- 0:12And on this episode, I'm stepping out of
- 0:14the norm.
- 0:15Our guess is the daughter of of the
- 0:18inspiration of the podcast,
- 0:19which came about from a Tv pilot I
- 0:21shot in the nineties.
- 0:22She's my niece and the daughter of Van
- 0:25white,
- 0:26Gi giovanni Santa Pietro.
- 0:43Relatively famous podcast
- 0:45of Tim what.
- 0:47Hey, Gigi.
- 0:50Hey.
- 0:51Let's go.
- 0:52So hey. Welcome to my podcast.
- 0:55Cra is, this will probably be the longest
- 0:58singular
- 0:59conversation we've ever had in our life, which
- 1:01is kind of bizarre if you think about
- 1:02it.
- 1:03Seriously.
- 1:04You know, it's
- 1:06grown up when you were smaller,
- 1:09sadly that I was not mentally in the
- 1:11state to be a a
- 1:15bonding uncle and
- 1:18life and distances and everything is kind of
- 1:22We just haven't had a chance to have
- 1:23a really long conversation before, and I'm really
- 1:25excited about this.
- 1:28Him.
- 1:29Kinda give our our our viewers just a,
- 1:32your my niche, your van daughter, Give us
- 1:33just a little bit of history of, you
- 1:35know, kinda who you are.
- 1:38Well,
- 1:40probably still figuring that out, but
- 1:43I am gigi.
- 1:46I grew up in La,
- 1:49and
- 1:50I went to New York for school for,
- 1:53like, 5 years.
- 1:56And then
- 1:58I was doing art out there, and I
- 2:01like a lot of different forms of art,
- 2:03but
- 2:05I ended up coming back here
- 2:07to La for Covid, and then I started
- 2:10at feeling,
- 2:12which has been proven to be my favorite
- 2:15form of art.
- 2:16And, yeah. And that's where I'm not
- 2:19So I... I've no... I know you always
- 2:21drawn and and your...
- 2:23Your drawings are amazing.
- 2:26But what took you to Nyu to to
- 2:28New York.
- 2:33I
- 2:34honestly just loved the pace of the city
- 2:37and
- 2:40I
- 2:41want to want to be a small town
- 2:43person that I just can't. And My saw
- 2:45I need to be around, like, chaos and
- 2:49a lot of people
- 2:51and
- 2:52all that kind of stuff. So
- 2:54yeah, it seemed like a good fit, especially
- 2:57for been bringing out art and
- 3:00what is going on
- 3:02in the art world out there and stuff.
- 3:06So at at Nyu, what were...
- 3:09What was your life like? Could you were
- 3:11look, I know because I've traveled around little
- 3:13different place on the country to go from
- 3:15La
- 3:16to New York City is a huge difference.
- 3:18What was life like for you in this
- 3:20move? What? How did that
- 3:22change you?
- 3:25I think that,
- 3:29well, the city is, like,
- 3:31is so much more
- 3:33spontaneous,
- 3:34I guess, like, like the actual fabric of
- 3:36the city of New York is, like,
- 3:39you don't need to plan where you're going
- 3:41and put gas in your car and then
- 3:44drive
- 3:45at least 20 minutes every Everyone. It's like,
- 3:4720 minutes, you know, 1 way.
- 3:50And
- 3:52it kind of changed
- 3:54it made feel really free, especially when I
- 3:57was so young to do what I want
- 4:00and all that.
- 4:02But,
- 4:04yeah. I think that
- 4:06just the way that the city moves around
- 4:08is so
- 4:10like, inherently different than La, even though they're
- 4:13both big cities
- 4:14taught me
- 4:15a lot of freedom,
- 4:17sp,
- 4:19and there are
- 4:21characters there. There is just no avoiding it
- 4:23and so
- 4:25yeah. Learned a lot of good taste.
- 4:28What were what were some of your favorite
- 4:30experiences while you were in New York?
- 4:35I worked for,
- 4:40like, kinda loosely worked for
- 4:42a few artists out there, like, 1 was
- 4:45a gallery called Carriage Trade,
- 4:48and my boss Peter,
- 4:51I was really inspired by. It was it
- 4:53was this really cool gallery on the lower
- 4:55side, and,
- 4:57also this artist
- 4:59Lee Ja, who,
- 5:02he
- 5:03is like an Og 70 New York artist
- 5:07that just
- 5:09thinks
- 5:10really wildly and
- 5:14basically, yeah, it it let me know that
- 5:16you can be, like,
- 5:19just an art weirdo forever and like, it's
- 5:22okay. And you're still getting inspired people.
- 5:25That, you know, the next generations and stuff,
- 5:28so that a super is inspired.
- 5:32When When you were there, I think you
- 5:34were photography which a major? Or was that...
- 5:36Did you really got into photography? Did do
- 5:38you still do that some? Or is it
- 5:39an inspiration that you... An art you still
- 5:41practice?
- 5:44I love photography, and
- 5:47I love
- 5:48yeah.
- 5:49So much about photography, and I specifically, like,
- 5:52film photography where
- 5:55I think it's just like the poetic parts
- 5:58of it or you only have
- 6:0130 something shots and
- 6:04you know, you can't
- 6:06just shoot mindless. Like, I at least I
- 6:09do now on my iphone,
- 6:11and
- 6:13it really matters. You have to be, like...
- 6:15Or it matters to be looking
- 6:17at and focused on your shot because, you
- 6:20know,
- 6:21film is
- 6:23is not
- 6:24you can't take many photos this also.
- 6:27Yeah. And then, like, kinda of that medi
- 6:29part of being in the dark room and
- 6:32no phones allowed also there and just
- 6:36all that stuff. Like, there's, like, a magic
- 6:39tip film photography that I really love, but
- 6:42turning it into a career was
- 6:45hard for me because I didn't see
- 6:49a way where I could be totally myself
- 6:51doing the kind of photography I wanted to
- 6:54do,
- 6:56whereas with, like,
- 6:58drawing. It's a little
- 6:59different. You know, at least a tattoo. I...
- 7:03What? Speaking speaking of that, we'll we'll gear
- 7:07towards your your art and towards what you
- 7:09do now.
- 7:10But,
- 7:12talk about
- 7:13the inspiration for your art and and the
- 7:16inspiration for your career because
- 7:18you're gonna be my first tattoo is when
- 7:20I decide what I want.
- 7:24Well,
- 7:26honestly,
- 7:27drawing has always been my number 1 thing.
- 7:30Like, just... I've always been drawing. No matter
- 7:32what. And then
- 7:34I never in my mind like, oh, I
- 7:36wanna be a professional
- 7:38drawer, like, a drafts or whatever because
- 7:42then in my mind, that would just be
- 7:44me at home alone,
- 7:46looking for inspiration and
- 7:49whatever.
- 7:50It's seemed like a pretty lonely boring life.
- 7:53And
- 7:55then I had a bunch of ex boyfriends
- 7:58with pretty bad, and, not a much, like,
- 8:002. But with
- 8:03with pretty bad tattoos.
- 8:05And I was like, oh my god. I
- 8:07could totally do that. That is, like, what
- 8:09I could draw so which better. And then
- 8:12I started tattooing and I was like, okay.
- 8:15This is actually really hard. But
- 8:18we've been I've been working towards it, and
- 8:23yeah. It kinda just checked all the boxes
- 8:25for me in terms of, like, a job
- 8:27where I'm inspired by other artists around me
- 8:30on a daily basis. Like, I work at
- 8:32a shop. And
- 8:34it's be like, should I shade right here?
- 8:37Should I make this bigger? Is this place
- 8:39right? Like, I would go someone insane if
- 8:41it it's just me.
- 8:44And so it's just like...
- 8:46Yeah. You get to draw literally all day
- 8:49every day.
- 8:50And
- 8:51yeah, yeah, Just... It's kinda of just so
- 8:53where ridiculous feel... But, like, this ancient
- 8:57crap this, like, so beautiful. So that's kind
- 9:00of my whole rundown I how I got.
- 9:04There.
- 9:06So so you kind of
- 9:09kind of, I think you kind of walked
- 9:11into a shop said, hey, I wanna learn
- 9:12to do this.
- 9:15Kinda run run us through... Again... I've get
- 9:17pieces of your life through a little bit
- 9:19through you and through you your mom, run
- 9:21run it and and tell me
- 9:23tell us,
- 9:24I know where you work, but tell everybody
- 9:26else where you work if you want to.
- 9:28And
- 9:29and that they can see work. I know
- 9:30they can see your work on
- 9:33Instagram on your account kind of,
- 9:35do a little self promotion.
- 9:37Alright.
- 9:40Well,
- 9:41yeah Basically, I started
- 9:44during Covid,
- 9:48mom's friend to actually knew someone
- 9:51it owned a shop in Huntington,
- 9:53but it was, like Covid time, and I
- 9:55didn't wanna make anyone comfortable by going in
- 9:58there, and no 1 was really, like, even
- 10:01open.
- 10:03And so went down there and met the
- 10:05dude and
- 10:06we loved each other,
- 10:08still a and Danny Wild.
- 10:10And then,
- 10:12basically, after that, Was like, I need a
- 10:14move back to La, and
- 10:16my brother and Niko helped me print out
- 10:18a bunch of portfolios of my work.
- 10:21And then I went to,
- 10:24like, 45
- 10:26shops and dropped them off. And
- 10:29like it was literally 1 of 2. They
- 10:32called me back.
- 10:34And then, yeah. So Lincoln tattoo company
- 10:37in Venice,
- 10:39which is
- 10:40just like,
- 10:42I love everyone there. They're just... It's obviously
- 10:45I'm biased, but it's the best shop.
- 10:49Yeah. They called me back and
- 10:52kind of, like,
- 10:53took me on is, like, half apprentice half
- 10:57still
- 10:57doing walk ins and, like, able to tattoo.
- 11:01And I've been there for, like, 2 years
- 11:04and
- 11:05Yeah. You could check out my work on
- 11:07Instagram, gigi santo pietro trail.
- 11:11And yeah. It's just like, it's a big
- 11:13family there. There's, like, no drama.
- 11:16Who all like brothers and sisters, and which
- 11:19like, have a good time.
- 11:21It's like... It should be a sick homeowner.
- 11:24It's a really cool shop. I've been in
- 11:25there and
- 11:26met everyone, everyone seems super chill. They seem
- 11:28more like... You know, kinda protective of you,
- 11:31making sure you're Yeah. You're learning and no
- 11:33one's, you know, being a brick to you
- 11:36and... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The
- 11:39so if I... Would... If someone walks in,
- 11:41if I was to walk in and go,
- 11:42look, I've always wanted 1
- 11:45a think of something. I, oh, no. I
- 11:46don't if I can have that 1 that
- 11:47of my body forever.
- 11:49How do you kind of work with someone
- 11:51on on what they want? I mean, how
- 11:53do you... Because it's art, and it's forever
- 11:56sort of.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58That's such a good question. Like, honestly, if
- 12:01someone's unsure, I'm, like, just don't get it.
- 12:03Just like, you have so much. I
- 12:06like, it's such a permanent
- 12:08decision and stuff, Like,
- 12:10just
- 12:11wait on it and, like, make sure,
- 12:15and
- 12:16I probably won't say this, but at the
- 12:18end of the day, like, you're not gonna
- 12:20be in the same head space, and, like,
- 12:23whether it's a year or 2 years or
- 12:255 or 10 or 20, Like, as when
- 12:27you wanted that tattoo. So
- 12:30it's like always gonna change...
- 12:32Like, your mind is always gonna change around
- 12:34what you want, and I kinda think that
- 12:36that's what epic about them too where you
- 12:39can just choose something kinda knowing what your
- 12:41mind is gonna change and build like well.
- 12:44We we did it. But
- 12:48yeah. I think that
- 12:50if you are unsure,
- 12:52family
- 12:53is a great
- 12:54start, like, you know, mom, dad,
- 12:58son,
- 12:59all that.
- 13:01And then,
- 13:03yeah. Basically,
- 13:04maybe a really important date or something like
- 13:07that or, like, the typical mom heart is,
- 13:10like, can't go wrong.
- 13:13Like, yeah. So
- 13:15I Yeah. Okay. It's always like, an an
- 13:18individual case.
- 13:20No, That kinda when... I'm always fascinated the
- 13:23fact that you do this.
- 13:24Again, just because I don't have 1, it
- 13:25doesn't even have a thought of them. It's
- 13:27because... I'm always looking at them. I know
- 13:29people that... I know other artists, tattoo artists
- 13:31and stuff.
- 13:33What
- 13:34has been your
- 13:37most fun or most creative. What what
- 13:40sticks out in your mind of the work
- 13:41that you're like, oh, my god. This is
- 13:43the pinnacle for me at the moment because
- 13:45I know you're... You're growing and you're getting
- 13:47better. And we'll always continue to get better
- 13:49but at this moment, what? You, like, check
- 13:51this 1 out. This is the 1 that
- 13:52really
- 13:54and oh inspires me.
- 13:57There's like,
- 13:59there's definitely
- 14:00a few, but
- 14:04I've just always,
- 14:05like, since, like, a child just drawn women,
- 14:09like, their faces, their bodies, like, everything.
- 14:12It just it's, like, weirdly the thing that
- 14:14comes most naturally to me. Like, I don't
- 14:16need to reference
- 14:17or anything.
- 14:19And whenever I can do,
- 14:22anything involving a woman, and then usually something
- 14:25with, like, a skull or a rose or
- 14:27something like that and make it look a
- 14:30little... Darker because I feel like women are
- 14:32beautiful.
- 14:34Whenever there's that, like, just the position of
- 14:36a woman and then something darker is, like
- 14:38my ideal form. Of tattooing. I could literally...
- 14:41I feel right now tattoo women for the
- 14:44rest of my life, like, if that's all
- 14:45that I could do, I would have so
- 14:47much fun doing that
- 14:49And so...
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:51Probably 1 of the women with the roses
- 14:53is are on the skulls
- 14:56or something like that.
- 14:58Okay. That may be my first choice and
- 15:00when I come in. Oh
- 15:02let's let's switch a little bit.
- 15:05You look. So much like your mother when
- 15:06she was younger and and our mother, your
- 15:09grandmother.
- 15:11Oh,
- 15:12which it's it's
- 15:14kind of starting to look at.
- 15:16What's what it like growing up as a
- 15:18as a Hollywood kid.
- 15:22So
- 15:23it's it's so wild because
- 15:27I
- 15:28would like, ask someone the same thing
- 15:32because I did grow up around, like, other
- 15:34famous kids and all that.
- 15:37But... And I don't know if they would
- 15:38say this too, but, like, I genuinely
- 15:41feel like, my mom is so down to
- 15:44earth and like,
- 15:45normal that I never
- 15:48felt like I was
- 15:51like a famous kid, Like, you know, wheel
- 15:54fortune would come on to be like, well,
- 15:55I just wanna see my dress and we
- 15:57have to change a channel like, when Not
- 15:58been watch that. You know? Like, and just
- 16:01like, her daily activities artists so
- 16:05not what even I would imagine, like, a
- 16:08famous person would
- 16:10do. And so it's kind of like, I
- 16:13felt like, pretty normal despite the, like,
- 16:17groups
- 16:18that I grew up around that we're definitely,
- 16:20like,
- 16:22just, you know, it's like, all these
- 16:25famous people's kids or something like that. Which,
- 16:28like,
- 16:29I don't know. It felt very, like, normal,
- 16:32but I also saw, like, people whose,
- 16:36moms get, like, glam up before going to
- 16:39the grocery store and stuff, but it's like,
- 16:42that's
- 16:43wild, but he says for that, like, I
- 16:46think in my home, it was totally normal.
- 16:49Maybe that I don't know. But
- 16:51I saw, like, other people having kind of
- 16:54that, like, more glamorous
- 16:56like style, but, yeah. I think I pretty
- 16:59much stayed out of the
- 17:01limelight or the proximity of it and stuff,
- 17:04but, yeah. I don't know.
- 17:08Yeah. Why I remember going to into a
- 17:09couple of your birthday parties when you were
- 17:10younger and and the people that were there
- 17:13and kind of, like,
- 17:14just... And it was just kinda, yeah, obviously,
- 17:16normal in your life. That's And so you
- 17:19also... You had this huge Hollywood
- 17:22La life going on.
- 17:24But I know that Van always had a
- 17:26connection with home.
- 17:28And you guys would been Summers in North
- 17:30Myrtle Beach you and Nico and for years.
- 17:33What was some... What was that like, going
- 17:35from La?
- 17:36From the left coast to the from the
- 17:38West Coast of the east Coast.
- 17:42I
- 17:43loved Myrtle Beach. Shit. I feel like there's
- 17:45just, like,
- 17:47So, you know, in that way, it's not
- 17:48that safe to, like, just walk around,
- 17:51and, like, your parents don't really know where
- 17:53you are but trust that you're gonna be
- 17:55good.
- 17:56You know, walking down, like, Main street or
- 17:58whatever whatever. Like, I don't really think there's
- 18:00an equivalent
- 18:01La for where I grew up in La.
- 18:04It's also separated
- 18:06and, like, you have can drive there and
- 18:07whatever. So for me, it was just like,
- 18:10all the good things. There's the beach.
- 18:13Like, you know,
- 18:14great food and just, like, freedom to walk
- 18:17around and be a kid and stuff. So
- 18:19those were, like, for sure the highlights of
- 18:22my summer
- 18:23just
- 18:26yeah. Honestly, Myrtle Beach feels
- 18:29like,
- 18:30home and a, like a second home and
- 18:33a sense of, like,
- 18:34just
- 18:35how familiar and safe and all that.
- 18:39That it feels
- 18:40definitely a good break from
- 18:42the Chaos of La to go there and
- 18:45all that. Yeah. It was I love Myrtle
- 18:47beach.
- 18:48Now you know your mom is gonna correct
- 18:50you and say north Myrtle Beach. Yeah.
- 18:54Yeah. For sure.
- 18:57So
- 18:59you're your
- 19:02your dad lives in Thailand. Right?
- 19:05Do you guys get to travel to... Talk
- 19:06about, you know, the relationship that that it
- 19:09with your dad and your brother and kind
- 19:12of... That... Because that's a whole different.
- 19:15Side of Hollywood and in life.
- 19:18Yeah.
- 19:20My dad is
- 19:24living in Thailand and he's just like,
- 19:27honestly
- 19:29a big
- 19:30inspiration because I hope I can be, like,
- 19:34he party's harder than me. Like, well, his
- 19:37job is to party.
- 19:39Yeah. It's basically... It's 1 of those jobs
- 19:41where you're working
- 19:43for sure. But you're also
- 19:45in a cool ankle club. It's pretty cool.
- 19:47So what you've... I know you've gone to
- 19:48visit. What what was
- 19:51what's Thailand life? Or what was Bangkok like
- 19:52for you?
- 19:57For me, it felt like New York on
- 20:00steroids.
- 20:02It was just
- 20:03so
- 20:04packed,
- 20:05so much movement,
- 20:07chaos, like,
- 20:09like, so many different smells and tastes and
- 20:13I unfortunately didn't go to, like, the islands
- 20:16which I really wanted to go to is
- 20:18beautiful
- 20:19beaches and stuff. But the center of town...
- 20:23Yeah. It was just it was wild and
- 20:25chaotic, which I feel like is where I
- 20:27thrive, but
- 20:30it... Yeah. Just bunch of great food and
- 20:33parties and
- 20:36there's a lot of cool parks,
- 20:38but, yeah. I was kinda just, like,
- 20:41walking around all day. I didn't have too
- 20:43many plans. Just went out there to see
- 20:45my dad. So
- 20:47it was really cool.
- 20:49So
- 20:50as we're getting waiting close to wrap up
- 20:52here,
- 20:53what what's your desire for the future? I
- 20:55know you love tattooing, Do you see a
- 20:57offers So what what do you see for
- 21:00yourself
- 21:01in in in the next 20, 30, 40,
- 21:0450 years?
- 21:06Oh,
- 21:09in
- 21:10in the next few years at least, I'd
- 21:13love to like, travel around to different cities
- 21:16where fine line
- 21:18black and gray tattoo and is
- 21:21popping off.
- 21:23Or any style tattooing.
- 21:25Honestly, just travel around and meet a bunch
- 21:27of people,
- 21:28and then
- 21:30maybe
- 21:31way down the line in the future,
- 21:33open up a shop
- 21:36or something like that, but
- 21:39it would have to be, yeah, many, many
- 21:40years down the road. But
- 21:43for now, yeah, just have a good
- 21:45time and travel around and be, like, inspired
- 21:48by
- 21:49different artists all around the world that have
- 21:52that, like, super nerdy passion that I have
- 21:55to.
- 21:58Just... It's like a super fun thing to
- 22:00geek out on,
- 22:02And,
- 22:03yeah, Probably
- 22:05maybe
- 22:06do some other
- 22:07business things regarding art, and
- 22:11creating some sort of space for artists where
- 22:13they could sell their art and not get
- 22:15robbed and stuff
- 22:18but definitely have no idea to be totally.
- 22:22Hey. You're in your twenties. You don't need
- 22:231II
- 22:24noticed you mentioned.
- 22:26Gray and black and gray tattooing.
- 22:30Is that where you
- 22:32kind of planned to stay focused, are you
- 22:35wanna... Or you want to
- 22:37delve into color. I mean, because some of
- 22:38the some of the... Your arts beautiful. It's
- 22:41very cool. It's blend black and white. Would
- 22:43it be different in color? I mean, some
- 22:45of the color things just kinda blow me
- 22:46away too or they kinda make it look
- 22:483 d and stuff. So
- 22:50what's your title on that?
- 22:52I mean, honestly, my goal is to be
- 22:55jack of all trades,
- 22:57master of black and gray.
- 23:00But
- 23:02I... Yeah. I tried to pride myself in,
- 23:05like, having a street shop
- 23:07basis
- 23:08of my craft where
- 23:11whatever anyone wants walking through the door. I
- 23:14somehow am able to give it to them,
- 23:17which is a pretty new thing in tattooing
- 23:19as opposed to, like, well, if it's not
- 23:21on the wall, we don't have it, you
- 23:23know, like,
- 23:25Yeah. And Hardy did lot to change that.
- 23:28And
- 23:29I...
- 23:30Like, my joy in tattooing is being able
- 23:33to give people what they want.
- 23:35And so
- 23:36I definitely, like,
- 23:40I love using color. Actually, it's so fun.
- 23:43It feels kinda like violent. You have to
- 23:46really get it in there, but, like, usually,
- 23:48it's always a super fun time, and I
- 23:51would love to
- 23:53do color for sure. But I I also,
- 23:56right now, which is always bound to change,
- 23:58which I... Is why I love tattooing.
- 24:00I'm just super into fine line black and
- 24:03gray, kind of glossy, Chromium, little nineties
- 24:07s
- 24:08designs and stuff that just brand new joy
- 24:10right now.
- 24:11I love that tagline. Jack of all trades
- 24:13with master of black and gray. I love
- 24:15that.
- 24:17Alright. Have... I have 1 last question how
- 24:18I I tried in the last question on
- 24:20on all the podcasts is,
- 24:23what did I not ask
- 24:24or did we not cover that you really
- 24:26want to share?
- 24:33Well,
- 24:35Hey. That's a that's a hard 1.
- 24:41I don't know. You asked a lot of
- 24:42really good questions.
- 24:47Oh,
- 24:48well, maybe just like as a Psa for
- 24:51anyone
- 24:53watching this.
- 24:56Like, if you are curious about getting a
- 24:59tattoo,
- 25:00I highly recommend doing your research on the
- 25:02artist
- 25:03and see if they match your style,
- 25:07it because you could walk into a shop
- 25:09and you have no idea what you're gonna
- 25:11get, you know? And so, yeah, Definitely do
- 25:14your research
- 25:16make sure you like them and their style
- 25:19more importantly.
- 25:20And,
- 25:21yeah. Definitely
- 25:23stay your research.
- 25:25That's that's a great Psa because how many
- 25:27drunken tattoos they've shown up. That's probably... When
- 25:301 time I was about got 1 was
- 25:31on sunset, Boulevard a position where I shouldn't
- 25:34have been drinking and go, hey.
- 25:35What about that 1? Thank god it didn't
- 25:37happen, but hey.
- 25:39Yeah.
