Latest / GENZONE / UAE Corporate Tax Deadline September 2026 | Avoid FTA Penalties Before It's Too Late
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you run a business in the UAE and your financial year ended on the 31st of December 2025, September is an important month because the Federal Tax Authority has just issued a reminder.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Taxable persons in this category need to file their corporate tax return and pay any corporate tax due before the end of September 2026.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And there are a few misconceptions about the deadlines that could cause business owners problems.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So let me simplify exactly what you need to know.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: First, why September?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Well, under the UAE corporate tax framework, the general deadline for filing your corporate tax return and paying the tax due is nine months from the end of your relevant tax period.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So if your financial year ended on December 31st, 2025, your nine-month filing window takes you to the end of September 2026, which is this month now, if you're watching this video in real time.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And the FTA has specifically reminded businesses about this.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: So there's no way that you can make a mistake about this.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: There are literally spam sending emails, calls, texts, so you cannot get this wrong.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: And of course, your accounting team should also be reminding you about this.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And of course, the tax liability is in your hands to make sure that things are done properly.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Even if you don't owe any corporate tax, you still need to complete the relevant filings.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And if you do qualify for things like the small business relief, you need to make sure that you're electing for it and you need to make sure that your team actually understands your situation.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Just to be clear, no tax doesn't mean no return.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You still need to submit your returns, otherwise, you will get penalties.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And the FTA has, again, like I said, reminded many people about this for everyone who is required to file their taxes by email, text, and even in some cases, calls.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Now, the second mistake I see is waiting until the last few days to start preparing everything.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: If you have a really small business, okay, that could work, but if the accounting team you're working with doesn't have enough time to actually complete your financial summary and statements, then it's gonna be an issue.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You don't want to wait until the night before the tax deadline.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And what could happen is everybody is trying to submit at the same time and the portal is down, right?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: This is not something you want to avoid.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: You need to understand that it needs to be done in advance.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So make sure that you're working with the right team.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: If it's Gen Zone accounting, reach out to us now to ensure that you are not going to miss this deadline.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And that's why bookkeeping matters.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You need to do this well in advance.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Good compliance starts way before the tax deadline.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: You should be doing this actively every month or on a quarterly basis at least.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Now, what if I have a free zone company?
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That's something that people tell me.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think, oh, free zone companies aren't subject to tax.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: No, that's not true.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: In 2026, all companies in the UAE, even freelancers, are subject to tax.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Now, this doesn't mean you have to pay tax, but you will be subject to tax if you qualify to pay tax.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Do you qualify?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That's exactly where you need to determine that as well.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think that free zones equal zero tax.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: No, that's an oversimplification.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Some type of companies could, but it's very rare for your business to be a part of those companies.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: The list is very specific.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: So make sure that you're doing things properly.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Late filings and late payments can result in administrative penalties under the rules, of course.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So if your financial year ended again, December 31st, 2025, don't treat September as the month to start thinking about corporate tax and start thinking about your taxable situation and prepare the funds to pay those taxes.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Here's what I would be doing right now, since it's you know two weeks.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: We're two weeks into September now, at this time of this recording, at least.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Make sure that your accounting team is starting to work on your tax situation now.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Don't wait any longer.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: If they've already started, great.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Because you need to prepare, review, and submit your return, and make sure that any tax due is paid within the required time frame.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: So let's say you submitted everything, great, but for whatever reason you don't have the money to pay the tax, that's an issue.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: So you need to prepare this in advance, have those funds allocated to pay that tax.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Now, the reality is most businesses don't have to pay a tax here in the UAE.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Most businesses don't qualify to pay tax.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But if you do, be prepared to do that so that you don't get any penalties.
