- 0:48Napier and fireball. Matt Marcini is at the game in
- 0:51Lawrence so good for him. He's going to get to wave the
- 0:55wheat right back at some of those KU fans who are probably
- 0:59dejected, pissed off, sad, angry, all of those emotions,
- 1:03and we'd love to see it as the streak turns 17 years old.

- 1:48Cocaine Willy sent you. All right, so chef is joining
- 1:52us, joining us. No video on this time, but we
- 1:55wanted to get an instant action out there for the people.
- 1:59Chef, how are you feeling as the cats take the victory?
- 2:0242 which should have been 4942 to 17 in Lawrence, KS.
- 2:08I've never felt so good delivering mail on a Saturday
- 2:12when I have to work and the cats are on and I do right now.
- 2:15I mean, it's just a beautiful feeling smashing The Jayhawks
- 2:20when everybody's nervous about it and I'm just casually putting
- 2:24paper into mailboxes and not a care in the world.
- 2:28Like I didn't feel threatened at all.
- 2:31It's never not great. It's never not great.
- 2:33Beating The Jayhawks, obviously the score 42 to 17.
- 2:37This brings K State to four and four overall in the season.
- 2:40They're back to 500. They are three and two in Big 12
- 2:44play. So definitely a top half team in
- 2:46the Big 12 as far as the the standings are concerned when
- 2:49they take that V1 of the only a few two loss or or fewer teams
- 2:53right now. Avery Johnson, I was pretty
- 2:57impressed today. There were obviously some
- 2:58moments where he wasn't the sharpest, but overall 11 for
- 3:0317231 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.
- 3:07Obviously he had that beautiful ball to Jace on the 78 yard
- 3:11touchdown pass to Jace that I think really kind of sealed the
- 3:15victory for K State that that got them up to 35 to 17 and, and
- 3:19really at that point the game was was pretty much over.
- 3:22What What are your thoughts on Avery's play today, Chef?
- 3:25Yeah, I mean, you you said he wasn't sharp at some points, but
- 3:28I mean, realistically, there was only one throw that I saw that
- 3:33wasn't the best, that that was a a play that could have been had.
- 3:38And then there's there's the parts where I think you're
- 3:40talking about where it's missed opportunities on the broadcast.
- 3:45They showed Jeron Ted's running wide open when the game was
- 3:48still, you know, there was a chance that we could have buried
- 3:51them even further. And he missed those
- 3:54opportunities. And it's just it's little things
- 3:56like that. But All in all, one of the best
- 4:00performances in the Sunflower Showdown that he's had.
- 4:03And you know that it's just a beautiful thing to see.
- 4:06Also, I mean, this is a real shot at the, the, you know, the
- 4:10detractors that are saying, OK, Jalen Daniels is having a good
- 4:14season, but he is a better quarterback than Avery Johnson.
- 4:19We've we've seen the track record.
- 4:21We know what's what the what is, we know what the up and up is of
- 4:25Avery Johnson. And for people that even put
- 4:28that out into the universe, it just really shows that Avery
- 4:32Johnson is at one level and you know, Daniels is at another.
- 4:38So it's it it, it was a beautiful moment for Avery
- 4:42Johnson to seal it and send Jalen Daniels out with no wins
- 4:46versus K State. And, and one of the big
- 4:48storylines coming into this game was on paper, Jalen Daniels and
- 4:52Avery Johnson this season were were pretty similar.
- 4:54But Avery in this game with the 231 yards, he he's inching
- 4:58closer and closer to where Daniels was coming into this
- 5:01matchup. But I think the real story for
- 5:03Avery today was we saw him, we saw him using his legs, we saw
- 5:06him really acting as a dual threat quarterback.
- 5:09He had 6 carries for 17 yards. But you know, it's, it's not
- 5:14flashing off the stat, the stat line, but the moments that he
- 5:19needed to run, he, he really took control.
- 5:21He had two touchdowns on the ground as well in this game.
- 5:24And, and that's what really sticks, sticks out to me.
- 5:26He wasn't afraid to, to, to use his legs and, and do it in, in
- 5:30situations where he needed, needed to get a couple of yards
- 5:34here, there. So that, that was probably the
- 5:36biggest thing for me with Avery in this game.
- 5:38And, and I, I don't want to, I don't, I don't want to over
- 5:40shadow this either. Jace Brown with 160 yards on 4
- 5:45receptions with a touchdown, averaging 40 yards per catch and
- 5:50having the long of 78. I your your player prophecy
- 5:53coming into this game, chef, I'll just let you gloat about
- 5:56your player prophecy and and gloat about Jace a little bit.
- 5:59Yeah, Jace is I I saw it coming in this game.
- 6:04Just because of what the bye week means for a team that is
- 6:09struggling in one aspect. And when KU is one of the worst
- 6:13run defense teams in the country, they're going to
- 6:16establish that and it's going to leave their formations to stop
- 6:20the run safeties in the box, one-on-one coverage on the
- 6:24outside. And that is really what Jason
- 6:26Brown does. Well, I mean, we saw it last
- 6:29year versus Colorado. You leave him one-on-one with no
- 6:32safety help, he's going to get you off of the line and he's
- 6:35going to be able to make the catch deep down the field.
- 6:37That's what Jason Brown brought to the game.
- 6:40I thought he would be more used in the intermediate, but he was
- 6:45that deep ball threat, like you said, 40 yards per catch, 4
- 6:48catches you. It seemed like he had the ball
- 6:50so much more and that's because of the jet sweeps, the Wildcat
- 6:54situation that he had. He's he got involved, but
- 6:58through the air. It was just so explosive and
- 7:00Avery Johnson found him so much. It was beautiful.
- 7:03I I think I said 7 for 105 in a TUD.
- 7:07I mean, I'll take this because I'm going to take those.
- 7:10I was going to take those. I'll take those rushes as you
- 7:13know, catches or whatever. And I'm think I'm right on pace.
- 7:17He's just he just exceeded what I expected to happen in this
- 7:20game. Jay Sprout is the man.
- 7:23Jay and he's a Jayhawk killer. This is what, his third, third
- 7:26season in a row where he puts up just great numbers against The
- 7:29Jayhawks. I want to talk about the
- 7:31defense. So the, the Joe Clanderman
- 7:34dialed it up today. There, there were obviously some
- 7:37moments, some drives where, you know, and, and I think back
- 7:40maybe to that first drive, it was, it was an unfortunate
- 7:43situation where we muffed the kick return.
- 7:45KU gets the ball, they they fumble it into the end zone.
- 7:48Honestly, it shouldn't have been a touchdown, but they were able,
- 7:52they, they were able to score pretty easily on that drive.
- 7:54And then the other drive where where they got their other
- 7:56touchdown were able to score pretty easily.
- 7:58But the big headline for me here is they were able to hold Jalen
- 8:02Daniels to a season low in passing yards, not a season low
- 8:05and rushing the ball, but a season low of 129 yards passing,
- 8:091 interception, which that's about all you can ask for from
- 8:13from this K State defense going up against Jalen Daniels, who
- 8:17has been playing probably his best football he's played in his
- 8:20career. What, what do you want to say
- 8:22about Klanderman? What do you want to say about
- 8:23some of the some of the defensive personnel in this
- 8:26game? Realistically, the last few
- 8:29weeks, even even Baylor and and to somewhat no, I don't want to
- 8:34go that far. I was going to say that that I
- 8:37think the UCF game was a a a pretty valid performance.
- 8:41I was I was even going to go back to Arizona, but Arizona, I
- 8:44mean, they carved us up. It was it was not pretty UCF on
- 8:49this, this defense has been really playing some of its best
- 8:53ball. Baylor.
- 8:57I knew going into this week that KU was not a better offense than
- 9:00Baylor. And realistically, we played
- 9:04outside of, you know, one of the best tight ends in the country.
- 9:08Trig absolutely nukiness. We played well in that game,
- 9:12creating turnovers all that. This game is the next level of
- 9:16that knowing that they had to run the ball.
- 9:19Daniels was just not efficient as a passer.
- 9:22The he he brought. This is the first game that
- 9:25like, even though Lehman could see like disguising blitz
- 9:31coverages and all of that, he made it so visually appealing to
- 9:37just a regular fan. Dropping a defensive end,
- 9:41bringing multiple pressures from different places.
- 9:44And that's what you kind of have to do against a guy that seen a
- 9:47lot of football in a in a adverse situation when he's down
- 9:52and he's got to force the ball down the field.
- 9:54This was a perfect Klanderman situations from especially when
- 9:59they were down early. I mean, you were just not
- 10:01expecting a short field right off the jump when you were
- 10:04expecting to have the ball. So I give all the credit to Joe
- 10:08Klanderman. He played.
- 10:09He played. Called his butt off today.
- 10:12And and it felt more reminiscent of the K state defenses that
- 10:16we've come to know and love from Clanderman and Climan over the
- 10:19last few seasons since 2019 when when Climan, when Climan took
- 10:23over, but realistically 2020 when Clanderman became the
- 10:25defensive coordinator. But just talking about some of
- 10:28the stats here, you've got Desmond Pernell, Malcolm Alcorn,
- 10:32Crowder, Ryan Davis, Jordan Allen, Chi OB IS or those guys
- 10:35all registered at least a half a sack on the day.
- 10:37We've got past deflections from Des Wesley Fair, Daniel Cobbs 2
- 10:42from Ryan Davis, this one from VJ Payne, one from TD1 from USO,
- 10:46even getting on the board there. And then you've got Ralph Ortiz
- 10:50with the scoop and score. You've got interceptions from
- 10:52Cobbs and and Gunner Maldonado. Just I, I haven't seen this many
- 10:57guys pop off the stat sheet from K State in a really, really long
- 11:00time and was just across the board.
- 11:03I was incredibly impressed with the defense.
- 11:05Not the best day from a guy like Austin Romain, but I think the
- 11:09sign. The.
- 11:10Sign of a good defense is being able to have all the other guys
- 11:13around your star players when you're not having your best day,
- 11:16being able to elevate their own level of play, stepping up and
- 11:19and filling that void, and we absolutely saw that from
- 11:22everybody else on this roster. And here's what and all the
- 11:26credits of all those other players.
- 11:28I think everybody outside, I'll say this about Romaine because
- 11:32I'm going to I'm going to highlight him in the only
- 11:35negative that I can really find on the defense today.
- 11:38There was what maybe one or two busted coverages, but outside of
- 11:41that, there was really nothing. Austin Romaine, I knew going
- 11:46into this seat that he was getting a overhyped.
- 11:49Now I will say this about him today.
- 11:52He was in position a lot of the time athletically.
- 11:58He's more of a straight line guy in open field.
- 12:00He was, he's never been a good open field guy.
- 12:03He never has been in a phone book.
- 12:05If you put Austin Romain back in his freshman year 1989 and and
- 12:11let him play out his career that he has now, he'd probably be the
- 12:14best linebacker in the country. Let's be honest.
- 12:17I mean, he's a straight line. Go get the dive play kind of
- 12:21tackler. But today he just was not that
- 12:24in open field. He was in position and and I
- 12:28think a lot of it has to do with injury.
- 12:31You look at he's got a giant cast on he he's not he doesn't
- 12:35have all his full faculties for his at his disposal.
- 12:40And that's where the I think a lot of it is in open field.
- 12:43He was embarrassed a couple times, but a lot of those would
- 12:46be wrapped up tackles. If he had an extra arm.
- 12:49You know, if he did giant 12 LB cast on his left arm, he would
- 12:54be he would have had a really good day.
- 12:56It's just he just wasn't there and he wasn't at full strength.
- 13:00I don't say that you could have, you know, rested him and had
- 13:03somebody else play, but he just wasn't at his peak physical
- 13:07ability and it showed. But like you said, when
- 13:11everybody else is there to pick him up, it's it's awesome.
- 13:14That's how the the lynch mob, it's got to be a mob.
- 13:17And they all showed up. That they did that they did so
- 13:21one of the last things I want to talk about here is the the
- 13:24implications for this game in the series against KUN and I
- 13:29also want to talk big picture. But but before we get into the
- 13:32big picture, looking just at this rivalry, you know, the the
- 13:35streak turns 17 this this year. A lot of people, including
- 13:40myself and and, and Matt were saying kind of if not now, when
- 13:44for KU and, and if if it wasn't going to happen in this year,
- 13:48where K State's having a down year and and not their not their
- 13:52best year and in a while, if they can't get the win this
- 13:55year, when is it going to come? And, and we've seen so many
- 13:57close games these last three matchups, But I, I was just
- 14:01stunned to see the margin of victory for K State, First off.
- 14:04But secondly, I guess I'm just curious, when you look at this
- 14:07rivalry, you look at this series big picture, what do you think
- 14:11this game means in, in, in general, when you think about K
- 14:14State versus KU, the Sunflower Showdown in general, in the
- 14:16street, kind of in the grand scheme of things?
- 14:20My the first thing that comes to mind is what is Lance Lance
- 14:23Leipold's future? I I don't know what what is,
- 14:29what is Kansas's expectations? I don't I don't necessarily know
- 14:36what they what they look forward to in a football season because
- 14:41Lance Lipold, outside of that one season where I think they
- 14:45went nine and four, he has done nothing.
- 14:48He has not. I mean, he's elevated the
- 14:50program to almost a 500 grand, but they just don't do it
- 14:54consistently. And when you have a team like
- 14:57that, like think of like all a lot of the big, the Big 10
- 15:02teams, Big 10 teams have rivalry games that they can hang their
- 15:06hat on. And Kansas does not win those.
- 15:10And what do they what do they look forward to in a football
- 15:13season? And what is Lance Leipold
- 15:15brought if they're not looking forward to be a 500 win team?
- 15:19I look at that for this series that this might be the, the
- 15:23final nail in the coffin of what fans really have on the leash
- 15:28for Lance Leipold. I think his leash is really,
- 15:31really short. And then I look at the future,
- 15:37like you guys said, if not now, then when, because I would
- 15:41expect. And All in all, I think Avery
- 15:45Johnson comes back. In my opinion.
- 15:47I think Avery Johnson comes back and he he went his he's going to
- 15:51be a senior. I think that alone is a nail in
- 15:56the coffin of Kansas's football season.
- 15:59Next year to try to beat K State, then you're looking
- 16:02forward. I don't.
- 16:02And if you're looking at a coaching change somewhere in the
- 16:06next two years at KUI, just don't see how it's possible that
- 16:10they're going to be able to beat us because our talent roster is
- 16:13fine. It is not.
- 16:14This is probably one of the, you know, the better teams in the
- 16:17past like five years in terms of on paper, I just don't, I don't
- 16:22see where KU can get it going. I just don't.
- 16:25I don't obviously I don't follow KU recruiting all that well.
- 16:28And you know, they put all their eggs into their basket I think
- 16:32this year and it's just not it. They just can't get it done.
- 16:36It's hilarious. I had to queue up the light pole
- 16:47laugh there, there. I had to do it.
- 16:48You're bringing up light pole and it being hilarious, so I had
- 16:51to queue that up. I want to talk big picture in
- 16:53the Big 12 now. So this brings your Big 12
- 16:55conference record to three and two.
- 16:57Obviously army game doesn't matter at this point.
- 17:01The only games that matter at this point are losing to Baylor
- 17:04and losing to Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland.
- 17:06K State's now three and two and this puts them at 6th place as,
- 17:10as things stand here at, you know, 2:34 PM Central time on
- 17:15October 25th. There's obviously a lot of games
- 17:17to be played and some of the some of them happening later
- 17:20today. You've got a kind of a
- 17:21heavyweight matchup between 2-3 and one teams in Big 12 play
- 17:25with Arizona State playing Houston later today.
- 17:28You've got a four team in Cincinnati going up against
- 17:30Baylor, which I think it's win or go home if you're Baylor,
- 17:33like if you if you don't win that game, you're probably
- 17:36packing it in for the rest of the season.
- 17:38So I think this is Baylor's kind of last stand, for lack of a
- 17:41better way to put it. And then I mean, Texas Tech's
- 17:44playing Oklahoma State, that'll be an easy win.
- 17:45But BYU going on the road against Iowa State, not going to
- 17:48be an easy match up, I don't think for the Cougars, who sit
- 17:50atop the conference at four and O right now and seven and O, the
- 17:53last undefeated team in the Big 12 overall for the season.
- 17:58What do you think this means? Do you think Arlington is still
- 18:01out there? Do you think this is still on
- 18:03the table? I, I can't say Arlington's on
- 18:08the table. I mean, I, I think there's a lot
- 18:10of teams at the top that are still vying for it.
- 18:14I think there's a lot of teams. I think there is a clear line of
- 18:18denomination in terms of like expectations and talent.
- 18:22I don't know if Kansas State's in that tier.
- 18:24Did I? Lose you or did you lose me?
- 18:28I think I'm losing everybody. My service is bad I guess.
- 18:32OK, my my. Whole computer just died, so
- 18:35apologies to those listening to this live.
- 18:38We're back. Go on, though, right?
- 18:40Go on. Yeah.
- 18:40Go on with where you were, OK? I I was just saying next week is
- 18:45going to be a huge pivotal game. Now talk to me next week if if
- 18:49somehow, someway the Manhattan's going to be bubbling.
- 18:53It's going to be brewing in anticipation of the Texas Tech
- 18:57Red Raiders coming into town. That I think they're they're
- 19:01fine. I think they're going to get a
- 19:02dub. I think this is like the
- 19:05opposite of, you know, those ones where we're going to be
- 19:09living and breathing for for off of this KU game where it's it's
- 19:13going to be a distraction. I think this pole vaulted us
- 19:16into new expectations, but I, I have to see it.
- 19:21I have to see it. I am, I'm honestly impressed
- 19:24with the resolve of this team the last few weeks.
- 19:28But Texas Tech is a different breed.
- 19:30It's a different monster, but they are not invincible.
- 19:33We saw what Arizona State could do to them.
- 19:35Can we do something similar? Can we win in the margins
- 19:40similar to, you know, how we won today with defensive, defensive
- 19:44touch or special teams touchdowns and stuff like that?
- 19:48If we keep it clean, if we have good weather in Manhattan, we
- 19:52could keep their defense. You know, we can get a couple
- 19:56scores on their very, very highly talented defense and
- 19:59bottle up whatever they have going on in the run game because
- 20:03I'm not impressed with the quarterback play at all at Texas
- 20:06Tech. So it's going to be going
- 20:09forward. I'm really just talking about
- 20:10that match up because I think it looking forward to the season
- 20:13and where we stand in terms of the tier list.
- 20:15I think that is the most pivotal game next week.
- 20:19It's going to be huge. Yeah, that that, that if you if
- 20:23you are able to get a win against Texas Tech, that brings
- 20:25you to five and five and four on the year.
- 20:28So you're one game away from bowl eligibility with Oklahoma
- 20:31State and Colorado still on the schedule.
- 20:33Obviously that game at Utah is going to be a tough test, but I
- 20:36think and also screw the weather, man.
- 20:38This is the first time we've had a game in precipitation when
- 20:41we've been able to get a sizable win.
- 20:44So, so hey, maybe maybe the the demons of the weather are
- 20:48finally behind us. But man, I I think that game
- 20:50against Texas Tech next week, it's going to be huge.
- 20:53It was a six day selection for for game time.
- 20:56So still TBD on when that game is going to kick off, but it
- 20:59could be reaching a a fever pitch in Manhattan next week
- 21:02with with K State pulling off the victory here.
- 21:05But I don't have anything else that that I want to touch on
- 21:08Chef, anything else that you have before we get out of here
- 21:11today. No, I, I really enjoyed this win
- 21:14and I I'm looking it's giving me a new 1st of energy into this
- 21:20season. I think it, it's, it's kind of
- 21:22OK. I don't want to say this, but
- 21:24it's very similar. It's very similar to what
- 21:27basketball did for me last year. You realize like you had that
- 21:30stretch where you're beating really top to your teams and it
- 21:34gives you that new energy, that renewed energy into the season.
- 21:37Maybe something can happen. I'm not, I'm not entirely there
- 21:40yet, but like I am, I'm really happy with the team the last few
- 21:44weeks in the resolve that they had.
- 21:47For sure, I'm I'm right there with you.
- 21:48It's, it's obviously not, it's not going to change what's
- 21:52already happened this season, right?
- 21:53Like you, you've already dropped those games that that win loss
- 21:56record is not changing. You still have to get two more
- 21:59ones to even make a bowl game at this point.
- 22:02But if you are able to pull off the impossible against Texas
- 22:06Tech next week, I think that that changes the math in a lot
- 22:09of ways for a lot of different things for K state this season.
- 22:12So it could be really, really interesting it it could have you
- 22:16rallying for very different bowl positioning if you're able to
- 22:18pull that off. So keep dreaming K state fans.
- 22:21We'll we'll see what happens here.
- 22:22We we thought this this season might have been over after that
- 22:25army game or even after that Arizona game.
- 22:27But things are still very much alive.
- 22:29The cats are three and one in their last four games.
- 22:32They moved to three and two in the Big 12 with this win against
- 22:36KU again, 42 to 17, pulling out the win in Lawrence.
- 22:39That's going to do it for us today.
