- 1:53in beautiful Union, West Virginia, beautiful part of the world. And remember
- 1:57there's not a Palmar store near you now, there will be soon. Little
- 2:00traffic. Note I was a little delayed getting in here this morning, as
- 2:02we're just about anybody that travels I sixty four east that there was a tractor
- 2:07trailer accident of some sort that happened near the Institute exit, and last time
- 2:12I checked, which was just before I went on, it was still very
- 2:15slow moving in that area. So if you're gonna be traveling eastbound into Charleston,
- 2:19expects some delays this morning while they are trying to get that cleaned up.
- 2:23We'll try to have an update on that, and I'm sure that we
- 2:24will own the news a little bit later on, but you may want to
- 2:27take a different route, maybe get off on one of the other exit st
- 2:30Albans or Nitro or whatever it takes to get you into Charleston if you're traveling
- 2:35eastbound this morning. Coming up on the show, we've got Debt to get
- 2:38to. Kathy hess Krouse was into Parmar Store studio. We'll talk to her
- 2:40a little bit later on. Also doctor Tooms Smith, you know, talk
- 2:44to Tom Williams. I'm not sure who doctor Tom Smith is. Doctor Williams,
- 2:47who is the superintendent of Conall County Schools is going to join us talk
- 2:51about the upcoming school year, and a little later on. Our good friend
- 2:54Jim Workman from Wiley and Whimpie's Football Digest is going to stop by as well,
- 2:59but we're gonna play a little tourism game now this morning, I want
- 3:00to welcome into the show Alexandra. Alexandra Post, who is the marketing and
- 3:07aggratourism manager for Grit's Farm, which is near Buffalo in Putnham County. Alexander,
- 3:12good morning, how are you. Good morning, Dave. I'm well,
- 3:15how are you. I'm doing fine. Thank you for being here.
- 3:16Now, before we get into what you're actually here to talk about, there
- 3:20may be some that aren't familiar with Grit's Farm, which is it's surely a
- 3:24treasure here in West Virginia. So just give us a little bit of a
- 3:29background, little history behind the back Grits Farm why this is such a big
- 3:31deal for West Virginia. Sure, Gritz Farm is located in Putnam County,
- 3:37West Virginia. We are in Buffalo and we're currently a three season plant and
- 3:43produce farm, but we're also an aggratourism farm. So we like to put
- 3:46on lots of fun events throughout the year, and our most popular, well
- 3:52known event would be Grits Fun Farm that takes place each September and October,
- 3:57so it is a six week falsell. We have about thirty different attractions for
- 4:03family and friends to come and explore. There's about three hundred acres on our
- 4:09property, so there's lots going on. We have pumpkin patches and a corn
- 4:13maize and great places to eat and rides and gain. So we typically see
- 4:19people come from all fifty states to visit Grits Fund Farm each fall. And
- 4:25we're really excited for our season that we've got coming up here starting September sixteen.
- 4:29And you're gonna need some workers or we're gonna get into that of just
- 4:31a little bit. But I didn't want to say this. I actually mentioned
- 4:33this, I think on the show last week. But I moved to Putnam
- 4:38County, Alexander, and I moved nine years ago there. I did not
- 4:40realize, I guess what a big deal the Grits Farm was. That was
- 4:44until I started hearing from a lot of my friends from all over the state
- 4:47about taking their kids and grandkids there to visit and the field trips and whatever.
- 4:55Again literally from all over the states. And you're saying, not just
- 4:58all over the say of West Virginia. You're talking about fifty states coming here
- 5:01for these things. Yes, yes, sir, we're really grateful for that.
- 5:05And over the years, we try to add something new or a couple
- 5:10of new things every time so that way people aren't getting the same experience.
- 5:14We're always trying to elevate whatever it is that we're doing, and we just
- 5:17wanted to be a special place for families and kids. And as you mentioned,
- 5:21we do school tours on weekdays and then we're open to the public on
- 5:26the weekends. And again, the reason I have you here to talk about
- 5:29this day is because you need workers. You got to have people to pull
- 5:32this off. Talk about that we sure do, yep. So we are
- 5:36hiring currently for our fun Farm team, and we have many positions available.
- 5:43So we're looking for everybody from admissions to help with ticket check in attractions,
- 5:48to help monitor our playground, food and beverage. We've got lots of sweet
- 5:54treats and we can't put them out there unless we have great people to help
- 5:57us do it. So we're looking for front and back of house workers as
- 6:00well as down to general labor. Tractor drivers to help drive people to and
- 6:05from all of the amazing attractions that they'll experience, and how many people are
- 6:11we looking for? Just give me a ballpark figure. I know you'll take
- 6:13as many as you can get, but just what would you like to have?
- 6:15Ideally we love to have one hundred. One hundred is a great number
- 6:18for us. Yet what kind of wages we looking at? So we start
- 6:23at ten dollars per hour and it's a great seasonal position for those looking for
- 6:28a little bit of extra work, whether it's their first job and they just
- 6:31want to have something fun to do outdoors, or they may even be retired
- 6:35and just want to save up some money for the holidays. So we have
- 6:39a little bit of something for everybody. It's a really fun job, and
- 6:43we offer some special tickets and perks. Joe, Yeah, I want to
- 6:46get into those perks. I'm all about the perks. So if I go
- 6:49to work out there, if i'm if i'm and by the way, what
- 6:54what's the age minimum here? What do you have to have to be at
- 6:56least? What aged to work there? Fifteen years old? All right?
- 7:00So whether I'm fifteen or eighty five, you're going to give me some perks
- 7:03if I come to work there for this right. Absolutely, absolutely, everybody
- 7:06gets the perks, no matter the age. But we have a discount on
- 7:11our food and other items that we offer, and we also do special ticket
- 7:17perks and passes for families and the employees themselves, so they will get to
- 7:25not only experienced Grits Fun Farm, but they'll get to share tickets with family
- 7:29and friends as well. But for our high school and college students, specifically
- 7:35specifically high school seniors, we do offer a scholarship fund program. So any
- 7:43tips that we received during Grits Fun Farm at any of our food locations,
- 7:46anytime a tip is put into a tip jar, we add that money up
- 7:50at the end of every week, and then at the end of the season,
- 7:54all of that is tallied and dispersed amongst select high school seniors in college
- 8:01students. Wow, they work for us, our employees. Yes, So
- 8:05what if somebody can only work a certain amount of hours. I know you
- 8:07need workers for all these different hours, but what if somebody comes to you
- 8:11and says, you know, I'm a college student and because I can only
- 8:13work these two days a week, or I can only work evenings, or
- 8:18I can only work well, are you willing to work with our schedules.
- 8:20Yes, yes, we are very flexible with scheduling as long as we know
- 8:24ahead of time. We like to give everyone the breeding room to work around
- 8:28their schedules, and we have many different shifts available, for example, Wednesdays
- 8:33through Friday mornings. This year we're going to be offering school tours, So
- 8:37if they just want to work a certain school tour days in the mornings,
- 8:41that's fine. If they can only work Thursday and Friday evenings to the general
- 8:45public, that's fine. Or Sundays only Saturday Sundays only. We're really flexible
- 8:50with it. We just ask to be notified in advance. So when the
- 8:54kids come there, the school students, and they come in there field trips,
- 8:58what seems to be the highlight for them, Oh, my goodness,
- 9:03probably the goats. The goat visits that we do. Everybody loves beating the
- 9:09goats, and last year we built our goats at brand new goat barn facility
- 9:16that's beautiful and huge and they have all the room to frolic and be fed
- 9:22by the public. But when we do school tours during the weekdays, they
- 9:26are so excited to pet the goats and be able to see them, Well,
- 9:28it sounds like it's a great time. And again you're looking to hiring
- 9:31a bunch of people for this, and this would be you know, this
- 9:35is not necessarily going to be a retirement kind of career, but if somebody's
- 9:39looking for what I would think is a fun job, especially if you're more
- 9:41of an outdoors person. And again we're talking about hiring some younger people and
- 9:46you can go as as as young as fifteen. But this will be a
- 9:50great job, especially when it comes for the school tours and whatnot. Would
- 9:52be a great time, a great job for somebody that's retired, you know,
- 9:56just looking for a little extra income. It's maybe supplement their retirement and
- 10:01i'd have something something fun to do in the in the outdoors in the fall
- 10:03months. Absolutely. Yeah, there is something for everybody, and we encourage
- 10:09anyone that's interested to apply online at gritsfarm dot com. The application is on
- 10:15our main home page there and on our job page, and we've made some
- 10:18announcements on our site. Actually this week, we've got a season pass flash
- 10:24sale going on right now, so you can actually start to see a little
- 10:26bit of what we're going to be offering for the fall season and get a
- 10:30season pass Flashdale if you're interested. Sounds good, Alexander, I have to
- 10:33ask you, you're a veteran out there, what's your favorite part of Grits
- 10:37Farm. I think that's a great question. Seeing the people, seeing the
- 10:43people come and just the joy that they have when they're on the farm and
- 10:48adding something new every time. But aside from that, it has to be
- 10:54the food that we offer and the creativity that goes behind it with our team.
- 10:58And we're in the process of testing some recipes. What every day?
- 11:05I mean, do you need some people to help with that, because my
- 11:07producer Ryan and I would be all about that if you need day Okay,
- 11:11all right, what kinds of foods do you have there? Oh? We
- 11:16have everything from what we're probably most known for are the fresh cake doughnuts that
- 11:20we have, and then we'll have some barbecue. We do chicken and fries
- 11:26and all of the festival foods. We do, homemade cookies and pepperoni rolls.
- 11:33Okay, all right, you can stop now, you can stop now.
- 11:35Okay. I know it's a little early, but it might be time
- 11:39for lunch. It's never too early for lunch, Alexander. I appreciate you
- 11:43taking time to join us talk about this again. Great opportunities. You need
- 11:46to hire a bunch of people out there. So whether you're high school,
- 11:50whether you're college, whether you get into you know, people that are retire
- 11:52just anybody wants a little extra income and to be able to do it in
- 11:56a fun, fun atmosphere out there with Grits and have all these people coming
- 12:01from all fifty states to come out there and taking all the festivities and all
- 12:03the school kids and whatnot. Give us the website again and tell us about
- 12:07the application process for these jobs. Yep, absolutely so anyone can apply online
- 12:13at gritsfarm dot com now through the end of next week. We have our
- 12:18team orientation next Saturday, so we definitely encourage you to apply as soon as
- 12:24possible. It's a very simple process. Just it takes a few minutes to
- 12:28complete and they can always reach out to us directly if they have any questions.
- 12:33All right, well, I have a question for you that will send
- 12:35in via the text line here, so you're already getting your own text here,
- 12:37Alexandra. So someone wants me to ask you, do you have a
- 12:41design for your corn maze and how does the maze work. We do have
- 12:46a design for the corn Maze and we're very excited about it this year.
- 12:50So there was a certain popular movie that was just released within the last couple
- 12:56of weeks, and it is inspired by this movie and the design. The
- 13:03steam rather is called farmy Land. So if you're a farmy girl in a
- 13:09farmy world, you need to come. You need to come to Grit's Fun
- 13:13Farm and experience the Corn Maze. It falls. Look even I know what
- 13:16you're talking about. And I'm the most dense person in the world when it
- 13:18comes to pop culture, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Alexandra.
- 13:22We wish you the best with everything. We'll have you on again maybe
- 13:24at some point, maybe you're in the middle part of the process, and
- 13:26give us an update on how things are going. I appreciate them. It
- 13:30sounds great. Thanks day. Alexandropost who as a marketing and agriturism manager for
- 13:35Grit's Farm in Putnam County. Big things going on there and Ryan, they
- 13:37said they may need somebody to sample food to, you know, kind of
- 13:41do quality assurance. I think I like the part where they said that they
- 13:45have the goats are the highlight and that they just get the frolic and eat
- 13:50all day. I mean, that's got radio written all over right there.
- 13:54But the Alexander just doing a great job out there with the folks of Grit's
- 13:56Farm. We appreciate her taking time at her schedule to be here today.

- 17:15always easy to get along with, at least for me anyway. Maybe not
- 17:18her fellow legislators, but I'm kidding. She gets along with everybody. They'll
- 17:22get to Kathy hess Cross, how are you, dear? I'm doing great
- 17:25day. How are you doing the day? I'm doing fine, Thank you.
- 17:27Na. That's sort of kind of your part of the world over there.
- 17:30Will you serve over at Grits Farm area? Yes, I do so.
- 17:33Well, what do you think of Gritz Farm? I love it out
- 17:36there. They have a beautiful place. And you know what, they're growing
- 17:38pineapples out there now too. They're growing pineapples out there now, and there
- 17:45are greenhouses and stuff. They've been doing pineapples and everything too. Okay,
- 17:49what's your favorite part of Gritz Farm? Oh? When you get to shoot
- 17:55the apples when they do of course, of course it is of course,
- 18:00of course, it is getting getting to shoot and blow things up. That's
- 18:03what Kathy has crowds on today. I mean, how can you how can
- 18:07you have more fun than that? Well, there you go, there you
- 18:08go. Nothing says fun, you know, quite up like blowing things up.
- 18:14U promo there Ryan on that. You know. Kathy always like to
- 18:19talk to members of our legislature, but I especially like to talk to you
- 18:22folks during the so called off season, because I think that there is this
- 18:27idea that the men and women of the legislature worker sixty day session and then
- 18:32that's it. Uh, most, if not all, the legislators have full
- 18:36time jobs outside the legislature and course families and all the other responsibilities. But
- 18:41you do a lot of legislative working during the non session months, suit meeting
- 18:45with different groups and constituents and stuff. Yes, well, just like yesterday,
- 18:52what was yesterday? Third? Yesterday was Wednesday? Yes, thank you?
- 18:56After they do. Tuesday afternoon I had my wins say finally free and
- 19:00open. I had a few things I was going to be able to work
- 19:03on still for the legislature, but I had it open to work on things
- 19:07all day, and by late Tuesday, I had had a nine am phone
- 19:11call schedule. I had a constituent that had an issue needed to talk to
- 19:17me about it, so I got on a phone call with them at nine
- 19:21am. Eight am, though, I had another phone call from someone within
- 19:25the area also want me to come and visit the the War Memorial Museum at
- 19:30Nitro they were having an open house. Went and stopped also. While I
- 19:36was there, ended up talking to the fire chief in Nitro because that's although
- 19:41he's right outside my district, he covers my district and I needed to talk
- 19:44with him about things with the fire bills we just passed. I had to
- 19:49go to the capitol for a little while pick up some information that I needed
- 19:53for the previous phone call that day. I finally called it quits about five
- 19:59pm him and sat down by my fault, by my pond to relax for
- 20:03a few minutes. So that was my day off. But I had nothing
- 20:06to do, and then you went and did family things after that, you
- 20:08know. So the reason and the reason I bring that up is because you
- 20:11know, no matter who the legislator legislator is, I think people do have
- 20:15a tendency to think, well, you know, they only worked during the
- 20:19session. Your phone, and I've known this from several of the state senators
- 20:23and delegates, and I'm friends with your phone probably rings more during the non
- 20:27session than what it does during the session. And that's what you're here for.
- 20:32I mean, that's what you did. That's what you that's what you
- 20:33signed up for. A matter of fact, I was talking to one of
- 20:37your fellow delegates yesterday. We were having a conversation and he was telling me
- 20:41about when he first went into the legislature that he'd had a particularly bad day
- 20:47and then he went into the speaker's office and told him about his day,
- 20:52and the speaker said, well, you signed up to have days like these.
- 20:53Yeah, exactly. It never stops. I have I will wake up
- 20:59some mornings and have and see that I have had text messages at three am
- 21:03in the morning. Yeah, I mean, it goes all day long,
- 21:07all night long. But we are constantly working and working on different things,
- 21:12different issues. Lord knows. I'm constantly on the phone with d Oh trying
- 21:18to get road issues taken care of and problems. So it's it's not a
- 21:22sixty day done kind of thing. It's is all year long. I put
- 21:27more hours in than anything. Now, you just wrapped up a special session
- 21:33which coincided with interims last week. Your thoughts overall on the special session and
- 21:37the interims. It was fast and furious, it's one way to put it.
- 21:41Yet, we had forty four bills and out of that I believe we
- 21:45passed thirty five of those. Okay, So we took care of some issues
- 21:51with corrections. We have more to take care of during next session. We
- 21:55took care of some problems with fire volunteer fire depart months. We still have
- 22:00some more to do on that next session too. So both of those will
- 22:03be worked on on this off time that we supposedly do nothing. So we
- 22:10have a lot that we do, and we had a lot that we got
- 22:12done during something. What do you think about that? You called it that
- 22:15lightning quick session, because there's been people that that have said, you know,
- 22:19that maybe it went a little bit too fast, and others said that
- 22:22this is what they're supposed to do. What was your overall take on a
- 22:26little bit of both. Okay, it was, like I said, it
- 22:29was fast and furious, but on the House side, we still took it
- 22:33seriously. Our bills were referenced to committees to make sure you know, they
- 22:40were what they were supposed to be or if we needed to make any change
- 22:44off yes, okay, well it's my watch going on, all right,
- 22:51I've just put it on. I'll put it under my legs right there.
- 22:55But we sent ours to committees. The only ones that we passed on that
- 22:57first day were ones that we had already passed in the previous session, or
- 23:03they were some fixes like to the tax the personal property tax code, because
- 23:07that's kind of a I want to say it was a mass. It was
- 23:10just kind of confusing for a lot of people. I know, Hoppy spent
- 23:11several days talking about it, trying to trying to make people understand it.
- 23:17And I'll be honest with you, I've listened to Hoppy every day talking about
- 23:18I'm not so sure that I still understand you know the way, but hopefully
- 23:22we'll be able to get that straight out again. We're talking with Dela get
- 23:23Kathy hess Krause here on five eighty Live. You mentioned corrections and also foster
- 23:30care. I'll throw that in there. Those are two of the big items
- 23:33that seem that seemed to be creating a lot of and we had a lot
- 23:37of good things going on in West Virginia right now, We've got a long
- 23:38way to go as far as the corrections and the foster care system. Care
- 23:41to comment on either one of those and some of the things that you'd like
- 23:45to see happen. The foster care system I believe needs a complete, in
- 23:48total overhaul. I've had well, I've had three calls this week alone on
- 23:56CPS issues, so I need, I know, we need to work with
- 24:00CPS and children that are being removed that shouldn't be removed. Maybe they need
- 24:03watched over a little bit more, but shouldn't be removed from their homes,
- 24:08and then those that do need removed from their homes. We need to figure
- 24:12out how to get more foster parents. But there's a big problem there is
- 24:19it takes so many hours to get approved for foster care. I had looked
- 24:23into it many years ago, but with my husband's full time job and I
- 24:29had kids at home at the time, I had all five of mine at
- 24:32home at the time, it was impossible to do. I think it was
- 24:36probably close to forty hours worth of training and stuff, and I was already
- 24:41raising kids. And then some of the special things we had to do around
- 24:45our farm that just wasn't cohesive to farm life. It made it difficult.
- 24:51So there's a lot of things, a lot of stipulations they put in place
- 24:55that I think they could probably change too to enable more people to become foster
- 25:00parents to help alleviate that. And then, of course the big thing lead
- 25:06into foster care is the drug problem we have. And as much as I
- 25:10want to fix that, I'm at a loss on how we go about fixing
- 25:14that. At times, it is so bad and it's everywhere, and everybody
- 25:18has it that where it has touched their lives one way or there's not a
- 25:21person out show that hasn't had somebody that's that's touched their lives. I've told
- 25:26you stories people in my family as well, talking with Delna get to Kathy
- 25:29Heskrouss. You know, another big economic announcement came out yesterday in an area
- 25:33close to where you serve, a major operation going into Mason County. And
- 25:38there's a complete story about that available at the website wv metronews dot com.
- 25:41But overall, it's more good news for the Mountain state. Looks like,
- 25:45yes, it looks like, you know, close to a thousand permanent jobs
- 25:48once it's done. Thousands. I think it was like fourth out a little
- 25:52over four thousand construction jobs in the process. And it's great for Putnam County
- 25:57because we are that wonder full bedroom community and we have quick and easy access
- 26:03to Mason County, Cabell County, Kanall County, and we have the we
- 26:07have the land for the growth and Putnam County is one of I believe that
- 26:12eight growth counties in the state and it's a wonderful county to live in.
- 26:19I grew up here in Kanall County, moved to Puttnham twenty two years ago,
- 26:22and I know I'll never move out. That's where everybody should come live.
- 26:27You're like a part time employee the Chamber of Commerce there exactly. But
- 26:32you know I'm gonna ask you this question too. Why do you think the
- 26:34Republicans are just dominating the political landscape in West Virginia. I mean, because
- 26:38you and I are both old enough to remember when it wasn't that way,
- 26:41when the Democrats ruled West Virginia for well over eighty years, and now we've
- 26:45done a complete flip on that. Why, in your opinion, is the
- 26:48conservative message resonating so well with voters. I think it's because West Virginia always
- 26:55had those conservative values and the left has went so far left. They are
- 27:02out there with the transgender surgeries and transitions, you just name it. And
- 27:08the left is so far out there that those who just cannot look at that
- 27:15side and say, you know, I agree with that, They just they
- 27:18can't do that, and they want what the conservatives have and what we're doing
- 27:23and what we stand for. We're bringing in jobs, we're bringing in money,
- 27:27we're making the state better, and they look at that and they can
- 27:32see that we've made some great changes over the last what almost ten years we've
- 27:37been in control. It's been slow at times, but we've got eighty three
- 27:41years to clean up. So but I think people are really seeing that we've
- 27:47brought in just in the last two years, thousands of permanent jobs once more
- 27:52and more and more comings, you know. And again I think one of
- 27:56the one of the keys to that is, and if you need an indicator
- 27:59of that, is the number of people that are running on the Republican side
- 28:03for all of these positions. You know, I mean, for for governor,
- 28:06we've got what three running for Secretary of State, We've got three candidates
- 28:11for that, a Republicans running for attorney general, just to name a few
- 28:15other races, let alone local you've got county officials that are switching. And
- 28:18you can get into okay, why are they switching. You know, there's
- 28:22doing it, you know, for for political gain or whatever. But this
- 28:25time twenty years ago, to think, okay, we have this many Republicans
- 28:30running for governor, you know, would have been almost usually one two maybe
- 28:36and that was that. That was the Democrats. And of course you know
- 28:40there's you got a field of five or six and you know, only only
- 28:42one or two probably have got a legitimate shot. But but my point is
- 28:47is that that would have been unheard of years ago to have that many Republicans,
- 28:52and it just it just goes to show that I think that the you
- 28:56know, and I had the debate between Mike Pushkin and Tony Hodge a couple
- 28:59of days ago on the show. I thought it actually went pretty well,
- 29:02but the Democratic message, and Mike even admitted I'm not trying to put organism.
- 29:07I even admitted that, you know that maybe the Republicans have done a
- 29:10little bit better job with messaging and tying as you just did as tying the
- 29:15Democrats to the National Democratic Party. So it's kind of where we are.
- 29:19You and the others in the House are up for re election next year.
- 29:23I've heard were heard rumors that there could be others that will be seeking your
- 29:27office on the Republican side, which goes kind of what I was just talking
- 29:30about it. I know you and your attitude just bring it on. But
- 29:34thoughts on the future for Kathy has Crist What are you going? What are
- 29:37you doing? What are you doing? I am running again. I have
- 29:40a campaign kickoff scheduled for next month. I'm staying in my seat I'm not
- 29:45moving up. I'm not trying for another office. I love representing Putnam County.
- 29:51I love the people there, and I'm going to continue to stay there.
- 29:53And if anybody thinks they can outwork me, they have another thing coming.
- 30:00I will say this, Not everybody will agree with you, but I
- 30:03don't think anybody would ever ever accuse you of not working for the people.
- 30:07I will say that regardless of your political ideology. Texas Dave A delicate.

- 34:45on Spring in the Superintendent of Kannon County Schools Doctor Tom Williams. Doctor Williams,
- 34:47good morning, how are you. I'm fine. Thanks, thanks for
- 34:51having me, Thank you for being here. It's the most wonderful time of
- 34:52the year. It's talking about back to school time. I know you're looking
- 34:55forward to it. Absolutely. How could you not be excited about the first
- 35:00stay of school. I think this is my fifty eighth first day of us.
- 35:05It's an exciting time, indeed, it is. Do you still get
- 35:08butterflies on opening day? Doctor Williams? Absolutely? I mean the kids coming
- 35:14to school, the kids coming back to us. It's just an exciting time.
- 35:17And to see the smiles on their faces and know that they're going to
- 35:22get a good education and be productive citizens. It's just it's a good feeling.
- 35:27Nothing's better than working with kids, doctor Williams. We've all heard about
- 35:30the difficulty in finding bodies to fill the various positions in the school system,
- 35:34not only here, but literally across the country. How are we looking in
- 35:37Kanaw County Sir, all of our all of our classrooms are staffed. We
- 35:43some of them have long term subs in there. We are short a few
- 35:45bus drivers and a couple aids, and some cooks and custodians. But you
- 35:51know, anyone wants a job in Kanall County. And I'll have to disagree
- 35:54with the lady who spoke earlier. I think Kanall County is the greatest place
- 35:59to live. I was born and raised here and still am here. But
- 36:01anyway, we have jobs available. If you're interested, you need to contact
- 36:07our Human resource office and we'll be happy to take your application and see if
- 36:12we can place you somewhere. Of course, a lot of buzz superintended this
- 36:15school year in Kanaw County has to do with the opening of the all new
- 36:19Herbert Hoover High School following the devastationary of the floods of twenty sixteen. Brand
- 36:22new school, Sir, state of the art facility and a guy named Brad
- 36:25Paisley coming to town to this Saturday night are pretty exciting times, Aaron elk
- 36:30River, Yes, it really is. And you know, the folks up
- 36:32there have been so patient and so kind, and we've been working with FEMA
- 36:37for the last seven years. And I have to thank our local politicians,
- 36:43the governor's office as well as our senators and the County Commission that have helped
- 36:47us through the way. But it's opening Saturday. It's one hundred and eighty
- 36:52five thousand square feet with another twenty thousand square feet of athletic facilities, and
- 36:59the kids up there absolutely deserve this. It looks it reminds me of like
- 37:02a college campus. Everything is right there, uh ninety acres of education going
- 37:09on. It's just incredible to see. And when I had earlier in the
- 37:15week Superintendent on Monday, I had the football coach of the Huskies, U
- 37:19Joey Fields, and also had their principal, Mike Kelly, on the show.
- 37:22And the principal, Kelly, if I heard him, correctly, said
- 37:23that despite all that those students had to go through, those high school students
- 37:28are at Herbert Hoover High School. They were in in the in the modular
- 37:31type buildings, and you know, and and the sports you know, were
- 37:35a mess as far as you know, trying to find practice facilities things of
- 37:37that nature. And the kids in the classrooms as well, their their academic
- 37:42scores actually went up they did, and Herbert Hoover is twelfth in the state
- 37:46among high schools as far as their academics, you know, they're standardized SAT
- 37:52tests, so we're very proud of them. And uh, mister Kelly does
- 37:57a wonderful job. His first focus is all has always been students first.
- 38:02Education first, So we've got to educate the kids. And they've got several
- 38:07wonderful programs up there that do that. Anything from academics to help you on
- 38:13in college to career technical skills, they've got it at Herbert Hoover. Doctor
- 38:19Williams, I know you're really busy, so we'll have kind of cut this
- 38:21short, but I didn't want to get this in there. As we begin
- 38:23the new school year here in Kana County tomorrow. I know that I saw
- 38:28a little press coverage of you and Sheriff Rutherford and others talking about slowing down
- 38:31in the school zones and things of that nature. Is there anything else that
- 38:36parents or grandparents should be doing there with the youngsters are getting ready for school,
- 38:42anything they should be able to lookout for this year? What do you
- 38:44see any advice? I guess is what I'm looking for for parents or grandparents.
- 38:47I think that they need to make sure their kids get a good night's
- 38:51sleep every night. They need to make sure that their children are well fed.
- 38:54Are we will be feeding three again, all of our students in Kina
- 38:59County for breakfast lunch. But I think just keep up with their school work
- 39:02and make sure they get to school every day. You know, a child
- 39:07wakes up sometimes and they've got a stomach ache or whatever. But the rule
- 39:09in my house was if you don't have a fever, you're going to school.
- 39:13Yeah, that's the way it was in my house too. This headache
- 39:15stuff doesn't cover it, absolutely not. We can't educate them if they're not
- 39:19there well. And what it does, sir is, and this is a
- 39:21show for probably another time, is it sets them up for when they enter
- 39:23the workforce later on. And you you know, you can't call in sick
- 39:29because you have a headache or because you have a stomach ache. And that's
- 39:31I think the earlier you teach kids at the better. Would you agree,
- 39:35Absolutely, would agree. And that's what we call sauce skills. And those
- 39:38are some of the things that are really important. You've got to be in
- 39:40school on time and be ready to work because that's a job skill. Be
- 39:46at your job one time and ready to work well. Superintendent Doctor Tom Williams.
- 39:50I appreciate you and your staff are making you available to us this morning
- 39:54again the day before. You get a lot going on. Best of luck.
- 39:58We hope you and your team and the person I knowed all the schools

- 40:02a great school year and we will talk soon. Thanks a lot, sir,

- 46:46high school football in West Virginia starts a couple of games on Thursday nights.
- 46:51Of course they all start the following day on Friday. But Hurricane and
- 46:54Winfield next Thursday night, and No GW is playing Cable Midland. So those
- 47:00are some big games. Kick us off. And of course the NFL preseason
- 47:06is going on now on what will be write it down? I said it
- 47:08a Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl season. Wow, I've said it every year since
- 47:15nineteen ninety five. But okay, will will they play the Cleveland Browns in
- 47:20that Super Bowl? No? Okay, you know everybody's sexy pick for the
- 47:25NFL season or the Jets and Detroit. I don't know if I'm willing to
- 47:30go that far. I'm a big Dan Campbell fan. He was former Cowboy
- 47:32you know that play that's the coach of Detroit and uh and Mike Pushkin,
- 47:38you know, is a big Jets fan. He and two other people and
- 47:43so so he's all about the Jets. I'm watching Hard Knocks because I love
- 47:45Hard Knocks. I've watched episode two yet, I've just watched episode one.
- 47:49I'm gonna catch up on episode two. Probably at some point over the weekend.
- 47:52You are getting together with a couple of hundred of your closest friends tonight
- 47:55at Buffalo Wild Wings Across Lanes. Talk about it, man, It's gonna
- 47:59be a great time tonight between six pm and seven thirty pm. It's while
- 48:04he's in Wimpy's Night at Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lanes. And I'm gonna
- 48:07be giving away a pair of tickets to the West Virginia University home opener against
- 48:14Duquane and also a pair of tickets to Marshall's home opener when they play Albany.
- 48:21So that's on the September two. WVU starts on the road, they
- 48:25come back to the ninth, so home openers for both Marshall on w you
- 48:30can win some tickets tonight about the Mountaineers and Penn State. That's a renewal
- 48:34of an old rivalry playing up in Happy Valley. What do you think about
- 48:36that? Well, you know, the line is going to be double digits
- 48:39in not in West Virginia's favor, but here in the last couple of weeks
- 48:44there's been people talking about WVU Maven pull the upset, So it's gonna be
- 48:50interesting. You never know, I mean the first game of the season,
- 48:53but I do know that's a really tough environment to walk into State. It's
- 48:59not happy, It's it's not appropriately named Happy Valley. It's not for the
- 49:02opponents. When you think about the quarterback situation WV. You know, I've
- 49:07heard some good things about Garrett Greene. I think he probably has improved.
- 49:12He showed some signs, some glimpses in the time that he's been on field,
- 49:16and you know, I think primarily he's been known as a runner or
- 49:20a kind of an option guy or maybe a versatile athlete kind of guy.
- 49:23But I'm getting reports that his arm has improved. So and they really like
- 49:29their new receiver corps, so you never know, and they already have a
- 49:32pretty good Running Game and C. J. Donaldson. So if they get
- 49:37the defense shored up in Morgantown, they may not be as bad as people
- 49:40predict them, at least not last in the Big twelve. Will it be
- 49:44enough to save Neil Brown's job? Oh, that's the tough question. If
- 49:46it was not year six, it would be a little easier to say,
- 49:52yes, he'll probably stick around. But the fact that you know he's that
- 49:57deep into it that people who have been trusting the time for so long,
- 50:00I don't know that you know his favors are running out. I believe five

- 50:22trying to I'm trying to become a multi media star. What's up with that?
- 50:24I don't know about star, but you know I've I'm just overwhelmed with
- 50:29ideas of things that I should do. It could do when you grow up,
- 50:31when I grow up exactly. I don't know that that's ever gonna happen,
- 50:36but you know, I've I've had a lot of interest outside of sports.
- 50:39It will have some sports, but it's gonna be like a podcast or
- 50:43something. You're knowing. I don't use that word, but it's gonna be
- 50:45an online show show. You'll be able to listen to it at your leisure.
