- 2:42Speaker 2: Hoby Baker Winner there for the Gophers way back in
- 2:47Speaker 2: the day, and they do a really good job. So
- 2:51Speaker 2: I ran into Tom at Tommy Kramer's house the signing
- 2:56Speaker 2: that I was at last month and I hadn't seen
- 2:58Speaker 2: Tom in years, and you know, we caught up exchange
- 3:03Speaker 2: numbers and he is on the show tonight to talk hockey.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So with that said, and with our wonderful sponsors Seventh
- 3:10Speaker 2: Avenue Pizza, of course, we are just gonna get to
- 3:13Speaker 2: it because we got Tom on for about forty forty
- 3:16Speaker 2: one minutes, so let's just get to it. Here we
- 3:19Speaker 2: are talking hockey.
- 3:21Speaker 5: You wanted it, you got it.
- 3:23Speaker 2: On the Sports Done Right Podcast. I am Vince Right
- 3:25Speaker 2: to Sports Governor. And here we go with Tom Holler
- 3:29Speaker 2: of the Let's Play Hockey Podcast. All right, people, what's
- 3:34Speaker 2: going on? Vince Right, Sports Governor, Sports Done Right Podcast
- 3:38Speaker 2: tonight tonight, My friends, this guest we go back. Sheez
- 3:44Speaker 2: Man thirty years thirty five something weird like that exactly,
- 3:50Speaker 2: Tom Holler, Ladies and gentlemen. He is co host of
- 3:54Speaker 2: the Let's Play Hockey podcast. Check him out on YouTube
- 3:57Speaker 2: over there with mister Brian Bonden, former Hobie Baker Award
- 4:02Speaker 2: winner and hey me and town. Like I said, go
- 4:05Speaker 2: way back. He was friends with my ex wife and
- 4:08Speaker 2: another group of friends down there with Ona States. Shout
- 4:11Speaker 2: out to the Warrior Nation. There you go, exactly, and Tom,
- 4:18Speaker 2: what's been going on?
- 4:19Speaker 6: My man?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Good to see you, Good to.
- 4:21Speaker 5: See you of any thanks for the invite.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, man, hey there we go. All right, Hey, well
- 4:28Speaker 2: let's let's talk hockey. So Minnesota Wild coming off the playoff,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, finally got passed the first round, a lot
- 4:38Speaker 2: of excitement going in, you know, and I know I'm
- 4:42Speaker 2: kind of playing catch up here, but I really wanted
- 4:44Speaker 2: to get your thoughts kind of that end of the season,
- 4:47Speaker 2: how it all went down, the disappointment of losing that
- 4:51Speaker 2: second round series when you know, obviously the state was
- 4:54Speaker 2: on fire. But you know, what were your thoughts? What
- 4:57Speaker 2: did you see in that last series?
- 5:01Speaker 7: Well, you know, the Avalanche won the President's Cup for
- 5:07Speaker 7: a reason. They've got McKinnon, mccarr, They've got the depth.
- 5:12Speaker 5: They go three four.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Lines deep, and that real separator, you know, is the
- 5:18Speaker 7: depth when you get scoring in that third and fourth line,
- 5:22Speaker 7: that separates everything else because your top lines and their
- 5:26Speaker 7: top lines you can kind of cancel each other out.
- 5:31Speaker 7: The Wall of Saint Paul, who I call Pink Floyd
- 5:35Speaker 7: had a great run and that's another equalizer. But you know,
- 5:40Speaker 7: the Avalanche just had just a little bit better depth,
- 5:44Speaker 7: and they had an easier time in the first round.
- 5:48Speaker 7: I think we were obviously without Eck and without Brodean,
- 5:54Speaker 7: we struggled because your defensive structure is just not the
- 6:00Speaker 7: same without those two stalwarts, right, and that that really
- 6:06Speaker 7: hurt us because we were exposed and third and fourth
- 6:10Speaker 7: liners are now playing first and second line. And I
- 6:13Speaker 7: think mccarren, much as we liked his edition last year
- 6:17Speaker 7: and glad that he resigned, he's not a second line center.
- 6:21Speaker 7: And I think in that fourth and fifth game he
- 6:25Speaker 7: was playing second line center, and that's just that's not
- 6:28Speaker 7: going to work, my friend. So we ended up out physical, outscored, outclassed.
- 6:34Speaker 7: It was great to get that monkey off our back.
- 6:37Speaker 7: You know how it is here in Minnesota. We take
- 6:40Speaker 7: these little victories and get excited because it's what it's
- 6:43Speaker 7: what we got.
- 6:44Speaker 5: So it was fun. It was a great run.
- 6:47Speaker 7: This team has got a great young core, Boldie Capriso,
- 6:55Speaker 7: who I still think is young, Hughes and he will resign.
- 7:02Speaker 7: We'll get to that in a minute. Faber, all those guys.
- 7:07Speaker 7: We've got the core. We just got to get the
- 7:09Speaker 7: right depth. And I think you've seen coming out of
- 7:14Speaker 7: that Colorado series I think Billy g Wild general manager,
- 7:19Speaker 7: really took a look at some of the veterans who
- 7:22Speaker 7: were older, a little bit slower, not as effective.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's kind of where I was going with it, because
- 7:30Speaker 2: there's been talk of a youth movement here with the Wild.
- 7:34Speaker 7: Yeah, and that probably should have started two three years ago,
- 7:38Speaker 7: to be honest. But Billy's very loyal to his veterans.
- 7:41Speaker 5: You got, you got to give him that.
- 7:43Speaker 7: But sometimes you can overdo that loyalty a little bit,
- 7:46Speaker 7: of course, because they're just and you know, you don't
- 7:50Speaker 7: need to sign guys for five and six years. You
- 7:53Speaker 7: can sign guys for three. And if they're looking for
- 7:56Speaker 7: that much term and they're already thirty four to thirty five,
- 8:00Speaker 7: maybe it's time to part weiys, Vinnie.
- 8:03Speaker 2: No matter how hard it is, it's a business. And
- 8:06Speaker 2: you know, I just think, right, you know it, obviously
- 8:11Speaker 2: you're getting past the first round, and you know that
- 8:13Speaker 2: was such a high for Wild fans, and then just
- 8:16Speaker 2: the way it went down with Colorado, and I get it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: It's Colorado, man. I mean, there's in a sense, there's
- 8:21Speaker 2: no shame to lose into the Avalanche. But you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: state of hockey, you know the whole thing. Man, It's
- 8:28Speaker 2: just like the state of Hockey hasn't done shit in
- 8:32Speaker 2: a minute.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:33Speaker 7: Well you know what, it's funny you bring that up,
- 8:37Speaker 7: but I'm glad you did. Then term state of hockey.
- 8:41Speaker 7: So you know, I'm not the guy who's gonna blow
- 8:44Speaker 7: the sunshine and walk right, but I will give you
- 8:51Speaker 7: the umbrella so that you can block out the sun
- 8:54Speaker 7: or you can protect yourself from the rain.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:56Speaker 5: All right, here's the deal on the state of hockey.
- 9:00Speaker 7: It's a self moniker. We all embrace it because well
- 9:04Speaker 7: we're here. But the truth of the matter is, my friend,
- 9:08Speaker 7: we're the state of youth hockey.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Oh, Tom Hollow, thank you, thank you, And I'm going
- 9:15Speaker 2: to jump on this after you're done, but keep going,
- 9:17Speaker 2: my friend, finishing.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 7: So when you look at Massachusetts and Michigan and Colorado,
- 9:24Speaker 7: we're actually when you talk about college titles and pro titles,
- 9:29Speaker 7: we're smoked, of course by by Colorado, Michigan, Massachusetts, we're
- 9:34Speaker 7: totally smoked. But they can't compete with us in terms
- 9:39Speaker 7: of youth hockey. You know, associations in Minnesota and high
- 9:44Speaker 7: school hockey here second to none. The tournament's the best,
- 9:48Speaker 7: probably in the world at the youth level, and we
- 9:52Speaker 7: turn out more pros than anybody else by double right consistently.
- 9:59Speaker 7: So we're the state of youth hockey. But in reality
- 10:04Speaker 7: we're about fourth place, right.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And that's real cool that you mentioned youth hockey because
- 10:11Speaker 2: a lot of people talk to me and the sports
- 10:13Speaker 2: governor Vince right here on the Sports Done Right podcast
- 10:16Speaker 2: about being a little bit of a Minnesota hockey troll,
- 10:19Speaker 2: because you know, I am a black Hawks fan. Originally
- 10:22Speaker 2: I am, you know, I'm from Chicago. I was a
- 10:24Speaker 2: huge North Stars fan, but then they left, so yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 2: I went to my second favorite team. Been with them
- 10:31Speaker 2: ever since. You know, as long as the Hawks ain't
- 10:35Speaker 2: doing nothing, I'm down. I pulled for the while pull
- 10:37Speaker 2: for their fans. But a story when I was a kid,
- 10:41Speaker 2: because you speak of Massachusetts, my aunt used to work
- 10:45Speaker 2: at UMass at Amherst. He actually became an associate dean
- 10:49Speaker 2: there ultimately. But I would go out there, you know
- 10:52Speaker 2: for a few summers, and all my friends out there
- 10:55Speaker 2: that I made, you know, during the summer waking up
- 10:58Speaker 2: at five am for what hockey practice? Sure in massa
- 11:04Speaker 2: right in Massachusett. So then I come back home and
- 11:06Speaker 2: I'm talking to my Minnesota friends, and you know, hey,
- 11:09Speaker 2: if you don't play hockey in Minnesota, it just it
- 11:11Speaker 2: doesn't count, and this and that, and I'm like, but
- 11:13Speaker 2: they're doing the same thing you're doing, and blah blah blah.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And then obviously we get into Hockey East and you know,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I mean, they got a lot of titles from that
- 11:22Speaker 2: region of the country as well. But sure, I'm glad
- 11:25Speaker 2: you brought up that distinction for youth hockey and Minnesota
- 11:28Speaker 2: because you have Minnesota. Nothing tops it.
- 11:31Speaker 7: So right, I mean, you know the golfers, it's been
- 11:35Speaker 7: twenty Gopher men's hockey, yes, yeah, twenty three years. And
- 11:43Speaker 7: pro hockey here, well, yeah, you know, a couple.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Of nice runs eighty one and ninety.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It was ninety one.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Pittsburgh, yeah, Pittsburgh Islanders was eighty one. We got smoked
- 11:57Speaker 5: and oh yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah, surprise we even got that one victory in that series.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Yeah right.
- 12:03Speaker 7: You know, the Stars then were good, but they were
- 12:05Speaker 7: kind of the Vikings in the seventies, really good team,
- 12:09Speaker 7: but you end up playing a Juggernaut Dolphins the Steel Curtain.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Right, right, And that's you know, obviously for folks, don't
- 12:19Speaker 2: that don't know the New York Islanders as well. You
- 12:21Speaker 2: may not think much of them now. Back then they
- 12:23Speaker 2: rattled off for straight Stanley Cups, they did, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 2: so you know, and then the Stars were in that run.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But yeah, you know, hey, at least they got there.
- 12:34Speaker 7: Yeah, for what it's worth, isn't that the Minnesota thing
- 12:38Speaker 7: to say exactly we got there?
- 12:43Speaker 2: But so you know, let's just kind of keep it
- 12:48Speaker 2: going here with Gopher hockey before we get back in
- 12:51Speaker 2: with the wild Yeah, because well, Gopher hockey, college sports
- 12:57Speaker 2: in general, obviously in il Is everything is just in
- 13:00Speaker 2: such a different place with players that can just pop
- 13:04Speaker 2: in here over here? Are they going over to juniors?
- 13:07Speaker 3: This?
- 13:07Speaker 2: And what's going on? Talk to us a little bit
- 13:11Speaker 2: about college hockey and the Gophers in particular. I mean
- 13:14Speaker 2: they're in the state with what five other Division one
- 13:17Speaker 2: teams or something like that, the Saint the olden days
- 13:20Speaker 2: where it was just them and und so along with
- 13:23Speaker 2: all these other teams. You know, it's just a different times.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You got to pay everybody, right, you.
- 13:30Speaker 7: Know, It's it's such a change. It's the landscape is
- 13:34Speaker 7: it's changing by the month, to be honest. Sure, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 7: how do I say this. I'm all for nostalgia. I'm
- 13:48Speaker 7: all for the old school. But it's twenty twenty six
- 13:52Speaker 7: and things are moving so fast. But I still have
- 13:55Speaker 7: a lot of friends, God bless them that still pine
- 13:59Speaker 7: for the W'SA and they hate the Big ten. And
- 14:04Speaker 7: I get it, of course, you know, so do I.
- 14:06Speaker 7: But it's like, guys, how many years ago is this now? Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 7: let's turn the page, let's let's let it go. And
- 14:17Speaker 7: you have to adjust to that mindset of we got
- 14:21Speaker 7: to get the best kids in Minnesota for the Gophers.
- 14:25Speaker 7: That world is gone and it's been gone for years
- 14:28Speaker 7: and years and Bob Motsco good guy, good coach, championship pedigree.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Not quite there. So you have to expand your borders
- 14:43Speaker 5: in recruiting.
- 14:45Speaker 7: Selling, because that's what it is now with the nil
- 14:49Speaker 7: to international borders. Canadians and last, you know, officially two
- 14:56Speaker 7: years ago now they opened up Canadians and because of
- 15:02Speaker 7: its regional rules, the WHL, which is the Western Hockey
- 15:08Speaker 7: League under the umbrella of the CCHL, and there's three
- 15:14Speaker 7: leagues of that CHL OHL Ontario Hockey League, and then
- 15:20Speaker 7: the q which is the QNJHL Quebec.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Major Junior Hockey League, Oh boy.
- 15:26Speaker 7: And each of those three leagues is basically twenty teams
- 15:30Speaker 7: for sixty teams total. They've been around for decades and decades.
- 15:36Speaker 7: They're a step above the USHL, which is what we
- 15:40Speaker 7: know locally North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, predominantly Wisconsin, and Michigan.
- 15:47Speaker 7: And so you're pulling from all those places now. And
- 15:52Speaker 7: the Canadian kids can go play in the DUB and
- 15:55Speaker 7: still go to the NCAA, and they used to not
- 15:58Speaker 7: be able to do that. So and now you're pulling
- 16:01Speaker 7: in a lot more Europeans now. And there's a certain
- 16:05Speaker 7: style of play in Sweden, Finland. And I'm telling you, brother,
- 16:11Speaker 7: right now, if you want a worker, if you want
- 16:14Speaker 7: a third line, fourth line worker bee who just plays
- 16:17Speaker 7: his role and guts it out and leaves it on
- 16:19Speaker 7: the ice Chechia, you're pulling those kids left and right
- 16:25Speaker 7: because all they do is work, work, work, interesting, They
- 16:31Speaker 7: grind away. So it's it's a big world out there.
- 16:35Speaker 7: The competition's even more than its intense and it's ever been.
- 16:40Speaker 7: And you really start to study all the multi tiered
- 16:44Speaker 7: levels from youth to juniors to major junior to the
- 16:49Speaker 7: Ahl to the NHL. So it's a competitive landscape. Denver
- 16:55Speaker 7: does it very well. Michigan, as you can guess, yeah, EBU,
- 17:01Speaker 7: Michigan State. They got the big money, they got the
- 17:05Speaker 7: big athletic departments with the big finances.
- 17:11Speaker 5: The Gophers are well the lower middle of the pack
- 17:16Speaker 5: in that regard.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And that's right, and that's very interesting because again state
- 17:20Speaker 2: of hockey. You know, hockey so important here. But you know,
- 17:23Speaker 2: last year it was really the first season I noticed
- 17:28Speaker 2: in a while where there was just really not a
- 17:32Speaker 2: I don't want to say not a lot of interest
- 17:34Speaker 2: in Gopher hockey, but it was just on the back
- 17:37Speaker 2: burners for a lot of people. I mean, you know,
- 17:39Speaker 2: whether you're you're turning on the sports you know cast.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I mean, no, you know, nobody was just really vibing
- 17:46Speaker 2: with the hockey. And now I get it, the Gophers
- 17:50Speaker 2: didn't give us a reason to really vibe last season,
- 17:53Speaker 2: But I just thought it was very interesting because Gopher hockey,
- 17:56Speaker 2: obviously in our area, is so important and last year
- 18:00Speaker 2: it was just kind of an afterthought.
- 18:03Speaker 7: So you know, it's it's part of that Minnesota malaise, right,
- 18:09Speaker 7: It's like we haven't had the title run we sniff
- 18:13Speaker 7: a conference title here and there, and I'm talking college
- 18:17Speaker 7: or Prora. Really, the women do it right right there's there.
- 18:23Speaker 7: It's like whether it's the Links or the Gopher women's
- 18:27Speaker 7: team hockey team, the pro women at the p w
- 18:31Speaker 7: h L, the Frost, the Dallas get it done. You know,
- 18:37Speaker 7: they hire the right gms, they draft well, they get
- 18:40Speaker 7: it done. Dude, they succeed. Why is it so hard
- 18:43Speaker 7: on the men's side.
- 18:45Speaker 2: I don't know, that's the question.
- 18:50Speaker 5: I mean that Hartman cursed us before he passed.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I think, all right again, we got Tom Holler joining
- 18:58Speaker 2: us here on the sports done right, folks, we are
- 19:01Speaker 2: talking hockey. I mean, why not ninety degrees outside humidity
- 19:06Speaker 2: middle of July. What's better to do than hit up
- 19:09Speaker 2: a thh and talk a little puck. So let me
- 19:14Speaker 2: ask you this before we get into the pro side
- 19:16Speaker 2: here and talk about the Wild in their offseason and whatnot.
- 19:21Speaker 2: For the Minnesota Gophers, what jeez, what does success look
- 19:28Speaker 2: like next season? Because honestly, I don't know. You know,
- 19:33Speaker 2: I haven't really done a deep dive on the team.
- 19:35Speaker 2: You know who's on there. Obviously, we got a new
- 19:38Speaker 2: coach in play, so there's all kinds of things. But
- 19:41Speaker 2: you know, there is a lot of pressure with this job, Tommy,
- 19:44Speaker 2: So what does success look like for this team next year?
- 19:49Speaker 7: In your opinion, Well, you've got to put last year
- 19:55Speaker 7: behind you. You've got to move on to the new coach.
- 19:59Speaker 7: Brett Larson Saint Cloud State, good guy. And what I'm
- 20:05Speaker 7: hearing on the street and at the rinks, which means
- 20:09Speaker 7: bray Mar for me, there's a camaraderie already building.
- 20:16Speaker 5: With our young Gophers.
- 20:20Speaker 7: And there's kids that have played for Larson that are
- 20:22Speaker 7: with the Gophers now that are showing these guys.
- 20:26Speaker 5: So you know, last year they lost four NHL players
- 20:32Speaker 5: the league.
- 20:36Speaker 7: Right snugger Rude it was good to go, but he
- 20:39Speaker 7: would have been a senior, but he was ready to go.
- 20:42Speaker 7: He had a slight injury with his hand, you know,
- 20:45Speaker 7: mid season, but he had a good year.
- 20:47Speaker 5: He did very well.
- 20:49Speaker 7: And uh, your guy with the Blackhawks ended up having
- 20:53Speaker 7: played what half the year and half the year the
- 20:56Speaker 7: center Oliver Moore, right, But there was the defenseman.
- 21:02Speaker 5: That went to the Blackhawks, right, and.
- 21:07Speaker 7: And the Matthew Wood who went to Nashville. I didn't
- 21:11Speaker 7: think they were ready to go. I thought they could
- 21:14Speaker 7: have used one more year. Now you bring those guys back, right,
- 21:20Speaker 7: your season's a little different and your lines are a
- 21:23Speaker 7: little different, even Oliver Moore, I mean last year, I
- 21:30Speaker 7: hope it was an aberration. You lost a lot of
- 21:32Speaker 7: talent and a third of your team were freshmen. You
- 21:36Speaker 7: had eight freshmen.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Tom, let me stop you right there is I think
- 21:39Speaker 2: you just hit on something and this was actually going
- 21:42Speaker 2: to be my next question.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Did the Gophers do as good as they could have
- 21:46Speaker 4: done last year? But we just expect so.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Much more because I mean, listen to what you just said. Now,
- 21:53Speaker 2: you know, I'm glad you brought it up, because by
- 21:54Speaker 2: the way, I totally spaced that. You know, four NHL
- 21:58Speaker 2: quality players is saying something when they just up and
- 22:02Speaker 2: leave your team as well, So was last year's team
- 22:05Speaker 2: maybe as did they do as good as you know
- 22:09Speaker 2: they could have done or maybe should.
- 22:11Speaker 7: Have done, or with those off they were competitive when
- 22:20Speaker 7: they wanted to be and that ultimate sign of a
- 22:25Speaker 7: bit of a rudderless ship internally with the players. You've
- 22:30Speaker 7: got the coach, you've got the system, you've got decent
- 22:34Speaker 7: assistant coaches for sure, but you're young. You don't have
- 22:39Speaker 7: a premiere shutdown goalie like the Michigan's Michigan States do
- 22:44Speaker 7: Denver and you're you're just you know, eight freshmen and
- 22:50Speaker 7: they all played heavy minutes because of those four departures,
- 22:54Speaker 7: and it was a little bit rough. But the Gophers.
- 22:57Speaker 7: There's no reason for the Gophers not to be even
- 23:01Speaker 7: if they're, you know, a four seed and they're fifteen
- 23:07Speaker 7: sixteenth ranked. You gotta be making the tournament in a
- 23:11Speaker 7: down year. Yes, Okay, that's the benchmark. Okay, you didn't
- 23:16Speaker 7: win the Big Ten. You've won it twice as much
- 23:19Speaker 7: as anyone else has. If I'm not mistaken, fine, but
- 23:24Speaker 7: you gotta make the tournament and you got to at
- 23:27Speaker 7: least be there. That's the benchmark. In a year, even
- 23:30Speaker 7: in a year of turnover departures youth, you got to
- 23:35Speaker 7: make the tournament.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Barnol's no excuse. Okay.
- 23:40Speaker 7: So they've got a lot of good players coming in.
- 23:44Speaker 7: They've got really good transfers. They've got an All American
- 23:48Speaker 7: defenseman for Mankato State kid out of Stillwater defenseman Evan
- 23:52Speaker 7: murr Is coming in.
- 23:54Speaker 5: They've got Austin Bernevik.
- 23:56Speaker 7: He's a score from Saint Claude State six four to ten,
- 24:00Speaker 7: he's an old Tatino Grace kid.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Out of blame.
- 24:04Speaker 7: They picked up one of the best defensemen out of
- 24:06Speaker 7: the w h L from Everett who finished second in
- 24:11Speaker 7: the HL, Terrence Smith.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Six.
- 24:16Speaker 7: They've got some good talent coming in. I was just
- 24:20Speaker 7: gonna say, yeah, so, uh, goalie a little bit of
- 24:25Speaker 7: a question mark. We'll see how that goes. But I'm
- 24:31Speaker 7: excited for the year ahead. I think they're gonna be good.
- 24:34Speaker 7: I think they'll be top five to six in the country.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Oh. Ok, and Wyatt Cullen who went in the first round,
- 24:42Speaker 5: him and him and Brooks Cullen are coming in and
- 24:46Speaker 5: I think are gonna do really really well.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Nice all right, So let's turn in here to the wild.
- 24:53Speaker 2: You we start off with the wild. Let's get back
- 24:56Speaker 2: to them here. So Tom, let me ask you, what
- 24:58Speaker 2: is your biggest take from this draft. It was kind
- 25:03Speaker 2: of a unique draft. You know, while got started a
- 25:06Speaker 2: little late, but you know, give a short review on
- 25:10Speaker 2: the picks that they made and how you anticipate them
- 25:13Speaker 2: fitting in next year.
- 25:15Speaker 7: So they traded the first and second round picks away,
- 25:20Speaker 7: so they only had five. They had five picks, but
- 25:23Speaker 7: none in the first and second round. Then through Osmosis.
- 25:27Speaker 7: They traded up, traded up again. Those five picks became
- 25:32Speaker 7: three picks, so they had a centerman, a right winger,
- 25:37Speaker 7: and a goalie, each one of them positions of need.
- 25:43Speaker 5: A centerman. And all these guys have.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Size, by the way, so that's something new for us
- 25:49Speaker 7: because we usually draft out of the Lollipop Guild.
- 25:53Speaker 5: Right.
- 25:54Speaker 7: So the first was a centerman, Adam Anderson from Sweden
- 26:00Speaker 7: six FO. He's a third fourth line, shutdown centerman, a
- 26:05Speaker 7: decent two way player, but he's a physical presence.
- 26:10Speaker 5: He's a grinder. He's kind of nick.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Uh.
- 26:16Speaker 7: Sorry, Marcus Felino. If Marcus Fellino was a centerman, that's
- 26:21Speaker 7: their first pick. Adam Anderson not a Sweden.
- 26:24Speaker 8: Uh.
- 26:25Speaker 5: He's probably three years away though. Okay, so these are
- 26:30Speaker 5: long term depth players.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Uh.
- 26:33Speaker 5: The second player was a Caden Lemire.
- 26:36Speaker 7: He's a right winger and he was from Prince George
- 26:40Speaker 7: out of the whl uh six four.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Yeah, big dude.
- 26:46Speaker 7: He got a little bit more scoring in him, but
- 26:49Speaker 7: he's not a dynamics scorer by any means. He's another
- 26:53Speaker 7: third fourth line grinder with size. Gotta work on his
- 26:57Speaker 7: foot speed a little bit, but he's a big kick
- 27:00Speaker 7: that likes to get down that front block goalie and
- 27:03Speaker 7: just play that bumper position on the power play, right,
- 27:07Speaker 7: And so he's he's going to be a worker for them.
- 27:12Speaker 7: But again he might be three four years away.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah, you know exactly, but we need that, we need
- 27:20Speaker 2: some depth and looks exactly.
- 27:23Speaker 7: The goalie they took is a kid out of Chechia, right,
- 27:29Speaker 7: and this kid is uh six eight two. I mean
- 27:34Speaker 7: he's a monster, he said right now for his size,
- 27:42Speaker 7: but his laterals and his updowns have a ways to go.
- 27:47Speaker 7: He needs to get a little bit quicker. But he's
- 27:51Speaker 7: a competitor. He does really well internationally in the big
- 27:55Speaker 7: tournaments and uh, you know, goalies, my god, you ever
- 28:00Speaker 7: know how long their incubation period is going to last?
- 28:03Speaker 7: And can they keep it up here straight for the
- 28:07Speaker 7: long haul? But intriguing prospects.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Okay, he's the draft.
- 28:12Speaker 5: I'd give it a C plus B minus.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Okay, sounds good. Let me ask you this talking about
- 28:18Speaker 2: Minnesota while kind of going back to the playoffs there
- 28:21Speaker 2: number ninety seven, the legend himself, Carill, what were your thoughts?
- 28:27Speaker 2: Did he yet disappointing in the playoffs? You know, kind
- 28:33Speaker 2: of hit and miss a little bit there. What were
- 28:36Speaker 2: your thoughts on number ninety seven, because I mean, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 2: you franchise.
- 28:41Speaker 7: So you know Cariill needs help and he needs some
- 28:46Speaker 7: size on his line, and I fear that we're going
- 28:49Speaker 7: to see a lot of the same because he needs that.
- 28:53Speaker 7: You know, at some point, the Wild have to stop
- 28:56Speaker 7: the experimenting of dropping Boldy down second line.
- 29:01Speaker 3: You have to.
- 29:02Speaker 7: And in a perfect world, if the Wild had that
- 29:06Speaker 7: depth right that we talk about, you want to have
- 29:09Speaker 7: Carrill left wing. You want to one seed that we
- 29:14Speaker 7: just don't have yet. Right, but right now it's Carill
- 29:19Speaker 7: at left, it's Eck at center, and you want to
- 29:23Speaker 7: have Boldy on right wing.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Now that's the first line, right, absolutely, but we.
- 29:29Speaker 7: Always drop Boldy down to balance out the second line,
- 29:32Speaker 7: so it makes things tougher for Carill. But that said,
- 29:38Speaker 7: until midway through that Avalanche series, Carrill was top four
- 29:44Speaker 7: in NHL scoring. They weren't goals per se, they weren't
- 29:50Speaker 7: the highlight reels where he's doing the mohawk around the
- 29:53Speaker 7: rink the offensive zone, but he was dishing a lot
- 29:58Speaker 7: of assists. He was playing a good two way game,
- 30:02Speaker 7: and it was a little bit misleading that he wasn't contributing.
- 30:08Speaker 7: That said you expected more goals, game winning goals, and
- 30:13Speaker 7: that Colorado series those last two three games rough.
- 30:17Speaker 5: Goal, Yeah, of course, yeah, but you're not wrong. It
- 30:21Speaker 5: was a rough goal. But it's a rough goal for everybody.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Exactly. Let me ask you this, go ahead finish tom he.
- 30:29Speaker 5: Had no ec right, he really missed him a lot.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Let me ask you this, what would Tom
- 30:36Speaker 2: Hollerd do? What was you know, if if there's one
- 30:39Speaker 2: more move to be made out there by the Minnesota
- 30:41Speaker 2: while Tommy, what would you do? What are you what
- 30:45Speaker 2: are you looking to do right now? Yeah?
- 30:50Speaker 7: Can I get some more cap space back? So they're
- 30:55Speaker 7: down to one point one million in cap? I mean wow,
- 30:58Speaker 7: barring a major train and relinquishing assets to clear cap
- 31:03Speaker 7: to bring in a Larkin or whomever. Really they're they're
- 31:09Speaker 7: at a cap point where when you're at one million,
- 31:11Speaker 7: one point one you just leave it be and you
- 31:15Speaker 7: just roll with it because you're gonna have to have
- 31:17Speaker 7: that money for a call up, send downs two way,
- 31:20Speaker 7: one way, this that you got to have that money
- 31:23Speaker 7: to play with during the season. That at this point
- 31:27Speaker 7: I would I would let go of the Dylan Larkin sweepstakes.
- 31:32Speaker 7: I don't think Detroit general manager Steve Eiserman's gonna deal
- 31:36Speaker 7: him at all. He has five years left on his contract.
- 31:40Speaker 7: So this entitlement of I'm done. Dude, you're from Michigan,
- 31:46Speaker 7: you're a Michigan will Green, Right, you play for Detroit.
- 31:50Speaker 5: What are you doing here?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Exactly?
- 31:52Speaker 7: So I don't think Iman's going to give him away.
- 31:56Speaker 7: If we were to give away what you know Ierman wants,
- 32:01Speaker 7: he came out and said boldie or forget it. So
- 32:06Speaker 7: it speaks a little bit to some of our up
- 32:08Speaker 7: and comers, and then we hope pan out. Eiserman doesn't
- 32:12Speaker 7: think there's enough there. And if you let you're off
- 32:15Speaker 7: goal and strammle Go and another pick. Yeah, what you're
- 32:20Speaker 7: getting back, you're letting too much out me.
- 32:24Speaker 5: I stay put.
- 32:26Speaker 7: I hit the road with what we got, and we
- 32:29Speaker 7: see where we're at at the trade deadline. See who's healthy,
- 32:32Speaker 7: see who's not. Make a move there. Regroup next year
- 32:36Speaker 7: because you'll have a number one pick in twenty seven
- 32:39Speaker 7: and you're gonna have, from what I'm reading, close to
- 32:42Speaker 7: thirty five million in cap space next July first, twenty
- 32:46Speaker 7: twenty seven.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Right, let me ask you this, and we got a
- 32:50Speaker 2: few more minutes here with Tom Holler Let's Play Hockey
- 32:54Speaker 2: co hosts on YouTube. Let's talk about the goalie the
- 32:58Speaker 2: goalie situation here, because we've kind of gone through this
- 33:01Speaker 2: a lot here in recent memory.
- 33:03Speaker 8: Where the while, you know, they get these hot goalies
- 33:07Speaker 8: out of you know, nowhere whatever, you know, all of
- 33:10Speaker 8: a sudden they all become the walls of Saint Paul,
- 33:13Speaker 8: you know, I mean, we can go back a few
- 33:14Speaker 8: years here and then well, that's what I'm saying, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 8: I mean, and he was the key example because when
- 33:24Speaker 8: he started his run, nobody was getting anything past dudes, right,
- 33:29Speaker 8: and yet what do we have.
- 33:31Speaker 2: To show for that?
- 33:33Speaker 4: You know, one and done well exactly, And that's the
- 33:37Speaker 4: That's where I'm going with this, man.
- 33:39Speaker 2: I mean, we had it this year earlier this season,
- 33:42Speaker 2: both of these guys were impenetrable. Man, Nobody was getting
- 33:46Speaker 2: nothing past either one of these guys. Obviously, the playoffs come,
- 33:51Speaker 2: you gotta gotta kind of roll with one there didn't
- 33:55Speaker 2: kind of work out. You made the switch that didn't
- 33:57Speaker 2: work out to bring in your regular guys. What's going
- 34:01Speaker 2: on with the wild goalie situation? And will both of
- 34:04Speaker 2: these guys be here next year?
- 34:09Speaker 7: Goalies are goalies. It's a finiky The streaky deal whilst
- 34:21Speaker 7: really impressed me throughout the year. When he came up
- 34:24Speaker 7: from Iowa, it's like, well he struggled in Iowa. Well yeah,
- 34:27Speaker 7: because Iowa struggles no structure in front of him and
- 34:32Speaker 7: and no scoring. So you know, he's got scoring, he's
- 34:38Speaker 7: got defensive structure. He did really well and you know,
- 34:42Speaker 7: and then he had that one bad game where he
- 34:45Speaker 7: got shelled, and and that happens to every goalie.
- 34:50Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:51Speaker 7: Look at Florida, they just traded Bobrovski multi as a
- 34:57Speaker 7: trophy winner to Toronto, so it it.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Comes to them all.
- 35:02Speaker 7: But now Gustafson is hurt and is having hip surgery,
- 35:07Speaker 7: which is not good. That's not a good sign. He's
- 35:11Speaker 7: out till mid November. So the Wild signed a second
- 35:14Speaker 7: goalie to backup Waalstat, Calvin Picard. He's a depth fill.
- 35:21Speaker 7: When Gus gets back healthy, Picard goes to Iowa. Poor guy,
- 35:25Speaker 7: and uh, you're gonna roll with the Walstet as your
- 35:29Speaker 7: number one, even though their salaries are reversed.
- 35:33Speaker 5: Walstet's the guy. He really truly is, I believe.
- 35:37Speaker 7: But you know a friend of mine who's a goalie
- 35:41Speaker 7: instructor and specializes in off ice training, he's got an
- 35:46Speaker 7: approach of you just never know what these guys until
- 35:51Speaker 7: you prove it in the playoffs year upon year, like
- 35:57Speaker 7: an underrated goalie like a Jordan Binnnington in but the
- 36:00Speaker 7: guy's money in international events and he was money for
- 36:04Speaker 7: the Blues how many times. That's when you prove it.
- 36:09Speaker 7: So we're not there yet. You're right, but I think
- 36:15Speaker 7: both both Gusta Sin and Walls that are with the
- 36:17Speaker 7: Wild this year. Gustavson's got a you know, I think
- 36:21Speaker 7: four more years on his contract at six point six
- 36:26Speaker 7: point sev.
- 36:30Speaker 5: Yep.
- 36:30Speaker 7: And Wallstatt is a next July first will be a
- 36:34Speaker 7: restricted free agent. So it'll be interesting. I my crystal
- 36:39Speaker 7: ball says, at some point next year, trade deadline or
- 36:42Speaker 7: next summer, I think we're gonna trade Gusta Sin to
- 36:46Speaker 7: like Edmonton. Okay, like that, Maybe that's really a goalie
- 36:52Speaker 7: away perhaps.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Uh okay, interesting? Interesting? All right, Well let me Tom,
- 36:59Speaker 2: let me kind of wrap it up here, because you know,
- 37:04Speaker 2: we talked state of hockey, Minnesota hockey, and that's what
- 37:07Speaker 2: this show was about. But one thing that I wanted
- 37:09Speaker 2: to pick your mind about was just kind of the
- 37:12Speaker 2: growth of the league. I mean, you know how many
- 37:16Speaker 2: Stanley Cups has the state of Florida one recently?
- 37:20Speaker 5: A four.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Four in North Carolina eight years.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Yeah, here's what's ironic. I know where you're headed.
- 37:32Speaker 6: It's got two. Florida's got two, three and Vegas you know,
- 37:39Speaker 6: I mean three total. Yep, Vegas has been there a.
- 37:43Speaker 7: Couple of times, has been on the door twice more.
- 37:48Speaker 7: Dallas has two cups?
- 37:50Speaker 5: Do they not? Well?
- 37:54Speaker 7: Arizona but all those Sundell team, the Kings, you know,
- 38:00Speaker 7: it's been a couple of years, but they got one.
- 38:02Speaker 7: Anaheim's got one. That's twenty something, twenty two to twenty
- 38:06Speaker 7: three years ago.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Hey, they got it.
- 38:08Speaker 5: Though, Can the state of youth hockey get a cup?
- 38:12Speaker 3: Is it?
- 38:12Speaker 5: Okay?
- 38:14Speaker 2: Thank you?
- 38:15Speaker 5: Man? Isn't that hard to make us look cool?
- 38:18Speaker 1: Oh?
- 38:19Speaker 4: Man?
- 38:19Speaker 2: I I just remember, well ninety one going to the Bars,
- 38:25Speaker 2: the old foul play was in school. They were in
- 38:28Speaker 2: college during that foul. Yes, sir, you know what I'm
- 38:31Speaker 2: talking about. But also because Norm Green put that stuff
- 38:35Speaker 2: on pay per view, that's a whole different discussion. Though,
- 38:39Speaker 2: but just you know, I mean even the brothers were like, man,
- 38:44Speaker 2: I got to check out this game tonight, man, you know,
- 38:48Speaker 2: and it just it does suck because in a state
- 38:51Speaker 2: that is just so dominated by hockey from all levels,
- 38:55Speaker 2: to just not even you know, get close to the
- 38:59Speaker 2: tabe recently is just you know, for the pro team,
- 39:03Speaker 2: it is just ridiculous. And I get it, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 2: p w HL with the frost and all this stuff.
- 39:09Speaker 2: But I'm talking you know, the main dudes here, and
- 39:14Speaker 2: I don't know, man, because I don't know what changes
- 39:19Speaker 2: next year. Necessarily, obviously things got to play out. But
- 39:23Speaker 2: you know, when I'm talking to my friends in Nashville
- 39:27Speaker 2: and Miami and Tampa, you know, and and and you know,
- 39:33Speaker 2: relatives talking about hockey and North Carolina wrong, it's wrong,
- 39:42Speaker 2: you know.
- 39:42Speaker 5: And people there don't care. They don't care.
- 39:46Speaker 2: No, I wouldn't say that necessarily because I mean, it's
- 39:51Speaker 2: it's different obviously than Minnesota because it doesn't have the
- 39:56Speaker 2: youth perspective, like you said.
- 39:58Speaker 7: When you January game at Lenovo Arena or you watch
- 40:10Speaker 7: where the Panthers play in mid January.
- 40:15Speaker 2: No, that's true because everybody's golfing and enjoining the nice
- 40:18Speaker 2: weather that.
- 40:19Speaker 5: We don't get here. You just got to pour salt
- 40:22Speaker 5: in the.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Exactly. Oh man, listen, we call it.
- 40:29Speaker 5: I call it fer soda.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Man.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Listen. You know I love our state, Tommy. You know,
- 40:38Speaker 2: Minnesota has been really good to me and all this.
- 40:42Speaker 2: But I will say, and I you know, I got
- 40:45Speaker 2: my own issues. I'll save the Blackhawks for another show.
- 40:48Speaker 2: That's a whole different.
- 40:49Speaker 5: Beast, that's a half a pod right there, dude, I
- 40:53Speaker 5: whatever that.
- 40:54Speaker 2: So called front office is trying to do down there.
- 40:56Speaker 2: And then then the news with Connor, he's gonna be
- 40:59Speaker 2: out for four months. It's it's just it's you know,
- 41:03Speaker 2: it's a curse franchise. And maybe we had the as fans,
- 41:06Speaker 2: we sold our souls to the devil for those three
- 41:09Speaker 2: cups back in the day. But I just hope Minnesota
- 41:13Speaker 2: can find a way. I really do. These people are
- 41:17Speaker 2: starving for it. The fans up there are craving for this.
- 41:22Speaker 5: This town needs a title Anima so bad.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Well you know yeah that I mean, you know, Timberwolves
- 41:29Speaker 2: and you know just kind of you know, well, recent
- 41:32Speaker 2: trades there, and we'll have you back on to talk
- 41:35Speaker 2: about some hoops here. But man, yeah, something's got to
- 41:39Speaker 2: break here. And you know, I just wanted to talk
- 41:42Speaker 2: to you because we're talking hockey tonight. And like you said, man,
- 41:45Speaker 2: that Gopher title, Yeah, what was that twenty years ago
- 41:48Speaker 2: now or something like that. Obviously since the incarnation of
- 41:54Speaker 2: the Minnesota Wild, you know, nowhere close to a final.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Well the main final once.
- 42:00Speaker 5: One deep, one deep, run three four and.
- 42:05Speaker 2: That's been a minute too. Yeah, that's the whole point
- 42:08Speaker 2: I mean.
- 42:10Speaker 7: Was that you think back to three we had the
- 42:14Speaker 7: Timberwolves and the Wild Conference finals. Didn't we in the
- 42:19Speaker 7: same year, isn't that right?
- 42:21Speaker 2: I think so?
- 42:22Speaker 5: Or it wasn't the same year, it was back to back.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Well, I get what you're saying, though. They were both
- 42:30Speaker 2: really kind of close and on the cuss back then,
- 42:32Speaker 2: and it was palpable here people. Oh well, and that's
- 42:38Speaker 2: what people don't get because that time of year, it's
- 42:42Speaker 2: springtime here, it's getting warm now, and you know, I
- 42:45Speaker 2: mean people were outside and you know, like well just
- 42:48Speaker 2: kind of recently, like with the watch parties right for
- 42:50Speaker 2: the UH for the World Cup, you know, outside and
- 42:54Speaker 2: join it. And man, I just hope they can find
- 42:58Speaker 2: a way, Tom Holler, because you know, it has just
- 43:01Speaker 2: been so long for the hockey fan in this state.
- 43:04Speaker 7: The wild better get to it because San Jose and
- 43:08Speaker 7: Utah and Anaheim are doing this.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Yeah, they're doing it quickly.
- 43:15Speaker 2: And it's funny you mentioned Utah new franchise for the
- 43:19Speaker 2: hockey folks that don't or maybe not hockey fans. Yes,
- 43:23Speaker 2: Utah to go over the Arizona franchise. And it was
- 43:27Speaker 2: funny because there's I forgot the name of the show.
- 43:29Speaker 2: It was on CNBC and it's talking about kind of
- 43:33Speaker 2: the cities of the future, and they were talking about
- 43:36Speaker 2: Salt Lake and they interviewed that owner and his wife
- 43:39Speaker 2: because he also owns the Utah Jazz.
- 43:41Speaker 5: He gets it done, I would do.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, I, God, forget. I know
- 43:46Speaker 2: there's people out there that know's name right now, but
- 43:49Speaker 2: that owner his wife. What they are doing out there
- 43:53Speaker 2: in terms of rebuilding the Delta Center if it's still
- 43:57Speaker 2: called Delta Center, I don't know whatever they're rebuilding there.
- 44:00Speaker 2: They're young folks. They're only I think in their late
- 44:03Speaker 2: forties by the wall, so it's that yeah, yeah, I
- 44:06Speaker 2: mean they are young folks and they are thinking outside
- 44:08Speaker 2: of the box and they're gonna make it very very
- 44:11Speaker 2: interesting because people are gonna be like, oh, Utah, who
- 44:15Speaker 2: wants to go out to Mormon Land and this and
- 44:17Speaker 2: that time's a change man. And with owners like that,
- 44:21Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be very interesting. So you had another
- 44:23Speaker 2: reason why I gotta kind of step under, sir, stay
- 44:26Speaker 2: on their p's and q's.
- 44:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it ain't still friends.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Show business. All right, ladies and gentlemen, the one and
- 44:36Speaker 2: only Tom Holler. Let's play hockey. We're gonna have Tom
- 44:40Speaker 2: Beck throughout the year and obviously when we do start
- 44:43Speaker 2: hockey season, he's gonna be one of our main contacts here.
- 44:46Speaker 2: So Tom, thank you for joining us my friend on
- 44:49Speaker 2: the show. I really appreciate it any thanks for the invite.
- 44:52Speaker 5: It was a blast man.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Thank you all right, all right, folks, my man man
- 44:58Speaker 2: Tom Holler joining us on the Sports Done Right podcasts,
- 45:01Speaker 2: and like I said, he's gonna be one of our
- 45:03Speaker 2: main hockey contacts. So Tom, thank you again for joining us.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Always good to catch up with an old friend as well.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Like I said, Tom, we go back to college days.
- 45:15Speaker 2: He went to Annona State with my ex wife and
- 45:18Speaker 2: a bunch of friends and people that I knew down there,
- 45:21Speaker 2: so yeah, known Tom forever and glad that we reconnected here.
- 45:27Speaker 2: So with that being said, people, I thank you again.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Make sure you get you some Seventh Avenue pizza. And
- 45:34Speaker 2: I'm telling you, if you ever thought a pizza and
- 45:37Speaker 2: breakfast didn't go together, you got to get that breakfast
- 45:39Speaker 2: pizza man. Otherwise that sausage pepperoni my personal favorite love
- 45:44Speaker 2: Seventh Avenue pizza. Make sure you get you some, as
- 45:48Speaker 2: I like to say, and with that we are out
- 45:50Speaker 2: of here. We'll be back next week with another Sports
- 45:53Speaker 2: done Right podcast. Peace.
