- 0:21Very sharp scout. I'm turning human again.
- 0:26If I don't get out of this body soon, I'm screwed. You little shit.
- 0:31Do you know what you've done?
- 0:33I, I'm Chucky, and I'm your friend to the end. I like a little killing now and
- 0:39then. What's wrong with that?
- 0:39Music.
- 0:53Yes!
- 0:58Hey, buddy, welcome back to Citizen Frame. We're here to close out our Chucky retrospectives.
- 1:03You know, it's kind of funny. You know, I hated some of these films.
- 1:06And same thing like The Fire 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street and so forth.
- 1:10Anytime we end a retrospective, we kind of feel sad.
- 1:13Well, I mean, I would say that I'm sort of a bit Chucky'd out at the moment
- 1:17because I have went full on with it.
- 1:19You know i mean including the series which we'll
- 1:22sort of touch on later on as well so i'm sort
- 1:24of chucking it out but yes i'm sad as well to say goodbye to
- 1:27the little guy but i would say that there's none of them well yet we'll get
- 1:32to it soon enough that i would actually hate out of the original series you
- 1:37know that whatever there is seven films or whatever i think some are better
- 1:40than i think two is probably the weakest actually i have an appreciation for
- 1:44bride and seed i know You hate it, C.
- 1:46Are you going through the whole thing now? What are you doing here?
- 1:50Are we doing the intro? No, just say it. Just say it.
- 1:53Jesus Christ. You got that, everyone? All right. Well, thanks for joining us.
- 1:57And he just revealed that he hated the reboot in that sentence as well.
- 2:01So thank you. Well, I'll see you next week.
- 2:05Fuck her. Right. Anyway. Yeah.
- 2:09We're going to start with the culture, Chucky, and then we'll end with Chalice Play 2017.
- 2:15And Don Mussini's back this direct-to-video again,
- 2:18Universal is back because they're pretty happy with the success of the last
- 2:22one with the sister company that put it out for them so they decided to jump
- 2:26on board and give this immediately to Netflix that was the plan,
- 2:30you know what I get so pissed when I hear leakage and footage getting leaked
- 2:35and shit you know these guys work hard on their films whether you like the movies
- 2:39or not I'm not a big fan of Mussini's past work we talked about that with The
- 2:42Bride and The Curse no the seed and and the bride but i can certainly appreciate
- 2:48the effort that goes into films,
- 2:50and it pisses me off when these guys work hard and some fucking asshole in his
- 2:56mom basement gets a copy of it don't know how through youtube or twitter and
- 3:02then they leak it on both sites.
- 3:04And that's what kind of hurt this film a bit and,
- 3:09Yeah, Dom Mancini and Alex Vincent and the like, we're all pretty pissed,
- 3:12which is completely understandable, obviously.
- 3:15Yeah, Dom Mancini has said to the geniuses who leaked Cult of Chucky and tweeted
- 3:19about it, congrats, not only are you terrible people, now universal lawyers
- 3:24know who you are. Oh, I love it.
- 3:27Even Alex Vincent says, there's no logic behind it. It was coming on Netflix. You get to see it anyway.
- 3:32Yes. You know, why ruin the moment?
- 3:36But yeah, those are those little so-called fanboys. that love their cinema.
- 3:41They like to take a doubt or not when they have a chance. Well,
- 3:44the worst ones are the ones that actually go into the cinema.
- 3:48It's usually in somewhere like Malaysia or somewhere with their fucking mobile
- 3:51phone and video it on the cinema screen and then release it online.
- 3:56I mean, that was always a thing anyway.
- 3:58Yeah, but you know what? Whoever watches those are fans of cinema.
- 4:02Yeah, I mean... Let's get that. I mean, they're used. Nobody...
- 4:06I mean i actually think that's dead now unless you're
- 4:09in like yeah you're right third world country that does them or whatever but
- 4:12the most part i get people being
- 4:16excited about the release and and you know not being able to wait and stuff
- 4:20and busting to see it as soon as possible but at the same time a lot of this
- 4:25stuff is completely unwatchable anyway you know with a shaky phone basically
- 4:28yeah i'm checking off in the back row yeah exactly you see people walking past and stuff and, you know,
- 4:36people talking in the background. It's, it's, yeah. Popcorn.
- 4:39Exactly. My God, Godzilla's eating popcorn. This is amazing.
- 4:44All right. So we're here at the Kultichucky. This is four years later.
- 4:50We've got some of the cast back. We've got Fiona Dorough as Nika.
- 4:53Brad Dorough as Chuck. Alex Vincent as back as Andy.
- 4:56Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany and Jennifer Tilly.
- 4:59And then we've got Doc Foley, Nurse Carlos, Angela, and Claire, and Michael.
- 5:04I would say as well, other returning cast members, Kyle's back in a sort of
- 5:11post-credits scene. I'm going to laugh.
- 5:13That's the stupidest fucking thing of all time. Yeah, but I would say as well,
- 5:17the guy who plays Malcolm, multiple Malcolm in this also played the cop in the previous film.
- 5:25I don't care about that. It's not a returning character but a returning actor.
- 5:29Obviously your favorite of all time. Oh I can't. You just said that. Wow. Wow.
- 5:36So we open up and I do like the fact we open up and he's on a date and they're
- 5:42having the gun argument.
- 5:43You know she's more of a pacifist yada yada yada where he's obviously for the
- 5:47gun not for guns because of what he went through to protect himself.
- 5:51And then she goes, what's your problem? Well, a few years ago,
- 5:56my babysitter was killed along with my teacher and a caseworker and 37 other people.
- 6:02And she pretty much cussed the date off right there. I would say,
- 6:06though, that this is a really, a much darker version of Andy.
- 6:09I mean, he went to a very dark place here.
- 6:13He's basically, you know, a complete, you don't understand the gun thing for
- 6:17his protection but I mean he's become like one of the bad guys from Hostel he
- 6:22likes to indulge in a bit of torturing so he does,
- 6:26this is quite dark this is the dark until we get to the reboot this is the darkest of the Chucky's,
- 6:33he's not he's not really played for laughs this one I really don't believe that
- 6:37you got Jennifer Tilly he's got a very small cameo kind of in it and then,
- 6:42that's it everything else is quite uncomfortable and they're
- 6:45I mean they were definitely especially with
- 6:48Braddorff's connection and his daughter in it now was going
- 6:51for a one who flew the cuckoo's nest horror kind
- 6:54of feel yeah it's a psych ward subgenre film essentially you know there's been
- 7:00plenty of them over the years including you know in the 70s and stuff but while
- 7:05there is some good jokes in there especially one liners from Chucky it is quite a grim tone.
- 7:12Starting with Andy, how he's become, when we reintroduced him in the last scene of Curse,
- 7:20we do have that transition where he was this young kid as we knew him.
- 7:26Then he went to military school.
- 7:28Then military school to what we were introduced to in the last act of Curse.
- 7:33And it shows his progression. Even when he tells his date,
- 7:38Gun, you have the right to bear arms, yada, yada, yada. Then he rants off the
- 7:42body count. And then you go to his house.
- 7:45The whole place is full of carnage. It's full of weapons that cause the carnage.
- 7:50But most importantly, it's got animal heads everywhere.
- 7:53Yeah. So he's become this hunter also. So his killings become his lifestyle.
- 8:01And not to mention keeping the head of a Chucky that he blew off at the end,
- 8:04of course, and torturing it. Yeah, it's just dark stuff.
- 8:09If this was real life, this is a dark turn.
- 8:13But it's sort of understandable as well, because if you were tormented all your
- 8:18life by a serial killer in the
- 8:21body of a killer doll, you'd probably go to some strange places as well.
- 8:25I don't know if he's as psychotic as we were making a sound. He's not psychotic.
- 8:31Yeah, I just think he's more obsessed. I think he's more obsessed than he is anything. Yes.
- 8:39He's damaged. He's severely damaged by the traumatic events since he was six
- 8:44years old, essentially.
- 8:45So in a way, you can understand it to a certain extent.
- 8:50You know? So we open up. Now we're in this minimal security asylum, Harrogate.
- 8:57And you meet Doc Foley, who is actually a good character because with everything
- 9:03that's about to go on, on all these body counts, he does have a good twist.
- 9:07I didn't see it coming, believe it or not. So the actor playing him did a pretty
- 9:10nice job because obviously he ends up being a creepoid.
- 9:14So the character seems very sensitive for the first half of the film,
- 9:17actually, until we find out he's a really disturbing fetish.
- 9:21Well, he's basically a rapist, but even Chucky says, you know.
- 9:26One of the jokes in here by Chucky, where Chucky goes, I mean,
- 9:30fuck, I thought I was bad.
- 9:32I mean, this guy, I've got nothing on this guy. Yeah.
- 9:35He makes a comment. I don't know if I should kill him or take notes. That's right.
- 9:41Yeah. But the whole opening sequence, when he reintroduced to Nika,
- 9:46it reminded me a lot. And there's no way she didn't go for that.
- 9:50She was even playing like the Sarah Connor sequences in Terminator 2 when she
- 9:55was being interviewed by her shrink and as well as her whole mannerisms.
- 10:02The only difference is, is that Nika thinks she did kill these people.
- 10:06At this point in time, she does believe she is the one who killed her family
- 10:12members, and it wasn't Chucky.
- 10:14Yes, in the previous film. Yeah. She fucks Michael.
- 10:20That's right. That was a weird one for me. That was a weird one. Well, apparently,
- 10:24according to Fiona Doroth in interviews, apparently she got a lot of letters
- 10:29from people in wheelchairs after this scene praising her and congratulating
- 10:34her, even though she didn't write it, obviously, but she's playing the scene.
- 10:38Because, yes, even though we're in wheelchairs, we like to have sex too.
- 10:41But, yes, it is a bit sort of out of the blue.
- 10:45That's what I was more going with. I wasn't, I mean, I just think that's weird.
- 10:49You would write somebody going, oh yeah, yeah, you know, yeah.
- 10:53People in two wheelchairs can fuck. Yeah.
- 10:55I was like, well, it's a pointless.
- 10:59Well, it's just, I don't know. It's sort of sad that even though that she's,
- 11:03it doesn't really add all the thing to the story. That's my point. It's pointless.
- 11:07It's awkward. I mean, at least if you gave us some chemistry between these two
- 11:12first and And then if you quit too, they're fucking in the hallway.
- 11:15Yeah, I get what they're saying. That yes, people just to close their legs at
- 11:19work doesn't mean they don't want to have sex. Let's just move on from this
- 11:21conversation. It is random.
- 11:23Because we're going to get in trouble. Let's just move on. Right. No, no, no.
- 11:27We here at Citizen Frame know everyone can have sex. Okay?
- 11:34Besides Trevor. As long as it's in the right context.
- 11:38And as long as it's in consent on adults and all that sort of thing.
- 11:42You know let's just move on we're going to ruin it we're just going to yeah
- 11:45let's move on let's just move on yeah exactly I would say as well oh my god he's not moving on,
- 11:51I think it's to make it even more random apart from the dolls and bride having
- 11:57sex I think this is the only sex scene in a Chucky film who cares,
- 12:02yeah I'm just saying nobody wants sex nobody wants sex in a Chucky film or a
- 12:06slide they want to kill him well this is it you know,
- 12:10but anyway There actually is sex in the last one.
- 12:14You don't see it, but they have sex. Red Man and Jennifer Tilly.
- 12:19Yes, I know, but it's off screen. Oh, still sex. Yeah. Okay. Well, far enough.
- 12:27Yes, you got Claire, Madeline, Michael, Angela, Dr. Foley, and Nika.
- 12:33I do like these horror films when they have these, you get to know everyone,
- 12:37and they're kind of their works and why they're there.
- 12:40Of course, Madeline's being probably the most darkest.
- 12:46Yes, of the child. Yeah, of the child. But I do like the banter and how it works
- 12:50and how Claire kind of antagonizes her a bit and tells her that Chucky's coming
- 12:57for you, especially now that you're in a minimal security asylum.
- 13:01I would say in praise of don
- 13:04mancini he's quite a ballsy writer and director
- 13:07because you know you know i'm surprised this
- 13:10film didn't take a lot of flack for its portrayal
- 13:14of basically people with mental illness in a
- 13:17psych ward but to be fair to mancini and this does go to some dark places with
- 13:21some of the characters in the ward and you know there's quite dark humor there
- 13:25as well but to be fair to Mancini as a writer and director he doesn't flinch
- 13:30and he makes his film you can say the same thing about,
- 13:35Dream Warriors Dream Warriors,
- 13:38but no Dream yeah I see your point I do get your point different time and Mancini,
- 13:46despite not liking some of his work.
- 13:49The guy doesn't bow down to anybody him and David Kirsten are going to do what
- 13:54they want because ever since Tom Holland left, they had restrained.
- 14:01And Lafayette, there's a lot more, it seems like, studio involvement.
- 14:06But once Benzini got full control
- 14:08with David Kersner, that's where everything went balls to the wall.
- 14:12Not for the good, but I can understand your point that this is our film, we'll do what we want.
- 14:19Exactly, yeah. There certainly doesn't seem to be any studio interference here
- 14:23either. and to say that as a compliment?
- 14:26Well, keep in mind, this is direct-to-video, technically.
- 14:29So there's not much rating systems in that kind of universe.
- 14:35Well, there would be less in the mainstream. Yeah, so it's going to Netflix.
- 14:39So it's not going to have a rating system that you would have if it's going to mainstream cinema.
- 14:45So they can get away with a little more. Yeah.
- 14:49Um, I don't think it's as deep as you might think it is, but it is,
- 14:56it is good dialogue and it's by far the darkest of the Chuckies until we get to the reboot.
- 15:02Yeah, I would say, yeah, yeah. I mean, I do find, you know, even,
- 15:07well, throughout, to be honest, there is something of a lack of tension,
- 15:12and can feel a little flat, but we'll get to it as we get on.
- 15:16The only thing that holds this movie together are the killings.
- 15:19And I like, and I actually like the characters, Claire, Madeline, Michael.
- 15:25None of them are big dick-toe besides the one we think is the good guy, Dr.
- 15:29Foley, which is, like I said, it's nice misdirect so yes
- 15:32the casting and in the and the cast or in the end and the and the the characters
- 15:38that they're playing are quite i like them and that's and that's important and
- 15:43that's important so when they do get it especially i probably get them confused is it is it claire,
- 15:51the one who gets the fucking when dr foley
- 15:54is going to juice her and she's panicking because she sees
- 15:57the doll and they're saying it's because
- 16:00she cuts herself but chucky's the one who cut her and she's
- 16:03saying i'm not self in other words she's a self mutilator and she's she um she
- 16:08doesn't want to be you know tortured or getting shock treatment because it wasn't
- 16:14her fault and then the you know the chucky shows up and he puts the canister
- 16:19of compressed air hits the ground and the ceiling is glass.
- 16:23Yes, well that's also a reference to the killing of the dipshit couple and Brideachucky,
- 16:29you know the newly married couple I don't think it's a coincidence,
- 16:35I wouldn't say it's a reference.
- 16:38It's 100% a reference, but they're both beautifully shot, and it's snowing,
- 16:43so after she's beheaded with all the glass, you see the snow.
- 16:47My point is, I'm jumping ahead there for that scene, is because each character
- 16:51has a vulnerability and that vulnerability plays an act in their death.
- 16:56And that's, that's dark shit where dream warriors kind of didn't really do that
- 17:01as well. These guys do it a lot better.
- 17:03Yeah, well, fair enough. Yeah, I know what you're saying.
- 17:07Whereas Freddy would have went for their vulnerabilities and Dream Warriors,
- 17:11but Chucky's pretty much doing something similar here. So, yeah.
- 17:15I do love when Tiffany goes to visit and she's talking to the doc and she's
- 17:21like, they killed Alice. Alice is dead, by the way.
- 17:25And then obviously when he's got to tell Nika this, she kind of loses the plot a bit.
- 17:32How do they say she died? Yeah, that's right. Was it an accident?
- 17:35It was something hard, wasn't it?
- 17:36No, no, no. Well, at the very final scene, I got the impression that Alice has
- 17:41been put into, you know the way, Hide the Soul with Chucky.
- 17:46Towards the end of the previous film, we'll see the young girl and Chucky says,
- 17:51we're going to play a game of Hide the Soul.
- 17:53But with the final scene where we see the Tiffany doll, it's sort of suggested
- 17:57that Alice is inside the Tiffany doll.
- 18:01No, because we find out Chucky killed her.
- 18:06Yes, but there's a reference to hide the soul.
- 18:10So it appears that I know she was, I know it's sort of stated that she was possessed
- 18:17for a while at least by Chucky, but it didn't really work out.
- 18:21I'm sort of paraphrasing here, obviously.
- 18:23I didn't get that. I did get the impression yes, no, no,
- 18:27I think there is some dialogue that sort of suggests that but
- 18:30I did get the impression and I could be wrong that Alice
- 18:34is now inside the Tiffany doll but I
- 18:37have only seen some of the series and I know a lot of these plot points are
- 18:40tied up in the series and you know Glenn and Glenda return in the series and
- 18:45stuff and there's loads more that are tied up but I haven't seen all of the
- 18:50series I have just seen some of it so it might be worth checking out the series for that Okay.
- 18:57But when Tiffany goes she brings Chucky, she brings a Chucky doll because Alice
- 19:03wants her to have the doll.
- 19:04Yes. So now we have two dolls in this, in this award. We have Dr.
- 19:10Foley brought one for treatment purposes.
- 19:14And then we have the one Tiffany brought in. And then we'll have the one Andy
- 19:19brings for treatment purposes.
- 19:20When he makes the one he's torturing with the head into transfers that soul
- 19:26into the good guy doll. How does he do that, by the way?
- 19:30No, no, no. No, Charles Lee Ray has worked out a way.
- 19:34He said he was on a website called Voodoo for Dummies. No, Jesus.
- 19:37He's doing a one-night fix.
- 19:39One-night fix. No, serious. So he's worked out a way where he can basically
- 19:43put his soul into multiple dolls.
- 19:44But the only doll that's possessed at this point is the one that Tiffany brings
- 19:50to the hospital. Yes, I know that.
- 19:53Yeah, so then that doll puts itself into the doctor's doll as well.
- 19:57And then later on, the one that Andy has smuggled in because he wants to smuggle
- 20:02a gun into the ward, the one with the gun, who ends up getting a stupid haircut,
- 20:06they then put Charles Lee Ray's soul into that one as well.
- 20:10Okay, that's what I was getting through. Because I knew two were already possessed.
- 20:13I knew he was doing the voodoo crap. I was confused when he took the doll out.
- 20:17I do remember him sticking the gun in the belly, but the only reason he cuts
- 20:21the hair so he knows what's Chucky, because he's watching the news or reading
- 20:25the paper, and he sees there's a couple of Chucky dolls in this asylum.
- 20:28So now he's got to go and deal with that. That's why he needs the gun in there.
- 20:32And he cuts the hair of the Chucky so he knows it's the right Chucky to grab.
- 20:37Yeah. But by the time that comes, he's been possessed by Chucky three times. The other Chucky.
- 20:44Pretty stupid I mean to be fair I think it was only a matter of time before
- 20:50they had multiple chuppies you know what they could have done here they could have done Dr.
- 20:55Foley as we know the first act is quite good in the first half.
- 20:59Or first three quarters until you find out he's a scumbag they really could
- 21:04have played fast and loose with whodunit here and they could have really they
- 21:09really could have played off where Dr.
- 21:12Foley is actually the killer and Chucky is just kind of wandering around commenting
- 21:17people, it would have been a nice misdirect of who's killing who.
- 21:22Well, certainly having the doctor behind it all, just for some sort of,
- 21:26for his own research or something, just to use the patients as sort of research
- 21:32experiments with the Chuckies, that maybe would have worked well and maybe you
- 21:36could have had, I don't know,
- 21:37Tiffany was sort of egging him on or something, or he was being blackmailed
- 21:42or something by Tiffany or something like that. That maybe could have worked.
- 21:46But yeah, I mean, we do get a dark twist with him anyway, but
- 21:49it could very well have worked with to
- 21:52go even darker and he's actually behind it all yeah you know
- 21:55yeah I think they could have done something it would have been fun we had that
- 21:58with the cult we could have got that with Curse I mean only Curse and then Cult
- 22:02but yes but you know what I'm saying I mean I understand they kind of already
- 22:06had that murder mystery in the last one you don't really but it still works
- 22:10as a film but I just think would have could have should I guess you can say,
- 22:14it sort of suggests that they're going to go down that route whenever you know
- 22:18in the group therapy when he takes out the Chucky doll and says,
- 22:22well, let's use this doll for therapy, you know?
- 22:24But then they don't run with it, and it turns out it's Tiffany, essentially.
- 22:28Yeah, I think they try to use the.
- 22:32The characters as red herrings, especially Madeline, the one who killed her child, suffocated it.
- 22:40And there's a scene where there's an open grave, which is just disturbing. I don't know why that is.
- 22:45But it's this open grave, and Nika makes Michael go down there to see what's
- 22:50going on because she throws a Chucky doll in there.
- 22:52But she does that because she
- 22:55wants Michael to go down there to get the Chucky doll so he could play.
- 23:01Blah blah right i got the i
- 23:04know i got the impression that chucky told her
- 23:07to throw to throw
- 23:10him chucky yeah into the thing yeah so that he could possess
- 23:13malcolm i just said that and yeah yes but
- 23:16but but it's michael by the way it's michael
- 23:19it's it's malcolm i'm sure it's michael
- 23:22you sure positive right i think i think it's malcolm it's
- 23:25michael don't question me on this again or you're fired well we'll check that
- 23:31out after the course no it isn't right at it's michael right no because he has
- 23:35several names here where where though is it not that he that he pertains he's
- 23:39michael an american footballer or something is it michael phelps he's listed as,
- 23:44michael in the credits right okay but i
- 23:47think his real name because he takes on multiple names like mark zuckerberg
- 23:50and stuff because oh that's right that's right i
- 23:53heard nug him a couple times too but it's michael's yeah
- 23:56but okay yeah but he's also referred to as
- 23:58multiple malcolm but which is also a reference to multiple
- 24:02migs from the sign of the lambs i think but no
- 24:05my impression whenever he then is possessed by charles lee right whenever he
- 24:11jumps into the open grave but there's a good twist later on before his death
- 24:15where it's revealed that actually he's a dipshit and he's not really possessed
- 24:18at all yeah so he's not he only thought he was that's what i'm.
- 24:24I knew that that's why I said Chucky lured him there,
- 24:27Yeah. By using Madeline. Yes, I know. But even Chucky's possession of him,
- 24:32it's revealed later on, wasn't real.
- 24:35It didn't happen. It was only in his head. It's a misdirect.
- 24:37He's done. Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 24:40And because Michael is so easily manipulated with all these different names
- 24:44and personalities, that allows Chucky to play on that.
- 24:48And that's what I'm saying with how smart the film quite is.
- 24:52I don't think people are seeing that to where he's using everyone's weakness
- 24:56or the reason And they're there as an approach to get them to do what he needs. Yeah.
- 25:04I like when Chucky gives her the finger.
- 25:09Yes, from the window. Yeah, right there she knows this is happening. This is legit.
- 25:14That is the... And Chucky's real. It's not like something very smart in the files he finds.
- 25:20It's just him simply looking up at her, smiling, and giving her the finger.
- 25:24Yeah. then she knows the Chuckster's back,
- 25:29and she's not a killer and she's not crazy as
- 25:32she states later on during the hypnotism scene by the way which again another
- 25:38big reference to the exorcist whenever she's being hypnotized you know the flashing
- 25:42light that's exactly the same way that Reagan is hypnotized in the exorcist
- 25:46oh there you go there you go,
- 25:52The film, the setting's pretty good. Yeah, everything's white. Yes.
- 25:58I would hate to be the janitor at this place. I mean, you got to work your ass off.
- 26:05Yeah, so this is where Alex gets confused because he sees the paper.
- 26:09So he starts realizing, what the fuck? And he has to get Chucky back.
- 26:13He's got to get the gun in there to take care of Chucky.
- 26:15And the reason we finally get it's called Cult of Chucky is because,
- 26:21yes, he has found a way to put his soul into a group so technically,
- 26:27cult yeah exactly and don't forget there's also the original Chucky head that
- 26:32Andy Barclay is torturing back in his own house you know the one that he.
- 26:37I brought that up in the beginning yeah yeah but I'm just reminding you know,
- 26:41you don't you're just reminding what I just told everyone that's cool no no
- 26:44I'm just reminding you because I know you have a head like a sieve but anyway,
- 26:47well I mean reminding me I brought it up in the beginning yeah but I'm just
- 26:50reminding you because I know what you're like.
- 26:52He was torturing that Chucky head. I brought that up.
- 26:55That's the original Chucky, by the way. These ones are... That's what I said.
- 26:59Yes. The one he shot at the end of the curse.
- 27:02Yes, I know that, but I'm just reminding you. You know, you don't listen to
- 27:05word. You didn't listen to word.
- 27:06You're probably looking at colors in your house right now, looking,
- 27:09oh, look, a butterfly. Yeah, right.
- 27:13Yeah, no, I was just keeping you right because I know what you're like.
- 27:16It's probably your rage as well. It makes no sense. Why would you keep me right? It makes no sense.
- 27:19I planted that, say, you know what let's move on
- 27:22yes let's talk about madeline breastfeeding chuck oh you
- 27:26are right right you sick fuck so couldn't wait to get on you know if you're
- 27:34not you know there's a great there's a great line you know chuck he's a boy's
- 27:38breast friend is his mother yeah from psycho Exactly, psycho. Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:44But this is where, again, he plays on their weaknesses.
- 27:49So, yes, it's kind of a creepy breastfeeding. You don't really see it,
- 27:53but you do see a little blood on her nipple coming through her gown.
- 27:58But this is where then Madeline smothers her like she did her baby.
- 28:01Yeah, that's really fucking creepy.
- 28:03It's pretty, you know, her backstory is pretty dark anyway, but it's actually
- 28:07handled very well by the actress and the way it's written.
- 28:10So it is. But obviously, like I'm saying, you know, Chucky is manipulating the
- 28:14situation, so he is for his own ends.
- 28:17And she actually has a pretty decent death scene as well, where Chucky basically
- 28:22puts his hand down her throat and, you know, and basically pulls her insides
- 28:28out. That was cool. Yeah.
- 28:32Fucking. She's a child killer. Fuck her.
- 28:36Well, we'll not get down that route, but yeah, no, which is obviously a very
- 28:41old... We've gone through breastfeeding dolls to having sex in wheelchairs.
- 28:48But we're, no, no, we're not going down this route. On Citizen Frame,
- 28:50we talk about the heavy subjects, you know what I mean? And we don't,
- 28:53like the old man scene, we don't flinch away from them.
- 28:56So we don't... But yes, actually, some of the best scenes are actually now when
- 29:00we have the three Chuckies bantering with each other. You know?
- 29:04And I love the one with the fucking stupid haircut.
- 29:07It's the best. And I do think it's funny how Andy gets institutionalized by just punching the cop.
- 29:14That would never happen. He's not getting arrested or anything.
- 29:17There's an institutionalized, which will never happen.
- 29:19I would say as well the finale is I love this stuff with the three Chucky's
- 29:25sort of battling with each other.
- 29:26It's a good laugh, actually, and probably the best part of the film.
- 29:29I find the finale overall to be generally quite weak,
- 29:32especially the adley barclay resolution of his story it
- 29:35just you know nika possessed by charles lee ray
- 29:38just basically leaves him in the sale there's no
- 29:41like you know final showdown or fight or anything you know it's yeah it's just
- 29:47generally a bit choppy and a bit sort of quite there's no real tension and quite
- 29:52flat i i find with this oh i mean you're not gonna get much tension really with the Chucky's.
- 29:59We did with the last one, which was a pleasant surprise. So I'm surprised they didn't go that route.
- 30:03I think the whole point with Andy, Andy's lost the plot so much,
- 30:08is that he's become so obsessed with getting the Chucky, he ends up being placed
- 30:13in an asylum with the very doll he brought in.
- 30:17So kind of ironic, I guess you can say. Ironic ending to how he gets it.
- 30:21I think what they were hoping for was banking on a sequel.
- 30:25I didn't, now I'm sure the TV series does play on it, I saw the first two seasons,
- 30:30I didn't I don't remember much of it, I remember most of the first season,
- 30:33a lot of it, but I do know they do answer a lot of questions Yes,
- 30:38yeah But I haven't seen all series to be able to Andy and Kyle,
- 30:42as far as I'm aware from what I've seen of it Andy and Kyle are basically chucky
- 30:47bounty hunters, they go about Yeah, they come back in advance, yes,
- 30:52and they pretend like they work for government agencies and stuff but they're
- 30:55just looking to get into people's houses to kill the Chucky dolls essentially that are there and uh.
- 31:03Yeah. So if you guys want to learn a little more what happens to these characters,
- 31:06you do get to know what happens to them in the series.
- 31:09It's a fun series. It's actually very well done. It was up for a couple of awards
- 31:13and they just canceled it because where are we going to go with this at this point?
- 31:17So, but. It ran for three seasons anyway.
- 31:21It's a lot more competent in the Friday the 13th series where there's no Jason.
- 31:26And a very lot more competent than Freddy's Nightmares. I used to watch that
- 31:29Friday the 13th series, you know, without Jason, you know.
- 31:33It was actually not bad, but he should have called it Yeah, mythology series
- 31:37Yeah, yeah So we got the, during the finale You got the doc and he's bringing
- 31:42out these red shoes Because he juices Our girl here,
- 31:47So she's immobile really Yes.
- 31:51And he's going to put These red pumps on her feet What the fuck?
- 31:57This is where It's sort of suggesting that
- 32:00he's some sort of Fruit fetish as well possibly a
- 32:03shoe fetish you know so he you know
- 32:06but he's I think having a shoe or foot
- 32:08fetish is the least of this guy's crimes to
- 32:11be fair you know yeah I think but it
- 32:14takes you out though because the movie technically isn't a comedy it's not a
- 32:17regular child's play it's a little darker toned so when you start adding stupid
- 32:21quirks like that you kind of ruin it where just keep him as an evil prick don't
- 32:25give him a quirk that's a quirk to be fair I don't think yeah but I don't think
- 32:30even his quirk is done in a comedic light
- 32:33I think it's more, I think it's basically just to add to the scene, you know what I mean?
- 32:37To add more layers to the scene, you know, that sort of thing but I don't think
- 32:41it's not done lightly, if you know what I mean.
- 32:46Well, this is where we find out during the conversations that he did kill.
- 32:52He's the one who killed Alice. Yeah.
- 32:54And so Nika starts coming completely to light of what's going on.
- 32:58And obviously that pisses her off, but it doesn't do much because she ends up becoming.
- 33:04She gets possessed. Her dad. Yeah. Well, pretty much. Yeah.
- 33:08And this is actually, I believe the first time I know what happened to Alice off screen.
- 33:13I think this is the first time that we've seen actually another human where
- 33:17Chucky actually is successful in transferring his soul to a human,
- 33:22yeah we never do see it yeah well apart from here you know yeah you see Tiffany
- 33:29do it yes I know that yeah that's insane yeah but we don't know she's successful,
- 33:35until the end I believe at the very end yeah at the very end yeah but yeah Yeah,
- 33:42there you go. It was good. It's not a bad little film.
- 33:45It's a lot more competent than The Seed and Bride.
- 33:50It's not as good as Cult, but Cult's pretty decent. I can't see them mirroring
- 33:54it again, so they're going to change things.
- 33:56The one thing I do like with Mancini and Kirshner is that they change things up a bit.
- 34:00They kind of say, well, we don't want to do a copy and paste.
- 34:02Let's do something a little different, and they did do that.
- 34:05I do think of all sequels, it's one of the better ones.
- 34:08Yeah, it would be, yeah, it would be, I mean, it has a lot of sort of things
- 34:13going for it, and some great ideas and sort of death scenes,
- 34:17and also, you know, banter between the different Chuckies and stuff, but overall,
- 34:21it does feel a little flat in terms of direction,
- 34:24and, you know, especially with the finale, the finale does feel a bit anticlimactic, but,
- 34:29you know, generally, it's quite enjoyable, and it's a good continuation of the story.
- 34:35A couple years have gone past, and Universal has walked away.
- 34:40MGM has the rights again. MGM initially had the rights, I believe,
- 34:44for the original Child's Play.
- 34:46And then Universal took over for the second one. So MGM has him back now,
- 34:51and they decided to do a whole reboot, a whole remake, cut and move on.
- 34:57While Mancini was not happy about it, he went on to create the TV show around the same time. Yes.
- 35:03They both come out at the same time. I know there are some legal battles where
- 35:07Mancini wasn't happy that they're doing a reboot while I'm trying to.
- 35:12Continue the story could cause some confusion but either way Mancini should
- 35:17be alright because the show did quite well for the first couple years there,
- 35:21but yeah we're here with Child's Play 2019,
- 35:24this is a dark take on the Child's Play they don't play for laughs if they do it doesn't work,
- 35:30I was a fan of this when I first saw it I'm still teetering on it a bit.
- 35:35It's got some really good elements, good gore, great villains.
- 35:40People deserve it. They twist things around as we jump into 2019.
- 35:45Now, this is directed by a Norwegian director, Lars Kjellberg.
- 35:49He did a film called Polaroid, and then he did the remake of his own movie, Polaroid.
- 35:54Not a bad film. He's a good get to grab for this film, I guess.
- 35:59$10 million to make. I like low budget. And it's low budget It shot pretty well
- 36:05For a low budget film With 10 million And it made 44 million worldwide.
- 36:11Let's just chuck it. Chucky. Yep. Josh played 2019.
- 36:15We got some nice cast here. We got Karen played by Audrey Plaza, who I like.
- 36:21Tim Matheson plays Henry Cowson. It's pretty much just a cameo.
- 36:24Yes. I actually would like to see Chris Sarandon in that part, but we didn't.
- 36:28We got Andy played by Gabriel Bateman. Then we got a bunch of, you know, Pug, Shane.
- 36:34Oh, the Stranger Things guy? Mike. Yeah. I like. Yeah, exactly.
- 36:39Which hurts the film. Totally. Mike, who I liked a lot, Detective Mike you got
- 36:43Doreen, his mom and of course the voice of Chucky, which is perfect if you're
- 36:47not doing Brad Dourif Mark Hamill's the perfect choice I disagree completely so,
- 36:54yeah, we'll jump into that now because Trevor's ready to fight now yeah, I do like the movie.
- 37:04They decide the opening up is the CEO he's introducing the new Buddy Doll I
- 37:09do like how they modernized Buddy, who is no longer a good guy doll. It's the Buddy doll.
- 37:15And Castle Incorporation is responsible for these guys.
- 37:19I do like how they modernized it. If you can do a remake, you know, you got to modernize it.
- 37:26So, obviously, by today's standards, Buddy is pretty much a lexicon. It's an up.
- 37:31And this whole setup is very Black Mirror-esque, you know?
- 37:37Yeah, yeah. I can definitely see that playing like a short film or sorry,
- 37:41a short point of an anthology series. Yes.
- 37:44I do like that setup. I love the introduction of we go to Vietnam,
- 37:50and this is where the dolls are made.
- 37:53And it shows how these line workers are treated by their process. Yeah.
- 37:58It's sweatshops. And I like that. Excuse me, actually. And I like the fact when
- 38:04this poor man got slapped,
- 38:06one of the technicians, he decides to take one of these dolls he's working on
- 38:10and override everything and let it do anything it wants.
- 38:14This is where we get the buddy here's the thing and and
- 38:18then let me finish real quick let me finish please then he
- 38:21then we cut away two guys talking
- 38:24outside the factory and a nice little jump scare we
- 38:27don't see it coming the man commits suicide flops
- 38:30on top of one of the one of the company's vans now this
- 38:33is pretty much the setup real quick setup like we
- 38:37got in the original with the chasing with you know with our boy
- 38:40ray there but this is their version and you
- 38:43sold me on this version i liked the opening sequence things
- 38:46will fall flat but the opening sequence yeah i
- 38:49will say that i did the vietnam opening sequence
- 38:53is is definitely a strong point of this film but here's the thing uh it's suggested
- 38:59that whenever the guy basically messes about with this body doll and basically
- 39:04removes all the settings whatever he does the safety settings and then commits
- 39:08suicide with the thunder and lightning going on in the background,
- 39:12it's heavily suggested that he has in some way put his soul into.
- 39:20This body doll, but it's never followed up. It's left by the wayside.
- 39:25Oh, it's like, no, you're accusing the film of something it didn't do.
- 39:29No, it does suggest it. That was not the intention.
- 39:31That was not the intent of this film. It does suggest it. Now you're just making
- 39:34up scenes that you're saying it happened.
- 39:36I've never heard that vert. No, I know that. That's just probably just a nod.
- 39:41That's probably just a nod that something's coming.
- 39:44And that's what we saw in the original child's play, the lightning. Well, fair enough.
- 39:49But what I would say, this film definitely misses the voodoo possession angle.
- 39:56It's one of many things, actually, it's missing. But you know what I mean?
- 39:59I wanted the sort of possession voodoo.
- 40:02I want the Dr. Death shooting. You're an abomination, Chucky.
- 40:06You know all this sort of thing and it does hurt the film by having it just
- 40:11basically a malfunctioning doll an app basically well play it as we go here.
- 40:19She's a single mom, just like we had the original. She works in retail,
- 40:23just like the original. I do like the fact they make the kid older.
- 40:27So he's going to be a little more smarter and wiser. He's actually the character
- 40:30in this and the best actor. Was that?
- 40:33The kid who plays this 13. Kid's very good in it. Yeah, he's the best.
- 40:37Yeah, he's very good at it. And Mike's very good. I think all the actors.
- 40:41The mom's a dimwit. I couldn't stand the mom.
- 40:44Yeah, she was a dimwit, especially with the boyfriend. Yes.
- 40:48But you got to realize she explains she had him at a very young age when she was in high school,
- 40:57so you kind of see that she still has that maturity level she doesn't have that
- 41:02maturity level as an older mother would have.
- 41:06She's still pretty fucking annoying to say the least. She's still annoying yeah
- 41:09she's no Catherine Ange exactly and the kid Wiley's good he's no Alex Vincent
- 41:15either but yeah they just don't have the same likability as the original Andy and his mother.
- 41:22I'm sorry, but, but, but the kid who, as I just said, he's actually a very good
- 41:25actor. And I don't think I've seen him in anything before or since.
- 41:30He's done some good stuff. He did Lights Out, which is a great little film.
- 41:35That was one of his first roles. Yeah. He was younger. He was younger then,
- 41:39but no, he's had a pretty good career for himself.
- 41:41So he's done all right. He does play the vulnerability of this kid.
- 41:45Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. yeah what
- 41:48i don't like mark hamill
- 41:52if you're gonna replace by dwarf mark he's the king of voices
- 41:55you know we know when we plays the joker so what hurts the film and it's a big
- 42:02one is the design of chucky it's awful is awful it's it's not creepy it actually
- 42:11is creepy but not creepy,
- 42:12like, ooh, creepy. More like, ugh.
- 42:15It's terrible. I couldn't buy this. It looks like if they took a cabbage patch,
- 42:19kid, and they made it plastic.
- 42:20Aesthetically a mess. And I would say as well that Mark Hamill's voice acting,
- 42:25and again, like you say, he's a great CV, you know, with the joker and stuff.
- 42:30I think his voice acting is very poor here.
- 42:36That's the problem. It's not his fault. And you know why? Because of the way
- 42:40they designed the chucking.
- 42:42His voice is coming out of a voice box or like a computer box.
- 42:47So it's coming off like you want out of a laptop. Yeah. Okay.
- 42:51So it's going to come off. It's not going to have a stronger presence like Brad would.
- 42:57If they, if, if, so that's the human element. It's just irritating.
- 43:01Don't even start me about that stupid fucking song. The buddy song. You know what I mean?
- 43:06I love the buddy song. It's You Are My Sunshine, but with I Am Your Buddy or some crap like that.
- 43:13I like the buddy. No, no. Mark Hamill's voice acting here is at best irritating.
- 43:19It just nails up a blackboard with so much of this, including the design.
- 43:23I think the problem is what they're trying to do, and I can appreciate what they're trying to do,
- 43:28was they were trying to make two versions of this buddy doll,
- 43:33which is now what he calls Chucky, which there's the inside
- 43:36joke he wants to come hung solo and there's
- 43:39mark hamill doing the voice he goes what chucky but so
- 43:43anyways it's chucky but what was going on was
- 43:46they were trying to do and it doesn't work
- 43:50they do with the eyes blue eyes he's
- 43:52happy red eyes he's angry but the problem
- 43:57is they're going to sell it as two personas there's
- 44:00the good guy chucky and what's he hey just want
- 44:03to be your friend we cool i'm sorry i apologize i over
- 44:06i was at my boundaries that guy then you've got
- 44:09the one who's going to go fucking rip faces off and shit
- 44:11yeah the problem is you're going to do that have the
- 44:14nice you know the creepy kind of tone mark hamill that you don't like but that
- 44:19would work for that and then when he does get raged we get a violent abrasive
- 44:25brad dorf-esque kind of quality but we don't the voice change doesn't change
- 44:30it's the same tone and that is a problem. I agree completely.
- 44:34So too. And, you know, in the originals, we'll have, you know,
- 44:39the Chucky voice that isn't voiced by Brad Dourif.
- 44:42You know, the whole, hi, I'm Chucky. Wanna play? Howdy ho!
- 44:45And then we'll then jump to the sinister rage of Brad Dourif.
- 44:51That's all I wanted here. You know, that's all I want from a child's play.
- 44:54They could have done. I don't get it.
- 44:55They could have brought the voice actor back who did the original Chucky.
- 44:59Possibly. He's still around. Yeah.
- 45:01No, he the interviewer in the doc series. I think it was a woman.
- 45:04They could have brought him back. Yeah.
- 45:07Or anyone could have done that. Anyone could just come back and go,
- 45:09hey, how do you know, hey, buddy, or whatever.
- 45:11And then have Mark Hamill take over for the darker toned.
- 45:16You know what the problem is with this film? They were trying to tap into the
- 45:19Stranger Things market, even
- 45:20the whole sort of, with the gang of the kids who are irritating as fuck.
- 45:24You know, just like actually the kids from Stranger Things, so I suppose they
- 45:28sort of nailed it in that sort of way.
- 45:29But there were sort of you know even the
- 45:32fact that this was this film was marketed as from
- 45:35the makers of it you know which is very much in
- 45:38keeping with that sort of teens going on an adventure sort of film with horror
- 45:44elements and i just hate that sort of crap so do obviously there's a lot of
- 45:49other problems here including lack of character development relatable characters likable characters but.
- 45:57I disagree with that. You're wrong on that, 100%. You're completely wrong.
- 46:00In fact, that's probably the best part of the film. I like the fact that Andy
- 46:04has no friends. I like the fact that the mother is working hard.
- 46:08She's naive because of her age. I like the fact that she's trying to get him outside the box.
- 46:13I like the fact that the cop, Mike, played by Mike, and go and visit his mother,
- 46:17Doreen, and he meets her in the hallway trying to hide from his mom,
- 46:20pretending he's meeting friends.
- 46:22I like all that. I think you're completely wrong on how they build the characters.
- 46:27I do like the two friends he does make.
- 46:30When he starts getting the gang of the Goonies, then I go, this is pissing me
- 46:34off now. Yes, yes. But you're wrong.
- 46:38This has better character development than the original Chalice Blade does. Well.
- 46:43But the only difference is the original Chalice Blade was better written.
- 46:48Yeah, well, this is it. It's down to the writing. Yes, there is efforts at sort
- 46:52of building characters and, you know, character development and stuff,
- 46:56but it doesn't really go anywhere.
- 46:57We'll just get the characters and their treats. Of course it does.
- 47:00Of course it does. Really?
- 47:02Yes, it does. Of course it does.
- 47:06All the characters that he meets intertwine, interact with this doll eventually
- 47:10some way. None of them are their personal journeys.
- 47:13None of them really, apart from being attacked by Chucky, they don't really
- 47:18have any sort of journey to go on on a personal level. Now, I would say it's probably my age.
- 47:26What journey are you looking for? I'm dying to hear this. Well,
- 47:29fair enough. But I just found them less relatable. Fair enough.
- 47:33You can't get away with that.
- 47:35You're dismantling the film.
- 47:37Okay, then you can rip on Chalice Plate for that. Well, no, no,
- 47:40Chalice Plate does have a... Well, what happened to Chris Sarandon?
- 47:42What happened to Mike the Cobb? He went from being a complete...
- 47:44What happened to Mike the Cobb and Chris Sarandon?
- 47:46I'll tell you if you let me finish. I don't see a journey. I'll tell you if you let me finish.
- 47:49He went from a cynical non-believer in this crap that he was being told about at all to eventually...
- 47:57So did Mike here. I know. I was just... If you let me finish.
- 47:59I was just actually going to say... No, you're trying to think.
- 48:02You're trying to backpedal.
- 48:04You're backpedaling. You're backpedaling. No, I'm not. Let me finish. right here's
- 48:07the thing i was going if you would actually let me finish the
- 48:10character of mike here and it's probably my age is actually
- 48:13the only possibly the only likable and relatable character here and yet it could
- 48:19be my age because i do like the lines where the kids are like making comments
- 48:23and stuff and he and he goes fucking millennials you know and stuff like that
- 48:27so but i just don't think he's as well written or i have to say played as chris sardin in the original,
- 48:35but you liked Andy in this I think he's well, no I think the actor's good and I do like.
- 48:42The actor's good he finally gets a mother figure of Doreen because we all know the mother's clueless,
- 48:49and Mike the cop takes him under his wing Mike's investigating everything and
- 48:54for all the poor bastard's niceness to what he's done for Andy to try to help
- 48:59him out, to kind of hear his side of the story,
- 49:02his mother gets slaughtered because he's taking a blind eye to what Andy's trying to tell him.
- 49:07So his mother gets slaughtered by this so-called doll.
- 49:10Then you had Pug, the creepy perv. I like to call him Trevor.
- 49:15He was a pantomime fucking character. I mean, even... Yeah, but it just,
- 49:19you needed it, you needed it.
- 49:21You had the two, and I like the fact...
- 49:24He played the first kind of act. He was kind of protecting Andy.
- 49:27So he went after the douchebag boyfriend who's cheating on his wife and kids.
- 49:33I just think it's very hard to take serious as a character because it's like,
- 49:35it's almost, right, we need a perv. So let's tick all the boxes for perv stereotypes.
- 49:40Overweight, sweats like a fucking pig, has the glasses.
- 49:44He also has the CCTV and all this here. It's like ticking all the boxes. Oh, he's a fuck. Yeah.
- 49:50His death was brilliant. It is quite a brutal death and probably the best death, actually.
- 49:55Yeah. I still go with the boyfriends.
- 50:00Now, that's another thing.
- 50:02Shane's death was awesome when he gets fucking- Well, he deserves it.
- 50:05When he's skilled. But he's a bit of a pantomime character as well. Pantomime asshole.
- 50:09There's no real nuance here. Yeah, but they did that. They did that because
- 50:13the whole point was the first two major deaths are going to be these two assholes. Yes.
- 50:17So you want these two to get it, right? So when Chucky is protecting Andy,
- 50:21when Shane goes into his room and kind of being almost physical with him,
- 50:25and then you have the perv just spying on his mother in the shower and stuff,
- 50:30these two deserve to get it. So they really want you to get it.
- 50:33So at this point, you're kind of, yeah. No, no. I get it, but it's tough.
- 50:37Let me finish. Let me finish. Let me finish. Can I finish? Can I finish?
- 50:41Can I finish? Can I finish? Can I finish?
- 50:43You rat bastard. So anyways, so as we're rooting for these two guys to get it,
- 50:48he starts turning on Doreen, you know, the nicest person in the whole fucking film.
- 50:55And that's where you're kind of taking that journey to where you're like,
- 50:58oh, he's just being protective at first.
- 51:00He doesn't know what he's doing.
- 51:01And then he turns when he goes after Doreen. That means he's full on.
- 51:05And I like that. I do like, we talk about journeys, and Chucky has one in this
- 51:11one. He becomes full-on malfunctioned once that happens.
- 51:15Well, he's possessive. He's jealous. So he is of anyone who's in any way unfriend of Andy.
- 51:22It's getting more aggressive is what I'm saying.
- 51:25And I do think the first act and the first half of the film plays really well.
- 51:31Shane's death was awesome. Pug's death was great. Doreen's was tragic.
- 51:35And you see when Mike has to go see the mom. I mean, it's a good scene.
- 51:40But once you get the fucking misfits of the goodies and.
- 51:44The toy store fiasco it could I mean it makes sense for it to end in a toy store
- 51:50it just didn't it's the kids, like the young girl I can't even remember her name,
- 51:55it'll occur she turns into Rambo and you know it's obviously a take on the Max
- 51:59character from Stranger Things,
- 52:02and the sort of the other one who's like the comic
- 52:05foily I mean it's just like you know it's a checklist of all these types of
- 52:1180s nostalgia bait films that we've had so many of in series in recent years
- 52:16and it just irritated the life out of me and I certainly wasn't invested in
- 52:21any drama in fact I was looking at my watch wishing it would just hurry up an end.
- 52:26I it i mean the the the
- 52:29film changes tone pretty quickly here the
- 52:32whole fucking sequence and it's just i get
- 52:36what i know i don't get what they're trying to do when he scalps shane and then
- 52:40takes his face off and puts it as a gift to to andy and then andy calls his
- 52:47friends over to look at this and they're all going to help him hide the but
- 52:51if i was those two kids i'd be running to the placed in 30 seconds flat.
- 52:54Yeah, like in real life, what would happen?
- 52:57Yeah. You know what the best part of this film is? The clips of Texas Chainsaw
- 53:02Massacre 2 that they watch.
- 53:05Well, it's funny you bring that up. That is the reason why Chucky becomes the
- 53:10way he is. Takes his face off. Because they're laughing at it. Yeah.
- 53:13Well, no, because that, yes, that too, but they're laughing at this,
- 53:17right? They're laughing at this contuitous violence, the guy taking his face off.
- 53:20He sees this. so he's taking that in
- 53:23so when he gives her them he gives her he
- 53:26gives him the face he thinks he's giving them a gift and
- 53:28they'll enjoy it because they enjoyed it on the t yeah exactly and he's imitating
- 53:32leather face but no and and i do like that i it's the execution i agree i agree
- 53:39it's it is you there's i mean the way i just explained it people are probably
- 53:45like oh wow that does make a lot of sense. Yeah.
- 53:47Well, why can we really kind of get that kind of, it's it's down to,
- 53:53and I hate saying it because what I saw is on written word, it's the direction.
- 53:59I agree. That's the problem here. I totally agree.
- 54:01Lars is mishandling the script. Yes. And yeah, no, no, I totally agree,
- 54:06especially with that, you know, the letterface element.
- 54:09It's just very sort of generic.
- 54:12And then even whenever they try to do the Stranger Things thing,
- 54:16and I'm not a fan of stranger things they don't even pull that off and it just
- 54:19becomes even more irritating than stranger things which is saying something you know.
- 54:25Yeah, I think what they're trying to do here, the whole dinner sequence when
- 54:30he's trying to get the gift back from Doreen, that was terrible.
- 54:34I was like, this is, that was supposed to be, yeah, it was like, this was bad.
- 54:38You should, if you hit that head scene did happen, you throw the head away and walk away.
- 54:43Don't have the mom interfere. Oh, this is for Doreen. It's a gift.
- 54:46It was so bad. It just, it's contrived nonsense.
- 54:50So it is. It was like, yeah. And there's no tension here. And then there's no, there's no tension.
- 54:56We just talked about cult of Chucky having a lack of tension,
- 54:59but at least in it, you still had quirky characters that jump off the screen.
- 55:03You know, Chucky himself, Brad Dourif's voice, Fiona Dourif,
- 55:07you know, you had all of that.
- 55:09Here, we don't have that. Yeah, but Brad, well, yeah, but the difference between
- 55:13this and the cult of Chucky, the cult of Chucky had characters who were vulnerable
- 55:18and being manipulated by their vulnerability in a place where they should be being helped.
- 55:22And then Chucky's using that against him.
- 55:24That's what makes Chucky work and dark.
- 55:27This was trying to go completely dark. But they don't pull it off.
- 55:31Yeah, you did the first act. You had me, and then it just kind of,
- 55:35and then the whole ending sequence with the mascot and blood coming out of the
- 55:41head, blood flying on the kid's face.
- 55:44They're trying to make some kind of a statement about consumerism or something,
- 55:48Black Friday. I don't know.
- 55:50You know who did that spatter? you know who did this better this type of commentary
- 55:53Eli Roth in Thanksgiving Eli Roth yeah yeah Thanksgiving did a better job yep,
- 55:59yeah it's just they're trying to be edgy and clever and there's it's more it's
- 56:04more of a mishmash of ideas that they and they don't really pull any of them
- 56:08off that I can think of actually,
- 56:09I was bored out of my skull I just I just,
- 56:12I wasn't bored. I'm not going to say that. I mean, I tell people,
- 56:15give it a watch as well. There's no harm in giving it a watch.
- 56:19It's entertaining for what it is, but it's a Chucky film. Well, here's the thing.
- 56:23And it doesn't work just like, just like the seed and just like a bride.
- 56:28They don't work either. You know what would really have improved this film?
- 56:31If it wasn't connected in any way to the Chucky franchise, if it was wheelchair
- 56:36sex, what's that? Sorry.
- 56:37Nothing. Move on. If they, yeah, if this
- 56:40was in no way connected to the sorry I
- 56:44just caught what you said there in no way connected to
- 56:47the Chucky franchise and it was just perhaps even another sort of generic sort
- 56:54of killer doll but not connected to Chucky because you're always going to make
- 56:58those comparisons with the original and the original series and it just comes
- 57:04natural if you've seen the originals so,
- 57:06they wouldn't hold a candle to the original or the other ones,
- 57:11you know, the series overall.
- 57:13So they bought it even better off just leaving it. But yes, it's all about money
- 57:16and they want to cash in on the Chucky franchise.
- 57:20To be fair, Don Mancini and Brad Dourif and all have been completely professional
- 57:24and they haven't ranted about it on social media or anything.
- 57:27They've just kept their mouths shut and did their own story.
- 57:31So, yeah, this is just... No, there was a pretty big feud. Yes,
- 57:35I don't think it was done in public.
- 57:36I think it was done in the press. No, it was pretty big feud.
- 57:39I knew all of them. I mean, it was pretty big. It was pretty big.
- 57:43They were pissed off that they're stepping on our dirt toes. I agree with them.
- 57:47But no, I mean, I believe a remake should make, I think a remake should make
- 57:52it its own by keeping true of the source material.
- 57:55Don't put it all here at all. This one's a tough one.
- 57:58This is a tough one when you talk about the source material.
- 58:01Salem's Lot does it for me.
- 58:02I'm a big fan, as we know about that one. I still back that one up,
- 58:05but and Fright Night, but this one, the problem with this one,
- 58:10you did make it your own, so I got to give him credit for that by making it
- 58:14AI, about AI and Alexa. I am cool with that.
- 58:17The problem is that's what hurt it. It's because you're taking away the evil of the doll.
- 58:24I know that sounds silly, but I need the personality.
- 58:28I need the human aspect of it because the human aspect, the human aspect of
- 58:36it. It's not going to... Dude, it's a fucking robot.
- 58:38Let me finish. I'm trying to explain this. Go ahead.
- 58:43I was... What? Sith? You'll erase your personality.
- 58:51And because you take away the human aspect of it,
- 58:54Even though I credit it for going this route, because it is the good route to
- 58:59go with today's world, it hurts the film.
- 59:03Because you're taking away the personality of the doll.
- 59:06And you're taking away the human aspect of the doll. Because the human aspect
- 59:10of the doll makes it creepier, because the human aspect of the doll knows what it's doing. Yeah.
- 59:15And that's what makes that Chucky creepier. And I have to say, God love Mark Hamill.
- 59:20Mark Hamill did what he had to work with but he's got Braddorf not a mission and.
- 59:28Jesus even if he made the doll silent and just
- 59:31walking around creepy that would have been creepier than using the voice they
- 59:35did I just felt overall it was completely unnecessary and there was just no
- 59:42call for it you know the series at this point was still going strong so it was
- 59:47you know it was only like two years prior.
- 59:50Actually, this would have been in production shortly after Unculted Chucky had been released.
- 59:55So, you know, the series was still going strong. The original series,
- 59:58why? Just why? You know what I mean?
- 1:00:01Completely unnecessary and quite
- 1:00:03frankly. Yeah, I think that was Kirsten's argument. Why are we doing this?
- 1:00:09But it happened. It was gone. Came and went. It's not bad if it was just related to Chucky.
- 1:00:17It's funny thing is I watched it. I went to the theater and I saw it,
- 1:00:19I really enjoyed it. I thought it was clever.
- 1:00:21I was like, this is pretty good. But when you do a retrospective on a series
- 1:00:24and then you're going through all of them and then you see this one,
- 1:00:28you can understand why the hatred came to that one.
- 1:00:31So I've turned my views on this one. I was going in and appreciating it, liking it.
- 1:00:36But now I get, after going through this hours of Chucky, I can see where the
- 1:00:40fans are coming from. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:00:44And as a Chucky fan, I
- 1:00:47didn't go to see this because I feared that they would botch it and I only watched
- 1:00:51it because I watched it twice for the podcast and sadly from a personal level
- 1:00:56my fears were realised yeah I think it's just a shameless caisson by the studio and badly handled,
- 1:01:05All right. With that being said, it's time to wrap around. Now,
- 1:01:08we talked about the series here. We talked about the series here during this one, right? This one.
- 1:01:15And with the last one, with Colt. Now, the series lasted for three seasons.
- 1:01:20They canceled it. It's just, I guess they didn't really know where they're going to go with it.
- 1:01:24If you like to see follow-ups, you know, follow-ups, what happened to characters
- 1:01:30in the Chalice play movies, or any horror film, for that matter,
- 1:01:33I always wanted to see that.
- 1:01:34What happened like where are they now kind of
- 1:01:37a look and that's what and that's what and that's what the child's play
- 1:01:40series is modernizing it with dealing with
- 1:01:44transgender and the new generation of
- 1:01:47of non-binary non-binary and so forth i'm trying to say something that can cancel
- 1:01:55um but you you get my point it's quite good the lead actor and is very good
- 1:02:00and the animatronics are just so good with the Chucky.
- 1:02:04It just becomes the first season I really enjoy. Devin Swallow is always nice to see. I like him.
- 1:02:12And you have all these fun characters. But then it just goes right back to what I didn't like.
- 1:02:18If you guys, if you don't like the seed of Chucky or the bride of Chucky,
- 1:02:22do not watch the series because it goes right back into that trap.
- 1:02:26And I think that's what hurt it. I do think people got sick of it.
- 1:02:30The Seed of Shucky and Bride of Shucky were experimental to me,
- 1:02:33and they were one-offs to me.
- 1:02:36And I can see it, but seeing he realized why I have to change direction,
- 1:02:41and he went to The Curse and then to The Cult, two polar opposite directions
- 1:02:46of what we just got with The Seed and Bride.
- 1:02:48And I think that's what he did with the series. I think the problem is he can't fix that.
- 1:02:52Because if the series is still, there's, what, 10 episodes? how do you tweak
- 1:02:57three seasons of quirkiness into something like the cult and curse you can't,
- 1:03:02So I think the damage was done. I would say, to be fair to Mancini as well,
- 1:03:07although in a lot of people's eyes, including yours and Bride,
- 1:03:10the direction of Bride and Seed don't work, you know, with all the silliness
- 1:03:14and all, you know, the introduction of Tiffany and Glenn and Glenda.
- 1:03:19While Mancini then changes and goes back to the roots of the more scurrier stuff
- 1:03:23with Curse and Cult, he sort of still stays true to that storyline.
- 1:03:28It's not like he tries to erase it because we still have Tiffany.
- 1:03:32And, you know, we still have, you know, Jennifer Tilly and stuff.
- 1:03:35So at least he's trying to sort of balance it, you know, as he successful or not.
- 1:03:39And he did. Yeah. He saved his franchise.
- 1:03:42He killed it, but he also saved it. You know, I haven't seen all the series.
- 1:03:46I know, but that's, but that's my point.
- 1:03:48I mean, what I was saying was you can save a franchise in films. Yeah.
- 1:03:53By going, by rebooting and that's what he did with, with Curse of Cult.
- 1:03:57Yeah. You can't do that with the series.
- 1:03:59Yeah. You can't, because you've got 30 episodes already in, and you're still
- 1:04:03sticking with the same basics. The audience is getting bored now.
- 1:04:06You can't really change direction. There's a lot more R's of storytelling than
- 1:04:11an R and a half film. Exactly.
- 1:04:13You can't, yeah, you can't tweak three years, three seasons of a series,
- 1:04:18turn it serious under one episode.
- 1:04:21You can't. You got to tell another whole three series.
- 1:04:24And the studios weren't going to do that. But you know what? It was fun.
- 1:04:28I'd high, high recommend anyone who's a Chucky fan, but if you're definitely
- 1:04:32a fan of the quirkiness of Bride and Seed definitely give it a shot.
- 1:04:36What I didn't like about it actually, and I've only seen some episodes of the
- 1:04:39first season and other bits and pieces of it I fucking don't like teen dramas, never have done,
- 1:04:45even when I was a teen so it is quite teen drama-ish, you know like the OC or
- 1:04:49Beverly Hills 90210 but with a killer doll, but,
- 1:04:54it's, yeah I mean there's still some likable stuff in it, what I've seen of
- 1:04:57it, so give it a shot especially if you're a Chucky fan and haven't seen it yet,
- 1:05:01alright we're going to end our Chucky retrospective alright.
- 1:05:07So hi-de-ho yeah it's time to go but we're going to end with our rating we'll
- 1:05:14make this one quick this one's going a little longer so you go,
- 1:05:18you go alright I'm the host fuck yourself don't you fucking tell me where to go you past bastard,
- 1:05:23okay in order of favourite favourite
- 1:05:26first i would go with the original of course then curse
- 1:05:30of chucky then this is actually quite tricky to do i would say maybe in joint
- 1:05:38third place child's play three
- 1:05:41and cult of chucky then bride then seed and child's play two probably last,
- 1:05:50And then the reboot. Oh, no, no, no. Sorry, I'm not even including the reboot.
- 1:05:54That's not even on my radar.
- 1:05:55But yeah. Reboot should be on. Well, then it's definitely last.
- 1:05:58It's way, way at the bottom. Yeah. All right.
- 1:06:02I'm going to go with the reboot. What?
- 1:06:06I'm going with the... Going with Chalice Play. Okay. And then... Curse.
- 1:06:14Then... Okay. Believe it or not. Because I like the darker tone it took.
- 1:06:19Then I'm going with three military camp then I'm going two and then I'm going the reboot,
- 1:06:28you can put Seed and Bride in the same box I don't care right,
- 1:06:33yeah the reboot at least had competency the reboot had some good gore and it
- 1:06:39was darker somewhat darker that's the only reason the reboots beaten Seed and
- 1:06:42Bride because they're terrible films I think Seed and Bride are universe better
- 1:06:47than the new one, but anyway.
- 1:06:51I think you're an abomination, Chuckie!
- 1:06:56Hi, guys. We're wrapping this one up. We've got a special treat for you.
- 1:07:00We're going to start, we're going to talk the next two Gladiator films,
- 1:07:04one and two, and then we're going to dive into a couple westerns.
