- 0:00my guest today is Dr Stephanie gutnik Dr
- 0:04gutnik obtained her doctorate and MBA
- 0:07from Edinburgh business school she was
- 0:10formerly the head of digital out of home
- 0:13for Yahoo and she is currently the chief
- 0:16strategy officer at Bops she is a
- 0:19genuine expert in digital outof home
- 0:21advertising and today we are going to be
- 0:24talking about some of the challenges and
- 0:27opportunities Stephanie I am so glad
- 0:29that you're able to join me thank you
- 0:32well thank you for having me James
- 0:34excellent excellent let's start with um
- 0:38what is Billups for those who aren't
- 0:39familiar can you please describe the
- 0:41company and the space that you play in
- 0:43definitely so Billups first and foremost
- 0:45is the last name of the founder bench
- 0:47Bops and uh the agency has been around
- 0:50for 20 years we celebrated our 20th
- 0:52anniversary last year uh started out of
- 0:55Portland Oregon and now we are the
- 0:58largest independent out of Home media
- 1:00agency in North America and really
- 1:03expanding globally super quickly at this
- 1:06point I uh I was brought into the role
- 1:08in September of 2023 and promptly after
- 1:12I started uh we acquired an agency in
- 1:14Toronto which is where I live so now
- 1:16we're covering Canada in that regard
- 1:18another one in Malaysia and another one
- 1:21in Belgium excellent thank you and
- 1:24congratulations on the on the role thank
- 1:27you stepping back um I used to naively
- 1:30hear digital out of home and think oh
- 1:33that's digital Billboards but I know in
- 1:36reality it is much more than that so can
- 1:38you help Define the digital out of home
- 1:41space for me please definitely and
- 1:43you're not alone most people think
- 1:45digital Billboards when they hear digit
- 1:47out of home uh but really the inventory
- 1:51spans any screen that you will be
- 1:53engaging with outside of your home so
- 1:56from the minute that you get on the
- 1:58subway uh if there are screens in the
- 2:00station or even on the Train sometimes
- 2:02um or if you are heading to an airport
- 2:05you and I both travel a fair bit for
- 2:07business you'll see some great displays
- 2:09in around the airports and in the backs
- 2:11of taxi cabs on the tops of taxi cabs
- 2:14shopping malls office elevators the list
- 2:17goes on
- 2:19Cinema and um when you're thinking about
- 2:23the all the different number of places
- 2:25they can be is it what is the biggest
- 2:27advantage of digital over traditional
- 2:30static out of home advertising it's a
- 2:33good question uh there is a a steady
- 2:36conversion of traditional faces the
- 2:39print faces to digital screens in
- 2:42certain locations uh but traditional
- 2:45won't be going away Brands still love
- 2:48traditional out of home for the 247
- 2:51awareness play they just get to own that
- 2:54space and there are certain um ways to
- 2:57use traditional like a wallscape for
- 2:59example where you'll see like a big
- 3:01Kelvin Klein ad on the side of a
- 3:03building in SoHo it just has that impact
- 3:07that will remain um a a marketer
- 3:09favorite but with digital the advantage
- 3:13there really becomes the flexibility you
- 3:15and I both met when we were working at
- 3:17Yahoo and um having programmatic
- 3:20capabilities and automation applied to
- 3:22the out of home space has really been a
- 3:24game Cher in being able to bring in um
- 3:27more more flexible marketing dollars and
- 3:30introduce the space to some smaller
- 3:32companies too that really need to get
- 3:33their name out there and who maybe
- 3:35didn't think it was possible before when
- 3:37you had to have these massive type
- 3:39campaigns so digital just make things a
- 3:42lot more flexible you can start and stop
- 3:44campaigns when you want switch up the
- 3:46creative and um once I was at an agency
- 3:49this is years ago but they didn't
- 3:51realize that like you can have weather
- 3:54triggers for example so if it's raining
- 3:56throw in an ad that's different than if
- 3:58it's sunny and this can um you know
- 4:00happen pretty much instantly right
- 4:02because there's a feed with that local
- 4:04weather station to the screen right so
- 4:07um anything that you can do in digital
- 4:09that's more conditions based or triggers
- 4:12based you can apply to digital out of
- 4:14home as well when we think about how um
- 4:17ads get shared through the space What
- 4:21are the usual models at the moment
- 4:23because if I'm driving down a freeway I
- 4:25might see ads being rotated every few
- 4:28seconds I can imagine that there might
- 4:30be still some areas that might even be a
- 4:32takeover for one Advertiser to rotate
- 4:34their own creative through and I could
- 4:36imagine that there are different models
- 4:38as you said just triggers that would
- 4:40would cause the rotation so is you're
- 4:42thinking about that and I'm particularly
- 4:44getting to what are there standards
- 4:46around these kinds of things in the same
- 4:48way that other Industries have move to
- 4:50like a 30 second creative or 15sec what
- 4:53are the standards right now so with out
- 4:56of home um particularly digital it used
- 4:58to be a loop based model to your point
- 5:01earlier where let's say for a billboard
- 5:04it was every six to n seconds say the ad
- 5:07would change and that was just a fixed
- 5:09Loop now with Automation and
- 5:11programmatic and AD serving capabilities
- 5:13in the digital aut of home space it's
- 5:15much more Dynamic and again you can buy
- 5:20out of home screens for their location
- 5:23it's definitely a good way to do things
- 5:25we talk a lot about context in the
- 5:27overall advertising lands you can pick a
- 5:30location based context and that's
- 5:33perfect but with this new way of AD
- 5:35serving you can also pick your audiences
- 5:39and the ad will play based on who is
- 5:42most likely to see the ad at that time
- 5:45so we've we've now brought data into the
- 5:48out of home space and we can judge by um
- 5:50the audiences as well and I would say
- 5:52too um in terms of the standards of of
- 5:56AD slots or or times it's totally going
- 6:00to depend based on um again the location
- 6:04and the dwell time of that audience so
- 6:07what we've done for brands in certain
- 6:09instances we can do a fulltime Square
- 6:11takeover all those digital assets can be
- 6:14at one time for a certain brand it's a
- 6:16beautiful visual experience so that's an
- 6:20option but also if um if your target
- 6:23audience is in like a restaurant or bar
- 6:26situation where they're going to be
- 6:28there for a while and 've got screens
- 6:30running content but also ads that's
- 6:33digital out of home it's a kind of fuzzy
- 6:35line because maybe you also would think
- 6:37of it as connected television uh but
- 6:40that's digital out of home and Those ads
- 6:41can be longer and in certain places
- 6:44video ads and out of home can even
- 6:46include
- 6:47audio Yeah so so talk to me about the
- 6:50different dimensions that advertisers
- 6:52care about because the way as you've
- 6:54been describing this I mean digital is
- 6:56complex enough as it is with all the
- 6:58different mation and ways you can cut
- 7:01the problem you just been introduced a
- 7:03few New Dimensions things like dwell
- 7:06time in the different audience
- 7:08composition when you are getting
- 7:10questions from new advertisers who are
- 7:13thinking about the space What are the
- 7:15sort of different dimensions that
- 7:16they're focused on or might have
- 7:18concerns about as they're moving from
- 7:20more traditional media so you know
- 7:22what's funny is I feel like there is a
- 7:24bit of a double standard when it comes
- 7:26to out of home because marketers that
- 7:28are new to the channel will often say
- 7:31things like but how do you know that
- 7:34someone actually saw the ad and to me
- 7:37you can just flip that right back at
- 7:39them it's like how do you know somebody
- 7:41saw your TV commercial was that not used
- 7:43as a bathroom break or you know running
- 7:46into the kitchen for a snack um I love
- 7:48ads of all kinds so I'm going to want to
- 7:50watch the TV commercials but I work in
- 7:52the industry so maybe it's an anomaly uh
- 7:56and and what Billups has done is one of
- 7:59the reasons why I was so excited to join
- 8:01the company is we've applied a lot of
- 8:04technology to the outof home space And
- 8:07so there's some proprietary and patented
- 8:09technology to help understand um
- 8:12viewability and visibility uh and
- 8:15attention so that kind of goes through
- 8:18viewability was a huge thing in
- 8:19advertising a couple years ago
- 8:21attention's now the Hot Topic we can
- 8:23look at both and we do so in measuring
- 8:27view sheds so we can look at if
- 8:29someone's driving down a freeway we can
- 8:31have an understanding of if there there
- 8:33might be some Street Furniture like a
- 8:35bus shelter with an ad on the side um or
- 8:38some of those Billboards and we have an
- 8:41understanding of is there anything
- 8:42obstructing The View like a a tree for
- 8:44example what's in the way and also based
- 8:47on people's likelihood to um where
- 8:50they're going to be looking we can see
- 8:53what parts of the boards or the screens
- 8:57they're actually going to be able to see
- 8:59or be drawn to so there's a lot of
- 9:02science that you can apply when it comes
- 9:05to selecting what inventory is right for
- 9:08a campaign so just to make sure I
- 9:10understand that correctly does that mean
- 9:13that essentially every time you're
- 9:15trying to serve on a new screen it needs
- 9:18to get mapped in some way in terms of
- 9:19its geolocation the potential obstacles
- 9:23the potential audience so for I mean
- 9:25that's that feels um time intensive
- 9:29intensive is it it is I mean that's why
- 9:32we've applied this technology to help
- 9:35the media planners on our teams do
- 9:37things more efficiently um but certainly
- 9:39there's a big chunk of in our data
- 9:41Sciences team there's data cleaning that
- 9:43goes on with the inventory that we bring
- 9:45on board um and you know it goes back to
- 9:49why Specialists won't be going away any
- 9:53time soon even with the introduction of
- 9:55Technology because people still really
- 9:57need to understand the landscape of
- 10:00things to make sure that these ads are
- 10:02appearing on boards and screens that
- 10:04will be seen by consumers got it well
- 10:08when you think about the
- 10:10advertisers who are most excited or the
- 10:13biggest opportunity for digital out of
- 10:15home is it the traditional sort of out
- 10:17of home advertisers who are now excited
- 10:20about the move to more options to be
- 10:23able to rotate and have different
- 10:24visuals or is it that um traditional you
- 10:28know web-based advertisers are now
- 10:31seeing that they can move their assets
- 10:33into the out- of Home landscape help me
- 10:34think about those tradeoffs it's such a
- 10:37good question um where we see a lot of
- 10:42excitement is again most people don't
- 10:44realize that out of home is as
- 10:47measurable as it actually is and even
- 10:50with um device IDs and cookies going
- 10:53away you know Billups has measurement
- 10:55methodologies that can accommodate full
- 10:58funnel so whether it's brand awareness
- 11:00or brand studies all the way through
- 11:02website conversions or app downloads
- 11:04we've been running this for years uh to
- 11:06accommodate gdpr and our clients in
- 11:08Europe and even in the states so um what
- 11:13I would say about that is performance
- 11:15marketers who might have said a little
- 11:17while ago I'm not interested in out of
- 11:19home that's a brand play they're
- 11:22starting to invest more money because a
- 11:24they realize that there does need to be
- 11:27a brand play in their holis marketing
- 11:29approach it can't just be lower funnel
- 11:31because then you're not growing your
- 11:33consumer base um but also that at of
- 11:35Home has that dual function you get the
- 11:38big creative that gets noticed but then
- 11:40you can also measure it so definitely an
- 11:43increase in interest by performance
- 11:45marketers who've been educated on what
- 11:47the channel can do and then if you look
- 11:49at just the biggest marketers in general
- 11:53McDonald's huge fan of out of home and
- 11:56they get really creative they can have
- 11:57fun with it because they're brand is so
- 11:59well known um there was a campaign that
- 12:03ran in Toronto in parts of Canada and I
- 12:06believe it wenton a can line a couple
- 12:08years ago where McDonald's would just
- 12:11have parts of the arch um in the
- 12:14billboard to advise drivers of like
- 12:17where they should be turning to get to a
- 12:19McDonald's location so they just it was
- 12:21really smart um Apple's a really big
- 12:24user of out of home it's all these big
- 12:27marketers that people aspire to be they
- 12:31probably over index in terms of their
- 12:33out of home spend interesting okay okay
- 12:37um we've already talked about the
- 12:39complexity of digital advertising which
- 12:41I'm always amazed at uh I think the
- 12:44number of AD formats the complexity of
- 12:47auctions there's always some major
- 12:49challenge that needs to be addressed to
- 12:51move things forward and when I think
- 12:53about digital out of home it's still
- 12:55relatively nent and and I would assume
- 12:57that some of the standards
- 12:59are still evolving when you look at sort
- 13:02of the biggest areas that are excuse me
- 13:04challenges that need to be addressed or
- 13:07where standards need to be established
- 13:09what would that area be it's a really
- 13:12great question because out of home is
- 13:16not you can't really standardize the
- 13:19format the same way you would a mobile
- 13:21ad um or an ad that appears on a a
- 13:23connected television or in your laptop
- 13:26for example so because we cannot
- 13:29standardize the creative assets we can
- 13:32just look at ways to make it easier um
- 13:36so if we're looking at programmatic for
- 13:38example maybe it's helping the client
- 13:40choose similar aspect ratios so that we
- 13:43don't have to make so many different
- 13:45types of content um but that's also the
- 13:47thrill of it creative agencies get
- 13:49really excited when they know that out
- 13:51of home is part of the plan and they can
- 13:54develop specifically for some
- 13:56spectacular sites right or um you know
- 14:00depending on the location they can just
- 14:02get specific and blend in with the space
- 14:05in a way that people really enjoy which
- 14:08I think is one of the reasons
- 14:10why people respond out of home in a more
- 14:14favorable way compared to other AD types
- 14:17it doesn't feel like it's interrupting
- 14:19the consumption of content uh it's
- 14:22usually like a little bit of
- 14:23entertainment or information while
- 14:25you're waiting for something to happen
- 14:27you know while you're on the subway or
- 14:29or in the airport
- 14:31so people respond favorably and then
- 14:34there's usually some positive
- 14:35implications to the brand because of
- 14:37that I um you've already talked I think
- 14:41you said people aren't aware of how well
- 14:44targeted it's possible to have digital
- 14:46out of home be and one of the P
- 14:49historical perceptions has been that it
- 14:52is less targeted than some traditional
- 14:53digital marketing where the user might
- 14:56have a cookie or a unique ID but we've
- 14:58seen seen fantasy versions or futuristic
- 15:00versions portrayed in movies where
- 15:02someone walks by a screen this facial
- 15:05recognition uh or maybe it's a signal
- 15:07from a device that they're using where
- 15:09they could get a targeted ad do you see
- 15:12evolution in that direction or do you
- 15:15see the privacy concerns being being too
- 15:18strong I always know when someone's new
- 15:20to the industry because they'll be doing
- 15:22a presentation and they'll bring up that
- 15:24clip for Minority Report where Tom Cruz
- 15:26is you know greeted personally in the
- 15:29store and uh I think that that
- 15:33technology exists to a certain extent
- 15:36right so sometimes there are going to be
- 15:38um cameras with the screens to
- 15:41understand you know the gender the age
- 15:43the emotion uh the dwell time and
- 15:45attention time to the screen you can
- 15:47glean all of that information from a
- 15:49camera um whether or not people like
- 15:53this you know kind of remains to be
- 15:55determined but the fact is it's totally
- 15:57privacy comp client nobody nothing's
- 16:00being stored in that sense and you're
- 16:02not identifying the specific person so I
- 16:06think even if you could get there why
- 16:09would the industry want to um and there
- 16:11are certain examples where people can
- 16:13engage I've seen um you know people
- 16:16might want to see their faces on screens
- 16:20in Time Square and sometimes Brands
- 16:22enable them to engage with content so
- 16:24that that can happen um but that is very
- 16:27much with their consent and so I I I
- 16:31can't see that becoming an issue what
- 16:33could become an issue is what's
- 16:35affecting the rest of the industry and
- 16:37again that's just cookie loss and uh
- 16:40device ID loss because out of home to
- 16:42date has has relied so heavily on mobile
- 16:46forms of of measurement uh talk to me
- 16:50about that because I hadn't thought
- 16:51about I I could imagine why device ID or
- 16:55mobile identifier would impact digital
- 16:58out of home I wouldn't have thought
- 16:59cookie loss would so can you talk me
- 17:01through maybe just start with what are
- 17:03the identifiers that are currently used
- 17:06yeah I mean even in terms of okay how
- 17:08would you determine if that led to a
- 17:10website conversion so right yep so that
- 17:14um is a is a means where cookie loss
- 17:16comes into play and um that's where
- 17:19again BPS has a Sciences team that has
- 17:22been working to understand methodologies
- 17:24that can strip away the device ID uh and
- 17:27are not Reliant lot of it a lot of it
- 17:29can be like causal modeling for example
- 17:31and it's funny when I talk to our CTO uh
- 17:34about what he and his team have created
- 17:37because it blows my mind and I'm so
- 17:39excited for clients to try it out and
- 17:41see what happens I always ask how
- 17:44details I can get in terms of explaining
- 17:46how we do it and he's never fussed he's
- 17:49like this isn't the secret sauce the
- 17:51secret sauce comes into the
- 17:53actual understanding of statistics and
- 17:56making sure that the team is telling the
- 17:58truth because as we know and you you
- 18:00know you didn't mention this but you
- 18:02also have a doctorate and so we've spent
- 18:04some time with Statistics and uh you can
- 18:07make a lot of stories based on the
- 18:09numbers that come in um and Billups and
- 18:13and the CTO team are just very adamant
- 18:15that we just tell what the story is and
- 18:19that's how you learn so um that's
- 18:22something I'm very proud of about the
- 18:24company okay um tell me digital out of
- 18:28home and Retail media networks so you
- 18:32know we've seen some examples Marriot
- 18:35Springs to mind where they've been
- 18:37putting screens in and at the same time
- 18:39trying to build out their own retail
- 18:41media network uh do you see that the
- 18:44sort of traditional hotels Airlines
- 18:47retailers Etc moving into digital app
- 18:50home and building retail media networks
- 18:53is a trend or are we just seeing some
- 18:54outliers at the moment oh I mean the
- 18:57term Firm retail media is a little bit
- 19:00trendy when I started off U my career I
- 19:02was at News America which is part of
- 19:04News Corp and um at that time inore
- 19:10advertising was called trade and then
- 19:12eventually it's Shopper marketing and
- 19:14now you know we've hit the retail media
- 19:17I hope what the attention to um the buzz
- 19:21is doing is helping everybody look at
- 19:23the marketing dollars more holistically
- 19:25because when we think about it yeah
- 19:27there are Sho or marketing dollars in
- 19:30one bucket and advertising dollars in
- 19:32another and if we can look at them
- 19:35together all the better right we have a
- 19:37better understanding of of the the
- 19:40shopping process and that path to
- 19:42purchase um and when it comes to the
- 19:44blend between out of home I am very much
- 19:47enjoying watching it all take shape uh
- 19:50because we have retailers who are
- 19:52implementing you know screens and the
- 19:54like in store this is nothing new Tesco
- 19:57through Deco has been doing this in the
- 19:59UK and that's just one example for a a
- 20:03long time years um and you know making
- 20:06sure that ads are are updated based on
- 20:09time of day day of week promotions these
- 20:11little things that make sense so that is
- 20:15increasing and then what we're also
- 20:17seeing is our retailers and Brands being
- 20:20more attuned to that the path to the
- 20:23store right so whether it's a gas
- 20:25station screen um you know maybe you'll
- 20:28be enticed to pop into the convenience
- 20:30store and pick something up that you
- 20:31just saw or um electric vehicle charging
- 20:35stations have become really popular for
- 20:36this too when they're placed by malls
- 20:39and by retailers there's a lot of out of
- 20:42home adjacency to retail
- 20:45media very interesting thank you um
- 20:48you're obviously a huge believer in in
- 20:51the power of digital out of home uh what
- 20:55do you believe about the power or the
- 20:58potential of digital out of home that
- 21:00you wish that others could
- 21:03see I think again it would just go back
- 21:06to Consumer reaction to it
- 21:10so I I really and I'm looking I have a
- 21:13the ogal Von advertising book on my
- 21:15coffee table the fun for advertising for
- 21:18me is really that consumer experience
- 21:22and making actually yeah making someone
- 21:25fall in love with your brand right and
- 21:28of Home has such a special way to do
- 21:29this not only because the creative
- 21:31possibilities are pretty much endless um
- 21:34but because people it exists in the real
- 21:38world and people trust it as a result of
- 21:41that uh the Publishers like there's a a
- 21:44person that still has to manually
- 21:46approve creative um unlike much of the
- 21:50other rest of the realm of of
- 21:52advertising where it's become more
- 21:54automated so somebody really has to go
- 21:56in and put some thought into what's
- 21:57going to run
- 21:58and I just call me a dreamer I just
- 22:00think this is such a it's a beautiful
- 22:02experience you can have so much fun with
- 22:04it and when people trust the medium
- 22:06they're more likely to trust your brand
- 22:08in your
- 22:09message brilliant um as we come to
- 22:13closing are there any last thoughts that
- 22:15you'd like to share be interested to
- 22:17hear a little bit more about your
- 22:18thoughts on out of
- 22:20home um I'm in the category of I'm first
- 22:24of all thank you for taking the time
- 22:25because I learn a lot every time I do
- 22:27one of these
- 22:28and I think I'm probably like a lot of
- 22:31people a little overwhelmed by the
- 22:33complexity and trying to understand
- 22:36where the real opportunities are given
- 22:38that clearly there are opportunities but
- 22:41you almost have to learn a new language
- 22:43around the dwell time around the screens
- 22:46the positioning of the screens and the
- 22:49ability or not to buy into them
- 22:52programmatically because some could be
- 22:53set up where they you know have a
- 22:56relatively weak connection to the
- 22:57internet and as you say just run a loop
- 23:00and so all of these things add yet more
- 23:03complexity and I think I'm trying to
- 23:06understand when things get to scale like
- 23:09when is the sort of breakout moment
- 23:11where it becomes an absolute no-brainer
- 23:14for advertisers to move there rather
- 23:16than um some of the advertisers you
- 23:19described I describe as early adopted
- 23:21you know they're trying creative things
- 23:23in different environments and they know
- 23:25they're out trailblazing but I don't
- 23:27know that we've reach the okay it's like
- 23:29TV I can just buy a slot and behind the
- 23:31scenes everything magically happens I'm
- 23:35totally with you and I I that's probably
- 23:38why I've been in the industry for as
- 23:40long as I have is it's just an underdog
- 23:43Channel and I like to root for the
- 23:45underdog and I'll be Satisfied when
- 23:48eventually it it gets that you know
- 23:51spend that it deserves I think but um
- 23:54because of the complexity that is again
- 23:57why you can just bring in a specialist
- 24:00you know not every marketer needs to
- 24:02understand exactly how everything works
- 24:06but you do need to have a trusted
- 24:07partner that it is actually it's never
- 24:10going to be easy but it's more simple
- 24:12for a media planner and out of home to
- 24:13put something together than someone who
- 24:16you know is is primed in in search right
- 24:21it absolutely Absol hey I've enjoyed
- 24:23this conversation so much I want to
- 24:26thank you for taking the time and really
- 24:28wish you the best of luck and all of
- 24:30your endeavors in the space so thank you
- 24:32so much thank you
