- 1:11Barton Henderson: Nice to be with you.
- 1:12Barton Henderson: Nice to be with someone who shares a lot of the same values in business as me.
- 1:16Tom Jackobs: I'm, Thank you for that.
- 1:17Tom Jackobs: And of course I'm really excited to dive in'cause you have a quite an interesting background and I'm really, and I think the audience is gonna really enjoy your story and kinda the different businesses that you've had over the years.
- 1:30Tom Jackobs: Really excited for that.
- 1:32Tom Jackobs: But first, I always like to ask, what's your definition of a heart-led business?
- 1:37Barton Henderson: Ah, cutting right to the chase.
- 1:38Barton Henderson: I like it.
- 1:39Barton Henderson: Getting right into it.
- 1:40Barton Henderson: So my definition of a heart-led business is a business that treats business personally.
- 1:48Barton Henderson: And what I mean by that is I can remember even from a young age, people saying the phrase business is business, right?
- 1:56Barton Henderson: And it always bothered me, and I didn't know why, like at a young age, why I didn't like that phrase.
- 2:03Barton Henderson: And as I got older, I heard it more and more.
- 2:07Barton Henderson: And almost to the point where I actually heard people justify things that I would consider not morally sound decisions by saying business is business.
- 2:19Barton Henderson: And so to me a heart-led business is led by a business that treats people personally.
- 2:27Barton Henderson: Like business is personal, business is not business.
- 2:31Barton Henderson: I really, truly believe that.
- 2:33Barton Henderson: And some of the ways that you could look at it from a very straightforward standpoint is, if somebody comes and says something about your business, oh, this business, they never get back to me or this business, they have a horrible service.
- 2:46Barton Henderson: Do you just go, eh, business is business.
- 2:49Barton Henderson: They just said it, it doesn't matter.
- 2:50Barton Henderson: You go, no, that's personal.
- 2:52Barton Henderson: That's like an attack on me, right?
- 2:55Barton Henderson: And so business isn't business.
- 2:56Barton Henderson: Business is personal.
- 2:57Barton Henderson: So I really think a heart-led business, will lead in a personal way.
- 3:03Barton Henderson: And what does that mean?
- 3:04Barton Henderson: That, that means you've earned your trust.
- 3:07Barton Henderson: And so you need to be a steward of that trust.
- 3:09Barton Henderson: You need to work with integrity.
- 3:12Barton Henderson: And so anytime I hear someone say business and business I just, it's like chalk nails on a chalkboard to me.
- 3:18Barton Henderson: So I, I really believe a heart-led business is a business that treats people personally.
- 3:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 3:24Tom Jackobs: And what a great reframe that is.
- 3:26Tom Jackobs: And in terms of just, and when we had our first pre-interview you, you had mentioned that as well and I've been thinking about that since we spoke.
- 3:35Tom Jackobs: And then I was like, do I ever say that?
- 3:37Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 3:38Tom Jackobs: And I was like, you know what?
- 3:39Tom Jackobs: I think I have, and now I feel bad because you're, but you're absolutely right.
- 3:45Tom Jackobs: Business is personal and it should be, and people use that.
- 3:50Tom Jackobs: It's just business, screwed over my friend.
- 3:52Tom Jackobs: But you know what, it's just business.
- 3:54Barton Henderson: That's it.
- 3:55Barton Henderson: You know, I can remember Tom the exact moment when I was like, oh, I, that is not a good phrase.
- 4:01Barton Henderson: So I know when I was younger I didn't like it, but I was doing a deal.
- 4:06Barton Henderson: It must have been right during the beginning of COVID.
- 4:09Barton Henderson: And the price didn't work and we had already locked in a price with somebody else.
- 4:14Barton Henderson: And the person who was in the deal with me said we found a better price.
- 4:19Barton Henderson: Business is business.
- 4:20Barton Henderson: We're not gonna be able to go with them.
- 4:21Barton Henderson: And I just said whoa, man.
- 4:23Barton Henderson: So you're just saying just'cause there's a better price, you're gonna try to screw over this third party.
- 4:29Barton Henderson: Absolutely not.
- 4:30Barton Henderson: That is not what's gonna go down.
- 4:32Barton Henderson: Business is not business.
- 4:33Barton Henderson: Business is personable.
- 4:34Barton Henderson: And that's when I said, you know what?
- 4:36Barton Henderson: There really has to be a separation of mindset here.
- 4:39Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 4:40Tom Jackobs: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:42Tom Jackobs: So tell us a little bit about your business and what makes it heart-led.
- 4:47Barton Henderson: I guess a couple things.
- 4:48Barton Henderson: So one, my, my promo business is what gave my wife and I the opportunity to do a lot of different things.
- 4:53Barton Henderson: And we grew that company from the community, like really from the community up when we started out in business.
- 5:01Barton Henderson: I was going to 10 networking events a week, 10, 10 a week.
- 5:04Barton Henderson: I'm talking breakfast, lunches, dinners.
- 5:08Barton Henderson: I don't know many people who go to that many networking events and now with, two kids now another one on the way.
- 5:14Barton Henderson: I don't do 10 events a week.
- 5:15Barton Henderson: I do one, maybe two.
- 5:16Barton Henderson: But we grew it up from the community.
- 5:19Barton Henderson: Yeah, and so we grew it up from the community.
- 5:22Barton Henderson: And probably maybe five years in, we found that we had over 80 nonprofits a year that we were working with.
- 5:29Barton Henderson: And so we were like, all right, great.
- 5:30Barton Henderson: How do we really help the nonprofit community and start to interact more with one another.
- 5:36Barton Henderson: We started giving nonprofit discounts and we give back and we volunteer and we do all sorts of fun things.
- 5:41Barton Henderson: And it just framed the way I was brought up in business in that it's a community thing rather than just trying to make profit.
- 5:49Barton Henderson: So in Monmouth County, the area of New Jersey, I'm from.
- 5:52Barton Henderson: It is one of the most nonprofit friendly places in the US.
- 5:57Barton Henderson: Businesses work directly with nonprofits and vice versa, whether it's helping each other fundraise or events or anything.
- 6:05Barton Henderson: Now, this happens all over the US of course, but really there's a special community here in Monmouth County where the business community is totally intertwined with the nonprofit community.
- 6:16Barton Henderson: What really got me more into my passion of a heart-led business would be my men's community, which is Agora Guild.
- 6:23Barton Henderson: And what happened was a few years ago, maybe three years ago, I got the idea in my head that I really just wanted to surround myself with men who were gonna push me, that were gonna make me be the best version of myself.
- 6:36Barton Henderson: So I called five, five people I know, right?
- 6:40Barton Henderson: They weren't even all friends at the time.
- 6:42Barton Henderson: Just five kind of acquaintances, people who I thought, one or two of them were good friends.
- 6:46Barton Henderson: But people who I thought were gonna push me, not just the people that were immediately around me.
- 6:52Barton Henderson: And so we started getting together.
- 6:54Barton Henderson: We met in one of my conference rooms over here every single week, and we just started pushing each other in different areas of life, family, faith, fitness, finance, things like that.
- 7:05Barton Henderson: And the things that came out of that is what really led me to go towards the heart-led business.
- 7:11Barton Henderson: And so we had one guy started talking to siblings he hadn't talked to in two or three years.
- 7:17Barton Henderson: Another guy lost 35 pounds.
- 7:20Barton Henderson: One man literally tripled his business.
- 7:23Barton Henderson: One person says that he saved his marriage as a result of this, and so it was just like, wow.
- 7:30Barton Henderson: There are big things happening because we have a curated group of men who are keeping each other accountable and pushing each other to be better.
- 7:41Barton Henderson: And so one of the guys said, you really gotta grow this.
- 7:44Barton Henderson: And I said whoa.
- 7:44Barton Henderson: This is like the last thing I need.
- 7:46Barton Henderson: This is just like something to help us.
- 7:49Barton Henderson: He said, why don't you try it?
- 7:50Barton Henderson: Why don't you try it?
- 7:51Barton Henderson: And so he pushed me to do it and we grew, we went to another group and another group.
- 7:55Barton Henderson: And so we opened it up to the public about a year ago.
- 7:59Barton Henderson: And now we went from, the first six of us to about 70 guys in the last year.
- 8:05Barton Henderson: And
- 8:06Tom Jackobs: Oh my.
- 8:06Barton Henderson: talk about heart-led like it was literally heart-led because when a guy in the group would tell me, Hey, I lost 25 pounds, or one guy's now lost 70 pounds in our group.
- 8:17Barton Henderson: Or when someone would say, Hey, I have a better relationship now, or a better relationship with my kids or with my wife, or whatever.
- 8:24Barton Henderson: That just jazzed me up.
- 8:26Barton Henderson: I got really excited.
- 8:28Barton Henderson: And it's about as heart-led business as I can think about, because the, it's, we're not measuring in dollars.
- 8:34Barton Henderson: Like we don't measure in dollars at all.
- 8:37Barton Henderson: We measure in wins and achievements for the people.
- 8:41Barton Henderson: So it's it's just been a really great adventure.
- 8:45Tom Jackobs: That's awesome.
- 8:46Tom Jackobs: And yeah, absolutely.
- 8:48Tom Jackobs: When you're in a service type business and you see those transformations that people have, it is really amazing.
- 8:54Tom Jackobs: It just keeps you going.
- 8:55Tom Jackobs: That's, it's so great to see.
- 8:57Barton Henderson: Yeah, you can't put a dollar amount on it, like at one point I started thinking, huh, that person lost 25 pounds.
- 9:05Barton Henderson: How is their cardiovascular health gonna be affected?
- 9:08Barton Henderson: How many more years are they gonna be around for their kids?
- 9:11Barton Henderson: How many more like Christmases?
- 9:13Barton Henderson: Are there gonna be or hanukkah's or what?
- 9:15Barton Henderson: Whatever the point is like how far does this go?
- 9:19Barton Henderson: And so that kind of different quantifying of things just really opened my mind to to movement moving forward.
- 9:26Tom Jackobs: Yeah, and it's not just the number of more years, it's also the quality of those years as well.
- 9:31Barton Henderson: Absolutely.
- 9:32Tom Jackobs: Which you really can't put a price on either.
- 9:33Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 9:34Tom Jackobs: So is this another business of yours?
- 9:37Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 9:37Barton Henderson: So it's turned into a business now.
- 9:39Barton Henderson: Yeah, so Agora Guild is is a business and it's really where we're putting a lot of focus because it's what I love to do.
- 9:46Barton Henderson: I love seeing these transformations.
- 9:48Barton Henderson: And yeah, it's a men's network.
- 9:50Barton Henderson: It's a membership network.
- 9:51Barton Henderson: We have about 70 guys now and we're rapidly growing.
- 9:54Barton Henderson: We're taking on new members.
- 9:55Barton Henderson: Taking on new team members too who are actually helping to grow the mission.
- 10:00Barton Henderson: And it's just really cool to see once you surround yourself with people that have different expectations where you can actually go in life.
- 10:07Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 10:08Tom Jackobs: Now, how does it correlate with your other business the promos business in terms of just the philosophy and your, the way that you approach business in general?
- 10:17Barton Henderson: I think community would probably be the best answer for that.
- 10:21Barton Henderson: And so it correlates because it's like anything, it's if you create a good community, good things will happen, right?
- 10:28Barton Henderson: If you surround yourself with the right people surround yourself with the right clients things of that nature, good things happen.
- 10:35Barton Henderson: I like to use an example of a lazy river versus a raging river.
- 10:40Barton Henderson: And what I mean by that is so many of us have friends who are just friends because of proximity, right?
- 10:47Barton Henderson: So maybe you grew up next door to'em, or maybe you were college roommates with them or whatever, but literally because of physical proximity, that person's your friend, right?
- 10:58Barton Henderson: And that can really have to do with wherever you grew up or wherever you are now or whatever it might be.
- 11:03Barton Henderson: And so I started thinking like, what if we curated our friends and actually went out and got friends that were more in line with us.
- 11:11Barton Henderson: And so it's like a lot of people are living in like a lazy river, if you will.
- 11:15Barton Henderson: And so lazy river's, good, lazy river's, a good place to be.
- 11:18Barton Henderson: You have a beer, you're on a raft.
- 11:21Barton Henderson: Whatever, you're you're going around that river and if if you miss a workout, nobody cares.
- 11:26Barton Henderson: If you're not eating well, nobody cares.
- 11:29Barton Henderson: And so it's fine.
- 11:31Barton Henderson: It's a fine place to be in that lazy river until you realize.
- 11:35Barton Henderson: There's another river out there, like there's a raging river, and in that raging river, there's a boat of men and they're all rowing, like to survive.
- 11:45Barton Henderson: And if you don't row, then you get thrown outta that raft.
- 11:49Barton Henderson: And so essentially in that lazy river, you miss a workout, nobody cares.
- 11:53Barton Henderson: But now you're in this like raging river.
- 11:56Barton Henderson: You meet a guy who owns five businesses, who's working out twice a day, and you're like, wait a second.
- 12:03Barton Henderson: He owns five businesses.
- 12:04Barton Henderson: He's working out twice a day.
- 12:05Barton Henderson: And I have all these excuses not to work out once a day.
- 12:08Barton Henderson: What do I have to do to elevate.
- 12:10Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 12:10Tom Jackobs: And that, that's a great testament to, who was it, Jim Rohn who said, you're the average of the five people closest to you,
- 12:17Barton Henderson: absolutely.
- 12:18Tom Jackobs: if that is who actually said that first.
- 12:20Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 12:21Tom Jackobs: Yeah, that's great.
- 12:22Tom Jackobs: And I recently joined a, a very curated adventure group as well, or just entrepreneur group.
- 12:30Tom Jackobs: And I was at the first meeting and I was like in awe with all these other people, and I was like, I am not worthy of being here.
- 12:41Tom Jackobs: I am totally in the right room.
- 12:43Barton Henderson: That's right.
- 12:44Tom Jackobs: Get used to as an entrepreneur and you have your business, your employees, and people that you're working with.
- 12:50Tom Jackobs: You're used to being the top dog.
- 12:52Tom Jackobs: And if you're not challenging yourself with the people that are around you, then you just go down that lazy river, as you say.
- 12:57Barton Henderson: Totally.
- 12:57Barton Henderson: Tom, I love it that's the right room to be in.
- 12:59Barton Henderson: If you're the, you feel like it's not the right one and you gotta
- 13:03Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 13:04Barton Henderson: to the occasion.
- 13:04Barton Henderson: That's awesome.
- 13:05Barton Henderson: That's a great feeling.
- 13:06Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 13:07Tom Jackobs: Yeah, it is.
- 13:08Tom Jackobs: I forgot what that was.
- 13:09Tom Jackobs: Because I haven't joined one in a long time.
- 13:11Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 13:12Tom Jackobs: So that, yeah.
- 13:13Barton Henderson: That's cool.
- 13:13Barton Henderson: Sounds like a good group.
- 13:15Barton Henderson: Sounds like a good place to be.
- 13:16Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 13:17Barton Henderson: We have guys all the time who will say I almost didn't join the group because I didn't think that I was qualified or something like that.
- 13:24Barton Henderson: And the thing that I say is like everybody has specific things they're good at.
- 13:31Barton Henderson: And there's different ways that different people can help one another.
- 13:34Barton Henderson: So the guy who just sold his company for 20 million, he might be outta shape.
- 13:39Barton Henderson: And then the young guy just starting out, he might be going to the gym five days a week so they can connect and help each other somewhere.
- 13:45Barton Henderson: Or maybe someone's got a really great relationship.
- 13:49Barton Henderson: They can teach you how to be, a better husband.
- 13:52Barton Henderson: Whereas you can teach them about nutrition, what, whatever it might be.
- 13:56Barton Henderson: But I think I think the feeling you got Hey, I'm in the right room because of that, is awesome.
- 14:02Barton Henderson: But a lot of people get the opposite and they go, Ooh, maybe I shouldn't be in this room.
- 14:06Barton Henderson: Let me go the other way.
- 14:08Tom Jackobs: Exactly.
- 14:09Tom Jackobs: That's the key to growth is to challenge yourself.
- 14:13Tom Jackobs: And by being in those different rooms that are gonna challenge you,
- 14:15Barton Henderson: Totally.
- 14:16Tom Jackobs: we'll definitely do that.
- 14:17Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 14:18Tom Jackobs: So let's shift gears a little bit, Bart, and talk about everybody's favorite topic, money and how you make profit and be okay with making a profit with a heart-led business.
- 14:30Tom Jackobs: How have you reconciled this a heart-led.
- 14:33Tom Jackobs: It's all about passion, but I got bills to pay.
- 14:37Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 14:37Barton Henderson: Great question.
- 14:38Barton Henderson: A couple things.
- 14:39Barton Henderson: So one thing that I realized early on interestingly, is that without some skin in the game, there's no buy-in almost, right?
- 14:50Barton Henderson: So when we started out, our group.
- 14:53Barton Henderson: The five or six of us or whatever it was free.
- 14:56Barton Henderson: And it was good.
- 14:58Barton Henderson: Worked well.
- 14:59Barton Henderson: But then the guys were like, we gotta amp this up a bit.
- 15:01Barton Henderson: And the group is the one themselves who came up with the idea of we gotta pay for this.
- 15:06Barton Henderson: I was like, oh, wow.
- 15:07Barton Henderson: That's really interesting.
- 15:08Barton Henderson: And what we find is that by having some kind of monetary buy-in, it keeps people more accountable.
- 15:16Barton Henderson: It keeps people like they wanna log in for those weekly meetings and make sure that they're getting their value out of it, essentially.
- 15:24Barton Henderson: There's that piece of accountability which is a big piece of it.
- 15:28Barton Henderson: And then it allows you to grow, like to grow the mission.
- 15:31Barton Henderson: A lot of the guys in the group the one common denominator is that we're open-minded, right?
- 15:38Barton Henderson: And so in regards to open-minded there's all sorts of different mentality, strategies, places we wanna go.
- 15:46Barton Henderson: But in general, we all believe that there should be a healthier world.
- 15:51Barton Henderson: It should be in more open-minded.
- 15:53Barton Henderson: And the ability to then take those dollars and grow the group and grow people who want to support more organically grown food, healthier fitness.
- 16:06Barton Henderson: Helping people grow their business.
- 16:08Barton Henderson: When you make more money, you can then grow the mission and then further grow the entire movement essentially.
- 16:15Tom Jackobs: Yeah, I think a lot of heart-led business owners forget that.
- 16:20Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 16:20Tom Jackobs: When they start their business and things, they're like, oh, I can't really charge people for this, or, they make all the excuses in the world.
- 16:27Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 16:28Tom Jackobs: But then at the end of the day, if they're not making a profit, they're not enjoying the work, they're struggling and they're not able to show up fully for their clients or their family, and they're not able to sustain that for very long before they have to shut it down, and then nobody gets helped.
- 16:44Barton Henderson: Yeah, that, that's exactly it.
- 16:46Barton Henderson: And that's a good point because eventually you'll hit a tipping point where it's like, oh I really gotta work on this, eh, but I do have to make money.
- 16:54Barton Henderson: And you're like can I really go over here and work on this?
- 16:56Barton Henderson: Or do I have to go do the other thing that makes money?
- 16:58Barton Henderson: If you can make it one and the same, then you can give it a whole lot more time and attention.
- 17:04Tom Jackobs: That actually came up on the last interview that I had as well is that when you are, working towards a goal, if it is part of your purpose and your passion, when you have those hard times, you're gonna, you're gonna go through it.
- 17:19Tom Jackobs: But if you're only just chasing the dollars and it's just it's something that's trending right now, it's oh yeah, I'm gonna get on, drop shipping.
- 17:27Tom Jackobs: Because there was no purpose behind it, but I saw all these other people making tons of money on dropshipping.
- 17:31Tom Jackobs: I was like, oh, I gotta get in on that.
- 17:33Tom Jackobs: It was a disaster because I, things got difficult and I was like, ah, screw it.
- 17:38Tom Jackobs: I don't wanna do this
- 17:39Barton Henderson: Yeah,
- 17:40Tom Jackobs: because there was no purpose.
- 17:41Barton Henderson: That's it.
- 17:41Barton Henderson: No, no passion.
- 17:42Barton Henderson: No passion behind it.
- 17:43Barton Henderson: One thing that when I looked back in retrospect a little bit, that was different about my path when I was in law school or after law school or anything of that nature, was I've always, and I don't know how or why exactly, but I've always chased freedom over money.
- 18:00Barton Henderson: Meaning it's more important to me that on a Wednesday I can go to the park with my kids, or that on a Thursday I can go do something with my wife than it is to make more dollars.
- 18:13Barton Henderson: Like freedom was always a really critical thing for me, and I find if you chase things like passion or freedom that everything else will fall in line.
- 18:25Barton Henderson: So freedom's what I particularly was chasing early on, and I think that just became my North star.
- 18:32Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 18:33Tom Jackobs: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:34Tom Jackobs: And at the same time, I wanna create some reality in, in here as well as, it's not like you just have your passion and money.
- 18:40Tom Jackobs: You also need to have some business acumen and or find a mentor, find the books.
- 18:46Tom Jackobs: Do what you need to do to learn about business if you're serious about helping people in your purpose.
- 18:52Barton Henderson: Key word you said there is do right.
- 18:55Barton Henderson: Do what you need to do.
- 18:56Barton Henderson: And that's, that can't be more key.
- 18:59Barton Henderson: So many men, so many people in general will start a business and wonder why no one's walking through the door.
- 19:07Barton Henderson: We actually had a session this morning.
- 19:09Barton Henderson: It was our weekly Agora Guild meeting.
- 19:11Barton Henderson: 7:00 AM every Thursday is when we do it.
- 19:13Barton Henderson: And we had two, two two members walk through what lead systems look like.
- 19:20Barton Henderson: And so they were talking about I do 150 calls a week.
- 19:24Barton Henderson: I set 15 meetings a week.
- 19:27Barton Henderson: This is what you need to do to start getting business through the door.
- 19:30Barton Henderson: And the reason I bring that up is to your exact point if you're talking to one person or two people, or three people a week, no matter how passionate you are, it's not gonna, it's not gonna be sustainable.
- 19:42Tom Jackobs: It's not gonna move the needle unless they're like super wealthy.
- 19:45Tom Jackobs: But even then you need to do your prospecting.
- 19:48Tom Jackobs: You need to talk to more people.
- 19:50Tom Jackobs: And we laughed at the top of the show where, you know, 10 networking events a week is a little overkill, but it got you to where you are today because you made all those connections and you were able to build a couple businesses around those connections.
- 20:07Barton Henderson: That's the first thing that I like to say to every new business owner, which is if you're not getting out there and networking.
- 20:14Barton Henderson: There's no number of dollars you can throw at marketing on Instagram or Facebook or whatever.
- 20:21Barton Henderson: Or look, you'll make the mistake everyone does.
- 20:23Barton Henderson: Throw the dollars out there.
- 20:25Barton Henderson: Waste'em.
- 20:26Barton Henderson: If you're not belly to belly networking with people, you're not doing the right thing to start to get leads in the door.
- 20:31Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:31Tom Jackobs: And then a lot of people misunderstand what that networking is all about.
- 20:35Barton Henderson: Mm-hmm.
- 20:35Tom Jackobs: Even show isn't really about network.
- 20:37Tom Jackobs: But what have you found to be the most effective way of connecting with people at a networking event?
- 20:43Tom Jackobs: Because I for me personally, before, if I ever heard, like 10 years ago networking event, I've been,
- 20:50Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 20:51Tom Jackobs: No, I'm introverted.
- 20:52Tom Jackobs: I'm not, not gonna go.
- 20:54Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 20:54Tom Jackobs: But I was I did it for five, every Wednesday morning at seven o'clock, and it was great.
- 21:01Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 21:01Tom Jackobs: Really built the business.
- 21:03Barton Henderson: Absolutely.
- 21:03Tom Jackobs: It's crazy.
- 21:04Tom Jackobs: So what would you tell somebody that's doesn't wanna do networking?
- 21:07Barton Henderson: I think to your point, it's everyone thinks of the most cringey thing, which I still see from time to time.
- 21:12Barton Henderson: And the most cringey thing is, and it happens all the time, is you get to an event and someone says hi, this is my name.
- 21:19Barton Henderson: And they hand you a business card, boom.
- 21:22Barton Henderson: And you go, oh, that is not how you wanna connect with somebody.
- 21:27Barton Henderson: What am I gonna do with this business card?
- 21:29Barton Henderson: Like, why, I don't even know what you do.
- 21:31Barton Henderson: And so literally people, hi, this is my name, and they hand you the business card.
- 21:34Barton Henderson: So the first thing that I do, which which is out of the ordinary, is everybody in a networking event will go, oh, what do you do?
- 21:42Barton Henderson: What do you do?
- 21:43Barton Henderson: What do you do?
- 21:44Barton Henderson: So I like to suggest to people who haven't been to networking too much or are not comfortable, come up with a unique question.
- 21:51Barton Henderson: So I always like to hear, what do you do for fun?
- 21:55Barton Henderson: I like to ask people, what do you do for fun?
- 21:57Barton Henderson: And it's I just hit someone in the face.
- 22:00Barton Henderson: I'd be like, wait, fun, what?
- 22:02Barton Henderson: I don't know what I do for fun.
- 22:03Barton Henderson: So they'll usually answer with whatever they do for work.
- 22:07Barton Henderson: I'll be like no.
- 22:08Barton Henderson: I asked you what you did for fun.
- 22:09Barton Henderson: I didn't say, what do you do for work?
- 22:11Barton Henderson: And if it's one and the same, great.
- 22:12Barton Henderson: But yeah, exactly.
- 22:14Barton Henderson: So that, and then the real key to making it work though, and I'm sure you've heard this many times, but I really do mean this.
- 22:24Barton Henderson: Of all the people I know who are very successful in business and very successful networkers, it's giving first.
- 22:31Barton Henderson: So give.
- 22:31Barton Henderson: So there's this you've heard of Karma before, right?
- 22:34Barton Henderson: There is a whole population of people in the United States.
- 22:38Barton Henderson: I don't know how many people.
- 22:40Barton Henderson: Let's say a large percentage of people who don't believe in karma, right?
- 22:44Barton Henderson: They go, ah, karma's, this fake, amorphous thing.
- 22:49Barton Henderson: Karma is 100% real unequivocally, scientifically, if you ask me.
- 22:55Barton Henderson: And what I mean by that is, if I go to a networking event and I meet 20 people and I give those 20 people a lead, I literally say, Hey, great to meet you.
- 23:05Barton Henderson: Janine, this is my friend John.
- 23:08Barton Henderson: You guys might be able to work together.
- 23:10Barton Henderson: Boom.
- 23:10Barton Henderson: So if I do that 20 times.
- 23:14Barton Henderson: You think that one of those 20 people or a percentage of those 20 people are going to want to give a lead back?
- 23:20Barton Henderson: It's human nature.
- 23:21Tom Jackobs: A hundred percent.
- 23:22Barton Henderson: And so when people tell me, oh, I don't believe in karma.
- 23:24Barton Henderson: It's you're not open your eyes like, like it's human nature.
- 23:28Barton Henderson: Karma is human nature.
- 23:30Barton Henderson: And so if you give, people want to give back, right?
- 23:35Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 23:35Tom Jackobs: The law of reciprocity is, yeah, so key.
- 23:38Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 23:38Tom Jackobs: Absolutely.
- 23:40Tom Jackobs: Love the question.
- 23:41Tom Jackobs: Love the giving.
- 23:42Tom Jackobs: And the question I think is really key.
- 23:44Tom Jackobs: 'cause that's, you, it's kinda the pattern interrupt, right?
- 23:48Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 23:49Tom Jackobs: I used to say, tell me about your last vacation.
- 23:52Barton Henderson: Ah love it.
- 23:52Tom Jackobs: Where'd you go?
- 23:53Barton Henderson: Love it.
- 23:54Tom Jackobs: That's it.
- 23:54Tom Jackobs: it's something
- 23:55Barton Henderson: personal.
- 23:56Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 23:56Tom Jackobs: That you want, what do you do for fun?
- 23:58Tom Jackobs: Where is your last vacation?
- 23:59Tom Jackobs: It's all non-work related and gets people to go,
- 24:03Barton Henderson: Yeah.
- 24:04Tom Jackobs: good question.
- 24:05Tom Jackobs: And
- 24:05Barton Henderson: That's great.
- 24:06Tom Jackobs: stop.
- 24:06Tom Jackobs: And they'll remember you as well as the guy with a weird question.
- 24:10Barton Henderson: That's it.
- 24:11Barton Henderson: Yeah, that's a good one.
- 24:12Barton Henderson: I like that.
- 24:13Barton Henderson: Where was your last vacation?
- 24:14Barton Henderson: Very good.
- 24:15Barton Henderson: Yeah?
- 24:15Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 24:17Tom Jackobs: Awesome.

- 26:42Tom Jackobs: And we'll put a link to that book as well into the show notes, so if people are interested.
- 26:47Tom Jackobs: I put that into my audible last time we spoke as well.
- 26:50Barton Henderson: Ah.
- 26:50Tom Jackobs: Can't wait to really dive into it.
