Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Those thoughts of being less than, those thoughts of being ugly,
- 0:06Speaker 1: those thoughts of being not worthy, are only thoughts, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: you can change those thoughts.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Because as I started changing myself, as I started fixing
- 0:28Speaker 2: what was broken inside of me, I realized that the
- 0:32Speaker 2: majority of it came from society's programming. You might think,
- 0:39Speaker 2: You might think that I'm saying my parents did something wrong,
- 0:42Speaker 2: and I'm not. They did the best they could with
- 0:46Speaker 2: the knowledge they had based on their societal programming. It's
- 0:54Speaker 2: time to break the cycle. Yes, yes, parents, welcome to
- 1:04Speaker 2: parents Talk. We just want you to know you need
- 1:10Speaker 2: to be careful what you say to your children. My
- 1:16Speaker 2: friend Joanne Duftin is going to tell you a little
- 1:19Speaker 2: story to demonstrate this point. Joe Anne, can you tell
- 1:25Speaker 2: us how your mother made you feel when you were
- 1:29Speaker 2: growing up?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Please. I was about eleven and we went to visit
- 1:33Speaker 1: my grandmother and a prior babysitter was walking down the street.
- 1:40Speaker 1: She was about seventeen. My mother took one look at
- 1:44Speaker 1: her and this face. Ah, look at her againancasting look
- 1:50Speaker 1: at those whiteheads. That's awful. Two years later, when I
- 1:57Speaker 1: looked in the mirror and saw my own pimples, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: didn't want to ever have that expression from my mother,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and so I got in the mirror and I poked
- 2:08Speaker 1: and I poked. Unfortunately it didn't work. I went into
- 2:14Speaker 1: the room where my mother was sitting and she gave
- 2:17Speaker 1: me that same look. That look followed me for years.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I remember two or three years later, a young boy
- 2:28Speaker 1: came up to me and said, you're pretty. And I
- 2:31Speaker 1: remember thinking, are you blind? If my own mother thinks
- 2:37Speaker 1: I'm disgusting, how can I possibly believe that anyone else
- 2:43Speaker 1: would think that I was attractive?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Wow? What a story?
- 2:49Speaker 1: What a story. I had a problem with that until
- 2:54Speaker 1: I was sixty. Sixty sixty, after my husband died, I
- 3:04Speaker 1: picked up a book by Alex Lloyd called The Healing Code,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and one of the chapters talked about phrases that you
- 3:17Speaker 1: would say to yourself. And I remember when I said
- 3:20Speaker 1: to myself, as my heart heals, I am learning to
- 3:24Speaker 1: believe that I am worthy, that I have value, and
- 3:29Speaker 1: that I can love myself for who I am. That
- 3:35Speaker 1: saying that to myself spoke to my whole body, spoke
- 3:40Speaker 1: to my soul, spoke to my spirit. As a parent,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I don't want you to go through sixty years of
- 3:51Speaker 1: feeling that way. And I know you don't want your
- 3:56Speaker 1: children to go through any time feeling that way way,
- 4:01Speaker 1: So let them know that those thoughts of being less than,
- 4:06Speaker 1: those thoughts of being ugly, those thoughts of being not worthy,
- 4:11Speaker 1: are only thoughts, and you can change those thoughts. Pick
- 4:18Speaker 1: up this book. I like the way he describes it.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He has you directing energy to various parts of your
- 4:25Speaker 1: face as you say those sentences. He initially says, only
- 4:31Speaker 1: do it five minutes, three times a day. Well, my
- 4:34Speaker 1: husband had just died. What did I have to do?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Accept that? And it felt so good that I kept
- 4:42Speaker 1: doing it. I remember two or three nights in a
- 4:45Speaker 1: row I'd be saying it, maybe for an hour at
- 4:47Speaker 1: a time, as I directed energy towards these various areas.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I had debilitating shyness. I always wanted to hide in
- 4:57Speaker 1: a corner. Maybe I could be invisible. Now I'm a
- 5:01Speaker 1: public speaker, and.
- 5:02Speaker 2: A good one too. Wasn't that a great story?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Now?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Parents, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could grow strong,
- 5:14Speaker 2: confident children today rather than fits, broken adults later. The
- 5:21Speaker 2: Confidence Club for Kids will give your kids tools and
- 5:27Speaker 2: resources to grow up strong and confident today, ye,
