- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another little German adventure? Luna: Absolutely. I've been practicing the directions from last time, but I'm ready for something new. Lucas: Yesterday I was thinking about how we talk about time. And I thought we could tackle two simple words: morgen and gestern. Luna: Oh, I've heard those. Morgen is tomorrow, right? Lucas: Exactly. And gestern is yesterday. Let's start with morgen. Say it with me: morgen. Luna: Morgen. Morgen. That's kind of like 'morning' in English, but it means tomorrow. Lucas: Right, and also 'morning' in some contexts, but today we're focusing on tomorrow. So, if you want to say 'I am coming tomorrow,' you say: Ich komme morgen. Luna: Ich komme morgen. That's not too hard. Ich komme morgen. Lucas: Perfect. Now, what about yesterday? Gestern. Ich war gestern da. That means 'I was there yesterday.' Luna: Ich war gestern da. Hmm, 'war' is like 'was' in English. So 'ich war' is 'I was.' Lucas: Exactly. Now let's put them together in a tiny scene. Imagine a friend asks you, 'Wann kommst du?' – when are you coming? You say, 'Ich komme morgen.' Luna: Ich komme morgen. Und wenn sie fragt, 'Warst du gestern da?' – were you there yesterday? You say, 'Ich war gestern da.' Lucas: Very good. And there's a nice phrase: 'Bis morgen!' – see you tomorrow. It's like 'until tomorrow.' Luna: Bis morgen! Oh, that's friendly. I could use that with my friends. Lucas: Definitely. So, let's review. Morgen – tomorrow. Gestern – yesterday. Ich komme morgen – I am coming tomorrow. Ich war gestern da – I was there yesterday. Bis morgen – see you tomorrow. Luna: Morgen, gestern, ich komme morgen, ich war gestern da, bis morgen. Got it. Lucas: Great. Now, let's do a quick practice. I'll say the English, you try the German: 'I am coming tomorrow.' Luna: Ich komme morgen. Lucas: Perfect. 'I was there yesterday.' Luna: Ich war gestern da. Lucas: Excellent. And 'see you tomorrow'? Luna: Bis morgen! Lucas: You're nailing it. Luna: Okay, so if I want to say 'I am coming tomorrow,' it's 'Ich komme morgen.' And if I want to say 'I was there yesterday,' it's 'Ich war gestern da.' Lucas: Exactly. And don't forget 'Bis morgen!' – see you tomorrow. That's a great way to end a conversation. Luna: Bis morgen! That's also a nice thing to say to you at the end of this episode. Lucas: Ha, indeed.
