- 0:00Dad, what's that George Strait song?
- 0:02Is it? Does Fort Worth ever cross your
- 0:03mind? Remember that one?
- 0:04I do, yeah. I was thinking about that.
- 0:08I don't know. I was just thinking about that
- 0:09watching the race this weekend down in Texas and I guess it's
- 0:13is Texas more Fort Fort Worth than it is Dallas, TX.
- 0:17Most people right in the middle, right?
- 0:19Well text the race tracks like due north of of Fort Worth.
- 0:23So you leave a racetrack and go South to Fort Worth when you
- 0:26hang a lift, go go EA little bit to Dallas, right.
- 0:30Speaking of George Strait, he was at where was he at Clemson
- 0:33this week. Your sister went down to that
- 0:35said that 90,000 frigging people watching George Strait.
- 0:39That's ridiculous. 90,000 people.
- 0:41And the prices weren't cheap either.
- 0:43I don't know how they how they get so much freeze tickets.
- 0:45But anyhow, that's that's country music.
- 0:48That's a country music deal. Yeah, well, it's ridiculous in a
- 0:51good way. He's the king.
- 0:52It's great. He is, he is.
- 0:54And he played a Whalen song. He always plays Whalen man.
- 0:57He always has to do Whalen. He he always has to do.
- 1:01It's he's got the guy has like, I don't know, 150 number one
- 1:05hits and that's just number one hits.
- 1:07And then he's probably got another 150 hits that weren't
- 1:10number one but were hits. And but when he goes out there
- 1:13and plays live, he's got to do at least four or five cover
- 1:16songs. He plays a Whalen song.
- 1:18He plays usually plays a Johnny Cash.
- 1:20He's been playing a Tom Petty song a lot the last couple
- 1:22years. Think he's I think George has
- 1:24kind of got it figured out to where he just wants to work a
- 1:27few days a year, still get to play some music live.
- 1:30And he does it in places where he can play in front of as many
- 1:33people as possible. And he just plays what he wants
- 1:36to play. That's that's yeah, that's he's
- 1:38got to figure it out. More power to him, man.
- 1:40Let's take you just living the retired life that, you know,
- 1:43just doing what he wants to do. Yeah, Exactly.
- 1:46Anyways, I was thinking about that song this weekend.
- 1:48So I was thinking about the first time we went in Texas.
- 1:50And I remember standing out there, and I feel like if there
- 1:52was one place, because everything's pretty flat, I felt
- 1:54like if you looked far enough in One Direction outside the
- 1:57racetrack, you could see Fort Worth.
- 1:58And if you looked far enough in the other direction, you could
- 2:00see Dallas. And I don't know, I could just
- 2:02be completely making that up, probably.
- 2:04And. But in my mind, that's what it's
- 2:06like. Well, hey, it was exciting.
- 2:09I thought it was a good weekend of racing.
- 2:14Well, bias Chase is one of my my guys I root for.
- 2:17Of course, as I've said before, I got a lot of drivers.
- 2:18I got a lot more drivers that I root for than ones that I don't
- 2:22particularly root for at this point, which is which is good as
- 2:24a fan, but I was happy to see chase pull out the win lot of
- 2:31besides Chase, of course, Chase and Danny running one and two
- 2:33let's you know, you love seeing guys like that battle it out for
- 2:36the win. There was a lot of battling
- 2:39going on throughout the rest of the field too, which we we can
- 2:41get into that as well. But just for your initial
- 2:44thoughts on the weekend and the race at Texas.
- 2:47Yeah, it was good. They had NASCAR hit a home run
- 2:49again. You know, they had just a good
- 2:51weekend, good exciting racing all weekend.
- 2:54I mean, it was all good. And you know, with the 9 car,
- 2:58man, I think we need to talk about the nine car a little bit.
- 3:00I don't know. You know, it's been pretty
- 3:02evident that the Toyotas have kind of bring the class of the
- 3:05field this year, right? But the two races and and the
- 3:09Chevrolet's talk about the new car and they don't quite have
- 3:12the balance figured out the arrow deal.
- 3:14But man, the two races that that nine car Chase held is 1.
- 3:19Both of those races, Denny Hamlin's been kind of dominant.
- 3:23We're going back to Martinsville, then we go back to
- 3:25Texas this or Sunday. And you know, even Hamlin then
- 3:29he said after the race at Texas that his car was perfect.
- 3:34I mean, he, he, he couldn't have asked his car to do anything
- 3:37more than it was doing, right? And you don't hear, you don't
- 3:40hear race car drivers saying it too often.
- 3:41But normally they're like, well, just a little scoot tight here,
- 3:44a little loose or something. But he said it was perfect.
- 3:47And, and he couldn't do anything with the 9 car.
- 3:49In fact, the 9 car actually drove off just a little bit,
- 3:53right. And the same kind of thing
- 3:55happened to Martinsville. You know, Elliot got the lead,
- 3:57you the like what, 50 or 60 laps to go and just kind of held pace
- 4:01ahead of Denny. So, you know, it's interesting
- 4:05to me because you, you watch the 9 car and you know, they're,
- 4:09they're managing the, it seems like they do a real good job
- 4:12managing the race, whether it's chase driving with his tires and
- 4:16the feedback or gusts and making the calls to make a little
- 4:20adjustment that seems to make it work.
- 4:22I mean, they they've they've really impressed me with kind of
- 4:27the way they do their thing right now, you know, and you
- 4:30know, if remember I'm watching that nine car at Martinsville
- 4:33and at Texas leading and taking the checkered flag.
- 4:35It kind of brought back, you call it old memories.
- 4:37Heck, it wasn't that long ago right before they came out.
- 4:39The new car, the new car kind of kind of messed those guys up for
- 4:44a while. But it's just it's interesting
- 4:45to me to watch how they manage the race, you know, and keep
- 4:50making that thing better. And I'm going to tell you, man,
- 4:53when that car is good at the end of these races, there's nobody
- 4:55better than Chase Elliott. And you know, it's just the way
- 4:57it is. And I'm not sure that that's
- 4:59getting talked about enough about right now.
- 5:01The only thing we hear about is the Chevy's got a little
- 5:03disadvantage. Well, they've hit it a couple
- 5:04times, right, Even better than any of the other Hendrick cars.
- 5:07So Pearson to see going forward. But anyhow, fans, just watch
- 5:12that. I'm telling you.
- 5:13I'm telling you fans just pick you out a car.
- 5:16It doesn't matter who it is, but the nine car is a good one to
- 5:18pick out. Just watch where he qualifies.
- 5:20Watch the race start. You'll see him back there in the
- 5:23top 10 somewhere. You watch him on restarts, he'll
- 5:25lose two or three spots any games and back, you know, and if
- 5:29you just watch those guys, they they make a slow progression all
- 5:32through the race. I mean, they're they're doing a
- 5:34real good job of that, better than probably better than all
- 5:37the other teams right now from where they start to where they
- 5:39end up, right. And so I don't know, just a neat
- 5:43thing to follow, but that it was a good it was a good victory.
- 5:46It was a good win for those guys.
- 5:47And like I say, Hamlin said, man, my car was good.
- 5:50It was the best. I don't know what else I could
- 5:52have asked for from it, right? But the racing was just good all
- 5:55weekend. I mean, it was good racing, just
- 5:56good. And the stands, man, all the
- 5:59fans in the stands, right? I don't know, man, it's all
- 6:03going good. It's all, you know, It seems to
- 6:05be the electric atmosphere we talk about, you know, then just
- 6:09everything's going good right now, seems like.
- 6:12Yeah, yeah, I agree with you. I thought the crowd was good.
- 6:14Of course there's you get on social media and then there's
- 6:18there's folks that are they're never, you know, if you're
- 6:21always going to be comparing crowds now to what it was 2530
- 6:25years ago, maybe not even that long ago, honestly 20 years ago.
- 6:29And that's that's just tough to to do that just because I just,
- 6:32I don't know that I don't know, maybe I'm wrong about this.
- 6:35I don't know that trying to constantly reach the crowd
- 6:37levels of 20 to 25 years ago is. Realistic, you know, we'll never
- 6:43do that, Ricky. That'll never happen again.
- 6:45It was a, it was a combination of a perfect storm of a lot of
- 6:48things that went on, you know, for 10 or 200 or 12 years that
- 6:52made that, that made that thing explode the way it did.
- 6:56And, and, and I, I just don't see those kinds of things coming
- 6:59together again to make that happen.
- 7:01And it's all, it's not just racing, it's all sports worlds,
- 7:04you know what I mean? We're all hell.
- 7:05Everybody's got 8 foot TV's now. It's a lot easier to step back
- 7:08in the couch watching an 8 foot TV that it is fight traffic to
- 7:11watch a ball game or race or whatever, but nothing like the
- 7:14excitement of being at a race and.
- 7:17Yeah, you know, that is that is the one thing, ball game, race,
- 7:21whatever, it's still it is. The home experience is a lot
- 7:24better than what it was back in the day, but the in person
- 7:27experience, nothing still beats that.
- 7:30So it's good to say. I thought it was a good crowd.
- 7:32I thought I've, I've been on the fence a couple of times in
- 7:36recent years since they, they reconfigured Texas.
- 7:38You know, they made your term 1 and 2.
- 7:40Looks like it's about 18 lanes wide to me now.
- 7:44But something about this Sunday, I was like, man, it just it the
- 7:47race and I just, I felt felt like you, well, like you said,
- 7:50it was just really good racing. I, I enjoyed it, enjoyed it a
- 7:54lot. I've started looking a little
- 7:58bit at point standings, you know, and now we talked about
- 8:02this early on in the season with mass cast and I talked about
- 8:07how, you know, when do you really start looking at point
- 8:09stands and it's point standings. And this is the week I finally
- 8:12found myself really starting to look at it a little bit.
- 8:16And I I it to me, you got Reddick up up top, obviously
- 8:21Denny in second, Chase in 3rd, Ryan Blaney in fourth.
- 8:25Now this is where it gets interesting to me. 5th, 6th and
- 8:297th You want to take a guess any order?
- 8:315th, 6th and 7th in the points. Again, the top 4 right now,
- 8:34Reddick, Hamlin, Chase, Ryan, Blaney, 5-6 and seven take you a
- 8:38guess at what what, what are in those three.
- 8:40I really I don't. I don't have a clue who are they
- 8:44all? Right.
- 8:46Well, 7th is Ty Gibbs, 6th is Carson Hosavar and 5th is Chris
- 8:54Buscher. And I thought that was, I
- 8:57thought that was a pretty, pretty good and actually
- 9:00Keselowski is in 9th. So a couple RFK cars in the top
- 9:05ten there, which is which is pretty cool, but I don't know.
- 9:08I just thought I was looking through this list and I thought
- 9:10there's Toyota, there's there's Ford, there's Chevy, there's
- 9:14different, there's a few different teams.
- 9:15You got 2311, Gibbs, Hendrick, Penske, RFK, Spire, all in the
- 9:22top ten. I don't know.
- 9:23I just felt I was looking at those like that's a pretty good,
- 9:25good balance list there. You know, it's, it's, it's good
- 9:27to see, I feel like. Yeah.
- 9:29And I'll tell you this, you said that about looking at the points
- 9:33when back in the day we were racing, when you left Daytona,
- 9:36wherever you finished, that's where you were in the points,
- 9:38right? And it mattered.
- 9:41You, you, you left Daytona, you know, you were at where you were
- 9:45at in the points. And it mattered about your point
- 9:48situation the very first race of the year because that was
- 9:51something you had to do every single week to get to the end of
- 9:54the season, to try to, you know, be up where you wanted to be.
- 9:57And then with the with the stuff they did over the last few
- 9:59years, all that went away. But now that that feeling's back
- 10:02a little bit, these guys are paying attention to that, Yeah.
- 10:05Yeah, now it's good to say, well, let's get to the the drama
- 10:08we got. We had some drama as we usually
- 10:10do in the NASCAR Cup Series. We had Kyle Busch and John
- 10:16Henneman Nemechek getting into it.
- 10:17And then we also had Ryan Priest and Ty Gibbs getting into it.
- 10:21And then just before, just before you and I sat down to
- 10:25record this evening, I'll go ahead and read through it for
- 10:28the folks that maybe hadn't heard about it yet.
- 10:30But we had some penalties laid down or a penalty laid down, I
- 10:34should say, for Ryan Priest. Let's see, he got he got docked
- 10:3925 points and fined 50 grand for wrecking Ty Gibbs.
- 10:44To my knowledge, I don't believe Kyle Busch got anything for his
- 10:47deal. So here's an let's see, here's
- 10:49an explanation. Where did I see an explanation
- 10:53here on X? Basically, I'll summarize a
- 10:55little bit. Basically, I think what what
- 10:57probably got priests most in trouble was he said on the radio
- 11:00what he was going to do. He was he was mad and more or
- 11:03less said, I'm, I'm this is what I'm going to do.
- 11:05I'm going to take care of him. And he did.
- 11:07And when you got that evidence, it's like when, when, when Denny
- 11:13got penalized for, for kind of talking about the incident,
- 11:15whatever that whenever that was on his podcast after.
- 11:18It's like, well, if you said you did it, it's kind of or you're
- 11:20going to say you're going to do it and you do, it's kind of hard
- 11:22to argue against that. And then they've got SMT data
- 11:25and all this and it says, well, you could argue Kyle didn't mean
- 11:29to do it. And rind it, whatever, but I
- 11:32think that's the biggest thing. If they got audio or video of
- 11:35you say it, I'm going to do this or video or audio of you saying,
- 11:38yeah, I did that. And it's kind of hard to kind of
- 11:40hard to fight against that. But what are your thoughts on
- 11:43those two incidents? Yeah, but like I said, I just
- 11:46read that right before we started doing this podcast,
- 11:49right? So my initial knee jerk reaction
- 11:51is, damn, I didn't have that. I didn't see that coming with
- 11:55priests. I, I, I and I'll be honest with
- 11:58you, Ricky, I don't, you know, hearing NASCAR's explanation, I
- 12:01get it, But I man, I don't agree.
- 12:03I don't agree with it. I don't go along with it.
- 12:05I just, you know, my initial knee jerk reaction is I do not
- 12:10probably agree with penalizing him.
- 12:14I, you know, you say things that he at the moment you do that,
- 12:19but then when you carry it out, yeah, I mean, I NASCAR's got the
- 12:22perfect answer to that, righty. He said what he said he's going
- 12:25to do and he said he's going to do it, then he did it.
- 12:27So we have to react to that, right.
- 12:29So the point of all this is keep your fragging mouth shut,
- 12:32drivers, you know what I mean? Just keep your fragging mouth
- 12:35shut and then deny, then deny it afterwards, right?
- 12:40You know, it, it's, it's just, it's, it's, it's a stark
- 12:43comparison between really, I mean, you, you, you penalize
- 12:47him, Priest, but they didn't penalize Kyle Bush.
- 12:50And you know, in in reading that what you were reading, I read
- 12:53that a little bit and he said, well, the data shows his will
- 12:56was turned all the way to the left, right.
- 12:59Kyle Busch's when he got into him.
- 13:00Well, I can tell you how you make that happen, right?
- 13:03But but but man, everybody thought he was going to he was
- 13:08going to be Kyle Busch find and penalized and all that.
- 13:12And they didn't touch him, right, But they did Priest.
- 13:15So I don't know. I, if it was me, I wouldn't
- 13:18penalize either one of them. That would that would have been
- 13:21my take if I sat on the hierarchy board of NASCAR, you
- 13:24know, even though Priest said what he's going to do and he did
- 13:26it. I mean, it was so it was so far
- 13:28after that, you know, and you, you could look at it and yet you
- 13:32can look at it as a judgement when he did, when he did wreck
- 13:35the guy. You can look at it like, well,
- 13:37yeah, I don't know if that was really intentional or not.
- 13:40You know, intentional is Matt Kenseth with Logano at
- 13:43Martinsville. Everybody knows that was
- 13:46intense. You look at that and you there's
- 13:47no doubt in your mind that was intentional, right?
- 13:50In these deals that happened, these deals.
- 13:52And and if you look at Bush's deal, you pretty much I'm not
- 13:55sure that was intentional. OK.
- 13:57But the priest deal, man, you could give 5050, right?
- 14:00And even with the data explanation from NASCAR, you
- 14:03could you could make the point Kyle Bush, you know, turned it
- 14:06left, maybe got damaged when they hit they had damage and he
- 14:09couldn't get it turned right. So I don't know.
- 14:13I just I just I don't know. I just don't I don't I don't go
- 14:16along with that one and I just didn't see it coming.
- 14:18But you know, it is what it is. And again, the case in point,
- 14:22drivers, keep your damn mouth shut.
- 14:24If you're going to wreck somebody, don't talk about it.
- 14:26And then after you do it don't when you after you do it
- 14:28tonight, just a night to the hill, right.
- 14:31So the only chance you got the chase did that some word.
- 14:34He he he wrecked somebody. Then he denied it.
- 14:36But they they suspended him, didn't he?
- 14:39Right. Yeah, well, that he hooked Denny
- 14:41in the in the dog leg. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:43That was it. One of the one of the trio of
- 14:45dog leg tracks. We got it there.
- 14:47Yeah. And that was.
- 14:49Yeah, I'm. Well, first of all, I'm with
- 14:50you. I don't think either one of them
- 14:51should have been docked or or fined or any of that.
- 14:53They can think fine, but I don't think either one of them should
- 14:55have lost points for it. So.
- 14:57And it does, even though like there's they got the audio
- 15:00priest. I, I am with you.
- 15:01Like it. It just it gets a little bit
- 15:04more magnified because you had two incidents and, and I'm with
- 15:08you. I think Kyle Busch's was
- 15:09intentional as well. So it just looks bad when you
- 15:12have one going. The other I keep thinking of
- 15:14this is like, you know, baseball's obviously my my
- 15:17favorite, my my first love of sports.
- 15:21And it's like when, when you know, you guys have the Chrome
- 15:24horn and there's the old school like conduct or things you do to
- 15:27like, you know, take care of it. Yeah, retaliate, whatever, take
- 15:30care of it. In baseball, you, you drill a
- 15:32guy, you know, the pitcher hits a guy for whatever, for
- 15:35retaliation or for whatever reason, Even if everybody in the
- 15:38ballpark knows it was an it was on purpose after after the game
- 15:43that you get a microphone that manager the the pitcher's face
- 15:46and say not by he wouldn't try. He's not trying to hit him
- 15:49there. Ball slipped out of his hands.
- 15:50I mean, he's, you know, he's trying to go trying to go inside
- 15:53on him. Ball slipped out of his hands.
- 15:54I mean, what would he why would he try to go out?
- 15:56Why would he try to hit him there?
- 15:58And you know, most of the time everybody can know is it's he
- 16:02meant he meant to hit him, he meant to do it.
- 16:04Yeah, but you can't come out. But you can't come out after the
- 16:08game say, Oh yeah, I meant to hit him.
- 16:10He had it coming. They hit my guy.
- 16:11So I drilled him right in the back.
- 16:14You can't say that because then you get suspended and you lose 5
- 16:17games worth of pay, which in in baseball is a whole lot of pay
- 16:21regardless of what level you get.
- 16:22So yeah, for us as fans and wanting entertainment, it'd be
- 16:26great if they could say exactly what they did and why they did
- 16:29it and how they feel about it, but you just can't do it.
- 16:34No, no, you can't. I mean you, you, you get
- 16:37yourself in trouble, you know, What the hell are you?
- 16:40Did you ever, at the cup level, did you ever retaliate against
- 16:44somebody, get somebody back? I don't remember you ever
- 16:48getting in any skirmishes like that.
- 16:51You know what learned really learned coming up as a teenager
- 16:56on dirt truck and local short tracks started to deny Outlaws
- 16:59and then the years of running the Bush Series.
- 17:03You really learned that craft or that art of racing, clean
- 17:09racing, dirty racing and fighting.
- 17:12And it's like Schrader always said, man, when these things
- 17:15happen after the race, you're going to go after somebody.
- 17:18It's it's a whole lot easier on everybody if you just sit down
- 17:21and have a beer and talk about it instead of fighting about it.
- 17:25But but yeah, those things happen sometimes in my career.
- 17:30It was a you had to mark your territory a little bit.
- 17:35You know, in those days when you, when you made a move up, I
- 17:38mean, running the local tracks and you moved up from hobby to
- 17:41the next division or whatever, you, you, you always had to mark
- 17:44your territory. You couldn't let anybody take
- 17:47advantage of you, you know, and you had to do it quick.
- 17:50You had to do it real early when you moved up that rank, right?
- 17:54And because if you didn't, man, you're a marked man, you're a
- 17:56marked racer, you're going to get taken advantage of you.
- 17:58So you had to, you had to do that.
- 18:00And, and along with that came some issues at, at some, at some
- 18:04point, right, at sometimes. And you just had to handle those
- 18:08issues. You had to take care of them.
- 18:10And you know, you learn from these guys, right?
- 18:13And then as you go progress and go through the different stages
- 18:17right on up the cup, you learn from everybody each step you
- 18:21take. And then once you get
- 18:23established, then you, you're the teacher, right?
- 18:26And when you're the teacher, sometimes you know the student
- 18:30doesn't understand what he's being taught and you have to go
- 18:35the extra mile to make him understand what you're trying to
- 18:38teach the guy. And some guys, well, most
- 18:42everybody always gets it right. They always get it.
- 18:45But I can count on one hand the the retaliations that I've done
- 18:52for just flat bad racing or aggravate.
- 18:57And the other thing that happens, you get aggravated
- 18:59sometimes. Sometimes you just it's hot,
- 19:01you're tired, you're pissed off, your car's not doing this.
- 19:03You had a shot and something went wrong and somebody's trying
- 19:06to take advantage of you. And you're not going to you're
- 19:08not going to let that happen, right?
- 19:10You're going, you're going to protect your territory.
- 19:14And you know, it's always been that way.
- 19:16It was that that's the way I was brought up, man, as a teenager.
- 19:19That's the way I watched it. That's the way I was taught.
- 19:22That's the way I did the teaching.
- 19:23That's the way it happened. And again, it made, it made for
- 19:27quite a few uneasy situations, let's put it that way, right?
- 19:31And you just had you learned through the years how to work
- 19:34through those situations with another competitor or another
- 19:38competitor's crew or another competitor's family, OK, You
- 19:42just, you had to learn how to do all those things.
- 19:45And again, you had to protect your territory just like a,
- 19:48you're just like a, you're just like a dog, man protecting your
- 19:51territory. I mean, really, when you're a
- 19:53Cup driver, Ricky, you're you're what?
- 19:54How many drivers? What's your starting field
- 19:57nowadays? 36, Is that what it is?
- 19:59Yeah, they'll call it 30. 6. And our day was 43.
- 20:02So basically me, Rick Mast, I was there full time 12 years,
- 20:07and I was one of 43 people every Sunday doing something that
- 20:10literally 10s of thousands of people would give anything to be
- 20:14a part of, right? To be a part of that.
- 20:16So consequently or, or if the consequences of that is a lot of
- 20:20things go into protecting your territory right on the
- 20:24racetrack, off the racetrack politically, just a lot of
- 20:27things, lot of things goes on with being a Cup driver, or at
- 20:31least it was when I came through.
- 20:33And I'm sure a lot of it still still holds true today.
- 20:37A lot of people you got to answer to a lot of people that
- 20:40you can't you can't you can't do wrong things with.
- 20:43And to make it all work, you know, so and and and their own
- 20:47track thing. Yeah, that's part of it, right.
- 20:50And that goes into like our boy Hosavar.
- 20:53What in the hell? What in the hell is a Met Gala?
- 20:56What what? What is a Met I?
- 20:57Never heard. A Met Gala I guess Jeff Gordon
- 21:00did it years ago and now here's Hosavar doing a Met Gala.
- 21:04What is that Ricky? Explain.
- 21:06I wrote about it and still didn't fully understand it.
- 21:08Well, first of all, I don't even know.
- 21:10This is how little I know about these kinds of things.
- 21:12I don't still don't even know if it's properly pronounced gala or
- 21:16gala kind of like data or data. I still don't know which is
- 21:19right. No, no, no, you might be right.
- 21:20I have no idea that's what I'm saying.
- 21:21I don't know probably about gala.
- 21:23It probably is gala. I mean I've heard it both ways.
- 21:25I don't know. So I say all that because that
- 21:28shows you how much I know about it.
- 21:29If it's gala or gala, I don't even know that part right.
- 21:32So here's what I do know. I work in social media.
- 21:35So every year, whenever they have the gala or the gala, I
- 21:38start seeing all these videos and pictures of all these famous
- 21:41people wearing goofy outfits going into I guess it's the Met
- 21:45in New York Metropolitan. I was getting ready to say the
- 21:49full name of the museum. And I don't even know that.
- 21:52So but I see them all going in these goofy outfits for this big
- 21:55fancy schmancy deal, something that you and me and a lot of
- 21:59people we know probably would have no clue what we were, what
- 22:01to do there, why we're there. But I saw Hosovar was there and
- 22:05you know what, from what little I saw, it seemed like he was
- 22:07having a good time and being himself and just take it in
- 22:11stride. And I'll, I'll say this, I saw
- 22:14people on both sides of it online, just just, I mean, the,
- 22:20the, the overreaction to this on either direction was like, some
- 22:24people were like, this is the greatest thing ever.
- 22:27This is what we need. This is, this is huge, this is
- 22:31huge. And there's other people sitting
- 22:34there going what in the this is the worst thing I've ever seen.
- 22:37And I'm like, I don't know, guys, to me, it's just like a a
- 22:40rising star NASCAR got put in a event that maybe you wouldn't
- 22:44usually see a NASCAR driver. He had fun with it.
- 22:48And as he said, he's back racing his dirt late model.
- 22:51I think tomorrow night, like, I don't know, I didn't the
- 22:55overreaction to it either way was was pretty wild out there, I
- 22:58thought. But to answer your question, I
- 23:00have no idea. I really still don't really even
- 23:02know what it is. I just know it's a thing that
- 23:03exists. Yeah, well, it tells you they
- 23:08got something that they got something to work for that guy,
- 23:10right? We got we've got we've got
- 23:13whether it be Spire Motorsports or NASCAR, They're they're
- 23:17they've jumped on the coast and host of our bandwagon man right
- 23:21to send him to the Met Gala or whatever the hell that thing is.
- 23:25And I'm just saying that because of the the I'm just saying that
- 23:28because of the I saw two or three interviews, it was it was
- 23:32done with him. Entertainment Tonight and
- 23:34different things, right, that other people had copied.
- 23:36And I'm like, all right, we're going to try to do some stuff
- 23:39with this guy. He's going to be our next
- 23:41superstar. We'll see how this goes.
- 23:43So hopefully it works out. Man, He's real.
- 23:47He's real. You got to give.
- 23:48You got to give him credit. The boy's real.
- 23:50Well, that's what I was going to say.
- 23:51I think that's what makes it work regardless of the
- 23:54situation. I think they feel comfortable
- 23:57putting him in situations like that because they think because
- 24:00he's comfortable, he seems to me like he's pretty comfortable in
- 24:02his own skin, no matter what situation you're putting him in
- 24:05and that he's just going to kind of have fun with it.
- 24:08And I think that's what you, that's what you need.
- 24:11That that's where I would now that is, well, if we're going to
- 24:14get deep into the analysis of him being at this thing, that
- 24:17that's where I would go with it is like, I think that's a, it's
- 24:19a it's a good thing. They feel like they got a guy
- 24:22they can put in situations that are not normal for a NASCAR
- 24:26driver, right. So I don't, I don't think that's
- 24:28a bad thing. I also don't think it's like, Oh
- 24:30my God, this is the greatest thing that's ever happened.
- 24:32I don't think it's Oh my God, this is the worst thing that's
- 24:34ever happened. I just thought to me, I thought,
- 24:37alright, well, that's cool. And then I'm also looking at
- 24:39these outfits that the celebs are wearing.
- 24:41I'm just like I don't every year this thing shows up and it's
- 24:45just I don't know that I just don't think I was meant to.
- 24:50I don't think I'm I don't think I'm refined enough or
- 24:54highfalutin enough to a even understand what this what this
- 25:00deal is and B ever even be be a part of it or invited to it.
- 25:04So Carson was like the most normal looking dress guy.
- 25:08That's all of the few things I saw.
- 25:10So I don't know. I don't know what that was.
- 25:13I don't know. Hey, I'll circle back to
- 25:15something. No, it's gonna be, it's gonna be
- 25:17interesting. It's going to be interesting.
- 25:19I I wanted to circle back real quick.
- 25:20You were talking about marking your territory in Texas and or
- 25:24as a driver going back to the Texas thing.
- 25:27I kept thinking about when you're saying this, this is a
- 25:29little bit of an extreme or barbaric example of it, but
- 25:32protecting your territory, right.
- 25:34I was thinking about there's an episode of Sopranos, one of my
- 25:38favorite shows ever, where Tony is coming back.
- 25:42You know, he's the he's the he's the boss.
- 25:44He gets shot, almost dies, recovers, and that's his first
- 25:48day, first day back at work as the mob boss, which, you know,
- 25:52their office was upstairs at the bottom being the strip club.
- 25:54And that's where they would, you know, hang out or whatever.
- 25:56But it's Tony's first day back and he's still moving pretty
- 26:00slow and in a lot of pain and, and whatever.
- 26:03And there's something happens where he's looking around the
- 26:05room and he realizes that his crew can detect a little bit of
- 26:11weakness in him. And he knows that that's a
- 26:15problem. If you're a mob boss and the
- 26:17anybody around you suspects weakness, that's a big, big
- 26:21problem. And so he picks out like the the
- 26:24low guy on the totem pole in the room.
- 26:26He's like this big bodybuilder guy.
- 26:27He's like a security guy or something, much younger, in the
- 26:31best shape by far of any of these guys, big muscles and
- 26:33everything. And Tony just picks him out and
- 26:37picks up and makes up a reason to be mad at the guy and just
- 26:41beats ever 11 crap out of him in front of everybody.
- 26:44And he did it just as a sign of protecting his territory to
- 26:50like, this is mine and nobody else can take this from me.
- 26:53And I'm still I'm I may have been shot, I may have almost
- 26:55died. I can barely walk, but I still
- 26:57got just enough in me to beat up the the toughest guy in the
- 27:01room. And that's kind of what I was
- 27:03thinking about when you're talking about protecting your
- 27:04territories. Like you got a zillion people
- 27:06that want your gig and you'll do just about anything you want.
- 27:09Yeah, you have to do to protect it.
- 27:11So I don't know. I just thought that was like a I
- 27:15I just that that that was the first comparison that popped in
- 27:18my head. Did you do anything to protect?
- 27:19You got one of the 40 spots in the world that people want, and
- 27:22you'll do just about anything to protect it.
- 27:25Maybe it's an extreme example, I don't know.
- 27:27Yeah. That's a little extreme.
- 27:30Bring the Godfather in. Yeah, that's that's that's a
- 27:33little extreme. But the, the the premise is the
- 27:35same. The thought process is the same.
- 27:37It's the same deal, you know? Yeah.
- 27:40You don't pick out the biggest baddest dude in and and and try
- 27:44to whip him because it don't work like that sometimes in real
- 27:47life you. Know that's true.
- 27:51Well, I wanted to talk before we before we skid at all.
- 27:54I definitely wanted to talk about Watkins Glen because
- 27:56that's coming up this week, which my old brain is still
- 27:59programmed to every August we go to Watkins Glen.
- 28:01But obviously things have changed a lot since back in the
- 28:04day. But a couple of things with
- 28:07Watkins Glen I wanted to touch on with you.
- 28:10I want to talk about your wreck there in 93 and just Watkins
- 28:15Glen memories in in general 'cause I, I feel like for you,
- 28:18other than Rd. Atlanta in the old Bush series,
- 28:22now the O'Reilly series in the 80s, I think y'all ran there
- 28:24twice maybe in the 80s. Other than that, when you showed
- 28:28up in the Cup series full time, Sears Point, Watkins Glen, like
- 28:32is Rd. Atlanta twice in the Bush
- 28:33series, The only times you'd ever run a road course up to
- 28:35that point or just once? You only ran Road to Atlanta
- 28:40once. OK, I didn't realize that.
- 28:44So what was that like for you though?
- 28:46You especially, you've been at that point, what, almost 20
- 28:49years running ovals and then you're in the Cup series and you
- 28:53show up twice a year, Sears Point, Watkins Glen, running the
- 28:55road course. What was that like for you?
- 28:58Well, you had to really. I tried to put myself in it,
- 29:01man. I tried to really get good at
- 29:04trying to figure it out or trying to figure it out.
- 29:06We, the first time we went to Watkins Glen was a school and I
- 29:12guess that's right. And then we were up there on the
- 29:15on watch Hill, Rhode Island. The big week long vacation at
- 29:19school used to do with all the drivers.
- 29:21Then a while we were close to or not close, but we were pretty
- 29:24close. So that the team brought a car
- 29:26up there and we left the middle of the week and went over to
- 29:29Watkins Glen and, and did some practicing and Harry went with
- 29:32me. Harry Gant, 'cause he's, you
- 29:34know, he's on our team or for the school deal.
- 29:37I never forget. Harry took a piece of notebook
- 29:39paper and drew a map of the racetrack and showed it to me,
- 29:44right? He said, all right, Rick, here
- 29:45it is, here's the racetrack. And he said turn one, turn 2,
- 29:49turn 3, all that. Dude, I get on the race track
- 29:52and I don't know what in the hell, I don't know what.
- 29:54I wonder what track he was mapping.
- 29:56But it was, it was nothing. It was nothing like what I was
- 30:00witnessing out there, right? But the one thing I do remember
- 30:04that when when we were done that the first time I went out and I
- 30:07ran a few laps and I came in, I said, guys, I have raced all
- 30:10over this country, every little short track and big tracks.
- 30:13And I've been, I've been so many race tracks, like so many of
- 30:16those days, I said. But I just went through the most
- 30:18dangerous turn of any race track of anywhere I've ever raced.
- 30:23And that's the end of the back straightaway, back there on top
- 30:26of the hill and the very back end, right.
- 30:29And that's a race. When we go back for the race and
- 30:32we lose JD Mcduffie had a problem going into that turn and
- 30:35and we lost JD. And then right after that, they
- 30:38put the chicane in OK, to slow you down before you got to that
- 30:42most dangerous turn that I'd ever saw.
- 30:45And but it was, it was, you know, it's just a different,
- 30:48it's a different craft. It's a different, you know what
- 30:51it's, it's, it's, you know, we, we all of us drivers, we would,
- 30:56we'd all try to do the same thing like you do on an Oval.
- 30:59You hold it deep, as deep as you can get into the turn before you
- 31:02get out of the gas and, you know, hope it sticks and hope
- 31:05it, hope it turns and all the jump back in the gas.
- 31:09The guys that were really good on the road courses learned real
- 31:12quick. And it took me, it took me a
- 31:13while to figure it out. It's more about back in your
- 31:18apex, apex up, you don't overcharge the turns.
- 31:21You get out of the gas or you get deep as you can, but really
- 31:24stand on the brake more. It's a, it's a whole different
- 31:27technique. OK, and, and, and in those days,
- 31:30man, the road course guys, they would come in and they would
- 31:32always be top of the charts speed and they would qualify
- 31:35real good. But during the race, the, the,
- 31:38the, the talent of the cup drivers would always prevail
- 31:41during the race. And those guys would, you know,
- 31:43shuffle the road course ringers back some, not all of them, but
- 31:47but anyhow, they all, they all used to run good with us.
- 31:49But you know, you're talking about the wreck.
- 31:53We had just started that race. We'd run maybe 6 or 7 laps.
- 31:56We're going into turn. I don't know the number of the
- 31:59turn. It's the last one before the
- 32:00last one. OK, It's, it's two turns before
- 32:03the end and I guess you're going in it, you're going in it long
- 32:06straight and you get just to get to the 4th gear and you
- 32:10immediately get 4th and go back to 3rd down to second.
- 32:12You downshift hard, sharp 90° left-hander and we're going to
- 32:17run it, run it alone 6-7 laps, man.
- 32:20And hit the brake pedal, went to the floor.
- 32:22I'm like, oh crap. So it went off the race track.
- 32:25I got it turned a little bit when it went off the track.
- 32:29And you know, and I tell people all the time, man, if you race
- 32:31long enough, you know, when something goes wrong, you, you,
- 32:34you know the speed and you know the angle you're at, you know
- 32:38what the impact's going to feel like.
- 32:39OK, you've, you've done it enough.
- 32:41And you kind of know how hard a hit you're going to take.
- 32:43When that thing went off the racetrack, I'm like, oh shit,
- 32:45man, I think I might have bought it here, right?
- 32:48I'm like, I don't know if I'm going to overcome this one.
- 32:51But luckily it was a, you know, what was it, I don't know, maybe
- 32:567500 yards off the racetrack before you got to the wall and
- 33:00the wall had a stock of tires up and behind the tires was
- 33:03guardrail. And then they hit with the right
- 33:07rear of the car. So which is the softest part of
- 33:09the race car and all that stuff gave enough to where it didn't,
- 33:14you know, it didn't, didn't send me into the promised land at
- 33:17that at that time, you know, so, but boy, it hurt.
- 33:22Funny part about that. We go back to the next race and
- 33:24next year we're in, we're in the garage, we're practicing.
- 33:27I'm in the garage. And I hear Ricky Rudge had a
- 33:30wreck. And then they tell her she
- 33:32wrecked the same turn that I wrecked, right.
- 33:36Well, Ricky came to me later on that day, said, man, Rick, I got
- 33:40to thank you, dude. I said thank me for what?
- 33:42He said, did you know what happened me up there?
- 33:45I said, yeah, I'm not sure. He said, I want that turn.
- 33:48I hit the brake pedal. My brake pedal went to the
- 33:50floor. He said, oh, crap.
- 33:52He said, I went off the track. He said, man, I think it's going
- 33:56to kill me, right? And he said, I hit that pea
- 33:59gravel and it's just like a big vacuum sucked that car up and
- 34:04ran right into the wall where they put these big stacks of
- 34:07Styrofoam. He says, I said, OK.
- 34:10He said when it finally hit it, this went pal.
- 34:13And I'm like, man, Ricky, I'm I'm telling what Ricky said,
- 34:17man, that didn't that didn't hurt.
- 34:19It didn't wasn't that hard. He said I got to thank Rick Mass
- 34:22for this because when I Rick after my wreck, they went in
- 34:25there then and redesigned and put all the pea gravel down, you
- 34:28know, and they put the big Styrofoam blocks and all up
- 34:31against the wall. So but I'll never forget Ricky
- 34:34come down thanking me flat. I don't know what he's talking
- 34:36about. Start with right.
- 34:37So that was pretty cool. The wreck wasn't cool.
- 34:41The wreck wasn't cool. I suffered with that for a
- 34:43while. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:45And then both with a fracture in your shoulder somewhere out of
- 34:47that deal, didn't you? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:52When you when you had that wreck, it was just nothing but
- 34:55grass all the way to the to the wall, to the tires.
- 34:58You watch the replay of that wreck, I swear it almost looks
- 35:00like you pick up speed in that freaking grass.
- 35:02It's crazy looking. I I can tell you this, that was
- 35:05the one time I ever went to Watkins Glen was that year, I
- 35:07believe it was 93 when you had that wreck.
- 35:10I think we've had the flight from hell to get up there.
- 35:13I think that was the day we were in the in the air.
- 35:15Mom and I were in the air when when there was tornadoes and
- 35:19everything and and that's just the worst, worst flight I've
- 35:22ever had in my life. I believe it was it was that
- 35:24same weekend. Anyways, we get up there now at
- 35:26this point, this is 1993. So we don't have ATV or anything
- 35:32to see what's happening around the track.
- 35:34We're in the pit box. The only thing we can see is for
- 35:36you right when you drive by once a lap.
- 35:39Got no clue what else is going on other that and then and then
- 35:42the radio. So obviously, like you said, we
- 35:45you know, we hadn't been down there but a few laps and then
- 35:48you reckon so we really didn't know mom and I really didn't
- 35:51know. We didn't know what condition
- 35:54you were in or nothing. But at the same time, they, I
- 35:57don't remember either of us being worried or anything They
- 36:00said, well, you know, we'll go meet him at the infield care
- 36:02center going all right. Again, you've you've right
- 36:05before. We're not sitting there freaking
- 36:07out or anything. We get there and the head of
- 36:10MRO, which is motor race and outreach is Max Hilton at the
- 36:13time. Now that's for people who don't
- 36:14know motor race and outreach. That's the the ministry, the
- 36:17Chapel service that travels to the track each week.
- 36:19And that's where drivers and families go to church.
- 36:21They set up every week at the track and they do a lot of other
- 36:24things too, Take care of all the kids and do a lot of great
- 36:27things for, for the NASCAR community.
- 36:29Well, at that time, the the head of it was Max Helen.
- 36:32He was the main pastor or chaplain and he meets me and mom
- 36:37at the infield care center before you get there.
- 36:40And I don't know how it works nowadays, but I feel like in
- 36:42those days, if, if Max or one of the main guys from MRO is there
- 36:46to meet you at the hospital. A lot of times that was, you're
- 36:49talking about going to the promised land or not getting
- 36:51over this one. That was, I mean, all jokes
- 36:53aside, that was, that was a possibility if, if they're there
- 36:56to meet you and, but still, I don't remember us freaking out
- 37:00too much. Well, then the ambulance pulls
- 37:01up when they pull you out of it. And I guess it just so happened
- 37:04that you had your eyes closed when when they pulled you out of
- 37:06the ambulance. I'm glad we can laugh about this
- 37:08now. I can.
- 37:09I can still picture it clear as they now they pull.
- 37:11Yeah. You're on the stretcher.
- 37:12Your eyes are closed. And you looked, you looked like
- 37:16really pale. I mean, you really did.
- 37:18I'm not making that up. And and that's all we see is you
- 37:22pale eyes shut and they whiskey away.
- 37:25And then Max Hilton takes us and it's just me and Mom and him in
- 37:28a room in a darkly, dimly lit room and him trying to make
- 37:31small talk. And I started getting upset.
- 37:35And the mom was getting upset and it was just getting, it was
- 37:37getting real serious real quick. And we really didn't know what
- 37:41was going on. And finally somebody at nurse or
- 37:43somebody comes in, says, OK, young, young, come see him.
- 37:48And now, granted, I want you to remember, remember this.
- 37:51We're thinking you might be dead at this point, or at least I was
- 37:5510 years old. I thought you might be dead.
- 37:56We, we go in there to see you and there you are putting on
- 37:59your street clothes. You're down to you.
- 38:01I think you just had your tighty whities on.
- 38:02You're laughing, putting putting clothes back on about something.
- 38:05I'm like, well, he definitely ain't dead.
- 38:08He's just sitting here laughing in his underwear.
- 38:10He's not dead, thank goodness. I'll tell you the the other
- 38:13thing I remember though, Dad, I would never forget this.
- 38:16We, you know you, they check you out of the infield care center
- 38:18and we head back to the garage and go to the truck to, you
- 38:21know, pick up, pick up stuff, whatever you need to do.
- 38:23You, I assume you probably debriefed with, with crew or
- 38:26whatever. And I will never forget.
- 38:28We're walking up to your, we see your car, it's been brought in,
- 38:31it's in the garage. And I can see the, let's see
- 38:36which side you hit on. Passenger side.
- 38:38Driver. Yeah, right rear.
- 38:40Yeah. Passenger.
- 38:40Yeah, right, right side. So you hit on the right side.
- 38:43So we're walking up and we can see the left side, the driver's
- 38:45side. And it honestly, from what I can
- 38:47see, and again, I've not seen a replay of it, have no idea what
- 38:50happened to you. We're walking up to it and the
- 38:53driver's side looked pretty clean.
- 38:54They really did like it didn't look, didn't look too banged up
- 38:57or anything. I wouldn't.
- 38:59This is why I'll never forget. We walk around to the other side
- 39:02and that car was absolutely demolished.
- 39:06I mean, just as torn up as I've ever seen any car of yours that
- 39:10any wreck you were ever in. I mean, that car was just
- 39:12demolished. And we're looking, and we're
- 39:14looking at that going, holy crap.
- 39:16Like finally, once we saw the replay of you hitting the tires
- 39:20and, you know, doing a 360 in the air and everything is like,
- 39:23yeah, that makes sense with what we saw.
- 39:25But I would never forget that of just being completely kind of
- 39:29dumbfounded as how as to how 1/2 of that car looked completely
- 39:33fine and clean and the other half was just demolished.
- 39:35Man, it was. Was that the hardest hit you
- 39:37think you ever took? That or the week before at
- 39:42Talladega when Jimmy Horton went over the wall at Talladega.
- 39:46Oh yeah, that was a hard lick. That was a hard lick that day.
- 39:50And I was still, I was still stinging from that when the
- 39:55friggin race would get to Watkins Glen.
- 39:56And then that happened. But you know, Ricky, really The
- 39:59thing is that in those days, man, it was so hard on families
- 40:03and I, you're there as a driver. It is what it is, but.
- 40:07You know, we lost some guys and, and, and, and you know, the, it
- 40:12was really hard, like, like you just explained.
- 40:14I mean, you know, I'm sitting here thinking about, I'm like,
- 40:16yeah, it was, it is what it is. But it was, it was really a lot.
- 40:20It was harder, harder on the families, I think.
- 40:22Well, I shouldn't say harder. It was hard in those days on the
- 40:25family, 'cause we did, you know, we did suffer some tragedies,
- 40:29You know, we did suffer some injuries and hurts.
- 40:32And, you know, Max Hilton showing up at the infield
- 40:36carrier with the wife, with the children, you know, that was
- 40:39never, that was never a good situation.
- 40:42But, you know, you just accepted it, right.
- 40:44Basically what it amounts to, man, if you're going to wreck
- 40:47them, I mean, if you go race, if you're going to wreck them, you
- 40:49know, and when you wreck them, sometimes it hurts and sometimes
- 40:52when it hurts, you get hurt, right.
- 40:55And then sometimes it gets worse than that.
- 40:56But that, that was just part of the part of the gig in those
- 40:59days. So, you know, we all got through
- 41:01it. Yeah.
- 41:02Yeah. There's.
- 41:04You know, there's I have 99.9% amazingly great memories from
- 41:09your time in it. The the 1.1 that it's, it's
- 41:13always just just wish I'd, you know, you wish that couldn't
- 41:16happen is just seeing, seeing families and and stuff.
- 41:19When, when things didn't go, when things went wrong and
- 41:22seeing, seeing, you know, that I don't know, just things that I
- 41:26don't even know. I want to share here.
- 41:27But these things that like that was tough.
- 41:29And and then selfishly, you're kind of you.
- 41:32You're like, well, I'm glad. I'm glad my dad's OK, you know?
- 41:38Yeah. Which?
- 41:39Is which is what it is. It's.
- 41:40Selfish. It's selfish.
- 41:42I hate to sit here and say that I had that feeling sometimes,
- 41:45but but I did. I'd be lying if I if I said
- 41:48otherwise so, but thankfully you know the crazy.
- 41:51Part about it, yeah. The crazy part about that,
- 41:54Ricky, during those times when that was going on, when I was
- 41:57racing, we were all, we were always thinking back about like
- 42:01the guys right now, look, you know, and they're pretty safe
- 42:03with what they do. And they look back at our era,
- 42:05you know, where we lost some guys.
- 42:06But when I was racing, we would look back at the guys before us
- 42:10a decade or a couple decades before us and the kind of cars
- 42:13they had and the safety equipment they had, you know,
- 42:16and the tragedies those people suffered.
- 42:19And we were so thankful that we were in the modern, modern era
- 42:23and our cars were so much safer than what those guys were.
- 42:27You know, it was 20 years before us and now looking back on our
- 42:31deals, like, damn, this kind of this car is really kind of
- 42:34barbaric. It's some of the things that we
- 42:37raced right in those days. It's, it's funny how that works
- 42:40'cause you, you're sitting there racing, you think you're in the
- 42:42safest thing that that's available.
- 42:45And we were at that point, you again, you don't know what you
- 42:47don't know, especially about safety in those days.
- 42:50But they've come such a long ways with that deal, man, right?
- 42:53And you know, knock on wood, we haven't had, we haven't had any
- 42:57issues in a long time. We don't win any, don't need
- 42:59any, don't want any either. So yeah, I don't know.
- 43:02If you and I have talked to you and I have talked about this
- 43:04before, I don't know if we've talked about it on mass cast.
- 43:06So I'll go ahead and I'll go ahead and bring it up.
- 43:08Since we're, we're in this, this topic, I have a theory that to
- 43:13become a race car driver at the, at the cup level or at one of
- 43:16the highest levels of, of Motorsports, you have to have
- 43:20such a supreme confidence in yourself and your ability.
- 43:23And, and I mean this in a good way.
- 43:26You have to think I'm just the greatest, I'm the greatest
- 43:28driver there is on planet earth, right?
- 43:30And I think you have to have that kind of ultimate self
- 43:33self-confidence to make it to that level.
- 43:36And I feel like, you know, driver will be a standard line,
- 43:40or at least back in the day. It's like, well, we accept the
- 43:42risk, you know, we we know what's what could happen here
- 43:45and all that. I would say that I feel like
- 43:47race car drivers deep down, because of that belief in
- 43:50themselves, don't think it's ever going to happen to them
- 43:53that they're never going to be the one that's that the dies in
- 43:56a race car right. I think that's might say the
- 43:59right things like, well, you know, it could happen when we
- 44:01accept the risk, but I don't think any of y'all ever actually
- 44:04believe that. Is that a fair theory on my
- 44:07part? Yeah, it's.
- 44:09It's going to be somebody else, right?
- 44:11That, that that's your thought process.
- 44:14Yeah, shit. That ain't going to happen to
- 44:15me, man. That's going to be him.
- 44:16That's going to happen to him. It ain't going to happen to me,
- 44:18Right? It's just, I don't know, it's
- 44:20weird, 'cause like I said, man, at certain intelligence level,
- 44:23you cannot exceed to be a NASCAR Cup driver.
- 44:25You know, I just, I always tell people that and get a joke out
- 44:29of it. But it's, it's true.
- 44:31You didn't, you just didn't, you know, you, you, you respected
- 44:35it. You know, you feared it.
- 44:37You know, you knew what the risks were, but I also thought,
- 44:41really, you know what, it's not going to happen to me, but it
- 44:44could, but it's not going to happen to me, you know.
- 44:47And then what happens, you sit around and you, you go and you
- 44:50start racing and you look around and 1st you lose this buddy,
- 44:53right? Then you lose this guy, then
- 44:55that guy you don't even know, and then then on and on and on.
- 44:59And it starts taking, it starts adding up.
- 45:01You're like, damn this, you know, we got to do something
- 45:04about all this stuff, but it doesn't really affect you or
- 45:07change what you do or how you think about things or do
- 45:11anything. It's just, I don't know, just
- 45:13it's a weird deal. Somebody ought to figure that
- 45:16out sometime, I guess. Well, you know, but again, you
- 45:19know, the guys today don't have to deal with that.
- 45:21They just don't have to deal with it.
- 45:23And I'm, I'm thankful for them for that.
- 45:25I'm thankful that they do not. That's one part of it.
- 45:29They just don't have to think about.
- 45:31Well, you 2 weeks ago we lost so and so, right?
- 45:34Or, you know, back six months ago over in that term, we lost
- 45:37so and so, right? These guys, you know, they're 20
- 45:40years of age or whatever they've come up.
- 45:42They didn't. They just never had to deal with
- 45:44it. That part of the middle part of
- 45:46our sport. And hopefully it stays that way
- 45:49for them. Yeah, I hope it does.
- 45:50Yeah, I'm thankful for it. Too.
- 45:52I can tell you the way you said that about ain't gonna happen to
- 45:56me, I'm gonna happen to somebody else, gonna happen to me.
- 45:59I think I don't want to speak for all families I know speaking
- 46:01for me. Looking back on it, I think that
- 46:04I think that's probably how I felt too as a kid, because when,
- 46:07when you were driving, like you said, you did lose people, but I
- 46:11never really felt like I never felt like it was you.
- 46:14It only became real, a real possibility when a Watkins Glen
- 46:18happened, when a wreck would happen, you know, but never with
- 46:20somebody, you know, with with somebody else.
- 46:23It was that, that's when it was like you kind of, I don't know,
- 46:26maybe it's like a self-defense kind of thing or like a defense
- 46:31mechanism against just, if you sit there and worry about it,
- 46:35you, you drive yourself absolutely insane worrying about
- 46:38it, right? So you just, I'll tell you what
- 46:40do what do. Rick, this week with all your
- 46:43connections, you have work for the Braves, get Doctor Phil on
- 46:45here. Next week, we'll get Doctor Phil
- 46:48on here and we'll get him. We'll get him to explain this to
- 46:51us, right? Because we're getting in.
- 46:53We're doing some work where I don't think we need to be trying
- 46:55to figure out at this point, but but Doctor Phil would do it.
- 46:59Reckon he would come on mass cast.
- 47:01I bet he would. I I mean.
- 47:03Maybe the worst. Thing say is no.
- 47:06So I'll, I'll see what I can do. Well, yeah, exactly right.
- 47:08Exactly right. Well, all the morbid stuff.
- 47:11Aside, it'll be fun to fun to watch.
- 47:14Watch the race this weekend. Chase won last week.
- 47:17I think he got his first win at Watkins Glen so could be 1 to
- 47:20watch course. SVGI know Reddick won the won
- 47:23the 1st Rd. course race this year at Coda so I feel like
- 47:26that's going to be one thing to watch going into it.
- 47:28Is SVGS dominance going to return or is track house still
- 47:32kind of down too much? Is Reddit going to return?
- 47:34Is Connor Zillich going to show up and do so?
- 47:36I don't know. It's just a it'll be a fun, fun
- 47:39race this weekend. And like you said, I'm it will
- 47:41be. Yeah, that.
- 47:42We got some storylines. We got some storylines.
- 47:45There's no doubt. Yeah.
- 47:46Before we go, I think we need to give a shout out.
- 47:48I want to give a shout out. Kyle Petty, Charity Roderick,
- 47:51those guys for all you got, all you listers go on social media,
- 47:55pull up Kyle Petty Charity ride and just follow it, right?
- 47:59I mean, they started what his day.
- 48:02She used the they started Sunday, whatever day it was
- 48:04Monday. Well, I forget what's anyhow,
- 48:07it's the neatest deal to follow, right?
- 48:09It's Kyle and Kenny and Kenny and I think Clint's with them
- 48:14now. Matt Kinser's with them now, the
- 48:16Kings, other folk, a lot of folks.
- 48:18But it's neat. They've been doing all these
- 48:20stops here in Wichita. I think today and the last two
- 48:23days, wherever they're stopping, it's got these long lines, man,
- 48:26of people wanting autographs. You know, I never witnessed that
- 48:30before with this thing. But any of you that haven't, if
- 48:34you, if you live anywhere near this thing, when they're coming
- 48:36through each year, when they come anywhere close to you, make
- 48:40it make up, make an effort and just go see them at a stop or
- 48:43whatever, wherever they might be.
- 48:45I mean, I've been fortunate enough to do that a few times
- 48:48and it is absolutely one of the neatest deals that you'll ever
- 48:51see. It's just it's kind of like,
- 48:54it's kind of like going to the race.
- 48:55You've never been to the race before.
- 48:56You can't explain it to people. Just go and watch the race and
- 49:00then you'll understand. And it's kind of like the Kyle
- 49:02Petty charity ride. Just go and if you can, if you
- 49:04can view it and see it, just do that.
- 49:06If you can't, man, just go on social media.
- 49:09When you when you when you go off a mask ass, go and see
- 49:12social media and pull that thing up and just start watching the
- 49:15videos and the pictures and the comments and all.
- 49:18It's just, it's one of the coolest things man ever.
- 49:20It just truly is. It really is they've.
- 49:23Come through our neck of the woods up there in rot red baths
- 49:25a couple of times. And I think that one year when
- 49:28our old buddy Johnny Hayes was still with us, we stood out in
- 49:31front of Johnny's place and held up a couple of signs.
- 49:34And then the Petty's the King, Kyle, everybody spotted us and
- 49:38pulled over. And I never forget the king
- 49:40jumping off his bike, giving you a hug.
- 49:42And then of course, we went over to the homestead that night
- 49:44where they were staying and having to had dinner.
- 49:46And it really is. It's one of the coolest things.
- 49:49Kyle's been doing that thing forever.
- 49:51I mean, he was doing it for the Winston Cup, you know, wives
- 49:53organization back in the 90s and loses Adam, of course.
- 49:57And then now everything goes to the Victory Junction gang camp.
- 50:00And it's just, it's such a it's, it's a worthy cause for sure.
- 50:04And it's also just an awesome cause and really, really a fun
- 50:07deal all around. So definitely do that 30.
- 50:10Years. Is this 30 years?
- 50:12Yeah. That's that's pretty awesome.
- 50:14Good deal. All right then.
- 50:16Well, I had fun as always, and let's do it again next time.
- 50:20We'll do it, guys. Take care everybody to the loo.
