- 0:26Speaker 1: division previews for today's Football at four. Andrew deiceco is here.
- 0:30Speaker 1: As we've been breaking down all the divisions leading up
- 0:34Speaker 1: to the NFC East which will get us ready for
- 0:36Speaker 1: the start of the NFL season. And last week we
- 0:40Speaker 1: looked at the AFC North, we took the AFC East,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and today we take a look at the AFC South,
- 0:46Speaker 1: which is interesting because that will be the division that
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Eagles will face this season. They will face the
- 0:53Speaker 1: four teams in the AFC South, so we'll get a
- 0:56Speaker 1: little bit of a preview of four of the Eagles
- 0:58Speaker 1: opponents this year, which includes Tennessee, Jacksonville, Houston. That's an
- 1:04Speaker 1: interesting game because it is on Christmas Eve, and then
- 1:09Speaker 1: the fourth team in that Division. When you take a
- 1:12Speaker 1: look at the four teams in that division, Jacksonville the
- 1:15Speaker 1: winner last year, Houston, and then the Indianapolis Colts. So
- 1:18Speaker 1: it's the fourth team and that game, by the way,
- 1:21Speaker 1: is on a Saturday this year. So we're gonna break
- 1:24Speaker 1: them all down. We'll take the top stories to know
- 1:27Speaker 1: for each team, some of the additions, subtractions, and take
- 1:30Speaker 1: a look at the four teams with our AFC South
- 1:34Speaker 1: preview Andrew Dechecko from the Inside the Birds podcast Football
- 1:38Speaker 1: at four. But before we get to that, last week,
- 1:42Speaker 1: we talked to Andrew on the same day that we
- 1:46Speaker 1: talked to Steve Heidner Kenny Banya from The Seinfeld Show. Now, you,
- 1:50Speaker 1: Andrew had said you were going to go to the show.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Did you end up making your way to see Banya
- 1:56Speaker 1: at the show last week?
- 1:58Speaker 2: It was hilarious. I wanted to. I talked to him
- 2:01Speaker 2: after the show. I forgot to mention I've been working out,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I'm huge, but yeah, a lot of classic lines from him.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It was a great stand up in a great night.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So yeah, I didn't know that you were seriously actually
- 2:12Speaker 1: gonna go to the show when you came on last week.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I thought, you know, hey, you know, that's funny that
- 2:16Speaker 1: you had him on. But then I saw the picture
- 2:17Speaker 1: on your social media account. I said, man, he actually
- 2:20Speaker 1: ended up going to the show, so he had a
- 2:22Speaker 1: good time.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I had a great time. And what's funny is I've
- 2:25Speaker 2: seen Steve Heidner. I was in studio with Patrick Warburton,
- 2:30Speaker 2: who was Putty. I saw John O'Hurley a number of
- 2:33Speaker 2: years ago when he was the host for Family Feud,
- 2:35Speaker 2: and I saw Seinfeld and stand up and opening for
- 2:39Speaker 2: him was Larry Miller, the door Man. So I've seen
- 2:41Speaker 2: quite a few of these Seiinfeld characters.
- 2:44Speaker 1: So this was like a comedy show and then like
- 2:46Speaker 1: a kind of like an asked me anything, and then
- 2:48Speaker 1: like a trivia session.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So he did like a half hour of
- 2:52Speaker 2: stand up, which was great and I wish you would
- 2:55Speaker 2: have done more of that, to be honest. And then
- 2:57Speaker 2: there was the Q and a Seinfeld trivia type of stuff,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and then he was around and you know, after the
- 3:03Speaker 2: show and all that, I had to make sure I
- 3:05Speaker 2: grabbed a shirt that said soup and it had an
- 3:08Speaker 2: X cross through it. I said, it's not a meal.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Awesome. Well that's uh. I'm glad you end up going
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's pretty cool. All right, let's get into this one.
- 3:16Speaker 1: This one's interesting because these four teams in the AFC South,
- 3:19Speaker 1: they all face Philadelphia this year. That is one of
- 3:22Speaker 1: their crossovers. Let's start with Jacksonville, who won the division
- 3:25Speaker 1: last year. Trevor Lawrence best season in his career thirteen
- 3:29Speaker 1: and four, second winning season in Jaguars franchise history. Last
- 3:35Speaker 1: year with Trevor Lawrence as the quarterback. You know, you
- 3:39Speaker 1: take a look at the second best season. They went
- 3:41Speaker 1: fourteen and two back at nineteen ninety nine. So this
- 3:43Speaker 1: is a pretty good year they're coming off. I feel
- 3:45Speaker 1: like there's not a lot of buzz around this Jacksonville
- 3:48Speaker 1: team as division champions thirteen wins. What can we expect
- 3:52Speaker 1: from Trevor Lawrence in that offense this year?
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Trevor Lawrence is an interesting player because he's sort
- 3:59Speaker 2: of horizing in the sense that Jacksonville has been in
- 4:03Speaker 2: the mix when he's been the quarterback Mike, but they
- 4:06Speaker 2: haven't really been able to take that next step. I
- 4:08Speaker 2: like him as a as a quarterback. I think he
- 4:11Speaker 2: has a really good arm and there there are moments
- 4:14Speaker 2: where you see him elevate his offense. He has some
- 4:16Speaker 2: good players to work with, and Brian Thomas at wide
- 4:20Speaker 2: receiver to Kobe Myers, I think is there and he's
- 4:23Speaker 2: a chain moving type of receiver there. But it's all
- 4:26Speaker 2: going to come down to Trevor Lawrence and really dialing
- 4:30Speaker 2: in with more consistency. Travis Hunter is going to be
- 4:32Speaker 2: moving to corner this year and focusing more of his
- 4:36Speaker 2: time there, so he will no longer be looked at
- 4:39Speaker 2: on the offensive side. But I like that Jacksonville team.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I think they're a little bit underrated.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Yeah. You take a look at, you know, the draft class,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and they didn't get high marked for the draft class.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They are pretty quiet in free agency. This is a
- 4:54Speaker 1: team that is almost sticking, sticking with continuity as the way.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And they got knocked out in the fron first round
- 5:00Speaker 1: last year. So you take a look at that defensive
- 5:02Speaker 1: side of the ball. They did lose Devin Lloyd on
- 5:05Speaker 1: that side of the ball, Greg Newsom, So you look at
- 5:08Speaker 1: look at their often. This seems like a team that's
- 5:11Speaker 1: tried to build off continuity from a year ago.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think that's a big part of it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: When you look at the the NFL in general, there's
- 5:20Speaker 2: a lot of turnover just around the league that I
- 5:24Speaker 2: think it really adds another layer to the questions that
- 5:27Speaker 2: teams face. Where Whereas when you look at a team
- 5:30Speaker 2: like Jacksonville, where they have that continuity, you feel a
- 5:32Speaker 2: little bit better about their prospects going into the year.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And some of these players that they have on their
- 5:38Speaker 2: offensive side aren't necessarily household names, but they they're They're
- 5:43Speaker 2: a quiet, quietly intriguing team. And I think it all
- 5:47Speaker 2: starts up front well, with Trevor Lawrence calling the shots
- 5:51Speaker 2: there quarterback.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And obviously Brian Thomas is the names of Kobe Myers
- 5:56Speaker 1: you mentioned, uh, and you take a look at their defense,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know you've got Trayvon Walker, Travon Walker, one overall pick,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Eric Armstead, a veteran player there, Travis Hunter who missed
- 6:06Speaker 1: all of last season. We'll see. I would imagine he's
- 6:10Speaker 1: gonna stick mostly to the defensive sides. It'll be interesting
- 6:13Speaker 1: to see him get a because they won thirteen games
- 6:15Speaker 1: last year without really his services.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Travis Hunter was one of my favorite players coming
- 6:22Speaker 2: out of the draft, and I viewed him more as
- 6:24Speaker 2: a corner, but he did he does offer dual purposes
- 6:29Speaker 2: and I think right now if you're Jacksonville, you just
- 6:32Speaker 2: want to You want to give the guy one position
- 6:34Speaker 2: to focus on rather than toggling between two positions both
- 6:38Speaker 2: sides of the ball, and I think that's probably the
- 6:39Speaker 2: right approach. They also re signed on Terrek Brown. That
- 6:43Speaker 2: was one of the free agent corners that I thought
- 6:45Speaker 2: may have been of interest for the Eagles. They ended
- 6:47Speaker 2: up getting Reek Wollen, of course, but yeah, you mentioned
- 6:50Speaker 2: Eric Armstead Trayvon Walker. They have some cornerstone pieces there
- 6:54Speaker 2: up front and that they can certainly lean on and
- 6:57Speaker 2: build around.
- 6:58Speaker 1: All Right, Jacksonvill wins it division last year, Houston got
- 7:02Speaker 1: a lot of buzz. CJ. Stroud looks to return. I
- 7:05Speaker 1: don't know. Would you say he took a step back
- 7:07Speaker 1: last year?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment, especially in the
- 7:12Speaker 2: postseason game in particular, where he just couldn't.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Get out of his own way.
- 7:16Speaker 2: But I'm not going to hide from the fact that
- 7:18Speaker 2: c J. Stroud is a player that I've been kind
- 7:20Speaker 2: of bullish on over the years, and I love the
- 7:23Speaker 2: receiving coy that he has, especially with Nico Collins. Nico Collins,
- 7:27Speaker 2: I think is one of the more underrated wide receivers
- 7:30Speaker 2: in the NFL. I think he's recognized properly in league circles,
- 7:34Speaker 2: but from a national perspective, I'm not sure that he
- 7:37Speaker 2: gets quite the recognition that he deserves. But he also
- 7:40Speaker 2: added David Montgomery in that offense, Mike, I think he's
- 7:44Speaker 2: going to be positioned to really thrive. What he marks
- 7:47Speaker 2: is a good backup that they have there. But think
- 7:50Speaker 2: the key addition to take some pressure off of CJ.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Stroud is going to be David Montgomery.
- 7:54Speaker 1: They did lose Christian Kirk Joe Mixon, the running back
- 7:58Speaker 1: as well, who obviously is a guy who when Cincinnati
- 8:03Speaker 1: was a pretty big time player for them. Their big
- 8:05Speaker 1: problem Andrew. They're lying stinks. Their thirtieth in pass block
- 8:09Speaker 1: win rate and their last in the league in run
- 8:12Speaker 1: block win rate, And I wonder how much that has
- 8:14Speaker 1: to do with c J. Stroud kind of looking for
- 8:17Speaker 1: redemption this year.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I would imagine so. And he looked at the
- 8:24Speaker 2: team in general and I thought they were going to
- 8:27Speaker 2: go a bit further than what they were able to
- 8:28Speaker 2: do offensively. They came up small. Their defense though, is
- 8:32Speaker 2: going to be their calling card, and they've added Reid
- 8:34Speaker 2: blanket Ship from the Philadelphia Eagles to a secondary that
- 8:38Speaker 2: has Caden Bullock. You already have Derek Stingley Petries one
- 8:42Speaker 2: of the better tackling defensive backs in the NFL. Will
- 8:46Speaker 2: Anderson leading the charge there as a pass rusher, I
- 8:49Speaker 2: think he's one of the best pass rushers in the game.
- 8:53Speaker 2: So I like the complimentary aspect that they have on
- 8:55Speaker 2: offensive defense, and I think the addition of Montgomery is
- 8:58Speaker 2: going to better balanced things offensively where you're not putting
- 9:01Speaker 2: too much on the shoulders of CD Strout.
- 9:04Speaker 1: By the way, Philadelphia will play Jacksonville in London. They
- 9:07Speaker 1: will play this Houston team on Christmas Eve. And that
- 9:10Speaker 1: defense that gave up seventeen point four points per game,
- 9:14Speaker 1: that was second best in the league only behind Seattle,
- 9:17Speaker 1: who ends up winning the Super Bowl. They were eleven
- 9:20Speaker 1: to zher when their offense score twenty points last season.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So as you just kind of talked about their defense,
- 9:26Speaker 1: Reid blanket Ship, as you said, is there is now
- 9:29Speaker 1: a part of this unbelievable Houston defense which the Eagles
- 9:33Speaker 1: will face on Christmas Eve this year. All right, let's
- 9:37Speaker 1: go to Indianapolis late in the season on a Saturday.
- 9:40Speaker 1: The Eagles will play the Colts they were seven and one.
- 9:43Speaker 1: They finished one to eight. Getting Daniel Jones back is
- 9:47Speaker 1: obviously imperative for this team.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, And Daniel Jones was an interesting story last year.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I think he's been, and rightfully so, a polarizing player,
- 9:57Speaker 2: not necessarily fulfilling expectation with the Giants, but it's never
- 10:02Speaker 2: one on one situation quarterbacks. You know, it takes all
- 10:05Speaker 2: three phase to.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Get it done.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But nevertheless, it seems like he's found a pretty soft
- 10:10Speaker 2: landing spot there with the Colts. They brought back out Pierce,
- 10:14Speaker 2: they have ty Tyler Warren at, Jonathan Taylor, Gwinton Nelson
- 10:19Speaker 2: Road greater upfront in the interior of their offensive line.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So the big question I'm still going to have, and
- 10:26Speaker 2: I think because the sample size wasn't large enough last year,
- 10:29Speaker 2: is Daniel Jones being able to replicate what he was
- 10:32Speaker 2: able to do. And I think because he's been such
- 10:36Speaker 2: a polarizing player in his career, it's hard for me
- 10:38Speaker 2: to fully dive in and believe in what I saw
- 10:41Speaker 2: last year. But what Shane Stike in the offense has
- 10:44Speaker 2: up their sleep?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Are you out on Anthony Richardson? Like if he had
- 10:49Speaker 1: a play do you think that he's a salvageable quarterback prospect.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Nah, I'm kind of out on him, Mike. I think
- 10:56Speaker 2: that a lot of his shortcomings have never totally been rectified.
- 11:00Speaker 2: I understand that he hasn't really been much of a
- 11:04Speaker 2: factor of late, but I just haven't seen him take
- 11:07Speaker 2: enough of enough steps forward to suggest to me that
- 11:10Speaker 2: he's ready to be a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL,
- 11:15Speaker 2: or even give adequate production if he has to step
- 11:18Speaker 2: in in the interim.
- 11:19Speaker 1: You think about this too, Andrew. They went eight and two,
- 11:22Speaker 1: they averaged thirty two points per game, and then went
- 11:26Speaker 1: ohen seven, averaging twenty points a game. They were the
- 11:29Speaker 1: first team ever to be six games over five hundred
- 11:32Speaker 1: and finished with a losing record. And they're the first
- 11:34Speaker 1: team since nineteen ninety five's Raiders to start eight and
- 11:37Speaker 1: two and missed the playoffs. So a lot of that too.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Their defense. They traded for Sauce Garter. They thought this
- 11:43Speaker 1: team was legit, but their defense had all sorts of
- 11:46Speaker 1: problems last year as well.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they were a leaguey group there, and
- 11:52Speaker 2: it's kind of surprising when you think of it, But yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 2: you mentioned Sauce Gardner. They lost safety Nick Cross and
- 11:58Speaker 2: free agency to the Washington Manners. I think Nick Cross.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I mentioned this with Jalen Thompson, the Cowboys safety if
- 12:06Speaker 2: they signed as well, but I think he is one
- 12:08Speaker 2: of the more underrated younger safeties in the league. Really productive.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I'm curious to see how they go about replicating that production.
- 12:16Speaker 2: But that they have, they have a lot of areas
- 12:18Speaker 2: of need there. I do like Justin Wallie, their nickel
- 12:22Speaker 2: corner out of Minnesota. He's been a couple of years
- 12:24Speaker 2: in now. I like him quite a bit coming out
- 12:26Speaker 2: of the draft and he's someone that I think stabilizes
- 12:29Speaker 2: that that nickel back role. But yeah, they still have
- 12:33Speaker 2: some room to grow there. I'm not quite sure that
- 12:36Speaker 2: they have enough on that side of the ball to
- 12:40Speaker 2: take it, to take it as far as they needed
- 12:42Speaker 2: to take it.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Also lost Michael Pittman to the Steelers. We talked about
- 12:46Speaker 1: him last week. Did draft CJ. Allen for the defense
- 12:49Speaker 1: of safety as well, so they did focus a little
- 12:52Speaker 1: bit on the defense side. The Eagles will face them
- 12:54Speaker 1: on Saturday this seventh of the nineteenth, and we know
- 12:58Speaker 1: one guy we didn't bring up, Jonathan Taylor. I mean,
- 13:00Speaker 1: he was the one bright spot on that team due
- 13:02Speaker 1: to absolute stud so they will probably look to get
- 13:05Speaker 1: him highly involved this year and TJ. Taylor Warren the
- 13:09Speaker 1: tight end is another guy who we didn't really mention
- 13:12Speaker 1: month there, but Warren and Taylor two of the better
- 13:14Speaker 1: guys that do it at their positions.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean when you have cornerstone players like that,
- 13:23Speaker 2: and Alec Pierce, whatever you want to say about him,
- 13:25Speaker 2: I don't know that he's a true number one, but
- 13:28Speaker 2: he's certainly being compensated as such. He's someone who can
- 13:31Speaker 2: stretch teams vertically. I like his catch ability. I think
- 13:35Speaker 2: he's probably more of a complimentary piece, But they have
- 13:37Speaker 2: players at premier positions that I think can be difference makers.
- 13:42Speaker 2: And it's all going to come down at Daniel Jones
- 13:44Speaker 2: and what they're going to be able to get out
- 13:45Speaker 2: of him. Will he revert back to his previous form
- 13:48Speaker 2: with the Giants or is he going to kind of
- 13:50Speaker 2: continue on where he left off with the Colts. And
- 13:53Speaker 2: I'm sure the Colts are banking on him returning to
- 13:57Speaker 2: form because they have enough pieces there I think to
- 14:00Speaker 2: be able to put up some points.
- 14:01Speaker 1: All right, Tennessee. The Eagles will play the Titans on
- 14:04Speaker 1: the twentieth of September, Week number two, and the biggest
- 14:09Speaker 1: question we all know Andrew is can this young offense,
- 14:13Speaker 1: cam Ward lead this offense to have a much better
- 14:17Speaker 1: season than they had a year ago.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm a little bit more optimistic on cam Ward
- 14:23Speaker 2: maybe then than some others are. And I certainly like
- 14:25Speaker 2: what they've done surrounding him with some talent. Carnell Tate
- 14:30Speaker 2: in the first round, and they have Calvin Ridley so
- 14:36Speaker 2: and Wandell Robinson they added as well, So he's gonna
- 14:40Speaker 2: have weapons this year. And there's not a lot of
- 14:42Speaker 2: excuses a hell up at running back. You look at
- 14:44Speaker 2: Tony Poward. I don't know that he's really gonna move
- 14:48Speaker 2: the needle. Tajay Spears is really an undersized player, a
- 14:51Speaker 2: complimentary piece, someone who can be a good pass catching
- 14:54Speaker 2: running back, you know, the create yards after the catch.
- 14:58Speaker 2: But I'm not overly in that they're running situation right now.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean you have to be enthused with
- 15:06Speaker 2: where they are with their receiving options.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned Ridley, I mean you got Wondell Robinson,
- 15:11Speaker 1: you brought in Ridley, they drafted Tate, Tony Pollard, So
- 15:14Speaker 1: we'll see there, But obviously the offensive line. That's one
- 15:17Speaker 1: of the problems when you get these teams with the
- 15:20Speaker 1: young quarterbacks, they generally don't have the offensive line to
- 15:23Speaker 1: stand up in front, so that's gonna be a big
- 15:25Speaker 1: factor there. They did hire Robert Salah, a defensive minded guy.
- 15:30Speaker 1: What do you like about this defense that maybe can
- 15:32Speaker 1: make them competitive?
- 15:35Speaker 2: Well up front John Franklin Myers, he's not talked about
- 15:39Speaker 2: nearly enough. You have Jeffrey Simmons, who's one of the
- 15:41Speaker 2: best interior linemen in football. And then on the back end,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I like Alonte Taylor who they signed. He's someone that
- 15:49Speaker 2: I think could make a little bit of a difference there.
- 15:52Speaker 2: He comes over from the Saints. This is going to
- 15:54Speaker 2: be in a more aggressive attack style defense. I think
- 15:58Speaker 2: with Robert Sala there with an edge and they should
- 16:03Speaker 2: have some energy. I still think that this is a
- 16:05Speaker 2: young team by and large, that they're not necessarily ready
- 16:09Speaker 2: to take the next step just yet. But I think
- 16:11Speaker 2: cam Ward in the offense, we'll take some will make
- 16:14Speaker 2: some encouraging strides forward and give Tennessee Titans fans something
- 16:18Speaker 2: to be optimistic about.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Solid defensive guy they got cam Ward. Brian Dable is
- 16:22Speaker 1: the new offensive coordinator in Tennessee, so he'll be kind
- 16:26Speaker 1: of working with the offense and Ward Sala with the defense. There.
- 16:31Speaker 1: The Titans are the worst team in the NFL over
- 16:33Speaker 1: the past two seasons, with six wins. They were last
- 16:38Speaker 1: or near the bottom in almost every single defensive category
- 16:42Speaker 1: last year, so we'll see if they can improve on that.
- 16:45Speaker 1: They play the Eagles in week number two. A look
- 16:48Speaker 1: at the Tennessee Titans. That is the AFC South. They
- 16:52Speaker 1: will play the NFC East this year. All right, Andrew,
- 16:55Speaker 1: if you take a look at those four teams, Jacksonville, Houston, Indiana, Tennessee,
- 17:01Speaker 1: how do you see them finishing?
- 17:04Speaker 2: Houston, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, Tennessee.
- 17:09Speaker 1: All right, so you're not buying a lot of these
- 17:11Speaker 1: people think Tennessee is one of those teams that go,
- 17:14Speaker 1: you know, from worse, play worse to maybe first or
- 17:16Speaker 1: even make a playoff. I hear a lot of people
- 17:18Speaker 1: jumping on the Tennessee. You don't seem to be following that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I'm with you. I don't see Tennessee making.

- 17:48Speaker 2: shaken now off of that playoff performance? And how much
