Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: New Zealand first making a play for the West Coast.
- 0:01Speaker 1: Over the weekend, Winston Peters in Graymouth campaign policy announced
- 0:05Speaker 1: return fifty percent of mining royalties to the region that
- 0:09Speaker 1: they actually came from. On top of that, former Buller
- 0:12Speaker 1: District may Jamie Klein will be the party's candidate for
- 0:15Speaker 1: West Coast Tessmen. He's with me this morning, Jamie.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Morning, Ryan.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Didn't you just get the boot from voters in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: mineral race.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Absolutely, very close democratic decision by the electorate here in Buller.
- 0:30Speaker 2: But yeah, certainly a lot of good work to be
- 0:32Speaker 2: has been done over the past six years in New Zealand. First,
- 0:36Speaker 2: we're front and center throughout most of that.
- 0:39Speaker 1: What's your play with the mining policy is it? Do
- 0:42Speaker 1: you think that's going to be a vote winner there
- 0:44Speaker 1: for the party vote? Oh?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Absolutely. You know, one of the issues the West Coast
- 0:49Speaker 2: has small population based, huge geographic area and like most
- 0:53Speaker 2: of New Zealand's massive infrastructure needs and ability to pay affordability,
- 0:58Speaker 2: all of those things are affecting our region. So it's
- 1:02Speaker 2: long high time that the minerals royalties scheme gets a
- 1:05Speaker 2: bit of a shakeup. And to hear that there's an
- 1:08Speaker 2: appetite in MW. Zealand First is certainly campaigning on fifty
- 1:11Speaker 2: percent of those royalties coming back to the regions where
- 1:14Speaker 2: the minerals are coming from. As music to my ears.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Alongside that, of course, is you know, we've got an
- 1:19Speaker 2: industry that wants to ramp up and a lot of
- 1:21Speaker 2: that requires several infrastructure to be to be put in
- 1:24Speaker 2: ahead of time to facilitate building and accommodating all the
- 1:29Speaker 2: wave of workforce that are coming, and so an ability
- 1:33Speaker 2: to do that and makes sense to focus that on
- 1:35Speaker 2: the areas where the growth is going to occur in
- 1:37Speaker 2: the mineral sector.
- 1:38Speaker 1: New Zealand. Fir's got fewer votes in the Greens in
- 1:40Speaker 1: the seat in twenty twenty three. Who are you hoping
- 1:42Speaker 1: that policies like this will take votes from? Is it Labor?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Because Net's got about fourteen thousand, Labour got about ten thousand.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You know, who are you going after? Whose vote are
- 1:52Speaker 1: you trying to get?
- 1:55Speaker 2: I mean, clearly Labor Party voters are going to be
- 2:00Speaker 2: more well served under a New Zealand First representation in
- 2:04Speaker 2: this region. Labor have been missing an action in terms
- 2:07Speaker 2: of its support for the workers and genuine support for
- 2:10Speaker 2: what was its traditional heart, which was the mining sector.
- 2:14Speaker 2: New Zealand First are looking to turn that around, and
- 2:17Speaker 2: we've been on the ground this weekend meeting with hundreds
- 2:20Speaker 2: of our community with rousing support for this policy.
- 2:24Speaker 1: All right, appreciate your time, Jamie. Best of luck, Jamie
- 2:26Speaker 1: Klein with US New Zealand First candidate for West Coast Tasman.
