- 2:42episode of the series, Jesus Never Said That.
- 2:45So let's do this like we used to. Have faith, let it begin.
- 2:49Series finale of Jesus Never Said That starts right now.
- 3:03Can you believe I actually played the outro to that? Oh boy,
- 3:07it's early. I have to have a cup of coffee.
- 3:09Yeah, let's try that again, shall we? Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 3:12Hey, we're live. Have Faith, Let It Begin starts right now.
- 3:15Have Faith, Let Begin. When it starts right now.
- 3:22Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin.
- 3:25Here's your host, Angel Santana. Oh boy, please keep me in prayer,
- 3:30my goodness. I can't keep my head on straight here this morning. All right, let's begin.
- 3:35You've heard it in church, you've seen it online, and maybe you've even said it yourself.
- 3:41It sounds biblical, but is it?
- 3:44Welcome to Jesus Never Said That, a special series from Half-Faith, Let It Begin.
- 3:49I'm Angel Santana, and together, we've been going beyond the quotes,
- 3:53cliches, assumptions to discover what God's word actually says.
- 3:59So one last time, grab your Bible and bring your questions because we are going
- 4:05to explore the last episode of this series.
- 4:08Well, we finally made it. It's episode 10, the final of the Jesus Never Said That series.
- 4:15Over the course of this series, we've talked about God helps those who help themselves.
- 4:21Everything happens for a reason. Follow your heart.
- 4:25God won't give you more than you can handle. Money is the root of all evil.
- 4:30Hate the sin, love the sinner.
- 4:33Cleanliness is next to godliness. The lion will lie down with a lamb.
- 4:39And God just wants you to be happy. Some weren't in Scripture at all.
- 4:44Some were based loosely on biblical ideas.
- 4:47And some came from verses that had been shortened or remembered incorrectly.
- 4:53And some communicated part of the truth while missing something much bigger.
- 4:58But today, we're not adding another saying to the list.
- 5:02No, today we're talking about four words that should immediately make us pay
- 5:07attention. The Bible says.
- 5:10Because once somebody says those words, what usually happens, we listen.
- 5:16Especially if the person saying them in someone we respect,
- 5:21it's a pastor, a teacher, a family member, a friend, a Christian influencer,
- 5:29a believer, a podcast host, and yes, even me.
- 5:34But after 10 episodes together, I hope I've convinced you to do something. Check.
- 5:41Don't believe something simply because somebody put the words the Bible says in front of it.
- 5:48Open the Bible and read it and discover what actually it says,
- 5:54because that is important. So here's our heart check.
- 5:58Do I know what the Bible says, or do I mostly know what other people have told
- 6:04me the Bible says? That's the question.
- 6:07And that's a difficult question, because there's nothing wrong with listening
- 6:10to sermons. There's nothing wrong with podcasts.
- 6:14There's nothing wrong with Bible studies. There's nothing wrong with Christian books, Catholic books.
- 6:21Those things can be incredibly helpful. But they should point us towards Scripture. and not replace it.
- 6:29If the Bible only, well, if only the Bible and I ever encountered is somebody
- 6:35else's interpretation of it, then I'm always depending on somebody,
- 6:41somebody else to tell me what God said.
- 6:44And that's not where I wanted us to stay.
- 6:48You know, I know right now people are probably saying, but Angel said,
- 6:52let me make this personal.
- 6:54If you ever find yourself in a
- 6:55conversation and say, well, Angel said on half-eighth let it begin, okay.
- 7:01Then I want you to do something else. I want you to open your Bible and check
- 7:06me. That's right. I want you to check me.
- 7:09Seriously, don't assume that I'm right simply because I have a microphone.
- 7:14And don't assume somebody is right because they have a church.
- 7:17Don't assume that they're right because they have a million followers.
- 7:21And please don't assume that they're right because the video has 10 million views.
- 7:25Don't assume that we're wrong simply because they disagree with something you've always believed.
- 7:31Go back to scripture. I want, I don't want this podcast to teach you what to
- 7:37think without question.
- 7:40I want conversations like this to encourage you to open the Bible and engage with it yourself.
- 7:47Because ultimately, I'm not the authority. God's word is.
- 7:51Context, context, Context, context. One of the biggest lessons from this series is one word, context.
- 8:00Context means we don't grab one sentence and ignore everything around it. We ask, who wrote this?
- 8:08Who were they writing to? What is happening?
- 8:13Comes before this verse? What comes after it?
- 8:16What kind of writing is poetry, history, prophecy, a letter, wisdom, literature?
- 8:25What does the passage actually mean in its setting?
- 8:29Because you can make the Bible appear, pardon me, to say some pretty strange things.
- 8:36If you pull sentences out of context, we saw that earlier with,
- 8:41God won't give you more than you can handle.
- 8:44People often connect that idea to 1 Corinthians 10.13.
- 8:48But when we read the verse carefully, Paul is talking about temptation.
- 8:53Context changes the conversation.
- 8:56So don't build a belief on half a verse.
- 9:00Episode 5 gave us another example. People say money is the root of all evil.
- 9:06But 1 Timothy 6.10 says, for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
- 9:13A few missing words completely changed the meaning. And that's why reading scripture carefully matters.
- 9:20Sometimes the difference between good theology and bad theology is something
- 9:25as simple as finishing the sentence.
- 9:29Our memories aren't scripture. Then we had our lion and lamb.
- 9:34For years, people have pictured, the lion will lie down with the lamb.
- 9:39But Isaiah 11.6 begins, the wolf will live with the lamb.
- 9:45The lion is the passage. The lamb is in the passage.
- 9:50Our memories simply rearrange the cast, and that's an important, important lesson.
- 9:57Something feeling familiar doesn't make it scripture, by the way.
- 10:02We can remember things incorrectly.
- 10:05I can. You can. Pastors can. Teachers can. Everybody can.
- 10:12That's why we have the text. Go back and look.
- 10:16Let's see. We need to be careful with social media scriptures.
- 10:20And now we've got another challenge previous generations didn't have at this scale.
- 10:25Social media. You scroll through TikTok, Instagram, Facebook,
- 10:31YouTube, and there it is. A beautiful sunset.
- 10:35Inspirational music, a sentence in a fancy lettering. Yeah.
- 10:41And then underneath, God, or Bible, or Jesus.
- 10:48And suddenly we assume it's scripture. Please don't do that.
- 10:52A beautiful background doesn't make something biblical. A million likes don't
- 10:58make something biblical.
- 11:00Someone saying, God told me, doesn't automatically mean God told them.
- 11:05Test what you hear. What does scripture say about that?
- 11:10Acts 17 gives us a wonderful example.
- 11:14Paul and Silas arrive in Bury. And Acts 17, 11 tells us the Buryans examine
- 11:21the scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. Think about that.
- 11:28This was Paul teaching them, and they checked. Scriptures praises them for it.
- 11:34They weren't criticized for asking questions.
- 11:37They were described as noble because they received the message eagerly and examined
- 11:41scripture? That's the kind of listener I want you to become.
- 11:45Listen eagerly, but check carefully. Questions aren't the enemy of faith.
- 11:51Sometimes Christians become nervous about questions. What if I question something?
- 11:56What if I don't understand? What if I discover something isn't exactly what I was taught?
- 12:01Ask, study, pray.
- 12:05Seek wise counsel. Faith doesn't have to be afraid of an honest question.
- 12:10Sometimes asking questions is exactly what drives us deeper into Scripture.
- 12:15The danger isn't saying, I don't understand this.
- 12:19The danger is pretending we understand something we never bothered to read.
- 12:25Read more than one verse. Here's one particular habit I hope you'll take from this series.
- 12:30You know, when somebody gives you a Bible verse, read around it.
- 12:35Don't only read verse 10.
- 12:38Don't read verse 9.
- 12:41Sorry, let me rephrase that. Don't only read verse 10. You need to read verse
- 12:459 or read verse 11. I was all over the place there.
- 12:49Maybe read the whole chapter. You know, if possible, understand what's happening in the entire book.
- 12:55You'd be surprised how often the meaning becomes clearer when you simply keep reading.
- 12:59The Bible wasn't originally written as thousands of isolated inspirational quotes.
- 13:05Those verses, no, those verse numbers were added later to help us navigate the
- 13:10text, and they're useful.
- 13:12But don't let the numbers make you forget that you're reading a larger message.
- 13:18Here's my personal reflection. When I started this series, I know.
- 13:23I know now and I knew we were going to have some fun because some of these sayings
- 13:27really do make you stop and say, wait, that's not in the Bible?
- 13:30I know I did that many times.
- 13:32But somewhere along the way, this series became about something bigger for me.
- 13:36It's not really about catching people saying the wrong thing.
- 13:39It's about respecting scripture enough to want to know what it actually says,
- 13:45and I include myself in that.
- 13:47I'm still learning. I'm still studying. I'm still asking questions,
- 13:52and I hope I never reach the point where I think I already know everything this
- 13:57Bible has to teach me, because I don't.
- 14:00None of us do. There's always another layer, another connection,
- 14:05another question, another opportunity, Another opportunity for God to challenge us.
- 14:11So if this series caused you to open your Bible even once to check something I said, good.
- 14:17That's exactly what I hoped would actually happen. So.
- 14:22Living it out. How do we do that? So how do we take things, well,
- 14:26take everything from these 10 episodes and carry it forward?
- 14:30I want to give you five simple habits. Number one, when you hear the Bible says,
- 14:36check, ask where and look it up.
- 14:39Then read the context. That's number two. Don't stop at one sentence. Read what surrounds it.
- 14:45And three, ask good questions. Who wrote it? To whom? Why? And what's happening?
- 14:52And number four, compare scripture with scripture. Don't build an entire belief
- 14:57around one isolated phrase.
- 14:59Look at the broader biblical witness.
- 15:03And number five, stay humble. This might be the biggest one of all of it.
- 15:09Sometimes you'll discover, guess what?
- 15:12I was wrong. And that's okay. Learning isn't losing.
- 15:17Growing isn't failure. If scripture corrects something I believed,
- 15:22then I want to be corrected.
- 15:24Because the goal isn't providing or proving that I've always been right.
- 15:29The goal is knowing God more faithfully.
- 15:32So here's our faith challenge. For our final faith challenge,
- 15:35I am giving you something simple.
- 15:38For the next seven days, read scripture every day. It doesn't have to be an
- 15:42hour. Start with 10 minutes. Choose one gospel.
- 15:46If you don't know where to begin, try Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.
- 15:52Before you read, say a prayer.
- 15:55Pray, God, show me what your word actually is saying.
- 16:00Then read slowly and ask questions. Write something down. I know I do.
- 16:06And if something confuses you don't immediately skip it.
- 16:10I used to do that. Don't do that Investigate call somebody study ask questions,
- 16:16Because I don't want the end of jesus never said that to be the end of your
- 16:21curiosity Or mine for that sake.
- 16:23I want it to be the beginning Let's pray.
- 16:27Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 16:29your word. Thank you that you've given us scripture to teach us challenge.
- 16:34Well, to teach us really, and then challenge us, encourage us,
- 16:39correct us, and point us toward you. I like that better.
- 16:42Forgive us for the times we've repeated things without checking them.
- 16:46Forgive us when we've taken verses out of context.
- 16:50Forgive us when we've been more interested in proving our point than understanding your word.
- 16:55Give us hunger. give us hunger for scripture, give us wisdom,
- 17:00give us discernment, give us humility, especially when we discover we've misunderstood something.
- 17:07Protect us from false teaching, protect us from twisting your word to fit what
- 17:13we already want to believe, and
- 17:15help us become people who don't simply own Bibles, but actually open them.
- 17:21For everyone who has joined us through these 10 episodes, bless their journey.
- 17:28Let this series create curiosity. Let curiosity lead to study and let study
- 17:33lead to understanding and let understanding draw us closer to Jesus in his heavenly name. Amen.
- 17:41What's our final takeaway from this series? Well, for nine episodes,
- 17:44we've asked, did Jesus say that?
- 17:47Does the Bible actually say that? And today I want to leave you with one sentence.
- 17:53Before you quote it, read it.
- 17:56Not because every Christian is saying it's terrible. Not because every pastor is wrong.
- 18:02Not because every social media post is misleading. But because God's words deserve,
- 18:08more than secondhand familiarity.
- 18:11Open it, read it, study it, and question your assumptions.
- 18:17Check the context, and yes, check me too, because your faith shouldn't depend
- 18:23on Angel Santana knowing the Bible for you.
- 18:26I'm still studying, and I want you to know. I want you to know it.
- 18:31And with that said, we've reached the end of Jesus Never Said That.
- 18:3510 episodes, 10 conversations, and hopefully a whole lot of open Bibles.
- 18:42If this series challenged you, surprised you, encouraged you,
- 18:47or taught you something new, I have one question. Share it.
- 18:53Send this series to somebody. Maybe a friend, a family member,
- 18:57someone from your congregation, someone who's curious about Christianity,
- 19:01or someone who has questions about things they've heard Christians say.
- 19:07And if this is your first time discovering Have Faith Let It Begin, welcome home.
- 19:13This series may be ending, but there's so much more waiting for you.
- 19:17Explore other special series and episodes filled with real-life stories,
- 19:21encouragement, honest, conversations, questions, laughter, struggles, hope, and faith.
- 19:29Follow the podcast, download the episodes, and share them, and become part of
- 19:34this growing community because around here for the last nine years,
- 19:39we're not pretending we have every answer.
- 19:41We're willing to have the conversation.
- 19:43Well, that's it. As you know, my name is Angel Santana.
- 19:48I wanna thank you for taking the time to be with us for these 10 episodes of
- 19:52A Journey With Me and wherever life finds you next.
- 19:55Remember that Have Faith, Let It Begin is about real people,
- 19:59real stories, real faith.
- 20:02And I hope that all of you, as always, to remember that have faith,
- 20:09let it begin, is our amen.
- 20:12Because we want you to have faith and let it begin.
- 20:15And when we end this series, we're gonna end it the way we started it.
- 20:19You've heard it in church. You've seen it online. Maybe you even said it yourself. It sounds good.
- 20:26It might even sound Christian, but is it?
- 20:31Maybe you've said it yourself. Maybe you said it sounds good,
- 20:35right? It might even sound Christian, but is it actually biblical?
- 20:40Don't just take somebody's word for it. Open the Bible and find out.
- 20:45So, do you think we have another series coming? Oh, I've already started a new one.
- 20:51Can't wait to share what that's going to be like. But I'm not going to tell
- 20:54you until you download, subscribe, and share each episode to your friends.
- 21:00God bless you. God be with you. Yoste bendiga.
- 21:03And if you're on your way to work, stop over and get something to eat.
- 21:07That's what my dad would tell me.
