- 0:11Speaker 1: Dragon by Route Style's Gannet, Chapter nine, My father makes
- 0:17Speaker 1: a bridge. My father walked back and forth along the bank,
- 0:23Speaker 1: trying to think of some way to cross the river.
- 0:26Speaker 1: He found a high flag pole with the rope going
- 0:30Speaker 1: over to the other side. The rope went through a
- 0:34Speaker 1: loop at the top of the pole and then down
- 0:37Speaker 1: the pole around a large crank. A sign on the
- 0:41Speaker 1: crank said to summon dragon yank the crank report disorderly
- 0:47Speaker 1: conduct to gorilla. From what the cat had told my father,
- 0:52Speaker 1: he knew that the other end of the rope was
- 0:54Speaker 1: tied around the dragon's neck, and he felt sorrier than
- 0:58Speaker 1: ever for the poor dragon. If he were on his side,
- 1:02Speaker 1: the gorilla would twist his wings until it hurt so
- 1:06Speaker 1: much that he'd have to fly to the other side.
- 1:09Speaker 1: If he were on the other side, the gorilla would
- 1:11Speaker 1: crank the rope until the dragon would either choke to
- 1:15Speaker 1: death or fly back to his side. What a life
- 1:19Speaker 1: for a baby dragon. My father knew that if he
- 1:23Speaker 1: called to the dragon to come across the river, the
- 1:27Speaker 1: gorilla would surely hear him, So he thought about climbing
- 1:32Speaker 1: the pole and going across the rope. The pole was
- 1:37Speaker 1: very high, and even if he could get to the
- 1:39Speaker 1: top without being seen, he'd have to go all the
- 1:43Speaker 1: way across hand over hand. The river was very muddy
- 1:49Speaker 1: and all sorts of unfriendly things might live in it,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but my father could think of no other way to
- 1:55Speaker 1: get across. He was about to start up the pole
- 1:59Speaker 1: when despite all the noise the monkeys were making, he
- 2:03Speaker 1: heard a loud splash behind him. He looked all around
- 2:08Speaker 1: in the water, but it was dusk now and he
- 2:11Speaker 1: couldn't see anything there. It's me, crocodile, said a voice
- 2:16Speaker 1: to the left. The water's lovely, and I have such
- 2:20Speaker 1: a craving for something sweet. Won't you come for a swim?
- 2:24Speaker 1: A pale moon came out from behind the clouds, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: my father could see where the voice was coming from.
- 2:32Speaker 1: The crocodile's head was just peeping out of the water.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Oh no, thank you, so, my father. I never swam
- 2:39Speaker 1: after sundown. But I do have something sweet to offer you.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Perhaps you'd like a lollipop, and perhaps you have friends
- 2:47Speaker 1: who would like lollipops too. Lollipop said the crocodile. Why
- 2:52Speaker 1: that is a treat? How about it? Boys? A whole
- 2:56Speaker 1: chorus a voice shouted a raw lollipop, and my father
- 3:01Speaker 1: counted as many as seventeen crocodiles with their heads just
- 3:05Speaker 1: peeping out of the water. That's fine, said my father,
- 3:08Speaker 1: as he got out the two dozen pink lollipops in
- 3:12Speaker 1: the rubber bands. I'll stick one here in the bank.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Lollipops last longer if you keep them out of the water.
- 3:19Speaker 1: You know, Now one of you can have this one.
- 3:23Speaker 1: The crocodile who had first spoken, swam up and tasted it. Delicious,
- 3:27Speaker 1: mighty delicious, he said. Now, if you don't mind, said
- 3:30Speaker 1: my father, I'll just walk along your back and fasten
- 3:34Speaker 1: another lollipop to the tippy ear tail with a rubber band.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You don't mind, do you? Oh? No, not in the lea,
- 3:42Speaker 1: said the crocodile. Can you get your tail out of
- 3:45Speaker 1: the water just a bit, asked my father. Yes, of course,
- 3:49Speaker 1: said the crocodile, and he lifted up his tail. Then
- 3:53Speaker 1: my father ran along his back and fastened another lollipop
- 3:57Speaker 1: with a rubber band. Who's necks that my father and
- 4:01Speaker 1: a second crocodile swam up and began sucking on that lollipop. Now,
- 4:06Speaker 1: you gentlemen can save a lot of time if you
- 4:09Speaker 1: just line up across the river, said my father, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: I'll be along to give you each a lollipop. So
- 4:15Speaker 1: the crocodiles lined up right across the river with their
- 4:19Speaker 1: tails in the air, waiting for my father to fasten
- 4:22Speaker 1: on the rest of the lollipops. The tail of the
- 4:25Speaker 1: seventeenth crocodile just reached the other bank. End of Chapter
