- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Thursday,
- 0:16June 25th, 2026. Before we get started, I just
- 0:20wanted to take a moment and say thank you. Today
- 0:23marks the one year anniversary of the Sacramento
- 0:25Brief and the close of season one. What started
- 0:29as a simple way to keep our community informed
- 0:31has grown beyond anything I could have ever imagined.
- 0:34Today, the Sacramento Brief has been downloaded
- 0:37in 15 countries around the world. Whether you're
- 0:40listening here in the Sacramento region or halfway
- 0:43around the globe, thank you for making me a part
- 0:46of your morning. Your support, your encouragement,
- 0:49and simply pressing play each day have made the
- 0:52first year possible. Here's to an incredible
- 0:55first year and an even bigger season two. Now,
- 0:59let's get you caught up. A Sacramento County
- 1:03jury has convicted Daniel Murphy in three counts
- 1:05of assault with a firearm and peace officers
- 1:08following a six -hour standoff in North Highlands
- 1:11back in March of 2023. Deputies responded to
- 1:15reports of gunfire from Murphy's apartment, where
- 1:18he repeatedly ignored commands to surrender and
- 1:21instead fired at law enforcement officers at
- 1:23least 24 times. Bullets struck both patrol vehicles
- 1:27as well as an armored rescue vehicle, but remarkably,
- 1:30no deputies or nearby residents were injured.
- 1:33Murphy eventually surrendered after deputies
- 1:36deployed tear gas and a canine. He now faces
- 1:39up to 44 years and eight months in state prison.
- 1:42Sentencing is scheduled for July 27th. And in
- 1:46another remarkable law enforcement story, Sacramento
- 1:49County Sheriff's Office showcased new technology
- 1:52that helps safely end a dangerous standoff involving
- 1:55a wanted parolee. Deputies used a drone to locate
- 1:59the suspect unconscious inside a garage while
- 2:02still holding a knife. By attaching a powerful
- 2:06magnet beneath the drone, they were able to safely
- 2:09remove the knife from his hand before deputies
- 2:12entered the building. And what sheriff's office
- 2:15say is believed to be the first successful use
- 2:18of a drone to disarm a suspect in the nation.
- 2:21The operation also featured the sheriff's new
- 2:23robotic canine platform named Buster, which helped
- 2:27clear obstacles and improve access for deputies.
- 2:30The suspect was eventually taken into custody,
- 2:32treated at the hospital, and booked into the
- 2:34Sacramento County Main Jail. In City Watch, with
- 2:39Fourth of July approaching, the Sacramento Fire
- 2:42Department is reminding residents that illegal
- 2:44fireworks can come with fines of up to $10 ,000.
- 2:48The city says illegal fireworks continue to cause
- 2:51fires, injuries, and place unnecessary strain
- 2:54on emergency responders during the hottest part
- 2:56of the year. Property owners can also be held
- 2:59responsible if illegal fireworks are used on
- 3:01their property unless they immediately take steps
- 3:04to stop the activity and contact law enforcement.
- 3:09Residents can report illegal fireworks by calling
- 3:12the Sacramento Fire's non -emergency line. or
- 3:15by using the 311 app. You're tuned in to the
