- 0:30Speaker 1: All right, Gator fans, I am so excited for this one.
- 0:34Speaker 1: My college friend, Phil Troutwine, joins us to discuss his homecoming. Phil,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I think for our generation, which honestly just made me
- 0:44Speaker 1: feel really old in this moment, you being back is
- 0:48Speaker 1: a link to our best years. And you said right
- 0:53Speaker 1: when you were hired that you came back to win championships.
- 0:57Speaker 1: In your opinion, what has to change inside the building
- 1:01Speaker 1: before that statement is a possibility and not just, you know, motivational?
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to really come down to the culture.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You know, being in that culture and what this program
- 1:14Speaker 3: is about and what we need to do is get
- 1:16Speaker 3: the right guys or the guys to buy into that culture,
- 1:20Speaker 3: which I think, you know, that's what Coach Summerall is
- 1:23Speaker 3: here to do and he's doing a great job so
- 1:25Speaker 3: far and You know, I really feel like we got
- 1:27Speaker 3: the guys in the room, you know, in that team
- 1:30Speaker 3: room to be able to do that because the kids here,
- 1:33Speaker 3: they do want to be great.
- 1:35Speaker 2: We just have to show them the way.
- 1:37Speaker 3: And that's what, you know, great programs are able to
- 1:40Speaker 3: do is get the kids to buy in and have them,
- 1:44Speaker 3: you know, be part of the culture and understand the
- 1:47Speaker 3: culture and then leadership because talent will only get you
- 1:50Speaker 3: so many wins.
- 1:50Speaker 2: And then it's the leadership.
- 1:52Speaker 3: And, you know, coaches can do so much, but it
- 1:54Speaker 3: really has to be player driven, not coach driven. And
- 1:58Speaker 3: when we get that, you know, that's going to be,
- 2:01Speaker 3: you know, the key. And that's what, you know, Coach
- 2:03Speaker 3: Meyer was able to do. And I was able to
- 2:05Speaker 3: see it as a player. And, you know, I always
- 2:08Speaker 3: want to make sure that as a coach, I want
- 2:10Speaker 3: to be somewhere where I would think I would want
- 2:12Speaker 3: to play. And, you know, being back in Florida, of course, but,
- 2:16Speaker 3: you know, with the program and the way it's run
- 2:19Speaker 3: with the leadership is is.
- 2:21Speaker 2: You know, I would play here right now.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And that's always key to the success of a program.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You mentioned that you were here during that transition from
- 2:32Speaker 1: Zook to Meyer. And, you know, I remember so vividly
- 2:35Speaker 1: when that happened. And I think it's one of those
- 2:38Speaker 1: things where you didn't know what you didn't know. And
- 2:40Speaker 1: then this whole new staff came in. And what would
- 2:43Speaker 1: you say was the thing that just changed immediately in
- 2:47Speaker 1: that building that told you, man, this is different?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Oh man, just the details and the demand and, you know, the, the,
- 2:58Speaker 3: just the coaching staff of trying to get you to
- 3:01Speaker 3: be elite and to get you to be detailed oriented
- 3:04Speaker 3: and relentless effort. Having that, you know, the things that
- 3:08Speaker 3: take no talent and being able to get the talented
- 3:11Speaker 3: guys to buy in. And from day one, you know,
- 3:15Speaker 3: not letting us wear Gator stuff and Matt drills and
- 3:19Speaker 3: toughness and, you know, that was what he came to
- 3:22Speaker 3: do and he was able to do it. And we
- 3:24Speaker 3: had great talent in, you know, in that team room
- 3:28Speaker 3: and he got them to work and buy in. And that's,
- 3:31Speaker 3: that's what he's able to do. And that's why we
- 3:33Speaker 3: were able.
- 3:33Speaker 2: To win a lot of games.
- 3:36Speaker 1: As a player back then, how long do you think
- 3:38Speaker 1: it took before you felt like the program had flipped?
- 3:44Speaker 2: Oh man.
- 3:46Speaker 3: You know, it was probably, you know, really, I mean,
- 3:48Speaker 3: I would say we, we knew what we were getting
- 3:51Speaker 3: into and then it probably took, you know, a good
- 3:53Speaker 3: year for us to really understand, you know, the offense
- 3:57Speaker 3: and really understand how to truly work. And what we
- 4:01Speaker 3: need to see is we have to see improvement, right?
- 4:04Speaker 3: That's what, you know, guys need to see. And as
- 4:07Speaker 3: improvement happens, then now the guys buy in even more.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And as they see them getting better and they see
- 4:14Speaker 3: us winning games and they see, us having a good
- 4:17Speaker 3: spring practice and spring game and all that stuff as
- 4:21Speaker 3: it evolves that way. And it took a good, in
- 4:23Speaker 3: my mind, took a good six months to a year
- 4:25Speaker 3: for us to really understand. We probably bought in, but
- 4:29Speaker 3: we probably truly didn't buy in until we saw some
- 4:32Speaker 3: of the results of us just buying in. So truly
- 4:36Speaker 3: buying in is what takes some time.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You mentioned the removing of the Gator logo, which that's
- 4:43Speaker 1: one of the things that stood out to me back
- 4:44Speaker 1: from Myers days, that Gator head and you know, under
- 4:47Speaker 1: the stadium being removed, y'all not being able to wear
- 4:49Speaker 1: the logo. Did Summerall really have no idea that Meyer
- 4:53Speaker 1: had also done that? Or is that like, he just
- 4:56Speaker 1: borrowed that from him because it worked.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I, I guess not. Like I haven't really asked
- 5:01Speaker 3: him to be honest with you. I just, all right.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Like I, that what's, that's what we did. And we
- 5:06Speaker 3: kind of, bought into that and we earned it back,
- 5:10Speaker 3: which I think is a great, just understanding of what
- 5:13Speaker 3: this place is about. You know, how much that logo
- 5:16Speaker 3: really means a lot to a lot of people and
- 5:19Speaker 3: it should mean everything to you and to wear it,
- 5:22Speaker 3: you have that pride. And to have that pride is
- 5:25Speaker 3: what really should drive you. And that's, you know, that's
- 5:29Speaker 3: who he is and that's what he wants. He wants driven,
- 5:33Speaker 3: you know, guys that just love football and want to
- 5:35Speaker 3: be great. And it's kind of the same DNA that
- 5:40Speaker 3: Meyer wanted. He wanted guys to come in and being
- 5:44Speaker 3: able to understand that and being able to be the
- 5:47Speaker 3: guy that leadership and that DNA is tough.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You are so uniquely qualified to talk about the comparisons
- 5:58Speaker 1: between Summerall and Meyer. And obviously, wins are what's going
- 6:02Speaker 1: to be the ultimate decider. So, you know, in three years,
- 6:05Speaker 1: we may be saying they're exactly the same, or we
- 6:07Speaker 1: may be saying they weren't that similar at all. But
- 6:10Speaker 1: what similarities right now do you see? And do you
- 6:13Speaker 1: see any differences?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Um, you know, similarities, I mean, he's detailed. I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 3: he sent a staff, you know, a picture cause the
- 6:22Speaker 3: weights weren't exactly the way they should be. The Gator
- 6:25Speaker 3: head needs to be on the bottom, like stuff like that.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And I can see Meyer doing that. And it's just
- 6:30Speaker 3: the little details that sometimes fall through the cracks that
- 6:33Speaker 3: that's what the details that you lose games, um, same details.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And so you can see he's detail oriented. Um, he's,
- 6:42Speaker 3: he's no bull crap. Like he's, you know, all about
- 6:44Speaker 3: toughness and, and demands a lot from the coaching staff
- 6:48Speaker 3: and also from the players, which that's what coach Meyer
- 6:51Speaker 3: was all about. Um, and then, you know, he, he
- 6:54Speaker 3: loves his players. He goes down there and works with
- 6:56Speaker 3: them and he's actually works out with us or with them. Um,
- 7:00Speaker 3: and so he grinds with them. And, and I think
- 7:02Speaker 3: the players take a liking to that because he's a
- 7:05Speaker 3: coach that's willing to get dirty and willing to do
- 7:07Speaker 3: the things.
- 7:08Speaker 2: That you know other.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Coaches won't do which is different um in my mind
- 7:12Speaker 3: um than a lot of coaches that have been around
- 7:14Speaker 3: and so it's not just because he likes to work
- 7:16Speaker 3: out he just likes being in that environment like he
- 7:18Speaker 3: likes to be down there and really grind and he's
- 7:21Speaker 3: just a gritty went you know play to Kentucky and
- 7:24Speaker 3: he understands SEC football um which is different than you
- 7:28Speaker 3: know a lot of other coaches out there the coaches
- 7:30Speaker 3: I've been um able to work with so that's what
- 7:34Speaker 3: kind of sets them apart. And I think the kids
- 7:36Speaker 3: really liked that because a lot of coaches out there
- 7:38Speaker 3: will say the man, the man, the man, and then
- 7:40Speaker 3: they just go and they don't see them for the
- 7:42Speaker 3: rest of the day, but he's right there, like doing
- 7:45Speaker 3: bench with the wide receivers and he's, you know, benching
- 7:48Speaker 3: and sitting there deadlifting, um, showing them, Hey, you know, I'm,
- 7:51Speaker 3: I'm willing to work too.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And, you know, that's just who I am.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Are you down in the weight room at all? And
- 7:58Speaker 1: if so, what are you seeing from these players?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I'm down there a lot.
- 8:03Speaker 3: You know, we, we lift every morning or every Tuesday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
- 8:08Speaker 3: Friday at seven 30 offense does. And, you know, you're
- 8:12Speaker 3: just seeing guys, you know, really buy into coach wit.
- 8:16Speaker 3: You know, he's an awesome, awesome dude, but he's also
- 8:19Speaker 3: an awesome man. And you know, he's a good strength
- 8:23Speaker 3: coach and he knows exactly what he's talking about, but
- 8:25Speaker 3: he's also teaching them life lessons during the strength conditionings
- 8:29Speaker 3: aspect as well, which is cool, really cool to see.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And he's trying to drive them and trying to push
- 8:34Speaker 3: them and try to get them ready, um, for spring ball. And, um,
- 8:38Speaker 3: you know, he, the, the energy in the weight room
- 8:41Speaker 3: is different than day one. Um, till now the guys
- 8:44Speaker 3: are getting a lot stronger, um, which is great to see. And, uh,
- 8:48Speaker 3: you know, he's, he's doing his job and he's doing great.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And guys are really buying into that because your strength
- 8:53Speaker 3: coach is everything like, You know, our strength coach, Mickey
- 8:57Speaker 3: Mirati was, you know, he was, he's now at Ohio
- 8:59Speaker 3: state and he was, you know, the main driver of
- 9:03Speaker 3: that culture.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Same thing here.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Coach Witt is the main driver of that culture. So
- 9:07Speaker 3: if your strength coach isn't right and your strength coach
- 9:09Speaker 3: isn't echoing what you're saying or doesn't believe in what you,
- 9:14Speaker 3: your four core values and all that stuff, then it's
- 9:16Speaker 3: going to be hard for you to really have them
- 9:18Speaker 3: buy into to you. So having him, really be his
- 9:23Speaker 3: guy who he was with him at Tulane and also at.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Troy.
- 9:31Speaker 3: So, you know, that's awesome for him to be able
- 9:33Speaker 3: to continue those, you know, that culture and continue to
- 9:38Speaker 3: tell them and help them buy in.
- 9:41Speaker 1: So I remember all the things that Mickey Marotti brought
- 9:45Speaker 1: in for you guys, that Midnight Lifts and the St.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Valentine's Day Massacre, Matt Drills. Are you seeing anything that
- 9:52Speaker 1: looks familiar to any of that?
- 9:55Speaker 3: Uh, we do, we do kind of workouts in the morning, um,
- 9:58Speaker 3: but nothing like wrestling and Matt drills and no, they,
- 10:02Speaker 3: I don't think we can get away with that anymore.
- 10:04Speaker 3: So they, it goes from variety guy, lucky. Uh, but
- 10:07Speaker 3: you know, it is, this program is, you know, the
- 10:10Speaker 3: strength conditioning is built on toughness. Um, it's all about
- 10:14Speaker 3: competition and competing. So everything is a matchup. Everything is
- 10:18Speaker 3: detailed and, You know, we have a thing, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 3: we're going on our sixth gauntlet workout tomorrow, which is
- 10:24Speaker 3: basically six stations, kind of like what Matt drills is.
- 10:27Speaker 3: We don't have the wrestling part, but it's really about
- 10:30Speaker 3: like details of having your foot behind the line and
- 10:34Speaker 3: being in a stack line, making sure that how you finish,
- 10:37Speaker 3: you know, everybody has to do the right way, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 3: do it the right way during that rep. If not,
- 10:42Speaker 3: then you after the rep, your your group does three
- 10:46Speaker 3: up downs. And you're trying to finish the whole entire gauntlet.
- 10:50Speaker 3: It's three rounds and you have to try to finish
- 10:51Speaker 3: it in an hour. And when you finish it, it's
- 10:54Speaker 3: like you no longer have to do it. So if
- 10:55Speaker 3: they would have finished it on gauntlet one, it would
- 10:58Speaker 3: have been over. And it's just seeing them communicate and
- 11:02Speaker 3: lead and understand like when you get tired, you still
- 11:05Speaker 3: have to be mentally tough. So it's a really good thing.
- 11:09Speaker 3: And it's really just built off of mental toughness and
- 11:12Speaker 3: discipline and being able to push when you're tired.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Are they getting closer each time?
- 11:18Speaker 2: They are, they are.
- 11:19Speaker 3: They got all the way to the last round, this
- 11:21Speaker 3: last one, which was last Wednesday. So we're hoping tomorrow morning,
- 11:25Speaker 3: you know what I mean? As this coaching staff, they
- 11:27Speaker 3: pass it, but like coach tomorrow, we'll tell you like,
- 11:31Speaker 3: if we don't pass it the March 3rd, we're not
- 11:34Speaker 3: going to practice. So we might not have spring practice.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Number one, if we don't pass the gauntlet. So our,
- 11:39Speaker 3: our main thing is to pass the gauntlet. Cause if
- 11:42Speaker 3: we do, then we know that we're ready for the
- 11:45Speaker 3: fourth quarter and we know our team is ready for
- 11:47Speaker 3: spring ball. But until then, we're going to keep doing
- 11:51Speaker 3: the gauntlet.
- 11:51Speaker 1: If you're already using Sleeper for fantasy and DFS, there's
- 11:57Speaker 1: something new that you need to know about. Sleeper just
- 12:00Speaker 1: rolled out Team Picks, which is a new way to
- 12:03Speaker 1: make game-level predictions instead of having to focus on individual players.
- 12:07Speaker 1: With team picks, you're simply choosing outcomes for full games.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So for example, when the Gators are taking on Ole
- 12:13Speaker 1: Miss in hoops, you'll see the matchup listed and then
- 12:16Speaker 1: the multiplier tied to each game, winning or losing. No lineups,
- 12:20Speaker 1: no player props, just the teams and the outcomes. It's
- 12:23Speaker 1: all laid out clearly in the app so you can
- 12:26Speaker 1: see the matchups, the multipliers, and decide which side you
- 12:29Speaker 1: like or don't like. That's up to you. If you
- 12:33Speaker 1: already have Sleeper, check it out in the app. And
- 12:35Speaker 1: if you don't, Sleeper still has Fantasy, DFS, and now
- 12:40Speaker 1: Team Picks all in one place. From your experience, is
- 12:44Speaker 1: culture more about what coaches demand or is it more
- 12:49Speaker 1: what players are willing to tolerate?
- 12:53Speaker 2: Oh, I would say that, man, that was a good question.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I would say that it has to be, I mean,
- 13:01Speaker 3: I think it's both, but I would say it has
- 13:04Speaker 3: to be the players being able to buy in because
- 13:08Speaker 3: we can demand a lot and they could just go
- 13:11Speaker 3: through the motions or never really buy into what we're
- 13:14Speaker 3: really saying. So it really has to be player, you know,
- 13:19Speaker 3: player buy-in and player believing that what we're saying, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 3: is going to help them become the best version of themselves.
- 13:27Speaker 3: And that's why we're doing it through, you know, showing
- 13:30Speaker 3: them like, for instance, the offensive line, like I am,
- 13:34Speaker 3: demanding a lot from them. We're doing tests. We're doing things.
- 13:37Speaker 3: I do voiceovers. I'm trying to install this offense. I'm
- 13:40Speaker 3: trying to teach them the game of football and not
- 13:43Speaker 3: just for spring, but also for the NFL and further development.
- 13:47Speaker 3: And so, you know, with that, they hear this and
- 13:50Speaker 3: they're working really hard, harder than they ever worked. And
- 13:53Speaker 3: they're probably in the back of their mind. They're saying, well,
- 13:54Speaker 3: why am I doing this? Well, they have to have
- 13:57Speaker 3: a belief and understanding that what I'm telling them and
- 14:00Speaker 3: helping them with will help them become, you know, the
- 14:05Speaker 3: player they want to be. So it's always, in my mind,
- 14:08Speaker 3: it's about, you could demand, demand, demand, but if they
- 14:12Speaker 3: don't buy in, they don't truly believe it, then the
- 14:16Speaker 3: culture will never become what you really want. It can
- 14:18Speaker 3: get better, but it will never be, it will never
- 14:21Speaker 3: thrive through adversity. And when it gets tough and that's
- 14:24Speaker 3: when you really know when it gets hard, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 3: in the fourth quarter versus Georgia, if our culture isn't right,
- 14:32Speaker 3: then we're going to break. If our culture is right,
- 14:34Speaker 3: then we're going to be able to, or we're down
- 14:36Speaker 3: or we lose a, you know, a star player. That's
- 14:40Speaker 3: when your culture is really, you know, really tested. And
- 14:43Speaker 3: that's when you truly find out. So that's what these
- 14:46Speaker 3: workouts are doing. That's what them understanding our, our four
- 14:50Speaker 3: core values. And then, you know, doing that and understanding
- 14:54Speaker 3: why and pushing them. So they have to buy in and,
- 14:59Speaker 3: and we have to help them and show them and,
- 15:02Speaker 3: get them to understand why.
- 15:04Speaker 1: You talked earlier in this interview, but I've also seen
- 15:07Speaker 1: in other interviews you've given, you've talked about no talent things.
- 15:11Speaker 1: If I watched your offensive line for a full practice,
- 15:15Speaker 1: what would I see that reflects that NTT in action?
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, of course they're going to be tough.
- 15:23Speaker 3: You know, they're going to finish. They're going to be,
- 15:25Speaker 3: you know, high energy. They're going to, they're going to
- 15:28Speaker 3: run off the ball. They're going to have great technique
- 15:30Speaker 3: and fundamentals. They're going to communicate. They're going to understand,
- 15:36Speaker 3: you know, the game of football. They're going to understand
- 15:38Speaker 3: the offense, which all those things I talked about are
- 15:41Speaker 3: the no talent things like being fundamentally sound, being tough,
- 15:45Speaker 3: being physical are things that, you know, take no talent.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So being great at those are what you're going to see.
- 15:53Speaker 3: You're going to see an offensive line that's relentless, that's tough,
- 15:57Speaker 3: that has great technique and fundamentals and that love football.
- 16:03Speaker 1: You and over the course of your career have sent
- 16:06Speaker 1: three star guys and even zero star guys to the
- 16:10Speaker 1: first round. When you are evaluating a recruit, what are
- 16:15Speaker 1: you seeing that rankings don't measure?
- 16:18Speaker 3: You know, a lot of it comes down to heart
- 16:22Speaker 3: and determination.
- 16:24Speaker 2: As you know, our line is very developmental.
- 16:27Speaker 3: So having a guy that works hard and has overcome
- 16:30Speaker 3: any weaknesses, like Every single offense lineman out there, maybe
- 16:34Speaker 3: there's one or two that don't have any. I mean,
- 16:36Speaker 3: they all have weaknesses right now because they're high school
- 16:39Speaker 3: kids that really don't know and aren't developed. But, you know,
- 16:44Speaker 3: they have to know that it's going to be a
- 16:45Speaker 3: process and they're willing to work and grind and overcome
- 16:50Speaker 3: any deficiencies that they have. So, you know, the inside,
- 16:54Speaker 3: the heart. you know, what they really truly are core
- 16:57Speaker 3: deep down. And I have to do that by building
- 16:59Speaker 3: a relationship with them and really get to understand them
- 17:02Speaker 3: and really know them so that I can push them.
- 17:05Speaker 3: And I'm, and they're willing to be pushed and be coached.
- 17:08Speaker 3: So that's, that's like number one. And then, you know,
- 17:12Speaker 3: with that comes toughness and, and the love of the
- 17:16Speaker 3: game and, you know, then athleticism, great feet. And I
- 17:22Speaker 3: know like, let's say they're, You know, some some reason
- 17:25Speaker 3: they have them a three star. It might be they're
- 17:27Speaker 3: not flexible or they maybe don't have fast enough feet
- 17:30Speaker 3: or they're not they don't bend as well or they're
- 17:33Speaker 3: maybe not powerful yet. But what I've found are if
- 17:38Speaker 3: the kid really wants to be, he will overcome it
- 17:41Speaker 3: with something else. Maybe it's understanding the game, understanding or
- 17:46Speaker 3: if he's not super flexible, he'll do yoga three times
- 17:49Speaker 3: a week because he's willing to do those things that
- 17:51Speaker 3: maybe no one else wants to do. And it kind
- 17:53Speaker 3: of comes down to the no talent thing. So having
- 17:56Speaker 3: them buy in to that and, you know, I've been
- 18:00Speaker 3: able to develop and if they want to be developed
- 18:03Speaker 3: and they want a great relationship, then, you know, I've
- 18:06Speaker 3: been able to, you know, push them through those moments
- 18:10Speaker 3: and those times and help them through them because they
- 18:12Speaker 3: want to be coached and they know that, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 3: I'm pushing them and I'm giving them everything I got.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And so they're able to overcome that and prove a
- 18:21Speaker 3: lot of people wrong.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Now, I'm not going to hold you to this answer
- 18:25Speaker 1: because I can't even imagine how you even start to
- 18:27Speaker 1: evaluate what you have when you haven't seen them work
- 18:30Speaker 1: together in person yet. But how do you feel about
- 18:32Speaker 1: the State of the Oat line room?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there's a lot of talent.
- 18:39Speaker 3: We got some guys that are coming back that played
- 18:41Speaker 3: a lot of football, which is great. And I got
- 18:45Speaker 3: some guys in the portal that I feel really good about.
- 18:47Speaker 3: We have some young guys that are eager to learn.
- 18:51Speaker 3: The one thing I can tell you is that they
- 18:54Speaker 3: all want to be great. They all really are working hard.
- 18:59Speaker 3: I think I can get them to work harder. I'm
- 19:01Speaker 3: going to keep pushing them to do that. I truly
- 19:04Speaker 3: believe that they truly want to be good football players.
- 19:08Speaker 3: They want to play. There's competition in the room, which
- 19:12Speaker 3: is always good. I truly believe we should have I
- 19:19Speaker 3: think we'll have a good offensive line when it's all
- 19:22Speaker 3: said and done, and I think we'll have depth going
- 19:25Speaker 3: into week one.
- 19:27Speaker 1: In the media availability last week, you talked a little
- 19:30Speaker 1: bit about recruiting, and you said Florida won't always be
- 19:33Speaker 1: the highest bidder. How do you win recruiting battles in
- 19:36Speaker 1: that environment without promising money or immediate starting jobs and
- 19:41Speaker 1: making sure you get guys that care about the logo
- 19:43Speaker 1: on the front of the jersey?
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that's through just the recruiting process and Bill relationships
- 19:51Speaker 3: and getting them to understand like, you know, because someone's
- 19:55Speaker 3: always going to look at just like in jobs, like
- 19:58Speaker 3: they know that one, if you can go somewhere to
- 20:01Speaker 3: be developed or you can.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Go this place because it could help you further your career.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:06Speaker 3: That place is more valuable. So what do people do?
- 20:09Speaker 3: They'll say, we'll come here and we'll pay you more money.
- 20:12Speaker 3: So that's kind of what, what people will do. Like
- 20:15Speaker 3: people will try to outbid us, but if you're willing
- 20:18Speaker 3: to put in the work and understand that development takes time,
- 20:23Speaker 3: I'm going to develop you. I'm going to give you
- 20:24Speaker 3: everything I got every day. And in the long-term return,
- 20:28Speaker 3: you know, is you become going to the NFL and
- 20:32Speaker 3: being a first round draft pick. Like, you know, the
- 20:35Speaker 3: first round draft picks are making guaranteed 20 plus million dollars. Well,
- 20:39Speaker 3: what's the difference of, you know, being in college and
- 20:42Speaker 3: maybe making whatever it is less right for you to
- 20:46Speaker 3: be developed and make that long-term money and generations of wealth,
- 20:52Speaker 3: you know, being coached and also being somewhere where, you know, you,
- 20:56Speaker 3: you feel like you're being loved and cared about and
- 21:00Speaker 3: getting to be the best version of yourself.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You have been a part of a really successful staff.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Penn State made it to the playoffs when you were there. Obviously,
- 21:10Speaker 1: as a player, you won two national championships. And I
- 21:13Speaker 1: think the best coaches, the best athletes, the best businessmen
- 21:19Speaker 1: learn to emulate great leaders that they're around. But they also,
- 21:23Speaker 1: maybe the very best, learn what not to do as well.
- 21:26Speaker 1: What is something you've seen in the programs that you've
- 21:29Speaker 1: been around that you think maybe you're going to do
- 21:30Speaker 1: differently now that you're in charge?
- 21:35Speaker 2: Oh, man, that's a good question. I've never I don't
- 21:37Speaker 2: think I've ever thought about that.
- 21:39Speaker 3: You know, I honestly like I mean, I don't know
- 21:42Speaker 3: if if being a head coach is something that I
- 21:45Speaker 3: truly want to do. You know, a lot of people
- 21:48Speaker 3: ask me, would I ever be an OC or anything
- 21:51Speaker 3: like that? Like right now, I just want to be
- 21:53Speaker 3: the best offensive line coach in the country. And I
- 21:56Speaker 3: want to get here. I want to get Florida back
- 21:59Speaker 3: to where, you know, we're all proud. And that's honestly
- 22:04Speaker 3: like I did. If I didn't get this job, I
- 22:08Speaker 3: probably would have waited and went to the NFL just
- 22:12Speaker 3: because I didn't know if I could deal with NIL
- 22:16Speaker 3: and changing a room for somewhere that I truly didn't love.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And I truly like I didn't want to do that
- 22:22Speaker 3: all over again. And I thought maybe I'll wait for
- 22:25Speaker 3: this opportunity. But, you know, when this opportunity came, I
- 22:29Speaker 3: knew that this is where I always wanted to be.
- 22:32Speaker 2: So that was kind of, you know, my role.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I know that doesn't really answer your question, but, you know,
- 22:37Speaker 3: I haven't really thought about that. You know, I could
- 22:40Speaker 3: tell you, you know, core values, you know, are something
- 22:44Speaker 3: that I truly believe in and having that be the
- 22:47Speaker 3: starting point of your culture. And, you know, I have
- 22:51Speaker 3: had different, you know, Coach Franklin was positive attitude, great
- 22:56Speaker 3: worth ethic, compete in everything you do, must be willing
- 22:58Speaker 3: to sacrifice.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Right?
- 23:00Speaker 3: And here are attitude, toughness, discipline, and love. So I
- 23:04Speaker 3: probably would take a couple of those and make it
- 23:06Speaker 3: my own. But the philosophy of that has to be
- 23:11Speaker 3: true and you have to have your guys believe in
- 23:15Speaker 3: those core values. I know your husband would tell you
- 23:19Speaker 3: ours were a little bit different. I don't know if
- 23:20Speaker 3: you can do all of those. I mean, honesty, treat
- 23:24Speaker 3: women with respect, no guns, no weapons, no stealing. I
- 23:28Speaker 3: don't know if they help you for you know, you
- 23:31Speaker 3: as a human and you as a, you know, as
- 23:34Speaker 3: a husband.
- 23:35Speaker 2: But I know those other.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Core values that I've had, you know, here at Florida
- 23:39Speaker 3: and at Penn State definitely help you as a man.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And help you as a husband.
- 23:46Speaker 1: You showed everybody last week your national championship tattoos. What
- 23:51Speaker 1: do they remind you of more? Is it the wins
- 23:56Speaker 1: or the work it took to get there or the
- 23:58Speaker 1: guys you won with?
- 24:01Speaker 3: I mean, just the whole experience. You know, my journey
- 24:05Speaker 3: here wasn't easy. You know, freshman year, you know, they
- 24:10Speaker 3: all got fired, right? Coach Zook got fired. Then came
- 24:14Speaker 3: Coach Meyer. You know, Coach Meyer, believe it or not,
- 24:17Speaker 3: did not think I was good enough to play at Florida.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I think if there was a transfer pool back then,
- 24:24Speaker 3: I would have been pushed out to go into the
- 24:25Speaker 3: transfer portal. So, you know, I never, you know, and
- 24:29Speaker 3: then I didn't start till my junior year. So it
- 24:32Speaker 3: was really just that what I've been through, the journey
- 24:35Speaker 3: that I had, the journey that all of us had,
- 24:38Speaker 3: ups and downs, the good and the bad, and all
- 24:41Speaker 3: the hard work that it took to, you know, be
- 24:44Speaker 3: able to win two national championships and do something that
- 24:48Speaker 3: not a lot of programs and universities have been able
- 24:50Speaker 3: to do. And, you know, it's pretty special to me
- 24:54Speaker 3: to be able to do that and with all the
- 24:56Speaker 3: guys I played with. and all the, you know, midnight
- 25:00Speaker 3: massacres and the, and all the things we talked about
- 25:03Speaker 3: early in the program. I mean, the mat drills and
- 25:06Speaker 3: it just, it shows, you know, all that hard work
- 25:09Speaker 3: paid off. Cause if we didn't get that, you know,
- 25:12Speaker 3: I probably wouldn't be on the zoom with you right now.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So it's just, it's everything that came into play to
- 25:19Speaker 3: be able to do that.
- 25:21Speaker 1: All right. This is the last question. It's an important one.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I asked coach Summerall this as well, and he had
- 25:26Speaker 1: a great answer and, It's been a lot of years.
- 25:28Speaker 1: So I'm going to guess that Natty light pitchers at
- 25:30Speaker 1: Grog will not be how you celebrate anymore. So when
- 25:34Speaker 1: you win your first rivalry game back, uh, in orange
- 25:39Speaker 1: and blue, what are you going to be toasting with?
- 25:44Speaker 2: Oh man, I don't even know. I probably just smoke
- 25:46Speaker 2: a cigar.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Um, to be honest with you, uh, or some vodka
- 25:52Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I'm not a big drinker.
- 25:54Speaker 3: I'll probably do a nice cigar and just sit and
- 25:57Speaker 3: relax and just enjoy it a little bit longer.
- 26:01Speaker 1: All right. I love that answer. Well, Phil, I appreciate it.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I know Gator fans are going to be so excited
- 26:06Speaker 1: to hear this. Welcome back. We are so glad that
- 26:09Speaker 1: you are back in the orange and blue where you belong.
- 26:12Speaker 1: And we're going to have to do this again soon.
- 26:13Speaker 2: All right. Sounds good. Thank you so much for having me.
