- 1:15Marlowe. The original air date is May the seventh of nineteen forty nine,
- 1:21and the title is The Feminine Touch and Iron Skull was that trademark. That
- 1:26business was climbing walls, and it was all done on wheels at seventy miles
- 1:29an hour. But that was a cinch for the death Cheetahs until they felt
- 1:33murder. And a Feminine Touch. From the pen of Raymond Chandler, upstanding
- 1:38author of crime fiction, comes his most famous character in the Adventures of Philip
- 1:44Marlowe now with Gerald Moore starred as Philip Marlowe. We bring you tonight's s
- 1:57exciting story have a Don't Touch. It was five minutes to five when I
- 2:15turned off Sunset Boulevard and drove between the two wrought iron gates set in a
- 2:19stone wall that hinted none too subtly at the exclusiveness of the bel Air estates.
- 2:23I followed a gently curving street bordered by dignified rows of meticulously manicured palm
- 2:29trees as far as number forty four twelve. There I turned out to a
- 2:32white driveway, motored over an acre of rigidly disciplined landscape to a house that
- 2:38could have doubled for Buckingham Palace, where I ground to a soft stop and
- 2:42got out. Bell Air was the soul of peace and serenity until I started
- 2:46across the drive to the front door. A motorcycle jet propelled by a black
- 2:54haired lunatic in a leather jacket with a blonde beauty riding behind him, missed,
- 3:00goring me by inches. I picked myself up, mumbled a few choice
- 3:04words, and went out of the door. I followed a butler through the
- 3:07house to an aviary in the rear, where my client, mister bald and
- 3:09Granville put it with a flock of exotic birds in a big wire cage.
- 3:14He looks right at home. A penguin in sport clothes with the yellow stearing
- 3:19eyes of an owl. Come in, Marlowe, but we'll watch the gates
- 3:22the first all upset? Did you hear that mechanical outburst? A moment ago
- 3:28heard? I was almost run over by it. A jerk and a batty
- 3:30blonde dame on a motorcycle. Who are they? And the driver was,
- 3:34no doubt one Pepper Rigs, which is all I know about him. However,
- 3:38the batsy blonde, as you put it, is my daughter, Adrian,
- 3:40how your daughter? Yes, it's twenty three and already out of school
- 3:44two years, and the best schools, of course, and still it's been
- 3:47one crazy scrape after another. Now it's motorcycles and something even worse. I'm
- 3:53afraid that's why I called you. Now, look, mister Grenville, I
- 3:57no truant officer, have you? And her mother tried simply talking it over
- 4:00with it? We lost her mother in thirty three, and Adrian refuses flatly
- 4:04to discuss things with me. I've tried everything from bribery to threats. How
- 4:09about trying to be a father. I'm twenty years late for that. Always
- 4:13been too busy making money. Now I'm worried. I think she's infatuated with
- 4:18this pepper Rigs. Well, there isn't much I can do about that.
- 4:23She wants to break her neck on a motorcycle. I can't do much about
- 4:25that either. You can do something about this. It came to me in
- 4:29this morning's may Adrian hasn't seen the kid. Oh keep your daughter out of
- 4:34our hair. Make her layoff, pepper Rigs. If you know what's good
- 4:40for her, I mean it. Lou Brian. Who's lou Brian? I
- 4:44have no idea, but Adrian's in danger. Marlowe, Well, I'll do
- 4:48what I can. Had anything else to go on beside two names the motorcycle
- 4:51crowd. No, now, that's all. But marlow listen, it may
- 4:57sound strange to you, but everything I've worked for all my life means nothing
- 5:02to me. Now. I finally realized that Adrian is all that really matters.
- 5:10Don't let me down. Something close to grief glistening in the old man's
- 5:14yellow eyes, But he hardened up again while we settled the matter of my
- 5:17feet one hundred bucks, and then he hurried me on my way. I
- 5:21think it Pepper Rigs was a wild man, so my first step was a
- 5:25check off of the La dirt track circuit, a wild man's game if there
- 5:28was one. The full stop I made paid off. A track manager told
- 5:31me that Pepper was a used to be bike racer all right, but that
- 5:34he quit and was while working at the Redondo Amusement Pier as a wall climber.
- 5:39When I found out what that was, it made the dirt track routine
- 5:42sound about as dangerous as an old lady's culling bee. It was nine thirty
- 5:46when I got out to the Redondo Pier. Wandered through the concessions until I
- 5:48found one with a corny label, a wall of Death. It looked like
- 5:54a barrel thirty feet in diameter and twenty feet high, with a grand stand
- 5:58over it and a picture poster in front listing hair raising shows eight ten and
- 6:01twelve PM featuring Pepper Riggs, the depth Cheater, the lovely Mickey North,
- 6:06and smiling Lou Bryant, the one who had written a letter to my client.
- 6:12Whatever Adrian Granville was mixed up and the answer was here. I walked
- 6:15around the big barrel. It was shed in the rear. A light was
- 6:18on, so I went to work. Hi looking for somebody. Yeah,
- 6:24yeah, you're Pepper Rigs, aren't you. My name is Malo of High
- 6:27Spot Magazine. I've got a feature lined up on your act, spare man.
- 6:30Sure we can talk while I finished shaving. Shoot, how fast do
- 6:33your traveler on that wall flip on the sixty in your drop? It's no
- 6:36life for sissies, buddy, And a little thing goes wrong up there on
- 6:40the wall and it's curtains figures. Is your bike here? Yeah, the
- 6:43one with my name played on it? There? Uh huh? I see
- 6:46you carry a little iron skull tide of the handle buzz kind of grim,
- 6:48isn't it my trade? My buddy knocked off the wall seven times in the
- 6:53last three years and beat OL's skull face every time. No kidding. It
- 6:57makes for a nice quiet future for your fiance. Yeah yeah, miss Grenville,
- 7:02I'm going to take her into the act with you. Could be,
- 7:05buddy, could be? What do your partners think of that? The girl?
- 7:10Mickey North and Lou Bryan I mean, is it gonna be room for
- 7:12everybody? You know something, Pale. I don't think there is a magazine
- 7:15called high Spot. Really, I better make a note of it. Yeah,
- 7:20Adrian warned me a role man be sending a private eye around. So
- 7:24now that I've cut your act and it's corny, I've got a message for
- 7:26you. Lay off because Adrian's old enough to know what she wants. Okay,
- 7:30And I've got one for you, Screwball, say that she lives long
- 7:33enough to enjoy it. When you shove me out the door. My first
- 7:44impulse was to shove back in again, but then I heard the spiel till
- 7:46the ten o'clock shows starting out in front, so I decided Tepa Riggs would
- 7:49keep. I walked around the drone to where a red faced Balka lashed the
- 7:53pot with every known similar for dangerousy whipped up excitement for the act. I
- 7:57stepped up close to listen, and absolutely better go ball. Just Hardley's Wallad.
- 8:03Don't quit, said folks. Show starts in fifteen minutes. Come in
- 8:05and watch them. Gret Hey, Sam, they go for me. Clar
- 8:09Robert, you weren't filled when the red face boxer stopped. His eyes had
- 8:11been fixed on the little man and grimy Overalls hurrying across the midway. He
- 8:16jumped down from the platform and ran after the little guy. So I pushed
- 8:18back through the crowd and followed him. A red face caught up with the
- 8:22grimy overalls at a hot dog stand, grabbed him by one shoulder and spun
- 8:24him around. Hey what do you and I want to talk to you.
- 8:28Oh you're a motorcycle mechanical, a Promenada. Why are you been I slept
- 8:33in, I guess, mister Hadley. Yeah, you must have been real
- 8:35tired after last night. Last night, What what do you mean? Don't
- 8:39start with in the moon. I saw you coming out of the bike shed
- 8:43at two thirty in the morning. Oh you're doing it there at that hour,
- 8:46calling over the bikes. I'm sick and tired of taking a blank for
- 8:48a little Brian. He's holding back. He says it's because his bike ate
- 8:52right, But that's not true. He's turned yellow. That's what I'll promat.
- 8:56He'd kind of talk to yourself. Oh but it's true. Pepper told
- 9:00the same thing. Lou Bryant's lost his nerve and he's holding back those bikes
- 9:03are identical, same making, same model. They're both in tip top shape.
- 9:05And I'm through taking a blame for a guy that's turned yellow. What
- 9:07do you have, man, want something jezz Yeah, a couple of coffees?
- 9:11But you, mister, yeah a hot dog? Nothing on it?
- 9:13Yeah? Sure, right up and listen. Moon, you're a good mechanic
- 9:18and I want to fire, but there's public cooking around my show and I
- 9:20don't like it. Here you are, Oh thanks, Oh sure, sure,
- 9:24there's going to be troubled. You're blaming me, but you ought to
- 9:26blame that dizzy blonde that taps mixed up with that Adrian Grenville. She's the
- 9:30date. How are you biggures? Ah, this is private conversation. What
- 9:35are you tuning in for? That's a musted little man, And keep your
- 9:37greasy thumb out of it. You got secrets. You're to know better than
- 9:41to broadcasting. Yeah, thanks for the advice. Yeah, go soak your
- 9:46head in it. Skip the coffee. But your place is crawling. So
- 9:50long figures. I watched Jess Headley and Moon walk away, and then I
- 9:56went back to the Wall of Death, boarded ticket and climb the stairs the
- 10:00gallery at the top of the thirty foot motordrome. Houselights were on, but
- 10:03in a half dockments. At the bottom of the big bowl, I saw
- 10:05three motorcycles in the open trap door. The gallery was nearly full. It
- 10:09only took one glance around the ring of faces at the lip of the bowl.
- 10:13The spotter. She had insolent eyes, wide, soft red mouth,
- 10:16and her hair tumbled in loose blond waves over the shoulders, a shimmering white
- 10:22silk shirt, very wide open at her throat. I moved up beside her
- 10:26and leaned on the rail. Why don't you go home? I'm sure like
- 10:31I can't use a watchdog. You flatter yourself, Adrian. I'm here only
- 10:35the case of setup that includes your broken neck. That's just another item in
- 10:39my report, is that right? M Well you're pretty so I'll make it
- 10:43really set up simply this. I like to go fast motorcycles. Do that
- 10:50corn sodas pepper? Right? That satisfy you? Not quite? You got
- 10:56the curves, baby, but somebody else has the angles. Meaning what all
- 11:01these professionals might resent an amateur moving in? What makes you think I'm an
- 11:05amateur, mister Marlowe, I'll compete with dear little Mickey North on any basis,
- 11:11curves or angle. I got Pepper didn't die, and I'll have her
- 11:15stop on the show if I want. I was always set with lou Bryan
- 11:20blows access baggage, but strictly Pepper's been carrying the whole shell for a week
- 11:24if I go to house links. So it's been nice, Sherlock. But
- 11:28that makes it time to run along, doesn't it. Oh? I think
- 11:31I'll stick around, honey. Whether you like it or not, suit yourself,
- 11:35but don't stick too close you might get run over. When a flood
- 11:39light over the center of the drone flashed on and filled the deep bowl with
- 11:43a dead white player, the Fomas climbs through the trap door and the bottom
- 11:46closed it behind them and mounted their bikes. For the first rower of the
- 11:48motors, Adrian and gripped the railing and is teared down, her eyes glistening
- 11:52with fascination upon this seventy miles an hour on a vertical wall. Sorry,
- 12:03come on, Rigg'd lovely making off and smiling little Brian. It was low.
- 12:09Brian let off, starting slowly at first, around and around the sloping
- 12:13base of the bowl. Peppa Riggs watched him for a moment and looked up,
- 12:16waved at Adrian and grin while Mickey Nord flied swayed ahead. There was
- 12:18no smile and smiling Lublian's face either, as a world passed her and past
- 12:22her around the drone. The hole began to tremble with every revolution, and
- 12:26the speeding motorcycles raced over the boards and rose higher and higher on the political
- 12:30wall, until finally it was only five feet from the ring. Then suddenly,
- 12:33from somewhere a black smith failed out on the white under the tires,
- 12:37a smooth that grew with every turn. It was oil, that's talking.
- 12:39Later what happened? The black wheel spitted, the bike swim out of blue
- 12:41lions ptole at the coping ride and on it fell overlong folks come, I
- 12:52brick up O'Brien was dead long before they got him through the trap door and
- 12:56into the ambulance. And watching him full I put a freeze on my mind
- 13:00that took twenty minutes tawing out. But when the fundamentals of a edition went
- 13:03to work again, I started looking around and just in time to see Moon
- 13:07the mechanic barreling in nineteen thirty five for all it was worth out of the
- 13:11parking light and heading for the highway lights out. I ran in my car,
- 13:13piled in the take after him with something long and yellow smashed into my
- 13:16bumper. You took the words right out of my mouth, Adrian. Yeah,
- 13:22timed it perfectly, didn't you time? What perfect good block? So
- 13:26Moon your grease monkey assistant could put a few miles behind it, Adrian,
- 13:30what happened, Marlow? Yeah, don't worry, rigs Adrian here did a
- 13:33lovely job. A bumper's abraided. But and I'm getting a little sick of
- 13:37you, Marlow'll liably get sick of Speede because I'm going to find out exactly
- 13:41why Lou Bryan died tonight. You're gonna answer some questions. He died to
- 13:43cut the oil line broke. Yeah, it happens all the time to wall
- 13:46climbers. It was a tough break, that's all. Oh sure, sure?
- 13:50Now, Look, just in case you two didn't know, Lou Bryan
- 13:52objected to you, Adrian, so much so, in fact, that he
- 13:54wrote a letter to your father threatening to rock you up if he didn't lay
- 13:56off where I said. Somebody beat him to punch yues who listen Marley,
- 14:01you're running off at the mouth. You've got something to say, Say it
- 14:03right off like a big boy. Okay, Riggs Lubryan's death was no accident.
- 14:09It was cold premeditated murder. Tie that on your handle bar's death,
- 14:13cheater in just a moment, the second act of Philip Marlowe. But first,
- 14:33the greatest jackpot on the history of radio. Fifty four thousand dollars in
- 14:37prizes and cash awaits the CBS listener who can solve the mystery of the Phatom
- 14:41Boys on our Saturday Night Singing Again show twenty five thousand dollars maybe yours in

- 14:52splendid smaller prizes waiting for you, listeners who can crack the riddle song.
- 14:56So be around for Singing Again tonight when it comes to you for a full
- 15:00hour on most of these same CBS Network stations. Now, with our star
- 15:05Gerald Moore, we returned to the second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story
- 15:09the Feminine Touch. I turned without another word and walked away slowly until I
- 15:24was out of sight, and I ran for the Drome on the off chance
- 15:28that I could find Mickey North and the lead on Moon. I found her
- 15:31alone and on a bench in an almost dark, out of the way corner
- 15:33of an amusement peer half watching a couple of hungry seagulls who didn't know when
- 15:39it was time to go to bed. Circle overhead. I introduced myself and
- 15:43got around to what was fast becoming my only point, the hunch that lou
- 15:46Bryan's crackup was no accident. I can't believe that, Marlow. Why not,
- 15:50Mickey heads lou Brian figgured Adrian was breaking up a great act. They
- 15:56gets you driven a wedge between him and Pepper, and Pepper and Nu.
- 16:00Yeah, but that's not reason enough for Adrian to Pepper to kill lou Marlow.
- 16:07Oh but it's lonesome. No, but there was more, Mickey.
- 16:11Lou Brian didn't intend to take all this lying down. For one thing,
- 16:14he sent a threatening let at Adrian's father to keep her away. And Marlow.
- 16:18You're saying that Adrian and Pepper rays scheduled an accident for lou Bryan,
- 16:22and then Mickey does Moon. You know he shoved off without so much as
- 16:26I'll be back in a minute, right after Luke cracked up. Tell me,
- 16:29Mickey, do you have any idea why Moon could have been heading he
- 16:32was pointing away from La No, I don't, except, of course,
- 16:36his own place. He has a little shack on Ocean Avenue, number forty
- 16:38one, over in the oil fields. But look, Marlow, maybe Moon's
- 16:42responsible for everything he and Lou didn't get along, you know, Yes,
- 16:47I've heard, also, Mickey, I've heard that Moon was around the bike's
- 16:49unusually late last night. What Moon, ron? Oh, it must have
- 16:55been Moon and alone? Sure? What's the matter with me? Pepper wouldn't
- 16:59do a thing like that. He's too good, too decent a night suck
- 17:03still love them? Don't you make it? No? I don't. He
- 17:07means nothing, Mama. All right, honey, let's call it a tie
- 17:11for the moment. It's Moon alone or the triumvir at Moon, Rigs and
- 17:14Adrian Grenville. Right, yeah, I guess nobody else had me reason to
- 17:18kill Lou. If you're sure that's what happened, are Yamama dead? Sure?
- 17:25Just about Ask me again, honey, after I've checked the fireside at
- 17:29number forty one Ocean Avenue. But then I may know more. When I
- 17:40got back to my car, it reads convertible was gone, and the pleading
- 17:42that had been my right fender, which said that she'd left in a hurry,
- 17:45cost me ten minutes of stress and strain before my front wheels would turn
- 17:48in either direction without chewing rubber, and I was another ten getting to the
- 17:52intersection of US one oh one at Ocean Avenue, which turned out to be
- 17:56a paved semi circle of grime twisting in between a knodding oil well pumps that
- 18:00had never heard of the eight hour day. I got out of my car
- 18:03and started to move quietly toward the second collection of scrap lumber, unpainted and
- 18:07unpleasant that was number forty one. From a sudden splash of a pair of
- 18:12headlights sweeping my way fast and me sprawling to cover without so much as a
- 18:15reason why. I was glad that I'd had because it was yellow, long
- 18:22and convertible and behind the wheel and alone, Miss Adrian Granville. I took
- 18:30that as my cue to stop slooping and start worrying about a guy named Moon.
- 18:33I moved up to his shack in a hurry when it showed no light
- 18:37and no answer to my loud knock. I closed, one hand tied around
- 18:38the thirty eight in my pocket, and the other over the knob on the
- 18:41door, which wasn't locked. Inside there was only a shabby furniture of a
- 18:45Scotland onlium in the middle of the wall. Opposite me, another door half
- 18:49open. I started forritten what I could almost feel was going to be the
- 18:52too quiet form of the elusive mechanic, and a sound behind me that was
- 18:56not the work of the wind brought me to a dead stop. Move one
- 19:00inch, mister, and I'll kill you. And to think I was worrying
- 19:03about your health. You shouldn't have bothered. I feel fine, but you
- 19:07won't. If there's any monkey business, I'll drop your gun. Come on
- 19:11past. That's better. Now what are you doing here wondering why you were
- 19:17dumb enough to let that Grandville brat talking and a murdering lou Bryan for a
- 19:19price. You're off your rock. I fell. I didn't drop Brian.
- 19:22I got no money from the baby. The only gab gab that kept me
- 19:25from packing and getting out of here. That's a lie. I've got a
- 19:29photost out of a check for ten thousand that's made out to you and signed
- 19:32by Adrian Granville. It's un on a light buster to look for yourself check
- 19:36for ten grand. Yeah, I don't figure how my name could get up.
- 19:40Hey, they say no check. Oh my mistake here it is okay,
- 19:47okay, don't get out again. I'll tell you the truth. Dollars
- 19:48huh, we'll see first verse. He didn't kill Brian while you're running because
- 19:52lou and I didn't get along, and just hardly knows that I was around
- 19:56the bikes last night. So so sometimes people start putting things together too fast.
- 20:00You gets other people in trouble. I know it's happened to me for
- 20:02four or five years, once on a losty frame. How unfortunately? What
- 20:04about Adrian Grant? But what she want with you moaning? I don't know
- 20:07unless she belongs to the lady's handkerchief I found near the bikes last night.
- 20:11Did you say it was hers? We didn't get that far she ran off.
- 20:15Well, we heard your cart turn off from the highway. That's how
- 20:17come I got to drop on you. It figures. But what doesn't figure,
- 20:19Moon is why you're still holding back. So maybe we would have found
- 20:22some mechanic around some more high What are you saying, come on, do
- 20:25we keep this happen? Please? All right, Rick, will you let
- 20:30me alone? I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything. Who was always
- 20:32beefing at me whenever pep the cole and yellow for not ride and write?
- 20:36He took it out on me, said I didn't keep his bike in shape,
- 20:38So I decided to do so. What what's the matter outside? Dare
- 20:45malho a gun? No? When Moon grabbed his chest with both hands,
- 20:56swung in a half fark, and pitched forward on his face, young the
- 21:00light cort in the middle of the room, and then through the door open.
- 21:03The only noise I heard was the starting roll of a motorcycle about fifty
- 21:06feet away. I forgot about being careful and ran out into the street and
- 21:08saw what was fast becoming an increasingly smaller silhouette. I couldn't say who.
- 21:12When I returned to the shack and found Moon bed, I ran for my
- 21:15car, piled in and kept a heavy foot on the gas until I was
- 21:18back at the amusement pier, where I figured I might find a team of
- 21:22grangvile and rigs standing around like nothing had happened. When I got there,
- 21:26I found just that. Out on the pier was Miss money Bags herself,
- 21:29walking slowly away from Pepper and Mickey and taw the hot dog stand. When
- 21:33I was next to her and about ready to grab on and start yelling,
- 21:34copy saw something else, something that didn't sink in right away. There was
- 21:41a tiny iron skull on an iron chain, swinging from the gold charm braceless
- 21:45you wore on our right wrist. If you're taking inventory mode, I'll make
- 21:48it tast will you. The next show start in a couple of minutes,
- 21:51and I'm going on a loose place and I don't mark it there on your
- 21:52wrist, Adrian, It's a miniature the one Pepper has in the handlebars of
- 21:56his bike right right his trademark about does that hang all of it? No,
- 22:02it just hangs one of us, if I'm right, goodbye. It
- 22:11was only a hunch and a screwelly one at that. But as I ran
- 22:15past Mickey and Pepper, who stared at me like my nose was on fire,
- 22:17and headed to the shop out in the back where I knew I could
- 22:19find the bike that Lu had been killed on, I gave myself a fifty
- 22:22to fifty chance of being right. But when I was inside the place and
- 22:26next to the twisted jumble of steel that had once been a motorcycle. The
- 22:29odds jumped from there to sure thing because when I passed my fingers over the
- 22:33chrome handlebars, I found that they were not smooth all the way, And
- 22:37the next second I knewmore I was not alone. I jumped from a bike
- 22:41breach of my gun and wheeled around the wrong way. When I started back
- 22:52for this world there were only two things in it. When I shop searing
- 22:57pain the length of the right side in my face. On the other,
- 23:02crazy thought that since I was still alive, I had to get to the
- 23:03droom and stop Adrian Grenville before murder happened again. I ran outside and the
- 23:14round at the front, where I saw that the rider's trap door entrance was
- 23:17already closed, that the act was about to begin, and as I heard
- 23:19the motors raw in a voice announced that Adrian and Mickey were going to ride
- 23:22together. I spotted jess haadly at the top of the stairs. It led
- 23:25onto the spectator's barkening. I took a dozen steps up to him, two
- 23:29at a time, and as the house lights faded in the floods over the
- 23:30riders came up. I grabbed him and shouted that we had to stop the
- 23:33act while the bikes were still only getting under way, or death would get
- 23:36start feeling again. Why are you talking about my own, Hadley? Why
- 23:38don't we stop those bikes? I don't know. They can't hear a thing
- 23:41down me. Well, luckily, Tully, they could see. Get in
- 23:44the house lights Headley and turn them up. I'm gonna shoot out the oldhead
- 23:47flood coma. How are you a pile of girls? I get calling Hadley.
- 23:48I'm going to show no me, doctor Richard Reely, doctor Richard Well
- 24:06Malo before she blacked out. The police say Micky admitted wanting to get Pepper
- 24:11because she was gray jealous of Adrian. They haven't got a straight yet about
- 24:15Moon's death and exactly why Lou was killed by mistake? How'd that go?
- 24:18I went two ways, Hadley. One Mickey fixed Pepper's bike so that the
- 24:22oil line would give you get it. Then, Moon, convinced that Lou
- 24:26had gone yellow, switched the bikes to prove that Lou's constant complained about the
- 24:30bikes were simply an alibi. Here's the joker. He switched right into a
- 24:36double play Lou Bryan got killed instead of Pepper. Then after the crack up,
- 24:42Moon knew that it should have happened to Pepper. Oh yeah, sure,
- 24:47but for a lot of reasons, he didn't want to stick around and
- 24:48talk it over. When he was about to tell me the truth, make
- 24:52he shot him. Guys, if you knew the bikes are switched, you
- 24:55would look for someone with reason to kill Pepper, not Lom correct. And
- 25:00once I did know that, there was only Lou and Mickey. See,
- 25:03I picked Mickey because, for one thing, her motive was stronger, and
- 25:07for another Moon found a lady's handkerchief near the bikes. So Moro, you
- 25:11come out here, please, all right, mister Grenville, see you?
- 25:15Yeah, my loaf catch the acts some night when we play it straight.
- 25:19Still a good show. Well, I'm a lucky man, Marco, doctor
- 25:26says he'd been's going to be fine a few days. She wants to see
- 25:29you now, but it can only be for a moment, you know,
- 25:32Frankly, mister Grenville, of moments about all I can take. I don't
- 25:34exactly like your daughter now now, Marlow, none of that. Please.
- 25:38The poor child's not well. Besides, she she wants to apologize to you
- 25:42and give you my check for one hundred dollars. Now, go on,
- 25:45boy, go on, she's calling for you. Okay, Hello, Marlow,
- 25:52I want to ask you a question, and of course apologize. I'm
- 25:56sorry. What's the court question? The iron skull on my bracelet? What
- 26:03did it mean to you? Oh? Well, it was a reminder that
- 26:06Pepper had one dangling from the handlebars of his bike, and that if Moon
- 26:08had switched bikes, which was a wild thought at the time, that which
- 26:12was called loose bike would have a warn spot on the chrome handlebars where the
- 26:15iron chain had rubbed. And it did. Now my turn. You told
- 26:21Pepper in particular Mickey, that I was all excited about something, didn't you.
- 26:23Yes? Why do you ask, Phil? Because I was wondering how
- 26:26Micky knew where I was so that she could come down and play Crown the
- 26:30private detective. Oh Phil, she could have killed you, yes, yes,
- 26:33And then when she didn't, I could figure that she'd given up and
- 26:36only wanted time to crash your motorcycle into mind when we were high on the
- 26:38wall. Is that it? Yeah, that's it all the way around.
- 26:41Now, if you please my check and goodbye. Hmhmm check, yeah,
- 26:45oh oh yes, here, here it is. And for all that you've
- 26:49done for me, hey, cut it up. It's supposed to be sick.
- 26:52We didn't get back in bed. Oh, Marlowe, I'm not any
- 26:55sicker than you are. That's just to keep Daddy from blowing his top.
- 26:59Now, come, they're silly. I'm all right, you sure, I'm
- 27:03positive that's all I wanted to know. No across my knee. Your daddy
- 27:10should have gotten around of it along time ago. I kept sweating aware.
- 27:29I figured it would do the most good until daddy, two doctors and a
- 27:32nurse came in, and then I recommended that my client can sell the child
- 27:36psychologist for his daughter and a full grown one for himself, and I left.
- 27:41But by the time I was outside, i'd cool off something, and
- 27:45it was then that I remembered I had carelessly shoved one hundred dollars check which
- 27:48belonged to my wallet, into a side pocket. When I took it out
- 27:52and unfolded it, I saw that it was all in order, names and
- 27:56numbers correct. But then as I started to put it away, I saw
- 28:00something else on the beck and scribbled in pencil ps working with a private detective.
- 28:07Sounds like much more fun than more recycles. I'll be it your office
- 28:11first thing Monday morning, signed Adrian. I turned around and started back to
- 28:18the hospital. This was not going to be The Adventures of Philip Marlowe created
- 28:38by Raymond Chandler, star Gerald Moore and are produced and directed by Norman McDonald.
- 28:45Script is by Meldon la Robert Mitchell and Gene Levitt featured in the cast,
- 28:48where Barbara Eiler, Ted Von Elks, David Ellis, Virginia Gregg Wilms,
- 28:52Herbert, Paul Dubov and Peter Prousse. The special music is by Richard
- 28:56Urant. He shorting be with us again next week. When Philip Marlowe say
- 29:07it was only a gambler's marker, a promise to pay worth a thousand bucks,
- 29:12and I was hired to find it. Ah, that sounded easy until
- 29:18I realized that it meant the whole future to two men, freedom to a
- 29:22third, and death to the girl in the cottage. Sunday will be Mother's
- 29:41Day, and the boy with the neighbor's prize rose in his lapel and a
- 29:45box of cigars under his arm will be missus Benny's little boy Jack ready for
- 29:49his idea of a proper Mother's Day celebration for an unusually hilarious Mother's Day session
- 29:56with America's only thirty nine year old child prodigy. Here the Jack Benny Show
- 30:00Someday on all of these same CBS network stations. This is Roy Rowan speaking.
- 30:06Now stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most of these stations.
- 30:15This is CBS the Columbia Broadcasting System. Welcome back. I have to
- 30:30tip my hat to the show. I love the whole idea of this particular
- 30:37setup and mystery. There are certain motifs that we see a lot or hear
- 30:42a lot in Golden age radio drama. One is the circus as a location
- 30:48for crime. Another is a train, and these can be entertaining and that's
- 30:56why they're so often reused. But it's it's really nice to see something different.
- 31:02And this whole setup of motorcycles stunt riding is it one that is as
- 31:07typical of a Golden age radio drama. The end, I have to admit,
- 31:12did have some issues without getting into whether the whole banking motif was used
- 31:23in so many other radio dramas as well as movies. It really fails out
- 31:30of place here even for the time. In fact, the times we've heard
- 31:33it have been on shows with much more of a comedic edge like The Thin
- 31:38Man and the very early comedy detective stories of Let George Do It. And
- 31:45a hard boiled drama that relies on action doesn't really even fit for its time.
- 31:52So that was a bit discordant. But other than that, I thought
- 31:56it was a solid episode and I hope you enjoyed it, and I do
- 31:59have one fun as we go ahead and sign off. If you've emailed the
- 32:04show or you've sent in a question I have in the recent times, I've
- 32:12not gone back to you because my wife and I were traveling. I do
