- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening to Heroes, Villains, and the In-Between.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: He liked the sound of order.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: The measured strike of a hammer.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: The clean edge of a cut beam.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: The satisfaction of something fitting the way it was meant to.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Life made sense when things were square.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: That's why the news felt so wrong.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: It didn't arrive loudly.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: No accusations, no panic, just words, carefully spoken, carrying a weight that bent everything he thought he knew.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: The woman he loved stood before him, eyes steady but uncertain.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Her voice didn't shake, but his world did.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Pregnant, and not by him.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: He didn't shout, he didn't demand explanations, he didn't reach for anger, he reached for silence.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Because this news did not fit.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: It didn't align with what he knew about her, her family, or her purity.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: So silence was his answer for now, as he considered how to make the next cut carefully.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Because when something doesn't fit, a wise man measures again before cutting.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Looks lingered too long, whispers when he would walk by.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Did you hear?
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: How disgusting! He's a good man, isn't he?
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Then how did this happen?
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: It was her fault.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: What will he do?
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: The law gave him options, public ones, harsh ones, ones that would clear his name.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: But honor mattered to him, and so did mercy.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: That's why he wasn't looking to save face.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: He was looking to do what was right without destroying someone else.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: So he chose the quiet road.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: He would step away from the relationship quietly, privately, let her keep dignity and let the whispers fall where they may.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: It was settled.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: The next morning he would make the cut and end the relationship.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Just one more night of living in a nightmare.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So that evening he laid down.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: For the first time in a while, fell asleep.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Then suddenly a voice, do not be afraid to take her home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: He woke up in a sweat.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: It was dawn.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Was that a dream?
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Was it real?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: What was he feeling?
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Was it fear?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: No.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: His heart was pounding, not with confusion or fear, but with clarity.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: What was happening was not a mistake.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: This child was part of something far bigger than him.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Sometimes obedience does not explain itself.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: It simply asked for trust.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: So he stayed.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: He took her as his wife, not loudly, not to make a point, but quietly.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: He carried the weight of assumptions that were never his to carry.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: He stood between her and judgment.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: He stood between her and the whispers.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: No speeches, no applause, no need to be seen.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: When the child was born, he was there, hands worn by labor, callous, steady, gentle in the moment that mattered most.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: He spoke the child's name, a name given to him, not chosen, accepted, because naming meant responsibility.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: This child was not his by blood, but he would be his by faith.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Years passed, wood was cut, floors were swept, meals were shared, the boy grew.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Curious, strong-willed, quietly observant.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: He learned the sound of work, the scrape of a plane, the pull of a measure, the pause before the cut.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: He asked questions no child should have known to ask, and he listened.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: He learned to measure twice, to stand upright, to remain steady when misunderstood.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And then came another dream, another warning, another interruption, another call to move before answers arrived.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: In the dead of night, he gathered his family.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: No announcement, no preparation, no delay, just obedience again.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Others might have asked, why?
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: He asked, how fast.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: The boy would grow, and he would fade quietly into the background of the story that changed the world.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: No recorded words or public murals, and like most good men, no recognition, just hatefulness and obedience.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: As a man who trusted God enough to step aside so God's plan could step forward.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: A man named Joseph.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I'm Sebastian Lesito.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Welcome to Heroes, Villains, and the In Between.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: You just watched a video on the life of Joseph, and I think when God told me to write this book, Heroes, Villains, and the In Between, he said, write a book on 66 people in the Bible, good or bad.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: It didn't matter if their life was a failure or a success, who never wrote scripture, whose life has a story, and whose story can teach a lesson.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: When you look at the Bible, it's a book of people, and wrapped around it is doctrine and ideology.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And I think of anyone that I uh when I started the book, anyone that I touched in the book, I think Joseph uh was probably the least amount of scriptural real estate, you know, page real estate, but he's in every nativity scene in the world, and he's part of God's major plan.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: And here's the thing there's no recorded words that came out of his mouth.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: He never spoke anything.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: We just see him acting and moving uh in obedience to God.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: He was very faithful, very merciful, very righteous.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: So when we look at his story, let's start in Matthew chapter one, verse 18.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: It says, Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man, was not wanting to make her a public example, but was minded to put her away secretly.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid, take for you Mary to be your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit, and she will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: So all of this was done that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is translated God with us.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel had commanded him, and took to him his wife, and she did not know he did not know her until they brought forth a firstborn son, and he called his name Jesus.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, this is the first real citing here of Joseph in scripture.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: And let's try and put ourselves in the story.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: You know, he's he's a hard-working guy, he's very ethical, he's very uh, you know, uh he follows the covenant, he goes to Jerusalem every year.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: We see we're gonna see it in scripture today, every year at Passover time.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: And and here's the thing: this young girl that he loves and he's dreaming about and he's putting his life together around comes to him and says, Joseph, I'm pregnant and it's God.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, just think about that for a second.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: You know, what you know, what's going off in your mind?
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Now you're looking at this girl that you know that you that you have dreamt about putting your life together with, and she comes and says, I'm pregnant and it's God.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: You know, what would you think?
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Think about it.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Go back then and think about it.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: So his immediate decision was not to put her to shame, to bring judgment on her.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: He wanted to insulate her from the shame of her pregnancy.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, he didn't, I guess, believe her story for a second, but he he wanted to put her away, meaning he wanted to break up with her, but he wanted to do it silently.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: He wanted to protect her, he wanted to defend her.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: He cared more about her than his reputation, and he stood in the way of the ridicule that would have come.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, while he's the Bible says, while he's thinking about these things, an angel appears to him and says, Joseph, she was right.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: It was the Holy Spirit.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: You're gonna have a son, call his name Jesus, he's gonna be a savior, he's gonna be the Messiah, he's gonna be the one that'll save the children of Israel and bring about this uh God's gospel plan to the world.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: And you know, the Bible says and he does this several times as we go through today.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: He immediately obeys.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: He doesn't question, he doesn't ask, he doesn't negotiate, he immediately plans uh and acts on God's plan.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, his obedience, his mercy, his righteousness, his character is all there even from the beginning.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: And again, he never said anything.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: We learn from his the life, his story in his life of how a righteous man acts, because love cares about the other person.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: The Bible says in Philippians, you know, we esteem others better than ourselves.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: That means that we don't look down on anybody.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Here, Joseph lived that out.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: He lived the fruit of the spirit out in his life, you know, and so the the the second thing when, and it's not in in um, I don't think it's in the uh video that you watched earlier, but when he went to Bethlehem with Mary, they couldn't find a place to stay.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: There was no place for them.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Now you have to understand, all of Joseph's brothers, cousins, father, uncles, they were all in Bethlehem.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: They all were of the same lineage and had to go to Bethlehem.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: But in this case, early on, he doesn't have any family that would put him up, any family that would draw him in.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: She was pregnant and they wouldn't bring her in.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: We we we see this through the eyes of the Bible when we start looking into these issues of you know, of the rejection, the shame, the whispers in the street of she's pregnant and he's supposed to be a righteous man, you know, and and this is a shame.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: And all of the stories that are going on, Joseph had to be the one that insulated Mary from these things.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: He had to go between them.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: So now after uh Jesus is uh is born, we go to Matthew chapter 2 and verse 13.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: It says, And when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared uh to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, take the young child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: For Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt I called my son.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: And so again, he he gets a dream, he gets a word from God, he the Bible says he arises immediately, he packs up Mary and the child, and they go.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: You know, Joseph was a protector of Jesus.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: So Matthew 2, verse 19.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child's life are dead.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Then he arose and took the young child and his mother, came into the land of Israel.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: But when he heard that Articles was reigning over Judah, instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee, and he came and dwelt in the city of Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, he shall be called a Nazarene.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: So once again an angel spoke to Joseph, Arise and obey without hesitation.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: You know, he he immediately reacted.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: His immediate obedience was part of his DNA.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: He didn't, you know, try to ask God questions because it was uncomfortable.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: You know, God met Joseph's fear through fresh guidance all the time.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: You know, sitting humbly in Nazareth fulfilled prophecy, shaping how Jesus would be known.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: And when we look at the life of Joseph, he was instrumental in this.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: And so we see here, you know, he he the first piece of this was he's he Mary tells him, I'm pregnant.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: He puts her away quietly.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: The second piece of this is he's told to go to Egypt.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: So he picks up, packs up, shuts his business down, and goes to Egypt.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: You know, what's entailed in that?
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: When he gets to Egypt, the angel tells him, You can go back now.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: On the way back, he has to go to Nazareth and re-establish shop there.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: You know, and at 12 years old, we're gonna see him, you know, uh, Jesus break away from him and you know, talking about going about his father's business.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: So all of this adds up to a man with tremendous integrity, uh, a tremendous devotion to God, an understanding of what it meant to be a father.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, we can learn how to be a father and a husband through Joseph and his life.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And he was a role model for Jesus.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Even though we're gonna see in our next section of scripture, Jesus knew who he was, but Jesus still needed a role model.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, think about four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten years old growing up in a family.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: Your father's your role model as a boy, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, the fulfillment of this, God choosing a carpenter.
- 17:28SPEAKER_02: Now he was in the lineage of David.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: When you look at both Mary and Joseph, uh, if you trace back, both of them came from different sons of David.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: And they traveled through history.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: The lines travel through history, they're given to us in the Gospels, and one ended up being the father of Joseph, and one ended up being the father of Mary.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: And so, through both lineages, that's why the angel says to him, Joseph, son of David, because he is of the lineage of David.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: You know, and so uh when you look at his life, um, he was the perfect candidate for this.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: In Luke chapter 2, verse 41, his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, now he's twelve years old at this time, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: When they had finished the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Joseph and his mother did not know it, but supposing him to have been with the company, they went a day's journey and sought him among their relatives and acquaintances.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: So when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: So now it was after three days that they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: And all who heard them were astonished at his understanding and his answers.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: So when they saw him, they were amazed, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you done this to us?
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Look, your father and I have sought you anxiously.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: And he said to them, Why did you seek me?
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Did you not know that I must be about my father's business?
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: But they did not understand the statement which was spoken to them.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Then they went down with them and came to Nazareth, and were subject unto them, and Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: So Joseph faithfully led his family to Jerusalem every year at the time of Passover.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: His devotion of worship was a model to the young boy Jesus as he grew.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: When Jesus was missing, you know, Joseph and Mary searched, you know, aggressively for him.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: And there's a couple of times where we see that they don't really understand.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Yet we have to understand that when God spoke to Mary that she was going to have a child, God didn't inform her about everything that she was going to have to go through.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: He didn't tell her about the crucifixion, the sacrifice, or any of that.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: He spoke to her and said, He's going to be the Messiah, he's going to be a savior, he's going to take away the sins, he's the Son of God.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: But she really didn't understand.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: We can see it in various times in Scripture where she didn't understand.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: And I really think Joseph didn't understand.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, when when he said, I must be about my father's business, you know, think about that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: You know, well, what do you mean?
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: What do you what is is this is this what we're in for?
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: You know, and we see it even later in life when he's 30 years old.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Now picture Mary, Joseph dies sometime between uh Jesus being 12 and Jesus being 30, because we don't we don't see him.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: We see other sons.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: We see that Jude and James and there's their sisters.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, we see this in Mark's gospel where there's several sons named, and the aren't these his you know sisters?
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: So we see that they had other children, they had a big family.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: He's a carpenter, but after 30 years, you sort of lose what happened 30 years ago.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: You know, and so that's why I think when Jesus was on the cross, he told Mary, Behold your son, this is what I was telling you.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: This is what's what's going to happen.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Jesus didn't hide the gospel plan.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: So now we see Jesus at 12 years old and Joseph with them.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: And again, Joseph didn't say anything at this saying.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: And so when you look uh at the life of Joseph, what does it teach us?
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: You know, he chose character over reputation.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Jesus chose, I mean, Joseph chose righteousness even when it invited gossip and misunderstanding.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, do you fear the judgment of people more than you fear obedience to God?
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: You know, would you do something for God that would bring ridicule and gossip and a misunderstanding?
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Obedience without delay.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: We see him do it a couple of times in scripture.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: He, you know, he just he just got the vision, he got the dream, he got up and he obeyed.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: You know, and and in sacrificial care, Joseph guarded Jesus and Mary at great personal cost.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Are you willing to lay down your comfort to do the will of God?
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: You know, Joseph did several times, you know, and and he he put aside his feelings and his emotions to take this woman in who was pregnant, his relatives and all those that lived around him early in his life, you know, probably thought he slept with her before, you know, and and so they went through life together.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: And at the end of it, his faithfulness in the silence is what I want you to see.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: You know, John the Baptist said, I must decrease and he must increase.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Joseph was the same.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: He sort of fades out of the picture between 12 and 30 years old of Jesus' age.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Yet he was very instrumental in that first piece of his life.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: So hopefully you learned something about Joseph today.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: I think we can learn a lot from his story.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: And uh I thank you for joining us.
