- 0:02Speaker 1: How did it happen? How do we get here to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the third hour of the program? I don't I don't know,
- 0:08Speaker 1: but here we are, third hour Wednesday. It is the
- 0:13Speaker 1: third Wednesday of the month, and that means it's time
- 0:15Speaker 1: for little personal defense and once again being pressed into duty.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's Jadie Johnson of the Talent Trading Group, co host
- 0:24Speaker 1: of Talent Outdoors. How are you, sir? I'm great. You
- 0:27Speaker 1: got the short straw twice this month. It happens you
- 0:32Speaker 1: weren't supposed to quite go along with that quite so easily.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I'm not gonna fuss about it, all right, put my
- 0:36Speaker 2: head down and go forward.
- 0:37Speaker 1: That's what we do, all right, Let's get right to it.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna share a couple of different stories from the
- 0:42Speaker 1: news that I that I have here and just kind
- 0:45Speaker 1: of get your reaction to them. You might be familiar
- 0:48Speaker 1: with the stories, you might not. Teenager returns an air
- 0:51Speaker 1: soft handgun allegedly to the store where he was buying
- 0:57Speaker 1: where he bought it. However, the gun was in his pocket.
- 1:04Speaker 1: He had a friend that had an air soft handgun
- 1:07Speaker 1: in his jacket. There was a third team there in
- 1:12Speaker 1: the parking lot, though, is a gentleman that was doing
- 1:19Speaker 1: what he called overwatch. Overwatch is apparently kind of a
- 1:23Speaker 1: military term for observing for activity. His son was in
- 1:30Speaker 1: a judo thing, doing his thing. So he's just waiting
- 1:33Speaker 1: in the parking lot, just kind of observing, and he
- 1:35Speaker 1: sees these kids, and he sees one of them with
- 1:39Speaker 1: the handgun that is an airsoft, but he doesn't know
- 1:42Speaker 1: that at this point, and he thinks he's about to
- 1:45Speaker 1: witness an armed robbery. He intervenes, wrestled one kid to
- 1:54Speaker 1: the ground. They're all telling him these are bb guns.
- 1:58Speaker 1: We're just returning him to the store. He's still in
- 2:01Speaker 1: an engaged battle when one of the kids turns to
- 2:07Speaker 1: walk away and he shot him seven times in the back.
- 2:14Speaker 1: A lot went wrong there. I'd like you to just
- 2:18Speaker 1: kind of address all that is going on with just
- 2:21Speaker 1: the surface level info I just gave you and what
- 2:24Speaker 1: your thoughts are.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Well, it's a horrible situation, start with.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I mean, that kid's dead.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no bringing him back. No, you know, it's
- 2:36Speaker 2: I get it. I mean there's there's times, there's times
- 2:38Speaker 2: when I sit in the parking lot when my family's
- 2:41Speaker 2: in the store and I don't I don't think out loud,
- 2:44Speaker 2: or think even subconsciously.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I got to be overwatched. But that's what I'm doing.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I'm just sitting there in the car because I don't
- 2:51Speaker 2: feel like walking around the whatever store they're in and
- 2:53Speaker 2: looking at shoes or clothes or whatever.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You're paying attention to. You're paying attention to anything anyone
- 2:59Speaker 1: else would not be paying attention to.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Right and knowing the quality and appearance of a lot
- 3:06Speaker 2: of these airsoft guns, they are very realistic, made to
- 3:11Speaker 2: look like a myriad of handguns. We've used them in
- 3:15Speaker 2: training scenarios for a long time. The air soft glock
- 3:21Speaker 2: airsoft pistols look close enough to a glock that glock
- 3:26Speaker 2: sued them over it and they fit in glock holsters.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They look just like glocks except for a little small
- 3:31Speaker 2: round a piece of orange around the style. Well, you've
- 3:36Speaker 2: got an orange buzzle on the barrel. Got your guns
- 3:39Speaker 2: not painted orange? It's just a little ring of paint
- 3:42Speaker 2: around the end of the barrel that comes off basically,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and then you have what it looks enough like one
- 3:50Speaker 2: that if you pointed at me and I would probably
- 3:52Speaker 2: react similarly to the way he did.
- 3:56Speaker 1: This story has earmarks of George Zimmerman all over it.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, but in today's world, I don't think
- 4:04Speaker 2: the guys initially not doing anything wrong. He may have
- 4:07Speaker 2: been better off to I, you know, hindsight being twenty
- 4:10Speaker 2: twenty and it always is, he should have picked up
- 4:14Speaker 2: the phone and called instead of intervening. Unless his family
- 4:16Speaker 2: was in that store.
- 4:18Speaker 1: They were not.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, so your there's your first, his son's over there
- 4:23Speaker 2: be a good witness, is what I it at Bullstown instead,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, unless now we don't know what he did
- 4:28Speaker 2: for living. If he was off due law enforcement, he
- 4:31Speaker 2: may feel a duty to act. He was not, then
- 4:34Speaker 2: you really that's one of those times where we say, yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 2: you may have the legal authority to intervene, it may
- 4:42Speaker 2: not be the smartest or best thing to do. At
- 4:44Speaker 2: that point, I probably would have called law enforcements that, hey,
- 4:46Speaker 2: you got two guys that are armed walking into this business.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Clearly if the young man, extending benefit of the doubt,
- 4:55Speaker 1: were returning these things to.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Find hard to believe, you too, very hard to even.
- 5:00Speaker 1: But you put that in the bag and you walk
- 5:02Speaker 1: in with him in the bag, and no one ever
- 5:04Speaker 1: sees you got them, and you go from there.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It tucked in your waistband is a good way to
- 5:08Speaker 2: not you know.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But would it have been also smarter if this guy
- 5:12Speaker 1: really was concerned just go in the store and wait
- 5:15Speaker 1: to see what happens, if you felt needed to do that,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and let the manager know what you observed outside. Absolutely,
- 5:20Speaker 1: that's that was my point. Because he's probably going to
- 5:24Speaker 1: prison for the rest of his life.
- 5:26Speaker 2: There is that possibility for sure. He also has a
- 5:29Speaker 2: very valid defense. As bad as this is, he's got
- 5:34Speaker 2: a very you know, if he truly believed that he
- 5:37Speaker 2: was intervening in a armed robbery that was about to happen,
- 5:41Speaker 2: at least by Florida law, he hadn't stepped outside the bounds.
- 5:46Speaker 2: He hadn't hadn't gone out of bounds on that yet.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah. I maintained that if you look at a lot
- 5:52Speaker 1: of the things that happen, and there are lessons to
- 5:55Speaker 1: be learned all over. Yeah, and sometimes they're just really
- 6:00Speaker 1: a good lessons. Sometimes they're really bad lessons. But every
- 6:03Speaker 1: lesson is every every opportunity to learn is something that
- 6:08Speaker 1: I think we should take advantage of. Now, this one,
- 6:11Speaker 1: this story from the news, We're going to contrast this
- 6:14Speaker 1: story because in this case, this one's pretty clear cut.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Guy's with a contractor and they're looking over their backyard.
- 6:23Speaker 1: They're inside the house, and he sees a man with
- 6:25Speaker 1: a dog come into his backyard with a machete. The
- 6:32Speaker 1: guy appears to pass out and he's on the ground,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and the homeowner contractor alarmed, then see him immediately jump
- 6:46Speaker 1: up and start making his way upstairs to a back door,
- 6:50Speaker 1: trying to gain entry into the home. Homeowner confronts him,
- 6:56Speaker 1: locks the doors, make sure because the kids are home,
- 6:59Speaker 1: get that's his nine milimeter, and confronts the guy. It
- 7:04Speaker 1: doesn't say whether it confronted him through the door, whether
- 7:06Speaker 1: he opened the door, what have you. The guy drops
- 7:10Speaker 1: the machete, backs down, obeyed verbal commands. Everybody lives to
- 7:17Speaker 1: see another day.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, how we react has everything to do, and I'm
- 7:23Speaker 2: glad it worked out that way. I'm glad that the
- 7:25Speaker 2: homeowner was there to see to see all this going
- 7:28Speaker 2: on and stop that guy from getting inside the house
- 7:31Speaker 2: with a machete, because you don't ever know how that's
- 7:33Speaker 2: going to end.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It could be bad. Yeah, I mean, that's not your
- 7:37Speaker 1: standard carry a piece of equipment if you're just you know,
- 7:40Speaker 1: some dude out there walking his dog. Yeah, no doubt.
- 7:44Speaker 1: But let's let's let's dig a little deeper. Let's talk
- 7:47Speaker 1: through the what if scenarios and the actual best practices.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Let's set aside that he had another guy with him
- 7:57Speaker 1: that I think immediately was calling or somebody was calling
- 8:01Speaker 1: nine to one one, so they got the guy, and
- 8:03Speaker 1: everything's fine in that regard. You're inside, bad guys outside.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Do you open that door, even if you have a firearm.
- 8:11Speaker 2: No, not, if I don't have to, absolutely not, It's
- 8:14Speaker 2: gonna stay locked. And there's you can you can have
- 8:18Speaker 2: a conversation through the door, through other side of the
- 8:21Speaker 2: window or whatever, especially with technology nowadays. I mean, you
- 8:26Speaker 2: can have a conversation with somebody at your front door
- 8:28Speaker 2: sometime not even home.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah you're in another country.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah so but yeah, I mean it's it's absolutely the
- 8:35Speaker 2: goal of any of this stuff is survival for you
- 8:37Speaker 2: and your family. And anytime we can not have a
- 8:42Speaker 2: physical conflict that the winning goes up, the winning percentages
- 8:47Speaker 2: are automatically gonna go up. Because it's kind of like
- 8:49Speaker 2: the old adage that nobody truly wins in a fight,
- 8:52Speaker 2: and that's a gunfight included, you know, gunfight, physical fights,
- 8:55Speaker 2: any of that kind of stuff. The only way to
- 8:57Speaker 2: truly win is not to happen.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Obviously, the perpetrator obeyed the verbal commands and did as
- 9:04Speaker 1: was demanded of him, and and honestly, then you just
- 9:08Speaker 1: kind of hope maybe this guy's hopped up on something
- 9:11Speaker 1: and he gets some help and everybody lives to have
- 9:13Speaker 1: a better life.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, And unfortunately, in today's world, that is a lot
- 9:17Speaker 2: of what we're dealing with is chemically induced psychosis of
- 9:20Speaker 2: some kind or other that's getting people to act outside
- 9:23Speaker 2: their norm.
- 9:24Speaker 1: But best case scenario in that setting, your inside doors
- 9:28Speaker 1: are locked, you have a firearm, call the police and wait,
- 9:31Speaker 1: don't confront.
- 9:32Speaker 2: The drawbridge is up on the castle. Stay in the castle, you.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Know, go on the other inside of the moat. Leave
- 9:41Speaker 1: them on that.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely, I mean that's where the castle doctrine comes from.
- 9:46Speaker 2: In your castle, stay there if you can, and defend
- 9:48Speaker 2: it as best you can.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Twenty one past the Hour back with Jad Johnson of
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Talent Training Group, our Personal defense segment. All Right,
- 9:55Speaker 1: we've talked about a couple of stories in the news.
- 9:57Speaker 1: This is more of a general topic JD inspired by
- 10:01Speaker 1: the news and inspired by things that I've just witnessed
- 10:04Speaker 1: and watched and then now as I'm aging, starting to wonder.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You know, you and I are both bigger guys, but
- 10:11Speaker 1: I also know we're both going to get older. And
- 10:15Speaker 1: I got to thinking, what are the best things for
- 10:19Speaker 1: someone to think about as they age, to not put
- 10:24Speaker 1: themselves in a spot where they're more likely to be
- 10:27Speaker 1: a victim.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, my first piece of advice was, uh,
- 10:33Speaker 2: don't go alone. You know, don't go fill in the
- 10:37Speaker 2: blank wherever you're going, wherever you're going, don't go along.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, I think about my mom.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And and you know she is, she ages, and with her,
- 10:48Speaker 2: you know, some of her physical you know, fragility.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I guess as she gets.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Old, she's eighty years old, she's gonna you know, we
- 10:55Speaker 2: all are going to physically deteriorate as we get older.
- 10:58Speaker 1: That's part of part of the process.
- 11:01Speaker 2: You know, I'm not at fifty six and with a
- 11:05Speaker 2: bunch of metal parts, a bunch of bionic parts of me.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I'm not as you know, I'm not as much of
- 11:11Speaker 2: a force as I was once upon a time kind
- 11:14Speaker 2: of thing. So you know, you just have to think
- 11:16Speaker 2: about that and plan ahead. And you know, it's kind
- 11:18Speaker 2: of Like I tell my mom, I said, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 2: if you need to go somewhere, especially in a in
- 11:23Speaker 2: a part of town that's not as safe as others,
- 11:27Speaker 2: wait till one of us can go with you. You know,
- 11:30Speaker 2: let us we'll go with you, you know, to look
- 11:32Speaker 2: out for you. And that's not always gonna happen. There's
- 11:36Speaker 2: times that you know, so it's just using your brain,
- 11:39Speaker 2: using your wisdom. As you age your wisdom and your
- 11:43Speaker 2: life experience, don't put yourself in those positions where where
- 11:50Speaker 2: confrontation might be more likely.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I guess this might be really touchy, but in your
- 11:57Speaker 1: experience at the Range, I know that you have trained
- 12:03Speaker 1: and your team have trained a lot of senior adults. Absolutely, JD.
- 12:08Speaker 1: What's the cutoff where you say to yourself, I need
- 12:11Speaker 1: to say something, or my guys need to say something
- 12:14Speaker 1: to this person because they probably shouldn't be carrying.
- 12:18Speaker 2: It's just a it's a it is absolutely a case
- 12:21Speaker 2: by case basis. There's times when we've had people in
- 12:23Speaker 2: the classes that just said, this is not this is
- 12:26Speaker 2: not where you need to be, this is not for you.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You know, are there some commonalities to that? No, really not.
- 12:36Speaker 2: It's a combination of can I physically manipulate a self
- 12:41Speaker 2: defense weapon? Do I have the strength? Do you know,
- 12:44Speaker 2: do I have the strength to manipulate the firearm if
- 12:47Speaker 2: you're to control it once you're once you shoot it,
- 12:50Speaker 2: get it loaded, get it unloaded, handle it safely. There's
- 12:53Speaker 2: physical requirements there. The other side to it is the
- 12:57Speaker 2: is am I mentally or is that person mentally sharp
- 13:00Speaker 2: enough uh to understand? Which is why we do the
- 13:04Speaker 2: scenario based training and we pay close attention to your
- 13:07Speaker 2: performance and when when we're sitting there doing that scenario
- 13:11Speaker 2: based kind of stuff, and you know, you don't want
- 13:15Speaker 2: to create vigilantes like our like our first story, that's
- 13:20Speaker 2: that's that's not good. That's not good for any of
- 13:22Speaker 2: us as gun owners when that kind of stuff happens.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And we don't want to see somebody get in trouble.
- 13:29Speaker 2: So it's all about having the correct attitude and we
- 13:32Speaker 2: get people in there from time to time. We have
- 13:34Speaker 2: seen people in there from time to time that are
- 13:36Speaker 2: looking for looking for a fight, and that's not good.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 13:42Speaker 2: That person probably doesn't if you're getting a gun because
- 13:45Speaker 2: you want to go pick a fight, that's the wrong
- 13:47Speaker 2: reason to have a firearm or have.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a big time red flag.
- 13:53Speaker 2: So you know, it's it's it's all about those. You know,
- 13:58Speaker 2: some people physically may be fine, mentally mental capacity may
- 14:03Speaker 2: be not good and vice versa.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Thirty five minutes after the what's making you laugh? Now?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Why'd you make yourself laugh? I thought you were gonna
- 14:16Speaker 1: do it? You thought I was that. I thought you
- 14:18Speaker 1: were gonna know. I'm gonna avoid it this whole time. Okay,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and then we're back for you wouldn't be the same,
- 14:29Speaker 1: all right. J D. Johnson in this morning from the
- 14:32Speaker 1: Talent Training Group Talent Range, and uh, let's get to
- 14:34Speaker 1: the range. Let's let's talk training and what are some
- 14:38Speaker 1: ways for senior adults to train in such a way
- 14:41Speaker 1: that obviously they're improving their skill set, but also doing
- 14:45Speaker 1: a little self analysis and making sure they're still capable
- 14:51Speaker 1: of doing what is needed if they need to.
- 14:56Speaker 2: One of the things you can do or and this
- 14:57Speaker 2: is for everybody, not just seniors, but of the things
- 15:00Speaker 2: you can do is is we sell and rent outlawn
- 15:04Speaker 2: out shot timers pack timers, which is it's a little device.
- 15:09Speaker 2: It's a timing device. It hears, it hears gunshots and
- 15:14Speaker 2: you can set it up to where it will give
- 15:16Speaker 2: you a beep or a prompt. They use them for
- 15:17Speaker 2: competitions primarily, but people that are really into training, a
- 15:22Speaker 2: lot of people even on them themselves where they don't
- 15:24Speaker 2: have to borrow ours and hope that ours are going
- 15:26Speaker 2: to work because they don't last forever. They're they're not
- 15:29Speaker 2: I wouldn't say they're fragile, but they're electronic devices.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't.
- 15:33Speaker 2: You can't beat them around too much and expect them
- 15:36Speaker 2: to work. But the point is that it gives you
- 15:38Speaker 2: a prompt and then it starts a timer when it
- 15:41Speaker 2: gives you the prompt at times, and it will give
- 15:44Speaker 2: you a mark on there. It'll tell you you can
- 15:46Speaker 2: go back and look at.
- 15:47Speaker 1: It'll tell you.
- 15:48Speaker 2: When your first shot happened, and when your second shot happened,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and when your third shot happened, and it'll give you
- 15:54Speaker 2: a time frame that you're working with. So it adds
- 15:57Speaker 2: a little bit of stress if you're trying to push yourself.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And I'm not you know, and I'm not talking about
- 16:01Speaker 2: fast raw competition or anything like that. I'm just saying
- 16:04Speaker 2: it will give you a time frame from the first prompt.
- 16:07Speaker 2: It took me two and a half or three seconds
- 16:10Speaker 2: to get the gun out on target and fire the
- 16:12Speaker 2: first shot, and then it was another second between the
- 16:16Speaker 2: first shot and the second shot, and so forth. It
- 16:18Speaker 2: establishes a benchmark for yourself, right exactly, and it will.
- 16:24Speaker 2: It makes you think about timing and speed and speed
- 16:28Speaker 2: and accuracy. It makes you it makes you think about
- 16:31Speaker 2: those things.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And that's does that in and of itself raise your
- 16:35Speaker 1: stress level a little bit absolutely.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Okay, that's exactly where else going with this is that
- 16:39Speaker 2: is a stress inducer for a lot of people. Sure,
- 16:42Speaker 2: people that shoot really well. I've seen it through the
- 16:45Speaker 2: years in law enforcement. They shoot perfectly fine if it's
- 16:49Speaker 2: a casual, a casual stuff at the range, shooting a target.
- 16:53Speaker 2: The minute you tell them, okay, we're going to test
- 16:55Speaker 2: your speed and accuracy and you've got to do this
- 16:57Speaker 2: drill in less than three seconds and you've got to
- 17:01Speaker 2: get two hits out of three and lessen and they're
- 17:04Speaker 2: just their world just explodes, you know, I mean, the
- 17:07Speaker 2: they it's because it's self induced. It's self induced stress.
- 17:12Speaker 2: So that's one of the ways we can by doing
- 17:15Speaker 2: that is we're inducing a little bit of stress of
- 17:17Speaker 2: performance stress. So I think those are very useful training tools.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And one of the issues that we see with seniors
- 17:28Speaker 2: is the manipulation of the firearm itself. It's not once
- 17:32Speaker 2: you get the gun out, once they get the gun
- 17:34Speaker 2: out and all the you know, have all the time
- 17:36Speaker 2: in the world to do that. A lot of guys can.
- 17:39Speaker 2: A lot of seniors can still shoot really well. Sure,
- 17:42Speaker 2: it's the speed and the you're you're you're combining the
- 17:46Speaker 2: mental side with the physical side, and that's where you
- 17:49Speaker 2: start to see And I personally, I'll tell you this,
- 17:52Speaker 2: I've slowed down a lot from what I was, from
- 17:56Speaker 2: from where I was when I was younger. I'm still
- 18:00Speaker 2: pretty fast because I was really fast when I was younger,
- 18:03Speaker 2: but I have slowed down.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Some there were you know, it's it's and I.
- 18:07Speaker 2: See that in myself at fifty six years old, I've
- 18:10Speaker 2: started to slow down some.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Do you think it's due to dexterity issues or just.
- 18:14Speaker 2: You know a little bit of everything. I mean, arthritis,
- 18:17Speaker 2: you know, arthritis in the hands.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I was going to ask you about that. Arthritis.
- 18:21Speaker 2: You know, our our our mental capacity is not what
- 18:25Speaker 2: it was. The neural pathways have aged. Sure, now I'm
- 18:30Speaker 2: probably a lot smarter than I was when I was
- 18:32Speaker 2: younger too, and I you know how to work around
- 18:36Speaker 2: those things. And the way we do that is through
- 18:38Speaker 2: planning and through understanding and you know of how we're
- 18:43Speaker 2: going to react to things. So it kind of evens
- 18:46Speaker 2: out in the big picture, It kind of evens out.
- 18:49Speaker 2: But I think that that's one of the best things
- 18:51Speaker 2: we can do to in training is to induce always
- 18:55Speaker 2: have some sort of stressor unless you're just out there
- 18:58Speaker 2: to relax, if you're.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Just plinking target, it's have fun and playing targets.
- 19:01Speaker 2: I mean, when I want to have fun shooting, I
- 19:03Speaker 2: go over to the to the to the skeet field
- 19:05Speaker 2: or sporting plays and I shoot play targets.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So you know.
- 19:08Speaker 2: But when I'm training, it's it's a serious thing, absolutely,
- 19:12Speaker 2: you know. So anyway you gotta, you gotta when you
- 19:16Speaker 2: go into it.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah, because it needs to be. Because one of the
- 19:18Speaker 1: fundamentals we first talked about years ago when we started
- 19:21Speaker 1: these segments. You don't aim a gun at a target
- 19:23Speaker 1: you're not willing to shoot and fire on and kill. Absolutely,
- 19:26Speaker 1: So yeah, serious stuff, all right. When we come back
- 19:30Speaker 1: maintenance back with J. D. Johnson of the Talent Training group.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Remember you can go online talent range dot com learn
- 19:41Speaker 1: more about all of the UH. It's a great place
- 19:43Speaker 1: to shoot. It's just I can't stress enough how nice
- 19:48Speaker 1: it is to shoot there and UH with ranges in
- 19:51Speaker 1: midway and Dothan maintenance is it's a necessary evil, right absolutely.
- 20:01Speaker 1: But you hear different people say different things about how
- 20:05Speaker 1: often you got to break down a gun versus just
- 20:11Speaker 1: surface cleaning or running something through that. Talk us through
- 20:14Speaker 1: the what you think are the best practices on maintaining
- 20:20Speaker 1: and let's just keep it simple for now. Your handgun, first.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Of all, use products designed for cleaning a gun. It'll
- 20:31Speaker 2: you know, some sort of some sort of gun, don't.
- 20:35Speaker 2: One of the things I see that will completely stop
- 20:38Speaker 2: guns is the use of things like not knocking the product.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Because they make some good products, but the.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Old WD forty.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Really bad idea to put that on your gun, especially
- 20:50Speaker 2: on the internals of the gun, because over time it
- 20:52Speaker 2: can turn into a varnish. It gets gooey and sticky
- 20:57Speaker 2: time if it's left on the gun, and a lot
- 20:59Speaker 2: of people will ray it in there and just leave
- 21:01Speaker 2: it and think, okay, well my guns, it's it's a lubricant.
- 21:04Speaker 2: It's a penetrant. It does some of the good things,
- 21:07Speaker 2: but you can't leave it on the gun. So get
- 21:09Speaker 2: gun cleaner, a gun oil, a cleaner, lubricant protecting gun all.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Well, I was just gonna ask you, is there a
- 21:14Speaker 1: difference between like and I'll use a brand name CLR.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It says cleaner, but it's also lubricant. Is it both?
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yes, there's there's more than one. There's not just a
- 21:26Speaker 2: brand of c l R. There's there's a lot of
- 21:28Speaker 2: different brands of of cl RS. And it'll say on
- 21:31Speaker 2: there it'll say, you know, cleaner, lubricant, protecting, and.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But but there isn't an all in one. Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 2: They are okay, they are they they work well. Uh,
- 21:41Speaker 2: the break free products, the cleans oil products, those are
- 21:45Speaker 2: really good all in one. You don't have to buy
- 21:47Speaker 2: separate stuff. Uh, there are some gun oils or oil.
- 21:52Speaker 2: As I say it, Uh, there's I can talk right
- 21:55Speaker 2: if I need to.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But he's betrayed himself with that one. It's all I
- 21:59Speaker 1: come from. It's them all.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So there's gun oil that's neither a cleaner nor a protectant.
- 22:05Speaker 2: It's just a lubricant. So pay attention to what the
- 22:08Speaker 2: product is that you're using. Another problem I see is
- 22:12Speaker 2: that people go way too far taking their gun apart,
- 22:16Speaker 2: so they bring it up to me in a box to.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Put back together.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yeah, most of the time, when you buy a firearm,
- 22:21Speaker 2: it's gonna come with a user's manual that will show
- 22:24Speaker 2: you how to feel strip the gun and tell you
- 22:26Speaker 2: where to put the lubrication. Don't go overboard with it.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I see that a lot where it's just I was
- 22:33Speaker 2: just stripping wet and I'm gonna throw the term that.
- 22:36Speaker 2: You know, some guys think they're really mainly using this term. Yeah,
- 22:39Speaker 2: I got my gun nice loubed and wet. Got a
- 22:42Speaker 2: wet loobed gun.
- 22:43Speaker 1: You know, and sloppy wet oil loubed is bad. Some
- 22:48Speaker 1: guns need that or want that. Are they older guns?
- 22:51Speaker 2: Yeah, nineteen eleven's are notorious for a lot of time
- 22:55Speaker 2: wanting to be really very oily. That can cause problem
- 23:00Speaker 2: and some other guns. And it also can cause a
- 23:02Speaker 2: problem for the shooter because now you've got a gun
- 23:05Speaker 2: that's slathered with a lubricant. You need you need to
- 23:08Speaker 2: rack the slide and your handslips off, so it can
- 23:11Speaker 2: induce problems in other ways.
- 23:13Speaker 1: JAD, Is there a difference between field stripping and just
- 23:16Speaker 1: you've gone to the range, you've fired a few shots,
- 23:18Speaker 1: you're just gonna do a simple cleaning.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you can. There are some there are
- 23:25Speaker 2: some firearms, and every farm is different, but yeah, there's
- 23:29Speaker 2: times when you go to the range and you just
- 23:30Speaker 2: want to take a spray some colr on a cop
- 23:35Speaker 2: rather on a cop.
- 23:37Speaker 1: On a rag and very is what I was thinking.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Uh, cop on a on a rag and
- 23:42Speaker 2: wipe it down, wipe the carbon off. You're gonna have
- 23:45Speaker 2: carbon fouling, you know when you shoot just part of
- 23:48Speaker 2: part of shooting, run a boar, snake down the boar,
- 23:51Speaker 2: wipe it down. I recommend at least about every four
- 23:55Speaker 2: or five hundred rounds doing a field strip, getting all
- 23:58Speaker 2: the carbon off, getting all the old old all off
- 24:01Speaker 2: of there, and putting new oil on there because oil
- 24:04Speaker 2: does attract carbon foutling and dust and dirt. So you know,
- 24:09Speaker 2: it's just it's a good practice to be in. You
- 24:12Speaker 2: don't have to go do a thorough breakdown cleaning every
- 24:15Speaker 2: time you shoot the gun, and you can, you can
- 24:20Speaker 2: overdo it, and that's that's the problem we see a
- 24:22Speaker 2: lot is that people, you know, keep putting oil on
- 24:25Speaker 2: and never take the old stuff off using something a
- 24:29Speaker 2: product like a there's some guns grubber, Yeah, that will
- 24:32Speaker 2: completely de oil everything. You can't just spray that on
- 24:35Speaker 2: there and I'm done. Now you've got to go back
- 24:37Speaker 2: and reapply the lubrication.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Good stuff. Good visit today, Thanks sir, Thank you. JD.
