Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:10Speaker 1: your host Scott Brady, and I'm joined today by my
- 0:13Speaker 1: co host Matt Scott and we do the deep dive
- 0:16Speaker 1: on the principles of overlanding expedition vehicle campers. So these
- 0:20Speaker 1: are going to be the big expedition trucks that we
- 0:23Speaker 1: see all over Instagram, man trucks, Earth roamers, lmtvs. We're
- 0:28Speaker 1: going to talk about why large vehicles like that are
- 0:31Speaker 1: so popular for overlanding, how to prepare them properly, things
- 0:35Speaker 1: to consider around those vehicles, and why sometimes bigger just
- 0:40Speaker 1: might be better. And a special thanks to Rocky Talkies
- 0:45Speaker 1: for their support of this week's podcast. Rocky Talkies are
- 0:49Speaker 1: backcountry radios designed by a small team in Denver. The
- 0:53Speaker 1: radios are extremely rugged, easy to use, and compact, weighing
- 0:56Speaker 1: in just under eight ounces. They have a rainage of
- 1:00Speaker 1: one to five miles in the mountains and up to
- 1:02Speaker 1: twenty five miles line of site. The batteries will last
- 1:06Speaker 1: from three to five days and you can recharge them
- 1:09Speaker 1: easily via USBC right in the vehicle. Our team uses
- 1:13Speaker 1: Rocky Talkies and we also use them recently at the
- 1:16Speaker 1: Overland Expo. The next Overland Expo, stop into our booth
- 1:20Speaker 1: and say hello and check out the radius for yourself.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And as a listener of the Overland Journal podcast, you
- 1:26Speaker 1: can get ten percent off a pair by going to
- 1:29Speaker 1: Rockytalkie dot com forward slash Overland Journal. Thanks again, Rocky Talking. Okay, Matt,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so we're going to talk about the principles of overlanding
- 1:39Speaker 1: expedition vehicles. I'm excited for this one. This is my
- 1:42Speaker 1: specific it is and you have been doing a lot
- 1:45Speaker 1: of research on it recently. You've been spending a lot
- 1:47Speaker 1: of time on the category, and you also, I believe,
- 1:50Speaker 1: have a really strong argument for the benefits of it
- 1:52Speaker 1: and an understanding of the downsides because you've now owned
- 1:55Speaker 1: your Earth for how long?
- 1:56Speaker 2: OHI we bought it at the end of twenty twenty.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So yeah, that's that's the lot. That might be the
- 2:01Speaker 1: longest you've ever owned a car.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and I have zero interest in selling it. It
- 2:06Speaker 3: is like my prized possession, so to speak. It had
- 2:09Speaker 3: always been a goal, my goal when I was, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 3: just started working at Overland Journal ten years well, it
- 2:14Speaker 3: was more than ten years ago, it was twenty eleven.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I wanted an earth Roamer with a KTM rally bike back.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I've got an earth Roamer with a factory KTM rally
- 2:22Speaker 1: bike in the back. How did your life change when
- 2:25Speaker 1: you arrived at that goal? Like, what, it's something that
- 2:28Speaker 1: you've wanted forever.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I mean, obviously it was a lot of work and
- 2:30Speaker 2: a lot of stress.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I think I think that you know, to put it
- 2:34Speaker 3: in a way that maybe society would understand, is it's
- 2:37Speaker 3: my boat. It's my boat that I could do my
- 2:38Speaker 3: little projects on and I clean and it's my own
- 2:41Speaker 3: little ecosystem in the world that I have complete control over. Yeah,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you know, so and the way that you know, an
- 2:47Speaker 3: entrepreneur or executive or something might have that boat that's
- 2:51Speaker 3: their escape. The earth Roamer is my land boat, and
- 2:54Speaker 3: you know, it's actually finds. There's a lot of systems
- 2:56Speaker 3: that come from the marine world that they do super
- 3:00Speaker 3: applicable with expedition vehicles. But you know, we just found
- 3:03Speaker 3: out that we started getting out more and we changed
- 3:06Speaker 3: how we traveled. We had for a long time really
- 3:09Speaker 3: focused on very remote places that other people couldn't get to,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and that was, you know, best evidenced by the vehicles
- 3:17Speaker 3: that we were building.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Look, at the gladiator that we had.
- 3:20Speaker 3: If people don't know what it was, it was basically
- 3:23Speaker 3: an av gladiator with adventure trailers or at Overland Summit
- 3:27Speaker 3: camp around the back. And that was awesome because we
- 3:30Speaker 3: were able to get really really remote.
- 3:32Speaker 1: As remote as you wanted to.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, if you could get something, I don't
- 3:36Speaker 3: think that there would be many vehicles more capable than
- 3:40Speaker 3: that that you could still kind of sleep inside of.
- 3:42Speaker 2: But we started to kind of hit our limits with that.
- 3:45Speaker 3: You know, we obviously we're doting greyhound parents, and Laura
- 3:51Speaker 3: and I are not small people.
- 3:52Speaker 2: On six', two, she's you, know just under six.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Foot our dog is eighty pounds and, big and that
- 3:59Speaker 3: was a lot to ask from that small of a
- 4:02Speaker 3: space to try and have some kind.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Of temperature regulation or.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Whatever, so you, know we always knew that we wanted
- 4:09Speaker 3: some kind of expedition, vehicle and the Earth romer for
- 4:13Speaker 3: us just made so much sense because we knew from
- 4:16Speaker 3: the summit camper that we wanted something that was hard.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Sighted and how you, know to go back to how
- 4:22Speaker 3: it changed our travels is that we were less interested
- 4:27Speaker 3: in the very remote technical trails because we actually ended
- 4:31Speaker 3: up finding that those had become very well.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Used there's a lot.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Of, it and you've done a lot of, them and
- 4:36Speaker 3: we've done, them and we've done them, two, three four
- 4:38Speaker 3: or five. Times, sure so it kind of lost its,
- 4:40Speaker 3: appeal you. Know eventually it just kind of felt. Repetitive
- 4:44Speaker 3: so we kind of. Shifted, well, actually you, know the
- 4:47Speaker 3: big thing that we noticed was that by going for
- 4:49Speaker 3: maybe like easier, spots because obviously an earth roamer or
- 4:54Speaker 3: an expedition vehicle does not have the same technical terrain
- 4:58Speaker 3: capability as a light, truck although they're pretty. Good you,
- 5:01Speaker 3: know we started doing a lot more national, forests and
- 5:04Speaker 3: we started slowing down a.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Little bit more and you have to slow, down, yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Yeah you have.
- 5:08Speaker 3: To and it became more about the experience of camping
- 5:12Speaker 3: and if you were in a place.
- 5:13Speaker 1: That didn't have an amazing, view.
- 5:16Speaker 3: You didn't have to do the rocky trail that went
- 5:18Speaker 3: to the promontory point with the amazing.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Lookout.
- 5:22Speaker 3: One we realized that that's what everybody else was doing
- 5:24Speaker 3: with this whole explosion in, overlanding and we're spending a
- 5:27Speaker 3: lot more time in national forests and national. Parks you,
- 5:30Speaker 3: know sometimes we use it just like it was AN,
- 5:33Speaker 3: rv AND i think that's really where WHERE i see
- 5:37Speaker 3: the expedition vehicle space growing as it is this amalgamation
- 5:41Speaker 3: of overlanding as maybe it's perceived in THE us the
- 5:46Speaker 3: forerunner with the roof tent or the truck camp or
- 5:49Speaker 3: something mixed with a bit of THE rv, world because
- 5:52Speaker 3: you kind of have to have solutions and problems from.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Both we love, it, like we just absolutely love. It,
- 5:59Speaker 1: yeah and you get out in it a, Lot you
- 6:01Speaker 1: use it a. Lot in, fact there's been many Times
- 6:03Speaker 1: i've come over to your house and we hung out
- 6:05Speaker 1: in the Earth roamer in your. Garage it's it's like
- 6:07Speaker 1: a cool little. Spot. One it's amazing to have a
- 6:09Speaker 1: garage that your Earth roamer fits inside. Of. Two it
- 6:13Speaker 1: serves this multipurpose of it's My you, know everybody wants
- 6:16Speaker 1: you were you. Retired you're like a retired person at,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Thirty like you bought the retired person's house that has
- 6:21Speaker 1: like the room for the class a over home and it's.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Perfect it's like.
- 6:24Speaker 3: It all, works you. Know to touch on. That by
- 6:28Speaker 3: basing ourselves In, prescott it allowed us to do. This,
- 6:31Speaker 3: yeah we were if our business was based In Southern,
- 6:34Speaker 3: california like like so many uh you, know businesses are
- 6:39Speaker 3: our house would be four times the. Cost that's where
- 6:42Speaker 3: the money for the Earth roamer came. From you, know
- 6:45Speaker 3: we really look at the Earth roamer as our. Cabin,
- 6:47Speaker 3: yeah you, know we go out with family in, it
- 6:49Speaker 3: we go out with friends in.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It you get to go To greyhound events in.
- 6:52Speaker 2: It, yeah it's, awesome like you, know you get to
- 6:55Speaker 2: be the star of the.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Show, yeah it's you, know and it's also really nice
- 6:58Speaker 3: for traveling with with. Dog ours is you, know four door,
- 7:02Speaker 3: Lts so it's lts just means stretch. Essentially so, again
- 7:09Speaker 3: we're able to go out with our friends that have
- 7:11Speaker 3: toy haulers or travel trailers and we're as much a
- 7:16Speaker 3: part of that group as we are able to go
- 7:18Speaker 3: out with friends and roof tents or truck. Camper, sure you,
- 7:21Speaker 3: know we can kind of go either way with, it
- 7:23Speaker 3: and we did that recently within the last couple. Months
- 7:25Speaker 3: we did that trip To Alamo lake AND i was
- 7:29Speaker 3: towing A patriot camper kind of raptor r and we
- 7:33Speaker 3: took a backcountry route to get, there and you went
- 7:36Speaker 3: every single place that we.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Went it was fun.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And that was my experience With maybe let's back up
- 7:41Speaker 1: for a, minute AND i think it would be good
- 7:44Speaker 1: for the audience for us to define what we mean
- 7:47Speaker 1: by an expedition, vehicle which a lot of times that
- 7:50Speaker 1: term is interchangeable with expedition. Camper maybe you can kind
- 7:54Speaker 1: of share what you believe is like what defines an
- 7:57Speaker 1: expedition vehicle as opposed to overland.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Truck, bluntly it's more you could think of it as
- 8:03Speaker 3: AN rv that, is you, know capable of extended off road.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Travel you, know A CLASS c motor home might be
- 8:11Speaker 3: able to go down the dirt road a little bit
- 8:13Speaker 3: in court site to find you, know the. Campsite it's
- 8:16Speaker 3: not something that you're going to want to do with
- 8:18Speaker 3: that vehicle because long term it will compromise the.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Vehicle. Right so there's and all the systems that you
- 8:25Speaker 1: have on expedition campers are much more robust and bigger capacity,
- 8:30Speaker 1: batteries more water on.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Board, yeah so there's, essentially you, know there's self contained
- 8:35Speaker 3: vehicles THAT i think one of the biggest qualifications is live.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Inside they don't have to be hard. Sided you, Know
- 8:42Speaker 3: earth cruisers some of The Ross monster, stuff which is
- 8:46Speaker 3: awesome and are. Definitely expedition vehicles are pop. Tops you,
- 8:50Speaker 3: know they often have a, bathroom a, shower some cooking facilities.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Inside The nimble vehicles are pop Top nimble vehicles or pop. Tops,
- 8:59Speaker 3: yes you, know so it is, this AS i said,
- 9:01Speaker 3: earlier kind of this amalgamation OF i, mean it's basically
- 9:04Speaker 3: just an off ROAD rv when when you really really
- 9:07Speaker 3: get down to, it that's the best way to describe.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It, yeah off road recreational. Vehicle that makes.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Sense there's also an element AND i guess you, know
- 9:14Speaker 3: you go from boats to, yachts and part of that
- 9:16Speaker 3: jump is the, quality you, know the, quality the, components
- 9:20Speaker 3: the longevity of. It you DEFINITELY i think that that's
- 9:24Speaker 3: part of an expedition.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Vehicle, yeah and it's not a yacht unless it's got
- 9:27Speaker 1: a bathroom and a. Galley and it's the same thing
- 9:30Speaker 1: with these. Vehicles once you go to kind of an
- 9:32Speaker 1: expedition camp or expedition, vehicle it's going to have a
- 9:36Speaker 1: fully integrated, kitchen it's going to have a fully integrated.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Bath so like an expedition camper for me is like
- 9:40Speaker 3: the At overland a. Terra, sure it's not that it
- 9:43Speaker 3: doesn't fulfill the same role as an expedition. Vehicle but you,
- 9:48Speaker 3: know like they have some bathroom, facilities BUT i think
- 9:51Speaker 3: they use like a wrap on. Style, yeah you, know
- 9:54Speaker 3: one of those toilets and you know there'll be a.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Shower maybe there's not a shower.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Room you.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Know and it's not to disparage, it it's just but you,
- 10:00Speaker 3: know there's a difference between the, two both in, functionality
- 10:03Speaker 3: BUT i guess at the end of the day also in.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Cost and you, know it is different than a truck,
- 10:08Speaker 3: camper a truck camper on the back of AN aav,
- 10:11Speaker 3: whatever like that's a great, solution but it's not really
- 10:14Speaker 3: an expedition. Vehicle LIKE i think we're. Talking another defining
- 10:17Speaker 3: characteristic of an expedition vehicle is something that it's an integrated.
- 10:22Speaker 3: SYSTEM i, MEAN i always call them integrated. Vehicles and
- 10:25Speaker 3: that's not a removable camper rip that was always the
- 10:27Speaker 3: expedition portal forum heading was integrated overland vehicles or integrated
- 10:31Speaker 3: exhibition vehicles or.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Something they're kind of all in.
- 10:34Speaker 3: One now that does have its downsides that you, know
- 10:37Speaker 3: Eventually i'll have enough miles on the chassis that you,
- 10:41Speaker 3: KNOW i can't take my the, camper which is really
- 10:44Speaker 3: then the value and put it on another. Truck that's
- 10:47Speaker 3: the argument for like the A.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Terra, sure for, example it can be removed and now
- 10:52Speaker 1: you got a flatbed pickup that you can use for other.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Things yeah for.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah you, know the thing THAT i do recognize with
- 10:58Speaker 3: a lot of these vehicles is particularly when you get
- 11:01Speaker 3: to like The unicats and you know some of The
- 11:04Speaker 3: Action mobiles and The Bliss. Mobiles you know they're on truck.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Chassis those things are measured in a, lifespan often in the. Millions,
- 11:13Speaker 3: yeah even with THE f five point, fifty that is
- 11:15Speaker 3: the basis of my, vehicle you, know well. Maintained that
- 11:19Speaker 3: is a half a million mile truck if you want.
- 11:21Speaker 3: It you, KNOW i like it because it's A at
- 11:24Speaker 3: the end of the, day it's A ford, truck and
- 11:25Speaker 3: you can.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Go into Any ford dealership here in THE. Us, YEAH i,
- 11:28Speaker 1: mean you know. SERVICE i had an interesting.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Experience the Earth roamer uses engine coolant to heat the
- 11:34Speaker 3: hot water tank that's in the back of the, vehicle
- 11:37Speaker 3: and there's coolant lines that run down the. Frame two
- 11:39Speaker 3: hours after buying, mine not really being familiar with the,
- 11:42Speaker 3: truck one of those burst happened going through The Eisenhower,
- 11:45Speaker 3: tunnel so it just cooked them. Otor vehicle made it
- 11:48Speaker 3: home after we realized what was going on at the
- 11:50Speaker 3: bottom of the. Hill you, know there's no alarms that went.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Off the coolant didn't even overheat because it was at
- 11:56Speaker 3: night and twenty degrees or. Whatever BUT i was able
- 11:58Speaker 3: to take it to The ford dealer and press. It
- 12:00Speaker 3: they put a new motor in. It, yes it was,
- 12:02Speaker 3: expensive did a lot of upgrades and it was about
- 12:05Speaker 3: ten percent of WHAT i paid for the, vehicle but
- 12:07Speaker 3: it was able to be. Done, yeah you, know so
- 12:09Speaker 3: you can kind of look at these things as if
- 12:12Speaker 3: you're servicing them. Properly who knows really what the lifespan
- 12:16Speaker 3: of the machine. Is you're not daily driving it as,
- 12:18Speaker 3: well you, know with an exhibsion. Camper maybe you're using
- 12:21Speaker 3: it as you're daily driving. Pickup, well then you're putting you,
- 12:25Speaker 3: know wear and tear on all this expensive, stuff and
- 12:27Speaker 3: it accelerates the wear of the, thing which necessitates the
- 12:30Speaker 3: fact that it has to get swapped.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Out, obviously there's different budgets and different. Realities THAT'S i
- 12:35Speaker 1: like that definition, Though is it's an off ROAD. Rv,
- 12:39Speaker 1: yeah that is fully integrated with the, chassis and it's
- 12:43Speaker 1: designed for prolonged remote.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Travel, yeah LIKE i can, do you, Know El camino
- 12:48Speaker 3: Del diablo every day of the.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Week absolutely an expedition.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Vehicle could you take a Rental CLASS c motor home down?
- 12:56Speaker 2: IT i mean Maybe.
- 12:57Speaker 1: I've done that. Road there's not for very. Far you're
- 12:59Speaker 1: Not you're not gonna want to own that thing at the. End,
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah and it actually. Is it's a fairly challenging. Travel
- 13:05Speaker 1: one of not the very last time THAT i did,
- 13:07Speaker 1: it but the time. Before mike mcmaud was with, us
- 13:10Speaker 1: And Dave northstrom was with, us and some other folks
- 13:13Speaker 1: that had Earth, romers and some of them had sprinter
- 13:16Speaker 1: vans and other different. Vehicles but we got the Earth
- 13:19Speaker 1: romers through all of it no. Problem and actually even
- 13:23Speaker 1: BEFORE i started the, MAGAZINE i worked with Earth romer
- 13:26Speaker 1: AND i led a lot of their, trips AND i
- 13:29Speaker 1: did a dozen, adventures including Down baja and everything else
- 13:33Speaker 1: with Earth, romers AND i was consistently shocked at where
- 13:37Speaker 1: they could. Go the limitation really with these expedition vehicles
- 13:41Speaker 1: is the. Height when you get into forested, areas you
- 13:45Speaker 1: really got to make sure you're on major forest, roads
- 13:48Speaker 1: so you're going to be looking at a road that's
- 13:50Speaker 1: like two digits as opposed to four. Digits like if
- 13:54Speaker 1: you SEE fr seventy, two you're probably golden in your expedition.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Vehicle if you're going DOWN fr three, six seven nine or.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Whatever b you, know the more numbers that you, GOT
- 14:05Speaker 1: i do actually know. That, Yeah so that's a really you.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Learn it's a quick.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Tip so in that, regard we do a lot of you,
- 14:12Speaker 3: know three digit for service. ROADS i like to think
- 14:16Speaker 3: that with one of these vehicles you, are you can
- 14:19Speaker 3: go pretty, fast particularly with The. Roamer it's got a
- 14:22Speaker 3: four link in the back air suspension all way around
- 14:25Speaker 3: with king, shocks it's pretty. Capable your pots of pans
- 14:28Speaker 3: are still, rattling you, know you're it's got a pass.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Through you can hear, everything everything that you are carrying.
- 14:35Speaker 3: With you have to also put that in, Mind like you,
- 14:38Speaker 3: KNOW i always, say like you see these vans that
- 14:40Speaker 3: have all these desert racing lights on the on the,
- 14:43Speaker 3: top And i'm, Like, okay that's, cool but your thing
- 14:45Speaker 3: can go twenty five mile an hour off road lest
- 14:47Speaker 3: you get hit in the back.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Of the head by a.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Pan that's right.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Exactly you, know like there's there are inherent limits of
- 14:53Speaker 3: taking a small house down a four wheel drive, trail you.
- 14:58Speaker 3: KNOW i MEAN i Think Bill swale's who founded Earth,
- 15:00Speaker 3: romer you, know an unfortunately passed a little bit, ago
- 15:03Speaker 3: said that he had to design a house that was
- 15:06Speaker 3: capable of withithstanding constant.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Earthquakes, yeah so all of your systems have to be very.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Robust, SURE i have the bias towards the Earth romer
- 15:16Speaker 3: because it's WHAT i, Know but there's a lot of
- 15:18Speaker 3: options out there, well.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And it might be, Good it might be good to
- 15:21Speaker 1: kind of talk through first of, all before we go
- 15:23Speaker 1: into the individual. Models is you brought up a good
- 15:28Speaker 1: point earlier before we started talking of serialized expedition vehicles
- 15:33Speaker 1: and customized expedition, Vehicles AND i think that that is
- 15:36Speaker 1: a really important foundational discussion. Point is so an example
- 15:41Speaker 1: of a serialized expedition vehicle is the Earth. Roamer, yes
- 15:45Speaker 1: it is the Earth. Cruiser it is an adventure truck FROM. Gxv,
- 15:50Speaker 1: yes it would be like some of the more Recent adrenaline.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Campers and there's, more we're not trying to exclude anybody with.
- 15:58Speaker 1: That we could spend the entire.
- 16:00Speaker 3: And there's, podcasts buses and minuses to. Both by having
- 16:03Speaker 3: a consistent layout that maybe has a few available changes
- 16:07Speaker 3: for dynet versus, couch couch versus, whatever you got to
- 16:11Speaker 3: think about the wiring harness that goes into, These, LIKE
- 16:13Speaker 3: i think.
- 16:13Speaker 1: A lot of standardize.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Them, YEAH i think a lot of the problems THAT
- 16:17Speaker 3: i see with some of these expedition vehicles when they're
- 16:20Speaker 3: custom or they're a new. Business it's like kind of
- 16:23Speaker 3: looking up the, skirts looking at the electrical. SYSTEMS i
- 16:27Speaker 3: can display the electrical system in The Earth roamer to
- 16:31Speaker 3: an electrical engineer and they're, like, wow that's really. NICE
- 16:37Speaker 3: i won't name, names but you know there's some out
- 16:39Speaker 3: there That i've seen Where i'm, like, Wow like you've
- 16:41Speaker 3: got like twelve positive wires crossed over each, other and
- 16:45Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Rattles and moves and, wears And i'm.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Like when you're asking for all of these these custom
- 16:52Speaker 3: modifications and you want the camper with the rooftop party
- 16:56Speaker 3: deck and the twelve other weird custom things that you,
- 17:00Speaker 3: want that all comes as a compromise and it can't
- 17:02Speaker 3: be engineered as a.
- 17:04Speaker 2: System you.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Know it's like comparing a hot rod to A gt
- 17:08Speaker 3: five hundred that comes off the line For. Ford sure
- 17:10Speaker 3: one is engineered and consistent and has components and if
- 17:14Speaker 3: there's a failure they can then fix that on the
- 17:17Speaker 3: line and make those. Changes where you, know with hot,
- 17:21Speaker 3: rods you have the guy down the street that builds
- 17:24Speaker 3: hot rods and you Have Demo speed that builds hot
- 17:27Speaker 3: rods that is really really good and it's a. Craft
- 17:31Speaker 3: so that's the thing that you get a big. Range
- 17:33Speaker 3: you have to really understand that there's. Differences there are
- 17:36Speaker 3: the things THAT i would like differently in my, layout for,
- 17:39Speaker 3: Sure BUT i also know THAT i can call somebody
- 17:42Speaker 3: and SAY i HAVE er one oh, seven what is
- 17:46Speaker 3: the heater in my truck and there's actually, like, okay,
- 17:48Speaker 3: cool we'll send me the parts for.
- 17:50Speaker 1: That or you have something that stops working and you
- 17:53Speaker 1: get Earth romer on the phone and you tell me
- 17:55Speaker 1: HAVE er one oh, seven and he's going to, Say,
- 17:57Speaker 1: okay you're going to open up the bath room. Cabinet
- 18:00Speaker 1: there's going to be four screws they're going to hold
- 18:02Speaker 1: this panel in. Place you're going to take those four screws. Out,
- 18:04Speaker 1: Okay you're going to see the yellow and the green
- 18:06Speaker 1: and the blue. Wire, okay you cut the. Blue, Yeah
- 18:12Speaker 1: but there's a huge advantage to that because it because
- 18:15Speaker 1: it is. Serialized and it's the same thing With earth.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Cruisers WHEN i borrowed An Earth, CRUISER i had a
- 18:20Speaker 1: minor issue AND i was able to call them up
- 18:22Speaker 1: and they're, like no. Problem they knew exactly where the relay,
- 18:27Speaker 1: was they knew exactly where the switch. Was they and
- 18:30Speaker 1: they were able to provide us with immediate. Support the
- 18:34Speaker 1: upside of the custom stuff is you get exactly what
- 18:37Speaker 1: you think you. Want BUT i want to talk about
- 18:39Speaker 1: that for a, second BECAUSE i think the problem is
- 18:41Speaker 1: is that people who buy custom expedition vehicles they have
- 18:46Speaker 1: never owned one. Before in most, cases they have rarely
- 18:49Speaker 1: had like a sphere of, experience so they had kind
- 18:52Speaker 1: of have it in their mind That, okay we want,
- 18:54Speaker 1: that we want this alley or this galley, style and
- 18:57Speaker 1: we want this giant, bathroom and we want this, one
- 18:59Speaker 1: we want that and everything, else and then they end
- 19:01Speaker 1: up with this very unlivable space because it's got so
- 19:05Speaker 1: much stuff packed into, it and it comes because they
- 19:07Speaker 1: lack that experience or they want to integrate all of
- 19:10Speaker 1: this fancy new technology that hasn't been proven, yet and
- 19:14Speaker 1: they're going to say, yes this custom expedition vehicle companies
- 19:17Speaker 1: going mind, like, yep it's like one point two million,
- 19:19Speaker 1: bucks here's your. Camper the reality is is that the
- 19:22Speaker 1: closer you can get to just like in think of
- 19:24Speaker 1: a land, cruiser they make millions of, them and they
- 19:27Speaker 1: make them very. Well the closer that you can get
- 19:29Speaker 1: to serialized, production the more reliable it will, be the
- 19:34Speaker 1: better serviceability you'll, have the better chance you'll be able
- 19:37Speaker 1: to get it fixed in the. Field if you've got
- 19:38Speaker 1: to fly in a technician From Earth roamer or From Earth,
- 19:42Speaker 1: cruiser they're going to know what to, bring they're going
- 19:44Speaker 1: to know how to fix, it and your downtime is
- 19:46Speaker 1: going to be. Limited whereas the number of catastrophic failures
- 19:50Speaker 1: That i've seen with custom expedition vehicles like frames and
- 19:54Speaker 1: these bodies breaking body mounts you're.
- 19:57Speaker 3: DOING i, mean even at everything's a wonder, level everything's
- 20:00Speaker 3: a one, off there's no. Repetition it's it's silly to
- 20:05Speaker 3: not you, know Like lance that owns and Runs Earth
- 20:08Speaker 3: cruiser in THE. Us he is a smart guy but
- 20:11Speaker 3: also one of the most well traveled people I've i've
- 20:14Speaker 3: met in the.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Industry, yeah for.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Sure he puts he puts His Earth cruiser on a
- 20:18Speaker 3: boat and he's gone for. YE i mean he's just
- 20:21Speaker 3: he's gone for a. While but it's that experience that
- 20:25Speaker 3: then gets integrated into the vehicles that makes them so.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Good LIKE i want to make SURE i Give Earth
- 20:30Speaker 3: cruisers some love because WHILE i, love, love love My Earth,
- 20:35Speaker 3: rummer IF i was to undertake serious travel LIKE i
- 20:39Speaker 3: was GONNA i don't know When i'm coming, back And
- 20:42Speaker 3: i'm going to drive around the, WORLD i would do
- 20:43Speaker 3: it in An Earth.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Cruiser, yeah put it in a. Container, yeah they fit in.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Containers even if you don't get THE fx THAT i
- 20:49Speaker 3: don't know if those. CAN i think you can put
- 20:51Speaker 3: different wheels on. Them THE fx has a solid, side
- 20:54Speaker 3: WHICH i think is really. Cool and if, not, yeah
- 20:58Speaker 3: they're the right, size a little less intimidating in the,
- 21:02Speaker 3: vehicle like when you see An Earth, roamer LIKE i have,
- 21:05Speaker 3: to you, know figure an extra ten minutes to get
- 21:07Speaker 3: gas If i'm in.
- 21:09Speaker 1: A, rush because it's all these people that.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Come over and first question how much that thing, Costs
- 21:13Speaker 3: And i'm, like, OH i don't want to answer IT
- 21:15Speaker 3: i don't want to answer. It with the Earth, cruisers
- 21:17Speaker 3: they're a little bit more low. Key they fit in
- 21:19Speaker 3: a regular parking, spot they. Do The Earth roamers can
- 21:23Speaker 3: fit in a parking spot if you have a room
- 21:26Speaker 3: to back, up and they're pretty maneuverable with the high
- 21:29Speaker 3: steer axle that the wide track axle or whatever it's.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Called but The Earth cruisers are this, fantastic you, know well, proven.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And they don't look even though they are not, inexpensive
- 21:40Speaker 1: they do not. Look they look like a kind of
- 21:42Speaker 1: a bread delivery. Van but you either love or. Hate
- 21:45Speaker 1: BUT i think it's an advantage while you're. Traveling, YES
- 21:47Speaker 1: i think it's an advantage to be in this, white
- 21:50Speaker 1: nondescript looks like a delivery, vehicle and in, fact in
- 21:53Speaker 1: most countries a fuso is the delivery. Vehicle so if
- 21:57Speaker 1: you think about the, roads the parking, spaces the turns
- 22:01Speaker 1: like they've got to move goods and services around all
- 22:03Speaker 1: these small towns and that's what they use is vehicles that.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Size, yeah you, know there's all these different you, know
- 22:09Speaker 3: layers of the onion.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Text and the fact that it's cab over so you.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Up but you either like or you, don't LIKE i
- 22:14Speaker 1: have to, say, like, well the ride quality goes, down
- 22:17Speaker 1: but then maneuverability goes way. Up, yes so there's like
- 22:20Speaker 1: everything gets a cop. Compromise.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Yeah so, Yeah like, Personally i'm not a big cab over,
- 22:25Speaker 3: guy you, know so that L mt. Vs the man
- 22:28Speaker 3: trucks like things like. UMGS i just like driving a pickup. Truck,
- 22:32Speaker 3: sure it's it's it's what you drive every. Day it's
- 22:35Speaker 3: very natural for. Me my exhibition vehicle is no wider
- 22:39Speaker 3: than A. Duly in, fact it's actually narrower than a Modern,
- 22:42Speaker 3: duly so probably, marginally, yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah not that. Much but it is a couple just
- 22:47Speaker 2: on either?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Way eight point eight foot six inches? Wide is? It
- 22:50Speaker 1: how wide your? Is? Yeah pretty.
- 22:53Speaker 3: WIDE i just know that how much from the, cab
- 22:56Speaker 3: how much it sticks? OUT i know that you, know
- 22:59Speaker 3: A duly sticks out. More, yeah, sure because that has
- 23:02Speaker 3: this single rear wheel. Conversion you, know there's there's a
- 23:05Speaker 3: lot of things that go into, it and then you,
- 23:07Speaker 3: KNOW i think one of the things we need to
- 23:08Speaker 3: talk about for the essentials is the consequences of taking
- 23:13Speaker 3: a very heavy, vehicle very remote with a lot of
- 23:16Speaker 3: systems become a lot. Higher you, KNOW i would, never for,
- 23:20Speaker 3: example carry a starter in my Old gladiator in my
- 23:23Speaker 3: jeep because if it broke, down my buddy can throw
- 23:26Speaker 3: a strap on the front and we can tow it
- 23:28Speaker 3: somewhere to where a tow truck can get it to or.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Whatever the thing that we learned really quickly when we
- 23:34Speaker 3: had this this major problem with our truck right after getting,
- 23:39Speaker 3: it was oh, Crap, like if this thing breaks down
- 23:41Speaker 3: on the side of the, road it requires like like
- 23:44Speaker 3: the same you know wrecker to come get you that
- 23:47Speaker 3: would get a semi. Truck, now if you're on the,
- 23:50Speaker 3: highway those things are all. Over if you're down for
- 23:53Speaker 3: a forest road with four letters on, it you if
- 23:57Speaker 3: it's something that you're not capable of, fixing you are
- 24:00Speaker 3: bringing somebody. In so we for, example every electronic sensor
- 24:05Speaker 3: that's on the engine that could create a no start
- 24:08Speaker 3: or no run, condition we carry. Those it was just
- 24:12Speaker 3: it was like eight hundred bucks and. Sensors but IF
- 24:14Speaker 3: i don't have them AND i need, them what is
- 24:17Speaker 3: that going to cost? Me sure we carry a, starter you,
- 24:20Speaker 3: know we CARRY i continue to run THE dpf system on.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Mine you, KNOW i always, say, like IF i have
- 24:27Speaker 3: the luxury of owning an earth room WHERE i can
- 24:29Speaker 3: afford to fix and service THE dpf BECAUSE i like
- 24:32Speaker 3: enjoying nature AND i don't want. To, yeah we never
- 24:35Speaker 3: want to reute unnecessarily also illegal to take that, off
- 24:38Speaker 3: but some people.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Will we just are traveling, international you could take it.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Off we decided we carry THE i think it's like
- 24:45Speaker 3: the temperature sensors or something that are known to. Fail
- 24:48Speaker 3: while they were like twenty, BUCKS i have like five of,
- 24:51Speaker 3: them you, know carrying with. You some of those components
- 24:54Speaker 3: generally related to the, chassis like if you run out
- 24:57Speaker 3: of heat or YOUR ac stops working or something that's not,
- 25:02Speaker 3: catastrophic so you have to plan for. Those i'm going
- 25:05Speaker 3: to call them catastrophic, events like obviously if the engine goes,
- 25:10Speaker 3: poof there's really nothing that you can.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Do sure.
- 25:12Speaker 3: That but with most modern, vehicles the core of them
- 25:15Speaker 3: are pretty. Reliable like they've made millions Of ford sixty seven.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Engines sure we know exactly what the problems are and
- 25:23Speaker 3: what The.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And you bulletproofed, yours AS i, remember did a version of.
- 25:26Speaker 3: THAT i have some parts from bulletproof on, there so
- 25:29Speaker 3: LIKE i did the BULLETPROOF egr it's not really needed
- 25:32Speaker 3: on the six, seven to be. Honest that was more
- 25:34Speaker 3: of like a six to zero. Thing where as these
- 25:37Speaker 3: emission control systems were starting to come out of the,
- 25:42Speaker 3: market there was growing.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Pains for.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Sure the six to seven doesn't have many you know
- 25:47Speaker 3: that motor is still in, production but there were things
- 25:49Speaker 3: that we did for. Reliability we did different exhaust manifolds
- 25:54Speaker 3: because everything was. Out we did a different, turbo not
- 25:58Speaker 3: necessarily a performance, turbo though it does flow slightly. More
- 26:01Speaker 3: when my motor went, poof the proof took out the
- 26:05Speaker 3: it's oil, cool so you don't then know what gets
- 26:08Speaker 3: into that, turbo so you have to replace. It like
- 26:12Speaker 3: The ford turbos for the early six sevens are known
- 26:15Speaker 3: to have some, Issues board's pretty good at revising. Parts
- 26:19Speaker 3: the basics here That i'm really trying to get at
- 26:22Speaker 3: is develop a relationship with a mechanic that knows the
- 26:25Speaker 3: chassis that you have and figure out what is. Breaking
- 26:29Speaker 3: because if you have an L mtv or you have
- 26:32Speaker 3: some the man truck that you are not going to
- 26:35Speaker 3: get parts, for you know at The ford dealer down the, street.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It's probably smart to carry some of that stuff.
- 26:41Speaker 3: With Now i'm not saying carry a spare transmission because
- 26:44Speaker 3: the transmission might. Go you, know those are those are
- 26:46Speaker 3: those big things that if they, happen you're just going
- 26:49Speaker 3: to have to deal with. It, Yeah and that kind
- 26:52Speaker 3: of translates into you, know if you have the, parts
- 26:55Speaker 3: you have to you, know you have to have some
- 26:57Speaker 3: skill to be able to replace. Them it doesn't mean
- 27:00Speaker 3: that you have to do it. Quick it just means
- 27:02Speaker 3: that you have to get the job done so you
- 27:03Speaker 3: can get.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Out.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Sure so toolkits are going to be different for an
- 27:08Speaker 3: expedition vehicle versus a. Jeep you, know you have large suspension,
- 27:12Speaker 3: Components LIKE i carry a socket for the four link
- 27:17Speaker 3: that is A kilderman system on my. Vehicle, WELL i
- 27:21Speaker 3: carry the correct sockets and wrenches to be able to service.
- 27:26Speaker 3: That not That i'm expecting necessarily that a bushing is
- 27:30Speaker 3: going to fail or this or, that because, again those
- 27:32Speaker 3: are things that you drive slowly to a point that
- 27:35Speaker 3: you can get further help because you're not jacking this
- 27:38Speaker 3: thing up and doing that in the middle of. Nowhere
- 27:41Speaker 3: a bolt might come loose that you need to tighten
- 27:43Speaker 3: and you can fix that before it becomes a. Problem
- 27:46Speaker 3: so you have to consider both for the, coach you,
- 27:50Speaker 3: know the camper, portion the live in, portion and then the.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Vehicle what tools you're going to need to service on modern,
- 27:58Speaker 3: vehicles you, know there's you KNOW obed scanners LIKE i carry.
- 28:02Speaker 3: IT i think it's LIKE Obd link two AND i
- 28:05Speaker 3: have this app called four scan and it allows me
- 28:08Speaker 3: to have some terrible, NAME i, know it allows me
- 28:12Speaker 3: to have some basic functionality that you, know the four
- 28:16Speaker 3: diagnostics would have more than AN obd two, reader less
- 28:21Speaker 3: than the computer That ford, has you, know things like
- 28:24Speaker 3: forcing a region of the diesel particular film for. SURE
- 28:28Speaker 3: i want to be able to do that.
- 28:30Speaker 1: So you can regen it when you want, to not
- 28:32Speaker 1: when you're climbing some big hill or.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Whatever, yeah and there's some tuners that give you that.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Functionality LIKE i have a bank's gauge in, mind AND
- 28:40Speaker 3: i think that's the best thing THAT i could recommend
- 28:43Speaker 3: to any of these trucks because they're they're going to
- 28:46Speaker 3: be running towards the higher end of their gross vehicle weight.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Grading, yeah you're Earth rummer weighs nineteen thousand.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Pounds, YEAH i mean it depends on what is in.
- 28:56Speaker 3: There mine has one hundred and seventeen gallons of fresh. Water,
- 28:59Speaker 3: yeah that's a, lot you, know that's half a ton of.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Water but you also did a good job recently of
- 29:06Speaker 1: you had this extra storage box on the back and
- 29:08Speaker 1: a bunch of extra, things and you pulled all that.
- 29:11Speaker 2: OFF i pulled all that.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Off you have saved hundreds of. Pounds hundreds of.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Pounds AND i also went through and kind of optimized
- 29:18Speaker 3: that spares package for me after having the the traumatic
- 29:22Speaker 3: event with the engine right after getting, IT i carried
- 29:25Speaker 3: a lot of things THAT i didn't, need pairs some
- 29:28Speaker 3: of that back based on, experience like IF i and
- 29:30Speaker 3: ALSO i kind of make my make things modular, now
- 29:34Speaker 3: Like i've found that These pelican fifteen fifty, Cases yes
- 29:38Speaker 3: they're a little bit, heavier but they they fit in
- 29:41Speaker 3: the space really well. Perfect SO i have one that
- 29:44Speaker 3: is like you know That i'm building that is my
- 29:46Speaker 3: big trip. Kit like If i'm driving to The Arctic ocean,
- 29:50Speaker 3: again there's things THAT i would take with me that
- 29:52Speaker 3: would be, DIFFERENT i. Think or maybe you're going down
- 29:54Speaker 3: To baja Or, yeah Or baha or a place where
- 29:57Speaker 3: you know serviceability is going to be more of a.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Challenge you, know don't be afraid to kind of segment your. Kit,
- 30:03Speaker 3: sure you, KNOW i always carry a belt because that's
- 30:05Speaker 3: a no start condition on my.
- 30:07Speaker 1: TRUCK i carry A i do carry a fuel.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Pump not that they're necessarily known for going, out but
- 30:13Speaker 3: if they, do the truck's dead in the, water AND
- 30:15Speaker 3: i have decided to allocate the space for.
- 30:17Speaker 2: That sure to kind of wrap it.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Up carry the tools that you need to service your,
- 30:23Speaker 3: vehicle likely the, bolt the size of the bolt that
- 30:26Speaker 3: holds your control arm on for a jeep and the
- 30:29Speaker 3: one that is on a medium or heavy duty truck.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Chassis they're going to be different. Sizes try and work
- 30:35Speaker 3: with that kit when you're at home so you have
- 30:37Speaker 3: that process of.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Elimination and a special thanks to ON x Off road
- 30:45Speaker 1: for helping to support this week's. Podcast going further on
- 30:49Speaker 1: your adventures is about having the right. Tools the ON
- 30:52Speaker 1: x Off road Apps intuitive maps make it easy to
- 30:55Speaker 1: find trails and disperse, camping and their offline maps give
- 30:59Speaker 1: you FULL gps navigation capability without cell. Coverage i'm also
- 31:05Speaker 1: really excited about their new route builder for planning and
- 31:08Speaker 1: sharing custom. Trips it's got a snap to trail tool
- 31:12Speaker 1: where you can just drop points where you want to,
- 31:14Speaker 1: go and a route automatically connects to the closest road or.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Trail you could, build save and ad routes to folders
- 31:22Speaker 1: and share your entire trip with your. Buddies you can
- 31:25Speaker 1: find out more information on on xmaps dot. Com you
- 31:29Speaker 1: can also find their apps in The Apple store or
- 31:32Speaker 1: whatever other device that you. Use thanks again on X
- 31:37Speaker 1: i remember there was early on an. Earthromer they had
- 31:40Speaker 1: a CLIENT i won't name, names but he was very
- 31:42Speaker 1: Wealthy australian that drove an earthrower around the. World he
- 31:47Speaker 1: was In mongolia when there was a problem with the,
- 31:50Speaker 1: ford either the engine or the turbo or something like,
- 31:52Speaker 1: that and the only way around it because there was
- 31:55Speaker 1: no way to move the vehicle safely from where it was.
- 31:58Speaker 1: At so he had a just coordinate getting a forward
- 32:02Speaker 1: technician all the, parts flying them Into, mongolia probably getting
- 32:07Speaker 1: in the land, cruiser driving to the vehicle and doing
- 32:10Speaker 1: this major repair to the forward in the middle Of.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Mongolia so that would not have been.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Cheap but you do have to consider that if you
- 32:18Speaker 3: are going to be taking one of these vehicles to
- 32:20Speaker 3: very remote, places that that is a, possibility you. Know
- 32:23Speaker 3: that's why going with let's maybe transition from this to
- 32:28Speaker 3: there's a lot OF diy. Guys, yeah so let's talk
- 32:31Speaker 3: about you, know let's use the as an. Example THERE'S i,
- 32:34Speaker 3: mean there's so many. Chassis there's THE, lmtv there's the Man.
- 32:37Speaker 3: CHASS i, mean there's there's a lot out. There and
- 32:39Speaker 3: you primarily see this With european travelers because, there's for whatever,
- 32:44Speaker 3: reason there's just a lot of very applicable vehicles. There
- 32:48Speaker 3: and there's a much larger expedition vehicle.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Scene, yeah go To aventre and. Alread, yeah and it's, Incredible, yeah.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Exactly so look at a unicat in. Person it's just awe.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Inspiring you.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Know so let's just talk about the guy that buys
- 33:01Speaker 3: the ex military unimogue and you, know builds their own.
- 33:04Speaker 3: CAMPER i think that stuff's. Great, like those are the
- 33:06Speaker 3: people that totally see. Traveling there's a lot of that out.
- 33:10Speaker 3: There you, know there's a lot of guys that really
- 33:12Speaker 3: do use their earth roamers and their earth cruisers and
- 33:15Speaker 3: you know another and other. VEHICLES i feel bad to,
- 33:17Speaker 3: keep you, know defaulting to earth roamer and earth, cruiser
- 33:20Speaker 3: but they're just in THE.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Us they are the lion's. Share they just.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Have they've been avolunger and they have Big.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Yeah THE diy guys, there you, know they'll get their
- 33:30Speaker 3: box From Total composits or box manufacture and they really
- 33:34Speaker 3: know these vehicles because they've built, them and there's a
- 33:37Speaker 3: huge advantage to knowing the. Systems the downsize is maybe
- 33:42Speaker 3: the guy that's installing the heater or the electrical system
- 33:45Speaker 3: or whatever it is doing the best that he, can
- 33:47Speaker 3: but maybe isn't a professional electrical engineer or. Something, Right,
- 33:52Speaker 3: so if you're listening to this and it's, like, oh
- 33:55Speaker 3: An earth roamer Or earth cruiser or g X v,
- 33:58Speaker 3: adrenaline all of these things are not in the financial,
- 34:01Speaker 3: budget which is just a.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Reality there are a lot.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Of options for building your, own like quite, affordably like
- 34:07Speaker 3: you can you, know affordability is relative to this. Space
- 34:11Speaker 3: it is inherently, Expensive like there's no way of getting
- 34:14Speaker 3: around the fact that you're going to have to buy
- 34:16Speaker 3: very expensive lithium batteries and all of these.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Components but you can you can find A MITSUBC FUSO
- 34:23Speaker 1: fg let's call it ten years, old which will be
- 34:25Speaker 1: pre def pre all that. Stuff you can find those
- 34:28Speaker 1: in the thirty thousand dollars range here in The United,
- 34:30Speaker 1: states and then you basically you. Build there's Like Total
- 34:34Speaker 1: composites out of out Of canada that builds boxes very.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Affordable they're unfinished on the. Inside so now you've got
- 34:43Speaker 1: a proven global platform for thirty thousand. Bucks the box
- 34:47Speaker 1: is going to cost you less than that, unfinished but
- 34:51Speaker 1: it's ready to be bolted onto the chassis. Rails you
- 34:54Speaker 1: take the time to do it all, yourself so you
- 34:56Speaker 1: know where every wire, is you, know you, know watch
- 34:59Speaker 1: you two learn how to set these things up and
- 35:03Speaker 1: go with well proven, components put less stuff in the
- 35:05Speaker 1: truck than you think you, need and the next thing you,
- 35:07Speaker 1: know you're off doing it.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yourself, yeah it's it's very important for me to stress
- 35:13Speaker 3: that this is not just a club for guys that
- 35:16Speaker 3: are dropping half a million or a million dollars on these.
- 35:19Speaker 3: VEHICLES i think the heart and soul of the expedition
- 35:22Speaker 3: community are THE diy. Guys, YEAH i, mean like, frankly
- 35:26Speaker 3: that is WHO i see traveling internationally using these vehicles as.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Intended the most bar none and earth romer leaving THE us,
- 35:34Speaker 3: happens but generally generally it is the. Exception there are
- 35:38Speaker 3: just so many you, know honestly people my age In
- 35:41Speaker 3: europe that are building Their mogs or, whatever or they
- 35:45Speaker 3: buy a, chassis modify the. Chassis and this is like
- 35:48Speaker 3: where Bliss mobile comes. In AND i think that Bliss
- 35:50Speaker 3: mobile is really. Cool is you buy this. Box some
- 35:54Speaker 3: really dear friends of, Ours colin And, candy actually bought
- 35:58Speaker 3: Bliss mobile box and they bought a truck Through Bliss.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Mobile they live In.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Arizona they keep it In europe and they do all
- 36:05Speaker 3: these one they do all these cool Bliss.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Mobile trips with other owners and there's good.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Camaraderie but they will be able, to you, know sell
- 36:11Speaker 3: that truck, off keep their, box ship it To Bliss.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Mobile in The United states Have Spencer, park put it
- 36:18Speaker 3: on A ram or put it on one of the you,
- 36:21Speaker 3: know An asella truck or. Something and their big asset
- 36:26Speaker 3: is all pretty much self.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Contained it still has their pots and, pans it still
- 36:30Speaker 1: has the pots, exact it's got their own stuff and
- 36:32Speaker 1: there they just move the box and then you don't have.
- 36:35Speaker 1: To there's no temporary, import there's no. Carne, yeah you're
- 36:38Speaker 1: just bringing the box.
- 36:39Speaker 3: Set there's no there's no emissions regulation. Nothing that Stuff
- 36:43Speaker 3: now the thing you have to you do have to
- 36:44Speaker 3: notice that there's different. Voltages so with these, campers with
- 36:48Speaker 3: these exhibition, vehicles much like AN, rv you have shore,
- 36:52Speaker 3: power so you have a one to ten based system
- 36:55Speaker 3: like either a thirty or fifty. Amp most of these
- 36:57Speaker 3: are thirty, amps and then you're going to you, know
- 37:00Speaker 3: higher vulgue. Forty so one of the things That i'm currently,
- 37:05Speaker 3: researching LIKE i would love to ship ours To iceland
- 37:08Speaker 3: and then put it on a ferry and then do
- 37:11Speaker 3: The Scandinavian nordic. Countries how DO i charge? It now
- 37:14Speaker 3: if you're moving every, day that's not REALLY.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I think there's actually. Converters there, are but there's not
- 37:19Speaker 1: a lot of information on.
- 37:21Speaker 3: That so if anybody's actually figured out a solution for
- 37:24Speaker 3: that that's actually reliable and isn't isn'tantic? Gigantic you, know
- 37:29Speaker 3: that's interesting, Thing but you know there are these. Options
- 37:32Speaker 3: it's actually really cool that bliss mobiles in THE us
- 37:34Speaker 3: now be Superre they're very. Reputable they actually AND i
- 37:38Speaker 3: want to give a shout out to. Them they have
- 37:40Speaker 3: A i want to say it's an eight or a
- 37:41Speaker 3: ten foot box that can. Go they're partnering with av
- 37:46Speaker 3: to build trucks for this small this new small box.
- 37:49Speaker 2: SIZE i mean if.
- 37:50Speaker 3: That imagine that if that was out WHEN i when
- 37:53Speaker 3: we bought our Earth, rumer it would be really hard
- 37:56Speaker 3: to not have a brand new because, basically the newer
- 37:59Speaker 3: chain you can, get the more. Reliable, PERSONALLY i believe
- 38:03Speaker 3: that they've. Become the faster they, are the better the
- 38:06Speaker 3: Breaking they're just nicer inside.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Too a new. VEHICLE i, MEAN i think a lot
- 38:11Speaker 1: of people misunderstand that if you have a thirty year
- 38:14Speaker 1: old eighty series Land, cruiser which when it was new
- 38:17Speaker 1: was one of the most reliable vehicles ever. Made, yeah
- 38:20Speaker 1: but a thirty year old eighty series Land cruiser is
- 38:23Speaker 1: no more reliable or less reliable than a new Land.
- 38:27Speaker 1: ROVER i, mean it's just the reality having a new
- 38:29Speaker 1: car with new, belts new like all the new, systems
- 38:33Speaker 1: it's going to be more. Reliable there's things that than
- 38:35Speaker 1: an old.
- 38:36Speaker 3: Car there's a lot of things that you, know and
- 38:38Speaker 3: this is maybe again going back to the guys that
- 38:40Speaker 3: are looking at doing this from A diy, level is you,
- 38:43Speaker 3: know if you find the, unimogue THE, lmtv whatever chassis
- 38:48Speaker 3: you are choosing a lot of times these are ex
- 38:50Speaker 3: military and there's this, Idea oh, yeah well they're they're well.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Maintained sometimes, yes and sometimes you can find them with
- 38:56Speaker 3: shockingly low miles or kilometers on, them but the oil don't.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Care there's a lot of components that will rubber anything.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Rubbers it's time, related not necessarily mileage, related for, Sure
- 39:09Speaker 3: so not saying that it's not a good. Idea you
- 39:11Speaker 3: can get a lot of bang for your, buck but
- 39:12Speaker 3: you have to you then have to prepare for having
- 39:15Speaker 3: the rear main seal for an obscure unimogue engine that
- 39:19Speaker 3: in The United states we don't.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Get, yeah that's WHY i keep coming back to that MITSUBCFUSO. Fg,
- 39:25Speaker 1: yeah like ten year.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Old, yeah it's going to be pre Daff they put
- 39:28Speaker 3: no Particular they'll put a million miles on those all day,
- 39:31Speaker 3: long all day.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Long they're pretty. Good.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Yeah recovery also changes from the kind of recreational four
- 39:38Speaker 3: wheel drive side to the expedition vehicle. Side i've got
- 39:41Speaker 3: a lot Of max tricks because that's my, gig BUT
- 39:43Speaker 3: i carry eight because one of the things That i'm
- 39:46Speaker 3: most worried, ABOUT i think If i'm going to get
- 39:49Speaker 3: stuck in an expedition. Vehicle i'm probably aware that there's a, risk,
- 39:53Speaker 3: sure but the things that you don't think of are
- 39:56Speaker 3: it rains overnight you're in a field and that much.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Weight like the roads give.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Way you, know there was The unimog WHICH i think
- 40:04Speaker 3: was A gxv and big bend that you, KNOW i
- 40:07Speaker 3: had to have a helicopter come and bring it. Up
- 40:10Speaker 3: i'm not going to comment on driver error or anything,
- 40:12Speaker 3: there but in fact it is the road gave. Way
- 40:14Speaker 3: there was recently an earth roamer that was a big
- 40:17Speaker 3: recovery thing that was On.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Instagram road gave.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Way you have to you, know not only in the recovery,
- 40:22Speaker 1: scary but how you drive.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Them you have to give yourself more. Room you don't
- 40:27Speaker 3: want to put your you, know your tire on wet
- 40:30Speaker 3: soil on a shelf. Road at the very, end you
- 40:33Speaker 3: should have the training to get yourself out of some
- 40:37Speaker 3: of these, situations. Right you know a lot of these
- 40:40Speaker 3: vehicles will have front and rear. Winches they're only as
- 40:43Speaker 3: good as your, training most, likely LIKE i. Have i'm
- 40:47Speaker 3: not saying it's the largest winch That warrenant, offers BUT
- 40:49Speaker 3: i have a warn sixteen to five on the front
- 40:51Speaker 3: of my. Vehicle the chassis is rated for nineteen. Five
- 40:54Speaker 3: generally you want fifty percent, more but it's just not really,
- 40:57Speaker 3: available SO i have to pulley blocks and knowing how
- 41:02Speaker 3: to do those. Things that's WHERE i really like the
- 41:04Speaker 3: max track stuff because if you're on unstable, ground you
- 41:07Speaker 3: have something that you can winch up onto to at
- 41:10Speaker 3: least stabilize the. Situation because if the road gave way,
- 41:13Speaker 3: once there's a strong likelihood that it could give way
- 41:16Speaker 3: more and. Move you, Know so building a kit that
- 41:20Speaker 3: is appropriately sized to the weight of the vehicle and
- 41:24Speaker 3: that may that means that the great recovery gear that
- 41:28Speaker 3: you've invested in free your. Jeep it's not going to
- 41:30Speaker 3: work over.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Here it's. Not and you may want to have another
- 41:32Speaker 1: expedition vehicle with. You you may want to travel with a,
- 41:35Speaker 1: buddy which is why.
- 41:36Speaker 2: You see technical.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Stuff that's why anytime we really pushed it with the earth,
- 41:40Speaker 1: rowmers we made sure we had a couple of them,
- 41:41Speaker 1: along because you, know it doesn't matter how capable wrangler.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Is it weighs one, third like you're just, like you,
- 41:49Speaker 1: know it's just not going to pull it, out you,
- 41:51Speaker 1: know you're just going to, be you, know trying to
- 41:53Speaker 1: get an elephant to move on a. Leash it's not
- 41:55Speaker 1: going to. Work it's not Going, definitely recovery comes to,
- 41:59Speaker 1: mind and being very. CAUTIOUS i like the idea of
- 42:02Speaker 1: someone putting an e bike on the back of their
- 42:04Speaker 1: Earth romer or Earth, cruiser take your, pick having something
- 42:08Speaker 1: like that that becomes your scout. VEHICLE i have used
- 42:11Speaker 1: drones a lot with expedition vehicles Where i'm we just got, one,
- 42:15Speaker 1: yeah Where i'm flying ahead And i'm looking at the.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Terrain is this going to put me along a shelf?
- 42:19Speaker 1: Road particularly on shelf, ROADS i like to go ahead
- 42:22Speaker 1: and make sure, that, OKAY i could this is the
- 42:24Speaker 1: next PLACE i can turn, AROUND i come, BACK i
- 42:27Speaker 1: drive to that place AND i stop again AND i
- 42:29Speaker 1: confirm because and also it gives the chance to run
- 42:32Speaker 1: into people coming the other direction and just be, like
- 42:35Speaker 1: is there any way you could stop here for about
- 42:38Speaker 1: fifteen minutes UNTIL i make it to this clearing so
- 42:40Speaker 1: you can come around. Me because if you run into
- 42:44Speaker 1: if you're the one that's coming, downhill you should be
- 42:46Speaker 1: giving way to whoever's coming, back who's going? Uphill and
- 42:49Speaker 1: are you going to back An Earth roamer or An
- 42:51Speaker 1: Earth cruis or A gxv up a shelf. Road that's,
- 42:54Speaker 1: very very. Challenging SO i think having a little e
- 42:57Speaker 1: bike or having a small dirt.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Bike, yeah or bicycle or whatever that, bicycle whatever turns
- 43:02Speaker 3: on and to build on, that recognizing that the consequences
- 43:06Speaker 3: are different in the same way that you maybe need
- 43:08Speaker 3: to carry some additional spars that you wouldn't in a,
- 43:12Speaker 3: jeep your mindset cannot be the same as if you
- 43:16Speaker 3: were in a. Jeep you have to adjust your risk
- 43:19Speaker 3: level because the consequence has become much, higher much much. Quicker,
- 43:24Speaker 3: yeah simple, situation like you're, saying shelf, road somebody's coming
- 43:27Speaker 3: down the. Hill you, know you can't just kind of
- 43:29Speaker 3: pull up on the bank and let them Buy it's you,
- 43:32Speaker 3: know some of these vehicles aren't maybe as wide as people,
- 43:35Speaker 3: think you, know LIKE i know on my rown or
- 43:37Speaker 3: the mirrors are still the same with as a fourth pickup. Truck,
- 43:40Speaker 3: sure and they still stick out. Further sure there is
- 43:43Speaker 3: some mental game. There you have to consider those. Things but,
- 43:47Speaker 3: again like you, said you get you have to give
- 43:49Speaker 3: them some. Room so here now you're getting right up
- 43:51Speaker 3: to the edge of the shelf, road which could give
- 43:53Speaker 3: way because of the weight of the. VEHICLE a thousand
- 43:55Speaker 3: jeeps came through there before that, then and the road
- 43:57Speaker 3: never gave way because they didn't weigh eighteen thousand. POUNDS
- 44:00Speaker 3: i do think it requires a mindset change to SAY
- 44:03Speaker 3: i have my house with.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Me why AM i in a? Rush If i've got
- 44:06Speaker 1: my house with. Me, Yep i'm going to take my.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Time i'm going to stage, Here i'm going to verify
- 44:11Speaker 1: that the route ahead is. Safe i'm going to use
- 44:13Speaker 1: multiple communication devices and navigation tools to make good. Choices
- 44:18Speaker 1: Anytime i've ever gotten in trouble with an expedition, vehicle
- 44:21Speaker 1: it has always been Because i'm, like, oh it'll be.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Fine the one platform THAT i found to be surprisingly
- 44:27Speaker 1: nimble and really not an issue was A unicat on A.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Unimog so it was, like at like the four, sixteen
- 44:34Speaker 1: isn't that, Right like it's it's the it's kind of
- 44:37Speaker 1: the it's not the really Old. Unimog it's not the
- 44:39Speaker 1: brand new Unimo, yeah very. Boxis, yeah like late eighties
- 44:43Speaker 1: early Nineties. Unimog and it had a fairly Small unicat
- 44:48Speaker 1: camper on the back of, it and we were driving
- 44:51Speaker 1: it Around Southern, africa and the stuff that we did
- 44:54Speaker 1: with that WAS i, mean it was a challenge for
- 44:56Speaker 1: the land cruisers that were with. Us this vehicle had
- 44:59Speaker 1: no trouble lock all the diffs two hundred to one low.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Range it was incredible, stable portal assholes like it's it's you,
- 45:05Speaker 1: know it's just.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Bigger BUT i think.
- 45:07Speaker 1: It was short. Wheelbase it was fairly.
- 45:09Speaker 3: Compact, yeah so That's that's one of the things to
- 45:12Speaker 3: recognize is do you have an expectation of doing the
- 45:15Speaker 3: same trails that you have historically done in a pickup
- 45:20Speaker 3: or a jeep or, whatever like is that are you
- 45:22Speaker 3: trying to accomplish the same level of capability but with more.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Comfort that needs to dictate what. Vehicles, yeah for sure
- 45:29Speaker 3: you're purchasing yeah for, Sure but most people when they buy,
- 45:33Speaker 3: these it's AN rv that is capable of extended dirt road. Travel,
- 45:37Speaker 3: yeah you need the larger tires not only to look,
- 45:40Speaker 3: cool but because you need the load carrying capacity of that.
- 45:45Speaker 3: Tire on earth roamers and earth roamers actually run A unimog.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Tire it's A CONTINENTAL mpt eighty. One they are the
- 45:52Speaker 3: best thing on that. Truck but also the worst. Thing
- 45:55Speaker 3: they're ready to sixty eight mile an. Hour if you
- 45:58Speaker 3: the truck will do a lot more than sixty. Eight
- 46:00Speaker 3: but there's a lot of guys that they're on a
- 46:02Speaker 3: stretch of, pavement they're not paying.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Attention all of a sudden they're doing.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Eighty it's one hundred degrees out In texas and the tires.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Shred they blow that what had a. Straw they're, like,
- 46:12Speaker 1: OH i can't believe.
- 46:13Speaker 3: This i'm, like OH i can because you're you're at
- 46:15Speaker 3: the you're at the the extreme of what that tire
- 46:19Speaker 3: can carry in terms of, pressure and then you're exceeding
- 46:22Speaker 3: the speed and it's, hot and all.
- 46:24Speaker 1: These sixty eight miles an, hour you're, right that's that
- 46:26Speaker 1: is as fast as you can drive OR throwmr on,
- 46:28Speaker 1: mpts that's. It.
- 46:29Speaker 3: YEAH i think with the new there's like a forty
- 46:31Speaker 3: THREE mpt that is like a seventy five mile an hour.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Rating but you, know these tires have to carry you,
- 46:37Speaker 3: know you can't have a dual rear tire on the
- 46:40Speaker 3: off road vehicle because, rocks, sticks debris gets stuck in the.
- 46:44Speaker 3: Middle it becomes an. Issue it does very, quickly so
- 46:47Speaker 3: you're currently right. Now you, know in the same way
- 46:50Speaker 3: that like the limiting factor of a lot of travel
- 46:53Speaker 3: trailers and toy haulers was what the vehicles could. Tow you,
- 46:56Speaker 3: know they've gotten bigger as the tow. Vehicles sure higher.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Performance you, know the vehicles right now if smart have
- 47:03Speaker 3: to be built to the capability of those, tires.
- 47:06Speaker 1: It's limited by. Them the mpts are really good off.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Road they, handle they don't, chunk they don't they rarely have.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Flats they're, very very. Durable they're heavy duty military tires.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Keep them within their, range so their range of design
- 47:20Speaker 3: because particularly like the new again keep coming back to earth,
- 47:24Speaker 3: roamers but the new ltis they're a little, lighter right
- 47:29Speaker 3: because the carbon fiber composite, camper but they have more
- 47:32Speaker 3: horsepower and they have a ten speed, transmission so they
- 47:34Speaker 3: can just chug up stuff and go as fast as
- 47:37Speaker 3: you really. Want doesn't mean that you actually can you,
- 47:40Speaker 3: again you have to you, know you're driving a medium
- 47:43Speaker 3: duty or you, know or a heavy duty commercial. Truck
- 47:46Speaker 3: no matter what you're doing in any exhibition, vehicle you
- 47:48Speaker 3: are not building an expedition vehicle on AN f one
- 47:51Speaker 3: point fifty like there's that one company that has, god
- 47:54Speaker 3: what are they Something north that's building like. These technically
- 47:58Speaker 3: they're an exhibition. Vehicle they're putting them on AN f one. Fifty,
- 48:01Speaker 3: yeah and they have like boat speakers on the.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Back.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Yeah the tires aren't, there you, know the chassis not.
- 48:07Speaker 3: There you're not building them on AN lt. Truck you're
- 48:09Speaker 3: building them on a medium duty or heavy, duties, right
- 48:12Speaker 3: and you have to adjust your.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Mindset, yeah and to go off road in technical, terrain
- 48:18Speaker 1: particularly if you get into, mud you've got to have these.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Mpts but then you're capped on the. Speed if anybody
- 48:25Speaker 1: listening that owns an earthrom or check your speed right
- 48:28Speaker 1: now when you're going down the. Road, yeah it's sixty
- 48:30Speaker 1: eight miles an hour travel. Sets you just need to slow,
- 48:33Speaker 1: down go with the same speed as the. Trucks just cruise,
- 48:36Speaker 1: along get into a slower, speed and just remember if
- 48:39Speaker 1: anything goes, wrong if you have a blowout or a
- 48:42Speaker 1: cow runs into the, road or always going to be
- 48:45Speaker 1: better when you're going, Slower you're going to be way
- 48:47Speaker 1: better off having started off going. Slower.
- 48:49Speaker 3: YEAH i mean a lot of these vehicles have pretty
- 48:52Speaker 3: impressive braking. Systems once you're out of clamping pressure and
- 48:56Speaker 3: those tires lock. Up, yep your tire. Doesn't at the
- 49:00Speaker 3: end of the, day it's the tire that transfers the
- 49:02Speaker 3: breaking force to the. Ground once that tire locks, up
- 49:05Speaker 3: even with, abs there's still twenty thousand pounds to. Stop you,
- 49:08Speaker 3: know in a lot of, ways it's driving like you're
- 49:10Speaker 3: towing something really.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Heavy you have to wash the temperatures and then making
- 49:14Speaker 1: sure that you put as much weight forward as you.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Can We'll i'll look at some of these vehicles and
- 49:19Speaker 1: the back seat area will be completely, empty and then
- 49:22Speaker 1: the back of the vehicle is overloaded with all the
- 49:24Speaker 1: really heavy.
- 49:25Speaker 3: STUFF i, mean it's shocking and how many back seats
- 49:27Speaker 3: are empty without a greyhound in.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Next but you got to move the weight forward because
- 49:32Speaker 1: the rear tire is almost always the wind that blows.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Up you, know they're a large, vehicle so small changes
- 49:39Speaker 3: are hard to. Notice but by taking that rear case,
- 49:41Speaker 3: off and that accomplished two. Things, one it was the
- 49:45Speaker 3: weight to the case THAT i, removed and then, TWO
- 49:48Speaker 3: i moved things, forward probably removed things all. TOGETHER i
- 49:51Speaker 3: removed things all, together BUT i also MOVED i shifted
- 49:54Speaker 3: that weight forward close to the, axle so you've got
- 49:56Speaker 3: less of that pendulum effect on the back. End it's
- 49:59Speaker 3: much better off, road it's. Easier you do notice five
- 50:02Speaker 3: hundred pounds and your overall length is. Less let's talk
- 50:05Speaker 3: about actually the campers for a. Second, okay you've kind
- 50:08Speaker 3: of got to be aware that things are going to
- 50:11Speaker 3: break inside of these. Campers LIKE i carry extra. Latches you,
- 50:15Speaker 3: know if you've got a bunch of pots and pans and,
- 50:16Speaker 3: something you, know some of these campers will have like
- 50:19Speaker 3: little magnetic latches that reinforce things you need to carry.
- 50:22Speaker 3: LATCHES i carry a small thing of wood screws because you,
- 50:25Speaker 3: know WHEN i first got it and we were maybe
- 50:27Speaker 3: using it more off road than, most although Actually kevin
- 50:31Speaker 3: who and mine did use.
- 50:32Speaker 2: It off road quite a. Bit latches would.
- 50:33Speaker 3: BREAK i have kind of like a small i'm going
- 50:36Speaker 3: to call it like coach kit that stays in the
- 50:38Speaker 3: camper and it fixes things that are going to be problems.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Inside you, know so you do have to consider, That
- 50:45Speaker 3: LIKE i keep my truck stuff, OUTSIDE i keep.
- 50:48Speaker 1: My small little camper kit. Inside being careful about how
- 50:51Speaker 1: much weight you put on the fridge. Door that's a
- 50:53Speaker 1: thing that a lot of people don't think. About don't
- 50:55Speaker 1: overload this spice cabinet with wine. Bottles it's meant for,
- 50:59Speaker 1: spice lightweight or else those things. Fail the other THING
- 51:03Speaker 1: i noticed is that people will leave their water pumps
- 51:06Speaker 1: on while they're traveling on dirt, roads which results in
- 51:09Speaker 1: cavitation of the, pump oftentimes because of the. Vibration so
- 51:12Speaker 1: shut those. Things shut those things off when you're going
- 51:16Speaker 1: down the. Road make sure give it a walk around
- 51:19Speaker 1: outside and, in because it's shocking the number of times
- 51:23Speaker 1: that people will pull away and the blackwater drain hose
- 51:26Speaker 1: is still, connected or the charging ever or the charging,
- 51:30Speaker 1: hose or they set their coffee cup on the back
- 51:32Speaker 1: bumper or whatever because they were in. Camp give the
- 51:34Speaker 1: vehicle a complete walk around on the outside and then on.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Inside pull on every, cabinet make sure everything's closed and.
- 51:40Speaker 3: Latch developing that kind of pre, drive, yes, checklist you
- 51:43Speaker 3: got to do it every. TIME i don't have a.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Notepad i'm making SOME i don't think you need to
- 51:48Speaker 3: just walk around look on that kind of, preparation and
- 51:51Speaker 3: it's always you know your vehicle is going to tell you.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Things on commercial, trucks wheel bearings are more of a.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Thing so hub.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Temperature so WHEN i start my, checks WHEN i get
- 52:01Speaker 3: out of the, vehicle every TIME i get fuel OR i,
- 52:03Speaker 3: STOP i put my, tire my hand on the, tire
- 52:06Speaker 3: AND i put my hand near the hub because if
- 52:09Speaker 3: that wheelbaring is, going it's going to be creating a
- 52:11Speaker 3: lot of. Heat check you check things like that before we,
- 52:14Speaker 3: leave for you, know whether we just had, lunch, WHATEVER
- 52:17Speaker 3: i go AND i verify every latch is, closed because
- 52:21Speaker 3: if you're gonna you, know it sounds so, trivial but
- 52:24Speaker 3: if you, are you stop for lunch and you're on
- 52:26Speaker 3: an extended off road trail or, whatever and you break
- 52:30Speaker 3: a latch and you don't have a, replacement like you,
- 52:33Speaker 3: either the solution is that you then take the drawer,
- 52:35Speaker 3: out put it on your bed or, something because otherwise
- 52:38Speaker 3: it's just gonna sit. There that's how they really, break
- 52:41Speaker 3: as people forget to latch them.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Or then they slam. CLOSED i was on one trip
- 52:45Speaker 1: and their overhead cabinet wasn't, latched AND i can't remember
- 52:50Speaker 1: what it. Was some kind of a potter pan came
- 52:52Speaker 1: out and it landed squarely on the induction cook top
- 52:56Speaker 1: and then just stroy glass everywhere it had. Glass there
- 52:59Speaker 1: was glass everywhere inside and it destroyed the induction cook,
- 53:03Speaker 1: tops so they had no way way to, cook no
- 53:04Speaker 1: way to cook if you just take an extra couple
- 53:07Speaker 1: minutes to give it a Very, now we should be
- 53:09Speaker 1: doing that with every. Vehicle, Yeah and you, KNOW i
- 53:11Speaker 1: have a daily and a weekly check sheet THAT i
- 53:13Speaker 1: do on every, trip but it's even more important with
- 53:15Speaker 1: these campers because you're literally going down the road with
- 53:18Speaker 1: your house on the. Back AND i mean some of
- 53:19Speaker 1: these things actually have a washing, machine WHICH i thought was.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Ridiculous and you know till you live on the, road
- 53:25Speaker 3: until you live on the, road and you're, like oh,
- 53:27Speaker 3: MAN i just spent like two hours trying to find
- 53:29Speaker 3: a place to. Launch and cooking is a big thing.
- 53:33Speaker 3: Too you're no longer in the realm of little buttane.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Stoves you can bring, more which means you can prepare
- 53:39Speaker 3: more extravagant or healthy meals or healthy meals like it sounds.
- 53:42Speaker 3: Silly we almost exclusively cook in our instant. Pot now
- 53:46Speaker 3: it's a one. POT i do the dishes and Then
- 53:49Speaker 3: laura cooks because she's a great, cook a wonderful. Cook
- 53:51Speaker 3: but that's one less thing for me to, clean which you,
- 53:54Speaker 3: know not every one of these vehicles has huge water
- 53:58Speaker 3: storage or you may be trying to con irv, Water
- 54:00Speaker 3: like when we take it down To, baja.
- 54:02Speaker 2: We're a little bit. Less you.
- 54:04Speaker 3: Know we generally try and run on the water that
- 54:06Speaker 3: we have because we know it comes from our house
- 54:09Speaker 3: and the unfortunate reality of traveling in some places is
- 54:12Speaker 3: that the water isn't always or it's.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Hard to get to a hard to get water purified water. Station, yeah.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Exactly so you, know it's it's less to, clean it's
- 54:20Speaker 3: it's all you, know self. Contained it uses actually very
- 54:23Speaker 3: little energy once it heats, up it's just cooking on.
- 54:26Speaker 3: Pressure we're even thinking about bringing like a little air.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Fryer we we don't use the like. That we have
- 54:31Speaker 3: a diesel burner and we have like a microwave convection sure.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Thing we have like never used those things because these you,
- 54:39Speaker 3: know there's so many like one pot meals that you
- 54:42Speaker 3: can do in an instant pot.
- 54:44Speaker 1: And then you can Make french fries or. Whatever, yeah
- 54:46Speaker 1: you can do it air the cookies in the air.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Fryer we use it at home a.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Lot, yeah, sure you, Know laura has even made kind
- 54:52Speaker 3: of like a little cookbook for earth romer, recipes and
- 54:56Speaker 3: it simplifies trying to figure out what you're. DOING i,
- 55:00Speaker 3: Mean i'm sure most people can relate to, this but
- 55:02Speaker 3: you're going out, camping whether it's your, buddies your, family or,
- 55:04Speaker 3: whatever and you know how to grocery shop for, home,
- 55:08Speaker 3: sure but then you don't know how to grocery shop for.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Camping so having repeatability with the things that you're making
- 55:14Speaker 3: or one of twenty to choose, from, cool this is
- 55:17Speaker 3: WHAT i need for my. List that has been huge for. Us,
- 55:19Speaker 3: yeah it's removed a pain point of travel because you're
- 55:23Speaker 3: going to grocery stores that you're not familiar with.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Whatever, yeah so that's great. Advice on the interior, layout
- 55:29Speaker 1: just making it as open and spacious and simple as
- 55:33Speaker 1: possible is a great. IDEA i would never want to
- 55:36Speaker 1: have an expedition vehicle that didn't have a shower and a. Toilet,
- 55:39Speaker 1: otherwise what's the POINT.
- 55:41Speaker 2: I see some that.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Don't or one of my beefs with the well on
- 55:45Speaker 3: any pop top is that when you're, traveling assuming you're
- 55:48Speaker 3: traveling with somebody for a, while and you have to
- 55:51Speaker 3: use the bathroom to do a number, Two like you
- 55:54Speaker 3: don't want to be sitting under this half.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Wall like that's that's one of the reasons WHY i
- 55:58Speaker 2: like hard.
- 55:58Speaker 1: SIDE i went some. Privacy, yeah IF.
- 56:01Speaker 3: I have to go drop, one like even if you're
- 56:03Speaker 3: married to that, person like you don't want to be
- 56:05Speaker 3: making eye contact while.
- 56:06Speaker 2: You're doing, it you.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Know, so uh, yeah that's a good point, THOUGH i,
- 56:14Speaker 1: mean and it's really it depends on the. Person, yeah some,
- 56:17Speaker 1: couples you, know maybe they hold hands while they do,
- 56:20Speaker 1: that who. Knows but you just like for, everybody everybody
- 56:22Speaker 1: has different, needs and it's being really honest about what you.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Need and if one of your goals is to get
- 56:28Speaker 1: to remote technical, places you're gonna end up with a
- 56:30Speaker 1: you should get a much smaller. Camper, yeah if you
- 56:33Speaker 1: just really want an all wheel DRIVE, rv then get something,
- 56:37Speaker 1: big because you might as well have the washing machine in,
- 56:40Speaker 1: there you, know if you can afford. IT i, mean,
- 56:42Speaker 1: really it's BEING i think honest about what you want because,
- 56:45Speaker 1: unfortunately a lot of these expedition vehicles decisions are made
- 56:49Speaker 1: around how it reflects the ego as opposed to how
- 56:51Speaker 1: it reflects the traveler's. Needs your ego is going to
- 56:54Speaker 1: get a bump no matter. What so just let that
- 56:56Speaker 1: part of it go because you're going to be driving
- 56:58Speaker 1: something super, cool matter.
- 57:00Speaker 2: What, version pretty.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Cool they're all super, cool so no matter what version you.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Get the problem is is like spending two million dollars
- 57:07Speaker 1: on a, camper like no one, knows no one can
- 57:09Speaker 1: even relate to. That it's really about buying what you
- 57:12Speaker 1: need that really meets your.
- 57:14Speaker 3: NEEDS i you, KNOW i don't want to like disparage
- 57:16Speaker 3: a company or, anything but like a lot of the
- 57:18Speaker 3: LIKE gxv guys that do these very extravagant, builds they're
- 57:22Speaker 3: at over an expo and then they're just off into the,
- 57:25Speaker 3: ether like you never hear of or see these people
- 57:27Speaker 3: traveling BECAUSE i think they're obviously very. Expensive SO i
- 57:32Speaker 3: always correlate the ability to afford something with probably being you,
- 57:35Speaker 3: know fairly, busy and it's like it's this. Project it's
- 57:39Speaker 3: like they're building their. Boat but then they REALIZE i
- 57:42Speaker 3: didn't really need the party deck on top of my.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Camper that's the worst place to put weight on one
- 57:46Speaker 3: of these. Vehicles spend some time in, one you. Know,
- 57:49Speaker 3: unfortunately it's really hard to rent these BECAUSE i get
- 57:52Speaker 3: people that ask, me will you rent your earth rom
- 57:54Speaker 3: or for a week or.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Whatever i'm, like, absolutely not a number that.
- 57:57Speaker 3: Works if you just get somebody that doesn't know what
- 57:59Speaker 3: they're doing and they're going up a hill and they
- 58:01Speaker 3: just have the, thing you, know pegged going up a large, grade.
- 58:04Speaker 2: You could blow the motor on it for.
- 58:06Speaker 3: Sure you, know they don't latch the latches because that's you,
- 58:09Speaker 3: know it's just. New i'm not saying it's, negligence but
- 58:11Speaker 3: they just don't. Know and then, oh, well you, know
- 58:14Speaker 3: you gotta get a woodworker. In, yeah so it's it's
- 58:17Speaker 3: hard to. Know but but GENERALLY i think go with
- 58:20Speaker 3: the smallest camper and the least amount of stuff that
- 58:23Speaker 3: keeps you, comfortable like being able to be inside of
- 58:26Speaker 3: something that, is you, know kind of climate. Controlled that
- 58:29Speaker 3: is the. Luxury you don't need the Rare grecian marble.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Backsplash, yeah you really.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Don't you don't need the whatever some of these extravagant things.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Are and really consider.
- 58:40Speaker 3: This people that want bathtub And i'm, like it takes
- 58:43Speaker 3: a one hundred gallons of water to do a.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Bath public buy a CLASS A, yeah, true it's so.
- 58:48Speaker 1: True and then being a campsite where you're plugged in
- 58:50Speaker 1: the city water and you can have all the things you. Want,
- 58:53Speaker 1: yeah AND i think there's a lot of importance around
- 58:57Speaker 1: if you have the resources getting serialized, unit because you're
- 59:01Speaker 1: going to end up with a better, experience better, serviceability better.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Reliability but you're also going to gain back a bunch of.
- 59:07Speaker 1: TIME a good friend of mine built a custom expedition.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Camper he was not resource, constrained but he decided he
- 59:13Speaker 1: wanted to do it his, way and it took him
- 59:15Speaker 1: almost two years to build the. Vehicle AND i asked
- 59:18Speaker 1: him what of any regrets that he. Had he, said
- 59:21Speaker 1: my number one regret is THAT i didn't just buy
- 59:22Speaker 1: an Earth romer and. Leave, yeah and so fill in
- 59:25Speaker 1: their Earth cruiser and Leave adrenaline camper and leave buy
- 59:28Speaker 1: something that is a serialized unit that has a high
- 59:32Speaker 1: degree of reliability that's been well, proven and then, go
- 59:36Speaker 1: we only have so much. Time. Yeah it was his
- 59:38Speaker 1: number one regret is that he got exactly the vehicle
- 59:41Speaker 1: that he wanted with all of the, gadgets all of
- 59:43Speaker 1: the custom bumpers and suspension and all that other. Stuff
- 59:46Speaker 1: but he, said he, SAID i lost two years of
- 59:49Speaker 1: experiences and.
- 59:50Speaker 3: You can you can try and optimize as much as you,
- 59:54Speaker 3: want but the realities at hotels. Exist, yeah like if
- 59:58Speaker 3: you you, know rather than get some that's like massive,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Massive LIKE i don't think they're making.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: That earth roam ER hd.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: ANYMORE i think it was just too. Big it's too,
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: big too much.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Stuff it's just you, know like if you need if
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: you need the washer and dryer or this or, this
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: you have the coin to drop a million two million
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: dollars on. Something, presumably then you have the coin to
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: just stay a nice hotel and say, dry, clean this or.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Whatever LIKE i know that's not like the ethos of
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: traveling and what we like to, promote but there's nothing
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: wrong with.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: That you still stay in if you're after absolute. Comfort
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: at least once a week we stay in a hotel
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: when we're doing extended travels because living in a small
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: box with another person is still like living in a
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: small box with another. Person LIKE i want to go
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: have a drink at the, hotel despite.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: What the back splash is made out.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: Of, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly be, realistic you, know try
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: and get something that's as. Small the earth roamers THAT
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: i always look at with envy are the they have
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: like the suicide door on the.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Back they're the extended. Cab the extended cab that are THE.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: LTS i always look at those with a lot of,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: envy but Then i'm, Like, okay like that would be
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: great for like more off, Road LIKE i would love
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: to drive under those To South.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: America they'll make them.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Anymore in, REALITY i need the full back seat for the. Dog,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: sure and there's three of us in this space that
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: from the outside looks really, big but on the inside
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: isn't actually that. Huge and it was worth it to
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: have the two Feet So i'm really happy with.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: That could you are? Happy and, like look at how
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: long you've kept the. Vehicle it's literally met all of your.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Needs AND i think that that's the, key is you.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Bought there's a reason why they sell so Many Earth
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: roamers is because they are kind of. Dialed it's the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: same reason why they sell so Many Earth. Cruisers the
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: DIAL i lived in. ONE i lived in one for
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: weeks and weeks and, weeks AND i loved. It, YEAH
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: i absolutely loved.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: It they're really, good and you know there are you,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: know these things are very. Expensive there's just no way
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: of being around the bush with. That but everything's. Expensive,
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Everything everything has become. Expensive you, know there are options
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: that are out there now that are comparable and eyes
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: and functionality that are becoming more. Affordable again somebody's, like,
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: oh well that's so more than my, House like, yeah
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: it's an expensive, Space like that's why the core of
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: it is and the soul of it to me is
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: still like THE diy guys that are building their own
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: campers and there's a lot of them out, there and
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: there's a, lot but you, Know adrenaline has come out
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: with something that's really, attractive The Adventure TRUCKS, xt which
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: is kind of a sub OF. Gx they were acquired
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: by the group Behind. Storyteller there are options and in
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: this space these, days AND i think it's going to
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: be really cool to see where it goes BECAUSE i
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: see so much interest in. IT i really see this
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: kind of is like this progression of you, know they
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: start with the ground, tent go to the roof, tent
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: they go to the hardshell. Tent they'll be a truck
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: camper or a wedge, camper and then it's. Van you,
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: know as people's families, grow as, sure you get older
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: and you want a little bit more. Comfort it seems
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: like this is a segment of the industry that will
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: continue to, grow and as it, does it will become
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: more competitive and there should be more more options available
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: for different price. Ranges and once we start seeing vehicles
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: like this AT rv dealers and even earth Roam er
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: and Earth crews are now you can finance. Them finance
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: is a twenty YEAR rv. Loan, yeah, yeah you, know
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: some of them you can finance as equipment to kind
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: of keep your, cash you, know making. Money we could
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: still sell ours for more than we paid for. It
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: that's not always going to be the, case but with
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: some of these, vehicles when you start you're in these financial.
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: Circles they don't want to wait the year so you
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: can use yours and if it's in you, know kind
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: of like new, condition maybe you put ten fifteen thousand
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: miles onto, it probably selling it for what you bought it.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: For, yeah that's where we're at.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Currently it's not financial, advice but there's been a lot
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: of PEOPLE i know that have gotten a new Earth
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: romer every year or, two and we know a lot
