- 0:00KARA: I wanted to talk about the Nyle DiMarco video you
- 0:02sent me.
- 0:02DANI: Oh my god, yeah.
- 0:02KARA: So, it's graduation
- 0:05season. Nyle DiMarco was the commencement speaker
- 0:08for Gallaudet. Yeah. And I guess the gist of
- 0:12the commencement speech was, you know, he was
- 0:14a former student and that Gallaudet gave him
- 0:17the tools to be an adaptable person as a Deaf
- 0:20man in the hearing world. And he kind of just
- 0:24talks about his whole life experience and his
- 0:26work experience. And the first one being, I think
- 0:29his first acting gig was Switched at Birth.
- 0:29DANI: Yeah.
- 0:32KARA: So he flies out to LA. I know.
- 0:32DANI: Sorry, Lenny's
- 0:35licking Kara's foot.
- 0:35KARA: And she won't stop, even
- 0:37though I explicitly told her.
- 0:37DANI: I'm sorry.
- 0:37KARA: It's
- 0:40fine.
- 0:40DANI: She doesn't really understand about consent.
- 0:42KARA: I know.
- 0:42DANI: Also, guys, the windows are open because
- 0:45it is 91 degrees today. So if you're catching
- 0:48outside noise, we're sorry. But we have to put
- 0:52ourselves first.
- 0:52KARA: It's true.
- 0:52DANI: And Lenny has to
- 0:54put herself first.
- 0:54KARA: She has to lick my toes.
- 0:54DANI: Yeah,
- 0:57she's got to lick them.
- 0:57KARA: I'm just accepting my
- 0:59fate at this point.
- 0:59DANI: The dog mouth sounds on mic
- 1:03is a bit much. Sorry, girl. Anyway.
- 1:03KARA: Nyle DiMarco's
- 1:07first gig, I believe, was Switched at Birth.
- 1:07DANI: That
- 1:10is the way he presented it in the speech.
- 1:10KARA: He
- 1:13flies out to LA and he - I don't remember
- 1:16this episode. It's been a long time, but he was
- 1:18Bay's love interest.
- 1:18DANI: He's in it for like two
- 1:21seconds.
- 1:21KARA: Yeah, two.
- 1:21DANI: And I remember watching it,
- 1:24I think maybe the way the cycle of TV came out,
- 1:28or maybe I was watching it on a delay, so I really
- 1:31don't know. But I feel like I recognized him
- 1:33from America's Next Top Model when he was
- 1:37on Switched at Birth, when I saw Switched
- 1:39at Birth. So I didn't realize that Switched at
- 1:40Birth had happened first for him.
- 1:40KARA: I think he
- 1:43was like an influencer online first. He was like
- 1:46a YouTuber.
- 1:46DANI: So maybe I recognized him from that?
- 1:49KARA: I don't know. I just like always knew about him.
- 1:52Since I was in maybe high school.
- 1:52DANI: Yeah.
- 1:52KARA: Just
- 1:55from online.
- 1:55DANI: He's extremely hot.
- 1:55KARA: He's a beautiful
- 1:58man.
- 1:58DANI: If you don't know, Nyle DiMarco is like
- 2:01the human male embodiment of a husky.
- 2:01KARA: Yeah.
- 2:01DANI: Like
- 2:06he has beautiful striking eyes.
- 2:06KARA: Blue eyes.
- 2:06DANI: And
- 2:10just like.
- 2:10KARA: He has salt and pepper hair now, which
- 2:12is really nice. It really suits him.
- 2:12DANI: Yeah,
- 2:13it really suits him. Just like gorgeous. Gorgeous
- 2:16man.
- 2:16KARA: Gorgeous man. Nice beard.
- 2:16DANI: Yes.
- 2:16KARA: Or short
- 2:18beard. Anyway, he's on the Switched at Birth set.
- 2:21He's looking around and he's like, wait, everyone
- 2:24in this room is hearing, including the ASL master.
- 2:29DANI: Yeah.
- 2:29KARA: And he does say that he was hoping to get
- 2:33like a longer role and be in more episodes for
- 2:36Switched at Birth and it kind of seemed like it was
- 2:39just a one-off thing.
- 2:39DANI: Yeah.
- 2:39KARA: He was in this one
- 2:41episode and one episode only.
- 2:41DANI: It was always going
- 2:44to be one episode, but there was potential for
- 2:46him and Bay to be spun off into true love interests,
- 2:50which I would have loved to have seen.
- 2:50KARA: Right.
- 2:52DANI: So that's really tragic. And that, yeah, that
- 2:54he found his experience on set to be frustrating
- 2:58because he specifically wanted to ask questions
- 3:01about language.
- 3:01KARA: Yeah, he was saying, well, Vanessa
- 3:05Marano's character, Bay, is new to sign so should
- 3:08I sign fluently or should I slow down my signing
- 3:11to make it more accessible for Bay?
- 3:11DANI: Yes.
- 3:11KARA: And then,
- 3:15it seems like the writers and the ASL instructors
- 3:18were kind of wishy-washy and they'll kind of
- 3:21DANI: Yeah.
- 3:21KARA: I think they said do whatever you want.
- 3:21DANI: It
- 3:23was like well I don't know ASL so that's not
- 3:25a question for me and then he went to the ASL
- 3:27master who was hearing. He noted that he was under
- 3:31the impression that the ASL master was Deaf before
- 3:34he got on the set.
- 3:34KARA: I thought the ASL master was
- 3:38Deaf also. I thought it was Cameron,
- 3:40Emmett Bledsoe, his father.
- 3:40DANI: This is season three.
- 3:40KARA: Oh,
- 3:44it's later.
- 3:44DANI: So maybe they got -
- 3:44KARA: Maybe he left.
- 3:44DANI: Yeah.
- 3:47Yeah we don't really know all the details yet
- 3:49because we haven't reached that season yet. it
- 3:53might even be season two. but anyway it's
- 3:55beyond what we've really done research about
- 3:57but I feel like from what I've heard of the
- 4:01show, too, the signing gets worse.
- 4:01KARA: Ooh.
- 4:01DANI: So maybe
- 4:06they did switch to a hearing ASL master.
- 4:06KARA: Okay,
- 4:09good to know.
- 4:09DANI: I mean, maybe. They clearly did,
- 4:11because I believe Nyle's story like his experience
- 4:15of what happened but I'm interested to know like
- 4:18what went down there.
- 4:18KARA: I know.
- 4:18DANI: and so then the ASL
- 4:21master was like, well no because it's for TV, just
- 4:24like sign it full out the way you would but Nyle
- 4:26was like, but I wouldn't sign it that way because
- 4:28Bay doesn't know ASL that fluently still. so.
- 4:28KARA: yeah
- 4:33he was asking smart questions about his acting
- 4:37role and they were just like whatever you're
- 4:39the Deaf guy so just sign and he was like all
- 4:41right and then he is notices - he looks around
- 4:45the room he's like all these people are hearing
- 4:47and they're writing stories about people like
- 4:50me and they're controlling the narrative for
- 4:52people like me.
- 4:52DANI: yeah.
- 4:52KARA: and then you know it's a
- 4:55commencement speech so it's supposed to be inspirational
- 4:57and he's telling all these Deaf students at Gallaudet
- 5:00like you have the ability to adapt and also, you
- 5:05know, make your own seat at the table so it's
- 5:08not all hearing people making the big decisions.
- 5:10DANI: yeah.
- 5:10KARA: but then he created Deaf U on Netflix.
- 5:15It's a reality TV show on Netflix and it's college
- 5:18students at Gallaudet. It's a shame it wasn't
- 5:20renewed, but yeah, I think it showed a lot, especially
- 5:24about, I remember one of the things they talked
- 5:26about was the hierarchy of deafness at Gallaudet.
- 5:30Like people who are born Deaf in a Deaf family
- 5:33tend to be like Deaf elites compared to, you
- 5:37know, people like me who have cochlear implants
- 5:39and also speak English, you know?
- 5:39DANI: Yeah.
- 5:39KARA: So that
- 5:42was interesting to see represented. And then,
- 5:45yeah, one of the things he was talking about
- 5:47was like, I had the power to, you know make
- 5:51it a set where I could hire the very first Deaf
- 5:53producer and the very first Deaf cinematographer
- 5:55and create these very one-of-a-kind roles.
- 5:58And then he also directed Deaf President Now,
- 6:01and he has his own production studio.
- 6:01DANI: Very cool,
- 6:03Nyle.
- 6:03KARA: Yeah.
- 6:03DANI: And sorry about his experience.
- 6:06KARA: Yeah, sorry about that. I mean, am I surprised?
- 6:09Not really.
- 6:09DANI: No, me either. I was like, I would
- 6:12like to hear more. He's more famous than everyone
- 6:16on that show, except for Melody, Marlee Matlin,
- 6:19obviously.
- 6:19KARA: And she's back this episode. Thank
- 6:21God.
- 6:21DANI: Thank God. Okay, should we get into it?
- 6:24KARA: Let's do it. [UPBEAT JAZZY THEME MUSIC]. Season 1, Episode 25, The Shock
- 6:40of Being Seen. September 17, 2012. I could not
- 6:45find this art anywhere online.
- 6:45DANI: I'm looking on
- 6:48Reddit right now.
- 6:48KARA: The art is by Gor Sudan. I
- 6:51believe he's from Kenya. And I clicked on many
- 6:55links to this piece of art. And it was taken
- 6:58down. Maybe it was a copyright issue or something?
- 7:00But I could not find this art anywhere.
- 7:00DANI: Sorry,
- 7:04guys. See if you can find it.
- 7:04KARA: Yeah. If you can
- 7:06find it, that'd be great. And we can post it.
- 7:08But just use your imagination.
- 7:08DANI: Okay.
- 7:08KARA: Every time
- 7:11I Googled The Shock of Being Seen, they're like,
- 7:13do you mean The Scream? And I'm like, no.
- 7:13DANI: Interesting.
- 7:16What if the art piece is, like, non-existent?
- 7:20And it's a rumor that he started.
- 7:20KARA: That'd be awesome.
- 7:22DANI: That'd be really - like the art is that it doesn't
- 7:24exist. But the thing is shock of being seen and
- 7:26no one can see it.
- 7:26KARA: That's so meta.
- 7:26DANI: That would
- 7:29be good. I hope that's what it is. I don't think
- 7:31so.
- 7:31KARA: It's because the AV Club covered every episode
- 7:36of Switched at Birth and they did a review. So
- 7:38I went on the AV Club.
- 7:38DANI: Bring that back. I guess
- 7:40we're bringing that back.
- 7:40KARA: Yeah. We're the AV
- 7:42Club really. But I went on the AV Club website
- 7:45and they linked the art and they were like the
- 7:47art is so cool.
- 7:47DANI: Oh, and it's not there?
- 7:47KARA: And then
- 7:50you notice that error 404. And I was like, ugh.
- 7:53DANI: Oh, my God. Okay. Maybe I'll go on a journey
- 7:56myself and try to find it.
- 7:56KARA: Yeah, it's really
- 7:59frustrating.
- 7:59DANI: But if anyone wants to take it upon
- 8:01themselves and then send it to us via email,
- 8:03we would love that.
- 8:03KARA: Please do.
- 8:03DANI: Dishedatbirth@gmail
- 8:06.com.
- 8:06KARA: Yes. Bay is in the junkyard. It's nighttime.
- 8:10She is answering Zarra's piece with the empty
- 8:14frame on the school bus. But she hears some chattering.
- 8:17And she decides to follow it. And she sees Zarra
- 8:20and other street artists doing art.
- 8:20DANI: Yeah. Doing
- 8:24their art.
- 8:24KARA: And then she's like, oh, my God. I
- 8:27have to be their friend. They're so cool.
- 8:27DANI: This
- 8:29was so after school special. I know that's what
- 8:32ABC Family essentially is.
- 8:32KARA: They're bad kids.
- 8:34DANI: But, like, they're laying it on thick.
- 8:34KARA: It's too
- 8:38much.
- 8:38DANI: It's so much.
- 8:38KARA: And the names they gave them,
- 8:42they're like, this is JT. This is 8-Ball.
- 8:42DANI: Isn't
- 8:44one of them Bulldog or something?
- 8:44KARA: I don't remember.
- 8:47I just remember 8-Ball.
- 8:47DANI: He's like 16 years old.
- 8:51KARA: I know. And then they look at Bay and they go,
- 8:53are you like a Brittany or a Courtney? And she
- 8:56goes, no, it's Bay. Bay Vasquez.
- 8:56DANI: She whipped
- 9:00out that Vasquez. She said, it's Vasquez, actually.
- 9:03KARA: Like Daphne, a couple episodes back.
- 9:03DANI: They only
- 9:06use it when it's convenient for them.
- 9:06KARA: Exactly.
- 9:08DANI: Yeah, and then Bay's like, I'd love to work with
- 9:11you guys. And they're like, whoa, whoa. We got
- 9:14to see your stuff first. She's like, well, it
- 9:16already worked with Zarra. Zarra? Is that her name?
- 9:19KARA: Yeah, Zarra.
- 9:19DANI: Okay, retail store.
- 9:19KARA: Z-A-R-R-A.
- 9:19DANI: Yeah.
- 9:22And Zarra's like, whoa, whoa, it's cool. Pulls
- 9:25her aside. And then once again, they have excellent
- 9:29chemistry.
- 9:29KARA: I know.
- 9:29DANI: They really should have pursued
- 9:32this. Whatever. And so she's like, I'll hit you
- 9:35up. We're pretty much finished here, but I'll
- 9:37hit you up. And then we're at the kitchen with
- 9:40Daphne.
- 9:40KARA: At the restaurant, yes.
- 9:40DANI: Fucking side
- 9:42braid is back.
- 9:42KARA: Yes. Scuba is there. They're preparing
- 9:47for, I guess, a bridal party the next day because
- 9:49there's a tray of very cute little mini cupcakes.
- 9:53And he takes one.
- 9:53DANI: He slanders them first and
- 9:56then takes one.
- 9:56KARA: And right in the center.
- 9:56DANI: Yeah.
- 9:59KARA: So it's very obvious that someone took a cupcake.
- 10:02So Daphne's going to have to rearrange the arrangement.
- 10:04DANI: I'm sure they're, like, putting them on little
- 10:06tiered cake holders or something.
- 10:06KARA: Anyways, Daphne
- 10:10takes the box of cupcakes and she brings it into
- 10:12the walk-in fridge, puts it on the shelf, and
- 10:15then the shelf collapses.
- 10:15DANI: Yeah.
- 10:15KARA: Everything's
- 10:17made of sticks.
- 10:17DANI: And she's freaking out, rightfully.
- 10:20And also, okay, so the cupcakes, like, get crumpled.
- 10:25Chef Jeff comes in. He's like, it's okay. I should
- 10:28have fixed that shelf. You just, like, had a
- 10:31broken shelf in the walkway.
- 10:31KARA: And you didn't warn
- 10:32anyone?
- 10:32DANI: And you didn't, like, put a little sign
- 10:34up or a little piece of caution tape? Nothing?
- 10:37Okay. He's so chill about it. So uncharacteristically
- 10:41chill about it. And also, Daphne looks at the
- 10:43cupcakes that I'm pretty sure. Okay, the other
- 10:46things on the shelf were, like, vegetables and
- 10:48shrimp and sauce. And the sauce goes everywhere.
- 10:52And it looks like the sauce gets on the cupcakes.
- 10:54KARA: It looks like the cupcakes are inedible now.
- 10:57DANI: Yeah. But she's like, I can fix it. I'm really
- 10:59good with a frosting piper. It's, like, it's
- 11:02beyond that.
- 11:02KARA: It's beyond fixed. Like, I thought
- 11:05Daphne was, is going to have to make a new
- 11:07batch. The cake of the cupcake is smushed.
- 11:07DANI: Not
- 11:11only smushed, but, like, saucy. There's shrimp
- 11:14sauce on them.
- 11:14KARA: I don't know.
- 11:14DANI: Like, I just.
- 11:17Shrimp is so pungent. There's no way. Even
- 11:20if it's just on the cardboard box on the outside,
- 11:22like, those cupcakes are ruined.
- 11:22KARA: I agree.
- 11:22DANI: And
- 11:25they're like, no, no, we're just gonna refrost
- 11:26them.
- 11:26KARA: And Chef Jeff says, I hope you don't have
- 11:28plans tonight.
- 11:28DANI: Skin crawling.
- 11:28KARA: Yeah. Now we're at
- 11:31the Kennish house at the home gym. I guess they
- 11:34have a home gym.
- 11:34DANI: Yeah, new Kennish location unlocked.
- 11:38KARA: Yeah. Which is just -
- 11:38DANI: Their home gym, which
- 11:40is -
- 11:40KARA: It's just John and Kathryn's bedroom,
- 11:42but they switched out the bed and put a treadmill
- 11:44in there.
- 11:44DANI: No, for sure. Not just a treadmill.
- 11:46There is so much workout equipment in there.
- 11:49There's like several machines. I know he's an
- 11:52athlete.
- 11:52KARA: It's impressive.
- 11:52DANI: But it's a little.
- 11:56KARA: And there's a TV and Angelo is running on the
- 11:58treadmill watching a marine life documentary.
- 12:01DANI: Yeah.
- 12:01KARA: John walks in and he's like, oh, wow, you're
- 12:04using the machine that I wanted to use.
- 12:04DANI: Angelo's
- 12:07like, I thought you worked out in the morning.
- 12:09And John is really bitter about it. He's like,
- 12:11sometimes. Sometimes I work out in the afternoon.
- 12:14That's sort of the privilege of having your own
- 12:15home gym, but whatever.
- 12:15KARA: Wipe everything down.
- 12:18DANI: Yeah.
- 12:18KARA: When you're done, please.
- 12:18DANI: Yeah. Clearly
- 12:20they're butting heads a little bit. I get it.
- 12:22I'm like John. I don't like when people are in
- 12:25my space.
- 12:25KARA: Again, he should not be in this house.
- 12:27He should be in the guest house.
- 12:27DANI: No, he should
- 12:28not. Just move Daphne.
- 12:28KARA: Just move Daphne.
- 12:28DANI: Daphne
- 12:30would be so happy in that house.
- 12:30KARA: As I was watching
- 12:32this, I was like, none of this would have happened
- 12:34if he was just in the guest house.
- 12:34DANI: No. And Daphne
- 12:38wouldn't care. She's not even there.
- 12:38KARA: No.
- 12:38DANI: She's
- 12:40working at the kitchen getting groomed every
- 12:42night. She does not care.
- 12:42KARA: Exactly.
- 12:42DANI: So, and then
- 12:46we switch to Emmett.
- 12:46KARA: He's watching the same
- 12:50movie.
- 12:50DANI: He's watching the same, but did you catch
- 12:52what was being said on the TV?
- 12:52KARA: No.
- 12:52DANI: Via the captions?
- 12:56So obviously he's watching with captions and
- 12:58the captions say, when the male shark feels threatened,
- 13:01he is prone to attack. So that's a nice little
- 13:06meta commentary. And Melody is back.
- 13:06KARA: Marlee Matlin
- 13:09is back.
- 13:09DANI: Thank God. They heard our cries.
- 13:09KARA: She's
- 13:13back from a date that didn't go too well.
- 13:13DANI: Yeah.
- 13:15KARA: The guy kept checking himself out on the kitchen
- 13:18knife.
- 13:18DANI: Yeah, and things seem pretty good between
- 13:21her and Emmett now. He makes a joke about, like,
- 13:23we're going to get four cats. It's fine.
- 13:23KARA: Yeah.
- 13:26DANI: They seem okay.
- 13:26KARA: Yeah, they seem good.
- 13:26DANI: They seem
- 13:28back to normal. He makes, like, a reference about
- 13:29that he's seeing his dad on select weekends still.
- 13:34KARA: Yeah, he's seeing his dad on select weekends.
- 13:37DANI: Which is how his dad should have always been
- 13:39parenting. Clearly not prepared to be a full
- 13:42-time parent.
- 13:42KARA: yeah. but they're good and I'm happy
- 13:44you see that.
- 13:44DANI: yeah and then that's all ruined
- 13:46by sexy cupcake time. inappropriate sexy cupcake
- 13:49time. so they're like, first of all we're about
- 13:53to learn that Chef Jeff went to MIT and I just
- 13:56feel that if he had gone to MIT, he should know
- 14:00how to frost a cupcake. But he is so shit at
- 14:02it. Like, he has an engineering degree. Figure
- 14:05it out.
- 14:05KARA: It's true.
- 14:05DANI: But he cannot do it. So Daphne
- 14:08is teaching him. It's like the pottery scene
- 14:12in Ghost, except it's cupcake frosting.
- 14:12KARA: With
- 14:14Demi Moore.
- 14:14DANI: Yeah. And then she makes a comment
- 14:18about the fact that she's a vegetarian.
- 14:18KARA: Yeah,
- 14:20he goes, you're really good at piping. Have you
- 14:22considered getting into pastry? And she's like,
- 14:25Well, baking's just easy for me because I'm vegetarian.
- 14:28And then he's like, ugh, that's worse than the
- 14:30Deaf thing.
- 14:30DANI: That is an exact quote.
- 14:30KARA: I hate this
- 14:33man. I hate this man.
- 14:33DANI: And we're supposed to find
- 14:36it cute. Daphne, like, finds that cute. She's
- 14:39like, ha ha.
- 14:39KARA: Also, again, she's not vegetarian.
- 14:42She eats fish. She eats salmon later.
- 14:42DANI: She's pescatarian.
- 14:46Guys, it does matter. The words do matter.
- 14:46KARA: I
- 14:49know.
- 14:49DANI: Because when I was vegetarian, the amount
- 14:52of times people would be like, but you eat fish,
- 14:54right? Because they don't understand.
- 14:54KARA: That is
- 14:57meat. Whatever.
- 14:57DANI: And it's just like when I say
- 14:59I don't eat red meat to people and they say,
- 15:01so you're vegetarian. And I say, no, not anymore.
- 15:04I eat chicken and turkey. Like I eat poultry.
- 15:07These words mean something.
- 15:07KARA: They do.
- 15:07DANI: Okay. Anyway.
- 15:11KARA: They just get into this very annoying discourse
- 15:13about meat-eating, something you've heard all
- 15:16the time.
- 15:16DANI: It's like, he goes so hard, though.
- 15:19He's like, that's terrible. Like, that's so whatever.
- 15:23And then Daphne goes even harder back. She's
- 15:25like, if they teach you to be this close-minded
- 15:28in culinary school, then I don't want to go.
- 15:30And he's like, well, actually, I went to MIT.
- 15:32And she's like, oh.
- 15:32KARA: Oh, I know MIT.
- 15:32DANI: And then
- 15:35I started feeling sick to my stomach. And then
- 15:38he's like, put some animal fat in your coffee.
- 15:41KARA: It's cream.
- 15:41DANI: It's whipped cream.
- 15:41KARA: It's whipped
- 15:44cream. And then she takes a sip of her coffee
- 15:46and she gets some cream on her lips. And then
- 15:49he goes, you have a little something.
- 15:49DANI: And they
- 15:52have like a cute moment. Mind you, the whole
- 15:55time, her hair is in a side braid.
- 15:55KARA: She is 16.
- 15:59DANI: That too. But almost more importantly, her hair
- 16:02is in a side braid.
- 16:02KARA: I know.
- 16:02DANI: That's too, it's,
- 16:06anyway.
- 16:06KARA: I know. They're really forcing it in
- 16:09Our face. They're like, you need to like Chef
- 16:11Jeff. He's cute and smart.
- 16:11DANI: Yeah, they're trying
- 16:12to make him so likable. Ugh. And then, okay,
- 16:15so then back at the Kennish house the next day,
- 16:18Angelo doesn't have a fucking job, so he's just
- 16:20loitering around the house all day.
- 16:20KARA: Yeah, he
- 16:22sees Toby strumming on the guitar outside. Inside
- 16:26the house, John and Kathryn are doing a separate
- 16:28thing. They're meeting with Craig Tebbe about the
- 16:30lawsuit.
- 16:30DANI: Also, Craig Tebbe's back.
- 16:30KARA: Yay!
- 16:30DANI: Well,
- 16:33kind of yay.
- 16:33KARA: Sort of yay.
- 16:33DANI: Yay for us. Sad for
- 16:36Kathryn.
- 16:36KARA: Yeah. Toby's like, hey, how's it going
- 16:40living here? And Angelo doesn't really answer.
- 16:42He says, he just says, it's nice of them to have
- 16:45me here.
- 16:45DANI: Yeah, I did. Okay. I'm no better than
- 16:49Regina. Cause like when he came in and was like.
- 16:51do you want a croissant? They gave me an extra
- 16:53one. In no way does the script imply this, but
- 16:56to me, I was like, I feel like he bought that
- 16:58croissant so that he could bond with someone
- 17:00else.
- 17:00KARA: He's always getting two pastries.
- 17:00DANI: He's
- 17:03always getting two of things and then being like,
- 17:05they gave me, I mean, I think what they're trying
- 17:07to say is like, Angelo is handsome and charming
- 17:09and he gets extra things. But I was just like,
- 17:12I feel bad that he feels so out of place, even
- 17:15though I shouldn't. It's not deserved at all.
- 17:18KARA: This episode, I did feel for him a little bit.
- 17:21DANI: Just, like, must be. There's truly nowhere for
- 17:23him to go. And the thing to do is, like, okay,
- 17:25get a job. But I don't know. Maybe he can't.
- 17:28KARA: Bay made you those beautiful business cards.
- 17:30DANI: Yeah. Do something. Do something productive.
- 17:34KARA: He asks Toby, you're great at guitar. Have you
- 17:37ever been in a band before? And Toby goes, yeah.
- 17:39But my bass player, Wilke, got shipped off to
- 17:42boarding school. And my drummer slept with my
- 17:43girlfriend. So I'm on my own right now.
- 17:43DANI: Tough.
- 17:46KARA: I'm kind of nowhere. And Angelo's like, I can
- 17:49also relate. I'm also nowhere.
- 17:49DANI: Yeah.
- 17:49KARA: So kind
- 17:52of bonding between them a little bit.
- 17:52DANI: But he's
- 17:54about to get a job, in a sense. The job is Father.
- 17:57KARA: The job is Father. Now we're inside the Kennish
- 18:00house, cutting to Craig Tebbe and John and
- 18:03Kathryn. They don't seem to have a lot of proof
- 18:05for this upcoming trial.
- 18:05DANI: That's not true. Their
- 18:09proof is their daughters were Switched at Birth.
- 18:12KARA: Which Kathryn says. She's like, we have DNA.
- 18:15DANI: Yeah, we have true evidence. But it is true
- 18:18that they have one crazy nurse.
- 18:18KARA: Yeah.
- 18:18DANI: And that's
- 18:21it.
- 18:21KARA: But then Angelo apparently has a source and
- 18:24he claims that it was an anonymous phone call
- 18:26tipping him off about a nurse.
- 18:26DANI: Which obviously
- 18:29is not true.
- 18:29KARA: No. But they don't know who it is.
- 18:32DANI: Yeah.
- 18:32KARA: John leaves the room because he gets a
- 18:35phone call. Wonder what that's about. And Craig
- 18:37Tebbe and Kathryn have this awkward moment
- 18:40because a couple episodes ago they had this...
- 18:44They had like a moment between them and then
- 18:46they almost kissed and then Kathryn pulled
- 18:48away.
- 18:48DANI: Yeah.
- 18:48KARA: This was the day they met the real
- 18:51antichrist lactation consultant.
- 18:51DANI: This was the
- 18:55day of the prom.
- 18:55KARA: Prom. Yes. Okay.
- 18:55DANI: Very dramatic
- 18:58episode.
- 18:58KARA: Yes. But she's like, so, um, hi, I'm
- 19:03going to go on a local talk show. That's fun.
- 19:06And they're going to interview Regina and I in
- 19:08front of the hospital. And Craig's like, that's
- 19:10great, honey.
- 19:10DANI: Yeah, it's really awkward between
- 19:12them.
- 19:12KARA: But then John comes in to cut the tension
- 19:15and he goes, that phone call was from the
- 19:18Dean of Buckner. You and I need to talk because
- 19:20Bay is on academic probation.
- 19:20DANI: Mind you, it's
- 19:24three weeks into the school year.
- 19:24KARA: Oh my God,
- 19:26yeah.
- 19:26DANI: Yeah, because Bay says, how could that
- 19:28be true? It's only been three weeks. And John
- 19:30says, well, it's true.
- 19:30KARA: The dean was impressed
- 19:33too. It's a new record. And then she goes, well,
- 19:35I'm Latina. What can I do? And referencing Kathryn's
- 19:39racist mother. And John goes, this has nothing
- 19:42to do with your racist grandmother.
- 19:42DANI: Kathryn
- 19:44goes, she's not racist. And John goes, oh, honey,
- 19:46please.
- 19:46KARA: But I was also a little frustrated with
- 19:49Bay in this moment because she was so concerned
- 19:51about Emmett's grades slipping.
- 19:51DANI: I know!
- 19:51KARA: And does not
- 19:55care about her own.
- 19:55DANI: Does not care about her own.
- 19:57Yeah, I was really - I loved John this whole episode.
- 20:00KARA: Me too.
- 20:00DANI: This is a real good John episode. But
- 20:03she's like, I don't need good grades because
- 20:06I'm going to go to art school and all they care
- 20:08about is my work. And he goes, Bay, I know you're
- 20:11in pain and that's wonderful, but I'm going to
- 20:13need you to try to apply yourself.
- 20:13KARA: Please. And
- 20:16he knows that she's acting out because Emmett just
- 20:18cheated on her.
- 20:18DANI: They don't know that he cheated
- 20:21on her.
- 20:21KARA: Well, she went through a breakup.
- 20:21DANI: Yeah.
- 20:21KARA: Two
- 20:23breakups in fact because Alex just left the party.
- 20:26DANI: True, but she did not give a fuck about that man.
- 20:28KARA: Vacation boyfriend, right.
- 20:28DANI: yeah.
- 20:28KARA: but he knows she's
- 20:31going through stuff and Angelo just moved in
- 20:33so she's feeling weird things.
- 20:33DANI: She wanted Angelo
- 20:36to move in though.
- 20:36KARA: but I think she regrets it,
- 20:38maybe.
- 20:38DANI: I know. I - yeah. I - Bay was pissing me off
- 20:42this episode. I know she's 16, but then Angelo
- 20:44comes in and she basically -
- 20:44KARA: Mid-fight.
- 20:44DANI: Mid-fight.
- 20:47and she basically weaponizes Angelo against her
- 20:50parents and is like Angelo will help me.
- 20:50KARA: With
- 20:53French.
- 20:53DANI: Yeah, with French. And also just will
- 20:55like help me because you guys suck. Obviously,
- 20:58classic 16 year old behavior but it is - yeah, it's
- 21:02pissing me off because I feel like she had so
- 21:04much awareness of the way Emmett was behaving
- 21:06and how toxic he was being. Like, playing his parents
- 21:10off of each other and then now she's doing the
- 21:12same thing.
- 21:12KARA: I know I was like she is manipulating
- 21:14Angelo this whole episode.
- 21:14DANI: Anyway in the kitchen.
- 21:18we're back in the kitchen with Daphne.
- 21:18KARA: She is
- 21:21dressed like a middle schooler. she's wearing
- 21:24a graphic floral, like lavender-color top and a
- 21:27cropped pink denim jacket.
- 21:27DANI: yeah. mind you she's
- 21:30at work. why is she the only - I understand she's
- 21:33washing dishes. it feels like she should still
- 21:35have a uniform for that. why is she the only person
- 21:39in the whole kitchen - it's giving her being in
- 21:41the kitchen at Buckner. I know she's the main
- 21:43character and that's like why.
- 21:43KARA: so strange.
- 21:43DANI: but
- 21:44in - at Buckner when she like didn't have to wear
- 21:47a uniform and everyone else did.
- 21:47KARA: yeah.
- 21:47DANI: Same energy.
- 21:50KARA: because everyone else is wearing white coats.
- 21:52DANI: yeah. this is like a fancy professional kitchen.
- 21:56KARA: No one wants your beads from your graphic t-shirt
- 22:00falling in the food.
- 22:00DANI: Exactly.
- 22:00KARA: And her long hair.
- 22:03Not tied back.
- 22:03DANI: Not tied back right now. Oh, so
- 22:06she comes in. I'm sorry to slander. She will
- 22:09later do the same thing, but she comes in on
- 22:12her day off. That's why she's dressed. That's
- 22:14why her hair is down. It's her day off and she's
- 22:17come in because she's made a special dish for
- 22:20Chef Jeff to try that's vegetarian.
- 22:20KARA: Yes.
- 22:20DANI: And
- 22:23she also wants to check on how that - she just
- 22:25wants to see him. But like her excuse is like,
- 22:27oh, I wanted to see about the cupcakes, like
- 22:29how they were. And then she's in and she sees
- 22:32a hot adult woman. She's the produce provider
- 22:36for the kitchen. Who comes in, flirts a little
- 22:39with Scuba. Hand feeds him a strawberry. And
- 22:42then Chef Jeff comes in and Daphne's like, hey,
- 22:45I made you something with cauliflower. What -
- 22:48KARA: Cauliflower gratin.
- 22:48DANI: Yeah, he pronounces it like
- 22:51[FRENCH ACCENT] gratin.
- 22:51KARA: I don't know.
- 22:51DANI: I don't fucking know. Whatever.
- 22:54KARA: I'm sure it's lovely. Gratin is just a lot of
- 22:57dairy and cheese. It's a lot of milk and cheese.
- 23:00So I'm sure it tastes wonderful.
- 23:00DANI: Okay. Yeah,
- 23:02I'm sure it's very good. But she like gives him
- 23:05this sad little tray and he's like, thanks. And
- 23:08then walks right past her to go to the hot adult
- 23:10produce provider who then hand feeds him a strawberry
- 23:14very sensually. Awesome.
- 23:14KARA: Daphne does not like
- 23:16this.
- 23:16DANI: Awesome for Chef Jeff. That's great. He
- 23:19should direct his attention there.
- 23:19KARA: Agreed.
- 23:19DANI: That
- 23:21woman is very sexy.
- 23:21KARA: It should've just end there.
- 23:24DANI: Yeah.
- 23:24KARA: Now Daphne magically transported back to
- 23:27the Kennish house because she is teaching Bay
- 23:29trigonometry.
- 23:29DANI: Well, it's her day off.
- 23:29KARA: Yeah, that's
- 23:33true.
- 23:33DANI: She's not working. She's teaching Bay trigonometry
- 23:36and SOHCAHTOA, which is still stuck to my head
- 23:39this day.
- 23:39DANI: That did really work.
- 23:39KARA: Yeah. A, who
- 23:42learned trig in a different country also learned
- 23:45that.
- 23:45DANI: Math is a universal language.
- 23:45KARA: Like Mean
- 23:48Girls.
- 23:48DANI: Exactly. I love this. I love that Daphne's
- 23:51tutoring Bay.
- 23:51KARA: And they have a little sisterhood
- 23:53moment because Bay's like, thank you so much.
- 23:55You saved my life. What can I do for you? And
- 23:57Daphne goes, actually, can I borrow this really
- 24:00sexy see-through black shirt that you have?
- 24:02DANI: Okay. When she said that, did you have a top
- 24:05in mind of Bay's? Because Bay is more blessed
- 24:08cleavage-wise.
- 24:08KARA: Yes.
- 24:08DANI: She has a million sexy lacy
- 24:13semi see-through tops that are, like, wonderful
- 24:16on her.
- 24:16KARA: I was thinking maybe long-sleeve lacy.
- 24:20DANI: Yes. She wears that one, like, it's almost meshy.
- 24:23KARA: Yeah.
- 24:23DANI: She wears that one a lot. Basically, I
- 24:26was not expecting the one that she pulled out.
- 24:28KARA: No, and it's fine.
- 24:28DANI: It's not sexy on Daphne at
- 24:32all. it's not -
- 24:32KARA: Bay pulls it out of the closet and
- 24:35it's like a boxy cropped black mesh.
- 24:35DANI: yeah.
- 24:35KARA: T-shirt
- 24:39and it has some lace detailing on the top and
- 24:41the bottom.
- 24:41DANI: it's very 2012, yes.
- 24:41KARA: Yes, it's something
- 24:45I absolutely would've worn with like
- 24:48a tank top underneath to a party.
- 24:48DANI: Right but it's
- 24:50something I never would have worn because I have
- 24:53very similar coloring to Daphne and also did
- 24:57not have a lot of boobs in high school. and so
- 25:00that shirt would have done absolutely nothing
- 25:02for me.
- 25:02KARA: Right.
- 25:02DANI: Daphne does not know this, so she's
- 25:05like I'm gonna wear it with a little cami that
- 25:08she's also borrowing from Bay.
- 25:08KARA: Because she doesn't
- 25:11have a black tank top?
- 25:11DANI: Yeah.
- 25:11KARA: But then she has
- 25:13bright blue.
- 25:13DANI: Yes. She's wearing a bright blue -
- 25:17a turquoise - turquoise bra.
- 25:17KARA: Yes.
- 25:17DANI: With very visible
- 25:22straps.
- 25:22KARA: Yes. They, like, poked out of this cami
- 25:25sole.
- 25:25DANI: And not that I want this teenager to be
- 25:29showing boob correctly anyway but it is not - it
- 25:32is a t-shirt bra. it's not a push-up bra. it's
- 25:35not like a Victoria's Secret sexy lacy bra. it's
- 25:38not a bra that you like want to show off. it's
- 25:40a functional cover-your-boobs bra.
- 25:40KARA: It's from Uniqlo.
- 25:40DANI: yeah exactly.
- 25:44it's from Forever 21 if we're being honest but -
- 25:47KARA: it's from Forever 21.
- 25:47DANI: it is not - it does - none of
- 25:50the elements of the outfit do anything for each
- 25:53other.
- 25:53KARA: It just doesn't work at all.
- 25:53DANI: She is showing
- 25:56so much stomach.
- 25:56KARA: It's strange.
- 25:56DANI: Wow, say that
- 25:59three times fast.
- 25:59KARA: We're going to get to that
- 26:00because Regina's going to see the outfit and
- 26:02I have a comment on it. But Bay is handing
- 26:05over the camisole and the black top to Daphne
- 26:08and goes, cool, is this for Wilke? And Daphne
- 26:11goes, no, we're not going to do long distance.
- 26:13This is for a new boy and he's older. And Bay
- 26:16does not ask any questions.
- 26:16DANI: No, she's just like,
- 26:18awesome. That tracks.
- 26:18KARA: She's got other things
- 26:21on her mind.
- 26:21DANI: Yeah. Also for Bay to hear he's
- 26:24so much older or he's older, I feel like she'd
- 26:27be like, oh, freshman in college.
- 26:27KARA: Sure.
- 26:27DANI: I don't
- 26:30think Daphne even says he's from work.
- 26:30KARA: No, she
- 26:33just says he's older.
- 26:33DANI: So that could be.
- 26:33KARA: Yeah,
- 26:3518, whatever.
- 26:35DANI: Yeah.
- 26:35KARA: 18 and 16, okay. But yeah,
- 26:39Bay doesn't know he's like 29.
- 26:39DANI: Yeah.
- 26:39KARA: I was just
- 26:42thinking. I am 28. And I was like, can I? Me
- 26:46meeting a 16-year-old, first of all, I would
- 26:48immediately clock that they're 16.
- 26:48DANI: Right.
- 26:48KARA: And
- 26:50second of all, I was like, I talk to 16-year
- 26:53-olds the way I talk to, like, 7-year-olds.
- 26:55I'm like, how was school today?
- 26:55DANI: Right.
- 26:55KARA: Do you
- 26:58like your classes? What's your favorite movie?
- 27:00DANI: Like, can you spell circle?
- 27:00KARA: Literally, that's
- 27:05how I feel talking to a 16-year-old.
- 27:05DANI: Yeah.
- 27:07KARA: The way I would talk to, like my nieces and
- 27:10nephews.
- 27:10DANI: The way Steve talks on Blue's Clues.
- 27:13KARA: Literally.
- 27:13DANI: Like, where's the chair?
- 27:13KARA: Dora the
- 27:16Explorer.
- 27:16DANI: Backpack. Backpack.
- 27:16KARA: I was like, in
- 27:20what universe do they have anything in common?
- 27:22DANI: No.
- 27:22KARA: Like, I can't imagine myself having anything
- 27:25in common with a 16-year-old. So, like, what?
- 27:28DANI: Again, she's rocking a side braid this entire
- 27:31time.
- 27:31KARA: Dani's, like, physically hitting her head.
- 27:35DANI: It's just so upsetting to me. And I know that.
- 27:39I just cannot imagine it, genuinely. I have friends
- 27:42very dear to me who are 24. And sometimes I'm
- 27:45like, oh my god, you're 24.
- 27:45KARA: I know.
- 27:45DANI: Sometimes
- 27:48they say something and I'm like, huh, jump scare.
- 27:51And I just turned 27.
- 27:51KARA: Right.
- 27:51DANI: So that is not a
- 27:53dramatic age gap at all.
- 27:53KARA: No, to me, because I
- 27:56have a younger brother who is going to be 23
- 27:59soon. Anyone around that age or younger, I'm
- 28:02like, that's a baby.
- 28:02DANI: Yeah.
- 28:02KARA: I have a baby brother.
- 28:06DANI: Yes.
- 28:06KARA: So I'm like, no, you're a baby. You know
- 28:08nothing.
- 28:08DANI: Weird. That's how I feel about my brother,
- 28:11too. And he's much, much older.
- 28:11KARA: Right. Regina
- 28:13walks into Daphne's bedroom. Daphne is now dressed
- 28:17in the black top.
- 28:17DANI: And we get the full fit. And
- 28:19I must note that she's put barrettes in her hair.
- 28:22KARA: Yes.
- 28:22DANI: And they are the same blue of the bra. There's
- 28:26heavy eye makeup.
- 28:26KARA: Heavy eye makeup, a dark lip.
- 28:29DANI: This was exactly, did I tell you a couple weeks
- 28:32ago when I went to get my makeup done for a press
- 28:34event and I left feeling like a drag queen with
- 28:37the amount of makeup that they put on my face?
- 28:39KARA: Was it that?
- 28:39DANI: Yeah, that's how I felt. That's
- 28:42how I imagined Daphne must be feeling.
- 28:42KARA: The color
- 28:44just doesn't work with her.
- 28:44DANI: No.
- 28:44KARA: It's like she
- 28:46borrowed mommy's makeup.
- 28:46DANI: Yeah.
- 28:46KARA: Which is probably
- 28:49exactly what she did.
- 28:49DANI: And that's how I felt.
- 28:51KARA: Regina walks in and goes, and why aren't you
- 28:53dressed like a toddler?
- 28:53DANI: Yeah.
- 28:53KARA: So she's wearing
- 28:56a tank top.
- 28:56DANI: The stomach is the big problem for
- 28:59me.
- 28:59KARA: It's so much stomach.
- 28:59DANI: Low rise jeans, mind
- 29:03you. Well, they're like mid rise. It's a lot
- 29:06of stomach.
- 29:06KARA: Because Daphne. Not Daphne. Because
- 29:09Regina says, like, you're not wearing that. And
- 29:12Daphne goes, well, Bay wears this. Why can't
- 29:14I? But Bay would never wear something like that.
- 29:17Because Bay has never shown that much stomach.
- 29:19DANI: No. Kara: Bay always has her tummy covered.
- 29:19DANI: Yeah. I
- 29:22think the tummy is the more - ugh, I don't like
- 29:24the word tummy.
- 29:24KARA: The stomach.
- 29:24DANI: In this context.
- 29:27The stomach is the more, like, shocking. Especially
- 29:30because Daphne's so pale.
- 29:30KARA: Yeah.
- 29:30DANI: It's like, it
- 29:33is shocking. It's not - again, she doesn't have -
- 29:36there's no cleavage happening in this shirt.
- 29:38So it's just like, okay, arms, shoulders, bra
- 29:41strap. Whoa, a lot of stomach.
- 29:41KARA: And then also -
- 29:44DANI: Mind you, she's going to work. She's going to
- 29:47her job.
- 29:47KARA: She's going to work in this.
- 29:47DANI: To a professional
- 29:48work setting. That's a lot of stomach for someone
- 29:51who's working with food.
- 29:51KARA: It's just so unprofessional
- 29:54to go work in that.
- 29:54DANI: It's very unprofessional.
- 29:55KARA: Also, the blue bra is - the cups are visible.
- 30:00DANI: Yeah. Because she's, like, pulled down the camisole.
- 30:02KARA: She's pulled down the camisole so you can see
- 30:04the top of the bra and the straps.
- 30:04DANI: It's very
- 30:0716-year-old, actually.
- 30:07KARA: I know.
- 30:07DANI: It's very, like,
- 30:10yeah.
- 30:10KARA: Yeah.
- 30:10DANI: But God, it's so hard to look at.
- 30:13KARA: Yeah. Regina and Melody that night, though, are
- 30:15coming to the restaurant for dinner. But before
- 30:18they leave, Regina says, please put on a jacket.
- 30:20And Daphne says, but you never said anything
- 30:22like that to Bay. Why can't I do the same? And
- 30:24Regina immediately clocks that this is for a
- 30:27boy. And she's like, you don't have to dress
- 30:29like this to impress anyone. And Daphne's like,
- 30:32Mom, that's not what this is for.
- 30:32DANI: This is for
- 30:35me. My bright blue bra, it's for me.
- 30:35KARA: My bad makeup?
- 30:39It's for me.
- 30:39DANI: It's for me.
- 30:39KARA: I am dying to know
- 30:41what she was wearing on her feet.
- 30:41DANI: I know, because
- 30:44we don't really get a look at it.
- 30:44KARA: No.
- 30:44DANI: I feel
- 30:46like it had to be like a wedge. A wedge heel.
- 30:49KARA: In the kitchen?
- 30:49DANI: Under bootcut jeans.
- 30:49KARA: In the kitchen?
- 30:52DANI: Tough.
- 30:52KARA: No clogs?
- 30:52DANI: I know. It's not safe.
- 30:52KARA: It's
- 30:57interview time. We are in front of the children's
- 30:59hospital. The moms, Regina and Kathryn, sit
- 31:02down with local reporter, Marcia Grace.
- 31:02DANI: I like
- 31:05that you wrote her full name.
- 31:05KARA: I think it's a
- 31:07riff of Nancy Grace.
- 31:07DANI: Oh.
- 31:07KARA: Yeah, who's like the
- 31:10Fox News girlie.
- 31:10DANI: I'm going to be honest. I didn't
- 31:12care about this storyline.
- 31:12KARA: I'm going to go through
- 31:14it fast.
- 31:14DANI: Go through it.
- 31:14KARA: The interviewer is like,
- 31:17we're here to talk about the Switched at Birth story.
- 31:19Here's Kathryn and Regina.
- 31:19DANI: We do get a reveal
- 31:22of the title of the novel.
- 31:22KARA: What did you see?
- 31:25It's just called Switched at Birth, right?
- 31:25DANI: No,
- 31:27it's called The True Story of a Mother's Journey.
- 31:30KARA: I think it was Switched at Birth, colon, The
- 31:33True Story of a Mother's Journey.
- 31:33DANI: But Marcia
- 31:34Grace only says the author of A True Story of
- 31:38a Mother's Journey.
- 31:38KARA: Interesting. Because the
- 31:41book itself -
- 31:41DANI: Because I was like, that's a terrible -
- 31:42I know, it has Switched at Birth on the title.
- 31:44On the, like, the words.
- 31:44KARA: Yeah, if it just had
- 31:47A True Story of a Mother's Journey, that's bad.
- 31:49DANI: It's a really bad book title.
- 31:49KARA: Yeah.
- 31:49DANI: That's Kathryn's
- 31:52first book.
- 31:52KARA: But surely the publicists will
- 31:54fix that. Or the editors. Whatever.
- 31:54DANI: Well, she
- 31:57churned it out pretty fast.
- 31:57KARA: She asked Kathryn.
- 31:59Well, she doesn't ask Kathryn anything, actually.
- 32:02DANI: She doesn't give a fuck about Kathryn.
- 32:02KARA: No.
- 32:04She brushes everything Kathryn says off and
- 32:07goes, Regina, tell me about life as an alcoholic
- 32:10single mother with a Deaf child. Your life is
- 32:12fascinating. How'd you do it? And she just kind
- 32:15of like insinuates that Regina was a better parent
- 32:18because Regina had doubts about Daphne.
- 32:18DANI: Yes.
- 32:21And that Regina had more to overcome.
- 32:21KARA: Yeah.
- 32:21DANI: Parenting.
- 32:25KARA: And then she goes, tell us about how you found
- 32:28the time to become fluent in sign language. She's
- 32:30not fluent in sign language.
- 32:30DANI: I know. I was like,
- 32:33oh.
- 32:33KARA: Yeah. But the whole interview, she's like,
- 32:36Regina, you're amazing. Kathryn, I don't give
- 32:37a shit about you. Then the interview is done
- 32:39and Regina's like, that was fun. I kind of loved
- 32:42that.
- 32:42DANI: She was uplifted.
- 32:42KARA: Yeah. And then she invites
- 32:45Kathryn to the restaurant with her and Melody
- 32:47tonight.
- 32:47DANI: Anyway, now we're at the kitchen.
- 32:47KARA: Daphne
- 32:51looks crazy.
- 32:51DANI: Daphne looks fucking crazy.
- 32:51KARA: Everyone
- 32:53else is wearing -
- 32:53DANI: Under the, like, bright lights
- 32:55of the kitchen, too. It's rough.
- 32:55KARA: Everyone else
- 32:57is wearing normal kitchen clothes. And she's
- 32:59wearing her slutty outfit.
- 32:59DANI: Yeah.
- 32:59KARA: Scuba says,
- 33:02nice shirt. Are you going to a stripper's funeral?
- 33:04Thankfully, I don't think Daphne understood what
- 33:06he was saying.
- 33:06DANI: No. Or she just pretended not
- 33:09to, to protect her feelings. She did look kind
- 33:11of sad after he said it.
- 33:11KARA: Yeah. Chef Jeff sees
- 33:14her and goes, why are you dressed like that?
- 33:16DANI: And she says, I have family coming in. Girl.
- 33:20That's not for your family.
- 33:20KARA: No. Now we're back
- 33:23at the Kennish house. Bay and Angelo are watching
- 33:26a French movie. John walks in and he's like,
- 33:29honey, why aren't you studying?
- 33:29DANI: And she's changed
- 33:32her essay topic to French New Wave so that they
- 33:34can watch movies.
- 33:34KARA: I guess.
- 33:34DANI: It's fine. Whatever.
- 33:38KARA: Yeah, I'm kind of like, whatever, as long as
- 33:40you do the paper.
- 33:40DANI: It's cute. They're bonding.
- 33:43This is what they should be doing.
- 33:43KARA: Yeah.
- 33:43DANI: This
- 33:45is good.
- 33:45KARA: It's just, I'm sure for John, it must
- 33:47feel so weird.
- 33:47DANI: Yeah, and he's clearly weirded
- 33:50out that she tries to invite him to join. he
- 33:52says no. I feel like he should - he should join.
- 33:55KARA: but maybe he's like, I feel like I'm intruding
- 33:57on their moment so I'm just gonna let it be.
- 33:57DANI: yeah.
- 34:00so and then after he's gone Bay gets a text.
- 34:00KARA: Yes.
- 34:05from Zarra. it's time to do street art.
- 34:05DANI: Yeah she's
- 34:09like meet me in the corner right now. and so Bay's
- 34:11like, Angelo, do you mind covering for me? and she's
- 34:15being so manipulative.
- 34:15KARA: Well, he first correctly
- 34:18says, I don't think it's a good idea. And then
- 34:20she goes, well, you're my dad too. You also have
- 34:23a say.
- 34:23DANI: And he thinks it's not a good idea.
- 34:23KARA: And
- 34:25I think it's one thing to let her go, but the
- 34:27two of them have to go up to John and fully outright
- 34:30lie to him.
- 34:30DANI: Yeah.
- 34:30KARA: That they're going to go to
- 34:33a French cafe to work on this paper together.
- 34:36And John's like, okay, whatever. Be home by 10:30.
- 34:38Oh, and while she's there, she's presenting all
- 34:41the work that she's finished.
- 34:41DANI: Yeah.
- 34:41KARA: And John
- 34:44says, you're always wonderful. But if you do
- 34:47your work, you could really be somebody. Ouch.
- 34:50DANI: Yeah, ouch.
- 34:50KARA: Yeah, it was the ouch moment. So
- 34:54Bay, I think, internally is like, fuck you. I'm
- 34:56going to go out and do this. Back at the restaurant.
- 34:58Regina, Kathryn, and Melody are there. And
- 35:02they meet Chef Jeff. They are starstruck.
- 35:02DANI: Melody
- 35:04especially.
- 35:04KARA: Regina is interpreting Melody's stories
- 35:08to Kathryn. The three of them are sitting at
- 35:10the table. Melody's talking about all her bad
- 35:12dates. So obviously she's horny and she needs
- 35:15a guy.
- 35:15DANI: Yeah.
- 35:15KARA: One of the bad dates they talked
- 35:18about was some guy carried his pug with him everywhere,
- 35:20which to me sounds awesome.
- 35:20DANI: I don't know.
- 35:20KARA: Depends
- 35:23on the dog.
- 35:23DANI: Depends on the man.
- 35:23KARA: Two things.
- 35:23DANI: Yeah.
- 35:27Yeah.
- 35:27KARA: Chef Jeff is, like, serving them.
- 35:27DANI: Yeah,
- 35:30he, okay, so he, they are introduced to him in
- 35:34the entryway and Daphne's like, I'm gonna deal
- 35:37with them. And he's like, no, no, we need you.
- 35:39You go back there. You're our secret weapon.
- 35:41KARA: She's wearing her crazy outfit and just an apron
- 35:43over it. Hair still down.
- 35:43DANI: Yeah, really bad.
- 35:47And she's handling desserts that night. So, like,
- 35:50she's fully handling food.
- 35:50KARA: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 35:50DANI: Because
- 35:52he asks Scuba to have her help him.
- 35:52KARA: She was helping
- 35:56with the pear tart.
- 35:56DANI: So yeah, so her hair's for
- 35:59sure getting in someone's pear tart. And Jeff
- 36:02is like, let me play waiter for some reason.
- 36:06And the reason is that he kind of is catching
- 36:09that Melody is eyeing him. Melody is really laying
- 36:13it on thick. You know, the way she was like episode
- 36:15three with John.
- 36:15KARA: Yeah.
- 36:15DANI: When she was flirting,
- 36:18even though he was married. Yeah, exactly.
- 36:18KARA: Heart
- 36:20eyes.
- 36:20DANI: Heart eyes. And Chef Jeff's maybe kind
- 36:23of into it, which is -
- 36:23KARA: But he doesn't know anything
- 36:26she's signing.
- 36:26DANI: No.
- 36:26KARA: He just catches a vibe.
- 36:26DANI: Yeah,
- 36:29the vibe is strong.
- 36:29KARA: Yeah.
- 36:29DANI: I don't think they
- 36:32need to share a language for him to understand.
- 36:35KARA: He serves them in an amuse bouche. And he explains
- 36:38it means an amusement for the mouth. And Melody
- 36:41signs, you can amuse my mouth anytime you want.
- 36:44And Regina interprets that as she loves scallions.
- 36:47DANI: Fair.
- 36:47KARA: But there's no way Melody would've wanted that
- 36:50interpreted.
- 36:50DANI: No.
- 36:50KARA: That's a fun secret for her.
- 36:53DANI: Yeah, she likes to play that game.
- 36:53KARA: Meanwhile,
- 36:55Kathryn is downing like 12 cups of wine, 12
- 36:58glasses of wine.
- 36:58DANI: Yeah, Kathryn's really going
- 37:01for it.
- 37:01KARA: Yeah, and she keeps making snide comments
- 37:03about Regina being a hero and the best mother
- 37:06ever. So Kathryn's having a time right now.
- 37:09Bay is off to do some street art now. She meets
- 37:12up with Zarra and Zarra goes, hey girl. You have
- 37:15to do a solo piece, and it needs to be in a risky,
- 37:17highly visible place to gain the group's respect.
- 37:20This could have been a phone call.
- 37:20DANI: This could
- 37:22have been a text!
- 37:22KARA: She just leaves.
- 37:22DANI: Yeah.
- 37:22KARA: Does
- 37:25Bay have to do it now?
- 37:25DANI: Yes.
- 37:25KARA: Why now?
- 37:25DANI: We find
- 37:28out later that yes, she has to do it right now,
- 37:30which she doesn't have any of her art supplies
- 37:32with her.
- 37:32KARA: Maybe it's in her car?
- 37:32DANI: Maybe.
- 37:32KARA: Again,
- 37:35yeah.
- 37:35DANI: Okay, whatever. So her and Angelo drove
- 37:37separately?
- 37:37KARA: I don't know. Back in the restaurant
- 37:39kitchen, Daphne is serving a pear tart with creme
- 37:44anglaise. It looks pretty good, actually.
- 37:44DANI: It
- 37:46does look good, but her smug face is pissing
- 37:49me off this episode so much.
- 37:49KARA: She's like, I'm
- 37:51helping Scuba with the dessert. I'm amazing.
- 37:53DANI: He tries it, and she's got this smile on her
- 37:56face as he's trying it because she knows how
- 37:59good it is. And it just made me so mad.
- 37:59KARA: I know.
- 38:02DANI: With her stupid top on.
- 38:02KARA: Yeah. Chef Jeff comes
- 38:05in. She runs off to do dishes. But then he asks
- 38:08her for help with tomorrow's brunch. And he
- 38:11wants her to stay. And she's thrilled.
- 38:11DANI: She is
- 38:13stoked. Did you clock that she sees him coming.
- 38:17She runs over to the dishes.
- 38:17KARA: Yes.
- 38:17DANI: Is fully facing
- 38:21away from him. He says Daphne. And she turns.
- 38:26KARA: You're right.
- 38:26DANI: Do you think that that was a mistake
- 38:28on Katie LeClerc's part? Or do you think that
- 38:30they were trying to imply, like, Daphne's just
- 38:32pretending and, like, knows he's coming.
- 38:32KARA: She
- 38:35has magic hearing.
- 38:35DANI: Right. It's just her magic
- 38:37ears.
- 38:37KARA: Well, maybe she heard, like, a tiny bit.
- 38:39I don't know. The kitchen's noisy, though.
- 38:39DANI: Yeah.
- 38:41I don't think. I don't think so.
- 38:41KARA: Yeah, this is
- 38:43Katie LeClerc's fault. I'm going to put it on her.
- 38:46DANI: Okay.
- 38:46KARA: Now, Angelo's on the Kennish property,
- 38:49goes up to Toby again, who is once again strumming
- 38:52a guitar.
- 38:52DANI: Yeah, Toby didn't really have a lot
- 38:54to do this episode.
- 38:54KARA: But Angelo looks stressed.
- 38:57It's past curfew.
- 38:57DANI: He's like, hey, do you know
- 38:59where your sister is? He doesn't realize this
- 39:01about Bay, that she's never once been able to
- 39:03make a curfew ever. And then John finds them
- 39:06in there, and he's like, where's Bay? And Angelo
- 39:10does the right thing and confesses he doesn't
- 39:13know. he was swindled by the 16 year old. John
- 39:16has a fantastic monologue about like, god damn
- 39:19it, you cannot be her friend. you are her father.
- 39:22he yells, you are her father. and then he's like
- 39:25you're her father.
- 39:25KARA: You need to say no to her sometimes.
- 39:28your job is not to make her like you. But you
- 39:31have to protect her.
- 39:31DANI: Yeah.
- 39:31KARA: And now what do we
- 39:34do? We sit, we worry, and we wait.
- 39:34DANI: Yeah.
- 39:34KARA: Yeah.
- 39:37I wrote great acting from DW Moffet here.
- 39:40DANI: Yeah. He's doing a great job.
- 39:40KARA: Yeah. Now, this
- 39:43scene made me crack up. We're in the restaurant
- 39:45parking lot now. Regina's designated driver because
- 39:48Kathryn is like 12 drinks in.
- 39:48DANI: Yeah. And we're
- 39:51back in the fancy Toyota with the Pandora radio.
- 39:54DANI: It's a really good moment for some product placement.
- 39:56KARA: Kathryn drunkenly says, you can turn the car
- 39:59on with the button.
- 39:59DANI: And then Regina's like, now
- 40:01the center console screen is trying to sell me
- 40:03movie tickets.
- 40:03KARA: On movieticket.com.
- 40:03DANI: It was not
- 40:07subtle.
- 40:07KARA: And Kathryn goes, no one cares what
- 40:09I have to say. They just want to hear your story.
- 40:11You kept my daughter away from me for 13 years
- 40:14and I'm the bad guy because I'm rich and out
- 40:16of touch. How did I know she wasn't my daughter?
- 40:19And then Regina's like, hold on. Let me turn
- 40:21on the navigation system in this Toyota and take
- 40:24us somewhere. And then she takes them to the
- 40:27children's hospital, which I guess has no security.
- 40:29DANI: Let's just wrap this up real quick because this
- 40:31is crazy. I see this in shows and movies all
- 40:34the time where people just like go to look at
- 40:36the babies.
- 40:36KARA: Like newborn viewing.
- 40:36DANI: Reflect on
- 40:39life or whatever. Is that even a thing that they
- 40:42have? Do they even have a like newborn viewing
- 40:44window?
- 40:44KARA: One, I hope so. And two, I don't know.
- 40:47DANI: You hope so so that we can go look at the newborn
- 40:50babies?
- 40:50KARA: No, but if like I'm in the hospital one
- 40:52day.
- 40:52DANI: You're like, I'm just going to take a -
- 40:52KARA: Take
- 40:55a gander.
- 40:55DANI: Take a gander.
- 40:55KARA: Babies are cute.
- 40:55DANI: So
- 40:58yes, for your viewing. Okay.
- 40:58KARA: I don't know.
- 40:58DANI: I
- 41:02just think it's weird to have it. Like, I don't
- 41:05think I'd want to put my baby in the baby viewing
- 41:07window.
- 41:07KARA: That's a good point.
- 41:07DANI: But they're just
- 41:09like in there. They roll up. They don't even
- 41:11have visitor's badges or anything on.
- 41:11KARA: Nothing.
- 41:13DANI: They're looking in the window to be like, wow,
- 41:15they're so small. They all kind of look the same.
- 41:19KARA: Distinguishing them isn't as easy as you think.
- 41:21DANI: Yeah. And Kathryn feels better. And then a
- 41:24nurse comes up and is finally like, you guys
- 41:27okay? You two random ladies okay? and they're
- 41:30also - it seems like she's about to let them meet
- 41:33one of the babies. she was like are you here to
- 41:35see anyone in particular? like of the babies.
- 41:35KARA: and
- 41:38they're like take a baby.
- 41:38DANI: Literally and they're
- 41:40like no.
- 41:40DANI: Right, they've learned nothing.
- 41:40KARA: Learned nothing.
- 41:43DANI: They're like no, we're just taking a trip down
- 41:45memory lane. red flag sentence. the nurse should
- 41:48be like okay, let me just call security really
- 41:50quick just in case. Nothing. They start to go
- 41:53off. And Kathryn, still drunk, visibly drunk.
- 41:56Again, another red flag for the nurse who's not
- 41:58doing her job.
- 41:58KARA: Still drunk.
- 41:58DANI: Looks back at the
- 42:01nurse.
- 42:01KARA: And she looks familiar.
- 42:01DANI: She looks familiar.
- 42:04KARA: The nurse is like a beautiful blonde woman.
- 42:04DANI: They
- 42:06go home. And Kathryn wakes up and goes through
- 42:10the box of Angelo's stuff.
- 42:10KARA: That they went in
- 42:13his storage room for many episodes ago.
- 42:13DANI: That
- 42:15I guess they never gave back to him.
- 42:15KARA: They still
- 42:18have it.
- 42:18DANI: And she pulls out the photograph of
- 42:21the woman that they found that really upset Regina
- 42:24and sent her into a spiral. And it's the nurse
- 42:27from the hospital.
- 42:27KARA: It's several pictures of Angelo
- 42:30and the nurse.
- 42:30DANI: Yes.
- 42:30KARA: And now we know that the
- 42:33source that Angelo has is her.
- 42:33DANI: Yeah. Potentially
- 42:37his ex-situationship.
- 42:37KARA: And then she calls Craig
- 42:40Tebbe. She's like, hey.
- 42:40DANI: She calls her ex-situationship.
- 42:43She says, hey.
- 42:43KARA: So that's the end of that.
- 42:43DANI: Yeah.
- 42:47KARA: Plot line.
- 42:47DANI: That's those girls wrapped up.
- 42:47KARA: Yeah.
- 42:50If I was drunk, I would never look at someone
- 42:52and be like, oh.
- 42:52DANI: I've seen a photo of you with
- 42:55them. I actually feel like I kind of would.
- 42:55KARA: Maybe.
- 42:57DANI: One time when I was drunk at a bar, I unlocked
- 43:00all of the Italian that I studied in high school
- 43:02and was able to have a fluent conversation.
- 43:02KARA: Sometimes
- 43:05I'm really good at signing when I'm drunk.
- 43:05DANI: Your
- 43:07inhibitions are lowered.
- 43:07KARA: Yeah. Feel the rain
- 43:10on your skin.
- 43:10DANI: Bay's finally home. She walks in,
- 43:14both dads on the stairs waiting for her.
- 43:14KARA: Stressed.
- 43:18DANI: Drama.
- 43:18KARA: John goes, hi, honey. We've turned our
- 43:21lives upside down so that Angelo can be a part
- 43:24of your life. And yet you are treating him like
- 43:26a convenient alibi. He deserves more than that.
- 43:29Good night.
- 43:29DANI: So good for him to do the guilt play
- 43:32because Bay is just immediately like, I'm sorry,
- 43:35I messed up. But you can tell she doesn't give
- 43:37a fuck.
- 43:37KARA: No.
- 43:37DANI: But he really lays on the guilt.
- 43:40KARA: Good.
- 43:40DANI: As he should. And I think it's effective.
- 43:43KARA: It works. I wrote that I think Angelo gets Bay,
- 43:46but John knows Bay.
- 43:46DANI: Yes.
- 43:46KARA: Like.
- 43:46DANI: Absolutely.
- 43:50KARA: And John is able to rightfully call Bay out for
- 43:52manipulating the situation.
- 43:52DANI: John is a good parent.
- 43:55KARA: He is.
- 43:55DANI: He is. He's involved. He cares.
- 43:55KARA: I just
- 43:57love seeing parents work together.
- 43:57DANI: We get so
- 44:00little of it in the show.
- 44:00KARA: Now we're back in the
- 44:02kitchen. The shift is over. And Chef Jeff is
- 44:05cooking salmon. And Daphne's doing the dishes.
- 44:07It's just the two of them, I think.
- 44:07DANI: Yeah.
- 44:07KARA: They
- 44:10share the salmon dish. And he goes, by the way,
- 44:12your moms at dinner, they're so cute together.
- 44:15Ally.
- 44:15DANI: Love. And Daphne's like, ugh, they're not
- 44:18together. It's a long story that she doesn't
- 44:21want to tell him. Probably because, okay, this
- 44:24is where I think that Daphne knows that he doesn't
- 44:27know that she's in high school. And if she tells
- 44:29him this, he's going to, like, Google the story
- 44:31and then find out that she's 16 years old.
- 44:31KARA: Good
- 44:34point. But she is hired legally, I assume.
- 44:34DANI: Yeah.
- 44:39KARA: So if he just looked at any paperwork of her
- 44:43being hired.
- 44:43DANI: He's never done that.
- 44:43KARA: If he did,
- 44:46he would find her birthday. It's 1995.
- 44:46DANI: Absolutely,
- 44:49he would. But he's never done that.
- 44:49KARA: Yeah, that's
- 44:52true.
- 44:52DANI: He's not reading that. He's not reading
- 44:54the ADA rules. None of it.
- 44:54KARA: No, but what he is
- 44:56doing is promoting her to garde manger.
- 44:56DANI: Yeah,
- 44:59which is salads.
- 44:59KARA: It's cold food.
- 44:59DANI: For layman's
- 45:03like me.
- 45:03KARA: It's salads and dressings.
- 45:03DANI: Yeah.
- 45:03KARA: You're
- 45:06going to work with Scuba. Daphne is jumping,
- 45:09physically jumping.
- 45:09DANI: Physically leaps into his
- 45:11arms.
- 45:11KARA: Yeah, goes in for a hug.
- 45:11DANI: And then is like,
- 45:14oh, sorry, shouldn't have done that. But yay!
- 45:18KARA: And then Chef Jeff is like, great, I'm going
- 45:20to go home for the night. I'm going to grab myself
- 45:21a bottle of wine, kind of. He doesn't say he's
- 45:24going to go home for the night.
- 45:24DANI: No, he says,
- 45:25can you go grab me the fancy wine that I can't
- 45:29pronounce? And she's like, what? I can't read
- 45:31your lips on that. And he says, never mind. I
- 45:34got it. You stay here and you work on your French.
- 45:36Fair. Those are, again, words I cannot pronounce.
- 45:39So he leaves. Before this, she was washing wine
- 45:43glasses.
- 45:43KARA: So she's like, oh, great. He's going
- 45:46to get minor intoxicated.
- 45:46DANI: Okay. So I think, again,
- 45:50this further confirms that she thinks that he
- 45:53thinks she is older.
- 45:53KARA: Right.
- 45:53DANI: She must think that
- 45:57he thinks that she's at least 21 because she
- 45:59pulls two wine glasses and puts them on the counter
- 46:03next to the salmon and then leans. Oh, the lean
- 46:06was so bad. She leans so awkwardly against the
- 46:09counter and her crop top. And that's the scene
- 46:12he walks out to.
- 46:12KARA: And then he's like, um, anyway.
- 46:17DANI: I don't need the glasses. Thanks. Scuba will
- 46:20be back soon.
- 46:20KARA: Did he just want this wine to bring
- 46:23home for himself?
- 46:23DANI: Not for himself, girl.
- 46:23KARA: Oh,
- 46:26because it's for Mel -
- 46:26DANI: He's going
- 46:28somewhere. He has plans. He asked her to stay
- 46:31late to prep brunch so that he can get off early.
- 46:34KARA: Yes.
- 46:34DANI: So that he can get off.
- 46:34KARA: Okay. It's coming
- 46:37together.
- 46:37DANI: So he - it's so cringe, this moment.
- 46:41It's so unfortunate. So Daphne, wounded from
- 46:45this rejection, what does she do? What does Daphne
- 46:47always do when she's wounded? She calls Emmett.
- 46:49KARA: Calls Emmett.
- 46:49DANI: Emmett shows up. She's slumped
- 46:53on her bench with her little puppy dog eyes.
- 46:55KARA: It's like a park bench. It's the middle of the
- 46:57night.
- 46:57DANI: Middle of the night. And he's like, what's
- 47:01up? And she's like, am I just like a toddler
- 47:04geek that like, can't be sexy?
- 47:04KARA: Am I a cardigan-
- 47:07wearing opposite-of-sexy, hopeless geek?
- 47:07DANI: Girl,
- 47:10yeah, kind of.
- 47:10KARA: Her signing did say though, do
- 47:12I look like a geek with the cardigan, no style?
- 47:15DANI: And?
- 47:15KARA: Both are true.
- 47:15DANI: Both are true.
- 47:15KARA: Just the translation
- 47:18was silly. And Emmett's like, who is this guy?
- 47:21Don't let him mess with your head.
- 47:21DANI: Right. I really felt
- 47:24for Emmett. It's kind of getting a taste of his
- 47:26own medicine, but, like, she fully is like, well,
- 47:29what did you think of me? Like, when you had
- 47:31a crush on me for years and years and years.
- 47:34And it's like, Daphne, don't exploit Emmett's
- 47:37emotions.
- 47:37KARA: And he doesn't take the bait. He just
- 47:40goes, what do you think?
- 47:40DANI: Yeah.
- 47:40KARA: You have really
- 47:42bad timing. And that's kind of it for them.
- 47:42DANI: Yeah,
- 47:45that's it for that scene.
- 47:45KARA: Yeah.
- 47:45DANI: Oh, she also
- 47:47says, like, she says to him, like, this guy,
- 47:50he's just confusing me, like, one second, he's
- 47:53all buddy buddy with me and then next he's
- 47:56treating me like I'm just some kid he's stuck
- 47:57with. you are a kid!
- 47:57KARA: that he literally is stuck
- 48:01with.
- 48:01DANI: He is stuck with.
- 48:01KARA: yeah.
- 48:01DANI: so Emmett takes her
- 48:03home and then Emmett is headed home himself but
- 48:07he's staying at his dad's which is established
- 48:08so then in the morning we see a scene of him
- 48:12riding home to his mother's house and who is
- 48:15leaving his mother's house?
- 48:15KARA: After a kiss.
- 48:15DANI: After
- 48:19a kiss that made my skin crawl. But Chef Jeff,
- 48:24who clearly took that fancy bottle of French
- 48:27wine over to Melody's and [BLEEP].
- 48:27KARA: Yep.
- 48:27DANI: Which is crazy.
- 48:34KARA: Crazy.
- 48:34DANI: Okay, this was when I texted you a couple
- 48:36weeks ago, like, don't look up Chef Jeff because
- 48:38you're going to get it spoiled for yourself.
- 48:40Because I had completely forgotten that he hooks
- 48:43up with Melody before anything goes down with
- 48:45him and Daphne.
- 48:45KARA: Crazy, because he knows she is
- 48:47tied to Daphne, his co-worker.
- 48:47DANI: Yes, that, but,
- 48:51like, whatever, kind of.
- 48:51KARA: OK.
- 48:51DANI: Like if he wasn't
- 48:53interested in Daphne, it would be fine. And obviously
- 48:56in this episode, it's like played off that Daphne's
- 48:59imagining things with Chef Jeff. But we know
- 49:01that that's not true. We know that there is some -
- 49:03we know because we've seen ahead that there is
- 49:06something between her and Chef Jeff, that he is
- 49:08interested in her. So then the fact that he's
- 49:11like, and I'm going to fuck this woman who is
- 49:13best friends with both of her moms is crazy.
- 49:17And also, it's just icky. It's - Melody's basically
- 49:20her mom.
- 49:20KARA: I know.
- 49:20DANI: Like, what in The Odyssey is
- 49:24going on? It's so gross. And Emmett doesn't really
- 49:28recognize him. He's just, like, there's a glimmer.
- 49:29KARA: He doesn't know who Chef Jeff is.
- 49:29DANI: Yeah, so there's
- 49:31just a glimmer of, like, who's that guy getting
- 49:34into that very notable car?
- 49:34KARA: It's a red Jeep.
- 49:37DANI: Yeah.
- 49:37KARA: And then Chef Jeff drives away.
- 49:37DANI: Like, with
- 49:40the doors off.
- 49:40KARA: Yeah, no doors. It's Kansas City,
- 49:42and you don't need that.
- 49:42DANI: Okay, anyway, then back
- 49:45at the Kennish house. Bay, it's the next morning.
- 49:48She's up. She's like telling John like, oh, I
- 49:50want to show you my French paper. Does John speak
- 49:52French?
- 49:52KARA: No. He said, I'll look at it later.
- 49:52DANI: Crazy.
- 49:55KARA: But he's busy.
- 49:55DANI: He's busy. He has to go to the
- 49:57car wash. There's an issue. And he said, well,
- 50:00let me look at it before I call the police. And
- 50:02Bay says, the police? I'll just go with you to
- 50:04the car wash.
- 50:04KARA: Yeah.
- 50:04DANI: And they pull up to the car
- 50:07wash. And unsurprisingly, Bay has tagged the
- 50:12car wash with a very on the nose piece of artwork.
- 50:16KARA: It's a very signature Bay art of, like,
- 50:20a girl in a dress. And then in, like, bubble
- 50:23font, it says, I was here.
- 50:23DANI: Yeah. She's yelling,
- 50:27I was here.
- 50:27KARA: Yes.
- 50:27DANI: She's like, wow, that's kind
- 50:30of cool.
- 50:30KARA: It has nothing to do with the car wash.
- 50:32DANI: No. And John says.
- 50:32KARA: He just sees it as a nuisance.
- 50:36DANI: Well, yeah, he makes, like, a racially loaded
- 50:39comment.
- 50:39KARA: He does say, like, these people.
- 50:39DANI: These
- 50:42people ruin their own neighborhoods. And then
- 50:45they have to come and ruin ours, too.
- 50:45KARA: Yeah.
- 50:45DANI: Which
- 50:48is not great. But he is frustrated. And I think
- 50:52this is where I have a hard time being empathetic
- 50:55towards Bay. I think it's because I don't really
- 50:57have an appreciation for graffiti as art. Most
- 51:01of it. So I'm kind of like, yeah, to him, you
- 51:04did just sort of deface his business.
- 51:04KARA: It doesn't
- 51:08have anything to do with the car wash or the
- 51:10car wash logos. It doesn't -
- 51:10DANI: I just feel like
- 51:14he - he's such a supportive parent who's well
- 51:17-meaning and just like fucks up because he like
- 51:20doesn't know. Like with Toby's music stuff and
- 51:22so I feel like if Bay was - obviously she can't
- 51:25tell her parents that she's doing illegal street
- 51:26art.
- 51:26KARA: No.
- 51:26DANI: but I feel like if she was more honest
- 51:28about the type of art she was interested in doing
- 51:30or she asked John like, can I paint a mural on
- 51:33the car wash.
- 51:33KARA: He totally would.
- 51:33DANI: He would be so into that
- 51:37and supportive of it and so - it is like I see
- 51:41both sides.
- 51:41KARA: yeah.
- 51:41DANI: And even if he knew - if she had
- 51:45been like, well, I did that, I bet he would have
- 51:47been upset, but I bet he would not have painted
- 51:48over it. You know what I mean?
- 51:48KARA: I would paint
- 51:51over it. It's not that good.
- 51:51DANI: I know. I thought
- 51:52it was ugly, too. It's not her best work. Bay's
- 51:55had better pieces.
- 51:55KARA: Exactly.
- 51:55DANI: The birthday billboard
- 51:58is the best one so far.
- 51:58KARA: So the best one. And
- 52:00she didn't even do that.
- 52:00DANI: I know.
- 52:00KARA: But he doesn't
- 52:03know that. He goes, thank God you're here. You
- 52:05can help me paint over it.
- 52:05DANI: And then Bay is stuck.
- 52:08The last scene of the episode is her painting
- 52:11over the art. But first she sends a photo of
- 52:15it.
- 52:15KARA: To Zarra.
- 52:15DANI: To Zarra.
- 52:15KARA: Zarra apparently knows that
- 52:18that is a highly visible area. It's not clear
- 52:21in the photo.
- 52:21DANI: It's not clear. It's a close up.
- 52:23KARA: There's no location.
- 52:23DANI: And she's about to paint
- 52:24over it.
- 52:24KARA: Yeah. It's just a blue wall. Whatever.
- 52:27And Zarra's like, sick. Welcome to the crew.
- 52:27DANI: So
- 52:30Bay is joining a graffiti gang now.
- 52:30KARA: Yeah.
- 52:30DANI: That'll
- 52:34be fun.
- 52:34KARA: Welcome to the bad kids club.
- 52:34DANI: That'll
- 52:35be so fun.
- 52:35KARA: I feel like I'm watching Thirteen.
- 52:35DANI: Literally.
- 52:38KARA: That's it.
- 52:38DANI: I'm not feeling good about the direction
- 52:41that anyone is moving in right now in this show.
- 52:44I cannot.
- 52:44KARA: The Chef Jeff is really -
- 52:44DANI: And good for -
- 52:48the thing is, is like detached from Daphne. Good
- 52:51for Melody. You know, she wanted to get laid.
- 52:53She got laid. Happy for her. It's just like so
- 52:56gross in the context.
- 52:56KARA: I know.
- 52:56DANI: It's so icky.
- 52:56KARA: He's
- 53:01like a psychopath.
