
- 9:52Are Our Eagles Patriots Previews show, I said to my guest at the time,
- 9:56Mark, I said, you know, Mac Jones, you know,
- 9:58you can't really fall out of a basement window, so's he can. He's
- 10:03got to go up here, and I think we saw that in Week one
- 10:05from him. For sure. How he develops from here on out remains to
- 10:09be seen, but it's gonna be an interesting storyline to follow for sure.
- 10:11And folks, really quick, if you're not following Mark on the Twitter dot
- 10:15com, if you're still on the Twitter dot com at Mark Scofield, he's
- 10:18always been a great, great follow and Buddy, I'm not sure if you're
- 10:22on the threads, I'm not sure if you're doing stuff with blue Sky or
- 10:24mastadon or anything. If you want to get out any plugs for the social
- 10:28site you're on. I think microblogging is almost dead at this point. I
- 10:33do think it's it's almost dead. I mean i've got accounts everywhere. I
- 10:35don't even know what they are. I think I would threads. Is m
- 10:39sho three nine one six or zero three zero nine one six something like that.
- 10:43Yeah, I'm on Blue Sky. But yeah, I mean, X
- 10:46is still the spot for now. At some point, I don't know,
- 10:50maybe we'll just be calling people on the phone again. Who knows, Maybe
- 10:54start giving out cell phone number. Oh gosh, Mark, you called it
- 10:56X. I'm sticking with Twitter. I'm sticking with Twitter. I just yeah,
- 11:01I mean, I still call it Twitter. I don't even know anymore.
- 11:05It's also confusion and depressing. Man, it is, it is.
- 11:07It used to be a great place. Now it stinks. But I gotta
- 11:11tell you what does stink is being a Bengals fan on this Monday. Holy
- 11:16cow, the Browns just taking it to the Bengals twenty four three. Joe
- 11:22Burrow. Okay, let's get into Joe Burrow here. Mark, you had
- 11:24a forty nine percent completion percentage, eighty two passing yards, zero touchdowns.
- 11:31Man, how should we be viewing this Bengals offense here? Joe Burrow and
- 11:35what they just weren't able to do yesterday? Yeah, And I mean I
- 11:39think this sort of goes to what I was talking about earlier, is this
- 11:43is just a story about that Cleveland defense and how they're very good. And
- 11:46you know, there are a lot of people that firmly believe that Miles Garrett
- 11:50is the best pass rusher in the league. There have been some people would
- 11:52say this is the year he makes that step towards defensive player or the year
- 11:56honors. I think we saw that potential on Sunday. I think when you
- 12:01look at Adams a Darius Smith, that gives them in Jim Schwartz, some
- 12:07flexibility up front to sort of play to some matchups up front. There was
- 12:11a play in that game where you had Garrett in a two point stance over
- 12:16the center and he's literally doing the AI Allen Irison crossover before the snap ball
- 12:22gets snapped and uses a eurostep move on the center and gets almost immediate pressure
- 12:26on Joe Burrow. First of all, that's just hilarious. I mean,
- 12:30Miles Garrett is an absolute freak athlete, and to see him doing that with
- 12:33those kinds of movement skills leading to immediate pressure on Joe Burrow, it's just
- 12:37mean. It's not unfair. As an old quarterback I'm just terrified for Joe
- 12:41Burrow. But I think that's the main story here. I think the Bengals
- 12:46are going to be good, They're gonna be fine. But I do think
- 12:50that the big picture here is that Brown's defense. Now, maybe there's an
- 12:54argue to be made about whether about Borrow perhaps coming back a little too quickly
- 12:58from that calf injury, but I think the bigger story is just that Brown's
- 13:01defense and it is going to be very, very good. And it goes
- 13:05to what you were saying earlier in our discussion, just this could be the
- 13:09year of the defenses. This really could be the year of the defensive we're
- 13:11seeing it really could be. I mean, for so long it's been an
- 13:15offensive minded league, an offensive you know minded head coaches are getting jobs.
- 13:20Scoring is up, passing is up, scoring was down. Last year,
- 13:24Russian yards, you know, Russian yards per attempt were up to four point
- 13:30five highest and league history. Do we see that return to the run game,
- 13:33to defensive football. Maybe that's still a year or two away, but
- 13:37could this be the start of that wave? And look, we all know
- 13:41football tends to be somewhat cyclical. Something's in for a while. Defenses adjust,
- 13:46it goes out of style and everything sort of cycles back and around.
- 13:50Maybe that cycles underway. Yeah, and another defense too that we have to
- 13:54take a look at, and they were absolutely dominant yesterday in Pittsburgh, Sam
- 13:58for Cisco forty nine ers, but well, first off, their offense absolutely
- 14:03decimated the Steelers. McCaffrey had one hundred and fifty two rushing yards at a
- 14:07touchdown, Brandon Aiyuk one hundred twenty nine receiving yards and two touchdowns. Brock
- 14:13Purty, he looked pretty good from everything that I saw as I'm watching here
- 14:16in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and I'm wondering if this defense is for real in
- 14:22San Francisco. And on the flip side of that, are we thinking Brock
- 14:26Purti is the real deal here as well? Or do we need to give
- 14:28it some more time thoughts on San Francisco offensively and possibly defensively here Mark,
- 14:35Yeah, Jeff, I was really impressed watching Purty live and then study at
- 14:39him this morning, because first of all, that's a very good Steelers defense.
- 14:43It's very talented obviously the T. J. Watt, but beyond that,
- 14:46Terrell Austin had a couple of plays dial thought. There was a corner
- 14:50blitz from Mink and Fitzpatrick where he had a free run at Purty. There
- 14:54was a play where, you know, this is a great example of the
- 14:56chess match between coaches. You know, you've got Deebo Samuel in the slot
- 15:01on the right, comes in orbit motion into the backfield and runs a swing
- 15:03route to the left side. Kyle Juicetech runs a swing route to the left
- 15:07side. They're trying to move everything that way to throw a backside slant route
- 15:11to Brandon Ayuk, who, as you mentioned, had a huge game.
- 15:15So you're trying to get the defense move in one way and then throw that
- 15:16backside slant. Well, some of the linebackers moved. That slant would have
- 15:20been there, but Austin had TJ. Watt, a great pass rusher,
- 15:24drop off into coverage and get underneath that slant route. And brock Purdy looks
- 15:30quickly to the left, comes to throw that slant. He polls the ball
- 15:31back, but then he sees wat right in that throwing lane, pulls the
- 15:37ball down and hits McCaffrey backside, now front side, basically on a slant
- 15:41route of his own. That could have been a pick. He could have
- 15:43thrown that right to what Austin dialed up something perfectly to beat that play.
- 15:50Purdy beat it, that making fits Patrick free run Adam Purdy somehow feels it
- 15:54coming. It's a blind side Blitz steps around it, hits Samuel and move
- 15:58the chains. Purdy look fantastic to me, and that's a very good defense.
- 16:03The creative that dialed up some schemes to generate a turnover, to generate
- 16:07a strip, sack, fumble and interception, things like that, and Perdie
- 16:08was ahead of it. His mind was able to beat those moments. That's
- 16:11the next step. Everybody says, Look, Shanahan dials such creative stuff up,
- 16:17puts perty in a position to be successful. Schemes guys open. But
- 16:19when defensive coordinators put together something that's supposed to make him confuse, it's supposed
- 16:25to force a mistake, and he's ahead of it and beats those looks.
- 16:29That's when you're cooking with gas as an offense, and so that offense look
- 16:33great. That defense showed no signs of letting up. With Ryan's now down
- 16:36in Houston, that's going to be a scary, scary team. We all
- 16:40thought, look one to fifty two. Right, just take starting quarterback aside,
- 16:44that's the best roster in the NFL right now. You add perty playing
- 16:47at that kind of level, that's a scary team. It's a very scary
- 16:51team for sure. And especially on our Eagles preview show, a season preview
- 16:55show, where we said, you know what, I don't think necessarily the
- 16:57forty nine ers may have it in him this year. In fact, in
- 17:00terms of the NFC West, I'm thinking the Seattle Seahawks maybe at the top
- 17:04there, you know, given something Jeff and I think I was. Look,
- 17:11I predicted I said that the Niners are going to get to the super
- 17:12Bowl, but I actually said that, Look, the Seahawks were going to
- 17:15win the division because of everything that they've done. Yeah, you know,
- 17:18the Nighters will be there, and they're they're talented enough to make that deep
- 17:22run, so althy'll get there in the end. But I was looking at
- 17:23the Seahawks to perhaps win that division. Don't feel too good about that call
- 17:27right now. Not right now. It is week one, A lot of
- 17:30time left again, folks. Talking to Mark Scofield from SB Nation head on
- 17:34over an SB Nation search amount they got out so much great content whether it's
- 17:38articles, tons of podcasts. Sp Nation great place to check out everything in
- 17:44terms of sports. We love our sp Nation sites here at the PSD podcast
- 17:48show. Mark wanted to get into some of the rookie quarterbacks with you.
- 17:52You know, we had talked about the majority of the We had talked about
- 17:55all these quarterbacks in fact, you know, one of the last times that
- 17:59you were on the show as to how they were going to perform. You
- 18:03know, here in the twenty twenty three season, very interesting Week one for
- 18:07the rookie quarterbacks. Bryce Young one hundred and forty six passing yards, one
- 18:11touchdown, two interceptions. C J. Stroud two hundred and forty two passing
- 18:15yards, You didn't throw a touchdown, didn't throw an interception, and Anthony
- 18:18Richardson had two hundred and twenty three passing yards, forty rushing yards and two
- 18:23total touchdowns. I thought, I thought it wasn't terrible. It wasn't terrible
- 18:30from the rookie quarterback class coming in here. What were your thoughts and how
- 18:34do you assess this rookie quarterback class here after week one? I think after
- 18:38week one wasn't terrible is exactly what you kind of want to see these rookie
- 18:44quarterbacks, Like if you're a fan of the Colts, if you're a fan
- 18:47you know, of the Texans, if you're a fan of the Panthers,
- 18:49you wanted to see that these three quarterbacks that the game wasn't too fast for
- 18:55them. And I think that's what we saw. I mean, in a
- 18:56way, contrast that to what we're still seeing from justin field than some other
- 19:00more experienced quarterbacks work moments it feels like the game's too fascially, it didn't
- 19:03feel like on the whole it was too fast for them. I think.
- 19:07You know, with Richardson in particular, you know, if you've seen his
- 19:11passion chart, his spray chart, all but like five of his throws were
- 19:15to the right side of the field. There was a lot of pistol half
- 19:17field reads. That's what we expected, right, That's what Shane Steikin did
- 19:22with Jalen Hurts in year two. A lot of half field reads, pistols
- 19:25and RPO stuff. The proof of concept is there. Yeah, he had
- 19:29the interception. It was a bad read, badthrow, but that's to be
- 19:30expected, you know. Strout his first you forgot to mention he had a
- 19:34completion to himself. His first sclution went to himself, which is this is
- 19:38a fun little tribute question to bring up some day similar to him, like
- 19:42going up against a tough defense in Baltimore, but you know, played well,
- 19:48road game, tough environment. You know, Baltimore's a tough place to
- 19:51play. But I think he accle made it himself well. And you know,
- 19:52same thing with Bryce Young. You know, quick read and throw and
- 19:56that snap throw to Hearst for the touchdown off of a RPO type. Look,
- 20:00the game didn't seem too fast for these three quarterbacks, and I mean,
- 20:03I think the thing to remember is they'll be up in downs moments throughout
- 20:07the season. You might have considered, you know, week one, maybe
- 20:10an up for one or two or all three of these quarterbacks. There might
- 20:12be a three pick game coming for some of these guys. But they'll get
- 20:17better as the year goes on. And I think the big thing for those
- 20:19three teams is that this is a year of developing those quarterbacks. Like you're
- 20:25not expecting one of those teams to make a surprise and run to the playoffs
- 20:27this year. It could still happen, but it would be a surprise.
- 20:32I think the bigger bigger story is and the bigger thing you're hoping to see
- 20:36is when you get to November, are you still thinking yet, we've got
- 20:38the guy? And I think what we saw in week one makes me believe
- 20:41that when we get to November, when we get to December, those three
- 20:45fan bases and perhaps more importantly, those three coaching staffs are all going to
- 20:48think, yeah, we've got the guy. It might not be there yet,
- 20:52but headed into the next two there's reason for hope. Absolutely. And
- 20:56to close this out here, Mark, I always love getting your under the
- 20:59raid. Our takes if for sure whenever you come on the show. So
- 21:03if you can close us out with your biggest under the radar takeaway from week
- 21:07one that we need to keep our eyes on not just possibly week two,
- 21:11but in the foreseeable future this NFL season. What's that? What's that biggest
- 21:15under the radar takeaway for you after Week one? Here? So, I
- 21:18couldn't sleep well last night here in the DC area. We had two bouts
- 21:22of thunderstorm sort of roll through one around one of the morning, the other
- 21:26out four three got woken up by both loud rain and thunder and things like
- 21:30that, And so I'm tossing and I'm turning, and I'm thinking about some
- 21:33of the NFL preview stuff and things like that that we had written. And
- 21:36you know, we had this piece called, you know, one thing we
- 21:38love and one thing we hate for every team, and when it got to
- 21:41the Rams and the carol and the Arizona Cardinals, I wrote the same thing.
- 21:45Basically, I love the weather in those two cities this time of year,
- 21:49but I hate the rosters on those two teams, right right, I
- 21:52kind of felt in as I was tossing and turned and trying to get back
- 21:56to sleep. I felt pretty bad about that Rams part because they went out
- 21:59one yes and didn't in fairly convinced in fashion. And there is a moment
- 22:04in the locker room after the game and Matthew Stafford breaking the team down and
- 22:07said, you ignore what everybody said about us on the outside. It got
- 22:11me thinking, and so I started testing out what I consider a spicy line,
- 22:15maybe a lukewarm take. And I'm not really known for spicy or lukewarm
- 22:18takes. Are the Rams this year's Seahawks? And what I mean by that,
- 22:23Jeff, is this last summer? Right We're all saying, oh gino
- 22:27Smith. He's the bridge to whoever they draft, whether it's Bryce Young or
- 22:32c. J. Shall. They've got Russell Wilson trade, so they've got
- 22:34extra picks to work with. That's a bad roster. It's going to be
- 22:37a bad team. It's going to be a bad quarterback situation. They're just
- 22:41waiting for the next guy who they'll get in this year's draft. Everybody in
- 22:45that building, Pete kiro on Dot said no, no, no, we
- 22:47believe in Gino Smith. We believe in the players in this building. They
- 22:49go out make a playoff run. And now you've got people like me saying
- 22:52they could win the division next year. Ye Now come to the Rams,
- 22:56right, we're all saying the same thing. It's bad roster. You've got
- 22:59Donald and Stafford has been banged up and Cooper Cup's hurt. Now, yes,
- 23:03you've got the best defensive player in the game. But other than that,
- 23:06there are some questions. Maybe they'll be in the Kid Williams Hunt,
- 23:08the Drake may Hunt, whoever QB three is. You know they're going to
- 23:11need a new quarterback in the draft. They're not going to do too well.
- 23:15They're going to be in the sweepstakes for the first overall pick. They
- 23:18go on, they win a Week one against those Seahawks. Are the Rams
- 23:21gonna be this year's Seahawks? A team that sort of gets written off.
- 23:25Everybody says they're not going to be very good, but they make this surprise
- 23:27and run to the playoffs. Now, they got a tough schedule. I
- 23:30mean, they get the Niners this weekend. They got some tough games along
- 23:33the way. But I don't know. In the darker the night, when
- 23:37I was tossing and turning, when the thunderstorms rolling in, I was starting
- 23:40to think, are the Rams this year's Seahawks? I think that's a great
- 23:42take. That is a great thought to end this table talk discussion. Again,
- 23:47folks, Mark Scofield Espnation search out all their content on the innerwebs.
- 23:52They're doing great stuff over there. Mark, thanks so much, buddy for
- 23:55coming on. It was great talking to you. Come back and join us
- 23:57down the road and we'll get into more football with you. My man.
- 24:00I always love a Jeff. It is always a blast to be on.
- 24:03It's great to chat with you during the shows, before the shows, after
- 24:06the shows. It's always a ton of fun. It's great to have football
- 24:08back and it's great to be back with you, my friend. As always,
- 24:11Mark makes excellent points, and I think it's really interesting how we started
- 24:15off the discussion talking about the fact that this could actually be the year of
- 24:18the defense in the NFL. Think about that, folks. Everything the NFL
- 24:22has done over all these years to ensure that the offense is the most dominant
- 24:30aspect of the game of football, of professional football, and if this year
- 24:33is the year of the defense, that could not only be so interesting game
- 24:37by game, but just overall this entire season, like what it would mean
- 24:41actually for the game in terms of its evolution, in terms of its transformation.
- 24:45So I just love the discussion with Mark. He's always fantastic and always
- 24:51given some great little nuggets to think about as we move along in our in
- 24:55our football minds. So all right, that's gonna do it for us here
