- Shaun: Welcome back to the reset. I am Sean Tucker, human performance scientist and authority architect. We are here in the Living Lab documenting the science, the struggle, and the shift for every high performance dad and founder who is ready to bridge the gap between their presence and their ambition. You don't need more willpower or discipline. You actually need the opposite. You need to know how to rest. This is something that I've had to learn the hard way, and I hope that it is for you too. I hope that this message comes a little bit earlier than when I received it. For many, many years I've been pushing myself to become the man or the version of myself that I thought I needed to be. To prove everyone wrong, basically. To show that I'm capable, I can do it. I can do anything I can set my mind to. Problem with that though And that ideology or that thinking is you only have one body. And what I mean by that is if you're not learning to preserve and conserve your energy, you will burn yourself. Because the flame that burns twice as bright burns for only half as long. Thank you, Lao Zhu, for that quote. Because that quote summarizes perfectly what I'm describing. If you think life has to happen very goal-oriented. It has to happen this way. I need to achieve my goals. I need to win. I need to get that all costs kind of mentality, that winning at all costs mentality. I'm really good at that, but I'm not good enough. So I need to keep working on it. I need to keep going harder, harder, and going on this pathway. There's only one destination in that place, and that is death. The thing that comes before that is burnout and disease. Cause your body, your body is a lot smarter than you realize. And it will force you to slow down. Right? So death is not the ending. Death could be the beginning. It could just be death of that identity you've been holding on to, the one that needs to prove everyone wrong. That you are capable, that you can do it, that you are able to do what. What you say you're gonna do. These are great qualities, great masculine qualities to have. But the problem is it's very fierce. It burns very bright. And if you aren't sustained, if you aren't sustaining, if you aren't recovering properly, the only thing it leads to is disease more quickly, rapid aging as well. So maybe it's worthwhile learning how to slow down. I know on the journey that I was, on the trajectory that I was six years ago, before gyms were forced closed by COVID, I was on a pathway that was pretty much gonna burn me out pretty quick. I'm glad and I'm fortunate that COVID came along and stopped my business. Stopped my income. It's another story. But it stopped my business. It forced me to look at myself in the mirror. And hopefully this podcast or the aim of this episode will actually get that lesson over to you much more quickly than I actually received it. For years I was chasing another version of what I thought I had to be. What I didn't realize was my body only has a limited amount of energy. It only has a limited amount of capability. There's nothing wrong with striving. There's nothing wrong with achieving. But if it's not kept in check, life will do it for you. Your body will always, always keep score. It always remembers. And if it's holding on to a lot of stuff, a lot of baggage, you can't outwheel yourself from what you're reluctant to feel. You can't outthink yourself if it's a feeling problem. If you're not able to move forward, it's not because you're not disciplined enough. It's not because you don't have enough willpower. Those tools I'm sure if you're listening, they're pretty sharp already. But maybe the tool of listening to what your body needs is a tool worth exploring. Is a message worth exploring? So not gonna tell you what to do. Your body's already telling you what to do. You already know what to do. You're just not listening. You're not hearing it through the noise. Because you're too busy comparing yourself to everyone else and what they're doing. But the beauty of what this life has for you is that you get to experience it. No one else experiences your life, right? Be weird if it was. I think it's pretty cool. Don't get me wrong. I am someone who is very strong willed and strong minded. But I've also been humbled many times before. The body always keeps up. Or the body always keeps score. Doesn't always keep up. Mind processes stuff a lot quicker than the body does. But if we don't let our own software update for our body, meaning the memories and energy that it still holds, forget it. There's no point in learning a new strategy if your body can't keep up. Maybe that new strategy is to learn to slow down. So if you found this episode helpful, I want you to share it with one person, someone who maybe needs to hear this message.
