- 0:19Hey there, I'm Hannah Liz, a coastal living,
- 0:22Jesus loving, NC native, and you're listening
- 0:24to the Living Freed Podcast. This podcast is
- 0:28for the girlies, the girlies who feel weighed
- 0:30down by the chains of the world or the chains
- 0:32of the legalism in their church, who want to
- 0:34walk free in the life they know God created for
- 0:36them, who want to heal their heart and heartbreak
- 0:39as into self -growth, wants to deepen her relationship
- 0:42with Jesus and build community. Today, we're
- 0:45going to be talking about pride versus confidence.
- 0:53gosh guys pride has been such an issue in my
- 0:55heart literally since I was a little kid when
- 0:58I was younger it physically hurt me to apologize
- 1:02like pulling teeth to admit that I was wrong
- 1:04I would do pretty much anything to appear as
- 1:07my best and I'd avoid not looking good any chance
- 1:12I could just like everybody else but genuinely
- 1:14like if it hurt my pride or how I appeared I
- 1:18just want to do it like if I wasn't gonna win
- 1:20the race I wasn't gonna run the race you know
- 1:22what I mean um I just I really yeah it no it
- 1:27wasn't for me that's all I'm gonna say apologizing
- 1:29anything that made me look bad any correction
- 1:31it wasn't for me as a kid Now, I will say though,
- 1:36even though I wouldn't do anything I knew I would
- 1:38lose at or I would avoid apologizing at all costs,
- 1:42I did love to be the center of attention. I love
- 1:44to put on a show and be at the front. I remember
- 1:47one time we lived in a house that had a basement
- 1:50and I locked one of my - I locked - my siblings
- 1:54in a closet in the basement while I stood in
- 1:57front of the door holding it closed with my body
- 1:59because it was my turn to perform for my for
- 2:02my parents. There's actually a whole video of
- 2:04me like i think i had to be like five or six
- 2:08shoving my body against the store while my two
- 2:10younger siblings are doing their best to fight
- 2:12to get out of it and i'm just standing there
- 2:14like singing a song about jesus but hey listen
- 2:17they had had their turn they were the opening
- 2:19act i was the closing act i waited my turn and
- 2:23now it was my time to shine and end the show
- 2:25with a bang okay so did i really need to keep
- 2:29them locked in the closet no But I had waited
- 2:31in the closet. So it was their turn to wait in
- 2:33the closet. Well, I, you know, gave the performance
- 2:36of my life. I really did love being the center
- 2:39of attention, though, like anything like it could
- 2:41be a play. I could it could be for my dance team.
- 2:44I wanted all the eyes on me. You put me at the
- 2:47front row. I was there. I was ready to lead.
- 2:49I was ready to show everyone the dance moves.
- 2:51I was ready to perform any line. And if I missed
- 2:53a line or step, well, you want to be able to
- 2:56tell me because me miss a line or step? Not even
- 2:59possible. As a kid though, people would tell
- 3:02my mom how prideful I was, like my teachers,
- 3:05my friend's parents. I remember my mom telling
- 3:07me this and at first I was really upset but then
- 3:10I also got really embarrassed. My mom did her
- 3:14absolute best though as I got older to really
- 3:16help me with it and I appreciate that. She put
- 3:18in like the actual hard work as a parent and
- 3:21I eventually like started to be really quick
- 3:23to apologize whether I was wrong or wasn't wrong.
- 3:27I made sure I wasn't on the front of the stage
- 3:31anymore. I took a back seat. I was careful with
- 3:34my words around adults. I stopped dressing like
- 3:38I needed to be the center of attention, like
- 3:39I was on a fashion show. And I learned to take
- 3:42criticism. Well, as I got older, eventually turned
- 3:46into feedback. You know, it happens with maturity.
- 3:49Was it an easy process? No. I would say for anything
- 3:51that I felt prideful about, it definitely got
- 3:54beaten out of me. Not physically. I kind of did
- 3:57it to myself. Like say I was prideful about one
- 4:00thing, I'd bring up two things to myself that
- 4:01I was insecure about to prove that I wasn't all
- 4:05that and a bag of chips. Because I spent a whole
- 4:06lot, I spent the majority of my childhood thinking
- 4:09I was all that and a bag of chips. I do remember
- 4:12though I got to a point where there was pretty
- 4:14much nothing left of me that felt that way about
- 4:16myself. um i did cheer when i was you know in
- 4:20my tweens to my teens i remember it was my first
- 4:24season as a cheerleader and my coach came up
- 4:26to me and told me she wanted me to be the head
- 4:28cheerleader and i asked her if she was sure because
- 4:30i definitely was not sure about myself at this
- 4:32point i remember i was trying to be at the bottom
- 4:34of the pyramid i was trying to be in the back
- 4:36of the group um and the problem with that is
- 4:40i'd gotten rid of all my pride but i also got
- 4:42rid of all of my confidence as a kid and it led
- 4:45to a long season in my life where I kind of just
- 4:48stopped speaking up for myself. I stopped standing
- 4:50up for others, much less standing up for myself.
- 4:53And I was always worried about what others thought
- 4:55of me, especially adults. Like every time I wore
- 4:59something that was just outside of the normal
- 5:01for our inner circle, I questioned it. If I was
- 5:05going to speak up on a subject that I was really
- 5:07passionate about, I just chose not to because
- 5:09I second guessed myself. I really second guessed
- 5:12everything about myself as a person, even in
- 5:15private. Like I would question myself on any
- 5:18choice that I made as I got into my teams because
- 5:20I just had lost any certainty that I'd had for
- 5:23myself. It took me years to learn to rebuild
- 5:26my confidence and in my mind keep my pride at
- 5:29bay because it felt like it was gonna be a never
- 5:31-ending struggle that I was gonna have to deal
- 5:33with. I became very aware that I wasn't confident
- 5:35anymore so I wanted to build it up but I also
- 5:38knew I couldn't let my pride get the best of
- 5:40me because I didn't want to have adults or am
- 5:43I honestly yeah adults. i didn't want to have
- 5:46adults speak about me in that way anymore. it
- 5:48became a big insecurity of mine and i didn't
- 5:51want to embarrass my family like my parents or
- 5:54myself in that way as i got older because i've
- 5:58met really prideful adults as a kid aka my dad
- 6:00and i was embarrassed about it so so i just knew
- 6:05i did not want to be that way when i became a
- 6:06grown up. in my early 20s though a different
- 6:09conversation was being had. something new had
- 6:11been spoken into me. and one of those conversations
- 6:13was had in one of my monthly meetings with my
- 6:16boss. We would typically go over our numbers
- 6:18and our goals and he mentioned to me one time
- 6:21that I was one of the most humble people he knew
- 6:23and I didn't know what to think about that because
- 6:25I had been telling myself at this point in my
- 6:27life the opposite for so long and I really sat
- 6:30and pondered it because I valued his opinion
- 6:33so much. I felt like he really saw me up until
- 6:36that point and I couldn't figure out why he thought
- 6:39I was humble when my whole life. I had told myself
- 6:42differently and I'd been told differently by
- 6:45others. So I ended up going home that day. I
- 6:48remember this very vividly. I ended up going
- 6:50home one day and I told my roommate who worked
- 6:53with me at the salon and she laughed. Like she
- 6:56actually laughed and said, well that's just not
- 6:58true. You are one of the most prideful people
- 7:01I know. Like truly. And I I'm not gonna lie,
- 7:07I was kind of butt hurt because I was kind of
- 7:10proud of myself. I was like, wow, I have made
- 7:12strides. I'm no longer a prideful person. People
- 7:15don't see me as a prideful person. And I was
- 7:17really excited that I felt like I had beat that
- 7:19side of me, beat that problem that I had had.
- 7:22And to be told that actually... I was one of
- 7:25the most prideful people someone knew really
- 7:27hurt. It really really hurt. I remember thinking
- 7:30oh my gosh like I need to fix this. So I sat
- 7:32on it for a long time because when people tell
- 7:35me things about myself, I really take it to heart
- 7:38and I want to work on those things. So I dwelled
- 7:41and thought on it for days and weeks and months
- 7:44and I'd have conversations about it with my friends.
- 7:47I remember one time I was at one of my favorite
- 7:48coffee shops in my hometown. It was basically
- 7:51my second home during my ever -going never -ending
- 7:53coffee addiction and I brought this topic up
- 7:56to one of my closest guy friends at the time.
- 7:58We had unspoken weekly coffee dates where we
- 8:01would talk about his school problems and all
- 8:03of my problems in general. He was one of those
- 8:05friends that would give me the hard truths and
- 8:07a few of my girlfriends would even ask me why
- 8:09I was friends with him because his hard truths
- 8:12were just that. They were hard, but I really
- 8:14valued his opinion. I was not ever into him in
- 8:18that way. I never saw him in a romantic way,
- 8:21but I knew he had a lot of qualities that I admired
- 8:24and I wanted to end up with someone who had similar
- 8:26qualities to him, so I listened to what he would
- 8:29say in hopes to grow into a person that someone
- 8:32with his character would want or look for, if
- 8:35that makes sense. As we sipped our coffee and
- 8:38I asked where he saw Pride of My Life show up,
- 8:40he looked me straight in the eyes and I remember
- 8:43like a deep breath and being ready to take the
- 8:45punch. I remember mentally, emotionally, and
- 8:48physically like preparing myself for what he
- 8:49was going to say so that I could, you know, write
- 8:52it down on my heart and be ready to work on it
- 8:54so that I could be the best version of myself.
- 8:56And as he looked me in the eyes and there was
- 8:58a moment of silence between us, he took a breath
- 9:01and he said, Hannah Drain, you are not prideful.
- 9:05You're one of the most humble girls I know. People
- 9:07mistake your confidence for pride. And y 'all,
- 9:11that's when my view shifted, because I learned
- 9:13something. Confidence looks like arrogance to
- 9:16unconfident people. Webster's Dictionary defines
- 9:19confidence as the quality or state of being certain,
- 9:22while Webster's Dictionary describes the word
- 9:24pride as the quality or state of being proud.
- 9:28Exaggerated self -esteem, ostentatious, or a
- 9:31showy display. I think it's pretty plain and
- 9:33simple. Pride's definition has so much more to
- 9:36say about itself, and it reminds me of the world
- 9:38around me. always trying to prove something,
- 9:41but confidence doesn't have to prove a thing,
- 9:44and it doesn't feel the need to. Today we see
- 9:46a lot of pride, self -centeredness, and arrogance.
- 9:49I scroll TikTok and Instagram a lot. Not as much
- 9:52as I used to, but definitely still way too much.
- 9:54And I see a lot of posts of how great others
- 9:56are, or bragging about what they have or have
- 9:59done. Often I don't give it a second thought,
- 10:01mostly I just you know, heart it and move on
- 10:04with my day. But I started to see it in a lot
- 10:07of conversations too. You know, it's one of those
- 10:09things like if you're shopping for a red car,
- 10:11you see them all over the road. When something
- 10:13kind of sits in your heart or in your head, you
- 10:15start to see it everywhere. I started to hear
- 10:17so much about, I did this, I said that, I bought
- 10:21this. Insert whatever you want because we've
- 10:23all been in a conversation like that. You're
- 10:25telling someone about a trip you took or a new
- 10:27restaurant you checked out and they find a way
- 10:29to make the conversation about them. I'll never
- 10:31forget this I was in a convo with a girl I was
- 10:34meeting for the first time she was a friend of
- 10:36a friend and we were just minutes into meeting
- 10:39when she started to tell me the most crazy friend
- 10:42story I've ever heard mind you brand new to Wilmington
- 10:45my friend tempted me to the beach she said let's
- 10:47go take cute photos it's one of the prettiest
- 10:49days we've had all winter and I was really trying
- 10:52to make friends with this girl so I was like
- 10:53yes I'll be there let's show up so I put on my
- 10:55cute beachy outfit she told me this friend was
- 10:57coming and oh boy did this friend show up she
- 11:00instantly started telling us how she slept with
- 11:03the guy her roommate asked her to stay away from
- 11:05because her roommate had had a crush on him.
- 11:08Well, this girl went out drinking with him and
- 11:10a group of other friends and brought him home
- 11:12and slept with him. And the roommate found out
- 11:15the next day when she woke up and he was leaving
- 11:18her house. That girl was saying, So the girl
- 11:21with us is telling me how her roommate had confronted
- 11:23her about it, but she told her roommate that
- 11:26all they did was sleep. They did not do the deed.
- 11:29but the roommate found out from the guy that
- 11:31her friend had lied. This girl continued to tell
- 11:34me how she couldn't understand how her roommate
- 11:36didn't want to be around her anymore because
- 11:38she didn't do anything wrong. It's not like her
- 11:41roommate was dating the guy. I was so shocked
- 11:43by her lack of awareness or accountability, whatever
- 11:46you want to call it. Y 'all, I didn't even try
- 11:48to correct this girl, because she didn't know
- 11:51girl code, or at the very least how to be a good
- 11:53friend, and put her own desires first over the
- 11:56heart of a friend. Trust me, there was no enlightening
- 11:59her on this one. The last time I really remember
- 12:02struggling with my pride was when I called off
- 12:04my engagement. I was so freaking worried about
- 12:06what everyone would think if they found out why
- 12:09we broke up. I was encouraged by my family and
- 12:11friends and pastors to tell others bluntly the
- 12:14truth, but instead I spent months avoiding answers
- 12:17and left all outside my closed circle in the
- 12:20dark. But it really shot me in the foot. People
- 12:22started to think I did something wrong, that
- 12:24I had messed up, and that's why it got called
- 12:27off. All because I was too embarrassed to say
- 12:29he chose to pursue a relationship with another
- 12:31woman while we were engaged. embarrassed to possibly
- 12:34give anyone the idea that I wasn't enough for
- 12:37him, or that I was dumb enough to get played
- 12:39in that way. Man, my pride really got me there.
- 12:43You know, pride is what got us here in the first
- 12:45place, separated from God. Adam and Eve being
- 12:48convinced that God was holding out on them, Satan
- 12:51and his pride wanted to be worshipped like God,
- 12:53and then he had to go and introduce the feeling
- 12:55of pride to Adam and Eve. Satan even tried to
- 12:58test Jesus with pride, but obviously he failed.
- 13:01Like, what a loser. To try and test God's confidence
- 13:04and test his pride, the all -knowing creator
- 13:07of you, me, and Satan? That's hilarious. God
- 13:11has actual words to say about pride. In 1 Samuel
- 13:1416 -7, we see him say to Samuel, Do not look
- 13:17on his appearance or on the height of his stature,
- 13:20because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees
- 13:23not as man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance,
- 13:26but the Lord looks on the heart. In Proverbs
- 13:2816, 18 it says, Pride goes before destruction
- 13:31and the haughty spirit before the fall. Then
- 13:34in Psalms 10, 4, In the pride of his face the
- 13:36wicked does not seek him. All his thoughts are,
- 13:39There is no God. Basically, pride hardens your
- 13:41heart towards God and I don't think that's a
- 13:43space I want to live in. There are so many Bible
- 13:46verses and stories of how pride is so obviously
- 13:48negative to you, your health, and your walk with
- 13:51Jesus. Let's have a real talk about how pride
- 13:54might show up in our lives. Pride is a heart
- 13:56problem and a head problem. It holds us back
- 13:59from living. I wish I could count on one hand
- 14:01the amount of times I avoided telling a whole
- 14:03story just to save face, but unfortunately, I
- 14:06cannot. Pride is what we place value in about
- 14:09ourselves. Some of us might be how we look. We
- 14:12might take pride in, compare ourselves to others
- 14:14based on our bodies, clothes, face, or hair,
- 14:17think to ourselves, thank god I don't look like
- 14:18that. Pride can cause us to lash out. It makes
- 14:21us want to be recognized, the need to prove something,
- 14:23that we are too good for serving others, or small
- 14:26jobs. or if you're Heyman in the book of Esther,
- 14:28it can get you killed because you don't see your
- 14:31heart clearly and you want too much that actually
- 14:33is not yours. I have friends that judge others
- 14:36for how long they've been single and say clearly
- 14:39something is wrong with them when me, Hannah
- 14:41Liz, their very chronically single friend is
- 14:43sitting right there next to them. So clearly
- 14:46they take pride in being in a relationship. And
- 14:48now I'm wondering if they think I'm weird for
- 14:50being single. You might be holding back for fear
- 14:53of sharing or showing a weak emotion, so you
- 14:55take pride in being strong. I know I used to.
- 14:58I would never cry in front of people. I was the
- 15:01strong sister, the cold sister, because I didn't
- 15:03let things bother me or hurt me. I had my emotions
- 15:06in check. The first few times I did finally break
- 15:09in front of people, I felt so weak and would
- 15:11curse myself about it later on. But now I cry
- 15:14what feels like all the time. And I don't care
- 15:17anymore if people have any thoughts or feelings
- 15:19about it. Ben Stortz says, pride is not a yearning
- 15:22for what you don't have, it's arrogance about
- 15:24what you do have. So maybe you're a braggart.
- 15:27You talk about where you're traveling to next,
- 15:29what new car you're going to get, the newest
- 15:31designer bag you just bought. And don't get me
- 15:33wrong, I love to talk about those things, but
- 15:35it's about where your heart is. Are you talking
- 15:38about it to make yourself feel cooler, or better
- 15:40in the conversation with the person you're talking
- 15:42to? Or are you sharing it out of true joy and
- 15:44excitement? I mean, it's fun to talk about those
- 15:46things, but if you're talking about it… to make
- 15:49a point or make yourself feel some type of way,
- 15:51then you need to take a closer look at that.
- 15:53I have friends that are prideful about their
- 15:55Christianity. It's, oh I serve in church, but
- 15:58I also know the pastor of this mega church and
- 16:00he gave me this XYZ compliment. And don't you
- 16:03think he's right? And oh boy, when that friend
- 16:05gets convicted about something, all of a sudden
- 16:07it's everyone else's problem too. And it's, they
- 16:10should really consider working on that. Because
- 16:12Sally stopped doing it or started doing whatever
- 16:15the hell it is and everyone should too, it really
- 16:18would help with their relationship and their
- 16:20life with Jesus. I'll be so real, that friendship
- 16:23keeps my pride in freaking check. Like regularly,
- 16:27I have to check my heart posture after talking
- 16:30with that friend. Whenever I find myself getting
- 16:32annoyed or judging how they're judging others,
- 16:35I know that irony. Or telling people how to live,
- 16:38I take a moment I pray over my heart and sometimes
- 16:41send a quick text to my bestie to be praying
- 16:44over my heart as well before I let my thoughts
- 16:47spiral about whatever the latest thing they said
- 16:50or did. And sometimes if it's in text, I have
- 16:52to just put my phone down and walk away while
- 16:54I take a couple deep breaths. Oh my gosh, I also,
- 16:58y 'all, I knew this guy who was like fake humble.
- 17:02I mean truly fake humble. He would walk around
- 17:05all sad like freaking Eeyore from Winnie the
- 17:08Pooh and could never take a compliment. You would
- 17:11tell him like, oh, you did a really good job
- 17:12on that. And he'd be like, oh, thanks, you know,
- 17:15it was all really Jesus. It has nothing to do
- 17:18with me. But then behind closed doors, he would
- 17:21brag about how humble he was, like actually brag
- 17:24about his humility. OMG, it drove me nuts. As
- 17:29soon as I saw through the BS, which I'm not going
- 17:31to lie, it took me a while to see through the
- 17:33BS. But once I did, oh, I couldn't even stand
- 17:37to look at him. It's like, you know, when you
- 17:39get the ick. I got the ick. Okay, but the Bible
- 17:42has a lot to say about confidence, too, though,
- 17:45but it all leads to the same place. In Hebrews
- 17:4710 verses 35 -6, it says, Basically saying, living
- 18:08righteously will bring boldness, which will have
- 18:10us naturally live confident. You know who was
- 18:13known by God, by name, for living righteously?
- 18:16That led to his boldness and his confidence,
- 18:19not just in his God, but in his own character
- 18:22as well? Job. Job knew himself. In his actions,
- 18:27in his heart's dance. So well, and was so confident
- 18:31in it, that when his friends, his closest besties,
- 18:34told him he clearly did something wrong and sinful
- 18:37in God's eyes and that's why he was being punished,
- 18:40he was able to say to himself and his friends
- 18:43how wrong they were. Like gosh, think how powerful
- 18:46that is. Psalm 139, 13 -14 says, So you're telling
- 19:00me I get to just walk around this earth knowing
- 19:03God formed me, knitted me together, heart, soul,
- 19:06and body, and you want us to go walking around
- 19:09instead in pride that is a false confidence and
- 19:12a true insecurity, trying to make myself feel
- 19:14better than others, smarter than others, worth
- 19:17more than others, to what purpose and what end?
- 19:20Instead, we're going to continue to walk around
- 19:22this earth knowing we were formed, thought of,
- 19:26and knitted together by confidence, and with
- 19:28confidence, knowing we have nothing to prove
- 19:31to anyone around us and loved by our Father.
- 19:34Now, you don't become confident overnight. I
- 19:37certainly did not. It took years of personal
- 19:40work. Think about David from the Bible. He didn't
- 19:43just face Goliath before facing lions and bears,
- 19:45and low -key, probably the torment of his brothers.
- 19:48Let's be so for real. Anyone who has a brother
- 19:51knows what I'm talking about. Those boys are
- 19:54next level. I mean, I cannot tell you the amount
- 19:57of times I was held down while one dangled a
- 20:00loogie over my face. If you know what I'm talking
- 20:03about, you know my pain, okay? One time, I was
- 20:06quote unquote asleep in my room and my brothers
- 20:09went outside the house to make animal noises
- 20:11scratching on the walls to make me think a giant
- 20:14animal was outside trying to get in and get me.
- 20:16Crazy. oh my gosh and another time actually my
- 20:20brother got into so much trouble but another
- 20:22time we had this attic door that would open up
- 20:25by itself because of i don't know circulation
- 20:28and pressure depending on the time of season
- 20:30and he told me that a ghost was coming to get
- 20:33me i happened to be 12 and in that moment he
- 20:35did ask me how old i was and when i said 12 he
- 20:38goes That's terrible. This ghost only goes after
- 20:4112 year olds. That's why we keep moving. Mom
- 20:43and dad have been trying to protect you guys,
- 20:45but it's here now and it's too late. Needless
- 20:48to say, I did not sleep that night and my parents
- 20:51definitely made him sleep with me until I got
- 20:53past my fear of the fake ghost. Okay, sorry,
- 20:56not to get too sidetracked. Anyways, you have
- 20:58to take on small battles within yourself. Fight
- 21:01and change your mind trash. Maybe it's comparing
- 21:03yourself to others or speaking harshly to yourself.
- 21:06Ask yourself why. Process your why, and then
- 21:09find a healthy way to reframe that thought. From
- 21:12thoughts, then start to speak it out loud over
- 21:15yourself. Because words are powerful, God will
- 21:17give you confidence when we don't rely on our
- 21:19own personal strengths. Put our values in our
- 21:22strengths or what people think of us. When we
- 21:25have confidence, we are not scared of new challenges.
- 21:27Because we don't hold our value or compare it
- 21:30to one or anything, we will lose the fear of
- 21:33losing it. I want you to take some time this
- 21:34week and do some inward reflecting. Look at where
- 21:37your pride is, where are you placing it, or what
- 21:39is it? Then find out the why, and let's hold
- 21:42it captive, meditate on it, find scripture to
- 21:44read over it, journal about it, or write on it.
- 21:47You can write it down and then tear that paper
- 21:49so we can tear the chains of pride that are holding
- 21:51us down and work on our confidence. If you have
- 21:54a trusted best friend, then let them know the
- 21:56challenge you're taking on. Someone you trust
- 21:58to know your fears. Someone you trust to point
- 22:01out your pride if you can't see it in yourself.
- 22:04Someone you trust to speak confidence and boldness
- 22:07into you. For example, Queen Esther wasn't bold
- 22:10or confident or even a queen overnight. She had
- 22:13Mordecai speaking truth and boldness into her.
- 22:16He also called her out and told her reality,
- 22:18and I think you need someone you trust to do
- 22:20the same for you. So what does confidence look
- 22:22like? For me, it was learning to be bold in my
- 22:25truth. I was and have always been honest with
- 22:27who I am. I've always shown up the same, for
- 22:30the most part, from my core. Obviously, things
- 22:33used to shape or shift from group to group when
- 22:36I was younger, but my core of who I am stayed
- 22:38the same, but I've learned to be bold with my
- 22:41truths and with myself. I don't hide anything
- 22:43from my peers in fear of their opinion or judgment,
- 22:45to think I'm of less value, because my value
- 22:48isn't found in that anymore. I can't be pulled
- 22:50down by others' thoughts of me because my value
- 22:53is found in my character and who God called me
- 22:55to be. As long as I'm aligned with that, then
- 22:58there is where I'll find my confidence. I don't
- 23:00avoid truths anymore. I speak truths no matter
- 23:03how it might affect someone's opinion of me.
- 23:05If someone makes me second -guess or doubt myself,
- 23:07I take a beat to dive deeper as to why. I process
- 23:10it now, and depending on the outcome, I'll either
- 23:13proceed or change course, whether I'm comfortable
- 23:16or not, because I have to be uncomfortable to
- 23:19grow out. When you find your pride, find your
- 23:21why to your pride. Break the chains of your pride
- 23:24by finding the character value God has knitted
- 23:27into you. And let's take small steps up and into
- 23:30your confidence. Y 'all, let's be so honest.
- 23:34Isn't it so much more fun to be around a confident
- 23:36girlie than an insecure one parading around with
- 23:39pride as a false confidence? Have you ever been
- 23:42in a bar bathroom, if you're old enough, and
- 23:45you have that pretty girl looking at you sideways
- 23:47in the mirror giving you that up and down look?
- 23:50You know the look I'm talking about and instantly
- 23:52you wonder if something is wrong with your makeup,
- 23:55maybe your lipstick is on your teeth, possibly
- 23:58your outfit actually doesn't look good on you
- 24:01or as good on you as you thought, or Maybe the
- 24:04toilet paper followed you out from the stall
- 24:06and you didn't notice, so you check under your
- 24:08shoe and there's nothing there and you're thinking,
- 24:10what is up with this girl? Why is she looking
- 24:12at me like that? Then you have the other girl,
- 24:15the girl who lights up when she makes eye contact
- 24:17with you when she walks in, instantly tells you
- 24:20how good you look or that she'd die for your
- 24:22shoes and y 'all end up spending an extra 20
- 24:24minutes in the bathroom fixing each other's makeup
- 24:26or talking about your exes, and it's decided
- 24:29that you both were way too good for them in the
- 24:30first place. The girls that walk around with
- 24:32pride treat doing life with you as a competition.
- 24:36You never really feel like they have your back,
- 24:38actually mean their compliments, or produce any
- 24:40fruit in your friendship. First is the confident
- 24:42ones are always in your corner lifting each other
- 24:45up, have you feeling loved and cheered on, excited
- 24:47for new challenges, and ready to take on the
- 24:50world. Which girl do you want to be? Which girl
- 24:52are you? How are you showing up? How do you want
- 24:55to be showing up? And how are you getting there?
- 24:58I once heard it said, and I can't remember by
- 25:00who, but I wrote it down in one of my little
- 25:03side tabs in my Bible next to first John. And
- 25:06it said, a change of head can have a change of
- 25:09heart, and a change of heart will have a change
- 25:11of action. So how do we become confident? Well,
- 25:14let's start with our head. Let's change our head.
- 25:17And eventually, you'll change your heart. And
- 25:19when you change your heart, it will show up through
- 25:20your actions. Let's pray. Father, thank you so
- 25:24much for anyone who's listening to this. I ask
- 25:26that you set them free from their pride, whatever
- 25:29pride is holding them down, from whatever pride
- 25:31is allowing them to live freely in you and their
- 25:34confidence in you. Wherever they're placing their
- 25:36value, wherever their insecurities might be sitting,
- 25:39ask that you free them of it. Show it to them.
- 25:42Have them become familiar with it, but have them
- 25:44release it and live for you. Live their life
- 25:47for you and be a light in this world. In Jesus
- 25:50name, Amen. Alright, that's all I have for today.
