- 0:04Speaker 1: out with you on a Thursday edition of the Craig
- 0:08Speaker 1: Way Show. I am on the road as well. In
- 0:13Speaker 1: our studios in Austin, Texas. Is our main men producer
- 0:17Speaker 1: Ronald making sure we sound pretty man. Do we have
- 0:20Speaker 1: a jam pack show for you today? ChRI Cam is
- 0:23Speaker 1: on the road. He's in Starkville, Mississippi, as number one
- 0:26Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball and their head coach, Vick Schaeffer take
- 0:29Speaker 1: on Mississippi State. Craig will be on the program here
- 0:33Speaker 1: in about seventeen minutes so we all can set our
- 0:35Speaker 1: watches to it and to talk about last night's overtime
- 0:39Speaker 1: loss by the Texas men's basketball team eighty six eighty
- 0:42Speaker 1: one in ot We'll hear more from head coach Roddy
- 0:46Speaker 1: Terry here in a moment. We have inconceivable coming up
- 0:49Speaker 1: later this hour, and is it inconceivable for the Philadelphia
- 0:53Speaker 1: seventy six ers to turn it around? Well, podcast p
- 0:59Speaker 1: Paul George thinks that they can. He said, you know what,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna cut the podcast and I'm going to focus
- 1:04Speaker 1: on trying to get my team to the NBA finals,
- 1:07Speaker 1: we'll talk about the likelihood of that.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We'll also probably.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Make some fun of Paul George for thinking that the
- 1:14Speaker 1: podcast is the reason that his team is struggling. NFL
- 1:17Speaker 1: Combine starts today, obviously, and the debate now rages on
- 1:21Speaker 1: as Abdul Carter as a stress factor in his foot.
- 1:25Speaker 1: What does that mean for the likely number one overall
- 1:28Speaker 1: pick to the Tennessee Titans. They bok now at the
- 1:32Speaker 1: edge rusher out of Penn State. But we have to
- 1:35Speaker 1: talk first about the breaking news that came down the
- 1:37Speaker 1: line right before we went on the air, and that
- 1:40Speaker 1: is from the San Antonio Spurs and their head coach
- 1:43Speaker 1: Greg Popovich. Now, he put out a statement via the
- 1:45Speaker 1: Spurs earlier today about thirty minutes ago. Quote, I've decided
- 1:51Speaker 1: not to return to the sidelines of this season. Mitch
- 1:54Speaker 1: Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job, and
- 1:57Speaker 1: resolve and professionalism the players have sticking together during a
- 2:01Speaker 1: challenging season has been outstanding. The head coach wrote, I
- 2:05Speaker 1: will continue to focus on my health with the hope
- 2:07Speaker 1: that I can return to coaching in the future. So
- 2:10Speaker 1: that ends any sort of speculation and debate. Greg Popovich
- 2:14Speaker 1: the Santonio Spurs head coach not returning to the sidelines
- 2:19Speaker 1: this season. I think a lot of people would have
- 2:21Speaker 1: assumed that they could have guessed that, as there's only
- 2:23Speaker 1: about twenty games left and the phena in Victor Wembinyama
- 2:27Speaker 1: as well shut down for the season with a blood
- 2:29Speaker 1: clot in his shoulder. So no Popovich, no Victor wembin
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yama for the remainder of the season for the Spurs.
- 2:38Speaker 1: This does not, by any means mean that Papovich is
- 2:42Speaker 1: done coaching at the NBA level. Anybody who was eulogizing
- 2:48Speaker 1: the career of one of, if not the greatest NBA
- 2:51Speaker 1: head coach of all time, I thought that it was
- 2:53Speaker 1: premature when we started having those conversations earlier this past week.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Now he puts it to bed. He says, I'm going
- 3:01Speaker 1: to try to come back next season. I do want
- 3:03Speaker 1: to remind everyone, though, that before Greg Popovich pat Riley
- 3:09Speaker 1: Phil Jackson, there was one Greg Arbach, who is the
- 3:14Speaker 1: GM and head coach of the Boston Celtics where they
- 3:17Speaker 1: were winning banner after banner after banner in the nineteen sixties.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And I remind everybody about Red Arbach. Even if Popovich says,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm not going to be on the sideline day to day.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm not going to do the forty one road trips
- 3:30Speaker 1: this season that it takes to be a head coach
- 3:33Speaker 1: in the NBA. He still will be very much a
- 3:37Speaker 1: member of the San Antonio Spurs organization, and he will
- 3:39Speaker 1: probably have his fingerprints all over the organization until he
- 3:42Speaker 1: doesn't want to have his fingerprints all over the organization anymore.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So the idea that it was just going to be
- 3:47Speaker 1: some sort of mutual disappearing now that never was going
- 3:52Speaker 1: to happen. I didn't understand it. Why everybody was trying
- 3:56Speaker 1: to act that way. He puts it to bed. The
- 3:58Speaker 1: statement from the Spurs reads pop not returning to the
- 4:01Speaker 1: sideline this season, focusing on his health may return in
- 4:05Speaker 1: the future.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Well.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Speaking of head coaches, Texas men's basketball last night, Rodney
- 4:09Speaker 1: Terry spoke to the media after what was a very
- 4:13Speaker 1: disappointing loss. Needless to say, as the Texas men's basketball
- 4:19Speaker 1: program comes just short in overtime loss, a five point
- 4:24Speaker 1: loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks Ian Fayetteville eighty six eighty one.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Guard Tray Johnson sept the University of Texas a freshman
- 4:32Speaker 1: single game scoring record, had thirty nine points. The mark
- 4:38Speaker 1: the first matchup between the two former Southwest Conference opponents
- 4:42Speaker 1: since twenty ten. Johnson broke the previous freshman single scoring
- 4:45Speaker 1: mark of thirty seven set by Kevin Durant in the
- 4:49Speaker 1: six seven season. He reached the thirty point mark for
- 4:52Speaker 1: the third time this season. He ellipsed his previous season
- 4:56Speaker 1: high of thirty two that he had against Kentucky. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: was talking earlier this week as we geared up for
- 5:04Speaker 1: that game against Arkansas, and I didn't want to bring
- 5:06Speaker 1: it up on the air because I did not want
- 5:07Speaker 1: to jinx the Texas long Corns. But in games where
- 5:11Speaker 1: Trey Johnson had scored thirty or more points, the Long
- 5:13Speaker 1: Runs were two and out. So now they fall to
- 5:16Speaker 1: two and one in games that he scores more than
- 5:19Speaker 1: thirty points. Rodney Terry opened up his press conference last
- 5:22Speaker 1: night with this remark, well, yeah, I.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Like to commit my guys for great effort. Tonight I've
- 5:28Speaker 4: beat at a high level. Even when we got behind,
- 5:31Speaker 4: we knew we were going to have opportunity to still
- 5:33Speaker 4: stay in the game and have an opportunity to win
- 5:34Speaker 4: the game. We were riding position to do that. I
- 5:38Speaker 4: thought we got it really hard. Thought they made a
- 5:40Speaker 4: couple of big shots down the stretch. It's a difference
- 5:43Speaker 4: in the game. They got to the foul line thirty
- 5:45Speaker 4: one times. We got there thirteen times fourteen at the
- 5:49Speaker 4: half of them. But again, you know, I committed. My
- 5:53Speaker 4: guys were playing really hard tonight. Put forth a great effort.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That was head coach Rodney tis Now. The Arkansas Razorbacks
- 6:02Speaker 1: last night shot nine of seventeen from downtown the university.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Texts did a good job of preventing three pointers for
- 6:10Speaker 1: falling for Arkansas, and the question was asked for Rodney Terry,
- 6:16Speaker 1: how do you prevent the threes in the second half?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Text died a very good job of preventing Arkansas from
- 6:21Speaker 1: knocking down threes in the second half. How did that happen?
- 6:25Speaker 4: I mean, he has a lot of re pack. He's
- 6:26Speaker 4: one of the best players in this league, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 4: and sometimes he doesn't get protected that way. He treated
- 6:31Speaker 4: that way when he's shooting the basketball, trying to attack
- 6:34Speaker 4: the basket. You know, late in the game, we're gonna
- 6:38Speaker 4: put the ball in his hands and give him opportunity
- 6:40Speaker 4: to go win the game for uce. You know, he's
- 6:42Speaker 4: either gonna get fouled or why he's gonna make the
- 6:45Speaker 4: winning shot, you know, But he's a special talent.
- 6:49Speaker 5: We knew that when we signed him.
- 6:51Speaker 4: He was number one player in his class for a
- 6:52Speaker 4: better part of his career in high school to Cooper
- 6:56Speaker 4: flag reclassified.
- 6:58Speaker 2: But Tray's top, I.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Mean he's top picks one, top.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Players in.
- 7:04Speaker 1: I was talking about Rodney Today's Rodney Terry talking about
- 7:07Speaker 1: Trey Johnson, the all around incredible freshman talent and projected
- 7:12Speaker 1: top five pick in this year's NBA draft class. But
- 7:18Speaker 1: what did you do to fight back in both games?
- 7:21Speaker 1: As Texas was able to rally back in that second half,
- 7:24Speaker 1: outscored Arkansas by twelve points in the second half, only
- 7:28Speaker 1: to come up short in overtime, what did it take
- 7:31Speaker 1: to fight back in both games?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Coach? This is RT five. I thought we got it
- 7:36Speaker 2: pretty hard.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I thought, I guys, again, really good effort on the
- 7:40Speaker 4: defensive end of the floor. We started finishing possessions, and
- 7:45Speaker 4: then we did a good job attacking the paint offensively,
- 7:48Speaker 4: scoring in the paint.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Andrews im Will filling in for Craig Way on The
- 7:53Speaker 1: Craigway Show on Sports Radio am thirteen hundred the zone. Now,
- 7:57Speaker 1: did Arkansas do anything different in this one, Coach Terry,
- 8:01Speaker 1: did they do anything different to jump out to the lead?
- 8:05Speaker 2: That they did?
- 8:07Speaker 4: Well, they just put his down to drive and you know,
- 8:11Speaker 4: hope that again that you follow him and put him
- 8:13Speaker 4: at the file line and stuff. And they got there.
- 8:15Speaker 4: They got to the file line. We bailed him out
- 8:18Speaker 4: on a couple of shots that they had no chance
- 8:20Speaker 4: of making. So, no, they didn't play any different, rent
- 8:23Speaker 4: and they played the last time. They put the ball
- 8:25Speaker 4: inside a few times more this last time.
- 8:30Speaker 1: No, it was a question coming into this one if
- 8:32Speaker 1: Arthur Kaluma would be able to even suit up and play,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and Rodney Terry said before the game that he appeared
- 8:38Speaker 1: that he was going to be available. He finished with
- 8:41Speaker 1: his seventh double double of the season, thirteen points and
- 8:44Speaker 1: a game high eleven rebounds in the thirty seven minutes
- 8:48Speaker 1: of action that he was able to play last night.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Now ut comes back to the Moody Center. They host
- 8:57Speaker 1: Georgia Saturday, March first, which is this Saturday. Tip is
- 9:00Speaker 1: at seven pm. I'll be on ESPN two and long
- 9:03Speaker 1: the radio, your Longhorn Radio network as well. But this
- 9:05Speaker 1: is one of those games that the first time these
- 9:08Speaker 1: two teams matched up, Arkansas and Texas, you wanted to
- 9:12Speaker 1: have it back at the end that Texas was able
- 9:14Speaker 1: to fight back at the end to make the score
- 9:15Speaker 1: a little bit closer, but you would thought, oh, that
- 9:19Speaker 1: was one that might have got away from us. And
- 9:21Speaker 1: then last night to battle back the way that they
- 9:23Speaker 1: did is very important and it's going to be a
- 9:27Speaker 1: calling card for this team as they continue to move
- 9:30Speaker 1: forward into the SEC Tournament. But coming into last night's matchup,
- 9:34Speaker 1: both Arkansas and Texas were essentially presented as bubble teams
- 9:39Speaker 1: and this game, we said beforehand was not a must
- 9:42Speaker 1: win for the long Horns, but it was a you
- 9:45Speaker 1: sure like to win it. It would make life a
- 9:46Speaker 1: lot easier if you want it. Now the road for
- 9:50Speaker 1: the Longhorns to not only get a seed come March
- 9:54Speaker 1: Madness time, that will give you an easier path to
- 9:58Speaker 1: your eventual goal, which of course is to get deep
- 10:00Speaker 1: into March Madness. But this makes the trip just that
- 10:04Speaker 1: much more difficult. You have to be excited though, for
- 10:08Speaker 1: a guy like Trey Johnson and for Longhorn fans that
- 10:11Speaker 1: came into this season with high expectations and high hopes
- 10:14Speaker 1: for the freshman guard. I feel like there's no way
- 10:18Speaker 1: that you can present this as not a outstanding success
- 10:22Speaker 1: of a season for Trey Johnson. Now, he probably wishes
- 10:26Speaker 1: that the wins were kind of piling up a little
- 10:29Speaker 1: bit more for his idea. Probably single season on the
- 10:32Speaker 1: forty acres as he's probably gonna go in the draft
- 10:35Speaker 1: in the NBA draft is a lottery pick and a
- 10:37Speaker 1: high one of that. You would hope that the wins
- 10:40Speaker 1: would kind of pile up. But every game he has
- 10:42Speaker 1: gotten a little bit better, which is exactly what you're
- 10:46Speaker 1: looking for out of a five star freshman like Trey Johnson.
- 10:49Speaker 1: When we come back, Craig Way names on the show.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He will join us to talk about last night's loss
- 10:54Speaker 1: and preview some of that UT baseball action as they
- 10:58Speaker 1: travel out to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Classic.
- 11:00Speaker 1: All that coming up. Andrew zim will fill in for
- 11:02Speaker 1: Craig Way on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Sports Radio thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zimmile filling in
- 11:10Speaker 1: for Craig Way. But we have a treat. We have
- 11:13Speaker 1: the guy's name who's has his name on the show.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It's Craig Way, Craig, how you doing today?
- 11:18Speaker 3: I think the praise you were searching for was eponymously named.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I think that's what I was going when they named
- 11:24Speaker 3: the show with my name on it, because before I
- 11:27Speaker 3: came back to iHeart, I've never done a show that
- 11:30Speaker 3: actually had my.
- 11:31Speaker 6: Name on it.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I was, you know, and it went by different names
- 11:36Speaker 3: across town. And when I was iHeart the first time,
- 11:40Speaker 3: and when I was up in Dallas, did a lot
- 11:41Speaker 3: of different shows, just didn't have my name on it
- 11:44Speaker 3: until they decided to.
- 11:45Speaker 7: Do that when I came back.
- 11:46Speaker 6: But you know, you go with it. Hey.
- 11:50Speaker 1: They tell me that if your name's in the show,
- 11:52Speaker 1: that you're doing something right. So you must be doing
- 11:54Speaker 1: something right.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Craig.
- 11:55Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about last night's game, man, Longhorn.
- 11:59Speaker 1: As they come up just short, they battled back in
- 12:01Speaker 1: the second half, they dropped one to Arkansas eighty six
- 12:04Speaker 1: eighty one.
- 12:05Speaker 2: You were on the call. What's your main takeaway here?
- 12:10Speaker 3: That the most difficult part of all of this for Texas,
- 12:14Speaker 3: and this has happened on four or five occasions that
- 12:17Speaker 3: there are eleven loss or twelve losses this season, is
- 12:20Speaker 3: digging themselves a hole from about the ten minute mark
- 12:24Speaker 3: of the first half to the ten minute mark of
- 12:26Speaker 3: the second half. And that's what happened against Texas A
- 12:31Speaker 3: and M, both at home and on the road. They
- 12:33Speaker 3: couldn't recover. Actually they were tired with the Aggies in
- 12:35Speaker 3: College Station at the happen They got dominated on the
- 12:39Speaker 3: glass in the second half.
- 12:40Speaker 7: In the home game, they fell behind by.
- 12:43Speaker 3: As many as twenty two with fourteen minutes ago and
- 12:46Speaker 3: came back and won. They've had other games where they
- 12:50Speaker 3: got behind and rallied back. They could not recover against
- 12:55Speaker 3: South Carolina, and it looked like they had recovered as
- 13:00Speaker 3: Arkansas that were down fourteen with ten minutes ago, came
- 13:04Speaker 3: all the way back and Trey Johnson's heroic efforts helped
- 13:09Speaker 3: them actually take a two point lead and then one
- 13:13Speaker 3: point lead, and then it winds up going overtime, and
- 13:15Speaker 3: they had the lead two or three occasions in the
- 13:18Speaker 3: first couple of minutes of overtime, but.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Couldn't finish it after that.
- 13:22Speaker 3: And so digging a hole is the issue for this
- 13:25Speaker 3: basketball team. If they can prevent that from happening, I mean,
- 13:29Speaker 3: they put themselves in a position down the stretch to
- 13:32Speaker 3: be able.
- 13:32Speaker 7: To win these games.
- 13:35Speaker 1: You talk about Trey Johnson, he braced the record that
- 13:38Speaker 1: Kevin Durant said. I talked to some people around the
- 13:42Speaker 1: NBA crack today, some of my people who are big
- 13:45Speaker 1: into the scouting, and they think that he's the best
- 13:47Speaker 1: guard now coming out of this year's draft.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Well, he's certainly trending up. He's continuing to play better
- 13:55Speaker 3: and better now. Trey will be the first to tell
- 13:58Speaker 3: you he felt terrible about the turnover there and overtime,
- 14:02Speaker 3: but you know, I think that's a product of how
- 14:06Speaker 3: much the long words.
- 14:07Speaker 7: Have had to lean off him. He was exhausted when
- 14:10Speaker 7: it was over.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And you know, he had a couple of difficult moments
- 14:16Speaker 3: trying to guard Carter Knox of Arkansas, who got some
- 14:20Speaker 3: straight line drives to the bucket doubtless drench in the
- 14:23Speaker 3: second half, but he was more than make it up
- 14:25Speaker 3: for it with what he was doing in shooting and
- 14:28Speaker 3: driving and then finding some other guys available to hit
- 14:31Speaker 3: some shots. And then he had the turnover there and
- 14:34Speaker 3: over time, and he could just tell, because we were
- 14:35Speaker 3: sitting right beside the bench a look on his face.
- 14:38Speaker 7: He felt terrible. And I know Arthur Gloom and went over.
- 14:41Speaker 3: To don't worry about him, man, let's go, and there
- 14:44Speaker 3: they were with an opportunity. They had a shot. It
- 14:46Speaker 3: worked out that way. But it wasn't for his lack
- 14:50Speaker 3: of trying. He had a great effort.
- 14:53Speaker 2: So the universe wy of Texas last night. Craig in
- 14:55Speaker 2: the second half.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Really really did a good job on the perimeter making sure.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Arkansas couldn't knock down those threes.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Did it feel like there was an intensity coming out
- 15:04Speaker 1: of the locker room?
- 15:07Speaker 7: There was.
- 15:08Speaker 3: And here's the other thing about this, zim Arkansas was
- 15:12Speaker 3: seven to twelve beyond the arc in.
- 15:15Speaker 7: The first half.
- 15:16Speaker 3: They shot fifty eight percent from three point range in.
- 15:20Speaker 7: The first half. In the first six or seven.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Minutes of the second half, they didn't even really try
- 15:28Speaker 3: to shoot. They had built the lead and then they
- 15:30Speaker 3: kind of went half court and that kind of played
- 15:32Speaker 3: in the Longhorn's hands to fight back. And then they
- 15:35Speaker 3: started launching some threes. The missing some threes, but they.
- 15:38Speaker 7: Hit two in the second half. Meanwhile, was the Longhorns
- 15:41Speaker 7: to turn their three.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Point fortunes around in the second half. That helped them
- 15:46Speaker 3: climb back into the game. But as Rodney Terry poured
- 15:48Speaker 3: out who just paired the comment. Free pro shooting was
- 15:51Speaker 3: a big difference as well. Algworns hit some down the stretch,
- 15:55Speaker 3: but Arkansas really front loaded a lot of free pros
- 15:58Speaker 3: in the first half and building the other legend league.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Did you feel like they just were getting the calls, Craig,
- 16:04Speaker 1: That's kind of what it felt like with Rodney Terror
- 16:06Speaker 1: was hinting at that they just were getting calls.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Well, let me put it to you this way, Zim.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I had somebody tell me a couple of folks with
- 16:17Speaker 3: the University of Arkansas kind of smile when you were
- 16:20Speaker 3: chatting on my way out of the arena getting to
- 16:24Speaker 3: the tunnel to go up, and they kind of smiled
- 16:26Speaker 3: and said, you got Bud Walton to night, meaning home
- 16:32Speaker 3: court officiating, low home boocket thing. I don't think let
- 16:36Speaker 3: me let me be honest about this. I don't think
- 16:41Speaker 3: that the officials were you know, biasked or anything like that.
- 16:47Speaker 3: But I'm also here to tell you that was not
- 16:50Speaker 3: a good crew. That's a bottom level crew. The lead
- 16:53Speaker 3: official is a pretty good number three official, and the.
- 16:59Speaker 7: Other two got one guy didn't make.
- 17:02Speaker 3: A call the other night, and the other gentleman flat
- 17:04Speaker 3: out missed call after call.
- 17:07Speaker 7: He's also the one.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Who teed up Rodney Kerry's well, Rodney Finley just had
- 17:11Speaker 3: enough because there was a shot of his face looking
- 17:18Speaker 3: quizzically when the ball went out of bound, said he
- 17:20Speaker 3: called it off Texas.
- 17:21Speaker 7: It was clearly off the message of Arkansas.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And that's when Rodney started to loose it at that point,
- 17:29Speaker 3: and Rodney asked another offis who was seating right nearby,
- 17:32Speaker 3: why didn't he help him out there? And the official
- 17:35Speaker 3: told Rodney that's not my call. What do you mean,
- 17:39Speaker 3: it's not your call?
- 17:40Speaker 7: He could help.
- 17:41Speaker 3: We see it happen all the time, you know, to
- 17:44Speaker 3: overturn the call and say no, it goes back the
- 17:46Speaker 3: other way. But let me say this, the officials didn't
- 17:51Speaker 3: lose Texas the game. It's just to work some key moments, like,
- 17:55Speaker 3: for example, after that ruling that the ball went out
- 17:58Speaker 3: of bounds off Texas when it didn't, Arkansas came down
- 18:01Speaker 3: and hit a three point and it pushed a eight
- 18:04Speaker 3: point lead. Do an eleven point lead makes a difference.
- 18:07Speaker 3: It makes a difficdult to rally back. But in the
- 18:10Speaker 3: second half, I will also tell you that this proved
- 18:13Speaker 3: missed some calls two or three calls against Arkansas should
- 18:18Speaker 3: have gone.
- 18:19Speaker 7: Against Texas and did not.
- 18:22Speaker 3: So if you say, okay, well they were equally bad
- 18:25Speaker 3: on both sides, maybe pretty close, you just hate it
- 18:28Speaker 3: to me that way. You want them to be, you know, compliment.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Well you what you don't want is you don't want
- 18:35Speaker 1: to give them an option. You want to put yourself
- 18:37Speaker 1: in a position that the refts can influence the game
- 18:40Speaker 1: like that.
- 18:40Speaker 2: I think that's really what it comes down to.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I know before the game the coach you staff wasn't
- 18:50Speaker 3: really thrilled when they saw it was gonna appreciate because usually,
- 18:55Speaker 3: and the way this thing works is they'll put one
- 18:58Speaker 3: really good official, one decent, and one who's kind of
- 19:01Speaker 3: lesser experience in the fruit for any specific SEC games.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I've already seen the list of officials for Saturday nights
- 19:09Speaker 3: team against Georgia, and they follow the script to that
- 19:12Speaker 3: there's a really good official still kind of learning and
- 19:16Speaker 3: things so that he's like the number three. Well, they
- 19:20Speaker 3: put three number three on the game last night, so
- 19:22Speaker 3: they didn't help didn't help either side for sure.
- 19:26Speaker 1: So Texas plays Georgia. You you hinted to that this
- 19:29Speaker 1: is another team that's in the same win area as Texas.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Arkansas was in the same win conference record as Texas.
- 19:37Speaker 1: What do you feel about this game on Saturday, Craig.
- 19:42Speaker 7: We are now in we must win territory.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Got a They absolutely, I think, short of winning the
- 19:50Speaker 3: SEC tournament, and all you're asking him to do there
- 19:54Speaker 3: is win five games and five nights, which is not
- 19:57Speaker 3: practically impossible. But it's happened twice, Spikey's I think with
- 20:02Speaker 3: yukon Syracuse. It happened in the ACC with Virginia Tech
- 20:07Speaker 3: a couple of years back.
- 20:08Speaker 7: But it's a really hard.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Thing to make happen, to try to win five games
- 20:12Speaker 3: and five nights because your legs just go after about
- 20:14Speaker 3: the night. So that's why it hasn't happened in the
- 20:18Speaker 3: Big twelve.
- 20:19Speaker 7: So they're in a position.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Where they've got to win the two home games Georgia
- 20:26Speaker 3: on Saturday and in Oklahoma on Senior Night the following
- 20:29Speaker 3: Saturay for a couple of reasons. One first and foremost,
- 20:33Speaker 3: they need to win. But the other thing is those
- 20:36Speaker 3: are two teams, desperate bubble teams, and they can knock
- 20:39Speaker 3: them off the bubble if they've win those games. Now
- 20:43Speaker 3: the game in between is in Startfille against Mississippi State.
- 20:46Speaker 7: If they were to win that and.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Sweep the last three games, I think they're.
- 20:49Speaker 7: In the field.
- 20:51Speaker 3: If they don't win that, and that's gonna be a
- 20:53Speaker 3: tough assignment in Startfield, then they're probably looking at needing to.
- 20:57Speaker 7: Win at least one game in Nashville.
- 20:59Speaker 3: So they absolutely have to win the two home games,
- 21:02Speaker 3: I think too, and then maybe with one more game,
- 21:05Speaker 3: whether it's a Start Bills or in Nashville to get
- 21:08Speaker 3: into the field.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And I spoke to our mutual friend Cameron Parker earlier
- 21:13Speaker 1: today and he wanted me to ask you about your
- 21:15Speaker 1: travel story. So before I let you go, what's what's
- 21:17Speaker 1: the travel story that I need to hear, Craig.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Everything was pretty sedate going to Arkansas.
- 21:27Speaker 7: You know, it's a pretty quick flight up.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Now.
- 21:29Speaker 7: We were back late late last night.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Listen, I hope he.
- 21:32Speaker 7: Told you about his travel story.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Have you heard about them having the dinner at Big
- 21:37Speaker 3: Shaker's Bar?
- 21:40Speaker 7: No, there, I've seen pictures.
- 21:43Speaker 6: See.
- 21:44Speaker 1: He threw me off the set. I should have gone
- 21:45Speaker 1: after their travel story, Craig.
- 21:47Speaker 8: That was on me.
- 21:50Speaker 7: Oh, listen. Roger Walla sent me photos. I asked Cam to.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Do it, but I think he was too busy eating
- 21:57Speaker 3: the sumptuous meal they laid out, because you and I
- 21:59Speaker 3: know campam packed away the groceries.
- 22:03Speaker 7: Eddie Rine says he's.
- 22:04Speaker 3: On the old knife and fourteen, so he might have
- 22:09Speaker 3: been too busy eating to take photos.
- 22:11Speaker 7: But Rogers sent me photos and that.
- 22:13Speaker 3: Was a really impressive place what Vick Shaper had the
- 22:18Speaker 3: entire team there for their teen meal last night, and
- 22:23Speaker 3: it was a really impressive site. And hopefully it works
- 22:27Speaker 3: out well and they're ready to go tonight in their
- 22:29Speaker 3: matchup at Mississippi State.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Yes, sir, we will start highlighting some of that later
- 22:35Speaker 1: in the show. His name is Craig Wag's the voice
- 22:37Speaker 1: of Longhorns. His name's on the show and he's a
- 22:39Speaker 1: good buddy of ours. Craig, thank you so much. We'll
- 22:41Speaker 1: talk to you tomorrow as you head to Vegas.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Hey, yeah, we're gonna tell people a couple of things.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Longring Weekly Tonay with Robbie Terriot Pluckers at six o'clock,
- 22:52Speaker 3: So we'll have that and then I race to the airport.
- 22:57Speaker 3: A touch of Black the Vegas and I'll check on
- 23:00Speaker 3: d tomorrow from Las Vegas as the Longmoort baseball team
- 23:02Speaker 3: prepares to play Washington.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Perfect. Thank you so much, Craig.
- 23:09Speaker 7: Thanks Jim.
- 23:11Speaker 1: All right, we'll have more coming up next on sports
- 23:14Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Good afternoon, Austin Andrews,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and we'll filling in for Craig Way on the airwaves
- 23:20Speaker 1: of Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Make sure
- 23:24Speaker 1: you check us out on the free and you'll improved
- 23:26Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app as well. Make sure you set us as
- 23:31Speaker 1: a pre set. You can have the show start with
- 23:33Speaker 1: you as well. Two to five Craigway's show seven to
- 23:37Speaker 1: nine every day the morning kickoff with Mike Cardball Hart
- 23:41Speaker 1: and Mark Henry the world's Strongest man with the world's
- 23:45Speaker 1: strongest takes. And I'll tell you there's no better way
- 23:48Speaker 1: to start your morning than with those two guys. I
- 23:51Speaker 1: every morning I turn them on. When I'm I get
- 23:54Speaker 1: done working out, I'm getting in the shower, I throw
- 23:56Speaker 1: them on and it's a laugh a minute. I cannot
- 24:00Speaker 1: enough how much you need to check the showut. You
- 24:02Speaker 1: can also check out the podcast version of the show
- 24:04Speaker 1: as well on that free iHeartRadio app. Our Number two
- 24:08Speaker 1: of the Craig Waves show continues as UT men's basketball
- 24:11Speaker 1: loses a tight one in Arkansas last night eighty six
- 24:15Speaker 1: eighty one. We'll hear from head coach Rodney Terry. Will
- 24:18Speaker 1: also hear from assistant coach for the Razorbacks, Kenny Payne,
- 24:22Speaker 1: who gave a lot of love to freshman phenom Trey Johnson.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Johnson broke the Kevin Durant freshman single games scoring record
- 24:31Speaker 1: last night with thirty nine. And everybody I'm talking to
- 24:34Speaker 1: across my network of people when it comes to NBA
- 24:38Speaker 1: draft stuff, I'm a big draft nerd in that way.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Everybody's telling me that Trey Johnson is continuing to climb
- 24:44Speaker 1: up on all of their mocks. The question then turns
- 24:47Speaker 1: into who ends up with the lottery pick that gets him.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Cooper Flag is the consensus number one overall pick. But
- 24:53Speaker 1: if you know how these things work, every year, when
- 24:55Speaker 1: we get closer and closer to draft time, we want
- 24:58Speaker 1: to make the argument, well should we get this guy
- 25:00Speaker 1: this guy? So don't be surprised if you see some
- 25:03Speaker 1: mock drafts when we get closer to the NBA Draft
- 25:05Speaker 1: they have Trey Johnson going top two, top three. I'm
- 25:09Speaker 1: just saying, don't be shocked. It's a quarterback battle at
- 25:13Speaker 1: the NFL Combine. One guy's throwing, one guy isn't our
- 25:17Speaker 1: guy is. Queen Ewers will be throwing, and according to
- 25:20Speaker 1: reports yesterday, spoken with the Dallas Cowboys, which is kind
- 25:23Speaker 1: of interesting when you think about what the Cowboys organization
- 25:27Speaker 1: is trying to do. Obviously, the Cleveland Browns signed Deshaun
- 25:32Speaker 1: Watson to an awful contract that is now rippling through
- 25:35Speaker 1: their organization to the point where Miles Garrett doesn't want
- 25:38Speaker 1: to be there anymore. What is the Dallas Cowboys doing
- 25:42Speaker 1: talking to Queen Yours? Is that the move in the
- 25:45Speaker 1: first round? Do they think they'll fall or are the
- 25:47Speaker 1: Cowboys going to be strategically aggressive like Stephen Jones has
- 25:53Speaker 1: hinted towards. Are they gonna be strategically aggressive and go
- 25:56Speaker 1: after Quinn? Could you see the Cowboys trying to trade
- 25:58Speaker 1: up for multiple first round picks? Is Micah Parsons on
- 26:01Speaker 1: the trade block? All these things swirling around As Day
- 26:04Speaker 1: one of the NFL Combine continues today, we hear from
- 26:07Speaker 1: Vic Shaffer later as well, the head coach of the
- 26:10Speaker 1: women's team. He gives us an inside angle at his daughter,
- 26:13Speaker 1: Blair Schaeffer, her career to this point and is she
- 26:18Speaker 1: going to be a head coach one day we hear
- 26:20Speaker 1: from the head coach with the women's basketball program, but
- 26:22Speaker 1: let's talk baseball. UT baseball, huge win the other night
- 26:28Speaker 1: against Incarnate Word. They continue to roll at home. They're
- 26:32Speaker 1: now going on the road, taking on the Las Vegas Classic.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It's a big ten sandwich, we're gonna call it because
- 26:38Speaker 1: we have Washington at to start Illinois on a Sunday,
- 26:42Speaker 1: and in between it's Texas Tech. Now head coach Jim
- 26:47Speaker 1: shlast Angle. He knows his way around UNLV. He started
- 26:51Speaker 1: his career there and he was asked yesterday during media availability,
- 26:58Speaker 1: what does he remember about UNLV.
- 27:03Speaker 9: Well, I'm not as familiar as Vegas. It's been a
- 27:05Speaker 9: long time since they've been back there. It was a
- 27:07Speaker 9: much different city even in two thousand and two and
- 27:10Speaker 9: three than it is today.
- 27:11Speaker 5: But awesome memories of first head coaching job.
- 27:15Speaker 9: And inheriting an awesome group of players and a group
- 27:20Speaker 9: of really young players from right there in Vegas that
- 27:24Speaker 9: had one estate championship at Silverada High School and they
- 27:26Speaker 9: all decided to go to UNLV and we had an
- 27:29Speaker 9: awesome transformation. First year we were thirty and thirty and
- 27:32Speaker 9: the next year I think you're like forty seven and
- 27:35Speaker 9: fourteen or forty seven and seventeen something like that, won
- 27:37Speaker 9: two conference championships, played in regional final, and just have
- 27:41Speaker 9: incredible relationships with those kids to this day.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So Jim Slashtangle very humble when a coach. You know,
- 27:52Speaker 1: oh maybe I remember, maybe I don't. The record. They
- 27:54Speaker 1: remember the record. Everybody remembers your first head coaching job
- 27:58Speaker 1: UNLV and your number one, thirty and thirty, which was
- 28:01Speaker 1: a step up from the year prior UNLV three.
- 28:04Speaker 2: He believe it's been twenty years.
- 28:06Speaker 1: O three, forty seven and seventeen gets them to the
- 28:09Speaker 1: NCAA Region and that is when regionals, and that is
- 28:12Speaker 1: when his career really takes off. If you remember, he
- 28:16Speaker 1: jumps from UNLV to TCU and was the head coach
- 28:20Speaker 1: when the Frogs transitioned from the Mountained West Conference into
- 28:25Speaker 1: the Big Twelve where they went to not one, not
- 28:28Speaker 1: to but four consecutive College World Series. Yeah, then goes
- 28:34Speaker 1: to Texas A and M, and there is a College
- 28:35Speaker 1: World Series runner up last year before going to Texas.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Now there is James Sloshnengles resume. Obviously, if you're a
- 28:42Speaker 1: fan of the Texas baseball program, you know that already.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Though what did you.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Learn in your first two years though coach your first
- 28:50Speaker 1: head coaching job at the Division one level?
- 28:54Speaker 5: I mean I learned a lot.
- 28:55Speaker 6: You know.
- 28:56Speaker 9: The beauty of that versus today's world is, you know,
- 28:59Speaker 9: you you get to screw up a lot when you're
- 29:01Speaker 9: at your first job, and not too many people pay
- 29:04Speaker 9: attention to it, and not you know, people weren't recording
- 29:08Speaker 9: every single thing that happens, like happens at a place
- 29:11Speaker 9: like Texas or A and M or TCU. So just
- 29:16Speaker 9: really learned how to run a program from a thirty
- 29:20Speaker 9: six thousand foot view. I had watched my mentor at TWU,
- 29:25Speaker 9: Lane Rick Jones do it, but to do it yourself
- 29:28Speaker 9: is a whole nother thing. And then had the luxury
- 29:30Speaker 9: of working for he just passed away. But coach John Robinson,
- 29:34Speaker 9: he was a great coach at USC Hall of Fame
- 29:36Speaker 9: football coach.
- 29:36Speaker 5: He was my athletic director. He was the football coach
- 29:40Speaker 5: and the AD.
- 29:41Speaker 9: So just to have awesome stories with Coach rob But
- 29:45Speaker 9: then just learn you know how to run a program
- 29:48Speaker 9: and everything that goes with it.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Andrew's a little filliated for Craig Way. We're listening to
- 29:53Speaker 1: a head coach from Slowsnagle from media availability yesterday as
- 29:57Speaker 1: a University of Texas gets ready to travel to Las Vegas,
- 30:01Speaker 1: Nevada the City of sin as they take on the
- 30:04Speaker 1: Las Vegas Classic, which would be Washington, Texas Tech Illinois
- 30:09Speaker 1: in that order of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Now, Ethan
- 30:13Speaker 1: Mendoza has been the talk of the forty Acres this season.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Early this year, the sophomore has been kind of all
- 30:20Speaker 1: over the lineup for Texas, goes from the ninth spot
- 30:24Speaker 1: all the way to leading off in that win against
- 30:27Speaker 1: Incarnate Word. Oh and by the way, hit his first
- 30:30Speaker 1: home run of the season in that win against Incarnate
- 30:32Speaker 1: Word as well. Are you going to stick with him
- 30:35Speaker 1: their coach batting high in the order at number one,
- 30:37Speaker 1: or is he going to be somebody that you moved
- 30:39Speaker 1: back in the order during this Classic.
- 30:42Speaker 9: I we'll probably stick with it for a little bit
- 30:44Speaker 9: and see what happens. I think, you know, it's a
- 30:46Speaker 9: constant juggling act, trying to figure out who can do what,
- 30:49Speaker 9: who's comfortable where. We have some guys that are certainly
- 30:53Speaker 9: capable of performing, you know, at a higher level than
- 30:56Speaker 9: they are currently in.
- 30:57Speaker 5: Terms of results.
- 30:59Speaker 9: The the work ethic and all of that has been amazing.
- 31:04Speaker 5: If anything, we just need him to relax a little
- 31:05Speaker 5: bit and play. But yeah, I just.
- 31:08Speaker 9: Try to take a little pressure off shooter, give him
- 31:10Speaker 9: a chance to watch the game a little bit, slide
- 31:12Speaker 9: a few guys.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Mendoza's getting on base.
- 31:16Speaker 9: He's the player that he showed up here as the
- 31:19Speaker 9: player that really we really want him to be.
- 31:21Speaker 5: He's really buying into that.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And as.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I watch him evolve, then.
- 31:30Speaker 9: You can see what he's capable of, which is hitting
- 31:32Speaker 9: the lead off on a potentially good team.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Yeah, through nineteen and bats this season, Mendoza batting four
- 31:41Speaker 1: twenty one with two home runs and a cup four
- 31:45Speaker 1: RBIs as well, So not too shabby for the south
- 31:49Speaker 1: leg Carol Alump, Now, how important coach is it to
- 31:54Speaker 1: have players that you can move around in the order.
- 31:56Speaker 1: You can get a guy like Mendoza and put him
- 31:57Speaker 1: in the ninth spot, or you can move him up
- 31:59Speaker 1: at number one.
- 32:00Speaker 2: How important is that?
- 32:02Speaker 5: Well?
- 32:02Speaker 9: Ideally, ideally, well, hopefully they're interchangeable in a good way.
- 32:06Speaker 5: But ideally you would want that.
- 32:08Speaker 9: You know the best teams, I've our best offenses I've
- 32:10Speaker 9: ever coached, you could or been around coach, and you
- 32:13Speaker 9: can flip them upside down and you feel good about
- 32:15Speaker 9: it on that day.
- 32:15Speaker 5: But I think when we're right, which.
- 32:19Speaker 9: Like every every coach sees at least, I see the
- 32:21Speaker 9: best in our players and I envision the best in
- 32:23Speaker 9: them every day. So I'm cool with the lineup in
- 32:28Speaker 9: any direction. But we have to live in reality, and
- 32:32Speaker 9: guys have to continue to get better and right now,
- 32:34Speaker 9: Ethan be up there at the top.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Now.
- 32:37Speaker 1: In that win against in Carnate where the Longhorns were
- 32:40Speaker 1: able to throw a couple of arms at the Cardinals,
- 32:44Speaker 1: they pitched four pitchers, starting with Jason Flores, who did
- 32:48Speaker 1: an incredible job in his first collegiate start, was able
- 32:53Speaker 1: to go three up, three down twice and then got
- 32:56Speaker 1: an ending double play. Do you expect the rotation to same,
- 33:00Speaker 1: stay the same coach this weekend?
- 33:04Speaker 5: I do.
- 33:05Speaker 9: I don't see any reason why we would change it.
- 33:07Speaker 9: Having Cat's felt fine since throwing, and less something pops up,
- 33:13Speaker 9: we'll leave it the same way.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta love that University of Texas plays in
- 33:19Speaker 1: the Las Vegas Classic this weekend. You can hear those
- 33:22Speaker 1: games right here on the zone. Our man Craig Way
- 33:25Speaker 1: will be on the call. He's all over the place
- 33:27Speaker 1: doing Pluckers tonight on the West Campus location, talking to
- 33:31Speaker 1: head coach Rodney Terry for the Coaches Show, then jumping
- 33:35Speaker 1: a flight and heading out to Vegas. And I'm not
- 33:38Speaker 1: glad that we're gonna get Craig on the calls. If
- 33:41Speaker 1: you've listened to the station, you hear the promos playing
- 33:44Speaker 1: for a University of Texas baseball. He has an incredible
- 33:48Speaker 1: home run call. We need to get a couple more
- 33:50Speaker 1: of those in the can. I want to play one
- 33:54Speaker 1: more clip here, Ronald, our incredible producer back in Austin.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I want to ask about Ethan and Die because Max
- 34:00Speaker 1: Grubbs got a good answer yesterday when asked, this is
- 34:03Speaker 1: Grubbs two.
- 34:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and you can expect more of it.
- 34:09Speaker 9: I think he's a really good player, and I like
- 34:11Speaker 9: the way that he plays the game.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I'm really glad to have we have a team on
- 34:17Speaker 1: the forty Acres that already seven games in feels very connected,
- 34:22Speaker 1: which is very important when it comes to the game
- 34:24Speaker 1: of baseball. Anybody will tell us play the game at
- 34:27Speaker 1: the highest levels will tell you that the locker room camaraderie,
- 34:30Speaker 1: having all those guys on the same page, it's not easy.
- 34:33Speaker 1: It's not something that you just wake up one morning
- 34:36Speaker 1: and everybody loves each other.
- 34:37Speaker 2: And it takes time.
- 34:39Speaker 1: When head coach Jim Slosnegel came from A and M
- 34:42Speaker 1: to Texas, yeah, you talk about all of the success
- 34:45Speaker 1: he's had everywhere else, but you talk about the locker
- 34:48Speaker 1: room culture that he has been able to build at
- 34:51Speaker 1: every stop he's had along the way. That is one
- 34:53Speaker 1: of those intangible things that you get out of your
- 34:56Speaker 1: head coach. When we come back speaking of head coaches,
- 34:58Speaker 1: Vic Schaeffer Women's backasketball head coach Spoke gives us a
- 35:01Speaker 1: little insight on what we can expect tonight as the
- 35:04Speaker 1: women's basketball team travels so Starkville to take on the
- 35:09Speaker 1: Mississippi State team. We'll have that for you next right
- 35:12Speaker 1: here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Hundred The Zone Andrew zim will taking you on your
- 35:19Speaker 1: cattle drive as we work our way through the work
- 35:22Speaker 1: week together and tonight big matchup University of Texas number
- 35:27Speaker 1: one overall team currently in women's basketball. They have that
- 35:33Speaker 1: number one next to their name for the first time
- 35:35Speaker 1: in almost twenty years, and it's very important for this
- 35:39Speaker 1: team to continue to take that momentum that they've already
- 35:42Speaker 1: shown that they've had and keep it moving. That is
- 35:46Speaker 1: the number one thing right now for the or i
- 35:48Speaker 1: should say, for the longest time, the women have been
- 35:51Speaker 1: chasing the number one. Now they are going to be
- 35:54Speaker 1: the team that gets chased, which is big. Texas women's
- 35:58Speaker 1: coach Vick Schaeffer. He was named as the Name of
- 36:00Speaker 1: Women's College Coach of the Year watch list this week.
- 36:03Speaker 1: He's a twenty eighteen National Coach of the Year after
- 36:06Speaker 1: leading teams to the Elite Eight in six of seven
- 36:10Speaker 1: years and ten seasons of twenty five or more wins.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Coach Schaeffer had his media availability yesterday and spoke about
- 36:20Speaker 1: the matchup tonight against Mississippi State.
- 36:26Speaker 10: Well, just really proud of our team last night.
- 36:29Speaker 6: You know, it's always.
- 36:30Speaker 10: Hard on the road, you know, lots obviously lots going
- 36:36Speaker 10: on and lots of potential distractions, and yet they were
- 36:41Speaker 10: able to go in there and persevere on a night
- 36:44Speaker 10: when we didn't shoot it that well. For three quarters,
- 36:46Speaker 10: shot sixty four the fourth quarter, but first three quarters
- 36:49Speaker 10: were a bit of a grind.
- 36:50Speaker 6: But our defense was elite.
- 36:53Speaker 10: And once you all think about this now, they went
- 36:56Speaker 10: in there and held the home team in the Southeastern
- 36:58Speaker 10: Conference on their home floor to twenty six total points
- 37:03Speaker 10: for forty minutes.
- 37:04Speaker 6: For two hours.
- 37:05Speaker 10: They absolutely grinded and defended at an elite level, and
- 37:12Speaker 10: I am so proud of them.
- 37:16Speaker 6: To be able to do that.
- 37:17Speaker 10: I don't think I've ever had a team do that
- 37:19Speaker 10: in a conference game, and so and much less do it,
- 37:24Speaker 10: you know, on.
- 37:25Speaker 6: The the opponent's home floor.
- 37:26Speaker 10: So you know, sometimes on the road, y'all those things happen,
- 37:30Speaker 10: you don't shoot it quite as well. But that's why
- 37:32Speaker 10: we always talk about defense travels. You got to have
- 37:35Speaker 10: an inside game, and we did. I thought Kyla and
- 37:39Speaker 10: Taylor were much better in the second half. We weren't
- 37:41Speaker 10: very good first half. They were two for seven at halftime,
- 37:44Speaker 10: but came back and ended up ten for nineteen. So
- 37:50Speaker 10: again I thought we had some kids really step up
- 37:52Speaker 10: play well. I think, you know, we just sometimes it
- 37:56Speaker 10: takes that. And again, when you're not maybe not making shop,
- 38:00Speaker 10: you know, house, can you help me win? I thought
- 38:02Speaker 10: we also had some kids do that. So it's a
- 38:05Speaker 10: great win for us again some uncharted territory waters for
- 38:11Speaker 10: you know, for these kids, and uh, to be able
- 38:14Speaker 10: to go out and function and play.
- 38:17Speaker 6: I was really proud of them.
- 38:18Speaker 10: So now we've got to get ready and go on
- 38:20Speaker 10: the road and have another road game. Only have basically
- 38:26Speaker 10: a day back here and we leave out tomorrow. Got
- 38:29Speaker 10: to play a really good Mississippi State team, a team
- 38:33Speaker 10: that's going to be in the NCAA tournament.
- 38:35Speaker 6: Play them on their home floor. I'm sure they'll have
- 38:39Speaker 6: a great crowd.
- 38:41Speaker 10: Those Bulldog fans are so special and uh, you know,
- 38:45Speaker 10: they love their Bulldogs, and so I'm sure they're going
- 38:48Speaker 10: to create a great atmosphere and home court, you know,
- 38:52Speaker 10: advantage for their team. And so we're gonna have to
- 38:54Speaker 10: go in there and play well. It's a team that
- 38:57Speaker 10: has a great size inside, have great guard play, veteran guards,
- 39:02Speaker 10: fifth and six year guards.
- 39:05Speaker 6: So they're a wise old.
- 39:07Speaker 10: Team and so we're gonna have to really go in
- 39:11Speaker 10: there and execute and play extremely well. So, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 10: excited about the opportunity, excited for our team. We're now
- 39:21Speaker 10: down to in my mind, a two game season, and
- 39:25Speaker 10: we've just got to do what we've done all year,
- 39:28Speaker 10: which is being the present, be where your feet are.
- 39:31Speaker 10: The most important thing is today. The most important practice
- 39:35Speaker 10: is today's practice. Can we get one percent incrementally better
- 39:38Speaker 10: today than we were yesterday? And at the same time,
- 39:42Speaker 10: we've got to prepare with intentionality, which we've done a
- 39:46Speaker 10: great job of, and get ready to play a really
- 39:50Speaker 10: good Mississippi State team in their gym.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Sports Radio Am thirteen hundred the zone. That was head
- 39:56Speaker 1: coach Vic Shaeffer talking about the lead up this game
- 40:00Speaker 1: and then playing tonight against Mississippi State. Now it's a
- 40:03Speaker 1: family affair tonight. As of course, Schaeffer play or coached
- 40:07Speaker 1: for a number of years at Mississippi State, but his daughter,
- 40:11Speaker 1: Blair Schaeffer, also was a member of that program. In fact,
- 40:15Speaker 1: one of the largest most important classes ever was her class,
- 40:22Speaker 1: part of the winning's class in program history. As a
- 40:24Speaker 1: senior class posted a one, twenty six, and twenty two
- 40:28Speaker 1: record over the four years. There were a national finances
- 40:31Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen, and they made the
- 40:33Speaker 1: NCAA Tournament every single year. She also helped leave Mississippi
- 40:39Speaker 1: State to the first trip to the final four national championship.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Your role expanded as a senior started all thirty nine games,
- 40:47Speaker 1: was a three point specialist. She was of course all
- 40:50Speaker 1: academic honor roll. She then went to ESPN, the se'sc network,
- 40:54Speaker 1: before now coming back to Austin to be part of
- 40:57Speaker 1: this program. Now, head coach Vick Shaeffer's spoke about Blair's
- 41:01Speaker 1: want to be a head coach.
- 41:03Speaker 2: This is Shaeffer number eight.
- 41:06Speaker 10: Yeah, I think there'll be a day when when I
- 41:09Speaker 10: decide to not do it, there'll be a day when
- 41:11Speaker 10: she'll want to be a head coach. But I think
- 41:13Speaker 10: she embraces her role right now. She really loves recruiting,
- 41:18Speaker 10: She loves the kids, she loves spending time with them and.
- 41:22Speaker 6: Pouring into them.
- 41:23Speaker 10: And she's, you know, just as my entire staff is.
- 41:26Speaker 6: They're all really good at that.
- 41:28Speaker 10: And so but yeah, I think that, And again I
- 41:33Speaker 10: think I think she'll be a great one.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Andrews, I will fill in for Crags.
- 41:38Speaker 1: So when we go through Vic Shaeffer's career before his
- 41:43Speaker 1: final stop hopefully for his career at Texas, and I
- 41:46Speaker 1: want him to coach here as long as humanly possible
- 41:49Speaker 1: for the success that he's had at in the forty era.
- 41:52Speaker 1: On the forty acres you go through and look at
- 41:54Speaker 1: his time at Mississippi State one twenty two and sixty
- 41:57Speaker 1: two in that time more multiple runner up up here,
- 42:03Speaker 1: multiple multiple NCAA appearances, a tournament and Elite Eight appearance.
- 42:08Speaker 1: All of that being said, So when you talk about
- 42:12Speaker 1: somebody like this, what do you expect the reception to
- 42:15Speaker 1: be after leaving Mississippi State after the twenty twenty season,
- 42:19Speaker 1: what do you expect the reception to be?
- 42:21Speaker 2: Coach?
- 42:23Speaker 10: Well, I don't know how it's I don't know if
- 42:25Speaker 10: you'd call it excited.
- 42:26Speaker 6: I don't.
- 42:26Speaker 10: I don't get too fired up by going on the
- 42:28Speaker 10: road in the SEC. But you know, obviously we have
- 42:32Speaker 10: so many special friends there still to this day, and
- 42:36Speaker 10: you know, such fond memories.
- 42:38Speaker 6: You know, I've said this a lot.
- 42:40Speaker 10: Those eight years that we spent there, the eight best
- 42:42Speaker 10: years of the Shaeffer family's lives. Both of my kids
- 42:45Speaker 10: are graduates Mississippi State.
- 42:47Speaker 6: They're bulldogs. You know.
- 42:50Speaker 10: We just had so much great fun, great success there
- 42:56Speaker 10: and again still have so many good friends there. And
- 43:00Speaker 10: it's not just the people at Mississippi State, it's that
- 43:02Speaker 10: state in general, y'all, like that is the most genuine, caring,
- 43:08Speaker 10: loving state.
- 43:09Speaker 6: The people from.
- 43:12Speaker 10: North Mississippi, Olive Branch, all the way down to the
- 43:15Speaker 10: Delta and all the way down to Biloxi and Gulf.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Port, I mean, anywhere you go.
- 43:22Speaker 10: They just really embraced me, my family, my team, and
- 43:27Speaker 10: so there's so many fond memories of our time there,
- 43:31Speaker 10: and obviously it's a place that we still hold.
- 43:33Speaker 6: Dear to our heart.
- 43:34Speaker 10: I still have my farm there where we built our
- 43:37Speaker 10: dream home. I've additionally bought another farm thirty minutes from there.
- 43:42Speaker 10: That's beautiful country, and so it's a place that's still
- 43:47Speaker 10: we still en dear to ourselves, and it's so special
- 43:50Speaker 10: to us and it will always be that for us
- 43:54Speaker 10: because again, we still have so many wonderful friends there.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone Andrews and we
- 44:02Speaker 1: will fill you in for Crag now. He talks about
- 44:04Speaker 1: how nice of a vibe it is, how is excited
- 44:08Speaker 1: to go back, how connected he is to the community
- 44:11Speaker 1: community in Mississippi. Coach, do you expect to shed any
- 44:16Speaker 1: tears tonight?
- 44:19Speaker 10: You know, I'm sure it'll be emotional, But for me,
- 44:21Speaker 10: I've got I've got a heck of a team that
- 44:23Speaker 10: I got to go in there and try to win
- 44:25Speaker 10: a road game.
- 44:26Speaker 6: You know, that's that's it for me.
- 44:29Speaker 10: I've got to I've got to go in there and
- 44:31Speaker 10: we my team's got to go in there, and we
- 44:33Speaker 10: got to be tough. You know, it's going to be
- 44:35Speaker 10: I'm sure it'll be a really good environment. It's a
- 44:37Speaker 10: heck of a team we're gonna have to play and
- 44:40Speaker 10: certainly we we've got a lot of fond memories there
- 44:43Speaker 10: and there's no dispute in that. But at the end
- 44:45Speaker 10: of the day, it's a business trip and you know,
- 44:48Speaker 10: I'm going in there with my team, with the number
- 44:51Speaker 10: one team in the country, and we got to try
- 44:53Speaker 10: to find a way to win a word game.
- 44:55Speaker 1: That is correct six point thirty Tonight, you can hear
- 44:59Speaker 1: the game on the iHeartRadio app on one O three
- 45:02Speaker 1: one FM, Starkfield, Mississippi. Cameron Parker will be on the
- 45:06Speaker 1: call for that is number one Texas travels to Mississippi State.
- 45:09Speaker 1: When we come back, they're telling us it's a two
- 45:12Speaker 1: quarterback draft. Is it really just between cam Ward and
- 45:16Speaker 1: schidor Sanders or could Texas's quarterback quin Viewers slip in
- 45:21Speaker 1: there as well.
- 45:21Speaker 2: We'll talk about that next. Craig Waits show continues.
- 45:24Speaker 1: In a moment, Andrew Zim will fill in for Craig
- 45:26Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Sports Radio AM
- 45:30Speaker 1: thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrew Zim will filling in for
- 45:33Speaker 1: Craig Way as we work our way through the workweek twogether. Well,
- 45:38Speaker 1: they're telling us that it is a two quarterback draft,
- 45:41Speaker 1: at least that's what mel Kiper Junior Field yates, all
- 45:46Speaker 1: of the muckety MUCKs, all the draft experts are telling
- 45:50Speaker 1: us it's a two quarterback draft, but it could end
- 45:52Speaker 1: up being a larger QB draft do in part because
- 45:57Speaker 1: there are quarterbacks in the NFL that the teams are
- 46:00Speaker 1: not very happy with, starting with Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis. Now,
- 46:05Speaker 1: last year you heard the story about him quitting on
- 46:08Speaker 1: his team. He was exhausted, he was out of shape,
- 46:10Speaker 1: out of breath, and the colt said, you know what,
- 46:13Speaker 1: We're gonna sit you down and we're gonna play a
- 46:15Speaker 1: veteran quarterback ahead of you. Was not the best look
- 46:19Speaker 1: for Anthony Richardson. Well, Chris Ballard at the Combined earlier
- 46:23Speaker 1: this week, the Combine begins today with guys actually doing things.
- 46:27Speaker 1: The underwear Olympics is what it's called by some Chris
- 46:33Speaker 1: Ballard spoke about where Anthony Richardson isn't what the team
- 46:38Speaker 1: is thinking about.
- 46:41Speaker 11: We drafted Anthony Hie knowing it was going to take
- 46:44Speaker 11: some time, all right, and we knew there's going to
- 46:46Speaker 11: be some hiccups along the way. And it's you know,
- 46:51Speaker 11: I know, we all want to finish product right now.
- 46:53Speaker 3: I do you do?
- 46:55Speaker 8: Fans?
- 46:55Speaker 2: Do we all do?
- 46:57Speaker 11: But I think as he continues to progress in his
- 47:00Speaker 11: young career, US adding competition, I think will help up
- 47:05Speaker 11: everybody's skin.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Which would make me very nervous if I was a
- 47:09Speaker 1: Colts fan, because what do you mean you want to
- 47:12Speaker 1: add competition to what is already a young QB room. Now,
- 47:18Speaker 1: Richardson's twenty two years old, so you would imagine that
- 47:21Speaker 1: they probably are thinking about adding somebody a little older.
- 47:24Speaker 1: But I would not put it out of the realm
- 47:26Speaker 1: of possibility that the Colts maybe trade back or maybe
- 47:29Speaker 1: trade for an older QB. It seems like Indianapolis has
- 47:33Speaker 1: turned into the home of the old guys, the retirement
- 47:37Speaker 1: home four quarterbacks. You think about what Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco.
- 47:41Speaker 1: The list goes on and on about guys who at
- 47:44Speaker 1: the end of their career, the tail end at least,
- 47:47Speaker 1: are trying to, you know, maybe make one more run
- 47:50Speaker 1: at this thing in Indianapolis. It makes me a little
- 47:54Speaker 1: nervous if I was a Colts fan again that a
- 47:56Speaker 1: twenty two year old quarterback who we love does not
- 48:00Speaker 1: seem to have the right work ethic or the right
- 48:03Speaker 1: love of the game. So the reason I bring all
- 48:05Speaker 1: this up is it makes sense for quarterbacks to go
- 48:10Speaker 1: very quickly in this draft. We see it happened last year.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I didn't wasn't in love with the quarterback draft last year. Now,
- 48:15Speaker 1: Caleb Williams and Jade and Daniels both turned out to
- 48:17Speaker 1: be very good, but Michael Pennix didn't really play, but
- 48:21Speaker 1: Nick's surprised some people. And James McCarthy was injured in
- 48:24Speaker 1: the preseason, so the jury is still out on last
- 48:26Speaker 1: year's quarterback draft. But they went very quickly and very high.
- 48:31Speaker 1: But then you talk about the top two qbs, cam
- 48:34Speaker 1: Ward and Shador Sanders now Field Yates pretty much said
- 48:37Speaker 1: it's a two quarterback competition at the combine this year
- 48:41Speaker 1: for the guys he was speaking with.
- 48:44Speaker 12: Yeah, the first three picks in the draft are going
- 48:46Speaker 12: to be busy with quarterbacks. I believe cam Ward ends
- 48:48Speaker 12: up as a Cleveland Brown number two overall. Reminder that
- 48:52Speaker 12: Shaun Watson is going to be out for almost certainly
- 48:54Speaker 12: the entirety of this year, and then in twenty twenty six,
- 48:57Speaker 12: his money is nothing more than a lost cause. Cam
- 49:00Speaker 12: Moore to Cleveland, and then Shador Sanders, who won't have
- 49:03Speaker 12: to wait a whole lot longer, going to the New
- 49:05Speaker 12: York Giants who owned the pick. The third pick overall,
- 49:07Speaker 12: we've talked about the possibility of Matthew Stafford trade. I
- 49:10Speaker 12: still believe the Giants need to think about a young quarterback.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Long and hard. He goes to the Big Apple.
- 49:15Speaker 1: So if Yates has cam Ward going number one or
- 49:19Speaker 1: number two, I'm sorry to the Cleveland Browns and Chador
- 49:22Speaker 1: going number three to the New York Giants. And then
- 49:25Speaker 1: Mele Kuiper has something similar. He says that war goes
- 49:29Speaker 1: number two to the Browns and number seven the New
- 49:32Speaker 1: York Jets select Shador Sanders. So either way, Chador is
- 49:35Speaker 1: playing in the Big Apple. But then you go through
- 49:37Speaker 1: the rest of the quarterbacks Jackson Dart, Dylan Gabriel, Quinn Eewers.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Some of these guys are going to end up going
- 49:44Speaker 1: in the first round and it's going to surprise a
- 49:46Speaker 1: lot of people. And I am putting my flag down now.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I'm planting it today that Quinn Viewers will be the
- 49:51Speaker 1: quarterback that surprises the most people come combined time now
- 49:56Speaker 1: and come NFL Draft in April. That this is a
- 49:58Speaker 1: guy who, according to reports, played the entire season with
- 50:02Speaker 1: torn oblique Okay, when we talk about the throws that
- 50:07Speaker 1: he was able to make this season being banged up
- 50:10Speaker 1: and injured. Last year he dealt with an ankle injury.
- 50:12Speaker 1: This year is dealing with a core injury, and the
- 50:14Speaker 1: way that he still was able to compete, there's no
- 50:16Speaker 1: question at this point. There's no question about his work ethic,
- 50:20Speaker 1: about his try and his drive. We love to hear
- 50:24Speaker 1: stories about guys who played through injury. Right, There's a
- 50:27Speaker 1: difference between being injured and hurt. Every single coach will
- 50:29Speaker 1: tell you that if you're hurt, you can play through it.
- 50:31Speaker 1: If you're injured, we need to put you on the IR.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I think in oblique injury for most would put them
- 50:37Speaker 1: on the ir not quin Yours, who, according to reports,
- 50:41Speaker 1: torres oblique in the Michigan game first game of the season,
- 50:46Speaker 1: played the entire rest of the year with a banged
- 50:49Speaker 1: up corps and was able to make incredible throws throughout
- 50:52Speaker 1: the end of the season the SEC championship game. And
- 50:54Speaker 1: then you think about the playoffs. I am very high
- 50:58Speaker 1: on what we are going to see out of Quinn.
- 51:00Speaker 1: And then you go through the list of teams who
- 51:03Speaker 1: might need a quarterback, and all of a sudden, it's hey,
- 51:06Speaker 1: how happy are the Dallas Cowboys with their quarterback situation?
- 51:11Speaker 1: The Las Vegas Raiders? How were happier they at their
- 51:14Speaker 1: quarterback situation? Now you saw earlier this week that Tom
- 51:19Speaker 1: Brady and Matthew Stafford just happened to be skiing with
- 51:23Speaker 1: each other, just just happened to see each other on
- 51:26Speaker 1: the slopes. If you are buying that, I have a
- 51:29Speaker 1: bridge to sell you. There's no way that any of
- 51:31Speaker 1: this just happens by happenstance. But the Raiders are a
- 51:34Speaker 1: team that could be looking for a quarterback. How happy
- 51:37Speaker 1: are the Cardinals? How the list goes on and on
- 51:40Speaker 1: and on. There are going to be teams that think
- 51:42Speaker 1: to themselves when you see the quarterbacks available, When Shador
- 51:46Speaker 1: and camp borderre off the board that talk themselves into
- 51:49Speaker 1: some guys, do not be surprised. Do not be surprised
- 51:55Speaker 1: when you see the reports that continue to come out
- 51:58Speaker 1: that there are going to be teams who were going
- 52:00Speaker 1: to be drafting a quarterback. And I'm telling you Quinn
- 52:03Speaker 1: will be the guy who jumps the highest on these boards.
- 52:07Speaker 1: Mel Kiper currently has him as QB nine after the
- 52:11Speaker 1: combine going into next week. Do not be surprised if
- 52:13Speaker 1: he's as high as QB three. Let's talk Philadelphia Eagles now.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Jeremy Fowler reported earlier this week about a team that's
- 52:23Speaker 1: already rich at the defensive position going after maybe the
- 52:28Speaker 1: best defensive player ever to go on the market.
- 52:31Speaker 2: This is Jerry Fowler Garrett.
- 52:32Speaker 13: Let's hear it connecting some dots here, admittedly, but this
- 52:36Speaker 13: is a conversation that some people in the league have
- 52:38Speaker 13: had that the Philadelphia Eagles, one of the most aggressive,
- 52:41Speaker 13: if not the most aggressive teams on the trade market,
- 52:43Speaker 13: will be looking for a pass rusher Josh Sweat and
- 52:46Speaker 13: the Super Bowl likely or close MVP could be out
- 52:49Speaker 13: the expectations that he will sign elsewhere, So they're going
- 52:52Speaker 13: to have a need there Miles Garrett. They would not
- 52:55Speaker 13: want to see him go to the Washington Commanders, for example,
- 52:58Speaker 13: if that was to gain traction, Roseman would likely step
- 53:01Speaker 13: in try to make a deal that is too hard
- 53:04Speaker 13: for the Cleveland Browns to refuse. Keep it in mind here,
- 53:06Speaker 13: the Browns are a hard no. They're still telling teams
- 53:09Speaker 13: they have no interest in trading Miles Garrett. If you
- 53:11Speaker 13: were to become available, several teams will be in that.
- 53:14Speaker 13: Maybe the Eagles will be won.
- 53:16Speaker 1: So Howie Roseman might have to step in and make
- 53:21Speaker 1: a deal, a godfather offer to make sure that Miles
- 53:25Speaker 1: Garrett doesn't end up somewhere else But if you're the
- 53:27Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns, you have the number two overall pick. Maybe Garrett,
- 53:32Speaker 1: how bad does he actually want to get out? The
- 53:34Speaker 1: Combined is the beginning of the NFL season. It's not
- 53:37Speaker 1: the NFL Draft. The Combined is where the deals are made.
- 53:41Speaker 1: There's GMS all over the place, assistant GMS, media reporters.
- 53:46Speaker 1: I'm telling you this is where the deals are getting done.
- 53:49Speaker 1: If Garrett does end up getting moved, it's going to
- 53:51Speaker 1: be a deal that began discussion this week in Indianapolis
- 53:56Speaker 1: on Sports Radio and thirteen hundred of The Zone Sports Radio.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I am thirteen hundred The Zone Andrews and will fill
- 54:03Speaker 1: in for Craig Way. All this week is Craig travels
- 54:06Speaker 1: about Tonight he will be at the West Campus Locallycation
- 54:11Speaker 1: Pluckers for the Coaches Show with Roddy Terry. That is
- 54:15Speaker 1: happening tonight, go over there, check it out. And then
- 54:19Speaker 1: tomorrow travels to Sin City, Las Vegas, Nevada, as the
- 54:25Speaker 1: Texas Longhorn baseball team has the Las Vegas Classic on
- 54:29Speaker 1: the schedule, taking on Washington Friday, Texas Tech Saturday, and
- 54:32Speaker 1: then Illinois on Sunday. It's nice sandwich of Big ten teams.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Now he really Washington Illinois still hard to put rep
- 54:41Speaker 1: your head around, still hard to figure it out.
- 54:44Speaker 2: And now Texas.
- 54:45Speaker 1: State knocks off number one Texas A and M earlier
- 54:49Speaker 1: this week, and I'm hearing more and more chatter. People
- 54:52Speaker 1: are talking about, Hey, could Texas taco to the zombiefide
- 54:56Speaker 1: PAC twelve? Could that be something that's on the radar?
- 55:00Speaker 1: Oh brother, nothing like watching PAC twelve after dark? Am
- 55:04Speaker 1: I right jam packed? The final hour of the Craigway show,
- 55:09Speaker 1: Travis Hunter speaks from the combine says that he wants
- 55:14Speaker 1: to play both ways.
- 55:15Speaker 2: Is that gonna happen?
- 55:16Speaker 1: Is it likely? Kind of depends on what team drafts him.
- 55:20Speaker 1: And then the Las Vegas Raiders. Ever since the signing
- 55:25Speaker 1: of minority owner Tom Brady, they've made some big moves.
- 55:29Speaker 1: But are they legal? Is Tom Brady taking his cheating
- 55:33Speaker 1: ways out west? We'll talk about it next, But first,
- 55:37Speaker 1: UT women's basketball traveling to Mississippi State tonight as the
- 55:42Speaker 1: number one ranked team in college basketball does battle on
- 55:48Speaker 1: the hardwood. It's gonna be a good one. It's the
- 55:50Speaker 1: final of the road games of the regular season for
- 55:55Speaker 1: the women's team Starkfield tonight and then on Sunday they
- 55:58Speaker 1: finish up the regular season at home against Florida. Now
- 56:02Speaker 1: Florida not a team to play around with, but Texas
- 56:05Speaker 1: has been on a roll since that loss on Super
- 56:08Speaker 1: Bowl Sunday to the South Carolina game Cocks in Columbia.
- 56:12Speaker 1: They are I'm sorry, since that loss in January not
- 56:14Speaker 1: Super Bowls in January. They have rolled off some very
- 56:20Speaker 1: impressive wins fourteen to zero at home, eleven game winning streak.
- 56:25Speaker 1: But don't tell head coach Vick Shaeffer about that he
- 56:28Speaker 1: wants to be focused in on his team. He wants
- 56:33Speaker 1: to continue to keep pushing the game plan now. In
- 56:36Speaker 1: that win against Georgia earlier this week on Monday, a
- 56:41Speaker 1: fifty seven to twenty six win against the Bulldogs, Texas
- 56:45Speaker 1: held Georgia to the lowest points that they have scored
- 56:49Speaker 1: as a program in over a decade. It was twenty
- 56:52Speaker 1: fifteen the last time they scored that few points. But
- 56:55Speaker 1: in that game, it came down to the Fords Vic
- 56:58Speaker 1: Shaeffer's ability to get the players who manned down low,
- 57:03Speaker 1: and it was Taylor Jones who was the player of
- 57:05Speaker 1: the game seventeen points, sixteen rebounds, and five blocks. He
- 57:08Speaker 1: had his media availability and he was asked about what
- 57:11Speaker 1: goes into games? What do you go what goes into games?
- 57:14Speaker 1: Do you think about what you need out of certain positions?
- 57:17Speaker 1: This is shape for four.
- 57:20Speaker 10: I went to it thinking we need this from this position,
- 57:23Speaker 10: and then you go with who's playing well that night,
- 57:25Speaker 10: you know, and you know last night Taylor got a
- 57:29Speaker 10: really quick file and typically I take her out and
- 57:32Speaker 10: put Kyla in immediately, but I didn't and tried to
- 57:35Speaker 10: let her play through it a little bit didn't really
- 57:38Speaker 10: play that much better, went with Kyla.
- 57:40Speaker 6: Neither one of them.
- 57:41Speaker 10: Like I said, we were two for seven and a
- 57:43Speaker 10: half and I really thought we were kind of getting
- 57:45Speaker 10: out tough down there a little bit, to be honest,
- 57:47Speaker 10: and so challenged them in the locker room at halftime.
- 57:50Speaker 10: Second half they were so much better and our guards
- 57:53Speaker 10: were really good about giving them a ball to we
- 57:56Speaker 10: turned them down still like that. I'm going to show
- 57:58Speaker 10: them the day in film where we turned them down.
- 58:00Speaker 10: And you know, we don't need to turn those two down.
- 58:02Speaker 10: When they get two feet in the paint, they got
- 58:04Speaker 10: somebody buried, we need to give them the ball.
- 58:06Speaker 6: So, you know, something we continue to work on.
- 58:08Speaker 10: If you come to practice, like we have a drill
- 58:10Speaker 10: every day, we start with this triangle passing and you
- 58:13Speaker 10: know we work on it every single day. So again,
- 58:17Speaker 10: and you give Georgia credit. They were doing some things
- 58:19Speaker 10: the first half Dublin and really not letting them operate
- 58:22Speaker 10: with very much space, and so we didn't handle every
- 58:25Speaker 10: I mean, we had twelve turnovers at halftime and we
- 58:28Speaker 10: only ended up with sixteen total. But you know, when
- 58:30Speaker 10: you're not shooting well, twelve turnovers is a nightmare. And
- 58:35Speaker 10: we all said it with twenty three offensive rebounds, and
- 58:38Speaker 10: you think about all those extra possessions when you're shooting
- 58:40Speaker 10: thirty percent, and those extra possessions are critical. And so
- 58:45Speaker 10: to get the twenty three offensive rebounds was really big.
- 58:49Speaker 6: I think Taylor had nine of them, Book had five
- 58:51Speaker 6: of them.
- 58:51Speaker 10: I mean those are critical second and third chance points
- 58:54Speaker 10: that you're getting on a night when you're not shooting
- 58:57Speaker 10: it that well.
- 58:58Speaker 6: So again of our kids and finding a way to win.
- 59:02Speaker 10: And again you look at the game and you're like, stang, boy,
- 59:05Speaker 10: you didn't play very good. You know, we didn't play
- 59:07Speaker 10: very good when won by thirty one. I mean, it's
- 59:10Speaker 10: just crazy. You held a team to twenty six total points.
- 59:14Speaker 10: That's absurd in the Southeastern Conference to do that is
- 59:18Speaker 10: like crazy.
- 59:20Speaker 6: But that's how locked in and how hard.
- 59:23Speaker 10: Our kids played last night, and I'm just extremely proud
- 59:27Speaker 10: of for that.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Acordable head coach Vick Shaffer talking about media availability and
- 59:32Speaker 1: kind of recapping a little bit of what it looked
- 59:34Speaker 1: like earlier this week against Georgia thirty one point win.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Holding a team to twenty six points. Now, if you
- 59:41Speaker 1: go through the raw or you go through the box scores,
- 59:45Speaker 1: and you look at low scoring games for the University
- 59:49Speaker 1: of Texas this season. Now fifty seven is scraping the
- 59:52Speaker 1: bottom of the barrel. You don't want to score fifty seven points.
- 59:55Speaker 1: But you go through that loss again South Carolina January
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: in a Columbia, South Carolina. He's sixties, having fifty loss. Okay,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: against the number two ranked team in the country at
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: that point, the game cocks. Your ability to win low
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: scoring games, especially in the SEC, helps you later down
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: the road. This is something that has been proven over
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: and over and over again that you want if you
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: are going to have low scoring games doing the regular
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: season a get those experiences under your belt. He spoke
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: about low scoring games and how it helps. This is
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: shape for six.
- 1:00:35Speaker 10: Well, I certainly think it's probably something that they can
- 1:00:38Speaker 10: fall back on.
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: It's not very good from my heart.
- 1:00:42Speaker 10: But at the same time, I think, again, any experiences
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: where you can really go through some adversity and you
- 1:00:48Speaker 10: can come out on the other side in a positive way.
- 1:00:50Speaker 10: I mean, that's what life's all about, y'all. It's about
- 1:00:53Speaker 10: adversity and how you handle it. And I think these
- 1:00:55Speaker 10: kids have had adversity throughout the course of the season,
- 1:00:58Speaker 10: We've been on the road a lot, been pretty some
- 1:01:00Speaker 10: days in some games, but yet they continually find a
- 1:01:04Speaker 10: way to win. And so, you know, I think it's
- 1:01:07Speaker 10: it's certainly beneficial and certainly something that they can draw from.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Andrews.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I will fill you in for Creig Way on sports
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. No, it's a family
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: affair tonight for the University of Texas As. It's almost
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: like a homecoming for Vic Shaffer coached eight years at
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the Mississippi State and I essentially built that program up
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: and got them to that national recognition that they've been
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: looking for ever since. To be completely honest, what do
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: you expect the reception to be like tonight, Vic Shaeffer, Well.
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: I don't know how.
- 1:01:48Speaker 10: I don't know if you'd call it excited. I don't
- 1:01:50Speaker 10: get too fired up by going on the road in
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: the SEC.
- 1:01:53Speaker 6: But you know, obviously we have so many.
- 1:01:57Speaker 10: Special friends there still to this day, you know, such
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: fond memories. You know, I've said this a lot, those
- 1:02:04Speaker 10: eight years that we spent there, the eight best years
- 1:02:07Speaker 10: of the Shaeffer family's lives. Both of my kids are
- 1:02:10Speaker 10: graduates Mississippi State. They're bulldogs. You know, we just had
- 1:02:16Speaker 10: so much great fun, great success there, and again still
- 1:02:21Speaker 10: have so many good friends there. And it's not just
- 1:02:24Speaker 10: the people at Mississippi State, it's that state in general, y'all.
- 1:02:28Speaker 10: Like that is the most genuine, caring, loving state. The
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: people from North Mississippi, Olive Branch, all the way down
- 1:02:38Speaker 10: to the Delta and all the way down to Biloxi
- 1:02:41Speaker 10: and Gulf Port, I mean, anywhere you go. They just
- 1:02:46Speaker 10: really embraced me, my family, my team, and so there's
- 1:02:52Speaker 10: so many fond memories of our time there, and obviously
- 1:02:56Speaker 10: it's a place that we still hold dear to our heart.
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: I still have my farm there where we built our
- 1:03:01Speaker 10: dream home. I've additionally bought another farm thirty minutes from there.
- 1:03:06Speaker 10: That's beautiful country, and so it's a place that still
- 1:03:11Speaker 10: we still endear to ourselves and it is so special
- 1:03:15Speaker 10: to us and it will always be that for us
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: because again, we still have so many wonderful friends there.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: So Shaffer went on to explain understanding why they left
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: for those Bulldog fans, that's Shaeffer three.
- 1:03:31Speaker 10: Yeah, I definitely think it would have been difficult a
- 1:03:35Speaker 10: year after. I think what happens over time is people
- 1:03:38Speaker 10: come to understand. You know, I think there was a
- 1:03:41Speaker 10: lot of people didn't understand when it happened. But I
- 1:03:45Speaker 10: think since we've left, I think they've come to have
- 1:03:47Speaker 10: a real clear picture of potentially why it happened and
- 1:03:53Speaker 10: the timing of it and those kinds of things. So
- 1:03:56Speaker 10: I certainly think that five years later was is way
- 1:04:00Speaker 10: better than going back that first year, because I do
- 1:04:03Speaker 10: think there were still some things that weren't very clear
- 1:04:06Speaker 10: as to what exactly transpired.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Texas is at the top of the SEC women's basketball
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: standing the thirteen to one in the conference, twenty seven
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: to two overall, Mississippi State, six and eight in conference play,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: but nineteen and nine. It's not going to be an
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: easy task tonight, but don't expect pick Schaeffer to shed
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: any tears, as this is a business trip for the
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Longhorns trying to continue to roll their way through eleven
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: game win streak on the line tonight. You can catch
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: that game on one oh three to one or on
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: the free iHeartRadio app as well. Cameron Parker will be
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: on the call for that one.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: When we come back, the Las Vegas Raiders, the victims
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: of the tuck rule, well, they got the quarterback from it.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Tom Brady, now a minority owner, did he take his
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: patriot cheating ways out west? We will decide next on
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: The Craig Way Show. Andrew zim will filling in for
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Craig on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred at the Zone.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Andrew Zimmel filling in for Craig this week as Craig
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: bounces all over, goes from Fabuel, Arkansas, back to the
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: capital city of Austin, does the Coaches Show tonight, then
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: goes to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Classic. We'll
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: have the call for you right here on the Zone
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: at tomorrow. Washington, Texas Tech Saturday, Illinois on Sunday. So
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: the big one happening right now as the NFL combine starts.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: But the conversation is around a Super Bowl winning quarterback.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: That would be Matthew Stafford, Texas's favorite son. He is
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: up in the air with where he's going to go.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: He could stay in La and be a Ram for
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: the end of his career, or he could go somewhere else.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: And now the Rams do have a little bit of
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: leverage here if they wanted to trade him, could sign
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: and trade him. If they want him to go off
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: and do his own thing, they could just have him
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: do that. They have a little bit of leverage. Sean
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: McVay was on the Fitzgerald and I think it's Andrew,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the former offensive lineman for the Rams. It was on
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: a podcast. He was talking about Matthew Stafford and it
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: sounds like the head coach of the Rams wants his
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: QB to come back.
- 1:06:25Speaker 14: I think the important thing was let's be clear, open
- 1:06:28Speaker 14: and honest.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: And this isn't that.
- 1:06:29Speaker 14: We're trying to be able to figure out, you know,
- 1:06:31Speaker 14: what is the next right move, but let's at least
- 1:06:33Speaker 14: have all the parameters relative to you and Jimmy Sexton
- 1:06:36Speaker 14: being able to talk to teams that have called on you.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Don't have to do anything in secret. Want to make
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: sure that we're all abreast of the.
- 1:06:43Speaker 14: Situation, even though the first goal in mine is to
- 1:06:45Speaker 14: have you come back here as the quarterback.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so the number one goal for the Rams is
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: we want Matthew Stafford back. This is the guy who's
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: played five years there. He helped them win a Super Bowl,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and they feel like they're a team constructed to win
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: another one. Even with letting you know, Cooper Cupp look
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: for a trade partner, and even with Aaron Donald retiring
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: before last season, they feel like they have the infrastructure
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: to compete. But don't get too comfortable because even though
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: you want to keep him, there sounds like there may
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: be a little bit of collusion here.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: And they'll get to that here in a second.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: I want to hear from Pete Carroll because Pete Carroll,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: the former head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, the former
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: advisor to the Seahawks franchise, decided to be the next
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Now, what does
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Pete Carroll have? What relationship does he have to the
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Raiders organization? I mean, he coached at USC, He was
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: a professor at USC before he took this job. Why
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: would he go Well, he made it abundantly clear yesterday
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: on why he decided to become the next Raiders head coach.
- 1:08:02Speaker 15: It starts there when Tom wanted to do this and
- 1:08:04Speaker 15: he wanted to be part of this thing.
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: That changed my outlook on what could be possible.
- 1:08:11Speaker 15: I've found out since how consistently he is a great
- 1:08:15Speaker 15: competitive mentality and spirit, and he passed it right through
- 1:08:19Speaker 15: to the rest of the ownership group that has been
- 1:08:21Speaker 15: incredibly fired up and Jack to do something special. Marcus
- 1:08:25Speaker 15: really found a tremendous group to represent. And then I
- 1:08:29Speaker 15: didn't know this either, but when I met John Spytech
- 1:08:32Speaker 15: and get a chance to understand where he's coming from too.
- 1:08:34Speaker 15: He represents the competitive mentality that I know Tom lives
- 1:08:38Speaker 15: for and I live for, and so it's just such
- 1:08:41Speaker 15: a good it's such a good.
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: Arrangement for us. It's really an exciting opportunity.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: So he is a competitor, Yeah, the greatest quarterback of
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: all time for sure. But we're getting into this very
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: weird area. You saw it happen during the Super Bowl
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: where Tom Brady. Okay, he's going to a chance to
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: look behind the scenes at the Chiefs and the Eagles,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: two competitors of the Las Vegas Raiders. But he's a commentator,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: so he should be able to get a behind the
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: scenes look. NFL doesn't have a problem with it. Their
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: broadcast partner, Fox doesn't have a problem with it. If
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I was an owner, I'd have a problem with it.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: If I was an owner of any of these franchises.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: I have a little bit of an issue because it
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: sounds like when Coach Carroll says he is a competitor,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: always bring this competitive spirit to the owner. Because remember
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Tom Brady is in the general manager, he is the
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, and it sounds
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: like he has a pretty good chunk when it comes
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to importance and sway over this franchise. So he brings
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: this competitive edge, which is a secret sauce word. It's
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: a keyword.
- 1:09:50Speaker 12: Four.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: He knows the loopholes. Remember what Tom was doing in
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: New England. He was with maybe the greatest cheater of
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: all time and Bill be it's not cheating if I
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: do this, it's not cheating if they were able to
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: bend the rules to almost breaking them. And he brings
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: that now to the Las Vegas Raiders. Is it cheating
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: to go seduce a coach?
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: No?
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: No, Pete Carroll was a free agent. He could have
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: gone anywhere, could have gone to be the next head
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: coach of any organization. But it seems like Carol knows
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: something that the rest of us don't. It seems like
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Pete Carroll has a little behind the scenes background info
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: on what makes Tom Brady such a good competitor, and
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: it's stuff like this. Ian Rappaport today was reporting about
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: a just a chance encounter of Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford.
- 1:10:40Speaker 16: Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford did bumped into each other
- 1:10:43Speaker 16: at Yellowstone in Montana, apparently skied together.
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: That seemed to be the end of it.
- 1:10:48Speaker 16: But we have known that the Las Vegas Raiders and
- 1:10:51Speaker 16: the New York Giants have had interest in matters sometime
- 1:10:54Speaker 16: and considering the fact that his age and Jimmy Sexon
- 1:10:57Speaker 16: does in fact have permission.
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: To engage with these teams and.
- 1:11:01Speaker 16: Just see what his value might be if there.
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: Was in fact that trade.
- 1:11:04Speaker 16: Not allowed to negotiate trade compensation, but is allowed to
- 1:11:07Speaker 16: discuss salary. So yeah, these are two teams that do
- 1:11:10Speaker 16: need it and that are interested. And actually the Las
- 1:11:13Speaker 16: Vegas Raiders do make a ton of sense for Matthew
- 1:11:16Speaker 16: Stafford if, for instance, he wanted to still live in Malibu.
- 1:11:19Speaker 16: It's a forty minute flight from California to Las Vegas.
- 1:11:22Speaker 16: It's a team where you could drop a quarterback in
- 1:11:25Speaker 16: conceivably beginning the process of winning, which obviously is something
- 1:11:28Speaker 16: that want. We know that Brady has been aggressive and
- 1:11:31Speaker 16: the Raiders have been aggressive and trying to land a
- 1:11:32Speaker 16: starting quarterback.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: This makes sense.
- 1:11:35Speaker 16: However, the Rams due all the cards, they can trade
- 1:11:39Speaker 16: him or not. They can decide whether they want to
- 1:11:41Speaker 16: pay Stafford or not. So this is not done yet
- 1:11:44Speaker 16: with Matthew Stafford in the.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: Ram, Matthew Stafford and the Rams, Matthew Stafford and the Raiders.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: There's a lot of different options here for mister Stafford. Now,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the part that caught my attention, we're talking about making
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: a four Lady mane a flight from Malibu to Vegas.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I look, I understand that it's close. I don't think
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: it's that close.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: I don't know if I if I'm the starting quarterback
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: of a team I'm wanting to jettison across it doesn't
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: matter what area, if it's even more than a two
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: hour drive, I don't know if I'm absolutely in love
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: with making that happen. The other thing is too and
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: I think that many people are already forgetting about this,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: is that the last time one of these Hall of
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Fame caliber quarterbacks left their situation, that was pretty good
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: for another situation to try to chase after maybe one
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: more ring or a little bit more success, didn't work
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: so well. Talking about Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets. Now,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Stafford and Rodgers are two different characters. They have different personalities,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: and I understand that. But if I'm an organization like
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: the Raiders, why would I not want to just go
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: in the draft and look for a young quarterback that
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: I can potentially mold and then make a run and
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: one of these other quarterbacks who are on the free
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: agent market now, Sam Darnold seems like the highest option,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: feels like the best option when it comes to these
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: free Asian quarterbacks. I'm not absolutely in love with Zach
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: Wilson by any means. Jacoby Bursett, It's gonna be on
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: the market, guys that I'm kind of overlooking, to be
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: completely honest with you. But if I know I can
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: go get a young quarterback in the draft and it's
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: a stopgap guy, a person that I know is starting
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: for two seasons and then in year three, I have
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: my rookie come in or even shorter. Think about what
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: the Falcons did with Kirk Cousins. They signed Kirk Cousins
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: to a multi one hundred million dollar deal and then
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: drafted Panix at number nine, so Kirk Cousins could potentially
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: be an option here for the Raiders as well. I
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: just don't know if I'm in love with the idea
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: of Stafford going to Las Vegas. It seems like he's
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: in love with the idea, and it seems like his
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: wife's in love with the idea. I like brock Bowers.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: I think that he Carroll's a very good coach. He's
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: going to help make that defense a lot better. The
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: running game. We'll see where that goes. But a lot
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: of these moves have to be made soon. There is
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: a timetable for all of these things to happen. But
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: the main takeaway I have from all of this is
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that Tom Brady is taking his cheating ways from New
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: England to Vegas and the Kansasity Chiefs, who've had a
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: target on their back now for almost a decade. There's
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: a new competitor that has entered the chat, and it
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: is Tom Brady. If there was ever a guy who
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: could potentially inflict pain and change the way that legacies
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: are formed, it would be Tom Brady. Even from the
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: owner's box, think about this. Tom Brady is now trying
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: to set up a quarterback who could challenge Mahomes in
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: the AFC West. He's got his coach and Pete Carroll,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: a Hall of Fame caliber coach, and he's got a
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: pretty good draft pick too this upcoming draft. There's a
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: world where the entirety of Mahomes' legacy, we're talking about
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: him potentially being the goat. There's a world where he
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: never gets back to being an AFC West champion. If
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: the way that Tom Brady sets his team up works.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: Think about that. Michael Jordan is on a golf course
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: somewhere absolutely laughing and wishing that he had this idea
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: back in the day. If he was a way to
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: take over a team. Oh oh wait, he did own
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: a team and didn't work out so well. So maybe
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Tom Brady's the goat of all goats. He's able to
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: do it on the field and off the field as well.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: When we come back Travis Hunter, he spoke at the
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: NFL Combined he wants to be like his former head
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: coach Dean Sanders, wants to play both ways. Does it
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: make sense for him to do that though, we'll discuss next.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: Andrews I will filling in for Craig Way on Sports
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Radio Am thirteen hundred The Zone Sports Radio AM.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Thirteen hundred The Zone.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Andrews II will filling in for Craig Way on this Thursday.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I want to remind you, in case you missed it
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: earlier in the show, we gave you breaking news from
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: San Antonio. Statement from San Antonio head coach Greg Popovich
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: via the San Antonio Spurs quote, I've decided not to
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: return to the sidelines this season. Mitch Johnson and his
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: staff have done a wonderful job, and resolve and professionalism
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: the players have shown sticking together during a challenging season
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: health with the hope that I can return to coaching
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: in the future. Lot to get into there, obviously, we've
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: been saying from essentially November when pop was sidelined due
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: to that mild health or mild stroke with major health
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: concerns with that that if this is the end, this
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: is the end, and he is one of the if
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: not the greatest head coach of all time. But this
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: statement makes me think that for everybody who was writing
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: them off, everybody who was saying, Okay, it's done, maybe
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: you did a little bit too much. Maybe it was
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: a little premature in the writing off of Greg Popovich
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: from the sideline. Sounds like he's not gonna come back
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: this season. I understand no Victor wembin Yama. There's a
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: little front court depth. We talked to Bill Showing yesterday
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: about the injuries that the Spurs have suffered this season.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: There's really no reason to try to rush a comeback here.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: If your Pop there's relaxed, take some time off, do
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: a little advanced scouting, maybe watch some Longhorn basketball games,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: and start figuring out, Okay, what number is Trey Johnson
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: gonna wear?
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: I love Trey.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: I think that this is a guy who's gonna go
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: top five in the NBA draft. And the Spurs, they
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: continue to struggle the way they have in the past
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: couple of weeks, they could be a team that's drafting
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: the top five. They have their own pick. They have
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the Atlanta Hawks lottery pick this year as well. The
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: Hawks kind of in the playoffs playing area. You'd want
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the Hawks to lose some more games and you potentially
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: have two top picks trade up. Maybe you know, We'll
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: see what happens. But good news out of San Antonio
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: is pop is getting better. The health is a concern obviously,
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: but a ring endorsement of Mitch Johnson as well, a
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: guy who's guided a lot of a grief from Spurs
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: fans and you know, interim coach, man acting head coach
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: doing his best. We will continue to see how the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: Spurs progressed this year with him.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: All right, let's.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Talk Travis Hunter as the Heisman Trophy winner goes to
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: the NFL Draft, unlike all of these other quarterbacks and
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: different players. Oh, this guy is not going to do this.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: And the duel Carter now saying that he has a
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: broken foot. It turns into could Travis Hunter potentially be
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: the number one overall pick? He was projected as that
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: before the college football season. After he wins the Heisman
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: he was projected as at but now melkiper junior as
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: Abdul Carter going number one In his latest mock. Travis
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Hunter spoke to ESPN earlier today at the Combine and
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: it was a rapid fire between him and Laura Roughlege,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: I think was the interviewer.
- 1:19:02Speaker 17: And this is what it sounded like, Tames that are
- 1:19:05Speaker 17: interested in you here, what's the feedback that you've got done?
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: I did?
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: I did very very good in my meeting, So I'm
- 1:19:11Speaker 8: excited to know that.
- 1:19:13Speaker 17: What do you find these teams about the possibility of
- 1:19:16Speaker 17: playing on both sides of the ball?
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: A couple of teams they took me in as receiver
- 1:19:19Speaker 8: and a couple of teams took me in as DV.
- 1:19:21Speaker 8: So I think it's still up in the air.
- 1:19:23Speaker 17: What was the feedback you got from teams looking at
- 1:19:25Speaker 17: you as a receiver?
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: It's a lot of things I need to work on
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: on both both sides of the ball.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: So what do you think you need to work on most?
- 1:19:34Speaker 8: It's always you always work on technique, so I definitely
- 1:19:36Speaker 8: need to work on technique. And it's a couple more
- 1:19:38Speaker 8: small things.
- 1:19:39Speaker 17: And then what do you think about the potential of
- 1:19:41Speaker 17: being an NFL player who plays both wide receiver in dB?
- 1:19:45Speaker 17: How important is that for you?
- 1:19:47Speaker 8: That's super important to me. You know, I've been doing
- 1:19:48Speaker 8: it my whole life, so I would like for them
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: to let me give me the opportunity to do it again.
- 1:19:52Speaker 17: There's a lot of conversation about you potentially the number
- 1:19:55Speaker 17: one overall pick. How do you manage all of that
- 1:19:57Speaker 17: as you go through this process.
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: I kind of don't look at us if I just
- 1:20:00Speaker 8: look at fishing all day, so.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: What do you see on fishing?
- 1:20:04Speaker 8: I just see people catching fish. I can't wait to
- 1:20:06Speaker 8: get back home and catch me some fish.
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: There.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: He gotta love that. You gotta love a guy who
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: he's not concerned about any of this other stuff. He's
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: not concerned about going number one. He's not concerned about
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: where he's going to play or what position he'll play.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: He's concerned about fishing man. So then you think about, okay,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: well where's the best fishing spot of the teams who
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: have high draft picks. Because the Jacksonville Jaguars trade up
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: for a fishing superstar, Travis Hunter, it makes sense that
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: he wants to play both ways. I understand it, and
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: I can get behind that. I understand that he wants
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: to do that, and it would make sense for a
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: team like I don't know, the New York Giants, for example,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: to do something like that. The Giants next year are
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: going to be awful again. They still don't have the
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: quarterback position figured out. They're continuing to just throw money
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: at certain issues on the defensive line and defense side
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: of the ball. So if you have a guy like
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: Hunter playing the number one media market in the world.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: You have a potential to sell a bunch of jerseys,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: and you can make this kind of like a sideshow,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: to be completely frank, because that's what it would be.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: If you have him playing both ways. All you're doing
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: is you're looking for the media attention at that point.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: You're not trying to win football games. You're not trying
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: to be competitive in the NFL. Because I know people
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: have continued to bring up Deon Sanders, well, Dion did
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: it well. Devin Hester was a kick return spet. It's
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: a different league today. The players are faster and bigger
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: and stronger. And if Travis Hunter does want to try
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: to play both ways consistently, and we're not talking about, oh,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: we have the offensive package for him, well in defensive sets,
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: the nickel will play him in a nickelback position, and
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: he truly wants to try to play both ways, he
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: won't be able to, not because of stamina, but because
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: of body type. You don't have the ability, the physical
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: way to run that many miles in an NFL game
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: and still be able to hit guys and tackle guys.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I watched Travis Hunter in the Almable. I watched him
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: play BYU I watched him a lot this season. His
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: heis and winning season at Colorado. There are some times
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: where yeah, he's right, there are some technique things that
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: do need to get cleaned up. Is he the best
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: defensive back in this year's draft, maybe you can make
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: the case for him. Is he the best wide receiver? No,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: he's not the best wide receiver. So if you're drafting
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: him as high as you are, you're drafting him for
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: the defensive back purpose and for the teams that need
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: a defensive back at dB. Yeah, he would fit that
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: need for sure. But in five ten years, are we
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: gonna be talking about him like we talk about I
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: don't know, Jalen Ramsey. Are gonna be talking to about
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: him like we talk about Sauce Gardner even out of Cincinnati.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: I'm not entirely sold. I think that there's a lot
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: to like about Hunter, for sure. His willingness to play
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: both sides of the ball first and foremost, a guy
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: who's willing to put his body on the line for
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: his team, and a guy whose teammates absolutely adore him.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: All of that can be true. But if I'm trying
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: to win football games at the highest level, playing it
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: both ways is not the way to do that. That's
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: not a recipe for success at this level of the game.
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: I would love to see it happen, but I'd also
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: love to have a time machine because that's what it
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: would take for him to be successful. It would have
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: to take him back into the nineties when yeah, the
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: guys are still athletic, for sure, but it wasn't what
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: we have now. In a world where you're having to
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: play defensive back on say a guy like DK Metcalf,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: and then turn around and play against that secondary that
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks have, You're not going to win those
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: battles consistently enough to make you an impact player. It's
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: just point blank period. We will wrap up the Craig
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Way Show. UT women's basketball plays tonight. Andrew zim will
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: filling in for Craig Way on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: hundred The Zone
