- 0:00Wow, that is not just mind blowing, that's brain blowing.
- 0:03Like that's NSR team and yeah, I am going to go into the
- 0:06prefrontal cortex. Our questions, shout out to Maya
- 0:11E Congo from Abu Dhabi. So number one is does the
- 0:16prefrontal cortex develop differently depending on gender?
- 0:23Oh man, that's a good question. You know, honestly, I can't say
- 0:25for sure. I remember seeing some studies
- 0:29on this like a couple of years ago, and I don't think I ever
- 0:32really got to the bottom of it. I'm sorry I can't give a
- 0:35definitive answer, but you know, hey, this is also one of those
- 0:38things where you don't want to look stupid asking questions.
- 0:43What kind of neuroscientist wants to come on a podcast and
- 0:45say, I don't know the answer? The answer is an honest one, one
- 0:49that will actually say, look, I don't you know, this is the you
- 0:51have reached the limits of my knowledge.
- 0:53And I think that's also, by the way, a good sign of who you
- 0:56should trust if you ask someone a question and they always have.
- 0:58The absolutely, absolutely. I say something, you know, I'm a
- 1:02professional, right? But I don't know all the
- 1:05answers. But I pride myself, you know,
- 1:09knowing we had to get the answers if I need to.
- 1:11Exactly, exactly. Yeah, I could find that answer.
- 1:14Maybe I'll check it out and I'll send.
- 1:15It out of course. So that means that automatically
- 1:19we should book a party for this so that you're going to come
- 1:24back. You can come back with advances.
- 1:25Cortex Edition. Yeah.
- 1:28Prefrontal cortex addition. You said you're ready.
- 1:31So #2 is a Does a stress or trauma inhibit its function,
- 1:38particularly before it's fully developed?
- 1:42Interesting. Yes, so I do know the answer to
- 1:44this one. Stress does influence the
- 1:48function of the prefrontal cortex.
- 1:50It's quite interesting also based on some research done in
- 1:53my PhD lab. So when in in short term stress,
- 1:59couple days, couple hours, whatever the the prefrontal
- 2:02cortex actually gets more effective, it becomes better,
- 2:05like the cells are are interacting more efficiently.
- 2:07Which makes sense because you have to deal with some
- 2:09challenge. You need to be locked in, right?
- 2:11You got to be capable of processing the challenge.
- 2:14But with chronic stress over time goes for weeks or months,
- 2:18the prefrontal cortex, the function goes way down and the
- 2:21brain cells actually become less effective at interacting.
- 2:23What what's really happening amazingly, is that the, the
- 2:27receptors on the neurons where you know, brain cells are
- 2:30sending messages to each other, the receptors start going away.
- 2:34And so the brain cells actually have trouble communicating with
- 2:38each other. And, and basically what that
- 2:39amounts to is that you're processing power and your
- 2:42computing power goes down South. Chronic stress is bad.
- 2:44As for the timing, I don't think it can, you know, impair I, you
- 2:53know, I would say in the context of like normal ranges of stress
- 2:57will not necessarily change the function of your prefrontal
- 3:00cortex long term, but like traumatic stress, like PTSD, you
- 3:05know, really traumatic experiences.
- 3:06It could I've been. I believe there is evidence that
- 3:08that it does alter the the function of the prefrontal
- 3:10cortex. Interesting.
- 3:13SO there's a third question, and that is how is the prefrontal
- 3:18cortex different from other parts of the frontal lobe?
- 3:23I mean, the prefrontal cortex is the most like evolved.
- 3:27It's like the, it's the, it's the reason you have the frontal
- 3:30cortex and then you have the prefrontal cortex.
- 3:32The prefrontal cortex is even more for towards the front.
- 3:36And there's this general idea that like the further away from
- 3:39the brain stem you get and like this base level, the more
- 3:43evolved and, and fancy the brain area is.
- 3:46And so the prefrontal cortex, it just, it has a lot of amazing
- 3:50functions that aren't necessarily seen in the, the
- 3:52frontal cortex, like much more higher level cognition and being
- 3:55able to understand people and do things that make us human
- 3:58really. But, but The thing is the, the
- 4:01prefrontal cortex is also like every brain area.
- 4:04It's like very distributed. There's all these different
- 4:06nuclei and brain and sections, you know, within the prefrontal
- 4:08cortex there's the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and all these
- 4:12different subsets of areas that are all involved in different
- 4:15things. And you know, the brain is just
- 4:18immensely complicated. But without a prefrontal cortex,
- 4:21you know we would not be as high functioning animals.
- 4:24I like that they say that human beings, we are animals, it's
- 4:29just that we are higher animals, right?
- 4:31And of course, we have the animals with the highest level
- 4:33of IQ. That is why we are able to
- 4:35dominate. So #4 is the prefrontal cortex
- 4:39is sometimes called the CEO of the brain.
- 4:43Why is that and do you agree with that?
- 4:48Interesting You could say that you, I guess, I mean, there's a
- 4:51couple different CE OS of the brain and actually the nucleus
- 4:54accumbens that I mentioned earlier in the context of MDMA
- 4:57is also one of those. But I would say, yeah, I guess
- 4:59the way I kind of think about the prefrontal cortex is it's
- 5:02like the babysitter of the brain.
- 5:03You have all these brain areas that are just like impulsive and
- 5:05they're doing their job. And your prefrontal cortex is,
- 5:07is often like shutting off those impulses and being like, wait, a
- 5:11wait. But you know, before we slap
- 5:13this person in the face, let's think about this for a minute,
- 5:16you know, and it's kind of babysitting and keeping those
- 5:18brain areas in check. So, yeah.
- 5:20And many, many, it is the CEO. But I like to think of the the
- 5:23CEO of the brain sort of as the nucleus accumbens, because the
- 5:27nucleus accumbens is really in charge of like decision making
- 5:30or not in charge of it. But it has a major role in like
- 5:32deciding what things we pursue and what actions we do based on
- 5:37how much they benefit us. And you know, I think that's
- 5:39kind of like the role of the CEO really.
- 5:41So is it the CEO or the COO? I feel like the, the, the, the
- 5:45nucleus accumbens is the CEO and the prefrontal cortex is like
- 5:49the executive board, like the, you know, you have a board of
- 5:51direct or a board that's like steering the company in the
- 5:54right direction. I feel like that's sort of those
- 5:57two are combining to to make things work properly.
- 6:02OK, interested stuff. So this particular friend of
- 6:05mine, Maya, she she's very obsessed with the prefrontal
- 6:09cortex. And anytime she sees a person
- 6:12acting, you know, in an abnormal way, she just says, oh, that
- 6:17person's prefrontal cortex is not properly developed.
- 6:20And she is told me before that the prefrontal cortex actually
- 6:26fully develops at the age of 25. Is is is that true?
- 6:31Yeah, the prefrontal cortex, whether it's there's definitely
- 6:33not like a you, you're 25, it's done.
- 6:37It's not really like that. It's more of that, you know, as
- 6:41you're getting older, your prefrontal cortex is continuing
- 6:44to be shaped by your experiences.
- 6:46That's really what that whole like your prefrontal cortex
- 6:49isn't done until 25 means. It means that unlike other brain
- 6:54areas, your Pfc remains flexible as you get older.
- 6:58And so, you know, it may not, it may be 25 that you kind of get
- 7:02to that point or maybe a little bit later.
- 7:06You know, it doesn't really it, it's not like a firm thing that
- 7:09it's like boom, 25, you're done.
