Latest / Outspoken the Podcast / Georgie Stevenson's Tone Deaf Fuel Flex
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Outspoken. It's your dose of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: hottest influencer and pop culture news twice a week. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sophie Torber. I'm Kate Torber.
- 0:11Speaker 2: And I'm Amy Torber.
- 0:13Speaker 1: And coming up on today's show, Moana Hope calls out
- 0:16Speaker 1: homophobic attack and Ash Pollard exposes.
- 0:19Speaker 2: A tattletroll who attended her home auction.
- 0:22Speaker 1: But first, Georgie Stevenson has been criticised for leveraging the
- 0:27Speaker 1: global fuel crisis to flaunt her own wealth and success.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The entrepreneur has been labelled tone deaf, infuriating and insensitive. Now, Soph,
- 0:36Speaker 1: people have been outraged by this post. Yeah, it has
- 0:39Speaker 1: caused a lot of upset and frustration because, I mean,
- 0:42Speaker 1: last week, you can't underestimate what an incredibly tough week
- 0:45Speaker 1: that was for so many Australians. Not only are we
- 0:48Speaker 1: dealing with a surge in petrol prices due to the
- 0:51Speaker 1: Iran war, but mortgage holders were also slammed with yet
- 0:54Speaker 1: another rate rise this due to rising inflation. And there
- 0:57Speaker 1: are also worrying reports that we are set for a recession.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I mean, grocery bills are also at an all-time high.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I stumbled across this TikTok series where a creator shared
- 1:08Speaker 1: what she has called the most fucked fines at Coles.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And in the video, a punnet of strawberries was $ 7. 50,
- 1:16Speaker 1: whereas a box of Lindt chocolate was $ 36. I've also
- 1:19Speaker 1: seen so many families across TikTok and social media saying
- 1:23Speaker 1: that Easter is pretty much cancelled this year because people
- 1:27Speaker 1: simply can't afford the astronomical prices that we're seeing for chocolate.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't mean to fearmonger, but it seems
- 1:32Speaker 2: like it's only going to get worse with this fuel crisis.
- 1:35Speaker 2: The news are reporting that food prices could go up
- 1:38Speaker 2: an extra 50%. So everyone is on edge. I mean,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I know I've been Googling the Iran war before I
- 1:42Speaker 2: go to bed, which is absolutely ridiculous. My husband keeps
- 1:44Speaker 2: telling me off for it, but I just feel like
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm in a bit of a state of panic. If
- 1:48Speaker 2: I'm being completely honest, I've had tears this week over
- 1:52Speaker 2: my rising mortgage and just how expensive everything is. It
- 1:55Speaker 2: can feel particularly overwhelming. I mean, I've been on maternity
- 1:58Speaker 2: leave for most of the year and the government pay.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Is very minimal.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think it's fair to say a lot
- 2:04Speaker 2: of our listeners and other Australians would be feeling just
- 2:07Speaker 2: like you have been, Sophie, which is why it is
- 2:10Speaker 2: so strange that in this economic climate, Georgie thought, hey,
- 2:14Speaker 2: this is the perfect time to flaunt my wealth and
- 2:16Speaker 2: success to my followers and remind them that they simply
- 2:19Speaker 2: are just struggling because of their poor mindset, which can
- 2:22Speaker 2: be fixed, hey, by one of my self-help courses.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so in this reel, Georgie was sipping a smoothie
- 2:28Speaker 1: in her mansion with the caption, some people choose to
- 2:31Speaker 1: complain about the cost of fuel. Other people choose to
- 2:34Speaker 1: build their own success, co-own three companies and buy a
- 2:38Speaker 1: Porsche at 28 years old.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I am other people. How did you feel when you
- 2:43Speaker 2: saw the real pop-up? I actually first saw her on
- 2:46Speaker 2: Influencer Updates AU's story. And I was like, oh, hang on,
- 2:50Speaker 2: surely I'm missing something. This can't be it. Like maybe
- 2:53Speaker 2: the caption actually explains what's going on. Like surely she
- 2:57Speaker 2: can't be this tone deaf.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, because I generally find Georgie's content quite motivating and
- 3:03Speaker 1: she is someone who has inspired a lot of women.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I was quite taken aback by it. It felt like
- 3:08Speaker 1: a slap in the face. I actually showed my husband
- 3:10Speaker 1: and he's like, surely she's trolling. Surely she doesn't actually
- 3:13Speaker 1: mean this. And as you can imagine, this post elicited
- 3:17Speaker 1: a massive response I want to share some of the
- 3:20Speaker 1: comments from listeners in our Facebook community. So one listener wrote,
- 3:23Speaker 1: oh my God, read the room. Another said, I have
- 3:27Speaker 1: secondhand embarrassment for her. Imagine using the fuel crisis as
- 3:31Speaker 1: an opportunity to remind everyone that you're rich and successful.
- 3:34Speaker 1: This is by far the most out of touch thing
- 3:37Speaker 1: I have ever seen someone say.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Lol.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Another listener said, her business and you harvest must use
- 3:43Speaker 1: a horse and cart for transport. She might not be
- 3:45Speaker 1: other people when the cost of fuel eats into their margins.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Whilst another said, what's her point? She still has to
- 3:51Speaker 1: pay for fuel, right? How will she get to her
- 3:54Speaker 1: nail appointments if the fuel dries up? How will her
- 3:57Speaker 1: brand be able to deliver the products if they can't
- 3:59Speaker 1: use their truck or delivery services? She's going to be
- 4:02Speaker 1: crying when some people can't afford to buy her products
- 4:04Speaker 1: anymore because they can't afford it. Now, if things couldn't
- 4:07Speaker 1: get worse for Georgie, she also incorrectly spelt Porsche, which
- 4:13Speaker 1: led to further criticism. So one user wrote, if she
- 4:15Speaker 1: can't spell Porsche, imagine her understanding the issue. while another
- 4:19Speaker 1: said she is clearly so uneducated she doesn't realize the
- 4:21Speaker 1: bigger picture and how this could impact her business. Being
- 4:24Speaker 1: a hashtag girl boss doesn't fix inflation.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Off the back of that comment, I want to point
- 4:29Speaker 2: out that Georgie Stevenson is actually very educated. She has
- 4:32Speaker 2: a law degree. She obviously runs two very successful companies,
- 4:35Speaker 2: which I think is why it's so confusing that she
- 4:38Speaker 2: actually put this statement out there. She's obviously a very
- 4:41Speaker 2: smart person, but has she lost touch with the general public.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Well, it seemed to put some customers off because one
- 4:48Speaker 1: person wrote, oh my God, yuck, I want to cancel
- 4:50Speaker 1: my order. Surely there must be some sort of marketing
- 4:55Speaker 1: plan behind this. I mean, as you said, Georgie Stevenson
- 4:58Speaker 1: is a very clever businesswoman because initially many people thought, oh,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Georgie's deleted this reel following the backlash because people went
- 5:06Speaker 1: over to her page. They couldn't see the reel. But
- 5:09Speaker 1: some clever detective work by Influencer Updates AU has uncovered
- 5:13Speaker 1: that Georgie published this video as what is referred to
- 5:16Speaker 1: as an unlisted reels. So essentially, Instagram allows users to
- 5:20Speaker 1: share content that doesn't appear on their main grid or
- 5:23Speaker 1: their feed, but it is still visible to others through
- 5:26Speaker 1: the algorithm. So instead of feeding content out to the
- 5:29Speaker 1: people who follow you, it actually feeds it out to
- 5:31Speaker 1: new people. So it's so new people can find your
- 5:33Speaker 1: content on the explore page or as a suggested reel.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So the video is still linked to the account. It's
- 5:40Speaker 1: just not prominently displayed for existing followers to see.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So that makes a little bit more sense to me
- 5:45Speaker 2: as to why she put out this controversial message. It's
- 5:47Speaker 2: interesting that she didn't want her normal followers getting it.
- 5:51Speaker 2: She obviously was doing a bit of rage baiting to
- 5:53Speaker 2: try and grow her audience that don't normally engage with
- 5:55Speaker 2: her account.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I mean, it is rage baiting at its finest. And
- 5:59Speaker 1: Georgie Stevenson has been known to attract attention in this way.
- 6:03Speaker 1: A lot of influencers do it. I mean, as you said, Kate,
- 6:06Speaker 1: she clearly knew that this reel was not going to
- 6:07Speaker 1: be popular with her existing audience. It's very in your face.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I mean, in this economic climate, I don't understand any
- 6:13Speaker 2: audience that would respond well to this. I mean, it
- 6:16Speaker 2: just doesn't make sense. Even high-flying business owners who are
- 6:19Speaker 2: multi-millionaires or billionaires are going to be affected by this
- 6:23Speaker 2: fuel crisis. It's not going to discriminate.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And also, her customers are affected by this crisis. They're
- 6:29Speaker 1: not going to have spare money to spend on her
- 6:32Speaker 1: products or her workshop. So this is going to affect
- 6:35Speaker 1: her business's bottom line. I mean, because at the core
- 6:38Speaker 1: of what she's saying, she's saying people who struggle or
- 6:40Speaker 1: complain are choosing the wrong mindset, which comes across as
- 6:43Speaker 1: incredibly dismissive and out of touch for what people are
- 6:46Speaker 1: going through at the moment. I mean, she's projecting herself
- 6:49Speaker 1: as this high achiever and essentially saying, I'm so successful
- 6:52Speaker 1: because I act differently to you and you should invest
- 6:55Speaker 1: in my course if you want to act differently too.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's very in your face.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I'm going to call it. I've always thought manifesting was
- 7:02Speaker 2: bullshit and it's always interested in me that it's white
- 7:06Speaker 2: rich influencers who are women that often push it and
- 7:10Speaker 2: they go, oh, look at this mansion I own. I
- 7:12Speaker 2: got it through manifesting and you can have just what
- 7:15Speaker 2: I have if you buy my course. It's like, hang on,
- 7:18Speaker 2: it's the course and sucking your followers in to try
- 7:21Speaker 2: and trick them into gaining what you've got through manifesting.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's like no one is going to get anything from manifesting.
- 7:27Speaker 1: This style of video reminds me of the business bro
- 7:30Speaker 1: content that targets a lot of male users. It just
- 7:33Speaker 1: makes me so mad because at the moment, so many
- 7:35Speaker 1: Australians are working their fucking asses off. They're working two,
- 7:38Speaker 1: three jobs just to make enough money to scrape by
- 7:42Speaker 1: with their bills and keep a roof over their heads.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yet we've got these out of touch influencers telling us
- 7:47Speaker 1: that we've got the wrong mindset and maybe bills wouldn't
- 7:50Speaker 1: be a problem for you if you had a better
- 7:52Speaker 1: mindset and manifested here and there.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Now, of course, just after we finished recording our segment
- 7:58Speaker 2: on Georgie Stevenson's post, she has come out with a comment. Now,
- 8:02Speaker 2: the comment was actually posted on a TikTok that called
- 8:04Speaker 2: her out. So in the comment section, she wrote, you're
- 8:07Speaker 2: right to call this out. I'm really sorry. This was
- 8:09Speaker 2: posted without my approval from an external content creator who
- 8:13Speaker 2: has been creating trial reels for me, but that doesn't
- 8:16Speaker 2: excuse it being on my page. I understand how tone
- 8:18Speaker 2: deaf it was, especially given what people are dealing with
- 8:21Speaker 2: right now. And I take full responsibility for that. I
- 8:25Speaker 2: wonder if we are going to see Georgie address this
- 8:28Speaker 2: on her own channel or if she is trying to
- 8:31Speaker 2: sweep it under the carpet. I always find it interesting
- 8:33Speaker 2: when influencers go, I'm sorry, but it's hidden in a
- 8:36Speaker 2: comment section on someone else's post. Yeah, but she's obviously
- 8:39Speaker 2: trying to minimize the backlash by just keeping this to
- 8:41Speaker 2: the comment section. She doesn't want to alert all of
- 8:44Speaker 2: her followers that this took place because as we touched on,
- 8:47Speaker 2: this was a reel that was sent out to people
- 8:49Speaker 2: who don't follow her. So she's hoping that majority of
- 8:52Speaker 2: her followers have not seen this. I want to give
- 8:54Speaker 2: her the benefit of the doubt, but it does seem
- 8:56Speaker 2: like a bit of a cop out to say that
- 8:57Speaker 2: it was posted without her approval from an external content creator.
- 9:01Speaker 2: If that was the case, wouldn't it have been deleted swiftly?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Like this has been up for a long time now.
- 9:06Speaker 3: In other news, ladies and gentlemen, there has been a
- 9:09Speaker 3: resounding yes fucking please to unveiling who this ding dong is.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Former MKR contestant Ash Pollard has exposed a tattle troll
- 9:22Speaker 2: who attended her home auction solely to report the sale
- 9:25Speaker 2: price back to the forum. The media personality was able
- 9:29Speaker 2: to identify the individual after they shared a photo showing
- 9:32Speaker 2: exactly where they were standing during the auction. Now Soph,
- 9:36Speaker 2: the tattle user has been a prolific poster in a
- 9:39Speaker 2: thread dedicated to bashing the former reality star. Yeah, that's right.
- 9:43Speaker 1: The woman in question goes by the username Peppy Op.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And Ash shared an example of the types of comments
- 9:49Speaker 1: that Pepeop has been sharing about her on the forum,
- 9:53Speaker 1: including one that said, can't even look after her free Invisalign,
- 9:56Speaker 1: ungrateful twat. Ash then put up a poll asking her
- 10:00Speaker 1: followers if they wanted to see who the knob end was.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And as you can imagine, it was an unequivocal yes,
- 10:07Speaker 1: with 98% of Ash's followers voting for her to share
- 10:10Speaker 1: the tattle user's identity.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So were the 2% tattle users? Probably.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Let's take a listen to what Ash said.
- 10:18Speaker 3: In other news, ladies and gentlemen, there has been a
- 10:21Speaker 3: resounding yes fucking please to unveiling who this ding dong
- 10:28Speaker 3: is that likes to write shit about me on this
- 10:33Speaker 3: forum and also come and look inside my house and
- 10:40Speaker 3: stay for the auction in their free time.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I mean, fuck me, guys.
- 10:45Speaker 3: That's some dedication.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Now, you can see Ash was really having fun with
- 10:50Speaker 2: this because she added a dramatic drum roll for comedic
- 10:53Speaker 2: effect before revealing how she pieced together the woman's identity.
- 10:57Speaker 2: She then shared a screenshot from Tattle Life showing that
- 11:00Speaker 2: Pepe Yop had posted a phone photo she took at
- 11:02Speaker 2: the auction, along with a comment revealing the property sold
- 11:05Speaker 2: for $ 2. 9 million. Now, in the photo, Ash noticed the
- 11:09Speaker 2: back of her neighbor's head and her neighbor has distinctive
- 11:12Speaker 2: red hair. So it was clear the Tattle user was
- 11:15Speaker 2: standing directly behind the neighbor. Ash wrote, old mate takes
- 11:19Speaker 2: a picture from the crowd in the auction. That's my
- 11:21Speaker 2: neighbor's head in front of her. Now, unbeknownst to this
- 11:24Speaker 2: tattle user, Ash had a photo of the crowd gathered
- 11:28Speaker 2: for the auction. So she was able to pinpoint the
- 11:31Speaker 2: tattle user standing directly behind her neighbor. So she then
- 11:34Speaker 2: posted the photo saying, here she is, peppy up, phone
- 11:38Speaker 2: in hand taking notes, lol.
- 11:40Speaker 1: The person in question appeared to be a middle-aged woman
- 11:42Speaker 1: with short brown hair, wearing a white jacket with a
- 11:45Speaker 1: black cross body bag, Now, Ash zoomed up further on
- 11:49Speaker 1: the photo and wrote, that threat on tattle life is
- 11:51Speaker 1: popping off at the moment, given I'm fueling the fire
- 11:54Speaker 1: a bit. Someone in there made a good point, though,
- 11:56Speaker 1: about me doxing myself. I guess I have and do sometimes,
- 12:00Speaker 1: so I'll get better at that. Doxing oneself is not recommended,
- 12:03Speaker 1: opens me up to harassment and the like, and creeps
- 12:06Speaker 1: like this last below and those on tattle wanting to
- 12:08Speaker 1: know all about your life. Anyway, want to know this
- 12:11Speaker 1: lady's name.
- 12:13Speaker 2: In terms of Ash's comments about doxing herself, Does she
- 12:16Speaker 2: mean that she's doxed herself to her Tattle Life thread
- 12:20Speaker 2: and she's actually put up her hand and said, I
- 12:22Speaker 2: read it? Because a lot of influencers deny that they
- 12:24Speaker 2: even look at the threads and a lot of the
- 12:26Speaker 2: Tattle Life users are like, oh, we know you read
- 12:29Speaker 2: your thread and it kind of spurs them on to
- 12:30Speaker 2: say worse things.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think because I had a look at the thread
- 12:33Speaker 1: and what people were more saying is that because she
- 12:35Speaker 1: chooses to put herself and her life out there like
- 12:38Speaker 1: that and share so much, she's doxing herself in the
- 12:41Speaker 1: sense of she's inviting negative commentary and harassment and It
- 12:45Speaker 1: is an interesting concept. Anyway, what I found really interesting
- 12:49Speaker 1: about what Ash said there is the fact that she
- 12:51Speaker 1: was alluding that she was going to share the woman's name.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I want to point out that Pepeop claims that the
- 12:57Speaker 1: photo is not of her. So she wrote on the forum,
- 13:00Speaker 1: yo Ash, you got it wrong. That photo is not me.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I hope this lady sues your ass. Now, that's what
- 13:08Speaker 1: she's claiming. From seeing both of the photos.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Of course you're going to say that.
- 13:12Speaker 1: It's pretty clear that it is the woman picture.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But that was my first thought. Like what if the
- 13:16Speaker 2: photo was taken at another point during the auction?
- 13:19Speaker 1: No, I've seen both photos and it is very clear
- 13:22Speaker 1: because it was right as the auction was taking place.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Did the woman have her iPad out or was it
- 13:27Speaker 2: a phone?
- 13:27Speaker 1: She had a phone out and it looked like she
- 13:29Speaker 1: was either filming or taking notes about what the different
- 13:32Speaker 1: prices were.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Well, of course, when you get caught out, you're going
- 13:35Speaker 2: to be like, oh, that's not me. It really is
- 13:37Speaker 2: one thing to have a bit of a whinge about
- 13:38Speaker 2: influences to your friends. Then the next step is joining
- 13:42Speaker 2: somewhere like Tattle.
- 13:43Speaker 4: What is this?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Like this is going too far. People rocking up to auctions.
- 13:47Speaker 2: It is next level. Almost acting as like citizen reporters.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Well, I mean, it was pretty game to do so
- 13:52Speaker 1: because at house inspections and auctions, generally you have to
- 13:55Speaker 1: give the real estate agent your name in order to
- 13:58Speaker 1: go through the house. So I'm guessing that Ash has
- 14:01Speaker 1: gotten this woman's name from the agent. I want to
- 14:04Speaker 1: point out that she has refrained from sharing the woman's name.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I think that she was just trying to scare her
- 14:09Speaker 1: and she probably– knew that if she did share these details,
- 14:12Speaker 1: she would actually be doxing the woman.
- 14:14Speaker 2: You can drop a fake name, though. It's not like
- 14:16Speaker 2: they check your driver's license or anything. Yeah, true. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 2: that's true. But, I mean, she's like, it's Pepeop. And
- 14:23Speaker 2: we've got to remember that this house sold for $ 2. 9 million,
- 14:26Speaker 2: so it's not just your typical– normal house that you're
- 14:29Speaker 2: looking through. I feel like when you look at a
- 14:32Speaker 2: luxury home like that, there might be more information you
- 14:34Speaker 2: need to provide. She might have just rocked up for
- 14:36Speaker 2: the auction though, not necessarily gone through it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: No, she did go through it. So I will get
- 14:41Speaker 1: into that later. But before I do, I was really
- 14:44Speaker 1: interested to see the types of comments that Pepiop was
- 14:47Speaker 1: sharing about Asha in the lead up to this auction,
- 14:49Speaker 1: because she clearly got under Asha's skin for her to
- 14:53Speaker 1: share about it. Now, Pepeop has been a regular poster
- 14:56Speaker 1: in Ash's thread. She seems to be very invested in
- 14:59Speaker 1: her life. And a lot of the comments she has
- 15:02Speaker 1: been making are incredibly cruel. There were countless posts where
- 15:05Speaker 1: she tore into Ash's appearance, particularly her hair. And she
- 15:09Speaker 1: also made a lot of nasty comments about Ash's daughter,
- 15:12Speaker 1: I am not going to read out these posts because
- 15:14Speaker 1: I don't really want to give them the airtime.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean, I just find it revolting for an adult
- 15:19Speaker 2: to be on a forum commenting on a child's appearance.
- 15:22Speaker 2: It just blows my mind that you would go that low.
- 15:26Speaker 2: And I can kind of see why Ash Pollard got
- 15:28Speaker 2: to the point where she's like, I'm going to call
- 15:29Speaker 2: this bullshit out. The whole thing's creepy, though, that she's
- 15:32Speaker 2: now been in Ash's house because she was also making
- 15:35Speaker 2: comments about hypothesizing where Ash was going to move to.
- 15:39Speaker 2: So she shared several listings from realestate.com and was questioning
- 15:43Speaker 2: whether these homes were her new residence. She also wrote
- 15:46Speaker 2: on the forum, found the new place. She's pretty dumb.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Didn't take chat GPT long to find it. Remember the
- 15:52Speaker 2: pool fiasco in Japan? Let's hope these stupid parents properly
- 15:55Speaker 2: supervise their pram riding toddlers around the pool in the
- 15:58Speaker 2: new place. Now, on the day of the auction, Peppy
- 16:01Speaker 2: Op shared a post saying that she'd do a report
- 16:04Speaker 2: about the property once she was home. I wonder if
- 16:06Speaker 2: that means she was brazen enough to log into Tattle
- 16:09Speaker 2: Life and do a little update from inside Ash's house.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I mean, how fucked is that?
- 16:13Speaker 1: Yeah, well, she stuck to her word and she sent
- 16:15Speaker 1: through her analysis of the property. So she wrote, okay,
- 16:18Speaker 1: went to the auction. Overall, the garden was lush and lovely.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Didn't care for the kitchen. Cupboards are a bit scuffed
- 16:24Speaker 1: and the brief to the designer was let's use as
- 16:27Speaker 1: many textures and different materials as possible. Metal clad breakfast bar, wood,
- 16:32Speaker 1: two pack marble and tile. The kitchen stools were rank,
- 16:35Speaker 1: the dining chair and lounge covers were stained and poorly fitted.
- 16:38Speaker 1: A passive aggressive note on the cubby house said it
- 16:41Speaker 1: was not included in the sale. The backyard was tiny,
- 16:44Speaker 1: like two to three steps to the back fence. Definitely
- 16:47Speaker 1: the camera makes everything look bigger. It was small in capitals.
- 16:51Speaker 1: One of the girl's bedrooms had a queen-size bed, so
- 16:53Speaker 1: literally no room for the kid to play on her
- 16:55Speaker 1: bedroom floor at all. It just went on and on.
- 16:58Speaker 1: She then criticized the clothesline area, saying it was teeny tiny.
- 17:02Speaker 1: She seemed really focused on the kitchen, trying to point
- 17:04Speaker 1: out that it was dirty.
- 17:05Speaker 2: She said, This just reminds me of when you go
- 17:16Speaker 2: for a walk in a really rich area and you
- 17:18Speaker 2: start to criticize all of these homes that you can't afford. Like,
- 17:20Speaker 2: why would they do that? Why would they? Like, this
- 17:22Speaker 2: is a $ 2. 9 million house. It's obviously nice. Clearly, this
- 17:27Speaker 2: woman came to pick it apart. I mean, that's why
- 17:29Speaker 2: she brought her iPad and took notes. I mean, it's
- 17:32Speaker 2: all very sad.
- 17:33Speaker 1: She's pretty much outed herself in the review of this
- 17:35Speaker 1: property too, because she said, I got the impression neighbors
- 17:38Speaker 1: don't like her. So, I mean, she was standing next
- 17:41Speaker 1: to the neighbors in the photo.
- 17:43Speaker 2: It's clear that this is her. The whole thing's just embarrassing.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I can kind of see why Ash has called her
- 17:49Speaker 2: out because you'd be like, wait a sec, this fucking
- 17:52Speaker 2: person is obsessed with me. They've come to the, like,
- 17:55Speaker 2: this is where her kids live. I mean, it's one
- 17:57Speaker 2: thing to dislike someone on the internet, but I think
- 17:59Speaker 2: this is taking it way too far.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I can see why she was driven to expose this person.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You would feel like your whole privacy had been invaded.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And I think she was feeling particularly vulnerable because Her
- 18:09Speaker 1: home has been targeted twice before by robbers. So in April,
- 18:14Speaker 1: thieves stole her husband's ute. And also last August, the
- 18:17Speaker 1: couple's cars were targeted again.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Now, as expected, the tattle users in Ash's thread got
- 18:24Speaker 2: on the defensive. So one user wrote, she has absolutely
- 18:27Speaker 2: no right to identify a person who is in the
- 18:29Speaker 2: crowd at an auction standing on a public street. Give
- 18:32Speaker 2: it your best shot, Ash. I want to point out
- 18:34Speaker 2: that that is actually factually incorrect. You can actually photograph
- 18:38Speaker 2: anyone that is in public and disseminate that image. Now,
- 18:42Speaker 2: another person wrote, hmm, she will want to tread carefully.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Doxing is illegal and that could be literally anyone. Another
- 18:49Speaker 2: said there is absolutely no proof that that person is
- 18:51Speaker 2: a tattle user and misidentifying someone can be a huge
- 18:54Speaker 2: breach of the law. That person and anyone else there
- 18:57Speaker 2: were doing nothing wrong by attending a public event. She
- 19:00Speaker 2: even said herself there was a lot of interest in
- 19:02Speaker 2: nosy people. What does unmasking a possible genuine interested buyer
- 19:06Speaker 2: achieve for Ash except legal ramifications if her goal is
- 19:09Speaker 2: inciting harassment?
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's a bit rich about them being concerned
- 19:12Speaker 1: about Ash inciting harassment when they're literally sitting on a
- 19:15Speaker 1: forum directing hate at one person. I mean, one Tattle
- 19:19Speaker 1: user even urged the members to report Ash to the
- 19:23Speaker 1: eSafety Commission if she ended up sharing the anonymous user's name.
- 19:27Speaker 1: They are the ones who should be reported to the
- 19:29Speaker 1: eSafety Commission. It is just so wildly hypocritical. Moana Hope
- 19:39Speaker 1: has opened up about an Instagram mishap that led to
- 19:42Speaker 1: her receiving shocking homophobic abuse from a former fellow AFLW player.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Before we get into the incident, Kate, can you get...
- 19:49Speaker 1: listeners up to speed with who Moana is?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Well, she's best known as being a trailblazer in the AFLW.
- 19:56Speaker 2: She played 20 games for Collingwood and North Melbourne between
- 19:59Speaker 2: 2017 and 2019. And following her football career, she appeared
- 20:03Speaker 2: on Australian Survivor twice. So once in 2018 and then
- 20:07Speaker 2: in the All-Stars version in 2020, where she finished third. Now,
- 20:11Speaker 2: during her time in the spotlight, she's gained 115,000 Instagram followers.
- 20:16Speaker 2: And these days she works in the sports media and
- 20:18Speaker 2: advocacy space. She's particularly passionate about inclusion, equality, and mental health.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Now, in terms of her personal life, Moana was married
- 20:27Speaker 1: to Isabel Karstrom, who she shares two children with. The
- 20:31Speaker 1: couple announced their separation in 2023, saying they were unconsciously uncoupling.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Neither have spoken publicly about the breakup. Moana says she
- 20:40Speaker 1: will never reveal why her marriage broke down out of
- 20:43Speaker 1: respect for her children and their family.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And I think that gives you an idea of what
- 20:47Speaker 2: type of person Moana is. She is very respected online
- 20:51Speaker 2: and very much liked.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Now, let's get.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Into the incident that kicked off last week. So it
- 20:56Speaker 2: all started when Moana posted an innocuous workout selfie on
- 21:00Speaker 2: her Instagram story. A few hours later, she then received
- 21:04Speaker 2: a direct message from a former AFLW player who is straight.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Now instantly Moana knew the message was intended for someone
- 21:12Speaker 2: else as it was her own gym selfie with a
- 21:15Speaker 2: homophobic slur added to it. Fortunately Moana managed to screenshot
- 21:19Speaker 2: the message before the sender quickly deleted it. She ended
- 21:23Speaker 2: up replying to the footballer writing whatever you're dealing with
- 21:26Speaker 2: and whatever hurt has caused you to be so mean
- 21:28Speaker 2: and a bully is not welcome here. You don't even
- 21:31Speaker 2: follow me and I hope you find your peace. She
- 21:34Speaker 2: then blocked the AFLW player.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Now, she ended up posting her gym selfie to her
- 21:39Speaker 1: Instagram feed along with a caption condemning the harassment she received.
- 21:43Speaker 1: She wrote, I didn't think homophobia had a place in AFLW,
- 21:47Speaker 1: but apparently I was wrong. A player and someone who
- 21:50Speaker 1: was connected to a Victorian AFLW club thought it was
- 21:53Speaker 1: appropriate to share this photo with a homophobic caption and
- 21:57Speaker 1: laughing emojis. So in light of that behavior, I figured
- 22:00Speaker 1: I'd put it on my grid myself.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Now, the following day, Moana said that she had given
- 22:04Speaker 2: the footballer an ultimatum. She said if she didn't report
- 22:08Speaker 2: herself to the football club she was affiliated with by Friday,
- 22:11Speaker 2: Moana would make her identity known. Now, later that day,
- 22:15Speaker 2: Moana told her Instagram followers that she had discovered the
- 22:18Speaker 2: woman had actually played alongside her in the AFLW football
- 22:21Speaker 2: But like Mo, she is now retired. Now, based on
- 22:24Speaker 2: that information, Mo ended up removing the reference to the
- 22:27Speaker 2: AFLW in the caption of her post, as she said
- 22:30Speaker 2: that they shouldn't be accountable for a retired player's actions.
- 22:34Speaker 1: It was at this point that Moana opened up further
- 22:36Speaker 1: about the homophobic slur that she received. Sadly, she explained
- 22:40Speaker 1: that she's become good at blocking out homophobic and sexist
- 22:42Speaker 1: sledges that she receives about being a gay woman who
- 22:45Speaker 1: plays AFLW. Let's take a listen to what she said.
- 22:50Speaker 5: But the two things people would come at me for
- 22:52Speaker 5: was the fact that, one, I'm a woman. So it
- 22:54Speaker 5: was always about get back in the kitchen. You need
- 22:58Speaker 5: to get a penis in you. You need to retract
- 23:05Speaker 5: back to the woman's role, and that's not footy.
- 23:09Speaker 2: That's one.
- 23:10Speaker 5: And the other thing is everything and nothing has got
- 23:14Speaker 5: to be with me being a lesbian, with me loving women,
- 23:18Speaker 5: with me having loved women. And having been with women
- 23:21Speaker 5: and me having brought kids into this world as a
- 23:23Speaker 5: gay woman, that said to me, every single day would
- 23:28Speaker 5: blow your fucking mind.
- 23:30Speaker 2: I found that really hard to listen to. It upsets
- 23:32Speaker 2: me so much that Mo has to deal with that
- 23:34Speaker 2: on a daily basis. It really, I feel like this
- 23:37Speaker 2: episode is just us getting angry, but it really frustrates me.
- 23:42Speaker 2: how small-minded people are. I mean, the fact that people
- 23:46Speaker 2: think that they can say that to someone is so wrong.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Moana pointed out that 99 times out of 100, those
- 23:52Speaker 2: comments come from men, which is why she was so
- 23:55Speaker 2: taken aback to receive the recent comment from a woman,
- 23:58Speaker 2: particularly someone in the same field as her. Now, in
- 24:01Speaker 2: terms of the message she received, the footballer said that
- 24:03Speaker 2: Mo should undergo facial feminization surgery, often referred.
- 24:07Speaker 1: To as FFS.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Now, Mo said she's received this comment from men in
- 24:12Speaker 2: the past, but it's actually the first time a woman
- 24:14Speaker 2: has said it to her. For those not familiar with FFS,
- 24:18Speaker 2: it's a type of gender affirming surgery that involves changing
- 24:22Speaker 2: facial features to create a more traditionally feminine appearance. It's
- 24:27Speaker 2: most commonly undertaken by transgender women or gender diverse people
- 24:31Speaker 2: as part of their transition. Let's take a listen to
- 24:34Speaker 2: more of what Mo said about the comment.
- 24:37Speaker 5: I'll tell you how it's been said to me in
- 24:38Speaker 5: the past. People use it in terms of, you're another
- 24:44Speaker 5: d * * k. You need to go get FFS done.
- 24:50Speaker 5: You just want to be a man. You're disgusting.
- 24:52Speaker 2: You need FFS.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Go get FFS. It's the only thing that's going to
- 24:55Speaker 5: help you.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I mean, again, I'm just speechless that Mo has to
- 24:59Speaker 2: deal with this. It's just so wrong. She did go
- 25:03Speaker 2: on to say that she supports anyone who decides that
- 25:05Speaker 2: that surgery is what they want to do. But she
- 25:08Speaker 2: said when she's constantly told she needs it because she
- 25:10Speaker 2: doesn't meet beauty standards because she's not feminine enough, it's
- 25:13Speaker 2: a different story, which I completely agree with.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Now, the plot thickens because Moana returned to Instagram with
- 25:19Speaker 1: a fresh update for her followers. She revealed that she
- 25:22Speaker 1: had received a DM from a barista from a coffee
- 25:25Speaker 1: shop in North Melbourne who claimed they overheard an influencer
- 25:28Speaker 1: who was part of the LGBTQI community call Mo a
- 25:32Speaker 1: clout chaser. Let's take a listen.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Apparently, she spent her time standing there absolutely getting me
- 25:42Speaker 4: and saying that I'm doing all of this for clout.
- 25:46Speaker 4: And the person on the phone was just as bad
- 25:50Speaker 4: at saying really hurtful things about me. Really hurtful is
- 25:53Speaker 4: what this person said in the message, which I will share. However,
- 25:57Speaker 4: I have given this woman... right of reply. I've sent
- 26:01Speaker 4: her the screenshot. So I mean, you get right of
- 26:04Speaker 4: reply here. So I'm not going to share who this
- 26:06Speaker 4: person is.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Now, Moana came with the receipt. She shared the screenshot
- 26:10Speaker 2: of the DM she received from the barista with the
- 26:13Speaker 2: influencer in question's name blacked out. She then said this.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Like I get, right, because I see it all the time.
- 26:20Speaker 4: I get that influencers and people, they just are so,
- 26:23Speaker 4: so desperate to be famous that they say dumb. They
- 26:27Speaker 4: say they don't believe in just to get attention. They
- 26:29Speaker 4: say controversial things to get attention. Even to the point
- 26:34Speaker 4: where I feel like you're dating people just to get attention.
- 26:38Speaker 4: If you know me, which almost all of my followers do,
- 26:43Speaker 4: I am the last person to ask for attention. If
- 26:46Speaker 4: I wanted attention, I would start by talking about my divorce,
- 26:50Speaker 4: which I never publicly spoke about the reason. I would
- 26:54Speaker 4: talk about breaking up with people in my life, I
- 26:57Speaker 4: would talk about the fact that I spent my entire
- 26:58Speaker 4: fucking childhood being tortured as a child in a house
- 27:02Speaker 4: full of domestic violence in which I was beaten black
- 27:05Speaker 4: and blue because you know what? Having those conversations would
- 27:08Speaker 4: gain attraction, would get me followers, but I don't want
- 27:10Speaker 4: to have them because I don't need to because I
- 27:12Speaker 4: work through my shit and I don't make my shit
- 27:14Speaker 4: public to get a follower or two.
- 27:17Speaker 2: That was absolutely iconic. I feel like within that rant,
- 27:20Speaker 2: she dropped some more clues as to who the influencer
- 27:22Speaker 2: may be. There is a prominent influencer who fits the description.
- 27:27Speaker 2: For legal reasons, we can't, of course, comment on who
- 27:30Speaker 2: we think that is.
- 27:32Speaker 1: There is a lot of speculation currently as to who
- 27:34Speaker 1: this could be.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I was wondering if the person who a lot of
- 27:39Speaker 2: people have been speculating that it is might actually put
- 27:42Speaker 2: something out and say, hey, it's not me, guys. I 100%
- 27:44Speaker 2: support Moana, but The person that a lot of people
- 27:48Speaker 2: think it is hasn't said anything. I mean, that could
- 27:51Speaker 2: be because it's not them and they don't want to
- 27:53Speaker 2: weigh into it.
- 27:54Speaker 1: So you're saying that this influencer, if they didn't do it,
- 27:56Speaker 1: they probably would have tried to clear the air by
- 27:58Speaker 1: putting up a post saying, I support Moana, this was
- 28:01Speaker 1: not me. And they haven't actually done that yet, which
- 28:03Speaker 1: makes things even more suspicious.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Yeah, particularly because they have been named online as the
- 28:08Speaker 2: person who did it, which I mean, again, is really
- 28:10Speaker 2: unfair if this person hasn't done it. But yeah, I
- 28:13Speaker 2: would have thought they would come out swinging and say,
- 28:15Speaker 2: hey guys, this is not me. I 100% support what
- 28:19Speaker 2: Moana is saying.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Particularly because these two people would know each other. They
- 28:24Speaker 1: do move in the same circles. Now, by Wednesday, Moana
- 28:27Speaker 1: said it was the last time she was going to
- 28:29Speaker 1: comment on the situation. She said she'd received thousands of
- 28:32Speaker 1: messages asking for her to name and shame the retired footballer,
- 28:36Speaker 1: but she wouldn't be doing that because she didn't want
- 28:38Speaker 1: to cause the woman harm. Instead, she urged her followers
- 28:41Speaker 1: to kill hate with love and support those who are
- 28:44Speaker 1: judged and discriminated against for who they are or what
- 28:47Speaker 1: they do. I mean, again, we probably should be focusing
- 28:50Speaker 1: more so on who is the footballer who has made
- 28:53Speaker 1: these foul comments as opposed to perhaps the clout chasing comments.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Sadly though, this situation Mo experienced isn't an isolated one.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It really ties into a wider issue in female sport
- 29:04Speaker 1: because women who don't fit narrow stereotypes about femininity are
- 29:09Speaker 1: often targeted with comments about their bodies or their question
- 29:12Speaker 1: about their gender or sexuality. And often this abuse is
- 29:15Speaker 1: disguised as banter. I mean, we saw it earlier this
- 29:18Speaker 1: month when an official from a local league stepped down
- 29:21Speaker 1: after being caught saying a female player should lose weight
- 29:24Speaker 1: and described women as breeders. And this comment Mo received
- 29:27Speaker 1: is particularly troubling considering it came from an AFLW player.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I mean, so many players in the AFLW are a
- 29:35Speaker 1: part of the LGBTQI community.
- 29:37Speaker 2: So the fact that it's coming from one of their
- 29:39Speaker 2: own is so sad.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I think there could be more to come with this story,
- 29:44Speaker 1: particularly if the two offenders are revealed. I mean, I
- 29:49Speaker 1: don't think they've really got much of a leg to
- 29:50Speaker 1: stand on if their identities do become public. The one
- 29:53Speaker 1: positive thing to come out of this is I have
- 29:56Speaker 1: heard people speak about Moana Hope before, but I've never
- 29:59Speaker 1: actually followed her page. And I'm so glad I've come
- 30:01Speaker 1: across her because she is such an amazing role model
- 30:05Speaker 1: for women. And I'm so grateful that she took the
- 30:08Speaker 1: time to call out this disgusting behavior because it would
- 30:10Speaker 1: have taken a lot to put yourself out there and
- 30:13Speaker 1: call this out and then have to cop more abuse. Well,
- 30:16Speaker 1: that is all we have time for today. Thank you
- 30:18Speaker 1: so much for joining us for this episode. If you
