Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: What's Next For Eagles After Slow Start To Free Agency?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan. Now it's Thursday, Adam. That means
- 0:20Speaker 1: the new league year technically started Wednesday at noon. However,
- 0:24Speaker 1: you and I even on podcasts and with Greg Cosell,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I've been talking about free agent signings for a couple
- 0:30Speaker 1: of days now because that's just the way it is.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We've gone through the first wave of free agency. We
- 0:35Speaker 1: did it with Greg. Greg had some really good breakdowns
- 0:38Speaker 1: of guys changing. I think my big takeaway was the
- 0:41Speaker 1: division the NFC East might actually be interesting for once,
- 0:44Speaker 1: because I know we've said that in the past. Of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Giant Yeah Giants. I think the Commanders have made
- 0:50Speaker 1: some decent moves. Are certainly younger, but like there's you're
- 0:52Speaker 1: right that there's some remains to be seen. And then
- 0:55Speaker 1: the Cowboys made some additions well, and then they went
- 0:57Speaker 1: and traded Odiggy Zoo because you know, they're changing their
- 1:01Speaker 1: defensive scheme now with Christian Parker. So really I would
- 1:04Speaker 1: just say this, the NFC East is pretty interesting, but
- 1:07Speaker 1: the Eagles are kind of like with the thumb twiddle
- 1:09Speaker 1: as they always do in free agency.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, look, no, they're there. This is what we told
- 1:12Speaker 2: people for the second three year are gonna be low
- 1:14Speaker 2: cash bends. Exactly what's happened now, I'd say it with
- 1:16Speaker 2: an asterisk. They need an edge rusher. Okay, they have
- 1:21Speaker 2: money to spend on edge rush so it could trade
- 1:24Speaker 2: for one, they could sign one or two. Uh. The
- 1:27Speaker 2: fact they need to to be honest with you in
- 1:29Speaker 2: fact that they will add too by training camp, whether
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's two in the draft to a free agency mix,
- 1:33Speaker 2: a mixture. They're going to have to do it and
- 1:34Speaker 2: don't have any depth. But yeah, it's it's gone like
- 1:37Speaker 2: we thought. But then there was the news that came out.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Bryce tof announced his retirement the egle and they are there. Boy,
- 1:45Speaker 2: he was their first like he's a perfect fit for
- 1:48Speaker 2: the uh the wide nine he is. He was their
- 1:51Speaker 2: first edge off the bench. And remember Mike cal Williams
- 1:54Speaker 2: their first round pick last year towards a cl Yep.
- 1:57Speaker 2: They have no depth, so they have a problem.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Man.
- 2:00Speaker 2: They have ke On White, who's former second rounder for
- 2:03Speaker 2: the Patriots, who was on the final years rookie deal.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It's an okay player, but they just don't have much,
- 2:08Speaker 2: so they didn't make the trade as you said, they
- 2:10Speaker 2: got Oc Digazua, who will be a good fit for
- 2:13Speaker 2: that system. They were they were there like nothing at dtackle.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So you see why teams make these trades. But yeah, Dallas,
- 2:19Speaker 2: as we move along here, they're shaking it up. Nude
- 2:22Speaker 2: defensive game thirty four front two overhangs. They have a
- 2:25Speaker 2: pass rusher problem. Don Donovan Azaraku had hip labor surgery.
- 2:29Speaker 2: He'll be out to the training camp at the very least.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's a bad Wow.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I didn't see that. Oh yeah, yeah, makes the Shawn Garry. Yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 1: oh they had to.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They don't have a they don't have a second edge
- 2:40Speaker 2: right now. They have they have a problem. Sam Williams
- 2:42Speaker 2: is their backup, but he's not starter right boy. There's
- 2:44Speaker 2: an edge rusher drought here.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Yeah, there really is. There is. By the way, the
- 2:48Speaker 1: men you mentioned the Niners. It's weird. You're right, they've
- 2:51Speaker 1: they didn't have any depth last year. They won twelve games.
- 2:54Speaker 1: They get a player like o Diggi Zua for the middle.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's good. Mike Evans I think will fit as long
- 2:59Speaker 1: as he's healthy. He's gonna fit that offense to a t.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So that's that's an interesting team to kind of watch.
- 3:04Speaker 1: They brought back Dray Greenlaw as well, so a lot
- 3:07Speaker 1: of things going on. I thought, Adam the Eagles, I
- 3:10Speaker 1: think we talked about this on the pod. I thought
- 3:13Speaker 1: for them, we both did that Bradley Chubb would be
- 3:15Speaker 1: a really efficient kind of signing because he got released,
- 3:19Speaker 1: so he wasn't gonna cost you in the compict formula.
- 3:21Speaker 1: He can pay him whatever he wanted. You can bring
- 3:23Speaker 1: him in and still have maneuverability to keep your picks
- 3:27Speaker 1: and do other things. But he wound up signing with
- 3:29Speaker 1: the Bills, And to me, that's just made that just
- 3:32Speaker 1: that just really shows you that how he's gonna have
- 3:35Speaker 1: to get creative here on the trade market, talk about
- 3:38Speaker 1: maybe Jonathan Grenard with the Vikings or something, because I
- 3:42Speaker 1: you know, and he's good at this obviously, and sometimes
- 3:45Speaker 1: we're good at figuring out who might be available. But
- 3:48Speaker 1: I'm struggling to see if you don't bring in a
- 3:50Speaker 1: Jonathan Garnard here or trade for him or where you go,
- 3:54Speaker 1: like what's behind door number two, three or four for
- 3:56Speaker 1: the Eagles. I mean, how he's good at it, but
- 3:58Speaker 1: I don't know right now. It seems thin right now
- 4:00Speaker 1: for a team that really needs an Edge rusher.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Well, the Edge Rush group that's left unrestricted free agents
- 4:06Speaker 2: who are straight free agents who were released. Cam Jordan's
- 4:10Speaker 2: out there. That's you know, that's he's near the end
- 4:12Speaker 2: of his career, gonna be Hall of Famer most likely
- 4:14Speaker 2: Joey Bosa in his thirties on the back nine. Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 2: Arnold Abacketty, we've talked about him before. He'd be a
- 4:22Speaker 2: third edge. He would not be a starter. Yep. Uh.
- 4:26Speaker 2: We love Kyle Vannoy in the show, but I mean
- 4:28Speaker 2: he's the guy's amazing. I don't know he found this
- 4:30Speaker 2: fountain of view if we talked about him a couple
- 4:31Speaker 2: weeks agohen we previewed the Edge Rushers. Yeah, the well
- 4:35Speaker 2: traveled Dante Fallard, dj Wanham, who's a decent third edge
- 4:40Speaker 2: of Carolina sees is a power and he doesn't fit.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Mike Daana was cut. He's a backup at this point.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Leonard Floyd Good, he'd be a third edge. Von Miller
- 4:51Speaker 2: will be Hall of Famers near the end. Triumph Man.
- 4:54Speaker 2: We loved him like four years ago. He just hasn't
- 4:56Speaker 2: done it. Yep. Derek Barnett, forget it, clowney.
- 5:01Speaker 1: No, I actually would almost think the clowney might make
- 5:05Speaker 1: a little bit of sense, but only if I would
- 5:08Speaker 1: only do it, And a lot of these guys I
- 5:09Speaker 1: were the same thing, only if I had like a all,
- 5:12Speaker 1: if I had Jalen Phillips, I was looking for number three.
- 5:15Speaker 2: But yeah, exactly right.
- 5:17Speaker 1: All the guys you are talking about are kind of
- 5:18Speaker 1: rotational guys. But honestly, right now, Jallex Hunt and Nolan Smith,
- 5:25Speaker 1: you've got an emerging guy in Jallex Hunt, but I
- 5:28Speaker 1: still don't I'm not ready to say he's your all
- 5:30Speaker 1: pro every single down edge either. And we know that
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's not Nolan Smith yet as well. He's been hurt
- 5:35Speaker 1: and he didn't really have a great year last year.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So right now it feels like the Eagles have a
- 5:39Speaker 1: bunch of threes.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Well Hunt, Hunt really came on the second half of
- 5:43Speaker 2: the season was was really impressive, but yeah, he's not
- 5:47Speaker 2: there yet. And Smith just can't stay healthy. He made
- 5:50Speaker 2: the strides in the second year and unfortunately Super Bowl.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Then last year hurt wasn't really much of a factor
- 5:58Speaker 2: that he's a good run defender, really proved against the run. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 2: other teams have told us, but it's it's a tough way. Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I honestly, if it's not Jonathan Grenard, who's underpaid at
- 6:11Speaker 2: nineteen million a season, I don't know where they get them.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And now they the Vikings have gotten their cap situations
- 6:18Speaker 2: straight now, so they don't have any to trade them.
- 6:20Speaker 2: They do have if they did trade them, they have
- 6:22Speaker 2: Dallas Turner who was the first round or two years ago.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Of course Miles and of course Andrew van Kinkel, who's
- 6:30Speaker 2: a VIC protege. Yeah, so that's what they got.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I wonder if they wind up signing Kyler Murray,
- 6:37Speaker 1: which is you know, the buzzy Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:39Speaker 1: that's I mean, it makes sense, right, I wonder. I
- 6:42Speaker 1: think you make a great point, like they're if they
- 6:45Speaker 1: think Kyler Murray can give them like, you know, B
- 6:48Speaker 1: plus level quarterback play within their system, because Kevin O'Connell's
- 6:51Speaker 1: got a very quarterback friendly system, then they should think
- 6:54Speaker 1: that they've got a pretty good overall team and maybe
- 6:57Speaker 1: not want to trade Jonathan Gernard because they have a
- 7:00Speaker 1: pretty decent roster. Uh, they can compete with anybody. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: the Eagles played them when they were really really hurt
- 7:06Speaker 1: this past year, and it's not that it was a
- 7:08Speaker 1: it got to be a lopsided win, but there were
- 7:10Speaker 1: some struggles there early on in the game. So I
- 7:12Speaker 1: think they're they're a well coached team. Floors is great,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Like they don't have to, to your point, get rid
- 7:18Speaker 1: of that guy unless the.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Only problem with that team is now they cut both
- 7:21Speaker 2: of their starting tackles who found other homes. Jonathan Allen
- 7:24Speaker 2: was cut found a team and so did Hargrave. Yep. Uh,
- 7:28Speaker 2: so they have to replace those guys. They need a
- 7:31Speaker 2: third receiver Jalen Naylor. I cannot believe the contract he got.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Wow, that was there's there's something line one that Christian
- 7:41Speaker 1: Kirk line too.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, look there there there got mid level free agency,
- 7:45Speaker 2: like like I got ahold of the uh breakdown for
- 7:48Speaker 2: Johan Dotson. I cannot believe they gave him guaranteed money
- 7:51Speaker 2: in near to Atlanta. Why would you do that?
- 7:54Speaker 1: The guys at three, Well, just what you must see
- 7:58Speaker 1: something that Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 2: He's probably gonna have, he's probably gonna start.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Yeah, because they really don't have, right they they moved
- 8:04Speaker 1: on from Mooney, right, they.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Took right now, he's the starter. Sakias. They brought Sakias back.
- 8:09Speaker 2: He's not a starter Ton Dotson right now, unless they
- 8:11Speaker 2: draft someone, it's gonna start opposite London. I saw there's
- 8:14Speaker 2: got to be someone on that new coaching staff that
- 8:18Speaker 2: liked him. I don't know who.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I don't know who it is, but yeah, they're gonna
- 8:22Speaker 1: they're gonna draft somebody. But then they're gonna right, but
- 8:26Speaker 1: they're gonna run the same issue. If you draft an
- 8:28Speaker 1: outside corner. We'll get to the Eagles in a minute, people,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I promise, But I like talking about this stuff. If
- 8:32Speaker 1: you draft a really good, top flight corner to play
- 8:35Speaker 1: alongside Drake London, who is a straight ex one of
- 8:37Speaker 1: the best in the league, and then what are you
- 8:39Speaker 1: doing with Dotson? Again, he's back to he's not a
- 8:42Speaker 1: slot He's not a natural slot guy. So he's there.
- 8:44Speaker 1: He's your number three wide receiver who's going to be
- 8:47Speaker 1: a Z. But if you draft well and get a
- 8:49Speaker 1: good guy, then it's gonna be hard to get Dots
- 8:52Speaker 1: on the field. But then again, also Stefanski is a
- 8:54Speaker 1: twelve personnel guy, so he'll probably wind up getting another
- 8:57Speaker 1: tight end to pair with Pitts and they may not
- 8:59Speaker 1: useing them or three receivers much.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that Dotson got two years, fifteen million. They fully
- 9:06Speaker 2: guaranteed ten million at signing. I'm just you could have
- 9:09Speaker 2: pushed member with a feather that one. Yeah, I just
- 9:14Speaker 2: who that's I know on your point, I thought the
- 9:19Speaker 2: same thing. But I'm like they must have thought like
- 9:22Speaker 2: with Christian Kirk. I will never forget checking on his
- 9:28Speaker 2: market and maybe the Eagles were mentioned. I forget whenever
- 9:30Speaker 2: he signed there with Jacksonville. But his agent was telling
- 9:33Speaker 2: clubs that, hey man, I got this deal and forget it.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I'm not We're not going there. And they thought he's bluffing.
- 9:38Speaker 2: The Christian Kirk there was. There were a lot of
- 9:40Speaker 2: teams that loved him for free agency. Doug Love Peterson
- 9:42Speaker 2: loved him. I don't know why.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I think he was a good player. He's a good player,
- 9:47Speaker 1: just nobody thought him at that time. I think it
- 9:50Speaker 1: was twenty two million a year, right, No one thought
- 9:51Speaker 1: of him a thing like number one player.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I mean, I'm gonna look that one up.
- 9:56Speaker 1: He's like a good thousand yard receiver. If he's like
- 9:58Speaker 1: one of your top two target, it's on a team,
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Kirk Kirk got no was a little less, but it
- 10:05Speaker 2: was ridiculous. Four years seventy two million, eighteen a year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: That's still for that. That was like five years ago, correct.
- 10:15Speaker 2: It was. It was March of of six of sixteen
- 10:22Speaker 2: of twenty two, March sixteenth, March sixteenth of twenty two,
- 10:25Speaker 2: twenty years ago.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, four years ago. And that's what the market
- 10:28Speaker 1: was four years ago. That was the top of the market.
- 10:30Speaker 1: That's unbelievable anyway, all right, so we'll move on. We'll
- 10:35Speaker 1: continue to talk about the Eagles. Some interesting things going
- 10:38Speaker 1: on with them, both from guys that they brought in
- 10:41Speaker 1: and guys that they already have. I believe we did
- 10:44Speaker 1: address the Johnny Mont signing in the last podcast or
- 10:48Speaker 1: with Greg He's they're blocking tight end, Adam. Their whole
- 10:51Speaker 1: tight end room is really wonky right now. Right, They
- 10:54Speaker 1: have Johnny Mont, They bring back Grant Calcaterra on a
- 10:57Speaker 1: one year deal the as of the time of us
- 11:01Speaker 1: recording this, which I feel like I'm gonna have to
- 11:02Speaker 1: say a couple of times now over the next few days.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard Thursday Night Yeah, Yes, Yes, Thursday Night Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 1: As Thursday Night Gotard, I think the deadline's approaching again
- 11:15Speaker 1: for his Do you have a better way to articulately.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I would be I would be very surprised if we
- 11:21Speaker 2: don't have a resolution by the end of the weekend
- 11:23Speaker 2: where he's going to sign, whether he's back in Philly.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Who we spite all of it. I don't know where
- 11:27Speaker 2: this stuff came back. That there was no way he
- 11:29Speaker 2: was coming back at this total nonsense. We told people
- 11:32Speaker 2: that we told but they are keeping in touch with
- 11:37Speaker 2: Eagles and I'll make a decision. Uh. The one that
- 11:41Speaker 2: stuns me is David and Joke, who's still out there.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I know he's had an injury history. Yeah, someone's getting
- 11:46Speaker 2: a bargain wherever he goes. The chief is available, man,
- 11:49Speaker 2: you gotta someone's got an.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm struggling to make sense in general, adam of the
- 11:54Speaker 1: tight end market, because yes, Goddard's still technically available, and
- 11:58Speaker 1: the joke who's available John new Smith, who can serve
- 12:02Speaker 1: a purpose in a offense that you need a pass
- 12:04Speaker 1: catching tight end. I believe both.
- 12:06Speaker 2: He does both.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Actually, yeah he can. He's pretty good him as a
- 12:10Speaker 1: pretty good option for the Eagles if they lose got.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It is you can thank Arthur Smith for ruining that.
- 12:14Speaker 2: So this is this is typical of Arthur Smith. Right,
- 12:17Speaker 2: they extend his contract last year. He doesn't get him
- 12:20Speaker 2: in the football. The guy now has coached him in
- 12:22Speaker 2: three places. He doesn't have to get him the football.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, excuse me, it's true.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Tennessee Okay, yep, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. He was coming off
- 12:32Speaker 2: a careera with Miami. What are you doing? It's just
- 12:35Speaker 2: bad coaching.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Indeed, where's Arthur's heett? Ohio State?
- 12:38Speaker 2: Now State? Okay?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Well, good thing? John who doesn't have to go back.
- 12:41Speaker 2: With Matt Patricia former Eagle legendary coach.
- 12:44Speaker 1: That's right? Uh Mo, Ali Cox I believe is still
- 12:48Speaker 1: still he's a block. But at this point you're looking
- 12:51Speaker 1: for for some guys with starting experience. I mean, I'm
- 12:53Speaker 1: not a big Will Disley guy, and I know he
- 12:56Speaker 1: got bench, but he has played in this kind of
- 12:58Speaker 1: an offense before, so.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Why so.
- 13:02Speaker 1: So that's why I'm kind of confused about this market.
- 13:04Speaker 1: There are a couple of guys out there who can
- 13:06Speaker 1: who can do some things, and yet guys like Foster
- 13:08Speaker 1: Moreau and Jack Stole have signed, but those guys haven't.
- 13:11Speaker 2: So very it's been a weird free agency, man, as
- 13:14Speaker 2: a matter of fact, and we saw us a little
- 13:16Speaker 2: bit last year, a lot of guys who would not
- 13:19Speaker 2: typically sign to the third week freeny because they're there
- 13:22Speaker 2: bottom of the barrel of top guy of available free agents,
- 13:27Speaker 2: they're signing this week. I don't know. I don't know,
- 13:32Speaker 2: but there are a lot of good football players left,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and man, the leverage goes to the clubs when you
- 13:36Speaker 2: get to the second week. The players of zero leverage
- 13:39Speaker 2: like zero especially better sign, you know, right, So.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Here's the situation. Then the Eagles at tight end are
- 13:47Speaker 1: either going to figure it out with Dallas Goddard and
- 13:49Speaker 1: then your room is going to look like Goddard and
- 13:51Speaker 1: Calcatara and mount and we'll see what happens with Cam
- 13:54Speaker 1: Latu those are like and then.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I mean he's on the rosters. Bring into the season
- 14:00Speaker 2: and then they.
- 14:00Speaker 1: For sure will draft somebody. So it looks okay, there
- 14:03Speaker 1: you got well.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You know what hang on? I would say theoretically yes,
- 14:09Speaker 2: but I think it, but go ahead, it certainly won't.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I mean, bring Goddard, black Wave zero to do with
- 14:15Speaker 2: them if they wanted to draft, if they want to
- 14:17Speaker 2: tight end, they take one in the first round. I mean,
- 14:19Speaker 2: if they think there's the kid from Morgan, if they
- 14:21Speaker 2: want to draft it tight end the first round. They
- 14:23Speaker 2: draft the tight end. But what I'm saying is they
- 14:26Speaker 2: have so many needs this season. As I said last week,
- 14:29Speaker 2: I don't remember in the history of our show. This
- 14:31Speaker 2: is year nine, there are very few positions where they
- 14:34Speaker 2: don't need least depth or a starter. You know, it's
- 14:37Speaker 2: it depends on the position, right. I just have a
- 14:40Speaker 2: lot of needs. It's just it's kind of odd, but that's.
- 14:43Speaker 1: One of them. I mean, if if we take them
- 14:45Speaker 1: at their word, which they they they are they should be.
- 14:48Speaker 1: They draft for the future, not for the immediate.
- 14:50Speaker 2: No, no, I drafted.
- 14:51Speaker 1: They need a tight end as badly as they've ever
- 14:54Speaker 1: needed one, So they do well.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Look, if God doesn't come back and they don't sign
- 14:59Speaker 2: in Djoko, you don't want to say they have to
- 15:02Speaker 2: draft tight end early, but what choice do they have.
- 15:04Speaker 2: They'd have to wait for the cut of what I
- 15:07Speaker 2: call the NFL's version of the NBA buy out market,
- 15:10Speaker 2: the cut market. Ye, you need it, you need it
- 15:13Speaker 2: that at starting tight end, No, not even close. If
- 15:15Speaker 2: no one is remotely close to being a starter, correct,
- 15:17Speaker 2: especially is a is a maybe he'll play a third
- 15:21Speaker 2: of the snaps, good for blocking purposes. If a lot
- 15:24Speaker 2: too makes it, that's all he'll do. They'll my sense
- 15:27Speaker 2: is that this staff will understand how to use him
- 15:30Speaker 2: half of the tight ends. Coach will understand how to
- 15:32Speaker 2: They're not going to ask him make cross blocks, right, nonsense.
- 15:34Speaker 2: There was some bad coaching last season, terrible the stuff
- 15:37Speaker 2: that the stuff that they asked these guys to do
- 15:39Speaker 2: was embarrassing and we would point it out, what are
- 15:41Speaker 2: they doing here on inside the table of Cosel right
- 15:44Speaker 2: and and our Patreon members asked Greg that they go.
- 15:46Speaker 2: He just he thought it was too difficult, you know.
- 15:50Speaker 1: All right, So that's the state. We'll see what they
- 15:52Speaker 1: do there now. As for Riek Wolland, you know we
- 15:55Speaker 1: talked about him also with Greg cosso he's got a
- 15:57Speaker 1: little bit more intel. What have you I'll share after,
- 16:00Speaker 1: but I'll let you go first. What have you learned
- 16:02Speaker 1: in the coming days.
- 16:03Speaker 2: About Basically, he was looking like a superstar year one
- 16:09Speaker 2: coming out of ut San Antonio, Okay. In twenty twenty
- 16:12Speaker 2: two is a fifth rounder for the Seahawks. He just
- 16:16Speaker 2: was phenomenal. He did play with an injury. Year two,
- 16:22Speaker 2: he missed a big chunk of training camp and the
- 16:26Speaker 2: regression started in year three in twenty twenty four, and
- 16:29Speaker 2: the bottom dropped out. He was very available. I was
- 16:33Speaker 2: joking with you earlier this week. I mean, they were
- 16:35Speaker 2: so willing to move him. They didn't really have a
- 16:38Speaker 2: replacement because Josh Job and Witherspoon ready, they played three
- 16:42Speaker 2: their nickel team, they played three corners. They really didn't
- 16:45Speaker 2: have a fourth corner who they could play. They they
- 16:48Speaker 2: didn't care because they knew theyren't going to resign him.
- 16:51Speaker 2: He regressed significantly. Now sometimes a change of scenior he
- 16:55Speaker 2: could help a player. Talked to a receivers coach who
- 16:57Speaker 2: went up against him. Their team targeted him. If their
- 17:01Speaker 2: quarterback would have played better, they probably would have burned
- 17:03Speaker 2: him a bunch. This I think this game might have
- 17:06Speaker 2: been the regular season. But yeah, there's talent there though.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I mean again, he there's been a point in this
- 17:12Speaker 2: in his career where you go, wow, round six to four.
- 17:17Speaker 2: He's got everything you want, but he's just his play
- 17:20Speaker 2: has dropped also significantly. Yeah, you know, if you're the Eagles,
- 17:23Speaker 2: you're glad you only signed him for one year and
- 17:25Speaker 2: now they we haven't got the breakdown yet on the contract.
- 17:28Speaker 2: But again it's only one year and it's not going
- 17:30Speaker 2: to stop them from doing anything. But I also was
- 17:34Speaker 2: joking with our patron members that this is the kind
- 17:36Speaker 2: of player that how he likes flashy and stuff, and yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 2: he's got exactly how he calls it twitchy. If they're
- 17:45Speaker 2: in November and they haven't drafted a corner in the
- 17:47Speaker 2: first or second round, if he's killing it, if he's
- 17:50Speaker 2: turned his career around. They got Roy Anderson, the quarterbacks coach.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Has some discipline would shock as if he extended They
- 17:56Speaker 2: didn't do it this past November, but they've extended contracts
- 17:59Speaker 2: before in November.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yes, there's such a high ceiling, but there's also a
- 18:03Speaker 1: low floor for him if he does not correct some
- 18:07Speaker 1: of the things that have that have plagued him. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: some of it is not like you know how we
- 18:12Speaker 1: talk about Killia Ringo and you're just built a certain way.
- 18:15Speaker 1: So he's always struggled to throttle down. It's hard to correct,
- 18:18Speaker 1: okay with Wooln you know. And I spoke to a
- 18:21Speaker 1: personnel person whose job was to watch his tape for
- 18:24Speaker 1: free agency for his team, and he corroborated a lot
- 18:27Speaker 1: of things that are out there that we've reported already,
- 18:31Speaker 1: but with Woolen, he is way too penalty prone. He
- 18:35Speaker 1: actually led the Seahawks in penalties, and those when cornerbacks
- 18:41Speaker 1: lead your team in penalties, that's bad for your defense
- 18:43Speaker 1: because a lot of that is usually pass interference or
- 18:46Speaker 1: defensive holding. Those are automatic first downs or automatic you know,
- 18:50Speaker 1: spot fouls all the way down the fields. It's really
- 18:53Speaker 1: difficult when you get hit with those kind of penalties.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You know, it's one thing if you're going off accidentally,
- 18:59Speaker 1: all that sucks, but you don't see that ht. But yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: those kind of penalties are killer. And for whatever reason,
- 19:06Speaker 1: despite his speed right in long arms, this personal person
- 19:10Speaker 1: told me he really struggles with the deep ball, which
- 19:14Speaker 1: is surprising. I mean, you have faster long arms, but
- 19:17Speaker 1: I try to figure out is that a ball tracking thing?
- 19:19Speaker 2: So yeah, look, Wille's talented. They're not done a corner
- 19:22Speaker 2: and I haven't close to done a corner. They have
- 19:24Speaker 2: a two started for now, they don't have their third
- 19:26Speaker 2: or fourth corner. I mean, they just they have a
- 19:29Speaker 2: lot of work to do it. This is just one
- 19:31Speaker 2: of those years where you look at it, Ringo, they
- 19:32Speaker 2: don't play them on Defensejcrane Bennett is on the roster,
- 19:37Speaker 2: but they don't know about him. And you know, Coop
- 19:41Speaker 2: can play corner. He has play corner. Mac McWilliams was
- 19:44Speaker 2: mostly inactive in the season. They don't they don't know
- 19:47Speaker 2: who their third and fourth corners are. So a lot
- 19:49Speaker 2: of work to do it at the cornerback position for
- 19:50Speaker 2: the Philadelphiggles.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And you know, so you throw that in. We talked
- 19:55Speaker 1: about edge, we're talking about tight end and safety because
- 19:59Speaker 1: what what's the plan there? Because Marcus EPs is a
- 20:02Speaker 1: free agent. Re Blanketship's already gone. Sydney Brown is not playing,
- 20:05Speaker 1: and you.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Will not fight. He will not play on defense unless
- 20:09Speaker 2: see this reminds me I used to. You might remember
- 20:12Speaker 2: this was one year watching Chris Maragos had to play
- 20:16Speaker 2: for whatever reason, the Eagles lost a bunch of safeties.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I remember that, yep.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And all I see is number forty two was played.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Literally you want to talk about single high he was
- 20:25Speaker 2: in Camden. Okay, he was so far back because he
- 20:29Speaker 2: did he just stated, at want him on the field
- 20:30Speaker 2: other than special teams. Right, Sidney Brown, it's like for
- 20:33Speaker 2: them to play on defense, it's got to be like
- 20:36Speaker 2: no one's literally available on the roster like, they will
- 20:38Speaker 2: not put them up there.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I mean, Andre Sam's probably looking around right now said
- 20:41Speaker 1: I kind of shot here, Maneah he does.
- 20:43Speaker 2: I mean he's a force safety type. So right now,
- 20:47Speaker 2: obviously mccooba, they don't know. It's Sidney Brown, doesn't factor
- 20:51Speaker 2: he's a forced safety macioc Williams really was not cross trained.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Michael Carter definitely will We reported that at the time
- 20:58Speaker 2: when they made the trade, they were going to cross
- 21:00Speaker 2: train and back at safety where he played at Duke
- 21:03Speaker 2: under well Joe Casper, the DB's coach who was promoted
- 21:06Speaker 2: to DB's coach, he was with him at Duke for
- 21:08Speaker 2: a time, so he obviously knows him. But Joe Douglas
- 21:12Speaker 2: drafted him. By the way, Joe Douglas is on the
- 21:14Speaker 2: Eagles personnel staff, so they have an insight on him.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So we'll see what happens. But they have to dress
- 21:19Speaker 2: that position. There's no question. It is remarkable. We'll redo
- 21:24Speaker 2: on our Monday morning show. We're going to do the coaches.
- 21:26Speaker 2: We'll go over the coaching staff, the new coaching staff
- 21:28Speaker 2: on Monday, and we're going to reshuffle the needs. I'm
- 21:31Speaker 2: sure they'll add some more players over the weekend. They
- 21:33Speaker 2: have so many I think my head's gonna split.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they theoretically need like two safeties to be.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Honest, well they do know they honestly they need a
- 21:42Speaker 2: starting safety and the third safety. Let Andre sam and
- 21:46Speaker 2: Michael Carter could be a third safety, you know, yeah,
- 21:49Speaker 2: he could do that and if if, if they're totally
- 21:52Speaker 2: shut out for the draft, maybe compete for the starting job.
- 21:54Speaker 2: But they'll add more. They have they have. They haven't
- 21:57Speaker 2: spent a lot of money. By the way, they've spend.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Remember they've got all that money that they saved from
- 22:01Speaker 2: not resigning Jalen Phillips, so they've got they've they've got money,
- 22:06Speaker 2: and they budgeted money for corner anyway, so they've they've
- 22:09Speaker 2: addressed it. Ye Edge, we talked about de tackle. They're good.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Uh they' o Jomo Davis, Carter, Byron Young and Ty
- 22:18Speaker 2: Robinson needs to have a good offseason. Yep. So that's
- 22:20Speaker 2: pretty much their defense. Resigned Calcuterra and they resigned braid Man.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Four years is four years, uh and seventeen million. He's
- 22:31Speaker 2: he's back. You know. I was looking into it Wednesday,
- 22:34Speaker 2: I was like, wait a minute, what happened? We haven't
- 22:35Speaker 2: even talked about braid Man, where like he hasn't visited.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Not that most players don't visit anymore, that's sort of
- 22:40Speaker 2: old school. Next thing I know is I got a
- 22:42Speaker 2: I got an update that he's resigning four years. It
- 22:45Speaker 2: looked great, all right, Good for him. Yeah, good good player,
- 22:48Speaker 2: Andrew and I had him on it on our show
- 22:51Speaker 2: at Chicky and Heat. He was great, man, he told
- 22:53Speaker 2: he told some great stories. Good that yeah, back, good,
- 22:56Speaker 2: good for him.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Good for him to get that deal too. He's been good.
- 23:00Speaker 1: As far as the guys that they've lost, not too
- 23:03Speaker 1: many big deals. Like Sam Howell goes to the Cowboys,
- 23:05Speaker 1: No big deal, he barely he didn't play. But they
- 23:08Speaker 1: do need a number three quarterback. And I would think
- 23:09Speaker 1: even if they draft a kid, they always like to
- 23:12Speaker 1: seem to have a veteran even more older than say
- 23:15Speaker 1: Tanner McKee going into year four. But I don't I
- 23:17Speaker 1: don't know if they're gonna have a fourth quarterback, but
- 23:19Speaker 1: they certainly don't have an eight like that, like a
- 23:22Speaker 1: veteran beyond a backup veteran beyond Tanner McKee. But I
- 23:26Speaker 1: don't think they're.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Gonna have They'll have three you have to have three
- 23:29Speaker 2: for training camp, so they'll add somebody, and it could
- 23:31Speaker 2: be heck, it could be an undrafted free agent. You
- 23:33Speaker 2: never know. Could be maybe if Carson Strong was to
- 23:36Speaker 2: come out of retirement and I'm.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Showking Johnson now that he's back with the Yeah, you
- 23:43Speaker 1: can't do that, as you learned with Matt Naggie.
- 23:46Speaker 2: That's right, it was hilarious.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Uh yeah, no big yeah, no big loss on on
- 23:52Speaker 1: on Matt Pryor. He just he didn't really play. He
- 23:54Speaker 1: had a good camp, but he didn't play well.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, he saw with the Cardinals Brett Toath song with
- 23:59Speaker 2: the Niners, the unsigned f Agens or aj Dillon Ben
- 24:03Speaker 2: van Zuman was not tenor as free agent as expected.
- 24:06Speaker 2: They were RFA tenders are not guaranteed even at signing,
- 24:11Speaker 2: but just the contract would have been way higher than
- 24:14Speaker 2: the the minimum he would have gotten. Fred Johnson's out there,
- 24:16Speaker 2: gotter as you mentioned, Kylon Grantson, a good special teams player. Yeah,
- 24:19Speaker 2: still out there, yep.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And I believe EPs is still a free agent too, right.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Yeah, So on defense BG, of course BG's not retiring
- 24:27Speaker 2: Cobo Concroe, Duey Jackson and Marcus Epps as you mentioned
- 24:31Speaker 2: guys have signed filps with Carolina. Zezogelari got to deal
- 24:34Speaker 2: with Atlanta, Joshua with Miami, Dean Nikobe got a great
- 24:39Speaker 2: contract with the Raiders, and read blanket ship with the Texans.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yes, by the way, the Eagles not paying that blanketship.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Who came in? I don't know what the market was
- 24:49Speaker 1: going to be, but some people thought around ten million.
- 24:52Speaker 1: He came in around with an eight and a.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Half or something in a quarter maybe.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it shows you where the Eagles are at with
- 24:58Speaker 1: what you know. You mentioned the who did who did that?
- 25:01Speaker 2: That?
- 25:01Speaker 1: Joe Douglas drafted Michael Carter the second. He also drafted
- 25:04Speaker 1: Ashton Davis. Who's out there? I don't know if a.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Who Yeah, kind of overdrafted Who's Jets Dolphins? Right? Uh?
- 25:13Speaker 2: Donovan Wilson's out there, is actually starting.
- 25:15Speaker 1: He's a good player, he is, but I feel like
- 25:18Speaker 1: he's starting to get a little long in the tooth.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And that Dallas secondary last year was pretty bad. I
- 25:27Speaker 1: thought Apps actually played at a decent level. It seems
- 25:31Speaker 1: that it seems that this You're right, Donovan Wilson's a
- 25:33Speaker 1: better player. It does seem that guys and I'll throw
- 25:36Speaker 1: a Dory Jackson to the mix. I think when you're
- 25:38Speaker 1: playing with Cooper De Jean and Quina Mitchell, and you know,
- 25:44Speaker 1: when Makubo was healthy was starting to play well, I
- 25:46Speaker 1: think it helps those guys obviously to have better talent.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So I could actually see. I think you make a
- 25:50Speaker 1: good point. Could Wilson come in here and hold the
- 25:52Speaker 1: fourth down for a year? Absolutely absolutely, and I would
- 25:55Speaker 1: I wouldn't feel bad about the secondary if that.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Were the case. So the work they have to do
- 25:59Speaker 2: is mostly on defense. But but one thing I do
- 26:02Speaker 2: want to say is they need two veteran offensive linemen
- 26:05Speaker 2: right now. Your backups are Cam Williams, who played in
- 26:09Speaker 2: one game, is not ready to be that first attack
- 26:11Speaker 2: off the bench yet. Willie Lampkin, who's on I R.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Drew Kendall, who I had a I had a college
- 26:18Speaker 2: scout tell me it's literally he said in his Scott Report.
- 26:23Speaker 2: He turned for the team he works for. He said,
- 26:24Speaker 2: not a guard at our level is not strong enough. Yeah,
- 26:28Speaker 2: and he's. And I said, well, what if he gets wrong, goes,
- 26:29Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. He's just course, strength isn't there. He goes.
- 26:32Speaker 2: He's he's absolutely center he's not built like his dad.
- 26:34Speaker 2: We both talked. He and I talked about his dad,
- 26:36Speaker 2: Pete Kendall, Yes, center and guard.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I will say that the new offense of the horizontal
- 26:41Speaker 1: style of blocking though, does tend to lean toward underside
- 26:45Speaker 1: like the athletic athletic.
- 26:46Speaker 2: But man, he he just didn't think this guy could
- 26:48Speaker 2: play in any system as a guard. And Miles Hinton,
- 26:52Speaker 2: who's not played, So yeah, they don't. They they're just
- 26:54Speaker 2: stay up problems with death. But you could. There's no
- 26:57Speaker 2: time limit. You could you just have for training? Can't
- 26:59Speaker 2: you have? Have two veterans? Yeah?
- 27:01Speaker 1: And on that note, you know, while we're talking about
- 27:03Speaker 1: the offensive line, the reason why you need these veterans
- 27:06Speaker 1: is because not only were they banged up last year. Now,
- 27:09Speaker 1: Landon Dickerson is the latest to go down to Columbia
- 27:12Speaker 1: Midie and like Cam Jurgens did try to get better
- 27:15Speaker 1: treatment and then of course he's got this strange contract revision.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Now it didn't he didn't take that much. It's not
- 27:24Speaker 1: like they game a huge pay cut, but they there's
- 27:27Speaker 1: clear concern about whether he's going to be functional or
- 27:29Speaker 1: not after three years, which he himself basically admitted by
- 27:32Speaker 1: almost retiring at him. Hey, I know a lot of
- 27:34Speaker 1: you out there are just like me. You either travel
- 27:37Speaker 1: a lot for work or you got a back to
- 27:39Speaker 1: work policy and you're always out of the house, but
- 27:42Speaker 1: your family is still home. Well, I feel really secure
- 27:46Speaker 1: with my family at home because I've got simply Safe

- 28:40Speaker 1: Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines, We've
- 28:45Speaker 1: all been there, But when it comes to your cannabis,

- 29:34Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 29:38Speaker 1: one and up.
- 29:39Speaker 2: So they cut off the twenty twenty eight years. So
- 29:43Speaker 2: he's got two years off this year and next year
- 29:45Speaker 2: he was gonna make thirty nine million in cash, so
- 29:48Speaker 2: they cut it down by like three million, which is
- 29:51Speaker 2: very little item.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It's like, we're to come up with that number, right, like,
- 29:56Speaker 1: because I have.
- 29:57Speaker 2: The all contracts, so he had, he's a veteran minimum salary,
- 30:01Speaker 2: he's he's got an option, a non guaranteed option bonus
- 30:04Speaker 2: of just under eighteen million, So it comes to nineteen million,
- 30:08Speaker 2: and then twenty twenty seven unless they've touched twenty seven,
- 30:11Speaker 2: which they could have. Maybe that's the year they touched
- 30:13Speaker 2: it again, the veteran minimum in twenty twenty seven plus
- 30:17Speaker 2: a non guaranteed well non guaranteed, no option bonus. So
- 30:21Speaker 2: maybe I don't know what year he took the shave,
- 30:23Speaker 2: but yeah, it's it's I understand he didn't play well.
- 30:25Speaker 2: He had a bad year last year. I'm just being
- 30:27Speaker 2: honest with you based on tape. This is from the
- 30:29Speaker 2: people you and I spoke to, not him. But look,
- 30:33Speaker 2: they shaved a year off the fact that they're doing this.
- 30:36Speaker 2: They didn't do it because he had a good year. Folks,
- 30:38Speaker 2: you don't do that. Nobody takes a pickup when they're
- 30:40Speaker 2: playing well. That's just what it works. No player in
- 30:42Speaker 2: the NFL history is taking a pickup when they played well.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Then I know of you know, maybe you could think
- 30:46Speaker 2: of one. I can't think of one. No, Nope.
- 30:48Speaker 1: But usually it doesn't work that way.
- 30:49Speaker 2: It doesn't work that life. So but you know, hopefully
- 30:52Speaker 2: Landon got it through the treatment. This is a life decision,
- 30:55Speaker 2: you know. I tried to explain that when Jurgens went
- 30:57Speaker 2: down to get his treatment, it was just for now,
- 30:59Speaker 2: it's for the future. Sure, he's you're looking at both
- 31:02Speaker 2: players who uh Dick Dickerson more than cam Way more surgeries.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Then you know, you saw what happened with Max Crosby.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Crosby actually went on I knew was eight and he
- 31:13Speaker 2: confirmed it. He did interview then with Colin Coward. He
- 31:16Speaker 2: talked about it. I was like, wow, you know, and
- 31:20Speaker 2: he plays way too many snaps and these these and
- 31:22Speaker 2: by the way, offensive lineman, they don't rotate.
- 31:24Speaker 1: No, they don't get a breath. And this team runs
- 31:27Speaker 1: the ball a ton.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Yeah that's not changing this West Coast offense. What before
- 31:33Speaker 2: we get out of here, My last point is the
- 31:35Speaker 2: reason why you're you're seeing Cokatara back. Now he's gonna
- 31:38Speaker 2: be more used. They're gonna they're gonna really limit him
- 31:42Speaker 2: as a blocker, like way more than the other that
- 31:44Speaker 2: the other staff did, which was the other staff did
- 31:46Speaker 2: not do a good job with them understanding how to
- 31:48Speaker 2: use him. You'll see Mont You'll see a lot too
- 31:52Speaker 2: if he makes it. Got whoever, if god Her comes back,
- 31:55Speaker 2: if it's in Djoku, he can block, got Her can block.
- 31:59Speaker 2: If it's won the draft, I'm sure that God can block.
- 32:02Speaker 2: You're You're rarely going to see Calcutt block here. He's
- 32:05Speaker 2: here to catch the football. That's absolutely.
- 32:07Speaker 1: That's called using your your personnel to its strength. Somebody
- 32:11Speaker 1: you're definitely not going to see, at least for a while,
- 32:13Speaker 1: is John Campbell. Uh Vic Fangio had told the media
- 32:16Speaker 1: the other day at uh where was he? What was
- 32:18Speaker 1: that for for me? Neil was getting honored, right, Yeah, yeah,
- 32:22Speaker 1: I know. I'm sorry. He told John Clark that Campbell
- 32:25Speaker 1: is going to be out with the shoulder and that's
- 32:28Speaker 1: not great.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah. I know for fact that it's surgery, so he's
- 32:32Speaker 2: supposed to be ready, as I understand it, by training camp.
- 32:34Speaker 2: But MANDI he had one of the shoulder fixed that
- 32:39Speaker 2: did what. I don't know which one this is. I'm
- 32:41Speaker 2: not sure, but I hope it's not both. Now I've
- 32:44Speaker 2: had surgery.
- 32:45Speaker 1: That's tough. I mean it's tough because you know, this
- 32:47Speaker 1: is na Kobe Dean, like he came with the injuries.
- 32:50Speaker 1: He had injuries, and even though he plays well when
- 32:52Speaker 1: he's on the field, the injuries have thrilled his career.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Landon Dickinson had injuries and you know you but yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 1: I'm just saying, you're hoping that Campbell can overcome these
- 33:04Speaker 1: things and not be beat up in his career.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Well exactly put. But the good news is you've got Trotter,
- 33:08Speaker 2: You've got Manden. Now they're gonna get a ton of reps.
- 33:11Speaker 2: He was may if they feel like it at a
- 33:14Speaker 2: veteran linebacker, but you know, sometimes they're all season program
- 33:16Speaker 2: if they feel like it's needed. But to me, it's
- 33:18Speaker 2: an advantage for taking advantage of Mondan and Trotter, especially Mondan. Yeah,
- 33:23Speaker 2: I really didn't play on defense. He was a special teamer. Right.
- 33:26Speaker 2: So that's that.
- 33:28Speaker 1: All right, that's it. We will be back next time
- 33:31Speaker 1: you hear from us. We'll have even more news about
- 33:33Speaker 1: the Eagles and free agency. But that's gonna do it
