- 0:00SPEAKER_01: I gotta read you know, in in the case of Merle's text, boy, it just summed it up in my brain for me.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: HOAs are really just a uh it is a VFW hall in your neighborhood where you get to go to bench.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: For ritzy people.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: For ritzy people.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Is there any HOA even around here?
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Well, Merle has one.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: He goes, I know that there's an HOA situation down uh my way.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Uh no idea why why the roads are horrible.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Now, that being said, boy, does that kill me.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Because briefly, when I lived in Cleveland, I lived in an area that had an HOA.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: And they were all hellbent on redoing this sign into the neighborhood.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Whoa, sign in?
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: The sign in, not signing in.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: The sign in.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Like welcome to Whispering Pines or whatever it was.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I thought you meant I had to.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: What's the name of my trailer park?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Shut up! I thought you meant I had to sign in.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking, no way.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: What am I getting a curfew again?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Like I'm 17?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: The sign on the way in.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: My parents have that.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Theirs is Braymore.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Braymore.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: And like Merle's saying with the roads, they will be down there, they will lay restrictions out.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: They'll be like, this is the new dudes, and we're gonna do this, and then they never do anything, and you're just like, oh my god.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: But then they start bitching about full-size candy bars for Halloween because you don't want to put somebody else off.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Well, who cares?
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: It does not bother.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: If you're if you live next to me and you're giving out full-size candy bars, good for you.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: I still know the kid's gonna take my fun size uh three musketeers and be happy.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But HOAs, that's all they want.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: They want control, they want everyone to be the same.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I yeah.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I do love this.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I don't see Allie's parents being in an HO or family in an HOA.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: My parents are probably not not that my parents are white trash, but they're probably the least HOA kind of family.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they can play it to the face, but I think behind the scenes they're like, what a crocodile.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, it is such it's such a croc.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Although when your parents retire, that is part of their drama.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Well, it's something to do.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Um, let's see.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, this one's funny.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: My wife grew up in Hawthorne Court.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Back then, some did full-size Hershey bars, and believe me, the kids found out, switched out the costumes.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Now that's when you gave them raisins instead.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all right.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: That is really funny.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: That is true.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: All three of my kids grew up in our little neighborhood of 13 houses, and one neighbor in the very, very, very back of the circle that we lived in would always give out full-size candy bars if you were a kid that grew up in Pine Circle.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: This is the second one this morning.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, somehow they know the kids.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: We're uh, and then it was a small little neighborhood, and my kids always loved it.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Great, great childhood there.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: What's worse?
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: You have two bowls of candy.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Here you are, a little kid walking up.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: You're you're old enough to be the one uh a little kid that observes.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Not little, little kid, but like old enough to know.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Let's say 10.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: There's two candy bowls.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: There's the one of the fun size, there's the one of the full size.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: All of a sudden, the kid standing right behind you gets a full size, you get a fun size, but he's the neighbor down the street.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I think how this happens is because you're always in the door when you're giving out the candy.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I think that you really catch on to it when I bring my friend who's not from this neighborhood.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And it's always the, hey, wait a second, how come you got the full-size Snickers?
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: But my girlfriend that I brought is just getting the fun size.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Well, because you brought her from another neighborhood.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Um, and then this one, and I love this, but this is interesting.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: I can't believe this actually happens.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: We have a house in our neighborhood that is all Halloween.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: They allow the kids to come inside the house and tour all the scary stuff that they have on the main floor and in their basement.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: That's a little crazy.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And then they're leaving, they get a full size, and when they're leaving, they get a full-size candy bar.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: No way.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: My kid would not be going in that house.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I don't care how sweet if it's Grandpa Jones.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know anyone.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's funny you say that.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: So my house has history, and this is before I owned it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: The gentleman that owned it many, many years.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Now, we're talking decades ago.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Like in the 90s, right?
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And before.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Um, they used to do that Halloween setup where people would come in the house.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Your house is actually perfect for this because Scott's you walk in the bottom of the house.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: You can go there or through the top.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I don't want to say it's a basement.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: What would you Well, that's a second living room.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And and I mean it's it's a whole it's a whole second house downstairs.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: It's like uh it's like a rec room or a den, and that would be perfect for a haunted house.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Well, I remember stories, hearing the stories, so I don't remember who told me this, that that used to happen.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Now, you have to go back.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: We're talking 70s, 80s that that would have happened.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Innocence was still alive.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Well, no, it was before the internet came around and tell us the guy was really touching people.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: And he wasn't.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: No, my homeowner was not.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: My the old homeowner was not.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: But there's too many of that.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't I know today.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: That's I could not if my kid, if you want my kid to come tour your house and even go in your basement, I'm coming too.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: There was one exception.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And by the way, and I'm and I'm hiding my shift.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: There uh I have a shift, I don't know.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: Well, I well, I better hide that than the other thing that's making noise in your nightstand.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Uh that's scary too.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Um but uh is it well uh but uh there was one exception to this.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: The first couple years, and we used to hang out with these people, used to chat with them uh around this time of year.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: They used to have the house in Corning.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: And it was they made their house into a haunted house.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Then they eventually moved to like an actual building to do it.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Gosh, I don't remember who this is.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but back to the HOA thing while you're thinking of that.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: My neighbor complained that my kids were singing on the way back to the school bus.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I'm handing out kazoos for Halloween.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Oh by God, yes.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Can anybody remember the the it was only within the past it's within the past 20 years.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: But it was this house in Corning.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: And I could come in.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Yes, they would actually set their whole house up as a haunted house, and it was literally a line down the street.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Are you talking about Kingsbury?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, I went to that.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Did you do it when it was in their house?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, I did.
- 6:15unknown: You went into their house.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, I just it was a great setup.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Wait, I was just saying, I we're not going in the house, and I went to the house.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Well, that was but that was different.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: That was that was set up as a haunted house tour with parents and everybody going through together.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Yes, because I remember we gave a couple canned goods.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: They weren't accepting money.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: It was for food, you're right.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: They were donating food to the food bank or something years ago.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And then they ended up They did move into like an actual building for a while.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I think they moved into the Value Home Center, which I think is torn down now, right?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Most of that plaza is gone.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So that's where they moved into that, and then at one point it was Pookie's Little Bridges.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember all that.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: That was wild.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So that was the one exception to going into somebody's house because it was done like a full and and you wanted the parents to go through.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Like it wasn't like, hey, drop your kids off and you guys.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: And we'll take them in the basement.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Not doing that.
